Abstract
Polystyrene nanoplastics (PS NPs) and dibutyl phthalate (DBP) pollution pose significant risks to ecosystems and contribute to bioaccumulation in plants, yet uptake mechanisms and combined toxicity are poorly understood. We used fluorescent labeling and europium-doped PS NPs to reveal the absorption and translocation of NPs by dandelions and conducted a transcriptomic analysis under PS NPs and DBP exposure. The results indicated that NPs are transported horizontally through the intercellular gaps at the root tips and primary root-lateral root junctions via the apoplastic pathway, followed by longitudinal transport through the xylem vessels under the transpiration stream. Co-exposure significantly reduced the bioconcentration factors of dandelion seedlings by 113 % but increased the NP transfer factors by 33.8 %. Transcriptomic analysis confirmed that exposure to PS NPs and DBP activated gene expression in dandelion shoots and roots. The differentially expressed genes were primarily involved in the photosynthesis, plant hormone signal transduction, and phenylpropanoid biosynthesis pathways. Weighted gene co-expression network analysis identified key genes and hub transcription factors playing crucial roles in regulating dandelion's response to combined stress. Our study provides new insights into the plant toxicity mechanism underlying the interaction between PS NPs and DBP, highlighting the adverse effects of the combined pollution on plant health.

Abstract
There are great concerns for the accumulation in the environment of small dimension plastics, such as micro- and nanoplastics. Due to their small size, which facilitates their uptake by organisms, nanoplastics are of particular concern. The toxic effects of nanoplastics on plants are already reported in the literature, however nothing is known, to date, about the possible effects of climate change, in particular of increasing temperatures, on their toxicity for plants. To address this issue, plants of the water fern Azolla filiculoides were grown at optimal (25 °C) or high (35 °C) temperature, with or without polystyrene nanoplastics, and the effects of these stressors were assessed using a multidisciplinary approach. Green fluorescent polystyrene nanoplastics were used to track their possible uptake by A. filiculoides. The development and physiology of our model plant was adversely affected by both nanoplastics and high temperatures. Overall, histological, morphological, and photosynthetic parameters worsened under co-treatment, in accordance with the increased uptake of nanoplastics under higher temperature, as observed by fluorescence images. Based on our findings, the concern regarding the potential for increased toxicity of pollutants, specifically nanoplastics, at high temperatures is well-founded and warrants attention as a potential negative consequence of climate change. Additionally, there is cause for concern regarding the increase in nanoplastic uptake at high temperatures, particularly if this phenomenon extends to food and feed crops, which could lead to greater entry into the food chain.

Abstract
Polymers are the main building blocks of plastic, with the annual global production volume of fossil carbon-based polymers reaching over 457 million metric tons in 2019 and this figure is anticipated to triple by 2060. There is potential for environmental harm and adverse human health impacts associated with plastic, its constituent polymers and the chemicals therein, at all stages of the plastic life cycle, from extraction of raw materials, production and manufacturing, consumption, through to ultimate disposal and waste management. While there have been considerable research and policy efforts in identifying and mitigating the impacts associated with problematic plastic products such as single-use plastics and hazardous chemicals in plastics, with national and/or international regulations to phase out their use, plastic polymers are often overlooked. In this review, the polymer dimension of the current knowledge on environmental release, human exposure and health impacts of plastic is discussed across the plastic life cycle, including chemicals used in production and additives commonly used to achieve the properties needed for applications for which the polymers are generally used. This review focuses on polycarbonate, polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride, and polybutadiene, four common plastic polymers made from the hazardous monomers, bisphenol, styrene, vinyl chloride and 1,3-butadiene, respectively. Potential alternative polymers, chemicals, and products are considered. Our findings emphasise the need for a whole system approach to be undertaken for effective regulation of plastics whereby the impacts of plastics are assessed with respect to their constituent polymers, chemicals, and applications and across their entire life cycle.

Abstract
This study aimed was to covalently immobilize β-galactosidase from Aspergillus oryzae and protease from Bacillus licheniformis on amino-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes. In this study, a two-level factorial design was employed to investigate the impact of seven continuous variables (activation pH, glutaraldehyde molarity, activation time (0-8 h), buffer solution pH (8-0), buffer solution molarity, MWCNT-NH 2 -glutaraldehyde quantity, and stabilization time (0-180 h)) on the immobilization efficiency and enzymatic activity of protease and β-galactosidase. Furthermore, the effect of time on the percentage of enzymatic activity was examined during specific intervals (24, 48, 72, 96, and 120 h) of the immobilization process. The analysis of variance results for protease enzymatic activity revealed a notable influence of the seven variables on immobilization efficiency and enzymatic activity. Additionally, the findings indicate that activation time, buffer pH, MWCNT-NH 2 -glutaraldehyde quantity, and stabilization time significantly affect the activity of the protease enzyme. The interplay between buffer pH and stabilization time is also significant. Indeed, both activation time and the quantity of MWCNT-NH 2 -glutaraldehyde exert a reducing effect on enzyme activity. Notably, the influence of MWCNT-NH 2 -glutaraldehyde quantity is more significant (p < 0.05). In terms of beta-galactosidase enzymatic activity, the study results highlight that among the seven variables considered, only the glutaraldehyde molarity, activation time, and the interplay of activation time and the quantity of MWCNT-NH 2 -glutaraldehyde can exert a statistically significant positive impact on the enzyme's activity (p < 0.05). The combination of activation time and buffer solution molarity, as well as the interactive effect of buffer pH and MWCNT-NH2-glutaraldehyde, can lead to a significant improvement in the stabilization efficiency of the protease of carbon nanotubes. The analysis of variance results demonstrated that the efficiency of covalently immobilizing β-galactosidase from Aspergillus oryzae on amino-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes is influenced by the molarity of glutaraldehyde, buffer pH, stabilization time, and the interplay of activation time + buffer pH, buffer pH + activation time, activation time + buffer molarity, and glutaraldehyde molarity + MWCNT-NH 2 -glutaraldehyde (p < 0.05). Through the optimization and selection of optimal formulations, the obtained results indicate enzyme activities and stabilization efficiencies of 64.09 % ± 72.63 % and 65.96 % ± 71.77 % for protease and beta-galactosidase, respectively. Moreover, increasing the enzyme stabilization time resulted in a reduction of enzyme activity. Furthermore, an increase in pH, temperature, and the duration of milk storage passing through the enzyme-immobilized carbon nanotubes led to a decrease in enzyme stabilization efficiency, and lactose hydrolysis declined progressively over 8-h. Hence, the covalent immobilization of β-galactosidase from Aspergillus oryzae and protease from Bacillus licheniformis onto amino-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes is anticipated to be achievable for milk applications.

Abstract
Polystyrene nanoplastics and titanium dioxide nanoparticles are widely spread in all environments, often coexisting within identical frameworks. Both these contaminants can induce negative effects on cell and plant physiology, giving concerns on their possible interaction which could increase each other's harmful effects on plants. Despite the urgency of this issue, there is very little literature addressing it. To evaluate the potential risk of this co-contamination, lentil seeds were treated for five days with polystyrene nanoplastics and titanium dioxide nanoparticles (anatase crystalline form), alone and in co-presence. Cytological analyses, and histochemical and biochemical evaluation of oxidative stress were carried out on isolated shoots and roots. TEM analysis seemed to indicate the absence of physical/chemical interactions between the two nanomaterials. Seedlings under cotreatment showed the greatest cytotoxic and genotoxic effects and high levels of oxidative stress markers associated with growth inhibition. Even if biochemical data did not evidence significant differences between materials treated with polystyrene nanoplastics alone or in co-presence with titanium dioxide nanoparticles, histochemical analysis highlighted a different pattern of oxidative markers, suggesting a synergistic effect by the two nanomaterials. In accordance, the fluorescence signal linked to nanoplastics in root and shoot was higher under cotreatment, perhaps due to the well-known ability of titanium dioxide nanoparticles to induce root tissue damage, in this way facilitating the uptake and translocation of polystyrene nanoplastics into the plant body. In the antioxidant machinery, peroxidase activity showed a significant increase in treated roots, in particular under cotreatment, probably more associated with stress-induced lignin synthesis than with hydrogen peroxide detoxification. Present results clearly indicate the worsening by metal nanoparticles of the negative effects of nanoplastics on plants, underlining the importance of research considering the impact of cotreatments with different nanomaterials, which may better reflect the complex environmental conditions.

Abstract
The food and beverage packaging industry has experienced remarkable growth in recent years. Particularly the requirement for appropriate packaging materials used for the sale of fermented products is boosted due to the rising acceptance of economical functional foods available to consumers on the shelves of their local supermarkets. The most popular nutraceutical foods with increased sales include natural yogurts, probiotic-rich milk, kefir, and other fermented food and beverage products. These items have mainly been produced from dairy-based or non-dairy raw materials to provide several product options for most consumers, including vegan and lactose-intolerant populations. Therefore, there is a need for an evaluation of the potential developments and prospects that characterize the growth of the food packaging industry in the global market. The article is based on a review of information from published research, encompassing current trends, emerging technologies, challenges, innovations, and sustainability initiatives for food industry packaging.

Abstract
Conventional food preservation methods such as heat treatment, irradiation, chemical treatment, refrigeration, and coating have various disadvantages, like loss of food quality, nutrition, and cost-effectiveness. Accordingly, cold plasma is one of the new technologies for food processing and has played an important role in preventing food spoilage. Specifically, in-package cold plasma has become a modern trend to decontaminate, process, and package food simultaneously. This strategy has proven successful in processing various fresh food ingredients, including spinach, fruits, vegetables, and meat. In particular, cold plasma treatment within the package reduces the risk of post-processing contamination. Cryoplasm decontamination within packaging has been reported to reduce significantly the microbial load of many foods' spoilage-causing pathogens. However, studies are needed to focus more on the effects of in-package treatments on endogenous enzyme activity, pest control, and removal of toxic pesticide residues. In this review, we comprehensively evaluated the efficacy of in-package low-temperature plasma treatment to extend the shelf life of various foods. The mechanisms by which cold plasma interacts with food were investigated, emphasizing its effects on pathogen reduction, spoilage mitigation, and surface modification. The review also critically assessed the effects of the treatments on food quality, regulatory considerations, and their potential as viable technologies to improve food safety and packaging life. In-package cold plasma treatment could revolutionize food storage when combined with other sophisticated technologies such as nanotechnology.

Abstract
Antioxidant and antimicrobial agarose coatings were developed by grafting gallic acid through the carbodiimide coupling method. Structural characterization revealed that the carboxyl group of gallic acid was successfully grafted onto the C6-OH of D-galactose in agarose, with the highest observed grafting ratio being 13.73 %. The grafting of gallic acid significantly increased the antioxidant and bacteriostatic activities of the agarose. As the grafting ratio of gallic acid-modified agarose (GaAg) increased from 0 to 13.73 %, the scavenging ratio of DPPH and the inhibition ratio of β-carotene bleaching were observed to increase from 0 % to 65.92 % and 6.89 % to 73.46 %, respectively. GaAg exhibited up to 100 % inhibition of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The physicochemical properties of gel strength, viscosity, gelling temperature and melting temperature decreased to 971.3 g/cm2, 17.9 mPa·s, 31.7 °C and 84.1 °C, respectively. The gel contact angle was increased from 22.1° to 73.6°. Fish preservation tests have demonstrated that it effectively inhibited bacterial growth, prevented fat oxidation, blocked light, reduced moisture loss, and enhanced the overall quality of grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idellus) fillets during refrigeration, which was more effective than native agarose in extending the shelf life of fish. Therefore, GaAg holds promise as an aquatic product preservative.

Abstract
The COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) pandemic's steady condition coupled with predominance of emerging contaminants in the environment and its synergistic implications in recent times has stoked interest in combating medical emergencies in this dynamic environment. In this context, high concentrations of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs), microplastics (MPs), antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and soaring coinfecting microbes, tied with potential endocrine disruptive (ED) are critical environmental concerns that requires a detailed documentation and analysis. During the pandemic, the identification, enumeration, and assessment of potential hazards of PPCPs and MPs and (used as anti-COVID-19 agents/applications) in aquatic habitats have been attempted globally. Albeit receding threats in the magnitude of COVID-19 infections, both these pollutants have still posed serious consequences to aquatic ecosystems and the very health and hygiene of the population in the vicinity. The surge in the contaminants post-COVID also renders them to be potent vectors to harbor and amplify AMR. Pertinently, the present work attempts to critically review such instances to understand the underlying mechanism, interactions swaying the current health of our environment during this post-COVID-19 era. During this juncture, although prevention of diseases, patient care, and self-hygiene have taken precedence, nevertheless antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) efforts have been overlooked. Unnecessary usage of PPCPs and plastics during the pandemic has resulted in increased emerging contaminants (i.e., active pharmaceutical ingredients and MPs) in various environmental matrices. It was also noticed that among COVID-19 patients, while the bacterial co-infection prevalence was 0.2-51%, the fungi, viral, protozoan and helminth were 0.3-49, 1-22, 2-15, 0.4-15% respectively, rendering them resistant to residual PPCPs. There are inevitable chances of ED effects from PPCPs and MPs applied previously, that could pose far-reaching health concerns. Furthermore, clinical and other experimental evidence for many newer compounds is very scarce and demands further research. Pro-active measures targeting effective waste management, evolved environmental policies aiding strict regulatory measures, and scientific research would be crucial in minimizing the impact and creating better preparedness towards such events among the masses fostering sustainability.

Abstract
Solvent-based and mechanical recycling technology approaches were compared with respect to each process's decontamination efficiency. Herein, post-consumer polystyrene (PS) feedstock was recycled by both technologies, yielding recycled PS resins (rPS). The process feedstock was subjected to four recycling cycles in succession to assess the technology perennity. The physico-chemical and mechanical properties of the rPS were then evaluated to discern the advantages and drawbacks of each recycling approach. The molecular weight of the mechanically recycled resin was found to decrease by 30% over the reprocessing cycles. In contrast, the solvent-base recycling technology yielded a similar molecular weight regarding the feedstock. This consistency in the rPS product is critical for consumer applications. Further qualitative and quantitative analyses on residual organic compounds and inorganic and particulate contaminants were investigated. It was found that the solvent-based technology is very efficient for purifying deeply contaminated feedstock in comparison to mechanical recycling, which is limited to well-cleaned and niche feedstocks.

Abstract
This review aims to facilitate future research on microplastics (MPs) in the environment using systematic and analytical protocols, ultimately contributing to assessment of the risk to human health due to continuous daily exposure to MPs. Despite extensive studies on MP abundance in environment, identification, and treatment, their negative effects on human health remain unknown due to the lack of proof from clinical studies and limited technology on the MP identification. To assess the risk of MPs to human health, the first step is to estimate MP intake via ingestion, inhalation, and dermal contact under standardized exposure conditions in daily life. Furthermore, rather than focusing on the sole MPs, migrating chemicals from plastic products should be quantified and their health risk be assessed concurrently with MP release. The critical factors influencing MP release and simultaneously exposed chemicals (SECs) must be investigated using a standardized identification method. This review summarises release sources, factors, and possible routes of MPs from the environment to the human body, and the quantification methods used in risk assessment. We also discussed the issues encountered in MP release and SEC migration. Consequently, this review provides directions for future MP studies that can answer questions about MP toxicity to human health.

Abstract
The development of packaging technology has become a crucial part of the food industry in today's modern societies, which are characterized by technological advancements, industrialization, densely populated cities, and scientific advancements that have increased food production over the past 50 years despite the lack of agricultural land. Various types of food-packaging materials are utilized, with plastic being the most versatile. However, there are certain concerns with regards to the usage of plastic packaging because of unreacted monomers' potential migration from the polymer packaging to the food. The magnitude of monomer migration depends on numerous aspects, including the monomer chemistry, type of plastic packaging, physical-chemical parameters such as the temperature and pH, and food chemistry. The major concern for the presence of packaging monomers in food is that some monomers are endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs) with a capability to interfere with the functioning of vital hormonal systems in the human body. For this reason, different countries have resolved to enforce guidelines and regulations for packaging monomers in food. Additionally, many countries have introduced migration testing procedures and safe limits for packaging monomer migration into food. However, to date, several research studies have reported levels of monomer migration above the set migration limits due to leaching from the food-packaging materials into the food. This raises concerns regarding possible health effects on consumers. This paper provides a critical review on plastic food-contact materials' monomer migration, including that from biodegradable plastic packaging, the monomer migration mechanisms, the monomer migration chemistry, the key factors that affect the migration process, and the associated potential EDC human health risks linked to monomers' presence in food. The aim is to contribute to the existing knowledge and understanding of plastic food-packaging monomer migration.

Abstract
Researching on potential biopolymer sources with the aim of developing edible films with better mechanical and barrier properties has become innovative as it would be a key factor to minimize the use of synthetic polymers in food packaging. Therefore, different biopolymers such as galactomannan have been gaining attention recently. Fenugreek seed gum is a rich source of galactomannan which is minimally researched on its applicability in edible film making. The degree of galactose substitution and polymerization are the main factors that determine the functional properties of galactomannan. A strong and cohesive film matrix cannot be produced from fenugreek seed gum as its molecular interaction is weakened due to the high galactose substitution with a high galactose/mannose ratio, 1:1. Structural modifications of galactomannan in fenugreek seed gum will lead to films with the required mechanical properties. Hence, this review summarizes recent scientific studies on the limitations of fenugreek seed gum as a film forming agent and the specific modification techniques that can be applied in order to increase its film forming capability and performance.

Abstract
AIMS The aim of this study was to determine the biofilm-forming ability of a strain belonging to the Pseudomonas fluorescens group isolated from the dairy environment under food-relevant conditions. Moreover, the effects of commercial sanitizers against preformed biofilms were assessed both in terms of viability and structure. METHODS AND RESULTS The biofilms were formed on polystyrene, stainless steel (SS), and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) in a wide range of temperatures (4-25°C) and were subjected to the action of 10 different sanitizers. The strain under study showed to be a strong biofilm-former regardless of temperature, particularly on polystyrene. The biofilms were mostly sensitive to chlorine and peracetic acid-based sanitizers. For some sanitizers (e.g. amphoteric), a relationship was observed between the material and the tolerance, while the temperature was not statistically significant. The formation of long-term biofilms on SS was also structurally affected by the temperature, showing microcolonies more irregular in shape and with lower cellularity at 4°C compared to 15°C, where the biofilm was more compact and with a high presence of EPS. CONCLUSIONS The strain belonging to the P. fluorescens group was shown to quickly adhere and form mature biofilm at temperatures and on materials relevant to the food sector; however, biofilms formed under different conditions were differently tolerant to disinfectants. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY Findings from this study could provide a basis for developing targeted sanitation protocols in food plants.

Abstract
Microplastics (MPs) are now a hot environmental contaminant. However, researchers paid little attention to their effects on immune organs such as the thymus. Here, we exposed chickens to a concentration gradient of polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) and then followed the decrease in the thymus index. HE staining showed cellular infiltration in the thymus. The assay kit corroborated that PS-MPs impelled oxidative stress in the thymus: increased MDA levels, downregulated antioxidants such as SOD, CAT, and GSH, and significantly undermined total antioxidant capacity. Western blotting and qRT-PCR results showed that Nrf2/NF-κB, Bcl-2/Bax, and AKT signaling pathways were activated in the thymus after exposure to PS-MPs. It stimulated the increased expression of downstream such as IL-1β, caspase-3, and Beclin1, triggering thymus inflammation, apoptosis, and autophagy. This study provides new insights into the field of microplastic immunotoxicity and highlights potential environmental hazards in poultry farming.

Abstract
Styrene is a nonpolar organic compound used in very high volume for the industrial scale production of commercially important polymers such as polystyrene resins as well as copolymers like acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, latex, and rubber. These resins are widely used in the manufacturing of various products including single-use plastics such as disposable cups and containers, protective packaging, heat insulation, and so forth. The large-scale utilization leads to the over-accumulation of styrene waste in the environment causing deleterious health risks including cancer, neurological impairment, dysbiosis of central nervous system, and respiratory problems. To eliminate the accumulating waste. Microbial enzyme-based system represents the most environmental friendly and sustainable approach for elimination of styrene waste. However, comprehensive understanding of the enzyme-substrate interaction and associated pathways would be crucial for developing large-scale disposal systems. This study aims to understand the molecular interaction between the protein-ligand complexes of the styrene catabolic reactions by bacterial enzymes of sty operon. Molecular docking analysis for catalytic enzymes namely, styrene monooxygenase (SMO), styrene oxide isomerase (SOI), and phenylacetaldehyde dehydrogenase (PAD) of the bacterial sty operon was carried out with their individual substrates, that is, styrene, styrene oxide, and phenylacetic acid, respectively. The binding energy, amino acids forming binding cavity, and binding interactions between the protein-ligand binding sites were calculated for each case. The obtained binding energies showed a stable association of these complexes indicating the future scope of their utilization for large-scale bioremediation of styrene, and its commercially used polymers and copolymers.

Abstract
Polyesters (PES) and polystyrene (PS) are among the most used plastics in the production of food contact materials (FCM). The existence of compounds that could migrate from these materials into food requires a constant analytical control to ensure the safety of consumers due to consumption. It also implies a significant research challenge for their identification and quantification. One of the most important groups of known FCM migrants are the substances known as oligomers. PES and PS oligomers have long been suspected to possess some toxicological effects. The International Agency for Research on Cancer and the European Food Safety Authority alerted recently to the potential carcinogenicity of styrene, with its oligomers consequently being also in the spotlight. At the same time, PES cyclic oligomers are categorized as having Cramer III toxicity. Many recent works on the occurrence of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT), and PS oligomers in FCM and food have been published. The oligomeric chemical analysis requires the use of demanding analytical strategies to address their different physicochemical characteristics (melting points, octanol/water partition coefficients, and solubility properties). Chromatographic methods are normally preferred due to the intrinsic complexity of the target matrices, but the reduced amount of reliable analytical standards still hinders the widespread screening analysis of oligomers in food. This work presents the most relevant recent studies and analytical methodologies used in the analysis of PET, PBT, and PS oligomers in food and FCM, as well as current and future challenges.

Abstract
Recently, natural as well as synthetic polymers have been receiving significant attention as candidates to replace non-renewable materials. With the exponential developments in the world each day, the collateral damage to the environment is incessant. Increased demands for reducing pollution and energy consumption are the driving force behind the research related to surface-modified natural fibers (NFs), polymers, and various derivatives of them such as natural-fiber-reinforced polymer composites. Natural fibers have received special attention for industrial applications due to their favorable characteristics, such as low cost, abundance, light weight, and biodegradable nature. Even though NFs offer many potential applications, they still face some challenges in terms of durability, strength, and processing. Many of these have been addressed by various surface modification methodologies and compositing with polymers. Among different surface treatment strategies, low-temperature plasma (LTP) surface treatment has recently received special attention for tailoring surface properties of different materials, including NFs and synthetic polymers, without affecting any of the bulk properties of these materials. Hence, it is very important to get an overview of the latest developments in this field. The present article attempts to give an overview of different materials such as NFs, synthetic polymers, and composites. Special attention was placed on the low-temperature plasma-based surface engineering of these materials for diverse applications, which include but are not limited to environmental remediation, packaging, biomedical devices, and sensor development.

Abstract
Polyphenols are secondary metabolites produced by plants, which contribute to the plant's defense against abiotic stress conditions (e.g., UV radiation and precipitation), the aggression of herbivores, and plant pathogens. Epidemiological studies suggest that long-term consumption of plant polyphenols protects against cardiovascular disease, cancer, osteoporosis, diabetes, and neurodegenerative diseases. Their structural diversity has fascinated and confronted analytical chemists on how to carry out unambiguous identification, exhaustive recovery from plants and organic waste, and define their nutritional and biological potential. The food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical industries employ polyphenols from fruits and vegetables to produce additives, additional foods, and supplements. In some cases, nanocarriers have been used to protect polyphenols during food processing, to solve the issues related to low water solubility, to transport them to the site of action, and improve their bioavailability. This review summarizes the structure-bioactivity relationships, processing parameters that impact polyphenol stability and bioavailability, the research progress in nanocarrier delivery, and the most innovative methodologies for the exhaustive recovery of polyphenols from plant and agri-waste materials.

Abstract
The development of compostable packages that maintain fresh meat quality, is an important achievement for the poultry industry. The objective of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of using a starch-based composite foam (SCF) in the packaging of fresh chicken meat during refrigerated storage. SCF was prepared using extrusion process. Nisin (2%) was added as antimicrobial agent (SCFN). Commercial expanded polystyrene (EPS) was used as control. Physical characterization, antimicrobial analysis and storage of fresh chicken meat were carried out. No differences were observed in SEM images between SFC and SCFN samples. Water uptake of SCF were higher than SCFN (p < 0.05). SCFN exhibited higher Young´s modulus and flexural strength (p < 0.05), and antimicrobial effect against foodborne pathogens. During the storage of chicken meat, the starch-based composite foam showed a higher capacity to retain liquid than EPS. The color of chicken meat had slight variations at day 4 compared with the raw meat. Nisin did not retard lipid oxidation of chicken meat, however, the aerobic plate count was lower. Therefore, the starch-based composite foam is suitable for fresh meat storage, being improved with the incorporation of nisin as antimicrobial agent. Abstract
It is considered to be one of the most effective strategies to prepare functionalized polypropylene (PP) materials via the melt grafting of polar monomers onto PP chains. However, the grafting efficiency of functional monomers is generally low. To achieve a high grafting efficiency, we explored the effect of tea polyphenols (C), which are good free radical scavengers, on the melt grafting of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) onto PP chains initiated by dicumyl peroxide (DCP). Specifically, 0.5~3 wt% of tea polyphenols (C) were introduced to the PP/DCP/GMA melt blending system. The morphology, melt flow rate (MFR), thermal and mechanical properties of tea polyphenols (C) incorporated PP/DCP/GMA blends were investigated systematically. The results showed that the proper amount of tea polyphenols (C) (0.5~2 wt%) promoted the grafting of GMA. Unexpectedly, the PP backbone suffered from more severe degradation with the addition of tea polyphenols (C). The phenomena were ascribed to the reaction between phenolic hydroxyl groups of tea polyphenols (C) and epoxy groups of grafted GMA, which was revealed by the FTIR results. In addition, according to DSC and the tensile test, the co-grafting of GMA and tea polyphenols (C) improved the crystallization ability, yield strength and Young's modulus of the PP matrix.

Abstract
The development of polymeric membranes from polymers such as polystyrene (PS), polyvinylchloride (PVC), and their associated family has brought great momentum to the environmental remediation universe, mainly due to their surprisingly diverse and multi-purpose nature. Their usage has surged 20 times in the last half-century and is likely to double again in the coming 20 years. As a result, the polymeric materials economy and commercialization of research become increasingly important as a possible option for a country to boost prosperity while decreasing its reliance on limited raw resources and mitigating negative externalities. This transformation demands a systematic strategy, which involves progress beyond improving the existing models and building new avenues for collaboration. In this work, a sophisticated system, i.e., product space model (PSM), has been presented, explicitly appraising the opportunity space for United Kingdom, Italy, Poland, India, Canada, Indonesia, Brazil, Saudi Arabia, Russia and Colombia for their potential future industrialization and commercialization of polymeric membranes for environmental remediation. The results revealed that UK, Italy, Poland and India are at advantageous positions owing to their close proximity of (distance<2) and their placement in Parsimonious policy, which is the most desired quadrant of Policy Map of PSM, Canada and Indonesia have medium level opportunities, while Russia and Saudi Arabia have opportunities with more challenges to fully exploit the unexploited polymers products in terms of membranes for environmental remediation and prove favorable for export diversification, sustainable economic growth, and commercialization.

Abstract
Simple Summary Nowadays, micro- and nanoplastic particles can be found almost everywhere, being especially harmful for humans. Their absorption, primarily via inhalation and digestive routes, might lead to a particularly dangerous accumulation of those substances within the human body. Due to the alarming increase in contamination worldwide and excessive production of plastics and synthetic materials, there is an urgent need to investigate the effects of those substances on human health. So far, it has been observed that nano- and microplastics might be extremely harmful, leading to serious health conditions, such as cancers of various human body systems. Abstract Micro- and nanoplatics have been already reported to be potential carcinogenic/mutagenic substances that might cause DNA damage, leading to carcinogenesis. Thus, the effects of micro- and nanoplastics exposure on human health are currently being investigated extensively to establish clear relationships between those substances and health consequences. So far, it has been observed that there exists a definite correlation between exposure to micro- and nanoplastic particles and the onset of several cancers. Therefore, we have conducted research using PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus databases, searching for all the research papers devoted to cancers that could be potentially related to the subject of exposure to nano- and microplastics. Ultimately, in this paper, we have discussed several cancers, including hepatocellular carcinoma, pancreatic cancer, pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma, biliary tract cancer, and some endocrine-related cancers.

Abstract
Human gastrointestinal cells can be exposed to different xenobiotics present in food or drinking water. In this work, we assessed the cytotoxicity of polystyrene nanoparticles (PS-NPs) and how it is impacted by fluoride (F-) presence. We decided to examine PS-NPs and F- which can be easily found in drinking water and food. Commercially available amine-modified 100 nm PS-NPs were used in the study. Scanning Electron Microscopy with Electron Dispersive Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) and Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) were used to characterize PS-NPs. The colon cell lines (HT-29, Caco-2, CCD 841 CoN) were used. Cytotoxicity of PS-NPs and F- alone or in co-exposition were assessed with MTT assay in a time- and concentration-dependent manner. Flow cytometry was used to measure reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, cell cycle distribution, and apoptosis analysis. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was used to determine whether PS-NPs and/or F- can cause ultrastructure changes in the cells. We have shown that PS-NPs are cytotoxic to human colon cells in a time- and concentration-dependent manner. PS-NPs did not impact neither intracellular ROS production nor the cells cell cycle distribution. However, if HT-29 cells were co-exposed to PS-NPs and F-, an increased number of cells in G0/G1 phase and decreased number of cells in G2/M were observed. PS-NPs can cause apoptosis in HT-29 cells, this effect was enhanced if cells were co-exposed to PS-NP and F-. PS-NPs were internalised by the cells and caused ultrastructure changes. Fluoride itself (1 mM) was not cytotoxic to the cells and did not cause any changes in the ultrastructure of the cells. We have proven that polystyrene nanoparticles can be cytotoxic to human gastrointestinal cells and this effect is enhanced by fluoride.

Abstract
Yogurt is a diverse dairy product category. It is available in different packaging designs made of different materials. To identify potential for improvement for these packagings, a better understanding about used materials and packaging efficiencies is necessary. For this study, 150 dairy products and some yogurt relevant desserts were bought from various supermarkets, street markets and discounters in the Munich region (Germany) in spring 2022. Commercial types of packaging are cups, buckets, pouches, bottles, glass packagings and bricks. The filling ratio of most packagings is above 70%, the rest of the volume is headspace. Poly(1-methylethylene) (PP) and poly(1-phenylethene) (PS) dominate as main materials for the different types of packaging. For bottle packagings, poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and polyethene high-density (PE-HD) are used. Interestingly, poly(lactic acid) (PLA) is not found. Closures (caps) are responsible for 5 to 30% of the total packaging weight. Typical filling efficiencies are 20 to 40 g food product packaged in one gram of packaging material. For glass packagings, the values are 1.5 to 2 g food product packaged in one gram of packaging material. Therefore, plastic packaging results in an at least ten-times lower packaging use per unit of food, at single use packagings. With increasing product weights, we observe a tendency towards higher packaging efficiencies. By using paper/carton wrapping at cups, plastic use is reduced for the whole packaging.

Abstract
In order to solve the increasingly serious environmental problems caused by plastic-based packaging, carrageenan-based films are drawing much attentions in food packaging applications, due to low cost, biodegradability, compatibility, and film-forming property. The purpose of this article is to present a comprehensive review of recent developments in carrageenan-based films, including fabrication strategies, physical and chemical properties and novel food packaging applications. Carrageenan can be extracted from red algae mainly by hydrolysis, ultrasonic-assisted and microwave-assisted extraction, and the combination of multiple extraction methods will be future trends in carrageenan extraction methods. Carrageenan can form homogeneous film-forming solutions and fabricate films mainly by direct coating, solvent casting and electrospinning, and mechanism of film formation was discussed in detail. Due to the inherent limitations of the pure carrageenan film, physical and chemical properties of carrageenan films were enhanced by incorporation with other compounds. Therefore, carrageenan-based films can be widely used for extending the shelf life of food and monitoring the food freshness by inhibiting microbial growth, reducing moisture loss and the respiration, etc. This article will provide useful guidelines for further research on carrageenan-based films.

Abstract
In aquatic ecosystems, filter feeders like mussels are particularly vulnerable to microplastics (MP). However, little is known about how the polymer type and the associated properties (like additives or remaining monomers) of MP impact organisms, as the predominant type of MP used for effect studies on the organismic level are micron grade polystyrene spheres, without considering their chemical composition. Therefore, we exposed the freshwater mussel Dreissena bugensis (D. bugensis) to in-depth characterized fragments in the same concentration and size range (20-120 µm): recycled polyethylene terephthalate from drinking bottles, polyamide, polystyrene, polylactic acid, and mussel shell fragments as natural particle control. Real-time valvometry, used to study behavioral responses via the movement of the mussels' valves, showed that mussels cannot distinguish between natural and MP particles, and therefore do not cease their filtration, as when exposed to dissolved pollutants. This unintentional ingestion led to polymer type-dependent adverse effects (activity of antioxidant enzymes and proteomic alterations), related to chemicals and residual monomers found in MP. Overall, recycled PET elicited the strongest negative effects, likely caused by anthranilamide, anthranilonitrile and butylated hydroxytoluene, contained in the fragments, which are toxic to aquatic organisms. As PET is among the most abundant MP in the environment, sublethal effects may gradually manifest at the population level, leading to irreversible ecosystem changes.

Abstract
The European Food Safety Authority is re-evaluating styrene for assessing the safety of food contact materials (FCM) such as polystyrene (PS) and started a systematic review of the data on migration levels in food. A restriction for styrene is expected in the near future. The main food contact application of PS is dairy packaging, mainly at refrigerated storage. In this study, seventeen dairy products packed in PS taken from the Italian and German markets were investigated. Styrene concentrations in the refrigerated dairy products (yogurt, cream) ranged from 5 to 30 µg/kg at the best before date, while in single serving portions of coffee creamer, which were stored at room temperature until the best before date of approx. 190 days, 401 µg/kg were measured. Among several parameters, the ratio between the surface contact area of the package and the quantity of the food packed, the time/temperature conditions of production/filling and storage of the products were identified as the main factors influencing styrene migration into food under realistic conditions. Yogurts fermented in the pots for approximately 8 h at 40–50 °C showed higher styrene levels than those fermented in an incubator and filled at 20 °C. The fat content might influence the styrene level but the effect, if any, was too small in relation to the variability of other parameters. Levels of styrene migrating into 50% ethanol food simulant under standardized condition (10 days/40 °C) were found to be much higher than levels in refrigerated foods. This raises the question as to whether compliance testing for PS plastics should be adapted taking into consideration the correlation between migration testing by laboratory simulations and migration into real food.

Abstract
Hydrogel refers to a three-dimensional cross-linked polymeric network made of synthetic or natural polymers that can hold water in its porous structure. The inclusion of hydrophilic groups in the polymer chains, such as amino, carboxyl, and hydroxyl groups, contributes to the hydrogel's water-holding ability. At physiological temperature and pH, these polymeric materials do not dissolve in water, but they do swell significantly in aqueous media. Hydrogel can be manufactured out of almost any water-soluble polymer, and it comes in a variety of chemical compositions and bulk physical properties. Hydrogel can also be made in a variety of ways. Hydrogel comes in a variety of physical shapes, including slabs, microparticles, nanoparticles, coatings, and films. Due to its ease of manufacture and self-application in clinical and fundamental applications, hydrogel has been widely exploited as a drug carrier. Contact lenses, artificial corneas, wound dressing, suture coating, catheters, and electrode sensors are some of the biomedical applications of hydrogels. The pigment color changes were observed from colorless to pale pink followed by dark reddish-pink. Anthocyanin was produced in large quantities and tested using a UV-visible spectrophotometer. At 450-550 nm, the largest peak (absorbance) was detected, indicating the presence of anthocyanin. The FTIR analysis of this study shows the different stretches of bonds at different peaks: 2918.309 (-C-H alkane stretch), 2812.12 (-C-H aldehyde weak intensity), 192320.37/cm (C-O bend), 21915.50, 2029.08/cm (-C=C arene group), 1906.94/cm (=C-H aromatics), 1797.78/cm (=C-H), 1707.94 (-C=O ketene), 1579.70, 1382.96 (C-H alkane strong bend), 889.18/cm (C-H aromatics plane bend), and 412.77/cm (-C-CI strong bond). The spectra of the PVA/chitosan film depict the peak's formation: 1571.88, 1529.55, 1500.62/cm (C-H alkene strong bend), 1492.90, 1483.26, 1467.83/cm (C-H alkene strong bond), 670.48, 443.63, 412.77/cm (-O-H carboxylic acids with great intensity), 1708.93 (-C=O ketone), and 1656.0/cm (alkenyl C=C stretch strong bond).

Abstract
Nanotechnology is being utilized in various industries to increase the quality, safety, shelf-life, and functional performance of commercial products. Nanoemulsions are thermodynamically unstable colloidal dispersions that consist of at least two immiscible liquids (typically oil and water), as well as various stabilizers (including emulsifiers, texture modifiers, ripening inhibitors, and weighting agents). They have unique properties that make them particularly suitable for some applications, including their small droplet size, high surface area, good physical stability, rapid digestibility, and high bioavailability. This article reviews recent developments in the formulation, fabrication, functional performance, and gastrointestinal fate of nanoemulsions suitable for use in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, nutraceutical, and food industries, as well as providing an overview of regulatory and health concerns. Nanoemulsion-based delivery systems can enhance the water-dispersibility, stability, and bioavailability of hydrophobic bioactive compounds. Nevertheless, they must be carefully formulated to obtain the required functional attributes. In particular, the concentration, size, charge, and physical properties of the nano-droplets must be taken into consideration for each specific application. Before launching a nanoscale product onto the market, determination of physicochemical characteristics of nanoparticles and their potential health and environmental risks should be evaluated. In addition, legal, consumer, and economic factors must also be considered when creating these systems.

Abstract
Consumers’ interest in a high-quality healthy diet is creating a growing trend in the food industry, focusing on the design and development of new products rich in bioactive compounds. This work involves the formulation of a vegetable sauce obtained from a mixture of pumpkin and pepper, the study of the evolution of bioactive compounds, quality and sensory parameters during storage at 4 and 25 °C, the influence of the packaging materials (PVC, PE/PA, and PS), and the migration degree. Antioxidant activity, polyphenols, carotenoids, and brown pigments contents were studied at 25 °C. Overall migration of the containers and the evolution of the physicochemical parameters and sensory attributes of the sauce were analyzed. All plastic materials showed an overall migration lower than the limit of EU and Mercosur Regulations. PVC better preserved polyphenols, antioxidant activity, and carotenoids until 50, 10, and 30 days, respectively, and lower development of brown pigments was observed. Higher storage temperatures favored undesirable changes in sensory attributes before 50 days of storage. PVC can be used to achieve greater conservation of the sensory attributes of sauce, regardless of the storage temperature. It could be considered the best material to preserve the bioactive properties and sensory attributes of the sauce until 30 days.

Abstract
Global consumption of take-out food increased rapidly and the chemicals in their containers become a potential source of human exposure. However, available information on heavy metals in the containers is extremely limited and the associated health risks remain poorly understood. We investigated Cd, Cr, Pb, Sb, Mn, Ni and Co in the popular take-out food containers from China and found the concentrations of these metals were moderate in comparison to the concentrations reported in other food contact materials. The metal concentrations in sampled containers by material type differed significantly, and higher concentrations of Cd, Pb, Sb, Mn and Co were observed in expanded polystyrene samples. The metals in the containers likely originated from intentional addition and/or contamination of materials. The potential release of the metals from containers was simulated and found the median leaching rates of Cd, Pb, Sb, Ni and Co in the range of 0.36-4.80% under typical conditions, which depended largely on the material types. Based on the observed leaching rates, we estimated that the summed carcinogenic risks of Cd, Pb, Ni and Co were unacceptable under specific exposure frequency, although the total non-carcinogenic risks from metal intake were low.

Abstract
The dependency on nonbiodegradable-based food packaging, increase in population growth, and persistent environmental problems are some of the driving forces in considering the development of biodegradable food packaging. This effort of green packaging has the potential to solve issues on plastic wastes through the combination of biodegradable composite-based food packaging with plant extracts, nanomaterials, or other types of polymer. Modified biodegradable materials have provided numerous alternatives for producing green packaging with mechanical strength, thermal stability, and barrier performance that are comparable to the conventional food packaging. To the best of our knowledge, the performance of nonbiodegradable and biodegradable composites as food packaging in terms of the above properties has not yet been reviewed. In this context, the capability of biodegradable polymers to substitute the nonbiodegradable polymers was emphasized to enhance the packaging biodegradation while retaining the mechanical strength, thermal stability, barrier properties, and antioxidant and antimicrobial or antibacterial activity. These are the ultimate goal in the food industry. This review will impart useful information on the properties of food packaging developed from different polymers and future outlook toward the development of green food packaging.

Abstract
Sustainability and recyclability are among the main driving forces in the plastics industry, since the pressure on crude oil resources and the environment is increasing. The aim of this research is to develop a sustainable thermoformable multilayer food packaging, based on co-polyesters, which is suitable for hot-fill applications and allows for recycling in a conventional waste stream. As a polymer material for the outer layer, we selected a modified polyethylene terephthalate (PETM), which is an amorphous co-polyester with a high glass transition temperature (±105 °C) and thus high thermal stability and transparency. The inner layer consists of 1,4-cyclohexylene dimethanol-modified polyethylene terephthalate (PETg), which is allowed to be recycled in a PET stream. Multilayers with a total thickness of 1 mm and a layer thickness distribution of 10/80/10 have been produced. To test the recyclability, sheets which contained 20% and 50% regrind of the initial multilayer in their middle PETg layer have been produced as well. The sheet produced from virgin pellets and the one containing 20% regrind in the middle layer showed no visible haze. This was not the case for the one containing 50% regrind in the middle layer, which was confirmed by haze measurements. The hot-fill test results showed no shrinkage or warpage for the multilayer trays for all temperatures applied, namely 95, 85, 75 and 65 °C. This is a remarkable improvement compared to pure PETg trays, which show a visible deformation after exposure to hot-fill conditions of 95 °C and 85 °C.

Abstract
Styrene is widely used in industrial applications. Inhalation exposure occurs in the industry. Some studies indicated that serum prolactin concentrations increased after exposure to styrene, while other studies found no change. In this systematic review, the search was done with the keywords styrene and prolactin in the PubMed, Science Direct, Web of Science and Scopus databases, regardless of the publication period. 118 studies were obtained and only seven articles were finally selected according to exclusion and inclusion criteria. The effect of styrene on prolactin secretion was selected in both human and animal studies. The increased response was seen in inhalation exposures. Subcutaneous exposure has no significant effect on prolactin levels. The observed responses were both dose-dependent and gender-dependent. Changes in serum prolactin were more frequent in women compared to exposed men. Dopamine depletion was not observed in all studies, so more tests on laboratory animals are necessary to clarify the possible mechanism.

Abstract
In this study, a sensitive, accurate and fast headspace - solid phase microextraction - gas chromatography - tandem mass spectrometry method (HS-SPME-GC-MS/MS) was developed and validated for the determination of styrene in various food matrices (mean recovery ranged from 90 to 116% with a relative standard deviation of ≤11%). The method was used for the determination of the concentration of styrene in 23 foodstuffs packed in polystyrene (PS) containers, as well as the levels of styrene migrating into various foods (water, milk, cheese or cream) from 14 tableware or kitchenware articles made of styrene plastics. All samples were collected from the Greek market in 2020. Styrene concentrations in the packaged foods ranged from 0.4 to 160 ng g-1 with the highest concentration found in a meat product packed in a foamed PS tray. It is worth noting that 56% of PS packaged dairy products and desserts had a styrene concentration higher than 10 ng g-1. Particularly high levels of styrene that have not previously been reported, up to 46 ng g-1, were found in dairy products for children. The highest level of styrene migration from tableware or kitchenware articles, 89 ng g-1, was observed when disposable cups from foamed PS were filled with milk at 70℃ for 2 hours. The implications of these findings for the assessment of the potential exposure of the Greek consumers to styrene migrating from PS food contact materials are discussed.

Abstract
Migration of additives is an important issue for proper application in food packaging. In this work, propionylated waxy and normal starch-based nanocomposites (PW-N and PN-N) with two different amylopectin content were immersed in distilled water, and structural changes and migration mechanism of plasticizer (triacetin) were discussed in detail. Results showed that when immersion time was prolonged to 150 h, small crystals of PN-N disappeared, and amorphous structures formed gradually in PW-N and PN-N. Exfoliated structures still remained in PW-N with prolonged immersion time, while exfoliated structures gradually formed from intercalated ones in PN-N, and the peak representing d001 (d-spacing) at q = 1.70 nm-1 faded. The migration mechanism of triacetin obeyed the first-order kinetic model and Fick's law; furthermore, in comparison with PW-N, PN-N showed a larger diffusion coefficient (D2 = 12.13 μm2·h-1). These results contributed to expanding the application of starch-based nanocomposites in future environmentally friendly food packaging.

Abstract
The purpose of the present research was to fabricate ethylcellulose (ECL)/polycaprolactone (PCL)/gelatin (GEL) electrospun nanofibers containing Zataria multiflora essential oil (ZEO) and zinc oxide nanoparticle (ZnO) to provide an appropriate substrate for food packaging. The ECL/PCL/GEL was incorporated with ZEO and ZnO at the concentrations of 10, 20, 30 and 50 wt% and 3 wt%, respectively. The results of ECL/PCL/GEL/ZEO/ZnO nanofiber exhibited uniform morphology with a mean diameter ranging from 361.85 ± 18.7 to 467.33 ± 14.50 nm and enhanced thermal stability. The ECL/PCL/GEL/ZEO/ZnO nanofiber had the highest mechanical parameters, such as young's modulus (437.49 ± 18), tensile strength (7.88 ± 0.7), and elongation at break (5.02 ± 0.6) and water contact angle (61.13 ± 0.5), compared with the other nanofibers. The cell viability during 48 and 72 h was obtained to be about more than 80% for all the nanofibers. Additionally, the ECL/PCL/GEL incorporated with 50% ZEO and 3% ZnO displayed the highest antioxidant activity (34.61 ± 1.98%) and antifungal properties against Penicillium notatum and Aspergillus niger. In general, the ECL/PCL/GEL with the weight ratio of 20:70:10 nanofiber incorporated with 30% ZEO and 3% ZnO was obtained to have appropriate mechanical, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties and thermal stability.

Abstract
Food is an integral part of everyone’s life. Disposable food serving utensils and tableware are a very convenient solution, especially when the possibility of the use of traditional dishes and cutlery is limited (e.g., takeaway meals). As a result, a whole range of products is available on the market: plates, trays, spoons, forks, knives, cups, straws, and more. Both the form of the product (adapted to the distribution and sales system) as well as its ecological aspect (biodegradability and life cycle) should be of interest to producers and consumers, especially considering the clearly growing trend of “eco-awareness”. This is particularly important in the case of single-use products. The aim of the study was to present the current trends regarding disposable utensils intended for contact with food in the context of their biodegradability. This paper has summarized not only conventional polymers but also their modern alternatives gaining the attention of manufacturers and consumers of single-use products (SUPs).

Abstract
Environment protection and food safety are two critical issues in the world. In this review, a novel approach which integrates statistical study and subjective discussion was adopted to review recent advances on environment and food safety. Firstly, a scientometric-based statistical study was conducted based on 4904 publications collected from the Web of Science Core Collection database. It was found that the research on environment and food safety was growing steadily from 2001 to 2020. Interestingly, the statistical analysis of most-cited papers, titles, abstracts, keywords, and research areas revealed that the research on environment and food safety was diverse and multidisciplinary. In addition to the scientometric study, strategies to protect environment and ensure food safety were critically discussed, followed by a discussion on the emerging research topics, including emerging contaminates (e.g., microplastics), rapid detection of contaminants (e.g., biosensors), and environment friendly food packaging materials (e.g., biodegradable polymers). Finally, current challenges and future research directions were proposed.

Abstract
Food microbial contamination not only poses the problems of food insecurity and economic loss, but also contributes to food waste, which is another global environmental problem. Therefore, effective packaging is a compelling obstacle for shielding food items from outside contaminants and maintaining its quality. Traditionally, food is packaged with plastic that is rarely recyclable, negatively impacting the environment. Bio-based materials have attracted widespread attention for food packaging applications since they are biodegradable, renewable, and have a low carbon footprint. They provide a great opportunity to reduce the extensive use of fossil fuels and develop food packaging materials with good properties, addressing environmental problems and contributing significantly to sustainable development. Presently, the developments in food chemistry, technology, and biotechnology have allowed us to fine-tune new methodologies useful for addressing major safety and environmental concerns regarding packaging materials. This review presents a comprehensive overview of the development and potential for application of new bio-based materials from different sources in antimicrobial food packaging, including carbohydrate (polysaccharide)-based materials, protein-based materials, lipid-based materials, antibacterial agents, and bio-based composites, which can solve the issues of both environmental impact and prevent foodborne pathogens and spoilage microorganisms. In addition, future trends are discussed, as well as the antimicrobial compounds incorporated in packaging materials such as nanoparticles (NPs), nanofillers (NFs), and bio-nanocomposites.

Abstract
Nanotechnology has provided new opportunities for the food industry with its applications in food packaging. The addition of nanoparticles, such as clay, silver and copper, can improve the mechanical and antimicrobial properties of food packaging. However, nanoparticles may have an adverse impact on human health. This has led to legislative and regulatory concerns. The inhibitory effects of nano packaging on different microorganisms, such as Salmonella, E. coli, and molds, have been studied. Nanoparticles, like other materials, may have a diverse set of properties that need to be determined. In this review, different features of silver, clay and copper nanoparticles, such as their anti-microbial, cell toxicity, genetic toxicity, mechanical properties, and migration, are critically evaluated in the case of food packaging. Specifically, the viewpoints of WHO, FDA, and ESFA, concerning the nano-silver application in food packaging, are discussed as well.

Abstract
Recently, soil contamination with microplastics has emerged as a serious global environmental concern that has necessitated more research on their potential impacts on soil biota. We investigated the acute and chronic toxicity of 2 different polystyrene microplastics, pure versus commercial (0-0.5% w/w in soil; sized 65-125 µm) on earthworm mortality, reproduction, and genotoxicity. Whereas the microplastics showed no acute toxicity in terms of mortality, reproduction was adversely affected in both parents (F0) and first filial generation (F1) of earthworms, with >50% reduction in juvenile production at 0.5% microplastics concentration in soil. Also, significant genotoxicity in terms of DNA damage was observed in the F0 and F1 earthworms. Chemical analysis of microplastic-exposed soils showed the presence of several benzene derivatives that are associated with polystyrene particles. Our study, for the first time to our knowledge, demonstrated the long-term adverse effects on earthworms of polystyrene microplastics even at environmentally relevant concentrations. Abstract
Synthetic plastic oligomers can interact with the cells of living organisms by different ways. They can be intentionally administered to the human body as part of nanosized biomedical devices. They can be inhaled by exposed workers, during the production of multicomponent, polymer-based nanocomposites. They can leak out of food packaging. Most importantly, they can result from the degradation of plastic waste, and enter the food chain. A physicochemical characterization of the effects of synthetic polymers on the structure and dynamics of cell components is still lacking. Here, we combine a wide spectrum of experimental techniques (calorimetry, x-ray, and neutron scattering) with atomistic Molecular Dynamics simulations to study the interactions between short chains of polystyrene (25 monomers) and model lipid membranes (DPPC, in both gel and fluid phase). We find that doping doses of polystyrene oligomers alter the thermal properties of DPPC, stabilizing the fluid lipid phase. They perturb the membrane structure and dynamics, in a concentration-dependent fashion. Eventually, they modify the mechanical properties of DPPC, reducing its bending modulus in the fluid phase. Our results call for a systematic, interdisciplinary assessment of the mechanisms of interaction of synthetic, everyday use polymers with cell membranes.
