β-Glucosidases are a limiting factor in the conversion of cellulose to glucose for the subsequent ethanol production. Here, β-glucosidase production by Malbranchea pulchella was optimized using Composite Central Designs and Response Surface Methodologies from a medium designed. The coefficient of determination (R²) was 0.9960, F-value was very high, and the lack of fit was found to be non-significant. This indicates a statistic valid and predictive result. M. pulchella enzymatic extract was successfully tested as an enzymatic cocktail in a mixture design using sugarcane bagasse, soybean hull and barley bagasse. We proved that the optimization of the β-glucosidase production and the application in hydrolysis using unexpansive biomass and agricultural wastes can be accomplished by means of statistical methodologies. The strategy presented here can be useful for the improvement of enzyme production and the hydrolysis process, arising as an alternative for bioeconomy.

Sildenafil 4.0-Integrated Synthetic Chemistry, Formulation and Analytical Strategies Effecting Immense Therapeutic and Societal Impact in the Fourth Industrial Era

Sildenafil is a potent selective, reversible inhibitor of phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction and pulmonary arterial hypertension. Whilst twenty years have passed since its original approval by the US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA), sildenafil enters the fourth industrial era catalyzing the treatment advances against erectile dysfunction and pulmonary hypertension. The plethora of detailed clinical data accumulated and the two sildenafil analogues marketed, namely tadalafil and vardenafil, signify the relevant therapeutic and commercial achievements. The pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic behavior of the drug appears complex, interdependent and of critical importance whereas the treatment of special population cohorts is considered. The diversity of the available formulation strategies and their compatible administration routes, extend from tablets to bolus suspensions and from per os to intravenous, respectively, inheriting the associated strengths and weaknesses. In this comprehensive review, we attempt to elucidate the multi-disciplinary elements spanning the knowledge fields of chemical synthesis, physicochemical properties, pharmacology, clinical applications, biopharmaceutical profile, formulation approaches for different routes of administration and analytical strategies, currently employed to guide the development of sildenafil-based compositions.

Production, purification, and process optimization of intracellular pigment from novel psychrotolerant Paenibacillus sp. BPW19

A pink pigment-producing bacterial strain was isolated from wastewater and identified as Paenibacillus sp. BPW19. The motile bacterial strain was Gram-positive, acid fermenting, glucose, sucrose utilizing and rod-shaped with an average cell length of 1.55 μm as studied under the Environmental Scanning Electron Microscope. Even though being psychrotolerant, the cell growth condition of BPW19 was optimized as 25 ºC along with pH 8, and 2.25% inoculum concentration considering the operational ease of the production. Sonication assisted solvent extraction produced 5.41% crude pigment which showed zones of exclusion against gram-negative strains Escherichia coli DH5α, Enterobacter sp. EtK3, and Klebsiella sp. SHC1. Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry analysis of the crude pigment exhibited the dominant presence of major compounds as dotriacontane; 3,7 dimethyl 7 octanal; 1-eicosene and erucic acid. While column chromatography (ethanol:chloroform in 1:4 (v/v) ratio) purified pigment was identified as erucic acid using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance with a net yield of 3.06%.

Integrated ozonation assisted electrocoagulation process for the removal of cyanide from steel industry wastewater

This work focuses on the removal of cyanide, chemical oxygen demand (COD), biological oxygen demand (BOD), and chloride from biological oxidation treated (BOT) effluent of the steel industry by integrated ozonation assisted electrocoagulation method. The removal efficiency of the pollutants was found to be inefficient when the electrocoagulation or ozonation process was performed separately. However, a combination of ozonation and electrocoagulation gives a highly satisfactory result. Such an integrated approach for the treatment of BOT effluent has not been previously investigated. The effects of operating variables viz. ozone generation rate, current density, and analysis time on pollutant removal were primarily analyzed for the hybrid process. The experimental operating condition was optimized and was seen that ozone generation rate of 1.33 mg s^-1, ozonation time of 40 min, a current density of 100 A m^-2, and electrolysis time of 30 min were sufficient for reducing the pollutant concentration below its permissible limits. The removal efficiencies of the combined process at optimum conditions were 99.8%, 94.7%, 95%, and 46.5% for cyanide, COD, BOD, and chloride ions, respectively. A kinetic study was performed for the degradation of the pollutants during ozonation. The pseudo-first-order kinetic model was found to be best suited for the analysis with the highest R² value of 0.99 for cyanide, COD, BOD, and chloride, respectively. The mass transfer study conducted further showed that the volumetric mass transfer coefficient, K_la, was increased with that of the ozone generation rate. Cost estimation of the hybrid process was done and compared with that of the other reported integrated process.

Effect of ultrasonic irradiation power on sonochemical synthesis of gold nanoparticles

In this work, optimized size distribution and optical properties in the colloidal synthesis of gold nanoparticles (GNPs) were obtained using a proposed ultrasonic irradiation assisted Turkevich-Frens method. The effect of three nominal ultrasound (20 kHz) irradiation powers: 60, 150, and 210 W have been analyzed as size and shape control parameters. The GNPs colloidal solutions were obtained from chloroauric acid (HAuCl₄) and trisodium citrate (C₆H₅Na₃O₇·2H₂O) under continuous irradiation for 1 h without any additional heat or stirring. The surface plasmon resonance (SPR) was monitored in the UV-Vis spectra every 10 min to found the optimal time for localized SPR wavelength (λ_LSPR), and the 210 sample procedure has reduced the λ_LSPR localization at 20 min, while 150 and 60 samples have showed λ_LSPR at 60 min. The nucleation and growth of GNPs showed changes in shape and size distribution associated with physical (cavitation, temperature) and chemical (radical generation, pH) conditions in the aqueous solution. The results showed quasi-spherical GNPs as pentakis dodecahedron (λ_LSPR = 560 nm), triakis icosahedron (λ_LSPR = 535 nm), and tetrakis hexahedron (λ_LSPR = 525 nm) in a size range from 12 to 16 nm. Chemical effects of ultrasound irradiation were suggested in the disproportionation process, electrons of AuCl₂^- are rapidly exchanged through the gold surface. After AuCl₄^- and Cl^- were desorbed, a tetrachloroaurate complex was recycled for the two-electron reduction by citrate, aurophilic interaction between complexes AuCl₂^-, electrons exchange, and gold seeds, the deposition of new gold atoms on the surface promoting the growth of GNPs. These mechanisms are enhanced by the effects of ultrasound, such as cavitation and transmitted energy into the solution. These results show that the plasmonic response from the reported GNPs can be tuned using a simple methodology with minimum infrastructure requirements. Moreover, the production method could be easily scalable to meet industrial manufacturing needs.

Selective determination of closantel by artificial neural network-genetic algorithm optimized molecularly imprinted polypyrrole using UV-visible spectrophotometry

A molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) for the selective solid-phase extraction (SPE) was prepared applying polymerization of pyrrole monomer in the presence of closantel (CLS) as a template molecule. The quantitative measurements were carried out using UV-Vis spectrophotometry. Several important parameters control the performance of polypyrrole sorbent. The influence of seven factors including loading time, polymerization time, amount of sorbent, stirring rate, desorption time, initiator concentration and monomer to template ratio were investigated. The optimization of parameters was performed using Plackett-Burman design (PBD), central composite design (CCD), artificial neural network (ANN) and genetic algorithm (GA). The Pareto plot showed that the effects of loading time, reaction time and amount of sorbent are most important to the process. These significant factors were investigated using CCD and the obtained data were used to train the ANN. The predicted model obtained from the trained ANN was introduced to GA as the fitness function to be optimized. The calibration curve demonstrated linearity over a concentration range of 0.010-10 mM with a correlation coefficient (R²) of 0.9833 under optimal condition. The synthesized MIP sorbent showed a good selectivity and sensitivity toward CLS. The limit of detection (LOD) for CLS was obtained 1.0 μM. The real sample analysis was performed to determine CLS in pharmaceutical and human serum samples.

Removal of colloidal precipitation plugging with high-power ultrasound

Petroleum is a continuous and dynamically stable colloidal system. In the process of oil extraction, transportation, and post-treatment, the stability of the petroleum sol system is easily destroyed, resulting in asphaltenes precipitation that can make pore throat, oil wells, and pipelines blocked, thereby damaging the reservoir and reducing oil recovery. In this paper, removing near-well plugging caused by asphaltene deposition with high-power ultrasound is investigated. Six PZT transducers with different parameters were used to carry out the experimental study. Results show that ultrasonic frequency is one important factor for removing colloidal precipitation plugging in cores, it could not be too high nor too low. The optimum ultrasonic frequency is 25 kHz; Selecting transducers with a higher power is an effective way to improve the removal efficiency. The optimum ultrasonic power is 1000 W. With the increase of ultrasonic treatment time, the recovery rate reaches the maximum and tends to be stable. ultrasonic processing time should be controlled within 120 min. Besides, three methods - ultrasonic treatment alone, chemical injection alone, and ultrasound-chemical method - for removing colloidal precipitation plugging are compared. Results indicate that the ultrasound-assisted chemical method is better than chemical injection alone or ultrasonic treatment alone to remove colloidal sediment in the core. Finally, the mechanism of the ultrasonic deplugging technique is analyzed from three aspects: cavitation effect, the thermal effect, and mechanical vibration.

Green synthesis and environmental application of iron-based nanomaterials and nanocomposite: A review

Green chemistry has been proven to be an efficient route for nanoparticle synthesis. Plant extract based green synthesis of various nanoparticles is extensively studied since the last decade. This paper "Green synthesis and environmental application of Iron-based nanomaterials and nanocomposite: A review" unveils all the possible greener techniques for the synthesis of iron-based nanoparticles and nanocomposites. The use of different plant sources, microorganisms, and various biocompatible green reagents such as biopolymers, cellulose, haemoglobin, and glucose for the synthesis of iron nanoparticles reported in the last decade are summarized. The microwave method, along with hydrothermal synthesis due to their lower energy consumption are also been referred to as a green route. Apart from different plant parts, waste leaves and roots used for the synthesis of iron nanoparticles are extensively briefed here. This review is thus compact in nature which covers all the broad areas of green synthesis of iron nanoparticles (NPs) and iron-based nanocomposites. Detailed discussion on environmental applications of the various green synthesized iron NPs and their composites with performance efficiency is provided in this review article. The advantages of bimetallic iron-based nanocomposites over iron NPs in various environmental applications are discussed in detail. The hazards and toxic properties of green synthesized iron-based NPs are compared with those obtained from chemical methods. The prospects and challenges section of this article provides a vivid outlook of adapting such useful technique into a more versatile process with certain inclusions which may encourage and provide a new direction to future research.

Rapid ultrasound-assisted microextraction of atorvastatin in the sample of blood plasma by nickel metal organic modified with alumina nanoparticles

In the present work, nickel-1,4-benzenedioxyacetic acid was synthesized as a rod-like metal organic material and then modified with alumina nanoparticles to synthesize nickel metal organic modified-Al₂ O₃ nanoparticles. The material was found as an efficient sorbent for the enrichment of atorvastatin in human blood plasma. After the extraction of the sample of plasma by ultrasound-assisted dispersive solid phase extraction, high performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet was used to determine the quantitatively pre-concentrated interest analyte. The conditions for optimum extraction were achieved by the optimization of the volume of eluent, dosage of the sorbent, and time of sonication. Solution pH of 7.0, 250 μL of ethanol, 45 mg of the sorbent, and 10 min of sonication time were the conditions for extracting the atorvastatin maximum recovery of higher than 97.0%. By using desirability function for the optimization of the process, the present method showed a response that was linear ranging from 0.2 to 800 ng/mL with regression coefficient of 0.999 in the plasma of human blood with a satisfactory detection limit of 0.05 ng/mL, while the precision of interday for the current method was found to be <5%. It can be concluded that dispersive solid phase extraction method is effective for the extraction of atorvastatin from human plasma samples (97.4-102%) due to its easy operation, simplicity, repeatability, and reliability.

Technological advancement in the synthesis and applications of lignin-based nanoparticles derived from agro-industrial waste residues: A review

Over the years, lignin has drawn a great deal of interest for their potential use as bio-polymers due to the presence of high amount of phenolic compounds, non-polluting feature and cost-competitiveness as compared to synthetic polymers. However, in order to fast-track their development, different attempts are made towards the usage of lignin in nano form since it exhibits some unique properties in nanoscale range. The present review article provides a detail analysis on the recent advancement in the synthesis and applications of lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) derived from agro-industrial waste residues. In view of that, an in-depth morphological analysis was reviewed to assess the structural influence on the characteristics of LNPs. Further, application of LNPs is explored in different fields including bio-medical engineering, pharmaceuticals, skin-care products and food industries. Finally, the paper is concluded discussing various challenges associated with the synthesis, modification and development with an aspiration of futuristic developments. The readers of this review article will be highly benefitted after acquiring a comprehensive knowledge on LNPs and its different synthesis processes along with various applications.

An alkaline dissolution-based method using tetramethylammonium hydroxide for metals determination in cow milk samples

This study approaches the development of a method for the determination of Ca, Mg, Zn, and Fe in liquid and powdered cow milk. The method is based on sample dissolution assisted by ultrasound energy in tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH) media and determination by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). Central composite design (CCD) associated with response surface methodology and desirability function allowed the fast and efficient optimization of the variables involved in the performance of the dissolution. The developed dissolution method allowed Ca, Fe, Zn, and Mg determination in milk samples with adequate analytical characteristics for these determinations. Addition/recovery tests and analysis of a certified reference material of skimmed powdered milk (ERM-BD150) have shown that this method presents enough accuracy to carry out these analyses.

Ultrasound-assisted adsorption/desorption for the enrichment and purification of flavonoids from baobab (Adansonia digitata) fruit pulp

This work described the purification and enrichment of flavonoids from baobab (Adansonia digitata) fruit pulp (BFP) by ultrasound-assisted adsorption/desorption procedure using macroporous resins. Four resins were tested and HPD-500 polar resin exhibited the best adsorption/desorption properties. Based on preliminary experiments and literature reports, the effects of various ultrasonic conditions including high power short time (HPST, 540 W for 5 min), medium power medium time (MPMT, 270 W for 15 min) and low power long time (LPLT, 45 W for 30 min) as well as different temperatures (T = 25-45 °C) on the adsorption of Total Flavonoids Content (TFC) were investigated in comparison with orbital shaking/no sonication (NS). Also, the effect of ultrasound on the desorption capacity and recovery of TFC was determined at different concentrations of ethanol (30-100%). Remarkably, ultrasonic treatment significantly increased the adsorption/desorption capacity and recovery and shortened the equilibrium time. The pseudo-second-order kinetic and Freundlich isotherm models better delineated the adsorption process under ultrasound. Moreover, the adsorption process was both spontaneous and thermodynamically favourable with physical adsorption and multilinear intraparticle diffusion being the predominant mechanisms of the whole process. HPST treatment at 25 °C with 80% ethanol as the desorption solvent most noticeably enhanced the adsorption/desorption of flavonoids and contributed to the highest recovery of TFC, Total Phenolic Content (TPC), and antioxidant capacity in addition to a 5-8-fold reduction in total sugar and acid contents when compared with NS treatment. Moreover, HPLC analysis revealed that the content of nine out of thirteen phenolic compounds from the HPST treatment was the highest, and the individual flavonoids content increased by 2-3-fold compared with the other treatments. Our analyses suggested that ultrasound can be employed as a practical approach to intensify the adsorption and desorption of functional compounds in BFP.

Development of selective preconcentration/clean-up method for imidazolinone herbicides determination in natural water and rice samples by HPLC-PAD using an imazethapyr imprinted poly(vinylimidazole-TRIM)

The development of a novel molecularly imprinted solid-phase extraction (MISPE) method for simultaneous preconcentration of imazapyr (IMP), imazapic (IMZ) and imazethapyr (IMT) with determination by HPLC-PAD (High performance liquid chromatography - photodiode-array detector) is proposed. The polymer synthesis was performed using imazethapyr as template molecule and 1-vinylimidazole as functional monomer. The method is based on preconcentration of 100.0 mL of sample through 200.0 mg of molecularly imprinted poly(vinylimidazole-TRIM) (MIP-1VN) at pH 4.0, followed by elution with 2.0 mL of MeOH:CH₂Cl₂:HAc (34:62:4, v/v). The range of analytical curve (0.29-200.0, 0.21-200.0 and 0.15-200.0 µg L^-1), limits of detection (0.09, 0.06 and 0.04 µg L^-1) and preconcentration factors (92, 96 and 98) determined for the herbicides, IMP, IMZ and IMT, respectively, were greatly superior when compared with those ones obtained with commercial adsorbents. The analytical method was successfully applied to spiked surface water and rice samples with good results of recovery values (86-107%).

Influence of ultrasonic amplitude, temperature, time and solvent concentration on bioactive compounds extraction from propolis

An ultrasound assisted method was investigated to extract bioactive compounds from propolis. This method was based on a simple ultrasound treatment using ethanol as an extraction medium to facilitate the disruption of the propolis cells. Four different variables were chosen for determining the influence on the extraction efficiency: ultrasonic amplitude, ethanol concentration, temperature and time; the variables were selected by Box-Behnken design experiments. These parameters were optimised in order to obtain the highest yield, and the results exhibited the optimum conditions for achieving the goal as 100% amplitude of ultrasonic treatment, 70% solvent concentration, 58 °C and 30 min. The extraction yield under modified optimum extraction conditions was, as follows: 459.92 mg GAE/g of TPC, 220.62 mg QE/g of TFC and 1.95% of balsam content. The results showed that the ultrasound assisted extraction was suitable for bioactive compounds extraction from propolis. The most abundant phenolic compound was kaempferol (228.8 mg/g propolis) followed by myricetin (115.5 mg/g propolis), luteolin (27.2 mg/g propolis) and quercetin (25.2 mg/g propolis).

Magnetic Cu: CuO-GO nanocomposite for efficient dispersive micro-solid phase extraction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from vegetable, fruit, and environmental water samples by liquid chromatographic determination

In this research, we presented a magnetic dispersive micro-solid phase extraction (MD-μ-SPE) method coupled with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) based on the use of magnetic Cu: CuO-Graphene Oxide (GO) nanocomposite (Fe₃O₄/Cu: CuO/GO-NC) for the separation and preconcentration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), i.e. naphthalene (Nap), phenanthrene (Phe), anthracene (Ant), and pyrene (Pyr), in vegetable (onion, tomato, carrot, herb, watermelon, lettuce, eggplant, and chili pepper), fruit (apple, watermelon, and grape), wastewater, and water samples. The MD-μ-SPE of PAHs in matrix samples was carried out, and the impacts of pH, ionic strength, extraction time, temperature, eluent volume, and sorbent mass on the recovery of PAHs were investigated by using Placket-Burman design (PBD). In addition, by using the central composite design (CCD), the best combination of each important variable was measured. Sorbent mass of 14 mg, eluent volume of 200 μL, and 12 min extraction time at the central level of other factors were optimal conditions of pretreatment for the highest extraction recovery (ER%) of trace PAHs. Under the optimal conditions, the method proposed herein provided high enrichment factors ranged from 116.51 to 133.05, good linearity in the range of 10-3800 ng mL^-1 for Pyr, 3.0-3500 ng mL^-1 for Phe, 5.0-3200 ng mL^-1 for Nap, and 5.0-3000 ng mL^-1 for Ant with coefficient of determination (R²) values between 0.9889 and 0.9963, low limits of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) in the range of 0.015-0.061 and 0.485-2.034 ng mL^-1, respectively, and also satisfactory spiked recoveries (between 95.1% and 106.8%) with the relative standard deviations (RSDs) values in the range of 1.73%-5.62%. The Fe₃O₄/Cu: CuO/GO-NC-based MD-μ-SPE followed by HPLC-UV corroborated promising results for the convenient and effective determination of PAHs in the samples of vegetables, fruits, and environmental water. The results of this study revealed that our developed method is easy, feasible, precise, highly effective, and convenient to operate for the trace analysis of PAHs in different real samples. The extraction recovery was about 90% of the initial recovery after the sorbent usage for three times; therefore, the Fe₃O₄/Cu: CuO/GO-NC can readily be regenerated.

Ultrasonic-assisted recycling of Nile tilapia fish scale biowaste into low-cost nano-hydroxyapatite: Ultrasonic-assisted adsorption for Hg2+ removal from aqueous solution followed by "turn-off" fluorescent sensor based on Hg2+-graphene quantum dots

This study was planned to recycle calcium and the phosphorus-rich Nile tilapia fish scale biowaste into nano-hydroxyapatite (FHAP), using ultrasonic-assisted extraction of calcium and phosphorus from fish scales, which was optimized in term of extraction time, acid concentration, extraction temperature, and ultrasonic power. These two elements were determined simultaneously by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry and the FHAP phase was formed upon addition of the extracted element solution in alkaline medium using homogenous precipitation assisted with ultrasound energy. The FHAP adsorbent was characterized by x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller. A combination of FHAP and the ultrasonic method was then used to remove Hg²⁺ from aqueous solution. Four significant variables affecting Hg²⁺ removal, namely, adsorbent dosage, pH, ultrasonic power, and adsorption time, were studied. The results exhibited that the optimal conditions for maximizing the removal of Hg²⁺ were 0.02 g adsorbent dosage, pH 8, 0.4 kW ultrasonic power, 20 min adsorption time, and 30 °C adsorption temperature. The sorption mechanism of Hg²⁺ was revealed by isotherm modeling, indicating that FHAP adsorbent has a potential for Hg²⁺ removal in aqueous media with the maximum adsorption capacity being 227.27 mg g^-1. This adsorption behavior is in agreement with the Langmuir model as reflected by a satisfactory R² value of 0.9967, when the kinetics data were fitted with pseudo-second-order. Therefore, the FHAP could be an alternative adsorbent for the ultrasonic-assisted removal of Hg²⁺ at very high efficiency and within a very short period of time.

Au Quantum Dot/Nickel Tetraminophthalocyanaine-Graphene Oxide-Based Photoelectrochemical Microsensor for Ultrasensitive Epinephrine Detection

Owing to the importance of epinephrine as a neurotransmitter and hormone, sensitive methods are required for its detection. We have developed a sensitive photoelectrochemical (PEC) microsensor based on gold quantum dots (Au QDs) decorated on a nickel tetraminophthalocyanine-graphene oxide (NiTAPc-Gr) composite. NiTAPc was covalently attached to the surface of graphene oxide to prepare NiTAPc-Gr, which exhibits remarkable stability and PEC performance. In situ growth of Au QDs on the NiTAPc-Gr surface was achieved using chemical reduction at room temperature. The synthesized materials were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Au QDs@NiTAPc-Gr provided a much greater photocurrent than NiTAPc-Gr, making it suitable for the ultrasensitive PEC detection of epinephrine. The proposed PEC strategy exhibited a wide linear range of 0.12-243.9 nM with a low detection limit of 17.9 pM (S/N = 3). Additionally, the fabricated PEC sensor showed excellent sensitivity, remarkable stability, and good selectivity. This simple, fast, and low-cost strategy was successfully applied to the analysis of human serum samples, indicating the potential of this method for clinical detection applications.

Optimization of membrane modification using SiO2 for robust anti-fouling performance with calcium-humic acid feed in membrane distillation

The goal of this study was to prepare a robust anti-wetting and anti-fouling polyethersulfone (PES) membrane for the rejection of a highly saline (NaCl and CaCl₂·2H₂O) feed solution containing humic acid (HA) in direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD). Response surface methodology (RSM) was used to determine the optimum formulation of the used materials. The variable factors selected were polydimethyl siloxane (PDMS) and silica (SiO₂); liquid entry pressure (LEP) and contact angle (CA) were selected as responses. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis confirmed the SiO₂ deposition and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) test evidenced the new functional groups i.e., Si-OH, siloxane, and C-F bond vibrations at 3446, 1099 cm^-1, and 1150-1240 cm^-1 respectively on the membrane surface. The average roughness (Ra) was increased four times for the coated membranes (0.202-0.242 µm) as compared to that for pristine PES membrane (0.053 µm). The optimum PES-13 membrane exhibited consistent flux of 12 LMH and salt rejection (> 99%) with anti-fouling characteristic in DCMD using the feed solution of 3.5 wt% NaCl + 10 mM CaCl₂·2H₂O + 10 mg L^-1 HA. The PES-13 membrane may therefore be a key membrane for application in DCMD against CaCl₂·2H₂O-containing salty solutions with HA.

Dispersive micro-solid phase extraction based on Fe3O4@SiO2@Ti-MOF as a magnetic nanocomposite sorbent for the trace analysis of caffeic acid in the medical extracts of plants and water samples prior to HPLC-UV analysis

In this work, Fe₃O₄@SiO₂@Ti-MOF-NCs, as an efficient sorbent, have been synthesized in a laboratory and utilized for extracting CA in the medical extracts of plants and water samples before their analysis by HPLC.

Cu- and S- @SnO2 nanoparticles loaded on activated carbon for efficient ultrasound assisted dispersive µSPE-spectrophotometric detection of quercetin in Nasturtium officinale extract and fruit juice samples: CCD-RSM design

A simple, rapid, and efficient method of dispersive micro solid phase extraction (D-μ-SPE) combined with UV-Vis spectrophotometry via ultrasound-assisted (UA) was applied for the determination and preconcentration of quercetin in extract of watercress (Nasturtium officinale), fruit juice and water samples. The sorbent in this method was synthesized by doping copper and sulfide into the tetragonal structure of SnO₂-nanoparticles (Cu- and S- @SnO₂-NPs) and subsequently loading it on activated carbon (AC). The D-μ-SPE parameters with direct effect on the extraction efficiency of the targeted analyte, such as sample pH, volume of eluent, sorbent mass and ultrasound time were optimized using central composite design method. Under optimized conditions, the calibration graph for quercetin was linear in the range of 20-4000 ng mL^-1; the limit of detection and quantitation were 4.35 and 14.97 ng mL^-1, respectively and the enrichment factor was 95.24. Application of this method to analyze spiked extract, fruit juice and water samples resulted in acceptable recovery values ranging from 90.3% to 97.28% with intra-day and inter-day relative standard deviation values lower than 6.0% in all cases. Among the equilibrium isotherms tested, Langmuir was found to be the best fitted model with maximum sorption capacity of 39.37 mg g^-1, suggesting a homogeneous mode of sorption for quercetin.

Synthesis of Fe3O4@CuS@Ni2P-CNTs magnetic nanocomposite for sonochemical-assisted sorption and pre-concentration of trace Allura Red from aqueous samples prior to HPLC-UV detection: CCD-RSM design

A simple procedure based on ultrasound-assisted (UA) dispersive micro solid phase extraction (D-μ-SPE) was applied for sorption of trace amount Allura Red (AR) in fruit juice and water samples. After loading process by UA-D-μ-SPE, the concentrated AR was eluted and monitored using high-performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet -visible detector (HPLC-UV). The best operational conditions were obtained as follows: pH = 3.0, 8 mg of the sorbent, sonication time of 4.5 min and 0.16 mL of THF as elution solvent. Under the optimum operational conditions, the present method was acceptable for AR quantification in the range of 1.0-5000 ng mL^-1. The repeatability based on RSD with the amount of 1.67-3.18%, low LOD (0.198 ng mL^-1) and LOQ (0.659 ng mL^-1) were obtained. The UA-D-μ-SPE-HPLC-UV method was successfully applied for trace quantification of AR from water and commercial fruit juice samples supplied from local supermarkets, and acceptable relative recoveries over the range of 97.7-105.4% with RSDs ≤5.50% were obtained.

Study on regeneration effect and mechanism of high-frequency ultrasound on biological activated carbon

High frequency ultrasonic radiation technology was developed as a novel and efficient means of regenerating spent biological activated carbon (BAC) used in drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs). The results of this study indicated that high frequency ultrasonic treatment could recover the spent BAC, to some extent, with the following optimal conditions: a frequency of 400 kHz, sonication power of 60 W, water temperature of 30 °C, and sonication time of 6 min. Under the above conditions, the iodine value increased from 300 mg/g to 409 mg/g, the volume of total pores and micropores increased from 0.2600 cm³/g and 0.1779 cm³/g to 0.3560 cm³/g and 0.2662 cm³/g, respectively; the specific surface area of micropores and the mean pore diameter expanded from 361.15 m²/g and 2.0975 nm to 449.92 m²/g and 2.1268 nm, respectively. The biological activity increased from 0.0297 mgO₂/gC·h to 0.0521 mgO₂/gC·h, while the biomass decreased from 203 nmolP/gC to 180 nmolP/gC. The results of high throughput 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing showed that microorganisms such as Clostridia and Nitrospira were markedly decreased due to high frequency ultrasound. The method used in this study caused the inhibition of certain carbon-attached microbials resulting in a negative effect on the removal rate of ammonia-N during the initial stage of the long-term reuse operation. The removal of UV254 and atrazine were restored from 8.1% and 55% to 21% and 76%, respectively.

Ultrasonically synthesis of Mn- and Cu- @ ZnS-NPs-AC based ultrasound assisted extraction procedure and validation of a spectrophotometric method for a rapid preconcentration of Allura Red AC (E129) in food and water samples

This study is devoted on Allura Red as food colorant preconcentration and determination in beverage, fruit juice and drink water samples is based on usage of Mn- and Cu- @ ZnS-NPs-AC as new sorbent for ultrasound-assisted-dispersive solid-phase microextraction (UA-DSPME) combined with ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometric based method (UV-Vis). Contribution of volume of eluent, pH, sorbent mass and sonication time on response following conduction of 28 experiments were optimized and investigated while their significantly justified according to p-value. Values of "Prob > F" less than 0.0500 is proportional with their significant influence on recovery of analyte. Under the optimum conditions 0.14 mL of THF; pH of 2.5; 8 mg of sorbent and 3 min sonication time guide and help achievement of limit of quantification (LOQ) and limit of detection (LOD) of 6.08 and 20.26 ng mL^-1, respectively. The accuracy of method was validated according to calculation of recovery following spiking 400 and 600 ng mL^-1 to blank solution and recovery as more reliable indication of accuracy 93.41 and 102.17% recoveries with RSD < 3.5%, which demonstrate the successful applicability of present method for real sample analysis. The maximum sorbent capacity was 50.0 mg g^-1 based on Langmuir isotherm as best model with high correlation coefficient. Combination of UA-DSPME and UV-Vis lead to higher sensitivity and lower cost for accurate and repeatable monitoring of Allura Red level in beverage, fruit juice and drink water samples with acceptable recovery and reasonable RSD%.

Ultrasound-accelerated synthesis of gold nanoparticles modified choline chloride functionalized graphene oxide as a novel sensitive bioelectrochemical sensor: Optimized meloxicam detection using CCD-RSM design and application for human plasma sample

In this research, gold nanoparticles modified choline chloride functionalized graphene oxide (AuNPs-ChCl-GO) was synthesized through the assistance of ultrasound and fabricated as a novel bioelectrochemical sensor and utilized for the sensitive detection of meloxicam (MEL). The morphological and structural features of the AuNPs-ChCl-GO were characterized using different techniques including FTIR, TEM, FE-SEM, EDX, and XRD. The modified electrode showed a remarkable improvement in the anodic oxidation activity of MEL due to the enhancement in the current response compared to the bare carbon paste electrode (CPE). The biosensor composition and measurement conditions were optimized using an experimental design. The differential pulse voltammetry (DPVs) exhibited expanded linear dynamic in the range of 9.0 × 10^-9 to 8.5 × 10^-7 M for MEL in Britton-Robinson buffer at pH = 4.0 with a detection limit of 1.008 × 10^-9 M. The practical utility of the modified electrode was demonstrated by the accurate detection of MEL in human plasma sample.
