Abstract
Human papillomavirus (HPV), a common cause of sexually transmitted diseases, may cause warts and lead to various types of cancers, which makes it important to understand the risk factors associated with it. HPV is the leading risk factor and plays a crucial role in the progression of cervical cancer. Viral oncoproteins E6 and E7 play a pivotal role in this process. Beyond cervical cancer, HPV-associated cancers of the mouth and throat are also increasing. HPV can also contribute to other malignancies like penile, vulvar, and vaginal cancers. Emerging evidence links HPV to these cancers. Research on the oncogenic effect of HPV is still ongoing and explorations of screening techniques, vaccination, immunotherapy and targeted therapeutics are all in progress. The present review offers valuable insight into the current understanding of the role of HPV in cancer and its potential implications for treatment and prevention in the future.

Abstract
Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common cause of sexually transmitted diseases and causes a wide range of pathologies including cervical carcinoma. Integration of the HR-HPV DNA into the host genome plays a crucial role in cervical carcinoma. An alteration of the pRb pathways by the E7 proteins is one of the mechanisms that's account for the transforming capacity of high-risk papillomavirus. For the proper understanding of the underline mechanism of the progression of the disease, the present study investigate the correlation of concentration of host pRb protein, viral E7 oncoprotein and viral load in early and advanced stages of cervical carcinoma. It was found that the viral load in early stages (stage I and II) was less (log10 transformed mean value 2.6 and 3.0) compared to advanced stages (stage III and IV) (Log10 transformed value 5.0 and 5.8) having high expression of HPV E7 onco-protein and reduced level of pRb protein, signifying the role of viral load and expression level of E7 oncoprotein in the progression of cervical cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Except for a few preventative Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines, there is currently no cure for HPV infection. There are a number of cutting-edge strategies and potent medications or herbal formulations that can be applied topically for early clearance of HPV infection before HPV DNA gets integrated into host cell genome. This is facilitated due to cervical cancer having distinct and well-recognized long precancerous stages. OBJECTIVES This review aims to outline every possible medication and formulation, both natural and synthetic, that can be applied topically as intravaginal application to help remove HPV infection at an early precancerous stage. RESULTS Several anti-HPV/HPV clearance compounds and formulations for high-grade lesions are undergoing clinical trials. However, the majority of compounds are still in the early stages of development and require additional research to become viable HPV clearance candidates. Synthetic drugs may be more promising because they may have a more targeted effect; however, they may also have significant adverse effects. On the other hand, natural medications are safer to use. They are less specific, but have minimal to no adverse effects. CONCLUSIONS This article may serve as a valuable resource of information for managing and preventing precancerous carcinogenic HPV infections. Research could be directed toward developing candidate drugs to make evidence-based decisions about advancing them to clinical trials and, eventually, to the market for potential use in the prevention and control of cervical cancer, which is almost always preventable or even curable if detected early.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to evaluate the expression pattern of complement regulatory proteins (CRPs) CD46, CD59, and CD55 in HPV-positive (HPV+) & negative (HPV-) cervical cancer cell lines in search of a reliable differential biomarker. STUDY DESIGN We analysed the expression of CRPs in HPV 16-positive SiHa cell line, HPV 18-positive HeLa cell line, and HPV-negative cell line C33a using RT-qPCR, Western blotting, flow cytometry, and confocal microscopy. RESULTS We observed a differential expression profile of CRPs in HPV+ and HPV- cervical cancer cell lines. The mRNA level of CD59 & CD55 showed a higher expression pattern in HPV+ cells when compared to HPV- cancer cells. However, flow cytometry-based experiments revealed that CD46 was preferentially expressed more in HPV 16-positive SiHa cells followed by HPV 18-positive HeLa cells when compared to HPV- C33a cells. Interestingly, confocal microscopy revealed a high level of CD59 expression in Hela cells and SiHa cells but low expression in HPV- C33a cells. In addition, HPV 18-positive HeLa cells expressed more CD55, which was lower in SiHa cells and very weak in C33a cells. CONCLUSION The study demonstrates the differential expression of CRPs in both HPV+ and HPV- cervical cancer cells for the first time, and their potential to serve as an early diagnostic marker for cervical carcinogenesis.

Abstract
Background The efficacy of therapy in cervical cancer (CESC) is blocked by high molecular heterogeneity. Thus, the sub-molecular characterization remains primarily explored for personalizing the treatment of CESC patients. Methods Datasets with 741 CESC patients were obtained from TCGA and GEO databases. The NMF algorithm, random forest algorithm, and multivariate Cox analysis were utilized to construct a classifier for defining the sub-molecular characterization. Then, the biological characteristics, genomic variations, prognosis, and immune landscape in molecular subtypes were explored. The significance of classifier genes was validated by quantitative Real-Time PCR, cell transfection, cell colony formation assay, wound healing assay, cell proliferation assay, and Western blot. Results The CESC patients were classified into two subtypes, and the high classifier-score patients with significant differences in ECM-receptor interaction, PI3K-Akt signaling pathway, and MAPK signaling pathway showed a poorer prognosis in OS (p < 0.001), DFI (p = 0.016), PFI (p < 0.001) and DSS (p < 0.001), and with high the M0 Macrophage and resting Mast cells infiltration and low HLA family gene expression. Moreover, the constructed classifier owns a high identified accuracy in the tumor/normal groups (AUC: 0.993), the tumor/CIN1-CIN3 groups (AUC: 0.963), and normal/CIN1-CIN3 groups (AUC: 0.962), and the total prediction performance is better than currently published signatures in CESC (C-index: 0,763). The combined prediction performance further indicated that Nomogram (AUC = 0.837) is superior to the classifier (AUC = 0.835) and Stage (AUC = 0.568), and the C-index of calibration curves is 0.784. The potential biological function of classifier genes indicated that silencing GALNT2 inhibited the cancer cell's proliferation, migration, and colony formation; Conversely, the cancer cell's proliferation, migration, and colony formation were increased after the upregulation of GALNT2. The Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition Experiment showed that GALNT2 knockdown might reduce the levels of Snail and Vimentin proteins and increase E-cadherin; Conversely, the levels of Snail and Vimentin proteins were increased, E-cadherin was reduced by GALNT2 upregulation. Conclusion The classifier we constructed may help improve our understanding of subtype characteristics and provide a new strategy for developing CESC therapeutics. Remarkably, GALNT2 may be an option to directly target drivers in CESC cancer therapy.

Abstract
The persistent infection of high-risk Human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) induced cervical cancer remains a challenge in women worldwide including India. Recent advances in cancer research have paved the way for advanced cancer treatment modalities including immunotherapy by manipulating the function or number of cytotoxic T cells. It is well established that anaphylatoxins like C3a and C5a of complement system influence tumor growth by evading apoptosis leading to progression of cancer. The role of the complement system, particularly the complement regulatory proteins (CRPs) which are important determinants of immune response play a crucial role in carcinogenesis. In a tumor microenvironment (TME) assisted suppression of immune effector cells may be achieved through CRPs. However, recent advances in pharmacogenomics including drug designing and combination of these approaches have provided a holistic understanding of signaling pathways and their crosstalk, to regulate cellular communications.This review describes the role of complement system; particularly CRPs in HPV induced cervical carcinogenesis which may be used for designing anti- HPV or cervical cancer therapeutics.

Abstract
Introduction India accounts for one-fifth of the global burden of cervical cancer cases and mortality. A safe and effective vaccine to prevent human papillomavirus (HPV) infections, the primary cause of cervical malignancies, is available in India but multiple barriers lead to its low uptake in the country. Physicians are a key stakeholder and communicator in the Indian health system and have the potential to increase HPV vaccine uptake. Objective We undertook formative research to understand awareness, perceptions and choices of physicians when recommending the HPV vaccine to parents of adolescent girls. Methods We conducted in-depth interviews with 32 physicians in two districts of West Bengal. Data collection was carried out between July and August 2019. The data was transcribed, coded, and analyzed using NVivo software using the thematic analysis technique. Results Our findings suggest that while physicians are generally aware about the burden of cervical cancer and its prevention by HPV vaccination, they face several barriers to recommending the HPV vaccine routinely and strongly. These include the lack of national-level guidance on the age eligibility and dosage, lack of practice-level opportunities such as well or non-sick visits and other routine adolescent vaccines, practice-level barriers like out-of-pocket cost and vaccine availability, and perceived parental hesitancy arising from reluctance to discuss cervical cancer, its prevention, and HPV vaccination. Conclusions Physicians in our study exhibited hesitancy when recommending the HPV vaccine. They also faced logistical barriers. It is important that the barriers pertaining to when and how physicians recommend the vaccine be tackled through further education, policy change, and development and implementation of interventions that are evidenced-based.

Abstract
Background Human papillomavirus-positive (HPV+) cervical cancers are highly heterogeneous in clinical and molecular characteristics. Thus, an investigation into their heterogeneous immunological profiles is meaningful in providing both biological and clinical insights into this disease. Methods Based on the enrichment of 29 immune signatures, we discovered immune subtypes of HPV+ cervical cancers by hierarchical clustering. To explore whether this subtyping method is reproducible, we analyzed three bulk and one single cell transcriptomic datasets. We also compared clinical and molecular characteristics between the immune subtypes. Results Clustering analysis identified two immune subtypes of HPV+ cervical cancers: Immunity-H and Immunity-L, consistent in the four datasets. In comparisons with Immunity-L, Immunity-H displayed stronger immunity, more stromal contents, lower tumor purity, proliferation potential, intratumor heterogeneity and stemness, higher tumor mutation burden, more neoantigens, lower levels of copy number alterations, lower DNA repair activity, as well as better overall survival prognosis. Certain genes, such as MUC17, PCLO, and GOLGB1, showed significantly higher mutation rates in Immunity-L than in Immunity-H. 16 proteins were significantly upregulated in Immunity-H vs. Immunity-L, including Caspase-7, PREX1, Lck, C-Raf, PI3K-p85, Syk, 14-3-3_epsilon, STAT5-α, GATA3, Src_pY416, NDRG1_pT346, Notch1, PDK1_pS241, Bim, NF-kB-p65_pS536, and p53. Pathway analysis identified numerous immune-related pathways more highly enriched in Immunity-H vs. Immunity-L, including cytokine-cytokine receptor interaction, natural killer cell-mediated cytotoxicity, antigen processing and presentation, T/B cell receptor signaling, chemokine signaling, supporting the stronger antitumor immunity in Immunity-H vs. Immunity-L. Conclusion HPV+ cervical cancers are divided into two subgroups based on their immune signatures' enrichment. Both subgroups have markedly different tumor immunity, progression phenotypes, genomic features, and clinical outcomes. Our data offer novel perception in the tumor biology as well as clinical implications for HPV+ cervical cancer.

Knowledge, attitudes, and practices among Indonesian urban communities regarding HPV infection, cervical cancer, and HPV vaccination. PLoS One 2022; 17:e0266139. Abstract
Background Few studies explored Indonesian understanding of cervical cancer (CC) and the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination. We aimed to investigate the association between knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) and socio-demographical influences related to HPV, CC, and vaccination among Indonesian urban citizens. Methods We conducted an online survey during March 2020-August 2021 using the Snowball sampling technique. The socio-demographic characteristic and KAP responses were collected via Google Forms from 400 respondents in Jakarta. The knowledge and attitudes were divided into HPV and CC (aspect 1) and HPV vaccination (aspect 2). Correlation between KAP scores was performed using Spearman’s test, and multiple logistic regression analyses were conducted to determine KAP predictors. Results Indonesian urban citizens in Jakarta were found to have poor knowledge in individual aspects of the inquiry but moderate knowledge overall, good attitude in inquiry both in each aspect and overall, and unsatisfying practices. Overall, in the general population, men, and women respectively: 50.8%, 32.4%, and 53.6% had good knowledge; 82.0%, 75.2%, and 84.4% expressed positive attitude; and 30.3%, 15.2%, and 35.6% applied favorable practice regarding questions inquired. Knowledge was weakly correlated towards attitude (ρ = 0.385) but moderately correlated with practice (ρ = 0.485); attitude was moderately correlated with practice (ρ = 0.577), all results: p<0.001. Significant odds ratio (OR) for predictors to good knowledge were female sex (OR = 2.99), higher education (OR = 2.91), and higher mother’s education (OR = 2.15). Factors related to positive attitudes were higher mother’s education (OR = 4.13), younger age (OR = 1.86), and better results in the knowledge inquiries (OR = 2.96). Factors that suggested better practices were female sex (OR = 2.33), being employed (OR = 1.68), excellent knowledge scores (OR = 4.56), and positive attitudes expressions (OR = 8.05). Having done one vaccination dose and intention to receive vaccines were significantly influenced by good KAP. Conclusions KAP had inter-association to successful CC and HPV prevention programs, and socio-demographical characteristics are critical to influencing better KAP.

Abstract
Background Human papillomavirus-positive (HPV+) cervical cancers are highly heterogeneous in molecular and clinical features. However, the molecular classification of HPV+ cervical cancers remains insufficiently unexplored. Methods Based on the expression profiles of 50 genes having the largest expression variations across the HPV+ cervical cancers in the TCGA-CESC dataset, we hierarchically clustered HPV+ cervical cancers to identify new subtypes. We further characterized molecular, phenotypic, and clinical features of these subtypes. Results We identified two subtypes of HPV+ cervical cancers, namely HPV+G1 and HPV+G2. We demonstrated that this classification method was reproducible in two validation sets. Compared to HPV+G2, HPV+G1 displayed significantly higher immune infiltration level and stromal content, lower tumor purity, lower stemness scores and intratumor heterogeneity (ITH) scores, higher level of genomic instability, lower DNA methylation level, as well as better disease-free survival prognosis. The multivariate survival analysis suggests that the disease-free survival difference between both subtypes is independent of confounding variables, such as immune signature, stemness, and ITH. Pathway and gene ontology analysis confirmed the more active tumor immune microenvironment in HPV+G1 versus HPV+G2. Conclusions HPV+ cervical cancers can be classified into two subtypes based on the expression profiles of the 50 genes with the largest expression variations across the HPV+ cervical cancers. Both subtypes have significantly different molecular, phenotypic, and clinical features. This new subtyping method captures the comprehensive heterogeneity in molecular and clinical characteristics of HPV+ cervical cancers and provides potential clinical implications for the diagnosis and treatment of this disease.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Cervical cancer is the second most common gynecological cancer in Bangladesh. Lack of awareness of screening methods, risk factors, and symptoms may lead to presenting most cervical cancers at an advanced stage. We investigated knowledge and awareness of cervical cancer (CCa) among females at the Sheikh Hasina Medical College (SHMC) of Tangail district in Bangladesh. METHODS A cross sectional survey was conducted to collect data via a structured questionnaire from SHMC during the period of February 2019 to January 2020. Data on socio-demographic characteristics and knowledge of cervical cancer were collected. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to identify factors associated with having heard and knowledge of cervical cancer. A p-value <0.05 was considered significant. RESULT Of all the interviews conducted, only 45.2% (493/1090) had heard of cervical cancer as a disease. Women were more likely to be aware of CCa if they were lived in urban areas, had higher education (university level education) and belong to high income families. The study revealed evidence of significant association between marital, literacy, residence and socio-economic status with women's knowledge on cervical cancer (p< 0.05). CONCLUSION This study serves to highlight that there was impoverished knowledge about cervical cancer among Bangladeshi women. Hence, this indicates the government should take proper steps to raise awareness and knowledge levels via educational programs and health counseling.

Abstract
Background: Prostate cancer is one of the most frequent cancers in men, with several risk factors, including infection. In this study, we aimed to assess the association of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection with prostate cancer risk and aggressiveness. Methods: This case-control study was performed on a total of 70 archival formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) prostatic tissue blocks. Among them, 35 histopathologically confirmed prostate cancer tissues and 35 benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) samples were enrolled as cases and controls, respectively. The specimens were examined by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and in situ hybridization for the detection of HPV DNA of both low-risk (6, 11) and high-risk (16, 18) types. Results: The primary results of PCR for the L1 region revealed HPV infection in 34.3% and 8.6% of the cases and controls, respectively (P = 0.018). The HPV typing using hybridization revealed a significant difference between the two groups in terms of infection with HPV types 16 and 18 (P = 0.003, P = 0.028, respectively). The findings showed no significant association of HPV infection with age and prostate specific antigen (PSA) level of the patients. In addition, no significant association was found between infection with HPV and Gleason score (GS). Conclusions: Our findings indicated that HPV infection, especially with high-risk types 16 and 18, has a significant association with prostatic carcinogenesis. In addition, although patients with GS = 7 showed higher rates of infection with HPV, we did not observe any statistical association between HPV infection and GS.

Abstract
Cervical cancer is one of the most common and important gynecological cancers, which has a global concern with an increasing number of patients and mortality rates. Today, most women in the world who suffer from cervical cancer are developing advanced stages of the disease. Smoking and even exposure to secondhand smoke, infections caused by the human papillomavirus, immune system dysfunction and high-risk individual-social behaviors are among the most important predisposing factors for this type of cancer. In addition, papilloma virus infection plays a more prominent role in cervical cancer. Surgery, chemotherapy or radical hysterectomy, and radiotherapy are effective treatments for this condition, the side effects of these methods endanger a person's quality of life and cause other problems in other parts of the body. Studies show that herbal medicines, including taxol, camptothecin and combretastatins, have been shown to be effective in treating cervical cancer. Ginger (Zingiber officinale, Zingiberaceae) is one of the plants with valuable compounds such as gingerols, paradols and shogoals, which is a rich source of antioxidants, anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory agents. Numerous studies have reported the therapeutic effects of this plant through various pathways in cervical cancer. In this article, we look at the signaling mechanisms and pathways in which ginger is used to treat cervical cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nurses and midwives play important roles in educating the public on cervical cancer prevention strategies. AIM This study sought to assess nurses' and midwives' knowledge of, attitudes towards, and acceptance of human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination in relation to their background characteristics. METHODS A descriptive cross-sectional study using questionnaires was conducted with a convenience sample of 318 female nurses and midwives, ages 20 to 59, at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Ghana. The data were summarised using frequencies, percentages, chi-square tests, and Fisher's exact tests. RESULTS The results indicated that 41.5% (n = 132) of the participants had high levels of knowledge about cervical cancer risk factors, and 17.6% (n = 56) of the respondents had received at least one dose of the HPV vaccine. Reasons for receiving the HPV vaccination included advice from a colleague (12.9%, n = 41) and perceived threat of cervical cancer (11.7%, n = 37). Of the 262 respondents who had not been vaccinated, 24.45% (n = 78) strongly agreed and 28.0% (n = 89) agreed with the statement that there was limited information on HPV vaccination. Also, there were statistically significant associations between age (X2 = 23.746, p = 0.001), marital status (X2 = 14.758, p = 0.005), completed level of education (X2 = 21.692, p = 0.001), and duration of working at the hospital (X2 = 8.424, p = 0.038) and acceptance of HPV vaccination. CONCLUSIONS This study demonstrated gaps in knowledge about cervical cancer risk factors and attitudes towards HPV vaccination, indicating the need for targeted measures to improve knowledge and attitudes. Also, measures to increase acceptance of HPV vaccination among nurses and midwives should consider their sociodemographic characteristics.

<p>Cervical cancer is the sequel of a multi-factorial, long-term unresolved disease that includes genetic, epigenetic, and viral components responsible for its development and progression. It is the second most common cancer of females in India. Human papillomavirus (HPV) is considered the primary causative agent of pre-neoplastic and cancerous lesions and 90% of all cervical carcinomas are linked to high-risk HPV type 16 and type 18. Although most HR-HPV infections are asymptomatic, transient, and self-limiting, the persistent infection with a high risk (HR-HPV) may cause precancerous lesions that can progress to cervical cancer. HPV type 16 is the most common HPV in India associated with more than 75% of cervical cancer, followed by HPV type 18 and other high-risk types. Infection with HPV alone is not sufficient for the development of cervical cancer but there is the involvement of some host genetic factors also that are responsible for the development and progression of cervical cancer. This article briefly reviews molecular pathogenesis, viral load, and the interaction of HPV oncoprotein E6 and E7 with host cellular markers in the progression of cervical cancer.</p>

Abstract
PURPOSE Cervical cancer (CC) is the most common cancer affecting women worldwide. Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is a major contributing factor for the development of CC. The development of CC occurs progressively from precancer stages to cancerous stages (ie, invasive squamous cell carcinoma [ISCC] and adenocarcinoma [ADC]). ADC is a rare form of CC that develops from the mucinous endocervical epithelium. It is believed that the downstream targets of Notch signaling contribute to the etiology of CC. One such target is HES1, whose role in the modulation of ADC is unknown. The purpose of this study is to determine the role of HES1 protein in HPV-associated ADC subtype of CC and also to compare its expression in histologic subtypes of precancer and ISCC. PATIENTS AND METHODS A total of 148 patients (30 with precancers, 98 with ISCC, and 20 with ADC) and 40 normal control participants were analyzed for the expression of HES1 via immunohistochemistry, with results validated by immunoblotting. RESULTS The comparison between HPV-16 and HES1 expression was significant in precancer (cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grades 1 to 3; P = .013), ISCC (International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics stages I to IV; P = .001), and ADC ( P = .007). An overall significant mean difference was observed between HES1, JAG1, and Notch-3 proteins in precancer ( P = .001), ISCC ( P = .001), and ADC ( P = .001). Pairwise comparisons between HES1 and JAG1 and HES1 and Notch-3 were also found to be significant. CONCLUSION This study showed that among all HPV-16-positive precancers, the major HES1 positivity signal arises from cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grades 2 and 3 that develops into ISCC. Moreover, HPV-16-positive ADC also showed an association with HES1. The HES1, JAG1, and Notch-3 proteins showed their synergistic role in modulating HPV associated ADC along with histologic subtypes of precancer and ISCC of CC.

Abstract
Cervical cancer is one of the most common cancers among women in developing countries. Persistent infection with high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) is the major determinant for the development of cervical cancer. Role of newly discovered T helper 9 (Th9) cells in cervical cancer pathogenesis is yet unfolded. In this study, we observed a huge infiltration of PU.1+ cells and overrepresentation of IL-9R in tissue biopsy specimens of CIN patients in cervical cancer cases. Treatment with Th9 signatory cytokines, IL-9 and IL-21, suppressed proliferation, enhanced apoptosis and stimulated the expression of MHC I and e-cadherin on HeLa cell lines. Th9 thus seems enhance antitumor immune response through T cell cytotoxicity and play crucial role in a controlling malignant cell transformation. Therefore, this study helps in firmer understanding of relevance of Th9 in cervical cancer immunity.

Abstract
Adenocarcinoma (ADC) of the uterine cervix (UC) is a rare form of cervical cancer (CC) caused due to the infection of Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). Cyclin D1 is one of the downstream targets of aberrantly activated Notch signaling, contribute to the etiology of CC. However, little is known about the role of Cyclin D1 in the modulation of cervical ADC and is controversial. The purpose of this study is to determine the role of Cyclin D1 protein and to elucidate the combined analysis with Notch signaling proteins in HPV associated ADCs of CC. A total of 60 biopsy samples (40 normal and 20 ADCs of CC) were analyzed for the expression of Cyclin D1 in HPV associated ADCs via immunohistochemistry and by immunoblotting. HPV-16 positive ADC patients showed a strong association with the Cyclin D1 expression (p = 0.007). The significant mean difference (p = 0.0001) and the pairwise comparison between Cyclin D1/JAG1 (p = 0.0001), and Cyclin D1/Notch-3 (p = 0.0001) were observed. The above Notch signaling proteins showed their synergistic role in modulating Cyclin D1 which in-turn regulates HPV-16 associated ADC of the uterine cervix (UC), affecting women’s global health.

Abstract
Background: Carcinoma cervix of uterus (CaCx) is the most common malignancy affecting women worldwide. It is an established fact that infection of specific types of human papilloma virus (HPV) is essential for the development of cervical cancer. The present study reports the high-risk viruses (HPV 16 and 18) type distribution in rural central India, which has unique climatic condition. To our knowledge, no molecular study on HPV prevalence has been done in this region of rural population, this intended us do such study. Materials and Methods: Sexually active women reporting to the Gynecology were divided in three groups, first being asymptomatic women with normal cervix (52 cases), second group with benign cervical lesion (52 cases), and third group of women with frank cervical malignancy (40 cases). Cervical swabs were collected for HPV DNA sampling. The incidence of HPV positivity was recorded in each group. Results: Fifty-two women with asymptomatic normal cervix showed 44.23% positivity for HPV 16 and 5.76% positivity for HPV 18. Fifty-two women with benign cervical lesion showed 38.46% positivity for HPV 16 and 3.84% positivity for HPV 18. Forty women with frank cervical malignancy were with prevalence of 62.5% for HPV 16 and 22.5% for HPV 18. Conclusion: The results of the study are definitely helpful to know the prevalence of HPV in this region of rural population and will enrich the national epidemiological data related to HPV infection in cervical cancer.

Abstract
The majority of cervical cancer (CC) cases are attributable to HPV infection. Altered Notch pathway signals and HPV are believed to modify clinicopathogenesis of CC, however, the involvement of each molecular player and its mechanism is still not known. Jagged-1 (JAG1) is one of the ligands that induce Notch pathway. The involvement of JAG1 in the modulation of a disease condition is not very clear. Hence, this study aims to study the role of JAG1 in HPV-16/18 associated different histological sub-types of CC, especially ADC. 40 non-neoplastic cervical tissues, 30 precancer and 118 tumor specimens (total 188 tissue biopsies) were studied for the expression of the JAG1 protein through immunohistochemistry, immunoblotting and for HPV infection. Two folds increase of cytoplasmic (Mean ± S.E, 3.67 ± 0.33; p = 0.0001) and nuclear (3.70 ± 0.38, p = 0.0001) JAG1 expression was identified in normal (N) vs precancer and three folds cytoplasmic (4.44 ± 0.17, p = 0.0001) and nuclear (4.64 ± 0.17; p = 0.0001) in N vs. ISCC. Total 85% of ADC patients were found to be infected with HPV, which were 100% infected with HPV-16. These findings suggest the complex synergistic interplay between JAG1 and HPV in regulating clinicopathological progression of CC through its deregulation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We undertook the current study on cervical Human Papillomavirus (HPV) prevalence along with cytology in women visiting the Gynecology Out-patient Department of a hospital for common gynecological ailments, subsequent to our earlier population-based study on HPV prevalence from India. METHODS We analyzed data on cervical-cytology (Pap smears) and PCR-based molecular detection of HPV infection along with socio-demographic variables (N = 696). RESULTS We identified 36.84% HPV-positive women amongst whom, HPV16 and 18 together predominated (79.37%) over other HPV types (20.63%). Contrarily, only 6.4% women revealed abnormal cytological lesions, of which, 46.51% were HPV-positive and 95% of such women harbored HPV16/18, while 5% harbored other HPV types. Individuals with normal cytology portrayed 36.09% HPV infections, of which, 77.97% were HPV16/18-positive and 22.03% harbored other HPV types. Overall HPV prevalence decreased significantly (ptrend = 0.047) with increase in age, but HPV16/18 infections were significantly over-represented compared to the other HPV types across all age-groups. Specifically, HPV16 prevalence increased (p trend < 0.01) with increase in severity of cervical lesions. HPV16 prevalence did not differ between the Hindus and Muslims but HPV18 was significantly higher among the cytologically normal Muslim women (24.14%, p = 0.02), compared to the Hindus (11.91%), specifically among those ≥ 30 years of age. There was a significant (p < 0.05) overrepresentation of HPV16 prevalence among women who were users of oral contraceptive-pills, irrespective of cytology. CONCLUSIONS Our study highlights the need for HPV16/18-based screening of cervical cancers in India considering the immense socio-cultural and genetic diversity at the population level.

Abstract
Cervical cancer is the second most common gynecological cancer worldwide and remains one of the leading causes of cancer-associated mortality among women. S100A6 has been reported to be associated with the development of many types of cancer. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of S100A6 on the proliferation, apoptosis and migration of cervical cancer cells and its underlying molecular mechanisms. Quantative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) was used to detect the basic mRNA level of S100A6 in HeLa, SiHa and CaSki cells. Western blot analysis was used to detect the protein level of S100A6, epithelial cadherin, neuronal cadherin, phosphorylated protein kinase B (p-Akt), t-Akt, p-glycogen synthase kinase 3β (GSK3β), t-GSK3β and β-catenin. Semi-qPCR was used to detect the mRNA level of Snail, Twist and Vimentin. MTT and Hoechst staining assays were used to detect the proliferation and apoptosis of cells, and wound healing and Transwell assays were used to detect the migration of cells. The results of the present study demonstrate that the levels of S100A6 were decreased in HeLa cells compared with in SiHa and CaSki cells. Overexpression of S100A6 in HeLa and CaSki cells promoted the proliferative and migratory ability, and had no significant effect on cellular apoptosis. Whereas the knockdown of S100A6 in SiHa and CaSki cells inhibited the proliferative and migratory ability, it had no significant effect on apoptosis. The overexpression of S100A6 in HeLa cells increased the levels of neuronal (N)-cadherin, vimentin, Snail and Twist. Conversely, knockdown of S100A6 in SiHa cells decreased the levels of N-cadherin, vimentin, Snail and Twist and increased the levels of epithelial (E)-cadherin. Furthermore, overexpression of S100A6 in HeLa cells activated the phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K)/protein kinase B (Akt) signaling pathway, and treatment with the PI3K inhibitor LY294002 partially repressed S100A6-enhanced proliferation and migration of cervical cancer cells. These results indicate that S100A6 facilitates the malignant potential of cervical cancer cells, particularly metastatic ability and epithelial-mesenchymal transition, which is mediated by activating the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway.

Abstract
Aim: In this study, we focused on the p53 codon 72 polymorphism and HPV infections as a possible contributing factor in susceptibility to prostate cancer (PCa). Methods: Eighty histopathologically confirmed prostate biopsies comprising of 40 cancer cases and 40 benign prostate hyperplasia cases were used. Results: A significant difference was not observed between HPV presence and PCa progression. Our results showed that the p53 protein with Arg (p53-Arg72) variant contributes to the development of PCa. Conclusion: There is a near-significant association between Arg/Arg polymorphism and PCa.

Abstract
Cervical cancer is the most common cancer found in Indian women. Two human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines were approved for use in India in 2006; however, neither has become readily accepted. Physician attitudes and recommendations are crucial in the uptake of HPV vaccines among adolescent women in the USA; thus, we ought to investigate provider attitudes and practices related to HPV vaccination in India via a survey administered to 210 Indian physicians. Of the 210 physicians, 46 % were community physicians and 54 % were academic physicians. The correct response to HPV knowledge questions was identified around 50 % of the time in 6/11 questions. Only 47 % of the physicians knew that there was an HPV vaccine approved for use in India. Only 11 % and 15 % of physicians strongly agree that the HPV vaccine will lead to long-lasting immunity and has a safe side effect profile, respectively. A total of 30 % of those surveyed reported that they would recommend the HPV vaccine to their patients, while 73 % agreed that the cost of the HPV vaccine is a major barrier to acceptance. After multivariate analysis, there were two significant variables independently associated with a physician's decision to recommend HPV vaccine. These variables were as follows: "whether the vaccine was freely available from the government sector" and "uncertainty about whether HPV must be persistent to cause cervical cancer vs not." Given the lack of knowledge among practicing physicians in Mangalore, increasing the education about HPV infection and HPV vaccination towards health care providers has the potential to increase vaccine recommendations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Infection of specific high risk Human papillomaviruses (HPVs) is known to cause cervical cancer and two prophylactic vaccines have been developed against two major high risk HPV types 16 and 18 for prevention of cervical cancer. Because of societal, religious and ethical issues associated with the vaccination of adolescent girls in India together with lack of awareness about HPV and HPV vaccines, no successful HPV immunization program has been employed in India. OBJECTIVE To determine knowledge, awareness and attitude of college students on HPV, HPV vaccine and cervical cancer. METHOD A questionnaire-based survey was conducted in a total of 1580 undergraduate students between the age group 16-26 years comprising 684 girls and 876 boys. RESULTS Out of a total of 1580 students, girls had more knowledge about cervical cancer (82.45%, p<0.001), HPV (45.61%, p<0.001) and HPV vaccines (44%, p<0.001) when compared to those in boys. However, knowledge about the types of HPV and vaccines was poor. Interestingly, students from biology-major had more knowledge and awareness about cervical cancer (81.89%, p<0.001) and HPV (46.58%, <0.001) when compared to non-biology students. Girls from both biology and non-biology group had higher awareness compared to boys. Analysis of odds ratio (ORs) along with 95% CI showed older girls with 1.2 to 3 fold (p<0.05) higher knowledge than boys. All students agreed that girls should get vaccinated against HPV (p<0.001). CONCLUSION It is suggested that there is a need for educational intervention and awareness campaigns to augment HPV immunization program for control of cervical cancer in India.

Abstract
Human papilloma virus (HPV) expressing E6 and E7 oncoproteins, is known to inactivate the tumor suppressor p53 through proteasomal degradation in cervical cancers. Therefore, use of small molecules for inhibition of proteasome function and induction of p53 reactivation is a promising strategy for induction of apoptosis in cervical cancer cells. The polyphenolic alkanone, 6-Gingerol (6G), present in the pungent extracts of ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe) has shown potent anti-tumorigenic and pro-apoptotic activities against a variety of cancers. In this study we explored the molecular mechanism of action of 6G in human cervical cancer cells in vitro and in vivo. 6G potently inhibited proliferation of the HPV positive cervical cancer cells. 6G was found to: (i) inhibit the chymotrypsin activity of proteasomes, (ii) induce reactivation of p53, (iii) increase levels of p21, (iv) induce DNA damage and G2/M cell cycle arrest, (v) alter expression levels of p53-associated apoptotic markers like, cleaved caspase-3 and PARP, and (vi) potentiate the cytotoxicity of cisplatin. 6G treatment induced significant reduction of tumor volume, tumor weight, proteasome inhibition and p53 accumulation in HeLa xenograft tumor cells in vivo. The 6G treatment was devoid of toxic effects as it did not affect body weights, hematological and osteogenic parameters. Taken together, our data underscores the therapeutic and chemosensitizing effects of 6G in the management and treatment of cervical cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND High risk human papilloma virus (HPV) types 16 and 18 have been proven as central causes of cervical cancer and safety and immunogenicity of HPV vaccines are sufficiently established. Knowledge and practices of HPV vaccination among medical and paramedical students is vital as these may strongly determine intention to recommend vaccination to others in the future. The present study was therefore undertaken to assess the knowledge, attitude and practices regarding cervical cancer screening and HPV vaccination among medical and paramedical students and to analyze factors influencing them. MATERIALS AND METHODS The present cross sectional study, conducted in a tertiary care teaching hospital in south India, included undergraduate students aged 18 years and above, belonging to medical, dental and nursing streams, after informed written consent. RESULTS Out of 957 participants, only 430 (44.9%) displayed good knowledge and only 65 (6.8%) had received HPV vaccination. Among the unvaccinated, 433 (48.54%), were not willing to take the vaccine. Concerns regarding the efficacy (30.5%), safety (26.1%) and cost of the vaccine (21.7%) were responsible for this. Age, gender, family history of malignancy and mother's education had no influence on knowledge. Compared to medical students, nursing students had better knowledge (OR-1.49, 95% CI 0.96 to 2.3, p = 0.072) and students of dentistry had poor knowledge (OR-0.50 95% CI 0.36 to 0.70, p <0.001). CONCLUSIONS The knowledge and uptake of HPV vaccination among medical and paramedical students in India is poor. Targeted health education interventions may have huge positive impact not only on the acceptance of vaccination among them, but also on their intention to recommend the vaccine in future.

Abstract
Etiological role of viral proteins E6 and E7 of high-risk HPV in cervical carcinogenesis is well established. However, their contribution in chemoresistance and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) that leads to advanced metastatic lesions and chemoresistance is poorly defined. In the present study, contribution of viral oncoproteins in acquisition of EMT character during onset of chemoresistance was assessed. A chemoresistant cell line (SiHaCR) was developed from an established HPV16-positive cervical cancer cell line, SiHa, by escalating selection pressure of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU). Expression of Survivin, ABCG2, Snail, Slug, Twist, and Vimentin was examined in SiHa and SiHaCR cells by reverse transcriptase-PCR (RT-PCR) and immunoblotting assays. Mesenchymal phenotype in SiHaCR cells was confirmed by assessment of migration and invasion potentials. SiHaCR cells displayed elevated level of functional and molecular markers associated with chemoresistance (Survivin, ABCG2) and EMT (Snail, Slug, Twist, Vimentin) and reduced E-cadherin. SiHaCR also showed increased levels of HPV16 E6 and E7 transcripts. Specific silencing of HPV16 E6, but not E7 using corresponding siRNA, demonstrated a differential involvement of HPV oncogenes in manifestation of EMT. HPV16 E6 silencing resulted in reduction of Slug and Twist expression. However, the expression of Snail and Vimentin was only marginally affected. In contrast, there was an increase in the expression of E-cadherin. A reduced migration and invasion capabilities were observed only in E6-silenced SiHaCR cells, which further confirmed functional contribution of HPV16 E6 in manifestation of EMT. Taken together, our study demonstrated an active involvement of HPV16 E6 in regulation of EMT, which promotes chemoresistance in cervical cancer.

Abstract
PURPOSE Perturbation of keratinocyte differentiation by E6/E7 oncoproteins of high-risk human papillomaviruses that drive oncogenic transformation of cells in squamocolumnar junction of the uterine cervix may confer "stem-cell like" characteristics. However, the crosstalk between E6/E7 and stem cell signaling during cervical carcinogenesis is not well understood. We therefore examined the role of viral oncoproteins in stem cell signaling and maintenance of stemness in cervical cancer. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN Isolation and enrichment of cervical cancer stem-like cells (CaCxSLCs) was done from cervical primary tumors and cancer cell lines by novel sequential gating using a set of functional and phenotypic markers (ABCG2, CD49f, CD71, CD133) in defined conditioned media for assessing sphere formation and expression of self-renewal and stemness markers by FACS, confocal microscopy, and qRT-PCR. Differential expression level and DNA-binding activity of Notch1 and its downstream targets in CaCxSLCs as well as silencing of HPVE6/Hes1 by siRNA was evaluated by gel retardation assay, FACS, immunoblotting, and qRT-PCR followed by in silico and in vivo xenograft analysis. RESULTS CaCxSLCs showed spheroid-forming ability, expressed self-renewal and stemness markers Oct4, Sox2, Nanog, Lrig1, and CD133, and selectively overexpressed E6 and HES1 transcripts in both cervical primary tumors and cancer cell lines. The enriched CaCxSLCs were highly tumorigenic and did recapitulate primary tumor histology in nude mice. siRNA silencing of HPVE6 or Hes1 abolished sphere formation, downregulated AP-1-STAT3 signaling, and induced redifferentiation. Abstract
Aim: Notch1 expression remains incompatible and contradictory with previous findings on cervical cancer. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the association between Notch1 and cervical cancer. Methods: Available studies were searched from diverse databases and Review Managers 5.3 software was used to perform analysis. Results: A total of 798 samples were included in this meta-analysis. The Notch1 expression in cancer tissues was higher than that in precancer (p = 0.0003) and normal tissues (p < 0.02). However, the difference of Notch1 expression between cancer cases and precancer cases has no statistical significance (p = 0.35). Moreover, lymph node metastasis (p = 0.02) was associated with higher Notch1 expression in cervical cancer. Conclusion: Notch1 over-expression indicated aggressive biological behaviors.

Abstract
Background: Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) accounts for 90% of all primary oral malignancies. Association between human papillomavirus (HPV) as a risk factor of cervical cancer is well known; there is a need to widen the knowledge for its role in oral cancer development. The viral E6 protein of HPV binds to p53 making it nonfunctional. Aims and Objective: To study mutated/wild type p53 expression using immunohistochemistry and detect HPV-16 presence using polymerase chain reaction (PCR), in OSCC and correlating their expression. Materials and Methods: Immunohistochemical staining for p53 molecule in 24 sections of OSCC followed by DNA extraction of the cases using qiagen extraction kit and subsequent HPV-16 detection using PCR technique. Statistical Analysis: The data were analysed using SPSS software version 19. Results: Out of 24 cases of OSCC, twenty cases were positive for P 53 expression and four cases were negative for P 53 expression. Out of the four negative cases, one case was detected positive for HPV-16. Conclusion: HPV infection along with p53 expression helps in understanding its exact pathogenesis which further helps in expanding our spectrum of therapeutic modalities

Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite high prevalence of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and cervical cancer in Indian women, no study has been done in tribal populations whose socio-sexual lifestyle is different. Therefore, HPV screening has been carried out in pre-adolescent, adolescent and young adult tribal girls using self-collected urine samples. METHODS 20-35 ml self-collected midstream urine samples were obtained from a total of 2278 healthy tribal girls (9-25 years) comprising pre-adolescent, adolescent and young adults from three Indian states: Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh. β-globin positive 2034 samples were employed for HPV detection and genotyping. RESULTS The overall prevalence of HPV infection in tribal girls was 12.9% (262/2034). More than 65% (172/262) of them were infected with HR-HPV types of which HPV16 was the most predominant type (54%). Young adult girls aged 18-25 years showed a significantly higher prevalence of HPV infection (19.2%; OR = 3.36; 95% CI 2.97-6.34, P<0.001) as compared to that in adolescent (11.4%; OR = 1.82; 95% CI 1.20-2.76, P<0.01) or pre-adolescent girls (6.6%). CONCLUSION This is a first study showing significantly a very high prevalence of HPV infection in adolescent and young adult tribal girls possibly due to different socio-sexual behavior, indicating a serious health concern for Indian tribal women.

Abstract
Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer with sexual history as a consistent risk factor. This is the pioneering study that evaluates the frequency of HPV infection in prostate cancer in India. Ninety five (95) histopathologically confirmed cancer and fifty five (55) BPH from Indian population were analyzed for HPV infection using a pair of consensus sequence primer followed by type specific PCRs for both high-risk and low-risk HPV types. The data demonstrate HPV infection in 41% of prostate tumor biopsies and 20% in BPH. Subsequent PCR- based HPV typing using type - specific primers revealed 32% were infected with HPV type 16 whereas 6% were found to be positive for HPV type 18, while in BPH controls only 5% of the BPH controls were infected with HPV 16 and this difference was highly significant (p = 0.0004). Significant proportion of HPV infected (74%) cases belonged to stage III and IV (p < 0.001) with a high Gleason score ≥8 (p = 0.003). The study represents for the first time the incidence of HPV infection in prostate cancer in Indian population and strengthens the hypothesis that HPV infection could be one of the co factor associated with progression of prostate cancer.

Abstract
PROBLEM To determine the role of inactivated GSK3β with respect to Wnt/β-catenin pathway activation in HPV-16/18-associated cervical cancer. METHOD OF STUDY The expression of active (pGSK3β-Try(216)), inactive (pGSK3β-Ser(9)), and c-Myc as well as HPV-16/18 infection was analyzed in cervical intra-epithelial neoplasia (CIN), squamous cell carcinoma (SCCs) and normal by immunohistochemistry and multiplex PCR. The proteins level was also compared with β-catenin and APC expression. RESULTS The dramatic decrease of pGSK3β-Try(216) expression but ectopic overexpression of pGSK3β-Ser(9) and c-Myc was observed both in CIN and SCCs samples compared to normal tissues. 57/67 CIN and 132/153 SCCs showed HPV-16 infection, while 3/67 CIN and 4/153 SCCs were harbored with HPV-18 infection. Both the proteins were significantly upregulated in HPV-16 infected cases (P = 0.0001; P = 0.001) and also positively correlated with nuclear β-catenin (P = 0.0001; P = 0.0001). CONCLUSION The process of generation of HPV-16-associated cervical tumorigenesis is synergized with GSK3β inactivation and overactivation of Wnt/β-catenin pathway.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Human Papillomavirus (HPV) -associated cervical cancer is the second-most common cancer in women worldwide but it is the most frequent gynaecological cancer and cancer associated death in India women. The objective of this study was to assess knowledge about cervical cancer, HPV, HPV vaccine, HPV vaccine acceptance among school and undergraduates students and their parent's perception about acceptance of HPV vaccine in Northern part of India (Delhi and NCR regions). MATERIALS AND METHODS A qualitative questionnaire based survey among 2500 urban/rural students aged 12-22 years was conducted. RESULTS Overall, a low frequency (15%) of HPV and cervical cancer awareness was observed in students and their parents. However, the awareness was much higher in females belonging to urban setup compared to boys with a perception that HPV causes cervical cancer in women only. Additionally, only (13%) participants who were aware of cervical cancer and HPV) were willing to accept HPV vaccination. Apparently, parents of female students were two times more willing to accept HPV vaccination for their ward than male students (p<0.001; OR 95%CI = 2.09 (1.58-2.76). CONCLUSION Cervical cancer and HPV awareness among school, undergraduate students and also to their parents was found to be very low in this part of India. The level of awareness and education appears to be insignificant determinants in rural compared to urban setup. Better health education will be needed to maximize public awareness for cervical cancer prevention.

Clinical impact of de-regulated Notch-1 and Notch-3 in the development and progression of HPV-associated different histological subtypes of precancerous and cancerous lesions of human uterine cervix. Abstract
BACKGROUND Cervical cancer is the leading cause of cancer related deaths among women in India. Limited reports are available for Notch-1 and Notch-3 protein in cervical carcinoma, which play crucial role in cell proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis. METHODS This study was designed to evaluate the role of Notch-1 and Notch-3 with context to HPV infection in cervical carcinoma. A total of 168 tissue biopsy samples comprising of tumor specimens (n = 98), precancer (n = 30) and non-neoplastic cervical tissues (n = 40) were screened for HPV infection by PCR and expression of Notch-1 and Notch-3 protein by Immunohistochemistry and Immunoblotting. RESULTS 80% (24/30) were found to be positive for HPV in precancer and 86.7% (85/98) in cancer patients. Notch-1 expression of precancer and cancer cases was found to be significantly down-regulated with severity of disease in nuclear (3.43±0.29; 2.04±0.19, p = 0.0001, p = 0.0001) and cytoplasm (3.07±0.29; 2.29±0.17, p = 0.0001, p = 0.0001) obtained from different stages as compared to normal cervix tissue (5.40±0.19, 4.97±0.15; p<0.001; p<0.001). However, Notch-3 expression of above cases was significantly up-regulated with severity of disease and showed intense nuclear (4.17±0.39; 4.74±0.18, p = 0.0001, p = 0.0001) and cytoplasm (3.67±0.36; 4.48±0.18, p = 0.0001, p = 0.0001) of different stages as compared to normal cervix tissue (0.95±0.20, 0.70±0.20; p<0.001; p<0.001) respectively. CONCLUSIONS These findings suggest that Notch-1 and Notch-3 may play an important role with synergistic effect of HPV in regulating development and proliferation of cervical cancer through the deregulation of Notch signalling. This study also shows the clinical utility of both proteins which may be used as predictable biomarkers in diagnosing different histological sub-types of HPV associated cervical cancer. Nevertheless, abnormal activation of this pathway may provide legitimate targets for cervical cancer therapy.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine whether ethnicity affects awareness, knowledge, and attitudes regarding the human papillomavirus (HPV) and the HPV vaccine. METHODS English speaking women (n = 172) aged 18 and older were recruited from an outpatient gynaecology clinic to complete a self-administered cross-sectional questionnaire that gathered information about (1) virus awareness and knowledge, (2) vaccine awareness and knowledge, (3) attitudes towards the vaccine and (4) participant demographics. Subjects received a virus knowledge score (0 to 6), a vaccine knowledge score (0 to 10) and an attitudes score (8 to 40), with a higher score indicating more positive attitudes towards the vaccine. RESULTS Virus and vaccine awareness was significantly higher in Caucasian respondents than in non-Caucasian respondents: 93% versus 69% (P < 0.001) and 94% versus 64%, (P < 0.001), respectively. In a multivariate logistic regression model, the Caucasian ethnic group, higher education status, and greater number of years in Canada each emerged as independent predictors of vaccine awareness. Both virus and vaccine knowledge scores were significantly higher in Caucasian than non-Caucasian women: 4.6 versus 3.89 (P = 0.001) and 7.2 versus 6.4, (P = 0.042), respectively. Caucasian women had significantly higher (more positive) attitudes towards the vaccine than non-Caucasians (31.4 vs. 29.2, P = 0.021). Higher HPV vaccine knowledge was positively associated with an interest in vaccination (r(2) = 0.26, P < 0.01) and a more positive vaccine attitudes score (r(2) = 0.40, P < 0.001). CONCLUSION Virus and vaccine awareness were both higher in Caucasian women than in non-Caucasian women. Improving HPV vaccination knowledge has the potential to improve attitudes and vaccine uptake.

Abstract
This study investigated whether killer-cell immunoglobulin-like receptor (KIR) genes and human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-C alleles, receptors and ligands of natural killer cells are associated with the development of human papillomavirus (HPV)-related cervical disease in Korean women. Blood samples from 132 women with HPV-related cervical disease and 159 women without HPV infection were collected for genotyping of KIR genes and HLA-C alleles. Although no relationship was found between KIR genes and HPV-related cervical disease, a significant relationship was found between HLA-C alleles as ligands of KIR and HPV-related cervical disease. Women with HPV-related cervical disease were found to be significantly more likely to carry HLA-C*0303, particularly those with HPV 16 or 18 infection, and less likely to carry HLA-C*01 compared to women without HPV infection. HLA-C*0303 was found to confer susceptibility to HPV-related cervical disease, whereas HLA-C*01 was found to confer a protective effect against HPV-related cervical disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND New vaccine introduction is important to decrease morbidity and mortality in India. The goal of this study was to identify perceptions that are associated with administration of four selected vaccines for prevention of Japanese encephalitis (JE), typhoid fever, influenza and human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. METHODS A random sample of 785 pediatricians from a national list of Indian Academy of Pediatrics members was selected for a survey to assess perceptions of vaccine effectiveness and safety, and vaccine administration practices. Logistic regression was used to assess factors associated with selective or routine use. RESULTS Pediatricians reported administering typhoid (91.6%), influenza (60.1%), HPV (46.0%) and JE (41.9%) vaccines selectively or routinely. Pediatricians who perceived the vaccine to be safe were significantly more likely to report administration of JE (OR 2.6, 95% CI 1.3 to 5.3), influenza (OR 4.3, 95% CI 2.0 to 9.6) and HPV vaccine (OR 6.2, 95% CI 3.1 to 12.7). Pediatricians who perceived the vaccine to be effective were significantly more likely to report administration of JE (OR 3.3, 95% CI 1.6 to 6.5), influenza (OR 7.7, 95% CI 2.5 to 23.1) and HPV vaccine (OR 3.2, 95% CI 1.6 to 6.4) CONCLUSION: Understanding the role perceptions play provides an opportunity to design strategies to build support for vaccine use.

Abstract
Due to high cervical cancer rates and limited research on human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine acceptability in India, the research team examined parental attitudes toward HPV vaccines. Thirty-six interviews with parents were conducted to assess sexually transmitted infection (STI)-related knowledge and HPV-specific vaccine awareness and acceptability. Despite limited knowledge, parents had positive views toward HPV vaccines. Common barriers included concerns about side effects, vaccine cost, and missing work to receive the vaccine. Parents were strongly influenced by health care providers' recommendations. Our findings suggest that addressing parental concerns, health worker training and polices, and efforts to minimize cost will be central to successful HPV vaccine implementation.
