Insight to key diazotrophic community during composting of dairy manure with biochar and its role in nitrogen transformation

Revealing mechanisms of NH3 and N2O emissions reduction in the rapid bio-drying of food waste: Insights from organic nitrogen composition and microbial activity

Inevitably, aerobic biological treatment processes generate emissions of ammonia (NH3) and greenhouse gas (GHGs) emissions, especially nitrous oxide (N2O). The rapid bio-drying process (RBD) for food waste (FW) alleviates issues arising from its substantial growth. However, its emissions of NH3 and N2O remain unknown, and the correlation with nitrogen components in the substrate remains unclear, significantly impeding its widespread adoption. Here, the nitrogen loss and its mechanisms in RBD were investigated, and the results are as follows: The total emission of NH3 and N2O were1.42 and 1.16 mg/kg FW (fresh weight), respectively, achieving a 98 % reduction compared to prior studies. Structural equation modeling demonstrates that acid ammonium nitrogen (AN) decomposition chiefly generates NH3 in compost (p < 0.001). Strong correlation (p < 0.001) exists between amino acid nitrogen (AAN) and AN. In-depth analysis of microbial succession during the process reveals that the enrichment of Brevibacterium, Corynebacterium, Dietzia, Fastidiosipila, Lactobacillus, Mycobacterium, Peptoniphilus, and Truepera, are conducive to reducing the accumulation of AN and AAN in the substrate, minimizing NH3 emissions (p < 0.05). While Pseudomonas, Denitrobacterium, Nitrospira, and Bacillus are identified as key species contributing to N2O emissions during the process. Correlation analysis between physicochemical conditions and microbial succession in the system indicates that the moisture content and NO3- levels during the composting process provide suitable conditions for the growth of bacteria that contribute to NH3 and N2O emissions reduction, these enrichment in RBD process minimizing NH3 and N2O emissions. This study can offer crucial theoretical and data support for the resource utilization process of perishable organic solid waste, mitigating NH3 and GHGs emissions.

Removal of artificial sweeteners in wastewater treatment plants and their degradation during sewage sludge composting with micro- and nano-sized kaolin

This study surveyed the fates of artificial sweeteners in influent, effluent, and sewage sludge (SS) in wastewater treatment plant, and investigated the effects of Micro-Kaolin (Micro-KL) and Nano-Kaolin (Nano-KL) on nitrogen transformation and sucralose (SUC) and acesulfame (ACE) degradation during SS composting. Results showed the cumulative rate of ACE and SUC in SS was ∼76 %. During SS composting, kaolin reduced NH3 emissions by 30.2-45.38 %, and N2O emissions by 38.4-38.9 %, while the Micro-KL and Nano-KL reduced nitrogen losses by 14.8 % and 12.5 %, respectively. Meanwhile, Micro-KL and Nano-KL increased ACE degradation by 76.8 % and 84.2 %, and SUC degradation by 75.3 % and 77.7 %, and significantly shifted microbial community structure. Furthermore, kaolin caused a positive association between Actinobacteria and sweetener degradation. Taken together, kaolin effectively inhibited nitrogen loss and promoted the degradation of ACE and SUC during the SS composting, which is of great significance for the removal of emerging organic pollutants in SS.

Characteristics of humification, functional enzymes and bacterial community metabolism during manganese dioxide-added composting of municipal sludge

The aim of this study was to assess effects of MnO2 addition (CK-0%, T1-2% and T2-5%) on humification and bacterial community during municipal sludge (MS) composting. The results suggested that MnO2 addition inhibited the growth of Nitrospira but stimulated Nonomuraea, Actinomadura, Streptomyces and Thermopolyspora, facilitating the lignocellulose degradation and humification with the increase in organic matter degradation by 13.8%-19.2% and humic acid content by 10.9%-20.6%. Compared to CK, the abundances of exoglucanase (EC:3.2.1.91), endo-1,4-beta-xylanase (EC:3.2.1.136) and endomannanase (EC:3.2.1.78) increased by 88-99, 52-66 and 4-15 folds, respectively. However, 5%-MnO2 induced the enrichment of Mizugakiibacter that harms the environment of agricultural production. The addition of 2%-MnO2 was recommended for MS composting. Furthermore, metabolic function analysis indicated that MnO2 addition altered amino acid and carbohydrate metabolism, especially enhancing propanoate metabolism and butanoate metabolism but inhibiting citrate cycle. Structural equation modeling revealed that Nonomuraea and Actinomadura were the main drivers for lignocellulose degradation. This study provided theoretical guidance in regulating humification via MnO2 for MS composting.

From waste to protein: a new strategy of converting composted distilled grain wastes into animal feed

Distilled grain waste (DGW) is rich in nutrients and can be a potential resource as animal feed. However, DGW contains as much as 14% lignin, dramatically reducing the feeding value. White-rot fungi such as Pleurotus ostreatus could preferentially degrade lignin with high efficiency. However, lignin derivatives generated during alcohol distillation inhibit P. ostreatus growth. Thus, finding a new strategy to adjust the DGW properties to facilitate P. ostreatus growth is critical for animal feed preparation and DGW recycling. In this study, three dominant indigenous bacteria, including Sphingobacterium thermophilum X1, Pseudoxanthomonas byssovorax X3, and Bacillus velezensis 15F were chosen to generate single and compound microbial inoculums for DGW composting to prepare substrates for P. ostreatus growth. Compared with non-inoculated control or single microbial inoculation, all composite inoculations, especially the three-microbial compound, led to faster organic metabolism, shorter composting process, and improved physicochemical properties of DGW. P. ostreatus growth assays showed the fastest mycelial colonization (20.43 μg·g-1 ergosterol) and extension (9 mm/d), the highest ligninolytic enzyme activities (Lac, 152.68 U·g-1; Lip, 15.56 U·g-1; MnP, 0.34 U·g-1; Xylanase, 10.98 U·g-1; FPase, 0.71 U·g-1), and the highest lignin degradation ratio (30.77%) in the DGW sample after 12 h of composting with the three-microbial compound inoculation when compared to other groups. This sample was relatively abundant in bacteria playing critical roles in amino acid, carbohydrate, energy metabolism, and xenobiotic biodegradation, as suggested by metagenomic analysis. The feed value analysis revealed that P. ostreatus mycelia full colonization in composted DGW led to high fiber content retention and decreased lignin content (final ratio of 5% lignin) but elevated protein concentrations (about 130 g·kg-1 DM). An additional daily weight gain of 0.4 kg/d was shown in cattle feeding experiments by replacing 60% of regular feed with it. These findings demonstrate that compound inoculant consisting of three indigenous microorganisms is efficient to compost DGW and facilitate P. ostreatus growth. P. ostreatus decreased the lignin content of composted DGW during its mycelial growth, improving the quality of DGW for feeding cattle.

Ca(H2PO4)2 and MgSO4 activated nitrogen-related bacteria and genes in thermophilic stage of compost

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of Ca(H2PO4)2 and MgSO4 on the bacterial community and nitrogen metabolism genes in the aerobic composting of pig manure. The experimental treatments were set up as control (C), 1% Ca(H2PO4)2 + 2% MgSO4 (CaPM1), and 1.5% Ca(H2PO4)2 + 3% MgSO4 (CaPM2), which were used at the end of composting for potting trials. The results showed that Ca(H2PO4)2 and MgSO4 played an excellent role in retaining nitrogen and increasing the alkali-hydrolyzed nitrogen (AN), available phosphorus (AP), and available potassium (AK) contents of the composts. Adding Ca(H2PO4)2 and MgSO4 changed the microbial community structure of the compost. The microorganisms associated with nitrogen retention were activated. The complexity of the microbial network was enhanced. Genetic prediction analysis showed that the addition of Ca(H2PO4)2 and MgSO4 reduced the accumulation of nitroso-nitrogen and the process of denitrification. At the same time, despite the reduction of genes related to nitrogen fixation, the conversion of ammonia to nitrogenous organic compounds was promoted and the stability of nitrogen was increased. Mantel test analysis showed that Ca(H2PO4)2 and MgSO4 can affect nitrogen transformation-related bacteria and thus indirectly affect nitrogen metabolism genes by influencing the temperature, pH, and organic matter (OM) of the compost and also directly affected nitrogen metabolism genes through PO43- and Mg2+. The pot experiment showed that composting with 1.5% Ca(H2PO4)2 + 3% MgSO4 produced the compost product that improved the growth yield and nutrient content of cilantro and increased the fertility of the soil. In conclusion, Ca(H2PO4)2 and MgSO4 reduces the loss of nitrogen from compost, activates nitrogen-related bacteria and genes in the thermophilic phase of composting, and improves the fertilizer efficiency of compost products. Bioponic systems with biochar: Insights into nutrient recovery, heavy metal reduction, and microbial interactions in digestate-based bioponics

Bioponics is a nutrient-recovery technology that transforms nutrient-rich organic waste into plant biomass/bioproducts. Integrating biochar with digestate from anaerobic wastewater treatment process can improve resource recovery while mitigating heavy metal contamination. The overarching goal of this study was to investigate the application of biochar in digestate-based bioponics, focusing on its efficacy in nutrient recovery and heavy metal removal, while also exploring the microbial community dynamics. In this study, biochar was applied at 50 % w/w with 500 g dry weight of digestate during two 28-day crop cycles (uncontrolled pH and pH 5.5) using white stem pak choi (Brassica rapa var. chinensis) as a model crop. The results showed that the digestate provided sufficient phosphorus and nitrogen, supporting plant growth. Biochar amendment improved plant yield and phosphate solubilization and reduced nitrogen loss, especially at the pH 5.5. Furthermore, biochar reduced the heavy metal accumulation in plants, while concentrating these metals in the residual sludge. However, owing to potential non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic health risks, it is still not recommended to directly consume plants cultivated in digestate-based bioponic systems. Additionally, biochar amendment exhibited pronounced impact on the microbial community, promoting microbes responsible for nutrient solubilization and cycling (e.g., Tetrasphaera, Herpetosiphon, Hyphomicrobium, and Pseudorhodoplanes) and heavy metal stabilization (e.g., Leptolinea, Fonticella, Romboutsia, and Desulfurispora) in both the residual sludge and plants. Overall, the addition of biochar enhanced the microbial community and facilitated the metal stabilization and the cycling of nutrients within both residual sludge and root systems, thereby improving the overall efficiency of the bioponics.

Control of nitrogen and odor emissions during chicken manure composting with a carbon-based microbial inoculant and a biotrickling filter

Although aerobic composting is usually utilized in livestock manure disposal, the emission of odorous gases from compost not only induces harm to the human body and the environment, but also causes loss of nitrogen, sulfur, and other essential elements, resulting in a decline in product quality. The impact of biotrickling filter (BTF) and insertion of carbon-based microbial agent (CBMA) on compost maturation, odor emissions, and microbial population during the chicken manure composting were assessed in the current experiment. Compared with the CK group, CBMA addition accelerated the increase in pile temperature (EG group reached maximum temperature 10 days earlier than CK group), increased compost maturation (GI showed the highest increase of 41.3% on day 14 in EG group), resulted in 36.59% and 14.60% increase in NO3--N content and the total nitrogen retention preservation rate after composting. The deodorization effect of biotrickling filter was stable, and the removal rates of NH3, H2S, and TVOCs reached more than 90%, 96%, and 56%, respectively. Furthermore, microbial sequencing showed that CBMA effectively changed the microbial community in compost, protected the ammonia-oxidizing microorganisms, and strengthened the nitrification of the compost. In addition, the nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria were more active in the cooling period than they were in the thermophilic period. Moreover, the abundance of denitrification genes containing nirS, nirK, and nosZ in EG group was lower than that in CK group. Thus, a large amount of nitrogen was retained under the combined drive of BTF and CBMA during composting. This study made significant contributions to our understanding of how to compost livestock manure while reducing releases of odors and raising compost quality.

Diazotrophic community in the sediments of Poyang Lake in response to water level fluctuations

Water level fluctuations (WLFs) are typical characteristic of floodplain lakes and dominant forces regulating the structure and function of lacustrine ecosystems. The sediment diazotrophs play important roles in contributing bioavailable nitrogen to the aquatic environment. However, the relationship between the diazotrophic community and WLFs in floodplain lakes is unknown. In this paper, we carried out a comprehensive investigation on the alpha diversity, abundance, composition and co-occurrence network of the sediment diazotrophs during different water level phases in Poyang Lake. There were no regular variation patterns in the alpha diversity and abundance of the sediment diazotrophs with the water level phase transitions. The relative abundance of some diazotrophic phyla (including Alphaproteobacteria, Deltaproteobacteri, Euryarchaeota, and Firmicutes) and genera (including Geobacter, Deferrisoma, Desulfuromonas, Rivicola, Paraburkholderia, Methylophilus, Methanothrix, Methanobacterium, and Clostridium) was found to change with the water level phase transitions. The results of ANOSIM, PerMANOVA, and DCA at the OTU level showed that the diazotrophic community structure in the low water level phase was significantly different from that in the two high water level phases, while there was no significant difference between the two high water level phases. These results indicated that the diazotrophic community was affected by the declining water level in terms of the composition, while the rising water level contributed to the recoveries of the diazotrophic community. The diazotrophs co-occurrence network was disrupted by the declining water level, but it was strengthened by the rising water level. Moreover, redundancy analysis showed that the variation of the diazotrophic community composition was mostly related to sediment total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorous (TP). Interestingly, the levels of sediment TN and TP were also found to vary with the water level phase transitions. Therefore, it might be speculated that the WLFs may influence the sediment TN and TP, and in turn influence the diazotrophic community composition. These data can contribute to broadening our understanding of the ecological impacts of WLFs and the nitrogen fixation process in floodplain lakes.

Effects of nitrogen supply on hydrogen-oxidizing bacterial enrichment to produce microbial protein: Comparing nitrogen fixation and ammonium assimilation

To investigate the effects of nitrogen source supply on microbial protein (MP) production by hydrogen-oxidizing bacteria (HOB) under continuous feed gas provision, a sequencing batch culture comparison (N2 fixation versus ammonium assimilation) was performed. The results confirmed that even under basic cultivation conditions, N2-fixing HOB (NF-HOB) communities showed higher levels of CO2 and N2 fixation (190.45 mg/L Δ CODt and 11.75 mg/L Δ TNbiomass) than previously known, with the highest biomass yield being 0.153 g CDW/g COD-H2. Rich ammonium stimulated MP synthesis and the biomass accumulation of communities (increased by 7.4 ～ 14.3 times), presumably through the enhancement of H2 and CO2 absorption. The micro mechanism may involve encouraging the enrichment of species like Xanthobacter and Acinetobacter then raising the abundance of nitrogenase and glutamate synthase to facilitate the nitrogen assimilation. This would provide NF-HOB with ideas for optimizing their MP synthesis activity.

Influence of microbial community succession on biodegradation of municipal sludge during biodrying coupled with photocatalysis

A 20-day sludge biodrying process was coupled with photocatalysis to improve biodrying efficiency and investigate the effect of photocatalysis on biodegradation. After biodrying, the moisture content in the coupled photocatalytic group (TCA) and the control group (TUCA) decreased from 63.61% to 50.82% and 52.94%, respectively, and the volatile solids content decreased from 73.18% to 63.42% and 64.39%, respectively. Neutral proteinase activity decreased by 9.38% and 28.69%, and lipase activity decreased by 6.12% and 26.17%, respectively, indicating that photocatalysis helped maintain neutral proteinase and lipase activities. The Chao1 and Shannon indices showed that photocatalysis increased fungal diversity and reduced bacterial richness and diversity. The β diversity clustering analysis indicated that the bacterial community structure during the thermophilic phase in TCA differed from that in TUCA. The Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes annotation showed that photocatalysis has the potential to promote the synthesis and degradation of ketone bodies. Biodrying coupled with photocatalysis can improve the dewatering of sludge without negatively affecting biodegradation.

A change in substance and microbial community structure during the co-composting of kitchen waste anaerobic digestion effluent, sewage sludge and Chinese medicine residue

Anaerobic digestion is a resource recovery method for organic waste, gaining attention due to carbon reduction. Disposing of anaerobic digestion effluent (ADE) is crucial for developing anaerobic digestion, but conventional wastewater treatment fails to effectively recover nutrients contained in the ADE. In the present study, the ADE without solid-liquid separation was mixed with sewage sludge and Chinese medicine residue for the composting, where the ADE could be recovered at high temperature through humification. Besides, the nitrogen balance, humification process, and microbial dynamics during the composting process were studied. The results showed that the group supplemented with ADE could increase the nitrogen retention efficiency by 2.21 % compared to the control group. High ammonia nitrogen content and salinity did not negatively affect the maturity and phytotoxicity of compost products and even increase the humification degree of compost products. Moreover, additional ADE may not alter microbial community structure, which could contribute to microbial succession. This is the first time to investigate the substance transformation and shift in microbial community structure while applying composting process for ADE treatment, in which the anaerobic-aerobic collaborative disposal process provides an alternative solution for the recovery of ADE.

Effects of adding lignocellulose-degrading microbial agents and biochar on nitrogen metabolism and microbial community succession during pig manure composting

This study assessed the influence of the additions of lignocellulose-degrading microbial agents and biochar on nitrogen (N) metabolism and microbial community succession during pig manure composting. Four treatments were established: CK (without additives), M (lignocellulose-degrading microbial agents), BC (biochar), and MBC (lignocellulose-degrading microbial agents and biochar). The results revealed that all treatments with additives decreased N loss compared with CK. In particular, the concentrations of total N and NO3--N were the highest in M, which were 21.87% and 188.67% higher than CK, respectively. Meanwhile, the abundance of denitrifying bacteria Flavobacterium, Enterobacter, and Devosia reduced with additives. The roles of Anseongella (nitrifying bacterium) and Nitrosomonas (ammonia-oxidizing bacterium) in NO3--N transformation were enhanced in M and BC, respectively. N metabolism pathway prediction indicated that lignocellulose-degrading microbial agents addition could enhance N retention effectively mainly by inhibiting denitrification. The addition of biochar enhanced oxidation of NH4+-N to NO2--N and N fixation, as well as inhibited denitrification. These results revealed that the addition of lignocellulose-degrading microbial agents individually was more conducive to improve N retention in pig manure compost.

Screening the optimal modified biochar for nitrogen retention in black soil

Reducing the environmental problems caused by nitrogen loss and nitrogen pollution is of great significance. The addition of biochar to soil is a new method for increasing nitrogen interception due to the special structural and physicochemical properties of biochar. The optimal modified biochar was screened out after acid-base modification and batch adsorption test in this paper. And then the effects of different soil and biochar mixing methods on soil physicochemical properties and nitrogen adsorption and retention were explored through soil column leaching test. The results showed that the biochar with a pyrolysis temperature of 700 °C had the best adsorption effect on nitrogen after being modified by 0.1 mol/L HCI, and the adsorption capacity of nitrate nitrogen reached 121.46 mg/g. The adsorption process of ammonia nitrogen and nitrate nitrogen conformed to the Langmuir model and was mainly homogeneous monolayer. After mixing the selected modified biochar with black soil, the pH increased by 4.77%, the content of ammonia nitrogen increased by 4.89%, and the nitrate content increased by 16.62%. In this study, the adsorption effect of biochar on nitrogen in black soil was discussed, so as to explore the optimal use of biochar in soil, which provided some reference basis for the relevant research.

Biofilm-developed biomass residues as novel bulking agents and microbial carriers for synergistically enhanced bioevaporation: Degradation potential and contribution to metabolic heat

Economical and easily prepared bulking agents and microbial carriers are essential in the practical application of bioevaporation process. Biofilm-developed biomass residues not only provide structural support and microbial sources but also may contribute metabolic heat to the bioevaporation process, achieving the enhanced water evaporation and synergistic treatment of biomass residues. In this study, biofilm was cultivated on the rice straw, wheat straw, sawdust, corncob, luffa cylindrica and palm first, then those biofilm-developed biomass residues were successfully used as the bulking agents and microbial carriers in food waste bioevaporation. The degradation potential (volatile solid degradation ratio) of those biomass residues was in the order of corncob (23.96%), wheat straw (21.12%), rice straw (14.57%), luffa cylindrica (11.02%), sawdust (-2.87%) and palm (-9.24%). It's primarily the degradation of the major components, cellulose and hemicellulose, in corncob and wheat straw governed the metabolic heat contribution (91.73 and 79.61%) to the bioevaporation process. While the high lignin content in sawdust (14.57%) and palm (28.62%) caused negligible degradation of cellulose and hemicellulose, hence made them only function as structural supporter and did not contribute any metabolic heat. Moreover, though the metabolic heat contribution of rice straw and luffa cylindrica reached 58.19 and 37.84%, their lowest lignocellulose content (62.99 and 65.95%) and their lower density, as well as the dominated Xanthomonas (bacteria) and Mycothermus (fungi) led to their rapid collapse during the repeated cycles of bioevaporation. The greatest abundance of thermophilic bacteria (22.3-88.0%) and thermophilic fungi (82.0-99.3%) was observed in the corncob pile. Furthermore, considering the Staphylococcus (pathogenic bacteria) and Candida (animal pathogen) was effectively inhibited, the biofilm-developed corncob was the most favorable bulking agents and microbial carrier for the synergistic bioevaporation of highly concentrated organic wastewater and biomass residues.

Enzymatic fermentation of rapeseed cake significantly improved the soil environment of tea rhizosphere

BACKGROUND

Rapeseed cake is an important agricultural waste. After enzymatic fermentation, rapeseed cake not only has specific microbial diversity but also contains a lot of fatty acids, organic acids, amino acids and their derivatives, which has potential value as a high-quality organic fertilizer. However, the effects of fermented rapeseed cake on tea rhizosphere microorganisms and soil metabolites have not been reported. In this study, we aimed to elucidate the effect of enzymatic rapeseed cake fertilizer on the soil of tea tree, and to reveal the correlation between rhizosphere soil microorganisms and nutrients/metabolites.

RESULTS

The results showed that: (1) The application of enzymatic rapeseed cake increased the contents of soil organic matter (OM), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), available nitrogen (AN), and available phosphorus (AP); increased the activities of soil urease (S-UE), soil catalase (S-CAT), soil acid phosphatase (S-ACP) and soil sucrase (S-SC); (2) The application of enzymatic rapeseed cake increased the relative abundance of beneficial rhizosphere microorganisms such as Chaetomium, Inocybe, Pseudoxanthomonas, Pseudomonas, Sphingomonas, and Stenotrophomonas; (3) The application of enzymatic rapeseed cake increased the contents of sugar, organic acid, and fatty acid in soil, and the key metabolic pathways were concentrated in sugar and fatty acid metabolisms; (4) The application of enzymatic rapeseed cake promoted the metabolism of sugar, organic acid, and fatty acid in soil by key rhizosphere microorganisms; enzymes and microorganisms jointly regulated the metabolic pathways of sugar and fatty acids in soil.

CONCLUSIONS

Enzymatic rapeseed cake fertilizer improved the nutrient status and microbial structure of tea rhizosphere soil, which was beneficial for enhancing soil productivity in tea plantations. These findings provide new insights into the use of enzymatic rapeseed cake as an efficient organic fertilizer and expand its potential for application in tea plantations.

The positive effects of mineral-solubilizing microbial inoculants on asymbiotic nitrogen fixation of abandoned mine soils are driven by keystone phylotype

Toward the restoration of the increasing numbers of abandoned mines across China, external-soil spray seeding technologies have become more extensively utilized. However, considerable challenges remain that seriously hamper the effectiveness of these technologies, such as inadequate nutrient availability for plants. Previous studies have shown that mineral-solubilizing microbial inoculants can increase the nodules of legumes. However, their effects on symbiotic nitrogen fixation (SNF), asymbiotic nitrogen fixation (ANF), and diazotrophic communities remain unknown. Further, research into the application of functional microorganisms for the restoration of abandoned mines has been conducted either in greenhouses, or their application in the field has been too brief. Thus, we established a four-year field experiment in an abandoned mine and quantified the SNF, ANF, and diazotrophic communities. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first to describe the long-term application of specific functional microorganisms for the remediation of abandoned mine sites in the field. We revealed that mineral-solubilizing microbial inoculants significantly increased the soil ANF rate and SNF content. There was no significant correlation between the diazotrophic alpha diversity and soil ANF rate; however, there were strong positive associations between the relative abundance and biodiversity of keystone phylotype (module #5) within ecological clusters and the ANF rate. Molecular ecological networks indicated that microbial inoculants increased network complexity and stability. Moreover, the inoculants significantly enhanced the deterministic ratio of diazotrophic communities. Furthermore, homogeneous selection predominantly mediated the assembly of soil diazotrophic communities. It was concluded that mineral-solubilizing microorganisms played a critical role in maintaining and enhancing nitrogen, which offers a new solution with great potential for the restoration of ecosystems at abandoned mine sites.

Biochar as smart organic catalyst to regulate bacterial dynamics during food waste composting

The impact of wheat straw biochar (WSB) on bacterial dynamics succession during food waste (FW) composting was analyzed. Six treatments [0(T1), 2.5(T2), 5 (T3), 7.5 (T4), 10 (T5), and 15 %(T6)] dry weight WSB were used with FW and saw dust for composting. At the highest thermal peak at 59 ℃ in T6, the pH varied from 4.5 to 7.3, and electrical conductivity among the treatments varied from 1.2 to 2.0 mScm¹. Firmicutes (25-97 %), Proteobacteria (8-45 %), and Bacteroidota (5-50 %) were among the dominate phyla of the treatments. Whereas, Bacillus (5-85 %), Limoslactobacillus (2-40 %), and Sphingobacterium (2-32 %) were highest among the identified genus in treatments but surprisingly Bacteroides was in greater abundance in the control treatments. Moreover, heatmap constructed with 35 various genera in all the treatments showed that Gammaproteobacterial genera contributed in large proportion after 42 days in T6. Additionally, a dynamic shift from Lactobacillus fermentum to higher abundance of Bacillus thermoamylovorans was reported on 42 days of FW composting. Biochar 15 % amendment can improve FW composting by influencing bacterial dynamics.

A review of additives use in straw composting

Straw composting is not only a process of decomposition and re-synthesis of organic matter, but also a process of harmless treatment, avoiding air pollution caused by straw burning. Many factors, including raw materials, humidity, C/N, and microbial structure, may determine the composting process and the quality of final product. In recent years, many researches have focused on composting quality improvement by adding one or more exogenous substances, including inorganic additives, organic additives, and microbial agents. Although a few review publications have compiled the research on the use of additives in composting, none of them has specifically addressed the composting of crop straw. Additives used in straw composting can increase degradation of recalcitrant substances and provide ideal living surroundings for microorganism, and thus reduce nitrogen loss and promote humus formation, etc. This review's objective is to critically evaluate the impact of various additives on straw composting process, and analyze how these additives enhance final quality of composting. Furthermore, a vision for future perspectives is provided. This paper can serve as a reference for straw composting process optimization and composting end-product improvement.

Application of spray-dried erythromycin fermentation residue as a soil amendment: antibiotic resistance genes, nitrogen cycling, and microbial community structure

Erythromycin fermentation residue (EFR) after spray drying could be reused as a soil amendment. However, the effects of spray-dried EFR on antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), nitrogen cycling, and microbial community structure in soil are rarely reported. In this study, a pot experiment was conducted by adding spray-dried EFR to soil. For the application of 1.0% spray-dried EFR, the residual erythromycin (ERY) could be rapidly removed with the half-life of 22.2 d; the total relative abundance of ARGs increased at first, but decreased to the initial level of the control group in the end; genes related to ammonium assimilation (glnA, gltB, gltD), ammonification (gdhA, gudB, cynT, cynS, ncd2), denitrification (narI, narG, narH), assimilatory nitrate reduction (nirA, nasA), and dissimilatory nitrate reduction (nirD) were enriched; soil microbial community structure presented temporary variation. Network analysis showed significant negative correlations between ARGs and nitrogen cycling genes. The addition of 6.0% spray-dried EFR resulted in the amplification of ARGs and inhibition of nitrogen cycling. This work provides new insights into the effects of spray-dried EFR on ARGs, nitrogen cycling, and microbial community structure within the fertilized soil.

Exploration of β-glucosidase-producing microorganisms community structure and key communities driving cellulose degradation during composting of pure corn straw by multi-interaction analysis

Poor management of crop residues leads to environmental pollution and composting is a sustainable practice for addressing the challenge. However, knowledge about composting with pure crop straw is still limited, which is a novel and feasible composting strategy. In this study, pure corn straw was in-situ composted for better management. Community structure of β-glucosidase-producing microorganisms during composting was deciphered using high-throughput sequencing. Results showed that the compost was mature with organic matter content of 37.83% and pH value of 7.36 and pure corn straw could be composted successfully. Cooling phase was major period for cellulose degradation with the highest β-glucosidase activity (476.25 μmol·p-Nitr/kg·dw·min) and microbial diversity (Shannon index, 3.63; Chao1 index, 500.81). Significant compositional succession was observed in the functional communities during composting with Streptomyces (14.32%), Trichoderma (13.85%) and Agromyces (11.68%) as dominant genera. β-Glucosidase-producing bacteria and fungi worked synergistically as a network to degrade cellulose with Streptomyces (0.3045**) as the key community revealed by multi-interaction analysis. Organic matter (-0.415***) and temperature (-0.327***) were key environmental parameters regulating cellulose degradation via influencing β-glucosidase-producing communities, and β-glucosidase played a key role in mediating this process. The above results indicated that responses of β-glucosidase-producing microorganisms to cellulose degradation were reflected at both network and individual levels and multi-interaction analysis could better explain the relationship between variables concerning composting cellulose degradation. The work is of significance for understanding cellulose degradation microbial communities and process during composting of pure corn straw.

Food waste digestate composting enhancement by sodium polyacrylate addition: Effects on nitrogen transformation processes and bacterial community dynamics

The influences of sodium polyacrylate (PAAS) at the ratios of 0% (CK), 0.5% (F1), 1.0% (F2), 1.5% (F3), 2.0% (F4) and 2.5% (F5) on nitrogen transformation and bacterial community composition were investigated in the composting of food waste digestate (FWD) and corn straw (CS). PAAS addition increased the thermophilic temperature but had no significant effect on pH values. PAAS exerted significantly effects on the concentration of total nitrogen (TN), ammonia nitrogen (NH₄⁺-N), nitrite-nitrogen (NO₂^--N) and nitrate-nitrogen (NO₃^--N). The compost product in 1.0% PAAS treatment was more active in absorbing nutrients. Firmicutes (9.40-83.54%), Actinobacteriota (9.98-51.50%), Proteobacteria (0.20-27.87%) and Bacteroidota (0.11-34.69%) were the dominant phyla in FWD composting. Moreover, relative to CK, PAAS promoted the propagation of dominant bacterial phyla Firmicutes with increment of 30.05-102.06% in the thermophilic phase. Kroppenstedtia, Thermobifida and Saccharomonospora were observed to be dominant at the maturing phase and correlated with NH₄⁺-N, NO₂^--N, TN and NO₃^--N. Therefore, they might be regarded as probable biomarkers symbolic for the maturing phase during FWD composting. The compost product had the highest maturity degree in 1.0% PAAS treatment. These results indicated that PAAS addition improved the maturity and nutrient contents of the compost product as well as altered compost bacterial community dynamics.

Effects of potassium persulfate on nitrogen loss and microbial community during cow manure and corn straw composting

Strong oxidants can reduce the emission of NH₃ during composting. But as a commonly used oxidant, the influence of persulfate on nitrogen transformation during composting is unclear. In this study, the effects of 0.3 %-1.2 % potassium persulfate (PS) on nitrogen losses and microbial community during air-dried cow manure composting were investigated. The results showed that PS could reduce nitrogen losses compared to the control. This was because it decreased pH and the maximum NH₄⁺-N content of treatments, which was beneficial to nitrogen retention. In addition, Pseudoxanthomonas and Chelativorans were enriched compared to the control, which might be associated with NH₄⁺-N transformation and nitrogen fixation. Meanwhile, PS increased the abundance of thermophilic lignocellulose degrading bacteria, and 0.3 % and 0.6 % PS increased the maximum temperature and the duration of the thermophilic period. This study indicated that PS could reduce nitrogen losses in composting and greatly influence nitrogen transforming and lignocellulose degrading bacteria.

Feedstock-dependent abundance of functional genes related to nitrogen transformation controlled nitrogen loss in composting

The objective of this work was to explore how selection of feedstock affects nitrogen cycle genes during composting, which eventually determines the nitrogen loss. Four composting mixes (CM: chicken manure; SM: sheep manure; MM_1/3: mixed manure with CM: SM = 1:3 w/w, MM_3/1: CM: SM = 3:1 w/w) were investigated. Results showed that adding 25 % and 75 % SM to CM reduced 26.5 % and 57.9 % nitrogen loss, respectively. CM contained more ammonification genes and nrfA gene, while SM had more denitrification genes. Nitrogen fixation genes in CM were slightly higher than that in SM at the initial stage, but they sharply dropped off as the composting entered the high temperature stage. MM_1/3 showed significantly reduced ammonification genes than CM, and increased nitrogen fixation and NH₄⁺ assimilation genes. Therefore, adding SM to CM could change the abundance of genes and enzymes related to nitrogen cycle to reduce nitrogen loss.

Functional keystone drive nitrogen conversion during different animal manures composting

In this study, nitrogen transformation of chicken manure (CM) and cattle dung (CD) during composting was analyzed and its related functional keystones were identified. The results showed that chicken manure showed more severe nitrogen conversion during composting. The main N conversion factors in cattle dung were nitrite nitrogen (NO₂^--N) and ammonium nitrogen (NH₄⁺-N), while the main N conversion factors in chicken manure were NH₄⁺-N and nitrate nitrogen (NO₃^--N). The nitrogen-transforming bacterial community in chicken manure was more diverse. Variations in functional keystone abundances in cattle dung tended to be confined to the cooling and maturation periods, whereas changes in chicken manure persisted throughout the composting process. Environmental factors affected the functional keystones of nitrogen transformation. This study may provide directions for regulating nitrogen conversion in animal manure composting.

Dynamics of fungal species related to nitrogen transformation and their network patterns during cattle manure-corn straw with biochar composting

Fungi are reputed to play a significant role in the composting matrix as decomposers of recalcitrant organic materials like cellulose and lignin. However, information on the fungi communities' roles in nitrogen transformation under a compost-biochar mixture is scarce. This study investigated shifts in fungal species mediating N transformation and their network patterns in cattle manure-corn straw (CMCS) and CMCS plus biochar (CMCB) composting using high-throughput sequencing data. The results revealed that the addition of biochar altered fungal richness and diversity and significantly influenced their compositions during composting. Biochar also altered the compost fungal network patterns; CMCS had a more complex network with higher positive links than CMCB, suggesting stable niche overlap. The consistent agreement of multivariate analyses (redundancy, network, regression, Mantel and path analyses) indicated that Ciliophora_sp in CMCS and unclassified_norank_Pleosporales in CMCB were the key fungal species mediating total N transformation, whereas Scedosporium_prolificans in CMCS and unclassified_Microascaceae in CMCB were identified as major predictive indices determining NO₃^--N transformation. Also, Coprinopsis cinerea and Penicillium oxalicum were the predictive factors for NH₄⁺-N transformation in CMCS and CMCB during composting. These results indicated that the effects of biochar on N conversions in composting could be unraveled using multivariate analyses on fungi community evolution, network patterns, and metabolism.

Enhancing rice straw compost with an amino acid-derived ionic liquid as additive

To improve the quality of lignocellulose compost, the effect of a potential new-generation additive-amino acid-derived ionic liquid-on a compost pile comprising 50% rice straw was studied preliminarily. The addition of 1% 1-carboxymethanaminium chloride (glycine hydrochloride [Gly][Cl]) caused observably positive changes in the physical, chemical, and microbiological properties of the compost. After 30 days of composting, the humus and total nitrogen concentrations were 130.85 and 28.8 g/kg, showing an increase of 93.28% and 67.44%, respectively, compared with the concentrations in the beginning of composting; these concentrations were 76.97% and 41.69%, respectively, for the control group (without [Gly][Cl]). Thus, amino acid-derived ionic liquids can be promising additives for enhancing the quality of composts for which straw is used as the primary component.

Highly efficient bio-adsorption of Malachite green using Chinese Fan-Palm Biochar (Livistona chinensis)

The discharge of effluents from the textile industry is a multidimensional problem that affects the ecosystem in many ways. Though many new technologies are being developed, it remains to be seen which of those can be practiced in a real scenario. The current investigation attempts to absorb the Malachite Green, an effluent from textile dye using Chinese Fan Palm Seed Biochar. Accordingly, biochar was prepared using fruits of Chinese Fan Palm (Livistona chinensis) tree. The fruit also yielded a significant amount of biochar and bio-oil. 1.346 kg of fresh and cleaned fruit was fast pyrolyzed at 500 °C in a laboratory-scale Pyrolyzer resulting in 0.487 kg of biochar and 0.803 L of bio-oil. The remaining fruit matter was converted to gaseous products. The kinetics of dye removal were studied and the parameters were determined. The study advocates that the Langmuir isotherm model simulates the adsorption experiment, to a good extent. From the plot, the maximum (monolayer) adsorption capacity, Q_m was determined to be 21.4 mg/g. The suitability of the Langmuir isotherm model onto biochar was established by the high correlation coefficient, R² that was higher than 0.97.

Biochar Addition Altered Bacterial Community and Improved Photosynthetic Rate of Seagrass: A Mesocosm Study of Seagrass Thalassia hemprichii

Seagrass meadows, as typical “blue carbon” ecosystems, play critical ecological roles in the marine ecosystem and decline every year. The application of biochar in soil has been proposed as a potential soil amendment to improve soil quality and mitigate global climate change. The effects of biochar on soil bacterial activities are integrally linked to the potential of biochar in achieving these benefits. However, biochar has been rarely applied in marine ecosystems. Whether the application of biochar could work on the seagrass ecosystem remained unknown. In this study, we investigated the responses of sediment and rhizosphere bacterial communities of seagrass Thalassia hemprichii to the biochar addition derived from maize at ratios of 5% by dry weight in the soil during a one-month incubation. Results indicated that the biochar addition significantly changed the sedimental environment with increasing pH, total phosphorus, and total kalium while total nitrogen decreased. Biochar addition significantly altered both the rhizosphere and sediment bacterial community compositions. The significant changes in rhizosphere bacterial community composition occurred after 30days of incubation, while the significant variations in sediment bacterial community composition distinctly delayed than in sediment occurred on the 14th day. Biochar application improved nitrification and denitrification, which may accelerate nitrogen cycling. As a stabilizer to communities, biochar addition decreased the importance of deterministic selection in sediment and changed the bacterial co-occurrence pattern. The biochar addition may promote seagrass photosynthesis and growth by altering the bacterial community compositions and improving nutrient circulation in the seagrass ecosystem, contributing to the seagrass health improvement. This study provided a theoretical basis for applying biochar to the seagrass ecosystem and shed light on the feasible application of biochar in the marine ecosystem.

Development of a consortium-based microbial agent beneficial to composting of distilled grain waste for Pleurotus ostreatus cultivation

BACKGROUND

Pleurotus ostreatus is an edible mushroom popularly cultivated worldwide. Distilled grain waste (DGW) is a potential substrate for P. ostreatus cultivation. However, components in DGW restrict P. ostreatus mycelial growth. Therefore, a cost-effective approach to facilitate rapid P. ostreatus colonization on DGW substrate will benefit P. ostreatus cultivation and DGW recycling.

RESULTS

Five dominant indigenous bacteria, Sphingobacterium sp. X1, Ureibacillus sp. X2, Pseudoxanthomonas sp. X3, Geobacillus sp. X4, and Aeribacillus sp. X5, were isolated from DGW and selected to develop a consortium-based microbial agent to compost DGW for P. ostreatus cultivation. Microbial agent inoculation led to faster carbohydrate metabolism, a higher temperature (73.2 vs. 71.2 °C), a longer thermophilic phase (5 vs. 3 days), and significant dynamic changes in microbial community composition and diversity in composts than those of the controls. Metagenomic analysis showed the enhanced microbial metabolisms, such as xenobiotic biodegradation and metabolism and terpenoid and polyketide metabolism, during the mesophilic phase after microbial agent inoculation, which may facilitate the fungal colonization on the substrate. In accordance with the bioinformatic analysis, a faster colonization of P. ostreatus was observed in the composts with microbial inoculation than in control after composting for 48 h, as indicated from substantially higher fungal ergosterol content, faster lignocellulose degradation, and higher lignocellulase activities in the former than in the latter. The final mushroom yield shared no significant difference between composts with microbial inoculation and control, with 0.67 ± 0.05 and 0.60 ± 0.04 kg fresh mushroom/kg DGW, respectively (p > 0.05).

CONCLUSION

The consortium-based microbial agent comprised indigenous microorganisms showing application potential in composting DGW for providing substrate for P. ostreatus cultivation and will provide an alternative to facilitate DGW recycling.

Analysis of Cow-Calf Microbiome Transfer Routes and Microbiome Diversity in the Newborn Holstein Dairy Calf Hindgut

Hindgut microorganisms in newborn calves play an important role in the development of immunity and metabolism, and optimization of performance. However, knowledge of the extent to which microbiome colonization of the calf intestine is dependent on maternal characteristics is limited. In this study, placenta, umbilical cord, amniotic fluid, colostrum, cow feces, and calf meconium samples were collected from 6 Holstein cow-calf pairs. Microbial composition was analyzed by 16S rRNA gene high-throughput sequencing, and maternal transfer characteristics assessed using SourceTracker based on Gibbs sampling to fit the joint distribution using the mean proportions of each sample with meconium as the "sink" and other sample types as different "sources." Alpha and beta diversity analyses revealed sample type-specific microbiome features: microbial composition of the placenta, umbilical cord, amniotic fluid, colostrum, and calf feces were similar, but differed from cow feces (p < 0.05). Compared with profiles of meconium vs. placenta, meconium vs. umbilical cord, and meconium vs. colostrum, differences between the meconium and amniotic fluid were most obvious. SourceTracker analysis revealed that 23.8 ± 2.21% of the meconium OTUs matched those of umbilical cord samples, followed by the meconium-placenta pair (15.57 ± 2.2%), meconium-colostrum pair (14.4 ± 1.9%), and meconium-amniotic fluid pair (11.2 ± 1.7%). The matching ratio between meconium and cow feces was the smallest (10.5 ± 1%). Overall, our data indicated that the composition of the meconium microflora was similar compared with multiple maternal sites including umbilical cord, placenta, colostrum, and amniotic fluid. The umbilical cord microflora seemed to contribute the most to colonization of the fecal microflora of calves. Bacteria with digestive functions such as cellulose decomposition and rumen fermentation were mainly transmitted during the maternal transfer process.

Succession of diazotroph community and functional gene response to inoculating swine manure compost with a lignocellulose-degrading consortium

Diazotroph community contributes to the nitrogen mass and improves the agronomic quality of composting product, but their responses to microbial inoculation during composting are unclear. In this study, the lignocellulose-degrading consortium was inoculated at different levels (0%: CK (control) and 10%: T) to investigate their effects on the variations in the diazotroph community and functional gene during composting. In the later composting phase, the nifH gene copy number was 17.50-25.28% higher in T than CK. The nitrogenase abundance in CK and T were 0.042% and 0.046% in composting product, respectively. Network analysis indicated that inoculation affected the co-occurrence patterns of the diazotroph community and changed the keystone species composition. Partial least-squares path modeling showed that available carbon sources and the succession of the diazotroph community mainly determined the increased abundance of nifH gene. Microbial inoculation stimulated the diazotrophs activities, and was conducive to the nitrogen production in composting product.

Comparative evaluation of biochar, pelelith, and garbage enzyme on nitrogenase and nitrogen-fixing bacteria during the composting of sewage sludge

This study investigated the effects of garbage enzyme (GE), pelelith (PL), and biochar (BC) on nitrogen (N) conservation, nitrogenase (Nase) and N-fixing bacteria during the composting of sewage sludge. Results showed that the addition of GE, PL, and BC reduced NH₃ emissions by 40.9%, 29.3%, and 67.4%, and increased the NO₃-N contents of the end compost by 161.4, 88.2, and 105.8% relative to control, respectively, thus increasing the TN content. Three additives improved Nase, cellulase, and fluorescein diacetate hydrolase (FDA) activities and the abundances of nifH gene, and the largest increase was BC, followed by PL and GE. In addition, the additives also markedly influenced the succession of N-fixing bacteria, and significantly increased the abundance of Proteobacteria during the whole process. The BC and PL additions strengthened the sensitivity of N-fixing bacteria to environmental variables, and FDA, TN, moisture content, and NO₃-N significantly affected the N-fixing bacteria at genus level.

Integrated application effects of biochar and plant residue on ammonia loss, heavy metal immobilization, and estrogen dissipation during the composting of poultry manure

Inadequate handling of poultry manure can cause significant releases of NH₃, heavy metals, and estrogen, thereby impairing environmental quality. This study was a composting experiment involving the combination of poultry manure with plant residues (corn stalks, mushroom residues, and vegetable straw), as well as with either wheat stalk biochar (WB) or rice husk biochar (RB). The integrated effects of plant residues and biochar on NH₃ loss, heavy metal (Cu, Zn, As, and Cd) stabilization, and 17β-estradiol (E2) dissipation were investigated during composting. The poultry manure co-composted with corn straw and mushroom residue showed the highest potential for E2 degradation. Biochar enhanced E2 dissipation and decreased estrogenic activity in all treatments, with RB showing a stronger effect than WB. Both biochars decreased microbial diversity and increased bacterial groups related to E2 and organic matter degradation·NH₃ emission was reduced by 50-82% with 15% WB and 86-97% with 15% RB. The extractable fraction of As was reduced by 0-53% with WB and 50-84% with RB, while that of Cd was reduced by 5-28% for WB and 25-41% for RB in poultry manure compost. However, biochar showed little effect on Cu and Zn. Biochar appears to have a promotional effect and enhances the microbial degradation of E2. Specifically, the integration of corn stalks, mushroom residues, and RB in poultry manure compost had a positive effect by preventing nitrogen loss while reducing the bioavailability of heavy metals and hormones.

Biochar induced improvement in root system architecture enhances nutrient assimilation by cotton plant seedlings

BACKGROUND

Raising nitrogen use efficiency of crops by improving root system architecture is highly essential not only to reduce costs of agricultural production but also to mitigate climate change. The physiological mechanisms of how biochar affects nitrogen assimilation by crop seedlings have not been well elucidated.

RESULTS

Here, we report changes in root system architecture, activities of the key enzymes involved in nitrogen assimilation, and cytokinin (CTK) at the seedling stage of cotton with reduced urea usage and biochar application at different soil layers (0-10 cm and 10-20 cm). Active root absorption area, fresh weight, and nitrogen agronomic efficiency increased significantly when urea usage was reduced by 25% and biochar was applied in the surface soil layer. Glutamine oxoglutarate amino transferase (GOGAT) activity was closely related to the application depth of urea/biochar, and it increased when urea/biochar was applied in the 0-10 cm layer. Glutamic-pyruvic transaminase activity (GPT) increased significantly as well. Nitrate reductase (NR) activity was stimulated by CTK in the very fine roots but inhibited in the fine roots. In addition, AMT1;1, gdh3, and gdh2 were significantly up-regulated in the very fine roots when urea usage was reduced by 25% and biochar was applied.

CONCLUSION

Nitrogen assimilation efficiency was significantly affected when urea usage was reduced by 25% and biochar was applied in the surface soil layer at the seedling stage of cotton. The co-expression of gdh3 and gdh2 in the fine roots increased nitrogen agronomic efficiency. The synergistic expression of the ammonium transporter gene and gdh3 suggests that biochar may be beneficial to amino acid metabolism.

Straw Mulching and Nitrogen Fertilization Affect Diazotroph Communities in Wheat Rhizosphere

Diazotrophs that carry out the biological fixation of atmospheric dinitrogen (N₂) replenish biologically available nitrogen (N) in soil and are influenced by the input of inorganic and organic substrates. To date, little is known about the effects of combined organic substrate addition and N fertilization on the diazotroph community composition and structure in purple soils. We investigated the effects of N fertilization and straw mulching on diazotroph communities by quantifying and sequencing the nifH gene in wheat rhizosphere. The abundance and richness of diazotrophs were greater the higher the fertilization level in the mulched treatments, whereas in the nonmulched treatments (NSMs), richness was lowest with the highest N fertilization level. The abundance and α-diversity of diazotrophs correlated with most of the soil properties but not with pH. At the genus level, the relative abundances of Azospirillum, Bacillus, and Geobacter were higher in the NSMs and those of Pseudacidovorax, Skermanella, Azospira, Paraburkholderia, Azotobacter, Desulfovibrio, Klebsiella, and Pelomonas in the mulched treatments. The differences in community composition between the mulched and the NSMs were associated with differences in soil temperature and soil organic carbon and available potassium contents and C:N ratio. Overall, straw mulching and N fertilization were associated with changes in diazotroph community composition and higher abundance of nifH gene in alkaline purple soils.

Oxytetracycline stress reconstruct the core microbial community related to nitrogen transformation during composting

This study investigated oxytetracycline (OTC) effects on nitrogen (N) transformation and bacterial community diversity during chicken manure composting. The addition of OTC inhibited nitrifying bacteria, resulted in a decrease in the transformation of NH₄⁺-N to NO₃^--N during composting, and affected in the order T3 (32.76%) > T2 (28.76%) > T1 (17.02%) > CK. The OTC could act as an inhibitor against core microbial growth, leading to a delay effect during composting. 16S rRNA sequencing was employed for the functional prediction, and results indicated the bacterial community related to N transformation reconstructed under OTC stress. The core microorganisms were changed after OTC addition, with the emergence of Bacillus and Thermobifida, which could inhibit the N transformation by network analysis. Therefore, core microorganisms could be regulated to reduce the negative of OTC impacts on N transformation and thus reduce N loss during composting.
