Biofilm processes in biologically active carbon water purification

Synthetic greywater treatment using a scalable granular activated carbon bioelectrochemical reactor

Greywater reuse has emerged as a promising solution for addressing water shortages. However, greywater needs treatment before reuse to meet the required water quality standards. Conventional wastewater treatment technologies are unsuitable for recreating highly decentralized domestic greywater. This study evaluated bioelectrochemical reactors (BERs) with granular activated carbon (GAC) as a sustainable alternative for developing decentralized and low-cost biological treatment systems. BERs using GAC as the anode material and conventional GAC biofilters (BFs) for synthetic greywater treatment were operated in batch mode for 110 days in two stages: (i) with polarized anodes at -150 mV vs. Ag/AgCl and (ii) as a microbial fuel cell with an external resistance of 1 kΩ. Anode polarization produced an electrosorption effect, increasing the ion removal of the BERs. Power production during the operation and cyclic voltammetry tests of the extracted granules revealed electrochemically active biofilm development on the BERs. Although low power density (0.193 ± 0.052 µW m-3) was observed in BERs, they showed a similar performance in sCOD removal (BER = 91.6-89.6 %; BF = 96.2-93.2 %) and turbidity removal (BER = 81-82 %; BF = 30-62 %) to BFs that used 50 % aeration. Additionally, scanning electron microscopy of sampled granules showed higher biomass formation in BER granules than in BF granules, suggesting a higher contribution of sessile (vs. planktonic) cells to the treatment. Thus, the results highlight the synergistic removal effect of the GAC-based BER. The scalable design presented in this study represents a proof-of-concept for developing BERs to use in decentralized greywater treatment systems.

Antibiotics removal and antimicrobial resistance control by ozone/peroxymonosulfate-biological activated carbon: A novel treatment process

Biological activated carbon (BAC) is one of the important treatment processes in wastewater and advanced water treatment. However, the BAC process has been reported to have antimicrobial resistance (AMR) risks. In this study, a new BAC-related treatment process was developed to reduce AMR caused by BAC treatment: ozone/peroxymonosulfate-BAC (O3/PMS-BAC). The O3/PMS-BAC showed better treatment performance on the targeted five antibiotics and dissolved organic matter removal than O3-BAC and BAC treatments. The O3/PMS-BAC process had better control over the AMR than the O3-BAC and BAC processes. Specifically, the amount of targeted antibiotic-resistant bacteria in the effluent and biofilm of O3/PMS-BAC was only 0.01-0.03 and 0.11-0.26 times that of the BAC process, respectively. Additionally, the O3/PMS-BAC process removed 1.76 %-62.83 % and 38.14 %-99.27 % more of the targeted ARGs in the effluent and biofilm than the BAC process. The total relative abundance of the targeted 12 ARGs in the O3/PMS-BAC effluent was decreased by 86 % compared to the effluent after BAC treatment. In addition, Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes were probably the main hosts for transmitting ARGs in this study, and their relative abundance decreased by 9.6 % and 6.0 % in the effluent of the O3/PMS-BAC treatment compared to that in BAC treatment. The relationship analysis revealed that controlling antibiotic discharge was crucial for managing AMR, as antibiotics were closely related to both ARGs and bacteria associated with their emergence. The results showed that the newly developed treatment process could reduce AMR caused by BAC treatment while ensuring effluent quality. Therefore, O3/PMS-BAC is a promising alternative to BAC treatment for future applications.

Biodegradation kinetics of organic micropollutants in biofilters for advanced wastewater treatment - Impact of operational conditions and biomass origin on removal

Biofiltration processes are often part of advanced wastewater treatment (aWWT) technologies for the removal of organic micropollutants (OMP) from conventional wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluents. Although biological effects are not always the main focus of these technologies (e.g. filtration through granular activated carbon), they have been shown to contribute significantly to total OMP removal. While OMP biodegradation kinetics in conventional biological wastewater treatment are well researched, no systematic comparison to biomass from aWWT is available. This biomass faces different growth conditions and higher OMP concentrations relative to the background organic matter. Adaptation to these conditions could be possible and could lead to faster OMP biodegradation kinetics, which would show in a larger pseudo first-order biodegradation kinetic constant kbiol. In this work, kbiol values for biomass obtained from aWWT biofilters were determined by evaluating OMP removals measured in lab-scale biofilters using a mechanistic model of the experimental setup. A comparison to kbiol values from literature for conventional wastewater treatment (with nutrient removal) revealed similar OMP biodegradation kinetics without any advantages of biomass from aWWT. A conceptual evaluation of influencing factors on OMP removal in biofilters showed that operational parameters (such as the biomass concentration or the empty bed contact time) and the affinity of OMPs to adsorb on biomass have a significant additional effect on biological OMP removal. Therefore, kbiol values alone are not sufficient to estimate biological OMP removal in biofilters and further information about the system is required.

Comparing the adsorption of micropollutants on activated carbon from anaerobically stored, organics-depleted, and nitrified urine

Separate collection and treatment of urine optimizes nutrient recovery and enhances micropollutant removal from municipal wastewater. One typical urine treatment train includes nutrient recovery in three biological processes: anaerobic storage, followed by aerobic organics degradation concurrently with nitrification. These are usually followed by activated carbon adsorption to remove micropollutants. However, removing micropollutants prior to nitrification would protect nitrifiers from potential inhibition by pharmaceuticals. In addition, combining simplified biological treatment with activated carbon adsorption could offer a cheap and robust process for removing micropollutants where nutrient recovery is not the first priority, as a partial loss of ammonia occurs without nitrification. In this study, we investigated whether activated carbon adsorption could also take place between the three biological treatment steps. We tested the effectiveness of micropollutant removal with activated carbon after each biological treatment step by conducting experiments with anaerobically stored urine, organics-depleted urine, and nitrified urine. The urine solutions were spiked with 19 pharmaceuticals: amisulpride, atenolol, atenolol acid, candesartan, carbamazepine, citalopram, clarithromycin, darunavir, diclofenac, emtricitabine, fexofenadine, hydrochlorothiazide, irbesartan, lidocaine, metoprolol, N4-acetylsulfamethoxazole, sulfamethoxazole, trimethoprim, venlafaxine, and two artificial sweeteners, acesulfame and sucralose. Batch experiments were conducted with powdered activated carbon (PAC) to determine how much activated carbon achieve which degree of micropollutant removal and how organics, pH, and speciation change from ammonium to nitrate influence adsorption. Micropollutant removal was also tested in granular activated carbon (GAC) columns, which is the preferred technology for micropollutant removal from urine. The carbon usage rates (CUR) per person were lower for all urine solutions than for municipal wastewater. The results showed that organics depletion would be needed when micropollutant removal was the sole aim of urine treatment, as the degradation of easily biodegradable organics prevented clogging of GAC columns. However, CUR did hardly improve with organics-depleted urine compared to stored urine. The lowest CUR was achieved with nitrified urine. This resulted from the additional organics removal during nitrification and not the lower pH or the partial conversion of ammonium to nitrate. In addition, we showed that the relative pharmaceutical removal in all solutions was independent of the initial pharmaceutical concentration unless the background organics matrix changed considerably. We conclude that removal of micropollutants in GAC columns from organics-depleted urine can be performed without clogging, but with the drawback of a higher carbon usage compared to removal from nitrified urine.

Effects of running time on biological activated carbon filters: water purification performance and microbial community evolution

Ozone-biologically activated carbon (BAC) filtration is an advanced treatment process that can be applied to remove recalcitrant organic micro-pollutants in drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs). In this study, we continuously monitored a new and an old BAC filter in a DWTP for 1 year to compare their water purification performance and microbial community evolution. The results revealed that, compared with the new filter, the use of the old BAC filter facilitated a slightly lower rate of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) removal. In the case of the new BAC filter, we recorded general increases in the biomass and microbial diversity of the biofilm with a prolongation of operating time, with the biomass stabilizing after 7 months. For both new and old BAC filters, Proteobacteria and Acidobacteria were the dominant bacterial phyla. At the genus level, the microbial community gradually shifted over the course of operation from a predominance of Herminiimonas and Hydrogenophaga to one predominated by Bradyrhizbium, Bryobacter, Hyphomicrobium, and Pedomicrobium, with Bradyrhizobium being established as the most abundant genus in the old BAC filter. Regarding spatial distribution, we detected reductions in the biomass and number of operational taxonomic units with increasing biofilm depth, whereas there was a corresponding increase in microbial diversity. However, compared with the effects of time, the influence of depth on the composition of the biofilm microbial community was considerably smaller. Furthermore, co-occurrence network analysis revealed that the microbial community network of the new filter after 11 months of operation was the most tightly connected, although its modular coefficient was the lowest of those assessed. We speculate that the positive and negative interactions within the network may be attributable to symbiotic or competitive relationships among species. Moreover, there may have been a significant negative interaction between SWB02 and Acidovorax, plausibly associated with a competition for substrates.

Evaluation of bottled drinking water and occurrence of multidrug-resistance and biofilm producing bacteria in Nepal

Health consequences arising from unsafe drinking water and water insecurity lead to increased reliance on usage of bottled water. Biofilm-producing antibiotic-resistant bacteria in bottled water may pose a risk to public health. This study aims to assess the quality of bottled drinking water with a focus on biofilm-producing and drug-resistant coliform. We analyzed 60 bottled water samples of 30 different brands purchased from Kathmandu for physicochemical and microbial analysis. The parameters pH, iron, total coliform count, Escherichia coli count, and fecal coliform count exceeded National Drinking Water Quality Standards, 2022 in 30.00%, 16.67%, 66.67%, 23.33%, and 16.67% of samples, respectively. Water quality index measurement showed 36.67% and 6.67% of bottled water samples were categorized as grade A and grade B indicating excellent and good water quality, respectively. However, 56.67% of bottled water samples fall under grade E meaning unsuitable for drinking. Among 14 coliform isolates, 85.71% and 14.29% were identified as E. coli and Klebsiella spp, respectively. The antibiotic susceptibility testing revealed that 28.57% of the isolates were multidrug-resistant and Gentamicin resistant isolates comprised 71.43%. However, none of the isolates were carbapenem (meropenem) resistant. In this study, 42.87% of the isolates were found biofilm producers with 14.29% each of strong, moderate, and weak biofilm producers. The genetic potential of biofilm-producing capacity of the isolates was assessed by Polymerase Chain Reaction amplification of bcsA and csgD genes. Our results showed that 66.67% and 50.00% of the isolates harbored bcsA and csgD genes, respectively. This study highlights potential public health hazards associated with the consumption of bottled water containing biofilm-producing and drug-resistant bacteria in Nepal.

Nano manganese dioxide coupling carbon source preloading granular activated carbon biofilter enhancing biofilm formation and pollutant removal

The formation of stable and mature biofilms affects the efficient and stable removal of ammonium by biological activated carbon (BAC). In this study, the new granular activated carbon (GAC) was preloaded with the carbon source (glucose and sucrose) and nano manganese dioxide (nMnO2) before using. Then tests were performed to determine whether substrate preloading promoted ammonium removal. The ammonium removal treated by nMnO2 coupled with sucrose-loaded BAC reached 49.1 ± 2.5%, which was 1.7 times higher than that by the nonloaded BAC 28.2 ± 1.9%). The biomass on the substrate-loaded BAC reached 5.83 × 106-1.22 × 107 cells/g DW GAC on Day 7, which was 4.6-9.5 times higher than the value of the nonloaded BAC (1.28 × 106 cells/g DW GAC). The amount of extracellular polymer (i.e., protein) on nMnO2 coupled to sucrose-loaded BAC was promoted significantly. Flavobacterium (0.7%-11%), Burkholderiaceae (13%-20%) and Aquabacterium (30%-67%) were the dominant functional bacteria on the substrate-loaded BAC, which were conducive to the nitrification or denitrification process. The results indicated that loading nMnO2 and/or a carbon source accelerated the formation of biofilms on BAC and ammonium removal. Additionally, the ammonium removal treated by nMnO2 coupled with sucrose-loaded BAC was contributed by microbial degradation (56.0 ± 2.5%), biofilm adsorption (38.7 ± 2.1%) and GAC adsorption (5.3 ± 0.3%), suggesting a major role of microbial degradation.

Recent advances in microbial engineering approaches for wastewater treatment: a review

In the present era of global climate change, the scarcity of potable water is increasing both due to natural and anthropogenic causes. Water is the elixir of life, and its usage has risen significantly due to escalating economic activities, widespread urbanization, and industrialization. The increasing water scarcity and rising contamination have compelled, scientists and researchers, to adopt feasible and sustainable wastewater treatment methods in meeting the growing demand for freshwater. Presently, various waste treatment technologies are adopted across the globe, such as physical, chemical, and biological treatment processes. There is a need to replace these technologies with sustainable and green technology that encourages the use of microorganisms since they have proven to be more effective in water treatment processes. The present review article is focused on demonstrating how effectively various microbes can be used in wastewater treatment to achieve environmental sustainability and economic feasibility. The microbial consortium used for water treatment offers many advantages over pure culture. There is an urgent need to develop hybrid treatment technology for the effective remediation of various organic and inorganic pollutants from wastewater.

Integrating biological ion exchange with biological activated carbon treatment for drinking water: A novel approach for NOM removal, trihalomethane formation potential, and biological stability

Ion exchange resins (IEX) are used in drinking water utilities to remove natural organic matter (NOM) from surface water; however, the disposal of used brine can be a major drawback. Recently, biological ion exchange (BIEX) has been proposed as an alternative to biological activated carbon (BAC) for removing natural organic matter (NOM). The present study is, to the best of our knowledge, the first attempt to use a hybrid BIEX and BAC (BIEX+BAC) system for drinking water treatment. The removal of NOM, assimilable organic carbon, and trihalomethane formation potential was investigated by operating four columns comprising IEX, BIEX, BAC, and BIEX+BAC with 18,000 bed volumes. The BIEX+BAC system was the most effective at removing dissolved organic carbon (59.9%). Based on fluorescence excitation-emission matrix spectroscopy, the BIEX+BAC column showed the maximum removal rates in all peak regions of T1, T2, and A. Using liquid chromatography-organic carbon detection, resin-containing columns were found to effectively remove humic substances, which are the principal precursors of trihalomethanes. The lowest potential for trihalomethane formation was observed in BIEX+BAC. BIEX+BAC also had the highest assimilable organic carbon removal efficiency (61.2%) followed by BIEX (52.3%), BAC (49.5%), and IEX (47.1%). The BIEX+BAC hybrid was found to be the most effective method for removing NOM fractions and reducing the formation of disinfection byproducts.

Carbon isotope effects in the sorption of chlorinated ethenes on biochar and activated carbon

As an alternative to activated carbon, biochar is a promising, environmentally friendly sorbent that can be used to remove organic groundwater pollutants, such as chlorinated ethenes (CEs). Stable isotope fractionation in biofilters is used to quantify pollutant degradation and to distinguish degradation from pollutant sorption on e.g. biochar. However, the sorption of CEs on biochar, and the potential abiotic fractionation processes remain to be tested. The sorption process of CEs and ethene on activated carbon and biochar was investigated with regard to the isotope effects for the differentiation from microbial degradation processes. Results from physical and chemical characterization of biochar indicated that biochar feedstock and pyrolysis conditions determined sorption performance depending on the surface chemistry and the pore size distribution of the coarse sorbent particles. The sorption capacity of the activated carbon was significantly higher with highly chlorinated ethenes, but similar to the biochars with low chlorination. Apparent carbon isotope fractionation factors (ε) of +0.1 to -4.4 ‰ were found above measurement uncertainties of GC/IRMS. The extent of isotope enrichment of the 13C bearing isotopologues in the residual aqueous phase (ε < 0) was characteristic for individual pairs of pollutant and sorbent material and could be related to pore-filling processes limited by the micropore size distribution of sorbent materials and the chemical properties of sorbed pollutants. Especially the large isotope fractionation during the sorption of ethene led to the assumption that diffusion processes within the pore matrix of the sorbent particles contributed to the observed isotope effects, but should still be considered a property of sorption. Concluding on the results indicated that sorption processes can have a significant contribution to carbon isotope fractionation in CEs and ethene. These should not be neglected in the evaluation of biofilters for groundwater purification, in which CEs are simultaneously degraded by microbes.

Biological Oxygen-dosed Activated Carbon (BODAC) filters - A bioprocess for ultrapure water production removing organics, nutrients and micropollutants

Biological oxygen-dosed activated carbon (BODAC) filters in an Ultrapure water plant were demonstrated to have the potential to further treat secondary wastewater treatment effluent. The BODAC filters were operated for 11 years without carbon regeneration or replacement, while still functioning as pre-treatment step to reverse osmosis (RO) membranes by actively removing organic micropollutants (OMPs) and foulants. In this study, the removal of nutrients and 13 OMPs from secondary wastewater treatment effluent was investigated for 2 years and simultaneously, the granules' characterization and microbial community analysis were conducted to gain insights behind the stable long-term operation of the BODAC filters. The results showed that the BODAC granules' surface area was reduced by ∼70 % of what is in virgin carbon granules and covered by biofilm and inorganic depositions. The BODAC filters reduced the concentration of soluble organics, mainly proteins, performed as an effective nitrification system, and almost completely removed manganese. During the 2 years of observation, the filters consistently removed some OMPs such as hydrochlorothiazide, metoprolol, sotalol, and trimethoprim by at least 70 %. Finally, through microbial community analysis, we found that nitrifying and manganese-oxidizing bacteria were detected in high relative abundance on BODAC granules, supporting BODAC performance in removing OMPs and manganese as well as converting nitrogenous species in the water.

Rhodamine B dye degradation using used face masks-derived carbon coupled with peroxymonosulfate

Catalytic carbon materials from used face masks (UFM) activated by peroxymonosulfate (PMS) were developed for the degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) dye in aqueous solution. The UFM-derived carbon (UFMC) catalyst had a relatively large surface area as well as active functional groups and promoted the generation of singlet ¹O₂ and radicals from PMS, giving a high RhB degradation performance (98.1% after 3 h) in the presence of 3 mM PMS. The UFMC could degrade only 13.7% at a minimal RhB dose of 10^-5 M. The principal reactive oxygen species of sulphate (SO₄^•), hydroxyl radicals (^•OH), and singlet ¹O₂ were discovered using electron paramagnetic resonance and radical scavenger studies. Finally, a toxicological plant and bacterial study was performed to demonstrate the potential non-toxicity of the degraded RhB water sample.

Insight into the temporal dynamics of microbial succession and ecology mechanisms in biological activated carbon tanks

Biological activated carbon (BAC) has long been applied in China to guarantee water quality and to achieve drinking water regulations. However, a knowledge gap remains regarding the temporal dynamics of microbial communities, particularly microbe-based assembly and co-occurrence patterns. Accordingly, this study investigated the evolution of BAC microbial communities using a pilot-scale system and examined by multivariate ecological combined with high-throughput Illumina sequencing and statistical methods. The results showed that BAC microbial diversity reached its peak in 2 years and declined thereafter. Microbial communities composition was accompanied by significant temporal evolution in the BAC biofilm. Deterministic processes gained in importance along with time, especially homogeneous selection which contributed 59.09 %-75.63 % to the community assembly in 8-yr, 9-yr, and 10-yr BAC. According to co-occurrence network analysis, microbial networks have more unstable structures over time, as evidenced by higher modularity, heightened connectivity, and fewer keystones. Moreover, the interaction between microbial taxa tended to have a higher proportion of competitive relationships during the operation of the BAC tank, ranging from 13.51 % to 76.35 %. Based on these dynamic ecological processes, microbial community succession in BAC biofilm might undergo four phases: community establishment (Years 0-2); community stability (Years 2-5); community quasi-degradation (Years 5-8); community degradation (Years 8-10). The performance of BAC was greatly influenced by community development, and contaminant removal gradually decreased as community succession proceeded. These results add to our knowledge of microbial ecology and provide the basis for further research into microbial communities' regulation strategies in BAC tanks.

Impact of biological activated carbon filtration and backwashing on the behaviour of PFASs in drinking water treatment plants

PFASs are present in surface water, tap water and even commercial drinking water and pose a risk to human health. In this study, the treatment efficiency of 14 PFASs was studied in a large drinking water treatment plant (DWTP) using Taihu Lake as the source, and it was found that the ozone/biological activated carbon (O₃-BAC) process was the most effective process for the removal of PFASs in DWTPs. For the O₃-BAC process, there were differences in the removal of PFASs by BACs (1,4,7,13 years) of different ages. The sterilization experiments revealed that for GAC, its physical adsorption capacity reached saturation after one year, while for BAC with mature biofilms, biosorption was the main mechanism for the removal of PFASs. The abundance of Alphaproteobacteria and Gammaproteobacteria in biofilms was positively correlated with the age of the BAC. The microbial community with higher abundance is beneficial to the biodegradation of organic matter and thus provides more active sites for the adsorption of PFASs. PFASs can leak in the early stage of filtration after backwashing, so it is necessary to pay close attention to the influent and effluent concentrations of PFASs during biofilm maturation after backwashing.

Microbial dynamics and bioreactor performance are interlinked with organic matter removal from wastewater treatment plant effluent

Optimizing bioreactor performance for organic matter removal can achieve sustainable and energy-efficient micropollutant removal in subsequent tertiary treatment. Bioreactor performance heavily depends on its resident microbial community; hence, a deeper understanding of community dynamics is essential. The microbial communities of three different bioreactors (biological activated carbon, moving bed biofilm reactor, sand filter), used for organic matter removal from wastewater treatment effluent, were characterized by 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequence analysis. An interdependency between bioreactor performance and microbial community profile was observed. Overall, Proteobacteria was the most predominant phylum, and Comamonadaceae was the most predominant family in all bioreactors. The relative abundance of the genus Roseococcus was positively correlated with organic matter removal. A generalized Lotka-Volterra (gLV) model was established to understand the interactions in the microbial community. By identifying microbial dynamics and their role in bioreactors, a strategy can be developed to improve bioreactor performance.

Bioinspired Interfacial Spontaneous Growth of ZnO Nanocatalysts onto Recycled Textiles as a Sustainable Approach for Water Purification

Zinc oxide, as a commonly used photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants, typically shows limitations in wastewater treatment, such as aggregation and recycling problems caused by nanoscale dimensions and inappropriate substrates. Anchoring ZnO on substrates is a strategy to obtain stable catalytic performance. Particularly, natural fibers with hollow structures are an attractive alternative for ecological and economical ZnO loading templates, but depositing ZnO onto hollowed fiber surfaces presents a challenge. Here, a straightforward in situ growth method for producing nanostructured zinc oxide on cotton fibers from recycled garments is reported. The modified polydopamine on the fiber surface captures the catalyst required for in situ growth of ZnO and serves as a platform for spontaneous catalytic crystal growth on the fiber surface. The ZnO nanocrystals are uniformly dispersed on the outer and inner walls of cotton fibers, demonstrating excellent durability in wastewater treatments. Moreover, the photocatalytic performance of functional fibers is optimized by doping Ag nanoparticles to improve degradation efficiency. This can extend the prospect of further applications of developed ZnO/fibers in optoelectronics, spintronics, and provide inspiration for recycling and upgrading of used garments.

Review: Current understanding on biological filtration for the removal of microcystins

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) have become a global problem not only in aquatic habitats but also in public health and safety due to the production of cyanotoxins as their secondary metabolites. Among the various identified cyanotoxin groups, microcystins (MCs) are one of the most prevalent cyanotoxin detected during HABs. Different strategies including advanced physical and chemical treatment processes have been developed to mitigate the threat of cyanotoxins in water utilities, but these have revealed certain limitations in terms of high operational costs, low removal efficacy, and harmful by-products formation. Recently, biological filtration systems (BFS) have gained attention for safe drinking water production as they can treat various natural organic matter (NOM) and emerging contaminants through a highly efficient and environmentally sustainable process. However, limited attention has been given to understand the current research progress, research challenges, and knowledge gaps for the successful implementation of BFS for MC removal. Therefore, in this review, currently identified MC biodegradation pathways and MC-degrading microorganisms with their degradation rates are summarized, which may be pivotal for studying bioaugmented BFS to enhance the MC removal during HABs. Moreover, both laboratory and field studies on BFS for MC removal are reviewed, followed by a discussion of current challenges and future research needs for the practical application of BFS.

Microbial communities and processes in biofilters for post-treatment of ozonated wastewater treatment plant effluent

Ozonation is an established solution for organic micropollutant (OMP) abatement in tertiary wastewater treatment. Biofiltration is the most common process for the biological post-treatment step, which is generally required to remove undesired oxidation products from the reaction of ozone with water matrix compounds. This study comparatively investigates the effect of filter media on the removal of organic contaminants and on biofilm properties for biologically activated carbon (BAC) and anthracite biofilters. Biofilms were analysed in two pilot-scale filters that have been operated for >50,000 bed volumes as post-treatment for ozonated wastewater treatment plant effluent. In parallel, the removal performance of bulk organics and OMP, including differentiation of adsorption and biotransformation through sodium azide inhibition, were carried out in bench-scale filter columns filled with material from the pilot filters. The use of BAC instead of anthracite resulted in an improved removal of organic bulk parameters, dissolved oxygen, and OMP. The OMP removal observed in the BAC filter but not in the anthracite filter was based on adsorption for most of the investigated compounds. For valsartan, however, biotransformation was found to be the dominant pathway, indicating that conditions for biotransformation of certain OMP are better on BAC than on anthracite. Adenosine triphosphate analyses in the media-attached biofilms of the pilot filters showed that biomass concentrations in the BAC filter were significantly higher than in the anthracite filter. The microbial communities (16S rRNA gene sequencing) appeared to be similar with respect to the types of organisms occurring on both filter materials. Alpha diversity also exhibited little variation between filter media. Beta diversity analysis, however, revealed that filter media and bed depth substantially influenced the biofilm composition. In practice, the impact of filter media on biofilm properties and biotransformation processes should be considered for the design of biofilters.

Effects of biological activated carbon filter running time on disinfection by-product precursor removal

Biological activated carbon (BAC) filtration is usually considered to be able to decrease formation potentials (FPs) of disinfection by-products (DBPs) in drinking water treatment plant (DWTP). However, BAC filters with long running time may release microbial metabolites to effluents and therefore increase FPs of nitrogenous DBPs with high toxicity. To verify this hypothesis, this study continuously tracked BAC filters in a DWTP for one year, and assessed effects of old (running time 8-9 years) and new (running time 0-13 months) BAC filters on FPs of 15 regulated and unregulated DBPs. Results revealed that dissolved organic carbon (DOC) removal was slightly higher in the new BAC than the old one. All fluorescent components of dissolved organic matter evidently declined after new BAC filtration, but fulvic acid-like and soluble microbial product-like substances increased after old BAC filtration, which could be caused by microbial leakage. Correspondingly, new BAC filter generally removed more DBP FPs than the old one. 46.5% HAA₇ FPs from chlorination and 44.3% THM₄ FPs from chloramination were removed by new BAC filter. However, some DBP FPs, especially HAN FPs, were poorly removed or even increased by the old BAC filter. Proteobacteria could be a main contributor for DBP precursor removal in BAC filters. Herminiimonas, most abundant genera in new BAC filter, may explain its better DOC and UV₂₅₄ removal performance and lower DBP FPs, while Bradyrhizobium, most abundant genera in old BAC filter, might produce more extracellular polymeric substances and therefore increased N-DBP FPs in old BAC effluent. This study provided insight into variations of DBP FPs and microbial communities in the new and old BAC filters, and will be helpful for the optimization of DWTP design and operation for public health.

Treatment of faecal sludge and sewage effluent by pinewood biochar to reduce wastewater bacteria and inorganic contaminants leaching

Biochar is a valuable treatment option for faecal sludge management (FSM). However, the sanitation application rates of biochar in FSM are not well established. There is also a gap in knowledge about the effect of actual raw sewage effluent and sludge on organic and inorganic contaminants migration of biochar treated soil. This study investigated the concentration and migration rates of N, P, E. coli and faecal coliform bacteria through different soil-bed biochar column treatments leached with raw faecal sludge and sewage effluent. Forty-four soil-bed leaching columns with pinewood biochar rates at 5, 10 and 20 t/ha were set at the Bloemspruit wastewater plant, South Africa. The pinewood biochar used had a pH of 10.21, total C composition of 92%, surface area of 517 m²/g, and a pore size of 1.7 nm. It was found that the 20 t biochar per ha treatment with faecal sludge increased water retention (flows of 33 mm/h. at 0 t/ha compared to 0.8 mm/h. at 20 t/ha) and leachates purification. High detections were observed for faecal coliforms and E.coli above 4331 CFU/100 mL from the effluent and faecal sludge in soils without biochar. Detection of E.coli at 20 t/ha decreased to 1 CFU/100 mL while the faecal coliforms still had counts above 10 CFU/ 100 mL. The results showed a decreasing rate of nitrates, phosphates, zinc and copper with an increasing biochar application rate. Pinewood biochar showed significant removal efficiencies of bacteria (between 89 and 98%) and nitrates and phosphates (between 68 and 98%). Significant differences were seen at P < 0.05 between the means of the treatments with and without biochar. The results from the study show that pinewood biochar applied at rates between 5 and 20 t/ha has a high organic and inorganic contaminants reduction potential for FSM.

Digging deep into a GAC filter - Temporal and spatial profiling of adsorbed organic micropollutants

A large pilot-scale granular activated carbon (GAC) filter was operated downstream in a full-scale wastewater treatment plant to remove organic micropollutants. To describe the spatial and temporal developments of micropollutant adsorption profiles in the GAC filter, micropollutants were extracted from GAC media taken at various filter depths and number of treated bed volumes. At a low number of treated bed volumes (2600 BVs), most micropollutants were adsorbed in the top layers of the filter. At increasing number of treated bed volumes (7300-15,500 BVs), the adsorption front for micropollutants progressed through the filter bed at varying rates, with sulfamethoxazole, fluconazole, and PFOS reaching the bottom layer before carbamazepine and other well-adsorbing micropollutants, such as propranolol and citalopram. Higher amounts of adsorbed micropollutants in the bottom layer of the filter bed resulted in decreased removal efficiencies in the treated wastewater. Mass estimations indicated biodegradation for certain micropollutants, such as naproxen, diclofenac, and sulfamethoxazole. A temporary increase in the concentration of the insecticide imidacloprid could be detected in the filter indicating that extraction of adsorbed micropollutants could provide an opportunity for backtracking of loading patterns.

Microbial ecology of biofiltration used for producing safe drinking water

Abstract

Biofiltration is a water purification technology playing a pivotal role in producing safe drinking water. This technology attracts many interests worldwide due to its advantages, such as no addition of chemicals, a low energy input, and a high removal efficiency of organic compounds, undesirable taste and odours, and pathogens. The current review describes the microbial ecology of three biofiltration processes that are routinely used in drinking water treatment plants, i.e. (i) rapid sand filtration (RSF), (ii) granular activated carbon filtration (GACF), and (iii) slow sand filtration (SSF). We summarised and compared the characteristics, removal performance, and corresponding (newly revealed) mechanisms of the three biofiltration processes. Specifically, the microbial ecology of the different biofilter processes and the role of microbial communities in removing nutrients, organic compounds, and pathogens were reviewed. Finally, we highlight the limitations and challenges in the study of biofiltration in drinking water production, and propose future perspectives for obtaining a comprehensive understanding of the microbial ecology of biofiltration, which is needed to promote and optimise its further application.

A review on removal strategies of microorganisms from water environment using nanomaterials and their behavioural characteristics

Significant findings for microbial removal have led to expertise on several kinds of nanomaterials that made new paths for removing various biological contaminants in a variety of water resources in recent years. Furthermore, advancements in multifunctional nanocomposites synthesis pave the enhanced possibility for their use in water treatment system design. The adsorption towards microbial elimination has been reviewed and compared in this review article using four common kinds of nanomaterials: carbon materials, metal oxides, metal/metal oxides, polymeric metal oxide nanocomposites and their most important mechanistic behavior also discussed. We also describe and analyze recent findings on the effects of engineered nanomaterials on microbial communities in natural and artificial environments. Understanding the removal mechanistic strategy is crucial to improving the nanoparticles (NPs) efficiency and increasing their applicability against a variety of bacteria in various environmental conditions. Also, our study focused on their behavioral effects on microbial structure and functionality towards the removal. Future research opportunities connected to the use of nanomaterials in microbial control and inactivation with societal and health implications are also discussed. We also highlight a number of interesting research subjects that might be of futuristic interest to the scientific community.

Can we shape microbial communities to enhance biological activated carbon filter performance?

A new focus on biofiltration has emerged that aims to shape microbial communities to improve treatment efficacy. It is therefore necessary to understand the linkages between microbial community structure and biofilter function. However, the assembly and interaction of microbial communities in biological activated carbon (BAC) filters are unknown. In this study, we selected one coal-based granular activated carbon (GAC), GAC-13, with simultaneously developed micropore and micro-level macropore volume used for a bench-scale BAC column experiment, and compared it with other coal-based GACs and wood-based GAC in terms of the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) removal and microbial community characteristics. The results showed that there was no difference between the DOC removal efficiency of BAC-13 and the other two coal-based BAC filters with high iodine value in the period dominated by adsorption, while the DOC removal efficiency of BAC-13 (64.7±0.6%) was significantly higher than that of other BAC filters (36.3±0.8-54.1±0.4%) with a difference of 0.3-0.7 mg/L in DOC during the steady state. The bacterial communities were strongly assembled by deterministic rather than stochastic factors, where the surface polarity of GAC had a greater effect on the microbial communities than its physical properties. The corresponding co-occurrence network revealed that microbes in the BAC filter may be more cooperative than competitive. The keystone bacterium Hyphomicrobium, which had a relatively low abundance, contributed 0.3-1% more to the most abundant functions and produced 5-21 proteins/(g·GAC) more than the dominant bacterium Sphingobium. The metaproteomic-based approach could provide more accurate information regarding the contributions of different species to metabolic functions. The pore size distribution of GAC was found to be an important factor in determining BAC filter performance; the most important pore sizes were micropores and micro-level macropores (0.2-10 μm and >100 μm in diameter), and the latter impacted the abundance of keystone species. Overall, our findings provide new insights into shaping microbial communities by optimizing pore size structure to improve BAC performance, especially the abundance of keystone species.

Effects and relevant mechanisms of non-antibiotic factors on the horizontal transfer of antibiotic resistance genes in water environments: A review

Antibiotic resistance has created obstacles in the treatment of infectious diseases with antibiotics. The horizontal transfer of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) can exacerbate the dissemination of antibiotic resistance in water environments. In addition to antibiotic selective pressure, multiple non-antibiotic factors can affect the horizontal transfer of ARGs. Herein, we seek to comprehensively review the effects and relevant mechanisms of non-antibiotic factors on the horizontal transfer of ARGs in water environments, especially contaminants from human activities and water treatment processes. Four pathways have been identified to accomplish horizontal gene transfer (HGT), i.e., conjugation, transformation, transduction, and vesiduction. Changes in conjugative frequencies by non-antibiotic factors are mainly related to their concentrations, which conform to hormesis. Relevant mechanisms involve the alteration in cell membrane permeability, reactive oxygen species, SOS response, pilus, and mRNA expression of relevant genes. Transformation induced by extracellular DNA may be more vulnerable to non-antibiotic factors than other pathways. Except bacteriophage infection, the effects of non-antibiotic factors on transduction exhibit many similarities with that of conjugation. Given the secretion of membrane vesicles stimulated by non-antibiotic factors, their effects on vesiduction can be inferred. Furthermore, contaminants from human activities at sub-inhibitory or environmentally relevant concentrations usually promote HGT, resulting in further dissemination of antibiotic resistance. The horizontal transfer of ARGs is difficult to be inhibited by individual water treatment processes (e.g., chlorination, UV treatment, and photocatalysis) unless they attain sufficient intensity. Accordingly, the synergistic application containing two or more water treatment processes is recommended. Overall, we believe this review can elucidate the significance for risk assessments of contaminants from human activities and provide insights into the development of environment-friendly and cost-efficient water treatment processes to inhibit the horizontal transfer of ARGs.

Performance of biological activated carbon (BAC) filtration for the treatment of secondary effluent: A pilot-scale study

In addition to the adsorption capability for organic compounds, granular activated carbon (GAC) can also serve as a good media for the growth of microbial communities in biofilters. Despite its potential, the application of BAC filtration for municipal wastewater treatment has been little addressed in the literature. In this context, this paper aimed to investigate BAC filtration as a post-treatment of anaerobic effluent in pilot scale and its performance in removing organic matter and turbidity. Removal efficiencies during the biofilters run times and along biofilters depth were also evaluated. Three BAC filters were evaluated under different operating conditions of filtration rates (from 13 to 32 m d^-1) and empty bed contact time (EBCT) (from 45 to 112 min) during 170 days. The lowest filtration rate (13 m d^-1) presented the best performance in terms of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) removal (68.2 ± 4.0%), leading to mean DOC effluent concentration of 6.8 ± 0,9 mg L^-1. The BAC reached the stability of biological activity from the 63rd day of operation, however, the adsorption process was still occurring contributing to DOC removal. These DOC removals were higher than those results reported in the literature for BAC filters treating drinking water and municipal wastewater. The DOC removal efficiencies were maintained during the filter run times, showing the robustness of the system even after the interference caused by the backwashing process. BAC filtration was also capable of removing turbidity, with removal efficiencies between 84.5 ± 3.6% and 70.63 ± 6.8% depending on the filtration rate. The results indicated the capability of BAC systems to remove efficiently organic carbon and turbidity from effluents with high organic content, mean of 23.97 (±3.96) mg.L^-1, and also valuable support to determine adequate operating parameters for BAC filters application in secondary effluent treatment, such as filtration rate (13 m d^-1), EBCT (112 min), and detailed backwashing procedures.

Biological activated carbon filter for greywater post-treatment: Long-term TOC removal with adsorption and biodegradation

Biological activated carbon (BAC) filters can be used to remove residual total organic carbon (TOC) from greywater after a membrane bioreactor. The two main TOC removal processes are adsorption to the granular activated carbon (GAC) and biological degradation. Biodegradation leads to the growth of microorganisms in the filter bed, which can lead to increased pressure loss over the filter bed. However, the roles of sorption and biodegradation in long-term TOC removal and how they complement each other are unclear. We monitored TOC removal from greywater in a BAC filter installed following a membrane bioreactor over more than 900 days. Removal performance depended on the operational time of the BAC filter, the influent TOC concentration, and in the upper part of the filter on the empty bed contact time (EBCT). Across the overall filter, the EBCT did not significantly influence TOC removal, showing that the filter was sufficiently large for the range of flow rates observed. Analysis of the long-term data revealed the equal importance of sorption and biodegradation over the whole operation period and the whole filter bed. Most of the TOC was removed in the upper part of the filter, where biodegradation was the dominant mechanism. In the lower part of the filter, sorption capacity remained and allowed high influent TOC concentrations to be buffered. The generous filter design with low average filtration rates ensured long-term TOC removal. The only maintenance needed was backwashing, which was required only after more than 800 days of operation. Backwashing effectively reduced the pressure loss but had no significant influence on the effluent water quality. Our study shows that BAC filters are a suitable post-treatment step for the treatment of greywater with highly variable flow and TOC concentrations.

Reverse osmosis concentrate treatment by microbubble ozonation-biological activated carbon process: Organics removal performance and environmental impact assessment

Reverse osmosis (RO) is being used in many water reclamation facilities to produce high quality water that can be reused for different purposes. As a part of the RO process, a reject stream is produced as the reverse osmosis concentrate (ROC), which contains elevated levels of contaminants compared to the source water. Effective treatment and safe disposal of ROC via cost-effective means is very challenging. This study aims to develop a robust microbubble ozonation-biological process for industrial ROC treatment with a target effluent chemical oxygen demand (COD) lower than 60 mg/L. As compared to macrobubble ozonation, microbubble ozonation exhibited better ozone dissolution and 29% higher COD removal efficiency with the same ozone dosage. Under the optimum operating conditions with ozone dosage of 30 mg/L, ROC natural pH of 8.67 and ozonation duration of 1 h, microbubble ozonation achieved 42% COD removal efficiency while increasing the BOD₅/COD ratio (ratio of biological oxygen demand over 5 days to the corresponding chemical oxygen demand) in ROC from 0.042 to 0.216. A biological activated carbon (BAC) column with an empty bed contact time (EBCT) of 120 min was combined with microbubble ozonation for continuous ROC treatment. Over the 100-day operation, the combined system performed consistent organics removal with an average effluent COD of 45 mg/L. Both LC-OCD data and fluorescence EEM spectra confirmed humic substances were the dominant organic species in ROC. Ozone pre-treatment could achieve significant removal of humic substances in raw ROC. ATP analysis found that ozone pre-treatment enhanced BAC biofilm activity by around 5 folds. 5 min acute toxicity assessment with Aliivibrio fischeri showed 4 times reduction of bioluminescence inhibition in ozone treated ROC. From the environmental point of view, Life cycle assessment (LCA) results demonstrated that Ozone-BAC system had significant environmental burdens on climate change and human toxicity due to the electricity production process. These environmental impacts can be mitigated by optimizing the ozonation process with reduced ozone dosage or utilizing renewable energy sources for electricity generation.

New directions and challenges in engineering biologically-enhanced biochar for biological water treatment

Cost-effective, efficient, and sustainable water treatment solutions utilising existing materials and technology will make it easier for low and middle-income countries to adopt them, improving public health. The ability of biochar to mediate and support microbial degradation of contaminants, combined with its carbon-sequestration potential, has attracted attention in recent years. Biochar is a possible candidate for use in cost-effective and sustainable biological water treatment, especially in agrarian economies with easy access to abundant biomass in the form of crop residues and organic wastes. This review evaluates the scope, potential benefits (economic and environmental) and challenges of sustainable biological water treatment using 'Biologically-Enhanced Biochar' or BEB. We discuss the various processes occurring in BEB systems and demonstrate the urgent need to investigate microbial degradation mechanisms. We highlight the need to correlate biochar properties to biofilm development, which can eventually determine process efficiency. We also demonstrate the various opportunities in adopting BEB as a cheaper and more viable alternative in Low and Middle Income Countries and compare it to the current benchmark, 'Biological Activated Carbon'. We focus on the recent advances in the areas of data science, mathematical modelling and molecular biology to systematically and sustainably design BEB filters, unlike the largely empirical design approaches seen in water treatment. 'Sequential biochar systems' are introduced as specially designed end-of-life techniques to lower the environmental impact of BEB filters and examples of their integration into biological water treatment that can fulfil zero waste criteria for BEBs are given.

Application of the Swimming Pool Backwash Water Recovery System with the Use of Filter Tubes

During the operation of swimming pools, large losses of water from the backwash of swimming pool filters are observed. This water is often discharged into sewers or used to sprinkle sports grounds. The aim of the research was to design and build an installation for purification and recovery of backwash water (BWW). It consists of flocculation, pre-filtration, and ultrafiltration based on filter tubes and ozone disinfection. Backwash water treatment installation contributes to purification and improvement of water quality. The effectiveness of the removal of microbial contamination with the use of the system was over 99%. The high efficiency of removing physicochemical impurities was also achieved. Water turbidity was reduced from 96.9 NTU to 0.13 NTU. After using the system, the oxidability of water decreased from 6.26 mg O₂∙dm⁻³ to 0.4 mg O₂∙dm⁻³. When using the system, a reduction of total organic carbon by 80% was also noticed. After the treatment process, water meets the strict criteria and can be returned to the pool system of water as fresh water with parameters of supply water—directly to the overflow tank. It has been shown that up to 96% of water can be recovered with the technology. The cost comparison showed annual savings of over EUR 9000.

Influence mechanism of filling ratio on solid-phase denitrification with polycaprolactone as biofilm carrier

In this study, three up-flow fixed-bed bioreactors were constructed with three different filling ratios (filling volume/effective volume: 30%, 60% and 90%) of polycaprolactone (PCL). Above 98% of nitrate removal efficiency was achieved with low accumulations of nitrite and ammonium for each filling ratio. Low filling ratio of PCL had extensive folds and pores that favored the attachment and growth of microorganisms; however, excessive biomass restrained nitrate specific reduction rate (NaSRR). The most dominant genera were Comamonas (0.80-57.64%), Stenotrophomonas (2.59-54.39%), Acidovorax (7.32-23.55%), Allorhizobium-Neorhizobium-Pararhizobium-Rhizobium (0.30-19.74%) and Thermomonas (0.12-14.58%). Nitrate reductase (EC 1.7.99.4), nitrite reductase (EC 1.7.2.1) and nitric oxide reductase (EC 1.7.2.5) predicted by PICRUSt2 were abundant in high influent nitrate load (NaL). According to the analysis of carbon balance model, the utilization rate (η) of PCL showed a highly positive correlation with influent NaL, indicating reducing filling ratio or HRT might be an effective measure to save cost for nitrate removal.

Effect of backwashing biologically activated carbon on coagulability of organics in surface water

This study shows if biologically activated carbon (BAC) is backwashed at the correct frequency, a number of benefits can be derived in addition to aiding the subsequent coagulation process. Previous studies have shown that the BAC improves the removal of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) by subsequent coagulation by decreasing non-coagulable dissolved organic carbon (NC-DOC). However, the actual mechanism of such observation or optimising strategies of NC-DOC removal is unknown. The impact of backwashing on BAC reactor performance in terms of NC-DOC removal and microbial community structure was investigated. A laboratory scale BAC column was operated for more than five months with backwashing at once every five days, but in one cycle it was operated without backwashing for 14 days and the effluent collected at different times from the last backwash was subjected to enhanced coagulation (EC). All the effluent of BAC collected at different days depicted better floc forming characteristics than the feed water which is raw surface water. The effluent collected on day three from the last backwash (BAC-3d) contained the least amount (1.64 mg/L) of NC-DOC despite the highest DOC (3.89 mg/L) of all effluents. The coagulant requirement (5 mg-Fe³⁺/mg-DOC) was minimal for BAC-3d effluent among raw water and all other BAC effluent water samples. This is remarkable given the raw water contained 2.76 mg/L of NC-DOC. The microbial community on BAC granules on day three contained a higher abundance of biodegradable organic matter (BOM) removing microorganisms and low abundance of opportunistic pathogens. Similar performance in terms of DOC removal with the backwash was also observed in the continuous operation of other BAC columns. Possible backwash frequency that optimises the BAC/EC and derives many other benefits is proposed. The BAC/EC combination could help solve many emerging issues cost-effectively hence, needs further investigation.

Reclaimed water driven lettuce cultivation in a hydroponic system: the need of micropollutant removal by advanced wastewater treatment

For a novel approach of resource-efficient water reuse, a municipal wastewater treatment plant was extended at pilot scale for advanced wastewater treatment, i.e., ozonation and biological activated carbon filtration, and a hydroponic system for reclaimed water driven lettuce cultivation. The treatment specific wastewater lines with the corresponding lettuce plants, differentiated into roots and shoots, were monitored for priority wastewater micropollutants, i.e., acesulfame (sweetener), caffeine (stimulant), carbamazepine, diclofenac, ibuprofen, sulfamethoxazole with acetyl-sulfamethoxazole (human pharmaceuticals), 1H-benzotriazole, and 4/5-methylbenzotriazole (industrial chemicals). As clearly demonstrated, conventional tertiary treatment could not efficiently clean up wastewater. Removal efficiencies ranged from 3% for carbamazepine to 100% for ibuprofen. The resulting pollution of the hydroponic water lines led to the accumulation of acesulfame, carbamazepine, and diclofenac in lettuce root systems at 32.0, 69.5, and 135 μg kg-1 and in the uptake of acesulfame and carbamazepine into lettuce shoots at 23.4 and 120 μg kg-1 dry weight, respectively. In contrast, both advanced treatment technologies when operating under optimized conditions achieved removal efficiencies of > 90% also for persistent micropollutants. Minimizing the pollution of reclaimed water thus met one relevant need for hydroponic lettuce cultivation.

Visualizing, quantifying, and controlling local hydrodynamic effects on biofilm accumulation in complex flow paths

Complex flow paths (CFPs) are commonly applied in precision equipment to accurately supply controllable fluids with designed structures. However, the presence of biofilms in CFPs causes quite a few unwanted issues, such as bio-erosion, clogging, or even health risks. To date, visualizing and quantifying the interaction between biofilm distribution and local hydrodynamics remains difficult, and the mechanism during the process is unclear. In this paper, the remodeling simulation method (3D industrial computed tomography scanning-inverse modeling-numerical simulation) and 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing were integrated. The results indicated that local hydrodynamic characteristics significantly affected biofilm thicknesses on CFP surfaces (relative differences of 41.3-71.2%), which inversely influenced the local turbulence intensity. The average biofilm thicknesses exhibited a significant quadratic correlation with the near-wall hydraulic shear forces (r > 0.72, p < 0.05), and the biofilm reached a maximum thickness at 0.36-0.45 Pa. On the other hand, the near-wall hydraulic shear forces not only affected microbial community characteristics of biofilms, but they also influenced the number of microorganisms involved, which determined the biofilm accumulation thereafter. The PHYLUM Firmicutes and Proteobacteria were the dominant bacteria during the process. The results obtained in this paper could provide practical conceptions for the targeted control of biofilms and put forward more efficient controlling methods in commonly applied CFP systems.

Presence, behaviour and removal of selected organic micropollutants through drinking water treatment

This paper investigates the occurrence and removal of 60 organic micropollutants (OMPs) including pharmaceuticals, personal care products, pesticides and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in a drinking water treatment plant (DWTP) treating raw water from the Ebro River (NE Spain). The behaviour of the OMPs was evaluated in each treatment: pre-ozonation, flocculation-coagulation-decantation-sand filtration, post-ozonation and granular activated carbon filtration. Thirty-one of the sixty OMPs studied were detected in source water with individual median concentrations below 10 ng L^-1 for all the compounds except for caffeine (64.1 ng L^-1). The highest concentration peaks in the source water were found for caffeine (124.5 ng L^-1), terbuthylazine (52.0 ng L^-1), imidacloprid (30.2 ng L^-1) and paracetamol (25.6 ng L^-1). Of the 31 compounds detected in the source water, 17 were also detected in the finished drinking water. Of these 17 compounds, 10 were PFASs, which indicated that this group of compounds had not been effectively removed throughout the drinking water treatments. The overall removal efficiencies of OMPs in the DWTP ranged from -50.9% to 100%. The most efficient removal technologies were ozonation and granular activated carbon.

Effect of filling ratio and backwash on performance of a continuous-flow SPD reactor packed with PCL as carbon source

In this study, three up-flow fixed-bed bioreactors, named as A, B, and C, packed with polycaprolactone (PCL) under different filling ratios (31%, 62%, and 93%, respectively), were investigated over a long period (96 days). During the stable period, the mean effluent NO 3 - - N concentrations in reactors A, B, and C were 1.35 ± 0.50, 1.07 ± 0.41, and 1.03 ± 0.27 mg/L, respectively, which showed the removal of NO 3 - - N was not closely related to filling ratio (p > 0.05, one-way ANOVA). However, it was found that biomass in reactor A was 2.13 and 5.55 times in B and C, respectively. Excessively thick biofilm refrained the enzymatic hydrolysis of PCL and biofilm's specific denitrification rate (SDNR). Backwash stimulated organic matter release and enabled biofilm to restore its denitrification activity. The maximum cycle of backwash was 6 days for the lowest filling ratio reactor. Additionally, the utilization rates for denitrification were 83.3%, 86.4%, and 60.5% in reactors A, B, and C, respectively, which was higher after backwash than before backwash. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Excessively thick biofilm refrained the enzymatic hydrolysis of PCL. Backwash stimulated organic matter release and enabled biofilm to restore its denitrification activity. The maximum cycle of backwash was 6 days for the lowest filling ratio reactor. A higher utilization rate of PCL for denitrification was observed after backwash.

Tracking 14C-Labeled Organic Micropollutants to Differentiate between Adsorption and Degradation in GAC and Biofilm Processes

Granular activated carbon (GAC) filters can be used to reduce emissions of organic micropollutants via municipal wastewater, but it is still uncertain to which extent biological degradation contributes to their removal in GAC filters. 14C-labeled organic micropollutants were therefore used to distinguish degradation from adsorption in a GAC-filter media with associated biofilm. The rates and extents of biological degradation and adsorption were investigated and compared with other biofilm systems, including a moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) and a sand filter, by monitoring 14C activities in the liquid and gas phases. The microbial cleavage of ibuprofen, naproxen, diclofenac, and mecoprop was confirmed for all biofilms, based on the formation of 14CO2, whereas the degradation of 14C-labeled moieties of sulfamethoxazole and carbamazepine was undetected. Higher degradation rates for diclofenac were observed for the GAC-filter media than for the other biofilms. Degradation of previously adsorbed diclofenac onto GAC could be confirmed by the anaerobic adsorption and subsequent aerobic degradation by the GAC-bound biofilm. This study demonstrates the potential use of 14C-labeled micropollutants to study interactions and determine the relative contributions of adsorption and degradation in GAC-based treatment systems.

Implication on selection and replacement of granular activated carbon used in biologically activated carbon filters through meta-omics analysis

Biologically activated carbon (BAC) filters are widely used in China and worldwide as an essential part of advanced water treatment. However, it is unclear how to properly select the granular activated carbon (GAC) used in BAC filters and to determine when GAC should be replaced. In this study, five BAC filters, each filled with a different coconut- or coal-based GAC with different physicochemical properties, were run continuously for 400 days. The structure and function of the microbial community and the quantity of specific enzymes in the BAC filters were investigated through an integrated metagenomic/metaproteomic analysis. The results indicated that GAC adsorption still played a major role in removing organic matter once the filters reached a steady-state, which was attributed to bioregeneration, and the contribution of adsorption might be relatively greater than that of biodegradation. GAC with strong adsorption capacity and high bioregeneration potential selected bacterial communities more phylogenetically closely-related than others. The iodine value could be used as an indicator of BAC performance in terms of organic matter removal in the initial stage of the filters, which is dominated by adsorption. However, it could not be used to assess performance at a later stage when adsorption and biodegradation occurred simultaneously. Pore-size distribution characteristics could be chosen as a potential better indicator compared with the current adsorption indicators, dually representing the adsorption performance and the microbial activity, and the proportion of important pore-size of GAC that is more suitable for BAC filter is suggested. GAC with strongly polar terminal groups is more conducive to the removal of ammonium-nitrogen.

Development of a schwarzite-based moving bed 3D printed water treatment system for nanoplastic remediation

The impact of micro and nanoplastic debris on our aquatic ecosystem is among the most prominent environmental challenges we face today. In addition, nanoplastics create significant concern for environmentalists because of their toxicity and difficulty in separation and removal. Here we report the development of a 3D printed moving bed water filter (M-3DPWF), which can perform as an efficient nanoplastic scavenger. The enhanced separation of the nanoplastics happens due to the creation of a charged filter material that traps the more surface charged nanoparticles selectively. Synthetic contaminated water from polycarbonate waste has been tested with the filter, and enhanced nanoplastic removal has been achieved. The proposed filtration mechanism of surface-charge based water cleaning is further validated using density function theory (semi-empirical) based simulation. The filter has also shown good structural and mechanical stability in both static and dynamic water conditions. The field suitability of the novel treatment system has also been confirmed using water from various sources, such as sea, river, and pond. Our results suggest that the newly developed water filter can be used for the removal of floating nanoparticles in water as a robust advanced treatment system.

Metagenomic analysis of microbiota and antibiotic resistome in household activated carbon drinking water purifiers

Existing drinking water treatment systems have limited ability to control emerging contaminants such as antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Household activated carbon water purifiers (HWPs) are convenient measures to assure drinking water quality. However, ARGs distribution in HWPs has not been reported. Here, ARGs, mobile genetic elements (MGEs) and bacteria communities were profiled in tap water (TW), filter water (FW) and activated carbon (AC) biofilm from six kinds of HWPs after 80 days operation, using metagenomics. Results showed that the bacteria community diversities in FW and AC were higher than those in TW. A total of 88, 116 and 80 ARG subtypes were detected in TW, AC and FW, respectively. The AC structure was an important factor influencing the bacterial communities and ARG profiles in FW. The network analysis revealed the co-occurrence patterns between ARGs and bacteria. SourceTracker analyses showed AC biofilms were important contributors of microbes (29-79%) and ARGs (17-53%) in FW. Moreover, MGEs e.g. pBBta01, pMKMS02 and pMFLV01 plasmids, and ISMysp3 had significant co-occurrence patterns with ARGs in the AC biofilms. This study helps to understand the actual purification effect of HWPs and provides a theoretical reference for the management and control of ARGs pollution in domestic drinking water.

Effective abatement of 29 pesticides in full-scale advanced treatment processes of drinking water: From concentration to human exposure risk

This study investigated the occurrence and removal of 29 pesticides in 4 drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs) with conventional and advanced treatment processes (i.e., ozonation + biological activated carbon, and ultrafiltration) in Shanghai, China from 2018 to 2019. The concentration levels of target pesticides in raw waters ranged from below the limit of quantification (<LOQ) to 2391.3 ng L^-1, whereas in finished waters significantly decreased to a range of <LOQ to 269 ng L^-1. The application of the advanced treatment process could effectively remove target pesticides. For example, the highest removal of isocarbophos after the advanced treatment process reached 94.6%, whereas its removal after the conventional treatment process was just 42.6%. The estimated daily intake level of target pesticides in finished water, which were pretty lower than acceptable daily intake levels in finished water, could be reduced by 67% if combining the conventional and advanced treatment processes. Although the multiple pesticides in raw waters were effectively removed by advanced treatment process, their synergistic toxic effects induced by the residual pesticides and their degradation by-products on human health deserve further attentions.

Simultaneous adsorption and biodegradation of trichloroethylene occurs in a biochar packed column treating contaminated landfill leachate

Trichloroethylene (TCE) is a human carcinogen that is commonly found in landfill leachate. Contaminated leachate plumes may be intercepted prior to reaching groundwater and treated in situ using permeable reactive barriers (PRB). This study used a packed column system containing herbal pomace and spruce biochar, previously shown to have TCE adsorptive capabilities. Influent containing raw or autoclaved landfill leachate was used to investigate the potential for environmental micro-organisms to establish a TCE-dechlorinating biofilm on the biochar, in order to prolong the operational life span of the system. TCE removal ≥ 99.7 % was observed by both biochars. No dichloroethylene (DCE) isomers were present in the column effluents, but cis-1,2 DCE was adsorbed to the biochar treating raw landfill leachate, indicating that dechlorination was occurring biologically in these columns. Known microbial species that are individually capable of complete dechlorination of TCE to ethene were not detected by 16S rRNA gene sequencing, but several species capable of partial TCE dechlorination (Desulfitobacterium spp., Sulfurospirillium spp. and Desulfuromonas spp) were present in the biofilms of the columns treating raw landfill leachate. These data demonstrate that biochar from waste material may be capable of supporting a dechlorinating biofilm to promote bioremediation of TCE.

Implications of biological activated carbon filters for micropollutant removal in wastewater treatment

Granulated Activated Carbon (GAC) filtration is a common process for advanced wastewater treatment. In such filters, the removal of organic substances results from adsorptive as well as biological processes. This work investigated the potential of biological processes and their influence on GAC-filter performance. During 32 months, the removal of micropollutants,Dissolved Organic Carbon (DOC) and the spectral absorption coefficient was monitored in six GAC-filters. The effects of pre-treatment (cloth- and/or membrane-filtration), EBCT (from 6 - 35 min) and GAC-type were evaluated. Likewise, the impact of the influent´s fluctuations in temperature, flow and concentration (ammonia, nitrate, and soluble reactive phosphorus (sRP)) were analysed. Biological processes were tracked by the frequency of backwashing, oxygen consumption, removal of poorly absorbable micropollutants and production of transformation products. Pre-treatment influenced biofilm growth significantly. Membrane filtration delayed the first backwashing event by 122 d in comparison to cloth-filtration, where the first backwash was conducted after only 21 d. Removal of poorly absorbable substances was observed early on (40 - 50 d). Parallel operation contributed to a better utilisation of the GAC-capacity and the biological removal potential. Influent nitrogen species > 0.5 mg N/L promoted biofilm growth, whereas sRP seemed to have no effect. The developed biofilm and optimal operating conditions led to longer life spans of the GAC-filters, making carbon usage rates comparable to those from PAC applications. The results suggest that biological processes accounted for about 25 - 42% of the totally removed DOC at the end of the operation.

A state-of-the-art review of quinoline degradation and technical bottlenecks

Quinoline is a critical raw material for the dye, metallurgy, pharmaceutical, rubber, and agrochemical industries, and its use poses a serious threat to human health and the ecological environment. Quinoline has carcinogenic, teratogenic and mutagenic effects on the human body through food accumulation. However, due to the steric hindrance of its bicyclic fused structure and its long photooxidation half-life, quinoline is too difficult to decompose naturally. To date, numerous technologies have been used to degrade quinoline, whereas only a few have been reviewed. Therefore, this paper is focused on offering a comprehensive overview of the state of quinoline degradation in an effort to improve its degradation efficiency and fully utilize the carbon and nitrogen within quinoline without causing any damage to the environment. Accordingly, the strains, research progress and mechanisms of various methods for degrading quinoline are explored and elucidated in detail, especially quinoline biodegradation and the combination of these technologies for efficient removal. The state-of-the-art processes and new findings of our team on the biofortification of quinoline degradation are also presented. Finally, research bottlenecks and gaps for future research were identified along with the prospects and resource utilization of quinoline. These discussions facilitate the realization of the zero discharge of quinoline.

Influence of intermittent flow on removal of organics in a biological activated carbon filter (BAC) used as post-treatment for greywater

Highly variable flow has to be expected in decentralized greywater treatment and can lead to intermittent operation of the treatment system. However, few studies have addressed the influence of variable flow on the treatment performance of a biological activated carbon filter (BAC). In this study, we investigated the influence of intermittent flow using small-scale BAC columns, which treat greywater as a second treatment step following a membrane bioreactor (MBR). Three operating strategies to respond to variable flow were evaluated. The activated carbon was characterized before and after the experiments in terms of biological activity and sorption capacity. The performance of the BAC filters was assessed based on total organic carbon (TOC) removal, TOC fractions and growth potential. No significant differences were observed between constant flow compared to on-off operation with intermittent flow over the range of tested influent concentrations. Peaks with high TOC during 24 h periods were attenuated by sorption and biological degradation. Adsorbed TOC was released after switching back to normal concentrations for influent concentrations more than 5 times higher than usually observed, the BAC functioned as a temporary sink. In line with these results, the high influent TOC values led to increased biological activity in the filter but did not influence the sorption capacity. The experiments showed that intermittent flow does not negatively impact the performance of a BAC and that there is no need for additional equalization tanks to buffer the variable flow, for example in household-scale greywater treatment.
