Abstract
Vitamin E has eight different naturally occurring forms: four tocopherols and four tocotrienols. Because α-tocopherol has three asymmetric carbons, both natural α-tocopherol (RRR-α-tocopherol) and synthetic α-tocopherol (all-rac-α-tocopherol) are utilized in both pharmaceutical products and food additives. Therefore, determining the distribution of vitamin E in the body is very important. With regard to absorption, and transportation of vitamin E, it is suggested that the pathways mediated by three proteins (CD36, SR-BI, and NPC1L1) as well as passive diffusion affect absorption of vitamin E. Vitamin E homologs are mainly transported by very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) with the α-tocopherol being recognized by the α-tocopherol transfer protein in liver. However, it is also suggested that chylomicrons (CMs) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) are involved in transportation of vitamin E homologs from the small intestine to each section of peripheral tissue. In particular, it is speculated that vitamin E homologs transportation by CMs and HDL from enterocytes to peripheral tissues such as adipose tissue greatly affects the distribution of vitamin E homologs, excluding α-tocopherol. However, how lipoprotein lipase affects the incorporation of vitamin E homologs containing lipoprotein into peripheral tissues is unclear. Whether there is biodiscrimination when vitamin E homologs are incorporated into peripheral tissues from lipoprotein is an interesting question. It is likely that future research will reveal how individual vitamin E homologs are incorporated into peripheral tissue, especially the brain, adipose tissue, and skin.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the effects of dietary dried onion and dried cinnamon supplementation on laying performance, egg quality, serum lipid profile, and immune responses of Japanese quails. A total of 120 laying quails aged 12 weeks were randomly allocated into five groups (24 birds each). Each treatment was replicated 4 times with 6 quails in a completely randomized design. Dietary treatments were as follows: control (basal diet only, without any supplementation); tylosin (basal diet + 100 mg tylosin/kg diet); onion (basal diet + 800 mg dried onion/kg diet); cinnamon (basal diet + 800 mg dried cinnamon/kg diet); and onion + cinnamon (basal diet + mixture of 400 mg each of dried onion and dried cinnamon/kg diet). Cinnamon supplementation improved laying rate, egg numbers, egg mass, and feed conversion ratio of quails compared to the control treatment, followed by tylosin supplementation. Egg shell percentage was higher (P < 0.05) in quails that consumed the onion + cinnamon mixture than those fed only the cinnamon supplemented diet. Serum total lipid content, egg yolk lipids and egg yolk cholesterol were lower (P < 0.05) in birds fed with the supplemented diets than that of the control group. On the other hand, dietary supplements did not affect levels of triglycerides and high-density lipoprotein levels. The dietary supplementation with onion and/or cinnamon reduced serum malondialdehyde levels compared to control treatment. The foot web index was higher (P < 0.05) in the onion treatment than in the other experimental groups. The dried cinnamon and the mixture of dried onion + dried cinnamon treatments showed higher (P < 0.05) immunoglobulin M (IgM) levels than the control treatment. In conclusion, dietary supplementation with natural plant materials such as dried onion and cinnamon can be used to improve the laying Japanese quail performance, egg quality, and immunity.

Abstract
Low density lipoprotein (LDL) might be oxidized by iron in the lysosomes of macrophages in atherosclerotic lesions. We have shown previously that the iron-storage proteinferritin can oxidize LDL at lysosomal pH. We have now investigated the roles of the most important antioxidant contained in LDL, α-tocopherol (the main form of vitamin E) and of ascorbate (vitamin C), a major water-soluble antioxidant, on LDL oxidation by ferritin at lysosomal pH (pH 4.5). We incubated LDL with ferritin at pH 4.5 and 37 °C and measured its oxidation by monitoring the formation of conjugated dienes at 234 n min a spectrophotometer. α-Tocopherol is well known to inhibit LDL oxidation at pH 7.4, but enrichment of LDL with α-tocopherol was unable to inhibit LDL oxidation by ferritin at pH 4.5. Ascorbate had a complex effect on LDL oxidation by ferritin at lysosomal pH and exhibited both antioxidant and pro-oxidant effects. It had no antioxidant effect on partially oxidized LDL, only a pro-oxidant effect. Ascorbate completely inhibited LDL oxidation by copper at pH 7.4 for a long period, but in marked contrast did not inhibit LDL oxidation by copper at lysosomal pH. Dehydroascorbate, the oxidation product of ascorbate, had a pronounced pro-oxidant effect on LDL incubated with ferritin at pH 4.5. The inability of α-tocopherol and ascorbate to effectively inhibit LDL oxidation by ferritin at lysosomal pH might help to explain why the large clinical trials with these vitamins failed to show protection against cardiovascular diseases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Taking advantage of isomeric form of vitamin E in the supplement, adherence to supplement could be evaluated by changes in circulating α- and γ-tocopherol concentrations. Accordingly, effects of supplementation on postoperative nutrition and bone metabolism were studied in terms of adherence. METHODS Thirty-eight SG patients were all prescribed a postoperative nutritional supplement containing a low dose of vitamin D (600 IU) and calcium (200 mg). Blood samples were collected prior to (M0) and 6 months after (M6) surgery and concentrations of nutrients and C-terminal telopeptide of type I collage (CTX), a marker of bone resorption, were measured. Adherence and non-adherence were stratified according to change (△, M6-M0) in serum α-tocopherol concentrations (> 0 vs. ≤ 0, respectively). RESULTS When M0 and M6 were compared, there were significant increases in serum concentrations of 25(OH)D, α-tocopherol and selenium, whereas there were reductions in parathyroid hormone, ferritin, and γ-tocopherol. At M6, the prevalence of vitamin D insufficiency (25(OH)D < 30 ng/mL) and high CTX were 72 and 26%, respectively. When comparison was made between adherence and non-adherence, only △25(OH)D concentrations, but no other nutrients nor postoperative CTX differed. Multiple linear regression demonstrated that postoperative vitamin D status was independently associated with its preoperative concentrations (β = 0.85, p < 0.001) and adherence (β = 0.52, p < 0.05). CONCLUSION SG patients' adherence to supplementation, even with a low dose of vitamin D and calcium, determined vitamin D status but not bone resorption marker concentrations, at least within 6 months after surgery.

Abstract
The metabolism of α-tocopherol (α-TOH, vitamin E) shows marked interindividual variability, which may influence the response to nutritional and therapeutic interventions with this vitamin. Recently, new metabolomics protocols have fostered the possibility to explore such variability for the different metabolites of α-TOH so far identified in human blood, i.e., the “vitamin E metabolome”, some of which have been reported to promote important biological functions. Such advances prompt the definition of reference values and degree of interindividual variability for these metabolites at different levels of α-TOH intake. To this end, a one-week oral administration protocol with 800 U RRR-α-TOH/day was performed in 17 healthy volunteers, and α-TOH metabolites were measured in plasma before and at the end of the intervention utilizing a recently validated LC-MS/MS procedure; the expression of two target genes of α-TOH with possible a role in the metabolism and function of this vitamin, namely pregnane X receptor (PXR) and the isoform 4F2 of cytochrome P450 (CYP4F2) was assessed by immunoblot in peripheral blood leukocytes. The levels of enzymatic metabolites showed marked interindividual variability that characteristically increased upon supplementation. With the exception of α-CEHC (carboxy-ethyl-hydroxychroman) and the long-chain metabolites M1 and α-13′OH, such variability was found to interfere with the possibility to utilize them as sensitive indicators of α-TOH intake. On the contrary, the free radical-derived metabolite α-tocopheryl quinone significantly correlated with the post-supplementation levels of α-TOH. The supplementation stimulated PXR, but not CYP4F2, expression of leucocytes, and significant correlations were observed between the baseline levels of α-TOH and both the baseline and post-supplementation levels of PXR. These findings provide original analytical and molecular information regarding the human metabolism of α-TOH and its intrinsic variability, which is worth considering in future nutrigenomics and interventions studies.

Abstract
Many cholesterol-laden foam cells in atherosclerotic lesions are macrophages and much of their cholesterol is present in their lysosomes and derived from low density lipoprotein (LDL). LDL oxidation has been proposed to be involved in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. We have shown previously that LDL can be oxidised in the lysosomes of macrophages. α-Tocopherol has been shown to inhibit LDL oxidation in vitro, but did not protect against cardiovascular disease in large clinical trials. We have therefore investigated the effect of α-tocopherol on LDL oxidation at lysosomal pH (about pH 4.5). LDL was enriched with α-tocopherol by incubating human plasma with α-tocopherol followed by LDL isolation by ultracentrifugation. The α-tocopherol content of LDL was increased from 14.4 ± 0.2 to 24.3 ± 0.3 nmol/mg protein. LDL oxidation was assessed by measuring the formation of conjugated dienes at 234 nm and oxidised lipids (cholesteryl linoleate hydroperoxide and 7-ketocholesterol) by HPLC. As expected, LDL enriched with α-tocopherol was oxidised more slowly than control LDL by Cu2+ at pH 7.4, but was not protected against oxidation by Cu2+ or Fe3+ or a low concentration of Fe2+ at pH 4.5 (it was sometimes oxidised faster by α-tocopherol with Cu2+ or Fe3+ at pH 4.5). α-Tocopherol-enriched LDL reduced Cu2+ and Fe3+ into the more pro-oxidant Cu+ and Fe2+ faster than did control LDL at pH 4.5. These findings might help to explain why the large clinical trials of α-tocopherol did not protect against cardiovascular disease.

Abstract
Metabolic studies support the findings that antioxidants inhibit atherosclerosis. Treatment with vitamin E reduced both the susceptibility of low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) to in vivo lipid peroxidation and atherosclerosis and smooth muscle proliferation. Thus the aim of present study was to examine metabolic consequences of reduced plasma LDL-C during hypolipidemic therapy and the distribution of antioxidant vitamin E. A group of 10 patients (4 men, 6 women, age 35 - 65y) with familial hypercholesterolaemia was treated using pravastatin (Lipostat® Bristol Myers Squibb, 40mg daily at 6.00 PM). Blood samples were examined before treatment, after 4 and 8 weeks of therapy. After ultracentrifugation, samples were analyzed for lipoprotein fractions and the content of vitamin E and cholesterol. Pravastatin reduced both total cholesterol (9.85±0.74 vs. 6.81±0.51 mmol/l; p<0.01), LDL-C (6.42±0.45 vs. 4.51±0.45 mmol/l; p<0.01), light LDL1-C (4.56±0.50 vs. 3.11±0.34 mmol/l; p<0.05) and dense LDL2-C (1.86±0.27 vs. 1.42±0.17 mmol/l; ns). Serum vitamin E was reduced during hypolipidemic therapy in the fraction of total, LDL1, LDL2 and VLDL-cholesterol. However, the ratio of serum vitamin E/total serum cholesterol (4.57±0.32 vs. 5.12±0.37 mmol/l/mmol/l; p<0.05) and ratio of LDL2-C vitamin E/LDL2-C (3.92±0.07 vs. 4.64±0.37 mmol/l/mmol/l; p=0.08) increased in comparison to pre-treatment values. We conclude that pravastatin therapy may possess anti-atherogenic properties which involve not only its hypocholesterolemic effect, but also its favorable effects on the distribution of LDL subclasses and the content of antioxidant vitamin E in atherogenic lipoproteins.

Abstract
Natural chromanols and chromenols comprise a family of molecules with enormous structural diversity and biological activities of pharmacological interest. A recently published systematic review described more than 230 structures that are derived from a chromanol ortpd chromenol core. For many of these compounds structure-activity relationships have been described with mostly anti-inflammatory as well as anti-carcinogenic activities. To extend the knowledge on the biological activity and the therapeutic potential of these promising class of natural compounds, we here present a report on selected chromanols and chromenols based on the availability of data on signaling pathways involved in inflammation, apoptosis, cell proliferation, and carcinogenesis. The chromanol and chromenol derivatives seem to bind or to interfere with several molecular targets and pathways, including 5-lipoxygenase, nuclear receptors, and the nuclear-factor "kappa-light-chain-enhancer" of activated B-cells (NFκB) pathway. Interestingly, available data suggest that the chromanols and chromenols are promiscuitively acting molecules that inhibit enzyme activities, bind to cellular receptors, and modulate mitochondrial function as well as gene expression. It is also noteworthy that the molecular modes of actions by which the chromanols and chromenols exert their effects strongly depend on the concentrations of the compounds. Thereby, low- and high-affinity molecular targets can be classified. This review summarizes the available knowledge on the biological activity of selected chromanols and chromenols which may represent interesting lead structures for the development of therapeutic anti-inflammatory and chemopreventive approaches.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Alpha-tocopherol, a well-known antioxidative agent, may have a positive effect on bone formation during the remodeling phase of secondary fracture healing. Fracture healing and osseointegration of implants share common biological pathways; hence, alpha-tocopherol may enhance implant osseointegration. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES This experimental study in rats assessed the ability of alpha-tocopherol to enhance osseointegration of orthopaedic implants as determined by (1) pull-out strength and removal torque and (2) a histomorphological assessment of bone formation. In addition, we asked, (3) is there a correlation between the administration of alpha-tocopherol and a reduction in postoperative oxidative stress (as determined by malondialdehyde, protein carbonyls, reduced and oxidized glutathione and their ratio, catalase activity and total antioxidant capacity) that develops after implantation of an orthopaedic implant? METHODS This blinded study was performed in study and control groups, each consisting of 15 young adult male Wistar rats. On Day 0, a custom-designed stainless-steel screw was implanted in the proximal metaphysis of both tibias of all rats. On Day 1, animals were randomized to receive either alpha-tocopherol (40 mg/kg once per day intraperitoneally) or saline (controls). Animals were treated according to identical perioperative and postoperative protocols and were euthanized on Day 29. All animals completed the study and all tibias were suitable for evaluation. Implant pullout strength was assessed in the right tibias, and removal torque and histomorphometric evaluations (that is, volume of newly formed bone surrounding the implant in mm, percentage of newly formed bone, percentage of bone marrow surrounding the implant per optical field, thickness of newly formed bone in μm, percentage of mineralized bone in newly formed bone, volume of mature newly formed bone surrounding the implant in mm and percentage of mineralized newly formed bone per tissue area) were performed in the left tibias. The plasma levels of alpha-tocopherol, malondialdehyde, protein carbonyls, glutathione, glutathione disulfide, catalase, and the total antioxidant capacity were evaluated, and the ratio of glutathione to oxidized glutathione was calculated. RESULTS All parameters were different between the alpha-tocopherol-treated and control rats, favoring those in the alpha-tocopherol group. The pullout strength for the alpha-tocopherol group (mean ± SD) was 124.9 ± 20.7 newtons (N) versus 88.1 ± 12.7 N in the control group (mean difference -36.7 [95% CI -49.6 to -23.9]; p < 0.001). The torque median value was 7 (range 5.4 to 8.3) versus 5.2 (range 3.6 to 6 ) N/cm (p < 0.001). The newly formed bone volume was 29.8 ± 5.7 X 10 versus 25.2 ± 7.8 X 10 mm (mean difference -4.6 [95% CI -8.3 to -0.8]; p = 0.018), the percentage of mineralized bone in newly formed bone was 74.6% ± 8.7% versus 62.1% ± 9.8% (mean difference -12.5 [95% CI -20.2 to -4.8]; p = 0.003), the percentage of mineralized newly formed bone per tissue area was 40.3 ± 8.6% versus 34.8 ± 9% (mean difference -5.5 [95% CI -10.4 to -0.6]; p = 0.028), the glutathione level was 2 ± 0.4 versus 1.3 ± 0.3 μmol/g of hemoglobin (mean difference -0.6 [95% CI -0.9 to -0.4]; p < 0.001), the median glutathione/oxidized glutathione ratio was 438.8 (range 298 to 553) versus 340.1 (range 212 to 454; p = 0.002), the catalase activity was 155.6 ± 44.6 versus 87.3 ± 25.2 U/mg Hb (mean difference -68.3 [95% CI -95.4 to -41.2]; p < 0.001), the malondialdehyde level was 0.07 ± 0.02 versus 0.14 ± 0.03 μmol/g protein (mean difference 0.07 [95% CI 0.05 to 0.09]; p < 0.001), the protein carbonyl level was 0.16 ± 0.04 versus 0.27 ± 0.08 nmol/mg of protein (mean difference -0.1 [95% CI 0.05 to 0.15]; p = 0.002), the alpha-tocopherol level was 3.9 ± 4.1 versus 0.9 ± 0.2 mg/dL (mean difference -3 [95% CI -5.2 to -0.7]; p = 0.011), and the total antioxidant capacity was 15.9 ± 3.2 versus 13.7 ± 1.7 nmol 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical/g of protein (mean difference -2.1 [95% CI -4.1 to -0.18]; p = 0.008). CONCLUSIONS These results using an in vivo rat model support that postoperatively administered alpha-tocopherol can enhance the osseointegration of an orthopaedic implant, although a cause and effect relationship between the administration of alpha-tocopherol and a reduction in postoperative stress cannot be securely established. CLINICAL RELEVANCE These findings suggest that postoperative administration of alpha-tocopherol is a promising approach to enhance osseointegration of orthopaedic implants in patients. Further studies with different animal models and/or different implants and those evaluating the alpha-tocopherol dose response are needed before performing clinical trials that will examine whether these promising, preliminary results can be extrapolated to the clinical setting as well.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Atherosclerosis is a major cardiovascular disease and one of the commonest causes of mortality in the world. Speech, balance, fine motor control and cognition are affected by atherosclerosis of cerebellar arteries. This study investigated the protective role of vitamin E against induced atherosclerosis in the rabbit cerebellum. MATERIALS AND METHODS Forty Rex New Zealand adult male rabbits were randomly divided into four groups (10 rabbits each). Group I was designated as the control and received an ordinary diet. Group II received an ordinary diet, but with vitamin E (12 mg/kg/day) added. Group III were given an ordinary diet along with 1% cholesterol powder for 6 weeks. Finally, group IV received an ordinary diet with both 1% cholesterol powder and vitamin E (12 mg/kg/day). Cerebellum samples were stained with haematoxylin and eosin and examined using light microscopy, along with quantitative immunohistochemical assessments of the expression of caspase-3, glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS). RESULTS Cerebellum sections from cholesterol-treated rabbits showed ischaemic changes as fibre density decreased, with vacuolation of the molecular layer, and deformed and shrunken Purkinje cells. A significant increase in caspase-3, GFAP and iNOS immunoreactivity was found. However, vitamin E administration reduced these ischaemic manifestations. CONCLUSIONS The results demonstrate the neurological protective role of vitamin E therapy in atherosclerosis.

Abstract
Aims: The management of myocardial ischemia has been challenged by reperfusion injury. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) production is the critical cause of reperfusion injury, but antioxidant treatment failed to gain satisfactory effects. We hypothesized that improvement of redox homeostasis by preconditioning regulation should potentiate the ability of antioxidants to protect the heart from reperfusion injury. Results: By phenotype-based screening, we identified that dihydrotanshinone I (DT) and protocatechuic aldehyde (PCA) potently protected cardiomyocytes through preconditioning regulation and antioxidant activity, respectively. DT induced transient ROS generation via reversible inhibition of mitochondrial respiratory complex I and thereby stabilizing HIF-1α, while PCA elevated the levels of reduced glutathione (GSH) by providing reducing equivalents to scavenge ROS. HIF-1α, stabilized by DT, transcriptionally upregulated Nrf2 and thereby activated antioxidant enzymes, potentiating PCA to protect cardiomyocytes from reperfusion injury by strengthening intrinsic ROS scavenging capacity. In rat ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) model, sequential administration of DT and PCA, but not in reverse, additively protected the heart from I/R injury, manifested by reduced infarct size and improved cardiac function. These results were further supported by sequential administration of metformin and vitamin E in the rat and porcine I/R models. Innovation and Conclusion: Our work demonstrates that preconditioning regulation of redox state is essential for antioxidants to protect the heart from I/R injury, providing a new direction for the treatment of myocardial injury.

Abstract
Background Although α- and γ-tocopherol are co-consumed antioxidants, circulating γ-tocopherol concentrations were paradoxically found to be inversely associated with total vitamin E intake and circulating α-tocopherol concentrations. There are limited data on this apparent paradox or on determinants of circulating γ-tocopherol concentrations. Objective To help clarify possible determinants of circulating γ-tocopherol concentrations, we investigated associations of circulating γ-tocopherol concentrations with various dietary and lifestyle factors and biomarkers of oxidative stress and inflammation. Methods We pooled cross-sectional data from 2 outpatient, adult, elective colonoscopy populations (pooled n = 419) on whom extensive dietary, lifestyle, and medical information was collected, and the following plasma concentrations were measured: α- and γ-tocopherol (via HPLC), F2-isoprostanes (FiPs; via gas chromatography-mass spectrometry), and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP; via latex-enhanced immunonephelometry). Multivariable general linear models were used to assess mean γ-tocopherol differences across quantiles of plasma antioxidant micronutrients, FiPs, and hsCRP; an oxidative balance score [OBS; a composite of anti- and pro-oxidant dietary and lifestyle exposures (a higher score indicates higher antioxidant relative to pro-oxidant exposures)]; and multiple dietary and lifestyle factors. Results Adjusted for serum total cholesterol, mean γ-tocopherol concentrations among those in the highest relative to the lowest tertiles of circulating α-tocopherol and β-carotene, the OBS, and total calcium and dietary fiber intakes were 31.0% (P < 0.0001), 29.0% (P < 0.0001), 27.6% (P = 0.0001), 29.7% (P < 0.0001), and 18.6% (P = 0.008) lower, respectively. For those in the highest relative to the lowest tertiles of circulating FiPs and hsCRP, mean γ-tocopherol concentrations were 50% (P < 0.0001) and 39.0% (P < 0.0001) higher, respectively. Conclusions These findings support the conclusion that circulating γ-tocopherol concentrations are inversely associated with antioxidant exposures and directly associated with systemic oxidative stress and inflammation in adults. Additional research on possible mechanisms underlying these findings and on whether circulating γ-tocopherol may serve as a biomarker of oxidative stress, inflammation, or both is needed.

Abstract
Based on the significance of oxidized low-density lipoprotein (LDL) in health and disease, this review focuses on human studies addressing oxidation of LDL, including three lines of biomarkers, (i) ex vivo LDL resistance to oxidation, a "challenge test" model, (ii) circulating oxidized LDL, indicating the "current in vivo status", and (iii) autoantibodies against oxidized LDL as fingerprints of an immune response to oxidized LDL, along with circulating oxysterols and 4-hydroxynonenal as biomarkers of lipid peroxidation. Lipid peroxidation and oxidized LDL are hallmarks in the development of various metabolic, cardiovascular and other diseases. Changes further occur across life stages from infancy to older age as well as in athletes and smokers. Given their responsiveness to targeted nutritional interventions, markers of LDL oxidation have been employed in a rapidly growing number of human studies for more than 2 decades. There is growing interest in foods, which, besides providing energy and nutrients, exert beneficial effects on human health, such as protection of DNA, proteins and lipids from oxidative damage. Any health claim, however, needs to be substantiated by supportive evidence derived from human studies, using reliable biomarkers to demonstrate such beneficial effects. A large body of evidence has accumulated, demonstrating protection of LDL from oxidation by bioactive food compounds, including vitamins, other micronutrients and secondary plant ingredients, which will facilitate the selection of oxidation biomarkers for future human intervention studies and health claim support.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Horse serum-induced immune complex coronary vasculitis in swine is the first experimental model to mimic most of the pictures of Kawasaki disease. Immune complex mechanism has been implicated as one of the possible mechanisms in the pathogenesis of vasculitis in Kawasaki disease. Antioxidants have a significant role in the reduction of cardiovascular diseases in both human and animal studies. We tried giving vitamins A, E, and C to treat immune complex vasculitis, in the hope of mitigating coronary vasculitis in Kawasaki disease. METHODS Our study group consisted of 30 pure bred male piglets of 2-3 months of age, and they were divided into test and control groups. The test (AEC) group (n = 20) received two doses of horse serum, 10 mL (0.65 g protein)/kg body weight at 5-day intervals, and oral vitamins A, E, and C once daily for 14 days. The control group (n = 10) was further divided into the saline group (n = 3) receiving two doses of normal saline and the horse serum group (n = 7) receiving two doses of horse serum at 5-day intervals. Piglets were observed for the rashes and coronary artery dimensions. RESULTS Both the AEC and the control horse serum group developed rashes after horse serum infusions, but the AEC group developed significantly fewer rashes, and no rashes were seen in the saline group. The control horse serum group (mean ± standard deviation = 2.13 ± 0.72) showed significant coronary artery dilatation, whereas there was no significant dilatation in the AEC group (mean ± standard deviation = 0.81 ± 0.58) or the control saline group (p = 0.002). CONCLUSION Serum sickness is a prototype of immune complex vasculitis, and the severity can be ameliorated with antioxidants. A trial of therapeutic dosages of vitamins A, E, and C in acute phase of Kawasaki disease, may be effective in mitigation of coronary artery lesion in addition to intravenous immunoglobulin and aspirin.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Controlling antioxidant supplementation in athletes involved in studies related to oxidative stress and muscle damage is the key to ensure results. The aim of this study was to confirm through high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis whether well-trained individuals lied during a personal interview when asked if they were taking supplements with antioxidants, and how this could affect oxidative stress, muscle damage, and antioxidant response. METHODS A total of 94 men, well trained in endurance sports, volunteered in this study. They denied taking any antioxidant supplementation at initial interview. After a HPLC analysis, abnormal α-tocopherol concentrations were detected, probably due to a hidden antioxidant supplementation. Participants were classified into two groups: no evidence of antioxidant supplementation (NS group = α-tocopherol values <80 nmol/mL; n = 75) and evidence of antioxidant supplementation (S group = α-tocopherol values >80 nmol/mL; n = 19). Lipid peroxidation, muscle damage, antioxidant enzyme activity, and nonenzymatic antioxidant content were analyzed according to this classification. Statistical comparisons were performed using Student's t test. RESULTS The α-tocopherol concentrations were significantly higher in the S group than in the NS group (MD = 725.01 ± 39.01 nmol/mL; P = 0.001). The S group showed a trend toward lower hydroperoxides than the NS group (MD = 1.19 ± 0.72 nmol/mL; P = 0.071). The S group showed significantly lower catalase activity than the NS group (MD = 0.10 ± 0.02-seg-1 mg-1; P < 0.01). Skeletal muscle damage markers did not differ between experimental groups. CONCLUSIONS Data from the present study reveal that 20% of participants lied in the exclusion criteria of antioxidant supplementation in a personal interview, as they showed high plasmatic α-tocopherol concentrations after HPLC verification. Catalase activity seems to be affected by high α-tocopherol plasma levels. Therefore, we strongly recommend the HPLC analysis as a necessary tool to verify the antioxidant intake and preserve results in studies linking oxidative stress and sport.

Abstract
This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of adding peppermint essential oil (PEO), thyme essential oil (TEO), or their combination to diet on productive performance, egg quality traits, and blood parameters of laying hens reared under cold stress condition (6.8 ± 3 °C). Feed intake (FI), feed conversion ratio (FCR), egg weight (EW), egg production (EP), and egg mass (EM) were evaluated during the 56-day trial period using 120 Lohmann LSL-lite laying hens. Significant interactions between PEO and TEO on FCR, EP, and EM were observed (P < 0.05). The EP and EM increased, whereas FCR decreased (P < 0.05) in the hens fed the diets supplemented by the combined form of PEO and TEO compared to those fed the basal diet. Also, increased EW and FI were observed in the laying hens fed the diet added by PEO compared to the birds fed the basal diet. There were significant interactions between PEO and TEO on the serum level of cholesterol, shell thickness, and Hough unit of egg (P < 0.05), so that serum content of cholesterol decreased, but egg shell thickness and Hough unit increased in the hens fed the diet supplemented by the combined form of PEO and TEO compared to those fed the basal diet. From the results of the present experiment, it can be concluded that diet supplementation by combined form of PEO and TEO could have beneficial effects on performance parameters of hens reared under cold stress condition.

Feed intake (FI), feed conversion ratio (FCR), egg weight (EW), egg production (EP), and egg mass (EM) were evaluated during the 56-day trial period using 120 Lohmann LSL-Lite laying hens. Significant interactions between Ci and Zn on FCR, EW, EP, or EM were observed (P < 0.05). The EP, EM, and EW increased, whereas FCR decreased (P < 0.05) in the hens fed the diets including Ci and Zn (as single or combined form) compared to those fed the basal diet. There were significant interactions between Ci and Zn on the serum level of glucose and triglycerides as well as plasma concentration of zinc (P < 0.05), so that serum content of glucose and triglyceride decreased and the plasma content of zinc increased in the hens fed the diets including Ci and Zn (together) compared to those fed the basal diet. From the results of the present experiment, it can be concluded that diet supplementation by the combined form of Ci and Zn could have beneficial effects on performance and blood parameters of hens reared under cold stress condition.

Abstract
Plaque formation is confined to the arterial trunk. We assumed that due to the higher aeration of arterial compared to venous blood, higher levels of the atherogenic agent oxidized LDL might be present in arteries, contributing to plaque formation. We aimed to compare (i) the basal oxidative status of LDL in arterial and venous blood and (ii) the susceptibility of arterial and venous LDL to oxidation. The basal oxidative status of LDL was determined by measuring lipid hydroperoxide (LPO) concentrations, plasma levels of auto-antibodies against oxidized LDL, and by measuring oxidation-specific epitopes on LDL particles. The oxidizability of arterial vs. venous LDL (catalyzed by copper) was estimated by monitoring the time-course of conjugated dienes formation. Interestingly, we found the same basal oxidative status of LDL in arterial and venous plasma. LPO concentrations and levels of auto-antibodies against oxidized LDL were similar in arterial and venous plasma and amounts of oxidation-specific epitopes were similar on the respective LDL particles. Moreover, we found similar susceptibilities of arterial and venous LDL to (copper-mediated) oxidation. Lag-times until the onset of conjugated diene formation were slightly shorter in arterial compared to venous LDL in the presence of 5 μM, but not in the presence of 1 μM CuCl2. Additionally, we found significantly higher levels of the atherogenic lipoprotein(a) in arterial plasma. We conclude that not higher oxidizability of arterial LDL but higher arterial lipoprotein(a) levels might help to explain why sclerosis is confined to the arterial trunk.

Abstract
A study was conducted using 240 female day-old broiler chicks to evaluate the effects of dietary chromium picolinate (CrPic), peppermint essential oil (P.mint), or their combination on growth performance and blood biochemical parameters of female broiler chicks raised under heat stress conditions (HS, 23.9 to 38 °C cycling). Average daily gain (ADG), average daily feed intake (ADFI), and feed conversion ratio (FCR) were obtained from 1 to 42 days of age. Furthermore, at the end of the experiment (day 42), birds were bled to determine some blood biochemical parameters and weighed for final body weight (BW). ADFI, ADG, and BW were not influenced significantly by dietary CrPic and P.mint (P>0.05). A significant interaction between dietary CrPic and P.mint on FCR (P=0.012) was detected. FCR significantly decreased in chicks fed the diet including both CrPic and P.mint compared with the CrPic group. Significant interaction between dietary P.mint and CrPic on serum concentrations of triglycerides, glucose, and albumin were observed (P<0.05), but the other measured blood biochemical parameters were not statistically affected by dietary treatments (P>0.05). The serum concentrations of glucose, triglycerides were decreased (P<0.05) in broilers fed the diet including both CrPic and P.mint. Plasma chromium (Cr) content increased significantly (P<0.05) in birds fed the CrPic-included diet compared with the control group (P<0.05). From the results of the present experiment it can be concluded that dietary supplementation with combined P.mint and CrPic could have beneficial effects on some blood biochemical parameters of female chicks reared under heat stress conditions.

Abstract
A study was conducted using 360 broiler chickens to evaluate the effects of dietary vitamin E (0, 125 and 250 mg/kg), selenium (Se, 0, 0.5 and 1 mg/kg), or their different combinations on immune response and blood biological parameters of broilers raised under either thermoneutral (TN, 23.9 °C constant) or heat stress (HS, 23.9 to 37 °C cycling) conditions. Humoral immunity was assessed by intravenous injection of 7% sheep red blood cell (SRBC) followed by evaluation of serum for antibody titers in primary and secondary responses. Heterophil to lymphocyte (H/L) ratio also determined as an indicator of stress. Furthermore, at the end of the experiment, birds were bled for determination of some biological parameters. There was a significant reduction in body weight and feed intake, but the feed conversion ratio increased when the birds were exposed to HS (P<0.05). Body weight and feed intake were not influenced significantly by dietary vitamin E and Se (P>0.05), whereas feed conversion was improved significantly by 125 mg/kg vitamin E (P<0.05). The liver and lymphoid organ weights as well as IgM and IgG, antibody titers for primary and secondary antibody responses to SRBC were reduced significantly under HS (P<0.05). Heat stress also resulted in a significant increase in H/L ratio (P<0.05). Dietary vitamin E resulted in improvement of primary and secondary antibody responses both in TN and HS broilers (P<0.05). The HS birds also showed an improved antibody titer in secondary response with high concentration of Se (P<0.05). Vitamin E and Se had interactive effects on anti-SRBC titers; however, no consistent differences were found between dietary levels during the study. The H/L ratio decreased by feeding vitamin E at both levels either under HS or TN conditions (P < 0.05). The serum concentrations of glucose, triglycerides, total cholesterol, and LDL-cholesterol were increased but serum HDL-cholesterol decreased in HS broilers (P<0.05).

Abstract
BACKGROUND A cholesterol-lowering diet and several other dietary interventions have been suggested as a management approach either independently or as an adjuvant to drug therapy in children and adults with familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH). However, a consensus has yet to be reached on the most appropriate dietary treatment. Plant sterols are commonly used in FH although patients may know them by other names like phytosterols or stanols. OBJECTIVES To examine whether a cholesterol-lowering diet is more effective in reducing ischaemic heart disease and lowering cholesterol than no dietary intervention in children and adults with familial hypercholesterolaemia. Further, to compare the efficacy of supplementing a cholesterol-lowering diet with either omega-3 fatty acids, soya proteins, plant sterols or plant stanols. SEARCH METHODS We searched the Cochrane Cystic Fibrosis and Genetic Disorders Group Inborn Errors of Metabolism Trials Register, which is compiled from electronic searches of the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) (updated with each new issue of The Cochrane Library), quarterly searches of MEDLINE and the prospective handsearching of one journal - Journal of Inherited Metabolic Disease. Most recent search of the Group's Inborn Errors of Metabolism Trials Register: 22 August 2013. We also searched PubMed to 05 February 2012. SELECTION CRITERIA Randomised controlled trials, both published and unpublished, where a cholesterol-lowering diet in children and adults with familial hypercholesterolaemia has been compared to other forms of dietary treatment or to no dietary intervention were included. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS Two authors independently assessed the trial eligibility and risk of bias and one extracted the data, with independent verification of data extraction by a colleague. MAIN RESULTS In the 2014 update of the review, 15 trials have been included, with a total of 453 participants across seven comparison groups. The included trials had either a low or unclear risk of bias for most of the parameters used for risk assessment. Only short-term outcomes could be assessed due to the short duration of follow up in the included trials. None of the primary outcomes, (incidence of ischaemic heart disease, number of deaths and age at death) were evaluated in any of the included trials. No significant differences were noted for the majority of secondary outcomes for any of the planned comparisons. However, a significant difference was found for the following comparisons and outcomes: for the comparison between plant sterols and cholesterol-lowering diet (in favour of plant sterols), total cholesterol levels, mean difference 0.30 mmol/l (95% confidence interval 0.12 to 0.48); decreased serum LDL cholesterol, mean difference -0.60 mmol/l (95% CI -0.89 to -0.31). Fasting serum HDL cholesterol levels were elevated, mean difference -0.04 mmol/l (95% CI -0.11 to 0.03) and serum triglyceride concentration was reduced, mean difference -0.03 mmol/l (95% CI -0.15 to -0.09), although these changes were not statistically significant. Similarly, guar gum when given as an add on therapy to bezafibrate reduced total cholesterol and LDL levels as compared to bezafibrate alone. AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS No conclusions can be made about the effectiveness of a cholesterol-lowering diet, or any of the other dietary interventions suggested for familial hypercholesterolaemia, for the primary outcomes: evidence and incidence of ischaemic heart disease, number of deaths and age at death,due to the lack of data on these. Large, parallel, randomised controlled trials are needed to investigate the effectiveness of a cholesterol-lowering diet and the addition of omega-3 fatty acids, plant sterols or stanols, soya protein, dietary fibers to a cholesterol-lowering diet.

Abstract
Parkinson's disease is a neurodegenerative disease whose hallmark pathological features include a selective loss of dopaminergic neurons in the midbrain. Ciclooxygenase-2 activity induction and oxidative stress have been implicated in the aetiology of Parkinson's disease and in the 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) animal model of Parkinson disease. Upon administration of fish oil, melatonin and vitamin E, neuroprotective effects on MPTP-induced neurotoxicity have been indicated. The aim of this study was to investigate the time course and compare the potency of these agents alone, on several parameters such as COX-2 and lipid peroxides (LPO) products associated with MPTP neurotoxicity in midbrain homogenates of C57BL/6 mice. Using fish oil (0.0368 g EPA and 0.0184 g DHA, per day), melatonin (10 mg/kg/day), and vitamin E (50 mg/Kg/day) we have now shown that COX-2 activity, LPO and nitrite/nitrate levels were significantly increased in MPTP treated mice (p < 0.001) while fish oil, melatonin and vitamin E treatment were capable of decreasing significantly the outcome of all above noted parameters (p < 0.05). The effect of fish oil on COX-2 activity and nitrite/nitrate levels was more profound than that of vitamin E or melatonin while the latter was more effective on reducing the LPO levels compared to fish oil and vitamin E. In conclusion, the outcome of the neuroprotective effects of these agents is long lasting and of variable potency indicating a different anti-inflammatory mode of action.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Our systematic review has demonstrated that antioxidant supplements may increase mortality. We have now updated this review. OBJECTIVES To assess the beneficial and harmful effects of antioxidant supplements for prevention of mortality in adults. SEARCH METHODS We searched The Cochrane Library, MEDLINE, EMBASE, LILACS, the Science Citation Index Expanded, and Conference Proceedings Citation Index-Science to February 2011. We scanned bibliographies of relevant publications and asked pharmaceutical companies for additional trials. SELECTION CRITERIA We included all primary and secondary prevention randomised clinical trials on antioxidant supplements (beta-carotene, vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, and selenium) versus placebo or no intervention. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS Three authors extracted data. Random-effects and fixed-effect model meta-analyses were conducted. Risk of bias was considered in order to minimise the risk of systematic errors. Trial sequential analyses were conducted to minimise the risk of random errors. Random-effects model meta-regression analyses were performed to assess sources of intertrial heterogeneity. MAIN RESULTS Seventy-eight randomised trials with 296,707 participants were included. Fifty-six trials including 244,056 participants had low risk of bias. Twenty-six trials included 215,900 healthy participants. Fifty-two trials included 80,807 participants with various diseases in a stable phase. The mean age was 63 years (range 18 to 103 years). The mean proportion of women was 46%. Of the 78 trials, 46 used the parallel-group design, 30 the factorial design, and 2 the cross-over design. All antioxidants were administered orally, either alone or in combination with vitamins, minerals, or other interventions. The duration of supplementation varied from 28 days to 12 years (mean duration 3 years; median duration 2 years). Overall, the antioxidant supplements had no significant effect on mortality in a random-effects model meta-analysis (21,484 dead/183,749 (11.7%) versus 11,479 dead/112,958 (10.2%); 78 trials, relative risk (RR) 1.02, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.98 to 1.05) but significantly increased mortality in a fixed-effect model (RR 1.03, 95% CI 1.01 to 1.05). Heterogeneity was low with an I(2)- of 12%. In meta-regression analysis, the risk of bias and type of antioxidant supplement were the only significant predictors of intertrial heterogeneity. Meta-regression analysis did not find a significant difference in the estimated intervention effect in the primary prevention and the secondary prevention trials. In the 56 trials with a low risk of bias, the antioxidant supplements significantly increased mortality (18,833 dead/146,320 (12.9%) versus 10,320 dead/97,736 (10.6%); RR 1.04, 95% CI 1.01 to 1.07). This effect was confirmed by trial sequential analysis. Excluding factorial trials with potential confounding showed that 38 trials with low risk of bias demonstrated a significant increase in mortality (2822 dead/26,903 (10.5%) versus 2473 dead/26,052 (9.5%); RR 1.10, 95% CI 1.05 to 1.15). In trials with low risk of bias, beta-carotene (13,202 dead/96,003 (13.8%) versus 8556 dead/77,003 (11.1%); 26 trials, RR 1.05, 95% CI 1.01 to 1.09) and vitamin E (11,689 dead/97,523 (12.0%) versus 7561 dead/73,721 (10.3%); 46 trials, RR 1.03, 95% CI 1.00 to 1.05) significantly increased mortality, whereas vitamin A (3444 dead/24,596 (14.0%) versus 2249 dead/16,548 (13.6%); 12 trials, RR 1.07, 95% CI 0.97 to 1.18), vitamin C (3637 dead/36,659 (9.9%) versus 2717 dead/29,283 (9.3%); 29 trials, RR 1.02, 95% CI 0.98 to 1.07), and selenium (2670 dead/39,779 (6.7%) versus 1468 dead/22,961 (6.4%); 17 trials, RR 0.97, 95% CI 0.91 to 1.03) did not significantly affect mortality. In univariate meta-regression analysis, the dose of vitamin A was significantly associated with increased mortality (RR 1.0006, 95% CI 1.0002 to 1.001, P = 0.002). AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS We found no evidence to support antioxidant supplements for primary or secondary prevention. Beta-carotene and vitamin E seem to increase mortality, and so may higher doses of vitamin A. Antioxidant supplements need to be considered as medicinal products and should undergo sufficient evaluation before marketing.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to investigate the hypocholesterolemic effect and potential of tyramine derivatives from Lycii Cortex Radicis (LCR), the root bark of lycium (Lycium chenese Miller) in reducing lipid peroxidation. The activities of enzymes, hepatic 3-hydroxy 3-methylglutaryl (HMG) CoA reductase and acyl-CoA:cholesterol acyltransferase (ACAT) and LDL oxidation were measured in vitro and animal experiments were also performed by feeding LCR extracts to rats. The test compounds employed for in vitro study were trans-N-p-coumaroyltyramine (CT) and trans-N-feruloyltyramine (FT), LCR components, N-(p-coumaroyl)serotonin (CS) and N-feruloylserotonin (FS) from safflower seeds, ferulic acid (FA) and 10-gingerol. It was observed that FT and FS at the concentration of 1.2 mg/mL inhibited liver microsomal HMG CoA reductase activity by ~40%, but no inhibition of activity was seen in the cases of CT, CS, FA and 10-gingerol. Whereas, ACAT activity was inhibited ~50% by FT and CT, 34-43% by FS and CS and ~80% by 10-gingerol at the concentration of 1 mg/mL. A significant delay in LDL oxidation was induced by CT, FT, and 10-gingerol. For the animal experiment, five groups of Sprague-Dawley male rats were fed high fat diets containing no test material (HF-control), 1 and 2% of LCR ethanol extract (LCR1 and LCR2), and 1% of extracts from safflower seed (Saf) and ginger (Gin). The results indicated that total cholesterol level was significantly lower in Saf, LCR2 and Gin groups, and HDL cholesterol level was lower only in Gin group when compared with HF-control group; while there was no difference in the serum triglyceride levels among the five experimental groups. The level of liver cholesterol was significantly lower in LCR1 and LCR2 groups than HF-control. Serum levels of TBARS were significantly lower only in LCR2 group when compared with HF-control group. From the observed results, we concluded that LCR can be utilized as a hypocholesterolemic ingredient in combination with ginger, especially for functional foods.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Vitamin E and its derivatives, namely, the tocopherols, are known antioxidants, and numerous clinical trials have investigated their role in preventing cardiovascular disease; however, evidence to date remains inconclusive. Much of the in vitro research has focused on tocopherol's effects during low-density lipoprotein (LDL) oxidation, with little attention being paid to very LDL (VLDL) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL). Also, it is now becoming apparent that γ-tocopherol may potentially be more beneficial in relation to cardiovascular health. OBJECTIVES Do α- and γ-tocopherols become incorporated into VLDL, LDL and HDL and influence their oxidation potential in an in vitro and ex vivo situation? DESIGN Following (i) an in vitro investigation, where plasma was preincubated with increasing concentrations of either α- or γ-tocopherol and (ii) an in vivo 4-week placebo-controlled intervention with α- or γ-tocopherol. Tocopherol incorporation into VLDL, LDL and HDL was measured via high-pressure liquid chromatography, followed by an assessment of their oxidation potential by monitoring conjugated diene formation. RESULTS In vitro: Both tocopherols became incorporated into VLDL, LDL and HDL, which protected VLDL and LDL against oxidation. However and surprisingly, the incorporation into HDL demonstrated pro-oxidant properties. Ex vivo: Both tocopherols were incorporated into all three lipoproteins, protecting VLDL and LDL against oxidation; however, they enhanced the oxidation of HDL. CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that α- and γ-tocopherols display conflicting oxidant activities dependent on the lipoprotein being oxidized. Their pro-oxidant activity toward HDL may go some way to explain why supplementation studies with vitamin E have not been able to display cardioprotective effects.

Abstract
The Selenium and Vitamin E Cancer Prevention Trial (SELECT) randomized 35,533 healthy men, >55 yr old (>50 yr if African American), with normal digital rectal exams and prostate specific antigens <4 ng/ml to 1) 200 μg/day l-selenomethionine, 2) 400 IU/day all-rac-alpha-tocopheryl acetate (vitamin E), 3) both supplements, or 4) placebo for 7 to 12 yr. The hypotheses underlying SELECT, that selenium and vitamin E individually and together decrease prostate cancer incidence, derived from epidemiologic and laboratory evidence and significant secondary endpoints in the Nutritional Prevention of Cancer (selenium) and Alpha-Tocopherol Beta-Carotene (vitamin E) trials. In SELECT, prostate cancer incidence did not differ among the 4 arms: hazard ratios [99% confidence intervals (CIs)] for prostate cancer were 1.13 (99% CI = 0.95-1.35, P = 0.06; n = 473) for vitamin E, 1.04 (99% CI = 0.87-1.24, P = 0.62; n = 432) for selenium, and 1.05 (99% CI = 0.88-1.25, P = 0.52; n = 437) for selenium + vitamin E vs. 1.00 (n = 416) for placebo. Statistically nonsignificant increased risks of prostate cancer with vitamin E alone [relative risk (RR) = 1.13, P = 0.06) and newly diagnosed Type 2 diabetes mellitus with selenium alone (RR = 1.07, P = 0.16) were observed. SELECT data show that neither selenium nor vitamin E, alone or together, in the doses and formulations used, prevented prostate cancer in this heterogeneous population of healthy men.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A cholesterol-lowering diet and several other dietary interventions have been suggested as a management approach either independently or as an adjuvant to drug therapy in children and adults with familial hypercholesterolemia. However, a consensus has yet to be reached on the most appropriate dietary treatment. OBJECTIVES To examine whether a cholesterol-lowering diet is more effective in reducing ischaemic heart disease and lowering cholesterol than no dietary intervention in children and adults with familial hypercholesterolaemia. Further, to compare the efficacy of supplementing a cholesterol-lowering diet with either omega-3 fatty acids, soya proteins, plant sterols or plant stanols. SEARCH STRATEGY We searched the Cochrane Cystic Fibrosis and Genetic Disorders Group Inborn Errors of Metabolism Trials Register.Most recent search of the Group's Inborn Errors of Metabolism Trials Register: 09 October 2009.We also searched PubMed till 01 June 2008. SELECTION CRITERIA Randomised controlled trials, both published and unpublished, where a cholesterol-lowering diet in children and adults with familial hypercholesterolaemia has been compared to other forms of dietary treatment or to no dietary intervention were included. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS Two authors independently assessed the trial eligibility and methodological quality and one extracted the data, with independent verification of data extraction by a colleague. MAIN RESULTS In the present update, four new trials have been added making eleven trials with a total of 331 participants eligible for inclusion. Only short-term outcomes could be assessed due to the short duration of follow up in the included studies. None of the primary outcomes, (incidence of ischaemic heart disease, number of deaths and age at death) were evaluated in any of the included studies. No significant difference was noted for the majority of secondary outcomes for any of the planned comparisons. However, a significant difference was found only for the following comparison and outcome: total cholesterol levels for the comparison between plant sterols and cholesterol-lowering diet, mean difference 0.70 (95% confidence interval 0.19 to 1.21). AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS No conclusions can be made about the effectiveness of a cholesterol-lowering diet, or any of the other dietary interventions suggested for familial hypercholesterolaemia, due to the lack of adequate data. Large, parallel, randomised controlled trials are needed to investigate the effectiveness of a cholesterol-lowering diet and the addition of omega-3 fatty acids, plant sterols or stanols, soya protein to a cholesterol-lowering diet.

Abstract
Inflammation is a stereotypical physiological response to infections and tissue injury; it initiates pathogen killing as well as tissue repair processes and helps to restore homeostasis at infected or damaged sites. Acute inflammatory reactions are usually self-limiting and resolve rapidly, due to the involvement of negative feedback mechanisms. Thus, regulated inflammatory responses are essential to remain healthy and maintain homeostasis. However, inflammatory responses that fail to regulate themselves can become chronic and contribute to the perpetuation and progression of disease. Characteristics typical of chronic inflammatory responses underlying the pathophysiology of several disorders include loss of barrier function, responsiveness to a normally benign stimulus, infiltration of inflammatory cells into compartments where they are not normally found in such high numbers, and overproduction of oxidants, cytokines, chemokines, eicosanoids and matrix metalloproteinases. The levels of these mediators amplify the inflammatory response, are destructive and contribute to the clinical symptoms. Various dietary components including long chain ω-3 fatty acids, antioxidant vitamins, plant flavonoids, prebiotics and probiotics have the potential to modulate predisposition to chronic inflammatory conditions and may have a role in their therapy. These components act through a variety of mechanisms including decreasing inflammatory mediator production through effects on cell signaling and gene expression (ω-3 fatty acids, vitamin E, plant flavonoids), reducing the production of damaging oxidants (vitamin E and other antioxidants), and promoting gut barrier function and anti-inflammatory responses (prebiotics and probiotics). However, in general really strong evidence of benefit to human health through anti-inflammatory actions is lacking for most of these dietary components. Thus, further studies addressing efficacy in humans linked to studies providing greater understanding of the mechanisms of action involved are required.

Abstract
Três garanhões foram utilizados para estudar o efeito da adição de trolox e pentoxifilina na motilidade, integridade do acrossoma e DNA de espermatozoides pós-descongelação. Para congelação, utilizou-se Tris-gema com glicerol (5%) em máquina de congelação de sêmen. As amostras foram descongeladas a 37ºC durante 30 segundos e tratadas com: T1= 150µL de sêmen + 150µL de Tris; T2= 150µL de sêmen + 150µL de Tris + 120µM/mL de trolox; T3= 150µL de sêmen + 150µL de Tris + 3,5mM de pentoxifilina e T4= 150µL de sêmen + 150µL de Tris + 3,5mM de pentoxifilina + 120µM/mL de trolox. Após 0, 60 e 120 minutos de incubação (37ºC), as amostras foram analisadas quanto à motilidade, vigor, integridade de acrossoma e DNA. Não houve diferença (P>0,05) entre tratamentos após 0 e 60 minutos de incubação em todos os parâmetros estudados. Após 120 minutos de incubação, verificou-se maior porcentual (P<0,05) de células com motilidade total e progressiva nas amostras do T2. Conclui-se que a adição de trolox após descongelação do sêmen equino preserva a motilidade total e progressiva dos espermatozoides submetidos à incubação a 37ºC durante 120 minutos.

Abstract
CVD is a major cause of mortality and morbidity in the Western world. In recent years its importance has expanded internationally and it is believed that by 2020 it will be the biggest cause of mortality in the world, emphasising the importance to prevent or minimise this increase. A beneficial role for vitamins in CVD has long been explored but the data are still inconsistent. While being supported by observational studies, randomised controlled trials have not yet supported a role for vitamins in primary or secondary prevention of CVD and have in some cases even indicated increased mortality in those with pre-existing late-stage atherosclerosis. The superiority of combination therapy over single supplementation has been suggested but this has not been confirmed in trials. Studies have indicated that beta-carotene mediates pro-oxidant effects and it has been suggested that its negative effects may diminish the beneficial effects mediated by the other vitamins in the supplementation cocktail. The trials that used a combination of vitamins that include beta-carotene have been disappointing. However, vitamin E and vitamin C have in combination shown long-term anti-atherogenic effects but their combined effect on clinical endpoints has been inconsistent. Studies also suggest that vitamins would be beneficial to individuals who are antioxidant-deficient or exposed to increased levels of oxidative stress, for example, smokers, diabetics and elderly patients, emphasising the importance of subgroup targeting. Through defining the right population group and the optimal vitamin combination we could potentially find a future role for vitamins in CVD.

Abstract
Eggs high in n-6 PUFA, predominant in Western markets, were found to increase blood LDL oxidation, suggesting a new health concern beyond raising cholesterol. Protective composition was explored by increasing egg antioxidants and MUFA and reducing n-6 PUFA. Lag times to plasma LDL oxidation were significantly shortened with two eggs/day of high-PUFA compositions compared to a low-egg (2-4/week) regime, by 28.8% following "HPUFA-regular" ( p < 0.01) and by 27.2% following antioxidant-fortified "HPUFA-HAOX" ( p < 0.01). However, two "HMUFA-HAOX" eggs/day with reduced egg n-6 PUFA FA% (LA by 30.7%) and PUFA:MUFA ratio (LA:OA by 45.8%) plus increased antioxidants (vitamin E 500%, carotenoids 260%), resulting in increased plasma OA 33.3%, vitamin E 22.4%, and carotenoids 55.0% ( p < 0.01), were associated with lag-time only 6.6% shorter than low-egg (NS). Among health-oriented egg modifications, here for the first time they reduced associated LDL oxidization, consistent with anti-inflammation and antioxidant paradigms, warranting further research on functional advantages of antioxidative egg composition.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Animal and physiological research as well as observational studies suggest that antioxidant supplements may improve survival. OBJECTIVES To assess the effect of antioxidant supplements on mortality in primary or secondary prevention randomised clinical trials. SEARCH STRATEGY We searched The Cochrane Library (Issue 3, 2005), MEDLINE (1966 to October 2005), EMBASE (1985 to October 2005), and the Science Citation Index Expanded (1945 to October 2005). We scanned bibliographies of relevant publications and wrote to pharmaceutical companies for additional trials. SELECTION CRITERIA We included all primary and secondary prevention randomised clinical trials on antioxidant supplements (beta-carotene, vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, and selenium) versus placebo or no intervention. Included participants were either healthy (primary prevention trials) or had any disease (secondary prevention trials). DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS Three authors extracted data. Trials with adequate randomisation, blinding, and follow-up were classified as having a low risk of bias. Random-effects and fixed-effect meta-analyses were performed. Random-effects meta-regression analyses were performed to assess sources of intertrial heterogeneity. MAIN RESULTS Sixty-seven randomised trials with 232,550 participants were included. Forty-seven trials including 180,938 participants had low risk of bias. Twenty-one trials included 164,439 healthy participants. Forty-six trials included 68111 participants with various diseases (gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, neurological, ocular, dermatological, rheumatoid, renal, endocrinological, or unspecified). Overall, the antioxidant supplements had no significant effect on mortality in a random-effects meta-analysis (relative risk [RR] 1.02, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.99 to 1.06), but significantly increased mortality in a fixed-effect model (RR 1.04, 95% CI 1.02 to 1.06). In meta-regression analysis, the risk of bias and type of antioxidant supplement were the only significant predictors of intertrial heterogeneity. In the trials with a low risk of bias, the antioxidant supplements significantly increased mortality (RR 1.05, 95% CI 1.02 to 1.08). When the different antioxidants were assessed separately, analyses including trials with a low risk of bias and excluding selenium trials found significantly increased mortality by vitamin A (RR 1.16, 95% CI 1.10 to 1.24), beta-carotene (RR 1.07, 95% CI 1.02 to 1.11), and vitamin E (RR 1.04, 95% CI 1.01 to 1.07), but no significant detrimental effect of vitamin C (RR 1.06, 95% CI 0.94 to 1.20). Low-bias risk trials on selenium found no significant effect on mortality (RR 0.91, 95% CI 0.76 to 1.09). AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS We found no evidence to support antioxidant supplements for primary or secondary prevention. Vitamin A, beta-carotene, and vitamin E may increase mortality. Future randomised trials could evaluate the potential effects of vitamin C and selenium for primary and secondary prevention. Such trials should be closely monitored for potential harmful effects. Antioxidant supplements need to be considered medicinal products and should undergo sufficient evaluation before marketing.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of high-dose vitamin E supplementation (1200 mg/day) on reducing both microalbuminuria (MA) and oxidative stress in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) and persistent MA. METHODS We performed a 12-month, randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind cross-over trial in ten Caucasian young adults (7m/3f; mean age 18.87 +/- 2.91 years) with T1DM and persistent MA. At baseline and at end of the treatment period, determination of albumin excretion rate (AER) and HbA(1c) and evaluation of the oxidant/antioxidant status were performed. RESULTS At the beginning of the study, AER and HbA(1c) were not significantly different between the vitamin E and placebo group. No differences in terms of oxidant and antioxidant status were found between the two groups. This was associated with no significantly different urinary VEGF and TGF-beta levels. After 6 months, no significant differences in AER were observed between the two groups (p = 0.59). However, plasma and LDL-vitamin E content were significantly higher in the vitamin E group compared to the placebo group (p = 0.0001 and p = 0.004, respectively). This was associated with a significantly longer lag phase (p = 0.002) and lower MDA (p = 0.049). However, no statistically significant differences were detected in terms of VEGF and TGF-beta urinary levels. CONCLUSION These data demonstrate that high-dose vitamin E supplementation reduces markers of oxidative stress and improves antioxidant defence in young patients with T1DM. However, although it positively affects the oxidant/antioxidant status, vitamin E supplementation does not reduce AER in patients with T1DM and persistent MA.

Abstract
Vanadium toxicity is a challenging problem to the health professionals and a cutting-edge medical problem. Vanadium has been recognized as industrial hazards that adversely affect human and animal reproductive health. Since testicular function is exquisitely susceptible to reactive-oxygen species, the present study elucidates the possible involvement of oxidative stress in vanadium-induced testicular toxicity and the prophylactic effects of vitamin E acetate against such adverse effects of vanadium. The study also characterizes the effects of vanadium on rat adrenal steroidogenesis and determines the underlying mechanisms of testicular and adrenal interactions in response to vanadium exposure. Significantly reduced sperm count associated with decreased serum testosterone and gonadotropins level in the vanadium-injected group of rats compared to control substantially proves the ongoing damaging effects of vanadium-induced ROS on developing germ cells. This is in turn reflected in the appreciable increase in testicular lipid peroxidation level and decline in the activities of steroidogenic and antioxidant enzymes. However, oral administration of vitamin E acetate could protect testes from the toxic effects of vanadium. Vanadium also results in adrenocortical hyperactivity, as evidenced by the elevated secretion of glucocorticoids, adrenal gland hypertrophy and increased activity of adrenal Delta(5)3beta-HSD. However, reversibility of these alterations in adrenocortical activities was vividly reflected after vitamin E acetate supplementation. All these studies reveal that oxidative stress is the major mechanism of health deterioration and that vanadium can act as a stressor metal causing chronic stress effects through excitation of hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal axis. However antioxidant support by vitamin E acetate may provide significant protection.

Abstract
The oxidized low density lipoprotein (LDL) hypothesis of atherosclerosis proposes that LDL undergoes oxidation in the interstitial fluid of the arterial wall. We have shown that aggregated (vortexed) nonoxidized LDL was taken up by J774 mouse macrophages and human monocyte-derived macrophages and oxidized intracellularly, as assessed by the microscopic detection of ceroid, an advanced lipid oxidation product. Confocal microscopy showed that the ceroid was located in the lysosomes. To confirm these findings, J774 macrophages were incubated with acetylated LDL, which is internalized rapidly to lysosomes, and then incubated (chase incubation) in the absence of any LDL. The intracellular levels of oxysterols, measured by HPLC, increased during the chase incubation period, showing that LDL must have been oxidized inside the cells. Furthermore, we found that this oxidative modification was inhibited by lipid-soluble antioxidants, an iron chelator taken up by fluid-phase pinocytosis and the lysosomotropic drug chloroquine, which increases the pH of lysosomes. The results indicate that LDL oxidation can occur intracellularly, most probably within lysosomes.

Abstract
Elevated concentrations of fasting and non-fasting triacylglycerol-rich lipoproteins (TRL) as well as oxidative changes of lipoproteins may increase the risk of ischaemic heart disease. To compare the effects of different diets rich in unsaturated fatty acids on the concentrations andin vitrooxidation of fasting and postprandial lipoproteins eighteen males consumed diets enriched with rapeseed oil (RO), olive oil (OO), or sunflower-seed oil (SO) in randomised order for periods of 3 weeks followed by a RO test meal. In the postprandial state the concentrations of cholesterol and triacylglycerol (TAG) in TRL were higher after consumption of OO compared with RO and SO (P<0·04), possibly related to differences in the fasting state. The propagation rates for VLDL and LDL oxidation were higher in the postprandial compared with the fasting state irrespective of diet. In the fasting state, the propagation rates were highest after SO (P<0·001), and in the postprandial state, SO gave rise to a shorter VLDL lag time (P=0·03) and a higher propagation rate than OO consumption (P=0·04). Overall, the SO diet resulted in a higher postprandial propagation rate of LDL (P<0·001) compared with RO and OO, while there was no effect of diet on LDL oxidation lag time. Our results suggest that RO and SO diets lower the postprandial cholesterol and TAG concentrations compared with OO, while RO and OO diets result in similar and lowerin vitrosusceptibility to oxidation of lipoproteins than SO.

Abstract
This study was performed to examine the postprandial effects of meals containing dietary fats, with their natural fatty acid composition and tocopherol content, on the plasma triacylglycerols (TG) and tocopherols and on the resistance of VLDL and LDL to oxidation. On six separate days eighteen healthy male subjects were given low-fat meals (LF) or the LF meals enriched with sunflower oil (SO), rapeseed oil (RO), olive oil (OO), palm oil (PO), or butter (B) in a crossover design. The fat-rich meals all resulted in similar postprandial TG responses while the LF test meal did not increase plasma TG level. The postprandial plasma fatty acid profile changed to resemble the fatty acid composition of the ingested test fat. The α-tocopherol:γ-tocopherol ratios in postprandial plasma and VLDL samples were greater than in the test fats. We found that the resistance of VLDL particles to oxidation in the postprandial state as assessed from lag time was increased after the PO-rich meal as compared with the SO-rich meal (P=0·018), and the propagation rate was greater after the SO- and RO-rich meals compared with the others (P<0·001). The resistance of LDL particles to oxidation was unaffected by the meals. In postprandial VLDL samples, the content of α-tocopherol was greater after the OO- and SO-rich meals compared with the meal rich in PO (P=0·034 and 0·042 respectively). The γ-tocopherol content of VLDL was highest after RO-meal as compared with all other test meals (P=0·0019), and higher after SO as compared with B (P=0·0148). Large individual differences were noted. In conclusion, meals enriched with different fats lead to the formation of VLDL particles with varying resistance to oxidation.

Abstract
The possibility of achieving blood-lipid-lowering characteristics of pig fat by increasing the content of unsaturated fat in pig feed was evaluated. Three pig feeding regimens were applied: basal feed (no added fat or vitamin E), basal feed + rapeseed oil (60 g/kg feed), and basal feed + rapeseed oil (60 g/kg) + vitamin E (200 mg/kg). Meat and meat products from the three pig groups were incorporated into diets providing 86 g pig fat/10 MJ. The diets were served to twelve healthy human male subjects for 3 weeks each in a randomised crossover design. The diets prepared from pigs fed rapeseed oil had a lower content of saturated fatty acids (approximately 9 v. 11 % of energy) and a higher content of polyunsaturated fatty acids (approximately 6 v. 4 % of energy) than the diet prepared from pigs fed the basal feed. Diets based on fat from pigs fed the rapeseed oil resulted in significantly lower (approximately 4 %, P = 0·019) total serum cholesterol concentration compared with the diet from pigs fed the basal feed. No differences were observed in LDL-, HDL- or VLDL-cholesterol, or in triacylglycerol or VLDL-triacylglycerol concentrations. Addition of vitamin E to the pig feed resulted in only a minor increase in vitamin E content in the human subjects' diet and the vitamin E content was low in all three pig diets. Plasma vitamin E concentration in the human subjects at the end of the period with diets from pigs fed rapeseed oil without vitamin E was significantly lower (P = 0·04) than in the other two diet periods. In conclusion, an increased content of rapeseed oil in pig feed changes the fatty acid composition of the pig fat in a way that has a potential to reduce blood cholesterol concentrations in human subjects. However, intake of pig fat with a higher content of unsaturated fatty acids needs to be matched by a higher dietary intake of vitamin E.

Abstract
Fish-oil supplementation can reduce circulating triacylglycerol (TG) levels and cardiovascular risk. This study aimed to assess independent associations between changes in platelet eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and fasting and postprandial (PP) lipoprotein concentrations and LDL oxidation status, following fish-oil intervention. Fifty-five mildly hypertriacylglycerolaemic (TG 1·5–4·0 mmol/l) men completed a double-blind placebo controlled cross over study, where individuals consumed 6 g fish oil (3 g EPA+DHA) or 6 g olive oil (placebo)/d for two 6-week intervention periods, with a 12-week wash-out period in between. Fish-oil intervention resulted in a significant increase in the platelet phospholipid EPA (+491 %,P<0·001) and DHA (+44 %,P<0·001) content and a significant decrease in the arachidonic acid (-10 %,P<0·001) and γ-linolenic acid (-24 %,P<0·001) levels. A 30 % increase inex vivoLDL oxidation (P<0·001) was observed. In addition, fish oil resulted in a significant decrease in fasting and PP TG levels (P<0·001), PP non-esterified fatty acid (NEFA) levels, and in the percentage LDL as LDL-3 (P=0·040), and an increase in LDL-cholesterol (P=0·027). In multivariate analysis, changes in platelet phospholipid DHA emerged as being independently associated with the rise in LDL-cholesterol, accounting for 16 % of the variability in this outcome measure (P=0·030). In contrast, increases in platelet EPA were independently associated with the reductions in fasting (P=0·046) and PP TG (P=0·023), and PP NEFA (P=0·015), explaining 15–20 % and 25 % of the variability in response respectively. Increases in platelet EPA+DHA were independently and positively associated with the increase in LDL oxidation (P=0·011). EPA and DHA may have differential effects on plasma lipids in mildly hypertriacylglycerolaemic men.

Abstract
Prostate cancer is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer and the third leading fatal cancer in American men. Comprehensive studies from human epidemiological studies, animal tumor models, and cellular molecular levels suggested that alpha-vitamin E and its derivatives possess remarkable chemopreventive and chemotherapeutic against prostate cancer. This chapter details the facts of alpha-vitamin E and its nonantioxidant functions in prostate cancer, focuses on the biological mechanisms for the alpha-vitamin E and its ester analogue, alpha-vitamin E succinate (VES), in prevention and therapy of prostate cancer, and raises specific questions that remain for intensive investigation in the future.

Abstract
Heart disease is the number one cause of death in the United States and has long been recognized to be multifactorial. A growing body of evidence suggests that not only free radical-mediated reactions but also inflammatory responses play major roles in atherogenesis. Vitamin E has both antioxidant and antiinflammatory properties and is the most widely studied vitamin in clinical trials and thus will be the primary example used in this review. Clinical trials of vitamin E efficacy, in hindsight, have been overly optimistic in their expectation that a vitamin could reverse poor dietary habits and a sedentary lifestyle as well as provide benefit beyond that of pharmaceutical agents in treating heart disease. However, it is also apparent that most Americans do not consume dietary amounts adequate to meet established vitamin E requirements. In response to oxidative stressors, vitamin E can decrease biomarkers of lipid peroxidation, is itself killed, and requires optimal vitamin C status to function most effectively. Thus, adequate vitamin E intakes are clearly needed, but what is adequate for what function has yet to be defined. It is noteworthy that in most trials, biomarkers were not used nor were oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation markers used or plasma vitamin E concentrations measured.

Abstract
Naringenin is a naturally occurring citrus flavanone, which has been reported to have a wide range of pharmacological properties. The present work was carried out to evaluate the effect of naringenin on antioxidant and lipid peroxidation status in liver of oxytetracycline-intoxicated rats. Intraperitonial administration of oxytetracycline 200 mg/kg for 15 days resulted a significant elevation in serum hepatospecific markers such as aspartate transaminase, alanine transaminase, alkaline phosphatase, lactate dehydrogenase, and bilirubin and the levels of lipid peroxidation markers (thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and lipid hydroperoxides) in liver. Oxytetracycline also caused a significant reduction in the activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, reduced glutathione (GSH), vitamin C and vitamin E in liver. Oral administration of naringenin (50 mg/kg b.w.t.) with oxytetracycline significantly decreased the activities of serum aspartate transaminase, alanine transaminase, alkaline phosphatase, lactate dehydrogenase and the levels of bilirubin along with significant decrease in the levels of lipid peroxidation markers in the liver. In addition, naringenin significantly increased the activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase and GSH peroxidase as well as the level of GSH, vitamin C and vitamin E in liver of the oxytetracycline-treated rats. Our results demonstrate that naringenin exhibited antioxidant property and decrease the lipid peroxidation against oxytetracycline-induced oxidative stress in liver.

Abstract
Oxidization of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) particles leads to formation of atherosclerotic lesions and increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) via a complex cascade of biochemical events occurring mostly within the arterial wall. Multiple dietary factors impact LDL oxidation levels, such as fat-rich meals, hyper- and hypocaloric diets, and specific nutrients (vitamins E, C, and beta-carotene; mono- and polyunsaturated fatty acids; and polyphenolic compounds). These basic nutrients are naturally present at high concentrations, individually or in combinations, in common foods (fruits/vegetables, vegetable oils, red wine, soy, fish, tea); in turn, these foods are the main components of well-defined diets (Mediterranean, East Asian, balanced vegetarian) that display protective action against LDL oxidation and potentially against CVD. For most nutrients, however, both positive and negative evidence exists as to the extent of their antioxidant properties and protection against risk of CVD, prompting caution in the interpretation of data reports and health claims of advertised antioxidant products.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to investigate the dose-dependent effects of RRR-alpha-tocopherol supplementation in coronary heart disease (CHD) patients and healthy subjects on plasma alpha-tocopherol levels, plasma lipoprotein distribution, LDL oxidation, and inflammatory plasma markers. METHODS 12 patients with coronary heart disease and 12 healthy subjects were supplemented with increasing dosages of RRR-alpha-tocopherol at 100, 200 and 400 mg/day for a period of 3 weeks per dose. Lipoproteins were separated by FPLC and ultracentrifugation. Alpha-tocopherol was measured by HPLC. Resistance of LDL to oxidation was determined by reading the absorption at 234 nm after CuCl2-induced oxidation. Clinical chemistry and inflammatory markers were measured on automated analysis systems. RESULTS Plasma alpha-tocopherol concentrations at baseline were comparable between CHD-patients and healthy subjects (21.7 +/- 4.7 micromol/L and 25.8 +/- 7.6 micromol/L, respectively). CHD-patients showed a significant increase (59%) of plasma alpha-tocopherol concentrations to 34.6 +/- 9.8 micromol/L at a dosage of 100 mg/day RRR-alpha-tocopherol, whereas healthy subjects showed a significant (54%) increase to 39.7 +/- 6.1 micromol/L only with 400 mg/day RRR-alpha-tocopherol. In addition, CHD-patients showed a significantly increased enrichment of alpha-tocopherol in VLDL. Supplementation (200 mg/day) caused a significant decrease of the acute phase plasma proteins C-reactive protein (CRP) (-65%) and fibrinogen (-24%). CONCLUSION Our data demonstrate that CHD-patients require lower dosages of alpha-tocopherol supplementation than healthy subjects to exert biological effects on plasma lipoproteins and acute phase response.
