Abstract
Widespread exposure to organophosphorus flame retardants (OPFRs) has been observed in the general population. Emerging studies have revealed OPFRs possess endocrine-disturbing properties. The present study aims to assess the association between urinary metabolites of OPFRs, BMI, and serum lipid profiles. Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2017-2018 were obtained, with 1334 adults enrolled in the current study. Urinary concentrations of bis (1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (BCIPP), bis(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (BCEP), bis(1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate (BDCPP), dibutyl phosphate (DBUP), and diphenyl phosphate (DPHP) were quantified to assess OPFR exposure. Covariate-adjusted linear and logistic regression models were conducted to explore the associations between log2-transformed concentrations of OPFR metabolites, BMI, obesity, and serum lipid profiles. Stratified analyses were performed to assess the heterogeneity of associations by age, gender, race, etc. Positive associations were found between OPFR exposure and the risk of obesity. The multivariate linear analysis indicated that a one-unit increase in log2-transformed urinary concentrations of BCEP and BDCPP was associated with 0.27 (95% CI: 0.02-0.52, p = 0.0338) and 0.56 (95% CI: 0.25-0.87, p = 0.0004) higher BMI value, respectively. One log2-unit increase in urinary BCEP and BDCPP concentrations was associated with 1.1-fold (95% CI: 1.02-1.18, p = 0.0096) and 1.19-fold (95% CI: 1.09-1.30, p = 0.0001) risk for developing obesity. Furthermore, the non-linear relationship between exposure to OPFRs and obesity was identified. Additionally, multivariable linear regression showed that urinary DPHP concentrations were inversely correlated with serum triglyceride (TG) levels (β = -7.41, 95% CI: -12.13 to -2.68, p = 0.0022). However, no other OPFR metabolites were found to be significantly statistically associated with serum lipid levels after adjusting for potential confounders. In conclusion, environmental exposure to OPFRs might contribute to obesity and dysregulated TG concentrations in adults. Future prospective research is warranted to confirm the causal relationship between metabolites of OPFRs and obesity.

Abstract
AIM To assess the retinal thickness and fundus blood flow density changes in chest pain patients with dyslipidemia using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). METHODS All subjects with chest pain as the main symptom accepted a comprehensive ophthalmological examination. According to the serum lipid levels, the participants were divided into the control group and the dyslipidemia group. The retina thickness and fundus blood flow density were determined using OCTA. RESULTS The study enrolled 87 left eyes from 87 adults with dyslipidemia and 87 left eyes from age- and sex-matched participants without dyslipidemia. The retina of dyslipidemia subjects was significantly thinner than that of the controls in the inferior (P=0.004 and P=0.014, respectively) and temporal (P=0.015 and P=0.019, respectively) regions, both inner and outer layers. In terms of blood flow density in the macula or optic disk, there was a decreasing trend in the dyslipidemia group compared with the control group, especially in the inferior and temporal regions. CONCLUSION Dyslipidemia may contribute to the decrease in retinal thickness and fundus blood flow density. Further validation of the association between abnormal lipid metabolism and fundus microcirculation alterations needs to be carried out in chest pain patients.

Abstract
Lipid metabolism may be involved in the development of endocrine drug resistance in ER-positive (ER+) breast cancer (BC). This study aimed to investigate the relationship between serum lipid levels, risk stratification of dyslipidemia, and endocrine resistance. We collected the data from 166 ER + breast cancer patients who received endocrine therapy (ET). 73 of 166 patients (44.0%)developed endocrine resistance. Univariate and multivariate COX regression were conducted to explore the potential factors affecting endocrine resistance in BC. The clinical T stage, mean serum lipid levels in ET progression-free-survival (total cholesterol, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, apolipoprotein A, and triglycerides/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol) were correlated with endocrine resistance (R = 0.214, P = .006; R = 0.268, P < .001; R = 0.182, P = .019;R = 0.197, P = .011; R = 0.211, P = .006; R = 0.159, P < .041). Clinical stage, triglycerides (TG) in endocrine therapy progression-free-survival (ePFS) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) in ePFS were independent predictors of endocrine resistance (P < .05; OR = 1.406, CI 1.108-1.783, P < .05; OR = 1.309, CI 1.026-1.669, P < .05, respectively). Moreover, in clinical stage III, the ePFS was worse in patients with in the high-risk and extremely high-risk group the median ePFS time was 8.0 months (95% CI: 1.140-14.860, P < .05). Clinical stage, TG in ePFS and LDL-C in ePFS may act as a new predictive biomarker for endocrine resistance in BC. The lipid levels of BC patients should be closely monitored throughout the treatment process, and patients with dyslipidemia should receive treatment immediately.

Abstract
Purpose Serum lipids were reported to be the prognostic factors of various cancers, but their prognostic value in small cell lung cancer (SCLC) patients remains unclear. This study investigated the relationship between lipid profiles and clinical outcomes in extensive-stage (ES) SCLC by establishing a predictive risk classification model. Patients and Methods We retrospectively analyzed the prognostic values of pretreatment serum lipids and their derivatives in patients with a confirmed diagnosis ES-SCLC. Independent factors of progression-free survival (PFS) were determined by univariate and multivariate cox analysis. Then, prognostic nomograms were established, of which predictive performance was evaluated by concordance index (C-index), calibration curves, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves, and decision curve analyses (DCA). Results A total of 158 patients was included in this study. Four optimal PFS-related factors, total cholesterol (TC) ≥ 5.30, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) > 1.30, triglycerides (TG)/HDL-C > 2.18, and ki67 expression > 70%, were included to construct the predictive nomogram. The C-indexes in training and validation sets were 0.758 and 0.792, respectively. ROC curves, calibration plots, and DCA all suggested favorable discrimination and predictive ability. Besides, the nomogram also performed better predictive ability than ki67 expression. Nomogram-related risk score divided the patients into two groups with significant progression disparities. Conclusion The promising prognostic nomogram based on lipid parameters could help clinicians to conveniently and accurately evaluate the prognosis of ES-SCLC patients and identify high-risk groups, so as to formulate individualized therapeutic regimens and follow-up strategies in time.

Abstract
Background The association between dyslipidaemia and breast cancer remains controversial, especially regarding the dynamic changes in lipid levels. Objectives This study aimed to elucidate the role of serum lipid levels and the changes in disease outcomes in patients with breast cancer. Methods The lipid profiles of patients with breast cancer who underwent surgery between 2013 and 2017 were retrospectively reviewed. The lipid profiles comprised triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL), and low-density lipoprotein. Serum lipid levels were categorized into three groups based on the tertiles. The Wilcoxon test was used to compare changes in serum lipid levels during follow-up. Hazard ratios (HRs) for survival outcomes were estimated using a multivariate Cox regression analysis. Results A total of 3499 women diagnosed with nonmetastatic invasive breast cancer were included in this study, with a median follow-up of 60.4 months. We confirmed that each 1-tertile increased TG at baseline [HR = 1.19, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.02-1.39] and 1-year follow-up (HR = 1.46, 95% CI 1.07-1.98) led to worse relapse-free survival (RFS). A lower risk of disease relapse was observed with each 1-tertile upregulation in HDL at 1-year follow-up (HR = 0.72, 95% CI 0.56-0.92). Receiving systemic therapies tends to induce an elevation in plasma lipid levels 1 year after surgery, especially in terms of TG. Regarding the prognostic value of dynamic changes in lipid levels, patients with sustained high levels of TG had poorer RFS (HR = 1.90, 95% CI 1.16-3.11), whereas maintaining high levels of HDL led to better survival (HR = 0.60, 95% CI 0.37-0.97). Conclusion High TG at baseline and during follow-up was associated with worse disease outcome in early breast cancer patients. Systemic treatment would lead to an elevation of serum lipid levels. Patients with sustained high HDL level at 1-year follow-up after surgery had a superior prognosis, warranting further clinical evaluation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hyperlipidemia may be part of the important mechanisms for the development of idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSNHL). AIMS So the purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between changes in blood lipid levels and ISSNHL. MATERIALS AND METHODS We enrolled 90 ISSNHL patients in our hospital using a retrospective study design from 2019.1 to 2021.12. Blood levels of total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), and low-density lipoprotein (LDL-C). Hearing recovery was analyzed using the chi-square test and one-way analysis of variance (ANONA). Univariate and multifactorial Logstic retrospective analyses to establish the relationship between LDL-C/HDL-C ratio and hearing recovery after adjustment for potential confounding factors. RESULTS In our study, 65 (72.2%) patients had their hearing recovered. All group analyses and three group analyses (i.e. Excluding the no-recovery group) found that LDL/HDL was on an upward trend from complete recovery to a slight recovery group and strongly associated with hearing recovery. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis found high levels of LDL and LDL/HDL in the partial hearing recovery group, relative to the full hearing recovery group. Curve fitting intuitively demonstrates the influence of blood lipids on prognosis. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that LDL. TC, TC/HDL, and LDL/HDL concentrations may be closely related to the pathogenesis of ISSNHL. SIGNIFICANCE Improving the relevant lipid test at the time of admission to the hospital has good clinical significance for improving the prognosis of ISSNHL.

Abstract
Background Asian Indians have an increased susceptibility to type 2 diabetes and premature coronary artery disease. Nuts, like almonds, are rich in unsaturated fat and micronutrients with known health benefits. Objectives This study aimed to assess the efficacy of almonds for reduction of insulin resistance and improving lipid profile in overweight Asian Indian adults. Methods This parallel-arm, randomized, controlled trial was conducted in Chennai, India on 400 participants aged 25-65 years with a body mass index ≥ 23 kg/m2. The intervention group received 43 g of almonds/day for 12 weeks, while the control group was advised to consume a customary diet but to avoid nuts. Anthropometric, clinical, and dietary data were assessed at periodic intervals. Glucose tolerance, serum insulin, glycated hemoglobin, C-peptide and lipid profile were assessed at baseline and end of the study. Insulin resistance (homeostasis assessment model-HOMA IR) and oral insulin disposition index (DIo) were calculated. Results A total of 352 participants completed the study. Significant improvement was seen in DIo [mean (95% CI) = + 0.7 mmol/L (0.1, 1.3); p = 0.03], HOMA IR (-0.4 (-0.7, -0.04; p = 0.03) and total cholesterol (-5.4 mg/dl (-10.2, -0.6); p = 0.03) in the intervention group compared to the control group. Incremental area under the curve (IAUC) and mean amplitude of glycemic excursion (MAGE) assessed using continuous glucose monitoring systems were also significantly lower in the intervention group. Dietary 24-h recalls showed a higher significant reduction in carbohydrate and increase in mono unsaturated fatty acid (MUFA) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) intake in the intervention group compared to the control group. Conclusion Daily consumption of almonds increased the intake of MUFA with decrease in carbohydrate calories and decreases insulin resistance, improves insulin sensitivity and lowers serum cholesterol in Asian Indians with overweight/obesity. These effects in the long run could aid in reducing the risk of diabetes and other cardiometabolic disease.

Abstract
Background Lower cholesterol levels are associated with increased mortality in heart failure (HF) patients. Remnant cholesterol corresponds to all cholesterol not found in high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL). The prognostic role of remnant cholesterol in HF remains unknown. Objective To reveal the relationship between the baseline remnant cholesterol level and all-cause mortality in HF patients. Methods This study enrolled 2,823 patients hospitalized for HF. Kaplan-Meier analysis, Cox regression, C-statistic, net reclassification improvement (NRI), and integrated discrimination improvement (IDI) were used to evaluate the prognostic value of remnant cholesterol for all-cause mortality in HF. Results The mortality rate was lowest in the fourth quartile of remnant cholesterol, which had an adjusted hazard ratio (HR) for death of 0.56 [HR: 0.39, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.46-0.68, p < 0.001] relative to the first quartile. After adjustment, a one-unit increase in the level of remnant cholesterol was associated with a 41% decrease in the risk of all-cause mortality (HR: 0.59, 95% CI: 0.47-0.73, p < 0.001). A refinement in risk prediction was observed after adding remnant cholesterol quartile to the original model (ΔC-statistic = 0.010, 95% CI: 0.003-0.017; NRI = 0.036, 95% CI: 0.003-0.070; IDI = 0.025, 95% CI: 0.018-0.033; all p < 0.05). Conclusion Low remnant cholesterol levels are associated with increased all-cause mortality in HF patients. The addition of the remnant cholesterol quartile improved the predictive value over traditional risk factors. Clinical Trial Registration ClinicalTrials.gov, Unique Identifier: NCT02664818.

Abstract
Background A growing number of research strongly suggest that metabolic syndrome and dyslipidemia contribute to the establishment of a pro-inflammatory state in asthma, according to accumulating data. However, the majority of recent research has focused on the association between lipids and asthma in children and adolescents, with contradictory findings. Consequently, we analyzed the relationship between serum lipid and blood eosinophil counts using data from the NHANES in the USA. Methods After screening the individuals from the 2011 to 2018 NHANES survey, a total of 2,544 out of 39156 participants were eligible for our study. The potential association was discussed using the linear regression model, XGBoost algorithm model, generalized additive model, and two-piecewise linear regression model. In addition, we ran stratified analysis to identify specific demographics. Results After adjusting for covariates, the result indicated that blood eosinophil counts decreased by 45.68 (-68.56, -22.79)/uL for each additional unit of HDL-C (mmol/L). But serum LDL-C, total cholesterol or triglyceride was not correlated with blood eosinophil counts. Furthermore, we used machine learning of the XGBoost model to determine LDL-C, age, BMI, triglyceride, and HDL-C were the five most critical variables in the blood eosinophil counts. The generalized additive model and two-piecewise linear regression model were used to further identify linear relationship between the serum HDL-C and blood eosinophil counts. Conclusions Our study elucidated a negative and linear correlation between serum HDL-C and blood eosinophil counts among American asthmatic adults, suggesting that serum HDL-C levels might be associated with the immunological condition of asthmatic adults. There was no correlation between serum LDL-C, total cholesterol, or triglyceride levels and blood eosinophil counts.

Abstract
Objective Associations between serum lipids and their individual components with
premenopausal breast cancer risk are unclear. This meta-analysis summarized
the literature on serum lipids and premenopausal breast cancer risk to
elucidate their relationship. Methods Eligible studies were identified by searching the PubMed, Embase, China
National Knowledge Infrastructure, and Wanfang databases until 31 December
2020. Standardized mean difference (SMD) scores with 95% confidence
intervals (95%CIs) were used to assess the impact of serum lipids on
premenopausal breast cancer risk. The I2 statistic was calculated
to measure the percentage of heterogeneity, and Egger’s test was performed
to measure publication bias. Results Thirteen studies were included. The SMD scores of triglycerides (TG) and
low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) were 12.90 (95%CI: 7.19–18.61)
and 31.43 (95%CI: 8.72–54.15), respectively. The SMD scores of total
cholesterol (TC) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) were not
significantly different between the groups. The included studies were highly
heterogeneous. There were no publication biases found in TC, LDL-C, or HDL-C
analyses, whereas publication bias was present in the TG analysis. Conclusions TG and LDL-C were higher in premenopausal breast cancer patients than in
women without breast cancer. However, no significant differences were found
in TC or HDL-C levels.

Abstract
L-arabinose is a good and healthy food additive. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of L-arabinose in a mouse model of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) induced by exposure to a high-fat diet (HFD) and streptozotocin (STZ). The model mice received L-arabinose at 20 and 60 mg (kg body weight [bw])-1 d-1 , metformin at 300 mg (kg bw)-1 d-1 (positive control) or sterile water (control) via oral gavage. Compared with the model group, mice treated with L-arabinose exhibited attenuated symptoms of diabetes mellitus, including a slower rate of body weight loss, increased homeostasis model assessment of β-cell function index levels, decreased blood glucose, alleviation of steatosis, and repair of pancreatic islet cells. L-arabinose also exerted an anti-inflammatory effect and partially mitigated dyslipidemia. A 16S-rRNA sequence analysis of the gut microbiota revealed that at the phylum level, treatment with L-arabinose significantly reduced the ratio of Firmicutes to Bacteroidetes due to a decreased relative abundance of Firmicutes; at the genus level, it reversed the increase in the relative abundance of Allobaculum and the decrease abundance of Oscillospira caused by exposure to an HFD and STZ. And the model mice received L-arabinose at 20 mg (kg bw)-1 d-1 had a better effect on improving T2DM than the high-dose group supplemented L-arabinose at 60 mg (kg bw)-1 d-1 . These results strongly suggest L-arabinose as an excellent candidate supplement to prevent or treat T2DM. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: L-arabinose, xylitol and sucralose are well-known substitutes for sucrose. L-arabinose has been reported to have beneficial effects on hyperglycemia, glycemic index, and fat accumulation. In this study, we found that low-dose (20 mg (kg bw)-1 d-1 ) supplementation of L-arabinose significantly improved glucose intolerance and gut microbiota incoordination in T2DM caused by HFD and STZ.

Abstract
Blackcurrant extract (BCE) ameliorates dyslipidemia in menopausal model animals and in elderly women at a risk of dyslipidemia. However, it is unknown whether the daily intake of BCE can prevent lipid abnormalities in healthy individuals. Lipids are essential for the body, but they also cause arteriosclerosis. In this noncomparative pilot study, we examined the effects of BCE administered for 29 days on serum lipids in young healthy women. Blood samples were collected before and on days 4 and 29 after BCE intake, and 20 lipoprotein fractions in the serum were separated using a gel-permeation high-performance liquid chromatography method to measure the triacylglycerol and cholesterol levels in lipoproteins. There were no effects on lipids on day 4 of BCE intake, but the total cholesterol level decreased on day 29. Furthermore, the levels of total very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) cholesterol, small VLDL cholesterol, and large low-density lipoprotein cholesterol were significantly decreased. These results suggest that the daily intake of BCE has a hypocholesterolemic effect in healthy women, and that it is effective in preventing atherosclerosis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of the study was to investigate the changes and significance of serum fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) in children with primary nephrotic syndrome (PNS) and chronic renal failure. METHODS Pediatric patients with active PNS and normal renal function (the nephrotic syndrome group), pediatric patients with chronic renal failure (the renal failure group), and children who had healthy physical examinations (the control group) were included. The serum levels of FGF21, total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), high-density lipoprotein (HDL-C), and low-density lipoprotein (LDL-C) were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and the serum albumin and 24 h urine protein were measured in the PNS group. RESULTS Compared with the normal control group, the level of serum FGF21 in the PNS group and the renal failure group increased significantly (P < 0.05). The TC, TG, HDL-C, and LDL-C levels increased significantly in the PNS group (P < 0.05). The levels of TG and HDL-C increased significantly in the renal failure group (P < 0.05). The levels of TC, HDL-C, and LDL-C in the renal failure group were lower than those in the PNS group (P < 0.05). There was no significant difference in TG level between the two groups (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION The level of serum FGF21 may be correlated with the occurrence and development of nephrosis in children. The higher the level of serum FGF21, the more serious the renal injury.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To investigate the correlation between blood lipids and the prognosis of idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSNHL). METHODS We included 232 patients with ISSNHL at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Shanghai University from June 2015 to March 2017 using a prospective cohort study design. We collected information including age, gender, hypertension, diabetes, mellitus, vertigo, as well as the levels of blood total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), and low-density lipoproteins (LDL-C). We also recorded the ratio between the levels of low-density lipoproteins and the levels of high-density lipoproteins (LDL-C/HDL-C ratio). Correlations between the prognosis of ISSNHL and TC, TG, LDL-C, and LDL-C/HDL-C ratio were analyzed by univariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses. RESULTS The clinical effectiveness rate of patients with TC ranging from 5.2 to 6.2 mmol/L was significantly higher than that of patients with TC <5.2 mmol/L (P<0.001). No notable difference was found between patients with TC <5.2 mmol/L and patients with TC ≥6.2 mmol/L. The clinical effectiveness rate of patients in TG ranging from 1.7 mmol/L to 2.3 mmol/L was markedly higher than those in TG <1.7 mmol/L (P<0.001). No significant difference was found between patients with TG ranging from 2.3 to 5.6 mmol/L, TG ≥5.6 mmol/L, and TG <1.7 mmol/L. The clinical effectiveness rate of patients in LDL-C/HDL-C <1.5 was considerably higher than those in LDL-C/HDL-C ranging from 1.5 to 2.5, 2.5 to 3.5, and ≥3.5 (P<0.001). CONCLUSIONS Our findings indicated that TC, TG, and the LDL-C/HDL-C ratio are strongly associated with the prognosis of ISSNHL. These three indices could be recommended as independent markers to predict outcomes.

Abstract
The associations between obesity and Alzheimer's disease (AD) at different ages have been debated. Recent evidence implied the protective effects of metabolically healthy obesity on AD. We hypothesized that obesity and lipids could mitigate the detrimental impacts of AD pathological changes among metabolically healthy individuals in late life. In this study, a total of 604 metabolically healthy participants with normal cognition were included from the Chinese Alzheimer's Biomarker and LifestylE (CABLE) database. Multiple linear regression models were used to test the associations of body mass index (BMI) or lipids with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers after adjustment for age, gender, education, and Apolipoprotein E-ɛ4 (APOE-ɛ4). The results showed the lower CSF levels of total tau protein (t-tau: p = .0048) and phosphorylated tau protein (p-tau: p = .0035) in obese participants than in non-obese participants, even after correcting for covariates. Moreover in late life, higher BMI was associated with decreased CSF t-tau (β: -0.15, p = .0145) and p-tau (β: -0.17, p = .0052). As for lipids, higher levels of total cholesterol (TC) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) were associated with decreased CSF t-tau (TC: β: -0.16, p = .0115; LDL-C: β: -0.16, p = .0082) and p-tau (TC: β: -0.15, p = .0177; LDL-C: β: -0.14, p = .0225) in obese participants. Furthermore, these associations were only significant in participants with late-life obesity and APOE-ɛ4 non-carriers. Overall, in a cognitively normal population, we found metabolically healthy obesity and lipids in late life might be protective factors for neurodegenerative changes.

Abstract
We have previously reported negative energy balance and health benefits during an Alaska backcountry expeditionary hunting (ABEH) immersion in two males. The purpose of our present study was to increase the number of participants, include females, and evaluate macronutrient intake and serum lipids. Four men (age: 46 ± 6 year, BMI: 26 ± 1 kg/m2 ) and three women (age: 46 ± 11 year, BMI: 25 ± 3 kg/m2 ) were recruited. Doubly labeled water methodology and dietary recall were utilized to assess energy expenditure and energy intake, respectively. Data were collected during pre- and post-ABEH visits. Body composition was measured using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry and the cross-sectional area of skeletal muscle in the upper leg (XT), and intrahepatic lipid (IHL) was determined using magnetic resonance imaging and/or spectroscopy (MRI/MRS). Blood parameters were measured by LabCorp. Paired T-tests were used for statistical analysis. Data are reported as mean ± SD and considered significant at p < 0.05. Total energy intake was 7.7 ± 3.4 MJ/day and total energy expenditure was 17.4 ± 2.6 MJ/day, resulting in a negative energy balance of -9.7 ± 3.4 MJ/day. Protein intake(grams)/body weight(kilograms)/day was 1.0 ± 0.4. There were reductions in body weight (Δ-1.5 ± 0.7 kg), BMI (Δ-0.3 ± 0.2 kg/m2 ), fat mass (Δ-1.7 ± 0.9 kg), and IHL (Δ-0.3 ± 0.3% water peak). There were no changes in lean tissue mass (Δ0.6 ± 1.4 kg) or XT (Δ-1.3 ± 3.3 cm2 ). There were significant reductions in total cholesterol (Δ-44 ± 35 mg/dl), LDL-cholesterol (Δ-25 ± 14 mg/dl), VLDL-cholesterol (Δ-7 ± 7 mg/dl), and triglycerides (Δ-35 ± 33 mg/dl). The ABEH immersion resulted in considerable negative energy balance and provided comprehensive benefits in metabolic health without any reduction in skeletal muscle.

Abstract
Context: Panax notoginseng (Burk.) F.H. Chen (Araliaceae) preparations (PNP) are traditional Chinese medicines used as adjuvant therapeutics for diabetic kidney disease (DKD).Objective: To systematically review the efficacy of PNP as adjunct DKD therapy, including their effects on kidney function, serum lipid levels and fasting blood glucose levels.Methods: The databases PubMed, Embase, Medline, Cochrane Library, CINAHL, China Biology Medicine disc, Wanfang, VIP and China National Knowledge Infrastructure were systematically searched from the date of their inception until May 2019. Panax notoginseng, Panax notoginseng saponins, Lulutong, Xueshuantong and Xuesaitong were the key terms searched. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing the combined use of PNP and conventional medicines (CM) versus CM for DKD were included. Data were pooled using random or fixed effect models depending on heterogeneity.Results: In total, 24 RCTs involving 1918 participants were analysed. Adjunct PNP with CM was associated with reduction of albuminuria (MD -26.89 mg, 95% CI: -33.35 to -20.42), proteinuria (MD -0.32 g/24 h, 95% CI: -0.36 to -0.27), serum creatinine (MD -4.52 μmol/L, 95% CI: -8.71 to -0.32), total cholesterol (MD -1.56 mmol/L, 95% CI: -2.33 to -0.78), triglycerides (TG) (MD -0.56 mmol/L, 95% CI: -0.80 to -0.31) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (MD -0.94 mmol/L, 95% CI: -1.49 to -0.40) compared with CM.Conclusions: This is the first meta-analysis investigating adjuvant PNP therapy for DKD. PNP apparently exerted beneficial effects on kidney function and improved the metabolism of serum lipids by CM. Further, well-conducted, high-quality trials on DKD patients are needed to provide high-quality evidence.

Abstract
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) or non-alcoholic seatohepatitis (NASH) is one of the major health problems world wide, because of increased abdominal obesity. To date, specific and effective medications to treat or prevent NAFLD/NASH have not been established. To identify appropriate molecular targets for that purpose, suitable animal models of NAFLD/NASH have been explored. A choline-deficient amino acid-defined high fat diet (CDAHFD)-induced mouse model of NASH has been developed. However, its relevance to human NASH, including serum lipid profiles, have not been clearly defined. In this study, we have revealed that mice fed CDAHFD showed significantly lowerd serum total cholesterol and triglyceride (TG) levels, in addition to reduced body weight (BW). Furthermore, hepatic microsomal triglyceride transfer protein (MTP) expression was significantly downregulated in CDAHFD-fed mice. Thus, the current CDAHFD-fed mouse model has points that are distinct from human NAFLD/NASH, in general, which is based upon abdominal obesity.

Abstract
Type 2 diabetes is an epidemic public health issue worldwide. It is common among adults and is more severe among overweight and obese subjects. This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of a low-energy diet with and without oat bran and olive oil supplements on body mass index, blood pressure, and serum lipids in women with diabetes. It was conducted for three months among 78 participants after dividing them into six groups. Groups 2 to 6 were received low-energy diet (1,600 kcal/day), with or without oat bran (10 g/day) and olive oil (5 g/day) supplements. Weight, height, blood pressure, and serum lipids were measured. A low-energy diet with and without oat bran and olive oil supplements lowers body mass index in subjects by 0.9%-6.0% on average. It also lowers systolic and diastolic blood pressure by 1.0%-9.0% and 4.8%-12.6%, respectively. Serum triglycerides were declined in groups 2, 3, and 4 by 27.2%, 17.3%, and 1.7%, respectively, but not significantly. Total cholesterol was dropped significantly by 8.3% only when the low-energy diet was used with oat bran supplement among obese subjects, while LDL cholesterol was dropped significantly by 20.0% only when it was used with oat bran and olive oil supplements among subjects with high serum triglycerides. Proper control of type 2 diabetes among overweight and obese adults is needed to control cardiovascular complications. This could be accomplished by following a low-energy diet and incorporating healthy foods such as oat and olive oil into the usual diet.

Abstract
Apolipoproteins govern lipoprotein metabolism and are promising biomarkers of metabolic and cardiovascular diseases. Unlike immunoassays, MS enables the quantification and phenotyping of multiple apolipoproteins. Hence, here, we aimed to develop a LC-MS/MS assay that can simultaneously quantitate 18 human apolipoproteins [A-I, A-II, A-IV, A-V, B48, B100, C-I, C-II, C-III, C-IV, D, E, F, H, J, L1, M, and (a)] and determined apoE, apoL1, and apo(a) phenotypes in human plasma and serum samples. The plasma and serum apolipoproteins were trypsin digested through an optimized procedure and peptides were extracted and analyzed by LC-MS/MS. The method was validated according to standard guidelines in samples spiked with known peptide amounts. The LC-MS/MS results were compared with those obtained with other techniques, and reproducibility, dilution effects, and stabilities were also assessed. Peptide markers were successfully selected for targeted apolipoprotein quantification and phenotyping. After optimization, the assay was validated for linearity, lower limits of quantification, accuracy (biases: -14.8% to 12.1%), intra-assay variability [coefficients of variation (CVs): 1.5-14.2%], and inter-assay repeatability (CVs: 4.1-14.3%). Bland-Altman plots indicated no major statistically significant differences between LC-MS/MS and other techniques. The LC-MS/MS results were reproducible over five repeated experiments (CVs: 1.8-13.7%), and we identified marked differences among the plasma and serum samples. The LC-MS/MS assay developed here is rapid, requires only small sampling volumes, and incurs reasonable costs, thus making it amenable for a wide range of studies of apolipoprotein metabolism. We also highlight how this assay can be implemented in laboratories.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Although several studies have shown that interventions to lower blood lipid concentration may reduce the risk of coronary arterial disease and ischemic stroke, the correlation between serum lipid levels and hemorrhagic stroke remains controversial. To clarify any possible association between serum lipid and hematoma expansion, we examined various serum lipid indices in patients with and without early hematoma expansion. METHODS Data of 572 intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) patients from the cerebral small vessel disease cohort of Peking Union Medical College Hospital were retrospectively analyzed. Patients who finished the baseline brain computed tomography (CT) examination within 6 h post-ictus and the follow-up CT within 48 h after initial CT were included in the study. Hematoma expansion was delimited as an enlargement of hemorrhage volume over 33% or 12.5 mL between baseline and subsequent CT. Both uni- and multivariate logistic regression analyses were conducted to explore the association between early hematoma growth and various serum lipid indices, including triglycerides, total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), non-HDL-C, ratios of LDL-C/HDL-C and LDL-C/TC, as well as other demographic and clinical features. RESULTS Out of 157 patients included in the analysis, hematoma growth occurred in 45 (28.7%). Only higher baseline systolic blood pressure was found to be correlated with an increased risk of hematoma growth based on both univariate (odds ratio [OR] 1.014, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.002-1.026, P = .024) and multivariate logistic regression analyses (OR 1.022, 95%CI: 1.008-1.037, P = .003). No associations were detected between the various serum lipid indices examined and other clinical features with a likelihood of early hematoma growth between groups or within various subgroups defined by different characteristics including age, gender, baseline Glasgow Coma Scale score, systolic blood pressure, intraventricular extension, and hematoma location. CONCLUSIONS No association between various indices of serum lipid and hematoma growth was identified among patients and subgroups with spontaneous ICH in the Chinese population; these findings may help to guide lipid management after ICH. However, further multi-centered, larger scale studies are expected to verify our results.

Abstract
Background and Aim: Primary small cell carcinoma of the esophagus (SCCE) is a rarely aggressive disease characterized by rapid progression, widespread metastasis, and poor prognosis. This study was aimed to evaluate the prognostic significance of serum lipids for overall survival (OS) in SCCE patients. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed SCCE patients in a training cohort (61 patients) and validated them in a validation cohort (27 patients). These cases were collected from Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center from 2006 to 2017. Univariate and multivariate Cox survival analyses were performed to determine serum lipids as prognostic factors associated with the patient's OS. Time-dependent receiver operating characteristics (ROC) were used to compare predictive power of independent prognostic factors. The predictive accuracy and discriminative ability of the prognostic factors were measured by the concordance index (C-index) and decision curve, and were compared with the TNM stage system. Results: On multivariate analysis of the training cohort, independent factors for survival were gender, BAR (ApoB/ApoA-1) and TNM stage. The area under the curve (AUC) of BAR+TNM stage in the training cohort was higher than that of TNM stage for OS, and similar result was observed in the validation cohort. The c-index of BAR+TNM stage for predicting the OS was 0.655 (95% CI = 0.571-0.740), which was higher than that of TNM stage [0.614 (95% CI = 0.530-0.698)] in the training cohort. In the validation cohort, the C-index of the BAR+TNM stage for predicting OS was also higher than that of the TNM stage [0.688 (95% CI: 0.570~0.806) vs. (0.512; 95% CI: 0.392~0.632)]. In addition, decision curve analysis also showed that the predictive accuracy of BAR+TNM stage for OS was higher than TNM stage both in the training and the validation cohorts. Conclusions: BAR represents a promising prognostic indicator that might complement TNM stage in the prognosis of SCCE, and that warrant further assessment in large SCCE patient cohort.

Abstract
Cafestol and kahweol are natural diterpenes extracted from coffee beans. In addition to the effect of raising serum lipid, in vitro and in vivo experimental results have revealed that the two diterpenes demonstrate multiple potential pharmacological actions such as anti-inflammation, hepatoprotective, anti-cancer, anti-diabetic, and anti-osteoclastogenesis activities. The most relevant mechanisms involved are down-regulating inflammation mediators, increasing glutathione (GSH), inducing apoptosis of tumor cells and anti-angiogenesis. Cafestol and kahweol show similar biological activities but not exactly the same, which might due to the presence of one conjugated double bond on the furan ring of the latter. This review aims to summarize the pharmacological properties and the underlying mechanisms of cafestol-type diterpenoids, which show their potential as functional food and multi-target alternative medicine.

Abstract
Chemically-interesterified (CIE) fats are trans-fat free and are increasingly being used as an alternative to hydrogenated oils for food manufacturing industries to optimize their products' characteristics and nutrient compositions. The metabolic effects of CIE fats on insulin activity, lipids, and adiposity in humans are not well established. We investigated the effects of CIE fats rich in palmitic (C16:0, IEPalm) and stearic (C18:0, IEStear) acids on insulin resistance, serum lipids, apolipoprotein concentrations, and adiposity, using C16:0-rich natural palm olein (NatPO) as the control. We designed a parallel, double-blind clinical trial. Three test fats were used to prepare daily snacks for consumption with a standard background diet over a period of 8 weeks by three groups of a total of 85 healthy, overweight adult volunteers. We measured the outcome variables at weeks 0, 6, and at the endpoint of 8. After 8 weeks, there was no significant difference in surrogate biomarkers of insulin resistance in any of the IE fat diets (IEPalm and IEStear) compared to the NatPO diet. The change in serum triacylglycerol concentrations was significantly lower with the IEStear diet, and the changes in serum leptin and body fat percentages were significantly lower in the NatPO-diet compared to the IEPalm diet. We conclude that diets containing C16:0 and C18:0-rich CIE fats do not affect markers of insulin resistance compared to a natural C16:0-rich fat (NatPO) diet. Higher amounts of saturated fatty acids (SFAs) and longer chain SFAs situated at the sn-1,3 position of the triacylglycerol (TAG) backbones resulted in less weight gain and lower changes in body fat percentage and leptin concentration to those observed in NatPO and IEStear.

Abstract
Developmental programming by reduced maternal nutrition alters function in multiple offspring physiological systems, including lipid metabolism. We have shown that intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) leads to offspring cardiovascular dysfunction with an accelerated aging phenotype in our nonhuman primate, baboon model. We hypothesized age-advanced pericardial fat and blood lipid changes. In pregnancy and lactation, pregnant baboons ate ad lib (control) or 70% ad lib diet (IUGR). We studied baboon offspring pericardial lipid deposition with magnetic resonance imaging at 5-6 years (human equivalent 20-24 years), skinfold thickness, and serum lipid profile at 8-9 years (human equivalent 32-36 years), comparing values with a normative life-course baboon cohort, 4-23 years. Increased pericardial fat deposition occurred in IUGR males but not females. Female but not male total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein, and subcutaneous fat were increased with a trend of triglycerides increase. When comparing IUGR changes to values in normal older baboons, the increase in male apical pericardial fat was equivalent to advancing age by 6 years and the increase in female low-density lipoprotein to an increase of 3 years. We conclude that reduced maternal diet accelerates offspring lipid changes in a sex-dimorphic manner. The interaction between programming and accelerated lipogenesis warrants further investigation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Pregnancy is accompanied by profound changes in lipid metabolism. We aimed to assess whether effects of second trimester body mass index and maternal lipid concentrations are associated with an increased risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes. METHODS We investigated the serum levels of maternal lipids during the second trimester in pregnancy, and analyzed associations between the lipid levels and the risk of adverse pregnancy outcome. Seven hundred and seventy-four pregnant women were enrolled in this study between February 2016 and June 2016. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was conducted to estimate the relative risk between maternal lipids and adverse pregnancy outcome. RESULTS Compared with the control group, during the second trimester of pregnancy, BMI, TG, and Lp(a) were risk factors for gestational diabetes mellitus; middle trimester pregnancy BMI, Lp(a), and APO-B were risk factors for pre-eclampsia; second trimester BMI and TG/HDL-C were risk factors for macrosomia; age and Lp(a) were uterine atony postpartum hemorrhage risk factors, while APO-AI was a protective factor of uterine inertia and postpartum hemorrhage; second trimester BMI, TCH, Lp(a), and TG/HDL-C were risk factors for fetal distress, while parity was a protective factor against fetal distress. CONCLUSION Abnormal blood lipid levels in pregnancy are significantly associated with GDM, pre-eclampsia, and other adverse pregnancy outcomes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Obesity and a high-fat diet have been found to be associated with an increased risk of age-related cataract (ARC). Thus, this study aimed to investigate whether serum lipid levels are associated with the incidence of ARC. DESIGN Cross-sectional, case-control study. SETTING EyeandENT Hospital of Fudan University, Shanghai, China. PARTICIPANTS A total of 219 ARC (male=94, female=125) subjects and 218 (male=110, female=118) normal control subjects were recruited in this study. OUTCOME MEASURES A detailed eye and systematic examination was performed. Serum high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), triglyceride (TG) and cholesterol (CHO) levels were measured by enzymatic colorimetry, and serum apolipoprotein A (APOA) and apoB (APOB) levels were measured by immunoturbidimetry. The subgroups were classified according to gender and types of disease (cortical, nuclear and posterior subcapsular cataract). Logistic regression analyses were performed to identify the association between serum lipid levels and ARC. RESULTS The serum LDL-C, TG, CHO and APOA levels were significantly higher (p<0.05) in the ARC group than in the control group. A similar result was observed when the serum lipid concentrations were compared between the ARC and control groups both in male and female subgroups. A higher proportion of individuals in the ARC group had higher LDL-C, TG, CHO and APOA levels (fold=3.45, 17.37, 3.27 and11.91, respectively; p<0.0001 in all cases) than in the control group. Results of the logistic regression analyses revealed that high LDL-C (ORs=1.897, 95% CI 0.960 to 3.678) and TG (OR=1.854, 95% CI 1.232 to 2.791) were the independent risk factors for ARC. CONCLUSION The serum LDL-C and TG levels were demonstrated to be independent risk factors for ARC.

Abstract
This study investigated the hypolipidemic effect of whole grain Qingke (WGQ) and its influence on intestinal microbiota. Changes in the serum lipid, intestinal environment, and microbiota of Sprague-Dawley rats fed high-fat diets supplemented with different doses of WGQ were determined. Results showed that high doses of WGQ significantly decreased (P < 0.05) the Lee's index, serum total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels whereas they increased the body weight of the rats. Cecal weight and short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) concentration increased with increasing WGQ dose. An Illumina-based sequencing approach showed that the relative abundance of putative SCFA-producing bacteria Prevotella and Anaerovibrio increased in the rats fed the WGQ diet. Principal component analysis revealed a significant difference in intestinal microbiota composition after the administration of the WGQ diet. These findings provide insights into the contribution of the intestinal microbiota to the hypolipidemic effect of WGQ.

Abstract
To analyze the alteration of lipid profile and inflammatory markers in the serum of patients with gouty arthritis (GA), the levels of serum lipid profile, C-reactive protein (CRP), and erythrocyte sedimentation rates (ESRs) were measured in the serum of 69 gout patients, 35 patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), 23 patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS)/spondyloarthropathy (SpA), and 25 patients with osteoarthritis (OA). The serum levels of apoprotein A1 (Apo-A1) were significantly decreased in patients with gout when compared with RA, AS/SpA, and OA patients. The serum levels of CRP were significantly increased in gouty patients when compared with RA, AS/SpA, and OA patients. Furthermore, the serum levels of ESR were significantly increased in patients with gout compared to patients with OA. Correlation analysis indicated that the levels of Apo-A1 were negatively correlated with serum ESR and CRP (r = -0.475, P < .001; r = -0.380, P = .001, respectively) in the patients with GA. Taken together, this study gives us a better understanding of the relationships between serum lipid profile and inflammatory markers in gout patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the dynamic changes of serum reproductive hormone levels in old and middleaged males in health examination and their correlation with age and lipid profile. METHODS This study included 4 333 men in health examination from January 2011 to December 2014. The men were aged from 40 to 85 years old and divided into seven fiveyearspan age groups. We determined the levels of serum testosterone (T), luteinizing hormone (LH), folliclestimulating hormone (FSH), estradiol (E2), progesterone (P), prolactin (PRL), total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), lowdensity lipoprotein cholesterol (LDLC), highdensity lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLC), and the testosterone secretion index (TSI = T/LH). We analyzed the obtained data using SPSS Pram, KruskalWallis H test, MannWhitney U test, exponential regression, and Spearman correlation analysis. RESULTS Statistically significant differences were found in LH, FSH, E2 and TSI among the seven age groups (P< 0.05). The levels of serum LH, FSH and E2 were significantly higher (P< 0.05) while TSI remarkably lower (P< 0.05) in the ≥70 yr group than in the other six groups. The serum T and E2 levels and TSI were markedly lower in the 40-44, 45-49 and 50-54 yr groups in 2014 than in the other three years (P< 0.05), and so were the levels of serum T and TSI in the 55-59 yr group (P< 0.05). The levels of serum LH, FSH and E2 were correlated positively while those of P, PRL and TSI negatively with age. The serum T level was correlated positively with HDLC but negatively with TC, TG and LDLC. The levels of serum LH, FSH and E2 showed a yearly average increase of 1.9%, 2.7% and 0.5%, respectively, while TSI an annual mean decline of 2.0% in the 40-85 yr group. CONCLUSIONS LH, FSH and E2 were increased while TSI decreased with age in the >40 years old males. T and TSI were reduced in the 40-59 years old men from 2011 to 2014, and so was E2 in the 40-54 yr group. Lowlevel testosterone is closely related to dyslipidemia.

Abstract
Apolipoprotein E (ApoE), which has been shown to influence serum lipid parameters, can bind to multiple types of lipids and plays an important role in the metabolism and homeostasis of lipids and lipoproteins. A previous study showed that ApoE concentration significantly affects serum lipid levels independently of ApoE polymorphism. The serum lipid levels were also closely correlated with dietary habits, and Shandong cuisine is famous for its high salt and oil contents, which widely differ among the different areas in China. Therefore, studying the effect of ApoE polymorphism on ApoE concentration and serum lipid levels in Shandong province is very important.A total of 815 subjects including 285 men and 530 women were randomly selected and studied from Jinan, Shandong province. In order to evaluate the association of ApoE polymorphism and serum level on lipid profiles, the ApoE genotypes, as well as levels of fasting serum ApoE and other lipid parameters, were detected in all subjects.The frequency of the ApoE E3 allele was highest (83.1%), while those of E2 and E4 were 9.4% and 7.5%, respectively, which are similar to those in other Asian populations. ApoE2 allele carriers showed significantly increased ApoE levels but lower levels of serum total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and Apolipoprotein B (ApoB).We found that ApoE level is influenced by ApoE polymorphism in a gene-dependent manner. The ApoE polymorphism showed different influences on serum lipid parameters with increasing age and body mass index (BMI) in our Shandong Han population.

Abstract
Sub-clinical hypothyroidism is a common disease and whether L-thyroxine replacement treatment improves serum lipid levels in affected patients remains controversial. Thus, the aim of the present meta-analysis was to assess the effect of L-thyroxine therapy on serum lipid levels in sub-clinical hyperthyroidism. Relevant randomized controlled trials (RCTs) containing continuous data, published until July 2015 were retrieved from the Cochrane Library, PubMed, Medline, Google Scholar and Embase databases and subjected to meta-analysis using Review Manager software version 5.2 (The Nordic Cochrane Centre, Copenhagen, Denmark). Seven RCTs comprising 319 patients were included. The overall methodological quality of the RCTs was good. Statistical analysis revealed that serum low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) levels were significantly decreased after L-thyroxine treatment [mean difference (MD): -0.23; 95% confidence interval: -0.44, -0.03; P=0.02], while changes of total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG) and high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) were not significant (MD: -0.18, P=0.09; MD: -0.02, P=0.78; and MD: -0.06, P=0.14, respectively). In conclusion, the meta-analysis performed in the present study revealed that compared with placebo treatment, L-thyroxine significantly improved serum LDL-C levels in patients with sub-clinical hypothyroidism, while not significantly affecting TC, TG and HDL-C levels.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Several serum lipid components have been implicated in the development of cancer. However, the prognostic significance of serum lipid components in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma is unknown. Here, we investigated the predictive value of serum lipid profile at diagnosis and in the overall survival of the patients. METHODS The study population consists of 136 pathologically confirmed head and neck squamous cell carcinoma cases diagnosed between years 2009 and 2014 at a tertiary medical center. Levels of preoperative serum lipid component's total cholesterol, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein, low-density lipoprotein, apolipoprotein A, apolipoprotein B, and lipoprotein (a) were compared between patients and normal controls matched for age and gender. Serum lipid profiles and their association with clinical parameters were analyzed. The effects of the serum lipid components on survival were examined using the proportional hazards regression model to estimate hazard ratio. RESULTS Significant lower levels of cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein, apolipoprotein A, and apolipoprotein B were found in patients with oral cancer (P < 0.0001). However, a significantly higher level of lipoprotein (a) was found in the cancer group (P < 0.0001). Patients with higher lipoprotein (a) had significantly shorter overall survival than those with lower lipoprotein (a) (P = 0.0042). Multivariate analysis showed that both higher lipoprotein (a) and lymph node metastasis are independent prognostic factors in the patient population (P < 0.01). CONCLUSION A higher lipoprotein (a) was associated with poorer prognosis and might be a novel marker in patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The association between the fasting levels of serum lipids and Parkinson's disease (PD) in Chinese populations remains largely unknown. METHODS This study enrolled 555 sporadic PD patients and 555 age-, gender- and body mass index (BMI)-matched controls. The fasting serum lipid concentrations of all subjects, including total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein (HDL-C) and triglycerides (TG), were measured. RESULTS Total cholesterol, LDL-C, HDL-C and TG were significantly lower in PD patients than in controls. The prevalence of PD is significantly lower in subjects with the second, third and fourth quartiles of total cholesterol than in those with the first quartile of total cholesterol, regardless of gender. The prevalence of PD is significantly lower in subjects with the third and fourth quartiles of LDL-C than in those with the first quartile of LDL-C, regardless of gender. Negative correlations were found between UPDRS part III score and level of total cholesterol/LDL-C. CONCLUSIONS PD patients are with lower levels of total cholesterol, LDL-C, HDL-C and TG than controls. Lipids may be a marker of PD severity.

Abstract
We assessed the relationship between alcohol consumption and serum lipids in a middle-aged Chinese population. The overall prevalence of drinking among 10 154 participants was 34.07% in males and 3.61% in females. Heavy alcohol drinkers (≥ 30 g/d) tended to be older, smokers, hypertensive, do heavy physical activity, and have a lower body mass index. Levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), apolipoprotein (apo) A1, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol-HDL-C ratio, and apo B-apo A1 ratio rose with increase in alcohol intake in males. An increase of 0.27 mmol/L in triglycerides and a decrease of 2.10 mg/dL in lipoprotein(a), Lp(a), were observed in male alcohol drinkers who consumed ≥30 g alcohol/d compared with abstainers after controlling for all confounders. Levels of total cholesterol, HDL-C, and apo A1 increased with increase in alcohol intake in both genders and Lp(a) decreased with the increase in alcohol intake in males.

Abstract
PURPOSE To describe a reproducible method of quantifying macular hard exudates (HEs) in diabetic maculopathy and determine the associations of HEs with systemic risk factors. METHODS Patients with diabetes were recruited from a tertiary eye hospital in Melbourne, Australia. Total macular area covered by HEs (total HE area) and the distance from the foveal center to the nearest HE were measured in a semi-automated manner. Associations between HE parameters and diabetic complication risk factors were examined using multiple linear regression models. RESULTS Of 593 participants (mean age 60.5-years old), 97 (16.4%) had HEs in at least one eye, due to diabetic maculopathy. The intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) for inter- and intra-observer agreements were 0.982 and 0.999, respectively. Total HE area was positively associated with qualitative HE severity scale determined by photographic graders. The median of total HE area was 0.089 mm(2) (interquartile range, 0.027-0.246). The median distance between foveal center and the nearest HE was 791.1 μm (431.9-1385.4). After adjusting for age, sex, duration of diabetes, glycated hemoglobin, mean arterial pressure, diabetic retinopathy level, and use of lipid-lowering medication, low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol (P = 0.009), and triglyceride levels (P = 0.036) were positively associated with total HE area. Higher triglyceride levels were associated with central involvement (P = 0.023). CONCLUSIONS Quantitative measurement of HEs in patients with diabetes is associated with lipid levels, and higher triglyceride levels are associated with a higher risk of central involvement. Quantitative information may be useful to monitor HE progression or treatment response in persons with diabetic maculopathy.

Abstract
Yerba Mate tea (Mate) is believed to be a natural source of cardioprotective lipid-lowering and antioxidant compounds. In this study, the antihyperlipidemic and antioxidant effects of Mate tea in a rat hyperlipidemia model were investigated. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided randomly into five groups and fed varying diets: standard diet, hyperlipidemic diet, and hyperlipidemic diet supplemented with low, moderate, or high concentrations of Mate tea aqueous extract (1%, 2%, and 4% w/v, respectively). Compared to the hyperlipidemic control group, Mate tea reduced significantly the total body weight and lowered serum levels of total cholesterol, triglyceride, and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, and caused the elevation of serum levels of high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol. Moreover, activities of superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase in serum were elevated significantly, whereas the levels of malondialdehyde decreased. In addition, Mate tea treatment ameliorated significantly the severe fatty degeneration of liver cells that occurred in the hyperlipidemic groups. The relative levels of sterol regulatory element binding protein 1 and its target fatty acid synthase, as well as acetyl-CoA carboxylase mRNA transcripts were reduced, whereas peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha mRNA transcripts were elevated in the Mate tea groups. Our results suggest that Mate tea exerts strong antioxidant and lipid-lowering effects, prevents hepatic fatty deposition, and regulates the expression of lipid metabolic regulators. It can therefore be used to reduce the risk of atherosclerosis.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to investigate the hypocholesterolemic effect and potential of tyramine derivatives from Lycii Cortex Radicis (LCR), the root bark of lycium (Lycium chenese Miller) in reducing lipid peroxidation. The activities of enzymes, hepatic 3-hydroxy 3-methylglutaryl (HMG) CoA reductase and acyl-CoA:cholesterol acyltransferase (ACAT) and LDL oxidation were measured in vitro and animal experiments were also performed by feeding LCR extracts to rats. The test compounds employed for in vitro study were trans-N-p-coumaroyltyramine (CT) and trans-N-feruloyltyramine (FT), LCR components, N-(p-coumaroyl)serotonin (CS) and N-feruloylserotonin (FS) from safflower seeds, ferulic acid (FA) and 10-gingerol. It was observed that FT and FS at the concentration of 1.2 mg/mL inhibited liver microsomal HMG CoA reductase activity by ~40%, but no inhibition of activity was seen in the cases of CT, CS, FA and 10-gingerol. Whereas, ACAT activity was inhibited ~50% by FT and CT, 34-43% by FS and CS and ~80% by 10-gingerol at the concentration of 1 mg/mL. A significant delay in LDL oxidation was induced by CT, FT, and 10-gingerol. For the animal experiment, five groups of Sprague-Dawley male rats were fed high fat diets containing no test material (HF-control), 1 and 2% of LCR ethanol extract (LCR1 and LCR2), and 1% of extracts from safflower seed (Saf) and ginger (Gin). The results indicated that total cholesterol level was significantly lower in Saf, LCR2 and Gin groups, and HDL cholesterol level was lower only in Gin group when compared with HF-control group; while there was no difference in the serum triglyceride levels among the five experimental groups. The level of liver cholesterol was significantly lower in LCR1 and LCR2 groups than HF-control. Serum levels of TBARS were significantly lower only in LCR2 group when compared with HF-control group. From the observed results, we concluded that LCR can be utilized as a hypocholesterolemic ingredient in combination with ginger, especially for functional foods.

Westernization of lifestyles among Japanese, in particular among young generations, is a matter of concern for future increase in coronary heart disease. We surveyed a total of 349 male university students to examine changes in lifestyles and coronary risk factors in campus life. We compared dietary habits and serum fatty acid compositions as well as other coronary risk characteristics between freshmen (n=171) and fourth-year (senior) students (n=178). Serum fatty acid compositions and dietary intakes of selected foods as well as serum lipids, blood pressures and physical characteristics were examined at the 1996 and 1997 annual health examinations.Compared to freshmen, senior students had a lower frequency of fish, vegetable, milk and egg intake, and a higher frequency of oil and fat intake. The proportions of serum saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids were significantly higher among senior students than among freshmen, whereas the proportion of serum polyunsaturated fatty acids was significantly lower among senior students than among freshmen. Senior students also had higher systolic and diastolic blood pressures, percent body fat, smoking rate and alcohol usage than freshmen. Mean body weight and mean body mass index were not different between the two groups.Senior students generally showed Westernized dietary habits and higher coronary risk profiles than freshmen as indicated by the change of serum fatty acid compositions. Modification of these dietary habits and lifestyles may be important for the prevention of future CHD among Japanese young adults.
