Abstract
Selenium (Se) is physiologically essential for thyroid function. However, epidemiological studies on the association between Se status and thyroid function are limited and the results are inconsistent. Therefore, we explored this association in an elderly Chinese population sample. Participants in the cross-sectional study were people aged 65 years or older who provided fingernail and whole blood samples. Hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism were defined by serum thyroid hormones concentrations, including thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), total triiodothyronine (TT3), total thyroxine (TT4), free thyroxine (FT3), and free thyrotropin (FT4). Significant positive association was observed between whole blood and fingernail Se concentrations (r = 0.672, P < 0.001). Compared with the lowest Se quartile (Q1), the other fingernail Se quartile groups had lower TSH, higher FT3 and FT4 levels, and Q2 had higher TT3 levels after adjusting for covariates; the other whole blood Se quartile groups had lower TSH levels, Q2 had higher FT3, FT4 and TT3 levels, Q3 had higher FT3 levels, and Q4 had higher FT4 levels after adjusting for covariates. Compared with Q1, the adjusted odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CIs) of hypothyroidism for Q4 of whole blood Se was 0.141 (0.029,0.675), and the adjusted OR (95%CIs) of hyperthyroidism for Q2 and Q3 of fingernail Se were 4.121 (1.233,13.733) and 3.614 (1.095,11.926). Higher Se levels were significantly associated with lower TSH levels and higher levels of TT3, FT3 and FT4. Meanwhile, higher Se levels were associated with lower risk of hypothyroidism and higher risk of hyperthyroidism.

Abstract
This is the first successful report on selenium bio-attenuation to satisfy drinking water regulations as per Indian Standards (10 μg/L) in the presence of concomitant nitrate and sulfate from water sources utilizing a fixed bed bioreactor. The bioreactor was immunized with blended microbial culture and worked in downflow mode under anoxic conditions at 30 ± 2 °C for around 190 days under varying influent selenate (100-500 μg/L as selenium), nitrate (50 mg/L), sulfate concentrations (as per selenium removal) and necessary dose of acetic acid (as COD, a carbon source) in synthetic groundwater, operated at an empty bed contact time (EBCT) of 45-120 min. After supplying an adequate dosage of sulfate and alteration of EBCT, selenium was found to comply with drinking water regulations and nitrate was completely removed. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy analyses depicted nanocrystalline selenium sulfides (SeS and SeS2) formation as the possible mechanisms of selenium removal. Extended toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) extractions confirmed a maximum selenium leaching of 52 and 282 μg/L during anoxic and oxic extractions, respectively. Long-term column leaching (>3-month equilibration) under aerobic conditions at pH 7 confirmed the produced precipitate to be essentially stable (∼0.14% Se leaching). This work exhibits the synchronous bioremoval of selenium and its co-anions from contaminated water complying with drinking water standards, and leaving a stable and non-hazardous selenium-laden biosludge.

Abstract
Selenium is an essential trace element in humans and animals and its role in selenoprotein and enzyme antioxidant activity is well documented. Food is the principal source of selenium, and it is important that selenium status in the body is adequately maintained for physiological functions. There has been increasing attention on the role of selenium in mitigating the toxic effects of mercury exposure from dietary intake in humans. In contrast, mercury is a neurotoxin, and its continuous exposure can cause adverse health effects in humans. The interactions of selenium and mercury are multi-factorial and involve complex binding mechanisms between these elements at a molecular level. Further insights and understanding in this area may help to evaluate the health implications of dietary mercury exposure and selenium status. This review aims to summarise current information on the interplay of the interactions between selenium and mercury in the body and the protective effect of selenium on at-risk groups in a population who may experience long-term mercury exposure.

Abstract
Occupational and environmental exposure to Lead (Pb) has profound detrimental effects on human health. The underlying mechanism of lead toxicity is not fully understood but antioxidant imbalance is suggested to be a key player in its pathogenesis. Selenium (Se) being a vital component of antioxidant system in the body, has been linked to many health benefits in humans. Selenium levels in occupationally Pb exposed individuals has not been explored in Indian setup. The aim of the present study is to find out the association of Se with blood lead levels (BLL) in occupationally Pb exposed individuals. In the present study 91 occupationally Pb exposed workers employed in handicraft and paint industries were recruited after taking informed consent. The demographic details were noted on self-generated questionnaire. The BLL and Se were measured using GFAAS (Thermofisher Scientific, Waltham, USA). Samples were run in duplicate after ensuring quality control. The mean Pb and Se levels in the study population were 5.5 ± 5.6 µg/dl (0.42-31.76 µg/dl) and 105.5 ± 23.8 µg/dl (46.4-189.6 µg/dl) respectively. BLL was significantly higher in tobacco chewers and those occupationally exposed to Pb for more than 5 years. Significantly low Se levels were observed in individuals with high BLL. Statistically significant negative linear relationship was noted between BLL and Se. The negative correlation of Se with BLL indicates the antagonistic relationship between these metals.

Abstract
The acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic has affected millions of individuals, causing major health and economic disruptions worldwide. The pandemic is still raging, with a second and third wave in a few countries, while new infections steadily rise in India. Nutrition and immune status are two critical aspects of fighting the virus successfully. Recently, selenium status was reported to positively correlate with the survival of patients with COVID-19 compared with non-survivors. We analyzed the blood serum levels in 30 apparently healthy individuals and in 30 patients with confirmed COVID-19 infection in the southern part of India. The patients showed significantly lower selenium levels of 69.2 ± 8.7 ng/mL than controls 79.1 ± 10.9 ng/mL. The difference was statistically significant (P = 0.0003). Interestingly, the control group showed a borderline level of selenium, suggesting that the level of this micronutrient is not optimum in the population studied. The results of this exploratory study pave the way for further research in a larger population and suggest that selenium supplementation may be helpful in reducing the effects of the virus.

Abstract
The present study showed for the first time that selenium, iron, and nitrate could be simultaneously removed in a sulfidogenic bioreactor to meet drinking water standards. A bioreactor inoculated with mixed bacterial consortium was operated for around 330 days in anoxic environment at 30 °C under varying combination of influent selenate (200-1000 μg/L as selenium), and iron (3-10 mg/L) in presence of 50 mg/L of nitrate. Required amount of acetic acid (as carbon source) and sulfate were supplied and the reactor was operated at different empty bed contact time (EBCT) of 45-120 min. Along with complete removal of nitrate, the reactor removed both selenium and iron to meet the drinking water standards. Field emission transmission electron microscopy (FETEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses confirmed the formation of selenium sulfide (SeS), achavalite (FeSe) and pyrite (FeS2), which were the possible removal mechanisms of selenium and iron. Thus, this study exhibited that selenium, iron, and nitrate can be simultaneously removed to meet the drinking water standards in a sulfidogenic bioreactor.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Selenium is a very important micronutrient. Food is the major source for selenium uptake and the average blood levels is seen to be highly affected by dietary habits as selenium levels in food naturally depend on the kind of soil they are grown upon and in processed foods its levels depend on fortification. Deficiency of this vital nutriment needs to be assessed to understand deficiency prevalence. DESIGN AND METHODS A total number of 529,461 subjects were tested for their blood selenium levels. The study cohort consisted of 284,189 males and 245,272 females respectively. Average blood selenium levels have been analyzed across both the genders using the analytical platform of Inductively Coupled Plasma - Mass Spectrometry. RESULTS For borderline low analysis of selenium, values of </= 105 μg/L were considered. The total frequency of borderline low recorded in our study was 3.7%. The average blood selenium levels and further geographical highlights have been included and discussed. CONCLUSION Our report is an effort to create awareness about the less discussed micronutrient necessity to be tested in the Indian scenario.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Several studies have shown an inverse relationship between selenium status and cardiovascular health, although epidemiologic evidence yielded by the randomized trials did not find a beneficial effect of selenium administration. The aim of this study was to analyze the association between serum selenium levels and lipid profile adjusted by age, sex and other associated factors among a general adult population in Spain. MATERIALS AND METHODS We recruited 372 hospital employee volunteers (60 men and 312 women) with a mean age of 47 (SD: 10.9), whom were given a standardized questionnaire. Serum selenium concentration was measured by electrothermal atomization atomic absorption spectrometry. Serum copper and zinc concentrations were measured using flame atomic absorption spectrometry. RESULTS The mean of serum selenium was 79.5μg/L (SD: 11.7) with no sex-dependent differences. In the multivariate linear regression analysis, the associated factors with the mean levels of selenium were: age (β=0.223; CI 95%: 0.101-0.345), p<0.001; widowhood (β=-9.668; CI 95%: -17.234 to -2.102), p=0.012; calcium supplements (β=3.949; CI 95%: 0.059-7.838), p=0.047; zinc (β=0.126; CI 95%: 0.013-0.238), p=0.028 and glucose (β=0.172; CI 95%: 0.062- 0.281), p=0.002; Participants with serum selenium≥79.5μg/L were 1.98 (OR=1.98; CI 95% 1.17-3.35; p=0.011) and 2.04 times (OR=2.04; CI 95% 1.06-3.97; p=0.034) more likely to have cholesterol ≥200mg/dL and LDL-c ≥100mg/dL respectively than those with serum selenium <79.5μg/L. CONCLUSIONS Higher selenium was positively associated with increased total and LDL cholesterol but not with HDL-c and triglycerides. More studies are needed in order to confirm the lower serum selenium findings in widows.

Abstract
Biomonitoring is increasingly used to assess exposure to selenium (Se) in the population. However, there is little harmonization among protocols used in the different studies (varying biological matrices, differences in expression of results (concentrations versus amounts, units)). This makes inter-comparison of biomonitoring results across studies difficult. From a public health risk perspective, it also becomes challenging to estimate baseline levels in biological matrices for populations exposed by various sources. The aim of this study was thus to perform a systematic analysis of the relationship between Se intakes and biological concentrations based on published data. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were used and led to select 75 published biomonitoring data in humans from an extended review of Se biomonitoring studies. This represents 8 628 individuals who provided biological samples aiming at documenting Se exposure and/or Se concentrations in two or more biological matrices. Mathematical algorithms that relate Se intakes to biological concentrations and establish matrix-to-matrix associations were derived from these pooled biomonitoring data. Logarithmic regressions showed good correlations between Se intakes and whole blood concentrations (R(2)=0.884), plasma concentrations (R(2)=0.863) and urinary excretion rates (R(2)=0.958). Blood and plasma concentrations were also strongly related (R(2)=0.874), as were whole blood concentrations and urinary excretion rates (R(2)=0.953). The interpretation of the log-regression coefficients allowed illustrating Se physiology. Se concentrations in plasma tend to plateau when daily intake exceed 150 μg/d, whereas Se in urine increases rapidly above this threshold. The application of the algorithms to other independent data sets in order to reconstruct past Se intakes confirmed that interpretation of results on the basis of Se in integuments may be misleading if external contamination is not avoided. This approach based on pooled data covered a wide range of exposure and the large number of data integrated increased the level of confidence of results.

Abstract
A study of iron, zinc, copper and selenium concentration levels was carried out in three compartments namely, maternal serum (MS), colostrums and cord blood serum (CS) of healthy Indian mothers (n = 42) who delivered healthy normal neonates without any congenital anomalies at Bhabha Atomic Research Centre hospital, Mumbai. Fe, Zn, Cu in maternal serum, cord blood and colostrums were estimated by flame atomic absorption spectrometry while Se was determined by graphite furnace absorption spectrometry. It was seen that there was a significant difference in the level of trace elements in the three compartments. The average levels of Fe in the three compartments were 1,132 ± 519, 2,312 ± 789 and 1,183 ± 602 μg/L while Zn was 514 ± 149, 819 ± 224 and 7,148 ± 2,316 μg/L respectively. Mean Cu values were 1,614 ± 295, 301 ± 77 and 392 ± 174 μg/L respectively while Se values were 70 ± 15, 36 ± 10 and 23 ± 8 μg/L respectively. The results indicated a positive correlation of Fe and Zn concentrations in MS versus CS which were (r = 0.386), (r = 0.572) respectively and Fe levels in MS and colostrums (r = 0.235). A few inter element correlations were found within compartments. Zn and Se showed a negative correlation in both MS (r = -0.489) and colostrums (r = -0.258) while a positive inter correlation of Fe and Zn was seen in MS (r = 0.44) and in CS (r = 0.54). This study gave us an overview of the serum and colostrum values of mother and neonates in Indian population, data of which are scarce.

Abstract
Concentrations of selenium (Se) in food from local markets of Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) were measured and daily intake calculated based on information from a questionnaire of foods eaten by healthy Saudis. The daily intake of Se was then compared to concentrations of Se in blood serum. Primary sources of Se in the diet of Saudis were as follows: meat and meat products (31%), egg (20.4%), cereals and cereal products (16%), legumes (8.7%), fruits (6.8%), milk and dairy products (2.0%), beverages (2%), sweets (1.8%), pickles (0.2%), and oil (0.02%). Daily intake of Se, estimated to be 93 μg Se/person/day, was slightly greater than that calculated from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) food balance sheet for KSA, which was approximately 90 μg Se/person/day. The daily intake of Se by Saudis in Riyadh was greater than that of Australians or Dutch but less that of Canadians and Americans. There was a statistically significant correlation (R = +0.38, P < 0.05) between daily intake of Se and concentrations of Se in blood serum of Saudis in Riyadh. The mean concentration of Se in serum was 1.0 × 10(2) ± 30.5 μg Se/l. Taken together, the results suggest that the average Se intake and Se serum concentrations are within the known limits and recommendations, making it unlikely that Saudis are on average at risk of deficiency or toxicity.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to assess whole blood selenium levels of 300 healthy adults living in four selected areas of the west of Algeria. Selenium was measured using differential pulse cathodic stripping voltammetry with a detection limit of 29.20 μg/L. The mean of whole blood selenium concentrations was 85.65 ± 21.60 μg/L ranging between 30.90 and 144.04 μg/L. This concentration did not vary significantly (P > 0.05) in relation to the gender of the subject, with concentrations of 87.75 ± 21.30 μg/L in men and 83.95 ± 21.60 μg/L in women group. Individuals older than 60 years had a whole blood selenium concentration significantly lower than the rest of the population. However, the measured selenium concentrations in the residential areas were not statistically different (P > 0.05). A total of 32 (10.70%) individuals exhibited whole blood selenium level below 60 μg/L. These results are similar to those of some European countries but are much lower than data observed in USA or seleniferous regions.

Abstract
Selenium concentrations in the blood of 112 (56 females and 56 males) normal subjects, from different regions of the Punjab (Pakistan), have been determined using the technique of inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. The whole blood selenium concentrations were found to be 452 ± 12 ppb (parts per billion or nano-gram of Se per gram freeze-dried blood or 96 ± 3 μg/L ), with 470 ± 16 ppb (or 100 ± 4 μg/L) in female and 435 ± 16 ppb (or 92 ± 4 μg/L) in male population. Compared with other populations of the world [corrected] these levels are similar with the exception of the low-selenium-region of China. [corrected].

Abstract
The reference ranges for blood Cu, Mn, Se and Zn of 215 adult subjects non-occupationally exposed and living in the Nuoro province (Sardinia, insular Italy) were assessed. Metals were determined by sector field inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry after microwave-assisted acid digestion of blood. The blood reference ranges estimated as P5-P95 percentiles (geometric mean, GM) were 776-1495μg/L (1036μg/L) for Cu; 4.73-17.0μg/L (8.91μg/L) for Mn; 106-185μg/L (140μg/L) for Se and 4686-8585μg/L (6418μg/L) for Zn. These results were then stratified for sex, age, alcohol consumption, smoking habit and living area. The GM value of Cu was significantly higher in females (1127μg/L) than in males (957μg/L). Age, alcohol intake, smoking habit and residential area did not influence blood Cu. The GM of Mn was significantly higher in females (9.98μg/L) respect to males (8.01μg/L) and in drinkers (9.67μg/L) compared to non-drinkers (8.38μg/L). The other variables did not change the Mn data. Selenium concentrations did not differ significantly as a function of individuals factors. With reference to Zn, males had GM of 6804μg/L and females of 6031μg/L, and more blood Zn was found in subjects consuming alcohol (6618μg/L) respect to abstainers (6155μg/L). In addition, blood Zn was not affected by age, smoking habit and place of living.

Abstract
This paper deals with epidemiological multivariate statistical analysis of cancer and health patients from Pomeranian and Lubuskie Voivodships, Poland. The anthropometric and epidemiologic data include 8 parameters: toenail selenium concentration, sex, age, body mass index (BMI), smoking status, taking of Se supplements, health state, and family history of cancer. The self-organizing maps (SOM) are used for simultaneous classification of parameters and patients with relation to cancer diagnosis. Three different patterns (groups) of patients with cancer diagnosis are outlined: (i) older, smoking men with low toenail selenium concentration; (ii) older smoking women with family relation to cancer and toenail selenium deficiency; (iii) middle, aged nonsmokers with high level of selenium toenail concentration. The simultaneous classification of parameters and patients makes it possible to determine discriminating parameters for each pattern and relations between parameters. The relation of each parameter to cancer disease is discussed as special attention is paid to toenail selenium deficiency. More than 80% of patients with cancer diagnosis possess toenail selenium deficiency, accompanied by old age and smoking.

Abstract
Selenium levels in soil generally reflect its presence in food and the Se levels in human populations. Se food content is influenced by geographical location, seasonal changes, protein content and food processing. Periodic monitoring of Se levels in soil and food is necessary. Diet is the major Se source and approximately 80% of dietary Se is absorbed depending on the type of food consumed. Se bioavailability varies according to the Se source and nutritional status of the subject, being significantly higher for organic forms of Se. Se supplements can be beneficial for subjects living in regions with very low environmental levels of Se. Several strategies have been followed: (1) employment of Se-enriched fertilizers; (2) supplementation of farm animals with Se; (3) consumption of multimicronutrient supplements with Se. Nevertheless, detailed investigations of possible interactions between Se supplements and other food components and their influence on Se bioavailability are needed. Suppliers also need to provide more information on the specific type of Se used in supplements. In addition, research is lacking on the mechanisms through which Se is involved in hepatocyte damage during hepatopathies. Although Se potential as an antioxidant for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) is promising, additional long-term intervention trials are necessary. As a result, indiscriminate Se supplements cannot be reliably recommended for the prevention of CVD in human beings. Some interesting findings reported an association of Se intake with a reduced prevalence and risk for prostate and colon cancer. However, random trials for other cancer types are inconclusive. As a final conclusion, the general population should be warned against the employment of Se supplements for prevention of hepatopathies, cardiovascular or cancer diseases, because benefits of Se supplementation are still uncertain, and their indiscriminate use could generate an increased risk of Se toxicity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The etiology of Balkan Endemic Nephropathy, (BEN), a tubulointerstitial kidney disease, is unknown. Although this disease is endemic in rural areas of Bosnia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Romania, and Serbia, similar manifestations are reported to occur in other regions, for instance Tunisia and Sri Lanka. A number of explanations have been stated including lignites, aristolochic acid, ochratoxin A, metals, and metalloids. Etiologic claims are often based on one or a few studies without sound scientific evidence. In this systematic study, we tested whether exposures to metals (cadmium and lead) and metalloids (arsenic and selenium) are related to Balkan Endemic Nephropathy. METHODS In 2003/04 we recruited 102 adults whose parents had BEN and who resided in one of three communities (Vratza, Bistretz, or Beli Izvor, Bulgaria). A control group comprised of 99 adults having non-BEN hospitalized parents was enrolled in the study during the same time. We conducted face-to-face interviews, ultrasound kidney measurements, and determined kidney function in two consecutive investigations (2003/04 and 2004/05). Metals and metalloids were measured in urine and blood samples. To assess the agreement between these consecutive measurements, we calculated intraclass correlation coefficients. Repeated measurement data were analyzed using mixed models. RESULTS We found that cadmium and arsenic were associated with neither kidney size nor function. Lead had a significant but negligible effect on creatinine clearance. Selenium showed a weak but significant negative association with two of the four kidney parameters, namely creatinine clearance and beta2-microglobulin. It was positively related to kidney length. These associations were not restricted to the offspring of BEN patients. Adding credence to these findings are reports showing comparable kidney effects in animals exposed to selenium. CONCLUSION The findings of this 2-year follow-up study indicate that metals and metalloids do not play a role in the etiology of Balkan Endemic Nephropathy. Against the assumption in the literature, selenium was not protective but a risk factor. Since comparable associations were observed in animals, future studies are needed to explore whether selenium may have adverse renal effects in humans.
