Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate the correlation between household composition and consumption of different groups of high fat, sugar or sodium (HFSS) among older persons in Thailand. STUDY DESIGN This study used cross-sectional data from the 2021 population-based survey called the Health Behavior of Population Survey. METHODS Data from this study were drawn from 39,384 sampled Thai older persons age 60 years or over. A food frequency questionnaire was used to collect information about frequency of HFSS food consumption, household composition, and socio-demographic characteristics. Binary logistic regression was performed to investigate correlations between household composition and food consumption. RESULTS More than three in five older Thais lived in a multigenerational home. The probabilities of consuming high-fat food, fast food, and snacks among older persons who lived with working-age person(s) and child(ren)/adolescents were much higher than for those living alone. Older persons who lived alone had the highest probability of consuming instant food, compared with other types of household composition. Participants who lived with child(ren)/adolescents only or with working-age person(s) only (p ≤ 0.01) and child(ren)/adolescents only (p ≤ 0.001) were more likely to consume sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB). CONCLUSIONS The findings point to life course interventions to discourage HFSS consumption across generations. Social interventions and public policy aiming at increasing intergenerational interactions could be beneficial for healthier diets for not only older persons but also across generations.

Abstract
At present, a lack of consensus exists regarding the clinical impact of osteoporosis on alveolar bone metabolism during implant osseointegration. While limited preclinical and clinical evidence demonstrates a negative influence of osteoporosis on dental extraction socket healing, no preclinical studies offer data on the results of implant placement in 6-mo-old, ovariectomized (OVX) Sprague-Dawley rats. This study aimed to investigate the outcomes of dental tooth extraction socket healing and implant placement in a rodent model of osteoporosis following daily vehicle (VEH) or abaloparatide (ABL) administration. Micro-CT and histologic analysis demonstrated signs of delayed wound healing, consistent with alveolar osteitis in extraction sockets following 42 d of healing in both the VEH and ABL groups. In a semiquantitative histological analysis, the OVX-ABL group demonstrated a tendency for improved socket regeneration with a 3-fold greater rate for moderate socket healing when compared to the OVX-VEH group (43% vs 14%), however, this finding was not statistically significant (p=.11). No significant differences were observed between vehicle and test groups in terms of implant outcomes (BMD and bone volume/total volume) at 14- and 21-d post-implant placement. Abaloparatide (ABL) significantly increased BMD of the femoral shaft and intact maxillary alveolar bone sites in OVX animals, demonstrating the therapeutic potential for oral hard tissue regeneration. The present model involving estrogen-deficiency-induced bone loss demonstrated an impaired healing response to dental extraction and implant installation.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study investigated the relationship between food group and the changes in sarcopenia parameters in 1 year among older outpatients. METHODS A prospective cohort study conducted between July 2017 and April 2021 included patients aged ≥ 65 years attending a frailty clinic. Food group consumption adjusted for energy and body weight was conducted using a self-administered dietary history questionnaire. Ordinal logistic regression analysis was used to examine the association between tertiles of adjusted food group consumption and outcomes, including a handgrip strength decline, prolonged five-time chair stand test (5CST), decreased skeletal muscle mass index (SMI), and decreased gait speed in 1 year. Covariates included age, sex, height, energy intake, number of comorbidities, and the Baecke activity score. RESULTS In the analysis of 165 participants (mean age 77.6 ± 6.1 years, 107 women), individuals with higher consumption of sugar and sweeteners had a significantly increased risk for handgrip strength decline (OR 2.46, 95% CI 1.15-5.23, P = 0.020) and prolonged 5CST (OR 3.14, 95% CI 1.38-7.13, P = 0.006). Higher consumption of beverages increased the risk of handgrip strength decline (OR 2.30, 95% CI 1.11-4.76, P = 0.025). Conversely, higher legume consumption decreased the risk of SMI reduction (OR 0.35, 95%CI 0.16-0.76, P = 0.008), higher fruit consumption reduced the risk of prolonged 5CST time (OR 0.29, 95% CI 0.13-0.67, P = 0.004), and higher green yellow vegetables consumption decreased the risk of reduced gait speed (OR 0.38, 95% CI 0.17-0.84, P = 0.017). CONCLUSION Sugar, sweeteners, and beverages are associated with worsened sarcopenia parameters, whereas consumption of legumes, vegetables, and fruits is associated with a lower risk.

Abstract
Poor nutrition is a risk factor for dental decay in younger people. However, except for sugar, it is unclear if this is true in older age groups. The aim of this study was to analyze the possible associations between overall dietary intake of nutrients and diet quality and the presence of dental decay in community-dwelling older men. A cross-sectional analysis of a longitudinal study with a standardized validated diet history assessment and comprehensive oral health examination in 520 community-dwelling men (mean age: 84 years) participating in the Concord Health and Ageing in Men Project. Nutrient reference values were used to determine if individual micronutrients and macronutrients were meeting recommendations. Acceptable macronutrient distribution ranges (AMDRs) were attained for fat and carbohydrate intakes and were incorporated into a dichotomous variable to determine if the participants were consuming a high fat-low carbohydrate diet. Diagnosis of coronal caries was based on visual criteria and inspection and was completed on each of the five coronal surfaces. Root surface caries was textual changes across four root surfaces. This diagnosis was used to categorize participants by the presence and severity of coronal and root caries. The adjusted logistic regression showed not meeting the recommended intakes for thiamin (odds ratio [OR]: 2.32 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.15-4.67), and zinc (OR: 3.33, 95% CI: 1.71-6.48) were associated with presence of severe root decay. Adjusted analysis also showed that participants who were outside the recommended AMDR for fat (OR: 0.61, 95% CI: 0.38-0.98) and those who consumed a high fat and low carbohydrate diet (OR: 0.56, 95% CI: 0.35-0.91) were less likely to have coronal tooth decay. Our study shows associations between micronutrients and macronutrients and coronal and root surface decay. Although this study cannot prescribe causality or be generalized to all older adults, diet has a possible association with dental decay in older men.

Abstract
Background In this study, we attempted to generate insights into the determinants of nutritional status among older adults in India by exploring the role of factors including oral health, food insecurity, socioeconomic, demographic and health-related variables. The study also examined the moderating role of tooth loss with the association between chewing ability and nutritional status. Methods The data was obtained from Longitudinal Ageing Study India (LASI) - Wave 1 (2017-18). The sample consisted of 27,411 older adults (Male = 13, 232; Female = 14, 179) aged 60 years and above. In addition to descriptive and bivariate analysis, we employed multinominal logistic regression analysis. Result There was a significant association between the ability to chew solid food and tooth loss in the nutritional status of older adults. It was further revealed that tooth loss acted as a moderator (aRRR = 1.50, 95 % CI: 1.08-2.08) between the chewing ability and the risk of being underweight. The weight loss due to food insecurity increased the relative risk ratio of being underweight (aRRR = 1.58, 95 % CI: 1.25-2.00). Further evidence showed that self-rated health (SRH), Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL), morbidity status and socioeconomic factors had a significant role in determining the nutritional status among older adults. Conclusion Chewing ability, tooth loss, and food insecurity determine nutritional status among older adults. It is suggested to care for oral and general physical health as these factors increase the risk of nutritional deficits. Also, policy measures should be strengthened to address the specific health and food security needs of older adults from vulnerable socioeconomic circumstances.

Abstract
The underlying mechanisms of the relationship between the number of teeth and cognition is still unclear. We aimed to construct a mediation model between the number of residual teeth and cognitive function, using nutritional status as a mediating factor. This study was completed using the West China Health and Aging Trend cohort. A total of 6634 multi-ethnic older adults, aged 50 years or older, were included. This study measured cognitive function using the Short-Portable Mental Status Questionnaire, and nutritional status was assessed using the Mini Nutritional Assessment-Short Form. The mediation analysis examined the potential mediating role of nutritional status. The pathway analysis was supplemented and validated using the structural equation modelling framework. Multiple linear regression demonstrated that a higher number of residual teeth was correlated with enhanced cognitive function (β = -0.15; 95% CI: -0.19 to -0.111). The mediation model, from the number of residual teeth to cognitive impairment, was partially mediated by nutritional status (β = -0.0608; 95% CI: -0.0762 to -0.0461). The proportion of the mediating effect, expressed as a percentage, was 40.66%. Furthermore, the estimated coefficients for the number of residual teeth and nutritional status varied across ethnic groups. This study indicated that enhancing the nutrition of older adults could reduce the adverse effects of the number of residual teeth on cognitive function among older adults.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore how denture-related experiences affect older adults' quality of life using a qualitative assessment of the Oral Health Impact Profile for Edentulous individuals (OHIP-Edent). MATERIALS AND METHODS Twenty elderly individuals were interviewed before and 3 months after delivering new complete dentures, using an open-ended interview guide based on the OHIP-Edent. Interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed. Data were open coded and thematically analyzed following a Grounded Theory approach. Findings were integrated and constantly compared to understand the interviewees' difficulties, beliefs, and perceptions. RESULTS Three interconnected themes were developed: functional and psychosocial impairments, and coping strategies. Even when posed as an open-ended format, the wording of some OHIP-Edent items was confusing while others were not relevant to the respondents. New categories related to speaking, smiling, swallowing, emotional and functional coping emerged from the interviews. Interviewees adapted to chewing and swallowing difficulties through food avoidance, modification of food choice and preparation techniques, and changes in dietary behaviors. CONCLUSIONS Denture wearing is a daily challenging experience that encompasses various functional and psychosocial aspects and sheds light on the need for addressing the coping strategies employed by patients, as the current OHIP-Edent items may not fully represent other deemed important aspects of the quality of life of individuals who wear dentures. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Dentists must not solely rely on structured questionnaires to explore the impact of denture wearing and treatment outcomes. Clinicians can use a more holistic approach to comprehend older adults' experiences with dentures including advice about coping mechanisms, food preparation techniques, and meal planning.

Abstract
Purpose Chewing problems are associated with increased mortality, geriatric syndromes and poor activities of daily living. Starting in 2018, in Japan, a self-reported questionnaire investigating chewing status was implemented in the annual health checkup program. Considering the bidirectional association between hyperglycemia and poor oral health, it is hypothesized that people with self-reported chewing problems will have relatively poor glycemic profiles. We investigated the metabolic characteristics of elderly community dwellers with self-reported chewing problems, as well as the association between the problems and HbA1c levels. Patients and Methods This was a retrospective, cross-sectional study. We reviewed the data of 1018 adults ≥ 65 years of age who had undergone an annual health checkup at Nihon University Hospital during the period from January 2019 through December 2019. The presence of chewing problems was investigated using a self-reported questionnaire constructed based on guidance provided by the Japanese government. Results In the 1018 participants, the overall prevalence of chewing problems was 10.4%. Participants with chewing problems showed significantly higher levels and worse categories of HbA1c than those without such problems (HbA1c < 6.0%, 42.5% vs 54.8%; HbA1c 6.0-6.9%, 41.5% vs 37.0%; HbA1c ≥ 7.0%, 16.0% vs 8.2%, p = 0.008). Participants with HbA1c ≥ 7.0% have a significantly increased risk of chewing problems as compared to those with HbA1c < 6.0% (odds ratio 2.76, p = 0.002), even after adjusting for the effects of age, sex, body mass index, eating behaviors, and history of diabetes mellitus. Conclusion HbA1c ≥ 7.0% is associated with self-reported chewing problems in elderly Japanese community-dwellers. We thus recommend a proactive assessment of oral conditions for this population.

Abstract
Oral health is vital to general health and well-being for all ages, and as with other chronic conditions, oral health problems increase with age. There is a bi-directional link between nutrition and oral health, in that nutrition affects the health of oral tissues and saliva, and the health of the mouth may affect the foods consumed. Evidence suggests that a healthy diet generally has a positive impact on oral health in older adults. Although studies examining the direct link between oral health and protein intake in older adults are limited, some have explored the relationship via malnutrition, which is also prevalent among older adults. Protein-energy malnutrition (PEM) may be associated with poor oral health, dental caries, enamel hypoplasia, and salivary gland atrophy. This narrative review presents the theoretical evidence on the impact of dietary protein and amino acid composition on oral health, and their combined impact on overall health in older adults.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This scoping review describes the relationship between tooth retention, health, and quality of life in older adults. METHODS Seven databases were searched for English language articles for subjects ≥ 65 y from 1981 to 2021. Exposure was tooth retention (≥ 20), and outcomes were general/systemic health and quality of life. Methodological quality was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale and Cochrane Risk of Bias 2.0 tool. RESULTS 140 articles were included, only four were randomized trials. Inter-rater agreement (κ) regarding study inclusion was 0.924. Most were assessed with low risk of bias (n = 103) and of good quality (n = 96). Most studies were conducted in Japan (n = 60) and Europe (n = 51) and only nine in the US. Tooth retention was referred to as "functional dentition" in 132 studies and "shortened dental arch" in 19 studies. Study outcomes were broadly synthesized as (1) cognitive decline/functional dependence, (2) health status/chronic diseases, (3) nutrition, and (4) quality of life. DISCUSSION There is a positive relationship between tooth retention, overall health, and quality of life. Older adults retaining ≥ 20 teeth are less likely to experience poorer health. Having < 20 teeth increases the likelihood for functional dependence and onset of disability, and may affect successful ageing. This review supports the general finding that the more teeth older adults retain as they age, the less likely they are to have adverse health outcomes. However, significant knowledge gaps remain which can limit decision-making affecting successful ageing for many older adults. This review highlights the need to consider, as an important marker of oral health and function, the retention of a functional minimum of a natural dentition, rather than a simple numeric score of missing teeth.

Abstract
Background The prevalence of tooth loss varies across the globe among oldest-old individuals. The presence of fewer than 20 teeth in old age was associated with a decrease in people’s health and quality of life. This paper explored the association between socioeconomics, health-related factors, and tooth loss among the population over the age of 80 in China. Methods The tooth loss status of older Chinese adults was collected with a structured questionnaire from the 8th wave of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS). A total of 6716 individuals aged 80 years and above were included. Logistic regression was used to assess the association between socioeconomic statuses, dietary intake at approximately 60 years old, health-related factors, and tooth loss. Results Of the 6716 individuals aged 80 years and above, the composition of the group with fewer teeth for both men and women was statistically significant in many ways. Multivariate logistic regression analyses show that for men, being older than 90 years and being ADL disabled (adjusted OR: 1.71, 95% CI: 1.01–2.89) are factors that are significantly and consistently associated with a higher risk of having fewer than 20 teeth, while having a higher household income per capita (adjusted OR: 0.56, 95% CI: 0.32–0.99) decreases the risk. For women, an age of above 95 years, brushing teeth less than once per day (adjusted OR: 1.96, 95% CI: 1.26–3.03), consuming sugar some of the time as opposed to less than once per month at approximately 60 years old (adjusted OR = 1.74, 95% CI: 1.15–2.62), and being ADL disabled (adjusted OR: 1.70, 95% CI: 1.04–2.77) are factors that are significantly associated with the risk of having fewer than 20 teeth. Conclusion The analysis suggests that socioeconomic status, dietary intake in early old age, and ADL capacity are associated with the risk of having fewer teeth for the population aged 80 years and above, and the risk factors vary between sexes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study assessed the clinical performance of hydrophilic dental implants in a patient cohort with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). METHODS Subjects with T2DM of ≥ 2-years duration were allocated to either the well-controlled (WC; HbA1c ≤ 7.0%,) or poorly-controlled (PC; 7.5 < HbA1c < 10%) groups in a dual-center, prospective cohort study. Each subject received a single, titanium-zirconium (Ti-Zr) dental implant with a chemically-modified, hydrophilic (modSLA) surface in a posterior mandibular site. Postoperatively, subjects were followed at 1, 2, 4, 8 and 12-week intervals. Post-loading, subjects were followed at 3, 6 and 12-months. Clinical and radiographic parameters of implant success, and dental patient-reported outcomes were collected. RESULTS Twenty-one dental patients (NWC = 11; NPC = 10; mean age: 66.8 ± 7.5 years) were enrolled and the 1-year implant success rate was 100%. Peri-implant bone levels were stable with 0.15 ± 0.06 mm mean marginal loss at one year without significant inter-group differences (p = 0.79). Postoperative pain was minimal at 1-week, and OHIP-5 scores decreased significantly over time as compared with preoperative levels (p < 0.001) suggesting significant improvement in patient-perceived oral health following implant therapy. CONCLUSIONS Elevated HbA1c levels> 7.5% did not compromise 1-year successrates, or oral health-related quality of lifein PC patients receiving modSLA, Ti-Zr implants. Abstract
Background: Oral disabilities occur due to tooth loss. This study aimed to investigate oral and systemic factors related to diet in elderly residents receiving domiciliary dental care. Methods: The subjects were 74 consenting residents. Survey items included whether subjects could eat independently and diet type. Subjects were examined by the dentist for the number of teeth, occlusal support index, and wearing dentures. Contingency table analysis was performed to determine what levels of decline in general and oral functions led to difficulties eating a normal diet. Results: There was a significant difference in the mean number of activities of daily living (ADL) requiring assistance evident between subjects eating a normal diet and those eating fluid boiled rice (p < 0.01). A comparison of occlusal support and diet type showed that most subjects who ate a soft diet or gruel had no occlusal support. Almost all subjects who ate a normal diet wore dentures. However, only 38% of subjects eating a soft diet and 40% of those eating gruel did wear dentures; both group differences were significant (p < 0.01). Conclusions: Future studies need to further investigate oral factors related to the type of diet and their relationships to domiciliary dental care in older adults.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM A clinical assessment of the masticatory performance of edentulous people treated with bimaxillary implant-supported fixed prostheses is lacking. PURPOSE The purpose of this case-control study was to compare the masticatory performance of edentulous people treated with bimaxillary implant-supported fixed prostheses to that of those with a natural dentition by using a simplified comminution test with hard viscoelastic test food and a mixing ability test. MATERIAL AND METHODS Thirty-six participants were recruited and divided into 2 equal groups (n=18) based on their dental status. The experimental group (7 women, mean ±standard deviation age=69.8 ±7.5 years) had bimaxillary implant-supported fixed prostheses, and the control group (9 women, mean ±standard deviation age=68.3 ±5.6 years) had a natural dentition. A hard viscoelastic food comminution test and a mixing ability test with 2-colored chewing gum were performed in both groups. The number and total area of the particles during the comminution test and the variance of hue during the mixing ability test were measured. The data were analyzed with the parametric (paired t test) and nonparametric (Mann-Whitney U) tests to assess differences between the groups (α=.05). RESULTS The experimental group exhibited significantly fewer pieces in the food comminution test than the control group (P=.001). The experimental group also showed significantly higher variance of hue values than the control group (P<.001). CONCLUSIONS Patients treated with bimaxillary implant-supported prostheses had reduced masticatory performance in comparison to those with a natural dentition, despite having been provided with satisfactory and well-functioning prostheses.

Abstract
We aimed to investigate the associations of poor oral health cross-sectionally with diet quality and intake in older people. We also examined whether change in diet quality is associated with oral health problems. Data from the British Regional Heart Study (BRHS) comprising British males aged 71-92 years and the Health, Aging and Body Composition (HABC) Study comprising American males and females aged 71-80 years were used. Dental data included tooth loss, periodontal disease, dry mouth and self-rated oral health. Dietary data included diet quality (based on Elderly Dietary Index (BRHS) and Healthy Eating Score (HABC Study)) and several nutrients. In the BRHS, change in diet quality over 10 years (1998-2000 to 2010-2012) was also assessed. In the BRHS, tooth loss, fair/poor self-rated oral health and accumulation of oral health problems were associated with poor diet quality, after adjustment. Similar associations were reported for high intake of processed meat. Poor oral health was associated with the top quartile of percentage of energy content from saturated fat (self-rated oral health, OR 1·34, 95 % CI 1·02, 1·77). In the HABC Study, no significant associations were observed for diet quality after adjustment. Periodontal disease was associated with the top quartile of percentage of energy content from saturated fat (OR 1·48, 95 % CI 1·09, 2·01). In the BRHS, persistent low diet quality was associated with higher risk of tooth loss and accumulation of oral health problems. Older individuals with oral health problems had poorer diets and consumed fewer nutrient-rich foods. Persistent poor diet quality was associated with oral health problems later in life.

Abstract
Xerostomia and salivary gland hypofunction are prevalent conditions in older people and may adversely influence the intake of certain foods, notably fruit and vegetables. Here, we aimed to investigate whether xerostomia and salivary gland hypofunction were associated with a lower intake of fruit and vegetables. The study included 621 community-dwelling adults, mean age 75⋅2 ± 6⋅4 years, 58⋅9 % female, who had participated in the Copenhagen City Heart Study follow-up, and undergone interviews regarding food intake (preceding month), oral and general health (xerostomia, taste alterations, diseases, medication, alcohol consumption and smoking), clinical oral examination and measurements of unstimulated and chewing-stimulated whole saliva flow rates. The average total energy intake (8⋅4 ± 2⋅7 MJ) and protein energy percentage (14⋅8 ± 3⋅1 %) were slightly below recommendations. The average fruit (234⋅7 ± 201⋅2 g/d) and vegetables (317⋅3 ± 157⋅4 g/d) intakes were within recommendations. Xerostomia and hyposalivation were more prevalent in women than in men (16⋅4 v. 7⋅1 %, P < 0⋅001 and 40⋅7 v. 27⋅5 %, P < 0⋅001). Multiple linear regression analyses revealed that older age (β -0⋅009, se 0⋅003, P = 0⋅005), smoking (β -0⋅212, se 0⋅060, P = 0⋅0005) and wearing complete dentures/being partially or fully edentulous (β -0⋅141, se 0⋅048, P = 0⋅003), but neither xerostomia nor salivary flow rates were associated with an inadequate fruit and vegetable intake, after adjustment for covariates. Older age, smoking, tooth loss and denture-wearing were stronger determinants of low fruit and vegetable intakes than xerostomia and salivary hypofunction supporting the importance of dietary counselling and maintenance of oral health and an adequate masticatory performance.

Abstract
This study examined the prevalence of self-perceived chewing discomfort depending on the type of dental prosthesis used in South Korean adults. The subjects were 12,802 people over 20 years of age who participated in a health interview and dental examination. Chewing discomfort was examined using a self-assessed report with a structured questionnaire. Using multivariable logistic regression analysis, adjusted odds ratios were evaluated along with their 95% confidence intervals (α = 0.05). After adjusting for covariates, including age, gender, smoking, drinking, hypertension, diabetes, body mass index, education, income, and toothbrushing frequency, the odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) for chewing discomfort in groups without a dental prosthesis, with fixed dental prostheses, with removable partial dentures, and with removable complete dentures were 1 (reference), 1.363 (1.213-1.532), 2.275 (1.879-2.753), and 2.483 (1.929-3.197), respectively. The association between the prevalence of chewing discomfort and the type of dental prosthesis used was statistically significant even after adjusting for various confounders (p < 0.0001). The type of dental prosthesis was related to chewing discomfort among South Korean adults.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study investigated whether oral health status, defined as number of natural teeth and subsequent prosthodontic rehabilitation, was associated with future dietary intake and diet quality in older adults in The Prospective Epidemiological Study of Myocardial Infarction (PRIME). METHODS PRIME was originally established to explore cardiovascular risk factors in 50-59 year old men in Northern Ireland (1991-1994). A rescreening phase assessed oral health (2001-2004), while diet was assessed in 2015. Diet quality was characterised by the Dietary Diversity Score and Mediterranean Diet Score. In the current analysis, associations between oral health status, dietary intake and quality were assessed using regression models in 1096 participants. RESULTS Amongst study participants, the overall mean number of teeth was 18.5, 51.5 % had ≥21 natural teeth and 49.6 % wore dentures. Oral health status was categorised into five groups: 21-28 teeth with (n = 111) and without (n = 453) dentures, 1-20 teeth with (n = 354) and without (n = 99) dentures and edentate with dentures (n = 79). After full adjustment, men with ≥21 teeth and dentures had a higher future intake of fruit, vegetables, and nuts, and diet quality scores, compared to those with <21 teeth with dentures. Edentate men with dentures were less likely to achieve the future fruit dietary recommendation. CONCLUSIONS Having ≥21 natural remaining teeth positively affected the future intake of fruit, vegetables, and nuts, as well as diet quality. Dentures may be beneficial in men with ≥21 natural remaining teeth, as they were associated with an increased future intake of fruit, vegetables, and nuts and better diet quality. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Oral health status is associated with dietary intake, after an average time period of 13 years, with those with a larger number of natural teeth having a better diet quality. Further research is required to investigate this relationship in larger, diverse populations with more detailed dietary assessment.

Association of the Dietary Index Underpinning the Nutri-Score Label with Oral Health: Preliminary Evidence from a Large, Population-Based Sample. Nutrients 2019; 11:nu11091998. Abstract
The 2017 implementation in France of the front-of-package nutrition label known as ‘Nutri-Score’ was intended as a public health strategy to help individuals make healthier food choices at the point of purchase and thus help reduce chronic disease on the population level. Nutri-Score and the associated individual-level dietary index are based on the British Food Standards Agency Nutrient Profiling System (FSAm-NPS-DI). Prior research has shed light on the relation between the dietary index and various physical health outcomes, yet no studies have explored the link with oral health. We analyzed the cross-sectional association of the dietary index with oral health in a population-based sample of 33,231 adults from the French NutriNet-Santé cohort. Oral health (main dependent variable) was assessed in 2016 with the General Oral Health Assessment Index; FSAm-NPS-DI (main independent variable) was calculated using ≥3 non-consecutive 24-h dietary records, following established methodology; lower scores corresponded to better diet quality. Age-specific associations were explored via multivariable linear regression. Fully-adjusted models showed modest yet significant associations between the dietary index and oral health in younger (18–59 years) and older (60+ years) participants, with the strength of the model being more pronounced in the former compared with the latter age group (F value: 28.5 versus 6.3, both p < 0.0001). Higher diet quality was associated with a somewhat lower risk of oral health problems. Albeit preliminary, the findings support the relevance of dietary indices underpinning nutrition labels such as the Nutri-Score. Future research is needed to confirm the associations.

Abstract
Background: An amount of cognition decline is normal with aging; however, intrinsic and extrinsic risk factors may exacerbate it, affecting social and occupational tasks. Masticatory dysfunction (MD), as a general term, refers to an impairment in the masticatory function triggered by a structural factor, such as tooth loss; functional factors, such as weaker bite force or a poorer masticatory performance; or both factors. MD acting as a source of chronic stress, promotes functional and morphological changes on the hippocampus, a brain area crucial for learning and memory abilities. This study aimed to synthesize evidence on the association between MD and cognitive deficit (CD), and demonstrate whether might be adequately considered as a risk factor. Methods: Observational studies were screened in seven online databases; the search strategy (PECO) was focused in observational studies with humans as a population (P), presenting groups exposed (E), and non-exposed (C) to tooth loss, in which cognition parameters were measured and compared between groups (O). The final selection included only those studies comparing the effect in cognition between subjects having ≥20 remaining teeth and <20 remaining teeth, considering the latter as a structural factor triggering MD by the literature. Searching and data extraction were conducted following PRISMA guidelines. Qualitative and risk of bias evaluations were performed. The meta-analysis (MA) was constructed including the odds ratio (OR) and its 95% confidence interval (CI) comparing two groups—with/without MD. The level of evidence was rated by Grading Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) approach. Results: In total, 5,666 citations were identified, 14 accomplished our eligibility criteria, and nine were include in the MA. The MA demonstrates that individuals with MD had 46% higher chance to presented CD (OR 2.24 [1.73, 2.90], p < 0.00001, I2 = 46%). The level of evidence was rated as low by GRADE. Conclusion: Despite the low certainty in evidence, according to our MA, MD is positively associated with increased risk of CD. However, more studies including other factors underlying MD and similar measurements should be conducted to obtain a strong estimate of the risk.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the eating experience and eating-related quality of life (ERQOL) of community-dwelling older adults with tooth loss. METHOD Nineteen older adults from the clinics of a northeast US dental school who met inclusion criteria (>65 y old, <20 teeth, and no dentures) composed the sample. For this mixed methods study, demographic characteristics, number and location of teeth, Mini Nutritional Assessment-Short Form score, and anthropometrics data were collected; semistructured interviews were conducted to collect in-depth information about the eating experience and ERQOL. Thematic analysis was completed with NVivo 12 software (QSR International). RESULTS Participants' mean age was 71.3 y (SD = 5.2); 52.6% (n = 10) were women; 63.2% (n = 12) were Black or African American. The mean Mini Nutritional Assessment-Short Form score of 12.1 was reflective of normal nutrition status; 31.6% (n = 6) of patients were at risk for malnutrition or were malnourished. Fifteen percent (n = 3) were fully edentulous; 84.2% (n = 16) had 1 to 19 teeth (mean = 10.8, SD = 6.5). The 2 overarching themes identified were adaptive and maladaptive behavioral responses to tooth loss. Adaptive strategies included modification in food preparation and cooking methods, food texture selection, meal timing, and approaches to chewing. Maladaptive behaviors included food avoidance and limiting eating and smiling in front of others. Psychosocial factors, including finances, limited food choices and ERQOL, whereas the support of family and friends enhanced ERQOL according to participants. CONCLUSION Older adults with tooth loss exhibit both adaptive and maladaptive behaviors that affect their eating experience, dietary intake, and ERQOL. While many expressed positive adaptive coping strategies, they also described maladaptive behaviors, including avoidance of healthy foods and limiting eating during social interactions, which may affect their nutritional status and overall health and well-being. Further research is needed to explore how duration and severity of tooth loss influence these behaviors and risk of malnutrition. Interprofessional approaches are needed to support positive adaptation and coping with tooth loss. KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER STATEMENT The results of this study can be used by health professionals treating patients with tooth loss in an effort to improve their eating experience and eating-related quality of life. The findings provide data to support further studies and the need for evidence-based guidelines and educational materials to meet the unique needs of older adults with tooth loss.

Abstract
Background Oral health is thought to be associated with diet quality, and socioeconomic status (SES) affects both oral health and diet. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between the number of teeth and dietary intake as well as nutritional biomarker, considering the subjects’ SES. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of data from 2049 individuals aged ≥ 50 years from the National Integrated Project for Prospective Observation of Non-communicable Disease and its Trends in the Aged 2010. The number of remaining teeth was categorized into age-specific quartiles (Q1 to Q4). We assessed the adjusted means and 95% confidence intervals for dietary variables by the number of teeth using analysis of covariance. Stratified analyses by SES were also conducted. Results The intake of grain products was 31 g higher, and those of vegetables and meat were 30 g and 8 g lower, respectively, in Q1 (fewer teeth) than in Q4 (more teeth). Carbohydrate intake was higher whereas protein, minerals (potassium, magnesium, and zinc), vitamins (vitamins A, E, B1, B6, β-carotene, and folic acid), and dietary fiber intakes were lower among individuals with fewer teeth. Adjusted mean serum albumin levels were low in Q1. The associations between the number of teeth and dietary intake were more evident in individuals with a low SES. Conclusions Having few remaining teeth was associated with a low nutrient intake and low serum albumin levels in middle-aged and older Japanese adults, and these associations were more evident in individuals with low SES. Abstract
BACKGROUND As tooth loss decreases in an aging United States, retaining enough natural teeth for function is important for quality of life. METHODS The authors used data from the 1999 through 2004 and the 2009 through 2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys to assess changes in tooth loss in adults 50 years or older. The authors evaluated changes in edentulism, retaining all teeth, and having a functional dentition (21 or more natural teeth) according to poverty status. RESULTS Edentulism was lower in 2009 through 2014 than in 1999 through 2004 (11% versus 17%) for adults 50 years or older, but this decrease was not significant among the poor (people at < 100% of the federal poverty guideline; P > .05). Complete tooth retention improved from 14% to 21% between 1999 through 2004 and 2009 through 2014 for people 50 years or older (P < .05). Gains were attributable mostly to adults who were nonpoor (≥ 200% federal poverty guideline). More older adults had a functional dentition in 2009 through 2014 than in 1999 through 2004 (67% versus 55%; P < .05), although the increases generally were significant only for those not living in poverty. CONCLUSIONS Complete tooth loss has decreased by more than 75% for those aged 65 through 74 years over the past 5 decades in the United States. Improvements in tooth loss measures, such as edentulism and complete tooth retention, have been most significant among the nonpoor, whereas those who are poor have experienced fewer improvements. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS An aging population is experiencing less edentulism and greater tooth retention, so older adults may need more regular oral health care and prevention services to address concerns such as root caries and periodontal disease.

Abstract
Objectives To identify relationships between masticatory ability and age, and dental and prosthodontic status amongst an institutionalized elderly dentate population in China. Materials and methods A sample of 512 elders living in eight nursing homes in Qingdao was categorized based on a hierarchical dental functional classification system with and without tooth replacements. Masticatory disability scores (MDSs) were analyzed using multiple regression models with only age, and age and dentition variables for participants having ≥ 10 natural and those having < 10 natural teeth in each jaw. Results Overall, associations between MDS and age, number of teeth, and number of teeth replaced by dental prostheses were identified. For participants having ≥ 10 natural teeth in each jaw, no significant associations between MDS and age and dental and prosthodontic status were found. Participants having < 10 natural teeth in each jaw had higher MDS (increasing chewing difficulties) at higher ages. However, when “premolar region sufficient” and “molar region sufficient” were included, MDS was not associated with age, but with these dentition variables. For participants having ≥ 10 teeth including prosthodontically replaced teeth in each jaw, age was the only variable associated with MDS. For participants having < 10 teeth including teeth replaced in each jaw, the significant factor was “premolar region sufficient.” Overall, lower MDS was associated with increasing number of teeth, as well as with increasing number of teeth replaced by dental prostheses. Conclusions In this population of institutionalized dentate elderly, masticatory ability was significantly associated with dental and prosthodontic status. Clinical relevance For institutionalized elderly, having less than ten natural teeth in each jaw is associated with chewing problems. Most important dentition factor is the presence of three to four premolar pairs. Teeth added by partial removable dental prostheses compensate impaired masticatory ability due to tooth loss for 50% compared to natural teeth.

Abstract
Resumo O objetivo deste artigo é verificar a condição bucal e a capacidade mastigatória autopercebidas em idosos longevos (≥ 80 anos). Foram utilizados dados do estudo multicêntrico FIBRA. A amostra foi composta por 2.341 indivíduos com ausência de déficit cognitivo, com idade ≥ 65 anos, no período entre 2008 e 2009, quando os idosos foram submetidos à coleta de dados. Quanto ao desfecho, a idade foi dicotomizada em 65-79 e 80 anos ou mais. A associação entre longevidade e as variáveis sociodemográficas, comportamentais, de saúde geral e bucal e a capacidade mastigatória autopercebida foram avaliadas pela regressão de Poisson. Dados completos disponíveis para 2.126 idosos. A idade média foi 70,91 (DP = ±4,11) anos entre os idosos jovens e 82,70 (DP = ±2,61) entre os longevos. A amostra de idosos com idade ≥ 80 anos foi de 11,7%. Baixa escolaridade, estado civil solteiro e ausência de trabalho estiveram associados à longevidade, assim como autorrelato de não possuir dentes naturais e dificuldade ou dor ao mastigar alimentos duros. Os resultados sugerem a associação entre longevidade com características sociodemográficas e de saúde bucal.

Abstract
We aimed to assess the association between oral health, in terms of its impact on quality of life, and diet quality expressed as adherence to dietary guidelines. We analyzed cross-sectional data from the French NutriNet-Santé general population-based e-cohort (N = 18,263 adults; mean age = 56.5 ± 13.8 years). The main independent variable, oral health-related quality of life, was assessed in 2016 with the GOHAI instrument (maximum score = 60). The main dependent variable, diet’s nutritional quality, was assessed with the mPNNS-GS score (maximum score = 13.5) measuring adherence to French dietary guidelines and computed on the basis of repeated 24-h dietary records. Multivariable linear regression models were fit. Mean GOHAI score was 54.5 ± 4.3 and mean mPNNS-GS score was 7.7 ± 1.6. Among participants aged 18–64 years, those scoring ≤50 on GOHAI (poor oral health with a detrimental impact on quality of life) were less likely to adhere to dietary guidelines than participants scoring 57–60 points (good oral health) (beta = −0.18, 95% CI: −0.26, −0.09; p < 0.0001). Among participants aged 65+ years, those scoring 51–56 points on GOHAI (average oral health with some negative impact on quality of life) were less likely to adhere to dietary guidelines than were participants scoring in the range 57–60 (beta = −0.23, 95% CI: −0.33, −0.13; p < 0.0001). The findings suggested modest age-dependent associations between oral health-related quality of life and diet quality. Confirmation is needed longitudinally with representative samples and accounting for diet quality evolution.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This systematic literature review aims to summarize the existing scientific evidence about the association between a reduced salivary function and food consumption in elderly people. METHODS A validated search strategy in two databases (PubMed and ISI Web of Knowledge) was carried out and retrieved papers together with their reference lists were screened by two independent reviewers. The quality of the included studies was critically appraised via the Quality Assessment Criteria for Evaluating Primary Research Papers. RESULTS From the originally identified studies (n=391), only 15 articles (all cross-sectional studies) met the pre-fixed inclusion/exclusion criteria. The methodological quality of the included studies was in general good, although only 3 from 15 obtained the maximum score. The control of confounding factors was the quality variable more poorly rated in the selected studies. Salivary hypofunction was associated with a decrease of the objective chewing and swallowing abilities and taste perception. Moreover, most of the selected studies showed a relationship between salivary hypofunction and food consumption (in terms of appetite loss, unbalanced dietary intake and malnutrition), although no causality could be established. CONCLUSIONS This study highlights the fact that salivary hypofunction definition and measurements are different across the studies. Therefore, future research efforts should focus on establishing a gold standard to define and identify salivary hypofunction throughout life and on performing longitudinal studies controlling for confounding factors to establish causality.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to evaluate the potential risk for localized aggressive periodontitis (LAgP) in African American children by detection of the potential periodontal pathogen Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (Aa) using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and microbiome analysis. METHODS Twenty-one pre-adolescents (age range equals 10.7 to 13.1 years old) were recruited, for this IRB-approved study. Oral examination included limited periodontal examination determining bleeding index (BOP) and periodontal probing (PD). An oral mucosa sample was used for analysis. RESULTS Nine of 21 children were Aa+ by PCR. The Aa+ group had a significantly higher proportion of teeth with BOP and PD greater than four mm than the Aa- group (P=0.014 and 0.006 for percent BOP and percent PD equal to or greater than four mm, respectively; Mann Whitney Test). No significant differences in microbe abundance or composition were found from comparison of Aa+ versus Aa- samples. CONCLUSIONS Detection of Aa from preadolescent African American children was associated with signs of periodontal inflammation. Although none of these children were diagnosed with LAgP, PCR targeting Aa could be a risk factor. Further study is indicated; however, the usefulness of PCR in dental practice setting to assess risk may be cost-effective for early diagnosis and prevention of LAgP.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Objective Evaluate the factors associated with diet quality of older adults from the city of São Caetano do Sul, São Paulo, Brazil. Methods A cross-sectional study was carried out on a sample of 295 older adults receiving care in health care units in São Caetano do Sul. Diet quality was assessed using the Brazilian Healthy Eating Index. The associations between the diet quality mean score and the socio-demographic, economic, and anthropometric characteristics and lifestyle and health conditions were verified using multiple linear regression. Results Lower diet quality mean score were associated with the variables: marital status (widowed or separated) (β=-2.02; p=0.047), retired (β=-4.24; p=0.034), and smoking (β=-8.06; p=0.001); whereas higher diet quality mean score were associated with higher education level (9 years or more) (β=3.49; p=0.013). Conclusion Individuals with higher education level had better diet quality, and those who were widowed or separated, retired, and smokers had worse diet quality indicating that socio-demographic, economic, and lifestyle are factors that can influence food choice of older adults.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the association between oral health status and central obesity (CO) in Brazilian independent-living elderly. A cross-sectional study was carried out in a sample of 489 elderly, who were participants of the Study on Aging and Longevity, in Londrina, state of Parana. The number of natural teeth and use of prostheses were evaluated according to the World Health Organization criteria. The presence of CO was assessed using measures of waist circumference (WC) and waist-hip ratio (WHR). Information concerning sociodemographic profile and some systemic conditions was also collected. Data were analyzed using stepwise logistic regression, α=5%. According to WC and WHR measures, the prevalence of central obesity was 79.3% and 76.1%, respectively. CO according to WC was not associated with oral status. Considering the WHR measure, the following oral conditions were associated to CO: having fewer natural teeth (OR = 2.61; 95%CI = 1.17-5.80), being edentulous and wearing both upper and lower complete dentures (OR = 2.34; 95%CI = 1.11-4.93), and being edentulous wearing only the upper complete denture (OR = 2.64; 95%CI = 1.01-6.95). Traditional risk factors for CO such as gender, dyslipidemia, hypertension and diabetes were associated with both measures. A poor oral health due to extensive tooth loss, whether partial or complete, even if rehabilitated by removable prostheses, may be considered a good predictor of CO in Brazilian independent-living elderly.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Involuntary weight loss and underweight increase the risks of mortality and disability in older people. However, the association and interaction of poor oral health and dietary intake with body mass index (BMI) have not been elucidated. METHODS Data were analyzed for 96 794 respondents aged >65 years who were randomly selected from 31 Japanese municipalities in the Japan Gerontological Evaluation Study. Weight loss was defined as ≥2-3 kg of loss over the preceding 6 months. BMI was evaluated in respondents without weight loss. Multiple logistic regression analysis was performed with weight loss, underweight, and obesity as dependent variables and having fewer teeth (<20) and infrequent food intake as independent variables, with adjustment for potential confounders. RESULTS Weight loss was associated with having fewer teeth (men: odds ratio [OR] 1.3; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.2-1.3; women: OR 1.2; 95% CI, 1.1-1.3) and infrequent fruit/vegetable intake (men: OR 1.1; 95% CI, 1.1-1.2; women: OR 1.4; 95% CI, 1.3-1.5) and fish/meat intake (OR 1.2; 95% CI, 1.1-1.3 for both sexes). No interaction was observed between having fewer teeth and food intake. Obesity was associated with the same factors: having fewer teeth (ORs 1.2 and 1.3 for men and women, respectively) and infrequent intake of fruit/vegetables (ORs 1.1 and 1.2 for men and women, respectively) and fish/meat (OR 1.1 for both sexes). Infrequent fruit/vegetable intake showed a higher OR for underweight in women with fewer teeth than for others. CONCLUSIONS Having fewer teeth and infrequent food intake were associated with both weight loss and obesity. A significant interaction was observed in the associations of having fewer teeth and infrequent food intake with underweight in women.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This paper reviews potential age-associated risk factors for satisfactory oral function and oral disease to inform the development of care pathways for the older person. BACKGROUND Alterations in dental status or both physical and biological change associated with age can impact on oral disease and oral function. MATERIALS AND METHODS Older people tend to have fewer teeth and some are edentulous. Physical and biological changes in bodily function with age can also affect oral health care either directly or indirectly. RESULTS Reductions in chewing ability impact on the foods people choose to eat because of perceived difficulty with chewing, with a potentially deleterious affect on dietary quality. This is worse in people with xerostomia where chewing and swallowing are impaired anyway. Change in the cell-mediated inflammatory response impacts on gingival and periodontal disease manifestation and progression. Sarcopenia makes the physical act of toothbrushing more challenging. Caries remains a clinical problem that affects both the crowns and the roots of teeth. Coronal lesions tend to be around existing restorations where there is no evidence base about care/prevention. CONCLUSION The physical and clinical changes that occur with ageing require an altered pattern of care for older people which is adjusted to their disease risk and encourage diversity of foods consumption.

Abstract
To date, the effect of tooth loss on all-cause mortality among elderly patients with a different weight group has not been assessed. This retrospective cohort study evaluated the data obtained from a government-sponsored, annual physical examination program for elderly citizens residing in Taipei City during 2005 to 2007, and follow-up to December 31, 2010. We recruited 55,651 eligible citizens of Taipei City aged ≥ 65 years, including 29,572 men and 26,079 women, in our study. Their mortality data were ascertained based on the national death files. The number of missing teeth was used as a representative of oral health status. We used multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression analysis to determine the association between tooth loss and all-cause mortality. After adjustment for all confounders, the hazard ratios (HRs) of all-cause mortality in participants with no teeth, 1 to 9 teeth, and 10 to 19 teeth were 1.36 [95% confidence interval (CI): 1.15-1.61], 1.24 (95% CI: 1.08-1.42), and 1.19 (95% CI: 1.09-1.31), respectively, compared with participants with 20 or more teeth. A significant positive correlation of body mass index (BMI) with all-cause mortality was found in underweight and overweight elderly patients and was represented as a U-shaped curve. Subgroup analysis revealed a significant positive correlation in underweight (no teeth: HR = 1.49, 95% CI: 1.21-1.83; 1-9 teeth: HR = 1.23, 95% CI: 1.03-1.47; 10-19 teeth: HR = 1.20, 95% CI: 1.06-1.36) and overweight participants (no teeth: HR = 1.37, 95% CI: 1.05-1.79; 1-9 teeth: HR = 1.27, 95% CI: 1.07-1.52). The number of teeth lost is associated with an increased risk of all-cause mortality, particularly for participants with underweight and overweight.

Abstract
ABSTRACTThe aim of the research presented is to determine the influence of socio-economic factors in childhood and mid-life on multiple tooth loss and chewing problems in mid- and late life in three Swedish birth cohorts (1903–1910, 1911–1920 and 1921–1925). Longitudinal national Swedish surveys were used for the analysis. Participants were interviewed in mid-life in 1968 and later in life (77–99 years of age) in 2002. Childhood socio-economic positions (SEP) did not result in different odds of multiple tooth loss and chewing problems in mid- and late life, but persons with higher mid-life SEP had lower odds. Persons born into the 1921–1925 birth cohort had significantly lower odds of multiple tooth loss in late life than the 1903–1910 birth cohort. Women had higher odds of losing multiple teeth than men in late life but not mid-life. Neither gender nor childhood and mid-life SEP predicted chewing problems late in life, but older people with multiple tooth loss had higher odds of chewing difficulty than those with mainly natural teeth. Childhood conditions may contribute to multiple tooth loss in mid-life, which subsequently contributes to multiple tooth loss in late life. Tooth loss in late life is strongly associated with difficulty chewing hard food. Prevalence of multiple tooth loss is higher in women than in men in late life but not in mid-life.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Oral health status and oral health problems can affect eating habits and thus consequently the nutritional status of frail older people. OBJECTIVES To assess older service house residents' dentition and its associations with nutritional status and eating habits, and as well as to explore the prognostic value of dentition status for mortality. DESIGN A cross-sectional study with a three-year follow-up. METHODS In 2007, we assessed the nutritional status of all residents in service houses in the two cities of Helsinki and Espoo in Finland (N=2188). Altogether 1475 subjects (67%) participated in the study; dentition status data were available for 1369 of them. Using a personal interview and assessment, trained nurses familiar to the resident collected the subjects' demographic data, medical history, functional and cognitive status, information on dentition status, oral symptoms, eating habits and diets. We assessed nutritional status with the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA), and retrieved information on mortality from central registers on 6 July 2010. RESULTS Edentulousness was common; more than half of the residents (52%) had lost all their teeth: 7% (n=94) were totally edentulous without prosthesis (Group 1), 45% (n=614) had removable dentures (Group 2), and 48% (n = 661) of the residents, had some natural teeth left (Group 3). Dentition status was associated with age, gender, education and disability. According to the MNA, 13% were malnourished, 65% were at risk for malnutrition, and 22% were well nourished. Edentulousness without prosthesis was associated with malnutrition, oral symptoms and infrequent use of oral care services. In Group 1, 52% were deceased during follow-up period. The respective figures for Groups 2 and 3 were 48% and 40% (p=0.004). However, in Cox regression analysis adjusted for age, gender, comorbidity and MNA score, dentition status no longer predicted mortality. CONCLUSION Edentulousness is still common among older service housing residents. Edentulousness without prosthesis was associated with poor nutritional status, oral symptoms and infrequent use of dental services. These findings suggest the need for co-operation between nursing staff and oral care services.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION This retrospective study evaluated the survival of endodontically treated teeth (ETTs) and investigated factors influencing restoration and tooth survival. METHODS Data from 795 ETTs were recorded, and success (restoration still intact) and survival (restoration intact or failed/repaired/replaced and tooth still in situ) were analyzed using Kaplan-Meier statistics. A multivariate Cox regression analysis was performed to assess the variables influencing success and survival. RESULTS At the end of the observation period (mean observation time = 4.48 years), 45 teeth had been extracted (annual failure rate for survival = 1.9% at 9.6 years) and 114 restorations had received a restorative follow-up treatment (annual failure rate for success = 4.9% at 9.6 years). CONCLUSIONS ETTs showed acceptable survival and success in the long-term. Variables showing significant influence on survival were the number of teeth in the dentition and the presence of decay at the moment the patient entered the practice.

Abstract
The Healthy Eating Index (HEI) is a measure of diet quality in terms of conformance with federal dietary guidance. Publication of the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans prompted an interagency working group to update the HEI. The HEI-2010 retains several features of the 2005 version: (a) it has 12 components, many unchanged, including nine adequacy and three moderation components; (b) it uses a density approach to set standards, eg, per 1,000 calories or as a percentage of calories; and (c) it employs least-restrictive standards; ie, those that are easiest to achieve among recommendations that vary by energy level, sex, and/or age. Changes to the index include: (a) the Greens and Beans component replaces Dark Green and Orange Vegetables and Legumes; (b) Seafood and Plant Proteins has been added to capture specific choices from the protein group; (c) Fatty Acids, a ratio of polyunsaturated and monounsaturated to saturated fatty acids, replaces Oils and Saturated Fat to acknowledge the recommendation to replace saturated fat with monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids; and (d) a moderation component, Refined Grains, replaces the adequacy component, Total Grains, to assess overconsumption. The HEI-2010 captures the key recommendations of the 2010 Dietary Guidelines and, like earlier versions, will be used to assess the diet quality of the US population and subpopulations, evaluate interventions, research dietary patterns, and evaluate various aspects of the food environment.

Abstract
An index that assesses the multidimensional components of the diet across the lifecycle is useful in describing diet quality. The purpose of this study was to use the Healthy Eating Index-2005, a measure of diet quality in terms of conformance to the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, to describe the diet quality of Americans by varying sociodemographic characteristics in order to provide insight as to where diets need to improve. The Healthy Eating Index-2005 scores were estimated using 1 day of dietary intake data provided by participants in the 2003-2004 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Mean daily intakes of foods and nutrients, expressed per 1,000 kilocalories, were estimated using the population ratio method and compared with standards that reflect the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Participants included 3,286 children (2 to 17 years), 3,690 young and middle-aged adults (18 to 64 years), and 1,296 older adults (65+ years). Results are reported as percentages of maximum scores and tested for significant differences (P ≤ 0.05) by age, sex, race/ethnicity, income, and education levels. Children and older adults had better-quality diets than younger and middle-aged adults; women had better-quality diets than men; Hispanics had better-quality diets than blacks and whites; and diet quality of adults, but not children, generally improved with income level, except for sodium. The diets of Americans, regardless of socioeconomic status, are far from optimal. Problematic dietary patterns were found among all sociodemographic groups. Major improvements in the nutritional health of the American public can be made by improving eating patterns.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Poor oral health has previously been related to high body mass index (BMI). We aimed at exploring the link between BMI and several oral health markers, after adjustment for dietary patterns and plasma insulin, both of which could act as mediators. SUBJECTS AND METHODS Dental examination was performed in a sample of 186 French subjects aged 35-64 years and selected from the general population to assess number of missing teeth, periodontitis, clinical attachment loss (CAL), probing pocket depth (PD), gingival index (GI) and plaque index (PI). Data collection also included a food-frequency questionnaire. BMI (considered as outcome variable) was categorized into quartiles, and as BMI<25; 25 ≤BMI<30; and BMI ≥ 30 kg m(-2) . RESULTS After adjustment for age, gender, education level, smoking, physical activity, energy intake and C-reactive protein, BMI was statistically associated with missing teeth, PD and PI, but not with CAL, GI or periodontitis. After additional adjustment for 'high-carbohydrate' diet and plasma insulin or HOMA (homeostasis model assessment) index for insulin resistance, the statistical relationship between BMI and oral variables remained significant only for PD and PI. CONCLUSIONS Plaque index, reflecting dental plaque, and PD, closely linked with periodontal inflammation and infection, are statistically associated with high BMI and obesity, independently of dietary patterns and insulin resistance.
