On the Mechanism of Alkylammonium Ligands Binding to the Surface of CsPbBr3 Nanocrystals

Surface Structure of Lecithin-Capped Cesium Lead Halide Perovskite Nanocrystals Using Solid-State and Dynamic Nuclear Polarization NMR Spectroscopy

Inorganic colloidal cesium lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) encapsulated by surface capping ligands exhibit tremendous potential in optoelectronic applications, with their surface structure playing a pivotal role in enhancing their photophysical properties. Soy lecithin, a tightly binding zwitterionic surface-capping ligand, has recently facilitated the high-yield synthesis of stable ultraconcentrated and ultradilute colloids of CsPbX3 NCs, unlocking a myriad of potential device applications. However, the atomic-level understanding of the ligand-terminated surface structure remains uncertain. Herein, we use a versatile solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopic approach, in combination with dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) and atomistic molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, to explore the effect of lecithin on the core-to-surface structures of CsPbX3 (X = Cl or Br) perovskites, sized from micron to nanoscale. Surface-selective (cross-polarization, CP) solid-state and DNP NMR (133Cs and 207Pb) methods were used to differentiate the unique surface and core chemical environments, while the head-groups {trimethylammonium [-N(CH3)3+] and phosphate (-PO4-)} of lecithin were assigned via 1H, 13C, and 31P NMR spectroscopy. A direct approach to determining the surface structure by capitalizing on the unique heteronuclear dipolar couplings between the lecithin ligand (1H and 31P) and the surface of the CsPbCl3 NCs (133Cs and 207Pb) is demonstrated. The 1H-133Cs heteronuclear correlation (HETCOR) DNP NMR indicates an abundance of Cs on the NC surface and an intimate proximity of the -N(CH3)3+ groups to the surface and subsurface 133Cs atoms, supported by 1H{133Cs} rotational-echo double-resonance (REDOR) NMR spectroscopy. Moreover, the 1H-31P{207Pb} CP REDOR dephasing curve provides average internuclear distance information that allows assessment of -PO4- groups binding to the subsurface Pb atoms. Atomistic MD simulations of ligand-capped CsPbCl3 surfaces aid in the interpretation of this information and suggest that ligand -N(CH3)3+ and -PO4- head-groups substitute Cs+ and Cl- ions, respectively, at the CsCl-terminated surface of the NCs. These detailed atomistic insights into surface structures can further guide the engineering of various relevant surface-capping zwitterionic ligands for diverse metal halide perovskite NCs.

Anisotropic electronic coupling in three-dimensional assembly of CsPbBr3 quantum dots

Cesium lead halide (CsPbX3, X = Cl, Br, or I) perovskite quantum dots (PeQDs) show promise for next-generation optoelectronics. In this study, we controlled the electronic coupling between PeQD multilayers using a layer-by-layer method and dithiol linkers of varying structures. The energy shift of the first excitonic peak from monolayer to bilayer decreases exponentially with increasing interlayer spacer distance, indicating the resonant tunnelling effect. X-ray diffraction measurements revealed anisotropic inter-PeQD distances in multiple layers. Photoluminescence (PL) analysis showed lower energy emission in the in-plane direction due to the electronic coupling in the out-of-plane direction, supporting the anisotropic electronic state in the PeQD multilayers. Temperature-dependent PL and PL lifetimes indicated changes in exciton behaviour due to the delocalized electronic state in PeQD multilayers. Particularly, the electron-phonon coupling strength increased, and the exciton recombination rate decreased. This is the first study demonstrating controlled electronic coupling in a three-dimensional ordered structure, emphasizing the importance of the anisotropic electronic state for high-performance PeQDs devices.

Influence of Surface Chemistry on Metal Deposition Outcomes in Copper Selenide-Based Nanoheterostructure Synthesis

The use of nanoparticle surface chemistry to direct metal deposition has been well-studied in the modification of metal nanoparticle substrates but is not yet well-established for metal chalcogenide particle substrates, although integration of these particles into nanoheterostructures is of high interest. In this report, we investigate the effect of Cu2-xSe surface chemistry on the morphology of metal deposition on these plasmonic semiconductor nanoparticles. Specifically, we functionalize Cu2-xSe nanoparticles with a suite of 12 different ligands and investigate how different aspects of the ligand structure do or do not impact the morphology and extent of subsequent metal deposition on the Cu2-xSe surface. Surprisingly, our results indicate that the morphology of the resulting metal deposits and the extent of metal deposition onto the existing Cu2-xSe particle substrate are indistinguishable for the majority of ligands tested. An exception to these findings is observed for particles functionalized by quaternary alkylammonium bromides, which exhibit statistically distinct metal deposition patterns compared to all other ligands tested. We hypothesize that this unique behavior is due to a cooperative binding mechanism of the quaternary alkylammonium bromides to the surface of copper selenide. Taken together, these results yield both new strategies for controlling postsynthetic modification of copper selenide nanoparticles and also reveal limitations of surface chemistry-based approaches for this system.

Harnessing Pb-S Interactions for Long-Term Water Stability in Cesium Lead Halide Perovskite Nanocrystals

Lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (LHP NCs) have garnered attention as promising light-harvesting materials for optoelectronics and photovoltaic devices, attributed to their impressive optoelectronic properties. However, their susceptibility to moisture-induced degradation has hindered their practical applications. Despite various encapsulation strategies, challenges persist in maintaining their stability and optoelectronic performance simultaneously. Here, a ligand exchange approach is proposed using (11-mercaptoundecyl)-N,N,N-trimethylammonium bromide (MUTAB) to enhance the stability and dispersibility of CsPbBr3 (CPB) NCs in aqueous environments. MUTAB enables effective surface passivation of the CPB NCs via robust Pb-S interactions at the S-terminal while concurrently directing water molecules through the unbound cationic N-terminal or vice versa, ensuring water dispersibility and stability. Spectroscopic analysis confirms retained structural and optical integrity post-ligand exchange. Crucially, MUTAB-bound CPB NCs exhibit sustained charge transfer properties, demonstrated by aqueous colloidal oxidation reactions. This ligand exchange strategy offers a promising pathway for advancing LHP NCs toward practical optoelectronic and photocatalytic applications.

Exogenous Metal Cations in the Synthesis of CsPbBr3 Nanocrystals and Their Interplay with Tertiary Amines

Current syntheses of CsPbBr3 halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) rely on overstoichiometric amounts of Pb2+ precursors, resulting in unreacted lead ions at the end of the process. In our synthesis scheme of CsPbBr3 NCs, we replaced excess Pb2+ with different exogenous metal cations (M) and investigated their effect on the synthesis products. These cations can be divided into two groups: group 1 delivers monodisperse CsPbBr3 cubes capped with oleate species (as for the case when Pb2+ is used in excess) and with a photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) as high as 90% with some cations (for example with M = In3+); group 2 yields irregularly shaped CsPbBr3 NCs with broad size distributions. In both cases, the addition of a tertiary ammonium cation (didodecylmethylammonium, DDMA+) during the synthesis, after the nucleation of the NCs, reshapes the NCs to monodisperse truncated cubes. Such NCs feature a mixed oleate/DDMA+ surface termination with PLQY values of up to 97%. For group 1 cations this happens only if the ammonium cation is directly added as a salt (DDMA-Br), while for group 2 cations this happens even if the corresponding tertiary amine (DDMA) is added, instead of DDMA-Br. This is attributed to the fact that only group 2 cations can facilitate the protonation of DDMA by the excess oleic acid present in the reaction environment. In all cases studied, the incorporation of M cations is marginal, and the reshaping of the NCs is only transient: if the reactions are run for a long time, the truncated cubes evolve to cubes.

Surface-Engineered Cesium Lead Bromide Perovskite Nanocrystals for Enabling Photoreduction Activity

In recent years, colloidal lead halide perovskite (LHP) nanocrystals (NCs) have exhibited such intriguing light absorption properties to be contemplated as promising candidates for photocatalytic conversions. However, for effective photocatalysis, the light harvesting system needs to be stable under the reaction conditions propaedeutic to a specific transformation. Unlike photoinduced oxidative reaction pathways, photoreductions with LHP NCs are challenging due to their scarce compatibility with common hole scavengers like amines and alcohols. In this contribution, it is investigated the potential of CsPbBr3 NCs protected by a suitably engineered bidentate ligand for the photoreduction of quinone species. Using an in situ approach for the construction of the passivating agent and a halide excess environment, quantum-confined nanocubes (average edge length = 6.0 ± 0.8 nm) are obtained with a low ligand density (1.73 ligand/nm2) at the NC surface. The bifunctional adhesion of the engineered ligand boosts the colloidal stability of the corresponding NCs, preserving their optical properties also in the presence of an amine excess. Despite their relatively short exciton lifetime (τAV = 3.7 ± 0.2 ns), these NCs show an efficient fluorescence quenching in the presence of the selected electron accepting quinones (1,4-naphthoquinone, 9,10-phenanthrenequinone, and 9,10-anthraquinone). All of these aspects demonstrate the suitability of the NCs for an efficient photoreduction of 1,4-naphthoquinone to 1,4-dihydroxynaphthalene in the presence of triethylamine as a hole scavenger. This chemical transformation is impracticable with conventionally passivated LHP NCs, thereby highlighting the potential of the surface functionalization in this class of nanomaterials for exploring new photoinduced reactivities.

Short-branched alkyl sulfobetaine-passivated CsPbBr3 nanocrystals for efficient green light emitting diodes

Inorganic cesium lead bromide nanocrystals (CsPbBr3 NCs) hold promising prospects for high performance green light-emitting diodes (LEDs) due to their exceptional color purity and high luminescence efficiency. However, the common ligands employed for passivating these indispensable NCs, such as long-chain organic ligands like oleic acid and oleylamine (OA/OAm), display highly dynamic binding and electronic insulating issues, thereby resulting in a low efficiency of the as-fabricated LEDs. Herein, we report a new zwitterionic short-branched alkyl sulfobetaine ligand, namely trioctyl(propyl-3-sulfonate) ammonium betaine (TOAB), to in situ passivate CsPbBr3 NCs via a feasible one-step solution synthesis, enabling efficiency improvement of CsPbBr3 NC-based LEDs. The zwitterionic TOAB ligand not only strengthened the surface passivation of CsPbBr3 NCs with a high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 97%, but also enhanced the carrier transport in the fabricated CsPbBr3 NC thin films due to the short-branched alkyl design. Consequently, CsPbBr3 NCs passivated with TOAB achieved a green LED with an external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 7.3% and a maximum luminance of 5716 cd m-2, surpassing those of LEDs based on insulating long-chain ligand-passivated NCs. Our work provides an effective surface passivation ligand design to enhance the performance of CsPbBr3 NC-based LEDs.

All-Perovskite Multicomponent Nanocrystal Superlattices

Nanocrystal superlattices (NC SLs) have long been sought as promising metamaterials, with nanoscale-engineered properties arising from collective and synergistic effects among the constituent building blocks. Lead halide perovskite (LHP) NCs come across as outstanding candidates for SL design, as they demonstrate collective light emission, known as superfluorescence, in single- and multicomponent SLs. Thus far, LHP NCs have only been assembled in single-component SLs or coassembled with dielectric NC building blocks acting solely as spacers between luminescent NCs. Here, we report the formation of multicomponent LHP NC-only SLs, i.e., using only CsPbBr3 NCs of different sizes as building blocks. The structural diversity of the obtained SLs encompasses the ABO6, ABO3, and NaCl structure types, all of which contain orientationally and positionally locked NCs. For the selected model system, the ABO6-type SL, we observed efficient NC coupling and Förster-like energy transfer from strongly confined 5.3 nm CsPbBr3 NCs to weakly confined 17.6 nm CsPbBr3 NCs, along with characteristic superfluorescence features at cryogenic temperatures. Spatiotemporal exciton dynamics measurements reveal that binary SLs exhibit enhanced exciton diffusivity compared to single-component NC assemblies across the entire temperature range (from 5 to 298 K). The observed coherent and incoherent NC coupling and controllable excitonic transport within the solid NC SLs hold promise for applications in quantum optoelectronic devices.

Facet-specific ligand dynamics: scaling the descriptors of Cs2AgBiBr6 nanocrystals

Facet control by primary amines can bolster the optoelectronic parameters of A2BIB'IIIX6 perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) with large indirect bandgaps. The 18-C amine competitively attaches to the (222) facet of Cs2AgBiBr6 (CABB) NCs, 16-C and 14-C bind to (400) and (440), and 12-C binds to (400). The NCs with only the (400) facet decrease the bandgap and exciton binding energy by 0.26 eV and 15 meV, respectively.

Colloidal Aziridinium Lead Bromide Quantum Dots

The compositional engineering of lead-halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) via the A-site cation represents a lever to fine-tune their structural and electronic properties. However, the presently available chemical space remains minimal since, thus far, only three A-site cations have been reported to favor the formation of stable lead-halide perovskite NCs, i.e., Cs+, formamidinium (FA), and methylammonium (MA). Inspired by recent reports on bulk single crystals with aziridinium (AZ) as the A-site cation, we present a facile colloidal synthesis of AZPbBr3 NCs with a narrow size distribution and size tunability down to 4 nm, producing quantum dots (QDs) in the regime of strong quantum confinement. NMR and Raman spectroscopies confirm the stabilization of the AZ cations in the locally distorted cubic structure. AZPbBr3 QDs exhibit bright photoluminescence with quantum efficiencies of up to 80%. Stabilized with cationic and zwitterionic capping ligands, single AZPbBr3 QDs exhibit stable single-photon emission, which is another essential attribute of QDs. In particular, didodecyldimethylammonium bromide and 2-octyldodecyl-phosphoethanolamine ligands afford AZPbBr3 QDs with high spectral stability at both room and cryogenic temperatures, reduced blinking with a characteristic ON fraction larger than 85%, and high single-photon purity (g(2)(0) = 0.1), all comparable to the best-reported values for MAPbBr3 and FAPbBr3 QDs of the same size.

Designer phospholipid capping ligands for soft metal halide nanocrystals

The success of colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) in science and optoelectronics is inextricable from their surfaces. The functionalization of lead halide perovskite NCs1-5 poses a formidable challenge because of their structural lability, unlike the well-established covalent ligand capping of conventional semiconductor NCs6,7. We posited that the vast and facile molecular engineering of phospholipids as zwitterionic surfactants can deliver highly customized surface chemistries for metal halide NCs. Molecular dynamics simulations implied that ligand-NC surface affinity is primarily governed by the structure of the zwitterionic head group, particularly by the geometric fitness of the anionic and cationic moieties into the surface lattice sites, as corroborated by the nuclear magnetic resonance and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy data. Lattice-matched primary-ammonium phospholipids enhance the structural and colloidal integrity of hybrid organic-inorganic lead halide perovskites (FAPbBr3 and MAPbBr3 (FA, formamidinium; MA, methylammonium)) and lead-free metal halide NCs. The molecular structure of the organic ligand tail governs the long-term colloidal stability and compatibility with solvents of diverse polarity, from hydrocarbons to acetone and alcohols. These NCs exhibit photoluminescence quantum yield of more than 96% in solution and solids and minimal photoluminescence intermittency at the single particle level with an average ON fraction as high as 94%, as well as bright and high-purity (about 95%) single-photon emission.

Synergistic Surface Modification for High-Efficiency Perovskite Nanocrystal Light-Emitting Diodes: Divalent Metal Ion Doping and Halide-Based Ligand Passivation

Surface defects of metal halide perovskite nanocrystals (PNCs) substantially compromise the optoelectronic performances of the materials and devices via undesired charge recombination. However, those defects, mainly the vacancies, are structurally entangled with each other in the PNC lattice, necessitating a delicately designed strategy for effective passivation. Here, a synergistic metal ion doping and surface ligand exchange strategy is proposed to passivate the surface defects of CsPbBr3 PNCs with various divalent metal (e.g., Cd2+ , Zn2+, and Hg2+ ) acetate salts and didodecyldimethylammonium (DDA+ ) via one-step post-treatment. The addition of metal acetate salts to PNCs is demonstrated to suppress the defect formation energy effectively via the ab initio calculations. The developed PNCs not only have near-unity photoluminescence quantum yield and excellent stability but also show luminance of 1175 cd m-2 , current efficiency of 65.48 cd A-1 , external quantum efficiency of 20.79%, wavelength of 514 nm in optimized PNC light-emitting diodes with Cd2+ passivator and DDA ligand. The "organic-inorganic" hybrid engineering approach is completely general and can be straightforwardly applied to any combination of quaternary ammonium ligands and source of metal, which will be useful in PNC-based optoelectronic devices such as solar cells, photodetectors, and transistors.

Understanding the Effect of the Synthetic Method and Surface Chemistry on the Properties of CsPbBr3 Nanoparticles

Over the last decade, the attractive properties of CsPbBr3 nanoparticles (NPs) have driven ever-increasing progress in the development of synthetic procedures to obtain high-quality NPs at high concentrations. Understanding how the properties of NPs are influenced by the composition of the reaction mixture in combination with the specific synthetic methodology is crucial, both for further elucidating the fundamental characteristics of this class of materials and for their manufacturing towards technological applications. This work aims to shed light on this aspect by synthesizing CsPbBr3 NPs by means of two well-assessed synthetic procedures, namely, hot injection (HI) and ligand-assisted reprecipitation (LARP) in non-polar solvents, using PbBr2 and Cs2CO3 as precursors in the presence of already widely investigated ligands. The overall goal is to study and compare the properties of the NPs to understand how each synthetic method influences the NPs' size and/or the optical properties. Reaction composition and conditions are purposely tuned towards the production of nanocubes with narrow size distribution, high emission properties, and the highest achievable concentration. As a result, the formation of bulk crystals as precipitate in LARP limits the achievement of a highly concentrated NP solution. The size of the NPs obtained by LARP seems to be poorly affected by the ligands' nature and the excess bromide, as consequence of bromide-rich solvation agents, effectively results in NPs with excellent emission properties. In contrast, NPs synthesized by HI exhibit high reaction yield, diffusion growth-controlled size, and less striking emission properties, probably ascribed to a bromide-deficient condition.

Fostering the Dense Packing of Halide Perovskite Quantum Dots through Binary-Disperse Mixing

Due to their versatile applications, perovskite quantum dot (PQD)-based optoelectrical devices have garnered significant research attention. However, the fundamental packing behavior of PQDs in thin films and its impact on the device performance remain relatively unexplored. Drawing inspiration from theoretical models concerning packing density with size mixtures, this study presents an effective strategy, namely, binary-disperse mixing, aimed at enhancing the packing density of PQD films. Comprehensive grazing-incidence small-angle X-ray characterization suggested that the PQD film consists of three phases: two monosize phases and one binary mixing phase. The volume fraction and population of the binary-size phase can be tuned by mixing an appropriate amount of large and small PQDs. Furthermore, we performed multi-length-scale all-atom and coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations to elucidate the distribution and conformation of organic surface ligands, highlighting their influence on PQD packing. Notably, the mixing of two PQDs of different sizes promotes closer face-to-face contact. The densely packed binary-disperse film exhibited largely suppressed trap-assisted recombination, much longer carrier lifetime, and thereby improved power conversion efficiency. Hence, this study provides fundamental understanding of the packing mechanism of perovskite quantum dots and highlights the significance of packing density for PQD-based solar cells.

Mixed Ligand Passivation as the Origin of Near-Unity Emission Quantum Yields in CsPbBr3 Nanocrystals

Key features of syntheses, involving the quaternary ammonium passivation of CsPbBr₃ nanocrystals (NCs), include stable, reproducible, and large (often near-unity) emission quantum yields (QYs). The archetypical example involves didodecyl dimethyl ammonium (DDDMA⁺)-passivated CsPbBr₃ NCs where robust QYs stem from interactions between DDDMA⁺ and NC surfaces. Despite widespread adoption of this synthesis, specific ligand-NC surface interactions responsible for large DDDMA⁺-passivated NC QYs have not been fully established. Multidimensional nuclear magnetic resonance experiments now reveal a new DDDMA⁺-NC surface interaction, beyond established "tightly bound" DDDMA⁺ interactions, which strongly affects observed emission QYs. Depending upon the existence of this new DDDMA⁺ coordination, NC QYs vary broadly between 60 and 85%. More importantly, these measurements reveal surface passivation through unexpected didodecyl ammonium (DDA⁺) that works in concert with DDDMA⁺ to produce near-unity (i.e., >90%) QYs.

Strongly Confined CsPbBr3 Quantum Dots as Quantum Emitters and Building Blocks for Rhombic Superlattices

The success of the colloidal semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) field is rooted in the precise synthetic control of QD size, shape, and composition, enabling electronically well-defined functional nanomaterials that foster fundamental science and motivate diverse fields of applications. While the exploitation of the strong confinement regime has been driving commercial and scientific interest in InP or CdSe QDs, such a regime has still not been thoroughly explored and exploited for lead-halide perovskite QDs, mainly due to a so far insufficient chemical stability and size monodispersity of perovskite QDs smaller than about 7 nm. Here, we demonstrate chemically stable strongly confined 5 nm CsPbBr₃ colloidal QDs via a postsynthetic treatment employing didodecyldimethylammonium bromide ligands. The achieved high size monodispersity (7.5% ± 2.0%) and shape-uniformity enables the self-assembly of QD superlattices with exceptional long-range order, uniform thickness, an unusual rhombic packing with an obtuse angle of 104°, and narrow-band cyan emission. The enhanced chemical stability indicates the promise of strongly confined perovskite QDs for solution-processed single-photon sources, with single QDs showcasing a high single-photon purity of 73% and minimal blinking (78% "on" fraction), both at room temperature.

In Situ Formation of Zwitterionic Ligands: Changing the Passivation Paradigms of CsPbBr3 Nanocrystals

CsPbBr3 nanocrystals (NCs) passivated by conventional lipophilic capping ligands suffer from colloidal and optical instability under ambient conditions, commonly due to the surface rearrangements induced by the polar solvents used for the NC purification steps. To avoid onerous postsynthetic approaches, ascertained as the only viable stability-improvement strategy, the surface passivation paradigms of as-prepared CsPbBr3 NCs should be revisited. In this work, the addition of an extra halide source (8-bromooctanoic acid) to the typical CsPbBr3 synthesis precursors and surfactants leads to the in situ formation of a zwitterionic ligand already before cesium injection. As a result, CsPbBr3 NCs become insoluble in nonpolar hexane, with which they can be washed and purified, and form stable colloidal solutions in a relatively polar medium (dichloromethane), even when longly exposed to ambient conditions. The improved NC stability stems from the effective bidentate adsorption of the zwitterionic ligand on the perovskite surfaces, as supported by theoretical investigations. Furthermore, the bidentate functionalization of the zwitterionic ligand enables the obtainment of blue-emitting perovskite NCs with high PLQYs by UV-irradiation in dichloromethane, functioning as the photoinduced chlorine source.

Direct Patterning of CsPbBr3 Nanocrystals via Electron-Beam Lithography

Lead-halide perovskite (LHP) nanocrystals have proven themselves as an interesting material platform due to their easy synthesis and compositional versatility, allowing for a tunable band gap, strong absorption, and high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY). This tunability and performance make LHP nanocrystals interesting for optoelectronic applications. Patterning active materials like these is a useful way to expand their tunability and applicability as it may allow more intricate designs that can improve efficiencies or increase functionality. Based on a technique for II-VI quantum dots, here we pattern colloidal LHP nanocrystals using electron-beam lithography (EBL). We create patterns of LHP nanocrystals on the order of 100s of nanometers to several microns and use these patterns to form intricate designs. The patterning mechanism is induced by ligand cross-linking, which binds adjacent nanocrystals together. We find that the luminescent properties are somewhat diminished after exposure, but that the structures are nonetheless still emissive. We believe that this is an interesting step toward patterning LHP nanocrystals at the nanoscale for device fabrication.

Impact of Molecular Ligands in the Synthesis and Transformation between Metal Halide Perovskite Quantum Dots and Magic Sized Clusters

Metal halide perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) and perovskite magic sized clusters (PMSCs) exhibit interesting size- and composition-dependent optoelectronic properties that are promising for emerging applications including photovoltaic solar cells and light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Much work has focused on developing new synthesis strategies to improve their structural stability and property tunability. In this paper, we review recent progress in the synthesis and characterization of PQDs and PMSCs, with a focus on the impact of different molecular ligands on their surface passivation and interconversion. Moreover, the effect of capping ligands on ion exchange during synthesis and doping is discussed. Finally, we present some perspectives on challenges and opportunities in fundamental studies and potential applications of both PQDs and PMSCs.

All-inorganic perovskite quantum dots-based electrospun polyacrylonitrile fiber for ultra-sensitive trace-recording

All-inorganic dual-phase CsPbBr₃-Cs₄PbBr₆quantum dots (CPB QDs)-based polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fiber synthesized by supersaturated recrystallization and electrospinning technique possesses characteristics of homogeneous morphology, high crystallinity and solution sensitivity. Under 365 nm laser excitation, CPB@PAN fiber exhibits surprising trace-recording capability attributing to the splash-enhanced fluorescence (FL) performance with a narrow-band emission at 477-515 nm. In the process of ethanol anhydrous (EA) and water splashing, the CPB@PAN fiber presents conspicuous blue and green emission when contacting with EA and water, and maintains intense blue and green FL for more than 4 months. These experimental and theoretical findings provide a facile technology for the development of biological protection display, biotic detection and moisture-proof forewarning based on the trace-recording performance of CPB@PAN fiber.

Polysalt ligands achieve higher quantum yield and improved colloidal stability for CsPbBr3 quantum dots

Colloidal lead halide perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) are relatively new semiconductor nanocrystals with great potential for use in optoelectronic applications. They also present a set of new scientifically challenging fundamental problems to investigate and understand. One of them is to address the rather poor colloidal and structural stability of these materials under solution phase processing and/or transfer between solvents. In this contribution, we detail the synthesis of a new family of multi-coordinating, bromide-based polysalt ligands and test their ability to stabilize CsPbBr₃ nanocrystals in polar solutions. The ligands present multiple salt groups involving quaternary cations, namely ammonium and imidazolium as anchors for coordination onto PQD surfaces, along with several alkyl chains with varying chain length to promote solubilization in various conditions. The ligands provide a few key benefits including the ability to repair damaged surface sites, allow rapid ligand exchange and phase transfer, and preserve the crystalline structure and morphology of the nanocrystals. The polysalt-coated PQDs exhibit near unity PLQY and significantly enhanced colloidal stability in ethanol and methanol.
