Self-Poled Piezoelectric Nanocomposite Fiber Sensors for Wireless Monitoring of Physiological Signals

Self-powered sensors have the potential to enable real-time health monitoring without contributing to the ever-growing demand for energy. Piezoelectric nanogenerators (PENGs) respond to mechanical deformations to produce electrical signals, imparting a sensing capability without external power sources. Textiles conform to the human body and serve as an interactive biomechanical energy harvesting and sensing medium without compromising comfort. However, the textile-based PENG fabrication process is complex and lacks scalability, making these devices impractical for mass production. Here, we demonstrate the fabrication of a long-length PENG fiber compatible with industrial-scale manufacturing. The thermal drawing process enables the one-step fabrication of self-poled MoS2-poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) nanocomposite fiber devices integrated with electrodes. Heat and stress during thermal drawing and MoS2 nanoparticle addition facilitate interfacial polarization and dielectric modulation to enhance the output performance. The fibers show a 57 and 70% increase in the output voltage and current compared to the pristine PVDF fiber, respectively, at a considerably low MoS2 loading of 3 wt %. The low Young's modulus of the outer cladding ensures an effective stress transfer to the piezocomposite domain and allows minute motion detection. The flexible fibers demonstrate wireless, self-powered physiological sensing and biomotion analysis capability. The study aims to guide the large-scale production of highly sensitive integrated fibers to enable textile-based and plug-and-play wearable sensors.

Standalone Stretchable Biophysical Sensing System Based on Laser Direct Write of Patterned Porous Graphene/Co3O4 Nanocomposites

Skin-interfaced wearable sensors can continuously monitor various biophysical and biochemical signals for health monitoring and disease diagnostics. However, such devices are typically limited by unsatisfactory and unstable output performance of the power supplies under mechanical deformations and human movements. Furthermore, there is also a lack of a simple and cost-effective fabrication technique to fabricate and integrate varying materials in the device system. Herein, we report a fully integrated standalone stretchable biophysical sensing system by combining wearable biophysical sensors, triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG), microsupercapacitor arrays (MSCAs), power management circuits, and wireless transmission modules. All of the device components and interconnections based on the three-dimensional (3D) networked graphene/Co3O4 nanocomposites are fabricated via low-cost and scalable direct laser writing. The self-charging power units can efficiently harvest energy from body motion into a stable and adjustable voltage/current output to drive various biophysical sensors and wireless transmission modules for continuously capturing, processing, and wirelessly transmitting various signals in real-time. The novel material modification, device configuration, and system integration strategies provide a rapid and scalable route to the design and application of next-generation standalone stretchable sensing systems for health monitoring and human-machine interfaces.

Water-Based Continuous Fabrication of Highly Elastic Electromagnetic Fibers

Elastic electromagnetic fibers are promising building blocks for next-generation flexible electronics. However, fabrication of elastic fibers is still difficult and usually requires organic solvents or high temperatures, restricting their widespread applications. Furthermore, the continuous production of electromagnetic fibers has not been realized previously. In this study, we propose an ionic chelation strategy to continuously produce electromagnetic fibers with a magnetic liquid metal (MLM) as the core and elastic polyurethane as the sheath in water at room temperature. Sodium alginate (SA) has been introduced to rapidly chelate with calcium ions (Ca2+) in a coagulation bath to support the continuous spinning of waterborne polyurethane (WPU) as a sheath. Meanwhile, WPU-encapsulated MLM microparticles efficiently suppress the fluid instability of MLM for continuous extrusion as the core. The resultant fiber exhibits excellent mechanical performances (tensile strength and toughness up to 32 MPa and 124 MJ/m3, respectively), high conductive stability in large deformations (high conductivity of 7.6 × 104 S/m at 580% strain), and magnetoactive properties. The applications of this electromagnetic fiber have been demonstrated by conductance-stable wires, sensors, actuation, and electromagnetic interference shielding. This work offers a water-based molecular principle for efficient and green fabrication of multifunctional fibers and will inspire a series of applications.

In situ synergistic reduced graphene oxide-boron carbon nitride nanosheet heterostructures for high-performance fabric-based supercapacitors

We develop a new type of heterostructure nanocomposite made of reduced graphene oxide-boron carbon nitride nanosheets (rGO-BCN) by B-C covalent bonds. The rGO-BCN nanocomposite delivers a large specific surface and excellent electrochemical properties, and is then constructed into flexible fabric-based high-performance supercapacitor electrodes based on the microfluidic electrospinning technology.

Hydrophilic 1T-WS2 Nanosheet Arrays toward Conductive Textiles for High-Efficient and Continuous Hydroelectric Generation and Storage

Flexible hydroelectric generators (HEGs) are promising self-powered devices that spontaneously derive electrical power from moisture. However, achieving the desired compatibility between a continuous operating voltage and superior current density remains a significant challenge. Herein, a textile-based van der Waals heterostructure is rationally designed between conductive 1T phase tungsten disulfide@carbonized silk (1T-WS2@CSilk) and carbon black@cotton (CB@Cotton) fabrics with an asymmetric distribution of oxygen-containing functional groups, which enhances the proton concentration gradients toward high-performance wearable HEGs. The vertically staggered 1T-WS2 nanosheet arrays on the CSilk fabric provide abundant hydrophilic nanochannels for rapid carrier transport. Furthermore, the moisture-induced primary battery formed between the active aluminum (Al) electrode and the conductive textiles introduces the desired electric field to facilitate charge separation and compensate for the decreased streaming potential. These devices exhibit a power density of 21.6 µW cm-2, an open-circuit voltage (Voc) of 0.65 V sustained for over 10 000 s, and a current density of 0.17 mA cm-2. This performance makes them capable of supplying power to commercial electronics and human respiratory monitoring. This study presents a promising strategy for the refined design of wearable electronics.

A mechanically robust spiral fiber with ionic-electronic coupling for multimodal energy harvesting

Wearable electronics are some of the most promising technologies with the potential to transform many aspects of human life such as smart healthcare and intelligent communication. The design of self-powered fabrics with the ability to efficiently harvest energy from the ambient environment would not only be beneficial for their integration with textiles, but would also reduce the environmental impact of wearable technologies by eliminating their need for disposable batteries. Herein, inspired by classical Archimedean spirals, we report a metastructured fiber fabricated by scrolling followed by cold drawing of a bilayer thin film of an MXene and a solid polymer electrolyte. The obtained composite fibers with a typical spiral metastructure (SMFs) exhibit high efficiency for dispersing external stress, resulting in simultaneously high specific mechanical strength and toughness. Furthermore, the alternating layers of the MXene and polymer electrolyte form a unique, tandem ionic-electronic coupling device, enabling SMFs to generate electricity from diverse environmental parameters, such as mechanical vibrations, moisture gradients, and temperature differences. This work presents a design rule for assembling planar architectures into robust fibrous metastructures, and introduces the concept of ionic-electronic coupling fibers for efficient multimodal energy harvesting, which have great potential in the field of self-powered wearable electronics.

Architectural design and affecting factors of MXene-based textronics for real-world application

Today, textile-based wearable electronic devices (textronics) have been developed by taking advantage of nanotechnology and textile substrates. Textile substrates offer flexibility, air permeability, breathability, and wearability, whereas, using nanomaterials offers numerous functional properties, like electrical conductivity, hydrophobicity, touch sensitivity, self-healing properties, joule heating properties, and many more. For these reasons, textronics have been extensively used in many applications. Recently, new emerging two-dimensional (2D) transition metal carbide and nitride, known as MXene, nanomaterials have been highly considered for developing textronics because the surface functional groups and hydrophilicity of MXene nanoflakes allow the facile fabrication of MXene-based textronics. In addition, MXene nanosheets possess excellent electroconductivity and mechanical properties as well as large surface area, which also give numerous opportunities to develop novel functional MXene/textile-based wearable electronic devices. Therefore, this review summarizes the recent advancements in the architectural design of MXene-based textronics, like fiber, yarn, and fabric. Regarding the fabrication of MXene/textile composites, numerous factors affect the functional properties (e.g. fabric structure, MXene size, etc.). All the crucial affecting parameters, which should be chosen carefully during the fabrication process, are critically discussed here. Next, the recent applications of MXene-based textronics in supercapacitors, thermotherapy, and sensors are elaborately delineated. Finally, the existing challenges and future scopes associated with the development of MXene-based textronics are presented.

Self-Powering Gas Sensing System Enabled by Double-Layer Triboelectric Nanogenerators Based on Poly(2-vinylpyridine)@BaTiO3 Core-Shell Hybrids with Superior Dispersibility and Uniformity

Current core-shell hybrids used in diverse energy-related applications possess limited dispersibility and film uniformity that govern their overall performances. Herein, we showcase superdispersible core-shell hybrids (P2VP@BaTiO3) composed of a poly(2-vinylpyridine) (P2VP) (5-20 wt %) and a barium titanate oxide (BaTiO3), maximizing dielectric constants by forming the high-quality uniform films. The P2VP@BaTiO3-based triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs), especially the 10 wt % P2VP (P2VP10@BaTiO3)-based one, deliver significantly enhanced output performances compared to physically mixed P2VP/BaTiO3 counterparts. The P2VP10@BaTiO3-based double-layer TENG exhibits not only an excellent transferred charge density of 281.7 μC m-2 with a power density of 27.2 W m-2 but also extraordinary device stability (∼100% sustainability of the maximum output voltage for 54,000 cycles and ∼68.7% voltage retention even at 99% humidity). Notably, introducing the MoS2/SiO2/Ni-mesh layer into this double-layer TENG enables ultrahigh charge density of up to 1228 μC m-2, which is the top value reported for the TENGs so far. Furthermore, we also demonstrate a near-field communication-based sensing system for monitoring CO2 gas using our developed self-powered generator with enhanced output performance and robustness.

Rheological Properties and Inkjet Printability of a Green Silver-Based Conductive Ink for Wearable Flexible Textile Antennas

The development of e-textiles necessitates the creation of highly conductive inks that are compatible with precise inkjet printing, which remains a key challenge. This work presents an innovative, syringe-based method to optimize a novel bio-sourced silver ink for inkjet printing on textiles. We investigate the relationships between inks' composition, rheological properties, and printing behavior, ultimately assessing the electrical performance of the fabricated circuits. Using Na-alginate and polyethylene glycol (PEG) as the suspension matrix, we demonstrate their viscosity depends on the component ratios. Rheological control of the silver nanoparticle-laden ink has become paramount for uniform printing on textiles. A specific formulation (3 wt.% AgNPs, 20 wt.% Na-alginate, 40 wt.% PEG, and 40 wt.% solvent) exhibits the optimal rheology, enabling the printing of 0.1 mm thick conductive lines with a low resistivity (8 × 10-3 Ω/cm). Our findings pave the way for designing eco-friendly ink formulations that are suitable for inkjet printing flexible antennas and other electronic circuits onto textiles, opening up exciting possibilities for the next generation of E-textiles.

Organic-inorganic hybrid ZIF-8/MXene/cellulose-based textiles with improved antibacterial and electromagnetic interference shielding performance

Despite the tremendous efforts on developing antibacterial wearable textile materials containing Ti3C2Tx MXene, the singular antimicrobial mechanism, poor antibacterial durability, and oxidation susceptibility of MXene limits their applications. In this context, flexible multifunctional cellulosic textiles were prepared via layer-by-layer assembly of MXene and the in-situ synthesis of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8). Specifically, the introduction of highly conductive MXene enhanced the interface interactions between the ZIF-8 layer and cellulose fibers, endowing the green-based materials with outstanding synergistic photothermal/photodynamic therapy (PTT/PDT) activity and adjustable electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding performance. In-situ polymerization formed a MXene/ZIF-8 bilayer structure, promoting the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) while protecting MXene from oxidation. The as-prepared smart textile exhibited excellent bactericidal efficacy of >99.99 % against both Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) after 5 min of NIR (300 mW cm-2) irradiation which is below the maximum permissible exposure (MPE) limit. The sustained released Zn2+ from the ZIF-8 layer achieved a bactericidal efficiency of over 99.99 % within 48 h without NIR light. Furthermore, this smart textile also demonstrated remarkable EMI shielding efficiency (47.7 dB). Clearly, this study provides an elaborate strategy for designing and constructing multifunctional cellulose-based materials for a variety of applications.

A review of cellulose-based catechol-containing functional materials for advanced applications

With the increment in global energy consumption and severe environmental pollution, it is urgently needed to explore green and sustainable materials. Inspired by nature, catechol groups in mussel adhesion proteins have been successively understood and utilized as novel biomimetic materials. In parallel, cellulose presents a wide class of functional materials rating from macro-scale to nano-scale components. The cross-over among both research fields alters the introduction of impressive materials with potential engineering properties, where catechol-containing materials supply a general stage for the functionalization of cellulose or cellulose derivatives. In this review, the role of catechol groups in the modification of cellulose and cellulose derivatives is discussed. A broad variety of advanced applications of cellulose-based catechol-containing materials, including adhesives, hydrogels, aerogels, membranes, textiles, pulp and papermaking, composites, are presented. Furthermore, some critical remaining challenges and opportunities are studied to mount the way toward the rational purpose and applications of cellulose-based catechol-containing materials.

Wearable All-Fabric Hybrid Energy Harvester to Simultaneously Harvest Radiofrequency and Triboelectric Energy

Distributed micro-energy harvesting devices offer the flexibility, sustainability, and multi-scenario applicability that will be critical to wearable electronic products in the Internet of Things. The radiofrequency and triboelectric (RF-TE) hybrid energy harvester (HEH) concept and prototype is presented for the first time, to simultaneously capture the energy from ambient electromagnetic waves and biological motions. The proposed hybrid energy harvesting system consists of a wearable rectenna, a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG), and a power management circuit (PMC). Among them, the all-fabric rectenna exhibits good impedance matching characteristics in the ISM frequency. The flexible TENG unit can generate a maximum power density of 0.024 µW cm-2. The designed multifunctional fabric-based PMC can considerably enhance the controllability of harvested hybrid energy. Additionally, a normalizable fabric circuit board quasi surface mount technology (FCB-SMT) is proposed to integrate all modules on the same fabric substrate in one step, making the entire system superior mechanical robustness. The proposed wearable fabric-based RF-TE hybrid energy harvester is capable of successfully driving consumer electronics (such as sensors, watches, etc.). It provides a new energy solution strategy for self-powered wearable electronic devices and is anticipated to encourage the efficient utilization of renewable energy.

Enhancing the Humidity Resistance of Triboelectric Nanogenerators: A Review

Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) are sustainable energy resources for powering electronic devices from miniature to large-scale applications. However, their output performance and stability can deteriorate significantly when TENGs are exposed to moisture or humidity caused by the ambient environment or human physiological activities. This review provides an overview of the recent research advancements in enhancing the humidity resistance of TENGs. Various approaches have been reviewed including encapsulation techniques, surface modification of triboelectric materials to augment hydrophobicity or superhydrophobicity, the creation of fibrous architectures for effective moisture dissipation, leveraging water assistance for TENG performance enhancement, and other strategies like charge excitation. These research efforts contribute to the improvement of environmental adaptability and lead to expanded practical TENG applications both as energy harvesters and self-powered sensors. The efficacy of these strategies and future challenges are also discussed to facilitate the continued development of resilient TENGs in high humidity environments.

Advanced Dielectric Materials for Triboelectric Nanogenerators: Principles, Methods, and Applications

Triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) manifests distinct advantages such as multiple structural selectivity, diverse selection of materials, environmental adaptability, low cost, and remarkable conversion efficiency, which becomes a promising technology for micro-nano energy harvesting and self-powered sensing. Tribo-dielectric materials are the fundamental and core components for high-performance TENGs. In particular, the charge generation, dissipation, storage, migration of the dielectrics, and dynamic equilibrium behaviors determine the overall performance. Herein, a comprehensive summary is presented to elucidate the dielectric charge transport mechanism and tribo-dielectric material modification principle toward high-performance TENGs. The contact electrification and charge transport mechanism of dielectric materials is started first, followed by introducing the basic principle and dielectric materials of TENGs. Subsequently, modification mechanisms and strategies for high-performance tribo-dielectric materials are highlighted regarding physical/chemical, surface/bulk, dielectric coupling, and structure optimization. Furthermore, representative applications of dielectric materials based TENGs as power sources, self-powered sensors are demonstrated. The existing challenges and promising potential opportunities for advanced tribo-dielectric materials are outlined, guiding the design, fabrication, and applications of tribo-dielectric materials.

Advanced Cooling Textiles: Mechanisms, Applications, and Perspectives

High-temperature environments pose significant risks to human health and safety. The body's natural ability to regulate temperature becomes overwhelmed under extreme heat, leading to heat stroke, dehydration, and even death. Therefore, the development of effective personal thermal-moisture management systems is crucial for maintaining human well-being. In recent years, significant advancements have been witnessed in the field of textile-based cooling systems, which utilize innovative materials and strategies to achieve effective cooling under different environments. This review aims to provide an overview of the current progress in textile-based personal cooling systems, mainly focusing on the classification, mechanisms, and fabrication techniques. Furthermore, the challenges and potential application scenarios are highlighted, providing valuable insights for further advancements and the eventual industrialization of personal cooling textiles.

Porous Conductive Textiles for Wearable Electronics

Over the years, researchers have made significant strides in the development of novel flexible/stretchable and conductive materials, enabling the creation of cutting-edge electronic devices for wearable applications. Among these, porous conductive textiles (PCTs) have emerged as an ideal material platform for wearable electronics, owing to their light weight, flexibility, permeability, and wearing comfort. This Review aims to present a comprehensive overview of the progress and state of the art of utilizing PCTs for the design and fabrication of a wide variety of wearable electronic devices and their integrated wearable systems. To begin with, we elucidate how PCTs revolutionize the form factors of wearable electronics. We then discuss the preparation strategies of PCTs, in terms of the raw materials, fabrication processes, and key properties. Afterward, we provide detailed illustrations of how PCTs are used as basic building blocks to design and fabricate a wide variety of intrinsically flexible or stretchable devices, including sensors, actuators, therapeutic devices, energy-harvesting and storage devices, and displays. We further describe the techniques and strategies for wearable electronic systems either by hybridizing conventional off-the-shelf rigid electronic components with PCTs or by integrating multiple fibrous devices made of PCTs. Subsequently, we highlight some important wearable application scenarios in healthcare, sports and training, converging technologies, and professional specialists. At the end of the Review, we discuss the challenges and perspectives on future research directions and give overall conclusions. As the demand for more personalized and interconnected devices continues to grow, PCT-based wearables hold immense potential to redefine the landscape of wearable technology and reshape the way we live, work, and play.

Enzymatic biofuel cell: A potential power source for self-sustained smart textiles

Self-sustained smart textiles require a miniaturized and flexible power source, while the state-of-the-art lithium-ion battery cannot be seamlessly integrated into smart textiles. Enzymatic biofuel cells (EBFC), utilizing physiological glucose or lactate as fuels to convert chemical energy into electricity, are a potential alternative power source. In comparison to other proposed energy harvesters relying on solar and biomechanical energy, EBFCs feature several key properties, including continuous power generation, biocompatible interfaces without using toxic elements, simple configuration without extra packaging, and biodegradability. There is an urgent need to introduce EBFCs to the researchers working on smart textiles, who typically are not expert on bioelectrochemistry. This minireview first introduces the working principle of EBFC and then summarizes its recent progress on fibers, yarns, and textiles. It's expected that this review can help to bridge the knowledge gap and provide the community of smart textiles with information on both the strengths and limitations of EBFCs.

Electrochemical sensing fibers for wearable health monitoring devices

Real-time monitoring of health conditions is an emerging strong issue in health care, internet information, and other strongly evolving areas. Wearable electronics are versatile platforms for non-invasive sensing. Among a variety of wearable device principles, fiber electronics represent cutting-edge development of flexible electronics. Enabled by electrochemical sensing, fiber electronics have found a wide range of applications, providing new opportunities for real-time monitoring of health conditions by daily wearing, and electrochemical fiber sensors as explored in the present report are a promising emerging field. In consideration of the key challenges and corresponding solutions for electrochemical sensing fibers, we offer here a timely and comprehensive review. We discuss the principles and advantages of electrochemical sensing fibers and fabrics. Our review also highlights the importance of electrochemical sensing fibers in the fabrication of "smart" fabric designs, focusing on strategies to address key issues in fiber-based electrochemical sensors, and we provide an overview of smart clothing systems and their cutting-edge applications in therapeutic care. Our report offers a comprehensive overview of current developments in electrochemical sensing fibers to researchers in the fields of wearables, flexible electronics, and electrochemical sensing, stimulating forthcoming development of next-generation "smart" fabrics-based electrochemical sensing.

Advances in Smart Photovoltaic Textiles

Energy harvesting textiles have emerged as a promising solution to sustainably power wearable electronics. Textile-based solar cells (SCs) interconnected with on-body electronics have emerged to meet such needs. These technologies are lightweight, flexible, and easy to transport while leveraging the abundant natural sunlight in an eco-friendly way. In this Review, we comprehensively explore the working mechanisms, diverse types, and advanced fabrication strategies of photovoltaic textiles. Furthermore, we provide a detailed analysis of the recent progress made in various types of photovoltaic textiles, emphasizing their electrochemical performance. The focal point of this review centers on smart photovoltaic textiles for wearable electronic applications. Finally, we offer insights and perspectives on potential solutions to overcome the existing limitations of textile-based photovoltaics to promote their industrial commercialization.

Advances in Printed Electronic Textiles

Electronic textiles (e-textiles) have emerged as a revolutionary solution for personalized healthcare, enabling the continuous collection and communication of diverse physiological parameters when seamlessly integrated with the human body. Among various methods employed to create wearable e-textiles, printing offers unparalleled flexibility and comfort, seamlessly integrating wearables into garments. This has spurred growing research interest in printed e-textiles, due to their vast design versatility, material options, fabrication techniques, and wide-ranging applications. Here, a comprehensive overview of the crucial considerations in fabricating printed e-textiles is provided, encompassing the selection of conductive materials and substrates, as well as the essential pre- and post-treatments involved. Furthermore, the diverse printing techniques and the specific requirements are discussed, highlighting the advantages and limitations of each method. Additionally, the multitude of wearable applications made possible by printed e-textiles is explored, such as their integration as various sensors, supercapacitors, and heated garments. Finally, a forward-looking perspective is provided, discussing future prospects and emerging trends in the realm of printed wearable e-textiles. As advancements in materials science, printing technologies, and design innovation continue to unfold, the transformative potential of printed e-textiles in healthcare and beyond is poised to revolutionize the way wearable technology interacts and benefits.

High-Performance and Ecofriendly Organic Thermoelectrics Enabled by N-Type Polythiophene Derivatives with Doping-Induced Molecular Order

The ability of n-type polymer thermoelectric materials to tolerate high doping loading limits further development of n-type polymer conductivity. Herein, two alcohol-soluble n-type polythiophene derivatives that are n-PT3 and n-PT4 are reported. Due to the ability of two polymers to tolerate doping loading more significantly than 100 mol%, both achieve electrical conductivity >100 S cm-1 . Moreover, the conductivity of both polythiophenes remains almost constant at high doping concentrations with excellent doping tunability, which may be related to their ability to overcome charging-induced backbone torsion and morphology change caused by saturated doping. The characterizations reveal that n-PT4 has a high doping level and carrier concentration (>3.10 × 1020  cm-3 ), and the carrier concentration continues to increase as the doping concentration increases. In addition, doping leads to improved crystal structure of n-PT4, and the crystallinity does not decrease significantly with increasing doping concentration; even the carrier mobility increases with it. The synergistic effect of these two leads to both n-PT3 and n-PT4 achieving a breakthrough of 100 in conductivity and power factor. The DMlmC-doped n-PT4 achieves a power factor of over 150 µW m-1  K-2 . These values are among the highest for n-type organic thermoelectric materials.

Electrospun cellulose nanofibers immobilized with anthocyanin extract for colorimetric determination of bacteria

A novel smart biochromic textile sensor was developed by immobilizing anthocyanin extract into electrospun cellulose acetate nanofibers to detect bacteria for numerous potential uses, such as healthcare monitoring. Red-cabbage was employed to extract anthocyanin, which was then applied to cellulose acetate nanofibers treated with potassium aluminum sulfate as a mordant. Thus, nanoparticles (NPs) of mordant/anthocyanin (65-115 nm) were generated in situ on the surface of cellulose acetate nanofibrous film. The pH of a growing bacterial culture medium is known to change when bacteria multiply. The absorbance spectra revealed a bluish shift from 595 nm (purple) to 448 nm (green) during the growth of Gram-negative bacteria (E. coli) owing to the discharge of total volatile basic amines as secretion metabolites. On the other hand, the absorption spectra of a growing bacterial culture containing Gram-positive bacteria (L. acidophilus) showed a blue shift from 595 nm (purplish) to 478 nm (pink) as a result of releasing lactic acid as a secretion metabolite. Both absorbance spectra and CIE Lab parameters were used to determine the color shifts. Various analytical techniques were utilized to study the morphology of the anthocyanin-encapsulated electrospun cellulose nanofibers. The cytotoxic effects of the colored cellulose acetate nanofibers were tested.

Flexible Metasurfaces for Multifunctional Interfaces

Optical metasurfaces, capable of manipulating the properties of light with a thickness at the subwavelength scale, have been the subject of extensive investigation in recent decades. This research has been mainly driven by their potential to overcome the limitations of traditional, bulky optical devices. However, most existing optical metasurfaces are confined to planar and rigid designs, functions, and technologies, which greatly impede their evolution toward practical applications that often involve complex surfaces. The disconnect between two-dimensional (2D) planar structures and three-dimensional (3D) curved surfaces is becoming increasingly pronounced. In the past two decades, the emergence of flexible electronics has ushered in an emerging era for metasurfaces. This review delves into this cutting-edge field, with a focus on both flexible and conformal design and fabrication techniques. Initially, we reflect on the milestones and trajectories in modern research of optical metasurfaces, complemented by a brief overview of their theoretical underpinnings and primary classifications. We then showcase four advanced applications of optical metasurfaces, emphasizing their promising prospects and relevance in areas such as imaging, biosensing, cloaking, and multifunctionality. Subsequently, we explore three key trends in optical metasurfaces, including mechanically reconfigurable metasurfaces, digitally controlled metasurfaces, and conformal metasurfaces. Finally, we summarize our insights on the ongoing challenges and opportunities in this field.

Self-encapsulated ionic fibers based on stress-induced adaptive phase transition for non-contact depth-of-field camouflage sensing

Ionically conductive fibers have promising applications; however, complex processing techniques and poor stability limit their practicality. To overcome these challenges, we proposed a stress-induced adaptive phase transition strategy to conveniently fabricate self-encapsulated hydrogel-based ionically conductive fibers (se-HICFs). se-HICFs can be produced simply by directly stretching ionic hydrogels with ultra-stretchable networks (us-IHs) or by dip-drawing from molten us-IHs. During this process, stress facilitated the directional migration and evaporation of water molecules in us-IHs, causing a phase transition in the surface layer of ionic fibers to achieve self-encapsulation. The resulting sheath-core structure of se-HICFs enhanced mechanical strength and stability while endowing se-HICFs with powerful non-contact electrostatic induction capabilities. Mimicking nature, se-HICFs were woven into spider web structures and camouflaged in wild environments to achieve high spatiotemporal resolution 3D depth-of-field sensing for different moving media. This work opens up a convenient route to fabricate stable functionalized ionic fibers.

Improvement strategies for oil/water separation based on electrospun SiO2 nanofibers

Oil spills and oily effluents from industry and daily life pose a great threat to all organisms in the ecosystem, while aggravating the problem of water scarcity, which has developed into a global challenge. Therefore, the development of advanced materials and technologies for oil/water separation has become a focus of attention. One-dimensional (1D) SiO2 nanofibers (SNFs) have become one of the most widely used inorganic nanomaterials in the past due to their stable chemical properties, excellent biocompatibility, and high temperature resistance etc. Meanwhile, electrospinning technique, as an emerging technology for treating oil/water emulsions, electrospun SNFs on this basis also has a number of advantages such as adjustable wettability, diverse structure and good connectivity. This review provides a systematic overview of the research progress of electrospun SNFs in different aspects. In this review, we first introduce the basic principles of electrospun SNFs, then focus on the design structures of various SNFs, propose corresponding strategies for the property improvement of SNFs, also analyze and consider the applications of SNFs. Finally, the challenges faced by electrospun SNFs in the field of oil/water separation are analyzed, and the future directions of electrospun SNFs are summarized and prospected.

Hyperstable Eutectic Core-Spun Fiber Enabled Wearable Energy Harvesting and Personal Thermal Management Fabric

Electronic textiles have gradually evolved into one of the most important mainstays of flexible electronics owing to their good wearability. However, textile multifunctionality is generally achieved by stacking functional modules, which is not conducive to wearability. Integrating these modules into a single fiber provides a better solution. In this work, a core-spun functional fiber (CSF) constructed from hyper-environmentally stable Zn-based eutectogel as the core layer and polytetrafluoroethylene as the sheath is designed. The CSF achieves a synergistic output effect of piezoelectricity-enhanced triboelectricity, as well as reliable hydrophobicity, and high mid-infrared emissivity and visible light reflectivity. A monolayer functionalized integrated textile is woven from the CSF to enable effective energy (mechanical and droplet energy) harvesting and personal thermal management functions. Furthermore, scenarios for the energy supply, motion detection, and outdoor use of electronic fabrics for electronics applications are demonstrated, opening new avenues for the functional integration of electronic textiles.

Recent Progress of Wearable Triboelectric Nanogenerator-Based Sensor for Pulse Wave Monitoring

Today, cardiovascular diseases threaten human health worldwide. In clinical practice, it has been concluded that analyzing the pulse waveform can provide clinically valuable information for the diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases. Accordingly, continuous and accurate monitoring of the pulse wave is essential for the prevention and detection of cardiovascular diseases. Wearable triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) are emerging as a pulse wave monitoring biotechnology due to their compelling characteristics, including being self-powered, light-weight, and wear-resistant, as well as featuring user-friendliness and superior sensitivity. Herein, a comprehensive review is conducted on the progress of wearable TENGs for pulse wave monitoring. Firstly, the four modes of operation of TENG are briefly described. Secondly, TENGs for pulse wave monitoring are classified into two categories, namely wearable flexible film-based TENG sensors and textile-based TENG sensors. Next, the materials, fabrication methods, working mechanisms, and experimental performance of various TENG-based sensors are summarized. It concludes by comparing the characteristics of the two types of TENGs and discussing the potential development and challenges of TENG-based sensors in the diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases and personalized healthcare.

Wear-Resistant Smart Textiles Using Nylon-11 Triboelectric Yarns

The ever-increasing demand for self-powered systems such as glucose biosensors and mixed reality devices has sparked significant interest in triboelectric generators, which hold large potential as renewable energy solutions. Our study explores new methods for integrating energy-harvesting capabilities into smart textiles by developing strong and efficient yarns that can convert mechanical energy into electrical energy through a triboelectric effect. Specifically, we focused on Nylon-11 (PA11), a material known for its crystalline structure well-suited for generating a powerful triboelectric response. To achieve this, we created triboelectric yarns by electrospinning PA11 fibers onto conductive carbon yarns, enabling energy-harvesting applications. Extensive testing demonstrated that these yarns possess exceptional durability, surpassing real-life usage requirements while experiencing minimal degradation. Additionally, we developed a prototype haptic device by interweaving tribopositive PA11 and tribonegative poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) triboelectric yarns. Our research has successfully yielded durable and efficient yarns with strong energy-harvesting capabilities, opening up possibilities for integrating smart textiles into practical scenarios. These technologies are promising steps to achieve greener and more reliable self-powered systems.

Implantable Triboelectric Nanogenerators for Self-Powered Cardiovascular Healthcare

Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have gained significant traction in recent years in the bioengineering community. With the potential for expansive applications for biomedical use, many individuals and research groups have furthered their studies on the topic, in order to gain an understanding of how TENGs can contribute to healthcare. More specifically, there have been a number of recent studies focusing on implantable triboelectric nanogenerators (I-TENGs) toward self-powered cardiac systems healthcare. In this review, the progression of implantable TENGs for self-powered cardiovascular healthcare, including self-powered cardiac monitoring devices, self-powered therapeutic devices, and power sources for cardiac pacemakers, will be systematically reviewed. Long-term expectations of these implantable TENG devices through their biocompatibility and other utilization strategies will also be discussed.

Woven organic crystals

Woven architectures are prepared by physical entanglement of fibrous components to expand one-dimensional material into two-dimensional sheets with enhanced strength and resilience to wear. Here, we capitalize on the elastic properties of long organic crystals with a high aspect ratio to prepare an array of centimeter-size woven network structures. While being robust to mechanical impact, the woven patches are also elastic due to effective stress dissipation by the elasticity of the individual warp and weft crystals. The thermal stability of component crystals translates into favorable thermoelastic properties of the porous woven structures, where the network remains elastic over a range of 300 K. By providing means for physical entanglement of organic crystals, the weaving circumvents the natural limitation of the small size of slender organic crystals that is determined by their natural growth, thereby expanding the prospects for applications of organic crystals from one-dimensional entities to expandable, two-dimensional robust structures.

Highly porous thermoelectric composites with high figure of merit and low thermal conductivity from solution-synthesized porous Bi2Si2Te6 nanosheets

Layer-structured Bi2Si2Te6 has garnered significant attention in the field of thermoelectrics due to its exceptional thermoelectric properties and unique structural characteristics. Enhancing the transport properties of composites by manipulating the thermal and electrical properties of materials through the fabrication of porous nanostructured materials has emerged as a promising strategy. This paper presents a study on enhancing the thermoelectric (TE) properties of Bi2Si2Te6 nanosheets (BST NSs) through nanostructuring and the fabrication of porous BST NSs (p-BST). The process involves Li intercalation and exfoliation to obtain BST NSs, followed by the creation of p-BST composites by introducing nanosized pores onto the surface of the NSs using high-power sonification for various durations. The incorporation of the porous structure effectively increases phonon scattering, leading to a decrease in the lattice thermal conductivity (κl) of the composite. The p-BST(2) composite demonstrates significantly low κ and enhanced thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT) values (∼0.63 W m-1 K-1 and ∼0.083) at room temperature. These results highlight the efficacy of porous structure preparation as a promising strategy for enhancing the thermoelectric performance of chalcogenide-based composites, offering potential solutions to environmental degradation and energy shortages.

Porous Polymer Materials in Triboelectric Nanogenerators: A Review

Since the invention of the triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG), porous polymer materials (PPMs), with different geometries and topologies, have been utilized to enhance the output performance and expand the functionality of TENGs. In this review, the basic characteristics and preparation methods of various PPMs are introduced, along with their applications in TENGs on the basis of their roles as electrodes, triboelectric surfaces, and structural materials. According to the pore size and dimensionality, various types of TENGs that are built with hydrogels, aerogels, foams, and fibrous media are classified and their advantages and disadvantages are analyzed. To deepen the understanding of the future development trend, their intelligent and multifunctional applications in human-machine interfaces, smart wearable devices, and self-powering sensors are introduced. Finally, the future directions and challenges of PPMs in TENGs are explored to provide possible guidance on PPMs in various TENG-based intelligent devices and systems.

Sustainable electronic textiles towards scalable commercialization

Textiles represent a fundamental material format that is extensively integrated into our everyday lives. The quest for more versatile and body-compatible wearable electronics has led to the rise of electronic textiles (e-textiles). By enhancing textiles with electronic functionalities, e-textiles define a new frontier of wearable platforms for human augmentation. To realize the transformational impact of wearable e-textiles, materials innovations can pave the way for effective user adoption and the creation of a sustainable circular economy. We propose a repair, recycle, replacement and reduction circular e-textile paradigm. We envisage a systematic design framework embodying material selection and biofabrication concepts that can unify environmental friendliness, market viability, supply-chain resilience and user experience quality. This framework establishes a set of actionable principles for the industrialization and commercialization of future sustainable e-textile products.

Machine Learning-Enabled Intelligent Gesture Recognition and Communication System Using Printed Strain Sensors

Gesture contains abundant and complicated information in daily life; as a consequence, gesture recognition attracts a wide range of application prospects and academic values as an important way of achieving human-machine interactions (HMIs). Here, we report an intelligent system consisting of a smart glove made by printed CNT-graphene/PDMS strain sensors. The smart glove shows excellent fitness, comfort, and lightness for human hands. Inspired by machine learning strategies, several objects and gestures can be well classified and implemented by a customized artificial neural network. Several data sets of different sign language gestures and object-grabbing gestures were established, and the result shows that the intelligent system can achieve an average accuracy of 97% and up to 99.4% for a number of gesture groups. Moreover, a robot hand is connected to this system, which is able to react to the motion of human hands with certain gestures where simple sign communication is achieved. These features provide a feasible practical application scheme for gesture recognition in HMIs.

Novel Ultralow-Potential Electrochemiluminescence Aptasensor for the Highly Sensitive Detection of Zearalenone Using a Resonance Energy Transfer System

An ultralow-potential electrochemiluminescence (ECL) aptasensor has been designed for zearalenone (ZEN) assay based on a resonance energy transfer (RET) system with SnS2 QDs/g-C3N4 as a novel luminophore and CuO/NH2-UiO-66 as a dual-quencher. SnS2 QDs were loaded onto g-C3N4 nanosheets and enhanced the ECL luminescence via strong synergistic effects under an ultralow potential. The UV-vis absorption spectrum of CuO/NH2-UiO-66 exhibits considerable overlap with the ECL emission spectrum of SnS2 QDs/g-C3N4, an important consideration for the RET process. In order to stimulate RET, the ZEN aptamer and complementary DNA are introduced for conjugation between the donor and the acceptor. With the binding interaction between ZEN by its aptamer, CuO/NH2-UiO-66 is removed from the electrode surface, resulting in the inhibition of the RET system and an increase in the ECL signal. Under optimal conditions, the as-prepared aptasensor quantified ZEN from 0.5 μg·mL-1 to 0.1 fg·mL-1 with a low limit of detection of 0.085 fg·mL-1, and it exhibited good stability, excellent specificity, high reproducibility, and desirable practicality. The sensing strategy provides a method for mycotoxins assay to monitor food safety.

Stretchable Thermoelectric Fibers with Three-Dimensional Interconnected Porous Network for Low-Grade Body Heat Energy Harvesting

Electricity generation from body heat has garnered significant interest as a sustainable power source for wearable bioelectronics. In this work, we report stretchable n-type thermoelectric fibers based on the hybrid of Ti3C2Tx MXene nanoflakes and polyurethane (MP) through a wet-spinning process. The proposed fibers are designed with a 3D interconnected porous network to achieve satisfactory electrical conductivity (σ), thermal conductivity (κ), and stretchability simultaneously. We systematically optimize the thermoelectric and mechanical traits of the MP fibers and the MP-60 (with 60 wt % MXene content) exhibits a high σ of 1.25 × 103 S m-1, an n-type Seebeck coefficient of -8.3 μV K-1, and a notably low κ of 0.19 W m-1 K-1. Additionally, the MP-60 fibers possess great stretchability and mechanical strength with a tensile strain of 434% and a breaking stress of 11.8 MPa. Toward practical application, a textile thermoelectric generator is constructed based on the MP-60 fibers and achieves a voltage of 3.6 mV with a temperature gradient between the body skin and ambient environment, highlighting the enormous potential of low-grade body heat energy harvesting.

Self-Powered Biosensor Based on DNA Walkers for Ultrasensitive MicroRNA Detection

A novel self-powered biosensor is fabricated for ultrasensitive microRNA-21 (miRNA-21) detection, which includes an enzymatic biofuel cell (EBFC), DNA walkers, a digital multimeter (DMM), and a capacitor. As a novel strategy for signal amplification, DNA walkers are designed in the cathode, while the capacitor stores electrochemical energy from the EBFC to further boost the instantaneous current displayed by the DMM. When miRNA-21 is present, the DNA walkers are provoked to walk from as-opened hairpin structures to other hairpin structures, generating double-strand DNA structures, which stimulate [Ru(NH3)6]3+ to be adsorbed on the cathode surface by electrostatic interaction. Afterward, [Ru(NH3)6]3+ is reduced to [Ru(NH3)6]2+, and the open circuit voltage (EOCV) is significantly increased. Depending on the approach of signal amplification from DNA walkers, this biosensor displays an ultrasensitive assay toward miRNA-21 in the range of 0.5 to 104 fM, with a detection limit of 0.15 fM. In addition, this self-powered biosensor displays high selectivity for miRNA-21 assay in human serum samples.

Progress in wearable acoustical sensors for diagnostic applications

With extensive and widespread uses of miniaturized and intelligent wearable devices, continuously monitoring subtle spatial and temporal changes in human physiological states becomes crucial for daily healthcare and professional medical diagnosis. Wearable acoustical sensors and related monitoring systems can be comfortably applied onto human body with a distinctive function of non-invasive detection. This paper reviews recent advances in wearable acoustical sensors for medical applications. Structural designs and characteristics of the structural components of wearable electronics, including piezoelectric and capacitive micromachined ultrasonic transducer (i.e., pMUT and cMUT), surface acoustic wave sensors (SAW) and triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) are discussed, along with their fabrication techniques and manufacturing processes. Diagnostic applications of these wearable sensors for detection of biomarkers or bioreceptors and diagnostic imaging have further been discussed. Finally, main challenges and future research directions in these fields are highlighted.

Radiative cooling and anisotropic wettability in E-textile for comfortable biofluid monitoring

Long-term wearing comfort is essential for future advanced electronic textiles (e-textiles). Herein, we fabricate a skin-comfortable e-textile for long-term wearing experience on human epidermis. Such e-textile was simply fabricated through two different dip coating methods and single-side air plasma treatment, which couples radiative thermal and moisture management for biofluid monitoring. The silk-based substrate with improved optical properties and anisotropic wettability can provide a temperature drop of 1.4 °C under strong sunlight. Moreover, the anisotropic wettability of the e-textile can provide a dryer skin microenvironment by comparing with traditional fabric. The fiber electrodes weaving into the inner side of the substrate can noninvasively monitor multiple sweat biomarkers (i.e., pH, uric acid, and Na+). Such a synergistic strategy may pave a new path to design next-generation e-textiles with significantly improved comfort.

Mechanically-Guided 3D Assembly for Architected Flexible Electronics

Architected flexible electronic devices with rationally designed 3D geometries have found essential applications in biology, medicine, therapeutics, sensing/imaging, energy, robotics, and daily healthcare. Mechanically-guided 3D assembly methods, exploiting mechanics principles of materials and structures to transform planar electronic devices fabricated using mature semiconductor techniques into 3D architected ones, are promising routes to such architected flexible electronic devices. Here, we comprehensively review mechanically-guided 3D assembly methods for architected flexible electronics. Mainstream methods of mechanically-guided 3D assembly are classified and discussed on the basis of their fundamental deformation modes (i.e., rolling, folding, curving, and buckling). Diverse 3D interconnects and device forms are then summarized, which correspond to the two key components of an architected flexible electronic device. Afterward, structure-induced functionalities are highlighted to provide guidelines for function-driven structural designs of flexible electronics, followed by a collective summary of their resulting applications. Finally, conclusions and outlooks are given, covering routes to achieve extreme deformations and dimensions, inverse design methods, and encapsulation strategies of architected 3D flexible electronics, as well as perspectives on future applications.

Fluorescent Fiber-Shaped Aqueous Zinc-Ion Batteries for Bifunctional Multicolor-Emission/Energy-Storage Textiles

Wearable smart textiles are natural carriers to enable imperceptible and highly permeable sensing and response to environmental conditions via the system integration of multiple functional fibers. However, the existing massive interfaces between different functional fibers significantly increase the complexity and reduce the wearability of the textile system. Thus, it is significant yet challenging to achieve all-in-one multifunctional fibers for realizing miniaturized and lightweight smart textiles with high reliability. Herein, as bifunctional electrolyte additives, fluorescent carbon dots with abundant zincophilic functional groups are introduced into electrolytes to develop fluorescent fiber-shaped aqueous zinc-ion batteries (FFAZIBs). Originating from effective dendrite suppression of Zn anodes and multiple active sites of freestanding Prussian blue cathodes, high energy density (0.17 Wh·cm-3) and long-term cyclability (78.9% capacity retention after 1500 cycles) are achieved for FFAZIBs. More importantly, the one-dimensional structure ensures the same luminance in all directions of FFAZIBs, enabling the form of multicolor display-in-battery textiles.

Active Micelle Pumping Channel Triggers Nonequilibrium Surface Excess Aggregation

Adsorbate transport during the electrochemical process mostly follows the electric-field direction or the high-to-low direction along the concentration gradient and thus often limits the reactant concentration at the adsorption site and requires specific mechanical or chemical bonds of adsorbates to trigger local excess aggregation for advanced framework structure assembly. Herein, we have discovered an active pumping channel during electrochemical adsorption of a manganese colloid, which follows a low-to-high direction inverse concentration gradient. It triggers surface excess micelle aggregation with even over 16-folds higher concentration than that in bulk owing to hydrogen-bonding difference of the micelle surface between in bulk and at the water surface. Micelles in the channel exhibit unique polymerization behaviors by directly polymerizing monomer micelles to form highly catalytic MnO2 of dendritic frameworks, which can serve as a scalable thin-layer aqueous-phase reactor. It increases the understanding of the interface-dependent dynamic nature of micelle or more adsorbates and inspires transformative synthesizing approaches for advanced oxide materials.

Perspectives on recent advancements in energy harvesting, sensing and bio-medical applications of piezoelectric gels

The development of next-generation bioelectronics, as well as the powering of consumer and medical devices, require power sources that are soft, flexible, extensible, and even biocompatible. Traditional energy storage devices (typically, batteries and supercapacitors) are rigid, unrecyclable, offer short-lifetime, contain hazardous chemicals and possess poor biocompatibility, hindering their utilization in wearable electronics. Therefore, there is a genuine unmet need for a new generation of innovative energy-harvesting materials that are soft, flexible, bio-compatible, and bio-degradable. Piezoelectric gels or PiezoGels are a smart crystalline form of gels with polar ordered structures that belongs to the broader family of piezoelectric material, which generate electricity in response to mechanical stress or deformation. Given that PiezoGels are structurally similar to hydrogels, they offer several advantages including intrinsic chirality, crystallinity, degree of ordered structures, mechanical flexibility, biocompatibility, and biodegradability, emphasizing their potential applications ranging from power generation to bio-medical applications. Herein, we describe recent examples of new functional PiezoGel materials employed for energy harvesting, sensing, and wound dressing applications. First, this review focuses on the principles of piezoelectric generators (PEGs) and the advantages of using hydrogels as PiezoGels in energy and biomedical applications. Next, we provide a detailed discussion on the preparation, functionalization, and fabrication of PiezoGel-PEGs (P-PEGs) for the applications of energy harvesting, sensing and wound healing/dressing. Finally, this review concludes with a discussion of the current challenges and future directions of P-PEGs.

Indoor Photovoltaic Fiber with an Efficiency of 25.53% under 1500 Lux Illumination

Photovoltaic devices represent an efficient electricity generation mode. Integrating them into textiles offers exciting opportunities for smart electronic textiles-with the ultimate goal of supplying power for wearable technology-which is poised to change how electronic devices are designed. Many human activities occur indoors, so realizing indoor photovoltaic fibers (IPVFs) that can be woven into textiles to power wearables is critical, although currently unavailable. Here, a dye-sensitized IPVF is constructed by incorporating titanium dioxide nanoparticles into aligned nanotubes to produce close contact and stable interfaces among active layers on a curved fiber substrate, thus presenting efficient charge transport and low charge recombination in the photoanode. With the combination of highly conductive core-sheath Ti/carbon nanotube fiber as a counter electrode, the IPVF shows a certified power conversion efficiency of 25.53% under 1500 lux illuminance. Its performance variation is below 5% after bending, twisting, or pressing for 1000 cycles. These IPVFs are further integrated with fiber batteries as self-charging power textiles, which are demonstrated to effectively supply electricity for wearables, solving the power supply problem in this important direction.

Highly Reliable Textile-Type Memristor by Designing Aligned Nanochannels

Information-processing devices are the core components of modern electronics. Integrating them into textiles is the indispensable demand for electronic textiles to form close-loop functional systems. Memristors with crossbar configuration are regarded as promising building blocks to design woven information-processing devices that seamlessly unify with textiles. However, the memristors always suffer from severe temporal and spatial variations due to the random growth of conductive filaments during filamentary switching processes. Here, inspired by the ion nanochannels across synaptic membranes, a highly reliable textile-type memristor made of Pt/CuZnS memristive fiber with aligned nanochannels, showing small set voltage variation (<5.6%) under ultralow set voltage (≈0.089 V), high on/off ratio (≈106 ), and low power consumption (0.1 nW), is reported. Experimental evidence indicate that nanochannels with abundant active S defects can anchor silver ions and confine their migrations to form orderly and efficient conductive filaments. Such memristive performances enable the resultant textile-type memristor array to have high device-to-device uniformity and process complex physiological data like brainwave signals with high recognition accuracy (95%). The textile-type memristor arrays are mechanically durable to withstand hundreds of bending and sliding deformations, and seamlessly unified with sensing, power-supplying, and displaying textiles/fibers to form all-textile integrated electronic systems for new generation human-machine interactions.

Nanostructured wearable electrochemical and biosensor towards healthcare management: a review

In recent years, there has been a rapid increase in demand for wearable sensors, particularly these tracking the surroundings, fitness, and health of people. Thus, selective detection in human body fluid is a demand for a smart lifestyle by quick monitoring of electrolytes, drugs, toxins, metabolites and biomolecules, proteins, and the immune system. In this review, these parameters along with the main features of the latest and mostly cited research work on nanostructured wearable electrochemical and biosensors are surveyed. This study aims to help researchers and engineers choose the most suitable selective and sensitive sensor. Wearable sensors have broad and effective sensing platforms, such as contact lenses, Google Glass, skin-patch, mouth gourds, smartwatches, underwear, wristbands, and others. For increasing sensor reliability, additional advancements in electrochemical and biosensor precision, stability in uncontrolled environments, and reproducible sample conveyance are necessary. In addition, the optimistic future of wearable electrochemical sensors in fields, such as remote and customized healthcare and well-being is discussed. Overall, wearable electrochemical and biosensing technologies hold great promise for improving personal healthcare and monitoring performance with the potential to have a significant impact on daily lives. These technologies enable real-time body sensing and the communication of comprehensive physiological information.

Personal Microenvironment Management by Smart Textiles with Negative Oxygen Ions Releasing and Radiative Cooling Performance

In recent years, significant strides have been made in the development of smart clothing, which combines traditional apparel with advanced technology. As our climate and environment undergo continuous changes, it has become critically important to invent and refine sophisticated textiles that enhance thermal comfort and human health. In this study, we present a "wearable forest-like textile". This textile is based on helical lignocellulose-tourmaline composite fibers, boasting mechanical strength that outperforms that of cellulose-based and natural macrofibers. This wearable microenvironment does more than generate approximately 18625 ions/cm³ of negative oxygen ions; it also effectively purifies particulate matter. Furthermore, our experiments demonstrate that the negative oxygen ion environment can slow fruit decay by neutralizing free radicals, suggesting promising implications for aging retardation. In addition, this wearable microenvironment reflects solar irradiation and selectively transmits human body thermal radiation, enabling effective radiative cooling of approximately 8.2 °C compared with conventional textiles. This sustainable and efficient wearable microenvironment provides a compelling textile choice that can enhance personal heat management and human health.
