Phytoplankton Communities Exhibit a Stronger Response to Environmental Changes than Bacterioplankton in Three Subtropical Reservoirs

From disruption to adaptation: Response of phytoplankton communities in representative impounded lakes to China's South-to-North Water Diversion Project

Impounded lakes are often interconnected in large-scale water diversion projects to form a coordinated system for water allocation and regulation. The alternating runoff and transferred water can significantly impact local ecosystems, which are initially reflected in the sensitive phytoplankton. Nonetheless, limited information is available on the temporal dynamics and assembly patterns of phytoplankton community in impounded lakes responding to continuous and periodic water diversion. Herein, a long-term monitoring from 2013 to 2020 were conducted to systematically investigate the response of phytoplankton community, including its characteristics, stability, and the ecological processes governing community assembly, in representative impounded lakes to the South-to-North Water Diversion Project (SNWDP) in China. In the initial stage of the SNWDP, the phytoplankton diversity indices experienced a decrease during both non-water diversion periods (8.5 %∼21.2 %) and water diversion periods (5.6 %∼12.2 %), implying a disruption in the aquatic ecosystem. But the regular delivery of high-quality water from the Yangtze River gradually increased phytoplankton diversity and mediated ecological assembly processes shifting from stochastic to deterministic. Meanwhile, reduced nutrients restricted the growth of phytoplankton, pushing species to interact more closely to maintain the functionality and stability of the co-occurrence network. The partial least squares path model revealed that ecological process (path coefficient = 0.525, p < 0.01) and interspecies interactions in networks (path coefficient = -0.806, p < 0.01) jointly influenced the keystone and dominant species, ultimately resulting in an improvement in stability (path coefficient = 0.878, p < 0.01). Overall, the phytoplankton communities experienced an evolutionary process from short-term disruption to long-term adaptation, demonstrating resilience and adaptability in response to the challenges posed by the SNWDP. This study revealed the response and adaptation mechanism of phytoplankton communities in impounded lakes to water diversion projects, which is helpful for maintaining the lake ecological health and formulating rational water management strategies.

Revealing assembly mechanisms of algal communities in aquatic microniches: Shifts in diversity patterns, microbial interactions and stability along nutrient gradients

Algal blooms threaten water quality and ecosystem stability in aquatic habitats globally, yet dynamics regulating phytoplankton community assembly, the basis of blooms, remain poorly characterized in small water bodies. Here, we employed high-throughput sequencing to analyze drivers structuring phytoplankton across a trophic gradient of 10 small water bodies over 12 consecutive months. Cyanobacteria and Chlorophyta were identified as potential seed banks priming blooms. Temporal variation in community composition was muted in nutrient-limited waters given Cyanobacteria dominance. Environmental factors and interspecific relationships jointly governed temporal phytoplankton dynamics. Phytoplankton, exhibiting greater sensitivity, responded more rapidly than bacterioplankton to environmental and biological fluctuations. This research provides a robust bench mark characterizing planktonic successional trajectories across small water bodies varying in trophic status. Results reinforce ecological mechanisms underpinning biological control strategies to mitigate algal proliferation and inform water quality management of these ubiquitous aquatic ecosystems.

Reservoir regulation-induced variations in water level impacts cyanobacterial bloom by the changing physiochemical conditions

Gaining insight into the impact of reservoir regulation on algal blooms is essential for comprehending the dynamic changes and response mechanisms in the reservoir ecosystem. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive field investigation linking physiochemical parameters, and phytoplankton community to different water regimes in the Three Gorges Reservoir. Our aim was to explore the effects of reservoir regulation on the extinction of cyanobacterial blooms. The results showed that during the four regulatory events, the water levels decreased by 2.02-4.33 m, and the average water velocity increased 68 % compared to before. The average total phosphorus and total nitrogen concentrations reduced by up to 20 %, and the cyanobacterial biomass correspondingly declined dramatically, between 66.94 % and 75.17 %. As the change of water level decline increasing, there was a significant increase of algal diversity and a notable decrease of algal cell density. Additionally, a shift in the dominant phytoplankton community from Cyanobacteria to Chlorophyceae was observed. Our analysis indicated that water level fluctuations had a pronounced effect on cyanobacterial extinction, with hydrodynamic changes resulting in a reduction of cyanobacterial biomass. This research underlined the potential for employing hydrodynamic management as a viable strategy to mitigate the adverse ecological impacts of cyanobacterial blooms, providing a solution for reservoir's eco-environmental management.

Exploring microbiome and plankton responses and interactions in the mangrove ecosystem through eDNA and network analysis

The comprehensive analysis of multiple biological communities is essential for assessing diversities within mangrove ecosystems, yet such studies are infrequent. Environmental DNA (eDNA) facilitates the simultaneous exploration of organisms across various levels within a single ecosystem. In this investigation, 16S rRNA, cytochrome C oxidase I (COI), and Mito-fish primers were employed to characterize the microbiome, eukaryotic plankton, and fish communities, along with their intricate interactions, across 24 samples from three Chinese mangrove reservoirs. The resulting dataset encompasses 3779 taxonomic groups (genus level), spanning from the microbiome to vertebrates. Diversity analysis unveiled a higher level of stability in the microbiome community compared to plankton, underscoring the superior site-specificity of plankton. The association analysis revealed that biodiversity was primarily affected by temperature, turbidity, and fluorescent dissolved organic matter (fDOM). Notably, the physicochemical factors, turbidity, and fDOM had a more pronounced impact on the microbiome than on plankton, explaining their distinct sensitivities to site-specific conditions. Network analysis constructed 15 biological interaction subnetworks representing various community connections. The most connected genera in each subnetwork, highly responsive to different environmental factors, could serve as potential indicators of distinct ecosystem states. In summary, our findings represent the first comparison of the response sensitivities of different communities and the construction of their interaction networks in mangrove environments. These results contribute valuable insights into marine ecosystem dynamics and the role of environmental factors in shaping biodiversity.

Seasonality regulates the distinct assembly patterns of microeukaryotic plankton communities in the Three Gorges Reservoir, China

The hydrographic and environmental factors along the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) have been significantly altered since the Three Gorges Dam (TGD) began working in 2006. Here, we collected 54 water samples, and then measured the environmental factors, followed by sequencing of the 18S rRNA gene and subsequent analysis of community assembly mechanisms. The findings indicated that the majority of environmental variables (such as AN, TP, Chl-a, CODMn, and Cu) exhibited both temporal and spatial variations due to the influences of the TGD. The distribution of different environmental factors and microeukaryotic plankton communities is influenced by the changing seasons. The community structure in TGR showed variations across three seasons, possibly due to variations in their environmental preferences, inherent dissimilarities, and seasonal succession. Furthermore, different communities exhibited a comparable distance-decay trend, suggesting that distinct taxa are likely to exhibit a similar spatial distribution. In addition, the community formation in TGR was influenced by both deterministic and stochastic factors, with the balance between them being mainly controlled by the season. Specifically, deterministic processes could explain 33.9-51.1% of community variations, while stochastic processes could contribute 23.5-32.2%. The findings of this research demonstrated that the varying ecological processes' significance relied on environmental gradients, geographical scale, and ecological conditions. This could offer a fresh outlook on comprehending the composition, assembly mechanisms, and distribution patterns of microeukaryotic plankton in reservoir ecosystems.

Microbial community structure and diversity attached to the periphyton in different urban aquatic habitats

Periphyton is a complex community composed of diverse prokaryotes and eukaryotes; understanding the characteristics of microbial communities within periphyton becomes crucial for biogeochemical cycles and energy dynamics of aquatic ecosystems. To further elucidate the community characteristics of periphyton across varied aquatic habitats, including unpolluted ecologically restored lakes, aquaculture ponds, and areas adjacent to domestic and industrial wastewater treatment plant outfalls, we explored the composition and diversity of prokaryotic and eukaryotic communities in periphyton by employing Illumina MiSeq sequencing. Our findings indicated that the prokaryotic communities were predominantly composed of Proteobacteria (40.92%), Bacteroidota (21.01%), and Cyanobacteria (10.12%), whereas the eukaryotic communities were primarily characterized by the dominance of Bacillariophyta (24.09%), Chlorophyta (20.83%), and Annelida (15.31%). Notably, Flavobacterium emerged as a widely distributed genus among the prokaryotic community. Unclassified_Tobrilidae exhibited higher abundance in unpolluted ecologically restored lakes. Chaetogaster and Nais were enriched in aquaculture ponds and domestic wastewater treatment plant outfall area, respectively, while Surirella and Gomphonema dominated industrial sewage treatment plant outfall area. The alpha diversity of eukaryotes was higher in unpolluted ecologically restored lakes. pH and nitrogen content (NO 2 - - N ,NO 3 - - N , and TN) significantly explained the variations for prokaryotic and eukaryotic community structures, respectively. Eukaryotic communities exhibited a more pronounced response to habitat variations compared to prokaryotic communities. Moreover, the association networks revealed an intensive positive correlation between dominant Bacillariophyta and Bacteroidota. This study provided useful data for identifying keystone species and understanding their ecological functions.

Succession of diversity, assembly mechanisms, and activities of the microeukaryotic community throughout Scrippsiella acuminata (Dinophyceae) bloom phases

Harmful algal bloom (HAB) is a rapidly expanding marine ecological hazard. Although numerous studies have been carried out about the ecological impact and the ecological mechanism of HAB outbreaks, few studies have comprehensively addressed the shifts of species composition, metabolic activity level, driving factors and community assembly mechanisms of microeukaryotic plankton in the course of the bloom event. To fill the gap of research, we conducted 18S ribosomal DNA and RNA sequencing during the initiation, development, sustenance and decline stages of a Scrippsiella acuminata (S. acuminata) bloom at the coastal sea of Fujian Province, China. We found that the bloom event caused a decrease in microeukaryotic plankton species diversity and increase in community homogeneity. Our results revealed that the RNA- and DNA-inferred communities were similar, but α-diversity was more dynamic in RNA- than in DNA-inferred communities. The main taxa with high projected metabolic activity (with RNA:DNA ratio as the proxy) during the bloom included dinoflagellates, Cercozoa, Chlorophyta, Protalveolata, and diatoms. The role of deterministic processes in microeukaryotic plankton community assembly increased during the bloom, but stochastic processes were always the dominant assembly mechanism throughout the bloom process. Our findings improve the understanding of temporal patterns, driving factors and assembly mechanisms underlying the microeukarytic plankton community in a dinoflagellate bloom.

Biological and Chemical Approaches for Controlling Harmful Microcystis Blooms

The proliferation of harmful cyanobacterial blooms dominated by Microcystis aeruginosa has become an increasingly serious problem in freshwater ecosystems due to climate change and eutrophication. Microcystis-blooms in freshwater generate compounds with unpleasant odors, reduce the levels of dissolved O2, and excrete microcystins into aquatic ecosystems, potentially harming various organisms, including humans. Various chemical and biological approaches have thus been developed to mitigate the impact of the blooms, though issues such as secondary pollution and high economic costs have not been adequately addressed. Red clays and H2O2 are conventional treatment methods that have been employed worldwide for the mitigation of the blooms, while novel approaches, such as the use of plant or microbial metabolites and antagonistic bacteria, have also recently been proposed. Many of these methods rely on the generation of reactive oxygen species, the inhibition of photosynthesis, and/or the disruption of cellular membranes as their mechanisms of action, which may also negatively impact other freshwater microbiota. Nevertheless, the underlying molecular mechanisms of anticyanobacterial chemicals and antagonistic bacteria remain unclear. This review thus discusses both conventional and innovative approaches for the management of M. aeruginosa in freshwater bodies.

Core taxa drive microeukaryotic community stability of a deep subtropical reservoir after complete mixing

Microeukaryotes are key for predicting the change of ecosystem processes in the face of a disturbance. However, their vertical responses to multiple interconnected factors caused by water mixing remain unknown. Here, we conducted a 12-month high-frequency study to compare the impacts of mixing disturbances on microeukaryotic community structure and stability over different depths in a stratified reservoir. We demonstrate that core and satellite microeukaryotic compositions and interactions in surface waters were not resistant to water mixing, but significantly recovered. This was because the water temperature rebounded to the pre-mixing level. Core microeukaryotes maintained community stability in surface waters with high recovery capacity after water mixing. In contrast, the changes in water temperature, chlorophyll-a, and nutrients resulted in steep and prolonged variations in the bottom core and satellite microeukaryotic compositions and interactions. Under low environmental fluctuation, the recovery of microbial communities did not affect nutrient cycling in surface waters. Under high environmental fluctuation, core and satellite microeukaryotic compositions in bottom waters were significantly correlated with the multi-nutrient cycling index. Our findings shed light on different mechanisms of plankton community resilience in reservoir ecosystems to a major disturbance over depths, highlighting the role of bottom microeukaryotes in nutrient cycling.

Algal or bacterial community: Who can be an effective indicator of the impact of reclaimed water recharge in an urban river

Reclaimed water has been widely utilized for water resource replenishment, yet little is known regarding its impacts on various microorganisms in the receiving water. To address this knowledge gap, we systematically investigated the responses of bacteria and algae to the recharge of reclaimed water by using the high-throughput sequencing technology in the urban Chaobai River. After the inputs of reclaimed water, lower contents of NO2--N, NH4+-N, and TP were observed in the downstream section compared to that of upstream without reclaimed water, indicating that reclaimed water could improve the water quality of the receiving water. Correspondingly, both bacterial and algal communities showed the decreased network complexity in the downstream section, but many common freshwater bacteria and typical bloom-forming algae were dominant in the downstream, potentially suggesting that algae were more sensitive to the local environmental conditions. More importantly, although nitrogen and phosphorus served as the paramount factors in shaping both bacterial and algal communities, environmental selection contributed more to algal rather than bacterial community, and simultaneously algal variations could further affect bacterial dynamics in the urban river. Overall, these findings revealed distinct characteristics of bacteria and algae in responding to the reclaimed water recharge, highlighting the superiority of algae in indicating environmental changes, especially in monitoring and regulating the replenishment of reclaimed water in urban rivers.

Phytoplankton interspecific interactions modified by symbiotic fungi and bacterial metabolites under environmentally relevant hydrogen peroxide concentrations stress

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), which accumulates in water and triggers oxidative stress for aquatic microbes, has been shown to have profound impacts on planktonic microbial community dynamics including cyanobacterial bloom formation. Yet, potential effects of H2O2 on interspecific relationships of phytoplankton-microbe symbiotic interactions remain unclear. Here, we investigated effects of environmentally relevant H2O2 concentrations on interspecific microbial relationships in algae-microbe symbiosis. Microbes play a crucial role in the competition between M. aeruginosa and Chlorella vulgaris at low H2O2 concentrations (∼400 nM), in which fungi and bacteria protect Microcystis aeruginosa from oxidative stress. Moreover, H2O2 stimulated the synthesis and release of extracellular microcystin-LR from Microcystis aeruginosa, while intracellular microcystin-LR concentrations remained at a relatively constant level. In the presence of H2O2, loss of organoheterocyclic compounds, organic acids and ketones contributed to the growth of M. aeruginosa, but the reduction of vitamins inhibited it. Regulation of interspecific relationships by H2O2 is achieved by its action on fungal species and bacterial secretory metabolites. This study explored the response of phytoplankton interspecific relationships in symbiotic phytoplankton-microbe interactions to environmentally relevant H2O2 concentrations stress, providing a theoretical basis for understanding the formation of harmful-algae blooming and impact of photochemical properties of water on aquatic ecological safety and stability.

Relic DNA obscures DNA-based profiling of multiple microbial taxonomic groups in a river-reservoir ecosystem

Numerous studies have investigated the spatiotemporal variability in water microbial communities, yet the effects of relic DNA on microbial community profiles, especially microeukaryotes, remain far from fully understood. Here, total and active bacterial and microeukaryotic community compositions were characterized using propidium monoazide (PMA) treatment coupled with high-throughput sequencing in a river-reservoir ecosystem. Beta diversity analysis showed a significant difference in community composition between both the PMA untreated and treated bacteria and microeukaryotes; however, the differentiating effect was much stronger for microeukaryotes. Relic DNA only resulted in underestimation of the relative abundances of Bacteroidota and Nitrospirota, while other bacterial taxa exhibited no significant changes. As for microeukaryotes, the relative abundances of some phytoplankton (e.g. Chlorophyta, Dinoflagellata and Ochrophyta) and fungi were greater after relic DNA removal, whereas Cercozoa and Ciliophora showed the opposite trend. Moreover, relic DNA removal weakened the size and complexity of cross-trophic microbial networks and significantly changed the relationships between environmental factors and microeukaryotic community composition. However, there was no significant difference in the rates of temporal community turnover between the PMA untreated and treated samples for either bacteria or microeukaryotes. Overall, our results imply that the presence of relic DNA in waters can give misleading information of the active microbial community composition, co-occurrence networks and their relationships with environmental conditions. More studies of the abundance, decay rate and functioning of nonviable DNA in freshwater ecosystems are highly recommended in the future.

Shift of phytoplankton assemblages in a temperate lake located on the eastern route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project

There remains no consensus on the effects of changes in the environment factors under the action of water diversions on phytoplankton communities. Herein the changing rules applying to phytoplankton communities subject to water diversion were unveiled based on long-term (2011-2021) time-series observations on Luoma Lake, located on the eastern route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project. We found that nitrogen decreased and then increased, while phosphorus increased after operation of the water transfer project. Algal density and diversity were not affected by water diversion, while the duration of high algal density was shorter after water diversion. Phytoplankton composition had dramatic differences before and after water transfer. The phytoplankton communities exhibited greater fragility when they first experienced a human-mediated disturbance, and then they gradually adapted to more interferences and acquired stronger stability. We furthermore found the niche of Cyanobacteria narrowed while that of Euglenozoa widened under the pressure of water diversion. In addition to WT and DO, the main environmental factor before water diversion was NH₄-N, whereas the effect of NO₃-N and TN on phytoplankton communities increased after water diversion. These findings fill the knowledge gap as to the consequence of water diversion on water environments and phytoplankton communities.

Dynamics of Bacterioplankton Communities during Wet and Dry Seasons in the Danjiangkou Reservoir in Hubei, China

Water quality is directly linked to drinking water safety for millions of people receiving the water. The Danjiangkou Reservoir is the main water source for the Middle Route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project (MR-SNWDP), located in the vicinity of Henan and Hubei provinces in China. Aquatic microorganisms are key indicators of biologically assessing and monitoring the water quality of the reservoir as they are sensitive to environmental and water quality changes. This study aimed to investigate the spatiotemporal variations in bacterioplankton communities during wet (April) and dry (October) seasons at eight monitoring points in Hanku reservoir and five monitoring points in Danku reservoir. Each time point had three replicates, labeled as wet season Hanku (WH), wet season Danku (WD), dry season Hanku (DH), and dry season Danku (DD) of Danjiangkou Reservoir in 2021. High-throughput sequencing (Illumina PE250) of the 16S rRNA gene was performed, and alpha (ACE and Shannon) and beta (PCoA and NDMS) diversity indices were analyzed. The results showed that the dry season (DH and DD) had more diverse bacterioplankton communities compared to the wet season (WH and WD). Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Firmicutes were the most abundant phyla, and Acinetobacter, Exiguobacterium, and Planomicrobium were abundant in the wet season, while polynucleobacter was abundant in the dry season. The functional prediction of metabolic pathways revealed six major functions including carbohydrate metabolism, membrane transport, amino acid metabolism, signal transduction, and energy metabolism. Redundancy analysis showed that environmental parameters greatly affected bacterioplankton diversity during the dry season compared to the wet season. The findings suggest that seasonality has a significant impact on bacterioplankton communities, and the dry season has more diverse communities influenced by environmental parameters. Further, the relatively high abundance of certain bacteria such as Acinetobacter deteriorated the water quality during the wet season compared to the dry season. Our findings have significant implications for water resource management in China, and other countries facing similar challenges. However, further investigations are required to elucidate the role of environmental parameters in influencing bacterioplankton diversity in order to devise potential strategies for improving water quality management in the reservoir.

Evaluating the effects of aquaculture on the freshwater lake from the perspective of plankton communities: The diversity, co-occurrence patterns and their underlying mechanisms

Aquaculture has significant impacts on freshwater lakes, but plankton communities, as key components of the microbial food web, are rarely considered when assessing the impacts of aquaculture. Revealing the dynamics of plankton communities, including bacterioplankton, phytoplankton and zooplankton, under anthropological disturbances is critical for predicting the freshwater ecosystem functioning in response to future environmental changes. In the present study, we examined the impacts of aquaculture on water quality, plankton diversity and the co-occurrence patterns within plankton metacommunities in a shallow freshwater lake. The study zones are influenced by the 20-year historical intensive aquaculture, but now they are undergoing either ecological aquaculture or ecological restoration. Our results showed that ecological aquaculture was more efficient in nitrogen removal than ecological restoration. Moreover, lower bacterioplankton diversity but higher phytoplankton and zooplankton diversity were found in the ecological aquaculture and ecological restoration zones compared to the control zone. The lower network connectivity of the plankton metacommunities in the ecological aquaculture and ecological restoration zones indicated the decreasing complexity of potential microbial food web, suggesting a possible lower resistance of the plankton metacommunities to future disturbance. Furthermore, plankton communities of different trophic levels were driven under distinct mechanisms. The bacterioplankton community was primarily affected by abiotic factors, whereas the phytoplankton and zooplankton communities were explained more by trophic interactions. These results revealed the impacts of aquaculture on the plankton communities and their potential interactions, thereby providing fundamental information for better understanding the impacts of aquaculture on freshwater ecosystem functioning.

Cyanobacterial bloom intensities determine planktonic eukaryote community structure and stability

The intensity of cyanobacterial blooms that predominate in the world's lakes and reservoirs is variable, which may lead to differing effects on the freshwater ecosystem. Planktonic eukaryotes play key roles in the structure and function of freshwater ecosystems; however, little is known about the influence of cyanobacterial blooms on eukaryotic plankton communities and their function. Herein, the dynamics of eukaryotic plankton communities in Hongze Lake, which is the fourth largest freshwater lake in China, with a range of bloom levels occurred, from low to high, were studied to reveal the effect of cyanobacterial blooms' spatial heterogeneity on planktonic eukaryotes. Results showed that the diversity, richness, and evenness of eukaryotic plankton community were not affected by low level of bloom; however, they were decreased obviously by high level of bloom. Metazoa, Ochrophyta, Chloroplastida, Cryptomonadales, and Ciliophora were the main planktonic eukaryotes in this lake. Metazoa relative abundance declined 25.1% and relative abundance of eukaryotic phytoplankton (mainly Ochrophyta, Chloroplastida, and Cryptomonadales) and Ciliophora increased 17.4% and 2.0%, respectively, during the period with low level of bloom; conversely, the site with the high bloom level manifested the opposite changes. The linkage density of planktonic eukaryotic network was 0.188 and 0.138 with low and high level of bloom, respectively, indicating the stability of planktonic eukaryotes was lower when a high level of bloom occurred compared to that of a low bloom level. Our findings indicate that cyanobacterial blooms should be controlled at low level to avoid their obvious negative impact on microeukaryotes in lakes or reservoirs.

Occurrence and distribution of antibiotic resistant bacteria and genes in the Fuhe urban river and its driving mechanism

Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in urban rivers can affect human health via the food chain and human pathogenic bacteria diffusion. Sediment can be a sink for ARGs, causing second sources of ARG contamination through diffusion. Therefore, we evaluated the effects of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) and phytoplankton on the distribution of the ARGs in the sediment and water of Fuhe river in Baoding city, China. The ARGs and human pathogenic bacteria in urban river were analyzed, and the phytoplankton and bacterial abundance, TPH, and physicochemical parameters ranked using the partial least squares path modelling (PLS-PM) and aggregated boosted tree (ABT) analysis. The main ARGs in Fuhe river sediment were sulfonamide and tetracycline resistance genes, with sul2 exhibiting the highest level. The main human pathogenic bacteria in the pathogens pool were Clostridium, Bacillus and Burkholderiaceae, with Clostridium demonstrating a positive correlation with SulAfolP01. The PLS-PM analysis confirmed that, among the multiple drivers, water physicochemical factors, TPH, phytoplankton, and heavy metals positively and directly affected the ARG profiles in sediment while sediment heavy metals and bacterial communities did the similar effect. These factors (nutrient factors, heavy metals, and TPH) in water and sediment posed the opposite total effect on ARGs in the sediment, suggesting medium factors should have a conclusive effect on the distribution of ARGs in the sediment. The ABT analysis showed that dissolved oxygen (DO), total nitrogen (TN) and Chlorophyta were the most important factors affecting the ARGs distribution in the water, while TN affected the distribution of the genes in the sediment.

Salinity Is a Key Determinant for the Microeukaryotic Community in Lake Ecosystems of the Inner Mongolia Plateau, China

The arid and semiarid areas experienced remarkable lake shrinkage during recent decades due to intensive human activities and climate change, which would result in unprecedented changes of microeukaryotic communities. However, little is known about how climate change affects the structure and ecological mechanisms of microeukaryotic communities in this area. Here, we used an 18S rRNA gene-based high-throughput sequencing approach to explore the structure, interspecies interaction, and assembly processes of the microeukaryotic community in lake ecosystems of the Inner Mongolia Plateau. As a direct result of climate change, salinity has become the key determinant of the lacustrine microeukaryotic community in this region. The microeukaryotic community in this ecosystem can be divided into three groups: salt (Lake Daihai), brackish (Lake Dalinuoer) and freshwater lakes. Co-occurrence network analysis revealed that salinity shapes the interspecies interactions of the microeukaryotic community. This causes interspecies interactions to change from antagonistic to cooperative with an increase in salinity. Phylogenetic-based β-nearest taxon distance analyses revealed that stochastic processes mainly dominated the microeukaryotic community assembly in lake ecosystems of the Inner Mongolia Plateau, and salinity stress drove the assembly processes of the microeukaryotic community from stochastic to deterministic. Overall, these findings expand the current understanding of interspecies interactions and assembly processes of microeukaryotic communities during climate change in lake ecosystems of the Inner Mongolia Plateau.

Microeukaryotic Community Shifting Along a Lentic-Lotic Continuum

As an important regulator of ecosystem functions in river systems, microeukaryotes play an important role in energy and material conversion, yet little is known about the shift along a lentic-lotic continuum. In this study, the 18S rRNA genes sequencing was used to identify the microeukaryotic communities at 82 sites along a lentic-lotic continuum with the aim of understanding the impact of upstream inlet river on microeukaryotic communities in Baiyang Lake (BYD) and its downstream. Our results showed that the upstream inlet river affected the diversity and community composition of microeukaryotes in BYD and downstream rivers, and environmental variables greatly affected the composition of microeukaryotic community. The community composition in BYD had lower variabilities. Co-occurrence network analysis revealed that the network was non-random and clearly parsed into three modules, and different modules were relatively more abundant to a particular area. As keystone taxa, some nodes of the upstream microeukaryotic network played an important role in structuring network and maintaining the stability of the ecosystem. In BYD and downstream, the microeukaryotic network was highly fragmented, and the loss of keystone taxa would have an adverse impact on the integrity and function of the microeukaryotic community. Microeukaryotes had strong tendencies to co-occur, which may contribute to the stability and resilience of microeukaryotic communities. Overall, these findings extend the current understanding of the diversity and community composition of microeukaryotic along a lentic-lotic continuum.

Effects of Suspended Particles on Exopolysaccharide Secretion of Two Microalgae in Jinjiang Estuary (Fujian, China)

The effects of suspended particles (SP) of different concentrations and sizes on the secretion of exopolysaccharide (EPS) by Chlorella pyrenoidosa (C. pyrenoidosa) and Microcystis flos-aquae (M. flos-aquae) in Jinjiang Estuary, Fujian Province, China were studied in co-cultures of microalgae and SP. The results show that the SP concentration has an “inhibit–promote–inhibit” effect on the secretion of EPS by C. pyrenoidosa, whereby there is an optimal concentration of SP corresponding to the largest amount of EPS secreted by C. pyrenoidosa. Low concentrations had no significant effect on the secretion of EPS from M. flos-aquae (p > 0.05), whereas higher concentrations had an inhibitory effect. The C. pyrenoidosa EPS content was found to be significantly decreased in response to SP of small particle sizes (0–75 and 75–120 μm) and significantly increased for SP of large particle sizes (120–150 and 150–500 μm). Small particle sizes (0–75 and 75–120 μm) were found to be beneficial to the secretion of EPS from M. flos-aquae, and the promotion of EPS secretion gradually decreased with the increase in SP particle size. However, when the particle size was too large (120–150 and 150–500 μm), SP had no significant effect on EPS secretion. This study is helpful for understanding the microalgae EPS secretion response to SP and provides a scientific basis for studying the mechanism of EPS secretion by algae and the effect of SP on eutrophication of the estuary.

Response of sediment and water microbial communities to submerged vegetations restoration in a shallow eutrophic lake

Submerged macrophytes are the main primary producers in shallow lakes and play an important role in structuring communities. Aquatic microbes are also an important component of aquatic ecosystems and play important roles in maintaining the health and stability of ecosystems. However, little is known about the interactions between macrophytes and microbes during the reintroduction of submerged vegetation. Here, we chose restored zones dominated by four different submerged vegetations and a bare zone in a shallow eutrophic lake to unveil the microbial diversity, composition and structure changes in sediment and water samples after submerged macrophytes were recovered for one and a half years (July 2019) and two years (April 2020). We found that the recovery of submerged vegetations decreased phosphorus content in water and sediments but increased nitrogen and carbon content in sediments. We observed that the transparency of water in the restored zones was significantly higher than that in the bare zone in July. The recovery of submerged vegetations significantly influenced the alpha diversity of bacterial communities in sediments, with higher values observed in restored zones than in bare zones, whereas no significant influence was found in the water samples. In July, the macrophyte species showed strong effects on the bacterial community composition in water and relatively little effect in sediment. However, a strong effect of the macrophyte species on the composition of bacterial communities in sediments was observed in April, which may be related to the decomposition of plant litter and the decay of detritus. Additionally, the dissimilarity of the sedimentary bacterial community may increase more slowly with environmental changes than the planktonic bacterial community dissimilarity. These results suggest that the large-scale restoration of aquatic macrophytes can not only improve water quality and change sediment characteristics but can also affect the diversity and compositions of bacterial communities, and these effects seem to be very long-lasting.

Characteristics of phytoplankton-zooplankton communities and the roles in the transmission of antibiotic resistance genes under the pressure of river contamination

Insight into the distribution of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in phytoplankton-zooplankton communities (PZCs) is essential for the management and control of antibiotic resistance in aquatic ecosystems. This study characterized the profiles of PZCs and their carried ARGs in a typical urban river and ranked the factors (water physicochemical parameters, PZCs, bacterial abundance, and mobile genetic elements) influencing the dynamic of ARG profiles by the partial least squares path modeling. Results showed Cyanobacteria, Bacillariophyta and Chlorophyta were dominant phyla of phytoplankton, and Rotifera was with the highest abundance in zooplankton. River contamination markedly altered the structure of PZCs, increasing the abundance of phytoplankton and zooplankton, decreasing the diversity of phytoplankton while elevating in zooplankton. PZCs harbored large amounts of ARGs with average relative abundance of 2.35 × 10^-2/copies nearly an order magnitude higher than the living water and most ARGs exhibited significant accumulation in PZCs with the aggravated environmental pollution. The partial least squares path modeling predicted the water parameters as the most important factor mainly playing indirect effects on ARGs via PZCs and bacterial communities, followed by mobile genetic elements as the most essential direct factor for ARGs profiles. Besides, PZCs were also important drivers for the carried ARGs via direct effects on the ARGs' composition and indirect effects on host bacterial communities of ARGs and their mobile genetic elements. The present study fills the gaps in knowledge about the distribution of ARGs in PZCs and provided a new perspective to decipher the key roles of PZCs in the maintenance and dissemination of ARGs in urban river ecosystems.

Bacterial Community Spacing Is Mainly Shaped by Unique Species in the Subalpine Natural Lakes of China

Bacterial communities have been described as early indicators of both regional and global climatic change and play a critical role in the global biogeochemical cycle. Exploring the mechanisms that determine the diversity patterns of bacterial communities and how they share different habitats along environmental gradients are, therefore, a central theme in microbial ecology research. We characterized the diversity patterns of bacterial communities in Pipahai Lake (PPH), Mayinghai Lake (MYH), and Gonghai Lake (GH), three subalpine natural lakes in Ningwu County, Shanxi, China, and analyzed the distribution of their shared and unique taxa (indicator species). Results showed that the species composition and structure of bacterial communities were significantly different among the three lakes. Both the structure of the entire bacterial community and the unique taxa were significantly influenced by the carbon content (TOC and IC) and space distance; however, the structure of the shared taxa was affected by conductivity (EC), pH, and salinity. The structure of the entire bacterial community and unique taxa were mainly affected by the same factors, suggesting that unique taxa may be important in maintaining the spatial distribution diversity of bacterial communities in subalpine natural freshwater lakes. Our results provide new insights into the diversity maintenance patterns of the bacterial communities in subalpine lakes, and suggest dispersal limitation on bacterial communities between adjacent lakes, even in a small local area. We revealed the importance of unique taxa in maintaining bacterial community structure, and our results are important in understanding how bacterial communities in subalpine lakes respond to environmental change in local habitats.

Phytocenosis biodiversity at various water levels in mesotrophic Lake Arakhley, Lake Baikal basin, Russia

Small lakes have lower water levels during dry years as was the case in 2000–2020. We sought to show the biodiversity of plant communities at various water levels in Lake Arakhley. Changes in moisture content are reflected in the cyclical variations of the water level in the lake, which decreased approximately 2 m in 2017–2018. These variations affect the biological diversity of the aquatic ecosystems. We present the latest data on the state of the plant communities in this mesotrophic lake located in the drainage basin of Lake Baikal. Lake Arakhley is a freshwater lake with low mineral content and a sodium hydrocarbonate chemical composition. Changes in the nutrient concentration were related to precipitation; inflow volume and organic matter were autochtonous at low water levels. The most diverse groups of phytoplankton found in the lake were Bacillariophyta, Chlorophyta, and Chrysophyta. High biodiversity values indicate the complexity and richness of the lake’s phytoplankton community. A prevalence of Lindavia comta was observed when water levels were low and Asterionella formosa dominated in high-water years. The maximum growth depth of lacustrine vegetation decreased from 11.0 m to 4.0 m from 1967 to 2018. Decreasing water levels were accompanied by a reduction in the littoral zone, altering the communities of aquatic plants. The hydrophyte communities were monodominant in the dry years and were represented by Ceratophyllum demersum. The vegetation cover of the lake was more diverse in high-water years and variations in the lake’s water content altered the composition of biogenic substances. These changes were reflected in the lake’s phytocenosis.

Influence of cyanobacterial blooms and environmental variation on zooplankton and eukaryotic phytoplankton in a large, shallow, eutrophic lake in China

Harmful cyanobacterial blooms are a widespread destruction to the processes and function of aquatic ecosystems. To study effects of cyanobacterial blooms on plankton diversity and composition, we analyzed data of cyanobacterial, eukaryotic phytoplankton, metazoan zooplankton, and physicochemical samples collected from 24 sites for four seasons in 2017 and 2018 from the large, shallow Lake Taihu. We found that cyanobacterial abundance significantly correlated with phytoplankton biomass, species richness, functional richness and evenness, and zooplankton biomass, Shannon's diversity, Simpson's evenness, and functional evenness and richness. High cyanobacterial abundance during summer did not result in low species and functional diversities for both phytoplankton and zooplankton compared with other seasons. Species and functional diversities of sites with high cyanobacteria abundance were not significantly lower than other sites with relatively low cyanobacteria abundance. Structure equation modeling indicated that cyanobacteria had direct influence on phytoplankton and zooplankton compositions. Physicochemical and temporal-spatial factors had direct influence on phytoplankton and zooplankton, and had indirect influence on phytoplankton and zooplankton through direct influence on cyanobacteria. Variance partitioning analysis quantified that cyanobacteria alone and interactions with physicochemical and spatial-temporal factors explained about 10% of phytoplankton variation and 26% of zooplankton variation. Our results indicate that cyanobacteria have substantial effects on phytoplankton and zooplankton biodiversity and community composition. Physicochemical and spatial-temporal factors could potentially obscure the detection of cyanobacterial effects on plankton in Lake Taihu that has cyanobacterial blooms in all seasons. Our findings may improve the understanding of dynamics and responses of plankton communities to environmental changes and cyanobacterial bloom disturbance and enhance the capability of assessing the effectiveness of eutrophication management and restoration of aquatic ecosystems.

Low shifts in salinity determined assembly processes and network stability of microeukaryotic plankton communities in a subtropical urban reservoir

BACKGROUND

Freshwater salinization may result in significant changes of microbial community composition and diversity, with implications for ecosystem processes and function. Earlier research has revealed the importance of large shifts in salinity on microbial physiology and ecology, whereas studies on the effects of smaller or narrower shifts in salinity on the microeukaryotic community in inland waters are scarce. Our aim was to unveil community assembly mechanisms and the stability of microeukaryotic plankton networks at low shifts in salinity.

RESULTS

Here, we analyzed a high-resolution time series of plankton data from an urban reservoir in subtropical China over 13 consecutive months following one periodic salinity change ranging from 0 to 6.1‰. We found that (1) salinity increase altered the community composition and led to a significant decrease of plankton diversity, (2) salinity change influenced microeukaryotic plankton community assembly primarily by regulating the deterministic-stochastic balance, with deterministic processes becoming more important with increased salinity, and (3) core plankton subnetwork robustness was higher at low-salinity levels, while the satellite subnetworks had greater robustness at the medium-/high-salinity levels. Our results suggest that the influence of salinity, rather than successional time, is an important driving force for shaping microeukaryotic plankton community dynamics.

CONCLUSIONS

Our findings demonstrate that at low salinities, even small increases in salinity are sufficient to exert a selective pressure to reduce the microeukaryotic plankton diversity and alter community assembly mechanism and network stability. Our results provide new insights into plankton ecology of inland urban waters and the impacts of salinity change in the assembly of microbiotas and network architecture. Video abstract.

Responses of abundant and rare bacterioplankton to temporal change in a subtropical urban reservoir

Investigation of bacterial community dynamics across different time scales is important for understanding how environmental conditions drive community change over time. Bacterioplankton from the surface waters of a subtropical urban reservoir in southeast China were analyzed through high-frequency sampling over 13 months to compare patterns and ecological processes between short (0‒8 weeks), medium (9‒24 weeks) and long (25‒53 weeks) time intervals. We classified the bacterial community into different subcommunities: abundant taxa (AT); conditionally rare taxa (CRT); rare taxa (RT). CRT contributed > 65% of the alpha-diversity, and temporal change of beta-diversities was more pronounced for AT and CRT than RT. The bacterial community exhibited a directional change in the short- and medium-time intervals and a convergent dynamic during the long-time interval due to a seasonal cycle. Cyanobacteria exhibited a strong succession pattern than other phyla. CRT accounted for > 76% of the network nodes in three stations. The bacteria-environment relationship and deterministic processes were stronger for large sample size at station G (n = 116) than small sample size at stations C (n = 12) and L (n = 22). These findings suggest that a high-frequency sampling approach can provide a better understanding on the time scales at which bacterioplankton can change fast between being abundant or rare, thus providing the facts about environmental factors driving microbial community dynamics. Patterns and processes in alpha- and beta-diversities and community assembly of bacterioplankton differ among different time intervals (short-, medium- and long-time intervals) and different subcommunities (abundant, conditionally rare and rare taxa) in a subtropical urban reservoir, demonstrating the importance of temporal scale and high-frequency sampling in microbial community ecology.

On the use of chemotaxonomy, a phytoplankton identification and quantification method based on pigment for quick surveys of subtropical reservoirs

Traditionally, composition and biomass of phytoplankton communities are determined by microscopy, but this method is time-consuming and so does not allow for high-frequency data acquisition across space and time. Pigment-based chemotaxonomy (CHEMTAX) is now widely applied to study of phytoplankton community structure on broader spatial and temporal scales of oceans, but the ability of this approach to provide estimates of phytoplankton assemblage in freshwater ecosystems is yet underdeveloped. To investigate the efficiency of the high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)-CHEMTAX in quantifying the different phytoplankton groups in inland freshwater, we present a comparison between phytoplankton pigment analyses by HPLC with CHEMTAX and microscopic counting of phytoplankton samples from four subtropical reservoirs in January and July 2014, respectively. The correlation between pigment and phytoplankton abundance detected by microscopy was stronger than that between pigment and phytoplankton biomass. The published marker pigments and their revised ratios can be used to describe phytoplankton abundances in a mixed community of freshwater phytoplankton, and pigment-based CHEMTAX can successfully describe the overall pattern of phytoplankton community dynamics during different seasons. The use of pigment-based CHEMTAX for quick surveys of phytoplankton communities can be recommended as a useful supplement or alternative tool to microscopy for freshwater ecosystem management.

Effects of different habitats on the bacterial community composition in the water and sediments of Lake Taihu, China

Bacterial communities are sensitive to environmental fluctuations, and a better understanding of the relationships between bacterial community distribution and complex environmental conditions is important for the remediation of lake ecosystems. In this study, bacterial communities from 7 water and 7 sediment samples in 3 different regions (east, the hydrophyte-dominated region; north, the transitional region; west, the highly polluted region) of Lake Taihu were investigated via high-throughput sequencing. The physicochemical characterization showed that there were obvious differences in the trophic statuses of the three lake regions, which were mainly due to the differences in pollutant concentration and hydrophyte coverage. The Shannon and Simpson values indicated that the diversity of bacterial communities in water was the highest in the eastern region, followed by the northern and western regions, while there was no significant difference in the bacterial community characteristics in sediments among lake regions. We found that the western lake region had the highest Cyanobacteria concentration (34.71%), suggesting that Cyanobacteria may have competitive advantages over the other bacterioplankton in water columns without plants. The abundances of Chlorobi detected in the water samples in the east (2.69%) and north (6.66%) were higher than those in the west because the high turbidity in the western lake region was unsuitable for the growth of Chlorobi. Nitrospirae (average 6.36%) and Chloroflexi (average 11.62%) were more common in the sediments than in the water of Lake Taihu, suggesting that the nutrient level of Lake Taihu sediment was higher than that of water bodies. Welch's t test revealed that there were significant differences in species abundance (such as Microcystis, Synechococcus, Flavobacterium, and hgcI_clade) among the different regions, except that the east was relatively similar to the north. Canonical correspondence analysis demonstrated that TN, TP, and DO showed significant effects on the relative abundance of the dominant bacterial genera in water, while TOC, TP, and TN were positively correlated with TOC, TP and TN. This study provides useful information for understanding the variation in the diversity of bacterial communities in different habitats of Lake Taihu.

Phytoplankton distribution characteristics and its relationship with bacterioplankton in Dianchi Lake

Phytoplankton and bacterioplankton perform important ecological functions in lake ecosystem. In this paper, the abundance and composition of phytoplankton and bacterioplankton at 13 sites of Dianchi lake during the wet and dry seasons were monitored, and the relationship between phytoplankton and bacterioplankton in this plateau lake was studied. Phytoplankton community structure analysis was carried out by ocular method, and bacterioplankton was investigated by high-throughput 16S rRNA gene Illumina sequencing. The relationship between phytoplankton and bacterioplankton was observed using redundancy analysis. The results showed that 87 species of phytoplankton belonging to 5 phyla and 29 genera were identified in Dianchi lake. Phytoplankton diversity and richness were higher in the wet season than those in the dry season. In the wet season, Cyanophyta was the dominant phylum whose density was 2.01 × 10⁸ cells/L, accounting for more than 90% of the total algae, then followed by Chlorophyta, Bacillariophyta, Chrysophyta, and Cryptophyta. The spatial distribution of phytoplankton in the wet season and dry seasons showed significant differences. In the dry season, the north-central part of Dianchi lake was dominated by Limnothrix redekei and Microcystis minutissima of Cyanophyta, while Pseudanabaena moniliformis and Coelosphaerium nagelianum of Cyanophyta mainly was dominated in the south of Dianchi lake. In the wet season, Microcystis minutissima of Cyanophyta was the dominant species all the area, while Limnothrix redekei of Cyanophyta was second dominant. Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes were the dominant phyla among bacterioplankton. The community structure of bacterioplankton was influenced by Cyanophyta and Bacillariophyta. Cyanophyta had a major influence on Pseudomonas, Acinetobacter of Proteobacteria, and Flavobacterium of Bacteroidetes. Bacillariophyta showed a strong correlation with Gemmobacter, Stenotrophomonas, and Aeromonas of Proteobacteria. Cyanophyta and Bacillariophyta produced the most significant impact on predicted functional genes of bacterioplankton, and the predicted functional genes of the samples were different in different seasons. Cell densities of Cyanophyta were positively related to metabolism-predicted functional genes of bacterioplankton. Bacillariophyta and Cryptophyta had an impact on most of the cellular processes and signaling predicted functional genes. Bacterioplankton-predicted functional gene information storage and processing were significantly affected by cell densities of Chlorophyta. Therefore, the analysis of the phytoplankton community and the bacterioplankton-predicted functional gene in Dianchi lake exerts a great significance in revealing the ecosystem function of plateau lakes and harmful algal bloom control.

Seasonal Water Level Fluctuation and Concomitant Change of Nutrients Shift Microeukaryotic Communities in a Shallow Lake

Seasonal water level fluctuations (WLFs) impose dramatic influences on lake ecosystems. The influences of WLFs have been well studied for many lake biotas but the microeukaryotic community remains one of the least-explored features. This study employed high-throughput 18S rRNA gene sequencing to investigate the spatiotemporal patterns of microeukaryotic communities in the dry and wet seasons with concomitant change of nutrients in Poyang Lake, which experiences huge seasonal WLFs. The results showed that the dry season and wet season had distinct microeukaryotic community compositions and structures. In the dry season, Ciliophora (13.86–40.98%) and Cryptomonas (3.69–18.64%) were the dominant taxa, and the relative abundance of these taxa were significant higher in the dry season than wet season. Ochrophyta (6.88–45.67%) and Chlorophyta (6.31–22.10%) was the dominant taxa of microeukaryotic communities in the wet season. The seasonal variation of microeukaryotic communities was strongly correlated to seasonal nutrient variations. Microeukaryotic communities responded significantly to dissolved organic carbon, total nitrogen, nitrate, and soluble reactive phosphorus in the dry season, and correlated to nitrate and total phosphorus in the wet season. The microeukaryotic community showed different modular structures in two seasons, and nutrient variations were the key factors influencing seasonal variations of the modular structures. Moreover, microeukaryotic community networks based on different seasons indicated that the microeukaryotic community co-occurrence patterns were not constant but varied largely associating with the nitrogen and phosphorus variations under the effects of WLFs. Our results are important for understanding how microeukaryotic communities respond to nutrient variation under seasonal water level fluctuation.

Investigation of an Elevational Gradient Reveals Strong Differences Between Bacterial and Eukaryotic Communities Coinhabiting Nepenthes Phytotelmata

Elevation is an important determinant of ecological community composition. It integrates several abiotic features and leads to strong, repeatable patterns of community structure, including changes in the abundance and richness of numerous taxa. However, the influence of elevational gradients on microbes is understudied relative to plants and animals. To compare the influence of elevation on multiple taxa simultaneously, we sampled phytotelm communities within a tropical pitcher plant (Nepenthes mindanaoensis) along a gradient from 400 to 1200 m a.s.l. We use a combination of metabarcoding and physical counts to assess diversity and richness of bacteria, micro-eukaryotes, and arthropods, and compare the effect of elevation on community structure to that of regulation by a number of plant factors. Patterns of community structure differed between bacteria and eukaryotes, despite their living together in the same aquatic microhabitats. Elevation influences community composition of eukaryotes to a significantly greater degree than it does bacteria. When examining pitcher characteristics, pitcher dimorphism has an effect on eukaryotes but not bacteria, while variation in pH levels strongly influences both taxa. Consistent with previous ecological studies, arthropod abundance in phytotelmata decreases with elevation, but some patterns of abundance differ between living inquilines and prey.

Community composition and correlations between bacteria and algae within epiphytic biofilms on submerged macrophytes in a plateau lake, southwest China

Epiphytic biofilms are complex matrix-enclosed communities comprising large numbers of bacteria and algae, which play an important role in the biogeochemical cycles in aquatic systems. However, little is known about the correlations that occur between these communities or the relative impact of environmental factors on their composition. In this study, epiphytic biofilms on three different aquatic plants were sampled in a typical plateau lake (Caohai, southwest China) in July and November of 2018. Bacterial diversity was assessed using Miseq sequencing approaches and algal communities were assessed using light microscopy. Gammaproteobacteria (54.64%), Bacteroidetes (17.50%) and Firmicutes (13.99%) were the dominant bacterial taxa and Chlorophyta (47.62%), Bacillariophyta (28.57%) and Euglenophyta (19.05%) were the dominant algae. The alpha diversity values of the epiphytic bacterial and algal communities were greater during the macrophyte decline period (November) than during the growth period (July). Microbial community composition was significantly affected by abiotic factors (water temperature, NH₄⁺, pH or TP) and biotic factors (algae or bacteria). Interestingly, in July and November, the epiphytic algal community dissimilarity was stronger than that observed for bacterial community dissimilarity, suggesting that bacterial community dissimilarity may increase more slowly with environmental change than algal community dissimilarity. Furthermore, association network analysis revealed complex correlations between algal biomass and bacteria phylotype, and that 67.83% of correlations were positive and 32.17% were negative. This may indicate that facilitative correlations between algae and bacteria are predominant in epiphytic biofilms. These results provide new information on algal-bacterial correlations as well as the possible mechanisms that drive variations in the microbial community in epiphytic biofilms in freshwater lakes.

Correlation between specific groups of heterotrophic bacteria and microcystin biodegradation in freshwater bodies of central Europe

Microcystins produced by several toxic cyanobacterial strains constitute an important problem for public health. Bacterial degradation of these hepatotoxins may play an important role in natural ecosystems, however the nature of the process is very poorly understood. The aim of our study was to investigate the possible interactions between cyanotoxin producers and degraders. Samples collected from 24 water bodies in western Poland were analysed to determine the chemo-physical parameters, phytoplankton content, bacterial community structure and microcystin-biodegradation potency. A redundancy analysis identified a positive correlation between the capacity of a community to degrade microcystin LR (MC-LR) and temperature, pH, chlorophyll a concentration and the abundance of MC-producers. The relative abundance of classes F38, TM7-3 and the order WCHB1-81c (Actinobacteria) was significantly higher in the lakes with MC-biodegradation potency. Some specific bacterial genera belonging to Acidobacteria, Chloroflexi, Gemmatimonadetes, Firmicutes and TM7 were closely correlated with the occurrence of Microcystis spp. Furthermore, the MC biodegradation process was connected with the same bacterial groups. Thus, our approach allowed us to provide a broader picture of some specific relations between microcystin producers and potential microcystin degraders. A more comprehensive analysis of the existing correlations may be helpful in our understanding of natural mechanisms of MC elimination using bacteria such as MC-degraders.

Hysteretic response of Microbial Eukaryotic Communities to Gradually Decreased Nutrient Concentrations in Eutrophic Water

External environments to microbial eukaryotic communities often change gradually with time. However, whether the responses of microbial eukaryotic communities to these gradually changed environments are continuous or hysteretic and the mechanisms underlying these responses are largely unknown. Here, we used a microcosm to investigate the temporal variation of microbial eukaryotic communities with the gradually decreased nutrient concentrations (nitrogen and phosphorus). We found the differences of microbial eukaryotic community composition and species richness between the control and treatment groups were low during the days 0 to 12, although the nutrient concentrations decreased rapidly during this period in treatment group. However, these differences were clear during the days 14 to 18, although the nutrient concentrations decreased slowly during this period in treatment group. The mechanisms for these results are that the strong homogenous selection (perhaps due to the biotic factors) during the days 8 to 10 in treatment group might enhance the stability of microbial eukaryotic communities. However, the continuously decreased nutrient concentrations weakened the homogenous selection and promoted the strength of environmental filtering, and therefore resulted in the distinct change of microbial eukaryotic communities during the days 14 to 18 in treatment group. Fungi, Chlorophyta and Chrysophyta which associated with the nutrient removal played important roles in this hysteretic change of microbial eukaryotic communities. Overall, our findings suggest that disentangling the non-linear response of communities to gradual environmental changes is essential for understanding ecosystem restoration and degradation in future.

Characteristics of microbial eukaryotic community recovery in eutrophic water by using ecological floating beds

Ecological floating beds can rapidly remove nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus) from eutrophic water, but we still know little about whether this process can simultaneously recover microbial eukaryotic communities. To fill this gap, planktonic microbial eukaryotic communities were investigated using 18S rRNA high-throughput gene sequencing during nutrient removal by floating beds of Canna indica L. We found that nutrient concentrations were high in both the control and treatment groups during period 1 (days 0-5) but rapidly decreased in the treatment group during period 2 (days 6-9) and period 3 (days 10-18). However, the microbial eukaryotic species richness and community compositions were similar between the control and treatment groups during periods 1 and 2 but showed small differences during period 3. The microbial eukaryotic co-occurrence networks between the control and treatment groups also showed similar degree centrality and interconnected eukaryotic members. We found that some abundant fungi species significantly responded to nutrient variations, but a large number of abundant ciliates were insensitive to nutrient removal. Our findings suggest that ecological floating beds can rapidly remove nutrients in eutrophic waters but that it is difficult to quickly and simultaneously improve microbial eukaryotic communities. This result reveals the critical influence of nutrient pollution on aquatic ecosystems and therefore on long-term and comprehensive aquatic habitat restoration, as aquatic macrophyte recoveries should be conducted after nutrient controls have been implemented.

Changing environmental conditions underpin long-term patterns of phytoplankton in a freshwater reservoir

Environmental changes can exert strong pressure on freshwater biota and lead to unwanted alterations of local communities and deterioration of ecosystem services. Disentangling the links between environmental and community changes is, therefore, essential to understand and predict the impact of human activities on freshwater ecosystems. This is particularly relevant for man-made freshwater reservoirs that represent a nexus between anthropogenic, environmental, and biotic effects. Reservoir food webs depend strongly on phytoplankton dynamics, which are affected by abiotic conditions, nutrient availability and grazing pressure by zooplankton. We studied the effects of relevant environmental drivers (hydrochemistry, hydrodynamics and zooplankton) on the composition, diversity and community stability of main morpho-functional phytoplankton groups over 32 years in the Římov Reservoir (Czech Republic). Environmental conditions in the reservoir are characterised by three distinct periods (1983-89, 1990-99, and 2000-14) defined by shifts and breakpoints in temporal trends in reservoir hydrochemistry and hydraulic conditions, and we examined if and how phytoplankton responded to these abrupt changes. We found significant differences in phytoplankton composition among the three periods. Phytoplankton underwent a substantial compositional shift towards a dominance of pennate diatoms. Time-lag analysis of dissimilarity in phytoplankton composition revealed higher and stochastic annual variations until 1999, followed by a lower variability and divergence in phytoplankton composition in subsequent years. Changes in overall phytoplankton assemblage and most abundant morpho-functional phytoplankton groups were driven mainly by hydrochemical (total nitrogen) and hydrodynamic variables (inflow rate, surface level and mixing depth) and less by zooplankton dynamics. These results suggest that phytoplankton are driven primarily by nutrient input and water regime, both of which can be appropriately managed to support valuable ecosystem services provided by phytoplankton in freshwater reservoirs.

18S rRNA gene sequencing reveals significant influence of anthropogenic effects on microeukaryote diversity and composition along a river-to-estuary gradient ecosystem

Microeukaryotes play key roles in the structure and functioning of lotic ecosystems; however, little is known about the relative importance of the processes that drive planktonic microeukaryotic biogeography in rivers, especially the effects of anthropogenic inputs (e.g., wastewater discharge and pesticide and fertilizer use) on the taxonomic and functional diversity of microeukaryotes. Herein 18S ribosomal RNA sequencing was used to examine the assembly of microeukaryotes in samples from Xiaoqing River, a mid-sized river in north China that runs through urban and agricultural areas and then discharges into the Bohai Sea. We found that diversity of microeukaryote declined obviously due to the excessive disturbance of the urban and agricultural activities in the midstream of the river. Our results support the concept that species sorting caused by local pollution can largely determine microeukaryotic community structure when significant environmental gradients exist in polluted running-water ecosystems and that compositional dissimilarity increased with increases in the Euclidean distance of environmental variables. Variation of microeukaryotic diversity was mainly determined by changes in levels of nutrients, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, and salinity and they can affect the rare subcommunities significantly. Furthermore, zooplankton were dominated in rare taxa, meanwhile phytoplankton was composed by the abundant taxa mainly. These findings confirmed the dynamic character of riverine ecosystems and the significance of human activities in shaping microeukaryote diversity in rivers.

Distinct Assembly Mechanisms Underlie Similar Biogeographic Patterns of Rare and Abundant Bacterioplankton in Cascade Reservoirs of a Large River

Bacterioplankton communities commonly consist of few highly abundant species and a large number of rare species that play key roles in biogeochemical cycles of aquatic ecosystems. However, little is known about the biogeographic assemblies of these communities, especially in large rivers suffering from cascade dam regulation. Here, we used a 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing approach to investigate the biogeographic patterns and underlying assembly mechanisms of abundant and rare bacterioplankton taxa in cascade reservoirs of the Jinsha River in China. The results revealed species loss of bacterioplankton due to dam construction, which was more significant for rare taxa than for abundant ones. The distributions of abundant and rare taxa exhibited similar spatial and temporal patterns, which were significantly distinct between winter and summer and between upstream and downstream reservoirs. Both spatial (dispersal-related process) and environmental (selection process) factors seemed to together govern the assembly and biogeography of abundant and rare taxa, although both factors explained only a small fraction of variation in the rare taxa. More importantly, environmental factors explained more community variation in abundant sub-community than that in rare sub-community. Co-occurrence network analysis revealed that abundant species with closer interactions were more often located in a central position of the network compared with rare species. Nevertheless, half of the keystone species were rare species and may play important roles in maintaining the network stability. Overall, these findings indicate that distinct assembly mechanisms underlie the similar biogeography of rare and abundant bacteria in cascade reservoirs of a large river.

Geographical Patterns of Algal Communities Associated with Different Urban Lakes in China

Urban lakes play an important role in drainage and water storage, regulating urban microclimate conditions, supplying groundwater, and meeting citizens' recreational needs. However, geographical patterns of algal communities associated with urban lakes from a large scale are still unclear. In the present work, the geographical variation of algal communities and water quality parameters in different urban lakes in China were determined. The water quality parameters were examined in the samples collected from north, central, south, and coastal economic zones in China. The results suggested that significant differences in water quality were observed among different geographical distribution of urban lakes. The highest total phosphorus (TP)(0.21 mg/L) and total nitrogen (TN) (3.84 mg/L) concentrations were found in XinHaiHu (XHH) lake, it also showed highest the nitrate nitrogen (NO3--N) (0.39 mg/L),total organic carbon(TOC) (9.77 mg/L), and COD Mn (9.01 mg/L) concentrations among all samples. Environmental and geographic factors also cause large differences in algal cell concentration in different urban lakes, which ranged from 4,700×104 to 247,800 ×104cell/L. Through light microscopy, 6 phyla were identified, which includes Chlorophyta, Bacillariophyta, Cyanophyta, Dinophyta, Euglenophyta, and Cryptophyta. Meanwhile, the heat map with the total 63 algal community composition at the genus level profile different urban lakes community structures are clearly distinguishable. Further analyses showed that the dominant genera were Limnothrixsp., Synedra sp., Cyclotella sp., Nephrocytium sp., Melosirasp., and Scenedesmussp. among all samples. The integrated network analysis indicated that the highly connected taxa (hub) were Fragilariasp.,Scenedesmus sp., and Stephanodiscus sp. The water quality parameters of NO3--N and NH4+-N had significant impacts on the structural composition of the algal community. Additionally, RDA further revealed distinct algal communities in the different urban lakes, and were influenced by NO2--N, Fe, and algal cell concentrations. In summary, these results demonstrate that the pattern of algal communities are highly correlated with geographic location and water quality on a large scale, and these results also give us further understanding of the complex algal communities and effectively managing eutrophication of urban lakes.

Responses of zooplankton body size and community trophic structure to temperature change in a subtropical reservoir

Understanding the effects of global warming on trait variation and trophic structure is a crucial challenge in the 21st century. However, there is a lack of general patterns that can be used to predict trait variation and community trophic structure under the ongoing environmental change. We investigated the responses of body size and community trophic structure of zooplankton to climate related factors (e.g., temperature). Isotopic niche breadth was applied to investigate the community trophic structure across a 1-year study from a subtropical reservoir (Tingxi Reservoir) in southeastern China. Body size and community isotopic niche breadth of zooplankton were larger during water mixing than stratification periods and correlated significantly with water temperature change along the time series. The contributions of intra- and intertaxonomic components to body size and community trophic structure variation showed significant relationships with the temperature change going from the mixing to stratification periods. Water temperature imposed direct effect on body size, while direct and indirect effect on the community trophic structure of zooplankton occurred through trophic redundancy along time series. Water temperature and community properties (e.g., body size, trophic redundancy, or trophic interaction) showed complex interactions and integrated to influence community trophic structure of zooplankton. Our results can expand the knowledge of how elevated temperature will alter individual trait and community trophic structure under future climate change.

Response of the eukaryotic plankton community to the cyanobacterial biomass cycle over 6 years in two subtropical reservoirs

Although it is widely recognized that cyanobacterial blooms have substantial influence on the plankton community in general, their correlations with the whole community of eukaryotic plankton at longer time scales remain largely unknown. Here, we investigated the temporal dynamics of eukaryotic plankton communities in two subtropical reservoirs over a 6-year period (2010–2015) following one cyanobacterial biomass cycle—the cyanobacterial bloom (middle 2010), cyanobacteria decrease (late 2010–early 2011), non-bloom (2011–2014), cyanobacteria increase, and second bloom (late 2014–2015). The eukaryotic community succession that strongly correlated with this cyanobacterial biomass cycle was divided into four periods, and each period had distinct characteristics in cyanobacterial biomass and environments in both reservoirs. Integrated co-occurrence networks of eukaryotic plankton based on the whole study period revealed that the cyanobacterial biomass had remarkably high network centralities, and the eukaryotic OTUs that had stronger correlations with the cyanobacterial biomass exhibited higher centralities. The integrated networks were also modularly responded to different eukaryotic succession periods, and therefore correlated with the cyanobacterial biomass cycle. Moreover, sub-networks based on the different eukaryotic succession periods indicated that the eukaryotic co-occurrence patterns were not constant but varied largely associating with the cyanobacterial biomass. Based on these long-term observations, our results reveal that the cyanobacterial biomass cycle created distinct niches between persistent bloom, non-bloom, decrease and increase of cyanobacteria, and therefore associated with distinct eukaryotic plankton patterns. Our results have important implications for understanding how complex aquatic plankton communities respond to cyanobacterial blooms under the changing environments.

Community dynamics of free-living and particle-attached bacteria following a reservoir Microcystis bloom

The composition of microbial communities can vary at the microspatial scale between free-living (FL) and particle-attached (PA) niches. However, it remains unclear how FL and PA bacterial communities respond to cyanobacterial blooms across water depths. Here, we examined the community dynamics of the FL (0.2-3 μm) and PA (>3 μm) bacterioplankton based on 16S rRNA gene high-throughput sequencing in a subtropical stratified reservoir under Microcystis aeruginosa bloom and non-bloom conditions. Both FL and PA bacterioplankton communities showed different responses in alpha- and beta-diversities to the bloom, suggesting the idea that the responses of bacterial community could depend on lifestyle. Specifically, abundant PA subcommunities showed a greater variation between bloom and non-bloom groups than abundant FL ones. In contrast, rare FL subcommunities exhibited a stronger response to water depth than rare PA ones. Furthermore, the rare taxa exhibited a preference for PA status, shaped and stimulated by the M. aeruginosa bloom. Our analyses also showed that PA bacterial communities were generally more diverse and appeared to be more responsive to routinely measured environmental variables than FL bacteria. Microcystis blooms had a facilitative influence on specific bacteria by mediating the transitions from free-living to particle-attached lifestyles. Altogether, these findings highlight the importance of bacterial lifestyle and abundance in understanding the dynamics of microbial community in cyanobacterial bloom aquatic ecosystem.

Temporal variation in zooplankton and phytoplankton community species composition and the affecting factors in Lake Taihu-a large freshwater lake in China

Monitoring diverse components of aquatic ecosystems is vital for elucidation of diversity dynamics and processes, which alter freshwater ecosystems, but such studies are seldom conducted. Phytoplankton and zooplankton are integral components which play indispensable parts in the structure and ecological service function of water bodies. However, few studies were made on how zooplankton and phytoplankton community may respond simultaneously to change of circumstance and their mutual relationship. Therefore, we researched synchronously the phytoplankton communities as well as zooplankton communities based on monthly monitoring data from September 2011 to August 2012 in heavily polluted areas and researched their responses to variation in environmental parameters and their mutual relationship. As indicated by Time-lag analysis (TLA), the long-term dynamics of phytoplankton and zooplankton were undergoing directional variations, what's more, there exists significant seasonal variations of phytoplankton and zooplankton communities as indicated by Non-Metric Multidimensional scaling (NMDS) methods. Also, Redundancy Analysis (RDA) demonstrated that environmental indicators together accounted for 25.6% and 50.1% variance of phytoplankton and zooplankton, respectively, indicating that environmental variations affected significantly on the temporal dynamics of phytoplankton as well as zooplankton communities. What's more, variance partioning suggested that the major environmental factors influencing variation structures of zooplankton communities were water temperature, concentration of nitrogen, revealing the dominating driving mechanism which shaped the communities of zooplankton. It was also found that there was significant synchronization between zooplankton biomass and phytoplankton biomass (expressed as Chl-a concentration), which suggested that zooplankton respond to changes in dynamic structure of phytoplankton community and can initiate a decrease in phytoplankton biomass through grazing in a few months.

The effects of contemporary selection and dispersal limitation on the community assembly of acidophilic microalgae

Extremophilic microalgae are primary producers in acidic habitats, such as volcanic sites and acid mine drainages, and play a central role in biogeochemical cycles. Yet, basic knowledge about their species composition and community assembly is lacking. Here, we begin to fill this knowledge gap by performing the first large-scale survey of microalgal diversity in acidic geothermal sites across the West Pacific Island Chain. We collected 72 environmental samples in 12 geothermal sites, measured temperature and pH, and performed rbcL amplicon-based 454 pyrosequencing. Using these data, we estimated the diversity of microalgal species, and then examined the relative contribution of contemporary selection (i.e., local environmental variables) and dispersal limitation on the assembly of these communities. A species delimitation analysis uncovered seven major microalgae (four red, two green, and one diatom) and higher species diversity than previously appreciated. A distance-based redundancy analysis with variation partitioning revealed that dispersal limitation has a greater influence on the community assembly of microalgae than contemporary selection. Consistent with this finding, community similarity among the sampled sites decayed more quickly over geographical distance than differences in environmental factors. Our work paves the way for future studies to understand the ecology and biogeography of microalgae in extreme habitats.

The antibiotic resistome of free-living and particle-attached bacteria under a reservoir cyanobacterial bloom

In freshwater systems, both antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and cyanobacterial blooms attract global public health concern. Cyanobacterial blooms can greatly impact bacterial taxonomic communities, but very little is known about the influence of the blooms on antibiotic resistance functional community. In this study, the ARGs in both free-living (FL) and particle-attached (PA) bacteria under bloom and non-bloom conditions were simultaneously investigated in a subtropical reservoir using high-throughput approaches. In total, 145 ARGs and 9 mobile genetic elements (MGEs) were detected. The most diverse and dominant of which (68.93%) were multidrug resistance genes and efflux pump mechanism. The richness of ARGs in both FL and PA bacteria was significantly lower during the bloom period compared with non-bloom period. The abundance of ARGs in FL bacteria was significantly lower under bloom condition than in the non-bloom period, but the abundance of ARGs in PA bacteria stayed constant. More importantly, the resistant functional community in PA bacteria was more strongly influenced by the cyanobacterial bloom than in the FL bacteria, although >96% ARGs were shared in both FL and PA bacteria or both bloom and non-bloom periods. We also compared the community compositions between taxonomy and function, and found antibiotic resistant communities were highly variable and exhibited lower similarity between bloom and non-bloom periods than seen in the taxonomic composition, with an exception of FL bacteria. Altogether, cyanobacterial blooms appear to have stronger inhibitory effect on ARG abundance in FL bacteria, and stronger influence on antibiotic resistant community composition in PA bacteria. Our results further suggested that both neutral and selective processes interactively affected the ARG composition dynamics of the FL and PA bacteria. However, the antibiotic resistant community of FL bacteria exhibited a higher level of temporal stochasticity following the bloom event than PA bacteria. Therefore, we emphasized the bacterial lifestyles as an important mechanism, giving rise to different responses of antibiotic resistant community to the cyanobacterial bloom.

Factors associated with blooms of cyanobacteria in a large shallow lake, China

BACKGROUND

Eutrophication of freshwater systems can result in blooms of phytoplankton, in many cases cyanobacteria. This can lead to shifts in structure and functions of phytoplankton communities adversely affecting the quality of drinking water sources, which in turn impairs public health. Relationships between structures of phytoplankton communities and concentrations of the toxicant, microcystin-leucine-arginine (MC-LR), have not been well examined in large shallow lakes. The present study investigated phytoplankton communities at seven locations from January to December of 2015 in Tai Lake, and relationships between structures and diversities of phytoplankton communities and water quality parameters, including concentrations of MC-LR and metals, were analyzed.

RESULTS

A total of 124 taxa of phytoplankton were observed, and the predominant taxa were Microcystis sp. and Dolichospermum flos-aquae of Cyanophyta and Planctonema sp. of Chlorophyta. The greatest diversities of phytoplankton communities, as indicated by species richness, Simpson, Shannon-Wiener, the Berger and Parker, and the Pielou evenness indices, were observed in spring. Furthermore, productivity of phytoplankton was significantly and negatively correlated with diversities. These results demonstrated that Simpson, Shannon-Wiener, the Berger and Parker, and the Pielou evenness indices of phytoplankton communities were significantly related to trophic status and overall primary productivity in Tai Lake. In addition, temperature of surface water, pH, permanganate index, biochemical oxygen demand, total phosphorus, arsenic, total nitrogen/total phosphorous ratio, and MC-LR were the main factors associated with structures of phytoplankton communities in Tai Lake.

CONCLUSION

The present study provided helpful information on phytoplankton community structure and diversity in Tai Lake from January to December of 2015. Our findings demonstrated that Simpson, Shannon-Wiener, the Berger and Parker, and the Pielou evenness indices could be used to assess and monitor for status and trends in water quality of Tai Lake. In addition, MC-LR was one of the main factors associated with structures of phytoplankton communities in Tai Lake. The findings may help to address important ecological questions about the impact of a changing environment on biodiversity of lake ecosystems and the control of algae bloom. Further studies are needed to explore the relationship between MC-LR and phytoplankton communities in the laboratory.

Community assembly processes underlying phytoplankton and bacterioplankton across a hydrologic change in a human-impacted river

Although the influence of microbial community assembly processes on aquatic ecosystem function and biodiversity is well known, the processes that govern planktonic communities in human-impacted rivers remain largely unstudied. Here, we used multivariate statistics and a null model approach to test the hypothesis that environmental conditions and obstructed dispersal opportunities, dictate a deterministic community assembly for phytoplankton and bacterioplankton across contrasting hydrographic conditions in a subtropical mid-sized river (Jiulong River, southeast China). Variation partitioning analysis showed that the explanatory power of local environmental variables was larger than that of the spatial variables for both plankton communities during the dry season. During the wet season, phytoplankton community variation was mainly explained by local environmental variables, whereas the variance in bacterioplankton was explained by both environmental and spatial predictors. The null model based on Raup-Crick coefficients for both planktonic groups suggested little evidences of the stochastic processes involving dispersal and random distribution. Our results showed that hydrological change and landscape structure act together to cause divergence in communities along the river channel, thereby dictating a deterministic assembly and that selection exceeds dispersal limitation during the dry season. Therefore, to protect the ecological integrity of human-impacted rivers, watershed managers should not only consider local environmental conditions but also dispersal routes to account for the effect of regional species pool on local communities.

Planktonic fungal community structures and their relationship to water quality in the Danjiangkou Reservoir, China

Planktonic fungi are important components of aquatic ecosystems, and analyses of their community composition and function have far-reaching significance for the ecological management and maintenance of reservoir environments. However, few studies have investigated the composition, distribution, and function of planktonic fungi in reservoir ecosystems and their relationship with water quality. Here, the composition of the planktonic fungal community in the surface water layer of the Danjiangkou Reservoir is investigated using Illumina MiSeq sequencing. According to the results, the reservoir community is primarily composed of 7 phyla, including Ascomycota, Rozellomycota, Basidiomycota, Chytridiomycota, and Zygomycota, comprising 294 genera, demonstrating the rich diversity of this community. Redundancy analysis (RDA) of the planktonic fungal community and environmental factors showed dissolved oxygen (DO), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total nitrogen (TN), chlorophyll a (Chl a), and permanganate (CODMn) to be important factors influencing the distribution of planktonic fungi. Spearman correlation analysis of the planktonic fungal community composition and diversity indices with physical and chemical water quality parameters showed that the impacts of TN, COD and DO were the most significant. The results of this study on the planktonic fungal community in the Danjiangkou Reservoir area using high-throughput sequencing revealed that the community is sensitive to water quality parameters. This result provides a reference for studying the composition and distribution of the planktonic fungal community in Danjiangkou Reservoir and its role in the biogeochemical cycle.
