Aggregation Kinetics of Hematite Particles in the Presence of Outer Membrane Cytochrome OmcA of Shewanella oneidenesis MR-1

Nanoscale surface defects of goethite governing DNA adsorption process and formation of the Goethite-DNA conjugates

In urbanized areas, extracellular DNA (exDNA) is suspected of carrying genes with undesirable traits like virulence genes (VGs) or antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), which can spread through horizontal gene transfer (HGT). Hence, it is crucial to develop novel approaches for the mitigation of exDNA in the environment. Our research explores the role of goethite, a common iron mineral with high adsorption capabilities, in exDNA adsorption processes. We compare well-crystalline, semi-crystalline, and nano goethites with varying particle sizes to achieve various specific surface areas (SSAs) (18.7-161.6 m2/g) and porosities. We conducted batch adsorption experiments using DNA molecules of varying chain lengths (DNA sizes: <11 Kb, <6 Kb, and <3 Kb) and assessed the impact of Ca2+ and biomacromolecules on the adsorption efficacy and mechanisms. Results show that porosity and pore structure significantly influence DNA adsorption capacity. Goethite with well-developed meso- and macroporosity demonstrated enhanced DNA adsorption. The accumulation of DNA on the goethite interface led to substantial aggregation in the system, thus the formation of DNA-goethite conjugates, indicating the bridging between mineral particles. DNA chain length, the presence of Ca2+, and the biomacromolecule matrix also affected the adsorption capacity and mechanism. Interactions between DNA and positively charged biomacromolecules or Ca2+ led to DNA compaction, allowing greater DNA accumulation in pores. However, a high concentration of biomacromolecules led to the saturation of the goethite surface, inhibiting DNA adsorption. AFM imaging of goethite particles after adsorption suggested the formation of the DNA multilayer. The study advances understanding of the environmental behavior of exDNA and its interaction with iron oxyhydroxides, offering insights into developing more effective methods for ARGs removal in wastewater treatment plants. By manipulating the textural properties of goethite, it's possible to enhance exDNA removal, potentially reducing the spread of biocontamination in urban and industrial environments.

Combined exposure of nano-titanium dioxide and polystyrene nanoplastics exacerbate oxidative stress-induced liver injury in mice by regulating the Keap-1/Nrf2/ARE pathway

It is well known that polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NaP) and nano-titanium dioxide (TiO2 NPs) are frequently co-appeared in daily life and can cause liver injury when they accumulate in the liver. Nonetheless, the combined toxicological impacts and potential molecular mechanisms of PS-NaP and TiO2 NPs in the hepatic system have not been revealed. Thus, we conducted experiments on C57BL/6 mice exposed to PS-NaP or/and TiO2 NPs for 4 weeks. The findings suggested that PS-NaP and TiO2 NPs co-exposed significantly altered the hepatic function parameters, levels of antioxidant-related enzymes and genes expression of Keap-1/Nrf2/ARE signaling pathway, as well as significantly increased the hepatic Ti contents, aggravated hepatic pathological and oxidative stress (OS) damage compared with individual exposure to PS-NaP or TiO2 NPs. Using N-Acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC), an OS inhibitor, we further demonstrated that OS played a pivotal role in coexposure-induced liver injury. NAC reduced the levels of OS in mice, which mitigated co-exposure-induced liver injury. Taken together, we proposed that PS-NaP and TiO2 NPs co-exposed activated the Keap-1, then inhibited the recognition of Nrf2 and ARE, consequently exacerbated liver injury. These findings shed light on the co-toxicity and potential mechanism of nanoplastics and nanoparticles, which informed the risk assessment of human exposure to environmental pollutants.

A Critical Look at Colloid Generation, Stability, and Transport in Redox-Dynamic Environments: Challenges and Perspectives

Colloid generation, stability, and transport are important processes that can significantly influence the fate and transport of nutrients and contaminants in environmental systems. Here, we critically review the existing literature on colloids in redox-dynamic environments and summarize the current state of knowledge regarding the mechanisms of colloid generation and the chemical controls over colloidal behavior in such environments. We also identify critical gaps, such as the lack of universally accepted cross-discipline definition and modeling infrastructure that hamper an in-depth understanding of colloid generation, behavior, and transport potential. We propose to go beyond a size-based operational definition of colloids and consider the functional differences between colloids and dissolved species. We argue that to predict colloidal transport in redox-dynamic environments, more empirical data are needed to parametrize and validate models. We propose that colloids are critical components of element budgets in redox-dynamic systems and must urgently be considered in field as well as lab experiments and reactive transport models. We intend to bring further clarity and openness in reporting colloidal measurements and fate to improve consistency. Additionally, we suggest a methodological toolbox for examining impacts of redox dynamics on colloids in field and lab experiments.

A Meta-Analysis to Revisit the Property-Aggregation Relationships of Carbon Nanomaterials: Experimental Observations versus Predictions of the DLVO Theory

Contradicting relationships between physicochemical properties of nanomaterials (e.g., size and ζ-potential) and their aggregation behavior have been constantly reported in previous literature, and such contradictions deviate from the predictions of the classic Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) theory. To resolve such controversies, in this work, we employed a meta-analytic approach to synthesize the data from 46 individual studies reporting the critical coagulation concentration (CCC) of two carbon nanomaterials, namely, graphene oxide (GO) and carbon nanotube (CNT). The correlations between CCC and material physicochemical properties (i.e., size, ζ-potential, and surface functionalities) were examined and compared to the theoretical predictions. Results showed that the CCC of electrostatically stabilized carbon nanomaterials increased with decreasing nanomaterial size when their hydrodynamic sizes were smaller than ca. 200 nm. This is qualitatively consistent with the prediction of the DLVO theory but with a smaller threshold size than the predicted 2 μm. Above the threshold size, the material ζ-potential can be correlated to CCC for nanomaterials with moderate/low surface charge, in agreement with the DLVO theory. The correlation was not observed for highly charged nanomaterials because of their underestimated surface potential by the ζ-potential. Furthermore, a correlation between the C/O ratio and CCC was observed, where a lower C/O ratio resulted in a higher CCC. Overall, our findings rationalized the inconsistency between experimental observation and theoretical prediction and provided essential insights into the aggregation behavior of nanomaterials in water, which could facilitate their rational design.

Putting the electro-bugs to work: A systematic review of 22 years of advances in bio-electrochemical systems and the parameters governing their performance

Wastewater treatment using bioelectrochemical systems (BESs) can be considered as a technology finding application in versatile areas such as for renewable energy production and simultaneous reducing environmental problems, biosensors, and bioelectrosynthesis. This review paper reports and critically discusses the challenges, and advances in bio-electrochemical studies in the 21st century. To sum and critically analyze the strides of the last 20+ years on the topic, this study first provides a comprehensive analysis on the structure, performance, and application of BESs, which include Microbial Fuel Cells (MFCs), Microbial Electrolysis Cells (MECs) and Microbial Desalination Cells (MDCs). We focus on the effect of various parameters, such as electroactive microbial community structure, electrode material, configuration of bioreactors, anode unit volume, membrane type, initial COD, co-substrates and the nature of the input wastewater in treatment process and the amount of energy and fuel production, with the purpose of showcasing the modes of operation as a guide for future studies. The results of this review show that the BES have great potential in reducing environmental pollution, purifying saltwater, and producing energy and fuel. At a larger scale, it aspires to facilitate the path of achieving sustainable development and practical application of BES in real-world scenarios.

The aggregation of natural inorganic colloids in aqueous environment: A review

Natural inorganic colloids (NICs) are the most common and dominant existence in the ecosystem, with high concentration and wide variety. In spite of the low toxicity, they can alter activity and mobility of hazardous engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) through different interactions, which warrants the necessity to understand and predict the fate and transport of NICs in aquatic ecosystems. Here, this review summarized NICs properties and behaviors, interaction mechanisms and environmental factors at the first time. Various representative NICs and their physicochemical properties were introduced across the board. Then, the aggregation and sedimentation behaviors were discussed systematically, mainly concerning the heteroaggregation between NICs and ENPs. To speculate their fate and elucidate the corresponding mechanisms, the classical Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) and extended DLVO (X-DLVO) theories were focused. Furthermore, a range of intrinsic and extrinsic factors was presented in different perspective. Last but not the least, this paper pointed out theoretical and analytical gaps in current researches, and put forward suggestions for further research, aiming to provide a more comprehensive and original perspective in the fields of natural occurring colloids.

Growth and genome-based insights of Fe(III) reduction of the high-temperature and NaCl-tolerant Shewanella xiamenensis from Changqing oilfield of China

Introduction

A facultative anaerobe bacterium Shewanella xiamenensis CQ-Y1 was isolated from the wastewater of Changqing oilfield in Shaanxi Province of China. Shewanella is the important dissimilatory metal-reducing bacteria. It exhibited a well potential application in biodegradation and bioremediation.

Methods

Genome sequencing, assembling and functional annotation were conducted to explore the genome information of CQ-Y1. The effect of temperatures and NaCl concentrations on the CQ-Y1 growth and Fe(III) reduction were investigated by UV visible spectrophotometry, SEM and XRD.

Results

Genomic analysis revealed its complete genome was a circular chromosome of 4,710,887 bp with a GC content of 46.50% and 4,110 CDSs genes, 86 tRNAs and 26 rRNAs. It contains genes encoding for Na⁺/H⁺ antiporter, K⁺/Cl^- transporter, heat shock protein associated with NaCl and high-temperature resistance. The presence of genes related to flavin, Cytochrome c, siderophore, and other related proteins supported Fe(III) reduction. In addition, CQ-Y1 could survive at 10% NaCl (w/v) and 45°C, and temperature showed more pronounced effects than NaCl concentration on the bacterial growth. The maximum Fe(III) reduction ratio of CQ-Y1 reached 70.1% at 30°C without NaCl, and the reduction reaction remained active at 40°C with 3% NaCl (w/v). NaCl concentration was more effective than temperature on microbial Fe(III) reduction. And the reduction products under high temperature and high NaCl conditions were characterized as Fe₃(PO₄)₂, FeCl₂ and Fe(OH)₂.

Discussion

Accordingly, a Fe(III) reduction mechanism of CQ-Y1 mediated by Cytochrome c and flavin was hypothesised. These findings could provide information for a better understanding of the origin and evolution of genomic and metabolic diversity of S. xiamenensis.

Direct observation of humic acid-promoted hydrolysis of phytate through stabilizing a conserved catalytic domain in phytase

As a potential phosphorus (P) pool, the enzymatic hydrolysis of organic phosphorus (P_o) is of fundamental importance due to the release of bioavailable inorganic phosphate (P_i) for agronomic P sustainability. However, little is known about the role of soil organic matter (SOM) in the hydrolysis process of phytate by phytase and the subsequent chemical behaviors involving the hydrolysis product (P_i) at different soil interfaces. Here, by using liquid-cell atomic force microscopy (AFM), we present a model system to in situ quantify the nucleation kinetics of phytase-released P_i when precipitating with representative soil multivalent cations (Ca²⁺/Fe³⁺) on typical soil mineral/organic interfaces in the presence/absence of humic acid (HA), which involves complex phytase-interface-HA interactions. We observed that a higher HA concentration resulted in a faster nucleation rate of amorphous calcium/iron phosphate (ACP/AIP) on bare and organically-coated (-OH/-COOH) mica surfaces compared with the HA-free control. Besides, the nucleation rate of ACP/AIP induced by organic interfaces was much more significant than that induced by clay mineral interfaces. By combining enzyme activity/stability experiments and AFM-based PeakForce quantitative nanomechanical mapping (PF-QNM) measurements, we directly quantified the contribution of noncovalent phytase-HA interaction to the increase in enzymatic activity from complex phytase-interface-HA interactions. Furthermore, the direct complexation of phytase-HA resulted in the stabilization of a conserved active catalytic domain (ACD) in phytase through the enhanced formation of both an ordered, stereochemically-favored catalytic domain and an unordered non-catalytic domain, which was revealed by Raman secondary structure determination. The results provide direct insights into how HA regulates the catalytic activity of phytase controlling P_o fates and how soil interfaces determine the behaviors of released P_i to affect its availability, and thereby contribute to P sustainability in soils.

Hydrogen peroxide and high-temperature heating differently alter the stability and aggregation of black soil colloids

Chemical oxidation and high-temperature heating have been widely used for the decontamination of soils polluted by hydrocarbons and the removal of soil organic matter. Chemical oxidation and high-temperature heating decreased the stability of soil colloids, but the difference in colloidal stability and aggregation behaviors of soil after chemical oxidation and high-temperature heating is not clear. In this study, taken black soil as an example, we tested the stability profiles of black soil colloids (BC), hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) treated black soil colloids (BC_H₂O₂), and 350 °C treated black soil colloids (BC_350 °C) in three salt solutions (NaCl, CaCl₂, and Na₂SO₄) with different salt concentrations. The stability of soil colloids in salt solutions was in the order of BC > BC_350 °C > BC_H₂O₂. The salt concentrations at which three colloids started to be unstable were much lower for CaCl₂ solution than those for NaCl and Na₂SO₄ solution. Salt concentrations that suspension started to be unstable were similar in NaCl and Na₂SO₄ solution for all the three colloids, but the colloidal stability profile in NaCl solution decreased faster than that in Na₂SO₄ solution when the suspension was unstable. The stability profiles of three colloids at the fast aggregation stage could be well fitted with the proposed exponential model, and model parameters (t₀ and S_max) could reflect the stability behaviors of soil colloids in various salt solutions.

Iron Cycle Tuned by Outer-Membrane Cytochromes of Dissimilatory Metal-Reducing Bacteria: Interfacial Dynamics and Mechanisms In Vitro

The biogeochemical cycle of iron is of great importance to living organisms on Earth, and dissimilatory metal-reducing bacteria (DMRB) with the capability of reducing hematite (α-Fe2O3) by outer-membrane (OM) cytochromes play a great role in the iron cycle. However, the dynamic binding of cytochromes to α-Fe2O3 at the molecular level and the resulting impact on the photon-to-electron conversion of α-Fe2O3 for the iron cycle are not fully understood. To address these issues, two-dimensional IR correlation analysis coupled with molecular dynamics (MD) simulations was conducted for an OmcA-Fe2O3 system as OmcA bonds stronger with hematite in a typical DMRB,Shewanella. The photoelectric response of α-Fe2O3 with the OmcA coating was evaluated at three different potentials. Specifically, the binding groups from OmcA to α-Fe2O3 were in the sequence of carboxyl groups, amide II, and amide I. Further MD analysis reveals that both electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonds played essential roles in the binding process, leading to the structural changes of OmcA to facilitate iron reduction. Moreover, the OmcA coating could store the photogenerated electrons from α-Fe2O3 like a capacitor and utilize the stored electrons for α-Fe2O3 reduction in dark and anoxic environments, further driving the biogeochemical cycle of iron. These investigations give the dynamic information on the OM protein/hematite interaction and provide fundamental insights into the biogeochemical cycle of iron by taking the photon-induced redox chemistry of iron oxide into consideration.

New insights into the colloidal stability of graphene oxide in aquatic environment: Interplays of photoaging and proteins

Wide application leads to release of graphene oxide (GO) in aquatic environment, where it is subjected to photoaging and changes in physicochemical properties. As important component of natural organic matters, proteins may greatly affect the aggregation behaviors of photoaged GO. The effects of a typical model protein (bovine serum albumin, BSA) on the colloidal stability of photoaged GO were firstly investigated. Photoaging reduced the lateral size and oxygen-containing groups of GO, while the graphene domains and hydrophobicity increased as a function of irradiation time (0-24 h). Consequently, the photoaged GO became less stable than the pristine one in electrolyte solutions. Adsorption of BSA on the surface of the photoaged GO decreased as well, leading to thinner BSA coating on the photoaged GO. In the solutions with low concentrations of electrolytes, the aggregation rate constants (k) of all the photoaged GO firstly increased to the maximum agglomeration rate constants (k_fast, regime I), maintained at k_fast (regime Ⅱ) and then decreased to zero (regime Ⅲ) as the BSA concentration increased. In both regime I and III, the photoaged GO were less stable at the same BSA concentrations, and the impacts of BSA on the colloidal stability of the photoaged GO were less than the pristine one, which was attributed to the weaker interactions between the photoaged GO and BSA. This study provided new insights into the colloidal stability and fate of GO nanomaterials, which are subjected to extensive light irradiation, in wastewater and protein-rich aquatic environment.

Outer Membrane c-Type Cytochromes OmcA and MtrC Play Distinct Roles in Enhancing the Attachment of Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 Cells to Goethite

The outer membrane c-type cytochromes (c-Cyts) OmcA and MtrC in Shewanella are key terminal reductases that bind and transfer electrons directly to iron (hydr)oxides. Although the amounts of OmcA and MtrC at the cell surface and their molecular structures are largely comparable, MtrC is known to play a more important role in dissimilatory iron reduction. To explore the roles of these outer membrane c-Cyts in the interaction of Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 with iron oxides, the processes of attachment of S. oneidensis MR-1 wild type and c-type cytochrome-deficient mutants (the ΔomcA, ΔmtrC, and ΔomcA ΔmtrC mutants) to goethite are compared via quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D). Strains with OmcA exhibit a rapid initial attachment. The quantitative model for QCM-D responses reveals that MtrC enhances the contact area and contact elasticity of cells with goethite by more than one and two times, respectively. In situ attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared two-dimensional correlation spectroscopic (ATR-FTIR 2D-CoS) analysis shows that MtrC promotes the initial interfacial reaction via an inner-sphere coordination. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) analysis demonstrates that OmcA enhances the attractive force between cells and goethite by about 60%. As a result, OmcA contributes to a higher attractive force with goethite and induces a rapid short-term attachment, while MtrC is more important in the longer-term interaction through an enhanced contact area, which promotes interfacial reactions. These results reveal that c-Cyts OmcA and MtrC adopt different mechanisms for enhancing the attachment of S. oneidensis MR-1 cells to goethite. It improves our understanding of the function of outer membrane c-Cyts and the influence of cell surface macromolecules in cell-mineral interactions.IMPORTANCE Shewanella species are one group of versatile and widespread dissimilatory iron-reducing bacteria, which are capable of respiring insoluble iron minerals via six multiheme c-type cytochromes. Outer membrane c-type cytochromes (c-Cyts) OmcA and MtrC are the terminal reductases in this pathway and have comparable protein structures. In this study, we elucidate the different roles of OmcA and MtrC in the interaction of S. oneidensis MR-1 with goethite at the whole-cell level. OmcA confers enhanced affinity toward goethite and results in rapid attachment. Meanwhile, MtrC significantly increases the contact area of bacterial cells with goethite and promotes the interfacial reaction, which may explain its central role in extracellular electron transfer. This study provides novel insights into the role of bacterial surface macromolecules in the interfacial interaction of bacteria with minerals, which is critical to the development of a comprehensive understanding of cell-mineral interactions.

The Crucial Role of Environmental Coronas in Determining the Biological Effects of Engineered Nanomaterials

In aquatic environments, a large number of ecological macromolecules (e.g., natural organic matter (NOM), extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), and proteins) can adsorb onto the surface of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) to form a unique environmental corona. The presence of environmental corona as an eco-nano interface can significantly alter the bioavailability, biocompatibility, and toxicity of pristine ENMs to aquatic organisms. However, as an emerging field, research on the impact of the environmental corona on the fate and behavior of ENMs in aquatic environments is still in its infancy. To promote a deeper understanding of its importance in driving or moderating ENM toxicity, this study systemically recapitulates the literature of representative types of macromolecules that are adsorbed onto ENMs; these constitute the environmental corona, including NOM, EPS, proteins, and surfactants. Next, the ecotoxicological effects of environmental corona-coated ENMs on representative aquatic organisms at different trophic levels are discussed in comparison to pristine ENMs, based on the reported studies. According to this analysis, molecular mechanisms triggered by pristine and environmental corona-coated ENMs are compared, including membrane adhesion, membrane damage, cellular internalization, oxidative stress, immunotoxicity, genotoxicity, and reproductive toxicity. Finally, current knowledge gaps and challenges in this field are discussed from the ecotoxicology perspective.

Effects of Extracellular Polymeric Substances on the Formation and Methylation of Mercury Sulfide Nanoparticles

Growing evidence has suggested that microbial biofilms are potential environmental "hotspots" for the production and accumulation of a bioaccumulative neurotoxin, methylmercury. Here, we demonstrate that extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), the main components of biofilm matrices, significantly interfere with mercury sulfide precipitation and lead to the formation of nanoparticulate metacinnabar available for microbial methylation, a natural process predominantly responsible for the environmental occurrence of methylmercury. EPS derived from mercury methylating bacteria, particularly Desulfovibrio desulfuricans ND132, substantially increase the methylation potential of nanoparticulate mercury. This is likely due to the abundant aromatic biomolecules in EPS that strongly interact with mercury sulfide via inner-sphere complexation and consequently enhance the short-range structural disorder while mitigating the aggregation of nanoparticulate mercury. The EPS-elevated bioavailability of nanoparticulate mercury to D. desulfuricans ND132 is not induced by dissolution of these nanoparticles in aqueous phase, and may be dictated by cell-nanoparticle interfacial reactions. Our discovery is the first step of mechanistically understanding methylmercury production in biofilms. These new mechanistic insights will help incorporate microbial EPS and particulate-phase mercury into mercury methylation models, and may facilitate the assessment of biogeochemical cycling of other nutrient or toxic elements driven by EPS-producing microorganisms that are prevalent in nature.

Adsorption kinetics, conformational change, and enzymatic activity of β-glucosidase on hematite (α-Fe2O3) surfaces

Substantial fractions of extracellular enzymes are intimately associated with soil minerals, which may protect enzymes from denaturation, precipitation, proteolysis, or microbial consumption in soil environments. However, how mineral surface properties affect enzyme-mineral interactions and enzymatic activity of enzymes associated to mineral surface is still unclear. In the present study, adsorption behavior, conformational change, and enzymatic activity of β-glucosidase (BG) on hematite (001) face and (104) face, respectively, were investigated using in situ attenuated total reflectance FTIR spectroscopy and batch experiments. β-glucosidase undergoes greater conformational changes upon adsorption onto hematite (104) face than on hematite (001) face, probably due to the stronger protein-surface interactions on (104) face with the relatively higher surface hydroxyl density. On the other hand, the amount of BG sorbed on hematite (001) face was nearly two times higher than that on hematite (104) at the end of the 150-min adsorption experiments, due to the higher extent of conformational change in β-glucosidase on hematite (104) face. Correspondingly, the initial rate of cellobiose hydrolysis by per gram of β-glucosidase adsorbed on hematite (104) face was 1.7 times higher than that on hematite (001) face. However, when the density of hematite particles was same, the extent of cellobiose hydrolysis was 1.2 times higher on hematite (001) face than that on the (104) face, because of the higher adsorbed amount of β-glucosidase on the former. This study decoupled the effects of mineral surface properties on adsorption kinetics and conformational changes of soil enzymes bound to soil minerals and provided new insights into the correlation between mineral surface properties and catalytical activity of mineral-associated enzymes in soil environments.

Kinetics and Mechanisms of Protein Adsorption and Conformational Change on Hematite Particles

Adsorption kinetics and conformational changes of a model protein, bovine serum albumin (BSA, 0.1, 0.5, or 1.0 g/L), on the surface of hematite (α-Fe₂O₃) particles in 39 ± 9, 68 ± 9, and 103 ± 8 nm, respectively, were measured using attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy. As the particle size increases, the amount of adsorbed BSA decreases, but the loss in the helical structure of adsorbed BSA increases due to the stronger interaction forces between adsorbed BSA and the larger particles. On 39 or 68 nm hematite particles, refolding of adsorbed BSA can be induced by protein-protein interactions, when the protein surface coverage exceeds certain critical values. Two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2D-COS) analysis of time-dependent ATR-FTIR spectra indicate that the increase in the amount of adsorbed BSA occurs prior to the loss in the BSA helical structure in the initial stage of adsorption processes, whereas an opposite sequence of the changes to BSA conformation and surface coverage is observed during the subsequent refolding processes. Desorption experiments show that replacing the protein solution with water can quench the refolding, but not the unfolding, of adsorbed BSA. A kinetic model was proposed to quantitatively describe the interplay of adsorption kinetics and conformational change, as well as the effects of particle size and initial protein concentration on the rate constants of elementary steps in protein adsorption onto a mineral surface.

Effect of co-existing Co2+ ions on the aggregation of humic acid in aquatic environment: Aggregation kinetics, dynamic properties and fluorescence spectroscopic study

The fate and transport of humic substances in the aquatic environments depend significantly on their interactions with co-existing ions. Herein, we employed dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurement, molecular dynamic (MD) simulation and fluorescence spectrometry to investigate the aggregation of humic acid (HA) in the presence of Co²⁺ ions. The aggregation kinetics was depicted by hydrodynamic diameter (<D_h>) and the attachment efficiency (α) of HA aggregates. α increases gradually in the reaction-limited (slow) regime due to the decrease of the double layer repulsion, and the energy barrier is eliminated to a certain extent in the diffusion-limited reaction while α close to unity. The complexation between functional groups (i.e. carboxylic and phenolic groups) of HA and Co²⁺ ions contributes significantly to the aggregation process of HA. MD simulation and density functional theory (DFT) calculation demonstrate that the aggregation process of HA can be promoted by Co²⁺ through several inter- or intra-molecular interactions between HA and the Co²⁺ ions. The results provide a pathway for insight into the interactions between HA and metal ions, which is important for deeply understanding the environmental behaviors of HA in natural aqueous systems.

Goethite Hinders Azo Dye Bioreduction by Blocking Terminal Reductive Sites on the Outer Membrane of Shewanella decolorationis S12

Iron (hydr)oxides are the most ubiquitous Fe(III)-containing minerals in the near-surface environments and can regulate organic pollutant biotransformation by participating in bacterial extracellular electron transfer under anaerobic conditions. Mechanisms described so far are based on their redox properties in bacterial extracellular respiration. Here, we find that goethite, a typical iron (hydr)oxide, inhibits the bioreduction of different polar azo dyes by Shewanella decolorationis S12 not through electron competition, but by the contact of its surface Fe(III) with the bacterial outer surface. Through the combined results of attenuated total reflectance (ATR) Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy, and confocal laser scanning microscope, we found that the outer membrane proteins MtrC and OmcA of strain S12 are key binding sites for goethite surface. Meanwhile, they were identified as the important reductive terminals for azo dyes. These results suggest that goethite may block the terminal reductive sites of azo dyes on the bacterial outer membrane to inhibit their bioreduction. This discovered role of goethite in bioreduction provides new insight into the microbial transformation processes of organic pollutants in iron (hydr)oxide-containing environments.

Elucidating the Role of Sulfide on the Stability of Ferrihydrite Colloids under Anoxic Conditions

While the reaction mechanisms between ferrihydrite and sulfide are well-documented, the role of redox reactions on the particle-particle stability of ferrihydrite colloids is largely overlooked. Such reactions are critical for a number of (bio)geochemical processes governing ferrihydrite-based colloid processing and their associated role in nutrient and contaminant subsurface dynamics. Taking a fundamental colloid chemistry approach, along with a complementary suite of characterization techniques, here, we explore the stability mechanisms of ferrihydrite colloids over a wide range of environmentally relevant sulfide concentrations at pH 6.0. Results show that sulfide lowered the stability of both ferrihydrite colloids in a concentration-dependent fashion. At lower sulfide concentrations (15.6-62.5 μM), ferrihydrite colloids are apparently stable, but their critical coagulation concentration (CCC) in NaCl linearly decreases with increasing sulfide concentration. This is attributed to the formation of negatively charged elemental sulfur (S(0)) nanoparticles on the surfaces of positively charged ferrihydrite, intensifying the electrostatic attractions between oppositely charged regions on adjacent ferrihydrite surfaces. Further increasing sulfide concentration generates more S(0) attaching to the ferrihydrite surface. This results in effective surface charge neutralization and then subsequent charge reversal, leading to extensive aggregation of ferrihydrite (core) colloids. Interestingly, for the ferrihydrite colloids with higher hydrodynamic diameter, aggregation rates linearly decreases with increasing sulfide concentration from 156.3 to 312.5 μM, which is likely due to the formation of substantial amounts of negatively charged S(0) and FeS. Findings highlight the significance of sulfidation products in controlling the stability of ferrihydrite colloids in sulfidic environments.

Mediation of Extracellular Polymeric Substances in Microbial Reduction of Hematite by Shewanella oneidensis MR-1

Extracellular electron transfer (EET) plays a fundamental role in microbial reduction/oxidation of minerals. Extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) surrounding the cells constitute a matrix that separates the cell's outer membrane from insoluble minerals and environmental fluid. This study investigated the effects of EPS on EET processes during microbial reduction of hematite by the iron-reducing strain Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 (MR-1). Electrochemical characterization techniques were employed to determine the influence of EPS components on the redox ability of MR-1. Cells with removed EPS exhibited approximately 30% higher hematite reduction than regular MR-1 cells, and produced a current density of 56 μA cm-2, corresponding to 3-4 fold that of regular MR-1. The superior EET of EPS-deprived cells could be attributed to direct contact between outer membrane proteins and hematite surface, as indicated by more redox peaks being detected by cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry. The significantly reduced current density of MR-1 cells treated with proteinase K and deoxyribonuclease suggests that the electron transfer capacity across the EPS layer depends mainly on the spatial distribution of specific proteins and electron shuttles. Exopolysaccharides in EPS tend to inhibit electron transfer, however they also favor the attachment of cells onto hematite surfaces. Consistently, the charge transfer resistance of cells lacking EPS was only 116.3 Ω, approximately 44 times lower than that of regular cells (5,139.1 Ω). These findings point to a negative influence of EPS on EET processes for microbial reduction/oxidation of minerals.

Dissolution Behavior of Isolated and Aggregated Hematite Particles Revealed by in Situ Liquid Cell Transmission Electron Microscopy

Dissolution behavior of isolated and aggregated hematite particles in 10, 36, and 103 nm, respectively, was investigated using in situ liquid cell transmission microscopy (LCTEM). The high spatial and temporal resolution of LCTEM enables us to differentiate the respective effects of primary particle size, crystal defects, and aggregation state on particle dissolution. At similar electron-beam irradiation parameters, the initial surface-area normalized dissolution rates ( R_SA,Int) of isolated 10, 36, and 103 nm particles are 4.64 ± 3.60, 0.91 ± 0.44, and 0.24 ± 0.04 mg m^-2 s^-1, respectively. Interface free energy, calculated from the measured R_SA,Int, decreases with the decreasing primary particle size. No preferential etching occurs on 10 nm, defect-free nanoparticles, whereas dissolution preferentially originates from crystal defects on 103 nm particles. In dissolution of aggregated particles, dissolution occurs more rapidly on the particles that are more accessible to bulk solution than the others inside the aggregate. As dissolution proceeds, dendritic aggregates break into several smaller aggregates that respectively shrink into even smaller and more compact aggregates, followed by reaggregation together. This study directly shows microscopic dissolution behavior of isolated and aggregated particles in different primary particle sizes, which is important to understand bioavailability, transport, and fate of nanoparticles in aquatic systems.

Microbial electrocatalysis: Redox mediators responsible for extracellular electron transfer

Redox mediator plays an important role in extracellular electron transfer (EET) in many environments wherein microbial electrocatalysis occurs actively. Because of the block of cell envelope and the low difference of redox potential between the intracellular and extracellular surroundings, the proceeding of EET depends mainly on the help of a variety of mediators that function as an electron carrier or bridge. In this Review, we will summarize a wide range of redox mediators and further discuss their functional mechanisms in EET that drives a series of microbial electrocatalytic reactions. Studying these mediators adds to our knowledge of how charge transport and electrochemical reactions occur at the microorganism-electrode interface. This understanding would promote the widespread applications of microbial electrocatalysis in microbial fuel cells, bioremediation, bioelectrosynthesis, biomining, nanomaterial productions, etc. These improved applications will greatly benefit the sustainable development of the environmental-friendly biochemical industries.

Concentration Dependent Effects of Bovine Serum Albumin on Graphene Oxide Colloidal Stability in Aquatic Environment

The impacts of a model globular protein (bovine serum albumin, BSA) on aggregation kinetics of graphene oxide (GO) in aquatic environment were investigated through time-resolved dynamic light scattering at pH 5.5. Aggregation kinetics of GO without BSA as a function of electrolyte concentrations (NaCl, MgCl₂, and CaCl₂) followed the traditional Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) theory, and the critical coagulation concentration (CCC) was 190, 5.41, and 1.61 mM, respectively. As BSA was present, it affected the GO stability in a concentration dependent manner. At fixed electrolyte concentrations below the CCC values, for example 120 mM NaCl, the attachment efficiency of GO increased from 0.08 to 1, then decreased gradually and finally reached up to zero as BSA concentration increased from 0 to 66.5 mg C/L. The low-concentration BSA depressed GO stability mainly due to electrostatic binding between the positively charged lysine groups of BSA and negatively charged groups of GO, as well as double layer compression effect. With the increase of BSA concentration, more and more BSA molecules were adsorbed on GO, leading to strong steric repulsion which finally predominated and stabilized the GO. These results provided significant information about the concentration dependent effects of natural organic matters on GO stability under environmentally relevant conditions.

Protein corona between nanoparticles and bacterial proteins in activated sludge: Characterization and effect on nanoparticle aggregation

In this work, the protein coronas of activated sludge proteins on TiO₂ nanoparticles (TNPs) and ZnO nanoparticles (ZNPs) were characterized. The proteins with high affinity to TNPs and ZNPs were identified by shotgun proteomics, and their effects of on the distributions of TNPs and ZNPs in activated sludge were concluded. In addition, the effects of protein coronas on the aggregations of TNPs and ZNPs were evaluated. Thirty and nine proteins with high affinities to TNPs and ZNPs were identified, respectively. The proteomics and adsorption isotherms demonstrated that activated sludge had a higher affinity to TNPs than to ZNPs. The aggregation percentages of ZNPs at 35, 53, and 106 mg/L of proteins were 13%, 14%, and 18%, respectively, whereas those of TNPs were 21%, 30%, 41%, respectively. The proteins contributed to ZNPs aggregation by dissolved Zn ion-bridging, whereas the increasing protein concentrations enhanced the TNPs aggregation through macromolecule bridging flocculation.

Formation, Aggregation, and Deposition Dynamics of NOM-Iron Colloids at Anoxic-Oxic Interfaces

The important role of natural organic matter (NOM)-Fe colloids in influencing contaminant transport, and this role can be influenced by the formation, aggregation, and particle deposition dynamics of NOM-Fe colloids. In this work, NOM-Fe colloids at different C/Fe ratios were prepared by mixing different concentrations of humic acid (HA) with 10 mg/L Fe(II) under anoxic conditions. The colloids were characterized by an array of techniques and their aggregation and deposition behaviors were examined under both anoxic and oxic conditions. The colloids are composed of HA-Fe(II) at anoxic conditions, while they are made up of HA-Fe(III) at oxic conditions until the C/Fe molar ratio exceeds 1.6. For C/Fe molar ratios above 1.6, the aggregation and deposition kinetics of HA-Fe(II) colloids under anoxic conditions are slower than those of HA-Fe(III) colloids under oxic conditions. Further, the aggregation of HA-Fe colloids under both anoxic and oxic conditions decreases with increasing C/Fe molar ratio from 1.6 to 23.3. This study highlights the importance of the redox transformation of Fe(II) to Fe(III) and the C/Fe ratio for the formation and stability of NOM-Fe colloids that occur in subsurface environments with anoxic-oxic interfaces.

Transformation and bioavailability of metal oxide nanoparticles in aquatic and terrestrial environments. A review

Metal oxide nanoparticles (MeO-NPs) are among the most consumed NPs and also have wide applications in various areas which increased their release into the environmental system. Aquatic (water and sediments) and terrestrial compartments are predicted to be the destination of the released MeO-NPs. In these compartments, the particles are subjected to various dynamic processes such as physical, chemical and biological processes, and undergo transformations which drive them away from their pristine state. These transformation pathways can have strong implications for the fate, transport, persistence, bioavailability and toxic-effects of the NPs. In this critical review, we provide the state-of-the-knowledge on the transformation processes and bioavailability of MeO-NPs in the environment, which is the topic of interest to researchers. We also recommend future research directions in the area which will support future risk assessments by enhancing our knowledge of the transformation and bioavailability of MeO-NPs.
