Solar Photothermal Disinfection using Broadband-Light Absorbing Gold Nanoparticles and Carbon Black

Bioprotective Respirator Assembled by Defective Carbon Nitride for Long-Term Light Triggered Health Protection

Wearing face masks is the best way to stop the spread of respiratory infections. However, if masks are not sterilized, changing them too frequently can actually increase the risk of cross-contamination. Herein, the construction of an antipathogen photocatalytic mask with carbon vacancy-modified carbon nitride nanosheets (g-C3N4-VC Ns) coated on the non-woven fabrics of the out layer of the mask, offering effective and long-term protection against damaging pathogens when exposed to light is reported. The introduced carbon vacancies are found capable of creating energy-disordered sites and inducing energetic electric force to overcome the Coulomb interactions between electron-hole pairs, thus promoting the electron-hole separation to achieve a high generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Thanks to its high activity in generating ROS upon exposure to light, the as-prepared photocatalytic mask shows high pathogen sterilization performance. This, in turn, prolongs the mask's protective lifetime, decreases the need for regular replacement, and decreases medical waste production. The work demonstrated here opens new viewpoints in designing pathogens biocidal protective devices for health protection, offering significant promise in specific environment self-protection.

Emerging trends and future challenges of advanced 2D nanomaterials for combating bacterial resistance

The number of multi-drug-resistant bacteria has increased over the last few decades, which has caused a detrimental impact on public health worldwide. In resolving antibiotic resistance development among different bacterial communities, new antimicrobial agents and nanoparticle-based strategies need to be designed foreseeing the slow discovery of new functioning antibiotics. Advanced research studies have revealed the significant disinfection potential of two-dimensional nanomaterials (2D NMs) to be severed as effective antibacterial agents due to their unique physicochemical properties. This review covers the current research progress of 2D NMs-based antibacterial strategies based on an inclusive explanation of 2D NMs' impact as antibacterial agents, including a detailed introduction to each possible well-known antibacterial mechanism. The impact of the physicochemical properties of 2D NMs on their antibacterial activities has been deliberated while explaining the toxic effects of 2D NMs and discussing their biomedical significance, dysbiosis, and cellular nanotoxicity. Adding to the challenges, we also discussed the major issues regarding the current quality and availability of nanotoxicity data. However, smart advancements are required to fabricate biocompatible 2D antibacterial NMs and exploit their potential to combat bacterial resistance clinically.

Nanomaterials in 4D Printing: Expanding the Frontiers of Advanced Manufacturing

As an innovative technology, four-dimentional (4D) printing is built upon the principles of three-dimentional (3D) printing with an additional dimension: time. While traditional 3D printing creates static objects, 4D printing generates "responsive 3D printed structures", enabling them to transform or self-assemble in response to external stimuli. Due to the dynamic nature, 4D printing has demonstrated tremendous potential in a range of industries, encompassing aerospace, healthcare, and intelligent devices. Nanotechnology has gained considerable attention owing to the exceptional properties and functions of nanomaterials. Incorporating nanomaterials into an intelligent matrix enhances the physiochemical properties of 4D printed constructs, introducing novel functions. This review provides a comprehensive overview of current applications of nanomaterials in 4D printing, exploring their synergistic potential to create dynamic and responsive structures. Nanomaterials play diverse roles as rheology modifiers, mechanical enhancers, function introducers, and more. The overarching goal of this review is to inspire researchers to delve into the vast potential of nanomaterial-enabled 4D printing, propelling advancements in this rapidly evolving field.

Enhanced Total Contactless Photothermal Desalination by Translucent Thin Film Coating of Crystalline Nanocellulose

The innovative approach of harnessing abundant solar energy to facilitate water purification holds great potential for addressing a diverse range of water-related challenges. Utilizing the same method of photothermal desalination is highly promising, sustainable, and cost effective. However, in photothermal desalination, generally, steam is generated at the liquid-air interface. Despite its immense potential, this results in a lower evaporation rate and is prone to salt fouling. Therefore, to address two main challenges, (1) fouling and (2) maximum interfacial temperature (100 °C), here, we report total contactless photothermal desalination by a translucent thin film coating of Crystalline Nanocellulose (CNC). In contactless photothermal desalination, the active photothermal layer remains in no physical contact with the saline water; thus, automatic antifouling and a temperature above the boiling point of water can be achieved for water purification. In this report, we have sustainably extracted CNC from waste sawdust by a sonochemical extraction method using minimal chemicals. Additionally, the sonoextraction method through cavitation helps in the desulfation of CNC. These thermally stable and highly crystalline CNCs are used in making active translucent photothermal active layers for photothermal desalination. CNCs were well characterized by both microscopic and spectroscopic techniques. In the photothermal desalination, the results show an augmented evaporation rate of ∼3.30 kg/m2·h and virtually infinite recyclability for longer usability. Moreover, the integrated setup reported here comprises an independent module with a highly flexible design that mimics the greenhouse effect for a high solar-to-steam output.

Recent developments in solar-powered membrane distillation for sustainable desalination

The freshwater shortage continues to be one of the greatest challenges affecting our planet. Although traditional membrane distillation (MD) can produce clean water regardless of climatic conditions, the process wastes a lot of energy. The technique of solar-powered membrane distillation (SPMD) has received a lot of interest in the past decade, thanks to the development of photothermal materials. SPMD is a promising replacement for the traditional MD based on fossil fuels, as it can prevent the harmful effects of emissions on the environment. Integrating green solar energy with MD can reduce the cost of the water purification process and secure freshwater production in remote areas. At this point, it is important to consider the most current progress of the SPMD system and highlight the challenges and prospects of this technology. Based on this, the background, recent advances, and principles of MD and SPMD, their configurations and mechanisms, fabrication methods, advantages, and current limitations are discussed. Detailed comparisons between SPMD and traditional MD, assessments of various standards for incorporating photothermal materials with desirable properties, discussions of desalination and other applications of SPMD and MD, and energy consumption rates are also covered. The final section addresses the potential of SPMD to outperform traditional desalination technology while improving water production without requiring a significant amount of electrical or high-grade thermal energy.

Molecular Photothermal Conversion Catalyst Promotes Photocontrolled Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization

Photothermal conversion is a growing research area that promotes thermal transformations with visible light irradiation. However, few examples of dual photothermal conversion and catalysis limit the power of this phenomenon. Here, we take inspiration from nature's ability to use porphyrinic compounds for nonradiative relaxation to convert light into heat to facilitate thermal polymerization catalysis. We identify the photothermal conversion catalytic activity of a vitamin B12 derivative, heptamethyl ester cobyrinate (HME-Cob), to perform atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) under irradiation. Rapid polymerization are obtained under photothermal activation while maintaining good control over polymerization with the aid of a photoinitiator to enable light-induced catalyst regeneration. The catalyst exhibits exquisite temporal control in photocontrolled thermal polymerization. Ultimately, the activation of this complex is accessed across a broad range of wavelengths, including near-IR light, with excellent temporal control. This work showcases the potential of developing photothermal conversion catalysts.

Carbonaceous Materials-Based Photothermal Process in Water Treatment: From Originals to Frontier Applications

The photothermal process has attracted considerable attention in water treatment due to its advantages of low energy consumption and high efficiency. In this respect, photothermal materials play a crucial role in the photothermal process. Particularly, carbonaceous materials have emerged as promising candidates for this process because of exceptional photothermal performance. While previous research on carbonaceous materials has primarily focused on photothermal evaporation and sterilization, there is now a growing interest in exploring the potential of photothermal effect-assisted advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). However, the underlying mechanism of the photothermal effect assisted by carbonaceous materials remains unclear. This review aims to provide a comprehensive review of the photothermal process of carbonaceous materials in water treatment. It begins by introducing the photothermal properties of carbonaceous materials, followed by a discussion on strategies for enhancing these properties. Then, the application of carbonaceous materials-based photothermal process for water treatment is summarized. This includes both direct photothermal processes such as photothermal evaporation and sterilization, as well as indirect photothermal processes that assisted AOPs. Meanwhile, various mechanisms assisted by the photothermal effect are summarized. Finally, the challenges and opportunities of using carbonaceous materials-based photothermal processes for water treatment are proposed.

Photocatalytic microbial disinfection under indoor conditions: Prospects and challenges of near IR-photoactive materials

The accumulation of microbes especially in the air and in water bodies is causing the major disease outbreaks. Indoor environment remediation methods are necessary today to clean up these microbes. Among the remediation methods available, in situ generation of highly reactive and oxidizing radical species by advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) inactivate most of the microbes unselectively. Of these AOPs, photocatalytic microbial disinfection especially under indoor conditions is of great interest to maintain microbe-free indoor environment. For efficient microbes' inactivation under indoor conditions, the near IR and IR response of the photocatalysts must be improved. Though the photocatalytic disinfection of microbes using semiconductor-based photocatalysts has been extensively investigated, most of the photocatalysts that have been investigated are either weekly responsive or totally not irresponsive to IR photons due to inappropriate bandgap energies. Several strategies have been investigated to enhance the light harvesting properties of semiconductor based photocatalysts under indoor conditions and make them active to near IR and IR radiations. This review summarizes the recent progress in the field of materials for photocatalysts employed for microbial removal in indoor environments over the past decade as well as outlines key perspectives to enlighten future researches. The paper details the fundamentals of photocatalysis and basic properties of photocatalytic materials in the disinfection of common microbes under indoor conditions. The applications of photocatalytic materials in the disinfection of microbes in indoor environmental conditions are discussed and reviewed. Finally, the remaining challenges and future strategies/prospects in the design and synthesis of IR (and near IR) responsive photocatalysts are discussed.

Advances in photothermal regulation strategies: from efficient solar heating to daytime passive cooling

Photothermal regulation concerning solar harvesting and repelling has recently attracted significant interest due to the fast-growing research focus in the areas of solar heating for evaporation, photocatalysis, motion, and electricity generation, as well as passive cooling for cooling textiles and smart buildings. The parallel development of photothermal regulation strategies through both material and system designs has further improved the overall solar utilization efficiency for heating/cooling. In this review, we will review the latest progress in photothermal regulation, including solar heating and passive cooling, and their manipulating strategies. The underlying mechanisms and criteria of highly efficient photothermal regulation in terms of optical absorption/reflection, thermal conversion, transfer, and emission properties corresponding to the extensive catalog of nanostructured materials are discussed. The rational material and structural designs with spectral selectivity for improving the photothermal regulation performance are then highlighted. We finally present the recent significant developments of applications of photothermal regulation in clean energy and environmental areas and give a brief perspective on the current challenges and future development of controlled solar energy utilization.

Solar-driven strongly coupled plasmonic Au nanoarrays on mesoporous silica nanodisks enable selective fungal and bacterial inactivation in well water

Well water is an important water source in isolated rural areas but easily suffers from microbial contamination. Herein, we anchored periodic Au nanoarrays on mesoporous silica nanodisks (Au-MSN) to fabricate a solar-driven nano-stove for well water disinfection. The solar/Au-MSN process completely inactivated 3.98, 6.55, 7.11 log10 cfu/mL, and 3.37 log10 pfu/mL of Aspergillus niger spores, Escherichia coli, chlorine-resistant Spingopyxis sp. BM1-1, and bacteriophage MS2 within 5 min, respectively. Moreover, the complete inactivation of various microorganisms (even at a viable but nonculturable state) was achieved in the flow-through reactor under natural solar light in real well water matrixes. Thorough characterizations and theoretical simulations verified that the densely anchoring strategy of Au-MSN's nanoarray worked on broadband absorption via the photon confinement effect, and trace amounts of Au can induce strong electromagnetic fields and collective localized heating. The resulting surge of 1O2 and heat synergically destroyed membranes, dysfunction cellular self-defense and metabolic system, induced intracellular oxidative stress, and ultimately inactivated microorganisms. Additionally, the 1O2-dominated oxidation and cell adhesion facilitated the selective disinfection in real well water matrixes. This study provides a cost-effective and practical solution for efficient well water disinfection, which assists isolated rural areas in getting safe drinking water.

Cellulose-Based Intelligent Responsive Materials: A Review

Due to the rapid development of intelligent technology and the pursuit of green environmental protection, responsive materials with single response and actuation can no longer meet the requirements of modern technology for intelligence, diversification, and environmental friendliness. Therefore, intelligent responsive materials have received much attention. In recent years, with the development of new materials and technologies, cellulose materials have become increasingly used as responsive materials due to their advantages of sustainability and renewability. This review summarizes the relevant research on cellulose-based intelligent responsive materials in recent years. According to the stimuli responses, they are divided into temperature-, light-, electrical-, magnetic-, and humidity-responsive types. The response mechanism, application status, and development trend of cellulose-based intelligent responsive materials are summarized. Finally, the future perspectives on the preparation and applications of cellulose-based intelligent responsive materials are presented for future research directions.

Antibacterial Pathways in Transition Metal-Based Nanocomposites: A Mechanistic Overview

Across the planet, outbreaks of bacterial illnesses pose major health risks and raise concerns. Photodynamic, photothermal, and metal ion release effects of transition metal-based nanocomposites (TMNs) were recently shown to be highly effective in reducing bacterial resistance and upsurges in outbreaks. Surface plasmonic resonance, photonics, crystal structures, and optical properties of TMNs have been used to regulate metal ion release, produce oxidative stress, and generate heat for bactericidal applications. The superior properties of TMNs provide a chance to investigate and improve their antimicrobial actions, perhaps leading to therapeutic interventions. In this review, we discuss three alternative antibacterial strategies based on TMNs of photodynamic therapy, photothermal therapy, and metal ion release and their mechanistic actions. The scientific community has made significant efforts to address the safety, effectiveness, toxicity, and biocompatibility of these metallic nanostructures; significant achievements and trends have been highlighted in this review. The combination of therapies together has borne significant results to counter antimicrobial resistance (4-log reduction). These three antimicrobial pathways are separated into subcategories based on recent successes, highlighting potential needs and challenges in medical, environmental, and allied industries.

Biosafe Bi2O2Se ultrathin nanosheet for water disinfection via solar-induced photothermal synergistic effect

Solar-induced sterilization via photothermal synergy has attracted enormous attention due to its zero-energy consumption and the elimination of hazardous chemical disinfectant. Herein, we successfully synthesized a super biosafety Bi₂O₂Se with crossed nanosheet structure (Bi₂O₂Se-CN) for the sterilization of Escherichia coli (E. coli) via solar-induced photothermal synergistic effect. In comparison to bulk Bi₂O₂Se, the lower light reflection and more efficient photogenerated charge carrier separation under visible-infrared light irradiation resulted in the excellent sterilization effect of Bi₂O₂Se-CN, with a sterilization efficiency of 99.9% under the synergistic effect of light and heat. The crossed ultrathin nanosheet structure and suitable band gap width of Bi₂O₂Se-CN are fundamental reasons for its enhanced light absorption and charge carrier separation efficiency. Mechanistic studies showed that Bi₂O₂Se-CN can completely inactivate bacteria via generating a large amount of reactive oxygen species (•O₂^-, •OH, and ¹O₂) to attack the cell membrane, which further resulted in the reduced activity of intracellular enzymes and the leakage of intracellular contents. The biosafety property of Bi₂O₂Se-CN was confirmed by in vivo toxicological evaluation on the mice model. This work provided new ideas for the design of more efficient, energy-saving, biocompatible and environmental friendly solar water purification projects.

A systemic review on liquid crystals, nanoformulations and its application for detection and treatment of SARS - CoV- 2 (COVID - 19)

The COVID-19 is a pandemic caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, has instigated major health problems and prompted WHO to proclaim a worldwide medical emergency. The knowledge of SARS-CoV-2 fundamental structure, aetiology, its entrance mechanism, membrane hijacking and immune response against the virus, are important parameters to develop effective vaccines and medicines. Liquid crystals integrated nano-techniques and various nanoformulations were applied to tackle the severity of the virus. It was reported that nanoformulations have helped to enhance the effectiveness of presently accessible antiviral medicines or to elicit a fast immunological response against COVID-19 virus. Applications of liquid crystals, nanostructures, nanoformulations and nanotechnology in diagnosis, prevention, treatment and tailored vaccine administration against COVID-19 which will help in establishing the framework for a successful pandemic combat are reviewed. This review also focuses on limitations associated with liquid crystal-nanotechnology based systems and suggests the possible ways to address these limitations. Also, topical advancements in the ground of liquid crystals and nanostructures established diagnostics (nanosensor/biosensor) are discussed in detail.

Nanomaterial-enabled photothermal-based solar water disinfection processes: Fundamentals, recent advances, and mechanisms

The pathogenic microorganisms in water pose a great threat to human health. Photothermal and photothermocatalytic disinfection using nanomaterials (NPs) has offered a promising and effective strategy to address the challenges in solar water disinfection (SODIS), especially in the point-of-use operations. This review aims at providing comprehensive and state-of-the-art knowledge of photothermal-based disinfection by NPs. The fundamentals and principles of photothermal-based disinfection were first introduced. Then, recent advances in developing photothermal/photothermocatalytic catalysts were systematically summarized. The light-to-heat conversion and disinfection performance of a large variety of photothermal materials were presented. Given the complicated mechanisms of photothermal-based disinfection, the attacks from reactive oxygen species and heat, the destruction of bacterial cells, and the antibacterial effects of released metal ions were highlighted. Finally, future challenges and opportunities associated with the development of cost-effective photothermal/photothermocatalytic disinfection systems were outlined. This review will provide guidance in designing future NPs and inspire more research efforts from environmental nano-communities to move towards practical water disinfection operations.

A modified flower pollen-based photothermocatalytic process for enhanced solar water disinfection: Photoelectric effect and bactericidal mechanisms

Solar disinfection (SODIS) is regarded as an affordable and effective point-of-use (POU) water disinfection treatment urgently needed in rural developing world. This work developed an enhanced SODIS scheme that utilized a novel flower pollen-based catalyst (Te-TRP). The bench-scale experiments demonstrated 100% photothermocatalytic inactivation of approximately 7-log E. coli K-12, Spingopyxis sp. BM1-1, or S. aureus bacterium by Te-TRP within 40-60 min. Moving toward practical device design, we constructed a flow-through reactor and demonstrated the outstanding water disinfection performance of Te-TRP. The in-depth mechanistic study revealed the synergetic effect between photocatalysis and photothermal conversion and identified the bacterial inactivation pathway. ¹O₂ and ·O₂^¯ were verified to be the dominant reactive oxygen species involved in the bacterial inactivation. The damage to bacterial cells caused by photothermocatalytic reactions was systematically investigated, demonstrating the cell membrane destruction, the loss of enzyme activity, the increased cell membrane permeability, and the complete inactivation of bacteria without the viable but nonculturable state cells. This work not only affords a facile approach to preparing biomaterial-based catalysts capable of efficient photothermocatalytic bacterial inactivation, but also proposes a prototype of POU water treatment, opening up an avenue for sustainable environmental remediation.

Plasmonic photoreactors-coated plastic tubing as combined-active-and-passive antimicrobial flow sterilizer

Plastic materials are ubiquitous in medical devices and consumer goods. As bacterial contamination of plastic surfaces can pose significant health risks, there is a need for effective approaches both to inactivate bacteria on plastic surfaces and to prevent colonization of plastic surfaces. In this study, we evaluate a plasmonic photoreactor coating for plastic surfaces that provides both active and passive antimicrobial effects and implement a visible light-driven antibacterial flow sterilizer. We demonstrate that this approach inactivates bacteria in an aqueous suspension passed through a photoreactor-coated polyethylene tubing, achieving log reduction values (LRVs) > 5 for both Gram-positive and -negative bacteria under resonant LED illumination. Importantly, the antimicrobial flow sterilizers do not cause a detectable loss of functionality for monoclonal antibodies that were included in this work as an example of high-value biologics that require sterilization. Under ambient light illumination, the plasmonic photoreactor coating exhibits a significant inhibitory effect on bacterial colonization and biofilm formation. The inhibitory effect was substantially weaker for mammalian cells, indicating some selectivity in the protection provided by the coating.

Enhanced bacterial inactivation by activated carbon modified with nano-sized silver oxides: Performance and mechanism

In this study, nano-sized silver oxides were loaded on activated carbon (nAg2O/AC) through a facile impregnation-calcination method for enhanced bacterial inactivation from drinking water, in which Escherichia coli (E. coli) was used as target bacteria. XRD and SEM characterization confirmed that nano-sized Ag2O particles (50-200 nm) were successfully prepared and uniformly distributed on the surfaces and pores of AC. Due to the structural reducing groups of AC, surface-bound Ag(I) was partially converted to Ag in the nAg2O matrix and the resulted Ag could sterilize E. coli directly. More importantly, surface-bound Ag could catalyze O2 and H2O to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) for oxidation sterilization, thus significantly enhanced the inactivation efficiency from 0.8 log10 CFU/mL (nAg2O control) and 0.2 log10 CFU/mL (AC control) to 6.0 log10 CFU/mL in the nAg2O/AC system. The inactivation process was highly pH-dependent, and neutral pH was favorable for sterilization. A sterilization efficiency of 5.2 log10 CFU/mL could still be achieved after 5 running cycles, indicating stable sterilization performance of nAg2O/AC. In addition, the nAg2O/AC also exhibited excellent renewability since a sterilization efficiency of 5.8 log10 CFU/mL was obtained after nAg2O being stripped and reloaded on the AC. These results demonstrated that nAg2O-modified AC is an efficient material for sterilization in water treatment.

Solar disinfection (SODIS) technologies as alternative for large-scale public drinking water supply: Advances and challenges

Gastrointestinal waterborne diseases, continue to stand out among the most lethal diseases in developing countries, because of consuming contaminated water taken from unsafe sources. Advances made in recent decades in methods of solar water disinfection (SODIS) have shown that SODIS is an effective and inexpensive method of providing drinking water, capable of substantially reducing the prevalence and mortality of waterborne diseases. The increased impact of SODIS in communities lacking drinking water services depends on a successful upgrade from conventional SODIS (based on PET bottle reactors) in high flow continuous flow systems for solar water disinfection (CFSSWD). This review aimed to identify the main limitations of conventional SODIS that hinder its application as a large-scale drinking water supply strategy, and to propose ways to overcome these limitations (without making it economically inaccessible) based on the current frontier of advances technological. It was found that the successful development of the CFSSWD depends on overcoming the current limitations of conventional SODIS and the development of systems whose configurations allow combining the properties of solar pasteurization (SOPAS) and SODIS. Different improvements need to be made to the main components of the CFSSWD, such as increasing the performance of solar radiation collectors, photo and thermal reactors and heat exchangers. The integration of disinfection technologies based on photocatalytic and photothermal nanomaterials also needs to be achieved. The performance evaluation of the CFSSWD should be made considering resistant microorganisms, such as the environmental resistance structures of bacteria or protozoa (spores or (oo)cysts) as targets of disinfection approaches.

The occurrence and control of waterborne viruses in drinking water treatment: A review

As the coronavirus disease 2019 continues to spread globally, its culprit, the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 has been brought under scrutiny. In addition to inhalation transmission, the possible fecal-oral viral transmission via water/wastewater has also been brought under the spotlight, necessitating a timely global review on the current knowledge about waterborne viruses in drinking water treatment system - the very barrier that intercepts waterborne pathogens to terminal water users. In this article we reviewed the occurrence, concentration methods, and control strategies, also, treatment performance on waterborne viruses during drinking water treatment were summarized. Additionally, we emphasized the potential of applying the quantitative microbial risk assessment to guide drinking water treatment to mitigate the viral exposure risks, especially when the unregulated novel viral pathogens are of concern. This review paves road for better control of viruses at drinking water treatment plants to protect public health.

Could Nanotechnology Help to End the Fight Against COVID-19? Review of Current Findings, Challenges and Future Perspectives

A serious viral infectious disease was introduced to the globe by the end of 2019 that was seen primarily from China, but spread worldwide in a few months to be a pandemic. Since then, accurate prevention, early detection, and effective treatment strategies are not yet outlined. There is no approved drug to counter its worldwide transmission. However, integration of nanostructured delivery systems with the current management strategies has promised a pronounced opportunity to tackle the pandemic. This review addressed the various promising nanotechnology-based approaches for the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of the pandemic. The pharmaceutical, pharmacoeconomic, and regulatory aspects of these systems with currently achieved or predicted beneficial outcomes, challenges, and future perspectives are also highlighted.

Innovative Nanotechnology a Boon for Fight Against Pandemic COVID–19

COVID – 19 is a contagious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS-CoV2). The rate at which COVID – 19-virus spread from epidemic to pandemic within a short period is quite alarming. As of July 2020, the Dashboard of the World Health Organization (WHO) recorded over 15 million COVID – 19 cases across 213 countries, with mortality of over 620,000. The governments and healthcare agencies responsible for mitigating the virus's spread have adopted several strategies to end the pandemic. However, all hands were on deck to establish the standard treatment modalities of SARS-CoV-2 through inventing new drugs, vaccine candidates, or repurposing the existing medicines and robust diagnostic tools, in addition to other technological innovations. Therefore, nanotechnology’s employment would play a vital role in bringing multidisciplinary ways of developing affordable, reliable, and powerful tools for diagnosis, in addition to personal protection and effective medicines. Additionally, nanosensors' application would significantly aid the diagnoses of the COVID–19 even on asymptomatic patients, and thus would be an essential means for determining its prevalence. Likewise, nanoscale fibers can optimize personal equipment protection and allow their reusability for medical and economic benefits. Accordingly, the literature was intensively reviewed by searching for the combinations of the research keywords in the official scientific databases such as Science Direct, PubMed, and Google Scholar. Hence, this research highlighted the perspective contributions of nanotechnology in the war against the COVID-19 pandemic.

A Carbon Composite Film with Three-Dimensional Reticular Structure for Electromagnetic Interference Shielding and Electro-Photo-Thermal Conversion

The design of flexible wearable electronic devices that can shield electromagnetic waves and work in all weather conditions remains a challenge. We present in this work a low-cost technology to prepare an ultra-thin carbon fabric-graphene (CFG) composite film with outstanding electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) and electro-photo-thermal effect. The compatibility between flexible carbon fabric skeleton and brittle pure graphene matrix empowers this CFG film with adequate flexibility. The reticular fibers and porous structures play a vital role in multiple scattering and absorption of electromagnetic waves. In the frequency range of 30-1500 MHz, the CFG film can achieve a significantly high EMI SE of about 46 dB at tiny thickness (0.182 mm) and density (1.4 g cm^-3) predominantly by absorption. At low safe voltages or only in sunlight, the film can self-heat to its saturation value rapidly in 40 s. Once the electricity or light supply is stopped, it can quickly dissipate heat in tens of seconds. A combination of the EMI SE and the prominent electro-photo-thermal effect further enables such a remarkable EMI shielding film to have more potential applications for communication devices in extreme zones.

Measuring temperature heterogeneities during solar-photothermal heating using quantum dot nanothermometry

Small metallic nanoparticles with appropriate surface plasmon resonance frequencies can be extremely efficient absorbers of solar radiation. This efficient absorption can lead to localized heating and highly heterogeneous temperatures. These unique optical properties have inspired research into the development of environmentally relevant solar-to-heat conversion technologies that are based on the light absorption of nanomaterials. The development of robust, reliable, and straight-forward techniques for measuring spatially resolved temperatures in photothermally heated systems can be an indispensable tool to aid future work in this area. Herein, we consider the application of a fluorescent technique that can measure spatially resolved temperatures in solar photothermal systems using CdSe quantum dots (<10 nm diameter). The local temperature of the quantum dot can be determined by monitoring the shift in its fluorescence wavelength resulting from the dilatation of the lattice with increasing temperature. To exploit this property, we fabricated Au nanorod-quantum dot architectures using linkers of varying lengths, and measured the light induced temperature change increasing more rapidly closer to the surface of an Au nanorod. We also compared the effect of Au nanorod coatings and found that silica coating leads to higher overall temperatures compared to organic stabilized Au nanorods.

Plasmonic nano-antimicrobials: properties, mechanisms and applications in microbe inactivation and sensing

Bacterial, viral and fungal infections pose serious threats to human health and well-being. The continuous emergence of acute infectious diseases caused by pathogenic microbes and the rapid development of resistances against conventional antimicrobial drugs necessitates the development of new and effective strategies for the safe elimination of microbes in water, food or on surfaces, as well as for the inactivation of pathogenic microbes in human hosts. The need for new antimicrobials has triggered the development of plasmonic nano-antimicrobials that facilitate both light-dependent and -independent microbe inactivation mechanisms. This review introduces the relevant photophysical mechanisms underlying these plasmonic nano-antimicrobials, and provides an overview of how the photoresponses and materials properties of plasmonic nanostructures can be applied in microbial pathogen inactivation and sensing applications. Through a systematic analysis of the inactivation efficacies of different plasmonic nanostructures, this review outlines the current state-of-the-art in plasmonic nano-antimicrobials and defines the application space for different microbial inactivation strategies. The advantageous optical properties of plasmonic nano-antimicrobials also enhance microbial detection and sensing modalities and thus help to avoid exposure to microbial pathogens. Sensitive and fast plasmonic microbial sensing modalities and their theranostic and targeted therapeutic applications are discussed.

Plasmonically Modulated Gold Nanostructures for Photothermal Ablation of Bacteria

With the wide utilization of antibiotics, antibiotic-resistant bacteria have been often developed more frequently to cause potential global catastrophic consequences. Emerging photothermal ablation has been attracting extensive research interest for quick/effective eradication of pathogenic bacteria from contaminated surroundings and infected body. In this field, anisotropic gold nanostructures with tunable size/morphologies have been demonstrated to exhibit their outstanding photothermal performance through strong plasmonic absorption of near-infrared (NIR) light, efficient light to heat conversion, and easy surface modification for targeting bacteria. To this end, this review first introduces thermal treatment of infectious diseases followed by photothermal therapy via heat generation on NIR-absorbing gold nanostructures. Then, the usual synthesis and spectral features of diversified gold nanostructures and composites are systematically overviewed with the emphasis on the importance of size, shape, and composition to achieve strong plasmonic absorption in NIR region. Further, the innovated photothermal applications of gold nanostructures are comprehensively demonstrated to combat against bacterial infections, and some constructive suggestions are also discussed to improve photothermal technologies for practical applications.

Versatile Yolk-Shell Encapsulation: Catalytic, Photothermal, and Sensing Demonstration

Here, a novel, versatile synthetic strategy to fabricate a yolk-shell structured material that can encapsulate virtually any functional noble metal or metal oxide nanocatalysts of any morphology in a free suspension fashion is reported. This strategy also enables encapsulation of more than one type of nanoparticle inside a single shell, including paramagnetic iron oxide used for magnetic separation. The mesoporous organosilica shell provides efficient mass transfer of small target molecules, while serving as a size exclusion barrier for larger interfering molecules. Major structural and functional advantages of this material design are demonstrated by performing three proof-of-concept applications. First, effective encapsulation of plasmonic gold nanospheres for localized photothermal heating and heat-driven reaction inside the shell is shown. Second, hydrogenation catalysis is demonstrated under spatial confinement driven by palladium nanocubes. Finally, the surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopic detection of model pollutant by gold nanorods is presented for highly sensitive environmental sensing with size exclusion.

Three-Dimensional-Printed Shape Memory Biomass Composites for Thermal-Responsive Devices

In this study, unique three-dimensional (3D)-printed shape memory biomass composites were prepared by the melt blending and extrusion of polyurethane, polycaprolactone (PCL), and wood flour (WF) with adjustable contents. The addition content of PCL was used to adjust the shape memory transition temperature and improve the shape fixing rate of composites. The crystallization, thermal, mechanical, and shape memory properties of different composites were investigated. The results of X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry tests showed that the crystallization peak and melting temperature of different composites were not obviously changed. As the PCL content increased, the tensile strength of the composites decreased first and then increased, and the elongation at break gradually decreased. Thermal response shape memory test results showed that, when the PCL content was 30 wt.%, the composites had high shape recovery rate and fixed rate (both ∼100%). In addition, carbon black (CB) was added as a photothermal conversion material to the composite with a preferred ratio to achieve the photothermal response shape memory performance. With the addition of CB, the thermal conductivity of composites was improved. Under the same conditions, the thicker the 3D-printed specimens, the longer the specimen shape recovery time; the greater the light intensity, the shorter the specimen shape recovery time. Compared with the composite without CB, the flower model printed with the composites containing CB had a better photothermal response shape memory performance.

Enhanced Pollutant Adsorption and Regeneration of Layered Double Hydroxide-Based Photoregenerable Adsorbent

Efforts to combine photocatalysts with organic and inorganic adsorbents in engineered composite materials have been pursued extensively to harness sunlight for a green, sustainable regeneration of exhausted adsorbent. Recent advances combining benchmark photocatalyst, titanium dioxide (TiO₂), with an inorganic adsorbent, layered double hydroxides (LDHs), have shown potential for an inorganic adsorbent-photocatalyst system but faced critical limitations in realizing practical applications: low adsorption capacity and slow, inefficient photocatalytic regeneration. This study presents an enhanced TiO₂/LDH based material that demonstrates a dramatically increased efficiency for both decontamination through adsorption and subsequent solar, photocatalytic regeneration. The combination of delamination and high temperature treatment of LDH is utilized to drastically enhance the adsorption capacity toward model contaminant Methyl Orange to 1450-1459 mg/g, which is even higher than most commercial and lab-synthesized carbon-based adsorbents. Light-active plasmonic nanoparticles are employed to increase the photocatalytic regeneration performance, and experimental results show that the synthesized composite material regains above 97% of its adsorption capacity for 5 cycles of regeneration and readsorption. Overall, the results of this study demonstrate potential for the development of inorganic multifunctional adsorbents that can harness a variety of chemical reactions without the loss of adsorptivity over long-term use.

Plasmon-enabled degradation of organic micropollutants in water by visible-light illumination of Janus gold nanorods

The development of sustainable methods for the degradation of pollutants in water is an ongoing critical challenge. Anthropogenic organic micropollutants such as pharmaceuticals, present in our water supplies in trace quantities, are currently not remediated by conventional treatment processes. Here, we report an initial demonstration of the oxidative degradation of organic micropollutants using specially designed nanoparticles and visible-wavelength sunlight. Gold "Janus" nanorods (Au JNRs), partially coated with silica to enhance their colloidal stability in aqueous solutions while also maintaining a partially uncoated Au surface to facilitate photocatalysis, were synthesized. Au JNRs were dispersed in an aqueous solution containing peroxydisulfate (PDS), where oxidative degradation of both simulant and actual organic micropollutants was observed. Photothermal heating, light-induced hot electron-driven charge transfer, and direct electron shuttling under dark conditions all contribute to the observed oxidation chemistry. This work not only provides an ideal platform for studying plasmonic photochemistry in aqueous medium but also opens the door for nanoengineered, solar-based methods to remediate recalcitrant micropollutants in water supplies.

Toward Nanotechnology-Enabled Approaches against the COVID-19 Pandemic

The COVID-19 outbreak has fueled a global demand for effective diagnosis and treatment as well as mitigation of the spread of infection, all through large-scale approaches such as specific alternative antiviral methods and classical disinfection protocols. Based on an abundance of engineered materials identifiable by their useful physicochemical properties through versatile chemical functionalization, nanotechnology offers a number of approaches to cope with this emergency. Here, through a multidisciplinary Perspective encompassing diverse fields such as virology, biology, medicine, engineering, chemistry, materials science, and computational science, we outline how nanotechnology-based strategies can support the fight against COVID-19, as well as infectious diseases in general, including future pandemics. Considering what we know so far about the life cycle of the virus, we envision key steps where nanotechnology could counter the disease. First, nanoparticles (NPs) can offer alternative methods to classical disinfection protocols used in healthcare settings, thanks to their intrinsic antipathogenic properties and/or their ability to inactivate viruses, bacteria, fungi, or yeasts either photothermally or via photocatalysis-induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. Nanotechnology tools to inactivate SARS-CoV-2 in patients could also be explored. In this case, nanomaterials could be used to deliver drugs to the pulmonary system to inhibit interaction between angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptors and viral S protein. Moreover, the concept of "nanoimmunity by design" can help us to design materials for immune modulation, either stimulating or suppressing the immune response, which would find applications in the context of vaccine development for SARS-CoV-2 or in counteracting the cytokine storm, respectively. In addition to disease prevention and therapeutic potential, nanotechnology has important roles in diagnostics, with potential to support the development of simple, fast, and cost-effective nanotechnology-based assays to monitor the presence of SARS-CoV-2 and related biomarkers. In summary, nanotechnology is critical in counteracting COVID-19 and will be vital when preparing for future pandemics.

Evaluation and prospects of nanomaterial-enabled innovative processes and devices for water disinfection: A state-of-the-art review

This study provided an overview of established and emerging nanomaterial (NM)-enabled processes and devices for water disinfection for both centralized and decentralized systems. In addition to a discussion of major disinfection mechanisms, data on disinfection performance (shortest contact time for complete disinfection) and energy efficiency (electrical energy per order; E_EO) were collected enabling assessments firstly for disinfection processes and then for disinfection devices. The NM-enabled electro-based disinfection process gained the highest disinfection efficiency with the lowest energy consumption compared with physical-based, peroxy-based, and photo-based disinfection processes owing to the unique disinfection mechanism and the direct mean of translating energy input to microbes. Among the established disinfection devices (e.g., the stirred, the plug-flow, and the flow-through reactor), the flow-through reactor with mesh/membrane or 3-dimensional porous electrodes showed the highest disinfection performance and energy efficiency attributed to its highest mass transfer efficiency. Additionally, we also summarized recent knowledge about current and potential NMs separation and recovery methods as well as electrode strengthening and optimization strategies. Magnetic separation and robust immobilization (anchoring and coating) are feasible strategies to prompt the practical application of NM-enabled disinfection devices. Magnetic separation effectively solved the problem for the separation of evenly distributed particle-sized NMs from microbial solution and robust immobilization increased the stability of NM-modified electrodes and prevented these electrodes from degradation by hydraulic detachment and/or electrochemical dissolution. Furthermore, the study of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was capable of simulating NM-enabled devices, which showed great potential for system optimization and reactor expansion. In this overview, we stressed the need to concern not only the treatment performance and energy efficiency of NM-enabled disinfection processes and devices but also the overall feasibility of system construction and operation for practical application.

Photothermal response of plasmonic nanofillers for membrane distillation

Light-to-heat conversion in plasmonic nanoparticles (NPs) inside polymeric membranes is beneficial for improving the efficiency of membrane distillation for seawater desalination. However, the physical mechanisms ruling photothermal membrane distillation are unclear yet. Here, we model the plasmonic photothermal light-to-heat conversion from Ag, Au, and Cu nanofillers in polymeric membranes for membrane distillation. Photothermal effects in the cases of isolated metallic NPs and their assembly are investigated considering size effects and excitation sources. The increasing content of metallic NPs improves the efficiency of the light-to-heat conversion. For a polymeric membrane, filled with 25% Ag NPs, our model well reproduces the experimental temperature increase of 10 K. Specifically, we find that Ag NPs with a radius of around 30-40 nm are favorite candidates for membrane heating with excitation energy in the visible/near-UV range. The incorporation of a term associated with heat losses into the heat transfer equation well reproduces the cooling effect associated with vaporization at the membrane surface. Compared to Ag NPs, Au and Cu NPs show a broadened absorption cross section and their resonance has a nonlinear behavior with varying the excitation energy, better matching with sunlight radiation spectrum.

Sterilization of Escherichia coli by Photothermal Synergy of WO3-x/C Nanosheet under Infrared Light Irradiation

The application of photocatalytic sterilization technology for the sterilization of water has been broadly studied in recent years. However, developing photocatalysts with high disinfection efficiency remains an urgent challenge. Tungsten trioxide with coexisting oxygen vacancies and carbon coating (WO_3-x/C) has been successfully synthesized toward the photothermal inactivation of Escherichia coli. Oxygen vacancies and carbon coating bring WO_3-x/C strong absorption in the infrared region and enhance the carrier separation efficiency. As a result, a higher sterilization rate is obtained compared to WO₃. WO_3-x/C can completely inactivate E. coli under infrared light within 40 min through photothermal synergy process. During the process of inactivating bacteria over WO_3-x/C, E. coli is killed by the destruction of their cell membrane to decrease the activity of enzymes and release the cell contents, which can be ascribed to the efficient generation of reactive oxygen species (O₂^•- and ^•OH) and thermal effect. This work demonstrates a novel approach for engineering efficient and energy-saving catalysts for water sterilization.

Upconverted emission-driven photothermal conversion with gold nanospheres based on triplet–triplet annihilation

Low-energy visible light was converted into heat energy through the excitation of the localized surface plasmon resonance of gold nanospheres excited by upconverted emission based on triplet–triplet annihilation of organic molecules.

Photothermally-driven thermo-oxidative degradation of low density polyethylene: heterogeneous heating plus a complex reaction leads to homogeneous chemistry

Photothermal heating from embedded nanoparticles, a process whereby visible light is converted into heat resulting in a high temperature in each particle's immediate vicinity, was utilized to degrade low density polyethylene (LDPE) via thermo-oxidation. The spatially-varying steady-state photothermal temperature field is a potential mechanism by which ambient light (e.g. sunlight) could be used to drive chemical reactions within solid materials and may result in a non-uniform pattern of products, an advantage or disadvantage depending on application. Novel approaches to control polymer degradation are of interest because of the goal of remediating plastic waste, including autonomous means to minimize its effect when unconfined in the environment. For thermoplastic auto-oxidation, heterogeneous degradation would likely enhance deleterious micro-fragmentation however, the multi-step, multi-site nature of the reaction mitigated the temperature non-uniformity. A photothermally-heated LDPE nanocomposite with silver nanoparticle and cobalt-stearate additives showed degradation, characterized by ultraviolet-visible and Fourier-transform infrared absorption spectroscopy, electron microscopy, and mechanical testing, nearly identical to that resulting from uniform conventional treatment at the same average temperature.

Nanoparticle Enhanced Interfacial Solar Photothermal Water Disinfection Demonstrated in 3-D Printed Flow-Through Reactors

Heat treatment, i.e., boiling or pasteurization, is the most widely recognized and practiced form of household water treatment. Considering recent advances in the development of light harvesting nanoparticles for solar-to-heat conversion, we envision that a nanomaterial enhanced water heating treatment system could obviate the need to use fuels or electricity to heat water by replacing the energy source with sunlight. In this study, we demonstrate that functional disinfection temperatures can be easily achieved with unconcentrated sunlight using a single layer interfacial photothermal film in direct contact with a tortuous flowing water channel. Photothermal films were fabricated by dispersing high concentrations of light harvesting nanoparticles, carbon black and Au nanorods, into a highly transparent curable polymer. Bench-scale 3-D printed reactors were employed to determine the effect of different parameters on reactor performance, such as channel height, retention time, flow rate, initial water temperature, and light intensity. Simulations demonstrate the scalability of the treatment system, predicting that a reactor footprint of 45 × 45 cm would be required for a photothermal treatment system that could produce 8 L of water per day with 8 h of sunlight at 1 Sun intensity.

Water Disinfection in Rural Areas Demands Unconventional Solar Technologies

Providing access to safe drinking water is a prerequisite for protecting public health. Vast improvements in drinking water quality have been witnessed during the last century, particularly in urban areas, thanks to the successful implementation of large, centralized water treatment plants and the distribution of treated water via underground networks of pipes. Nevertheless, infection by waterborne pathogens through the consumption of biologically unsafe drinking water remains one of the most significant causes of morbidity and mortality in developing rural areas. In these areas, the construction of centralized water treatment and distribution systems is impractical due to high capital costs and lack of existing infrastructure. Improving drinking water quality in developing rural areas demands a paradigm shift to unconventional, innovative water disinfection strategies that are low cost and simple to implement and maintain, while also requiring minimal infrastructure. The implementation of point-of-use (POU) disinfection techniques at the household- or community-scale is the most promising intervention strategy for producing immediate health benefits in the most vulnerable rural populations. Among POU techniques, solar-driven processes are considered particularly instrumental to this strategy, as developing rural areas that lack safe drinking water typically receive higher than average surface sunlight irradiation. Materials that can efficiently harvest sunlight to produce disinfecting agents are pivotal for surpassing the disinfection performance of conventional POU techniques. In this account, we highlight recent advances in materials and processes that can harness sunlight to disinfect water. We describe the physicochemical properties and molecular disinfection mechanisms for four categories of disinfectants that can be generated by harvesting sunlight: heat, germicidal UV radiation, strong oxidants, and mild oxidants. Our recent work in developing materials-based solar disinfection technologies is discussed in detail, with particular focus on the materials' mechanistic functions and their modes of action for inactivation of three common types of waterborne pathogens (i.e., bacteria, virus, and protozoa). We conclude that different solar disinfection technologies should be applied depending on the source water quality and target pathogen due to significant variations on susceptibility of microbial components to disparate disinfectants. In addition, we expect that ample research opportunities exist on reactor design and process engineering for scale-up and improved performance of these solar materials, while accounting for the infrastructure demand and capital input. Although the practical implementation of new treatment techniques will face social and economic challenges that cannot be overlooked, novel technologies such as these can play a pivotal role in reducing water borne disease burden in rural communities in the developing world.

Plasmonics driven engineered pasteurizers for solar water disinfection (SWADIS)

Rampant environmental pollution is the most ubiquitous concern of current world. A sustainable panacea to overarching contamination of water-borne pathogens demands cheap and eco-friendly oriented research. Solar energy is effortlessly accessible in most of the weather conditions and can be used for water decontamination. In this context, Solar Water Disinfection (SWADIS) appears to be feasible solution. Herein we are reporting newly developed Carbon nanoparticles (CNP) which shows absorption of light in broad region extending from Ultraviolet-Visible (UV) to Infrared Spectroscopy (IR). This CNP with pronounced photothermal effect has been used for SWADIS. Photothermal effect of plasmonic nanomaterials has massive potential and has exploited for disinfection of water. Moving towards practical device design we have developed an efficient CNP based Multipurpose Solar Pasteurizer (MSP) and Nano-Solar Pasteurizer (NSP) which can efficiently perform the SWADIS. Result shows that upon irradiation under natural solar radiation pasteurizers can thermally inactivate the bacteria. The system proves to be able to perform 100% bacterial inactivation in sunny days. We also conducted bacterial inactivation experiments by simulating 106 CFU mL^-1 concentration of E. coli in water to mimic field conditions. Results are evident that pasteurizers achieved 100% bacterial inactivation within period of ˜45 min under sunlight.

Antimicrobial Effects of Chemically Functionalized and/or Photo-Heated Nanoparticles

Antibiotic resistance refers to when microorganisms survive and grow in the presence of specific antibiotics, a phenomenon mainly related to the indiscriminate widespread use and abuse of antibiotics. In this framework, thanks to the design and fabrication of original functional nanomaterials, nanotechnology offers a powerful weapon against several diseases such as cancer and pathogenic illness. Smart nanomaterials, such as metallic nanoparticles and semiconductor nanocrystals, enable the realization of novel drug-free medical therapies for fighting against antibiotic-resistant bacteria. In the light of the latest developments, we highlight the outstanding capabilities of several nanotechnology-inspired approaches to kill antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Chemically functionalized silver and titanium dioxide nanoparticles have been employed for their intrinsic toxicity, which enables them to exhibit an antimicrobial activity while, in a different approach, photo-thermal properties of metallic nanoparticles have been theoretically studied and experimentally tested against several temperature sensitive (mesophilic) bacteria. We also show that it is possible to combine a highly localized targeting with a plasmonic-based heating therapy by properly functionalizing nanoparticle surfaces with covalently linked antibodies. As a perspective, the utilization of properly engineered and chemically functionalized nanomaterials opens a new roads for realizing antibiotic free treatments against pathogens and related diseases.

Prussian blue-encapsulated Fe3O4 nanoparticles for reusable photothermal sterilization of water

Waterborne health issues continue to grow despite the large number of available solutions. Current sterilization techniques to fight with waterborne diseases struggle to meet the demands on cost, efficiency and reach. Effective alternatives are pressingly required. Here we introduce Prussian blue coated ferroferric oxide (Fe₃O₄@PB) composites for water sterilization. The composites exhibit superior photothermal inactivation of bacteria under solar-light irradiation, with nearly complete inactivation of bacterial cells in only 15 min. Even for the mixed bacteria in authentic water matrices, the composites show excellent bacterial inactivation performance. Moreover, the highly magnetized iron core of the Fe₃O₄@PB enables magnetic separation and recycling. Multiple cycle runs reveal that Fe₃O₄@PB composites have exceptional stability and reusability. This work demonstrates a scalable, low-cost, high-efficiency and reusable sterilization method to improve water quality and safety.

Solar Photothermal Electrodes for Highly Efficient Microbial Energy Harvesting at Low Ambient Temperatures

Temperature is an important parameter for the performance of bioelectrochemical systems (BESs). Energy-intensive bulk water heating has been usually employed to maintain a desired temperature for the BESs. This study concerns a proof-of-concept of a light-to-heat photothermal electrode for solar heating of a local electroactive biofilm in a BES for efficient microbial energy harvesting at low temperatures as a replacement for bulk water heating approaches. The photothermal electrode was prepared by coating Ti₃ C₂ T_x MXene sunlight absorber onto carbon felt. The as-prepared photothermal electrode could efficiently raise the local temperature of the bioelectrode to approximately 30 °C from low bulk water temperatures (i.e., 10, 15, and 20 °C) under simulated sunlight illumination. As a result, highly efficient microbial energy could be harvested from the low-temperature BES equipped with a photothermal electrode without bulk water heating. This study represents a new avenue for the design and fabrication of electrodes for temperature-sensitive electrochemical and biological systems.

Molybdenum sulfide Co-catalytic Fenton reaction for rapid and efficient inactivation of Escherichia coli

As a typical advanced oxidation technology, the Fenton reaction has been employed for the disinfection, owing to the strong oxidizability of hydroxyl radicals (·OH). However, the conventional Fenton system always exhibits a low H₂O₂ decomposition efficiency, leading to a low production yield of ·OH, which makes the disinfection effect unsatisfactory. Herein, we develop a molybdenum sulfide (MoS₂) co-catalytic Fenton reaction for rapid and highly efficient inactivation of Escherichia coli K-12 (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). As a co-catalyst in the Fe(II)/H₂O₂ Fenton system, MoS₂ can greatly facilitate the Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle reaction by the exposed Mo⁴⁺ active sites, which significantly improves the H₂O₂ decomposition efficiency for the ·OH production. As a result, the MoS₂ co-catalytic Fenton system can reach up to 83.37% of inactivation rate of E. coli just in 1 min and 100% of inactivation rate within 30 min, which increased by 2.5 times than that of the conventional Fenton reaction. Furthermore, the ·OH as the primary reactive oxygen species (ROS) in MoS₂ co-catalytic Fenton reaction was measured and verified by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and photoluminescence (PL). It is demonstrated an increased amount of ·OH generated from the decomposition of H₂O₂ in the presence of MoS₂, which is responsible for the rapid and efficient inactivation of E. coli and S. aureus. This study provides a new perspective for rapid and highly efficient inactivation of bacteria in environmental remediation.
