Molecular Characterization of Cloud Water Samples Collected at the Puy de Dôme (France) by Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometry

Recognition of screening out hierarchical toxic contaminants tuned by quantified pseudo-components from complex engineering co-combustion

Co-combustion of industrial and municipal solid wastes has emerged as the most promising disposal technology, yet its effect on unknown contaminants generation remains rarely revealed due to waste complexity. Hence, six batches of large-scale engineering experiments were designed in an incinerator of 650 t/d, which overcame the inauthenticity and deviation of laboratory tests. 953-1772 non-targeted compounds were screened in fly ash. Targeting the impact of co-combustion, a pseudo-component matrix model was innovatively integrated to quantitatively extract nine components from complex wastes grouped into biomass and plastic. Thus, the influence was evaluated across eight dimensions, covering molecular characteristics and toxicity. The effect of co-combustion with biomass pseudo-components was insignificant. However, co-combustion with high ratios of plastic pseudo-components induced higher potential risks, significantly promoting the formation of unsaturated hydrocarbons, highly unsaturated compounds (DBE≥15), and cyclic compounds by 19 %- 49 %, 17 %- 31 %, and 7 %- 27 %, respectively. Especially, blending with high ratios of PET plastic pseudo-components produced more species of contaminants. Unique 2 Level I toxicants, bromomethyl benzene and benzofuran-2-carbaldehyde, as well as 4 Level II toxicants, were locked, receiving no concern in previous combustion. The results highlighted risks during high proportion plastics co-combustion, which can help pollution reduction by tuning source wastes to enable healthy co-combustion.

Co-hydrothermal carbonization of municipal sludge and agricultural waste to reduce plant growth inhibition by aqueous phase products: Molecular level analysis of organic matter

The organic matter molecular mechanism by which combined hydrothermal carbonization (co-HTC) of municipal sludge (MS) and agricultural wastes (rice husk, spent mushroom substrate, and wheat straw) reduces the inhibitory effects of aqueous phase (AP) products on pak choi (Brassica campestris L.) growth compared to HTC of MS alone is not clear. Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry was used to characterize the differences in organic matter at the molecular level between AP from MS HTC alone (AP-MS) and AP from co-HTC of MS and agricultural waste (co-Aps). The results showed that N-bearing molecules of AP-MS and co-Aps account for 70.6 % and 54.2 %-64.1 % of all molecules, respectively. Lignins were present in the highest proportion (56.3 %-78.5 %) in all APs, followed by proteins and lipids. The dry weight of co-APs hydroponically grown pak choi was 31.6 %-47.6 % higher than that of the AP-MS. Molecules that were poorly saturated and with low aromaticity were preferentially consumed during hydroponic treatment. Molecules present before and after hydroponics were defined as resistant molecules; molecules present before hydroponics but absent after hydroponics were defined as removed molecules; and molecules absent before hydroponics but present after hydroponics were defined as produced molecules. Large lignin molecules were broken down into more unsaturated molecules, but lignins were the most commonly resistant, removed, and produced molecules. Correlation analysis revealed that N- or S-bearing molecules were phytotoxic in the AP. Tannins positively influenced the growth of pak choi. These results provide new insights into potential implementation strategies for liquid fertilizers produced from AP arising from HTC of MS and agricultural wastes.

Peatland Wildfires Enhance Nitrogen-Containing Organic Compounds in Marine Aerosols over the Western Pacific

Peatland wildfires contribute significantly to the atmospheric release of light-absorbing organic carbon, often referred to as brown carbon. In this study, we examine the presence of nitrogen-containing organic compounds (NOCs) within marine aerosols across the Western Pacific Ocean, which are influenced by peatland fires from Southeast Asia. Employing ultrahigh-resolution Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) in electrospray ionization (ESI) positive mode, we discovered that NOCs are predominantly composed of reduced nitrogenous bases, including CHN+ and CHON+ groups. Notably, the count of NOC formulas experiences a marked increase within plumes from peatland wildfires compared to those found in typical marine air masses. These NOCs, often identified as N-heterocyclic alkaloids, serve as potential light-absorbing chromophores. Furthermore, many NOCs demonstrate pyrolytic stability, engage in a variety of substitution reactions, and display enhanced hydrophilic properties, attributed to chemical processes such as methoxylation, hydroxylation, methylation, and hydrogenation that occur during emission and subsequent atmospheric aging. During the daytime atmospheric transport, aging of aromatic N-heterocyclic compounds, particularly in aliphatic amines prone to oxidation and reactions with amine, was observed. The findings underscore the critical role of peatland wildfires in augmenting nitrogen-containing organics in marine aerosols, underscoring the need for in-depth research into their effects on marine ecosystems and regional climatic conditions.

Size-Resolved Molecular Characterization of Water-Soluble Organic Matter in Atmospheric Particulate Matter from Northern China

Atmospheric particulate matter (PM) affects visibility, climate, biogeochemical cycles and human health. Water-soluble organic matter (WSOM) is an important component of PM. In this study, PM samples with size-resolved measurements at aerodynamic cut-point diameters (Dp) of 0.01-18μm were collected in the rural area of Baoding and the urban area of Dalian, Northern China. Non-targeted analysis was adopted for the characterization of the molecule constitutes of WSOM in different sized particles using Fourier transform-ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry. Regardless of the location, the composition of WSOM in Aitken mode particles (aerodynamic diameter < 0.05 μm) was similar. The WSOM in accumulation mode particles (0.05-2 μm) in Baoding was predominantly composed of CHO compounds (84.9%), which were mainly recognized as lignins and lipids species. However, S-containing compounds (64.2%), especially protein and carbohydrates species, accounted for most of the WSOM in the accumulation mode particles in Dalian. The CHO compounds (67.6%-79.7%) contributed the most to the WSOM in coarse mode particles (> 2 μm) from both sites. Potential sources analysis indicated the WSOM in Baoding were mainly derived from biomass burning and oxidation reactions, while the WSOM in Dalian arose from coal combustion, oxidation reactions, and regional transport.

Chemodiversity of organic nitrogen emissions from light-duty gasoline vehicles is governed by engine displacements and driving speed

Organic nitrogen emissions from light-duty gasoline vehicles (LDGVs) is believed to play a pivotal role in atmospheric particulate matter (PM) in urban environments. Here, the characterization of organic nitrogen emitted by LDGVs with varying engine displacements at different speed phases was analyzed using a Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) at molecular level. For the LDGV with small engine displacements, the nitrogen-containing organic (CHON) compounds exhibit higher abundance, molecular weight, oxygen content and aromaticity in the extra-high-speed phase. Conversely, for the LDGV with big engine displacements, more CHON compounds with elevated abundance, molecular weight, oxygen content and aromaticity were observed in the low-speed phase. Our study assumed that the formation of CHON compounds emitted from LDGVs is mainly the oxidation reaction during fuel combustion, so the potential precursor-product pairs related to oxidation process were used to study the degree of combustion reaction. The results show that the highest proportion of oxidation occurs during extra-high-speed phase for LDGV with small engine displacements, and during low-speed phase for LDGV with big engine displacements. These results offer a novel perspective for comprehending the mechanism behind vehicle emissions formation and contribute valuable insights for crafting effective air pollution regulations.

Photochemical evolution of the molecular composition of dissolved organic carbon and dissolved brown carbon from wood smoldering

Recently, extreme wildfires occur frequently around the world and emit substantial brown carbon (BrC) into the atmosphere, whereas the molecular compositions and photochemical evolution of BrC remain poorly understood. In this work, primary smoke aerosols were generated from wood smoldering, and secondary smoke aerosols were formed by the OH radical photooxidation in an oxidation flow reactor, where both primary and secondary smoke samples were collected on filters. After solvent extraction of filter samples, the molecular composition of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) was determined by Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FTICR MS). The molecular composition of dissolved BrC was obtained based on the constraints of DOC formulae. The proportion of dissolved BrC fractions accounted for approximately 1/3-1/2 molecular formulae of DOC. The molecular characteristics of dissolved BrC showed higher levels of carbon oxidation state, double bond equivalents, and modified aromaticity index than those of DOC, indicating that dissolved BrC fractions were a class of organic structures with relatively higher oxidation state, unsaturated and aromatic degree in DOC fractions. The comparative analysis suggested that aliphatic and olefinic structures dominated DOC fractions (contributing to 70.1%-76.9%), while olefinic, aromatic, and condensed aromatic structures dominated dissolved BrC fractions (contributing to 97.5%-99.9%). It is worth noting that dissolved BrC fractions only contained carboxylic-rich alicyclic molecules (CRAMs)-like structures, unsaturated hydrocarbons, aromatic structures, and highly oxygenated compounds. CRAMs-like structures were the most abundant species in both DOC and dissolved BrC fractions. Nevertheless, the specific molecular characteristics for DOC and dissolved BrC fractions varied with subgroups after aging. The results highlight the similarities and differences in the molecular compositions and characteristics of DOC and dissolved BrC fractions with aging. This work will provide insights into understanding the molecular composition of DOC and dissolved BrC in smoke.

Optical Variation and Molecular Transformation of Brown Carbon During Oxidation by NO3• in the Aqueous Phase

The NO3•-driven nighttime aging of brown carbon (BrC) is known to greatly impact its atmospheric radiative forcing. However, the impact of oxidation by NO3• on the optical properties of BrC in atmospheric waters as well as the associated reaction mechanism remain unclear. In this work, we found that the optical variation of BrC proxies under environmentally relevant NO3• exposure depends strongly on their sources, with enhanced light absorptivity for biomass-burning BrC but bleaching for urban aerosols and humic substances. High-resolution mass spectrometry using FT-ICR MS shows that oxidation by NO3• leads to the formation of light-absorbing species (e.g., nitrated organics) for biomass-burning BrC while destroying electron donors (e.g., phenols) within charge transfer complexes in urban aerosols and humic substances, as evidenced by transient absorption spectroscopy and NaBH4 reduction experiments as well. Moreover, we found that the measured rate constants between NO3• with real BrCs (k = (1.8 ± 0.6) × 107 MC-1s-1, expressed as moles of carbon) are much higher than those of individual model organic carbon (OC), suggesting the reaction with OCs may be a previously ill-quantified important sink of NO3• in atmospheric waters. This work provides insights into the kinetics and molecular transformation of BrC during the oxidation by NO3•, facilitating further evaluation of BrC's climatic effects and atmospheric NO3• levels.

Internal exposure potential of water-soluble organic molecules in urban PM2.5 evaluated by non-covalent adductome of human serum albumin

Water-soluble organic molecules (WSOMs) in inhaled PM2.5 can readily translocate from the lungs into the blood circulation, facilitating their distribution to and health effects on distant organs and tissues in the human body. Human serum albumin (HSA), the most abundant protein carrier in the blood, readily binds exogenous substances to form non-covalent adducts and subsequently transports them throughout the circulatory system, thereby indicating their internal exposure. The direct internal exposure of WSOMs in PM2.5 needs to be understood. In this study, the non-covalent HSA-WSOM adductome was developed as a dosimeter to evaluate the internal exposure potential of WSOMs in urban PM2.5. The WSOM composition was acquired from non-target high-resolution mass spectrometry analysis coupled with multiple ionizations. The binding level of HSA-WSOM non-covalent adducts was obtained from surface plasma resonance. Machine learning combined WSOM composition and the binding level of HSA-WSOM non-covalent adducts to screen bindable (also internalizable) WSOMs. The concentration of WSOM ranged from 4 to 13 μg/m3 during our observation period. Of the 17,513 mass spectral features detected, 9,484 contributed to the non-covalent adductome and possessed the internal exposure potential. 102 major contributors accounted for 90.6 % of the HSA-WSOM binding level. The fraction of internalizable WSOMs in PM2.5 varied from 11.9 % to 61.3 %, averaging 26.2 %. WSOMs that have internal exposure potential were primarily lignin-like and lipid-like substances. The HSA-WSOMs non-covalent adductome represents direct internal exposure potential, which can provide crucial insights into the molecular diagnosis of PM2.5 exposure and precise assessments of PM2.5 health effects.

Abundant nitrogenous secondary organic aerosol formation accelerated by cloud processing

Nitrogenous organic (CHON), crucial for secondary organic aerosol (SOA), forms through poorly studied mechanisms in clouds. Our study explores CHON transformation during cloud processes (CPs). These processes play a vital role in enhancing the variety of CHONs, leading to the formation of CHONs with oxygen atom counts ranging from 1 to 10 and double bond equivalent (DBE) values spanning from 2 to 10. We proposed that the CHONs formed during CPs are formed through aqueous phase reactions with CHO compound precursors via nucleophilic attacks by NH3. This scheme can be account for roughly three-quarters of the CHONs by number in cloud water, and near two-thirds of all CHONs are formed through reactions between NH3 and carbonyl-containing biogenic volatile organic compound (BVOC) ozonolysis intermediates. This study provides the first insights into the evolution of CHONs during CPs and reveals the significant roles of CPs in the formation of CHONs.

Occurrence and Formation Mechanism of PCDD/Fs and SCCPs in Chlorinated Paraffin Products

Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) and short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs) can be formed during the production of chlorinated paraffins (CPs). Detection and accurate quantification of PCDD/Fs in CPs are challenging because of their matrix complexity. Therefore, the occurrence and formation mechanisms of PCDD/Fs from CPs have not been studied extensively in the past. In this study, 15 commercial samples including solid and liquid CPs were collected in 2022 from China. The average ΣSCCP concentrations detected in the solid and liquid CPs were 158 and 137 mg/g, respectively. The average International Toxic Equivalent (I-TEQ) values of 2,3,7,8-PCDD/F in solid and liquid CPs were 15.8 pg I-TEQ/g and 15.0 pg I-TEQ/g, respectively. The solid and liquid CPs had different predominant congener groups for SCCPs and PCDD/Fs. Possible formation routes for the generation of PCDD/Fs were analyzed by screening precursors in paraffin and laboratory-scale thermochemical experiments of CPs. The transformation between 2,3,7,8-PCDD/Fs and non-2,3,7,8-PCDD/Fs was recognized by calculating the successive chlorination preference. The first reported occurrence of PCDD/Fs in CP commercial products indicated that exposure to CPs and downstream products might be an assignable source of PCDD/F emission, which is of great significance to further explore the control factors of PCDD/Fs in the whole life cycle of CPs.

Disinfection by-product precursors introduced by sandstorm events: Composition, formation characteristics and potential risks

Sandstorms, a natural meteorological event, occur repeatedly during the dry season and can accumulate large amounts of natural/anthropogenic pollutants during the deposition process, potentially introducing disinfection by-product (DBP) precursors into surface waters. In this study, the characteristics of sandstorm-derived dissolved organic matter (DOM) and its DBP formation potential were elucidated. Overall, sandstorm-derived DOM mainly consisted of low-molecular-weight, low-aromaticity, high-nitrogen organic matter, with a dissolved organic carbon (DOC) release yield of 14.4 mg-DOC/g. The halogenated DBP formation potential (calculated as total organic halogen) of sandstorm-derived DOM was comparable to that of surface water, while the normalized DBP-associated toxicity was 1.96 times higher. Similar to DOM introduced by other depositional pathways, sandstorm-derived DOM also had higher yields of highly cytotoxic DBPs (haloacetaldehydes [HALs], haloacetonitriles [HANs] and halonitromethanes [HNMs]). The average atmospheric deposition flux for DOM during the sandstorm event (50.4 ± 2.1 kg km-2 day-1) was 6.95 times higher than that of dry deposition, indicating a higher probability of contaminant input. Simultaneously, the estimation revealed that the sandstorm will increase the formation potential of toxicity forcing agents, such as HALs, HANs and HNMs, in surface water by 3.87%, 2.39% and 9.04%, respectively. Considering the high frequency of sandstorm events and the sorption of other organic pollutants by sand and dust, the impact of sandstorms on surface water quality should be of concern.

Concealed by darkness: Combination of NMR and HRMS reveal the molecular nature of dissolved organic matter in fractured-rock groundwater and connected surface waters

Detailed molecular composition of solid phase extracted dissolved organic matter (SPEDOM) collected from fractured-rock groundwater was compared to connected surface river water at two different watersheds in the unconfined chalk aquifer of Champagne in France using full scan ultrahigh resolution electrospray and photoionization Fourier transform ion cyclotron mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS), Orbitrap tandem MS (MS/MS) and 1H magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR). 1H NMR spectroscopy indicated that groundwater SPEDOM carried a higher contribution of aliphatic compounds while surface river waters SPEDOM were enriched in carboxyl-rich alicyclic molecules (CRAM), acetate derivatives and oxygenated units. Furthermore, we show here that use of photoionization (APPI(+)) in aquifer studies is key, ionizing about eight times more compounds than ESI in surface river water samples, specifically targeting the dissolved organic nitrogen pool, accounting for more than 50% of the total molecular space, as well as a non-polar, more aromatic fraction; with little overlap with compounds detected by ESI(-) FT-ICR MS. On the other hand, groundwater SPEDOM samples did not show similar selectivity as less molecular diversity was observed in APPI compared to ESI. Mass-difference transformation networks (MDiNs) applied to ESI(-) and APPI(+) FT-ICR MS datasets provided an overview of the biogeochemical relationships within the aquifer, revealing chemical diversity and microbial/abiotic reactions. Finally, the combination of ESI(-) FT-ICR MS and detailed Orbitrap MS/MS analysis revealed a pool of polar, anthropogenic sulfur-containing surfactants in the groundwaters, likely originating from agricultural runoff. Overall, our study shows that in this aquifer, groundwater SPEDOM contains a significantly reduced pool of organic compounds compared to surface river waters, possibly related to a combination of lack of sunlight and adsorption of high O/C formulas to mineral surfaces.

Behavior of organic components and the migration of heavy metals during sludge dewatering by different advanced oxidation processes via optical spectroscopy and molecular fingerprint analysis

A comparative study of the different advanced oxidation processes (Fe(II)-Oxone, Fe(II)-H2O2, and Fe(II)-NaClO) was carried out herein to analyze the characteristics of organic components and the migration of heavy metals in waste activated sludge. With the Fe(II)-Oxone and Fe(II)-H2O2 treatments, sludge dewaterability was significantly improved, however, sludge dewaterability was deteriorated by the Fe(II)-NaClO treatment. The enhanced sludge dewaterability by the Fe(II)-Oxone and Fe(II)-H2O2 treatments was strongly correlated with the shifted organic components, particularly proteins, in soluble extracellular polymeric substances (S-EPS), while the deteriorated sludge dewaterability by the Fe(II)-NaClO treatment was strongly correlated with the over release of organic components from bound EPS (B-EPS) to S-EPS. For both the Fe(II)-Oxone and Fe(II)-H2O2 treatments, the radicals preferentially attacked humic acid-like organic components over the protein-like organic components in S-EPS, while for the Fe(II)-NaClO treatment, interestingly, the radicals preferentially attacked the protein-like organic components in both S-EPS and B-EPS. The hydrophilic functional groups like phenolic OH and CO of polysaccharides may be more preferentially migrated to S-EPS of sludge by the Fe(II)-NaClO treatment compared to the other two treatments. With the Fe(II)-Oxone and Fe(II)-H2O2 treatments, the proportion of aliphatic compounds as well as the much oxygenated organic components with a low desaturation and a low molecular weight increased. While with the Fe(II)-NaClO treatment, the proportion of low oxygenated organic components with a high desaturation and a high molecular weight increased. The concentration of total organic carbon, particularly the concentration of proteins, may be the key factor determining the shift of Zn and Cu from sludge solid to liquid phase, along with the high oxidation extent of organic components and close binding to CHOS and CHON compounds as indicated by density functional theory (DFT) calculation. This study systematically revealed the simultaneous sludge dewatering and migration of heavy metals when the role of organic components was factored into herein.

Assessment of sample freezing as a preservation technique for analysing the molecular composition of dissolved organic matter in aquatic systems

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is widely studied in environmental and biogeochemical sciences, but is susceptible to chemical and biological degradation during sample transport and storage. Samples taken in remote regions, aboard ships, or in large numbers need to be preserved for later analysis without changing DOM composition. Here we compare high-resolution mass spectra of solid phase extractable DOM before and after freezing at -20 °C. We found that freezing increases compositional dissimilarity in DOM by between 0 to 18.2% (median = 2.7% across 7 sites) when comparing replicates that were frozen versus unfrozen, i.e., processed immediately after sampling, as compared with differences between unfrozen replicates. The effects of freezing primarily consisted of a poorer detection limit, but were smaller than other sample preparation and analysis steps, such as solid phase extraction and variable ionisation efficiency. Freezing samples for either 21 or 95 days led to similar and only slight changes in DOM composition, albeit with more variation for the latter. Therefore, we conclude that sample freezing on these time scales should not impede scientific study of aquatic DOM and can be used where it makes logistical sense, such as for large spatial surveys or study of archived samples.

Urban particulate water-soluble organic matter in winter: Size-resolved molecular characterization, role of the S-containing compounds on haze formation

Water-soluble organic matter (WSOM), as a group of ubiquitous components in atmospheric PM, plays a crucial role in global climate change and carbon cycle. In this study, the size-resolved molecular characterization of WSOM in the range of 0.010-18 μm PM was studied to gain insights into their formation processes. The CHO, CHNO, CHOS, CHNOS compounds were identified by the ultrahigh-resolution Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry in ESI source mode. A bimodal pattern of the PM mass concentrations was found in the accumulation and coarse mode. The increasing mass concentration of PM was mainly attributed to the growth of large-size PM with the occurrence of haze. Both Aiken-mode (70.5-75.6 %) and coarse-mode (81.7-87.9 %) particles were proven the main carriers of the CHO compounds, the majority of which were indicated to be the saturated fatty acids and their oxidized derivatives. The S-containing (CHOS and CHNOS) compounds in accumulation-mode (71.5-80.9 %) increased significantly in hazy days, where organosulfates (C₁₁H₂₀O₆S, C₁₂H₂₂O₇S) and nitrooxy-organosulfates (C₉H₁₉NO₈S, C₉H₁₇NO₈S) were confirmed in majority. The S-containing compounds in accumulation-mode particle with high oxygen content (6-8 oxygen atoms), unsaturation degree (DBE < 4), and reactivity could facilitate the particle agglomeration and accelerate the haze formation.

Molecular characteristics, sources and transformation of water-insoluble organic matter in cloud water

Studies have shown that water-insoluble organic matter (WIOM) accounts for a large part of the organic components in cloud water and significantly contributes to brown carbon. However, the molecular characteristics of WIOM in cloud droplets remain unclear, hampering the understanding of their climate effects. In this study, cloud water was collected at a remote mountain site in South China during the winter of 2020, and WIOM was separated by membrane filtration, extracted by methanol, and characterized using Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry coupled with an electrospray ionization source. A total of 697-1637 molecules were identified in WIOM. WIOM is characterized by lower oxidation states of carbon atoms (-1.10 ∼ -0.84 in WIOM vs. -0.58 ∼ -0.51 in water-soluble organic matter (WSOM) on average), higher carbon number (14.12-20.59 vs. 9.87-10.56) and lower unsaturation (double-bond equivalent 4.55-4.95 vs. 4.84-5.23) relative to WSOM. More abundant lipid-like compounds (12.2-41.9% in WIOM vs. <2% in WSOM) but less highly oxygenated compounds (<7% vs. 28.6-35.3%) exist in WIOM. More than 30% of WIOM molecules in cloud water are common with interstitial particles, implying that WIOM in cloud water may originate from aerosol activation and/or collision. Some unique molecules in WIOM in cloud water are identified as aqueous-phase oligomerization products, indicating the aqueous-phase formation of WIOM. Further analysis of the intermolecular relationship shows that WIOM has the potential to transform into WSOM by partitioning into the dissolved phase, oxidation and functionalization by heteroatom-containing groups, representing a previously unidentified pathway for WSOM formation in cloud water. The results provide new insights into the in-cloud chemistry, which would assist in the understanding of the aqueous formation and evolution of WIOM.

Molecular characteristics and biological effects of dissolved organic matter leached from microplastics during sludge hydrothermal treatment

Previous knowledge of dissolved organic matter leached from microplastics (MP-DOM) was mainly based on the aquatic environment. The molecular characteristics and biological effects of MP-DOM in other environments have rarely been examined. In this work, FT-ICR-MS was applied to identify MP-DOM leached from sludge hydrothermal treatment (HTT) at different temperatures, and the plant effects and acute toxicity were investigated. The results showed that the molecular richness and diversity of MP-DOM increased with rising temperature, accompanied by molecular transformation in the meantime. The oxidation was crucial whereas the amide reactions mainly occurred at 180-220 ^oC. MP-DOM promoted root development of Brassica rapa (field mustard) by affecting the expression of genes and the effect was enhanced with rising temperature. Specifically, the lignin-like compounds in MP-DOM down-regulated Phenylpropanoids biosynthesis, while CHNO compounds up-regulated the nitrogen metabolism. Correlation analysis presented that alcohols/esters leached at 120-160 ^oC were responsible for the promotion of root, while glucopyranoside leached at 180-220 ^oC was vital for root development. However, MP-DOM produced at 220 ^oC showed the acute toxicity to luminous bacteria. Considering the further-treatment of sludge, the optimum HTT temperature could be controlled at 180 ^oC. This work provides novel insight into the environmental fate and eco-environmental effects of MP-DOM in sewage sludge.

New insight into soluble extracellular metabolites during sludge bulking process based on excitation-emission matrix spectroscopy and ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry

Soluble extracellular metabolites (SEM) produced by microorganisms might significantly change during sludge bulking, which is a major operational problem caused by the excessive growth of filamentous bacteria. However, knowledge remains limited about the dynamics and potential role of SEM in the bulking of sludge. In this study, filamentous bulking was simulated in a laboratory-scale reactor and changes to SEM characteristics during the bulking process were investigated using excitation-emission matrix spectroscopy and ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. SEM components changed significantly at different phases of sludge bulking. Changes in SEM were closely correlated with the structure of the bacterial community. Based on the EEM profiles, significant increases in fulvic acid-like and humic acid-like substances in SEM were observed with the development of filamentous bulking. The degree of humification in SEM showed a clear increasing trend. Untargeted extracellular metabolomic analysis showed that the intensity of berberine and isorhamnetin in SEM increased significantly during the bulking phase, which might synergistically facilitate the development of filamentous bulking.

Molecular transformation of organic nitrogen in Antarctic penguin guano-affected soil

Organic nitrogen (ON) is an important participant in the Earth's N cycle. Previous studies have shown that penguin feces add an abundance of nutrients including N to the soil, significantly changing the eco-environment in ice-free areas in Antarctica. To explore the molecular transformation of ON in penguin guano-affected soil, we collected guano-free weathered soil, modern guano-affected soil from penguin colonies, ancient guano-affected soil from abandoned penguin colonies, and penguin feces from the Ross Sea region, Antarctica, and Fourier transform ion cyclotron mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) was used to investigate the chemical composition of water-extractable ON. By comparing the molecular compositions of ON among different samples, we found that the number of ON compounds (>4,000) in weathered soil is minimal, while carboxylic-rich alicyclic-like molecules (CRAM-like) are dominant. Penguin feces adds ON into the soil with > 10,000 CHON, CHONS and CHN compounds, including CRAM-like, lipid-like, aliphatic/ peptide-like molecules and amines in the guano-affected soil. After the input of penguin feces, macromolecules continue to degrade, and other ON compounds tend to be oxidized into relatively stable CRAM-like molecules, this is an important transformation process of ON in guano-affected soils. We conclude the roles of various forms of ON in the N cycle are complex and diverse. Combined with previous studies, ON eventually turns into inorganic N and is lost from the soil. The lost N ultimately returns to the ocean and the food web, thus completing the N cycle. Our study preliminarily reveals the molecular transformation of ON in penguin guano-affected soil and is important for understanding the N cycle in Antarctica.

How Well Do We Handle the Sample Preparation, FT-ICR Mass Spectrometry Analysis, and Data Treatment of Atmospheric Waters?

FT-ICR MS (Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry) analysis has shown great potential to aid in the understanding of the extremely high molecular diversity of cloud water samples. The main goal of this work was to determine the differences in terms of formula assignment for analytical (i.e., measurement replicates) and experimental replicates of a given cloud water sample. The experimental replicates, obtained by solid phase extraction, were also compared to the results obtained for freeze-dried samples to evaluate whether the presence of salts interferes with the analysis. Two S/N ratios, generally adopted for atmospheric samples, were evaluated, and three different algorithms were used for assignment: DataAnalysis 5.3 (Bruker), Composer (Sierra Analytics), and MFAssignR (Chemical Advanced Resolution Methods Lab). In contrast to other works, we wanted to treat this comparison from the point of view of users, who usually must deal with a simple list of m/z ratios and intensity with limited access to the mass spectrum characteristics. The aim of this study was to establish a methodology for the treatment of atmospheric aqueous samples in light of the comparison of three different software programs, to enhance the possibility of data comparison within samples.

Deciphering the structural characteristics and molecular transformation of dissolved organic matter during the electrolytic oxygen aerobic composting process

Electrolytic oxygen aerobic composting (EOAC) effectively treats organic solid waste by using in-situ electrolytic oxygen for aeration. However, the fundamental mechanism of compost maturity is still unclear. Therefore, we comprehensively characterized dissolved organic matter (DOM) transformation closely related to compost maturity during EOAC. Excitation-emission matrix-parallel factor (EEM-PARAFAC) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis confirmed that EOAC quickly decreased organic matter and increased humus substances, accelerating the compost humification process compared with conventional aerobic composting. Electrospray ionization (ESI) Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) analysis reveals that the double bound equivalent and aromaticity index during EOAC are higher than in conventional aerobic composting (CAC), suggesting more aromatic compounds in EOAC. DOM's detailed transformation investigation suggested that low O/C and high H/C compounds were preferentially decomposed during EOAC. Our investigation firstly extends the in-depth molecular mechanisms of humification during EOAC, and reveals its practical engineering applications.

Does Snowfall Introduce Disinfection By-product Precursors to Surface Water?

Snow with large specific surface area and strong adsorption capacity can effectively adsorb atmospheric pollutants, which could/might lead to the increase of disinfection by-product (DBP) precursors in surface water. In this study, the contents and characteristics of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in meltwater were investigated, and DBP formation and the DBP-associated cytotoxicity index during chlorination of meltwater was first explored. Overall, meltwater exhibited high nitrogen contents. Meltwater-derived DOM was mainly composed of organics with low molecular weights, low aromaticity, and high unsaturated degrees. DBP formation potentials and cytotoxicity indexes in chlorinated meltwater were positively correlated with air quality index and were significantly impacted by snowfall stages. The trihalomethane and haloacetic acid yields from meltwater were relatively low, while yields of highly cytotoxic DBPs, especially halonitromethanes (6.3-10.8 μg-HNMs/mg-DOC), were significantly higher than those of surface water (1.7 μg-HNMs/mg-DOC). Notably, unsaturated nonaromatic organic nitrates in meltwater were important precursors of halonitromethanes. The actual monitoring results showed that snowfall significant increased the haloacetaldehydes and nitrogenous DBP formation levels of surface water. Considering increased DBP formation and DBP-associated toxicity, it was demonstrated that DOM derived from snowfall in atmosphere-polluted areas could deteriorate surface water quality and pose potential risks to drinking water.

Effect of photooxidation on size distribution, light absorption, and molecular compositions of smoke particles from rice straw combustion

Organic aerosol (OA) emitted from biomass burning (BB) impacts air quality and global radiation balance. However, the comprehensive characterization of OA remains poorly understood because of the complex evolutionary behavior of OA in atmospheric processes. In this work, smoke particles were generated from rice straw combustion. The effect of OH radicals photooxidation on size distribution, light absorption, and molecular compositions of smoke particles was systematically investigated. The results showed that the median diameters of smoke particles increased by a factor of approximately 1.2 after photooxidation. In the particle compositions, although both non-polar fractions (n-hexane-soluble organic carbon, HSOC) and polar fractions (water-soluble organic carbon, WSOC) underwent photobleaching after aging, the photobleaching properties of HSOC (1.87-2.19) was always higher than that of WSOC (1.52-1.33). Besides, the light-absorbing properties of HSOC were higher than that of WSOC, showing a factor of approximately 1.75 times for mass absorption efficiency at 365 nm (MAE₃₆₅). Consequently, the simple forcing efficiency (SFE) caused by absorption showed that HSOC has higher radiation effects than WSOC. After photooxidation, the concentration of 16 PAHs in HSOC fractions significantly decreased by 15.3%-72.5%. In WSOC fractions, the content of CHO, CHONS, and CHOS compounds decreased slightly, while the content of CHON compounds increased. Meantime, the variations in molecular properties supported the decrease in light absorption of WSOC fractions. These results reveal the aging behavior of smoke particles, then stress the importance of non-polar organic fractions in particles, providing new insights into understanding the atmospheric pollution caused by BB smoke particles.

Variabilities in Primary N-Containing Aromatic Compound Emissions from Residential Solid Fuel Combustion and Implications for Source Tracers

Nitroaromatic compounds (NACs) not only are strongly absorbing chromophores but also adversely affect human health. NACs can be emitted from incomplete combustions and can derive secondarily through photochemical reactions. Here, emission experiments were conducted for 31 fuel-stove combinations to elucidate variations in, and influencing factors of, NAC emission factors (EF_∑NACs) and to explore potential tracers for different combustion sources. EF_∑NACs varied by 2 orders of magnitude among different combinations. Differences in fuel type contributed more than the stove difference to the observed variation. EF_∑NACs for biomass pellets was approximately 66% lower than that for raw biomass, although the bulk organic and brown carbon EFs were 95% lower. 2-Nitro-1-naphthol was the most abundant individual compound, followed by 4-nitrocatechol, while acid compounds (salicylic acid and benzoic acid) were low in abundance (<1%). Substantially different profiles were observed between coal and biomass burning emissions. Biomass burning had more single-ring-based phenolic compounds with more 4-nitrocatechol, while in coal combustion, more two-ring products were produced. This study demonstrated much lower ratios of 2-nitro-1-naphthol/4-nitrocatechol for biomass in both traditional (2.0 ± 3.5) and improved stoves (3.0 ± 2.1) than for coals (15 ± 6). Coal and biomass burning differed in not only EF_∑NACs but also compound profile, consequently leading to distinct health and climate impacts; moreover, the ratio of 2-nitro-1-naphthol/4-nitrocatechol may be used in source apportionment of NACs.

Dwindling aromatic compounds in fine aerosols from chunk coal to honeycomb briquette combustion

With the implementation of clean coal policy in China, the chunk coal has been gradually replaced by honeycomb briquette in domestic energies. In this study, the molecular composition of fine particles (PM_2.5) from chunk coal and honeycomb briquette combustion is characterized using the Fourier transform-ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS). More than 6000 molecular formulae were detected in each PM_2.5 sample. A remarkable decrease in unsaturation and aromatic compounds was found from chunk coal to honeycomb briquette derived aerosols. Around 73.6% of the unique CHON compounds in chunk coal are considered to have aromatic structures, while it decreased to 7.3% in honeycomb briquette. Most of these nitroaromatics detected only in chunk coal are highly carcinogenic and mutagenic with 4-6 rings. Moreover, the aromatic compounds in sulfur-containing compounds also showed a significant decrease. Meanwhile, because of the perforated shape and the additives added during the production of honeycomb briquettes, there are more heteroatoms-containing molecules released from honeycomb briquette combustion, which are highly functional compounds with high molecular weight, high degree of oxidation, and low volatility. Our results provide molecular level evidence that the transformation from chunk coal to honeycomb briquette can effectively reduce the emission of aromatic compounds, which is beneficial to assessing and reducing the impacts to climate change as well as human health.

Molecular characterization of nitrogen-containing organic compounds in fractionated atmospheric humic-like substances (HULIS) and its relationship with optical properties

Diverse nitrogen-containing organics are important components of humic-like substances (HULIS) in the atmosphere. In this study, organic components in particulate matter (PM) samples representing multiple sources were separated by successive solvent fractionation, which were then analyzed by mass spectrometric and optical instruments. The CHON compounds were eluted and clustered into the Low-polar, Medium-polar, and High-polar fractions, and discrepancies of the polar-fractions were particularly reflected by molecular descriptors such as aromaticity, oxygen content and molecular weight. In addition, the results from the light-absorbing parameters (i.e., MAE₃₆₅ and SUVA₂₅₄) underscored the importance of the Low-polar and High-polar fractions on optical absorption properties. The Low-polar fraction accounted for 40% of the cumulative SUVA₂₅₄ values, suggesting significant content of ultraviolet-absorbing organics. The High-polar fraction contributed 52% of the cumulative MAE₃₆₅ values, indicating abundant light absorption capacity and efficiency. Significant improvements were made on statistical analysis of multidimensional data by a combination of the molecular descriptors and optical parameters. Molecular structures, including condensed aromatic, lignin-like, and aliphatic compounds observed in distinct electrospray ionization modes, were found as main contributors to the light absorption capacity and the abundances of fluorophores in individual polar-fractions. Differential contributions of molecular characteristics on types and abundances of fluorophores were further found among the samples of multiple sources. Conclusions obtained from this successive solvent fractionation experiment could promote development of the pretreatment method for exploring the potential light-absorbing organics, which also provide insights into the emission sources of organics that are related to specific light absorption and fluorescence properties.

Identification of emerging organic pollutants from solid waste incinerations by FT-ICR-MS and GC/Q-TOF-MS and their potential toxicities

Emissions from the incineration of solid waste are a global public health concern, but little attention has been paid to previously unrecognized chemical compounds that are generated by waste incineration and released into the atmosphere. We conducted nontarget analysis of organic chemicals formed during waste incineration by Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry and gas chromatography-quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Using toxicity data in the ToxCast library and predicted toxicity data for traditional priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin, we prioritized 13 compounds including hexachloro-1,3-butadiene, 9 of which are reported here for the first time as constituents of emissions from the incineration of solid waste and hexachloro-1,3-butadiene was included in the Stockholm Convention in 2017. The predicted activity of these pollutants to androgen receptors and to the aryl hydrocarbon receptor were comparable to, or higher than, the 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin and benzo[a]pyrene. In addition, some alkylated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and heteroatom polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were also identified in solid waste incineration processes, peak areas of which were 1-2 orders of magnitude higher than dioxins and 1-3 orders of magnitude lower than their parent polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Our study can provide information for better recognizing and regulating the emissions of organic pollutants formed by the incineration of solid waste.

Molecular characterization of the composition and transformation of dissolved organic matter during the semi-permeable membrane covered hyperthermophilic composting

Current knowledge of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in semi-permeable membrane-covered thermophilic compost (smHTC) is limited. Therefore, this study provided a comprehensive characterization of composition and transformation of DOM in smHTC using multiple spectroscopic methods and ultrahigh resolution mass spectrometry. The results showed that the values of SUVA₂₈₀, SUVA₂₅₄, A_240-400 (0.042, 0.048, 34.193) in smHTC were higher than those of conventional thermophilic composting (cTC) (0.030, 0.037, 18.348), and the increment of P_V,n in smHTC were 2.4 times higher than that of cTC. These results suggested that smHTC accelerated the humification process by promoting the degradation of labile DOM and the production of humus-like substances. Mass spectrometry further confirmed that the DOM of smHTC possessed higher degree of aromatization and humification, based on the lower H/C (1.14), higher aromaticity index (0.34) and double bond equivalence (10.36). Additionally, smHTC increased the proportion of carboxyl-rich, unsaturated and aromatic compounds, and simultaneously improved the degradation of aliphatic/proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, along with even some refractory substances such as CHO subcategory (24.1%), especially lignin-like structures (14.8%). This investigation provided molecular insights into the composition and transformations of DOM in smHTC, and extended the current molecular mechanisms of humification in composting.

Source and formation process impact the chemodiversity of rainwater dissolved organic matter along the Yangtze River Basin in summer

Rainwater dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays an important role in the biogeochemical cycle and evolution of organic matter in the land-atmosphere interface. To better understand their sources and molecular composition in the atmosphere, rainwater samples were collected at six different locations along the Yangtze River Basin. Based on the application of a combined approach including excitation-emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence and Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS), various sources (terrestrial, anthropogenic, and autochthonous sources) of rainwater DOM were revealed. Results show that the derivatives of biogenic volatile organic compounds were widely distributed and contributed to rainwater DOM along the Yangtze River Basin. In the up-river city Batang, rainwater DOM was affected by the long-range atmospheric transport due to the Indian summer monsoon. Lijiang, a city on the southeastern edge of Tibetan plateau, was related to strong local biomass burning. The industrial cities of Panzhihua and Luzhou showed large differences in organic composition due to distinct industrial types. Fuling, a district in Chongqing Municipality, was significantly contributed by aged organics from biomass burning. While rainwater DOM in Shanghai, a coastal megacity, contained a high fraction of sea spray organics. Further, more than 70% of rainwater DOM molecules are associated with 36 typical transformation mechanisms during rainwater-scavenging processes, e.g., oxidation reactions, dealkylation and decarboxylation. Our study demonstrates that local natural and anthropogenic emissions and climatic conditions strongly shaped the chemodiversity and possible precursor-product pairs of rainwater DOM along the Yangtze River Basin, which helps to better understand the biogeochemical cycles of organic matter in a large-scale watershed under the influence of human activities.

Light absorption properties and molecular compositions of water-soluble and methanol-soluble organic carbon emitted from wood pyrolysis and combustion

Organic carbon (OC) emitted from biomass burning (BB) plays an important role in the global radiation budget. In this work, primary OC emitted from wood pyrolysis and combustion under nitrogen (N₂) and air conditions in a tube furnace was investigated. The absorption spectra, chemical functional groups, and molecular compositions of OC were analyzed using UV-Vis-NIR spectrophotometer, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS), respectively. The light absorption properties showed that the mass absorption efficiency at 365 nm (MAE₃₆₅) of methanol-soluble OC (MSOC) is 3.1-3.8 times higher than that of water-soluble OC (WSOC). Moreover, the MAE₃₆₅ values derived from the N₂ pyrolysis atmosphere are higher than that from the air atmosphere for both MSOC and WSOC. These results indicated that OC extracted by methanol has higher light absorption, especially for the OC emitted from the N₂ pyrolysis atmosphere. Although the FTIR spectra showed identical functional groups for the OC from the air and N₂ conditions, molecular compositions from the FT-ICR MS analysis presented significant differences. The molecular weight (MW), double bonds equivalent (DBE), DBE/C, and modified aromaticity index (AI_mod) of extracted OC showed higher values in MSOC than those in WSOC, and higher values under the N₂ atmosphere than those under the air atmosphere. In addition, MAE₃₆₅ showed positive correlations with MW (r = 0.94), DBE (r = 0.88), DBE/C (r = 0.96), and AI_mod (r = 0.97), whereas negative correlations with H/C (r = -0.97), O/C (r = -0.90), N/C (r = -0.88), and S/C (r = -0.93). These results indicated that molecules with larger MW and a high level of unsaturation and aromaticity present higher light absorption, while molecules with high elemental ratios of H/C, O/C, N/C, and S/C are adverse to light absorption.

Molecular chemodiversity of water-soluble organic matter in atmospheric particulate matter and their associations with atmospheric conditions

Water-soluble organic matter (WSOM) is a complex mixture of organic compounds affecting global climate change and carbon cycle. Herein, Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) was used for identification of WSOM molecular compositions in annual atmospheric particulate matter with diameters ≤10 μm (PM₁₀). Totally 6538 unambiguous monoisotopic molecular formulas were assigned to WSOM with m/z values concentrating in 150-600 Da. The CHO compounds with high unsaturation degrees contributed most (51.7-52.1%) to WSOM in spring and summer. However, the S-containing compounds (CHOS and CHNOS) with higher O/C and H/C ratios accounted for 56.8-63.2% of WSOM in autumn and winter. Temperature (r = 0.82) and O₃ (r = 0.89) showed higher correlation with CHO compounds, which were mainly aliphatics and highly unsaturated structures with high oxygen compounds (80.7-90.8%). The concentrations of SO₄^2- (r = 0.33) and NO₃^- (r = 0.46) in PM₁₀ both showed a positive correlation with the abundances of the S-containing compounds due to their direct participation in atmospheric reactions. Among them, 96-100% and 78-96% of the CHOS and CHNOS compounds were confirmed to be organosulfates (OSs) and nitrooxy-organosulfates (NOSs) by MS/MS analysis, respectively. These findings illustrate the strong association of atmospheric conditions with molecular chemodiversity of WSOM.

Acidification impacts on the molecular composition of dissolved organic matter revealed by FT-ICR MS

Solid-phase extraction (SPE) is a traditional pretreatment procedure widely used for dissolved organic matter (DOM) desalination and enrichment prior to the Fourier transform-ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) analysis, and the extracts are usually acidified to pH = 2 with hydrochloric acid (HCl) before passing through the cartridge. However, little is known about the effects of acidification on the integrity and molecular composition of DOM. Here, the differences in the molecular compositions in acidified and nonacidified DOM samples of soil, seawater and atmospheric aerosol were performed by FT-ICR MS. The results showed that the quantity and intensity of aromatic compounds with high oxygen content (e.g., polyphenols, tannin-like and highly oxygenated organic compounds) were greatly enhanced after acidification, while highly saturated compounds (lipid-like and aliphatic/peptide-like) were absent. The underlying reason is the variation of solubility and hydrolysis of DOM under acidic conditions. Meanwhile, the effect of acidification on the molecular composition of DOM was also dependent on their original environmental media. Based on these results, we suggest that the extracts of soil samples are selectively acidified according to the focus of research, while the extract is acidified for seawater samples and the pH of the extract can be unadjusted for aerosol samples before the SPE procedure. These findings provide a reference for the selection of suitable pretreatment methods for different experimental purposes and for the comprehensive characterization of samples with different properties.

Molecular Characterization of Nitrogen-Containing Compounds in Humic-like Substances Emitted from Biomass Burning and Coal Combustion

N-containing organic compounds (NOCs) in humic-like substances (HULIS) emitted from biomass burning (BB) and coal combustion (CC) were characterized by ultrahigh-resolution mass spectrometry in the positive electrospray ionization mode. Our results indicate that NOCs include CHON+ and CHN+ groups, which are detected as a substantial fraction in both BB- and CC-derived HULIS, and suggest that not only BB but also CC is the potential important source of NOCs in the atmosphere. The CHON+ compounds mainly consist of reduced nitrogen compounds with other oxygenated functional groups, and straw- and coal-smoke HULIS exhibit a lower degree of oxidation than pine-smoke HULIS. In addition, the NOCs with higher N atoms (N₂ and/or N₃) generally bear higher modified aromaticity index (AI_mod) values and are mainly contained in BB HULIS, especially in straw-smoke HULIS, whereas the NOCs with a lower N atom (N₁) always have relatively lower AI_mod values and are the dominant NOCs in CC HULIS. These findings imply that the primary emission from CC may be a significant source of N₁ compounds, whereas high N number (e.g., N_2-3) compounds could be associated with burning of biomass materials. Further study is warranted to distinguish the NOCs from more sources.

FT-ICR mass spectrometry for molecular characterization of water-insoluble organic compounds in winter atmospheric fine particulate matters

Water-insoluble organic compounds (WIOCs) are an important fraction of atmospheric fine particulate matters (PM_2.5), which could affect the climate system and threaten human health potentially. In this study, molecular characterization of WIOCs in PM_2.5 were investigated by 15 T Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) with atmospheric pressure photoionization (APPI) source in positive ion mode. A total of 2573 and 1875 molecular formulas were identified in WIOCs extracted by dichloromethane, which were collected in hazy and normal days, respectively. The identified molecular formulas were further classified into four major subgroups, including CH, CHN, CHO and CHNO compounds. CHO compounds predominated in WIOCs, accounting for more than 60% in both samples. CHNO compounds (26.6%) and CH compounds (16.1%) were the second highest subgroups in WIOCs from the hazy days and normal days, respectively. The relative abundance and number of nitro-substituted aromatic compounds were significantly higher in hazy days than in normal days. The molecular composition of WIOCs was more complex in hazy days while more aromatic compounds were identified in normal days.

Unexpected molecular diversity of brown carbon formed by Maillard-like reactions in aqueous aerosols

Atmospheric brown carbon (BrC) exerts a key impact on the global radiative balance due to its light-absorbing properties. Maillard-like reactions between carbonyl and amino compounds have been identified as an important pathway for forming secondary BrC. Although optical properties have been widely studied, the molecular composition of secondary BrC generated in Maillard chemistry remains unclear, resulting in a knowledge gap to understand its formation and light-absorbing mechanism. In this study, a combination of optical spectroscopy, ¹H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) was employed to comprehensively characterize the chemical and light-absorbing characteristics of secondary BrC. The results indicate that both the light-absorbing and molecular characteristics of secondary BrC were highly related to the structures of their precursors. Organic amine precursors consistently result in enhanced light-absorbing capacities of BrC compared to ammonium, but have inconsistent effects on the molecular diversity of BrC. Compared to amino precursors (i.e., glycine, ethylamine, propylamine, and ammonium), carbonyl precursors play a more important role in determining the molecular diversity of BrC. Different from black carbon, the light-absorbing products from Maillard-like reactions are mainly nitrogen-containing heterocycles. Unexpectedly, 35–64% of molecular formulae detected in real atmospheric samples were found in simulated Maillard reaction products, implying a potentially important contribution of Maillard chemistry to the atmospheric organic molecular pool. These results will improve our understanding of the formation and molecular diversity of BrC, and further help to manage emissions of secondary aerosol precursors.

Novel Insights into the Molecular-Level Mechanism Linking the Chemical Diversity and Copper Binding Heterogeneity of Biochar-Derived Dissolved Black Carbon and Dissolved Organic Matter

Biochar-derived dissolved black carbon (DBC) varies in chemical composition and significantly affects the environmental fate of metal ions. However, the intrinsic molecular composition of DBC fractions and their molecular interaction mechanisms with metal ions remain unclear. We propose a novel, molecular-level covariant binding mechanism to comparatively interpret the heterogeneities, active sites, and sequential responses of copper binding with molecular compounds in DBC and natural dissolved organic matter (DOM). Relatively large proportions of lipid/aliphatic/peptide-like compounds with low mass distributions and lignin-like compounds with oxidized/unsaturated groups existed in acidic- and alkaline-extracted DBC, respectively. A larger percentage of tannin-like/condensed aromatic compounds and higher average conditional stability constants (logK̅_Cu) of visible fluorescent components were found for DOM than for DBC. Overall, 200-320 Da and 320-480 Da molecular components contributed significantly to the logK̅_Cu values of UVA and visible fluorescent components, respectively, in DBC/DOM. Nitrogenous groups likely exhibited stronger binding affinities than phenolic/carboxylic groups. The sequential copper-binding responses of molecular compounds in DBC/DOM generally followed the order lipid/aliphatic/peptide-like compounds → tannin-like compounds → condensed aromatic compounds. These insights will improve the prediction of the potential effects of DBC on various contaminants and the risks of biochar application to ecosystems.

Molecular Dynamics and Light Absorption Properties of Atmospheric Dissolved Organic Matter

The light-absorbing organic aerosol referred to as brown carbon (BrC) affects the global radiative balance. The linkages between its molecular composition and light absorption properties and how environmental factors influence BrC composition are not well understood. In this study, atmospheric dissolved organic matter (ADOM) in 55 aerosol samples from Guangzhou was characterized using Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry and light absorption measurements. The abundant components in ADOM were aliphatics and peptide-likes (in structure), or nitrogen- and sulfur-containing compounds (in elemental composition). The light absorption properties of ADOM were positively correlated with the levels of unsaturated and aromatic structures. Particularly, 17 nitrogen-containing species, which are identified by a random forest, characterized the variation of BrC absorption well. Aggregated boosted tree model and nonmetric multidimensional scaling analysis show that the BrC composition was largely driven by meteorological conditions and anthropogenic activities, among which biomass burning (BB) and OH radical were the two important factors. BrC compounds often accumulate with elevated BB emissions and related secondary processes, whereas the photolysis/photooxidation of BrC usually occurs under high solar radiance/^•OH concentration. This study first illuminated how environmental factors influence BrC at the molecular level and provided clues for the molecular-level research of BrC in the future.

Molecular insights into the effects of pyrolysis temperature on composition and copper binding properties of biochar-derived dissolved organic matter

Biochar-derived dissolved organic matter (BDOM), which has a substantial impact on the environmental behavior of heavy metals, is critical for understanding the environmental efficacy of biochar. Here, we used a suite of advanced spectroscopic and mass spectroscopic methods to investigate the relationship among the pyrolysis temperature of biochar, composition of BDOM, and interactions of BDOM with Cu. The binding affinity of BDOM and Cu showed incredibly increase, with the increasing pyrolysis temperature (300-500 °C) which promoted the release of condensed aromatic compounds and oxygen-containing functional groups from biochar into dissolved phase. A notable difference in the sequences binding with Cu was occurred during the changing pyrolysis temperature. The amide only involved in the binding process between Cu and BDOM at low-temperature (300 and 400 °C), whereas phenolic only associated with the such binding process at high-temperature (500 °C). Apart from this, the carboxyl and polysaccharides took part in the binding process of Cu with BDOM, no matter how higher the temperature is. A further analysis by X-ray absorption spectroscopy revealed that bidentate carboxylic-Cu complexes appear to be the predominant binding pattern for Cu to BDOM. Our results might contribute to provide novel information for the environment applications of biochar.

Biofilm development of Bacillus siamensis ATKU1 on pristine short chain low-density polyethylene: A case study on microbe-microplastics interaction

A low-density polyethylene (LDPE) degrading bacterial strain (ATKU1) was isolated (99.86% similar with Bacillus siamensis KCTC 13613^T) from a plastic dumping site to study interactions between microplastics (< 5 mm) and microorganisms. The strain was found (by scanning electron microscopy) to form biofilm on the microplastic surface after its interaction with LDPE (avg. M_w~4,000 Da and avg. M_n~1,700 Da) as a sole carbon source. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) showed the biofilm's 3-D developmental patterns and significantly increased Young's modulus of the LDPE surface after microbial treatment. Most of the viable bacteria attached to biofilms rather than media, which suggested their ability to utilize LDPE. Absorption bands of carbonyl, alkenyl, acyl, ester, primary-secondary alcohol, alkene groups and nitric oxides were found on the treated LDPE particles using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. Fourier transform-ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry of the media indicated compositional shifts of the compounds after treatment (i.e., increase in the degree of unsaturation and increment in oxygen-to-carbon ratio) and presence of unsaturated hydrocarbons, polyketides, terpenoids, aliphatic/peptides, dicarboxylic acids, lipid-like compounds were hinted. The plastic degrading abilities of Bacillus siamensis ATKU1 suggest its probable application for large scale plastic bioremediation facility.

High Molecular Diversity of Organic Nitrogen in Urban Snow in North China

Snow serves as a vital scavenging mechanism to gas-phase and particle-phase organic nitrogen substances in the atmosphere, providing a significant link between land-atmosphere flux of nitrogen in the surface-earth system. Here, we used optical instruments (UV-vis and excitation-emission matrix fluorescence) and a Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometer (FT-ICR MS) to elucidate the molecular composition and potential precursors of snow samples collected simultaneously at four megacities in North China. The elemental O/N ratio (≥3), together with the preference in the negative ionization mode, indicates that the one and two nitrogen atom-containing organics (CHON₁ and CHON₂) in snow were largely in the oxidized form (as organic nitrates, -ONO₂). This study assumed that scavenging of particle-phase and gas-phase organic nitrates might be significant sources of CHON in precipitation. A gas-phase oxidation process and a particle-phase hydrolysis process, at a molecular level, were used to trace the potential precursors of CHON. Results show that more than half of the snow CHON molecules may be related to the oxidized and hydrolyzed processes of atmospheric organics. Potential formation processes of atmospheric organics on a molecular level provide a new concept to better understand the sources and scavenging mechanisms of organic nitrogen species in the atmosphere.

Recognition of the molecular characterization and mechanisms of heterogeneously formed organic pollutants from metallurgical industries by FT-ICR-MS and GC/Q-TOF-MS

Emissions of numerous targeted and non-targeted organic pollutants from industrial activities are one of the major contributors to the global air pollution. However, comprehensive recognition of their molecular characterization and real industrial scale mechanisms have never been achieved. Herein, by using high resolution mass spectrometry, we firstly give an insight into the molecular characterization and mechanisms of organic pollutants formed on fly ashes from secondary smelting of Al, Cu, Pb, and Zn and electric arc furnace steel-making. We found that lipid-like, unsaturated hydrocarbon and carboxyl-rich alicyclic molecule-like structures were the major chemical classes. Methylation- and oxidation-related reactions were suggested to be the major formation mechanisms. The predominance of carboxyl-rich structures in the fly ash further proved the contribution of metallurgical industrial emissions to air pollution. Findings in this study could be significant for further understanding the contribution of industrial emissions to air pollutions and conducting their source emission control.

Biochemical characteristics and membrane fouling behaviors of soluble microbial products during the lifecycle of Escherichia coli

The complexity of production process and chemical compositions of soluble microbial products (SMPs) largely limits the understanding of membrane fouling in membrane bioreactors (MBRs). Herein, we used a model single-strain Escherichia coli to better understand the chemical natures of SMPs and their roles in membrane fouling. The effects of carbon source and growth phase on the chemical compositions of SMPs were identified at both the compound and molecular levels by using advanced techniques including excitation emission matrix and parallel factor analysis (EEM-PARAFAC), size exclusion chromatography coupled with organic carbon detection (LC-OCD), and untargeted ultra-performance liquid chromatography - Q-Exactive - mass spectrometry (UPLC-Q-Exactive-MS). Subsequently, the roles of SMPs in the propensity of membrane fouling during ultrafiltration (UF) were studied. The results showed that the chemical compositions and fouling potentials of SMPs were carbon source- and growth phase-dependent. In the exponential phase, SMPs mainly consisted of utilization-associated products (UAPs) and remaining substrates. As the microorganism progressed into the stationary and senescent phases, UAPs and biomass-associated products (BAPs) were the main components, respectively. The SMP contents generated in glucose medium were higher than those generated in acetate medium, and higher abundances of humic fluorescent components were observed in glucose-fed SMPs. Van Krevelen diagrams of the UPLC-MS results revealed that acetate-fed SMPs contained more carboxylic-rich alicyclic molecules, peptides-like, aromatic, and carbohydrates-like components than glucose-fed SMPs in the stationary and senescent phases. These components played a significant role in irreversible membrane fouling, as evidenced in UF experiments. Standard blocking and cake filtration were the main fouling mechanisms for the filtration of SMPs collected in the exponential and stationary/senescent phases, respectively. Our findings highlight linkages between SMP compositions and membrane fouling at both the compound and molecular levels and suggest that both the carbon source and growth phase strongly determine the production potential, chemical nature, and fouling behavior of SMPs.

Molecular characterization of size-segregated organic aerosols in the urban boundary layer in wintertime Beijing by FT-ICR MS

Organic aerosols, complicated mixtures of organic compounds, are important constituents of atmospheric particulate matter. However, little is known about the size distributions and vertical profiles of these constituents at a molecular level in the urban boundary layer. Here, we characterized the molecular compositions of size-segregated samples collected simultaneously at two heights (8 m and 260 m above ground level) in urban Beijing during the winter of 2018. The CHO, CHNO, CHOS, and CHNOS subgroups in water-soluble organic carbon were characterized using a 15-T ultrahigh-resolution Fourier transform-ion cyclotron resonance (FT-ICR) mass spectrometer. We found that both their numbers and magnitudes increased with a decrease in the particle size, especially for high molecular weight (HMW) compounds, except CHNOS. The number of CHNOS species also increased in the coarse mode, presumably because the alkalinity could inhibit their hydrolysis in the coarse mode. The compounds in small particles with higher O/C ratios and carbon oxidation state were possibly more aged, while the coarse particles with more lipid- and peptide-like compounds should originate from fresh emissions. Moreover, as the oxidation state increases in small particles, functionalization is enhanced for sulfur-containing compounds with fracturing of the benzene ring, while CHO and CHNO are potentially dominated by demethylation with ring-retaining products. It is worth noting that common compounds with the same molecular characteristics accounted for more than 86% of the total compounds between 260 m and ground level (8 m), demonstrating that the aerosols were well mixed in the urban boundary layer. Nonetheless, the relative content of the compounds was higher at ground level due to the impact of primary emissions, which increased with the particle size. In addition, the compounds in submicron particles were more oxidized at 260 m, while the opposite was observed in the coarse mode.

Organoarsenic conversion to As(III) in subcritical hydrothermal reaction of livestock manure

Liquid phase produced by the subcritical hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of livestock manure is extensively used in agronomic and environmental applications, but the potential risks caused by inherent pollutants (e.g., roxarsone, ROX) of the livestock manure have not been considered. This study shows that less toxic ROX is completely converted into highly toxic As(III) and As(V) in the HTL reaction with temperature more than 240 °C. Moreover, more than 81.5% of As is distributed in the liquid phase generated by the livestock manure HTL reaction. Notably, the hydrothermal products of livestock manure facilitate the conversion of As(V) to As(III). The resulting hydrochar and aldehydes act as electron donors for As(V) reduction, thus resulting in the formation of As(III). Furthermore, the dissociated As promotes the depolymerization and deoxygenation of the macromolecular compounds to produce more small oxygen-containing compounds such as aldehydes, further boosting the As(V) reduction to As(III). These results indicate that the liquid phase of the livestock manure has potential risks in applications as a fertilizer. Such findings have substantial implications in biomass utilization and redox reactions of envirotechnical and biogeochemical relevance.

Activation of Humic Acid in Lignite Using Molybdate-Phosphorus Hierarchical Hollow Nanosphere Catalyst Oxidation: Molecular Characterization and Rice Seed Germination-Promoting Performances

Although solid-phase activation of lignite using a nanocatalyst has great potential in producing low-cost and sustainable humic acid, the large-scale application of this technology still faces challenges because of the high price and toxicity of the nanocatalyst. Additionally, the specific molecular components of humic acid in activated lignite remain unknown. In this work, a multifunctional molybdate-phosphorus hierarchical hollow nanosphere (Mo-P-HH) catalyst was successfully manufactured by a simple way followed by phosphorization. In comparison with a commercial Pd/C catalyst, the multifunctional Mo-P-HH catalyst was more effective in producing water-soluble humic acid with small molecular functional groups from lignite via solid-phase activation. Moreover, Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry revealed the molecular compositions of humic acid in activated lignite. Compared with that from raw lignite, the humic acid after Mo-P-HH activation had less aromatic structure but higher content of lipids, proteins, amino sugar, and carbohydrates. In addition, the activated humic acid simulated seed germination and seedling growth. Therefore, this study provided a high-performance hierarchical hollow nanocatalyst for activation of humic acid and also offered the theoretical basis for the application of humic acid in agriculture.

Degradation of nanoplastics in the environment: Reactivity and impact on atmospheric and surface waters

Microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) are ubiquitous and contaminate soil, surface waters, atmospheric aerosol, precipitations, indoor and outdoor environments. However, the occurrence, transformation and fate of NPs in the environment are still unclear. In this work, polystyrene nanoparticles (PS-NPs) are used as a proxy of NPs to study their reactivity and potential impact on atmospheric and surface waters. In particular, the reactivity with hydroxyl radicals (OH) in the aqueous phase is investigated. For the first time, a reactivity constant for the reaction of NPs with OH is measured, strongly dependent on the exposed particle surface area of NPs. Degradation products (short chain carboxylic acids and aromatic compounds), obtained by direct and OH-mediated photolysis of PS-NPs suspensions, are identified by mass spectrometry. Irradiation of a PS-NPs suspension under natural sunlight for 1 year has shown the formation of formic acid and organic compounds similar to those found in riverine and cloud dissolved organic matter, which could contribute significantly to the dissolved organic matter in the aqueous phase.

Dissolved organic matter released from rice straw and straw biochar: Contrasting molecular composition and lead binding behaviors

It remains debatable whether carbonized straw reapplying is a better solution than direct straw reapplying. Comparison of the characteristics and complexation behaviors of dissolved organic matter (DOM) derived from straw (ST) and biochar (BC) may offer new insights, but little current information exists. Herein, DOM samples were characterized by Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FTICR-MS), revealing that the molecular weight and condensed aromatic components of BCDOM (457.70 Da and 71.16%, respectively) were higher than those of STDOM (433.48 Da and 3.13%, respectively). In particular, the N-containing compounds of BCDOM was more aromatic than STDOM. By combining spectroscopic techniques, complexation modeling, and chemometric analysis, BCDOM was shown to exhibit higher binding parameters (log K_M) and more binding sites for Pb than STDOM. Noteworthily, the two binding sites, aromatic NO and aromatic NO₂, existed only in the interaction of BCDOM with Pb. Furthermore, while phenol-OH displayed the fastest response to Pb in both STDOM and BCDOM, the binding sequences were not exactly the same. These differences may be related to the variations in the aromaticity and N-containing structures of DOM detected by FTICR-MS. These findings have implications on the stewardship of straw- and biochar-amended soil.

Assessment of PM2.5-bound nitrogen-containing organic compounds (NOCs) during winter at urban sites in China and Korea

In this study, ambient fine particles (PM_2.5) were collected in two urban cities in China and Korea (Beijing and Gwangju, respectively) simultaneously in January 2018. Analysis of the nonpolar and semipolar organic matter (OM) using atmospheric pressure photoionization (APPI) Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) revealed that compounds containing only C, H, and O (CHO) and those containing C, H, O, and N (CHON) accounted for more than 90% of the total intensity of the OM peaks. Higher proportions of CHON compounds were observed during days with abnormally high PM_2.5 concentrations at both sites than on regular or non-event days. The proportion of CHON species at the Beijing site was not correlated with secondary ionic species (i.e., NO₃^-, SO₄^2-, and NH₄⁺) or gaseous components (i.e., O₃, NO₂, and SO₂). In contrast, the proportion of CHON species at the Gwangju site was positively correlated with the concentrations of particulate nitrate and ammonium ions, assuming that ambient ammonium nitrate plays a role in the atmospheric formation of nitrogen-containing organic compounds (NOCs) at the Gwangju site and that Gwangju is more strongly influenced by secondary aerosols than Beijing is. In particular, a significant proportion of the compounds observed at the Beijing site contained only C, H and N (CHN), while negligible amounts of CHN were detected at the Gwangju site. The CHN species in Beijing were identified as quinoline compounds and the corresponding -CH₂ homologous series using complementary GC × GC-TOF MS analysis. These results suggest that NOCs and their -CH₂ homologous series from primary emissions may be significant contributors to nonpolar and semipolar OM during winter in Beijing, while NOCs with high oxidation states, likely formed via ambient-phase nitrate-mediated reactions, may be the dominant OM constituents in Gwangju.

Classification of Clouds Sampled at the Puy de Dôme Station (France) Based on Chemical Measurements and Air Mass History Matrices

A statistical analysis of 295 cloud samples collected at the Puy de Dôme station in France (PUY), covering the period 2001–2018, was conducted using principal component analysis (PCA), agglomerative hierarchical clustering (AHC), and partial least squares (PLS) regression. Our model classified the cloud water samples on the basis of their chemical concentrations and of the dynamical history of their air masses estimated with back-trajectory calculations. The statistical analysis split our dataset into two sets, i.e., the first set characterized by westerly air masses and marine characteristics, with high concentrations of sea salts and the second set having air masses originating from the northeastern sector and the “continental” zone, with high concentrations of potentially anthropogenic ions. It appears from our dataset that the influence of cloud microphysics remains minor at PUY as compared with the impact of the air mass history, i.e., physicochemical processes, such as multiphase reactivity.
