Abstract
The aim of this research was to graft gallic acid (GA) onto high methoxyl pectin (HMP) through the redox-pair of ascorbic acid (Aa) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) with one- and two-pot procedures. The effectiveness of the both procedures and the chemical, physical and antioxidant properties of the obtained HMP-GA were evaluated. HMP-GAone-pot (23.3 ± 0.21 mg GA Equivalent (GAE)/g) and HMP-GAtwo-pot (32.3 ± 0.52 mg GAE/g) were best obtained at H2O2/Aa molar ratio-HMP/GA weight ratio of 9.0-0.5 and 16.0-0.5, respectively. The UV-Vis and FT-IR spectra and along with their derivative and thermal gravimetric analyses, revealed differences between HMP-GAone-pot and HMP-GAtwo-pot. The latter exhibited a greater antioxidant capacity than the former in single electron transfer (ET), hydrogen atom transfer (HAT), and ET-HAT mixed assays. The chemical differences can be attributed to side reactions that may have interfered with the grafting reaction. Consequently, HMP-GA, possessing unique antioxidant and prebiotic properties, can be synthesized through redox-pair procedures.

Abstract
This work reports the development of low-cost and rapid multiplexed colorimetric assay of antioxidants (total phenolics, antioxidant capacity, flavonoids and anthocyanins) in wines at daisy-shaped fluidic paper-based analytical devices (PADs). The desired fluidic patterns were formed on paper by pen drawing and colorimetric reagents were immobilized at the 6 peripheral test zones. The sample was added at the central sample zone, migrated to the test zones and reacted with the immobilized reagents producing characteristic colors that were captured and analyzed. The paper-based approach was applied to the analysis of several wine samples and the results were statistically correlated to standard solution-based colorimetric assays, indicating that it could be reliably used for ranking wines according to their antioxidants content. In addition, the paper-based analytical methodology is simple, instrument-free, portable, cost-effective, rapid and environment friendly.

Abstract
We introduce a novel method, namely IrRAC, for assessing total antioxidant capacity utilizing the single electron oxidant hexachloroiridate(IV). This method leverages the 488 nm absorption band of [IrCl6]2- largely reducing interferences from antioxidants and their oxidation products. [IrCl6]2- is stable 6 h in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) ensuring consistent and reproducible absorbance readings and rendering spectrophotometric determinations under physiological neutrality. Individual assessments of 23 antioxidants reveal a linear correlation between decreasing absorbance and increasing antioxidant concentration. When the IrRAC assay was compared with several established water-based methods, strong correlations were found. Importantly, [IrCl6]2- shows a minimal oxidation of non-antioxidative substances. Moreover, IrRAC performs well with synthetic antioxidant mixtures and real samples, highlighting that the nature of antioxidants dominates the assay without much disturbance. Commercial availability of K2[IrCl6] eliminates the need of pretreatment of the oxidant. Undoubtedly, the new method confers a compelling and cost-effective alternative to the existing electron transfer-based methodologies.

Abstract
Terminalia chebula exhibits a high level of antioxidant capacity and is highly valued in medicine and cosmetics. However, its main efficacy and active ingredients related to antioxidant, whitening, and anti-aging are still unclear. In this study, the active site responsible for its cosmetic efficacy was specified by the biological activity-guided method and further characterized by using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UHPLC-QTOF-MS/MS). T. chebula was ultrasonically extracted by five solvents, and 30% ethanol extract was screened out for subsequent purification by 1,1-D-iphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH), 2,2'-Azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonate) (ABTS), hydroxyl, and superoxide anion free radical scavenging assays. Five elution fractions were obtained by column chromatography on D101 macroporous adsorbent resin eluted by an increased proportion of ethanol. The 30% ethanol elution fraction was specified as the enrichment site of active ingredients showing good antioxidant capacity and potent inhibitory activity against tyrosinase and elastase. A total of 30 compounds were identified by UHPLC-QTOF-MS/MS in the 30% ethanol elution fraction, including 11 gallotannins, 14 ellagitannins, and 5 other compounds, and these compounds may be the key ingredients in cosmetics beneficial for the skin. Such a biological activity-guided method has provided a simple and rapid venue for specifying the components of medicinal herbs responsible for cosmetic efficacy.

Abstract
With the widespread application of anaerobic digestion technology, biogas slurry become the main source of organic amendments in practice. Comprehensive studies into the inhibitory effects of low molecular weight (LMW) organic acids, essential components in biogas slurry, on the sulfide minerals biooxidation and its bioleaching (AMD) have been lacking. In this study, acetic acid (AA) served as a representative of LMW organic acids in biogas slurry to investigate its impact on the inhibition of chalcopyrite biooxidation by Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans (A. ferrooxidans). It was shown that AA could slow down the chalcopyrite biooxidation and inhibit the jarosite formation on the mineral surface. Compared with the control group (0 ppm AA), the sulfate increment in the leachate of the 50 ppm, 100 ppm, and 200 ppm AA-treated groups decreased by 36.4%, 66.8%, and 69.0%, respectively. AA treatment (≥50 ppm) could reduce the oxidation of ferrous ions in the leachate by one order of magnitude. At the same time, the bacterial concentration of the leachate in the 50 ppm, 100 ppm, and 200 ppm AA-treated groups decreased by 70%, 93%, and 94%, respectively. These findings provide a scientific basis for new strategies to utilize biogas slurry for mine remediation and contribute to an enhanced comprehension of organic amendments to prevent AMD in situ in mining soil remediation.

Abstract
A contribution to the use of deep eutectic solvents (DES) and microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) was made for bioactive compounds recovery, especially those with lipophilic character, from tomato and carrot samples rich in carotenoids. For the first time, a novel deep eutectic solvent was synthesized, comprising tributyl phosphate (TBP) as a hydrogen bond acceptor and acetic acid (AcOH) as a hydrogen bond donor. The total antioxidant capacity (TAC) of tomato and carrot extracts obtained by MAE, in which optimization of operational parameters and modeling were made with the use of Box-Behnken design of the response surface methodology (RSM), was evaluated using the Cupric Reducing Antioxidant Capacity (CUPRAC) method. For the highest TAC, operational parameters that best suit the MAE procedure were set at 80 °C, 35 min, and 25 mL/2.0 g. The TAC values of extracts obtained by MAE using TBP:AcOH, 1:2 (mol/mol) were examined against those of extracts acquired by classical solvent extraction using a mixture of hexane, ethanol and acetone (H:E:A, 2:1:1 (v/v/v)) mixture. TAC of extracts in DES varied between 5.10 and 0.71 lycopene equivalents (mmol LYC kg-1). The highest extraction yield comparable to conventional organic solvents was obtained with TBP:AcOH (1:2). It was observed that, in addition to lipophilic antioxidants, some hydrophilic antioxidant compounds were partially extracted with the proposed DES. Moreover, the extracted antioxidant compounds were identified and quantified by HPLC analysis. The proposed DES and MAE process will find potential application for hydrophobic antioxidant extraction from tomatoes and carrots on an industrial scale after further studies.

Abstract
Citrus sinensis balady orange, C. sinensis navel orange, C. paradisi, C. limon, C. sinensis bloody orange, C. sinensis sweet orange, C. aurantium var. amara and C. reticulata were successfully discriminated using chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques coupled with chemometrics. Ultraviolet spectroscopy (UV), and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) managed to discriminate the alcohol extract samples to six and five clusters respectively on exposing the obtained data to Principle component analysis (PCA). High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was utilized for differentiating the different samples based upon their rutin content where C. aurantium demonstrated the highest rutin content (0.795 mg/mL). LC-ESI-MS led to the identification of 35 compounds belonging mainly to flavonoids and limonoids. In vitro biological investigations including DDPH, ABTS, FRAP and enzyme inhibitory activities revealed the promising antioxidant, neuroprotective, anti-hyperglycaemic and skin-lightning potentials of citrus samples that were correlated with the total phenol and flavonoid contents. In silico ADME/TOPKAT reflected the acceptable pharmacokinetic, pharmacodynamic and toxicity properties of the identified secondary metabolites.

Abstract
One-third of people with schizophrenia have elevated levels of anti-gliadin antibodies (AGA IgG). A 5-week randomized double-blind pilot study was performed in 2014-2017 in an inpatient setting to test the effect of a gluten-free diet (GFD) on participants with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder who also had elevated AGA IgG (≥ 20 U) but were negative for celiac disease. This earlier pilot study reported that the GFD-group showed improved gastrointestinal and psychiatric symptoms, and also improvements in TNF-α and the inflammatory cytokine IL-23. Here, we performed measurements of these banked plasma samples to detect levels of oxidative stress (OxSt) using a recently developed iridium (Ir)-reducing capacity assay. Triplicate measurements of these samples showed an Intraclass Correlation Coefficient of 0.84 which indicates good reproducibility. Further, a comparison of the OxSt measurements at the baseline and 5-week end-point for this small sample size shows that the GFD-group (N = 7) had lowered OxSt levels compared to the gluten-containing diet group (GCD; N = 9; p = 0.05). Finally, we showed that improvements in OxSt over these 5 weeks were correlated to improvements in gastrointestinal (r = +0.64, p = 0.0073) and psychiatric (r = +0.52, p = 0.039) symptoms. Also, we showed a possible association between the decrease in OxSt and the lowered levels of IL-23 (r = +0.44, p = 0.087), although without statistical significance. Thus, the Ir-reducing capacity assay provides a simple, objective measure of OxSt with the results providing further evidence that inflammation, redox dysregulation and OxSt may mediate interactions between the gut and brain.

Abstract
A set of simple smartphone-based methods of bioactive compounds determination were developed for wine analysis. Procedures for smartphone-based determination of the total content of phenolic compounds, flavonoids, anthocyanins and biogenic amines, as well as measurement of antioxidant activity were developed and fully validated. The experimental setup is based on smartphone and 3D-printed device, though it is very simple and can be conveniently applied in lab and in field. The proposed solutions have satisfactory figures of merit with R2 in the range of 0.9860-0.9981 for linear range. The recoveries were in range 98.6-102%, RSDs up to 4.2% and LODs below 2.3 mg/L. In order to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed procedures, wine samples were analysed using spectrophotometry and newly developed methods. The results of application of smartphone and spectrophotometer are comparable, in terms of validation parameters and measured concentrations in real samples.

Abstract
Mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs) are the natural UV-absorbing compounds with antioxidant activity found in microalgae and macroalgae. We collected red algae Asparagopsis taxiformis, Meristotheca japonica, and Polysiphonia senticulosa from Nagasaki, where UV radiation is more intense than in Hokkaido, and investigated the effect of UV radiation on MAA content. It was suggested that A. taxiformis and M. japonica contained shinorine and palythine, while UV-absorbing compound in P. senticulosa could not be identified. The amounts of these MAAs were lower compared to those from Hokkaido. Despite an increase in UV radiation in both regions from February to April, MAA contents of red algae from Nagasaki slightly decreased while those from Hokkaido significantly decreased. This difference was suggested the amount of inorganic nitrogen in the ocean. Antioxidant activity of MAAs increased under alkaline conditions. The extract containing MAAs from P. senticulosa showed the highest antioxidant activity among 4 red algae.

Abstract
Spermacoce alata Aubl. is widely available in the market as traditional Chinese medicine and animal feed, due to its properties of clearing heat and treating malaria and its high-protein and crude fiber content. In this study, the essential oil of S. alata was obtained through hydrodistillation. GC-MS and GC-FID methods were used to identify the chemical components and their relative abundance. Furthermore, the antioxidant capacity was measured using DPPH, ABTS, and FRAP assays, and the inhibitory effects of acetylcholinesterase, α-glucosidase, and β-lactamase were also evaluated. A total of 67 compounds were identified, with the major constituents being palmitic acid (30.74%), linoleic acid (16.13%), and phenylheptatriyne (8.07%). The essential oil exhibited moderate antioxidant activity against DPPH (IC50 > 10 mg/mL), while the IC50 value for the ABTS assay was 3.84 ± 2.12 mg/mL and the FRAP assay value was 87.22 ± 12.22 µM/g. Additionally, the essential oil showed moderate anti-acetylcholinesterase activity (IC50 = 286.0 ± 79.04 μg/mL), significant anti-α-glucosidase activity (IC50 = 174.7 ± 13.12 μg/mL), and potent anti-β-lactamase activity (IC50 = 37.56 ± 3.48 μg/mL). The results suggest that S. alata has the potential for application in pharmacology, warranting further exploration and investigation.

Abstract
The Equisetaceae family, commonly known as horsetails, has been of scientific interest for decades due to its status as one of the most ancient extant vascular plant families. Notably, the corresponding species have found their place in traditional medicine, offering a wide array of applications. This study presents a comprehensive phytochemical analysis of polar secondary metabolites within the sterile stems of five distinct Equisetum species using HPLC-DAD-ESI-MSn. For this purpose, fresh plant material was extracted with acetone/water, and the resulting crude extracts were fractionated using dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, and n-butanol, respectively. The results reveal a complex array of compounds, including hydroxycinnamic acids, hydroxybenzoic acids, flavonoids, and other phenolic compounds. In addition, total phenolic contents (Folin-Ciocalteu assay) and antioxidant activities (DPPH assay) of the plant extracts were evaluated using spectrophotometric methods. The present comparative analysis across the five species highlights both shared and species-specific metabolites, providing valuable insights into their chemical diversity and potential pharmacological properties.

Abstract
One of the most used methods to measure antioxidant capacity in food is the ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) test, which is simple, sensitive, and economical, nevertheless has long analysis times, causing measurement errors due to the instability of the FRAP reagent due to its precipitation sequential injection analysis (SIA) is a flow technique that can correct these disadvantages because it is more quickly. So, a novel FRAP-SIA method was developed to evaluate the antioxidant capacity. The system was optimized using a central composite design for hydrodynamic and chemical factors, resulting in a flow rate of 35 μL s-1, and aspirate volumes of 33 μL-38 μL-33 μL for the sequence (FRAP-Antioxidant-FRAP). FRAP reagent was prepared with an HCl solution at 0.005 mol L-1, improving its stability 24 times, concerning when it is in acetate buffer at pH 3.6. The method showed excellent accuracy (RSD <3%) with a LOD of 1.0 μmol L-1 of Trolox for a linear range of 5-120 μmol L-1. The reaction time was diminished by 96% concerning the FRAP-microplate assay (from 30 min to 1.2 min). The method was applied in beverages and extracts, obtaining recovery values ranging from 91.24 to 114.22%.

Abstract
Network pharmacology is an ideal tool to explore the effects of therapeutic components derived from plants on human metabolic diseases that are linked to inflammation. This study investigated the antioxidant effects of ginger leaves (GLs) and predicted targets for antioxidant activity. Quantitative and free radical scavenging analyses were performed to detect the main bioactive compounds of GLs and evaluate their antioxidant activities. Chemical diversity and network pharmacology approaches were used to predict key antioxidant components of GLs and their molecular targets. Nine major bioactive compounds of GLs were quantified using an internal standard method, and the antioxidant activity was evaluated using the DPPH and ABTS free radical scavenging methods. We first built the compound-gene-pathways and protein-protein interaction networks of GLs-related antioxidant targets and then conducted gene ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Gene and Genome (KEGG) pathway enrichment analyses. Molecular docking results show that astragalin, a compound isolated from GLs, had the highest level of connectivity in the compound-target network and was involved in inflammation-related biosynthesis by directly impacting cytokine gene expression and PTGS2 inhibition markers. These findings not only suggest that the compounds isolated from GLs can be developed as potential antioxidants, but also demonstrate the applicability of network pharmacology to assess the potential of foods for disease treatment.

Abstract
Antioxidant peptides are a class of biologically active peptides with low molecular weights and stable antioxidant properties that are isolated from proteins. In this review, the progress in research on the activity evaluation, action mechanism, and structure-activity relationships of natural antioxidant peptides are summarized. The methods used to evaluate antioxidant activity are mainly classified into three categories: in vitro chemical, in vitro cellular, and in vivo animal methods. Also, the biological effects produced by these three methods are listed: the scavenging of free radicals, chelation of metal ions, inhibition of lipid peroxidation, inhibition of oxidative enzyme activities, and activation of antioxidant enzymes and non-enzymatic systems. The antioxidant effects of natural peptides primarily consist of the regulation of redox signaling pathways, which includes activation of the Nrf2 pathway and the inhibition of the NF-κB pathway. The structure-activity relationships of the antioxidant peptides are investigated, including the effects of peptide molecular weight, amino acid composition and sequence, and secondary structure on antioxidant activity. In addition, four computer-assisted methods (molecular docking, molecular dynamics simulation, quantum chemical calculations, and the determination of quantitative structure-activity relationships) for analyzing the structure-activity effects of natural peptides are summarized. Thus, this review lays a theoretical foundation for the development of new antioxidants, nutraceuticals, and cosmetics.

Abstract
The antioxidant power of quercetin-3-O-glucuronide (miquelianin) has been studied, at the density functional level of theory, in both lipid-like and aqueous environments. In the aqueous phase, the computed pKa equilibria allowed the identification of the neutral and charged species present in solution that can react with the ⋅OOH radical. The Hydrogen Atom Transfer (HAT), Single Electron Transfer (SET) and Radical Adduct Formation (RAF) mechanisms were considered, and the individual, total and fraction corrected rate constants were obtained. Potential non-covalent inhibition of Mpro from SARS-CoV-2 by miquelianin has been also evaluated.

Abstract
In this study, a simple and sensitive colorimetric assay has been developed for total antioxidant capacity measurement. The assay is based on the absorption measurement of the bluish-green oxidized product (ABTS·+) formed as a result of the oxidation reaction of the chromogenic reagent ABTS (2,2'-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) with gold(III). However, in the presence of antioxidants, the ABTS oxidation process is effectively suppressed due to the reduction of gold(III) ions to the zerovalent state forming gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). Relatively lighter colors and a significant decrease in absorbance are observed depending on the total antioxidant capacity. Taking advantage of this situation, qualitative and quantitative total antioxidant capacity (TAC) measurements, with the naked eye and UV-vis spectroscopy, respectively, could be successfully performed. The assay is named "auric reducing antioxidant capacity" (AuRAC) because the gold(III) ion-reducing ability of antioxidants is measured. The AuRAC assay was applied to dietary polyphenols, vitamin C, thiol-type antioxidants, and their synthetic mixtures. Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC) values obtained with the AuRAC assay were found to be compatible with those of the reference CUPRAC (cupric reducing antioxidant capacity) assay. The AuRAC assay was validated through linearity, additivity, precision, and recovery, demonstrating that the assay is reliable and robust. Compared to the simple TAC assays in the literature based on AuNP formation with subsequent surface plasmon resonance (SPR) absorbance measurement, this indirect assay has a smoother linear range starting from lower antioxidant concentrations. This method displays much higher molar absorption coefficients for antioxidant compounds than other conventional single electron transfer (SET) assays because 3-e- reduction of trivalent gold (i.e., Au(III) → Au(0)) produces three chromophore cation radicals (ABTS·+) of the assay reagent. The sensor has been successfully applied to complex matrices, such as tea infusions and pharmaceutical samples. The AuRAC assay stands out with its high molar absorptivity connected to enhanced sensitivity as well as its potential to convert into a paper-based colorimetric sensor.

Abstract
Melanin is a multifunctional biological pigment that recently emerged as endowed with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties and with high potentialities in skin protection and regenerative medicine. Here, a biomimetic magnesium-doped nano-hydroxyapatite (MgHA) was synthesized and decorated with melanin molecules starting from two different monomeric precursors, i.e. 5,6-dihydroxyindole-2-carboxylic acid (DHICA) and dopamine (DA), demonstrating to be able to polymerize on the surface of MgHA nanostructures, thus leading to a melanin coating. This functionalization was realized by a simple and green preparation method requiring mild conditions in an aqueous medium and room temperature. Complementary spectroscopy and electron imaging analyses were carried out to define the effective formation of a stable coating, the percentage of the organic compounds, and the structural properties of resulting melanin-coated nanostructures, which showed good antioxidant activity. The in vitro interaction with a cell model, i.e. mouse fibroblasts, was investigated. The excellent biocompatibility of all bioinspired nanostructures was confirmed from a suitable cell proliferation. Finally, the enhanced biological performances of the nanostructures coated with melanin from DHICA were confirmed by scratch assays. Jointly our findings indicated that low crystalline MgHA and melanin pigments can be efficiently combined, and the resulting nanostructures are promising candidates as multifunctional platforms for a more efficient approach for skin regeneration and protection.

Abstract
Buritirana (Mauritella armata) is a fruit from a native Brazilian palm tree whose economic and industrial potential is still little explored. The nutritional composition and carbohydrates; organic acids; fatty acids; triacylglycerol; and phenolics profile of buritirana pulp, shells, and seeds were performed in this study. In addition, pH, color, ant total carotenoid, phenolic, flavonoids, flavonols, tannins, and antioxidant potential (ABTS, DPPH, ILP, FRAP, CUPRAC, and TRC) were determined in these parts of the fruit. The results indicated high lipid content and energy value for pulp (30.53 g 100 g-1, and 351.21 kcal 100 g-1, respectively) and shells (18.41 g 100 g-1, and 276.73 kcal 100 g-1, respectively). On the other hand, high fiber (63.09 g 100 g-1), starch (2.66 g 100 g-1), and carbohydrates (28.60 g 100 g-1) contents were observed for the seeds. Glucose was the main carbohydrate found in pulp and seed, while sucrose was the main sugar in shells. Tartaric acid was the predominant organic acid in pulp and shells (16.60 and 10.96 mg 100 g-1, respectively), while malic acid was the main organic acid in seeds (58.78 mg 100 g-1). Oleic and palmitic acid were the main fatty acids detected in buritirana pulp, shells, and seeds. Buritirana pulp and shells showed a high content of total phenolic and total flavonoid (918.58 and 940.63 mg GAE 100 g-1; and 679.31 and 444.94 mg CE 100 g-1, respectively). Moreover, a high antioxidant potential (DPPH•, CUPRAC, and ILP) was observed in the extracts obtained from pulp and shells. The pulp showed a significant content of carotenoids (270.23 μg g-1). Among the 28 phenolic compounds determined in buritirana pulp and seeds, and 27 in shells, 22 (pulp and seeds), and 21 (shells) were reported by first time in the literature. Ferulic acid in pulp and shells (99.39 and 111.69 μg g-1) and pinocembrin in seeds (19.21 μg g-1) were the main phenolic compounds identified in buritirana. Multivariate analysis showed high correlation of phenolic compounds on antioxidant potential. The results showed that buritirana is rich in nutrients and bioactive products and can be fully utilized. The products resulting from buritirana processing can be applied in the food, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical industries.

Abstract
Antioxidants play a crucial role in maintaining human health by counteracting oxidative stress and regulating redox balance within the body. The mixture of various antioxidant compounds in different forms (i.e., free, bound, insoluble) in food creates a redox active environment both in the human body and in the food system. Acting as both electron donors and acceptors while interacting with each other can either result in antagonism through pro-oxidative effects, or synergism through regeneration of one antioxidant by another. During the antioxidant capacity measurement, besides the individual antioxidant effects of the antioxidant components, these effects that occur because of their interaction with each other should be also considered. Classical antioxidant capacity measurement methods mostly concentrate on the fractions of foods that can be extracted with either water, alcohol, lipid, or acid/alkaline solutions. Antioxidants that cannot be extracted with any solvent are mostly ignored in these methods. On the other hand, the QUENCHER method, which allows direct measurement of antioxidant capacity foods without extraction, offers a rational solution to the limitations of traditional extraction-based methods. This approach considers the antioxidant capacity and interactions of all antioxidant forms that can be found in a food matrix, at the same time. This review provides detailed insights into the advantages of QUENCHER as a holistic approach for the accurate measurement of the antioxidant capacity of foods.

Abstract
Lamiaceae herbs such as rosemary have excellent antioxidant properties, and lipidic diterpenoid constituents, such as carnosol, are known as characteristic components to exhibit strong antioxidant activity. This study investigates the effect of thiol compounds on the antioxidant properties of diterpenoid polyphenols. The results concerning the antioxidant activity of polyphenols in the presence of thiol showed that two polyphenols, namely, carnosol and isorosmanol, enhanced antioxidant capacity against the radical-induced oxidation of lipids. Further examination of the mechanism revealed that both polyphenols exhibit excellent catalytic antioxidant activity by using the thiol group as a reduction source. Using density functional theory calculations, we attempted to explain why only these two polyphenols exhibit catalytic antioxidant properties. The calculation results and the assumed reaction mechanism suggested that the orthoquinones produced in the antioxidant reactions of carnosol and isorosmanol are more unstable than the others and that the regioselectivity of their reactions with thiols contributes to their catalytic antioxidant properties.

Abstract
Recent advances in understanding the role of iron and ROS in cell death suggest new therapeutic avenues to treat organ damage including acute kidney injury (AKI). Inhibiting ferroptosis was expected to have great potential for the treatment of this disease. Ferroptosis is characterized by iron-dependent lipid peroxidation and currently, a majority of reported ferroptosis inhibitors belong to either radical-trapping antioxidants or iron chelators. However, clinically used iron chelators such as deferoxamine and deferiprone have limited efficacy against ferroptosis (generally with EC50 > 100 μM), despite their proven safety. Herein, we present the rational design of novel ferroptosis inhibitors by incorporating the naturally occurring cinnamic acid scaffold and the 3-hydroxypyridin-4(1H)-one iron-chelating pharmacophore. Through ABTS˙+ radical-scavenging assay, oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) measurement, Fe3+ affinity evaluation, and anti-erastin-induced HT22 cell ferroptosis assays, we identified compound 9c as the most prospective ferroptosis inhibitor (ABTS˙+, IC50 = 4.35 ± 0.05 μM; ORCA = 23.79 ± 0.56 TE; pFe3+ = 18.59; EC50 = 14.89 ± 0.08 μM, respectively). Notably, 9c dose-dependently alleviated cell death in cisplatin-induced AKI model. Our results provide insight into the development of new ferroptosis inhibitors through rational incorporation of pharmacophores from existing ferroptosis inhibitors, and compound 9c could be a promising lead compound worth further investigation.

Abstract
Redox imbalance leads to oxidative stress that causes irreversible cellular damage. The incorporation of the antioxidant element selenium (Se) in the structure of pyridinium salts has been used as a strategy in chemical synthesis and can be useful in drug development. We investigated the antioxidant activity of Se-containing pyridinium salts (named Compounds 3A, 3B, and 3C) through in vitro tests. We focused our study on liver protein carbonylation, liver lipoperoxidation, free radical scavenging activity (1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazil [DPPH]; 2,2'-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid [ABTS]), and enzyme-mimetic activity assays (glutathione S-transferase [GST]-like; superoxide dismutase [SOD]-like). In addition, 2-(4-chlorophenyl)-2-oxoethyl)-2-((phenylselanyl)methyl)pyridin-1-ium bromide (3C) was selected to evaluate the acute oral toxicity in mice due to the best antioxidant profile. The three compounds were effective in reducing the levels of protein carbonylation and lipoperoxidation in the liver in a µM concentration range. All compounds demonstrated scavenger activity of DPPH and ABTS radicals, and GST-like action. No significant effects were detected in the SOD-like assay. Experimental data also showed that the acute oral treatment of mice with Compound 3C (50 and 300 mg/kg) did not cause mortality or change markers of liver and kidney functions. In summary, our findings reveal the antioxidant potential of Se-containing pyridinium salts in liver tissue, which could be related to their radical scavenging ability and mimetic action on the GST enzyme. They also demonstrate a low toxicity potential for Compound 3C. Together, the promising results open space for future studies on the therapeutic application of these molecules.

Abstract
Neurodegenerative disorders pose a substantial risk to human health, and oxidative stress, cholinergic dysfunction, and inflammation are the major contributors. The purpose of this study was to explore the neuroprotective effects of oat protein hydrolysate (OPH) and identify peptides with neuroprotective potential. This study is the first to isolate and identify OPH peptides with neuroprotective potential, including DFVADHPFLF (DF-10), HGQNFPIL (HL-8), and RDFPITWPW (RW-9), by screening via peptidomes and molecular-docking simulations. These peptides showed positive effects on the activity of antioxidant enzymes and thus reduced oxidative stress through regulation of Nrf2-keap1/HO-1 gene expression in vitro and in vivo. The peptides also significantly ameliorated scopolamine-induced cognitive impairment in the zebrafish model. This improvement was correlated with mitigation of MDA levels, AChE activity, and levels of inflammatory cytokines in the brains of zebrafish. Furthermore, these peptides significantly upregulated the mRNA expression of Bdnf, Nrf2, and Erg1 in the brains of zebrafish with neurodegenerative disorders. Collectively, oat peptides have potential for use as active components in nutraceutical applications for the prevention of neurodegenerative diseases.

Abstract
Yogurt acid whey (YAW) is a by-product of Greek strained yogurt production. The disposal of YAW constitutes an environmental problem, and given the increasing demand of Greek yogurt worldwide, its handling is a challenge. However, whey-derived peptides, resulting from microbial fermentation as well as those resulting from further hydrolysis during the digestion process, have been linked to enhanced biological activities. In this study, the antioxidant capacity of 33 samples of YAW obtained from Greek dairy companies of bovine, ovine or caprine origin was investigated using both cell-free and cell-based assays. The YAW samples, their in vitro digestion products (YAW-Ds) and a fraction of the digests (less than 3 kDa; YAW-D-P3) were assessed using four biochemical assays, namely ORAC, ABTS, FRAP and P-FRAP. Our data revealed a higher antioxidant capacity for digested samples compared with undigested samples, with all four methods. ORAC values after in vitro digestion were higher for the ovine samples compared to their bovine (YAW-D and YAW-D-P3) and caprine (YAW-D-P3) counterparts. Furthermore, the YAW-D-P3 fraction derived from samples collected in the summer months exhibited higher ORAC values when compared to the respective fraction from the winter months' samples. The cellular antioxidant activity of ovine YAW-D-P3 was improved in H2O2-treated HT29 cells compared to the control H2O2-treated cells. However, YAW-D-P3 could not trigger either the pathways involving the transcription factors NF-κB or NFE2L2 or the gene expression of SOD1, CAT and HMOX1 in LPS-challenged THP-1-derived macrophages. These results suggest that YAW, and particularly YAW from ovine origin, could be used as a natural source for its antioxidant potential in human and animal nutrition.

Abstract
Nutrition has crucial effects and a significant role in disease prevention. Recently, nutraceuticals have attracted much attention in scientific research due to their pleiotropic effects and relatively non-toxic behavior. Among the biological effects displayed by plants belonging to the Lamiaceae family, such as antibacterial, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, and anticholinesterase, sage is well known for its antioxidant properties and is a rich source of numerous compounds that are biologically active, amongst them polyphenols, with more than 160 types identified. In this review we summarized some of the significant studies published in the last decade reporting the most employed extraction methods and the different assays that are useful for establishing the antioxidant properties of some sage species. Even though the scientific literature contains plenty of data regarding the antioxidant properties of many sage species, further studies are needed in order to gain a deeper understanding of the mechanism of action and the compounds responsible for their antioxidant activity. Finally, it should be taken into account that the data on the antioxidant properties of sage extracts are often difficult to compare with each other, since a series of variables in the extraction procedures, the type of assay used, and standardization may affect the final result.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate, for the first time, the chemical composition and antioxidant activity of fluid extracts obtained from three Romanian cultivars of haskap berries (Lonicera caerulea L.) var. Loni, bitter cherries (Prunus avium var. sylvestris Ser.) var. Silva, and pomace from red grapes (Vitis vinifera L.) var. Mamaia, and their capacity to modulate in vitro steatosis, in view of developing novel anti-obesity products. Total phenolic, flavonoid, anthocyanin, and ascorbic acid content of fluid extracts was spectrophotometrically assessed and their free radical scavenging capacity was evaluated using Trolox Equivalent Antioxidant Capacity (TEAC) and free 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical inhibition assays. The Pearson coefficients showed a moderate correlation between the antioxidant activity of fluid extracts and their phenolic content, but a strong correlation between anthocyanin and ascorbic acid content. HPLC analysis identified and quantified the main phenolic compounds of chlorogenic and syringic acid, catechin, and glycosylated kaempferol, apigenin, and quercetin, in variable proportions. An in vitro experimental model of steatosis was developed in HepG2 hepatocytes treated with a mixture of free fatty acids. Cell culture analyses showed that cytocompatible concentrations of fluid extracts could significantly reduce the lipid accumulation and inhibit the reactive oxygen species, malondialdehyde, and nitric oxide secretion in stressed hepatocytes. In conclusion, these results put an emphasis on the chemical compounds' high antioxidant and liver protection capacity of unstudied fluid extracts obtained from Romanian cultivars of bitter cherries var. Silva and pomace of red grapes var. Mamaia, similar to the fluid extract of haskap berries var. Loni, in particular, the positive modulation of fat deposition next to oxidative stress and the lipid peroxidation process triggered by fatty acids in HepG2 hepatocytes. Consequently, this study indicated that these fluid extracts could be further exploited as hepatoprotective agents in liver steatosis, which provides a basis for the further development of novel extract mixtures with synergistic activity as anti-obesity products.

Abstract
The Folin-Ciocalteu assay is a reference method for the quantification of total (poly)phenols in food. This review explains the fundamental mechanism of the redox reaction on which the method is based and looks at some of the practical considerations concerning its application. To accurately estimate the antioxidant capacity of (poly)phenolic compounds, a thorough knowledge of their structural characteristics is essential, as the two are closely associated. Therefore, to help researchers interpret the results of the Folin-Ciocalteu method, this review also summarizes some of the main phenolic structural features. Finally, we have used the Folin-Ciocalteu method to estimate the total phenolic intake associated with high adherence to a Mediterranean diet, ranked as one of the healthiest dietary patterns, which is characterized by a high consumption of (poly)phenol-rich food such as wine, virgin olive oil, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and legumes.

Abstract
CDAC (coulometrically determined antioxidant capacity) involves the determination of the antioxidant capacity of individual compounds or their mixtures using constant-current coulometry, with electrogenerated Br2 as the titrant, and biamperometric detection of the endpoint via Br2 excess. CDAC is an accurate, sensitive, rapid, and cheap measurement of the mol electrons (mol e-) transferred in a redox process. In this study, the CDAC of 48 individual antioxidants commonly found in foods has been determined. The molar ratio CDAC (CDACχ, mol e- mol-1) of representative antioxidants is ranked as follows: tannic acid > malvidin-3-O-glucoside ≃ curcumin > quercetin > catechin ≃ ellagic acid > gallic acid > tyrosol > BHT ≃ hydroxytyrosol > chlorogenic acid ≃ ascorbic acid ≃ Trolox®. In many cases, the CDACχ ranking of the flavonoids did not comply with the structural motifs that promote electron or hydrogen atom transfers, known as the Bors criteria. As an accurate esteem of the stoichiometric coefficients for reactions of antioxidants with Br2, the CDACχ provides insights into the structure-activity relationships underlying (electro)chemical reactions. The electrochemical ratio (ER), defined as the antioxidant capacity of individual compounds relative to ascorbic acid, represents a dimensionless nutritional index that can be used to estimate the antioxidant power of any foods on an additive basis.

Abstract
Contrary to our previous report in which a Pd-catalyzed three-component reaction of a steroid alkynol, trimethyl orthoformate, and salicylaldehyde exclusively produced chroman ketals, the same reaction employing 2,5-dihydroxysalicylaldehyde led to a mixture of a chroman ketal and a spiroketal. Provided that both courses of the reaction imply a 4 + 2 inverse demand cycloaddition between an o-quinone methide and an enol ether, density functional theory calculations revealed that the chroman ketal/spiroketal selectivity is governed by both, the rate of the formation of the o-quinone methide and the isomerization of the initially produced exocyclic enol ether─that led to the spiroketal─to its endocyclic partner that produces the chroman ketal. Remarkably, Lewis catalysis is central to the observed reactivity, and the availability of plausible catalytic species controls the overall chemoselectivity. The methodology herein applied and scrutinized enriches the palette of reactions, leading to increased molecular complexity, as demonstrated in the obtained products, whose antioxidant activity and detailed NMR characterization are presented.

Abstract
Lignin, a by-product of processing lignocellulosic materials, has a polyphenolic structure and can be used as an antioxidant directly or synergistically with synthetic types of antioxidants, leading to different applications. Its antioxidant mechanism is mainly related to the production of ROS, but the details need to be further investigated. The antioxidant property of lignin is mainly related to the content of phenolic hydroxyl group, but methoxy, purity will also have an effect on it. In addition, different methods to detect the antioxidant properties of lignin have different advantages and disadvantages. In this paper, the antioxidant mechanism of lignin, the methods to determine the antioxidant activity and the progress of its application in various fields are reviewed. In addition, the current research on the antioxidant properties of lignin and the hot directions are provided, and an outlook on the research into the antioxidant properties of lignin is provided to broaden its potential application areas.

Abstract
Metallothioneins (MTs) are a family of small proteins rich in cysteine residues. The sulfhydryl group of metallothioneins can bind to metal ions, maintaining metal homeostasis and protecting the cells from damage caused by toxic heavy metals. Moreover, MTs can function as reactive oxygen species scavengers since cysteine thiols undergo reversible and irreversible oxidation. Here, we identified 21 metallothionein genes (AsMTs) in the oat (Avena sativa L.) genome, which were divided into four types depending on the amino acid sequences of putative proteins encoded by identified genes. Analysis of promoter sequences showed that MTs might respond to a variety of stimuli, including biotic and abiotic stresses and phytohormones. The results of qRT-PCR showed that all four types of AsMTs are differentially expressed during the first 48 hours of seed germination. Moreover, stress induced by the application of zinc, cadmium, and a mixture of zinc and cadmium affects the expression of oat MTs variously depending on the MT type, indicating that AsMT1-4 fulfil different roles in plant cells.

Abstract
Iron oxide nanoparticles could play a useful role in lung cancer therapy. Iron oxide nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized by plant mediated synthesis, chemical, and microbial mediated synthesis. iron oxide nanoparticle polyethylene glycol cis-diamminedichloroplatinum (Fe2O3@PEG@CDDP(, iron oxide nanoparticle polyethylene glycol (Fe2O3@PEG), and cis-diamminedichloroplatinum (CDDP) were evaluated for their antioxidant,and in vitro cytotoxicity tests. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), mapping, and zeta potential were used to characterize the synthesized iron oxides NPs. Cell toxicity was determined using A549 and HFF cells by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. The antioxidant scavenging activity of Fe2O3@PEG@CDDP, Fe2O3@PEG, and CDDP displayed IC50 values (11.96, 26.74, and 3.17 μg/ml) and (8.54, 11.4, and 1.14 μg/ml) in 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) and 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assays, respectively. Nanoparticles obtained from plant mediated synthesis method showed the great antioxidant activity. Results showed that, green-method synthesized nanoparticles were the most effective at killing cancer cells. Thus, the characteristics of nanoparticles from green synthesis are more valuable than the other methods. Green synthesis is environmental friendly cost-effective, and easy approach for synthesize NPs.

Abstract
This study prepared copper nanoparticles using an edible leaf extract from A. monanthum (AM-CuNPs) via eco-friendly green synthesis techniques. The size, shape, crystalline nature and functional groups of the synthesized AM-CuNP particles were analyzed by a UV-VIS spectrophotometer and SEM, EDX, TEM, XRD and FT-IR instrumentation. The synthesized AM-CuNPs had spherical shapes with sizes in the range of 30-80 nm and were crystalline in nature. In addition, the AM-CuNPs were synthesized using various bioactive sources, including flavonoids, phenolic acids, alkaloids and sugars that were present in an aqueous broth of A. monanthum. Furthermore, the AM-CuNPs possessed good antibacterial properties against selected major disease-causing pathogenic bacteria, such as E. coli, Salmonella typhi, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus. The antioxidant activity of AM-CuNPs exhibited potent free radical scavenging activities in DPPH, ABTS and H2O2 radical assays. In addition, in silico analysis of the AM-CuNPs was performed, including ADME prediction, and molecular simulation docking on the secondary metabolites identified in the edible plant extract was used to evaluate their anti-inflammatory applications. In particular, the molecular docking scores showed that alliin, apigenin, isorhamnetin, luteolin and myricetin have sufficient binding energy and top values as inhibitors of the protein target involved in the inflammation signaling cascade.

Abstract
Sulfoxy radicals (SORs) are oxygen- and sulfur-containing species such as SO3•-, SO4•-, and SO5•-. They can be physiologically generated by S(IV) autoxidation with transition metal catalysis. Due to their harmful effects, the detection of both SORs and their scavengers are important. Here, a simple and cost-effective method for the determination of SORs and the scavenging activity of different antioxidant compounds was proposed. A SOR was selectively generated by combining CoSO4·7H2O with Na2SO3. To detect SOR species as a whole, 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) was used as the chromogenic reagent, where SOR generated in the medium caused the formation of a blue-colored diimine from TMB. Additionally, the SOR scavenging effects of a number of antioxidant compounds (AOx) belonging to different classes were investigated, among which catechin derivatives were the most effective scavengers. The obtained results were compared with those of a reference rhodamine B decolorization assay. The radical scavenging effects of the tested AOx were ranked by both assays and then compared using the Spearman statistical test to yield a very strong correlation between the two rankings. The method was applied to real samples such as catechin-rich tea, that is, white, black, and green tea, among which white tea was determined as the most effective SOR scavenger.

Abstract
With a high number of athletes using sport supplements targeting different results, the need for complex, natural and effective formulations represents an actual reality, while nutrition dosing regimens aiming to sustain the health and performance of athletes are always challenging. In this context, the main goal of this study was to elaborate a novel and complex nutraceutical supplement based on multiple bioactive compounds extracted from Aronia melanocarpa and bee pollen, aiming to support physiological adaptations and to minimize the stress generated by intense physical activity in the case of professional or amateur athletes. Our proposed formulations are based on different combinations of Aronia and bee pollen (A1:P1, A1:P2 and A2:P1), offering personalized supplements designed to fulfill the individual requirements of different categories of athletes. The approximate composition, fatty acid profile, identification and quantification of individual polyphenols, along with the antioxidant capacity of raw biological materials and different formulations, was performed using spectrophotometric methods, GS-MS and HPLC-DAD-MS-ESI+. In terms of antioxidant capacity, our formulations based on different ratios of bee pollen and Aronia were able to act as complex and powerful antioxidant products, highlighted by the synergic or additional effect of the combinations. Overall, the most powerful synergism was obtained for the A1:P2 formulation.

Abstract
Tetrastigma hemsleyanum (Tetrastigma hemsleyanum Diels et Gilg) is a valuable traditional Chinese medicine with various applications. In this study, we aimed to optimize the extraction process for the total extraction yield of five flavonoid components, namely kaempferol, quercetin, rutin, kaempferol-3-O-rutinoside, and astragalin from the Tetrastigma hemsleyanum root (THR), and explore its potential molecular mechanisms in treating oxidative diseases as well as antioxidant activity. To achieve these objectives, we employed the genetic algorithm-back propagation neural network (GA-BPNN), the Box-Behnken design (BBD) with 4-factors and 3-levels to establish the optimal ethanol extraction process for the total extraction yield of the 5 components. Using public databases, the "component core targets-disease core target genes" networks were built, as well as molecular docking. Furthermore, DPPH was used to examine the antioxidant activity of the extracts obtained from THR under the optimal extraction process. The experimental value of the total extraction yield of the 5 components achieved a maximum of 788.12 mg/kg when the ethanol concentration was 73%, the solid-liquid ratio was 26 g/mL, and the ultrasonic duration was 30 min, and the ultrasonic temperature was 76 °C. When docked with protein molecules such as 6Y8I, quercetin, and other components received moderate to high scores. When the total concentration of the 5 components was 3.033 μg/mL, the DPPH radical scavenging rate was 89.81%. Compared with the BBD method, the GA-BPNN method is more efficient and reliable for optimizing the extraction process of active ingredients in THR because of its good data-fitting ability.

Abstract
Films and coatings manufactured with bio-based renewable materials, such as biopolymers and essential oils, could be a sustainable and eco-friendly alternative for protecting and preserving agricultural products. In this work, we developed films and coatings from pectin and chitosan to protect strawberries (Fragaria x ananassa Duch.) from spoilage and microbial contamination. We developed three coatings containing equal amounts of glycerol and Sicilian lemon essential oil (LEO) nanoemulsion. We identified seventeen chemicals from LEO by GC-MS chromatogram, including d-limonene, α-Pinene, β-Pinene, and γ-Terpinene. The pectin and chitosan coatings were further characterized using different physicochemical, mechanical, and biological methods. The films demonstrated satisfactory results in strength and elongation at the perforation as fruit packaging. In addition, the coatings did not influence the weight and firmness of the strawberry pulps. We observed that 100 % essential oil was released in 1440 min resulting from the erosion process. Also, the oil preserved the chemical stability of the films. Antioxidant activity (AA), measured by Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR), showed that the coatings loaded with 2 % LEO nanoemulsion (PC + oil) showed that almost 50 % of AA from LEO nanoemulsion was preserved. The chitosan and the pectin-chitosan coatings (PC + oil) inhibited filamentous fungi and yeast contaminations in strawberries for at least 14 days, showing a relationship between the AA and antimicrobial results.

Abstract
Mitochondrial dysfunction is an interesting therapeutic target to help reduce cancer deaths, and the use of bioactive compounds has emerged as a novel and safe approach to solve this problem. Here, we discuss the information available related to phlorotannins, a type of polyphenol present in brown seaweeds that reportedly functions as antioxidants/pro-oxidants and anti-inflammatory and anti-tumorigenic agents. Specifically, available evidence indicates that dieckol and phloroglucinol promote mitochondrial membrane depolarization and mitochondria-dependent apoptosis. Phlorotannins also reduce pro-tumorigenic, -inflammatory, and -angiogenic signaling mechanisms involving RAS/MAPK/ERK, PI3K/Akt/mTOR, NF-κB, and VEGF. In doing so, they inhibit pathways that favor cancer development and progression. Unfortunately, these compounds are rather labile and, therefore, this review also summarizes approaches permitting the encapsulation of bioactive compounds, like phlorotannins, and their subsequent oral administration as novel and non-invasive therapeutic alternatives for cancer treatment.

Abstract
A novel skeleton alkaloid was obtained from Portulaca oleracea L., which was identified as 10,11-dihydroxybenzo[5',6'] pentaleno[1',2':3,4]pyrrolo[2,1-b]oxazol-7(11bH)-one, named oleracone M, and its structure was determined using UHPLC-ESI-QTOF/MS, 1D NMR and 2D NMR spectroscopy, and circular dichroism. Then the bioactivities of the compound were investigated including the anti-inflammatory, anti-acetylcholinesterase and antioxidant activities. The results showed that the novel skeleton alkaloid exhibited the potent effect on inhibiting the secretion of IL-1β at 10 μM, anticholinesterase activity with IC50 value of 49.58 μM, and antioxidant activity with IC50 value of 66.43 μM.

Abstract
Leydig cells are essential for steroidogenesis and spermatogenesis. An imbalance in the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the cellular antioxidant level brings about oxidative stress. Oxidative stress (OS) results in the dysfunction of Leydig cells, thereby impairing steroidogenesis, spermatogenesis, and ultimately, male infertility. To prevent Leydig cells from oxidative insults, there needs to be a balance between the ROS production and the cellular protective capacity of antioxidants. Evidence indicates that medicinal plants could improve Leydig cell function at specific concentrations under basal or OS conditions. The increased usage of medicinal plants has been considered a possible alternative treatment for male infertility. This review aims to provide an overview of the impact of oxidative stress on Leydig cells as well as the effects of various medicinal plant extracts on TM3 Leydig cells. The medicinal plants of interest include Aspalathus linearis, Camellia sinensis, Moringa oleifera, Morinda officinale, Taraxacum officinale, Trichilia emetica, Terminalia sambesiaca, Peltophorum africanum, Ximenia caffra, Serenoa repens, Zingiber officinale, Eugenia jambolana, and a combination of dandelion and fermented rooibos (CRS-10). According to the findings obtained from studies conducted on the evaluated medicinal plants, it can, therefore, be concluded that the medicinal plants maintain the antioxidant profile of Leydig cells under basal conditions and have protective or restorative effects following exposure to oxidative stress. The available data suggest that the protective role exhibited by the evaluated plants may be attributed to their antioxidant content. Additionally, the use of the optimal dosage or concentration of the extracts in the management of oxidative stress is of the utmost importance, and the measurement of their oxidation reduction potential is recommended.

Abstract
The present study aimed to investigate the essential oil composition of Liparis nervosa (Thunb.) Lindl., grown in China, and to determine its antioxidant and inhibitory effects on acetylcholinesterase. The essential oil was obtained by hydrodistillation, and the chemical compounds were analyzed by GC-MS and GC-FID. We used 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS), 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), and ferric reducing assay power (FRAP) to evaluate the antioxidant activity. The anti-acetylcholinesterase activity of the essential oil was also examined. Sixty-seven compounds were identified, representing 98.50 % of the total essential oil, which was shown to be rich in methyl (9E,11E)-octadeca-9,11-dienoate (31.69%), n-hexadecanoic acid (15.08%), isopropyl palmitate (12.44%), propyl tetradecanoate (7.20%), tetradecanoic acid (4.01%), 17-octadecynoic acid (3.71%), and pentacosane (2.24%). Its antioxidant ability was analyzed via ABTS (IC50 = 721.95 ± 9.93 μg/mL), DPPH scavenging capacity (IC50 > 10,000 μg/mL), and the FRAP method (Trolox equivalent antioxidant concentration 39.64 ± 3.38 μM/g). Acetylcholinesterase inhibition effects were evaluated and had an IC50 value of 51.96 ± 14.26 μg/mL. The results show that this essential oil has interesting biological potential, encouraging further investigations, especially regarding the mechanisms of action of its antioxidant and anti-acetylcholinesterase activity. This is the first time that the chemical composition, antioxidant activity, and acetylcholinesterase inhibition effects of essential oil from L. nervosa have been studied.

Abstract
Tree peonies (Paeonia Section Moutan)-including nine wild species, which belong to subsections Vaginatae and Delavayanae-are economically important plants with ornamental, nutritional, and medicinal applications. In this study, for the first time, we determined the bioactive components and antioxidant activities and antibacterial activities of the newly grown leaves of nine wild tree peony species (WTPS). A total of 276 bioactive components were identified through non-targeted metabolomics; more than 80% of the 276 metabolites identified are terpenoids and flavonoids. A total of 42 differential metabolites were quantitatively determined. The main differential metabolites were Paeoniflorin, Luteoloside, Hyperin, Apigenin-7-glucoside, Rhoifolin, and Cantharidin. Such a high terpenoid and flavonoid content of the leaf extracts renders them as species with strong antibacterial capacities, and most of the bacteria tested showed greater sensitivity derived from the members of subsection Vaginatae than those of subsection Delavayanae. All WTPS have significant antioxidant activity; this activity is attributed to high levels of the total phenolic content (TPC) and total flavonoid content (TFC), of which, among the nine WTPS, P. lutea has the strongest antioxidant capacity. Our results provided a theoretical basis for the in-deep application of tree peony leaves for food, medical, and pharmaceutical industries.

Abstract
Backyard poultry farming contributes to food security, nutrition, and the regular income of rural farmers in India. Their products have a niche market here and fetch higher prices than those of commercial poultry. Improved varieties are being developed to overcome the slow growth, late sexual maturity, and low production of indigenous breeds, while retaining their positive attributes. A comprehensive study was conducted to analyze the functional attributes of meat from the Jabalpur color (JBC), a colored, improved dual-purpose synthetic line, developed by Nanaji Deshmukh Veterinary Science University, Jabalpur, India. The birds were managed in a deep litter system under a backyard type of housing (night shelter and free range). Primal meat cuts (breast and thigh) of the male birds (n = 20/group) were evaluated at the age of marketing. The corresponding attributes were compared with the results obtained for commercial Cobb (400) broilers. The protein concentration of JBC breast (25.65 ± 0.39 g/100 g of tissue) and thigh (19.04 ± 0.23 g/100 g of tissue) meat was superior (p ≤ 0.05) to that of Cobb broilers. Established assays (in vitro) identified a better (p ≤ 0.05) antioxidation capacity in the JBC meat. High-performance liquid chromatography confirmed a considerable quantity of functional biomolecules (carnosine, anserine, and creatine) in the JBC breast and thigh meat extracts. The average carnosine concentration (mg/g of tissue) was 2.66 ± 0.09 and 1.11 ± 0.04 in the JBC breast and thigh meat, respectively. The mRNA expression was quantified by qRT-PCR for the carnosine-related genes: β-alanine transporter (SLC36A1), carnosine-synthesizing enzyme (CARNS1), and carnosine-degrading enzyme (CNDP2); this explained the comparable carnosine in the JBC and Cobb meat. Meat extracts from both genetic groups (JBC and Cobb) had high anti-glycation potential. Higher protein content and antioxidant capacity, along with the bioactive dipeptides in the JBC meat, herald exciting research opportunities for its use in improving the traditional backyard poultry farming system.

Abstract
Herein we report the synthesis of new furanoid sugar amino acids and thioureas, prepared by coupling aromatic amino acids and dipeptides with isothiocyanato- functionalized ribofuranose ring. Since carbohydrate-derived structures possess many biological activities, synthesized compounds were evaluated as anti-amyloid and antioxidant agents. The anti-amyloid activity of the studied compounds was evaluated based on their potential to destroy amyloid fibrils of intrinsically disordered Aβ40 peptide and globular hen egg-white (HEW) lysozyme. The destructive efficiency of the compounds differed between the studied peptides. While the destruction activity of the compounds on the HEW lysozyme amyloid fibrils was negligible, the effect on Aβ40 amyloid fibrils was significantly higher. Furanoid sugar α-amino acid 1 and its dipeptide derivatives 8 (Trp-Trp) and 11 (Trp-Tyr) were the most potent anti-Aβ fibrils compounds. The antioxidant properties of synthesized compounds were estimated by three complementary in vitro assays (DPPH, ABTS, and FRAP). The ABTS assay was the most sensitive for assessing the radical scavenging activity of all tested compounds compared to the DPPH test. Significant antioxidant activity was detected for compounds in the group of aromatic amino acids depending on the present amino acid, with the highest activity in the case of dipeptides 11 and 12 containing the Tyr and Trp moiety. Regarding the FRAP assay, the best reducing antioxidant potential revealed Trp-containing compounds 5, 10, and 12.

Abstract
Desiccation is a stressful situation that decapods often experience during live transportation. This study investigated the effects of low-temperature aerial exposures (LTAEs) (dry exposure (DL) and moist exposure (ML) at 6 °C) and re-immersion on the antioxidative and immune responses and hepatopancreatic histopathology in P. clarkii. Compared to the control group (normally feeding at 24.0 °C water temperature), the crayfish under LTAEs showed overall severe hepatopancreatic oxidative damage, with significantly increased malondialdehyde (MDA) contents and significantly reduced total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC), and oxidant damage was not fully recovered even after 12 h of re-immersion; the expression of hsp70 was significantly increased within 24-48 h of stress and re-immersion. The activity of hemolymphatic acid phosphatase (ACP) was significantly increased during 24-48 h of the stress and at 12 h of re-immersion; the activity of aspartic aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) was significantly increased throughout the experiment; and the gene expression of proPO or TLR was significantly increased during 12-48 h of the stress. Severe histopathological changes (lumen dilatation, vacuolation of epithelial cells and reduced cell numbers) were observed in hepatopancreas at 48 h of stress and 12 h of re-immersion. These results indicated that 48 h of low-temperature aerial exposure stress stimulated the non-specific immunity but adversely affected the antioxidation and hepatopancreatic histomorphology of P. clarkii, whereas 12 h of re-immersion was not sufficient to restore crayfish from stress to a normal state.

Abstract
Molecular imprinting is an efficient strategy to make the detection of compounds more specific and more selective. This targeted analytical strategy using molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) synthesis needs to obtain the optimized conditions. A selective molecularly imprinted polymer was prepared for caffeic acid (CA) detection after varying the following synthesis parameters: functional monomer type (N-phenylacrylamide, N-PAA or methacrylic acid, MAA), solvent type (acetonitrile/methanol or acetonitrile/toluene), and the polymerization method (UV or thermal initiation). The optimal polymer was obtained using MAA as a functional monomer, acetonitrile/methanol as solvent, and UV polymerization. Morphological characterizations were done for the optimal CA-MIP using mid-infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and nitrogen adsorption. The optimal polymer showed good specificity and selectivity in the presence of interferents (antioxidants having a chemical structure close to CA) in a hydroalcoholic solution. The electrochemical detection of CA was performed by cyclic voltammetry (CV) after the interaction between CA and the optimal MIP in a wine sample. The linear range of the developed method was between 0 and 1.11 mM, the limit of detection (LOD) was 0.13 mM, and the limit of quantification (LOQ) was 0.32 mM. HPLC-UV was used to validate the newly developed method. Recovery values were between 104% and 111%.

Abstract
The biological activity of six structurally similar tetradentate Schiff base copper(II) complexes, namely [Cu(ethylenediamine-bis-acetylacetonate)] (CuAA) and five derivatives where two methyl groups are replaced by phenyl, (CuPP), CF3 (CuTT) or by mixed groups CH3/CF3 (CuAT), Ph/CF3 (CuPT), and Ph/CH3 (CuAP) has been investigated. The set of antioxidant assays was performed, and the results were expressed as IC50 and EC50 values. The series of complexes showed interesting bioactivity and were investigated for the determination of antioxidant, antifungal, antimicrobial, and cytotoxic activity. A significant antioxidant behavior was exhibited by complex CuAA, greater than Trolox in the Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC) assay. Antibacterial assay over Gram-positive and Gram-negative pathogenic bacterial strains and some fungal pathogens were studied. Antiproliferative activity of complexes in two human tumor cell lines, breast adenocarcinoma MCF-7, colon adenocarcinoma LS-174, and normal fibroblast cells-MRC-5, examined the effect on cell cycle progression. The significant cytotoxic potential, comparable to cisplatin cytotoxicity, was determined in human breast cancer cell line-MCF-7 with IC50 values being 17.53-31.40 μM and human colon cancer cell line-LS-174 with IC50 values being 15.22-23.92 μM. All tested compounds showed nearly twice more selectivity toward cancer cell lines than normal cells. The interactions of complexes with human serum albumin (HSA), the most prominent protein in plasma, were investigated using spectroscopic fluorescence techniques. The complexes bind to human serum albumin at multiple sites (n = 0.2-1.9), displaying a moderate binding constant Ka = 4.1-12.4 × 104 M-1. The molecular docking experiment effectively showed complex binding to HSA and DNA molecular fragments.

Abstract
Plant extracts and essential oils have a wide variety of molecules with potential application in different fields such as medicine, the food industry, and cosmetics. Furthermore, these plant derivatives are widely interested in human and animal health, including potent antitumor, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, and bactericidal activity. Given this diversity, different methodologies were needed to optimize the extraction, purification, and characterization of each class of biomolecules. In addition, these plant products can still be used in the synthesis of nanomaterials to reduce the undesirable effects of conventional synthesis routes based on hazardous/toxic chemical reagents and associate the properties of nanomaterials with those present in extracts and essential oils. Vegetable oils and extracts are chemically complex, and although they are already used in the synthesis of nanomaterials, limited studies have examined which molecules are effectively acting in the synthesis and stabilization of these nanostructures. Similarly, few studies have investigated whether the molecules coating the nanomaterials derived from these extracts and essential oils would bring benefits or somehow reduce their potential activity. This synergistic effect presents a promising field to be further explored. Thus, in this review article, we conducted a comprehensive review addressing the main groups of molecules present in plant extracts and essential oils, their extraction capacity, and available methodologies for their characterization. Moreover, we highlighted the potential of these plant products in the synthesis of different metallic nanomaterials and their antimicrobial capacity. Furthermore, we correlated the extract’s role in antimicrobial activity, considering the potential synergy between molecules from the plant product and the different metallic forms associated with nanomaterials.
