Abstract
The aim of this research was evaluation of the influence of distance between zwitterionic monomer ions on the performance of superabsorbents. For this purpose, two zwitterionic monomers 4-(3-aminopropyl) amino-4-oxo-2-butenoic acid (APOB) and 4-(6-aminohexyl) amino-4-oxo-2-butenoic acid (AHOB) were prepared and applied for synthesis of two new superabsorbents through graft copolymerization onto hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) in the presence of acrylic acid (AA). In synthesis of superabsorbents factors such as the highest water absorbency capacity, absorbency rate, gel strength, and environmental problems should be resolved or improved. The results demonstrated that the water absorbency capacity and rate parameters (τ) of HEC-g-p(AA-co-APOB) and HEC-g-p(AA-co-AHOB) in distilled water were 986.62, 664.38 g/g, and 98.04, 140.84 min, respectively. The biodegradability of HEC-g-p(AA-co-APOB) was approximately 4 times more than HEC-g-p(AA-co-AHOB). However, based on the rheological analyses (G'/G″) HEC-g-p(AA-co-AHOB) was stronger than the other. Additionally, studies of water retention on soil containing HEC-g-p(AA-co-AHOB) superabsorbent (soil with 0.25 wt% material) showed that the after 30 days has ≤5 % water while soil in the absence of superabsorbent after 10 days completely dried. Studies of the growth of plants in soil demonstrated in the presence of HEC-g-p(AA-co-AHOB) the average length of shoots was 36 cm while without superabsorbent were 25 cm.

Abstract
In this study, a new eco-friendly urea-rich sodium alginate-based hydrogel with a slow-release nitrogen property was prepared, and its effectiveness was evaluated in the cultivation of tomato plants under different water stress levels. The structure and performance of the hydrogel were investigated by FTIR, XRD, TGA, DTG, and SEM. The swelling and release experiments showed that prepared urea-rich hydrogel exhibited a high-water holding capacity (412 ± 4 g/g) and showed a sustained and slow nitrogen release property. A greenhouse pot experiment was conducted using two hydrogel levels (0.1 and 0.5 wt%) under two water deficit levels (30 and 70 % based on required water irrigation). Germination tests indicated that the developed hydrogel fertilizer has no phytotoxicity and has a positive impact on the germination rate even under water deficit conditions. The application of hydrogel fertilizer at 0.5 wt% significantly (p > 0.05) enhanced plant growth parameters such as leaf number, chlorophyll content, stem diameter, and plant length compared to the control treatment. The magnitude of the responses to the hydrogel fertilizer application depended on the concentration of applied hydrogel fertilizer and stress severity with the most positive effects on the growth and yield of tomato observed at a level of 0.5 %. Tomato yield was significantly enhanced by 19.58 %-12.81 %, 18.58 %-22.02 %, and 39.38 %-43.18 % for the plant amended with hydrogel at 0.1-0.5 wt% and grown under water deficit levels of 0, 30, and 70 %, respectively, compared to the control treatment.

Abstract
The evolution from conventional to modern agricultural practices, characterized by Agriculture 4.0 principles such as the application of innovative materials, smart water, and nutrition management, addresses the present-day challenges of food supply. In this context, polymer hydrogels have become a promising material for enhancing agricultural productivity due to their ability to retain and then release water, which can help alleviate the need for frequent irrigation in dryland environments. Furthermore, the controlled release of fertilizers by the hydrogels decreases chemical overdosing risks and the environmental impact associated with the use of agrochemicals. The potential of polymer hydrogels in sustainable agriculture and farming and their impact on soil quality is revealed by their ability to deliver nutritional and protective active ingredients. Thus, the impact of hydrogels on plant growth, development, and yield was discussed. The question of which hydrogels are more suitable for agriculture-natural or synthetic-is debatable, as both have their merits and drawbacks. An analysis of polymer hydrogel life cycles in terms of their initial material has shown the advantage of bio-based hydrogels, such as cellulose, lignin, starch, alginate, chitosan, and their derivatives and hybrids, aligning with sustainable practices and reducing dependence on non-renewable resources.

Abstract
Chitosan is a deacetylated polymer of chitin that is extracted mainly from the exoskeleton of crustaceans and is the second-most abundant polymer in nature. Chitosan hydrogels are preferred for a variety of applications in bio-related fields due to their functional properties, such as antimicrobial activity and wound healing effects; however, the existing hydrogelation methods require toxic reagents and exhibit slow gelation times, which limit their application in biological fields. Therefore, a mild and rapid gelation method is necessary. We previously demonstrated that the visible light-induced gelation of chitosan obtained through phenol crosslinking (ChPh) is a rapid gelation method. To further advance this method (<10 s), we propose a dual-crosslinked chitosan hydrogel obtained by crosslinking phenol groups and crosslinking sodium tripolyphosphate (TPP) and the amino groups of chitosan. The chitosan hydrogel was prepared by immersing the ChPh hydrogel in a TPP solution after phenol crosslinking via exposure to visible light. The physicochemical properties of the dual-crosslinked hydrogels, including Young's moduli and water retentions, were subsequently investigated. Young's moduli of the dual-crosslinked hydrogels were 20 times higher than those of the hydrogels without TPP ion crosslinking. The stiffness could be manipulated by varying the immersion time, and the water retention properties of the ChPh hydrogel were improved by TPP crosslinking. Ion crosslinking could be reversed using an iron chloride solution. This method facilitates chitosan hydrogel use for various applications, particularly tissue engineering and drug delivery.

Abstract
The ATP-BF-P(HEC-AA-AMPS) composite highly absorbent polymer was copolymerized with acrylic acid (AA) and 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid (AMPS) using an aqueous solution method with attapulgite (ATP) and attapulgite (ATP) as a matrix. The prepared ATP-BF-P(HEC-AA-AMPS) was characterized in terms of microstructure and tested for its water absorption capacity, water retention properties, and pH dynamic sensing ability. The results showed that the synthesized ATP-BF-P(HEC-AA-AMPS) had a rough and porous surface and a high water absorption capacity and rate, almost reaching the maximum water absorption around 20 min, and demonstrated excellent water retention performance at low and medium temperatures. ATP-BF-P(HEC-AA-AMPS) has a sensitive dynamic sensing ability in different pH solutions, with a high swelling capacity between pH 6.0 and 10.0. When the pH value exceeded 10.0, the swelling rate decreased rapidly. Additionally, the thermal stability and mechanical strength of the highly absorbent polymers were significantly improved after blending with ATP and BF.

Abstract
To solve the problem of shortage of agricultural water resources and low utilization rate of fertilizer, a slow-release fertilizer based on chitosan modified water retention function was developed. Solution polymerization and semi-interpenetrating network technology were used to load urea aldehyde into carboxymethyl chitosan superabsorbent resin network. This technology realizes the simultaneous slow release of nutrients and water by using modified chitosan, which has important implications for the application of chitosan in agriculture to regulate the soil water and fertilizer conditions. The optimal preparation conditions were: MBA 0.07 %, KPS 0.8 %, AM to AA mass ratio of 0.3:1, CMC content of 10 %, AA neutralization degree 85 %, UF 20 %, AA+AM mass sum of 10 g, reaction temperature 70 °C and reaction time 2 h. The maximum water absorption rate of the optimized NC reached 172.3 g/g. The cumulative release of nitrogen in 30 days was 83.67 %. The application of NC in sandy soil promoted seed germination and growth. The comprehensive results indicate that NC has broad application prospects in arid areas based on its excellent water retention and nutrient release performance.

Abstract
In this paper, an eco-friendly versatile superabsorbent material was designed for soil improvement, and a synchronous chemical loading strategy was proposed. In this strategy, urea not only acted as fertilizer but also acted as a crosslinker to construct an alginate network. The microstructure, chemical structure, thermal stability and composition of the obtained SA/urea hydrogel were characterized in detail. Adsorption behavior and application performance in agriculture were evaluated. The results demonstrated that urea had two different conformations in the network. The SA/urea hydrogel had abundant pore structures with excellent water absorption performance. It could not only improve the water retention capacity of soil but also release nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium elements with degradation for as long as 9 weeks. Moreover, the hydrogel could promote plant growth, increase the nutritional composition of plants and inhibit the accumulation of harmful nitrate in plants. With advantages, including biodegradability, high water absorption, controllable degradation, excellent water retention, sustained NPK release and improved plant nutrition value, the SA/urea hydrogel has great potential for soil improvement in agriculture as an eco-friendly versatile water retention agent and can be expected to extend to more fields as a novel superabsorbent material.

Abstract
The objective of this work is utilizing fly ash to synthesize tobermorite (TOB) with a higher specific surface area and layered structure, and incorporating it into the starch/acrylic acid network to boost the drought resistance, water retention and heavy metal adsorption properties. The water absorption and water retention performance and cadmium adsorption characteristics of tobermorite/leftover rice-based composite hydrogel (TOB@LR-CH) were evaluated by water absorption swelling test, soil evaporation test and batch adsorption experiment. By adjusting the addition of TOB and other synthesized conditions, the swelling property (from 114.80 g/g to 322.64 g/g), water retention (71.80 %, 144 h) and Cd2+ adsorption characteristics (up to 591.36 mg/g) were significantly enhanced. Adding a moderate amount of TOB (2 wt%) provided the most uniform tobermorite dispersion during synthesis, and TOB2@LR-CH exhibited the most stable three-dimensional network and highest proportion of effective TOB. The adsorption behavior of cadmium on TOB2@LR-CH was more consistent with the pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir isotherm models. Additionally, the regeneration test results displayed that the adsorption removal rate of cadmium by TOB2@LR-CH adsorbent remained stable after 5 cycles. This study demonstrates that TOB@LR-CH has good water absorption and water retention potential in arid and semi-arid soils, and also has potential application prospects in remediating Cd(II)-contaminated soil.

Abstract
In order to reduce the harmful effects of synthetic non-biodegradable hydrogel, biopolymers have attracted attention, particularly for use in slow-release fertilizers. The current attempt intends to develop a hydrogel from biopolymers for sustainable release of water and nutrients in soil. Here, guar gum is used as a polysaccharide, MMA as a monomer, KPS as an initiator, and Polylactic acid as a cross-linker. Further investigation is done to study synthesized hydrogel in the development of wheat crop. Biodegradation study shows that it's environmentally favorable and degradable, contributing nutrients to the soil as it decomposes. Fertilizer release studies in soil and water show that the timing of the nutrient release is delayed, improving soil water holding capacity and retention studies. The agronomic parameters show that fertilizers-loaded hydrogel has a positive effect on physiological, morphological characteristics like shoot length, root length, number of shoots and roots, shoot weight and root weight, chlorophyll content, and most notably, fruiting efficiency is enhanced as compared with commercially available hydrogel. ATR-FTIR, SEM-EDX, TGA-DTA, and XRD analysis used to confirm successful loading of fertilizers and biodegradation of hydrogel. The encouraging findings suggested that this hydrogel could be used as a multifunctional, fertilizers-loaded hydrogel in crop production.

Abstract
Modern agriculture presents new requirements of low cost, high water retention and degradability for superabsorbent and slow-release fertilizers. In this study, carrageenan (CG), acrylic acid (AA), N, N '-methylene diacrylamide (MBA), urea and ammonium persulfate (APS) were used as raw materials. A kind of high water absorption, water retention, nitrogen slow release and biodegradable carrageenan superabsorbent (CG-SA) was prepared by grafting copolymerization. The optimal CG-SA was obtained with a water absorption rate of 680.45 g/g by orthogonal L18(3)7 experiments and single-factor experiments. The water absorption behavior of CG-SA in deionized water and salt solution were studied. The CG-SA was characterized before and after degradation by FTIR, SEM. The nitrogen release behavior and kinetic characteristics of CG-SA were investigated. In addition, CG-SA degraded 58.33 % and 64.35 % in soil at 25 °C and 35 °C after 28 days. All the results indicated that the low-cost and degradable CG-SA can achieve simultaneous slow release of water and nutrients, which is expected to be widely used as a new water-fertilizer integration technology in arid and poor areas.

Abstract
The application of most slow-release fertilizers is limited by complex preparation processes and short slow-release periods. In this study, carbon spheres (CSs) were prepared by a hydrothermal method using cellulose as the raw material. Using CSs as the fertilizer carrier, three new carbon-based slow-release nitrogen fertilizers were prepared using direct mixing (SRF-M), water-soluble immersion adsorption (SRFS), and co-pyrolysis (SRFP) methods, respectively. Examination of the CSs revealed regular and ordered surface morphology, enrichment of functional groups on the surfaces, and good thermal stability. Elemental analysis showed that SRF-M was rich in nitrogen (total nitrogen content of 19.66 %). Soil-leaching tests showed that the total cumulative nitrogen release of SRF-M and SRF-S was 55.78 % and 62.98 %, respectively, which greatly slowed down the release of nitrogen. Pot experiment results revealed that SRF-M significantly promoted the growth of pakchoi and improved crop quality. Thus, SRF-M was more effective in practical applications than the other two slow-release fertilizers. Mechanistic studies showed that CN, -COOR, pyridine-N and pyrrolic-N participated in nitrogen release. This study thus provides a simple, effective, and economical method for the preparation of slow-release fertilizers, providing new directions for further research and the develop of new slow-release fertilizers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Lignin played an important role in the establishment of coated fertilizers coating material as a substitute for petrochemical raw materials. However, so far, the lignin-based coated fertilizers was limited in only the poor slow-release performance. To achieve good slow-release performance of lignin-based coated fertilizers, hydrophilic of lignin need to be resolved to establish an green and better controllable lignin-based coated fertilizers. RESULTS In the study, a novel green double layer coating with lignin-based polyurethane (LPU) as the inner coating and epoxy resin (EP) as the outer coating was effectively constructed for coated urea. Fourier transform infrared spectra confirmed that lignin and polycaprolactone diol successfully reacted with Hexamethylene diisocyanate. The loss weight and water contact angle (WCA, 75.6-63.6°) of the LPUs decreased with the increased lignin content. The average particle hardness of the lignin-based double-layer coated urea (LDCU) first increased from 58.1 N (lignin of 30%) to 67.0 N (lignin of 60%), but then decreased to 62.3 N (lignin of 70%). The release longevity of the coated urea was closely related to the preparation parameters of the coating material. The optimal cumulative nutrient release rate (79.4%) of LDCU was obtained (lignin of 50%, -CNO/-OH molar ratios of 1.15, EP of 35%, and coating ratio of 5%). The aggregates of hydrone on the LDCU caused the dissolution and swelling of nutrients, and then the diffusion of nutrients through the concentration gradient. CONCLUSIONS A though the nutrient release of the LDCUs was affected by many factors, the successful development of the LDCUs will help improve the rapid development of the coated fertilizer industry.

Abstract
This manuscript details the preparation and characterization of a renewable biocomposite material intended as a soil conditioner based on low-molecular-weight poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and residual biomass (wheat straw and wood sawdust). The swelling properties and biodegradability of the PLA-lignocellulose composite under environmental conditions were evaluated as indicators of its potential for applications in soil. Its mechanical and structural properties were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Results showed that the incorporation of lignocellulose waste material into PLA increased the swelling ratio of the biocomposite by up to 300%. The application of the biocomposite of 2 wt% in soil enhanced its capacity for water retention by 10%. In addition, the cross-linked structure of the material proved to be capable of swelling and deswelling repeatedly, indicating its good reusability. Incorporating lignocellulose waste in the PLA enhanced its stability in the soil environment. After 50 days of the experiment, almost 50% of the sample had degraded in the soil.

Abstract
The growth of plants is highly dependent on sufficient water and suitable fertilizer nutrients, but the soil often loses moisture and the fertilizers are low efficiency. To address this issue, the temperature-responsive hydrogels were developed using the N-vinylcaprolactam (NVCL) dispersed in water through the emulsification of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and acrylamide (AM), and urea was loaded into the hydrogel as a fertilizer. The amount of CMC and monomer have an effect on the structure, mechanical properties, swelling ability, and temperature sensitivity of the hydrogel. Therefore, the maximum swelling ratio of the hydrogel can reach 2056 % with the increasing hydrophilic groups, and the hydrogel exhibits a deswelling behavior as the temperature rises to higher than LCST due to the temperature responsiveness. Moreover, the fertilizer can rapidly release when the temperature is higher than LSCT, and exhibits similar release behavior in water and soil. Thus, the temperature-responsive hydrogel shows a great potential application for the controlled release of water and fertilizer in agriculture and forestry.

Abstract
AbstractThe present work deals with the synthesis of biodegradable hydrogel of a natural polysaccharide aloe vera and vinyl monomer acrylic acid. In this synthesis, ammonium persulfate–glutaraldehyde was used as initiator-cross-linker system, acrylic acid as monomer and aloe vera as backbone. Grafting was confirmed by different techniques like SEM, FT-IR, XRD and EDS. Maximum percentage swelling of synthesized hydrogel was found to be 756%. Biodegradation behavior of synthesized hydrogel [Av-cl-poly(AA)] was studied by soil burial, composting and vermicomposting methods. Maximum biodegradation was found to be 90%, 94% and 93% in case of soil burial, composting and vermicomposting methods, respectively. Biodegradation of Av-cl-poly(AA) was confirmed by FT-IR and SEM techniques. Water retention capacity was prolonged from 11 to 20 days using synthesized Av-cl-poly(AA). Water content of clay soil and sandy loam soil was increased to an extent of 6.1% and 5.79%, respectively. Synthesized Av-cl-poly(AA) has been found to be effective in sustained release of harmful pesticide dichlorvos. The results showed that maximum release of dichlorvos was found to be 1024.34 ppm after 44 h.

Abstract
To meet the growing food demand of increasing world population while reducing the harmful environmental effects of agrochemicals, development of smart nanoformulation is of prime importance. Herein, dual stimuli responsive alginate based microgels (OAlgDP MGs) (≈160 nm) are developed for controlled release of agrochemicals and soil remediation. These microgels are prepared using octyl amine functionalized alginate which is crosslinked by 3, 3'-dithiopropionohydrazide crosslinker providing both hydrazone and disulfide bonds in microgels network. OAlgDP MGs are further loaded with hydrophobic diuron herbicide displaying ≈85 % encapsulation efficiency. Sustained release of diuron is obtained in 2 mM GSH (≈100 % after 380 h) and at pH 5 (≈72 % after 240 h). Furthermore, OAlgDP MGs are nontoxic up to 150 μg/mL against HEK293T cells while their reduced form is capable of capturing the heavy metal ions (Cu2+ and Hg2+) showing the potential of the developed system for moving toward sustainable agriculture.

Abstract
In this feature article, we critically review the physical properties of porous hydrogels and their production methods. Our main focus is nondense hydrogels that have physical pores besides the space available between adjacent cross-links in the polymer network. After reviewing theories on the kinetics of swelling, equilibrium swelling, the structure-stiffness relationship, and solute diffusion in dense hydrogels, we propose future directions to develop models for porous hydrogels. The aim is to show how porous hydrogels can be designed and produced for studies leading to the modeling of physical properties. Additionally, different methods that are used for making hydrogels with physically incorporated pores are briefly reviewed while discussing the potentials, challenges, and future directions for each method. Among kinetic methods, we discuss bubble generation approaches including reactions, gas injection, phase separation, electrospinning, and freeze-drying. Templating approaches discussed are solid-phase, self-assembled amphiphiles, emulsion, and foam methods.

Abstract
Polymeric hydrogels based on sulfo-containing comonomers are promising materials for biotechnological application, namely, for use as a system for delivering water and minerals during seed germination in conditions of an unstable moisture zone. In this work, cryogels based on 3-sulfopropyl methacrylate and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate copolymers were obtained by the cryotropic gelation method. The morphology, specific surface area, and swelling behaviors of cryogels are found to depend on the total concentration of monomers in the reaction system and the content of the gel fraction in cryogels. Cryogels formed in the presence of nanodiamonds are shown to exhibit high biological activity during the germination of Lepidium sativum L. variety Ajur seeds, which manifests itself by stimulating seed germination and a significant increase in the raw weight of sprouts. These results indicate that sulfonic cryogels have a high potential to improve seed germination and plant growth, proving that such cryogels can be used as environmentally friendly materials for agricultural applications.

Abstract
This review presents data from the past five years on the use of polymeric superabsorbent hydrogels in agriculture as water and nutrient storage and retention materials, as well as additives that improve soil properties. The use of synthetic and natural polymeric hydrogels for these purposes is considered. Although natural polymers, such as various polysaccharides, have undoubted advantages related to their biocompatibility, biodegradability, and low cost, they are inferior to synthetic polymers in terms of water absorption and water retention properties. In this regard, the most promising are semi-synthetic polymeric superabsorbents based on natural polymers modified with additives or grafted chains of synthetic polymers, which can combine the advantages of natural and synthetic polymeric hydrogels without their disadvantages. Such semi-synthetic polymers are of great interest for agricultural applications, especially in dry regions, also because they can be used to create systems for the slow release of nutrients into the soil, which are necessary to increase crop yields using environmentally friendly technologies.

Abstract
Superabsorbent hydrogel (SH) is three-dimensional (3D) cross-linked hydrophilic polymer that can absorb and retain large quantities of water or other aqueous solutions. SH is made of water-affinity monomers and is widely used in biomedicine, wastewater treatment, hygiene and slow-release fertilizers (SRFs). This article focused on the preparation methods of SH, superabsorbent hydrogel composite and the application of SH in agriculture. By selecting various synthetic technologies and cross-linking agents, a series of chemical cross-linking or physical networks can be designed and tailored to meet specific applications. In view of the excellent characteristics of water absorption, biodegradability, water retention and slow-release capacity, SH occupies a dominant position in the SRFs market. In this work, the agricultural application of SH in double coated SRFs and nutrients carriers is also discussed. Some mechanisms related to the nutrient release were analyzed by mathematical models. In addition, some agronomic benefits of using superabsorbent hydrogels in improving water absorption, water holding capacity and increasing crop yields were also discussed. Although SH has certain shortcomings, from the perspective of long-term development, it will further show great potential in sustainable agriculture.

Abstract
In this paper, novel microgels containing nano-SiO2 were prepared by in situ copolymerization using nano-SiO2 particles as a reinforcing agent, nanosilica functional monomer (silane-modified nano-SiO2) as a structure and morphology director, acrylamide (AAm) as a monomer, acrylic acid (AAc) as a comonomer, potassium persulfate (KPS) as a polymerization initiator, and N,N'-methylene bis (acrylamide) (MBA) as a crosslinker. In addition, a conventional copolymeric hydrogel based on poly (acrylamide/acrylic acid) was synthesized by solution polymerization. The microgel samples, hydrogel and nanoparticles were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). A FESEM micrograph of copolymeric hydrogel showed the high porosity and 3D interconnected microstructure. Furthermore, FESEM results demonstrated that when nano-SiO2 particles were used in the AAm/AAc copolymerization process, the microstructure and morphology of product changed from porous hydrogel to a nanocomposite microgel with cauliflower-like morphology. According to FESEM images, the copolymerization of AAm and AAc monomers with a nanosilica functional monomer or polymerizable nanosilica particle as a seed led to a microgel with core-shell structure and morphology. These results demonstrated that the polymerizable vinyl group on nano-SiO2 particles have controlled the copolymerization and the product morphology. FTIR analysis showed that the copolymeric chains of polyacrylamide (PAAm) and poly (acrylic acid) (PAAc) were chemically bonded to the surfaces of the nano-SiO2 particles and silane-modified nano-SiO2. The particulate character of microgel samples and the existence of long distance among aggregations of particles led to rapid swelling and increasing of porosity and therefore increasing of degree of swelling.

Abstract
A set of renewable and biodegradable hydrogels based on acid whey and cellulose derivatives blended with poly(lactic acid) (PLA) were designed as eco-friendly biopolymeric material for sustainable agricultural applications. The physico-chemical properties of the hydrogel were evaluated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and rheological measurements. The effect of the whey/polysaccharide/PLA hydrogel on soil quality improvement (water retention study, biodegradability, loading capacity and release of the fertilizers) and the growth pattern of Raphanus sativus and Phaseolus vulgaris has been also studied. The addition of PLA has been found to improve mechanical properties of the hydrogel. The introduction of 20% wt PLA extended decomposition time of hydrogels by 25% which makes the material more stable in the environment and maintaining the soil humidity for longer. The increasing the amount of PLA led to a rise in hydrogel viscosity brought about better entrapment efficiency of the fertilizers (86-92% for KNO3 and 87-96% for urea, resp.) compared to control (82% for KNO3 and 85% for urea, resp.). The novel hydrogels with swelling ratio of up to 500% showed potential as a sustainable water reservoir for plants improving water retention capacity of the soil by 30%.

Abstract
A multifunctional microspheric soil conditioner based on chitosan-grafted poly(acrylamide-co-acrylic acid)/biochar [CS-g-P(AM-co-AA)/BC] was prepared. First, the P(AM-co-AA) was synthesized and successfully grafted onto CS, and the three-dimensional network structure of microspheres was formed with N,N-methylenebis(acrylamide) as the cross-linking agent according to the inverse suspension polymerization method. Meanwhile, BC and urea were encapsulated into the body of microspheres during the polymerization. The structure of the microspheres was analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, polarized optical microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy, and the mechanism of adsorption of Cu2+ on the microspheres was investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Furthermore, the experimental results demonstrated the excellent water absorption and retention capabilities of microspheres, and the release rate of urea was dramatically reduced. Importantly, the introduction of BC significantly enhanced the adsorption performance of the microspheres with respect to heavy metal ions. Consequently, the multifunctional soil conditioner held promise for use in soil improvement and agricultural production.

Abstract
In this study, cellulose-based superabsorbent hydrogel was synthesized from sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC-Na), acrylic acid (AA), and 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (AMPS) to enhance its water absorbency and salt tolerance for soil-conditioning applications in areas suffering from drought and soil salinization. Superabsorbent hydrogels (SHs) were prepared by CMC-Na and AMPS successfully, using chemical graft technology. Structure, morphology, thermal stability, and water absorbency of SHs were deduced. The cellulose-based hydrogel showed a high salt tolerance that the maximum water absorbency reached 604 and 119% in distilled water and saline water, respectively. The swelling behavior in aqueous solvents indicated that the water absorption of hydrogels was improved with the increasing ratio of CMC-Na. All SHs exhibited adsorption of nitrogen with the maximum adsorption of ammonia nitrogen 30 mg·g-1 and the presence of hydrogels could slow down the loss of nutrients in the soil. This study provided a feasible strategy that AMPS was substituted by CMC-Na to synthesize SHs with strong water absorbency and high salt tolerance which could be efficiently applied in agriculture as a soil conditioner.

Abstract
Increasing global population and decreasing arable land pose tremendous pressures to agricultural production. The application of conventional chemical fertilizers improves agricultural production, but causes serious environmental problems and significant economic burdens. Biochar gains increasing interest as a soil amendment. Recently, more and more attentions have been paid to biochar-based slow-release of fertilizers (SRFs) due to the unique properties of biochar. This review summarizes recent advances in the development, synthesis, application, and tentative mechanism of biochar-based SRFs. The development mainly undergoes three stages: (i) soil amendment using biochar, (ii) interactions between nutrients and biochar, and (iii) biochar-based SRFs. Various methods are proposed to improve the fertilizer efficiency of biochar, majorly including in-situ pyrolysis, co-pyrolysis, impregnation, encapsulation, and granulation. Considering the distinct features of different methods, the integrated methods are promising for fabricating effective biochar-based SRFs. The in-depth understanding of the mechanism of nutrient loading and slow release is discussed based on current knowledge. Additionally, the perspectives and challenges of the potential application of biochar-based SRFs are described. Knowledge surveyed from this review indicates that applying biochar-based SRFs is a viable way of promoting sustainable agriculture.

Abstract
Recently, hydrogels have been investigated for the controlled release of bioactive molecules, such as for living cell encapsulation and matrices. Due to their remote controllability and quick response, hydrogels are widely used for various applications, including drug delivery. The rate and extent to which the drugs reach their targets are highly dependent on the carriers used in drug delivery systems; therefore the demand for biodegradable and intelligent carriers is progressively increasing. The biodegradable nature of hydrogel has created much interest for its use in drug delivery systems. The first part of this review focuses on emerging fabrication strategies of hydrogel, including physical and chemical cross-linking, as well as radiation cross-linking. The second part describes the applications of hydrogels in various fields, including drug delivery systems. In the end, an overview of the application of hydrogels prepared from several natural polymers in drug delivery is presented.

Abstract
Water shortages have become a serious issue, so the importance of developing innovative cellulose-based superabsorbent polymer (SAP) was experimentally assessed as an environmentally friendly alternative to acrylate-based SAPs for the optimization of water consumption. The development of a biodegradable superabsorbent hydrogel composite based on a graft copolymer of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and mixtures of different comonomers such as an acrylamide-co-acrylic acid-co-2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (Am-co-AA-co-AMPS) CMC-g-TerPoly interpenetrating network was characterized by infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scan electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscope (AFM), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), and swelling capacity in different aqueous media. The optimized CMC-g-(TerPoly) composite showing outstanding superabsorbance with high water retention, the ratio of constituents, temperature, and pH effect on equilibrium swelling have been optimized by using multistage response surface methodology (RSM). In distilled water (d-water), the equilibrium water absorption capacity (EW) of the synthesized composite hydrogels (SAP-IPN1) is 1200 g (d-water/1g hydrogel) which is superior to any other commercial polyacrylate SAP hydrogels, while in saline water the EW is 650 g (s-water/1g hydrogel). The performance of the SAP-IPN for water retention was evaluated by studying several swelling/deswelling cycle measurements. The prepared SAP-IPN hydrogels were found to show pH and salt solution dependence on the swelling behavior. The new SAP-IPN can work with commercial SAP, which is recommended for application as a water reservoir in arid land for irrigation for agriculture purposes.

Abstract
Absorbent polymers or hydrogel polymer materials have an enhanced water retention capacity and are widely used in agriculture and medicine. The controlled release of bioactive molecules (especially drug proteins) by hydrogels and the encapsulation of living cells are some of the active areas of drug discovery research. Hydrogel-based delivery systems may result in a therapeutically advantageous outcome for drug delivery. They can provide various sequential therapeutic agents including macromolecular drugs, small molecule drugs, and cells to control the release of molecules. Due to their controllable degradability, ability to protect unstable drugs from degradation and flexible physical properties, hydrogels can be used as a platform in which various chemical and physical interactions with encapsulated drugs for controlled release in the system can be studied. Practically, hydrogels that possess biodegradable properties have aroused greater interest in drug delivery systems. The original three-dimensional structure gets broken down into non-toxic substances, thus confirming the excellent biocompatibility of the gel. Chemical crosslinking is a resource-rich method for forming hydrogels with excellent mechanical strength. But in some cases the crosslinker used in the synthesis of the hydrogels may cause some toxicity. However, the physically cross-linked hydrogel preparative method is an alternative solution to overcome the toxicity of cross-linkers. Hydrogels that are responsive to stimuli formed from various natural and synthetic polymers can show significant changes in their properties under external stimuli such as temperature, pH, light, ion changes, and redox potential. Stimulus-responsive hydrogels have a wider range of applications in biomedicine including drug delivery, gene delivery and tissue regeneration. Stimulus-responsive hydrogels loaded with multiple drugs show controlled and sustained drug release and can act as drug carriers. By integrating stimulus-responsive hydrogels, such as those with improved thermal responsiveness, pH responsiveness and dual responsiveness, into textile materials, advanced functions can be imparted to the textile materials, thereby improving the moisture and water retention performance, environmental responsiveness, aesthetic appeal, display and comfort of textiles. This review explores the stimuli-responsive hydrogels in drug delivery systems and examines super adsorbent hydrogels and their application in the field of agriculture.

Abstract
The development of slow-release phosphorus fertilizers (SRFs) with high water retention is of significance for modern agriculture. Herein, a new class of biochar-based SRFs are developed by an integrated co-pyrolysis and co-polymerization process (PSRFs). The water-retention performance and P slow-release behavior of PSRFs are evaluated, which are compared with other types of biochar-based SRFs derived from biochar-based phosphorus adsorption (MSRFs), co-pyrolysis of biomass-bentonite-nutrients (BSRFs), and the application of coating on BSRFs (CSRFs). The results show that the obtained PSRFs exhibits high water retention with the maximum swelling capacity of 94.2 g/g, far outstripping other tested SRFs. The water-retention performance of PSRFs is found to be positively correlated with their crosslinking agent contents. In addition, PSRFs has excellent P slow-release performance which is comparable with CSRFs (~51.5% of P release after 30 days), but much better than MSRFs and BSRFs with a complete P release after 30 days. Furthermore, pot experiments reveal that PSRFs has the highest P utilization efficiency (75.83% after 60 days), which can promote the growth of pepper seedlings better than other SRFs. Moreover, the soil burial tests indicate that PSRFs has a good biodegradability with the degradation ratio of 33.46% in 75 days. Finally, biological abundance analysis further reveals that Actinobacteria in soil is mainly responsible for the metabolism of starch and sodium alginate in PSRFs.

Abstract
To reduce the preparation cost of superabsorbent composites (SACs) and improve the water and fertilizer retention properties of soil, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose grafted with acrylic acid, polyaspartic acid and palygorskite (HPMC-g-P(AA-co-PASP)/ATP) was synthesized by aqueous solution polymerization and used to reduce of preventing water leakage in soil. The structure, surface morphology and thermal stability of the optimized SACs were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and thermal gravimetric analysis. Under optimum synthesis conditions, the maximum equilibrium absorption of SACs was 1785 g·g-1, 254 g·g-1, 138 g·g-1 in deionized water, tap water and NaCl solution (0.9 wt%) respectively. Application of the SACs to soils increased their water holding and water retention capacities. In addition, the reduced leaching of added urea and low water permeability of the treated soils indicated that the SACs has the potential for applications in future sustainable agriculture.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The cumulative influence of global warming, climate abrupt changes, growing population, topsoil erosion is becoming a threatening alarm for facing food challenges and upcoming global water issues. It ultimately affects the production of food in a water-stressed environment and slows down the production with more consumption of fertilizers by plants. The superabsorbent hydrogels (SAHs) have extensive applications in the agricultural field and proved very beneficial for plant growth and soil health. These polymeric materials are remarkably distinct from hygroscopic materials owing to their multidimensional network structure. It retains a lot of water in its 3D network and releases it slowly along with nutrients to plant in stressed environment. AIM OF REVIEW A soil conditioner boosts up the topology, compactness, and mechanical properties (swelling, water retention, and slow nutrient release) of soil. The superabsorbent hydrogel plays an astonishing role in preventing the loss of nutrients during the heavy flow of rainwater from the upper surface of soil because these SAHs absorb water and get swollen to keep water for longer time. The SAHs facilitate the growth of plants with limited use of water and fertilizers. Beyond, it improves the soil health and makes it fertile in horticulture and drought areas. KEY SCIENTIFIC CONCEPT OF REVIEW The SAHs can be synthesized through grafting and cross-linking polymerization to introduce value-added features and extended network structure. The structure of superabsorbent hydrogel entirely based on cross-linking that prompts its use in the agricultural field as a soil conditioner. The properties of a SAHs vary due to its nature of constituents, polymerization process (grafting or cross-linking), and other parameters. The use of SAHs in agricultural field comparatively enhances the swelling rate up to 60-80%, maximum water retaining, and slowly nutrient release to plants for a longer time.

Abstract
Effective fertilizers management is essential for sustainable agricultural practices. One way to improve agronomic practices is by using slow-release fertilizers (SRF) that have shown interesting role in optimizing nutrients availability for plants growth. Considering the current ecological concerns, coated SRF using ecofriendly materials continue to attract great attention. In this context, novel waterborne and biodegradable coating nanocomposite formulations were elaborated from cellulose nanocrystals (CNC)-filled poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) for slow release NPK fertilizer with water retention property. CNC were extracted from hemp stalks using sulfuric acid hydrolysis process and their physico-chemical characteristics were investigated. CNC with various weight loadings (6, 10, 14.5 wt%) were incorporated into PVA polymer via solvent mixing method to produce viscous coating nanocomposite formulations with moderated shear viscosity. Uniform PVA@CNC coating microlayer was applied on the surface of NPK fertilizer granules in Wurster chamber of a fluidized bed dryer at controlled spraying and drying parameters. The nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium release profiles from coated NPK fertilizer were determined in water and soil. It was found that the coating materials extended the N-P-K nutrients release time from 3 days for uncoated fertilizer to 10 and 30 days for neat PVA- and CNC/PVA-coated fertilizer in soil medium, indicating the positive role of the presence of CNC in the PVA-based coatings. The morphology, coating rate and crushing strength of the as-prepared coated products were investigated in addition to their effect on water holding capacity and water retention of the soil. Enhanced crushing strength and water retention with a positive effect on the soil moisture were observed after coating NPK fertilizer, mainly with high CNC content (14.5 wt%). Therefore, these proposed nanocomposite coating materials showed a great potential for producing a new class of SRF with high nutrients use efficiency and water retention capacity, which could be beneficial to sustainable crop production.

Abstract
Advances in hydrogel technology have unlocked unique and valuable capabilities that are being applied to a diverse set of translational applications. Hydrogels perform functions relevant to a range of biomedical purposes-they can deliver drugs or cells, regenerate hard and soft tissues, adhere to wet tissues, prevent bleeding, provide contrast during imaging, protect tissues or organs during radiotherapy, and improve the biocompatibility of medical implants. These capabilities make hydrogels useful for many distinct and pressing diseases and medical conditions and even for less conventional areas such as environmental engineering. In this review, we cover the major capabilities of hydrogels, with a focus on the novel benefits of injectable hydrogels, and how they relate to translational applications in medicine and the environment. We pay close attention to how the development of contemporary hydrogels requires extensive interdisciplinary collaboration to accomplish highly specific and complex biological tasks that range from cancer immunotherapy to tissue engineering to vaccination. We complement our discussion of preclinical and clinical development of hydrogels with mechanical design considerations needed for scaling injectable hydrogel technologies for clinical application. We anticipate that readers will gain a more complete picture of the expansive possibilities for hydrogels to make practical and impactful differences across numerous fields and biomedical applications.

Abstract
Nanogel carriers are rapidly emerged as a major delivery strategy in the fields of food, biology and medicine for small particle size, excellent solubility, high loading, and controlled release. Natural polysaccharides and proteins are selected for the preparation of biocompatible, biodegradable, low toxic, and less immunogenic nanogels. Different polysaccharides and proteins form complex nanogels through different interaction forces (e.g., electrostatic interaction and hydrophobic interaction). The present review pursues three aims: 1) to introduce several well-known dietary polysaccharides (chitosan, dextran and alginate) and proteins (whey protein and lysozyme); 2) to discuss the types, preparation methods, chemical interactions and properties of various biocompatible complex carriers; 3) to present the application and prospect of polysaccharide-protein complex in bioactive ingredient delivery, nutrient encapsulation and flavor protection. We expect that the integration with nano-intelligent technology will improve the functional ingredient loading, recognition specificity and controlled release capabilities of polysaccharide-protein nanocomposites to generate new intelligent nanogels in the field of food industry in the future.

Abstract
To enhance waste straw utilization and improve fertilizer efficiency, a novel semi-interpenetrating polymer network fertilizer (CMCK-g-PAA/PDMUP) was prepared from straw cellulose and linear polymer by solution polymerization. Polydihydroxymethyl-urea potassium phosphate (PDMUP) was included to supply nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium nutrients. Characterization of CMCK-g-PAA/PDMUP with FTIR, XPS, XRD, and SEM techniques provided evidence for semi-interpenetrating polymer networks (semi-IPNs) and component interactions. The prepared product exhibited excellent water absorbency (681.3 g/g) and enhanced the soil's water-retention capacity. Cumulative release of N, P, and K was 56.1%, 64.3%, and 74.1%, respectively, after 40 days-meeting a Committee of European Normalization (CEN) standard. Agricultural application of CMCK-g-PAA/PDMUP promoted wheat growth. Desirable water retention, slow-release properties, and wheat growth effects highlight the product's potential for improving agriculture.

Abstract
With the aim of improving water absorption and controlled release performance of current controlled release fertilizers, a novel composite coating method for superabsorbent-polyurethane coated urea (SAPCU) was developed. Superabsorbent-polyurethane (SAPU) composite coating material was successfully formed through an insitu reaction, where castor oil polyurethane (COP) and superabsorbent polymer (SAP) were connected through urethane bonds with an optimal reaction ratio of SAP and PAPI as 2.5:1 (w w-1). The ideal nitrogen release and water absorption characteristics of SAPCU were achieved by adjusting the amount of COP and SAPU. The SAPCU had a high total nitrogen content (40.23-42.14 %), large swelling ratios (120-160 g water/g SAPU), and long nitrogen release period (60-150 days).

Abstract
Abstract
A triple interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) with dual responses to temperature and pH was constructed based on chemical crosslinking and electrostatic interaction. In this IPN, CaCO3 microspheres were used as the kernel and PNIPAAM/sodium alginate microcapsules were prepared by the inverse emulsion polymerization method. Research results demonstrated that CaCO3 kernels were decomposed into Ca2+ and CO2 at pH 1.2. Such decomposition facilitated the formation of triple IPN of Ca2+ crosslinking. Moreover, microcapsules were expanded by tension of CO2 and the volume increased to 3.55 × 105 times that of the original microcapsules, with capsules remaining an intact morphology. These microcapsules loading doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX) stability and responses to environment were investigated. No drug overflow was observed at pH 7.4, indicating the high stability of microcapsules. However, DOX was released gradually in the simulated human stomach acid with a weak solution of hydrochloric acid (pH 1.2, 37 °C). This showed that the prepared microcapsules were feasible for drug-loaded capsules and the controlled drug release behavior could relieve side effects of drugs to human body. Moreover, it will help to increase the drug utilization and realize accurate treatment.

Abstract
Synergistic use of superabsorbent hydrogels has vital contribution to the daily life. This work gives an account of a facile approach to synthesize superabsorbent hydrogels based on Moringa oleifera gum and polyvinyl alcohol cross-linked with borax. Fourier transform infrared, X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy were employed to characterize the structure, crystallinity, and surface morphologies of the samples. The cross-link density, swelling ratio, reswelling, water retention properties, and salt sensitivity of hydrogels were investigated. Reaction parameters for the hydrogel synthesis were optimized on the basis of water absorbency, and the reaction condition of greater water absorbency after 12 h at room temperature was taken as an ideal condition. Optimum conditions were obtained as [poly(vinyl alcohol) PVA] = 10% (w/v) and [borax] = 1.05 × 10-3 mol/L. Under the optimized conditions, the maximum swelling ratio of MOG/PVA hydrogel reached 1163 g/g in deionized water and 290 g/g in 0.9 wt % NaCl solution. Furthermore, all hydrogels exhibited salt sensitivity and excellent water retention capacity under the high temperature state and displayed smart swelling behaviors in physiological saline solutions. The water absorbency, reusability, and salt sensitivity of the hydrogels give these smart polymer wide promising applications.
