Nanoengineered Superhydrophobic Surfaces of Aluminum with Extremely Low Bacterial Adhesivity

Wettability and Bactericidal Properties of Bioinspired ZnO Nanopillar Surfaces

Nanomaterials of zinc oxide (ZnO) exhibit antibacterial activities under ambient illumination that result in cell membrane permeability and disorganization, representing an important opportunity for health-related applications. However, the development of antibiofouling surfaces incorporating ZnO nanomaterials has remained limited. In this work, we fabricate superhydrophobic surfaces based on ZnO nanopillars. Water droplets on these superhydrophobic surfaces exhibit small contact angle hysteresis (within 2-3°) and a minimal tilting angle of 1°. Further, falling droplets bounce off when impacting the superhydrophobic ZnO surfaces with a range of Weber numbers (8-46), demonstrating that the surface facilitates a robust Cassie-Baxter wetting state. In addition, the antibiofouling efficacy of the surfaces has been established against model pathogenic Gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli (E. coli). No viable colonies of E. coli were recoverable on the superhydrophobic surfaces of ZnO nanopillars incubated with cultured bacterial solutions for 18 h. Further, our tests demonstrate a substantial reduction in the quantity of S. aureus that attached to the superhydrophobic ZnO nanopillars. Thus, the superhydrophobic ZnO surfaces offer a viable design of antibiofouling materials that do not require additional UV illumination or antimicrobial agents.

Engineered Sustainable Omniphobic Coatings to Control Liquid Spreading on Food-Contact Materials

The adhesion of sticky liquid foods to a contacting surface can cause many technical challenges. The food manufacturing sector is confronted with many critical issues that can be overcome with long-lasting and highly nonwettable coatings. Nanoengineered biomimetic surfaces with distinct wettability and tunable interfaces have elicited increasing interest for their potential use in addressing a broad variety of scientific and technological applications, such as antifogging, anti-icing, antifouling, antiadhesion, and anticorrosion. Although a large number of nature-inspired surfaces have emerged, food-safe nonwetted surfaces are still in their infancy, and numerous structural design aspects remain unexplored. This Review summarizes the latest scientific research regarding the key principles, fabrication methods, and applications of three important categories of nonwettable surfaces: superhydrophobic, liquid-infused slippery, and re-entrant structured surfaces. The Review is particularly focused on new insights into the antiwetting mechanisms of these nanopatterned structures and discovering efficient platform methodologies to guide their rational design when in contact with food materials. A detailed description of the current opportunities, challenges, and future scale-up possibilities of these nanoengineered surfaces in the food industry is also provided.

Mechanically strong micro-nano fibrillated cellulose paper with improved barrier and water-resistant properties for replacing plastic

Replacing nonbiodegradable plastics with environmentally friendly cellulose materials has emerged as a key trend in environmental protection. This study highlights the development of a strong and hydrophobic micro-nano fibrillated cellulose paper (MNP) through the incorporation of micro-nano fibrillated cellulose fiber (MNF) and chitin nanocrystal (Ch), followed by the impregnation of polymethylsiloxane (PMHS). A low-acid, heat-assisted colloidal grinding strategy was employed to prepare MNF with a high aspect ratio effectively. Ch was incorporated as a reinforcing matrix into the cellulose fiber scaffold through straightforward mechanical mixing and mechanical hot-pressing treatments. Compared to pure MNP, the 5Ch-MNP exhibited a 25 % improvement in tensile strength, reaching 170 MPa, and showed enhanced barrier properties against oxygen and water vapor. The impregnation of PMHS rapidly confers environmentally resistant hydrophobic properties to 1 % PMHS-5Ch-MNP, leading to a water contact angle exceeding 112°, and a 290 % increase in tensile strength under wet conditions. Additionally, the paper demonstrated excellent antibacterial adhesion properties, with the adhesion rates for E. coli and S. aureus exceeding 98 %. This study successfully produced functional cellulose paper with remarkable mechanical properties and barrier properties, as well as hydrophobicity, using a simple, efficient, and environmentally friendly method, making it a promising substitute for petroleum-based plastics.

A comprehensive review on anticorrosive/antifouling superhydrophobic coatings: Fabrication, assessment, applications, challenges and future perspectives

Superhydrophobicity (SHP) is an incredible phenomenon of extreme water repellency of surfaces ubiquitous in nature (E.g. lotus leaves, butterfly wings, taro leaves, mosquito eyes, water-strider legs, etc). Historically, surface exhibiting water contact angle (WCA) > 150° and contact angle hysteresis <10° is considered as SHP. The SHP surfaces garnered considerable attention in recent years due to their applications in anti-corrosion, anti-fouling, self-cleaning, oil-water separation, viscous drag reduction, anti-icing, etc. As corrosion and marine biofouling are global problems, there has been focused efforts in combating these issues using innovative environmentally friendly coatings designs taking cues from natural SHP surfaces. Over the last two decades, though significant progress has been made on the fabrication of various SHP surfaces, the practical adaptation of these surfaces for various applications is hampered, mainly because of the high cost, non-scalability, lack of simplicity, non-adaptability for a wide range of substrates, poor mechanical robustness and chemical inertness. Despite the extensive research, the exact mechanism of corrosion/anti-fouling of such coatings also remains elusive. The current focus of research in recent years has been on the development of facile, eco-friendly, cost-effective, mechanically robust chemically inert, and scalable methods to prepare durable SHP coating on a variety of surfaces. Although there are some general reviews on SHP surfaces, there is no comprehensive review focusing on SHP on metallic and alloy surfaces with corrosion-resistant and antifouling properties. This review is aimed at filling this gap. This review provides a pedagogical description with the necessary background, key concepts, genesis, classical models of superhydrophobicity, rational design of SHP, coatings characterization, testing approaches, mechanisms, and novel fabrication approaches currently being explored for anticorrosion and antifouling, both from a fundamental and practical perspective. The review also provides a summary of important experimental studies with key findings, and detailed descriptions of the evaluation of surface morphologies, chemical properties, mechanical, chemical, corrosion, and antifouling properties. The recent developments in the fabrication of SHP -Cr-Mo steel, Ti, and Al are presented, along with the latest understanding of the mechanism of anticorrosion and antifouling properties of the coating also discussed. In addition, different promising applications of SHP surfaces in diverse disciplines are discussed. The last part of the review highlights the challenges and future directions. The review is an ideal material for researchers practicing in the field of coatings and also serves as an excellent reference for freshers who intend to begin research on this topic.

Reusable mechano-bactericidal surface with echinoid-shaped hierarchical micro/nano-structure

Biofilms formed owing to the attachment of bacteria to surfaces have caused various problems in industries such as marine transportation/logistics and medicine. In response, many studies have been conducted on bactericidal surfaces, and nanostructured surfaces mimicking cicada and dragonfly wings are emerging as candidates for mechano-bactericidal surfaces. In specific circumstances involving mechano-bactericidal activity, certain nanostructured surfaces could exhibit their bactericidal effects by directly deforming the membranes of bacteria that adhere to these nanostructures. Additionally, in most cases, debris of bacterial cells may accumulate on these nanostructured surfaces. Such accumulation poses a significant challenge: it diminishes the mechano-bactericidal effectiveness of the surface, as it hinders the direct interaction between the nanostructures and any new bacteria that attach subsequently. In specific circumstances involving mechano-bactericidal activity, certain nanostructured surfaces could exhibit their bactericidal effects by directly deforming the membranes of bacteria that adhere to these nanostructures. Additionally, in most cases, debris of bacterial cells may accumulate on these nanostructured surfaces. Such accumulation poses a significant challenge: it diminishes the mechano-bactericidal effectiveness of the surface, as it hinders the direct interaction between the nanostructures and any new bacteria that attach subsequently.In other words, there is a need for strategies to remove the accumulated bacterial debris in order to sustain the mechano-bactericidal effect of the nanostructured surface. In this study, hierarchical micro/nano-structured surface (echinoid-shaped nanotextures were formed on Al micro-particle's surfaces) was fabricated using a simple pressure-less sintering method, and effective bactericidal efficiency was shown against E. coli (97 ± 3.81%) and S. aureus (80 ± 9.34%). In addition, thermal cleaning at 500 °C effectively eliminated accumulated dead bacterial debris while maintaining the intact Al2O3 nanostructure, resulting in significant mechano-bactericidal activity (E. coli: 89 ± 6.86%, S. aureus: 75 ± 8.31%). As a result, thermal cleaning maintains the intact nanostructure and allows the continuance of the mechano-bactericidal effect. This effect was consistently maintained even after five repetitive use (E. coli: 80 ± 16.26%, S. aureus: 76 ± 12.67%).

A Hypothetical Approach to Concentrate Microorganisms from Human Urine Samples Using Paper-Based Adsorbents for Point-of-Care Molecular Assays

This hypothesis demonstrates that the efficiency of loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) for nucleic acid detection can be positively influenced by the preconcentration of microbial cells onto hydrophobic paper surfaces. The mechanism of this model is based on the high affinity of microbes towards hydrophobic surfaces. Extensive studies have demonstrated that hydrophobic surfaces exhibit enhanced bacterial and fungal adhesion. By exploiting this inherent affinity of hydrophobic paper substrates, the preconcentration approach enables the adherence of a greater number of target cells, resulting in a higher concentration of target templates for amplification directly from urine samples. In contrast to conventional methods, which often involve complex procedures, this approach offers a simpler, cost-effective, and user-friendly alternative. Moreover, the integration of cell adhesion, LAMP amplification, and signal readout within paper origami-based devices can provide a portable, robust, and highly efficient platform for rapid nucleic acid detection. This innovative hypothesis holds significant potential for point-of-care (POC) diagnostics and field surveillance applications. Further research and development in this field will advance the implementation of this technology, contributing to improved healthcare systems and public health outcomes.

Recent Advances in Dual-Function Superhydrophobic Antibacterial Surfaces

Bacterial adhesion and subsequent biofilm formation on the surfaces of synthetic materials imposes a significant burden in various fields, which can lead to infections in patients or reduce the service life of industrial devices. Therefore, there is increasing interest in imbuing surfaces with antibacterial properties. Bioinspired superhydrophobic surfaces with high water contact angles (>150°) exhibit excellent surface repellency against contaminations, thereby preventing initial bacterial adhesion and inhibiting biofilm formation. However, conventional superhydrophobic surfaces typically lack long-term durability and are incapable of achieving persistent efficacy against bacterial adhesion. To overcome these limitations, in recent decades, dual-function superhydrophobic antibacterial surfaces with both bacteria-repelling and bacteria-killing properties have been developed by introducing bactericidal components. These surfaces have demonstrated improved long-term antibacterial performance in addressing the issues associated with surface-attached bacteria. This review summarizes the recent advancements of these dual-function superhydrophobic antibacterial surfaces. First, a brief overview of the fabrication strategies and bacteria-repelling mechanism of superhydrophobic surfaces is provided and then the dual-function superhydrophobic antibacterial surfaces are classified into three types based on the bacteria-killing mechanism: i) mechanotherapy, ii) chemotherapy, and iii) phototherapy. Finally, the limitations and challenges of current research are discussed and future perspectives in this promising area are proposed.

Prolonged release of an antimicrobial peptide GL13K-loaded thermosensitive hydrogel on a titanium surface improves its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties

The application of titanium in the orthopedic and dental fields is associated with bacterial infection and chronic inflammation, especially in the early stages after its implantation. In the present study, we investigated the antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activities of a titanium surface that was immobilized in a thermosensitive PLGA-PEG-PLGA hydrogel containing the antimicrobial peptide GL13K. The FTIR results confirmed the successful loading of GL13K. The degradation of the hydrogel and release of GL13K persisted for two weeks. The modified titanium surface exhibited a significant inhibitory effect on Porphyromonas gingivalis in contact with its surface, as well as an inhibitory effect on P.g in the surrounding environment by releasing GL13K antimicrobial peptides. The modified titanium surfaces were biocompatible with RAW264.7. Furthermore, the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-1β, TNF-α and iNOS was down-regulated, whereas anti-inflammatory cytokines Arg-1, IL-10 and VEGF-A were up-regulated on the modified titanium surfaces on days 3 and 5. This effect was attributed to the polarization of macrophages from the M1 to M2 phenotype, which was confirmed by the detection of macrophage M1/M2 biomarkers via immunofluorescence staining and flow cytometry. Thus, the thermosensitive PLGA-PEG-PLGA hydrogel release system carrying the antimicrobial peptide GL13K on a titanium surface exhibited antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties and promoted macrophage polarization from the M1 to M2 phenotype, which may help create a favourable niche for bone formation under infective condition.

Stable Superhydrophobic and Antimicrobial ZnO/Polytetrafluoroethylene Films via Radio Frequency (RF) Magnetron Sputtering

In this study, superhydrophobic ZnO/Polytetrafluoroethylene (ZnO/PTFE) films with water droplet contact angles (CA) observed as high as 165° and water droplet sliding angles of (SA) <1° have been prepared on glass substrates by RF magnetron sputtering. The PTFE was wrapped on a nano-rod made of a ZnO film with superhydrophobic properties while providing excellent UV resistance compared to hexadecyltrimethoxysilane (HDTMS) hydrophobic agents. The upper surface of the rough ZnO film was coated with PTFE, and most of the underlying coating was bare ZnO, which could well make contact with bacteria. For the Gram-negative strain, E. coli, the cell viability count of the ZnO/PTFE sample (3.5 log reduction, 99.96%) was conspicuously lower than that of the ZnO/HDTMS sample (1.2 log reduction, 93.87%) under 1 h illumination of UV light, which showed that the ZnO/PTFE sample has a better photocatalytic property than the ZnO/ HDTMS films. The ZnO/PTFE films also showed good mechanical robustness, which is an important consideration in their widespread real-world adoption.

Microfluidics for Biofilm Studies

Biofilms are multicellular communities held together by a self-produced extracellular matrix and exhibit a set of properties that distinguish them from free-living bacteria. Biofilms are exposed to a variety of mechanical and chemical cues resulting from fluid motion and mass transport. Microfluidics provides the precise control of hydrodynamic and physicochemical microenvironments to study biofilms in general. In this review, we summarize the recent progress made in microfluidics-based biofilm research, including understanding the mechanism of bacterial adhesion and biofilm development, assessment of antifouling and antimicrobial properties, development of advanced in vitro infection models, and advancement in methods to characterize biofilms. Finally, we provide a perspective on the future direction of microfluidics-assisted biofilm research.

Demonstrating the In Vitro and In Situ Antimicrobial Activity of Oxide Mineral Microspheres: An Innovative Technology to Be Incorporated into Porous and Nonporous Materials

The antimicrobial activity of surfaces treated with zinc and/or magnesium mineral oxide microspheres is a patented technology that has been demonstrated in vitro against bacteria and viruses. This study aims to evaluate the efficiency and sustainability of the technology in vitro, under simulation-of-use conditions, and in situ. The tests were undertaken in vitro according to the ISO 22196:2011, ISO 20473:2013, and NF S90-700:2019 standards with adapted parameters. Simulation-of-use tests evaluated the robustness of the activity under worst-case scenarios. The in situ tests were conducted on high-touch surfaces. The in vitro results show efficient antimicrobial activity against referenced strains with a log reduction of >2. The sustainability of this effect was time-dependent and detected at lower temperatures (20 ± 2.5 °C) and humidity (46%) conditions for variable inoculum concentrations and contact times. The simulation of use proved the microsphere's efficiency under harsh mechanical and chemical tests. The in situ studies showed a higher than 90% reduction in CFU/25 cm² per treated surface versus the untreated surfaces, reaching a targeted value of <50 CFU/cm². Mineral oxide microspheres can be incorporated into unlimited surface types, including medical devices, to efficiently and sustainably prevent microbial contamination.

Multifunctional Edible Oil-Impregnated Nanoporous Oxide Layer on AISI 304 Stainless Steel

Slippery liquid-infused porous surface (SLIPS) realized on commercial materials provides various functionalities, such as corrosion resistance, condensation heat transfer, anti-fouling, de/anti-icing, and self-cleaning. In particular, perfluorinated lubricants infused in fluorocarbon-coated porous structures have showed exceptional performances with durability; however, they caused several issues in safety, due to their difficulty in degradation and bio-accumulation. Here, we introduce a new approach to create the multifunctional lubricant-impregnated surface with edible oils and fatty acid, which are also safe to human body and degradable in nature. The edible oil-impregnated anodized nanoporous stainless steel surface shows a significantly low contact angle hysteresis and sliding angle, which is similar with general surface of fluorocarbon lubricant-infused systems. The edible oil impregnated in the hydrophobic nanoporous oxide surface also inhibits the direct contact of external aqueous solution to a solid surface structure. Due to such de-wetting property caused by a lubricating effect of edible oils, the edible oil-impregnated stainless steel surface shows enhanced corrosion resistance, anti-biofouling and condensation heat transfer with reduced ice adhesion.

Nanomechanical probing of bacterial adhesion to biodegradable Zn alloys

Bacterial infections on implants cause an inflammatory response and even implant failure. Bacterial adhesion is an initial and critical step during implant infection. The prevention of bacterial adhesion to implant materials has attracted much attention, especially for biodegradable metals. A deep understanding of the mechanisms of bacterial adhesion to biodegradable metals is urgently needed. In this work, a bacterial probe based on atomic force spectroscopy was employed to determine the bacterial adhesion to Zn alloy, which depended on surface charge, roughness, and wettability. Negative surface charges of Zn, Zn-0.5Li, and 316L generated electrostatic repulsion force towards bacteria. The surface roughness of Zn-0.5Li was significantly increased by localized corrosion. Bacterial adhesion forces on Zn, Zn-0.5Li, and 316L were 325.2 pN, 519.1 pN, and 727.7 pN, respectively. The density of attached bacteria (early-stage bacterial adhesion) on these samples exhibited a positive correlation with the bacterial adhesion force. The bacterial adhesion force and adhesion work provide a quantitative determination of the interactions between bacteria and biodegradable alloys. These results provide a deeper understanding of early bacterial adhesion on Zn alloys, which can further guide the antibacterial surface design of biodegradable materials for clinical application.

Control of the Nanopore Architecture of Anodic Alumina via Stepwise Anodization with Voltage Modulation and Pore Widening

Control of the morphology and hierarchy of the nanopore structures of anodic alumina is investigated by employing stepwise anodizing processes, alternating the two different anodizing modes, including mild anodization (MA) and hard anodization (HA), which are further mediated by a pore-widening (PW) step in between. For the experiment, the MA and HA are applied at the anodizing voltages of 40 and 100 V, respectively, in 0.3 M oxalic acid, at 1 °C, for fixed durations (30 min for MA and 0.5 min for HA), while the intermediate PW is applied in 0.1 M phosphoric acid at 30 °C for different durations. In particular, to examine the effects of the anodizing sequence and the PW time on the morphology and hierarchy of the nanopore structures formed, the stepwise anodization is conducted in two different ways: one with no PW step, such as MA→HA and HA→MA, and the other with the timed PW in between, such as MA→PW→MA, MA→PW→HA, HA→PW→HA, and HA→PW→MA. The results show that both the sequence of the voltage-modulated anodizing modes and the application of the intermediate PW step led to unique three-dimensional morphology and hierarchy of the nanopore structures of the anodic alumina beyond the conventional two-dimensional cylindrical pore geometry. It suggests that the stepwise anodizing process regulated by the sequence of the anodizing modes and the intermediate PW step can allow the design and fabrication of various types of nanopore structures, which can broaden the applications of the nanoporous anodic alumina with greater efficacy and versatility.

Computational Design of Antimicrobial Active Surfaces via Automated Bayesian Optimization

Biofilms pose significant problems for engineers in diverse fields, such as marine science, bioenergy, and biomedicine, where effective biofilm control is a long-term goal. The adhesion and surface mechanics of biofilms play crucial roles in generating and removing biofilm. Designing customized nanosurfaces with different surface topologies can alter the adhesive properties to remove biofilms more easily and greatly improve long-term biofilm control. To rapidly design such topologies, we employ individual-based modeling and Bayesian optimization to automate the design process and generate different active surfaces for effective biofilm removal. Our framework successfully generated optimized functional nanosurfaces for improved biofilm removal through applied shear and vibration. Densely distributed short pillar topography is the optimal geometry to prevent biofilm formation. Under fluidic shearing, the optimal topography is to sparsely distribute tall, slim, pillar-like structures. When subjected to either vertical or lateral vibrations, thick trapezoidal cones are found to be optimal. Optimizing the vibrational loading indicates a small vibration magnitude with relatively low frequencies is more efficient in removing biofilm. Our results provide insights into various engineering fields that require surface-mediated biofilm control. Our framework can also be applied to more general materials design and optimization.

A Review on Low-Dimensional Nanomaterials: Nanofabrication, Characterization and Applications

The development of modern cutting-edge technology relies heavily on the huge success and advancement of nanotechnology, in which nanomaterials and nanostructures provide the indispensable material cornerstone. Owing to their nanoscale dimensions with possible quantum limit, nanomaterials and nanostructures possess a high surface-to-volume ratio, rich surface/interface effects, and distinct physical and chemical properties compared with their bulk counterparts, leading to the remarkably expanded horizons of their applications. Depending on their degree of spatial quantization, low-dimensional nanomaterials are generally categorized into nanoparticles (0D); nanorods, nanowires, and nanobelts (1D); and atomically thin layered materials (2D). This review article provides a comprehensive guide to low-dimensional nanomaterials and nanostructures. It begins with the classification of nanomaterials, followed by an inclusive account of nanofabrication and characterization. Both top-down and bottom-up fabrication approaches are discussed in detail. Next, various significant applications of low-dimensional nanomaterials are discussed, such as photonics, sensors, catalysis, energy storage, diverse coatings, and various bioapplications. This article would serve as a quick and facile guide for scientists and engineers working in the field of nanotechnology and nanomaterials.

Anticorrosion Superhydrophobic Surfaces on AA6082 Aluminum Alloy by HF/HCl Texturing and Self-Assembling of Silane Monolayer

In this paper, the tailoring of superhydrophobic surfaces on AA6082 aluminum alloy by chemical etching in an HF/HCl solution, followed by silane self-assembling, was applied for enhanced corrosion protection in the marine field. In particular, different etching times were considered in order to optimize the treatment effect. The results indicate that all the prepared surfaces, after silanization, were characterized by superhydrophobic behavior with a contact angle higher than 150°. The contact and sliding angles strongly depend on the surface morphology at varying etching times. The optimum was observed with an etching time of 20 s, where a microscale coral-like structure coupled with a homogeneous and ordered pixel-like nanostructure was obtained on the aluminum surface showing a Cassie-Baxter superhydrophobic behavior with a water contact angle of 180° and a sliding angle equal to 0°. All superhydrophobic surfaces achieved an enhanced corrosion protection efficiency and impedance modulus up to two orders of magnitude higher than the as-received AA6082 in simulated seawater.

Antibacterial Adhesion Strategy for Dental Titanium Implant Surfaces: From Mechanisms to Application

Dental implants are widely used to restore missing teeth because of their stability and comfort characteristics. Peri-implant infection may lead to implant failure and other profound consequences. It is believed that peri-implantitis is closely related to the formation of biofilms, which are difficult to remove once formed. Therefore, endowing titanium implants with anti-adhesion properties is an effective method to prevent peri-implant infection. Moreover, anti-adhesion strategies for titanium implant surfaces are critical steps for resisting bacterial adherence. This article reviews the process of bacterial adhesion, the material properties that may affect the process, and the anti-adhesion strategies that have been proven effective and promising in practice. This article intends to be a reference for further improvement of the antibacterial adhesion strategy in clinical application and for related research on titanium implant surfaces.

Combining Topography and Chemistry to Produce Antibiofouling Surfaces: A Review

Despite decades of research on the reduction of surface fouling from biomolecules or micro-organisms, the ultimate antibiofouling surface remains undiscovered. The recent covid-19 pandemic strengthened the crucial need for such treatments. Among the numerous approaches that are able to provide surfaces with antibiofouling properties, chemical, biological, and topographical strategies have been implemented for instance in the marine, medical, or food industries. However, many of these methods have a biocidal effect and, with antibioresistance and biocide resistance a growing threat on humanity, strategies based on reducing adsorption of biomolecules and micro-organism are necessary for long-term solutions. Bioinspired strategies, combining both surface chemistry and topography, are currently at the heart of the best innovative and sustainable solutions. The synergistic effect of micro/nanostructuration, together with engineered chemical or biological functionalization is believed to contribute to the development of antibiofouling surfaces. This review aims to present approaches combining hydrophobic or hydrophilic chemistries with a specific topography to avoid biofouling in various industrial environments and healthcare facilities.

Bioselectivity of silk protein-based materials and their bio-inspired applications

Adhesion to material surfaces is crucial for almost all organisms regarding subsequent biological responses. Mammalian cell attachment to a surrounding biological matrix is essential for maintaining their survival and function concerning tissue formation. Conversely, the adhesion and presence of microbes interferes with important multicellular processes of tissue development. Therefore, tailoring bioselective, biologically active, and multifunctional materials for biomedical applications is a modern focus of biomaterial research. Engineering biomaterials that stimulate and interact with cell receptors to support binding and subsequent physiological responses of multicellular systems attracted much interest in the last years. Further to this, the increasing threat of multidrug resistance of pathogens against antibiotics to human health urgently requires new material concepts for preventing microbial infestation and biofilm formation. Thus, materials exhibiting microbial repellence or antimicrobial behaviour to reduce inflammation, while selectively enhancing regeneration in host tissues are of utmost interest. In this context, protein-based materials are interesting candidates due to their natural origin, biological activity, and structural properties. Silk materials, in particular those made of spider silk proteins and their recombinant counterparts, are characterized by extraordinary properties including excellent biocompatibility, slow biodegradation, low immunogenicity, and non-toxicity, making them ideally suited for tissue engineering and biomedical applications. Furthermore, recombinant production technologies allow for application-specific modification to develop adjustable, bioactive materials. The present review focusses on biological processes and surface interactions involved in the bioselective adhesion of mammalian cells and repellence of microbes on protein-based material surfaces. In addition, it highlights the importance of materials made of recombinant spider silk proteins, focussing on the progress regarding bioselectivity.

Self-Assembled, Hierarchical Structured Surfaces for Applications in (Super)hydrophobic Antiviral Coatings

A versatile method for the creation of multitier hierarchical structured surfaces is reported, which optimizes both antiviral and hydrophobic (easy-clean) properties. The methodology exploits the availability of surface-active chemical groups while also manipulating both the surface micro- and nanostructure to control the way the surface coating interacts with virus particles within a liquid droplet. This methodology has significant advantages over single-tier structured surfaces, including the ability to overcome the droplet-pinning effect and in delivering surfaces with high static contact angles (>130°) and good antiviral efficacy (log kill >2). In addition, the methodology highlights a valuable approach for the creation of mechanically robust, nanostructured surfaces which can be prepared by spray application using nonspecialized equipment.

On-Demand Fully Enclosed Superhydrophobic-Optofluidic Devices Enabled by Microstereolithography

Superhydrophobic surface-based optofluidics have been introduced to biosensors and unconventional optics with unique advantages, such as low light loss and power consumption. However, most of these platforms were made with planar-like microstructures and nanostructures, which may cause bonding issues and result in significant waveguide loss. Here, we introduce a fully enclosed superhydrophobic-based optofluidics system, enabled by a one-step microstereolithography procedure. Various microstructured cladding designs with a feature size down to 100 μm were studied and a "T-type" overhang design exhibits the lowest optical loss, regardless of the excitation wavelength. Surprisingly, the optical loss of superhydrophobic-based optofluidics is not solely decided by the solid area fraction at the solid/water/air interface, but also the cross-section shape and the effective cladding layer composition. We show that this fully enclosed optofluidic system can be used for CRISPR-labeled quantum dot quantification, intended for in vitro and in vivo CRISPR therapeutics.

Cuprous Oxide Nanoparticles Decorated Fabric Materials with Anti-biofilm Properties

Considering the global spread of bacterial infections, the development of anti-biofilm surfaces with high antimicrobial activities is highly desired. This work unraveled a simple, sonochemical method for coating Cu2O nanoparticles (NPs) on three different flexible substrates: polyester (PE), nylon 2 (N2), and polyethylene (PEL). The introduction of Cu2O NPs on these substrates enhanced their surface hydrophobicity, induced ROS generation, and completely inhibited the growth of sensitive (Escherichia coli and Staphyloccocus aureus) and drug-resistant (MDR E. coli and MRSA) planktonic and biofilm. The experimental results confirmed that Cu2O-PE exhibited complete biofilm mass reduction ability for all four strains, whereas Cu2O-N2 showed more than 99% biomass inhibition against both drug-resistant and sensitive pathogens in 6 h. Moreover, Cu2O-PEL also indicated a 99.95, 97.73, 98.00, and 99.20% biomass reduction of MRSA, MDR E. coli, E. coli, and S. aureus, respectively. All substrates were investigated for time-dependent inhibitions, and the associated biofilm mass and log reduction were evaluated. The mechanisms of Cu2O NP action against the mature biofilms include the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) as well as electrostatic interaction between Cu2O NPs and bacterial membranes. The current study could pave the way for the commercialization of sonochemically coated Cu2O NP flexible substrates for the prevention of microbial contamination in hospitals and industrial environments.

Shielding Surfaces from Viruses and Bacteria with a Multiscale Coating

The spread of viral and bacterial pathogens mediated by contact with surfaces is a leading cause of infection worldwide. COVID-19 and the continuous rise of deaths associated with antibiotic-resistant bacteria highlight the need to impede surface-mediated transmission. A sprayable coating with an intrinsic ability to resist the uptake of bacteria and viruses from surfaces and droplets, such as those generated by sneezing or coughing, is reported. The coating also provides an effective microbicidal functionality against bacteria, providing a dual barrier against pathogen uptake and transmission. This antimicrobial functionality is fully preserved following scratching and other induced damage to its surface or 9 days of submersion in a highly concentrated suspension of bacteria. The coatings also register an 11-fold decrease in viral contamination compared to the noncoated surfaces.

Fluid Flow Induces Differential Detachment of Live and Dead Bacterial Cells from Nanostructured Surfaces

Nanotopographic surfaces are proven to be successful in killing bacterial cells upon contact. This non-chemical bactericidal property has paved an alternative way of fighting bacterial colonization and associated problems, especially the issue of bacteria evolving resistance against antibiotic and antiseptic agents. Recent advancements in nanotopographic bactericidal surfaces have made them suitable for many applications in medical and industrial sectors. The bactericidal effect of nanotopographic surfaces is classically studied under static conditions, but the actual potential applications do have fluid flow in them. In this study, we have studied how fluid flow can affect the adherence of bacterial cells on nanotopographic surfaces. Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial species were tested under varying fluid flow rates for their retention and viability after flow exposure. The total number of adherent cells for both species was reduced in the presence of flow, but there was no flowrate dependency. There was a significant reduction in the number of live cells remaining on nanotopographic surfaces with an increasing flowrate for both species. Conversely, we observed a flowrate-independent increase in the number of adherent dead cells. Our results indicated that the presence of flow differentially affected the adherent live and dead bacterial cells on nanotopographic surfaces. This could be because dead bacterial cells were physically pierced by the nano-features, whereas live cells adhered via physiochemical interactions with the surface. Therefore, fluid shear was insufficient to overcome adhesion forces between the surface and dead cells. Furthermore, hydrodynamic forces due to the flow can cause more planktonic and detached live cells to collide with nano-features on the surface, causing more cells to lyse. These results show that nanotopographic surfaces do not have self-cleaning ability as opposed to natural bactericidal nanotopographic surfaces, and nanotopographic surfaces tend to perform better under flow conditions. These findings are highly useful for developing and optimizing nanotopographic surfaces for medical and industrial applications.

Recent Progress on Bioinspired Antibacterial Surfaces for Biomedical Application

Surface bacterial fouling has become an urgent global challenge that calls for resilient solutions. Despite the effectiveness in combating bacterial invasion, antibiotics are susceptible to causing microbial antibiotic resistance that threatens human health and compromises the medication efficacy. In nature, many organisms have evolved a myriad of surfaces with specific physicochemical properties to combat bacteria in diverse environments, providing important inspirations for implementing bioinspired approaches. This review highlights representative natural antibacterial surfaces and discusses their corresponding mechanisms, including repelling adherent bacteria through tailoring surface wettability and mechanically killing bacteria via engineering surface textures. Following this, we present the recent progress in bioinspired active and passive antibacterial strategies. Finally, the biomedical applications and the prospects of these antibacterial surfaces are discussed.

Protein-coated nanostructured surfaces affect the adhesion of Escherichia coli

Developing new implant surfaces with anti-adhesion bacterial properties used for medical devices remains a challenge. Here we describe a novel study investigating nanotopography influences on bacterial adhesion on surfaces with controlled interspatial nanopillar distances. The surfaces were coated with proteins (fibrinogen, collagen, serum and saliva) prior to E. coli-WT adhesion under flow conditions. PiFM provided chemical mapping and showed that proteins adsorbed both between and onto the nanopillars with a preference for areas between the nanopillars. E. coli-WT adhered least to protein-coated areas with low surface nanopillar coverage, most to surfaces coated with saliva, while human serum led to the lowest adhesion. Protein-coated nanostructured surfaces affected the adhesion of E. coli-WT.

Antimicrobial peptide GL13K immobilized onto SLA-treated titanium by silanization: antibacterial effect against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)

Infection is the main reason for implant failure, and the incidence of drug-resistant bacterial infection has increased in recent years. Further, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)-related implant infection has become a serious worldwide threat. New strategies, other than antibiotics, to tackle drug-resistance, are of high clinical significance. Antimicrobial peptides show clear superiority over conventional antibiotics in inhibiting drug-resistant bacteria. In the present study, we combined the antimicrobial peptide, GL13K, with sandblasting and acid-etching (SLA)-treated titanium using a silane coupling agent. Field emission scanning electron microscopy images showed the morphology of the coating. Attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results confirmed loading of GL13K, and the hydrophilicity of the SLA-GL13K coating was evaluated by water contact angle analysis. The releasing study of samples showed that the coating has a sustained releasing profile. SLA-GL13K coating exhibited strong contact- and release-killing abilities against MRSA, E. coli, and S. aureus. Meanwhile, Cell Counting Kit 8 analysis and examination of cell morphology demonstrated that the SLA-GL13K coating had good cytocompatibility at antibacterial concentrations. Overall, all these results suggest that SLA-GL13K coating can be successfully fabricated using silanization, and is a promising candidate for controlling MRSA-induced implant-related infection.

Effect of Local Topography on Cell Division of Staphylococcus spp

Surface engineering is a promising strategy to limit or prevent the formation of biofilms. The use of topographic cues to influence early stages of biofilm formationn has been explored, yet many fundamental questions remain unanswered. In this work, we develop a topological model supported by direct experimental evidence, which is able to explain the effect of local topography on the fate of bacterial micro-colonies of Staphylococcus spp. We demonstrate how topological memory at the single-cell level, characteristic of this genus of Gram-positive bacteria, can be exploited to influence the architecture of micro-colonies and the average number of surface anchoring points over nano-patterned surfaces, formed by vertically aligned silicon nanowire arrays that can be reliably produced on a commercial scale, providing an excellent platform to investigate the effect of topography on the early stages of Staphylococcus spp. colonisation. The surfaces are not intrinsically antimicrobial, yet they delivered a topography-based bacteriostatic effect and a significant disruption of the local morphology of micro-colonies at the surface. The insights from this work could open new avenues towards designed technologies for biofilm engineering and prevention, based on surface topography.

Effect of Flexibility and Size of Nanofabricated Topographies on the Mechanobactericidal Efficacy of Polymeric Surfaces

Driven by the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance, the design of intrinsically bactericidal surfaces has been gaining significant attention. Proposed surface topography designs are often inspired by naturally occurring nanopatterns on insect wings that mechanically damage bacteria via membrane deformation. The stability of and the absence of chemicals in such surfaces support their facile and sustainable employment in avoiding surface-born pathogen transmission. Recently, the deflection of controllably nanofabricated pillar arrays has been shown to strongly affect bactericidal activity, with the limits of mechanical effectiveness of such structures remaining largely unexplored. Here, we examine the limits of softer, commonly used polymeric materials and investigate the interplay between pillar nanostructure sizing and flexibility for effective antibacterial functionality. A facile, scalable, UV nanoimprint lithography method was used to fabricate nanopillar array topographies of variable sizes and flexibilities. It was found that bacterial death on nanopillars in the range of diameters ≤100 nm and Young's moduli ≥1.3 GPa is increased by 3.5- to 5.6-fold, while thicker or softer pillars did not reduce bacterial viability. To further support our findings, we performed a finite element analysis of pillar deformation. It revealed that differences in the amount of stress exerted on bacterial membranes, generated from the stored elastic energy in flexible pillars, contribute to the observed bactericidal performance.

Recent Progress in the Fabrication and Optical Properties of Nanoporous Anodic Alumina

The fabrication of a thick oxide layer onto an aluminum surface via anodization has been a subject of intense research activity for more than a century, largely due to protective and decorative applications. The capability to create well-defined pores via a cost-effective electrochemical oxidation technique onto the surface has made a major renaissance in the field, as the porous surfaces exhibit remarkably different properties compared to a bulk oxide layer. Amongst the various nanoporous structures being investigated, nanoporous anodic alumina (NAA) with well-organized and highly ordered hexagonal honeycomb-like pores has emerged as the most popular nanomaterial due to its wide range of applications, ranging from corrosion resistance to bacterial repelling surfaces. As compared to conventional nanostructure fabrication, the electrochemical anodization route of NAA with well-controlled pore parameters offers an economical route for fabricating nanoscale materials. The review comprehensively reflects the progress made in the fabrication route of NAA to obtain the material with desired pore properties, with a special emphasis on self-organization and pore growth kinetics. Detailed accounts of the various conditions that can play an important role in pore growth kinetics and pore parameters are presented. Further, recent developments in the field of controlling optical properties of NAA are discussed. A critical outlook on the future trends of the fabrication of NAA and its optical properties on the emerging nanomaterials, sensors, and devices are also outlined.

Recent Advances in Metal-Based Antimicrobial Coatings for High-Touch Surfaces

International interest in metal-based antimicrobial coatings to control the spread of bacteria, fungi, and viruses via high contact human touch surfaces are growing at an exponential rate. This interest recently reached an all-time high with the outbreak of the deadly COVID-19 disease, which has already claimed the lives of more than 5 million people worldwide. This global pandemic has highlighted the major role that antimicrobial coatings can play in controlling the spread of deadly viruses such as SARS-CoV-2 and scientists and engineers are now working harder than ever to develop the next generation of antimicrobial materials. This article begins with a review of three discrete microorganism-killing phenomena of contact-killing surfaces, nanoprotrusions, and superhydrophobic surfaces. The antimicrobial properties of metals such as copper (Cu), silver (Ag), and zinc (Zn) are reviewed along with the effects of combining them with titanium dioxide (TiO₂) to create a binary or ternary contact-killing surface coatings. The self-cleaning and bacterial resistance of purely structural superhydrophobic surfaces and the potential of physical surface nanoprotrusions to damage microbial cells are then considered. The article then gives a detailed discussion on recent advances in attempting to combine these individual phenomena to create super-antimicrobial metal-based coatings with binary or ternary killing potential against a broad range of microorganisms, including SARS-CoV-2, for high-touch surface applications such as hand rails, door plates, and water fittings on public transport and in healthcare, care home and leisure settings as well as personal protective equipment commonly used in hospitals and in the current COVID-19 pandemic.

Approaches to inhibit biofilm formation applying natural and artificial silk-based materials

The discovery of penicillin started a new era of health care since it allowed the effective treatment of formerly deadly infections. As a drawback, its overuse led to a growing number of multi-drug resistant pathogens. Challenging this arising threat, material research focuses on the development of microbe-killing or microbe repellent agents implementing such functions directly into materials. Due to their biocompatibility, non-immunogenicity and mechanical strength, silk-based materials are attractive candidates for applications in the biomedical field. Furthermore, it has been observed that silks display high persistency in their natural environment giving reason to suspect that they might be attractive candidates to prevent microbial infestation. The current review describes the process of biofilm formation on medical devices and the most common strategies to prevent it, divided into effects of surface topography, material modification and integrated additives. In this context, recent state of the art developments in the field of natural and artificial silk-based materials with microbe-repellant or antimicrobial properties are addressed. These silk properties are controversially discussed and conclusions are drawn as to which parameters will be decisive for the successful design of new bio-functional materials based on the blueprint of silk proteins.

Rapid antibacterial activity of anodized aluminum-based materials impregnated with quaternary ammonium compounds for high-touch surfaces to limit transmission of pathogenic bacteria

Infections caused by multidrug-resistant bacteria are a major public health problem. Their transmission is strongly linked to cross contamination via inert surfaces, which can serve as reservoirs for pathogenic microorganisms. To address this problem, antibacterial materials applied to high-touch surfaces have been developed. However, reaching a rapid and lasting effectiveness under real life conditions of use remains challenging. In the present paper, hard-anodized aluminum (AA) materials impregnated with antibacterial agents (quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) and/or nitrate silver (AgNO₃)) were prepared and characterized. The thickness of the anodized layer was about 50 μm with pore diameter of 70 nm. AA with QACs and/or AgNO₃ had a water contact angle varying between 45 and 70°. The antibacterial activity of the materials was determined under different experimental settings to better mimic their use, and included liquid, humid, and dry conditions. AA-QAC surfaces demonstrated excellent efficiency, killing >99.9% of bacteria in 5 min on a wide range of Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus, Clostridioides difficile, vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium) and Gram-negative (streptomycin-resistant Salmonella typhimurium and encapsulated Klebsiella pneumoniae) pathogens. AA-QACs showed a faster antibacterial activity (from 0.25 to 5 min) compared with antibacterial copper used as a reference (from 15 min to more than 1 h). We show that to maintain their high performance, AA-QACs should be used in low humidity environments and should be cleaned with solutions composed of QACs. Altogether, AA-QAC materials constitute promising candidates to prevent the transmission of pathogenic bacteria on high-touch surfaces.

Design of Lubricant-Infused Surfaces Based on Mussel-Inspired Nanosilica Coatings: Solving Adhesion by Pre-Adhesion

Slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPSs) have attracted wide interest with regard to their excellent liquid repellency properties and broad applications in various fields associated with anti-adhesion. However, the preparation processes depending on the chemical properties of the substrate and the poor stability of the lubricant layer hinder the practical applications. In this work, a facile method to fabricate SLIPSs based on the mussel-inspired polydopamine (PDA)-mediated nanosilica structures is demonstrated. A variety of substrates can be decorated with SLIPSs by successive treatment of PDA-assisted sol-gel process, fluorination, and lubricant filling. The robust uniform and nanotextured silica coating, mediated by the pre-adhered PDA layer, shows enhanced lubricant-locking ability even when subjected to increased evaporation and high shear from flowing water or spinning compared with hierarchical silica rough structures. The obtained SLIPSs exhibit high transparency and excellent resistance against adhesion of liquid/solid contaminants and biofoulings through this pre-adhesion of PDA strategy. The well-defined nanosilica coating of high decoration covering micron-scaled pore walls enables improved durability of the slippery surfaces for antifouling of the porous membrane under pressure-driven filtration and this may be employed as a potential candidate for fouling resistance of porous materials.

Tuning of Electrode Surface for Enhanced Bacterial Adhesion and Reactions: A Review on Recent Approaches

The study of bacterial adhesion and its consequences has great significance in different fields such as marine science, renewable energy sectors, soil and plant ecology, food industry, and the biomedical field. Generally, the adverse effects of microbial surface interactions have attained wide visibility. However, herein, we present distinct approaches to highlight the beneficial aspects of microbial surface interactions for various applications rather than deal with the conventional negative aspects or prevention strategies. The surface microbial reactions can be tuned for useful biochemical or bio-electrochemical applications, which are otherwise unattainable through conventional routes. In this context, the present review is a comprehensive approach to highlight the basic principles and signature parameters that are responsible for the useful microbial-electrode interactions. It also proposes various surface tuning strategies, which are useful for tuning the electrode characteristics particularly suitable for the enhanced bacterial adhesion and reactions. The tuning of surface characteristics of electrodes is discussed with a special reference to the Microbial Fuel Cell as an example.

Fluorine-Free Superhydrophobic Coating with Antibiofilm Properties Based on Pickering Emulsion Templating

This study presents antibiofilm coating formulations based on Pickering emulsion templating. The coating contains no bioactive material because its antibiofilm properties stem from passive mechanisms that derive solely from the superhydrophobic nature of the coating. Moreover, unlike most of the superhydrophobic formulations, our system is fluorine-free, thus making the method eminently suitable for food and medical applications. The coating formulation is based on water in toluene or xylene emulsions that are stabilized using commercial hydrophobic silica, with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) dissolved in toluene or xylene. The structure of the emulsions and their stability was characterized by confocal microscopy and cryogenic-scanning electron microscopy (cryo-SEM). The most stable emulsions are applied on polypropylene (PP) surfaces and dried in an oven to form PDMS/silica coatings in a process called emulsion templating. The structure of the resulting coatings was investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and SEM. The surface of the coatings shows a honeycomb-like structure that exhibits a combination of micron-scale and nanoscale roughness, which endows it with its superhydrophobic properties. After tuning, the superhydrophobic properties of the coatings demonstrated highly efficient passive antibiofilm activity. In vitro antibiofilm trials with E. coli indicate that the coatings reduced the biofilm accumulation by 83% in the xylene-water-based surfaces and by 59% in the case of toluene-water-based surfaces.

Nanostructured Surfaces to Promote Osteoblast Proliferation and Minimize Bacterial Adhesion on Titanium

The objective of this study was to investigate the potential of titanium nanotubes to promote the proliferation of human osteoblasts and to reduce monomicrobial biofilm adhesion. A secondary objective was to determine the effect of silicon carbide (SiC) on these nanostructured surfaces. Anodized titanium sheets with 100-150 nm nanotubes were either coated or not coated with SiC. After 24 h of osteoblast cultivation on the samples, cells were observed on all titanium sheets by SEM. In addition, the cytotoxicity was evaluated by CellTiter-BlueCell assay after 1, 3, and 7 days. The samples were also cultivated in culture medium with microorganisms incubated anaerobically with respective predominant periodontal bacteria viz. Porphyromonas gingivalis, Treponema denticola, and Tannerella forsythia as monoinfection at 37 °C for 30 days. The biofilm adhesion and coverage were evaluated through surface observation using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The results demonstrate that Ti nanostructured surfaces induced more cell proliferation after seven days. All groups presented no cytotoxic effects on human osteoblasts. In addition, SEM images illustrate that Ti nanostructured surfaces exhibited lower biofilm coverage compared to the reference samples. These results indicate that Ti nanotubes promoted osteoblasts proliferation and induced cell proliferation on the surface, compared with the controls. Ti nanotubes also reduced biofilm adhesion on titanium implant surfaces.

Engineering biomaterials to prevent post-operative infection and fibrosis

Implantable biomaterials are essential surgical devices, extending and improving the quality of life of millions of people globally. Advances in materials science, manufacturing, and in our understanding of the biological response to medical device implantation over several decades have resulted in improved safety and functionality of biomaterials. However, post-operative infection and immune responses remain significant challenges that interfere with biomaterial functionality and host healing processes. The objectives of this review is to provide an overview of the biology of post-operative infection and the physiological response to implanted biomaterials and to discuss emerging strategies utilizing local drug delivery and surface modification to improve the long-term safety and efficacy of biomaterials.

Tuning surface topographies on biomaterials to control bacterial infection

Microbial contamination and subsequent formation of biofilms frequently cause failure of surgical implants and a good understanding of the bacteria-surface interactions is vital to the design and safety of biomaterials. In this review, the physical and chemical factors that are involved in the various stages of implant-associated bacterial infection are described. In particular, topographical modification strategies that have been employed to mitigate bacterial adhesion via topographical mechanisms are summarized and discussed comprehensively. Recent advances have improved our understanding about bacteria-surface interactions and have enabled biomedical engineers and researchers to develop better and more effective antibacterial surfaces. The related interdisciplinary efforts are expected to continue in the quest for next-generation medical devices to attain the ultimate goal of improved clinical outcomes and reduced number of revision surgeries.

Anti-Periprosthetic Infection Strategies: From Implant Surface Topographical Engineering to Smart Drug-Releasing Coatings

Despite advanced implant sterilization and aseptic surgical techniques, periprosthetic bacterial infection remains a major challenge for orthopedic and dental implants. Bacterial colonization/biofilm formation around implants and their invasion into the dense skeletal tissue matrices are difficult to treat and could lead to implant failure and osteomyelitis. These complications require major revision surgeries and extended antibiotic therapies that are associated with high treatment cost, morbidity, and even mortality. Effective preventative measures mitigating risks for implant-related infections are thus in dire need. This review focuses on recent developments of anti-periprosthetic infection strategies aimed at either reducing bacterial adhesion, colonization, and biofilm formation or killing bacteria directly in contact with and/or in the vicinity of implants. These goals are accomplished through antifouling, quorum-sensing interfering, or bactericidal implant surface topographical engineering or surface coatings through chemical modifications. Surface topographical engineering of lotus leaf mimicking super-hydrophobic antifouling features and cicada wing-mimicking, bacterium-piercing nanopillars are both presented. Conventional physical coating/passive release of bactericidal agents is contrasted with their covalent tethering to implant surfaces through either stable linkages or linkages labile to bacterial enzyme cleavage or environmental perturbations. Pros and cons of these emerging anti-periprosthetic infection approaches are discussed in terms of their safety, efficacy, and translational potentials.
