Abstract
Despite substantial progress in the diagnosis of jaundice/hyperbilirubinemia as the most common disease and cause of hospitalization of newborns, on the eve of Industry/Healthcare 5.0, the development of accurate and reliable wearable diagnostic sensors for noninvasive smart monitoring of bilirubin (BIL) is still in high demand. Aiming to fabricate a smart wearable sensor for early diagnosis of neonatal jaundice and its therapeutic monitoring, we here report a fluorescent dermal nanotattoo that further coupled with an IoT-integrated wearable optoelectronic reader for minimally invasive, continuous, and real-time monitoring of BIL in interstitial fluid. Selective recovery of quenched fluorescence of the dermal tattoo sensor, composed of biocompatible dissolving/hydrogel microneedles loaded with fluorescent carbon quantum dots, upon blue light exposure used for jaundice phototherapy was utilized for highly selective BIL sensing. The fascinating features of our developed smart wearable tattoo sensor and its successful results with high correlation with blood BIL results make it a highly promising sensor for easy, minimally invasive, reliable, and smart eDiagnostics and continuous therapeutic eMonitoring of jaundice and other BIL-induced diseases at the point of care. We envision that the developed nanotattoo sensing bioplatform will inspire the development of future smart tattoo sensors in various diagnostic and monitoring scenarios.

Abstract
Flexible electrochemical sensors can adhere to any bendable surface with conformal contact, enabling continuous data monitoring without compromising the surface's dynamics. Among various materials that have been explored for flexible electronics, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) exhibit dynamic responses to physical and chemical signals, offering new opportunities for flexible electrochemical sensing technologies. This review aims to explore the role of electrocatalysis in MOF films specifically designed for flexible electrochemical sensing applications, with a focus on their design, fabrication techniques, and applications. We systematically categorize the design and fabrication techniques used in preparing MOF films, including in situ growth, layer-by-layer assembly, and polymer-assisted strategies. The implications of MOF-based flexible electrochemical sensors are examined in the context of wearable devices, environmental monitoring, and healthcare diagnostics. Future research is anticipated to shift from traditional microcrystalline powder synthesis to MOF thin-film deposition, which is expected to not only enhance the performance of MOFs in flexible electronics but also improve sensing efficiency and reliability, paving the way for more robust and versatile sensor technologies.

Abstract
The functionalization of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with organic small molecules by in situ postsynthetic modification has garnered considerable attention. However, the precise engineering of recognition sites using this method remains rarely explored in optically controlled bioelectronics. Herein, employing the Schiff base reaction to embed the small molecule (THBA) into a Zr-MOF, we fabricated a hydroxyl-rich MOF on the surface of titanium dioxide nanorod arrays (U6H@TiO2 NRs) to develop light-sensitive gate electrodes with tailored recognition capabilities. The U6H@TiO2 NR gate electrodes were integrated into organic photoelectrochemical transistor (OPECT) sensing systems to tailor a sensitive device for bilirubin (I-Bil) detection. In the presence of I-Bil, coordination effects, hydrogen bonding, and π-π interactions facilitated strong binding between U6H@TiO2 NRs and the target I-Bil. The electron-donating property of I-Bil influenced the gate voltage, enabling precise control of the channel status and modulation of the channel current. The OPECT device exhibited exceptional analytical performance toward I-Bil with wide linearity ranging from 1 × 10-16 to 1 × 10-9 M and a low limit detection of 0.022 fM. Leveraging the versatility of small molecules for boosting the functionalization of materials, this work demonstrates the great potential of the small molecule family for OPECT bioanalysis and holds promise for the advancement of OPECT sensors.

Abstract
Recovering silver from wastewater not only significantly reduces environmental harm but also meets the growing demand for silver in modern industry. Here, a novel metal-organic framework adsorbent (MOF-RD) using rhodanine derivatives as linkers is introduced for the efficient and selective capture of silver ions in real wastewater. The adsorption of MOF-RD followed pseudo-second-order and Sips models, and thermodynamic investigations revealed the process to be endothermic. MOF-RD demonstrated a remarkable adsorption capacity of 707.2 mg·g-1 for Ag(I) at pH 5 and 318 K. The interaction between silver ions and MOF-RD was mainly electrostatic attraction and coordination, with coordination primarily occurring at the CO and CS sites within the rhodanine motif. The practical applicability of MOF-RD for selective adsorption of Ag(I) was validated in actual wastewater with high-concentration competing metal ions. Furthermore, after 10 adsorption-desorption cycle experiments, MOF-RD still retained a strong regenerative capability. The results reveal the good potential of MOF-RD as an adsorbent for selectively recovering Ag(I) from industrial wastewater. Additionally, the strategies and methods adopted in this article also provide new perspectives and technical paths for the separation and recovery of other metal ions in wastewater.

Abstract
The escalating presence of microplastics (MPs) in wastewater necessitates the investigation of effective tertiary treatment process. Forward osmosis (FO) emerges as an effective non-pressurized membrane process, however, for the effective implementation of FO systems, the development of fouling-resistance FO membranes with high-performance is essential. This study focuses on the integration of MWCNT/UiO-66-NH2 as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) nanocomposites in thin film composite (TFC) FO membranes, harnessing the synergistic power of hybrid nanoparticles in FO membranes. The results showed that the addition of MWCNT/UiO-66-NH2 in the aqueous phase during polyamide formation changed the polyamide surface structure, and enhanced membranes' hydrophilicity by 44%. The water flux of the modified FO membrane incorporated with 0.1 wt% MWCNTs/UiO-66-NH2 increased by 67% and the reverse salt flux decreased by 22% as in comparison with the control membrane. Moreover, the modified membrane showed improved antifouling behavior against both organic foulant and MPs. The MWCNT/UiO-66-NH2 membrane experienced 35% flux decline while the control membrane experienced 65% flux decline. This proves that the integration of MWCNT/UiO-66-NH2 nanoparticles into TFC FO membranes is a viable approach in creating advanced FO membranes with high antifouling propensity with potential to be expanded further to other membrane applications.

Abstract
Food prone to spoilage has a huge food safety hazard, threatening people's health, so early detection of food spoilage is a continuous and urgent need. Herein, we developed a dual-mode response sensor, alizarin complexone@UiO-66-NH2, which can accurately detect pH. The sensor demonstrated significant changes in color from pale yellow to deep pink, while the fluorescence shifted from light blue to blue violet. Moreover, both UV absorption and fluorescence intensity showed a linear correlation with pH raging from 4.5 to 7.5. These results indicate that the sensor effectively responds to pH, making it suitable for detecting the freshness of perishable food. To put this into practice, we integrated the sensor with cellulose-based filter paper to determine the freshness of shrimp and beef, which was proved to be effective in assessing freshness. In the future, it can be combined with intelligent colorimetric and fluorescence instruments to achieve visual detection.

Abstract
Even though significant advances have been made, there is still a lack of reliable sensors capable of noninvasively monitoring bilirubin and diagnosing jaundice as the most common neonatal disease, particularly at the point-of-care (POC) where blood sampling from infants is accompanied by serious challenges and concerns. Herein, for the first time, using an easy-to-fabricate/use assay, we demonstrate the capability of curcumin embedded within paper for noninvasive optical monitoring of bilirubin in saliva. The highly selective sensing of the developed sensor toward bilirubin is attributed to bilirubin photoisomerization under blue light exposure, which can selectively restore the bilirubin-induced quenched fluorescence of curcumin. We also fabricated an IoT-enabled hand-held optoelectronic reader to measure and quantify the fluorescence and color signals of our sensor. Clinical analysis on the saliva of 18 jaundiced infants by using our developed smart salivary sensor proved that it is amenable to be widely exploited in POC applications for bilirubin monitoring as there are good correlations between its results with those of reference methods in saliva and blood. Meeting all WHO's REASSURED criteria by our developed sensor makes it a highly promising sensor for smart noninvasive diagnosis and therapeutic monitoring of jaundice, hepatitis, and other bilirubin-induced neurologic diseases at the POC.

Abstract
Kidney diseases are important diseases that affect human health worldwide. According to the 2020 World Health Organization (WHO) report, kidney diseases have become the top 10 causes of death. Strengthening the prevention, primary diagnosis, and action of kidney-related diseases is of great significance in maintaining human health and improving the quality of life. It is increasingly challenging to address clinical needs with the present technologies for diagnosing and treating renal illness. Fortunately, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have shown great promise in the diagnosis and treatment of kidney diseases. This review summarizes the research progress of MOFs in the diagnosis and treatment of renal disease in recent years. Firstly, we introduce the basic structure and properties of MOFs. Secondly, we focus on the utilization of MOFs in the diagnosis and treatment of kidney diseases. In the diagnosis of kidney disease, MOFs are usually designed as biosensors to detect biomarkers related to kidney disease. In the treatment of kidney disease, MOFs can not only be used as an effective adsorbent for uremic toxins during hemodialysis but also as a precise treatment of intelligent drug delivery carriers. They can also be combined with nano-chelation technology to solve the problem of the imbalance of trace elements in kidney disease. Finally, we describe the current challenges and prospects of MOFs in the diagnosis and treatment of kidney diseases.

Abstract
As a noble metal with extremely high economic benefits, the recovery of silver ions has attracted a particular deal of attention. However, it is a challenge to recover silver ions efficiently and selectively from aqueous solutions. In this research, the novel metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) adsorbent (Zr-DPHT) is prepared for the highly efficient and selective recovery of silver ions from wastewater. Experimental findings reveal that Zr-DPHT's adsorption of Ag(I) constitutes an endothermic process, with an optimal pH of 5 and exhibits a maximum adsorption capacity of 268.3 mg·g-1. Isotherm studies show that the adsorption of Ag(I) by Zr-DPHT is mainly monolayer chemical adsorption. Kinetic studies indicate that the internal diffusion of Ag(I) in Zr-DPHT may be the rate-limiting step. The mechanism for Ag(I) adsorption on Zr-DPHT involves electrostatic interactions and chelation. In competitive adsorption, Ag(I) has the largest partition coefficient (9.64 mL·mg-1), indicating a strong interaction between Zr-DPHT and Ag(I). It is proven in the adsorption-desorption cycle experiments that Zr-DPHT has good regeneration performance. The research results indicate that Zr-DPHT can serve as a potential adsorbent for efficiently and selectively capturing Ag(I), providing a new direction for MOFs in the recycling field of precious metals.

Abstract
High levels of unconjugated bilirubin (UB) in serum lead to asymptomatic and neonatal jaundice and brain dysfunctions. Herein, we have reported the detection of UB at as low as 1 μM in an aqueous alkaline medium using a Zn(II) complex. The specificity of the complex has been validated by the HPLC in the concentration window 6-90 μM, which is rare. The sensory response of the probe at physiological pH against nitro explosives developed it as an instant-acting fluorosensor for picric acid (PA) and 2,4-dinitrophenol (2,4-DNP). Spectroscopic titration provided a binding constant of 4×105 M-1 with PA. The naked eye detection was found to be 15 μM. The solid-state photoluminescent nature of the complex enabled it for PA sensing in the solid phase. Interestingly, the probe remained fluorescent in various volatile and non-volatile organic solvents. As a result, it can also detect PA and 2,4-DNP in a wide range of common organic media. NMR studies revealed the coordination of PA, 2,4-DNP, and UB to the Zn(II) center of the probe, which is responsible for the observed quenching of the probe with the analytes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Prognosis, diagnosis, and treatment of several diseases strongly rely on the sensitive, selective, and accurate determination of specific biomarkers in relevant biological samples. Free biliverdin and free bilirubin represent important new biomarkers of oxidative stress, however, the lack of suitable analytical methods for their determination has hindered progress in biomedical and clinical research. RESULTS Here, we introduce a first comprehensive approach for robust and simultaneous determination of these bilins in serum using liquid chromatography - mass spectrometry (LC-MS). The developed analytical method exhibits linearity for both analytes within the concentration range of 0.5-100 nM, with limits of detection and quantitation determined at 0.1 nM and 0.5 nM, respectively. Moreover, several analytical pitfalls related to the intrinsic molecular structures of free bilirubin and free biliverdin and their trace concentration levels in biological samples are discussed here in detail for the first time. We have shown that the solubility, chemical stability, and affinity of these bilins to various materials strongly depend on the solvent, pH, and addition of stabilizing and chelating agents. Finally, the validated LC-MS method was successfully applied to the analysis of both bilins in fetus bovine serums, yielding higher free bilirubin/biliverdin ratios compared with previously reported values for human serum. SIGNIFICANCE Failure to recognize and address the challenges presented here often leads to substantial analytical errors and consequently biased interpretation of the obtained results. This pertains not only to LC-MS, but also to many other analytical platforms due to the compound-derived sources of error.

Abstract
Ascorbic acid (AA) plays an important role in many life processes. The chronic nutritional deficiency of AA will lead to the symptoms of scurvy. Therefore, the sensitive quantitative detection of AA is most important in the pharmaceutical analysis, food industry and diagnostic application. In this study, a dual-functional magnetic metal-organic frameworks (Fe3O4@SiO2@UiO-PBA) nanoparticles was synthesized by modifying phenylboronic acid to the surface of magnetic UiO-66-NH2 via postsynthetic modification for selectively and sensitively florescent detection of AA. Due to the abundant amino groups and grafted phenylboronic acid, the proposed nanoparticles have the dual properties of hydrophilicity and boronate affinity. Under optimum conditions, the obtained Fe3O4@SiO2@UiO-PBA nanoparticles can detect AA within 30 s, and has a good linear relationship with the concentration of AA in the range of 5.0-60 μM with a detection limit of 2.5 μM (S/N = 3). In addition, the prepared Fe3O4@SiO2@UiO-PBA nanoparticles showed excellent selectivity and great potential application in the highly efficient determination of trace AA in vitamin C tablets. These results indicated that a convenient method was proposed to develop fluorescent probes for rapid and sensitive detection of trace AA in real samples.

Abstract
In this work, a novel fluorescence sensor UiO-66-PSM based on post-synthetic modified metal-organic frameworks was prepared for the detection of berberine hydrochloride (BBH) in the traditional Chinese herb Coptis. UiO-66-PSM was synthesized by a simple Schiff base reaction with UiO-66-NH2 and phthalaldehyde (PAD). The luminescence quenching can be attributed to the photo-induced electron transfer process from the ligand of UiO-66-PSM to BBH. The UiO-66-PSM sensor exhibited fast response time, low detection limit, and high selectivity to BBH. Moreover, the UiO-66-PSM sensor was successfully applied to the quantitative detection of BBH in the traditional Chinese herb Coptis, and the detection results obtained from the as-fabricated fluorescence sensing assay were consistent with those of high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), indicating that this work has potential applicability for the detection of BBH in traditional Chinese herbs.

Abstract
Excessive accumulation of bilirubin in patients with hyperbilirubinemia can lead to tissue and organ damage and neurological diseases, and is even life-threatening in severe cases. Hemoperfusion is an effective method for removing bilirubin, but clinically used hemoperfusion adsorbents have unsatisfactory adsorption capacity and kinetics. In order to obtain a safe and efficient bilirubin adsorbent, Zr-based Metal-Organic Framework (MOF) material UiO-66 with high specific surface area and aqueous medium stability was prepared and modified with varying degrees of amination to improve its adsorption capacity. According to adsorption experiments in aqueous solution and simulated plasma, it was confirmed that the unsaturated coordinated zirconium in UiO-66 can effectively induce the aggregation and precipitation of free bilirubin unbound to albumin and the amino group on UiO-66-NH2 has a strong affinity for albumin bound bilirubin. The adsorption effect of UiO-66-NH2 with a high degree of amino modification is significantly stronger than that of UiO-66-NH2 with a low degree of modification. In simulated plasma with a bilirubin concentration of 40 mg dL-1, the adsorption capacities of UiO-66 and UiO-66-NH2-1.9 can reach 69.08 mg g-1 and 81.13 mg g-1. The adsorption isotherm fitting and adsorption kinetics fitting results also show that UiO-66 and UiO-66-NH2 are good adsorbents for bilirubin. In dynamic adsorption, the adsorbents also showed good performance and did not affect the protein in the plasma. The hemolysis test, coagulation time test, and cytotoxicity test confirmed that the bilirubin adsorbents based on UiO-66 and UiO-66-NH2 have good blood compatibility and biocompatibility. This study provides new ideas for the development of a novel bilirubin adsorbent and a theoretical basis for the study of bilirubin adsorption mechanisms.

Abstract
UiO-66-NH2 -IM, a fluorescent metal-organic framework (MOF), was synthesized by post-synthetic modification of UiO-66-NH2 with 2-imidazole carboxaldehyde via a Schiff base reaction. It was examined using various characterization techniques (PXRD, FTIR, NMR, SEM, TGA, UV-Vis DRS, and photoluminescence spectroscopy). The emissive feature of UiO-66-NH2 -IM was utilized to detect volatile organic compounds (VOCs), metal ions, and anions, such as acetone, Fe3+ , and carbonate (CO3 2- ). Acetone turns off the high luminescence of UiO-66-NH2 -IM in DMSO, with the limit of detection (LOD) being 3.6 ppm. Similarly, Fe3+ in an aqueous medium is detected at LOD=0.67 μM (0.04 ppm) via quenching. On the contrary, CO3 2- in an aqueous medium significantly enhances the luminescence of UiO-66-NH2 -IM, which is detected with extremely high sensitivity (LOD=1.16 μM, i. e., 0.07 ppm). Large Stern-Volmer constant, Ksv , and low LOD values indicate excellent sensitivity of the post-synthetic MOF. Experimental data supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations discern photo-induced electron transfer (PET), resonance energy transfer (RET), inner filter effect (IFE), or proton abstraction as putative sensing mechanisms. NMR and computational studies propose a proton abstraction mechanism for luminescence enhancement with CO3 2- . Moreover, the optical behavior of the post-synthetic material toward analytes is recyclable.

Abstract
Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a toxic gas derived from the sulfur industry and trace H2S in the environment can cause serious ecological damage while inhalation can cause serious damage and lead to disease. Therefore, the real-time and accurate detection of trace sulfur ions is of great significance for environmental protection and early disease detection. Considering the shortcoming of current H2S probes in terms of stability and sensitivity, the development of novel probes is necessary. Herein, a novel metal-organic frameworks (MOF)-based material, UiO-66-NH2@BDC, was designed and prepared for the visual detection of H2S with rapid response (< 6 s) and low detection limit of S2- (0.13 µM) by hydrogen bonding. Based on its good optical performance, the UiO-66-NH2@BDC probe can detect S2- in various water environments. More importantly, UiO-66-NH2@BDC probe realize imaging S2- in cells and live zebrafish.

Abstract
Sensitive and selective detection of biomarkers is crucial in the study and early diagnosis of diseases. With the continuous development of biosensing technologies, fluorescent biosensors based on metal-organic frameworks have attracted increasing attention in the field of biomarker detection due to the combination of the advantages of MOFs, such as high specific surface area, large porosity, and structure with tunable functionality and the technical simplicity, sensitivity and efficiency and good applicability of fluorescent detection techniques. Therefore, researchers must understand the fluorescence response mechanism of such fluorescent biosensors and their specific applications in this field. Of all biomarkers applicable to such sensors, the chemical essence of nucleic acids, proteins, amino acids, dopamine, and other small molecules account for about a quarter of the total number of studies. This review systematically elaborates on four fluorescence response mechanisms: metal-centered emission (MC), ligand-centered emission (LC), charge transfer (CT), and guest-induced luminescence change (GI), presenting their applications in the detection of nucleic acids, proteins, amino acids, dopamine, and other small molecule biomarkers. In addition, the current challenges of MOFs-based fluorescent biosensors are also discussed, and their further development prospects are concerned.

Abstract
The determination of blood concentration of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) is highly desired in clinical practice. In this work, three amino bearing metal-organic frameworks (amino-MOFs) coated cotton fibers were prepared using a facile cysteine-triggered in situ growth strategy and proposed as in-tip solid-phase microextraction (in-SPME) adsorbents for efficient extraction of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs from human plasma. The self-made adsorbents exhibited satisfactory extraction performance toward three NSAIDs including diclofenac sodium, ketoprofen and flurbiprofen. Under the optimized conditions, the established method exhibited satisfactory enrichment performance, low limits of detection and excellent extraction efficiency. Good reproducibility, wide linear range, excellent linearity and satisfactory sensitivity were obtained in the experiment. The method was also used for the enrichment and determination of NSAIDs in human plasma samples. Good recoveries were obtained, ranging from 66.5% to 98.9% with relative standard deviations less than 6.62%. The good performance of amino-MOFs was due to the synergistic effects arising from grafted charged amino groups within ordered pores of suitable size, leading to strong affinity towards guest molecules. Electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bond and π-π interaction played a vital role in the extraction of NSAIDs. This report indicated the potential of amino-MOFs as efficient adsorbents for the determination of NSAIDs from human plasma.

Abstract
Here, we reported a ratiometric fluorescence strategy for the detection of phosphate (Pi) in artificial wetland water. The strategy was based on dual-ligand two-dimensional terbium-organic frameworks nanosheets (2D Tb-NB MOFs). 2D Tb-NB MOFs were prepared through blending 5-boronoisophthalic acid (5-bop), 2-aminoterephthalic acid (NH2-BDC) and Tb3+ ions at room temperature in the presence of triethylamine (TEA). The dual-ligand strategy realized dual emission originated from ligand NH2-BDC and Tb3+ ions at 424 and 544 nm, respectively. Pi could compete with ligands to coordinate Tb3+ due to the strong binding ability between Pi and Tb3+, resulting in structural destruction of 2D Tb-NB MOFs, so static quenching and antenna effect between ligands and metal ions were interrupted, and emission at 424 nm was enhanced and emission at 544 nm was weakened. This novel probe had excellent linearity with Pi concentrations from 1 to 50 μmol/L; the detection limit was 0.16 μmol/L. This work revealed that mixed ligands improved sensing efficiency of MOFs by enhancing the sensitivity of the coordination between the analyte and MOFs.

Abstract
The identification of residual thiram (Tr) in foods is vital in view of its harmful effects on human health. Herein, a ratiometric fluorescence sensor (I435/I590) based on rhodamine B/NH2-MIL-53(Al0.75Fe0.25) was constructed for the detection of Tr. Interestingly, the probe RhB/NH2-MIL-53(Bim) assisted by Cu2+ could rapidly and sensitively recognize Tr with a low detection limit of 0.11 μg/mL in 10 min. The fluorescence sensing mechanism was investigated using fluorescence spectra, UV-Vis absorption spectra, the fluorescence lifetime and quantum yield. The results showed that the excellent sensing performance was attributed to fluorescence resonance energy transfer, electrostatic interaction, and photoinduced electron transfer. In addition, the practical application of this platform showed acceptable relative recoveries for Tr (84.03-107.81 %), and precisions were also achieved (relative standard deviation ≤ 8.69 %, n = 3). These results show that the presented herein can be applied to monitor the Tr content in real fruit samples.

Abstract
Chiral metal organic frameworks (CMOFs) are a kind of crystal porous framework material that has attracted increasing attention due to the customizable combination of metal nodes and organic ligands. In particular, the highly ordered crystal structure and rich adjustable chiral structure make it a promising material for developing new chiral separation material systems. In this review, the progress of CMOFs and their different types of composites used as chiral stationary phases (CSPs) in liquid chromatography for enantioseparation are discussed. The characteristics of CMOFs and their composites are summarized, aiming to provide new ideas for the development of CMOFs with better performance and further promote the application of CMOFs materials in enantioselective high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).

Abstract
An exceptionally simple amide-imine conjugate, (E)-N'-(4-(diethylamino)-2-hydroxybenzylidene)-4-methylbenzohydrazide (L), derived by the condensation of 4-methyl-benzoic acid hydrazide (PTA) with 4-(diethylamino)-2-hydroxybenzaldehyde was utilized to prepare a dimeric oxo-vanadium (V1) and a one-dimensional (1D) copper(ii) coordination polymer (C1). The structures of L, V1 and C1 were confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The experimental results indicate that V1 is a promising green catalyst for the oxidation of sulfide, whereas C1 has potential for a C-S cross-coupling reaction in a greener way. Most importantly, C1 is an efficient 'turn-on' fluorescence sensor for bilirubin that functions via a ligand displacement approach. The displacement equilibrium constant is 7.78 × 105 M-1. The detection limit for bilirubin is 1.15 nM in aqueous chloroform (chloroform/water, 1/4, v/v, PBS buffer, and pH 8.0).

Abstract
Bright luminescence hybrid halide perovskite nanocrystals (PNCs) as a novel fluorophore class have not been broadly explored in biological sensing. Herein, we synthesized highly fluorescent CsPbBr3 PNCs through the LARP method using oleic acid and oleyl amine as capping ligands. Morphological and optical properties of as-synthesized PNCs were studied using transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, UV-vis, and emission spectroscopic analysis. Oleic acid- and oleyl amine-capped PNCs are employed for sensitive and selective detection of bilirubin (BR). A panel of characterizations (time-correlated single-photon count spectroscopy and photoluminescence (PL)) was carried out to investigate the detailed sensing study of PNCs-BR composite for quenching the PL emission of CsPbBr3 with BR. It has been noticed that the synthesized nanoparticles are highly capable of detecting BR and thus act as a biological material sensor.

Abstract
Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have a potential application in blood purification, but their microcrystalline nature has hampered their industrial application. Here, novel MOFs-polymer beads based on UiO, sodium alginate, polyacrylic acid, and poly (ethylene imine) were prepared and applied as a whole blood hemoadsorbent for the first time. The amidation among polymers immobilized UiO66-NH2 into the network of the optimal product (SAP-3), and the NH2 of UiO66-NH2 significantly increased the removal rate (70 % within 5 min) of SAP-3 on bilirubin. The adsorption of SAP-3 on bilirubin mainly obeyed the pseudo-second-order kinetic, Langmuir isotherm and Thomas models with a maximum adsorption capacity (qm) of 63.97 mg·g-1. Experimental and density functional theory simulation results show that bilirubin was mainly adsorbed by UiO66-NH2via electrostatic force, hydrogen bonding, and π-π interactions. Notably, the adsorption in vivo show that the total bilirubin removal rate in the whole blood of the rabbit model was up to 42 % after 1 h of adsorption. Given its excellent stability, cytotoxicity, and hemocompatibility, SAP-3 has a great potential in hemoperfusion therapy. This study proposes an effective strategy for settling the powder property of MOFs and could provide experimental and theoretical references for application of MOFs in blood purification.

Abstract
Due to the frequent spill accidents during crude oil exploration and transport, to rapidly cleanup crude oil and eliminate the environmental pollution of oil spill is in high demand. In this work, a three-dimensional graphene aerogel (MEGA) with high elasticity, photothermal conversion capacity and adsorption capacity was prepared for rapid removal of crude oil. The results showed that the as-prepared MEGA exhibited a layered structure, the octahedral HKUST-1 nanoparticles and hydrophobic polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) coatings were uniformly deposited on the surface. Such a hierarchical micro-nano porous structure not only improved the aerogel's hydrophobicity (water contact angle in air up to 152.7°), but also endowed it with strong oil adsorption capacity (41-118 times of its own weight). Especially, the MEGA showed excellent photothermal conversion capacity. Under light irradiation, its temperature raised to 80 ℃ from room temperature in 100 s. As a result, the adsorption for one drop of crude oil by MEGA was shortened from 5 h to 40 s, comparing with that in dark condition. In addition, the MEGA showed remarkable elasticity and mechanical stability, it could maintain more than 90% efficiency after 10 adsorption-compression cycles. This study suggests that the prepared MEGA has great potential for rapid removal of crude oil.

Abstract
The remediation of heavy metal deserves to be on the agenda, with the adsorbent design bearing the brunt of it. In this study, the molecule (4, 6-diamino-2-mercaptopyrimidine, DMP) containing thiol (-SH) and amino (-NH2) functional groups was grafted onto Uio-66-NH2, and a composite metal-organic framework nanomaterial (Zr(NH2)-DMP) was synthesized via a facile post-modification scheme. The morphological characteristics and structural features of the modified adsorbent were characterized by XRD, FT-IR, FE-SEM, EDS, BET, and XPS. The characterization results verified that the post-modification scheme was successfully achieved. The adsorption experiments were carried out to investigate the removal performance of the Zr(NH2)-DMP towards Hg2+ under different influencing parameters. The maximum adsorption capacity of 389.4 mg/g was obtained, and the adsorption equilibrium was achieved within 30 min at pH 6 at room temperature. Adsorption thermodynamic study indicated that the adsorption process was exothermic and spontaneous. The Zr(NH2)-DMP exhibited excellent selectivity for Hg2+, and also has the potential to remove Cu2+, Fe2+, and Zn2+ ions. The introduction of Cl- inhibited the removal of Hg2+ due to the formation of mercuric chlorides (removal efficiency reduced from 97.8 to 95.6%). The removal efficiency of up to 86.7% was obtained after four cycles. The Langmuir isotherm and Pseudo-second kinetic were more suitable for fitting the adsorption process of Hg2+ by Zr(NH2)-DMP. The main removal mechanism could be attributed to the chelation between Hg2+ (soft acid) and nitrogen/sulfur (soft base) elements. These findings convinced that the successful synthesis of Zr(NH2)-DMP provides an option for Hg2+ removal from wastewater.

Abstract
Employing long-lived luminescent materials to design a chemical sensing platform can eliminate real-time excitation and background fluorescence. However, the realization of long-lived emissions in aqueous media was limited to transition-metal complexes, doped quantum dots, organic crystals, and inorganic persistent phosphors, which suffer from the drawbacks of large size, expensive elements, and poor dispersibility. In this work, phosphorescent carbon dots (CDs) were covalently immobilized in a silica matrix (CDs@SiO2) to achieve afterglow emission in an aqueous dispersion. CDs@SiO2 with long lifetime (∼1.6 s) was utilized as an energy donor to fabricate nonradiative energy transfer systems with various organic dyes through the surface micelle self-assembly method. Benefiting from the high energy transfer efficiency between CDs@SiO2 and organic dyes, multicolor afterglow emissions were successfully obtained in aqueous media. As a proof of concept, a ratiometric phosphorescent probe using CDs@SiO2 as a donor and Hg2+-responsive rhodamine derivative as an acceptor was designed. Hg2+ triggered the energy transfer process between the donor-acceptor pair, leading to the sensitive detection of Hg2+ ions. The work presented here provides opportunities to develop chemical sensors with low background interferences and easily recognizable signals.

Abstract
Treatment of sulfur dots with polyethylene glycol (PEG) has been an efficient way to achieve a high luminescence quantum yield, and such a PEG-related quantum dot (QD)-synthesis strategy has been well documented. However, the polymeric insulating capping layer acting as the "thick shell" will significantly slow down the electron-transfer efficiency and severely hamper its practical application in an optoelectric field. Especially, the employment of synthetic polymers with long alkyl chains or large molecular weights may lead to structural complexity or even unexpected changes of physical characteristics for QDs. Therefore, in sulfur dot preparation, it is a breakthrough to use short-chain molecular species to replace PEG for better control and reproducibility. In this article, a solvent-type passivation (STP) strategy has been reported, and no PEG or any other capping agent is required. The main role of the solvent, ethanol, is to directly react with NaOH, and the generated sodium ethoxide passivates the surface defects. The afforded STP-enhanced emission sulfur dots (STPEE-SDs) possess not only the self-quenching-resistant feature in the solid state but also the extension of fluorescence band toward the wavelength as long as 645 nm. The realization of sulfur dot emission in the deep-red region with a decent yield (8.7%) has never been reported. Moreover, a super large Stokes shift (300 nm, λex = 345 nm, λem = 645 nm) and a much longer decay lifetime (109 μs) have been found, and such values can facilitate to suppress the negative influence from background signals. Density functional theory demonstrates that the surface passivation via sodium ethoxide is dynamically favorable, and the spectroscopic insights into emission behavior could be derived from the passivation effect of the sulfur vacancy as well as the charge-transfer process dominated by the highly electronegative ethoxide layer.

Abstract
Nanomaterials have been explored in the sensing research field in the last decades. Mainly, 3D nanomaterials have played a vital role in advancing biomedical applications, and less attention was given to their application in the field of biosensors for pathogenic virus detection. The versatility and tunability of a wide range of nanomaterials contributed to the development of a rapid, portable biosensor platform. In this review, we discuss 3D nanospheres, one of the classes of nanostructured materials with a homogeneous and dense matrix wherein a guest substance is carried within the matrix or on its surface. This review is segmented based on the type of nanosphere and their elaborative application in various sensing techniques. We emphasize the concept of signal amplification strategies using different nanosphere structures constructed from a polymer, carbon, silica, and metal-organic framework (MOF) for rendering high-level sensitivity of virus detection. We also briefly elaborate on some challenges related to the further development of nanosphere-based biosensors, including the toxicity issue of the used nanomaterial and the commercialization hurdle.

Abstract
Metal graphitic nanocapsules have the advantages of both graphitic and metal nanomaterials, showing great promise in biomedicine. On one hand, the chemically inert graphitic shells are able to protect the metal core from external environments, quench the fluorescence signal from the biological system, offer robust platform for targeted molecules or drugs loading, and act as stable Raman labels or internal standard molecule. On the other hand, the metal cores with different compositions, sizes, and morphologies show unique physicochemical properties, and further broaden their biomedical functions. In this review, we firstly introduce the preparation, classification, and properties of metal graphitic nanocapsules, then summarize the recent progress of their applications in biodetection, bioimaging, and therapy. Challenges and their development prospects in biomedicine are eventually discussed in detail. We expect the versatile metal graphitic nanocapsules will advance the development of future clinical biomedicine.

Abstract
The stability of MOFs plays one of the most important roles in material applications, while the delicate structure of MOFs suffers from the limitation of poor alkali tolerance. A new biligand Zr-MOF (biUIO-66-NH2NO2) with alkali-resistance performance and active functional groups has been synthesized in this study. The biUIO-66-NH2NO2 demonstrated a much better stability in 1% NH3·H2O solution than its parent material, UIO-66-NH2. Following further immobilization of Zr4+ ions, the biDZMOF consisting of dual-zirconium centers was prepared and was further applied in global enrichment of phosphopeptides by avoiding the instability of enrichment materials in the essential alkali elution procedure for the phosphopeptide enrichment workflow. The alkali-resistant elution of phosphopeptides from the biDZMOF can be directly coupled to a tandem mass spectrometry system for peptide analysis without desalting treatment. 425 phosphopeptides in total in 3 independent samples were identified from 10 μL human saliva after enrichment with biDZMOF. The improvement in alkali resistance and successful post-modification of biUIO-66-NH2NO2 suggest an efficient strategy to develop new types of MOF materials for application.

Abstract
This study developed a miniaturized optomechanical device (MOD) for the feasibility study of direct bilirubin in urine using high-collimation blue mini-light-emitting diodes (Mini-LEDs) as the light source. The constructed MOD used optical spectroscopy to analyze different concentrations of direct bilirubin using the absorbance spectrum to achieve a noninvasive method for detection. The experimental results showed that between the absorbance and different concentrations of direct bilirubin at the blue Mini-LEDs central wavelength (462 nm) was the optimum fitting wavelength; in the direct bilirubin concentration range from 0.855 to 17.1 μmol/L, the coefficient of determination (R2) was 0.9999, the limit of detection (LOD) of 0.171 μmol/L, and the limit of quantitation (LOQ) of 0.570 μmol/L. Therefore, we propose using blue Mini-LEDs as a light source to design a MOD to replace the invasive blood sampling method with a spectroscopic detection of direct bilirubin concentration corresponding to absorbance.

Abstract
The development of sensitive and selective detection methods for hydroquinone (HQ), a phenolic organic compound with high toxicity and low degradability, is of extraordinary importance. In this work, a fluorescent sensor based on functionalized luminescent metal-organic frameworks (LMOFs) was designed and applied for the ratiometric fluorescence sensing of HQ. The sensor was prepared by the functionalization of IRMOF-3 with rhodamine B (RhB), possessing dual-emission fluorescence properties. After the addition of HQ, the blue fluorescence of the IRMOF-3 framework was gradually weakened, while the red fluorescence of RhB remained unchanged, resulting in the continuous fluorescence change of RhB@IRMOF-3 with HQ concentrations. The sensing mechanism demonstrates that HQ changes the fluorescence of the sensor via electron transfer between benzoquinone and RhB@IRMOF-3. The RhB@IRMOF-3 sensor has the advantages of a wide linear range, quick response speed, and strong specificity for HQ detection. This work is the first attempt focusing on functionalized LMOFs for HQ fluorescence detection, which has superb potential for the application to real environmental water samples.

Abstract
In vitro biosensing chips are urgently needed for early-stage diagnosis and real-time surveillance of epidemic diseases. Herein, a versatile zone with photothermal effects is implanted in the miniature space of a collapsible lab-on-paper photoelectrochemical biosensor for on-site detection of microRNA-141 in body fluids, which can flexibly interconnect the traditional photocurrent signal with functional temperature response. The visualized thermoresponsive results are enhanced by the exciton energy conversion between Fe3O4 nanoparticles (Fe3O4 NPs) and formed Prussian blue nanoparticles under near-infrared irradiation, which not only presents heat energy gradient variations but also generates color changes. Significantly, the controlled release of Fe3O4 NPs is actuated by a target-triggered enzyme assist strand displacement cycle strategy to efficiently improve the accuracy of target temperature signal prediction, which can concurrently mediate photoelectric signal attenuation via promoting the rapid recombination of photoexcited charge carriers on the CuInS2/CoIn2S4 electrode surface, affording dependable ultrasensitive detection results. Benefitting from the ingenious design of the versatile thermoresponsive-photoelectric sensing platform, the preliminary screening and ultrasensitive quantitative analysis can be simultaneously achieved in a single-drop sample. As a consequence, speedy prediction results and satisfied monitoring data are acquired in the ranges of 0.5 pM to 2 nM and 0.001 pM to 5 nM by measuring the temperature change and photocurrent intensity. By right of these advantages, such research paves a prospective paradigm for the manufacture of a visual, rapid, broad-spectrum, and reliable real-time surveillance platform, which allows it to be a promising candidate for epidemic disease home diagnosis and intelligent diagnosis.

Abstract
Carbon dots have been prepared from resorcinol and sucrose (rsCDs) hydrothermally, which show green emission at 525 nm with a fluorescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 17.2%. The intense emission of rsCDs is quenched upon the addition of Cu2+. In the presence of bilirubin (BR), the emission intensity is enhanced due to the competitive binding of Cu2+ with bilirubin and hence releasing rsCDs to the sensing medium. It is the first time report on turn-on fluorescence sensing towards BR with a detection limit of 85 nM. Even in the presence of other comparable biomolecules, the sensor is selective and ultrasensitive to bilirubin. A cellulose paper-based sensor strip has also been designed for the naked-eye detection of BR in blood serum. Due to the specific recognition of this rsCDs towards BR, it can be applied to detect BR in practical human serum samples.

Abstract
Radioactive U(VI) in nuclear wastewater is a global environmental pollutant that poses a great threat to human health. Therefore, it is of great significance to develop a U(VI) sensor with desirable sensitivity and selectivity. Inspired by electron-donating group modification for enhancement of binding affinity toward U(VI), we report an amine group functionalization of UiO-66-NH2, using a low-cost, environmentally friendly, and low-temperature NH3 plasma technique as a fluorescence switching nanoprobe for highly sensitive and selective detection of U(VI). The resulting amine-functionalized UiO-66-NH2 (LTP@UiO-66-NH2) shows dramatically enhanced fluorescence emission and selective sensitivity for U(VI) on the basis of the quenching effect. The quenching efficiency increases from 58 to 80% with the same U(VI) concentration (17.63 μM) after NH3 plasma functionalization. As a result, the LTP@UiO-66-NH2 has the best Ksv (1.81 × 105 M-1, 298 K) and among the lowest LODs (0.08 μM, 19.04 ppb) compared with those reported in the literature. Intraday and interday precision and application in real environment experiments indicate stable and accurate U(VI) detection performance. Fluorescence lifetime and temperature-dependent detection experiments reveal that the quenching mechanism belongs to the static quenching interaction. The highly selective fluorescence detection is attributed to the selective binding of U(VI) by the rich functionalized amine groups of LTP@UiO-66-NH2. This work provides an efficient fluorescence probe for highly sensitive U(VI) detection in water, and a new strategy of tailored plasma functionalization for developing a practical MOF sensor platform for enhanced fluorescence emission, sensitivity, and selectivity for detecting trace amounts of radioactive species in the environment.

Abstract
The synthesis of nanosized metal-organic frameworks (NMOFs) is requisite for their application as injectable drug delivery systems (DDSs) and other biorelevant purposes. Herein, we have critically examined the role of different synthetic parameters leading to the production of UiO-66 crystals smaller than 100 nm. Of note, we demonstrate the co-modulator role conferred by halide ions, not only to produce NMOFs with precise morphology and size, but also to significantly improve the reaction yield. The resulting NMOFs are highly crystalline and exhibit sustained colloidal stability in different biologically relevant media. As a proof of concept, these NMOFs were loaded with Rhodamine 6G (R6G), which remained trapped in most common biologically relevant media. When incubated with living mammalian cells, the R6G-loaded NMOFs were efficiently internalized and did not impair cell viability even at relatively high doses.

Abstract
Neonatal jaundice is one of the most common clinical conditions affecting newborns. For most newborns, jaundice is harmless, however, a proportion of newborns develops severe neonatal jaundice requiring therapeutic interventions, accentuating the need to have reliable and accurate screening tools for timely recognition across different health settings. The gold standard method in diagnosing jaundice involves a blood test and requires specialized hospital-based laboratory instruments. Despite technological advancements in point-of-care laboratory medicine, there is limited accessibility of the specialized devices and sample stability in geographically remote areas. Lack of suitable testing options leads to delays in timely diagnosis and treatment of clinically significant jaundice in developed and developing countries alike. There has been an ever-increasing need for a low-cost, simple to use screening technology to improve timely diagnosis and management of neonatal jaundice. Consequently, several point-of-care (POC) devices have been developed to address this concern. This paper aims to review the literature, focusing on emerging technologies in the screening and diagnosing of neonatal jaundice. We report on the challenges associated with the existing screening tools, followed by an overview of emerging sensors currently in pre-clinical development and the emerging POC devices in clinical trials to advance the screening of neonatal jaundice. The benefits offered by emerging POC devices include their ease of use, low cost, and the accessibility of rapid response test results. However, further clinical trials are required to overcome the current limitations of the emerging POC's before their implementation in clinical settings. Hence, the need for a simple to use, low-cost POC jaundice detection technology for newborns remains an unsolved challenge globally.
