Strategies for Incorporating Catalytically Active Polyoxometalates in Metal-Organic Frameworks for Organic Transformations

Role of Metal-Organic Framework Topology on Thermodynamics of Polyoxometalate Encapsulation

Polyoxometalates (POMs) are discrete anionic clusters whose rich redox properties, strong Bro̷nsted acidity, and high availability of active sites make them potent catalysts for oxidation reactions. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as tunable, porous platforms to immobilize POMs, thus increasing their solution stability and catalytic activity. While POM@MOF composite materials have been widely used for a variety of applications, little is known about the thermodynamics of the encapsulation process. Here, we utilize an up-and-coming technique in the field of heterogeneous materials, isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC), to obtain full thermodynamic profiles (ΔH, ΔS, ΔG, and Ka) of POM binding. Six different 8-connected hexanuclear Zr-MOFs were investigated to determine the impact of MOF topology (csq, scu, and the) on POM encapsulation thermodynamics.

Zirconium-rich magnetic polyoxometalate-based metal-organic framework: Tailored for phosphopeptide analysis from lung cancer A549 cells

Polyoxometalate-based metal-organic frameworks (POMOFs) have become a promising affinity material for separation and enrichment. The analysis of protein phosphorylation represents a challenge for the development of efficient enrichment materials. Here, a novel zirconium-rich magnetic POMOF was successfully designed and prepared for the enrichment of phosphopeptides. The binding affinity of the nanomaterial partly came from Fe-O clusters in the MOF. The Lewis acid-base interactions between V-O clusters and zirconium ions in V10O28-Zr4+ and phosphate groups in phosphopeptides further strengthened the enrichment ability. The zirconium-rich magnetic POMOF was employed to capture phosphopeptides from non-fat milk, human saliva, and serum. Additionally, 748 unique phosphopeptide peaks were detected from the tryptic digests of lung cancer A549 cell proteins with a high specificity (86.9 %). POMOFs will become an active competitor for the design of protein affinity materials and will provide a new approach for phosphopeptide analysis.

Recent Progress on Functionalized Nanoporous Heteropoly Acids: From Synthesis to Applications

Functionalized nanoporous heteropoly acids (HPAs) have garnered significant attention in recent years due to their enhanced surface area and porosity, as well as their potential for low-cost regeneration compared to bulk materials. This review aims to provide an overview of the recent advancements in the synthesis and applications of functionalized HPAs. We begin by introducing the fundamental properties of HPAs and their unique structure, followed by a comprehensive overview of the various approaches employed for the synthesis of functionalized HPAs, including salts, anchoring onto supports, and implementing mesoporous silica sieves. The potential applications of functionalized HPAs in various fields are also discussed, highlighting their boosted performance in a wide range of applications. Finally, we address the current challenges and present future prospects in the development of functionalized HPAs, particularly in the context of mesoporous HPAs. This review aims to provide a comprehensive summary of the recent progress in the field, highlighting the significant advancements made in the synthesis and applications of functionalized HPAs.

Modulator-assisted solvent-free synthesis of amorphous zirconium terephthalate catalyst for efficient oxidative desulfurization

Oxidative desulfurization (ODS) emerges as a critical player in enhancing efficient fuel desulfurization and promoting sustainable clean energy. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) show great potential as ODS catalysts because of their exceptional porosity and versatility. This study explores the use of amorphous metal-organic frameworks (aMOFs), which combine MOFs' structural advantages with unique properties of amorphous materials, to enhance catalytic efficiency in ODS. Traditional methods for synthesizing MOFs rely on solvent-thermal or solvent-free methods, each with limitations in environmental impact or scalability. To address this, we introduce a novel strategy utilizing a small quantity of benzoic acid (BA) modifier to facilitate the solvent-free, one-pot, mechanical synthesis of amorphous zirconium terephthalate (GU-2BA-3h). The resulting GU-2BA-3h demonstrates exceptional ODS performance, efficiently removing 1000 ppm of dibenzothiophene (DBT) in just 6 min at 60 °C. Amorphous GU-2BA-3h features an expanded external surface area, increased acidic sites, and exceptional stability, resulting in a high turnover frequency (19.6 h-1) and outstanding catalytic activity (53.2 mmol g-1 h-1), establishing it as a highly efficient ODS catalyst. This remarkable performance arises from the formation of dangling carboxyl groups and active metal sites due to the competitive coordination of benzoic acid with the linker. Experimental evidence confirms that these carboxyl groups and exposed Zr-OH sites interact with oxidants, generating hydroxyl radicals that effectively eliminate sulfur-containing compounds. Furthermore, the methodology exhibits universality in constructing amorphous Zr-based MOFs, and provides an eco-friendly, cost-effective route for efficient ODS catalyst production.

Switchable Redox and Thermo-Responsive Supramolecular Polymers Based on Cyclodextrin-Polyoxometalate Tandem

Supramolecular polymers built from stimuli-responsive host-guest interactions represent an attractive way of tailoring smart materials. Herein, we exploit the chaotropic effect of polyoxometalates and related host-guest properties to design unconventional polymer systems with reversible redox and thermo-responsive sol-gel transition. These supramolecular networks result from the association of cyclodextrin-based oligomers and Keggin-type POMs acting as electro-active crosslinking agents. The structure and the dynamics of such self-assembly systems have been investigated using a multiscale approach involving MALDI-TOF, viscosity measurements, cyclic voltammetry, 1 H-NMR (1D and DOSY), and Small-Angle X-ray Scattering. Our results reveal that the chaotropic effect corresponds to a powerful and efficient force that can be used to induce responsiveness in hybrid supramolecular oligomeric systems.

A porous Anderson-type polyoxometalate-based metal-organic framework as a multifunctional platform for selective oxidative coupling with amines

Incorporating catalytic units into a crystalline porous matrix represents a facile way to build high-efficiency heterogeneous catalysts, and by rational design of the porous skeleton with appropriate building blocks the catalytic performance can be significantly enhanced for a series of organic transformations owing to the synergistic effect from the multicomponent and confined porous microenvironment around catalytically active sites. Herein, we demonstrate that the design and synthesis of a porous polyoxometalate-based metal-organic framework YL2(H2O)2[CrMo6O18(PET)2]·4H2O (POMOF-1) constructed from Anderson-type [CrMo6O18(PET)2] (PET = pentaerythritol), which can be employed as a multifunctional platform for synthesis of N-containing compounds via selective oxidative coupling with amines. POMOF-1 features microporous 1D channels defined by Y3+ and L, with [CrMo6O18(PET)2] arranged orderly between adjacent Lvia electrostatic interactions. Upon using POMOF-1 as a catalyst and H2O2 as an oxidant, a variety of amines could be effectively converted to value-added amides, imines and azobenzenes via the oxidative cross-coupling with alcohols or homo-coupling. In particular, POMOF-1 showed dramatically improved activity for the N-formylation reaction owing to the synergistic and confinement effect, with the yield of amides up to 95% and 4 times higher than that of homogeneous [CrMo6O18(PET)2]. Meanwhile, the oxidative homo-coupling of arylmethylamines and arylamines can be facilely tuned by adjustment of the amount of oxidant, solvent and additive, affording imines and azobenzenes in high selectivity and yield, respectively. POMOF-1 is robust and can be reused for 5 cycles with little loss of catalytic activity and structural integrity. The work demonstrates that the combination of catalytically active POMs with crystalline porous MOFs holds great potential to build robust and recyclable heterogeneous systems with enhanced activity and selectivity for multifunctional catalysis.

Modulated synthesis of cesium phosphomolybdate encapsulated in hierarchical porous UiO-66 for catalysing alkene epoxidation

The hybrid composite of cesium phosphomolybdate (CsPM) encapsulated in hierarchical porous UiO-66 (HP-UiO-66) was synthesized using a modulated solvothermal method. A variety of characterization results demonstrated that the pore size distribution of CsPM@HP-UiO-66 is broader than traditional microporous CsPM@UiO-66 and cesium phosphomolybdate clusters are uniformly distributed in the octahedral cages of HP-UiO-66. The catalytic properties of the hybrid composite were investigated in alkene epoxidation reaction with tert-butyl hydroperoxide (t-BuOOH) as an oxidant. CsPM@HP-UiO-66 showed much higher catalytic activity for the alkene epoxidation reaction in comparison with the reference catalysts and could be easily reused by centrifugation and recycled for at least ten runs without significant loss in catalytic activity. The superior catalytic activity and stability of the hybrid composite CsPM@HP-UiO-66 should be mainly attributed to the hierarchical pores in the support HP-UiO-66 promoting the diffusion of alkene molecules, the uniform distribution of highly active CsPM clusters in the octahedral cages of HP-UiO-66, the introduction of cesium cations to form the insoluble cesium phosphomolybdate and the strong metal-support interactions (SMSI) between the CsPM clusters and the HP-UiO-66 framework.

Bioinspired Cu(II) Defect Sites in ZIF-8 for Selective Methane Oxidation

Activating the C-H bonds of alkanes without further oxidation to more thermodynamically stable products, CO and CO2, is a long-sought goal of catalytic chemistry. Inspired by the monocopper active site of methane monooxygenase, we synthesized a Cu-doped ZIF-8 metal-organic framework with 25% Cu and 75% Zn in the nodes and activated it by heating to 200 °C and dosing in a stepwise fashion with O2, methane, and steam. We found that it does oxidize methane to methanol and formaldehyde. The catalysis persists through at least five cycles, and beyond the third cycle, the selectivity improves to the extent that no CO2 can be detected. Experimental characterization and analysis were carried out by PXRD, DRUV-vis, SEM, and XAS (XANES and EXAFS). The reaction is postulated to proceed at open-coordination copper sites generated by defects, and the mechanism of methanol production was explicated by density functional calculations with the revMO6-L exchange-correlation functional. The calculations reveal a catalytic cycle of oxygen-activated CuI involving the conversion of two molecules of CH4 to two molecules of CH3OH by a sequence of hydrogen atom transfer reactions and rebound steps. For most steps in the cycle, the reaction is more favored by singlet species than by triplets.

Recent Advances in Confining Polyoxometalates and the Applications

Polyoxometalates (POMs) are widely used in catalysis, energy storage, biomedicine, and other research fields due to their unique acidity, photothermal, and redox features. However, the leaching and agglomeration problems of POMs greatly limit their practical applications. Confining POMs in a host material is an efficient tool to address the above-mentioned issues. POM@host materials have received extensive attention in recent years. They not only inherent characteristics of POMs and host, but also play a significant synergistic effect from each component. This review focuses on the recent advances in the development and applications of POM@host materials. Different types of host materials are elaborated in detail, including tubular, layered, and porous materials. Variations in the structures and properties of POMs and hosts before and after confinement are highlighted as well. In addition, an overview of applications for the representative POM@host materials in electrochemical, catalytic, and biological fields is provided. Finally, the challenges and future perspectives of POM@host composites are discussed.

Microchemical environmental regulation of POMs@MIL-101(Cr) promote photocatalytic nitrogen to ammonia

The polyoxometalates (POMs) have been shown to be highly effective as reactive sites for photocatalytic nitrogen fixation reactions. However, the effect of POMs regulation on catalytic performance has not been reported yet. Herein, a series of composites (SiW₉M₃@MIL-101(Cr) (M = Fe, Co, V, Mo) and D-SiW₉Mo₃@MIL-101(Cr), D, Disordered) were obtained by regulating transition metal compositions and arrangement in the POMs. The ammonia production rate of SiW₉Mo₃@MIL-101(Cr) is much higher than that of other composites, reaching 185.67 μmol·h^-1·g^-1_cat in N₂ without sacrificial agents. The structural characterization of composites reveals that the increase of the electron cloud density of W atom in composites is the key to improve the photocatalytic performance. In this paper, the microchemical environment of POMs was regulated by transition metal doping method, thereby promoting the efficiency of photocatalytic ammonia synthesis for the composites, which provides new insights into the design of POM-based photocatalysts with high catalytic activity.

Molecular Catalysis of Energy Relevance in Metal-Organic Frameworks: From Higher Coordination Sphere to System Effects

The modularity and synthetic flexibility of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have provoked analogies with enzymes, and even the term MOFzymes has been coined. In this review, we focus on molecular catalysis of energy relevance in MOFs, more specifically water oxidation, oxygen and carbon dioxide reduction, as well as hydrogen evolution in context of the MOF-enzyme analogy. Similar to enzymes, catalyst encapsulation in MOFs leads to structural stabilization under turnover conditions, while catalyst motifs that are synthetically out of reach in a homogeneous solution phase may be attainable as secondary building units in MOFs. Exploring the unique synthetic possibilities in MOFs, specific groups in the second and third coordination sphere around the catalytic active site have been incorporated to facilitate catalysis. A key difference between enzymes and MOFs is the fact that active site concentrations in the latter are often considerably higher, leading to charge and mass transport limitations in MOFs that are more severe than those in enzymes. High catalyst concentrations also put a limit on the distance between catalysts, and thus the available space for higher coordination sphere engineering. As transport is important for MOF-borne catalysis, a system perspective is chosen to highlight concepts that address the issue. A detailed section on transport and light-driven reactivity sets the stage for a concise review of the currently available literature on utilizing principles from Nature and system design for the preparation of catalytic MOF-based materials.

Polyoxometalate-based frameworks for photocatalysis and photothermal catalysis

Polyoxometalate-based frameworks (POM-based frameworks) are extended structures assembled from metal-oxide cluster units and organic frameworks that simultaneously possess the virtues of POMs and frameworks. They have been attracting immense attention because of their diverse architectures and charming topologies and also due to their probable application prospects in the areas of catalysis, separation, and energy storage. In this review, the recent progress in POM-based frameworks including POM-based metal organic frameworks (PMOFs), POM-based covalent organic frameworks (PCOFs), and POM-based supramolecular frameworks (PSFs) is systematically summarized. The design and construction of a POM-based framework and its application in photocatalysis and photothermal catalysis are introduced, respectively. Finally, our brief outlooks on the current challenges and future development of POM-based frameworks for photocatalysis and photothermal catalysis are provided.

Layer-by-Layer Construction of a Nanoarchitecture by Polyoxometalates and Polymers: Enhanced Electrochemical Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

In this contribution, a nanoarchitectural approach was employed to produce a nanolayer of polyoxometalate (POM) on the surface of a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) to achieve a higher surface area with higher electrocatalytic activity toward the electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). To accomplish this, the well-known layer-by-layer (LbL) technique was employed, which involved the alternate adsorption of the POM, Na_0.3[N(C₄H₉)₄]_7.7 [(Mo₃O₈)₄(O₃PC(O)(C₃H₆NH₂CH₂C₄H₃S)PO₃)₄], abbreviated as [(TBA)Mo₁₂(AleThio)₄], and polyethyleneimine (PEI) polymer. This nanolayered electrode exhibited catalytic properties toward the HER in 0.5 M H₂SO₄ with the resulting polarization curves indicating an increase in the HER activity with the increasing number of POM layers, and the overpotential required for this reaction was lowered by 0.83 V when compared with a bare GCE. The eighth PEI/[(TBA)Mo₁₂(AleThio)₄] bilayer exhibited a significantly lower HER overpotential of -0.077 V at a current density of 10 mA cm^-2. Surface characterization of the LbL-assembled nanolayers was carried out using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. We believe that the synergetic effect of the positively charged PEI polymer and the catalytically active molybdate POM is the cause for the successful response to the electrochemical HER.

Opioid Drug Detection in Hair Samples Using Polyoxometalate-Based Frameworks

A series of two-dimensional (2D) polyoxometalate-based frameworks, [Ln₃(PDA)₃(H₂O)₆(PMo₁₂O₄₀)]·xH₂O (Ln = La (1); Ce (2); Pr (3); Nd (4); PDA = 1,10-phenanthroline-2,9-dicarboxylate), have been synthesized and structurally characterized by various analytical techniques. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction reveals that 1-4 have a unique 2D layer structure in which Keggin anions have coordinated upward and downward the plane, and this feature makes them suitable candidates for surface binding of common drugs via supramolecular and electrostatic interactions. Also, the ability of 1-4 (as the first polyoxomolybdate-containing frameworks) as sorbents for the extraction and quantitative determination of opioid drugs (morphine, methadone, and pethidine) was investigated by using dispersive micro-solid-phase extraction (D-μSPE) and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The method showed wide linear ranges in the range of 0.3 to 300 ng mg^-1 and low limits of detection (LODs) ranged from 0.1 to 0.2 ng mg^-1 of hair.

Immobilization of Peroxo-Heteropoly Compound and Palladium on Hydroxyapatite for the Epoxidation of Propylene by Molecular Oxygen in Methanol

Peroxo-heteropoly compound PO₄[W(O)(O₂)₂] was synthesized on calcium-deficient hydroxyapatite using a reaction of surface [HPO₄]^2- groups on hydroxyapatite with a Na₂[W₂O₃(O₂)₄] aqueous solution. The vibration of [HPO₄]^2- at 875 cm^-1 became very weak, and the vibration of the peroxo-oxygen bond [O-O]^2- at 845 cm^-1 appeared in the FT-IR spectrum of the solid product, indicating that PO₄[W(O)(O₂)₂] was formed on the surface of hydroxyapatite. The formed solid sample was further reacted with PdCl₂(PhCN)₂ in an acetone solution to fix PdCl₂ between the O sites on the hydroxyapatite. Elemental analyses proved that the resultant solid contained 1.2 wt.% Pd, implying that PdCl₂ molecules were immobilized on the surface of hydroxyapatite. The hydroxyapatite-based hybrid compound containing Pd and PO₄[W(O)(O₂)₂] was used as a heterogeneous catalyst in a methanol solvent for propylene epoxidation by molecular oxygen in an autoclave batch reaction system. A propylene conversion of 53.4% and a selectivity for propylene oxide of 88.7% were obtained over the solid catalyst after reaction at 363 K for 8 h. The novel catalyst could be reused by a simple centrifugal separation, and the yield of propylene oxide did not decrease after the reaction for five runs. By prolonging the reaction time to 13 h, the highest yield of propylene oxide at 363 K over the solid catalyst was obtained as 53.8%, which was almost the same as that of the homogeneous catalyst containing PdCl₂(PhCN)₂ and [(C₆H₁₃)₄N]₂{HPO₄[W(O)(O₂)₂]₂} for the propylene epoxidation. Methanol was used as a solvent as well as a reducing agent in the propylene epoxidation by molecular oxygen. Small particles of Pd metal were formed on the surface of the hybrid solid catalyst during the reaction, and acted as active species to achieve the catalytic turnover of PO₄[W(O)(O₂)₂] in the propylene epoxidation by molecular oxygen in methanol.

Zr-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks with Phosphoric Acids for the Photo-Oxidation of Sulfides

Heterogeneous Brønsted acidic catalysts such as phosphoric acids are the conventional activators for organic transformations. However, the photocatalytic performance of these catalysts is still rarely explored. Herein, a novel Zr-based metal-organic framework Zr-MOF-P with phosphoric acids as a heterogeneous photocatalyst has been fabricated, which shows high selectivity and reactivity towards the photo-oxidation of sulfides under white light illumination. A mechanism study indicates that the selective oxygenation of sulfides occurs with triplet oxygen rather than common reactive oxygen species (ROS). When Zr-MOF-P is irradiated, the hydroxyl group of phosphoric acid is converted into oxygen radical, which takes an electron from the sulfides, and then the activated substrates react with the triplet oxygen to form sulfoxides, avoiding the destruction of the catalysts and endowing the reaction with high substrate compatibility and fine recyclability.

Enhanced Catalytic Performance of a Ce/V Oxo Cluster through Confinement in Mesoporous SBA-15

To increase catalytic efficiency, mesoporous supports have been widely applied to immobilize well-defined metal oxide clusters due to their ability to stabilize highly dispersed clusters. Herein, a redox-active heterometallic Ce₁₂V₆-oxo cluster (CeV) was first presynthesized and then incorporated into mesoporous silica, SBA-15, via a straightforward impregnation method. Scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), in concert with scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), verified the successful introduction of the CeV cluster inside the pore of SBA-15. The ⁵¹V magic angle spinning solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (⁵¹V MAS NMR) spectroscopy and differential pair distribution function (dPDF) analysis confirmed the structural integrity of the CeV cluster inside the SBA-15. The composite was then benchmarked for liquid-phase oxidation of 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide (CEES) under mild conditions and gas-phase oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) of propane under high temperatures (up to 550 °C). The catalytic reactivity results demonstrated 8- and 14-fold increase in turnover frequency (TOF) values of the composite (CeV@10SBA-2) than the bulk CeV cluster under the same conditions for CEES oxidation and ODH, respectively. These results highlight the improved reactivity of the catalytically active CeV cluster as attributed to the higher dispersion of the discrete cluster upon immobilization within the SBA-15 support.

MOF/POM hybrids as catalysts for organic transformations

Insertion of molecular metal oxides, e.g. polyoxometalates (POMs), into metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) opens up new research opportunities in various fields, particularly in catalysis. POM/MOF composites have strong acidity, oxygen-rich surface, and redox capacity due to typical characteristics of POMs and the large surface area, highly organized structures, tunable pore size, and shape are due to MOFs. Such hybrid materials have gained a lot of attention due to astonishing structural features, and hence have potential applications in organic catalysis, sorption and separation, proton conduction, magnetism, lithium-ion batteries, supercapacitors, electrochemistry, medicine, bio-fuel, and so on. The exceptional chemical and physical characteristics of POMOFs make them useful as catalysts in simple organic transformations with high capacity and selectivity. Here, the thorough catalytic study starts with a brief introduction related to POMs and MOFs, and is followed by the synthetic strategies and applications of these materials in several catalytic organic transformations. Furthermore, catalytic conversions like oxidation, condensation, esterification, and some other types of catalytic reactions including photocatalytic reactions are discussed in length with their plausible catalytic mechanisms. The disadvantages of the POMOFs and difficulties faced in the field have also been explored briefly from our perspectives.

Two Copper-Containing Polyoxometalate-Based Metal-Organic Complexes as Heterogeneous Catalysts for the C-H Bond Oxidation of Benzylic Compounds and Olefin Epoxidation

Using a one-pot assembly method, two novel copper-containing Keggin-type polyoxometalates (POMs)-based metal-organic complexes, that is, [Cu^II₂(pbba)₂NO₃^-(H₂O)₂(PW₁₂O₄₀)]·3H₂O [PW₁₂-Cu-pbba, H₂pbba = 1,1'-(1,4-phenylene-bis(methylene))-bis(pyridine-3-carboxylic acid)] and [Cu^II₂(pbba)₂(H₂O)₂(GeW₁₂O₄₀)]·3H₂O (GeW₁₂-Cu-pbba), were successfully synthesized. These two complexes are isostructural, differing only in their POM components. They are applicable as heterogeneous catalysts for the C-H bond oxidation of benzylic compounds and olefin epoxidation under mild conditions, with oxygen as the oxidant and isobutyraldehyde as the coreductant. The catalytic activity of PW₁₂-Cu-pbba was superior to that of GeW₁₂-Cu-pbba. Under the optimal conditions, PW₁₂-Cu-pbba catalyzed the oxidation of indane into 1-indanone with an 81% yield and >99% selectivity within 48 h. As heterogeneous catalysts, both complexes demonstrated excellent recoverability and high stability and could be stably reused five times without significant activity loss.

Polyoxometalate-based materials in extraction, and electrochemical and optical detection methods: A review

Polyoxometalates (POMs) as metal-oxide anions have exceptional properties like high negative charges, remarkable redox abilities, unique ligand properties and availability of organic grafting. Moreover, the amenability of POMs to modification with different materials makes them suitable as precursors to further obtain new composites. Due to their unique attributes, POMs and their composites have been utilized as adsorbents, electrodes and catalysts in extraction, and electrochemical and optical detection methods, respectively. A survey of the recent progress and developments of POM-based materials in these methods is therefore desirable, and should be of great interest. In this review article, POM-based materials, their properties as well as their identification methods, and analytical applications as adsorbents, electrodes and catalysts, and corresponding mechanisms of action, where relevant, are reviewed. Some current issues of the utilization of these materials and their future prospects in analytical chemistry are discussed.

Immobilization of Polyoxometalates on Carbon Nanotubes: Tuning Catalyst Activity, Selectivity and Stability in H2O2-Based Oxidations

In recent years, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), including N-doped ones (N-CNTs), have received significant attention as supports for the construction of heterogeneous catalysts. In this work, we summarize our progress in the application of (N)-CNTs for immobilization of anionic metal-oxygen clusters or polyoxometalates (POMs) and use of (N)-CNTs-supported POM as catalysts for liquid-phase selective oxidation of organic compounds with the green oxidant–aqueous hydrogen peroxide. We discuss here the main factors, which favor adsorption of POMs on (N)-CNTs and ensure a quasi-molecular dispersion of POM on the surface and their strong attachment to the support. The effects of the POM nature, N-doping of CNTs, acid additives, and other factors on the POM immobilization process and catalytic activity/selectivity of the (N)-CNTs-immobilized POMs are analyzed. Particular attention is drawn to the critical issue of the catalyst stability and reusability. The scope and limitations of the POM/(N)-CNTs catalysts in H2O2-based selective oxidations are discussed.

A Catalytically Accessible Polyoxometalate in a Porous Fiber for Degradation of a Mustard Gas Simulant

Polyoxometalates (POMs) are versatile materials for chemical catalysis due to their tunable acidity and rich redox properties. While POMs have attracted significant attention in homogeneous catalysis, challenges regarding aggregation and instability in solvents often prevent the wide implementation of POMs as heterogeneous catalysts. Therefore, the successful incorporation of a POM into a solid support, such as a polymer, is desirable for practical applications where unique functionalities of the POM combine with the advantages of the polymer. In this work, we showcase how polymers of intrinsic microporosity (PIMs) can serve as matrices for anchoring a pure inorganic Keggin-type POM (H₃PW₁₂O₄₀) to fabricate PIM-based composite materials. Specifically, we found that PIMs installed with amidoxime functionalities could successfully attach POMs (PW₁₂@PIM-1-AO) without self-segregation. Furthermore, we fabricated porous fibrous mats via electrospinning of the PIM-POM composites. Comprehensive characterization confirmed the integrity of the POM in the composite material. Following this, we demonstrated that the incorporated POMs in the composite fibers maintained their innate catalytic activity for the oxidative degradation of 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide, a sulfur mustard simulant, in the presence of hydrogen peroxide as the oxidant. Ultimately, our work highlights that PIM-based hybrid materials provide a potential route for implementing these reactive fiber mats into protective equipment.

Keggin-type SiW12 encapsulated in MIL-101(Cr) as efficient heterogeneous photocatalysts for nitrogen fixation reaction

The incorporation of polyoxometalates (POMs) in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with host-guest structure have proven to be effective strategy to rational design of heterogeneous catalysis. In this study, the Keggin-type POM@MIL-101(Cr) composite catalysts (PMo₁₂, PW₁₂ and SiW₁₂) are synthesized for nitrogen fixation reaction without sacrificial agents at room temperature in the first time. The SiW₁₂ molecules are encapsulated in smaller cavities of MIL-101(Cr) by solvothermal method and in larger cavities by impregnation method, respectively. Solvothermal synthesized catalyst has a performance of 75.56 μmol·h^-1·g^-1_cat and TOF value of 1.95 h^-1, which are about 10 and 88 times than that of Na₄SiW₁₂O₄₀. The excellent performance is ascribed to the synergistic effect of SiW₁₂ and MIL-101(Cr). The MIL-101(Cr) adsorbs a large amount of N₂ and generates sufficiently photogenerated electrons under sunlight irradiation, and electrons quickly transfer to the SiW₁₂ through hydrogen bonds. Moreover, the agglomeration effect of the homogeneous catalyst SiW₁₂ is weakened due to encapsulation with more exposed active sites. This work provides a feasible route to design and synthesize nanocomposite materials with exceptional performance for photocatalytic nitrogen fixation.

Fabrication of a polyoxotungstate/metal-organic framework/phosphorus-doped reduced graphene oxide nanohybrid modified glassy carbon electrode by electrochemical reduction and its electrochemical properties

Hybrid nanocomposites based on polyoxometalates (POMs), metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), and graphene oxide (GO) have a unique set of properties. They have specific properties such as high acidity, oxygen-rich surface, and good redox capability from POMs. In contrast, they do not have weaknesses of POMs such as a low surface area, and high solubility in aqueous media. Herein, a novel organic–inorganic nanohybrid compound based on H₃PW₁₂O₄₀ (PW₁₂), a Co-based MOF, and GO was prepared. The prepared hybrid nanocomposite (PW₁₂/MOF/GO) was characterized using different techniques. Then, a PW₁₂/MOF/GO nanocomposite modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was fabricated by the drop-casting method and next was dried at room temperature. Then, the PW₁₂/MOF/GO/GCE was subjected to electrochemical reduction at a constant potential of −1.5 V, in 0.1 M H₃PO₄ solution containing 0.10% w/v PW₁₂/MOF/GO additive. The morphology, electrochemical activity, and stability of the modified electrode (PW₁₂/MOF/P@ERGO/GCE) were studied with FE-SEM coupled with EDS, CV, and amperometry. The obtained results confirmed that the PW₁₂/MOF/P@ERGO/GCE could be effective in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The electrochemical activity of the PW₁₂/MOF/P@ERGO/GCE due to the desirable microstructure of the electrocatalyst (e.g. high active surface area and homogeneous distribution of the PW₁₂/MOF/P@ERGO), and also the synergistic effect of the blocks, is more than those of PW₁₂/GCE, MOF/GCE, PW₁₂/MOF/GCE, and P@ERGO/GCE. Moreover, the PW₁₂/MOF/P@ERGO/GCE showed an excellent long-term stability under the air atmosphere.

Fabrication of a modified glassy carbon electrode based on a polyoxotungstate/metal–organic framework/phosphorus-doped reduced graphene oxide nanohybrid.

MOF-enabled confinement and related effects for chemical catalyst presentation and utilization

A defining characteristic of nearly all catalytically functional MOFs is uniform, molecular-scale porosity. MOF pores, linkers and nodes that define them, help regulate reactant and product transport, catalyst siting, catalyst accessibility, catalyst stability, catalyst activity, co-catalyst proximity, composition of the chemical environment at and beyond the catalytic active site, chemical intermediate and transition-state conformations, thermodynamic affinity of molecular guests for MOF interior sites, framework charge and density of charge-compensating ions, pore hydrophobicity/hydrophilicity, pore and channel rigidity vs. flexibility, and other features and properties. Collectively and individually, these properties help define overall catalyst functional behaviour. This review focuses on how porous, catalyst-containing MOFs capitalize on molecular-scale confinement, containment, isolation, environment modulation, energy delivery, and mobility to accomplish desired chemical transformations with potentially superior selectivity or other efficacy, especially in comparison to catalysts in homogeneous solution environments.

Supramolecular assemblies of organo-functionalised hybrid polyoxometalates: from functional building blocks to hierarchical nanomaterials

This review provides a comprehensive overview of recent advances in the supramolecular organisation and hierarchical self-assembly of organo-functionalised hybrid polyoxometalates (hereafter referred to as hybrid POMs), and their emerging role as multi-functional building blocks in the construction of new nanomaterials. Polyoxometalates have long been studied as a fascinating outgrowth of traditional metal-oxide chemistry, where the unusual position they occupy between individual metal oxoanions and solid-state bulk oxides imbues them with a range of attractive properties (e.g. solubility, high structural modularity and tuneable properties/reactivity). Specifically, the capacity for POMs to be covalently coupled to an effectively limitless range of organic moieties has opened exciting new avenues in their rational design, while the combination of distinct organic and inorganic components facilitates the formation of complex molecular architectures and the emergence of new, unique functionalities. Here, we present a detailed discussion of the design opportunities afforded by hybrid POMs, where fine control over their size, topology and their covalent and non-covalent interactions with a range of other species and/or substrates makes them ideal building blocks in the assembly of a broad range of supramolecular hybrid nanomaterials. We review both direct self-assembly approaches (encompassing both solution and solid-state approaches) and the non-covalent interactions of hybrid POMs with a range of suitable substrates (including cavitands, carbon nanotubes and biological systems), while giving key consideration to the underlying driving forces in each case. Ultimately, this review aims to demonstrate the enormous potential that the rational assembly of hybrid POM clusters shows for the development of next-generation nanomaterials with applications in areas as diverse as catalysis, energy-storage and molecular biology, while providing our perspective on where the next major developments in the field may emerge.

Two-step preparation of Keggin-PW12@UIO-66 composite showing high-activity and long-life conversion of soybean oil into biodiesel

A polyoxometalate acid can be encapsulated into a metal-organic framework to construct a novel kind of solid-acid catalyst. In this work, the two-step method -high-temperature preparation of Zr₆O₄(OH)₄(CH₃COO)₁₂ and low-temperature self-assembly-has been adopted to synthesize the PW₁₂@UIO-66 composite (PW₁₂ = H₃PW₁₂O₄₀; UIO-66 = Zr₆O₄(OH)₄(OOC-C₆H₄-COO)₁₂). The as-synthesized PW₁₂@UIO-66 composite exhibits highly crystalline, good octahedron morphology, large specific surface area (1960 m² g^-1) and high thermal stability (>500 °C), which clearly demonstrates the potential as a solid-acid catalyst. Additionally, the PW₁₂@UIO-66 composite may be accomplished with 85% utilization of H₃PW₁₂O₄₀ and 95% yield through this synthetic procedure. The performances of the PW₁₂@UIO-66 composite are investigated by catalyzing the simultaneous transesterification and esterification of soybean oil into biodiesel. Under the optimal conditions, the conversion of the soybean oil into biodiesel would exceed 90% over the as-synthesized PW₁₂@UIO-66 composite. As the crucial indexes for industrial prospects, the recycling and life experiments were surveyed. After 10 times recycling and 4 weeks, the structure and performance of the PW₁₂@UIO-66 composite remained unchanged and in the meantime the PW₁₂@UIO-66 composite still maintained a high activity to convert soybean oil into biodiesel.

Effective Heterogeneous Oxidative Desulfurization Catalyzed by H3 PMo9 W3 O40 @rht-MOF-1

With the increasingly strict standard for sulfur content in fuel, it is necessary to develop high-efficiency catalyst for extractive and catalytic oxidative desulfurization systems (ECODS). Herein, a series of three remarkable complexes H₃ PMo_(12-n) W_n O₄₀ @rht-MOF-1 (1 a, n=1; 2 a, n=2; 3 a, n=3) have been designed and prepared. Complexes 1 a, 2 a and 3 a were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and FT-IR, PXRD, SEM, N₂ adsorption-desorption isotherms, etc. Upon complex 3 a was applied as catalyst, it exhibited remarkably high catalytic activity in the ECODS reactions of aromatic sulfur compounds under optimal conditions. On the basis of its excellent heterogeneity, the catalyst could be recycled for nine consecutive cycles without significant losing of activity centers. Then, the reaction kinetics and mechanism were investigated and the activation energy have been calculated and discussed. Further, the complex 3 a is employed to catalyze the ODS of commercial diesel oil. As a result, the desulfurization efficiency reached 90%. These results provided important structure data for study the structure-property relationship and potential heterogeneous catalyst applied in ODS in industry.

{BW12O40} Hybrids Modified by in Situ Synthesized Rigid Ligand with Supercapacitance and Photocatalytic Properties

Organic rigid ligand-modified polyoxometalate-based materials possess complex and diverse structures, promising electrochemical energy storage properties and outstanding photocatalytic capabilities. Hence, two new [BW₁₂O₄₀]^5-(abbreviated as {BW₁₂O₄₀})-based inorganic-organic hybrids [{Cu(en)₂(H₂O)}][{Cu(pdc)(en)}{Cu(en)₂}(BW₁₂O₄₀)]·2H₂O (1) and [{Cu^I₅(pz)₆(H₂O)₄}(BW₁₂O₄₀)] (2) (pdc = 2-picolinate, en = ethylenediamine, pz = pyrazine) were successfully synthesized through a hydrothermal method. Among them, pdc and pz were obtained by in situ transformation from 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylic acid (H₂ pydc) and 2,3-pyrazinedicarboxylic acid (H₂pzdc), respectively. In compound 1, the {BW₁₂O₄₀} clusters as an intermediate junction connect with {Cu(pdc)(en)}{Cu(en)₂} and {Cu(en)₂(H₂O)} to form monomers, which in turn form supramolecular chains, sheets, and space network via hydrogen bonding. The {BW₁₂O₄₀} clusters are packed into copper-pyrazine frameworks in compound 2, and a unique polyoxometalate-based metal organic frameworks (POMOFs) structure with a new topology of {12}₂{6.12³.14²}₂{6².12.14².18}{6².12³.16}{6}₆ is formed via covalent bonds. When used as electrode materials for supercapacitors, the values of specific capacitance are 651.56 F g^-1 for 1-GCE and 584.43 F g^-1 for 2-GCE at a current density of 2.16 A g^-1 and good cycling stability (90.94%, 94.81% of the initial capacity after 5000 cycles at 15.12 A g^-1, respectively). The kinetic analysis reveals that surface capacitance plays a major role. Furthermore, both compounds can effectively degrade Rhodamine B (RhB) and Methylene blue (MB), showing the outstanding photocatalytic performance.

Hierarchically Ordered Macro-Microporous Polyoxometalate-Based Metal-Organic Framework Single Crystals

Facile construction of ordered macroporous polyoxometalate-based metal-organic frameworks (POM@MOFs) to break the intrinsic microporous restriction is significant but remains challenging. On one hand, the POMs introduced improve the structural stability and modify the pores of MOFs, e.g., introducing functional catalytic and adsorptive units. Meanwhile, the acidic POMs severely affect the nucleation and growth of the POM@MOFs, resulting in complicated synthesis and difficult assembly control. Herein, a general approach has been developed to fabricate ordered macroporous POM@MOF single crystals, involving close-packed polystyrene (PS) nanosphere templates. The artificially selected polar solvents exerting strong solvent effect with POMs weaken the affinity between POMs and metal ions, thereby effectively stabilizing the precursors from assembly before filling into the PS template interstices. The weak alkaline carboxylate used regulates the in situ nucleation and growth of POM@MOFs through deprotonation of the ligands as well as coordinating modulation, affording a series of hierarchically cuboctahedral POM@MOF single crystals with ordered macropores (ca. 180 nm) and intrinsic micropores after template removal. The ordered macroporous structure and thinned microporous skeleton markedly improve mass diffusion properties, while the integral single-crystal lattice retains superior stability.

Efficient Conversion of Biomass-Derived Levulinic Acid to γ-Valerolactone over Polyoxometalate@Zr-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks: The Synergistic Effect of Bro̷nsted and Lewis Acidic Sites

Catalytic transformation of levulinic acid (LA) to γ-valerolactone (γ-GVL) is an important route for biomass upgradation. Because both Bro̷nsted and Lewis acidic sites are required in the cascade reaction, herein we fabricate a series of H₃PW₁₂O₄₀@Zr-based metal-organic framework (HPW@MOF-808) by a facile impregnation method. The synthesized HPW@MOF-808 is active for the conversion of LA to γ-GVL using isopropanol as a hydrogen donor. Interestingly, with the increase in the HPW loading amount, the yield of γ-GVL increases first and then decreases, and 14%-HPW@MOF-808 gave the highest γ-GVL yield (86%). The excellent catalytic performance was ascribed to the synergistic effect between the accessible Lewis acidic Zr⁴⁺ sites in MOF-808 and Bro̷nsted acidic HPW sites. Based on the experimental results, a plausible reaction mechanism was proposed: the Zr⁴⁺ sites catalyze the transfer hydrogenation of carbonyl groups and the HPW clusters promote the esterification of LA with isopropanol and lactonization to afford γ-GVL. Moreover, HPW@MOF-808 is resistant to leaching and can be reused for five cycles without significant loss of its catalytic activity.

Incorporation of Active Metal Species in Crystalline Porous Materials for Highly Efficient Synergetic Catalysis

The design and development of efficient catalytic materials with synergistic catalytic sites always has long been known to be a thrilling and very dynamic research field. Crystalline porous materials (CPMs) mainly including metal-organic frameworks and zeolites with high scientific and industrial impact have recently been the subject of extensive research due to their essential role in modern chemical industrial processes. The rational incorporation of guest species in CPMs can synergize the respective strengths of these components and allow them to collaborate with each other for synergistic catalysis, leading to enhanced catalytic activity, selectivity, and stability in a broad range of catalytic processes. In this review, the recent advances in the development of CPMs-confined active metal species, including metal nanoparticles, metal/metal oxides heteroparticles, metal oxide, subnanometric metal clusters, and polyoxometalates, for heterogeneous catalysis, with a particular focus on synergistic effects between active components that result in an enhanced performance are highlighted. Insights into catalysts design strategies, host-guest interactions, and structure-property relationships have been illustrated in detail. Finally, the existing challenges and possible development directions in CPMs-based encapsulation-structured synergistic catalysts are discussed.

Polyoxometalate-Incorporated Framework as a Heterogeneous Catalyst for Selective Oxidation of C-H Bonds of Alkylbenzenes

Developing new catalysts for highly efficient and selective oxidation of saturated C-H bonds is significant due to their thermodynamic strength. Via incorporation of PW₁₂O₄₀^3-, pyridine-2,5-dicarboxylic acids (pydc), and Fe(III) ions into one framework, a new polyoxometalate-based metal-organic framework, [HFe₄O₂(H₂O)₄(pydc)₃PW₁₂O₄₀]·10.5H₂O (FeW-PYDC), was successfully prepared by a hydrothermal method. Interestingly, FeW-PYDC features a three-dimensional porous structure with {Fe₄O₂} interconnecting with PW₁₂O₄₀^3- units. FeW-PYDC displayed excellent performance in the selective oxidation of C-H bonds of alkylbenzenes with high conversion (95.7%) and selectivity (96.6%). As an effective heterogeneous catalyst, FeW-PYDC demonstrates good reusability and structural stability.

Highly Efficient Synthesis of p-Benzoquinones Catalyzed by Robust Two-Dimensional POM-Based Coordination Polymers

Selective oxidation of alkyl-substituted phenols offers efficient access to p-benzoquinones (BQs) that serve as key components for synthesizing biologically active compounds, but rational manufacture of efficient recyclable catalysts for such a reaction remains a severe challenge. Herein, two crystalline 2D polyoxometalate-based coordination polymers (POMCPs), formulated as H₃[Cu^I₃(L)₃]₂[PM₁₂O₄₀]·xH₂O (M = Mo, x = 4 for 1; M = W, x = 6 for 2; and HL = 4-(1H-tetazol-5-yl)pyridine), are prepared by a mineralizer-assisted one-step synthesis strategy and explored as heterogeneous catalysts for p-BQs synthesis. Both compounds have been characterized through elemental analysis, EDS analysis, infrared spectroscopy, UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectrum, EPR, XPS, BET, single-crystal, and powder X-ray diffraction. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis indicates that both 1 and 2 exhibit an interesting 2D sheet structure composed of 2-connected Keggin type anions [PM₁₂O₄₀]^3- and hexa-nuclear {Cu^I₆(HL)₆} cluster-based metal-organic chains via Cu···O interactions. When used as catalysts, POMCPs 1 and 2 have excellent catalytic activities in the selective oxidation of substituted phenols to p-BQs with H₂O₂. Notedly, in the model reaction from 2,3,6-trimethylphenol (TMP) to the vitamin E key intermediate trimethyl-p-benzoquinone (TMBQ), the catalytic activities expressed by turnover frequency (TOF) of 1 and 2 can reach an unprecedented 2400 and 2000 h^-1, respectively, at close to 100% TMBQ yield. The truly heterogeneous nature, stability, and structural integrity of both catalysts were ascertained by FTIR, PXRD techniques, and the following cycles. Mechanism studies reveal that both catalysts can involve a dual reaction pathway through a heterolytic oxygen atom transfer mechanism and homolytic radical mechanism. Moreover, the 2D POMCPs with highly accessible bilateral active sites and efficient mass transfer efficiency possess superior catalytic performance to their analogous 3D species.

Template-Induced {Mn2}-Organic Framework with Lewis Acid-Base Canals as a Highly Efficient Heterogeneous Catalyst for Chemical Fixation of CO2 and Knoevenagel Condensation

The target for the self-assembly of functional microporous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) could be realized by employing ligand-directed and/or template-induced strategies, which prompted us to explore the synthetic technique of d¹⁰ secondary-building-unit-based nanoporous frameworks. Here, the exquisite combination of a paddle-wheel [Mn₂(CO₂)₆(OH₂)₂] cluster and a TDP^6- ligand contributes one robust honeycomb framework of {(Me₂NH₂)₂[Mn₂(TDP)(H₂O)₂]·3H₂O·3DMF}_n (NUC-31; DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide), whose activated state with the removal of associated aqueous molecules characterizes the outstanding physicochemical properties of nanochannels, penta- and tetracoordinated Mn²⁺ serving as highly open metal sites, rich Lewis base sites (rows of C═O groups and N_pyridine atoms), and excellent thermal stability. Moreover, it is worth mentioning that Lewis acid-base sites on the inner surface of the channels in activated NUC-31 successfully form one unprecedented canal-shaped acid-base confined space with evenly distributed open metal sites of Mn²⁺ and N_pyridine atoms as the canal bottom as well as two rows of C═O groups serving as dyke dams. Catalytic experiments displayed that activated NUC-31 could serve as an efficient heterogeneous catalyst for the chemical fixation of CO₂ with epoxides into cyclic carbonates under mild conditions. Furthermore, NUC-31 could effectively catalyze the reaction Knoevenagel condensation, which should be ascribed to the synergistic polarization effect aroused from its plentiful Lewis base sites in the confined channel space. Hence, these results demonstrate that the employment of ligand-directed and template-dependent strategies could overcome the self-assembled barriers of functional microporous MOFs and achieve unexpected frameworks.
