Diacetylene Linked Anthracene Oligomers Synthesized by One-Shot Homocoupling of Trimethylsilyl on Cu(111)

Probing charge redistribution at the interface of self-assembled cyclo-P5 pentamers on Ag(111)

Phosphorus pentamers (cyclo-P5) are unstable in nature but can be synthesized at the Ag(111) surface. Unlike monolayer black phosphorous, little is known about their electronic properties when in contact with metal electrodes, although this is crucial for future applications. Here, we characterize the atomic structure of cyclo-P5 assembled on Ag(111) using atomic force microscopy with functionalized tips and density functional theory. Combining force and tunneling spectroscopy, we find that a strong charge transfer induces an inward dipole moment at the cyclo-P5/Ag interface as well as the formation of an interface state. We probe the image potential states by field-effect resonant tunneling and quantify the increase of the local change of work function of 0.46 eV at the cyclo-P5 assembly. Our experimental approach suggest that the cyclo-P5/Ag interface has the characteristic ingredients of a p-type semiconductor-metal Schottky junction with potential applications in field-effect transistors, diodes, or solar cells.

Recent advances in organic molecule reactions on metal surfaces

Chemical reactions of organic molecules on metal surfaces have been intensively investigated in the past decades, where metals play the role of catalysts in many cases. In this review, first, we summarize recent works on spatial molecules, small H2O, O2, CO, CO2 molecules, and the molecules carrying silicon groups as the new trends of molecular candidates for on-surface chemistry applications. Then, we introduce spectroscopy and DFT study advances in on-surface reactions. Especially, in situ spectroscopy technologies, such as electron spectroscopy, force spectroscopy, X-ray photoemission spectroscopy, STM-induced luminescence, tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, temperature-programmed desorption spectroscopy, and infrared reflection adsorption spectroscopy, are important to confirm the occurrence of organic reactions and analyze the products. To understand the underlying mechanism, the DFT study provides detailed information about reaction pathways, conformational evolution, and organometallic intermediates. Usually, STM/nc-AFM topological images, in situ spectroscopy data, and DFT studies are combined to describe the mechanism behind on-surface organic reactions.

On-Surface Synthesis of Polyene-Linked Porphyrin Cooligomer

π-Conjugated molecules are viewed as fundamental components in forthcoming molecular nanoelectronics in which semiconducting functional units are linked to each other via metallic molecular wires. However, it is still challenging to construct such block cooligomers on the surface. Here, we present a synthesis of [18]-polyene-linked Zn-porphyrin cooligomers via a two-step reaction of the alkyl groups on Cu(111) and Cu(110). Nonyl groups (-C9H19) substituted at the 5,15-meso positions of Zn-porphyrin were first transformed to alkenyl groups (-C9H10) by dehydrogenation. Subsequently, homocoupling of the terminal -CH2 groups resulted in the formation of extended [18]-polyene-linked porphyrin cooligomers. The structures of the products at each reaction step were investigated by bond-resolved scanning tunneling microscopy at low temperatures. A combination of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations revealed the metallic property of the all trans [18]-polyene linker on Cu(110). This finding may provide an approach to fabricate complex nanocarbon structures on the surface.

Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy Investigation of Au-bis-acetylide Networks on Au(111): The Influence of Metal-Organic Hybridization

Graphdiyne (GDY) is an appealing two-dimensional carbon material, but the on-surface synthesis of a single layer remains challenging. Demetalation of well-crystalline metal acetylide networks, though in its infancy, provides a new avenue to on-surface synthesized GDY substructures. In spite of the synthetic efforts and theoretical concerns, there are few reports steeped in elaborate characterization of the electronic influence of metalation. In this context, we focused on the surface supported Au-bis-acetylide network, which underwent demetalation after further annealing to form hydrogen-substituted GDY. We made a comprehensive study on the geometric structure and electronic structure and the corresponding demetalized structure on Au(111) through STM, noncontact atomic force microscopy (nc-AFM), scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS), and density functional theory (DFT) simulations. The bandgap of the Au-bis-acetylide network on Au(111) is measured to be 2.7 eV, while the bandgap of a fully demetalized Au-bis-acetylide network is estimated to be about 4.1 eV. Our findings reveal that the intercalated Au adatoms are positioned closer to the metal surface compared with the organic skeletons, facilitating electronic hybridization between the surface state and unoccupied frontier molecular orbitals of organic components. This leads to an extended conjugation through Au-bis-acetylene bonds, resulting in a reduced bandgap.

On-Surface Synthesis of Silole and Disila-Cyclooctene Derivatives

The incorporation of Si atoms into organic compounds significantly increases a variety of functionality, facilitating further applications. Recently, on-surface synthesis was introduced into organosilicon chemistry as 1,4-disilabenzene bridged nanostructures were obtained via coupling between silicon atoms and brominated phenyl groups at the ortho position on Au(111). Here, we demonstrate a high generality of this strategy via syntheses of silole derivatives and nanoribbon structures with eight-membered sila-cyclic rings from dibrominated molecules at the bay and peri positions on Au(111), respectively. Their structures and electronic properties were investigated by a combination of scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations. This work demonstrates a great potential to deal with heavy group 14 elements in on-surface silicon chemistry.

Dramatic Acceleration of the Hopf Cyclization on Gold(111): From Enediynes to Peri-Fused Diindenochrysene Graphene Nanoribbons

Hopf et al. reported the high-temperature 6π-electrocyclization of cis-hexa-1,3-diene-5-yne to benzene in 1969. Subsequent studies using this cyclization have been limited by its very high reaction barrier. Here, we show that the reaction barrier for two model systems, (E)-1,3,4,6-tetraphenyl-3-hexene-1,5-diyne (1a) and (E)-3,4-bis(4-iodophenyl)-1,6-diphenyl-3-hexene-1,5-diyne (1b), is decreased by nearly half on a Au(111) surface. We have used scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and noncontact atomic force microscopy (nc-AFM) to monitor the Hopf cyclization of enediynes 1a,b on Au(111). Enediyne 1a undergoes two sequential, quantitative Hopf cyclizations, first to naphthalene derivative 2, and finally to chrysene 3. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that a gold atom from the Au(111) surface is involved in all steps of this reaction and that it is crucial to lowering the reaction barrier. Our findings have important implications for the synthesis of novel graphene nanoribbons. Ullmann-like coupling of enediyne 1b at 20 °C on Au(111), followed by a series of Hopf cyclizations and aromatization reactions at higher temperatures, produces nanoribbons 12 and 13. These results show for the first time that graphene nanoribbons can be synthesized on a Au(111) surface using the Hopf cyclization mechanism.

The role of aromaticity in the cyclization and polymerization of alkyne-substituted porphyrins on Au(111)

Aromaticity is an established and widely used concept for the prediction of the reactivity of organic molecules. However, its role remains largely unexplored in on-surface chemistry, where the interaction with the substrate can alter the electronic and geometric structure of the adsorbates. Here we investigate how aromaticity affects the reactivity of alkyne-substituted porphyrin molecules in cyclization and coupling reactions on a Au(111) surface. We examine and quantify the regioselectivity in the reactions by scanning tunnelling microscopy and bond-resolved atomic force microscopy at the single-molecule level. Our experiments show a substantially lower reactivity of carbon atoms that are stabilized by the aromatic diaza[18]annulene pathway of free-base porphyrins. The results are corroborated by density functional theory calculations, which show a direct correlation between aromaticity and thermodynamic stability of the reaction products. These insights are helpful to understand, and in turn design, reactions with aromatic species in on-surface chemistry and heterogeneous catalysis.

On-surface synthesis of nitrogen-doped nanographene with an [18]annulene pore on Ag(111)

On-surface synthesis is of importance to fabricate low dimensional carbon-based nanomaterials with atomic precision. Here, we synthesize nitrogen-doped nanographene with an [18]annulene pore and its dimer through sequential reactions of debromination, aryl-aryl coupling, cyclodehydrogenation and C-N coupling on Ag(111) from 3,12-dibromo-7,8-diaza[5]helicene. The inner structures of the products were characterized with scanning tunneling microscopy with a CO terminated tip at low temperature. Furthermore, the first four unoccupied electronic states of the nanographene were investigated with a combination of scanning tunneling spectroscopy and theoretical calculations. Except for the LUMO + 2 state observed at +1.3 V, the electronic states at 500 mV, 750 mV and 1.9 V were attributed to the superatom molecular orbitals at the [18]annulene pore, which were significantly shifted towards the Fermi level due to the hybridization with the confined surface state.

Highly Selective On-Surface Reactions of Aryl Propiolic Acids via Decarboxylative Coupling

Aryl propiolic acids are introduced as a new class of monomers in the field of on-surface chemistry to build up poly(arylenebutadiynylenes) through decarboxylative Glaser coupling. As compared to aryl alkynes that are routinely used in the on-surface Glaser coupling, it is found that the decarboxylative coupling occurs at slightly lower temperature and with excellent selectivity. Activation occurs through decarboxylation for the propiolic acids, whereas the classical Glaser coupling is achieved through alkyne CH activation, and this process shows poor selectivity. The efficiency of the decarboxylative coupling is documented by the successful polymerization of bis(propiolic acids) as monomers. It is also found that the new activation mode is compatible with aryl bromide functionalities, which allows the formation of unsymmetric metal-organic polymers on the surface by chemoselective sequential reactions. All transformations are analyzed by a scanning tunneling microscope and are further studied by density functional theory calculations.

Non-covalent interactions (NCIs) in π-conjugated functional materials: advances and perspectives

The design and development of functional materials with real-life applications are highly demanding. Understanding and controlling inter- and intra-molecular interactions provide opportunities to design new materials. A judicious manipulation of the molecular structure significantly alters such interactions and can boost selected properties and functions of the material. There is burgeoning evidence of the beneficial effects of non-covalent interactions (NCIs), showing that manipulating NCIs may generate functional materials with a wide variety of physical properties leading to applications in catalysis, drug delivery, crystal engineering, etc. This prompted us to review the implications of NCIs on the molecular packing, optical properties, and applications of functional π-conjugated materials. To this end, this tutorial review will cover different types of interactions (electrostatic, π-interactions, metallophilic, etc.) and their impact on π-conjugated materials. Attempts have also been made to delineate the effects of weak interactions on opto-electronic (O-E) applications.

On-surface synthesis of disilabenzene-bridged covalent organic frameworks

Substituting carbon with silicon in organic molecules and materials has long been an attractive way to modify their electronic structure and properties. Silicon-doped graphene-based materials are known to exhibit exotic properties, yet conjugated organic materials with atomically precise Si substitution have remained difficult to prepare. Here we present the on-surface synthesis of one- and two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks whose backbones contain 1,4-disilabenzene (C₄Si₂) linkers. Silicon atoms were first deposited on a Au(111) surface, forming a AuSi_x film on annealing. The subsequent deposition and annealing of a bromo-substituted polyaromatic hydrocarbon precursor (triphenylene or pyrene) on this surface led to the formation of the C₄Si₂-bridged networks, which were characterized by a combination of high-resolution scanning tunnelling microscopy and photoelectron spectroscopy supported by density functional theory calculations. Each Si in a hexagonal C₄Si₂ ring was found to be covalently linked to one terminal Br atom. For the linear structure obtained with the pyrene-based precursor, the C₄Si₂ rings were converted into C₄Si pentagonal siloles by further annealing.

Steric hindrance in the on-surface synthesis of diethynyl-linked anthracene polymers

Hybrid sp-sp² structures can be efficiently obtained on metal substrates via on-surface synthesis. The choice of both the precursor and the substrate impacts on the effectiveness of the process and the stability of the formed structures. Here we demonstrate that using anthracene-based precursor molecules on Au(111) the formation of polymers hosting sp carbon chains is affected by the steric hindrance between aromatic groups. In particular, by scanning tunneling microscopy experiments and density functional theory simulations we show that the de-metalation of organometallic structures induces a lateral separation of adjacent polymers that prevents the formation of ordered domains. This study contributes to the understanding of the mechanisms driving the on-surface synthesis processes, a fundamental step toward the realization of novel carbon-based nanostructures with perspective applications in nanocatalysis, photoconversion, and nano-electronics.

Desilylative Coupling Involving C(sp2)-Si Bond Cleavage on Metal Surfaces

Desilylative coupling involving C-Si bond cleavage has emerged as one of the most important synthetic strategies for carbon-carbon/heteroatom bond formation in solution chemistry. However, in on-surface chemistry, C-Si bond cleavage remains a synthetic challenge. Here, we report the implementation of C(sp²)-Si bond cleavage and subsequent C-C bond formation on metal surfaces. The combination of scanning tunneling microscopy and density functional theory calculation successfully reveals that the incorporation of the C-Br group on the arylsilanes is critical to the success of this desilylative coupling reaction on metal surfaces. Our study represents a promising approach for the removal of protecting silyl groups in on-surface chemistry.

Depositing Molecular Graphene Nanoribbons on Ag(111) by Electrospray Controlled Ion Beam Deposition: Self-Assembly and On-Surface Transformations

The chemical processing of low-dimensional carbon nanostructures is crucial for their integration in future devices. Here we apply a new methodology in atomically precise engineering by combining multistep solution synthesis of N-doped molecular graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) with mass-selected ultra-high vacuum electrospray controlled ion beam deposition on surfaces and real-space visualisation by scanning tunnelling microscopy. We demonstrate how this method yields solely a controllable amount of single, otherwise unsublimable, GNRs of 2.9 nm length on a planar Ag(111) surface. This methodology allows for further processing by employing on-surface synthesis protocols and exploiting the reactivity of the substrate. Following multiple chemical transformations, the GNRs provide reactive building blocks to form extended, metal-organic coordination polymers.

Controlling Localized Plasmons via an Atomistic Approach: Attainment of Site-Selective Activation inside a Single Molecule

Chemical reactions such as bond dissociation and formation assisted by localized surface plasmons (LSPs) of noble metal nanostructures hold promise in solar-to-chemical energy conversion. However, the precise control of localized plasmons to activate a specific moiety of a molecule, in the presence of multiple chemically equivalent parts within a single molecule, is scarce due to the relatively large lateral distribution of the plasmonic field. Herein, we report the plasmon-assisted dissociation of a specific molecular site (C-Si bond) within a polyfunctional molecule adsorbed on a Cu(100) surface in the scanning tunneling microscope (STM) junction. The molecular site to be activated can be selected by carefully positioning the tip and bringing the tip extremely close to the molecule (atomistic approach), thereby achieving plasmonic nanoconfinement at the tip apex. Furthermore, multiple reactive sites are activated in a sequential manner at the sub-molecular scale, and different sets of products are created and visualized by STM topography and density functional theory (DFT) modeling. The illustration of site-selective activation achieved by localized surface plasmons implies the realization of molecular-scale resolution for bond-selected plasmon-induced chemistry.

On-Surface Synthesis of Porphyrin-Complex Multi-Block Co-Oligomers by Defluorinative Coupling

On-surface chemical reaction has become a very powerful technique to synthesize nanostructures by linking small molecules in the bottom-up approach. Given the fact that most reactants are simultaneously activated at certain temperatures, a sequential reaction in a controlled way has remained challenging. Here, we present an on-surface synthesis of multi-block co-oligomers from trifluoromethyl (CF₃ ) substituted porphyrin metal complexes. The oligomerization on Au(111) is demonstrated with a combination of bond-resolved scanning probe microscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Even after the first oligomerization of single monomer unit, the termini of the oligomer keep the CF₃ group, which can be used as a reactant for further coupling in a sequential order. Consequently, copper, cobalt, and palladium complexes of bisanthracene-fused porphyrin oligomers were linked with each other in a designed order.

On-surface synthesis of organocopper metallacycles through activation of inner diacetylene moieties

The design of organometallic complexes is at the heart of modern organic chemistry and catalysis. Recently, on-surface synthesis has emerged as a disruptive paradigm to design previously precluded compounds and nanomaterials. Despite these advances, the field of organometallic chemistry on surfaces is still at its infancy. Here, we introduce a protocol to activate the inner diacetylene moieties of a molecular precursor by copper surface adatoms affording the formation of unprecedented organocopper metallacycles on Cu(111). The chemical structure of the resulting complexes is characterized by scanning probe microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, being complemented by density functional theory calculations and scanning probe microscopy simulations. Our results pave avenues to the engineering of organometallic compounds and steer the development of polyyne chemistry on surfaces.

The diacetylene skeletons of DNBD precursors are attacked on Cu(111) by copper adatoms resulting in the synthesis of organocopper metallacycles.

Head-to-Tail Oligomerization by Silylene-Tethered Sonogashira Coupling on Ag(111)

On-surface synthesis is a powerful method for the fabrication of π-conjugated nanomaterials. Herein, we demonstrate chemoselective Sonogashira coupling between (trimethylsilyl)ethynyl and chlorophenyl groups in silylethynyl- and chloro-substituted partially fluorinated phenylene ethynylenes (SiCPFPEs) on Ag(111). The desilylative Sonogashira coupling occurred with high chemoselectivity up to 75 %, while the competing Ullmann and desilylative Glaser homocoupling reactions were suppressed. A combination of bond-resolved scanning tunneling microscopy/atomic force microscopy (STM/AFM) and DFT calculations revealed that the oligomers were obtained by the formation of intermolecular silylene tethers (-Me₂ Si-) through CH₃ -Si bond activation at 130 °C and subsequent elimination of the tethers at an elevated temperature of 200 °C.

Surface-assisted fabrication of low-dimensional carbon-based nanoarchitectures

On-surface synthesis, as an alternative to traditional in-solution synthesis, has become an emerging research field and attracted extensive attention over the past decade due to its ability to fabricate nanoarchitectures with exotic properties. Compared to wet chemistry, the on-surface synthesis conducted on atomically flat solid surfaces under ultrahigh vacuum exhibits unprecedented characteristics and advantages, opening novel reaction pathways for chemical synthesis. Various low-dimensional nanostructures have been fabricated on solid surfaces (mostly metal surfaces) based on this newly developed approach. This paper reviews the classic and latest works regarding carbon-based low-dimensional nanostructures since the arrival of on-surface synthesis era. These nanostructures are categorized into zero-, one- and two-dimensional classes and each class is composed of numerous sub-nanostructures. For certain specific nanostructures, comprehensive reports are given, including precursor design, substrate choice, synthetic strategies and so forth. We hope that our review will shed light on the fabrication of some significant nanostructures in this young and promising scientific area.

Heterocyclic Ring-Opening of Nanographene on Au(111)

Cyclo-dehydrogenation is of importance to induce the planarization of molecules on noble surfaces upon annealing. In contrast to a number of successful syntheses of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons by forming carbon-carbon bonds, it is still rare to conduct conjugation and cleavage of carbon-nitrogen bonds in molecules. Here, we present a systematic transformation of the C-N bonds in11,11,12,12-tetraphenyl-1,4,5,8-tetraazaanthraquinodimethane as well as three other derivatives on Au(111). With bond-resolved scanning tunneling microscopy, we discovered novel the "heterocyclic segregation" reaction of one pyrazine ring with two nitrogen atoms to form two quinoline rings with one nitrogen each. Density functional theory calculations showed that the intramolecular ring-forming and -opening of N-heterocycles are strongly affected by the initial hydrogen-substrate interaction.

Polymerization of silanes through dehydrogenative Si-Si bond formation on metal surfaces

Element-element double bonds of group 14 elements can be formed in solution, but generally only by applying harsh reductive conditions using sterically highly shielded tetryl halides as precursors. The two-dimensional confinement in surface-assisted polymerization represents a valuable alternative to access such reactive compounds, as it allows shielding of the labile entities without requiring bulky residues and catalytic activation of the reactive groups. Here, we demonstrate Si-Si bond formation in on-surface chemistry. Polymerization upon multiple Si-H bond dissociation and subsequent Si-Si bond formation was achieved on Au(111) and Cu(111) surfaces by using two different monomers, each containing two silicon functional groups (CH₃SiH₂ or SiH₃) attached to an aromatic backbone, leading to polymeric disilenes that interact with the surface. A combination of experimental and theoretical studies corroborates the formation of covalent Si-Si bonds between the long, highly ordered polymer chains with high diastereoselectivity. The reactive Si=Si bonds formally generated via double dehydrogenative coupling are stabilized via covalent Si-surface interaction.

On-Surface Synthesis and Molecular Engineering of Carbon-Based Nanoarchitectures

On-surface synthesis via covalent coupling of adsorbed precursor molecules on metal surfaces has emerged as a promising strategy for the design and fabrication of novel organic nanoarchitectures with unique properties and potential applications in nanoelectronics, optoelectronics, spintronics, catalysis, etc. Surface-chemistry-driven molecular engineering (i.e., bond cleavage, linkage, and rearrangement) by means of thermal activation, light irradiation, and tip manipulation plays critical roles in various on-surface synthetic processes, as exemplified by the work from the Ernst group in a prior issue of ACS Nano. In this Perspective, we highlight recent advances in and discuss the outlook for on-surface syntheses and molecular engineering of carbon-based nanoarchitectures.

Tailoring topological order and π-conjugation to engineer quasi-metallic polymers

Topological band theory predicts that a topological electronic phase transition between two insulators must proceed via closure of the electronic gap. Here, we use this transition to circumvent the instability of metallic phases in π-conjugated one-dimensional (1D) polymers. By means of density functional theory, tight-binding and GW calculations, we predict polymers near the topological transition from a trivial to a non-trivial quantum phase. We then use on-surface synthesis with custom-designed precursors to make polymers consisting of 1D linearly bridged acene moieties, which feature narrow bandgaps and in-gap zero-energy edge states when in the topologically non-trivial phase close to the topological transition point. We also reveal the fundamental connection between topological classes and resonant forms of 1D π-conjugated polymers.

Bond-Scission-Induced Structural Transformation from Cumulene to Diyne Moiety and Formation of Semiconducting Organometallic Polyyne

The structural transformation from symmetric cumulene to broken-symmetry polyyne within a one-dimensional (1-D) atomic carbon chain is a signature of Peierls distortion. Direct observation of such a structural transformation with single-bond resolution is, however, still challenging. Herein, we design a molecule with a cumulene moiety (Br₂C═C═C═CBr₂) and employ STM tip manipulation to achieve the molecular skeleton rearrangement from a cumulene to a diyne moiety (Br-C≡C-C≡C-Br). Furthermore, by an on-surface reaction strategy, thermally induced entire debromination (:C═C═C═C:) leads to the formation of a 1-D organometallic polyyne (-C≡C-C≡C-Au-) with a semiconducting characteristic, which implies that a Peierls-like transition may occur in a rationally designed molecular system with limited length.

Three-dimensional graphene nanoribbons as a framework for molecular assembly and local probe chemistry

Recent advances in state-of-the-art probe microscopy allow us to conduct single molecular chemistry via tip-induced reactions and direct imaging of the inner structure of the products. Here, we synthesize three-dimensional graphene nanoribbons by on-surface chemical reaction and take advantage of tip-induced assembly to demonstrate their capability as a playground for local probe chemistry. We show that the radical caused by tip-induced debromination can be reversibly terminated by either a bromine atom or a fullerene molecule. The experimental results combined with theoretical calculations pave the way for sequential reactions, particularly addition reactions, by a local probe at the single-molecule level decoupled from the surface.

On-Surface Reactive Planarization of Pt(II) Complexes

A series of Pt(II) complexes with tetradentate luminophores has been designed, synthesized, and deposited on coinage metal surfaces with the aim to produce highly planar self‐assembled monolayers. Low‐temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal a significant initial nonplanarity for all complexes. A subsequent metal‐catalyzed separation of the nonplanar moiety at the bridging unit via the scission of a C−N bond is observed, leaving behind a largely planar core complex. The activation barrier of this bond scission process is found to depend strongly on the chemical nature of both bridging group and coordination plane, and to increase from Cu(111) through Ag(111) to Au(111).

Reaction selectivity of homochiral versus heterochiral intermolecular reactions of prochiral terminal alkynes on surfaces

Controlling selectivity between homochiral and heterochiral reaction pathways on surfaces remains a great challenge. Here, competing reactions of a prochiral alkyne on Ag(111): two-dimensional (2D) homochiral Glaser coupling and heterochiral cross-coupling with a Bergman cyclization step have been examined. We demonstrate control strategies in steering the reactions between the homochiral and heterochiral pathways by tuning the precursor substituents and the kinetic parameters, as confirmed by high-resolution scanning probe microscopy (SPM). Control experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the template effect of organometallic chains obtained under specific kinetic conditions enhances Glaser coupling between homochiral molecules. In contrast, for the reaction of free monomers, the kinetically favorable reaction pathway is the cross-coupling between two heterochiral molecules (one of them involving cyclization). This work demonstrates the application of kinetic control to steer chiral organic coupling pathways at surfaces.

Controlling selectivity between homochiral and heterochiral reaction pathways on surfaces is intriguing but challenging. Here, the authors demonstrate strategies in steering the reactions of prochiral terminal alkynes between the homochiral and heterochiral pathways by tuning the precursor substituents and the kinetic parameters.

On-Surface Synthesis within a Porphyrin Nanoring Template

On-surface synthesis provides a route for the production of 1D and 2D covalently bonded polymeric structures. Such reactions are confined to the surface of a substrate and the catalytic properties of the substrate are often utilised to initiate the reaction. Recent studies have focused on the properties of various crystallographic planes of metallic substrates, as well as native surface features such as step-edges, in an effort to provide control over the pathway of the reaction and the resultant products. An alternative approach is to template the catalytic surface with a porous molecular overlayer; giving rise to well-defined surface regions within which an on-surface reaction may be confined. Here we present a methodology where macromolecular templates are used to confine an on-surface reaction. Cyclic porphyrin polymers, nanorings - consisting of 40 porphyrin units with internal diameter 13 nm, are used to form a template on a Au(111) surface, and an on-surface Ullmann-type coupling reaction is initiated within the nanoring template. The surface confined template and covalently coupled reaction products are investigated and characterised with scanning tunnelling microscopy.

On-Surface Synthesis of Ethynylene-Bridged Anthracene Polymers

Engineering low-band-gap π-conjugated polymers is a growing area in basic and applied research. The main synthetic challenge lies in the solubility of the starting materials, which precludes advancements in the field. Here, we report an on-surface synthesis protocol to overcome such difficulties and produce poly(p-anthracene ethynylene) molecular wires on Au(111). To this aim, a quinoid anthracene precursor with =CBr2 moieties is deposited and annealed to 400 K, resulting in anthracene-based polymers. High-resolution nc-AFM measurements confirm the nature of the ethynylene-bridge bond between the anthracene moieties. Theoretical simulations illustrate the mechanism of the chemical reaction, highlighting three major steps: dehalogenation, diffusion of surface-stabilized carbenes, and homocoupling, which enables the formation of an ethynylene bridge. Our results introduce a novel chemical protocol to design π-conjugated polymers based on oligoacene precursors and pave new avenues for advancing the emerging field of on-surface synthesis.
