The Manganese-Bone Connection: Investigating the Role of Manganese in Bone Health

The complex relationship between trace elements and skeletal health has received increasing attention in the scientific community. Among these minerals, manganese (Mn) has emerged as a key element affecting bone metabolism and integrity. This review examines the multifaceted role of Mn in bone health, including its effects on bone regeneration, mineralization, and overall skeletal strength. This review article is based on a synthesis of experimental models, epidemiologic studies, and clinical trials of the mechanisms of the effect of Mn on bone metabolism. Current research data show that Mn is actively involved in the processes of bone remodeling by modulating the activity of osteoblasts and osteoclasts, as well as the main cells that regulate bone formation and resorption. Mn ions have a profound effect on bone mineralization and density by intricately regulating signaling pathways and enzymatic reactions in these cells. Additionally, Mn superoxide dismutase (MnSOD), located in bone mitochondria, plays a crucial role in osteoclast differentiation and function, protecting osteoclasts from oxidative damage. Understanding the nuances of Mn's interaction with bone is essential for optimizing bone strategies, potentially preventing and managing skeletal diseases. Key findings include the stimulation of osteoblast proliferation and differentiation, the inhibition of osteoclastogenesis, and the preservation of bone mass through the RANK/RANKL/OPG pathway. These results underscore the importance of Mn in maintaining bone health and highlight the need for further research into its therapeutic potential.

Fluorescent MnO2@DEHP Nanoprobe for Rapid and Selective Detection of Fe(III) ions

Particle extraction via the liquid-liquid interface (PELLI) method has been utilized to produce Di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate (DEHP) coated MnO2 fluorescent nanoprobe denoted as MnO2@DEHP for the selective detection of Fe3+ ions. The synthesized MnO2@DEHP nanoprobe was characterized by various instrumental techniques such as FT-IR, PXRD, TEM, EDAX, HRTEM, DLS, and XPS. Since the high concentration of Fe3+ in waste water leads to water pollution, which in turn affects the ecosystem, and causes severe health hazards. Therefore, accurate detection of Fe3+ ions in the aqueous systems is essential as they are involved in various chemical and biological processes in living things. Here, the synthesized MnO2@DEHP nanoprobe selectively detects Fe3+ ions in the presence of various metal ions in an aqueous media by fluorescence quenching (turn-off) mechanism. The limit of detection (LOD) of MnO2@DEHP nanoprobe for Fe3+ was found to be 0.49 µM. The test-strip method and real water sample analysis were also used to demonstrate the viability of MnO2@DEHP as a fluorescent nanoprobe to detect Fe3+ ions visually and in environment monitoring applications.

Pharmacokinetic and molecular docking studies to pyrimidine drug using Mn3O4 nanoparticles to explore potential anti-Alzheimer activity

Alzheimer disease (AD) is the cause of dementia and accounts for 60-80% cases. Tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha (TNF-α) is a multifunctional cytokine that provides resistance to infections, inflammation, and cancer. It developed as a prospective therapeutic target against multiple autoimmune and inflammatory disorders. Cholinergic insufficiency is linked to Alzheimer's disease, and several cholinesterase inhibitors have been created to treat it, including naturally produced inhibitors, synthetic analogs, and hybrids. In the current study, we tried to prepared compounds may also support the discovery and development of novel therapeutic and preventative drugs for Alzheimer's using manganese tetroxide nanoparticles (Mn3O4-NPs) as a catalyst to generate compounds with excellent reaction conditions. The Biginelli synthesis yields 4-(4-cyanophenyl)-6-oxo-2-thioxohexahydropyrimidine-5-carbonitrile when the 4-cyanobenzaldehyde, ethyl cyanoacetate, and thiourea were coupled with Mn3O4-NPs to produce compound 1. This multi-component method is non-toxic, safe, and environmentally friendly. The new approach reduced the amount of chemicals used and preserved time. Compound 1 underwent reactions with methyl iodide, acrylonitrile, chloroacetone, ethyl chloroacetate, and chloroacetic acid/benzaldehyde, each of the synthetized compounds was docked with TNF-α converting enzyme. These compounds may also support the discovery and development of novel therapeutic and preventative drugs for Alzheimer's disease. The majority of the produced compounds demonstrated pharmacokinetic features, making them potentially attractive therapeutic candidates for Alzheimer's disease treatment.

Ammonium Ion-Pre-Intercalated MnO2 on Carbon Cloth for High-Energy Density Asymmetric Supercapacitors

With the continuous development of green energy, society is increasingly demanding advanced energy storage devices. Manganese-based asymmetric supercapacitors (ASCs) can deliver high energy density while possessing high power density. However, the structural instability hampers the wider application of manganese dioxide in ASCs. A novel MnO2-based electrode material was designed in this study. We synthesized a MnO2/carbon cloth electrode, CC@NMO, with NH4+ ion pre-intercalation through a one-step hydrothermal method. The pre-intercalation of NH4+ stabilizes the MnO2 interlayer structure, expanding the electrode stable working potential window to 0-1.1 V and achieving a remarkable mass specific capacitance of 181.4 F g-1. Furthermore, the ASC device fabricated using the CC@NMO electrode and activated carbon electrode exhibits excellent electrochemical properties. The CC@NMO//AC achieves a high energy density of 63.49 Wh kg-1 and a power density of 949.8 W kg-1. Even after cycling 10,000 times at 10 A g-1, the device retains 81.2% of its capacitance. This work sheds new light on manganese dioxide-based asymmetric supercapacitors and represents a significant contribution for future research on them.

Application of manganese oxide-based materials for arsenic removal: A review

In the context of growing arsenic (As) contamination in the world, there is an urgent need for an effective treatment approach to remove As from the environment. Industrial wastewater is one of the primary sources of As contamination, which poses significant risks to both microorganisms and human health, as the presence of As can disrupt the vital processes and synthesis of crucial macromolecules in living organisms. The global apprehension regarding As presence in aquatic environments persists as a key environmental issue. This review summarizes the recent advances and progress in the design, strategy, and synthesis method of various manganese-based adsorbent materials for As removal. Occurrence, removal, oxidation mechanism of As(III), As adsorption on manganese oxide (MnOx)-based materials, and influence of co-existing solutes are also discussed. Furthermore, the existing knowledge gaps of MnOx-based adsorbent materials and future research directions are proposed. This review provides a reference for the application of MnOx-based adsorbent materials to As removal.

Superior Cyclic Stability and Capacitive Performance of Cation- and Water Molecule-Preintercalated δ-MnO2/h-WO3 Nanostructures as Supercapacitor Electrodes

The large number of active sites in the layered structure of δ-MnO2 with considerable interlayer spacing makes it an excellent candidate for ion storage. Unfortunately, the δ-MnO2-based electrode has not yet attained the exceptional storage potential that it should demonstrate because of disappointing structural deterioration during periodic charging and discharging. Here, we represent that stable Na ion storage in δ-MnO2 may be triggered by the preintercalation of K ions and water molecules. Furthermore, the sluggish reaction kinetics and poor electrical conductivity of preintercalated δ-MnO2 layers are overcome by the incorporation of h-WO3 in the preintercalated δ-MnO2 to form novel composite electrodes. The composites contain mixed valence metals, which provide a great number of active sites along with improved redox activity, while maintaining a fast ion transfer efficiency to enhance the pseudocapacitance performance. Based on our research, the composite prepared from preintercalated δ-MnO2 with 5 wt % h-WO3 provides a specific capacitance of up to 363.8 F g-1 at a current density of 1.5 A g-1 and an improved energy density (32.3 W h kg-1) along with an ∼14% increase in capacity upon cycling up to 5000 cycles. Hence, the interaction between the preintercalated δ-MnO2 and h-WO3 nanorods results in satisfactory energy storage performance due to the defect-rich structure, high conductivity, superior stability, and lower charge transfer resistance. This research has the potential to pave the way for a new class of hybrid supercapacitors that could fill the energy gap between chemical batteries and ideal capacitors.

Reversible MnO to Mn3 O4 Oxidation in Manganese Oxide Nanoparticles

Manganese is an attractive element for sustainable solutions. It is largely available in the earth's crust, making it ideal for cost-effective and large-scale applications. Especially MnO nanoparticles have recently received attention for applications in battery technology. However, manganese has many oxidation states that are energetically very similar, indicating that they may easily transform from one to the other. Herein, the reversible oxidation of MnO nanoparticles to Mn3 O4 studied with in situ transmission electron microscopy is shown. The oxygen sublattices of MnO and Mn3 O4 are found to be perfectly aligned, and an atomic mechanism where the transformation is facilitated by the migration of Mn cations on the shared O sublattice is proposed. Even when protected with an amorphous carbon layer, MnO particles are highly unstable and oxidize to Mn3 O4 in ethanol. The poor stability of MnO lacks discussion in many battery-related works, and strategies aimed at avoiding this should be developed.

Comparative investigation of the catalytic application of α/β/γ-MnO2 nanoparticles synthesized by green and chemical approaches

Three phases (α, β, and γ) of manganese dioxide (MnO2) are successfully stabilized in a single entity for the first time. For this purpose, Citrullus colocynthis (bitter apple) extract is used as a natural surfactant in green synthesis. MnO2 nanoparticles were synthesized in the presence and absence of plant extracts under the same conditions. The morphology of both products is analysed by SEM and STEM to understand the role of plant extract in controlling the morphology of particles. The crystallinity and composition are analysed by XRD and confirmed that the product is composed of multiple phases α, β, and γ. The reduction of dyes and nitroarenes is studied using MnO2 nanoparticles (green and chemical products) as catalysts. The apparent rate constant, a percentage reduction, time reduction and reduced concentration compare the activities of both catalysts. After comparative data analysis, the catalytic reduction of picric acid is found fastest among all the substrates. All the results are analysed based on structure, functional group and affinity towards catalysts.

Interface modulation of Mn-N4-C with optimized oxygen-containing functional groups for highly efficient mercury adsorption

To achieve enhanced capture performance of industrial gaseous mercury pollution in heterogeneous reactions, the directed construction of an active reaction interface is particularly critical. Here, we developed atomically dispersed manganese confined within a carbon framework doped with heteroatoms (Mn-N4-C) for strengthening the adsorption of elemental mercury at the interface. The results demonstrate that the adsorption performance of Mn-N4-C is primarily determined by the surrounding coordination environment of individual metal sites. Due to the unique axial-coordination microenvironment, Mn-N4-C with abundant oxygen-containing functional groups (Mn-N4-C(EDA)) exhibits excellent affinity towards elemental mercury, with an adsorption capacity of up to 29.5 mg/g surpassing the most carbon-based materials. Furthermore, it also exhibits excellent tolerance towards various industrial flue gas conditions, performing an adsorption capacity of 16.4 ± 0.2 mg/g within the wide temperature range of 20-200 °C and being promoted by the NO, HCl and H2O, which facilitates practical industrial applications. Theoretical simulations further indicate that the bonding between individual Mn and oxygen sites significantly enhances the mercury adsorption capability of Mn-O-N4 sites, benefiting from the optimization of manganese's electronic structure by oxygen-containing species. Therefore, this study presents a multitude of opportunities for enhancing the adsorption of elemental mercury at interfaces through the directed modulation of metal-oxygen bonds(M-O).

Effect of Melissa officinalis L. leaf extract on manganese-induced cyto-genotoxicity on Allium cepa L

Although the antioxidant properties of Melissa officinalis extract (Mox) are widely known, little work has focused on its protective capacity against heavy metal stress. The primary objective of this study was to determine the potential of Mox to mitigate manganese (II) chloride (MnCI2)-induced cyto-genotoxicity using the Allium and comet assays. Physiological, genotoxic, biochemical and anatomical parameters as well as the phenolic composition of Mox were examined in Allium cepa (L.). Application of 1000 µM MnCl2 reduced the rooting percentage, root elongation, weight gain, mitotic index and levels of chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b pigments compared to the control group. However, it increased micronuclei formation, chromosomal abnormality frequencies, tail DNA percentage, proline amount, lipid peroxidation level and meristematic damage severity. The activities of superoxide dismutase and catalase also increased. Chromosomal aberrations induced by MnCl2 were fragment, sticky chromosome, vagrant chromosome, unequal distribution of chromatin and bridge. Application of 250 mg/L Mox and 500 mg/L Mox along with MnCl2 significantly alleviated adverse effects dose dependently. The antioxidant activity bestowed by the phenolic compounds in Mox assisted the organism to combat MnCl2 toxicity. Consequently, Mox exerted remarkable protection against MnCl2 toxicity and it needs to be investigated further as a potential therapeutic option.

Phase variation of manganese oxide in the MnO@ZnO nanocomposite with calcination temperature and its effect on structural and biological activities

Having powerful antibacterial and antioxidant effects, zinc oxide and manganese oxide nanomaterials are of great interest. Here we have synthesized manganese oxide decorated zinc oxide (MZO) nanocomposites by co-precipitation method, calcined at different temperatures (300-750 °C) and studied various properties. Here the crystalline structure of the nanocomposite and phase change of the manganese oxide are observed with calcination temperature. The average crystalline size increases and the dislocation density and microstrain decrease with the increase in calcined temperature for the same structural features. The formation of composites was confirmed by XRD pattern and SEM images. EDAX spectra proved the high purity of the composites. Here, different biological properties change with the calcination temperature for different shapes, sizes and structures of the nanocomposite. Nanomaterial calcined at 750 °C provides the best anti-microbial activity against Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhimurium, Shigella flexneri (gram-negative), Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus megaterium (gram-positive) bacterial strain at 300 µg/mL concentration. The nanomaterial with calcination temperatures of 300 °C and 450 °C provided better antioxidant properties.

Functional Ag-EDTA-modified MnO2 nanocoral reef for rapid removal of hazardous copper from wastewater

A novel MnO2@EDTA-Ag nanocoral reef was constructed via a simplified redox reaction followed by EDTA and Ag nanoparticles impregnation to capture hazardous copper (II) from wastewater. A comprehensive characterization of the synthesized materials was conducted. The morphology of MnO2@EDTA-Ag in the form of a nanocoral reef was constructed of two-dimensional nanoplatelets and nanorod-like nanostructures. The optimal adsorption conditions proposed by the Plackett-Burman design (PBD) that would provide a removal % of 99.95 were pH 5.5, a contact time of 32.0 min, a Cu(II) concentration of 11.2 mg L-1, an adsorbent dose of 0.05 g, and a temperature of 40.3 °C. The loading of Ag nanoparticles onto MnO2@EDTA improved the adsorption capability of MnO2@EDTA-Ag. Additionally, the recyclability of MnO2@EDTA-Ag nanocoral reef was maintained at 80% after three adsorption-desorption cycles, and there was no significant change in the XRD analysis before and after the recycling process, implying its stability. It was found that nanocoral reef-assisted EDTA formed a chelation/complexation reaction between COO- groups and C-N bonds of EDTA with Cu(II) ions. In addition, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis proved the synergistic effect of the electrostatic interaction and chelation/complexation was responsible for the removal mechanism of Cu(II). Also, the results demonstrated no significant variation in MnO2@EDTA-Ag removal efficiency for all the tested real water samples, revealing its efficacy in wastewater treatment. Therefore, the current study suggests that MnO2@EDTA-Ag has substantial potential to be used as a feasible adsorbent for probable hazardous metals remediation.

Novel carbon-based composites enriched with Fe and Mn as effective and eco-friendly adsorbents of heavy metals in multicomponent solutions

With increasing demand for adsorbents highly effective in pollutant removal, carbon-based porous materials are becoming more and more popular. In this work, a new approach to the synthesis of such solids using an environmentally friendly, two-step preparation method is presented. A series of hybrid porous silica-containing carbon composites was synthesized, namely: metal free (C/SiO2), enriched with manganese (C/Mn/SiO2), as well as iron (C/Fe/SiO2). The effect of additives on the structure and morphology of the composites was evaluated using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), nitrogen adsorption/desorption and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The as-synthesized carbons were used as effective adsorbents for the simultaneous removal of heavy metals, including lead (Pb(II)) and zinc (Zn(II)) ions. In particular, it was determined that C/Mn/SiO2 sample demonstrated the highest adsorption capacity towards Pb(II) and Zn(II) ions. It was equal to 211.60 mg/g for Pb(II) and 74.95 mg/g for Zn(II). Zeta potential and surface charge density of the solids, with and without metals, were investigated to determine electrical double layer structure, whereas stability studies and aggregate size measurements were performed to estimate solid aggregation under selected conditions. It was established that solids with adsorbed metals formed suspensions with lower stability than those without ions. This, in turn, facilitates their separation from aqueous solutions.

High-Rate One-Dimensional α-MnO2 Anode for Lithium-Ion Batteries: Impact of Polymorphic and Crystallographic Features on Lithium Storage

Manganese dioxide (MnO2) exists in a variety of polymorphs and crystallographic structures. The electrochemical performance of Li storage can vary depending on the polymorph and the morphology. In this study, we present a new approach to fabricate polymorph- and aspect-ratio-controlled α-MnO2 nanorods. First, δ-MnO2 nanoparticles were synthesized using a solution plasma process assisted by three types of sugars (sucrose, glucose, and fructose) as reducing promoters; this revealed different morphologies depending on the nucleation rate and reaction time from the molecular structure of the sugars. Based on the morphology of δ-MnO2, the polymorphic-transformed three types of α-MnO2 nanorods showed different aspect ratios (c/a), which highly affected the transport of Li ions. Among them, a relatively small aspect ratio (c/a = 5.1) and wide width of α-MnO2-S nanorods (sucrose-assisted) induced facile Li-ion transport in the interior of the particles through an increased Li-ion pathway. Consequently, α-MnO2-S exhibited superior battery performance with a high-rate capability of 673 mAh g-1 at 2 A g-1, and it delivered a high reversible capacity of 1169 mAh g-1 at 0.5 A g-1 after 200 cycles. Our findings demonstrated that polymorphs and crystallographic properties are crucial factors in the electrode design of high-performance Li-ion batteries.

Characterization of Mn3 O4 -MnO2 nanocomposites biosynthesized by cell lysate of Haloferax alexandrinus GUSF-1

Manganese oxide nanocomposites attract huge attention in various biotechnological fields due to their extensive catalytic properties. This study reports an easy, rapid, and cost-effective method of using the cell lysate of haloarchaeon, Haloferax alexandrinus GUSF-1 for the synthesis of manganese oxide nanoparticles. The reaction between the cell lysate and manganese sulfate resulted in the formation of a dark brown precipitate within 48 h at room temperature. The X-ray diffraction pattern showed the existence of Mn3 O4 and MnO2 phases consistent with the JCPDS card no. (01-075-1560 and 00-050-0866). The dark brown colloidal suspension of MnO3 -MnO2 in methanol showed maximum absorption between 220 and 260 nm. The EDX spectrum confirmed the presence of manganese and oxygen. The Transmission electron microscopy revealed the spherical morphology with an average particle size between 30 and 60 nm. The magnetic moment versus magnetic field (MH) curve, at room temperature (300 K) did not saturate even at a high magnetic field (±3T) indicating the paramagnetic nature of the prepared nanocomposite. The Atomic Emission Spectroscopic analysis showed a negligible amount of soluble manganese (0.03 ppm in 50 ppm) in the Mn3 O4 -MnO2 suspension suggesting the maximum stability of the material in the solvent over time. Interstingly, Mn3 O4 -MnO2 nanocomposites evidenced antimicrobial activity in the order of Pseudomonas aeruginosa > Salmonella typhi > Escherichia coli > Proteus vulgaris > Candida albicans > Staphylococcus aureus. Conclusively, this is the first report on the formation of Mn3 O4 -MnO2 nanocomposites using cell lysate of salt pan haloarcheon Haloferax alexandrinus GUSF-1 with antimicrobial potential.

Self-consumed strategy to reuse cathode residue for Zn stabilization in spent batteries: Structural properties and metal stabilization effect

Due to ecotoxicity, zinc (Zn) as a heavy metal from electronic waste (e-waste) has been a source of pollution to soil and water for several decades. This study proposes a solution to this serious environmental problem via a self-consumed strategy to stabilize Zn in anode residues. This unique method uses cathode residues from spent zinc-manganese oxide (Zn-Mn) batteries as a stabilized matrix via thermal treatment. More specifically, the strategy incorporates zinc metal into a chemically durable matrix comprised of a lattice of AB2O4 compounds. Results demonstrate that 5-20 wt% of anode residue were fully incorporated into the cathode residue to form a Mn3-xZnxO4 solid solution after sintering at 1300 ℃ for 3 h. The lattice parameters of the Mn3-xZnxO4 solid solution reveal an approximately linear decreasing evolution with the addition of anode residue. To determine the occupancy of Zn in the crystal structure of the products, we used Raman and Rietveld refinement processes; the results reveal that Mn2+ in the 4a site was gradually replaced by Zn2+. We then used a prolonged toxicity leaching procedure to evaluate the Zn stabilization effect after phase transformation; this showed that the Zn leachability of sintered anode-doped cathode sample was over 40 folds lower than that of untreated anode residue. Therefore, this study presents an economical and effective strategy for mitigating the presence of heavy metal pollutants derived from e-waste.

Drug Delivery Strategies and Nanozyme Technologies to Overcome Limitations for Targeting Oxidative Stress in Osteoarthritis

Oxidative stress is an important, but elusive, therapeutic target for osteoarthritis (OA). Antioxidant strategies that target oxidative stress through the elimination of reactive oxygen species (ROS) have been widely evaluated for OA but are limited by the physiological characteristics of the joint. Current hallmarks in antioxidant treatment strategies include poor bioavailability, poor stability, and poor retention in the joint. For example, oral intake of exogenous antioxidants has limited access to the joint space, and intra-articular injections require frequent dosing to provide therapeutic effects. Advancements in ROS-scavenging nanomaterials, also known as nanozymes, leverage bioactive material properties to improve delivery and retention. Material properties of nanozymes can be tuned to overcome physiological barriers in the knee. However, the clinical application of these nanozymes is still limited, and studies to understand their utility in treating OA are still in their infancy. The objective of this review is to evaluate current antioxidant treatment strategies and the development of nanozymes as a potential alternative to conventional small molecules and enzymes.

Significance of MnO2 Type and Solution Parameters in Manganese Removal from Water Solution

A very low concentration of manganese (Mn) in water is a critical issue for municipal and industrial water supply systems. Mn removal technology is based on the use of manganese oxides (MnO_x), especially manganese dioxide (MnO₂) polymorphs, under different conditions of pH and ionic strength (water salinity). The statistical significance of the impact of polymorph type (akhtenskite ε-MnO₂, birnessite δ-MnO₂, cryptomelane α-MnO₂ and pyrolusite β-MnO₂), pH (2-9) and ionic strength (1-50 mmol/L) of solution on the adsorption level of Mn was investigated. The analysis of variance and the non-parametric Kruskal-Wallis H test were applied. Before and after Mn adsorption, the tested polymorphs were characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope techniques and gas porosimetry analysis. Here we demonstrated the significant differences in adsorption level between MnO₂ polymorphs' type and pH; however, the statistical analysis proves that the type of MnO₂ has a four times stronger influence. There was no statistical significance for the ionic strength parameter. We showed that the high adsorption of Mn on the poorly crystalline polymorphs leads to the blockage of micropores in akhtenskite and, contrary, causes the development of the surface structure of birnessite. At the same time, no changes in the surfaces of cryptomelane and pyrolusite, the highly crystalline polymorphs, were found due to the very small loading by the adsorbate.

Mn3 O4 Nanoshell Coated Metal-Organic Frameworks with Microenvironment-Driven O2 Production and GSH Exhaustion Ability for Enhanced Chemodynamic and Photodynamic Cancer Therapies

Nanomedicine exhibits emerging potentials to deliver advanced therapeutic strategies in the fight against triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). Nevertheless, it is still difficult to develop a precise codelivery system that integrates highly effective photosensitizers, low toxicity, and hydrophobicity. In this study, PCN-224 is selected as the carrier to enable effective cancer therapy through light-activated reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation, and the PCN-224@Mn₃ O₄ @HA is created in a simple one-step process by coating Mn₃ O₄ nanoshells on the PCN-224 template, which can then be used as an "ROS activator" to exert catalase- and glutathione peroxidase-like activities to alleviate tumor hypoxia while reducing tumor reducibility, leading to improved photodynamic therapeutic (PDT) effect of PCN-224. Meanwhile, Mn²⁺ produced cytotoxic hydroxyl radicals (∙OH) via the Fenton-like reaction, thus producing a promising spontaneous chemodynamic therapeutic (CDT) effect. Importantly, by remodeling the tumor microenvironment (TME), Mn₃ O₄ nanoshells downregulated hypoxia-inducible factor 1α expression, inhibiting tumor growth and preventing tumor revival. Thus, the developed nanoshells, via light-controlled ROS formation and multimodality imaging abilities, can effectively inhibit tumor proliferation through synergistic PDT/CDT, and prevent tumor resurgence by remodeling TME.

Structural and antibacterial studies of novel ZnO and ZnxMn(1-x)O nanostructured titanium scaffolds for biomedical applications

In the biomedical field, the demand for the development of broad-spectrum biomaterials able to inhibit bacterial growth is constantly increasing. Chronic infections represent the most serious and devastating complication related to the use of biomaterials. This is particularly relevant in the orthopaedic field, where infections can lead to implant loosening, arthrodesis, amputations and sometimes death. Antibiotics are the conventional approach for implanted-associated infections, but they have the limitation of increasing antibiotic resistance, a critical worldwide healthcare issue. In this context, the development of anti-infective biomaterials and infection-resistant surfaces can be considered the more effective strategy to prevent the implant colonisation and biofilm formation by bacteria, so reducing the occurrence of implant-associated infections. In the last years, inorganic nanostructures have become extremely appealing for chemical modifications or coatings of Ti surfaces, since they do not generate antibiotic resistance issues and are featured by superior stability, durability, and full compatibility with the sterilization process. In this work, we present a simple, rapid, and cheap chemical nanofunctionalization of titanium (Ti) scaffolds with colloidal ZnO and Mn-doped ZnO nanoparticles (NPs), prepared by a sol-gel method, exhibiting antibacterial activity. ZnO NPs and Zn_xMn_(1-x)O NPs formation with a size around 10-20nm and band gap values of 3.42 eV and 3.38 eV, respectively, have been displayed by characterization studies. UV-Vis, fluorescence, and Raman investigation suggested that Mn ions acting as dopants in the ZnO lattice. Ti scaffolds have been functionalized through dip coating, obtaining ZnO@Ti and Zn_xMn_(1-x)O@Ti biomaterials characterized by a continuous nanostructured film. ZnO@Ti and Zn_xMn_(1-x)O@Ti displayed an enhanced antibacterial activity against both Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Gram-negative Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) bacterial strains, compared to NPs in solution with better performance of Zn_xMn_(1-x)O@Ti respect to ZnO@Ti. Notably, it has been observed that Zn_xMn_(1-x)O@Ti scaffolds reach a complete eradication for S. aureus and 90 % of reduction for P. aeruginosa. This can be attributed to Zn²⁺ and Mn²⁺ metal ions release (as observed by ICP MS experiments) that is also maintained over time (72 h). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study reported in the literature describing ZnO and Mn-doped ZnO NPs nanofunctionalized Ti scaffolds with improved antibacterial performance, paving the way for the realization of new hybrid implantable devices through a low-cost process, compatible with the biotechnological industrial chain method.

β-MnOOH nanoplate-enhanced chemiluminescence reaction and its application to the determination of amoxicillin and salbutamol sulfate

In this research, β-MnOOH nanoplates (NPLs) were hydrothermally produced and then identified using several spectroscopic methods. The β-MnOOH NPLs were used to catalyze the chemiluminescence (CL) reaction of NaHCO₃ -H₂ O₂ . To validate the capability of the CL reaction for pharmaceutical analysis, the CL reaction of β-MnOOH NPLs-NaHCO₃ -H₂ O₂ reaction was exploited to develop a new method of measuring antibiotics named amoxicillin (AMX) and salbutamol sulfate (SLB). This method is based on the attenuating β-MnOOH NPLs-NaHCO₃ -H₂ O₂ CL reaction by the antibiotics. Calibration curves were linear in the range 3.00 × 10^-5 to 1.00 × 10^-3  mol L^-1 for AMX and in the range 1.00 × 10^-5 to 1.00 × 10^-4  mol L^-1 for SLB. The limits of detections obtained using the CL method for AMX and SLB were 8.90 × 10^-6  mol L^-1 and 5.60 × 10^-6  mol L^-1 , respectively. The relative standard deviations for AMX and SLB, at the 5.00 × 10^-5  mol L^-1 concentration, were 2.44% and 2.57% (n = 5), respectively. The study of the effect of foreign species showed that the CL method developed has the appropriate selectivity for AMX and SLB. The success of the CL method in actual samples analysis was demonstrated by accurately measuring the selected antibiotics in the pharmaceutical formulations.

Insights into the Redox and Structural Properties of CoOx and MnOx: Fundamental Factors Affecting the Catalytic Performance in the Oxidation Process of VOCs

Volatile organic compound (VOC) abatement has become imperative nowadays due to their harmful effect on human health and on the environment. Catalytic oxidation has appeared as an innovative and promising approach, as the pollutants can be totally oxidized at moderate operating temperatures under 500 °C. The most active single oxides in the total oxidation of hydrocarbons have been shown to be manganese and cobalt oxides. The main factors affecting the catalytic performances of several metal-oxide catalysts, including CoOx and MnOx, in relation to the total oxidation of hydrocarbons have been reviewed. The influence of these factors is directly related to the Mars–van Krevelen mechanism, which is known to be applied in the case of the oxidation of VOCs in general and hydrocarbons in particular, using transitional metal oxides as catalysts. The catalytic behaviors of the studied oxides could be closely related to their redox properties, their nonstoichiometric, defective structure, and their lattice oxygen mobility. The control of the structural and textural properties of the studied metal oxides, such as specific surface area and specific morphology, plays an important role in catalytic applications. A fundamental challenge in the development of efficient and low-cost catalysts is to choose the criteria for selecting them. Therefore, this research could be useful for tailoring advanced and high-performance catalysts for the total oxidation of VOCs.

Synthesis of Fe2O3/Mn2O3 Nanocomposites and Impregnated Porous Silicates for Dye Removal: Insights into Treatment Mechanisms

Fe2O3/Mn2O3 nanocomposites and impregnated porous silicates (Fe2O3/Mn2O3@SiO2 [FMS]) were prepared and investigated as catalytic adsorbents. The catalysts were applied for cationic and anionic dye pollutants in the adsorption, Fenton reaction, and photocatalysis processes at a pH of 7. Fe2O3/Mn2O3 nanoparticles (FM-NPs) were prepared using the co-precipitation method and were impregnated in SiO2 by the sol–gel process. The synthesized materials were characterized using various sophisticated techniques. Results indicated that the impregnation of bi-metallic NPs in SiO2 increased the surface area, and the function of the adsorbent also improved. FMS showed a significant adsorption effect, with 79.2% rhodamine B removal within 15 min. Fenton and photocatalyst reaction showed removal rates of 85.3% and 97.9%, respectively, indicating that negatively charged porous silicate attracts cationic pollutants. In the case of the anionic pollutant, Congo red, the adsorption reaction of FMS did not occur, and the removal rate of the photocatalyst reaction was 79%, indicating the repulsive force between the negatively charged silica and the anionic dye. Simultaneously, bi-metal-bonded FM-NPs facilitated the photocatalytic reaction, reducing the recombination of electron-hole pairs. This study provides new insights into the synthesis of FM-NPs and FMS as photocatalytic adsorbents and their photocatalytic mechanisms based on reaction conditions and contaminant characteristics. The developed materials have potential applications for environmental mitigation.

Manganese Schiff Base Complexes, Crystallographic Studies, Anticancer Activities, and Molecular Docking

Choice of ligands is significant to successful synthesis of metal complexes (coordination compounds). This study reports the use of Schiff base as the right ligand to control the poor bioavailability and neurodegenerative toxicity challenges of manganese ion. In line with this study, document analysis was used as the methodological approach to evaluate the significance of Schiff base ligands in easing these manganese’s challenges and aligning the resultant coordination compounds (manganese Schiff base complexes) as therapeutic agents in anticancer studies. Report also involves crystallographic studies where single crystal X-ray crystallography was used as a chemical characterization technique. In addition, molecular docking studies, MOE2008, and AutoDock software were used to reveal the mode of interaction between the Schiff base and the manganese(II) and (III) ions, as well as scrutinizing the biological efficacy of the manganese(II) and manganese(III) Schiff bases coordination compounds as anticancer agents against some anticancer cell lines. Conclusion drawn was that manganese(II) and manganese(III) Schiff bases coordination compounds gave more active and potent activities than the corresponding Schiff bases. As a result, challenges of neurodegenerative toxicity and poor bioavailability of manganese ion were overcome, and the chelation therapy was fulfilled. Results from single crystal X-ray crystallography confirmed the successful synthesis of manganese(II) and manganese(III) Schiff bases coordination compounds and revealed the mechanism of reaction, while the molecular docking buttressed the biological activities of the Schiff base ligand and manganese Schiff base coordination compounds by portraying the structure activity relationship (SAR) between either Schiff base or the manganese Schiff base coordination compounds and the virtual cancer cell line (receptor protein), where hits were obtained for lead optimizations.

Sodium Pre-Intercalation-Based Na3-δ-MnO2@CC for High-Performance Aqueous Asymmetric Supercapacitor: Joint Experimental and DFT Study

Electrochemical energy storage devices are ubiquitous for personal electronics, electric vehicles, smart grids, and future clean energy demand. SCs are EES devices with excellent power density and superior cycling ability. Herein, we focused on the fabrication and DFT calculations of Na₃-δ-MnO₂ nanocomposite, which has layered MnO₂ redox-active sites, supported on carbon cloth. MnO₂ has two-dimensional diffusion channels and is not labile to structural changes during intercalation; therefore, it is considered the best substrate for intercalation. Cation pre-intercalation has proven to be an effective way of increasing inter-layered spacing, optimizing the crystal structure, and improving the relevant electrochemical behavior of asymmetric aqueous supercapacitors. We successfully established Na⁺ pre-intercalated δ-MnO₂ nanosheets on carbon cloth via one-pot hydrothermal synthesis. As a cathode, our prepared material exhibited an extended potential window of 0-1.4 V with a remarkable specific capacitance of 546 F g^-1(300 F g^-1 at 50 A g^-1). Moreover, when this cathode was accompanied by an N-AC anode in an asymmetric aqueous supercapacitor, it illustrated exceptional performance (64 Wh kg^-1 at a power density of 1225 W kg^-1) and incomparable potential window of 2.4 V and 83% capacitance retention over 10,000 cycles with a great Columbic efficiency.

α-MnO2 Nanowire Structure Obtained at Low Temperature with Aspects in Environmental Remediation and Sustainable Energy Applications

Hydrothermally obtained α-MnO2 nanowire characterizations confirm the tetragonal crystalline structure that is several micrometers long and 20–30 nm in diameter with narrow distributions in their dimensions. The absorption calculated from diffuse reflectance of α-MnO2 occurred in the visible region ranging from 400 to 550 nm. The calculated band gap with Quantum Espresso using HSE approximation is ~2.4 eV for the ferromagnetic case, with a slightly larger gap of 2.7 eV for the antiferromagnetic case, which is blue-shifted as compared to the experimental. The current work also illustrates the transformations that occur in the material under heat treatment during TGA analysis, with the underlying mechanism. Electrochemical studies on graphite supports modified with α-MnO2 compositions revealed the modified electrode with the highest electric double-layer capacitance of 3.444 mF cm−2. The degradation rate of an organic dye—rhodamine B (RhB)—over the compound in an acidic medium was used to examine the catalytic and photocatalytic activities of α-MnO2. The peak shape changes in the time-dependent visible spectra of RhB during the photocatalytic reaction were more complex and progressive. In two hours, RhB degradation reached 97% under sun irradiation and 74% in the dark.

Manganese dioxide nanosheet-containing reactors as antioxidant support for neuroblastoma cells

Supporting mammalian cells against reactive oxygen species such as hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) is essential. Bottom-up synthetic biology aims to integrate designed artificial units with mammalian cells. Here, we used manganese dioxide nanosheets (MnO₂-NSs) as catalytically active entities that have superoxide dismutase-like and catalase-like activities. The integration of these MnO₂-NSs into 7 μm reactors was able to assist SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells when stressed with H₂O₂. Complementary, Janus-shaped 800 nm reactors with one hemisphere coated with MnO₂-NSs showed directed locomotion in cell media with top speeds up to 50 μm s^-1 when exposed to 300 mM H₂O₂ as a fuel, while reactors homogeneously coated with MnO₂-NSs were not able to outperform Brownian motion. These Janus-shaped reactors were able to remove H₂O₂ from the media, protecting cells cultured in the proximity. This effort advanced the use of bottom-up synthetic biology concepts in neuroscience.

Vanadium and Manganese Carbonyls as Precursors in Electron-Induced and Thermal Deposition Processes

The material composition and electrical properties of nanostructures obtained from focused electron beam-induced deposition (FEBID) using manganese and vanadium carbonyl precursors have been investigated. The composition of the FEBID deposits has been compared with thin films derived by the thermal decomposition of the same precursors in chemical vapor deposition (CVD). FEBID of V(CO)₆ gives access to a material with a V/C ratio of 0.63–0.86, while in CVD a lower carbon content with V/C ratios of 1.1–1.3 is obtained. Microstructural characterization reveals for V-based materials derived from both deposition techniques crystallites of a cubic phase that can be associated with VC_1−xO_x. In addition, the electrical transport measurements of direct-write VC_1−xO_x show moderate resistivity values of 0.8–1.2 × 10³ µΩ·cm, a negligible influence of contact resistances and signatures of a granular metal in the temperature-dependent conductivity. Mn-based deposits obtained from Mn₂(CO)₁₀ contain ~40 at% Mn for FEBID and a slightly higher metal percentage for CVD. Exclusively insulating material has been observed in FEBID deposits as deduced from electrical conductivity measurements. In addition, strong tendencies for postgrowth oxidation have to be considered.

Extended Line Defect Graphene Modified by the Adsorption of Mn Atoms and Its Properties of Adsorbing CH4

Extended line defect (ELD) graphene is a two-dimensional (2D) topologically defective graphene with alternate octagonal and quadrilateral carbon rings as basic defective units. This paper reports on the CH4 adsorption properties of ELD graphene according to the first principles of density functional theory (DFT). The effects on the CH4 adsorption of ELD graphene when modified by a single Mn atom or two Mn atoms were investigated, respectively. An ELD-42C graphene configuration consisting of 42 C atoms was first constructed. Then, the ELD-42C graphene configuration was used as a substrate, and a Mn-ELD-42C graphene configuration was obtained by modifying it with a single Mn atom. The results showed that the most stable adsorption site for Mn atoms was above the quadrilateral carbon ring. This Mn-ELD-42C graphene configuration could only stably adsorb up to 30 CH4 molecules on each side, with an average adsorption energy of -0.867 eV/CH4 and an adsorption capacity of 46.25 wt%. Three 2Mn-ELD-42C graphene configurations were then obtained by modifying the ELD-42C graphene substrate with two Mn atoms. When the two Mn atoms were located on either side of a 2Mn-ELD-42C graphene configuration and above the two octagonal carbon rings adjacent to the same quadrilateral carbon ring, it was able to adsorb up to 40 CH4 molecules on each side, with an average adsorption energy of -0.862 eV/CH4 and a CH4 adsorption capacity of 51.09 wt%.

Manganese-based advanced nanoparticles for biomedical applications: future opportunity and challenges

Nanotechnology is the most promising technology to evolve in the last decade. Recent research has shown that transition metal nanoparticles especially manganese (Mn)-based nanoparticles have great potential for various biomedical applications due to their unique fundamental properties. Therefore, globally, scientists are concentrating on the development of various new manganese-based nanoparticles (size and shape dependent) due to their indispensable utilities. Although numerous reports are available regarding the use of manganese nanoparticles, there is no comprehensive review highlighting the recent development of manganese-based nanomaterials and their potential applications in the area of biomedical sciences. The present review article provides an overall survey on the recent advancement of manganese nanomaterials in biomedical nanotechnology and other fields. Further, the future perspectives and challenges are also discussed to explore the wider application of manganese nanoparticles in the near future. Overall, this review presents a fundamental understanding and the role of manganese in various fields, which will attract a wider spectrum of the scientific community.

Recent Manganese Oxide Octahedral Molecular Sieves (OMS–2) with Isomorphically Substituted Cationic Dopants and Their Catalytic Applications

The present report describes the structural and physical–chemical variations of the potassium manganese oxide mineral, α–MnO2, which is a specific manganese octahedral molecular sieve (OMS) named cryptomelane (K–OMS–2), with different transition metal cations. We will describe some frequently used synthesis methods to obtain isomorphic substituted materials [M]–K–OMS–2 by replacing the original manganese cationic species in a controlled way. It is important to note that one of the main effects of doping is related to electronic environmental changes, as well as to an increase of oxygen species mobility, which is ultimately related to the creation of new vacancies. Given the interest and the importance of these materials, here, we collect the most recent advances in [M]–K–OMS–2 oxides (M = Ag, Ce, Mo, V, Nb, W, In, Zr and Ru) that have appeared in the literature during the last ten years, leaving aside other metal–doped [M]–K–OMS–2 oxides that have already been treated in previous reviews. Besides showing the most important structural and physic-chemical features of these oxides, we will highlight their applications in the field of degradation of pollutants, fine chemistry and electrocatalysis, and will suggest potential alternative applications.

A Review of Manganese(III) (Oxyhydr)Oxides Use in Advanced Oxidation Processes

The key role of trivalent manganese (Mn(III)) species in promoting sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOPs) has recently attracted increasing attention. This review provides a comprehensive summary of Mn(III) (oxyhydr)oxide-based catalysts used to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and peroxydisulfate (PDS) in water. The crystal structures of different Mn(III) (oxyhydr)oxides (such as α-Mn₂O₃, γ-MnOOH, and Mn₃O₄) are first introduced. Then the impact of the catalyst structure and composition on the activation mechanisms are discussed, as well as the effects of solution pH and inorganic ions. In the Mn(III) (oxyhydr)oxide activated SR-AOPs systems, the activation mechanisms of PMS and PDS are different. For example, both radical (such as sulfate and hydroxyl radical) and non-radical (singlet oxygen) were generated by Mn(III) (oxyhydr)oxide activated PMS. In comparison, the activation of PDS by α-Mn₂O₃ and γ-MnOOH preferred to form the singlet oxygen and catalyst surface activated complex to remove the organic pollutants. Finally, research gaps are discussed to suggest future directions in context of applying radical-based advanced oxidation in wastewater treatment processes.
