Evolution of Metal Tellurides for Energy Storage/Conversion: From Synthesis to Applications

Metal telluride (MTe)-based nanomaterials have emerged as a potential alternative for efficient, highly conductive, robust, and durable electrodes in energy storage/conversion applications. Significant progress in the material development of MTe-based electrodes is well-sought, from the synthesis of its nanostructures, integration of MTes with supporting materials, synthesis of their hybrid morphologies, and their implications in energy storage/conversion systems. Herein, an extensive exploration of the recent advancements and progress in MTes-based nanomaterials is reviewed. This review emphasizes elucidating the fundamental properties of MTes and providing a systematic compilation of its wet and dry synthesis methods. The applications of MTes are extensively summarized and discussed, particularly, in energy storage and conversion systems including batteries (Li-ion, Zn-ion, Li-S, Na-ion, K-ion), supercapacitor, hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), and CO2 reduction. The review also emphasizes the future prospects and urgent challenges to be addressed in the development of MTes, providing knowledge for researchers in utilizing MTes in energy storage and conversion technologies.

Cluster dynamics of heterometallic trinuclear clusters during ligand substitution, redox chemistry, and group transfer processes

Stepwise metalation of the hexadentate ligand tbsLH6 (tbsLH6 = 1,3,5-C6H9(NHC6H4-o-NHSiMe2tBu)3) affords bimetallic trinuclear clusters (tbsL)Fe2Zn(thf) and (tbsL)Fe2Zn(py). Reactivity studies were pursued to understand metal atom lability as the clusters undergo ligand substitution, redox chemistry, and group transfer processes. Chloride addition to (tbsL)Fe2Zn(thf) resulted in a mixture of species including both all-zinc and all-iron products. Addition of ArN3 (Ar = Ph, 3,5-(CF3)2C6H3) to (tbsL)Fe2Zn(py) yielded a mixture of two trinuclear products: (tbsL)Fe3(μ3-NAr) and (tbsL)Fe2Zn(μ3-NAr)(py). The two imido species were separated via crystallization, and outer sphere reduction of (tbsL)Fe2Zn(μ3-NAr)(py) resulted in the formation of a single product, [2,2,2-crypt(K)][(tbsL)Fe2Zn(μ3-NAr)]. These results provide insight into the relationship between heterometallic cluster structure and substitutional lability and could help inform both future catalyst design and our understanding of metal atom lability in bioinorganic systems.

Design of Single-Atom Catalysts for E lectrocatalytic Nitrogen Fixation

The Electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (ENRR) can be used to solve environmental problems as well as energy shortage. However, ENRR still faces the problems of low NH3 yield and low selectivity. The NH3 yield and selectivity in ENRR are affected by multiple factors such as electrolytic cells, electrolytes, and catalysts, etc. Among these catalysts are at the core of ENRR research. Single-atom catalysts (SACs) with intrinsic activity have become an emerging technology for numerous energy regeneration, including ENRR. In particular, regulating the microenvironment of SACs (hydrogen evolution reaction inhibition, carrier engineering, metal-carrier interaction, etc.) can break through the limitation of intrinsic activity of SACs. Therefore, this Review first introduces the basic principles of NRR and outlines the key factors affecting ENRR. Then a comprehensive summary is given of the progress of SACs (precious metals, non-precious metals, non-metallic) and diatomic catalysts (DACs) in ENRR. The impact of SACs microenvironmental regulation on ENRR is highlighted. Finally, further research directions for SACs in ENRR are discussed.

Catalytic ammonia synthesis on HY-zeolite-supported angstrom-size molybdenum cluster

The development of new catalysts with high N2 activation ability is an effective approach for low-temperature ammonia synthesis. Herein, we report a novel angstrom-size molybdenum metal cluster catalyst for efficient ammonia synthesis. This catalyst is prepared by the impregnation of a molybdenum halide cluster complex with an octahedral Mo6 metal core on HY zeolite, followed by the removal of all the halide ligands by activation with hydrogen. In this activation, the size of the Mo6 cluster (ca. 7 Å) is almost retained. The resulting angstrom-size cluster shows catalytic activity for ammonia synthesis from N2 and H2, and the reaction proceeds continuously even at 200 °C under 5.0 MPa. DFT calculations suggest that N[triple bond, length as m-dash]N bond cleavage is promoted by the cooperation of the multiple molybdenum sites.

Phylogenetic analysis of Nostocales (Cyanobacteria) based on two novel molecular markers, implicated in the nitrogenase biosynthesis

The characterization of cyanobacteria communities remains challenging, as taxonomy of several cyanobacterial genera is still unresolved, especially within Nostocales taxa. Nostocales cyanobacteria are capable of nitrogen fixation; nitrogenase genes are grouped into operons and are located in the same genetic locus. Structural nitrogenase genes (nifH, nifK and nifD) as well as 16S rRNA have been shown to be adequate genetic markers for distinguishing cyanobacterial genera. However, there is no available information regarding the phylogeny of regulatory genes of the nitrogenase cluster. Aiming to provide a more accurate overview of the evolution of nitrogen fixation, this study analyzed for the first time nifE and nifN genes, which regulate the production of nitrogenase, alongside nifH. Specific primers were designed to amplify nifE and nifN genes, previously not available in literature and phylogenetic analysis was carried out in 13 and 14 TAU-MAC culture collection strains, respectively, of ten Nostocales genera along with other sequences retrieved from cyanobacteria genomes. Phylogenetic analysis showed that these genes seem to follow a common evolutionary pattern with nitrogenase structural genes and 16S rRNA. The classification of cyanobacteria based on these molecular markers seems to distinguish Nostocales strains with common morphological, ecological, and physiological characteristics.

Ammonia synthesis by the reductive N-N bond cleavage of hydrazine using an air-stable, phosphine-free ruthenium catalyst

The development of an effective molecular catalyst to reduce hydrazine efficiently to ammonia using a suitable reductant and proton source is demanding. Herein, an unprecedented air-stable, phosphine-free ruthenium complex is used as a potent catalyst for hydrazine hydrate reduction to generate ammonia using SmI2 and water under ambient reaction conditions. Maximizing the flow of electrons from the reductant to the hydrazine hydrate via the metal centre results in a greater yield of ammonia while minimizing the evolution of H2 gas as a competing product.

Azospirillum isscasi sp. nov., a bacterium isolated from rhizosphere soil of rice

A Gram-negative and rod-shaped bacterium, designated C340-1T, was isolated and screened from paddy soil in Zhongshan County, Guangxi Province, PR China. This strain grew at 20-42 °C (optimum, 37 °C), pH 5.0-9.0 (optimum, pH 7.0) and 0-4 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 0-1 %) on Reasoner's 2A medium. The strain could fix atmospheric nitrogen and acetylene reduction activity was recorded up to 120.26 nmol ethylene h-1 (mg protein)-1. Q-10 was the only isoprenoid quinone component; phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine, an unidentified aminolipid and an unidentified polar lipid were the major polar lipids. Summed feature 8 (C18 : 1  ω7c and/or C18 : 1  ω6c) and summed feature 3 (C16 : 1  ω7c and/or C16 : 1  ω6c) were the primary cellular fatty acids. The genome of strain C340-1T was 6.18 Mb, and the G+C content was 69.0 mol%. Phylogenetic tree analysis based on 16S rRNA gene and 92 core genes showed that strain C340-1T was closely related to and clustered with the type strains Azospirillum brasilense JCM 1224T, Azospirillum argentinense Az39T, Azospirillum baldaniorum Sp245T and Azospirillum formosense JCM 17639T. The average nucleotide identity (ANI), average amino acid identity (AAI) and digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH) values between strain C340-1T and the closely related type strains mentioned above were significantly lower than the threshold values for species classification (95-96 %, 95-96 % and 70 %, respectively). Based on phylogenetic, genomic, phenotypic, physiological and biochemical data, we have reason to believe that C340-1T represents a new species of the genus Azospirillum, for which the name Azospirillum isscasi sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is C340-1T(=CCTCC AB 2023105T=KCTC 8126T).

Nitrogenase beyond the Resting State: A Structural Perspective

Nitrogenases have the remarkable ability to catalyze the reduction of dinitrogen to ammonia under physiological conditions. How does this happen? The current view of the nitrogenase mechanism focuses on the role of hydrides, the binding of dinitrogen in a reductive elimination process coupled to loss of dihydrogen, and the binding of substrates to a binuclear site on the active site cofactor. This review focuses on recent experimental characterizations of turnover relevant forms of the enzyme determined by cryo-electron microscopy and other approaches, and comparison of these forms to the resting state enzyme and the broader family of iron sulfur clusters. Emerging themes include the following: (i) The obligatory coupling of protein and electron transfers does not occur in synthetic and small-molecule iron-sulfur clusters. The coupling of these processes in nitrogenase suggests that they may involve unique features of the cofactor, such as hydride formation on the trigonal prismatic arrangement of irons, protonation of belt sulfurs, and/or protonation of the interstitial carbon. (ii) Both the active site cofactor and protein are dynamic under turnover conditions; the changes are such that more highly reduced forms may differ in key ways from the resting-state structure. Homocitrate appears to play a key role in coupling cofactor and protein dynamics. (iii) Structural asymmetries are observed in nitrogenase under turnover-relevant conditions by cryo-electron microscopy, although the mechanistic relevance of these states (such as half-of-sites reactivity) remains to be established.

Protonated and deprotonated vanadyl imidazole tartrates for the mimics of the vanadium coordination in the FeV-cofactor of V-nitrogenase

Chiral imidazole-based oxidovanadium tartrates (H2im)2[Δ,Λ-VIV2O2(R,R-H2tart)(R,R-tart)(Him)2]·Him (1, H4tart = tartaric acid, Him = imidazole) and [Λ,Λ-VIV2O2(R,R-tart)(Him)6]·4H2O (2) and their corresponding enantiomers (H2im)2[Λ,Δ-VIV2O2(S,S-H2tart)(S,S-tart)(Him)2]·Him (3) and [Δ,Δ-VIV2O2(S,S-tart)(Him)6]·4H2O (4) were obtained in alkaline solutions. Interestingly, the tartrates chelate with vanadium bidentately through α-alkoxy/α-hydroxy and α-carboxy groups and imidazole coordinates monodentately through nitrogen atom. It is worth noting that complexes 1 and 3 contain both protonated α-hydroxy and deprotonated α-alkoxy groups simultaneously, which have short V-Oα-alkoxy distances [1.976(4)av Å in 1-4] and long V-Oα-hydroxy distances [2.237(3)av Å in 1 and 2.230(2)av Å in 3]. There is an interesting strong intramolecular hydrogen bond [O(11)⋯O(1) 2.731(5) Å] between the two parts in 1 and 3. The protonated V-O distances are closer to the average bond distance in reported FeV-cofactors (FeV-cos, V-Oα-alkoxy 2.156av Å) in VFe proteins, which corresponds to the feasible protonation of coordinated α-hydroxy in R-homocitrate in V-nitrogenase, showing the homocitrate in the mechanistic model for nitrogen reduction as a secondary proton donor. Furthermore, vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) and IR spectra of 1-4 pointed out the disparity between the characteristic vibrations of the C-O and C-OH groups clearly. EPR experiment and theoretical calculations support +4 oxidation states for vanadium in 1-4. Solution 13C {1H} NMR spectra and CV analyses exhibited the solution properties for 1 and 2, respectively, which indicates that there should be a rapid exchange equilibrium between the protonated and deprotonated species in solutions.

Nitrogen Reduction to Ammonia on a Fe16 Nanocluster: A Computational Study of Catalysis

The sequence of elementary steps leading to reductive ammonia formation from N2 and H2 catalyzed by a Fe16 cluster is studied using generalized gradient approximation density functional theory and an all-electron basis set of triple-ζ quality. The computational methods are validated by comparison to experimental data such as binding energies where possible. First, the associative and dissociative attachment of N2 to Fe16 is considered, followed by exploration of the pathways leading to distal (Fe16-N-NH2) and enzymatic (NFe16-NH2) formation of an amino group. Next, the pathways leading to NH3 formation in both distal and enzymatic cases are examined. Two mechanisms for NH3 detachment have been discovered. An interesting peculiarity of the pathways is that they often proceed with total spin fluctuations, which are related to the rupture and formation of bonds on the surface of the catalyst over the course of the reactions. The reaction Fe16 + N2 + 2H2 → Fe16NH + NH3 is found to be exothermic by 1.02 eV (93.8 kJ/mol).

Antioxidant CeO2 doped with carbon dots enhance ammonia production by an electroactive Azospirillum humicireducens SgZ-5T

Microbial nitrogen fixation is a fundamental process in the nitrogen cycle, providing a continuous supply of biologically available nitrogen essential for life. In this study, we combined cerium oxide-doped carbon dots (CeO2/CDs) with electroactive nitrogen-fixing bacterium Azospirillum humicireducens SgZ-5T to enhance nitrogen fixation through ammonium production. Our research demonstrates that treatment of SgZ-5T cells with CeO2/CDs (0.2 mg mL-1) resulted in a 265.70% increase in ammonium production compared to SgZ-5T cells alone. CeO2/CDs facilitate electron transfer in the biocatalytic process, thereby enhancing nitrogenase activity. Additionally, CeO2/CDs reduce the concentration of reactive oxygen species in SgZ-5T cells, leading to increased ammonium production. The upregulation of nifD, nifH and nifK gene expression upon incorporation of CeO2/CDs (0.2 mg mL-1) into SgZ-5T cells supports this observation. Our findings not only provide an economical and environmentally friendly approach to enhance biological nitrogen fixation but also hold potential for alleviating nitrogen fertilizer scarcity.

Direct biological fixation provides a freshwater sink for N2O

Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a potent climate gas, with its strong warming potential and ozone-depleting properties both focusing research on N2O sources. Although a sink for N2O through biological fixation has been observed in the Pacific, the regulation of N2O-fixation compared to canonical N2-fixation is unknown. Here we show that both N2O and N2 can be fixed by freshwater communities but with distinct seasonalities and temperature dependencies. N2O fixation appears less sensitive to temperature than N2 fixation, driving a strong sink for N2O in colder months. Moreover, by quantifying both N2O and N2 fixation we show that, rather than N2O being first reduced to N2 through denitrification, N2O fixation is direct and could explain the widely reported N2O sinks in natural waters. Analysis of the nitrogenase (nifH) community suggests that while only a subset is potentially capable of fixing N2O they maintain a strong, freshwater sink for N2O that could be eroded by warming.

Two local minima for structures of [4Fe-4S] clusters obtained with density functional theory methods

[4Fe-4S] clusters are essential cofactors in many proteins involved in biological redox-active processes. Density functional theory (DFT) methods are widely used to study these clusters. Previous investigations have indicated that there exist two local minima for these clusters in proteins. We perform a detailed study of these minima in five proteins and two oxidation states, using combined quantum mechanical and molecular mechanical (QM/MM) methods. We show that one local minimum (L state) has longer Fe-Fe distances than the other (S state), and that the L state is more stable for all cases studied. We also show that some DFT methods may only obtain the L state, while others may obtain both states. Our work provides new insights into the structural diversity and stability of [4Fe-4S] clusters in proteins, and highlights the importance of reliable DFT methods and geometry optimization. We recommend r2SCAN for optimizing [4Fe-4S] clusters in proteins, which gives the most accurate structures for the five proteins studied.

Enzymatic Fischer-Tropsch-Type Reactions

The Fischer-Tropsch (FT) process converts a mixture of CO and H2 into liquid hydrocarbons as a major component of the gas-to-liquid technology for the production of synthetic fuels. Contrary to the energy-demanding chemical FT process, the enzymatic FT-type reactions catalyzed by nitrogenase enzymes, their metalloclusters, and synthetic mimics utilize H+ and e- as the reducing equivalents to reduce CO, CO2, and CN- into hydrocarbons under ambient conditions. The C1 chemistry exemplified by these FT-type reactions is underscored by the structural and electronic properties of the nitrogenase-associated metallocenters, and recent studies have pointed to the potential relevance of this reactivity to nitrogenase mechanism, prebiotic chemistry, and biotechnological applications. This review will provide an overview of the features of nitrogenase enzymes and associated metalloclusters, followed by a detailed discussion of the activities of various nitrogenase-derived FT systems and plausible mechanisms of the enzymatic FT reactions, highlighting the versatility of this unique reactivity while providing perspectives onto its mechanistic, evolutionary, and biotechnological implications.

Kartogenin-loaded hydrogel promotes intervertebral disc repair via protecting MSCs against reactive oxygen species microenvironment by Nrf2/TXNIP/NLRP3 axis

Intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration (IDD) and the consequent low back pain present a major medical challenge. Stem cell-based tissue engineering is promising for the treatment of IDD. However, stem cell-based treatment is severely impaired by the increased generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in degenerative disc, which can lead to a high level of cell dysfunction and even death. In this study, a kartogenin (KGN)@PLGA-GelMA/PRP composite hydrogel was designed and used as a carrier of ADSCs-based therapies in disc repair. Injectable composite hydrogel act as a carrier for controlled release of KGN and deliver ADSCs to the degenerative disc. The released KGN can stimulate the differentiation of ADSCs into a nucleus pulposus (NP) -like phenotype and boost antioxidant capacity of ADSCs via activating Nrf2/TXNIP/NLRP3 axis. Furthermore, the composite hydrogel combined with ADSCs attenuated the in vivo degeneration of rat IVDs, maintained IVD tissue integrity and accelerated the synthesis of NP-like extracellular matrix. Therefore, the KGN@PLGA-GelMA/PRP composite hydrogel is a promising strategy for stem cell-based therapies of IDD.

Systematic identification of endogenous strong constitutive promoters from the diazotrophic rhizosphere bacterium Pseudomonas stutzeri DSM4166 to improve its nitrogenase activity

BACKGROUND

Biological nitrogen fixation converting atmospheric dinitrogen to ammonia is an important way to provide nitrogen for plants. Pseudomonas stutzeri DSM4166 is a diazotrophic Gram-negative bacterium isolated from the rhizosphere of cereal Sorghum nutans. Endogenous constitutive promoters are important for engineering of the nitrogen fixation pathway, however, they have not been systematically characterized in DSM4166.

RESULTS

Twenty-six candidate promoters were identified from DSM4166 by RNA-seq analysis. These 26 promoters were cloned and characterized using the firefly luciferase gene. The strengths of nineteen promoters varied from 100 to 959% of the strength of the gentamicin resistance gene promoter. The strongest P12445 promoter was used to overexpress the biological nitrogen fixation pathway-specific positive regulator gene nifA. The transcription level of nitrogen fixation genes in DSM4166 were significantly increased and the nitrogenase activity was enhanced by 4.1 folds determined by the acetylene reduction method. The nifA overexpressed strain produced 359.1 µM of extracellular ammonium which was 25.6 times higher than that produced by the wild-type strain.

CONCLUSIONS

The endogenous strong constitutive promoters identified in this study will facilitate development of DSM4166 as a microbial cell factory for nitrogen fixation and production of other useful compounds.

Occurrence, identification and characterization of diazotrophic bacteria from aerial roots of Rhynchostylis retusa (L.) Blume for plant growth-promoting activity

In this study, the diversity of diazotrophic bacteria of orchid Rhynchostylis retusa (L.) Blume and its potential application in plant growth promotion were evaluated. About 183 nitrogen-fixing bacteria were isolated to screen various plant growth-promoting traits viz. phosphate solubilization,IAA, siderophore, HCN, biofilm and ammonia production. Based on 16S rRNA gene sequencing analysis Achromobacter, Arthrobacter, Acinetobacter, Bacillus, Brevibacterium, Curtobacterium, Erwinia, Kosakonia, Lysinibacillus, Klebseilla, Microbacterium, Mixta, Pantoea, Pseudomonas and Stenotrophomonas isolates were selected and showed positive results for PGP traits. Overall, genus Pantoea, Brevibacterium, Achromobacter, Arthrobacter, Klebsiella, Mixta, Bacillus, and Pseudomonas had the most pronounced PGP characteristics and acetylene reduction among the screened isolates. BOX PCR fingerprinting analysis showed variation in polymorphic banding patterns among diazotrophic strains. PCR amplification of nifH gene and the presence of 37 kDa nitrogenase reductase enzyme band in western blot indicated presence of nitrogenase activity. Our study showed that orchid R. retusa diazotroph interaction helps orchid plant to fix nitrogen, essential nutrients, and control pathogen entry. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on characterization of diazotrophic bacterial community from aerial roots of R. retusa.

Microbes-mediated sulphur cycling in soil: Impact on soil fertility, crop production and environmental sustainability

Reduction in soil fertility and depletion of natural resources due to current intensive agricultural practices along with climate changes are the major constraints for crop productivity and global food security. Diverse microbial populations' inhabiting the soil and rhizosphere participate in biogeochemical cycling of nutrients and thereby, improve soil fertility and plant health, and reduce the adverse impact of synthetic fertilizers on the environment. Sulphur is 4th most common crucial macronutrient required by all organisms including plants, animals, humans and microorganisms. Effective strategies are required to enhance sulphur content in crops for minimizing adverse effects of sulphur deficiency on plants and humans. Various microorganisms are involved in sulphur cycling in soil through oxidation, reduction, mineralization, and immobilization, and volatalization processes of diverse sulphur compounds. Some microorganisms possess the unique ability to oxidize sulphur compounds into plant utilizable sulphate (SO₄^2-) form. Considering the importance of sulphur as a nutrient for crops, many bacteria and fungi involved in sulphur cycling have been characterized from soil and rhizosphere. Some of these microbes have been found to positively affect plant growth and crop yield through multiple mechanisms including the enhanced mobilization of nutrients in soils (i.e., sulphate, phosphorus and nitrogen), production of growth-promoting hormones, inhibition of phytopathogens, protection against oxidative damage and mitigation of abiotic stresses. Application of these beneficial microbes as biofertilizers may reduce the conventional fertilizer application in soils. However, large-scale, well-designed, and long-term field trials are necessary to recommend the use of these microbes for increasing nutrient availability for growth and yield of crop plants. This review discusses the current knowledge regarding sulphur deficiency symptoms in plants, biogeochemical cycling of sulphur and inoculation effects of sulphur oxidizing microbes in improving plant biomass and crop yield in different crops.

Dinitrogen Functionalization Affording Chromium Diazenido and Side-on η2-Hydrazido Complexes

Isolation of key intermediate complexes in dinitrogen functionalization is crucial for elucidating the mechanistic details and further investigation. Herein, the synthesis and characterization of (μ-η¹:η¹-N₂)(η¹-N₂)-Cr(I) 3 and (η¹-N₂)₂-Cr(0) complexes 4 supported by Cp* (Cp* = C₅Me₅) and NHC ligands were reported. Further functionalization of Cr(0)-N₂ complex 4 with silyl halides delivered the key intermediates in the alternating pathway, the chromium diazenido complex 5 and the chromium side-on η²-hydrazido complex 6. Protonation of 6 led to the quantitative formation of N₂H₄. Moreover, the [η²-Me₃SiNNSiMe₃]^2- unit in 6 enabled N-C bond formation reactions with CO₂ and ^tBuNCO, giving the corresponding N,O-chelating hydrazidochromium complexes 7 and 8, respectively.

The binding of reducible N2 in the reaction domain of nitrogenase

The binding of N₂ to FeMo-co, the catalytic site of the enzyme nitrogenase, is central to the conversion to NH₃, but also has a separate role in promoting the N₂-dependent HD reaction (D₂ + 2H⁺ + 2e^- → 2HD). The protein surrounding FeMo-co contains a clear channel for ingress of N₂, directly towards the exo-coordination position of Fe2, a position which is outside the catalytic reaction domain. This led to the hypothesis [I. Dance, Dalton Trans., 2022, 51, 12717] of 'promotional' N₂ bound at exo-Fe2, and a second 'reducible' N₂ bound in the reaction domain, specifically the endo-coordination position of Fe2 or Fe6. The range of possibilities for the binding of reducible N₂ in the presence of bound promotional N₂ is described here, using density functional simulations with a 486 atom model of the active site and surrounding protein. The pathway for ingress of the second N₂ through protein, past the first N₂ at exo-Fe2, and tumbling into the binding domain between Fe2 and Fe6, is described. The calculations explore 24 structures involving 6 different forms of hydrogenated FeMo-co, including structures with S2BH unhooked from Fe2 but tethered to Fe6. The calculations use the most probable electronic states. End-on (η¹) binding of N₂ at the endo position of either Fe2 or Fe6 is almost invariably exothermic, with binding potential energies ranging up to -18 kcal mol^-1. Many structures have binding energies in the range -6 to -14 kcal mol^-1. The relevant entropic penalty for N₂ binding from a diffusible position within the protein is estimated to be 4 kcal mol^-1, and so the binding free energies for reducible N₂ are suitably negative. N₂ binding at endo-Fe2 is stronger than at endo-Fe6 in three of the six structure categories. In many cases the reaction domain containing reducible N₂ is expanded. These results inform computational simulation of the subsequent steps in which surrounding H atoms transfer to reducible N₂.

The HD Reaction of Nitrogenase: a Detailed Mechanism

Nitrogenase is the enzyme that converts N₂ to NH₃ under ambient conditions. The chemical mechanism of this catalysis at the active site FeMo-co [Fe₇ S₉ CMo(homocitrate)] is unknown. An obligatory co-product is H₂ , while exogenous H₂ is a competitive inhibitor. Isotopic substitution using exogenous D₂ revealed the N₂ -dependent reaction D₂ +2H⁺ +2e^- →2HD (the 'HD reaction'), together with a collection of additional experimental characteristics and requirements. This paper describes a detailed mechanism for the HD reaction, developed and elaborated using density functional simulations with a 486-atom model of the active site and surrounding protein. First D₂ binds at one Fe atom (endo-Fe6 coordination position), where it is flanked by H-Fe6 (exo position) and H-Fe2 (endo position). Then there is synchronous transfer of these two H atoms to bound D₂ , forming one HD bound to Fe2 and a second HD bound to Fe6. These two HD dissociate sequentially. The final phase is recovery of the two flanking H atoms. These H atoms are generated, sequentially, by translocation of a proton from the protein surface to S3B of FeMo-co and combination with introduced electrons. The first H atom migrates from S3B to exo-Fe6 and the second from S3B to endo-Fe2. Reaction energies and kinetic barriers are reported for all steps. This mechanism accounts for the experimental data: (a) stoichiometry; (b) the N₂ -dependence results from promotional N₂ bound at exo-Fe2; (c) different N₂ binding K_m for the HD reaction and the NH₃ formation reaction results from involvement of two different sites; (d) inhibition by CO; (e) the non-occurrence of 2HD→H₂ +D₂ results from the synchronicity of the two transfers of H to D₂ ; (f) inhibition of HD production at high pN₂ is by competitive binding of N₂ at endo-Fe6; (g) the non-leakage of D to solvent follows from the hydrophobic environment and irreversibility of proton introduction.

Boosting Electrocatalytic Ammonia Synthesis of Bio-Inspired Porous Mo-Doped Hematite via Nitrogen Activation

Electrochemical N₂ reduction reaction (NRR) emerges as a highly attractive alternative to the Haber-Bosch process for producing ammonia (NH₃) under ambient circumstances. Currently, this technology still faces tremendous challenges due to the low ammonia production rate and low Faradaic efficiency, urgently prompting researchers to explore highly efficient electrocatalysts. Inspired by the Fe-Mo cofactor in nitrogenase, we report Mo-doped hematite (Fe₂O₃) porous nanospheres containing Fe-O-Mo subunits for enhanced activity and selectivity in the electrochemical reduction from N₂ to NH₃. Mo-doping induces the morphology change from a solid sphere to a porous sphere and enriches lattice defects, creating more active sites. It also regulates the electronic structures of Fe₂O₃ to accelerate charge transfer and enhance the intrinsic activity. As a consequence, Mo-doped Fe₂O₃ achieves effective N₂ fixation with a high ammonia production rate of 21.3 ± 1.1 μg h^-1 mg_cat.^-1 as well as a prominent Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 11.2 ± 0.6%, superior to the undoped Fe₂O₃ and other iron oxide catalysts. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further unravel that the Mo-doping in Fe₂O₃ (110) narrows the band gap, promotes the N₂ activation on the Mo site with an elongated N≡N bond length of 1.132 Å in the end-on configuration, and optimizes an associative distal pathway with a decreased energy barrier. Our results may pave the way toward enhancing the electrocatalytic NRR performance of iron-based materials by atomic-scale heteroatom doping.

Role of Serine Coordination in the Structural and Functional Protection of the Nitrogenase P-Cluster

Nitrogenase catalyzes the multielectron reduction of dinitrogen to ammonia. Electron transfer in the catalytic protein (MoFeP) proceeds through a unique [8Fe-7S] cluster (P-cluster) to the active site (FeMoco). In the reduced, all-ferrous (P^N) state, the P-cluster is coordinated by six cysteine residues. Upon two-electron oxidation to the P²⁺ state, the P-cluster undergoes conformational changes in which a highly conserved oxygen-based residue (a Ser or a Tyr) and a backbone amide additionally ligate the cluster. Previous studies of Azotobacter vinelandii (Av) MoFeP revealed that when the oxygen-based residue, βSer188, was mutated to a noncoordinating residue, Ala, the P-cluster became redox-labile and reversibly lost two of its eight Fe centers. Surprisingly, the Av strain with a MoFeP variant that lacked the serine ligand (Av βSer188Ala MoFeP) displayed the same diazotrophic growth and in vitro enzyme turnover rates as wild-type Av MoFeP, calling into question the necessity of this conserved ligand for nitrogenase function. Based on these observations, we hypothesized that βSer188 plays a role in protecting the P-cluster under nonideal conditions. Here, we investigated the protective role of βSer188 both in vivo and in vitro by characterizing the ability of Av βSer188Ala cells to grow under suboptimal conditions (high oxidative stress or Fe limitation) and by determining the tendency of βSer188Ala MoFeP to be mismetallated in vitro. Our results demonstrate that βSer188 (1) increases Av cell survival upon exposure to oxidative stress in the form of hydrogen peroxide, (2) is necessary for efficient Av diazotrophic growth under Fe-limiting conditions, and (3) may protect the P-cluster from metal exchange in vitro. Taken together, our findings suggest a structural adaptation of nitrogenase to protect the P-cluster via Ser ligation, which is a previously unidentified functional role of the Ser residue in redox proteins and adds to the expanding functional roles of non-Cys ligands to FeS clusters.

Cell-specific measurements show nitrogen fixation by particle-attached putative non-cyanobacterial diazotrophs in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre

Biological nitrogen fixation is a major important source of nitrogen for low-nutrient surface oceanic waters. Nitrogen-fixing (diazotrophic) cyanobacteria are believed to be the primary contributors to this process, but the contribution of non-cyanobacterial diazotrophic organisms in oxygenated surface water, while hypothesized to be important, has yet to be demonstrated. In this study, we used simultaneous 15N-dinitrogen and 13C-bicarbonate incubations combined with nanoscale secondary ion mass spectrometry analysis to screen tens of thousands of mostly particle-associated, cell-like regions of interest collected from the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre. These dual isotope incubations allow us to distinguish between non-cyanobacterial and cyanobacterial nitrogen-fixing microorganisms and to measure putative cell-specific nitrogen fixation rates. With this approach, we detect nitrogen fixation by putative non-cyanobacterial diazotrophs in the oxygenated surface ocean, which are associated with organic-rich particles (<210 µm size fraction) at two out of seven locations sampled. When present, up to 4.1% of the analyzed particles contain at least one active putative non-cyanobacterial diazotroph. The putative non-cyanobacterial diazotroph nitrogen fixation rates (0.76 ± 1.60 fmol N cell-1 d-1) suggest that these organisms are capable of fixing dinitrogen in oxygenated surface water, at least when attached to particles, and may contribute to oceanic nitrogen fixation.

Understanding the tethered unhooking and rehooking of S2B in the reaction domain of FeMo-co, the active site of nitrogenase

The active site of the nitrogen fixing enzyme nitrogenase is an Fe₇MoS₉C cluster, and investigations of the enigmatic chemical mechanism of the enzyme have focussed on a pair of Fe atoms, Fe2 and Fe6, and the S2B atom that bridges them. There are three proposals for the status of the Fe2-S2B-Fe6 bridge during the catalytic cycle: one that it remains intact, another that it is completely labile and absent during catalysis, and a third that S2B is hemilabile, unhooking one of its bonds to Fe2 or Fe6. This report examines the tethered unhooking of S2B and factors that affect it, using DFT calculations of 50 geometric/electronic possibilities with a 485 atom model including all relevant parts of surrounding protein. The outcomes are: (a) unhooking the S2B-Fe2 bond is feasible and favourable, but alternative unhooking of the S2B-Fe6 bond is unlikely for steric reasons, (b) energy differences between hooked and unhooked isomers are generally <10 kcal mol^-1, usually with unhooked more stable, (c) ligation at the exo-Fe6 position inhibits unhooking, (d) unhooking of hydrogenated S2B is more favourable than that of bare S2B, (e) hydrogen bonding from the NεH function of His195 to S2B occurs in hooked and unhooked forms, and possibly stabilises unhooking, (f) unhooking is reversible with kinetic barriers ranging 10-13 kcal mol^-1. The conclusion is that energetically accessible reversible unhooking of S2B or S2BH, as an intrinsic property of FeMo-co, needs to be considered in the formulation of mechanisms for the reactions of nitrogenase.

Chiral Supramolecular Microporous Thio-Oxomolybdenum(V) Tartrates for the Selective Adsorptions of Gases

Two pairs of enantiomerically pure hexanuclear and tetranuclear microporous molybdenum(V) d/l-tartrates, (H₂trz)₃[Mo₆O₆(μ₂-O)₃(μ₂-S)₃(d/l-Htart)₃(Htrz)₆]·8H₂O (abbreviated as d-1 and l-1; H₄tart = tartaric acid, Htrz = 1,2,4-triazole) and (H₂2-mim)₈[Mo₄O₄(μ₂-S)₄(d/l-tart)₂]₂·4H₂O (d-2/l-2; H2-mim = 2-methylimidazole), have been isolated in reduced media and well characterized. These enantiomers are observed to finish self-assemblies with single chiral configurations. Structural analyses indicate that tartrates adopt different coordination modes with α-carboxy and/or α-alkoxy groups in 1 and 2, which are further completed with nitrogen-containing ligands. There are two types of micropores that exist in 1 and 2, separately, which are all formed by the isolated molecules themselves. The significant roles of hydrogen bonding among lattice molecules, tartrates, and multi-azoles are suggested, where 1 and 2 exhibited interesting supramolecular networks only through intramolecular self-sorts. Adsorption tests show that 1 has good affinities toward CO₂ and O₂, while 2 is the most potential O₂ adsorbent compared with other common gases CO₂, H₂, CH₄, and N₂ under different pressures. In addition, IR, UV-vis, CD (circular dichroism), and solid-state ¹³C NMR spectroscopies have demonstrated the special chemical properties of these novel molybdenum d/l-tartrates.

Structural basis for coupled ATP-driven electron transfer in the double-cubane cluster protein

Electron transfers coupled to the hydrolysis of ATP allow various metalloenzymes to catalyze reductions at very negative reduction potentials. The double-cubane cluster protein (DCCP) catalyzes the reduction of small molecules, such as acetylene and hydrazine, with electrons provided by its cognate ATP-hydrolyzing reductase (DCCP-R). How ATP-driven electron transfer occurs is not known. To resolve the structural basis for ATP-driven electron transfer, we solved the structures of the DCCP:DCCP-R complex in three different states. The structures show that the DCCP-R homodimer is covalently bridged by a [4Fe4S] cluster that is aligned with the twofold axis of the DCCP homodimer, positioning the [4Fe4S] cluster to enable electron transfer to both double-cubane clusters in the DCCP dimer. DCCP and DCCP-R form stable complexes independent of oxidation state or nucleotides present, and electron transfer requires the hydrolysis of ATP. Electron transfer appears to be additionally driven by modulating the angle between the helices binding the [4Fe4S] cluster. We observed hydrogen bond networks running from the ATP binding site via the [4Fe4S] cluster in DCCP-R to the double-cubane cluster in DCCP, allowing the propagation of conformational changes. Remarkable similarities between the DCCP:DCCP-R complex and the nonhomologous nitrogenases suggest a convergent evolution of catalytic strategies to achieve ATP-driven electron transfers between iron-sulfur clusters.

Second and Outer Coordination Sphere Effects in Nitrogenase, Hydrogenase, Formate Dehydrogenase, and CO Dehydrogenase

Gases like H₂, N₂, CO₂, and CO are increasingly recognized as critical feedstock in "green" energy conversion and as sources of nitrogen and carbon for the agricultural and chemical sectors. However, the industrial transformation of N₂, CO₂, and CO and the production of H₂ require significant energy input, which renders processes like steam reforming and the Haber-Bosch reaction economically and environmentally unviable. Nature, on the other hand, performs similar tasks efficiently at ambient temperature and pressure, exploiting gas-processing metalloenzymes (GPMs) that bind low-valent metal cofactors based on iron, nickel, molybdenum, tungsten, and sulfur. Such systems are studied to understand the biocatalytic principles of gas conversion including N₂ fixation by nitrogenase and H₂ production by hydrogenase as well as CO₂ and CO conversion by formate dehydrogenase, carbon monoxide dehydrogenase, and nitrogenase. In this review, we emphasize the importance of the cofactor/protein interface, discussing how second and outer coordination sphere effects determine, modulate, and optimize the catalytic activity of GPMs. These may comprise ionic interactions in the second coordination sphere that shape the electron density distribution across the cofactor, hydrogen bonding changes, and allosteric effects. In the outer coordination sphere, proton transfer and electron transfer are discussed, alongside the role of hydrophobic substrate channels and protein structural changes. Combining the information gained from structural biology, enzyme kinetics, and various spectroscopic techniques, we aim toward a comprehensive understanding of catalysis beyond the first coordination sphere.

High-Efficiency N2 Electroreduction Enabled by Se-Vacancy-Rich WSe2-x in Water-in-Salt Electrolytes

Electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) is a promising approach for renewable NH₃ production, while developing the NRR electrocatalysis systems with both high activity and selectivity remains a significant challenge. Herein, we combine catalyst and electrolyte engineering to achieve a high-efficiency NRR enabled by a Se-vacancy-rich WSe_2-x catalyst in water-in-salt electrolyte (WISE). Extensive characterizations, theoretical calculations, and in situ X-ray photoelectron/Raman spectroscopy reveal that WISE ensures suppressed H₂ evolution, improved N₂ affinity on the catalyst surface, as well as an enhanced π-back-donation ability of active sites, thereby promoting both activity and selectivity for the NRR. As a result, an excellent faradaic efficiency of 62.5% and NH₃ yield of 181.3 μg h^-1 mg^-1 is achieved with WSe_2-x in 12 m LiClO₄, which is among the highest NRR performances reported to date.

Di- and Tetrameric Molybdenum Sulfide Clusters Activate and Stabilize Dihydrogen as Hydrides

NaY zeolite-encapsulated dimeric (Mo₂S₄) and tetrameric (Mo₄S₄) molybdenum sulfide clusters stabilize hydrogen as hydride binding to Mo atoms. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and adsorption measurements suggest that stabilization of hydrogen as sulfhydryl (SH) groups, as typical for layered MoS₂, is thermodynamically disfavored. Competitive adsorption of H₂ and ethene on Mo was probed by quantifying adsorbed CO on partly hydrogen and/or ethene covered samples with IR spectroscopy. During hydrogenation, experiment and theory suggest that Mo is covered predominately with ethene and sparsely with hydride. DFT calculations further predict that, under reaction conditions, each Mo _x S _y cluster can activate only one H₂, suggesting that the entire cluster (irrespective of its nuclearity) acts as one active site for hydrogenation. The nearly identical turnover frequencies (24.7 ± 3.3 mol_ethane·h^-1·mol_cluster ^-1), apparent activation energies (31-32 kJ·mol^-1), and reaction orders (∼0.5 in ethene and ∼1.0 in H₂) show that the active sites in both clusters are catalytically indistinguishable.

Nitrogen Fixation at the Edges of Boron Nitride Nanomaterials: Synergy of Doping

Synthesis of ammonia at ambient conditions is very demanding yet challenging to achieve due to the production of ammonia fuel, which is considered to be a future fuel for sustainable energy. In this context, computational studies on the catalytic activity of the edge sites of boron nitride nanomaterials for possible nitrogen reduction into ammonia have been investigated. Geometrical and electronic properties of zigzag and armchair B-open edges of BN sheet (B_OE) models have been unraveled to substantiate their catalytic nature. Results reveal that B_OE sites exhibit very high potential determining steps (PDS) of 2.0 eV. Doping of carbon (C) at the nitrogen center, which is vicinal to the B_OE site reduces the PDS of the N₂ reduction reaction (NRR) (to 1.18–1.33 eV) due to the regulation of charge distribution around the active B_OE site. Further, the NRR at the C doped at various edge sites of a boron nitride sheet (BNS) has also been studied in detail. Among the 12 new C-doped defective BNS models, 9 model catalysts are useful for nitrogen activation through either chemisorption or physisorption. Among these, ZC_N, AC_N, and ZC_BV models are efficient in catalyzing NRR with lower PDS of 0.86, 0.88, and 0.86 eV, respectively. The effect of carbon doping in tuning the potential requirements of NRR has been analyzed by comparing the relative stability of intermediates on the catalyst with and without carbon doping. Results reveal that C-doping destabilizes the intermediates compared to non-doped systems, thereby reducing the possibility of catalyst poisoning. However, their interactions with catalysts are good enough so that the NRR activity of the catalyst does not decrease due to C-doping.

Predicting Dinitrogen Activation by Five-Electron Boron-Centered Radicals

Due to the high bond dissociation energy (945 kJ mol^-1) and the large highest occupied molecular orbital-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (HOMO-LUMO) gap (10.8 eV), dinitrogen activation under mild conditions is extremely challenging. On the other hand, the conventional Haber-Bosch ammonia synthesis under harsh conditions consumes more than 1% of the world's annual energy supply. Thus, it is important and urgent to develop an alternative approach for dinitrogen activation under mild conditions. In comparison with transition metals, main group compounds are less explored for nitrogen activation. Here, we carry out density functional theory calculation to screen boron radicals for dinitrogen activation. As a result, the experimentally available seven-electron boron-centered radicals are found to be inactive to N₂ activation, whereas some five-electron boron-centered radicals become favorable for dinitrogen activation, inviting experimental chemists' examination. The principal interacting spin-orbital analyses suggest that a five-electron boron-centered radical can mimic a transition metal on a synergic interaction with dinitrogen in the transition states.

Single-Atom Gold Isolated Onto Nanoporous MoSe2 for Boosting Electrochemical Nitrogen Reduction

The electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) provides a promising strategy to convert the abundant but inert N₂ into NH₃ using renewable energy. Herein, single-atom Au isolated onto bicontinous nanoporous MoSe₂ (np-MoSe₂ ) is designed as an electrocatalyst for achieving highly efficient NRR catalysis, which exhibits a high Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 37.82% and an NH₃ production rate of 30.83 µg h^-1 mg^-1 at -0.3 V versus a reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) in 0.1 m Na₂ SO₄ under ambient conditions. Experimental and theoretical investigations reveal that the introduction of single Au atoms onto np-MoSe₂ optimizes the adsorption of NRR intermediates while suppressing the competing HER, thus providing an energetic-favorable process for enhancing the catalytic selectivity toward electrochemical N₂ reduction into NH₃ .

Highly Efficient Electrocatalytic N2 Reduction to Ammonia over Metallic 1T Phase of MoS2 Enabled by Active Sites Separation Mechanism

The 1T phase of MoS2 has been widely reported to be highly active toward the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), which is expected to restrict the competitive nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR). However, in this work, a prototype of active sites separation over 1T-MoS2 is proposed by DFT calculations that the Mo-edge and S atoms on the basal plane exhibit different catalytic NRR and HER selectivity, and a new role-playing synergistic mechanism is also well enabled for the multistep NRR, which is further experimentally confirmed. More importantly, a self-sacrificial strategy using g-C3 N4 as templates is proposed to synthesize 1T-MoS2 with an ultrahigh 1T content (75.44%, named as CNMS, representing the composition elements of C, N, Mo, and S), which yields excellent NRR performances with an ammonia formation rate of 71.07 µg h-1 mg-1 cat. at -0.5 V versus RHE and a Faradic efficiency of 21.01%. This work provides a promising new orientation of synchronizing the selectivity and activity for the multistep catalytic reactions.

Structural analysis of the reductase component AnfH of iron-only nitrogenase from Azotobacter vinelandii

Biological nitrogen fixation, the conversion of atmospheric dinitrogen into bioavailable ammonium, is exclusively catalyzed by the enzyme nitrogenase that is present in nitrogen-fixing organisms, the diazotrophs. So far, three different nitrogenase variants, encoded in their corresponding, distinct gene clusters, have been found in nature. Each one of these consists of a catalytic dinitrogenase component and a unique, ATP-dependent reductase, the Fe protein. The three variant nitrogenases differ in the composition of the active site and contain either molybdenum, vanadium or only iron in the dinitrogenase component. Here we present the 2.0 Å resolution crystal structure of the ADP-bound reductase component AnfH of the iron-only nitrogenase from the model diazotroph Azotobacter vinelandii. A comparison of this structure with the ones reported for the two other Fe protein homologs NifH and VnfH in the ADP-bound state shows that all are adopting the same conformation. However, cross-reactivity assays with the three nitrogenase homologs revealed AnfH to be compatible with iron-only nitrogenase and to a lesser degree with the vanadium-containing enzyme, but not with molybdenum nitrogenase.

Protein Assembly by Design

Proteins are nature's primary building blocks for the construction of sophisticated molecular machines and dynamic materials, ranging from protein complexes such as photosystem II and nitrogenase that drive biogeochemical cycles to cytoskeletal assemblies and muscle fibers for motion. Such natural systems have inspired extensive efforts in the rational design of artificial protein assemblies in the last two decades. As molecular building blocks, proteins are highly complex, in terms of both their three-dimensional structures and chemical compositions. To enable control over the self-assembly of such complex molecules, scientists have devised many creative strategies by combining tools and principles of experimental and computational biophysics, supramolecular chemistry, inorganic chemistry, materials science, and polymer chemistry, among others. Owing to these innovative strategies, what started as a purely structure-building exercise two decades ago has, in short order, led to artificial protein assemblies with unprecedented structures and functions and protein-based materials with unusual properties. Our goal in this review is to give an overview of this exciting and highly interdisciplinary area of research, first outlining the design strategies and tools that have been devised for controlling protein self-assembly, then describing the diverse structures of artificial protein assemblies, and finally highlighting the emergent properties and functions of these assemblies.

Recent Advances and Perspective on Electrochemical Ammonia Synthesis under Ambient Conditions

Ammonia is an essential chemical for agriculture and industry. To date, NH₃ is mainly supplied by the traditional Haber-Bosch process, which is operated under high-temperature and high-pressure in a centralized way. To achieve ammonia production in an environmentally benign way, electrochemical NH₃ synthesis under ambient conditions has become the frontier of energy and chemical conversion schemes, as it can be powered by renewable energy and operates in a decentralized way. The recent progress on developing different strategies for NH₃ production, including 1) classic NH₃ synthesis pathways over nanomaterials; 2) the Mars-van Krevelen (MvK) mechanism over metal nitrides (MN_x ); 3) reducing the nitrate into NH₃ over Cu-based nanomaterial; and 4) metal-N₂ battery release of NH₃ from Li_x M. Moreover, the most recent advances in engineering strategies for developing highly active materials and the design of the reaction systems for NH₃ synthesis are covered.

Evolution of Ferromagnetic and Antiferromagnetic States in Iron Nitride Clusters FenN and FenN2 (n = 1-10)

First-principles density functional theory calculations on neutral and singly negatively and positively charged iron clusters Fe_n and iron nitride clusters Fe_nN and Fe_nN₂ (n = 1-10) in the range of 1 ≤ n ≤ 10 revealed that there is a strong competition between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic states especially in the Fe_nN₂^0,±1 cluster series. This phenomenon was related to superexchange via a bridging N atom between two iron atoms in the Fe_nN₂^0,±1 cluster series and to a double superexchange effect via a Fe atom shared by two N atoms in the Fe_nN₂^0,±1 series. A thorough examination of the structure-energy-spin state relationships in these clusters is conducted, leading to new insights and confirmation of available experimental results on structural parameters and dissociation energetics. The bond energies of both nitrogen atoms in the Fe_nN₂ series are approximately the same. They weakly depend on the charge of the host cluster and fluctuate around 5.5 eV when moving along the series. The energy of N₂ desorption is relatively small; it varies by about 1.0 eV and depends on the charge of the cluster. The experimental finding that N₂ dissociates on the Fe_n⁺ clusters beginning with n = 4 was supported by the results of our computations. Our computed values of the Fe_n⁺-N bonding energies agree with the experimental data within the experimental uncertainty bars. It was found that the attachment of one or two N atoms does not seriously affect the polarizability, electron affinity, or ionization energy of the host iron clusters independent of the charge.

Spin-Pure Stochastic-CASSCF via GUGA-FCIQMC Applied to Iron-Sulfur Clusters

In this work, we demonstrate how to efficiently compute the one- and two-body reduced density matrices within the spin-adapted full configuration interaction quantum Monte Carlo (FCIQMC) method, which is based on the graphical unitary group approach (GUGA). This allows us to use GUGA-FCIQMC as a spin-pure configuration interaction (CI) eigensolver within the complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) procedure and hence to stochastically treat active spaces far larger than conventional CI solvers while variationally relaxing orbitals for specific spin-pure states. We apply the method to investigate the spin ladder in iron-sulfur dimer and tetramer model systems. We demonstrate the importance of the orbital relaxation by comparing the Heisenberg model magnetic coupling parameters from the CASSCF procedure to those from a CI-only (CASCI) procedure based on restricted open-shell Hartree-Fock orbitals. We show that the orbital relaxation differentially stabilizes the lower-spin states, thus enlarging the coupling parameters with respect to the values predicted by ignoring orbital relaxation effects. Moreover, we find that, while CASCI results are well fit by a simple bilinear Heisenberg Hamiltonian, the CASSCF eigenvalues exhibit deviations that necessitate the inclusion of biquadratic terms in the model Hamiltonian.
