Unintentional emissions of polychlorinated naphthalenes in China: Sources, composition, and historical trends

Polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs) are detrimental to human health and the environment. With the commercial production of PCNs banned, unintentional releases have emerged as a significant environmental source. However, relevant information is still scarce. In this study, provincial emissions for eight PCNs homologues from 37 sources in the Chinese mainland during the period of 1960-2019 were estimated based on a source-specific and time-varying emission factor database. The results showed that the total PCNs emissions in 2019 reached 757.0 kg with Hebei ranked at the top among all the provinces and iron & steel industry as the biggest source. Low-chlorinated PCNs comprised 90% of emissions by mass, while highly chlorinated PCNs dominated in terms of toxicity, highlighting divergent priorities for mitigating emissions and safeguarding human health. The emissions showed an overall upward trend from 1960 to 2019 driven by emission increase from iron & steel industry in terms of source, and from North China and East China in terms of geographic area. Per-capita emissions followed an inverted U-shaped environmental Kuznets curve while emission intensities decreased with increasing per-capita Gross Domestic Product (GDP) following a nearly linear pattern when log-transformed.

Source apportionment of particle-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), oxygenated PAHs (OPAHs), and their associated long-term health risks in a major European city

Many studies have drawn attention to the associations of oxygenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (OPAHs) with harmful health effects, advocating for their systematic monitoring alongside simple PAHs to better understand the aerosol carcinogenic potential in urban areas. To address this need, this study conducted an extensive PM2.5 sampling campaign in Athens, Greece, at the Thissio Supersite of the National Observatory of Athens, from December 2018 to July 2021, aiming to characterize the levels and variability of polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs), perform source apportionment, and assess health risk. Cumulative OPAH concentrations (Σ-OPAHs) were in the same range as Σ-PAHs (annual average 4.2 and 5.6 ng m-3, respectively). They exhibited a common seasonal profile with enhanced levels during the heating seasons, primarily attributed to residential wood burning (RWB). The episodic impact of biomass burning was also observed during a peri-urban wildfire event in May 2021, when PAH and OPAH concentrations increased by a factor of three compared to the monthly average. The study period also included the winter 2020-2021 COVID-19 lockdown, during which PAH and OPAH levels decreased by >50 % compared to past winters. Positive matrix factorization (PMF) source apportionment, based on a carbonaceous aerosol speciation dataset, identified PAC sources related to RWB, local traffic (gasoline vehicles) and urban traffic (including diesel emissions), as well as an impact of regional organic aerosol. Despite its seasonal character, RWB accounted for nearly half of Σ-PAH and over two-thirds of Σ-OPAH concentrations. Using the estimated source profiles and contributions, the source-specific carcinogenic potency of the studied PACs was calculated, revealing that almost 50 % was related to RWB. These findings underscore the urgent need to regulate domestic biomass burning at a European level, which can provide concrete benefits for improving urban air quality, towards the new stricter EU standards, and reducing long-term health effects.

Dual biomarker traceability and ecological risk assessment of centennial organic contamination in South Dongting Lake

Enhanced anthropogenic activity strength has altered the watershed particulate transport and material cycle resulting in organic pollutant deposition changes in Dongting Lake associated with unclear ecological risk. In the present study, dual biomarkers i.e. n-alkanes and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAHs) were applied in the 210Pb-dated sediment cores for traceability of centennial organic pollutants in the lake mouth area. The partial least squares path model and risk quotients method were used to explore the controlling pathways and ecological risk. The results show a range of sedimentary organic carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) was at 1.76-185.66, 0.97-89.80, and 0.01-0.97 g m-2 yr-1 with total reserves of 51.68, 18.44, and 0.27 t ha-1, respectively, over the past 179 years. The presence of PAHs rapidly increased by 2.47 fold from 535.60 ng g-1, while PAHs and carcinogenic PAHs (ΣCPAHs) burial fluxes increased by about 6 and 5 folds, respectively. Accompanied by anthropogenic activities and climate change, the exotic sources gradually becoming predominant. The n-alkane diagnostic ratios indicated a shift of organic matter (OM) from autotrophic bacteria, algae, and phytoplankton-derived sources to macrophyte and terrestrial plants. The exotic origins rose to approximately 73.61 %, while endogenous sources decreased to 26.39 %. The direct effects of anthropogenic activities and their indirect negative impacts on climate and sedimentary structure are the key ways for sediment material loading. The nutrient accumulation in sediments coincides with the lake's eutrophication history over the past decades. The ΣCPAHs accounted for about 89.37 ± 17.14 % of the total TEQ, reflecting a strong ecological risk. The contribution of anthropogenic activities such as fuel usage, fertilizer application, hard pavement coverage, and OM loss from the ecosystem to the sources of organic pollutants and their component types may be a focus of attention in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River plain lake.

Hazard evaluation of forest combustibles based on the correlation between pyrolysis products and combustion parameters

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) sourced by the forest fire release are emerging as significant contributors. Despite their increasing importance, the impact of forest fires on POPs remains inadequately explored and an unclear understanding. Herein, the research, choosing four typical forest combustibles, focuses on the relationship between typical POPs and wildfire parameters by assessing the predominant compounds and their concentration in POPs emissions from such fuels through molecular-level analysis. Experiments reveal forest combustibles thermally degrade to release products, releasing a variety of products, including acids (>7.94 %), aldehydes (>2.32 %), ketones (>3.40 %), alcohols (>7.70 %), esters (>2.33 %), ethers (>4.44 %), hydrocarbons (>6.36 %), aromatic compounds (>21.40 %), and nitrogen-bearing compounds (>11.83 %); notably, aromatic compounds, containing substantial concentrations, are also recognized as POPs. By delving into the pyrolysis (20 °C·ms-1) and burning processes (25, 35 and 50 kW/m2) of forest combustibles, we can gain a comprehensive understanding of the origin of POPs in wildfires. Moreover, Pearson correlation analysis is employed to establish connections between emitting volatiles and forest fire risk, further unveiling a significant correlation between fire hazards of forest combustibles and the presence of aromatic compounds (Correlation over 0.8). These findings are crucial for comprehending the POPs in forests and evaluating forest fire hazards at the molecular level.

Health assessment of emerging persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in PM2.5 in northern and central Taiwan

Over the last two decades, Taiwan has effectively diminished atmospheric concentrations of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/furans (PCDD/Fs) through the adept utilization of advanced technologies and the implementation of air pollution control devices. Despite this success, there exists a dearth of data regarding the levels of other PM2.5-bound organic pollutants and their associated health risks. To address this gap, our study comprehensively investigates the spatial and seasonal variations, potential sources, and health risks of PCDD/Fs, Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and Polychlorinated naphthalene (PCNs) in Northern and Central Taiwan. Sampling collections were conducted at three specific locations, including six municipal waste incinerators in Northern Taiwan, as well as a traffic and an industrial site in Central Taiwan. As a result, the highest mean values of PM2.5 (20.3-39.6 μg/m3) were observed at traffic sites, followed by industrial sites (14.4-39.3 μg/m3), and the vicinity of the municipal waste incinerator (12.4-29.4 μg/m3). Additionally, PCDD/Fs and PCBs exhibited discernible seasonal fluctuations, displaying higher concentrations in winter (7.53-11.9 and 0.09-0.12 fg I-TEQWHO/m3) and spring (7.02-13.7 and 0.11-0.16 fg I-TEQWHO/m3) compared to summer and autumn. Conversely, PCNs displayed no significant seasonal variations, with peak values observed in winter (0.05-0.10 fg I-TEQWHO/m3) and spring (0.03-0.08 fg I-TEQWHO/m3). Utilizing a Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) model, sintering plants emerged as the predominant contributors to PCDD/Fs, constituting 77.9% of emissions. Woodchip boilers (68.3%) and municipal waste incinerators (21.0%) were identified as primary contributors to PCBs, while municipal waste incinerators (64.6%) along with a secondary copper and a copper sludge smelter (22.1%) were the principal sources of PCNs. Moreover, the study specified that individuals aged 19-70 in Northern Taiwan and those under the age of 12 years in Central Taiwan were found to have a significantly higher cancer risk, with values ranging from 9.26 x 10-9-1.12 x 10-7 and from 2.50 x 10-8-2.08 x 10-7respectively.

Risks for animal and human health related to the presence of polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs) in feed and food

EFSA was asked for a scientific opinion on the risks for animal and human health related to the presence of polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs) in feed and food. The assessment focused on hexaCNs due to very limited data on other PCN congeners. For hexaCNs in feed, 217 analytical results were used to estimate dietary exposures for food-producing and non-food-producing animals; however, a risk characterisation could not be performed because none of the toxicological studies allowed identification of reference points. The oral repeated dose toxicity studies performed in rats with a hexaCN mixture containing all 10 hexaCNs indicated that the critical target was the haematological system. A BMDL20 of 0.05 mg/kg body weight (bw) per day was identified for a considerable decrease in the platelet count. For hexaCNs in food, 2317 analytical results were used to estimate dietary exposures across dietary surveys and age groups. The highest exposure ranged from 0.91 to 29.8 pg/kg bw per day in general population and from 220 to 559 pg/kg bw per day for breast-fed infants with the highest consumption of breast milk. Applying a margin of exposure (MOE) approach, the estimated MOEs for the high dietary exposures ranged from 1,700,000 to 55,000,000 for the general population and from 90,000 to 230,000 for breast-fed infants with the highest consumption of breast milk. These MOEs are far above the minimum MOE of 2000 that does not raise a health concern. Taking account of the uncertainties affecting the assessment, the Panel concluded with at least 99% certainty that dietary exposure to hexaCNs does not raise a health concern for any of the population groups considered. Due to major limitations in the available data, no assessment was possible for genotoxic effects or for health risks of PCNs other than hexaCNs.

Potential toxic components in size-resolved particles and gas from residential combustion: Emission factor and health risk

Particulate matter (PM) from residential combustion is an existential threat to human health. Emission factors (EFs) of multiple potential toxic components (PTCs) in size-resolved PM and gas from eight residential fuel combustion were measured, and size distribution, gas/particle partitioning and health risks of the PTCs were investigated. Average EFs from clean coal and anthracite coal were PTEs (sum of EFs of 11 Potential Toxic Elements, 6.62 mg/kg fuels) > PAHs (sum of 22 Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons, 1.12 mg/kg) > OPAHs (sum of 5 Oxygenated Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons, 0.45 mg/kg) > PAEs (sum of 6 Phthalate Esters, 0.11 mg/kg) > NPAHs (sum of 14 Nitropolycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons, 16.84 μg/kg) > OPEs (sum of 7 Organophosphate Esters, 7.57 μg/kg) > PCBs (sum of 6 Polychorinated Biphenyls, 0.07 μg/kg), which were 2-3 and 1-2 orders of magnitude lower than the EFs of PTCs (except PTEs) from bituminous coal and biomass. Most PAHs, OPAHs and NPAHs, which may mainly originate from chemical reactions, showed similar size distributions and averagely 85 % concentrated in PM1. PTEs, PAEs, OPEs and PCBs generated from the release from raw fuels may have a higher proportion, so their size distributions were more complex and varied with combustion temperature, volatility of compounds, binding mode of the raw fuels, and so on. In addition, clean coal and high-quality anthracite coal could reduce the health risks from the potential organic toxic components, but also reveal the stumbling block of PTEs in risk control.

The long-term spatial and temporal distributions of polychlorinated naphthalene air concentrations in Fildes Peninsula, West Antarctica

The knowledge of polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs) in the Antarctic atmosphere is quite limited compared to the Arctic. PCNs are a global concern because of their PBT characteristics (i.e., persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic) and severe and often deadly biological effects on people and other animals. Therefore, the present study used a passive air sampling method to conduct long-term air monitoring of PCNs for almost a decade from 2013 to 2022, specifically on Fildes Peninsula, situated on King George Island, located in West Antarctica. The median sum of mono-CNs to octa-CN concentration (∑75PCNs) in the Antarctic atmosphere was 12.4 pg/m3. In terms of homologues, mono-CNs to tri-CNs predominated. Among these, the prevalent congeners observed were PCN-1 and PCN-2, originating from mono-CNs, followed by PCN-5/7 from di-CNs, and PCN-24/14 from tri-CNs, respectively. Between 2013 and 2022, the total levels of PCNs were found to have decreased approximately fourfold. Ratio analyses and principal component analysis (PCA) showed that the long-range atmospheric transport and combustion-related sources as the potential PCN sources in the study area. This paper provides the most up-to-date temporal trend analysis of PCNs in the Antarctic continent and is the first to document all 75 congeners (mono-CNs to octa-CN homologue groups).

Fossil and Nonfossil Sources of Winter Organic Aerosols in the Regional Background Atmosphere of China

Carbonaceous aerosols (CA) from anthropogenic emissions have been significantly reduced in urban China in recent years. However, the relative contributions of fossil and nonfossil sources to CA in rural and background regions of China remain unclear. In this study, the sources of different carbonaceous fractions in fine aerosols (PM2.5) from five background sites of the China Meteorological Administration Atmosphere Watch Network during the winter of 2019 and 2020 were quantified using radiocarbon (14C) and organic markers. The results showed that nonfossil sources contributed 44-69% to total carbon at these five background sites. Fossil fuel combustion was the predominant source of elemental carbon at all sites (73 ± 12%). Nonfossil sources dominated organic carbon (OC) in these background regions (61 ± 13%), with biomass burning or biogenic-derived secondary organic carbon (SOC) as the most important contributors. However, the relative fossil fuel source to OC in China (39 ± 13%) still exceeds those at other regional/background sites in Asia, Europe, and the USA. SOC dominated the fossil fuel-derived OC, highlighting the impact of regional transport from anthropogenic sources on background aerosol levels. It is therefore imperative to develop and implement aerosol reduction policies and technologies tailored to both the anthropogenic and biogenic emissions to mitigate the environmental and health risks of aerosol pollution across China.

Source characteristics of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and polychlorinated biphenyls in surface soils of Shenyang, China: A comparison of two receptor models combined with Monte Carlo simulation

The surface soil concentrations of 16 PAHs and 15 PCBs were simultaneously determined by gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry in 21 locations of urban areas of Shenyang. The average concentrations of PAHs and PCBs were 26.40 ± 34.68 mg/kg and 48.03 ± 27.47 μg/kg, respectively. Factor analysis with nonnegative constraints (FA-NNC) and absolute principal component score with multiple linear regression (APCS-MLR) model were used to explore and evaluate the sources of PAHs and PCBs in the study area. The results of FA-NNC showed that PAHs in soils were mainly from traffic emissions (49.64%), coal combustion (46.88%) and petrogenic source (3.49%). The PCBs in soils were mainly from commercial and high temperature combustion mixed sources (20.3%), combustion and industry emission mixed sources (21.1%), electrical equipment sources (22.2%) and traffic emission sources (36.4%). The results of APCS-MLR were consistent with those of FA-NNC. The uncertainty of FA-NNC and APCS-MLR model was analyzed by Monte Carlo simulation method. The results revealed the reliability of the two receptor models on source apportionment. The estimated carcinogenic risks indicated that the risks of PAHs in soils exceed the acceptable range (10-6-10-4), while the risks of PCBs were below the acceptable risk level of 10-6.

Contamination Status, Environmental Factor and Risk Assessment of Polychlorinated Biphenyls and Hexachlorobutadiene in Greenhouse and Open-Field Agricultural Soils across China

With the popularization and high-intensity utilization of greenhouse cultivation for crops growth, the pollution of greenhouse soils has been of concern. Therefore, a national-scale survey was conducted to investigate the contamination status, sources, influence factors and the risks of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and hexachlorobutadiene (HCBD) in greenhouse and nearby open-field soils. Contents of PCBs ranged from 10-6). This study provided a full insight on the contamination status and risks of PCBs and HCBD when guiding greenhouse agriculture activities.

Residential combustion of coal: Effect of the fuel and combustion stage on emissions

Worldwide coal is still used for household heating purposes not only because it is available and cheap but also due to behavioural issues. Regional variability in fuels and combustion appliances make accurate emission estimates from this source hard to achieve. In the present study, gaseous (CO, VOCs, SO2 and NOX) and particulate matter (TSP) emission factors (EFs) were determined for Spanish household coal combustion covering three commercial coals and distinct combustion stages and mimicking usage patterns in real households. TSP samples were analysed to determine water-soluble inorganic ions, metal(loid)s, and organic and elemental carbon (OC and EC). Additionally, the morphology of the emitted particles was also characterised. CO (3.43-169 g kg-1), NOX (1.29-6.00 g kg-1) and SO2 (8.96-22.3 g kg-1) EFs showed no trend regarding the combustion stage or coal type tested. On the other hand, VOC, TSP and EC EFs were higher for the ignition/devolatilisation combustion stage, regardless of the fuel tested. TSP EFs (0.085-1.08 g kg-1) increased with increasing coal volatile matter while the opposite trend was recorded for VOC emissions (0.045-3.39 gC kg-1). TSP carbonaceous matter was dominated by EC while OC represented a small fraction of the particulate mass emitted (less than 8 %wt.). Inorganic compounds composed an important fraction of the TSP samples. Sulphate particulate mass fractions (8.66-22.9 %wt.) appeared to increase with coal S-content. Coal combustion released particles with diverse morphologies, including silicate-rich particles, ferro- and glassy-spheres. This study provides novel emission factors to update emission inventories of residential coal combustion. Additionally, detailed chemical profiles were obtained for source apportionment.

An updated global overview of the manufacture and unintentional formation of polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs)

This review updates information on the historical manufacture and unintentional production of polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs). The direct toxicity of PCNs as a result of occupational human exposure and through contaminated feed in livestock was recognised decades ago, making PCNs a precursor chemical for consideration in occupational medicine and occupational safety. This was confirmed by the listing of PCNs by the Stockholm Convention as a persistent organic pollutant in the environment, food, animals and humans. PCNs were manufactured globally between 1910 ∼ 1980, but reliable data on the volumes produced or national outputs are scarce. A total figure for global production would be useful for the purposes of inventory and control and it is clear that combustion related sources such as waste incineration, industrial metallurgy and use of chlorine are current major sources of PCNs to the environment. The upper bound estimate of total global production has been put at 400,000 metric tons but the amounts (at least, many 10 s of tonnes) that are currently emitted unintentionally every year through industrial combustion processes should also be inventoried along with estimates for emissions from bush and forest fires. This would however require considerable national effort, financing and co-operation from source operators. The historical (1910-1970 s) production and resulting emissions through diffusive/evaporative releases through usage, are still reflected in documented occurrence and patterns of PCNs in human milk in Europe and other locations worldwide. More recently, PCN occurrence in human milk from Chinese provinces has been linked to local unintentional emissions from thermal processes.

Industrial source identification of polyhalogenated carbazoles and preliminary assessment of their global emissions

Polyhalogenated carbazoles (PHCZs) are emerging global pollutants found in environmental matrices, e.g., 3000 tonnes of PHCZs have been detected in the sediments of the Great Lakes. Recognition of PHCZ emissions from ongoing industrial activities worldwide is still lacking. Here, we identify and quantify PHCZ emissions from 13 large-scale industries, 12 of which previously have no data. Congener profiles of PHCZs from investigated industrial sources are clarified, which enables apportioning of PHCZ sources. Annual PHCZ emissions from major industries are estimated on the basis of derived emission factors and then mapped globally. Coke production is a prime PHCZ emitter of 9229 g/yr, followed by iron ore sintering with a PHCZ emission of 3237 g/yr. China, Australia, Japan, India, USA, and Russia are found to be significant emitters through these industrial activities. PHCZ pollution is potentially a global human health and environmental issue.

Characteristics and Risk Assessment of PAH Pollution in Soil of a Retired Coking Wastewater Treatment Plant in Taiyuan, Northern China

We analyzed the soil at the site of a former coking wastewater treatment plant on redeveloped land in Taiyuan, northern China, in an attempt to detect the presence of 16 types of priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) listed by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) and evaluate the potential pollution risks. The results show that the total proportion of PAHs in the surface soil of the redeveloped land ranged from 0.3 to 1092.57 mg/kg, with an average value of 218.5 mg/kg, mainly consisting of high-ring (5-6 rings) components. Characteristic ratio analysis indicated that the pollution was mainly related to the combustion of petroleum, coal, and biomasses. The wastewater treatment units operated according to the following treatment train: advection oil separation tank, dissolved air flotation tank, aerobic tank, secondary sedimentation tank, and sludge concentration tank. Our study found that pollution resulting from low-ring PAHs mainly appeared in the advection oil separation tank during the pre-wastewater treatment stage, while medium-ring PAH contamination mainly occurred in the dissolved air floatation tank, aerobic tank, and secondary sedimentation tank during the middle stages of wastewater treatment. High-ring PAH contamination primarily appeared in the sludge concentration tank in the latter stage of wastewater treatment. Based on our assessment of the ecological risk using the Nemerow Comprehensive Pollution Index and the toxicity equivalent factor (TEF) method, we determined that individual PAHs in the study area exceeded acceptable levels and the total amount of pollution was potentially harmful to the ecological environment. In addition, the comprehensive lifetime cancer risk for different populations resulting from exposure to the soil in the study area was determined to be within acceptable limits based on the average PAH concentrations.

Application of a hybrid GEM-CMB model for source apportionment of PAHs in soil of complex industrial zone

Accurate source apportionment is essential for preventing the contamination of pervasive industrial zones. However, a limitation of traditional receptor models is their negligence of transmission loss, which consequently reduces their accuracy. Herein, chemical mass balance (CMB) and generic environmental model (GEM) was fused into a new method, which was employed to determine the traceability of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in a complex zone containing three coking plants, two steel plants, and one energy plant. Five categories of fingerprints comprising various compounds were established for the six plant sources where seven PAHs with low-high rings were screened as the best. Considering volatilization, dry deposition, and advective and dispersive transport, the GEM model generated 232 "compartments" in multimedia to capture subtle variations of PAHs during transmission. More than 90 % of the transmission of the seven PAHs varied between 0.4 % and 6.0 %. Over pure CMB model, acceptable results and best-fit results improved by 1.6-44.4 % and 0.3-80.8 % in the GEM-CMB model. Additionally, the coking, steel, and energy industries accounted for 36.4-56.1 %, 25.6-41.7 %, and 18.3-23.6 % of PAHs sources at four receptor points, respectively. Furthermore, quantifying contaminant loss rendered the traceability results more realistic, judged by distances and discharge capacities. Accordingly, these outcomes can help in precisely determining soil contamination.

Effects of organic carbon burial on biomarker component changes in contamination in northeast Dianchi watershed

The upper reaches of the Yangtze River have experienced increasing anthropogenic stress. Quantitative tracing of carbon (C) sources and ecological risks through biomarkers i.e., polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and n-alkanes is significant for C neutrality and sequestration. Here, source and sink patterns, and factors influencing C burial and biomarker components in a small catchment of Dianchi Lake were explored. The sediment core covered the period 1855-2019. Before 1945, the organic C accumulation rate (OCAR) ranged from 0.71 to 5.12 mg cm^-2 yr^-1, and the PAHs and n-alkanes fluxes were 106.99-616.09 ng cm^-2 yr^-1 and 5.56-31.37 μg cm^-2 yr^-1. During 1945-2005, the OCAR, PAH, and n-alkane burial rapidly increased from 3.19 to 16.17 mg cm^-2 yr^-1, 230.40 to 2538.81 ng cm^-2 yr^-1, and 11.63 to 61.90 μg cm^-2 yr^-1. During 1855-2019, deposition fluxes of PAHs and n-alkanes increased 13.01 and 9.14 times, resulting in increased C burial, driven by environmental changes. A PMF model and the diagnostic ratio indicated that PAHs from coal combustion and traffic emission increased from 22.32% to 65.20% during 1855-2019. The PAH concentrations reflected normal-moderate contamination and potential risks to the aquatic environment. The results facilitate a comprehensive understanding of anthropogenic-driven interactions between increasing OC burial and ecological risks.

Occurrence and congener profiles of dioxins (PCDDs), furans (PCDFs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in ovine and caprine milk samples collected in a very polluted site in Central Italy

Concentrations of 7 polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), 10 polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) and 18 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), including 12 dioxin-like (DL-PCBs) and 6 non-dioxin-like PCBs (NDL-PCBs) were measured in 16 ovine and caprine milk samples collected in the territory of Bussi sul Tirino, central Italy, a Site of National Interest (SNI) due to its high and widespread environmental pollution. All the analyzed samples were compliant with the maximum levels fixed by Commission Regulation (EU) 1259/2011 for the content of PCDD/Fs and the sum of PCDD/Fs and DL-PCBs. In two cases, contamination levels of the sum of PCDD/Fs and DL-PCBs were higher than the action levels fixed by EU Recommendation 663/2014. The statistical analysis, performed by Principal Component Analysis (PCA), revealed that the differences in contamination profiles of the different milk samples were independent of the distance of the farms from the Bussi illegal landfill but likely related to local emission sources influencing the exposure to POPs of studied animals.

PCBs, PCNs, and PCDD/Fs in Soil around an Industrial Park in Northwest China: Levels, Source Apportionment, and Human Health Risk

The concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs), and polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) were determined in soil samples collected around an industrial park in Northwest China, to investigate the potential impacts of park emissions on the surrounding environment. The total concentration ranges of PCBs, PCNs, and PCDD/Fs in the soil samples were in 13.2-1240, 141-832, and 3.60-156 pg/g, respectively. The spatial distribution and congener patterns of PCBs, PCNs, and PCCD/Fs indicated that there might be multiple contamination sources in the study area, so source apportionments of PCBs, PCNs, and PCCD/Fs were performed by a positive matrix factorization model based on the concentrations of all target congeners together. The results revealed that these highly chlorinated congeners (CB-209, CN-75, and OCDF) might be derived from phthalocyanine pigments, the legacy of Halowax 1051 and 2,4-D products, which together contributed nearly half of the total concentration of target compounds (44.5%). In addition to highly chlorinated congeners, the local industrial thermal processes were mainly responsible for the contamination of PCBs, PCNs, and PCDD/Fs in the surrounding soil. The total carcinogenic risk of PCBs, PCNs, and PCDD/Fs in a few soil samples (0.22 × 10-6, 0.32 × 10-6, and 0.40 × 10-6) approached the threshold of potential carcinogenic risk (1.0 × 10-6). Since these pollutants can continuously accumulate in the soil, the contamination of PCBs, PCNs, and PCDD/Fs in surrounding soil deserves continuous attention.

Mapping the Contribution of Biomass Burning to Persistent Organic Pollutants in the Air of the Indo-China Peninsula Based on a Passive Air Monitoring Network

Biomass burning (BB) is an important source of atmospheric persistent organic pollutants (POPs) across the world. However, there are few field-based regional studies regarding the POPs released from BB. Due to the current limitations of emission factors and satellites, the contribution of BB to airborne POPs is still not well understood. In this study, with the simultaneous monitoring of BB biomarkers and POPs based on polyurethane foam-based passive air sampling technique, we mapped the contribution of BB to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in the Indo-China Peninsula. Spearman correlations between levoglucosan and 16 PCBs (r_s = 0.264-0.767, p < 0.05) and 2 OCPs (r_s = 0.250-0.328, p < 0.05) confirmed that BB may facilitate POP emissions. Source apportionment indicated that BB contributed 9.3% to the total PCB and OCP mass. The high contribution of positive matrix factorization-resolved BB to PCBs and OCPs was almost consistent with their concentration distributions in the open BB season but not completely consistent with those in the pre-monsoon and/or monsoon seasons. Their contribution distributions may reflect the use history and geographic distribution in secondary sources of POPs. The field-based contribution dataset of BB to POPs is significant in improving regional BB emission inventories and model prediction.

Spatial distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in dust and soils from informal trade sites in southern Nigeria: Implications for risk and source analysis

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a group of semi-volatile and persistent organic compounds considered priority pollutants because of their pervasive nature and high toxicity to the ecosystem and humans. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the PAH concentrations in dust and soils around informal trade sites (ITS) in Nigeria to determine the level of risk, sources, and significance of these activities to the PAH load of the environment. The 16 US EPA PAHs in dust and soils from ITS were determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The PAH concentrations in dust from these informal trade sites varied from 120 to 8790, 56 to 4780, and 102-1090 μg kg^-1 for automobile mechanic workshops (AMW), car dismantling (CDS), and material recovery sites (MRS), respectively, whereas those of soils ranged from 3000 to 95,500, 554 to 14,700, and 966-25,200 μg kg^-1 for AMW, CDS, and MRS respectively. The PAH profiles indicated that 3- to 5-ring PAHs were prominent in dust and soils around the ITS. The concentrations of the US EPA 16 PAHs in dust and soils from these ITS showed no correlation with organic matter, while the concentrations of PAH homologues in soils of these ITS showed no correlation with those of dust. Incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) values in the magnitude of 10^-4 to 10¹ were obtained for adult and childhood exposure to PAHs in dust and soils from these ITS. Exposure to PAHs in dust from these ITS gives rise to less risk than for soils. The results indicated that automobile mechanic workshops contribute more PAHs to the environment than car dismantling and material recovery activities. The source analysis showed that the PAH contamination of these sites arises from burning of biomass, plastic materials, and oils, and emissions from vehicles.

Distribution, Sources and Risk Assessment of Polychlorinated Biphenyls in Sediments from Beiluo River

The distribution and source of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) pollution in the Beiluo River, the secondary tributary of the Yellow River, still remain unclear. With the purpose of determining the distribution, origins, and pollution levels of PCBs and their consequences on ecological risks, the concentrations of 27 PCBs at 17 locations in the sediments of the Beiluo River were examined in this study. The results showed that the mass concentrations of ∑PCBs in the sediment ranged from 0.12 to 1.25 ng∙g^-1 (DW), with the highest point at sampling site B13 downstream of the river. Compared to most river sediments, both domestically and internationally, the concentration of PCBs in the sediment of the Beiluo River was at a low level, with 10-PCB and 6-PCB as the main components, indicating that the PCBs that are difficult to volatilise and degrade are more likely to remain in the sediment. The origins of PCBs in the sediments of the Beiluo River were examined by using positive matrix factorisation (PMF). The results revealed that the contamination of PCBs in the sediments of the Beiluo River mainly resulted from industrial emissions, technical PCB mixtures, and coal and wood combustion. The results of the ecological risk assessment indicated that PCBs in the sediments of the study area rarely contribute to adverse biological effects and the potential low risk to the environment.

Human health risk surveillance of polychlorinated biphenyls in bovine milk from alluvial plain of Punjab, Pakistan

Punjab is the leading province of Pakistan in the production of bovine milk and its consumption. Rapid industrialization, high energy demand, and the production of waste have increased the risk of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) toxicity in the environment. This research work was designed to assess human dietary exposure of ∑PCBs17 congeners through ingestion of buffalo and cow's milk from eight main districts of Punjab, Pakistan. The average concentrations of ∑DL-PCBs (8.74 ng g^-1 and 14.60 ng g^-1) and ∑I-PCBs (11.54 ng g^-1 and 18.68 ng g^-1) in buffalo and cow milk samples were analyzed, respectively. The PCB-156 was predominantly high congener found in both buffalo (2.84 ng g^-1) and cow milk (2.86 ng g^-1). It was found that the highest PCBs in bovine milk samples were observed in close vicinities of urban and industrial areas. The estimated daily consumptions of DL-PCBs and I-PCBs, from buffalo and cow milk, were below the acceptable daily intake for both adults and children. Moreover, hazard quotients (HQ) of the ∑PCBs17 congener value were less than 1.0 in adults and greater in the case of children reflecting the high chances of cancer. Furthermore, comprehensive monitoring for childhood cancer is recommended to establish the relationship in future studies.

Occurrence and Source Identification of Polychlorinated Dibenzo-p-dioxins and Dibenzofurans and Polychlorinated Biphenyls in Surface Sediments from Liangshui River in Beijing, China

Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans and polychlorinated biphenyls were measured in the surface sediments of Liangshui River, the second largest drainage river in Beijing, China. The sum concentrations of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans and polychlorinated biphenyls ranged from 3.5 to 3019 (mean value: 184) pg g^-1 dry weight and from 319 to 5949 (mean value: 1958) pg g^-1 dry weight, and the corresponding World Health Organization toxic equivalent quantity values were 0.0011-5.1 pg TEQ g^-1 dry weight and 0.0074-1.4 pg TEQ g^-1 dry weight, respectively. The spatial distributions of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans and polychlorinated biphenyls showed increasing trends from urban area and development area to suburb. Principal component analysis revealed that polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans contamination in the sediments may originate from pentachlorophenol and sodium pentachlorophenate and municipal solid waste incineration. Regarding polychlorinated biphenyls, the steel industry, combustion processes and usage of some commercial polychlorinated biphenyl products were identified as the major sources. The emission from a former steel plant could be the main contributor to polychlorinated biphenyls in urban areas. The mean value of the total toxic equivalent quantities in the sediment samples exceeded the Canadian interim sediment quality guidelines. Long-term wastewater irrigation increases the load of sediment-bound pollutants in agricultural soil and may pose potential ecological risks to crops and human health.

Metal-Catalyzed Formation of Organic Pollutants Intermediated by Organic Free Radicals

Metal compounds play important roles in the formation of organic pollutants during thermal-related processes. However, the metal-catalyzed predominant organic pollutants have not previously been characterized nor have any detailed catalytic mechanisms been clarified. Here, we preciously distinguished the multiple organic free radical intermediates on metal catalyst surfaces during the organic pollutant formation through laboratory and theoretical studies. Differences between the organic free radical intermediate species, concentrations, and formation mechanisms under the catalysis of different metal compounds were investigated. The results were verified mutually with the differed characteristics of organic pollutant products. CuO predominantly catalyzed the formation of highly chlorinated phenoxy radical intermediates and dioxins. High proportions of semiquinone radicals and oxygen-containing derivatives were found on ZnO surfaces. Differently, methyl-substituted phenoxy radicals and long-chain products formed on Al₂O₃ surfaces. The results will be instructive for the target emission control of priority organic pollutants during thermal-related processes rich in different metal compounds.

Chemical profiles of PM2.5 emitted from various anthropogenic sources of the Eastern Mediterranean: Cooking, wood burning, and diesel generators

The chemical profiles of PM_2.5 emitted from a non-road diesel generator, wood burning and cooking activities including chicken and beef charcoal grilling and general cooking activities were determined. The characterization included the carbonaceous fraction (OC/EC), water-soluble ions, elements, and organic species comprising n-alkanes, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, carboxylic acids, levoglucosan, dioxins, furans, and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls. The main component in the PM_2.5 from the different sources was carbonaceous matter with a mass contribution to PM_2.5 of 49% for cooking activities, 53% for wood burning, 66% for beef grilling, 72% for chicken grilling, and 74% for diesel generator with different OC/EC concentration ratios. The analysis of organic compounds contents using diagnostic ratios and indexes showed differences between the sources and revealed specific source markers. The water-soluble ions had the highest contribution in the cooking activities profile with 17% of PM_2.5 and the least in the chicken grilling profile (1.1%). Additionally, 29 analyzed elements were identified, and their contribution varied with the sources (ranging from 1% to 11% of PM_2.5). These findings could be used to differentiate these sources and could assist in the use of source apportionment methods.

Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) in the Environment: Occupational and Exposure Events, Effects on Human Health and Fertility

In the last decade or so, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) garnered renewed attention in the scientific community due to new evidence pointing at their continued presence in the environment and workplaces and the potential human risks related to their presence. PCBs move from the environment to humans through different routes; the dominant pathway is the ingestion of contaminated foods (fish, seafood and dairy products), followed by inhalation (both indoor and outdoor air), and, to a lesser extent, dust ingestion and dermal contact. Numerous studies reported the environmental and occupational exposure to these pollutants, deriving from building materials (flame-retardants, plasticizers, paints, caulking compounds, sealants, fluorescent light ballasts, etc.) and electrical equipment. The highest PCBs contaminations were detected in e-waste recycling sites, suggesting the need for the implementation of remediation strategies of such polluted areas to safeguard the health of workers and local populations. Furthermore, a significant correlation between PCB exposure and increased blood PCB concentrations was observed in people working in PCB-contaminated workplaces. Several epidemiological studies suggest that environmental and occupational exposure to high concentrations of PCBs is associated with different health outcomes, such as neuropsychological and neurobehavioral deficits, dementia, immune system dysfunctions, cardiovascular diseases and cancer. In addition, recent studies indicate that PCBs bioaccumulation can reduce fertility, with harmful effects on the reproductive system that can be passed to offspring. In the near future, further studies are needed to assess the real effects of PCBs exposure at low concentrations for prolonged exposure in workplaces and specific indoor environments.

Air Quality Impact Assessment of a Waste-to-Energy Plant: Modelling Results vs. Monitored Data

The impact of the emissions from a municipal Waste-to-Energy (WtE) plant in Northern Italy on local air quality was assessed using the CALMET-CALPUFF atmospheric dispersion modelling system. Model simulations were based on hourly emission rates measured by continuous stack monitoring systems and considered both air quality-regulated pollutants (nitrogen oxides, particulate matter, toxic elements, benzo(a)pyrene), and other trace pollutants typical of WtE plants (dioxins, furans, and mercury). The model results were compared to both long-term observations from the air quality monitoring network and with short-term measurements from dedicated monitoring campaigns in the vicinity of the WtE plant, in both warm and cold season conditions. Modelling and observational results showed that the estimated plant contributions are very limited. This suggests that the observed concentration levels were the result of the contribution of all the sources distributed over the area and that they were not solely driven by the activity of the plant. Estimated contributions from the plant’s emissions were usually at least two orders of magnitudes lower than the ambient levels at the nearest monitoring site and even lower at the farthest sites.

Polybrominated dibenzo-p-dioxins/furans (PBDD/Fs) in soil around municipal solid waste incinerator: A comparison with polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/furans (PCDD/Fs)

Polybrominated dibenzo-p-dioxins/furans (PBDD/Fs) and polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/furans (PCDD/Fs) share similar toxicities and thermal origins, e.g., municipal solid waste incinerator (MSWI). Recently, PBDD/Fs from MSWI attracted rising concern because their important precursors, i.e., brominated flame retardants (BFRs), were frequently found in various wastes for landfill or MSWI feedstock. So far, however, little is known about PBDD/Fs and their associated risks in the vicinal environments of MSWI. Here we analyzed PBDD/Fs and PCDD/Fs in 29 soil samples collected around a multiyear large-scale MSWI, and compared their spatial distributions, sources and risks. PBDD/Fs demonstrated comparable concentrations and toxic equivalent quantities (TEQs) to PCDD/Fs in these samples. Spatially, both the concentrations of PBDD/Fs and PCDD/Fs decreased outwards from the MSWI, and exhibited significant linear correlations with the distances from the MSWI in the southeast downwind soil, suggesting the influence of the MSWI on its vicinal soil environment. However, the existence of other dioxin sources concealed its influence beyond 6 km. PBDD/Fs in the soils were characterized by highly-brominated PBDFs, especially Octa-BDF, and their sources were diagnosed as the MSWI and diesel exhaust; PCDD/Fs, however, were dominated by highly-chlorinated PCDDs, particularly Octa-CDD, and were contributed individually or jointly by the MSWI, automobile exhaust and pentachlorophenol (PCP)/Na-PCP. The non-carcinogenic risks of dioxins in all the soil samples were acceptable, but their carcinogenic risks in 17% of the samples were unacceptable. These samples were all located close to the MSWI and highways, therefore, the land use of these two high-risk zones should be cautiously planed.

Detection of Benzo[a]pyrene Diol Epoxide Adducts to Histidine and Lysine in Serum Albumin In Vivo by High-Resolution-Tandem Mass Spectrometry

Electrophilic diol epoxide metabolites are involved in the carcinogenicity of benzo[a]pyrene, one of the widely studied polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The exposure of humans to this PAH can be assessed by measuring stable blood protein adducts, such as to histidine and lysine in serum albumin, from their reactive metabolites. In this respect, measurement of the adducts originating from the genotoxic (+)-anti-benzo[a]pyrene diol epoxide is of interest. However, these are difficult to measure at such low levels as are expected in humans generally exposed to benzo[a]pyrene from air pollution and the diet. The analytical methods detecting PAH-biomarkers still suffer from low selectivity and/or detectability to enable generation of data for calculation of in vivo doses of specific stereoisomers, for evaluation of risk factors and assessing risk from exposures to PAH. Here, we suggest an analytical methodology based on high-pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) coupled to high-resolution tandem mass spectrometry (MS) to lower the detection limits as well as to increase the selectivity with improvements in both chromatographic separation and mass determination. Method development was performed using serum albumin alkylated in vitro by benzo[a]pyrene diol epoxide isomers. The (+)-anti-benzo[a]pyrene diol epoxide adducts could be chromatographically resolved by using an HPLC column with a pentafluorophenyl stationary phase. Interferences were further diminished by the high mass accuracy and resolving power of Orbitrap MS. The achieved method detection limit for the (+)-anti-benzo[a]pyrene diol epoxide adduct to histidine was approximately 4 amol/mg serum albumin. This adduct as well as the adducts to histidine from (−)-anti- and (+/−)-syn-benzo[a]pyrene diol epoxide were quantified in the samples from benzo[a]pyrene-exposed mice. Corresponding adducts to lysine were also quantified. In human serum albumin, the anti-benzo[a]pyrene diol epoxide adducts to histidine were detected in only two out of twelve samples and at a level of approximately 0.1 fmol/mg.

Partitioning and potential sources of polychlorinated naphthalenes in water-sediment system from the Yangtze River Delta, China

Spatial trends, partitioning behavior, and potential sources of polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs) in water-sediment system from the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) were investigated in this study. The total concentrations of 75 PCNs in water and sediment samples were 0.022-0.310 ng/L and 0.01-1.59 ng/g dry weight, respectively. The homolog patterns in the sediment and water samples were somewhat different. Di-to tetra-CNs made larger contributions in the sediment, while the mono-to tri-CNs were dominant homologs in the water. Overall, the low-chlorinated naphthalenes (mono-to tetra-CNs) were found to be the dominant homologs in the YRD water and sediment samples, and the homolog group contributions to the total PCNs concentrations decreased as the number of chlorine atoms increased. CN-5/7 and CN-24/14 were found at high concentrations in both the water and sediment. Partitioning and transfer of PCNs between water and sediment were assessed by calculating the partition coefficients and fugacity fractions. The partition coefficients showed that PCNs were not in equilibrium status in the water-sediment system, and hydrophobicity played an important role in PCNs partitioning. The fugacity fractions indicated that mono- to tri-CNs had stronger tendencies to escape from the sediment into the water, while the high-chlorinated naphthalenes close to equilibrium. Principal component analysis and correlation analysis indicated that industrial thermal processes and the use and disposal of products containing PCNs industrial products are sources of PCNs in the YRD water-sediment system.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their derivatives (oxygenated PAHs, azaarenes, and sulfur / oxygen-containing heterocyclic PAHs) in surface soils from a typical city, south China

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons derivatives (dPAHs) were reported to be more mutagenic than parent analogues, however, studies that involving dPAHs in environmental samples are still limited. Thirty-six polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs; 17 parent PAHs, 1 alkyl-PAH, 6 oxygenated PAHs, 6 azaarenes, 3 sulfur-containing heterocyclic PAHs, and 3 oxygen-containing heterocyclic PAHs) were analyzed in n = 100 surface soil samples collected from a prefecture-level city (hereafter referred to as D city) in South China, in the year 2019. Total concentrations of 36 PACs ranged from 3.61 to 4930 ng g^-1 with a median concentration of 86.1 ng g^-1. Regardless of functional zones, parent PAHs were the most abundant with the proportion of 78.9%, followed by oxygenated PAHs accounting for 16.8%, whereas contents of heterocyclic PAHs were far below the formers. Besides, PAHs with 4-6 rings were the most prevalent components. Among the five functional zones, industrial zone was contaminated most severely with a mean sum PAC concentration of 485 ng g^-1, implying effects of long-term industrial emission. Total PAC concentrations in scenic and agricultural zones were significantly lower than those in industrial and residential zones. On the basis of PMF calculation, we proposed that traffic emission and biomass combustion could be responsible for PAC contamination. According to total lifetime cancer risk index, it suggested that there could be slightly health risks for children following exposure to PACs in some places.

Source apportionment and risk assessment for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in soils at a typical coking plant

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are widely present in the environment. The coking industry is an important industrial source of PAHs. Coke production in China accounts for 67.44% of total global coke production. Tangshan, a coastal city on the Bohai Rim, contains the largest cluster of coking plants in China. Extremely high PAH emissions in Tangshan may cause long-distance cross-border pollution problems. In this study, the concentrations and sources of 16 priority PAHs in soil at a coking plant in Tangshan were determined and the risks posed by the PAHs were assessed. The PAH concentrations were generally higher in surface soil than subsurface soil, particularly near the coke oven, crude benzol, and coal blending areas. The dibenz[a,h]anthracene (DBA) concentrations were higher than the risk screening value (1500 ngg^-1) but lower than the control value (15,000 ngg^-1) for type II land defined in Chinese standard (GB36600-2018). The main sources of PAHs were coal combustion, the coke oven, and traffic. The PAH concentrations were higher in the ammonium sulfate, boiler room, coal blending, and coke oven areas than in the other areas. Toxic equivalent concentrations were calculated to assess the toxic and carcinogenic risks posed by PAHs. The toxic equivalent concentrations were relatively high in the boiler, crude benzol, and coal blending areas, where the toxic equivalent concentrations for the sums of seven highly carcinogenic PAHs contributed 95% of the toxic equivalent concentrations for the sums of the 16 PAHs that were analyzed. The carcinogenic risks posed to humans were therefore assessed using the concentrations of the seven highly carcinogenic PAHs. Dermal contact was found to be an important exposure pathway leading to carcinogenic risks. The carcinogenic risk posed by DBA was > 1 × 10^-6 but < 5 × 10^-6, indicating that DBA concentrations at the study site monitored closely.

Distribution, sources and exposure risk of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in soils, and indoor and outdoor dust from Port Harcourt city, Nigeria

In this study, we evaluated the concentrations, composition, sources, and potential risks of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in soils, and indoor and outdoor dust from Port Harcourt city in Nigeria. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was used for the detection and quantification of PAH species in the samples. The concentrations of the US EPA 16 PAHs plus 2-methyl-naphthalene (∑17 PAHs) in soils, and indoor and outdoor dust from Port Harcourt city ranged from 240 to 38 400, 276 to 9130 and 44 to 13 200 μg kg^-1 (dry weight, d.w.) respectively. The PAH concentrations in these matrices followed the sequence: soil > indoor dust > outdoor dust. The composition of PAHs in soils and dust (indoor and outdoor) showed remarkable differences with prominence of 3- and 5-ring PAHs. The estimated carcinogenic risk to the residents arising from exposure to these concentrations of PAHs in soils, and indoor and outdoor dust from Port Harcourt was above the acceptable target cancer risk value of 10^-6. We concluded that these sites require clean-up, remedial actions and implementation of stringent pollution control measures with the intention of reducing the undesirable impacts of PAHs on both the ecosystem and humans.

Sources and pollution path identification of PAHs in karst aquifers: an example from Liulin karst water system, northern China

Karst water, with constituting major sources for water supply worldwide, is vulnerable and prone to be polluted. In this study, it is reported that karst water polycylic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) pollution is caused by the infiltration of surface runoff in the bared carbonate areas, which is of universal significance for the protection of groundwater resources in karst region. Hydro-geochemistry, stable isotopes (δD, δ¹⁸O and ⁸⁷Sr/⁸⁶Sr) and characteristic ratio method were conducted together to illustrate the concentration, distribution, sources and pollution path of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in groundwater in the Liulin karst water system of northern China. The results showed that total concentration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons ranged from 39.25 to 16,830 ng/L in groundwater, with Naphthalene being the dominant component, and the median value increased gradually along the flow path. The highest polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons concentrations in karst water were mainly observed in the coal mining and the discharge areas. Based on the characteristic ratios, the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the study area mainly come from local incomplete combustion of woods, fossil fuels, coal and liquid fuels. The slight shift of δD and δ¹⁸O and moderate ⁸⁷Sr/⁸⁶Sr ratios suggest that the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in karst water is mainly polluted by surface runoff during rain events in the bared karst region. The leakage of river water may partly contribute to the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in some karst water, which normally located close to the karst water - river water mixing line. This study provides a new technical method for tracing the sources and identifying the pollution paths of organic pollution in a karst water system.

Spatial Distribution, Bioconversion and Ecological Risk of PCBs and PBDEs in the Surface Sediment of Contaminated Urban Rivers: A Nationwide Study in China

Surface sediments of polluted urban rivers can be a reservoir of hydrophobic persistent organic pollutants (POPs). In this study, we comprehensively assessed the contamination of two groups of POPs, that is, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), in 173 black-odorous urban rivers in China. Spatial distribution of PCBs and PBDEs showed similar patterns but very different contamination levels in surface sediments, that is, average concentrations of 10.73 and 401.16 ng/g dw for the ∑PCBs and ∑PBDEs, respectively. Tetra-/di-CBs and deca-BDE are major PCBs and PBDEs and accounted for 59.11 and 95.11 wt % of the ∑PCBs and ∑PBDEs, respectively. Compared with the persistence of PBDEs, the EF changes of chiral PCBs together with previous cultivation evidence indicated indigenous bioconversion of PCBs in black-odorous urban rivers, particularly the involvement of uncharacterized Dehalococcoidia in PCB dechlorination. Major PCB sources (and their relative contributions) included pigment/painting (25.36%), e-waste (22.92%), metallurgical industry (13.25%), and e-waste/biological degradation process (10.95%). A risk assessment indicated that exposure of resident organisms in urban river sediments to deca-/penta-BDEs could pose a high ecological risk. This study provides the first insight into the contamination, conversion and ecological risk of PCBs and PBDEs in nationwide polluted urban rivers in China.

Evaluation of atmospheric sources of PCDD/Fs, PCBs and PBDEs around an MSWI plant using active and passive air samplers

This study evaluated the spatial distributions and concentrations of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in ambient air around a municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) plant located in eastern China in two sampling campaigns within one year. Twenty high-volume samples and 27 passive air samples were collected from May 2012 to May 2013. The mean sampling rate of the passive sampler was estimated to be 3.8 ± 1.8 m³ d^-1 in summer and autumn, while the mean sampling rate was 2.8 ± 1.0 m³ d^-1 in winter and spring. Hence, the annual mean sampling rate was approximately 3.2 ± 1.4 m³ d^-1. The mean levels of PCDD/Fs, PCBs, PBDEs (excluding BDE-209) and BDE-209 in the passive air samples varied in the ranges of 0.086 ± 0.058-0.76 ± 0.51 pg TEQ m^-3, 39 ± 26-170 ± 120 pg m^-3, 3.3 ± 2.2-36 ± 24 pg m^-3 and 58 ± 39-300 ± 150 pg m^-3, respectively. The levels, congener profiles and spatial distributions of PCDD/Fs, PCBs and PBDEs were investigated. The results showed that the concentrations of PCDD/Fs and PCBs decreased with increasing distance from the emission source and that different sampling sites had slightly different effects. However, this trend was opposite to that observed for PBDEs. Moreover, principal component analysis (PCA) demonstrated that the MSWI emission source was the primary factor for PCDD/Fs in ambient air. Further monitoring should be conducted to evaluate the noticeable impact on the environment and human health due to exposure.

Contamination characteristics of polychlorinated naphthalenes in the agricultural soil of two industrial cities in South Korea

This study investigates the contamination characteristics of polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs) in the rice paddy soils of two industrial cities (Pohang and Ulsan) in South Korea. The paddy soils were collected from 40 sites in the paddy fields near industrial complexes in both cities. The mean concentration of Σ₅₅ PCNs was 145.9 ± 101.7 pg/g and 95.4 ± 41.4 pg/g for the soils in Pohang and Ulsan, respectively. The toxic equivalents (TEQs) of Σ₂₈ PCNs ranged from 0.007 pg-TEQ/g to 0.069 pg-TEQ/g in Pohang, and 0.015 pg-TEQ/g to 0.046 pg-TEQ/g in Ulsan. The PCN profiles were dominated by lower chlorinated homologues such as tetra- and tri-CNs for both cities, which are associated with the historical use of technical products, or more specifically, Halowaxes (HW 1099, 1031, 1013, and 1001). The results of the principal component analysis (PCA) indicate that the historical residues from the technical products contributed to the PCN contamination, but the influence of combustion sources was also observed with a high fraction of combustion-related congeners. Based on this study, we can expect that rice grown in these paddy fields will accumulate PCNs and other combustion-related pollutants, strongly suggesting the necessity for multimedia (e.g., air, soil, water, and rice) monitoring and human exposure assessments of PCNs.

Mutagenic and Cancer Risk Estimation of Particulate Bound Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons from the Emission of Different Biomass Fuels

Smoke samples from combustion of different biomass fuels were analyzed for the particulate bound Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) due to their carcinogenic and mutagenic nature. Out of 16 priority PAHs, 11 PAHs were detected in the emission of fuels, while the remaining 5 PAHs (chrysene, benzo[b]fluoranthene, benzo[k]fluoranthene, indeno[1,2,3-cd]pyrene, and benzo[g,h,i]perylene) were below the detection limit. The highest emission factor for the sum of all the PAHs was found for coal (353.08 mg kg^-1), charcoal (27.28 mg kg^-1), and the various wood types. Emission rates of total PAHs ranged from 0.37 to 5.15 mg h^-1 with the highest value for bituminous coal (5.15 mg h^-1) and lowest for Polyalthia longifolia (0.37 mg h^-1). A cancer risk assessment was done for infants, children, and adults using the incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) model via ingestion, inhalation, and dermal contact pathway. The ILCR values ranged from 10^-11 to 10^-6, and a higher cancer risk was observed for children and adults in comparison to infants. PAH concentrations emitted from biomass emissions shows a direct correlation with mutagenesis to humans, indicating a higher potential for the frameshift mutation as compared to base-pair mutation for dung, bituminous coal, charcoal, Dalbergia sissoo, Psidium guajava, Ziziphus mauritana, Polyalthia longifolia, and Ailanthus trithesa.

The occurrence and sources of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in agricultural soils across China with an emphasis on unintentionally produced PCBs

In addition to being historically intentionally manufactured as commercial products, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) can be unintentionally released as by-products from industrial processes. Recent studies have emphasized the importance of unintentionally produced PCBs (UP-PCBs) and have even identified them as major contributors to atmospheric PCBs. However, little is known about contributions of UP-PCBs in current soils. In this study, all 209 PCB congeners were analyzed in agricultural soils on a national scale to investigate the influence of unintentional sources on Chinese soil. The concentration of Σ₂₀₉PCBs in soils across China was in the range of 64.3-4358 pg/g. Four non-Aroclor congeners, i.e., PCB11, PCB44 + 47+65, PCB68, and PCB209, were dominant among all PCBs, averagely accounting for 26.3%, 8.83%, 3.03%, and 2.80% of total PCBs, respectively. PCB11 and PCB209 were found to be higher in East China, while PCB44 + 47+65 and PCB68 were higher in South China. Their spatial distributions were largely dependent on local sources. The results of source apportionment indicated that the legacy of historically produced and used commercial PCB mixtures was the dominant contributor to seven indicator PCBs in Chinese agricultural soils, especially high-chlorinated congeners. However, unintentional sources (i.e., pigment/paint, combustion-related sources, and polymer sealant), which contributed 57.4% of the total PCBs, are controlling PCB burdens in agricultural soils across China.

Atmospheric particle-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, n-alkanes, hopanes, steranes and trace metals: PM2.5 source identification, individual and cumulative multi-pathway lifetime cancer risk assessment in the urban environment

The occurrence of atmospheric fine particles (PM_2.5)-associated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), trace metals and organic molecular markers was investigated by conducting an intensive sampling campaign at the Eastern Mediterranean urban area of Nicosia (Cyprus). Sixty-two 24-hr PM_2.5 samples were collected and analyzed for fifty parent and alkylated PAHs, twenty-five long chain n-alkanes, seventeen hopanes and twelve steranes used for source apportionment. The same number and kind of samples were analyzed to determine twenty-eight trace metals. Emphasis was given to investigate the air levels of the scarcely monitored although highly carcinogenic PAHs such as dibenzopyrenes, dibenzoanthracenes, 7H-benzo[c]fluorene and 5-methyl-chrysene, not included in the USEPA's sixteen PAH priority list (USEPA-16). UNMIX receptor model was applied to apportion the sources of atmospheric emissions of the determined organic compounds and trace metals and evaluate their daily contributions to the corresponding PM_2.5 associated concentrations. For comparison purposes, principal component analysis with multiple linear regression (PCA/MLR) was also applied and its results are reported. The UNMIX receptor model, compared to PCA/MLR, offered a more precise source profile and more reliable daily mass source distributions by eliminating negative contributions. The individual and cumulative multi-pathway lifetime cancer risk (posed via inhalation, ingestion and dermal contact) by exposure to PM_2.5-associated USEPA-16 listed and non-listed PAHs and selected airborne trace metals (As, Cd, Co, Ni, and Pb) were assessed. To estimate the contribution of each emission source to the total cancer risk, multiple linear regression analysis was performed, using as independent variables the daily source mass contributions and as dependent variables the respective cancer risk units. The estimated total cumulative cancer risk comprising all toxic PAHs, besides those included in the priority list, and metals was higher than the USEPA's threshold by a factor of eight, denoting a potential risk for long-term exposure of a population in the urban environment.

Parent, alkylated, oxygenated and nitrated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in PM2.5 emitted from residential biomass burning and coal combustion: A novel database of 14 heating scenarios

To characterize the emissions of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from residential biomass burning and coal combustion in field environments, smoke samples were collected from the combustion of six types of biomass in heated kangs and four types of coal in traditional stoves and semi-gasifier stoves. The emission factors (EFs) of the total PAH were in the range of 84.5-344 mg/kg for biomass burning, with lower EFs for biomass with higher densities, and in the range of 38.0-206 mg/kg for coal combustion, with lower EFs for coals with higher maturity. Moreover, EFs were lower from high-density biomass fuels (wood trunk, 84.5 ± 11.3 mg/kg) than low-maturity coals (bituminous coal, 206 ± 16.5 mg/kg). Parent, oxygenated, alkylated, and nitrated PAHs accounted for 81.1%, 12.6%, 6.2%, and 0.1%, respectively, of the total-PAH EFs from biomass burning, and 84.7%, 13.8%, 1.4%, and 0.1%, respectively, of the total-PAH EFs from coal combustion. PAH source profiles differed negligibly between biomass fuels but differed significantly between bituminous coal and anthracite coal fuels. The characteristic species of sources were phenanthrene, 9-fluorenone, and 2-nitrobiphenyl for biomass burning, and were phenanthrene, benzo[ghi]perylene, 1,4-naphthoquinone, and 2-nitrobiphenyl for coal combustion. The ratios of benzo[b]fluoranthene/(benzo[b]fluoranthene + benzo[k]fluoranthene) were 0.40-0.45 for biomass burning and 0.89-0.91 for coal combustion, and these significantly different values constitute unique markers for distinguishing these fuels in source apportionment. Benzo[a]pyrene-equivalent factor emissions were 2.79-11.3 mg/kg for biomass and 7.49-41.9 mg/kg for coal, where parent PAHs contributed 92.0%-95.1% from biomass burning and 98.6%-98.8% from coal combustion. Total-PAH emissions from residential heating were 1552 t across Shaanxi province, to which wheat straw (445 t) in biomass burning and bituminous coal (438 t) in coal combustion were the highest contributors. Results from this study provide crucial knowledge for the source identification of PAHs as well as for the design of abatement strategies against pollutant emissions.

Fine Particulate Matter (PM2.5) and Chronic Kidney Disease

The impact of ambient particulate matter (PM) on public health has become a great global concern, which is especially prominent in developing countries. For health purposes, PM is typically defined by size, with the smaller particles having more health impacts. Particles with a diameter <2.5 μm are called PM_2.5. Initial research studies have focused on the impact of PM_2.5 on respiratory and cardiovascular diseases; nevertheless, an increasing number of data suggested that PM_2.5 may affect every organ system in the human body, and the kidney is of no exception. The kidney is vulnerable to particulate matter because most environmental toxins are concentrated by the kidney during filtration. According to the high morbidity and mortality related to chronic kidney disease, it is necessary to determine the effect of PM_2.5 on kidney disease and its mechanism that needs to be identified. To understand the current status of PM_2.5 in the atmosphere and their potential harmful kidney effects in different regions of the world this review article was prepared based on peer-reviewed scientific papers, scientific reports, and database from government organizations published after the year 1998. In this review, we focus on the worldwide epidemiological evidence linking PM_2.5 with chronic kidney disease and the effect of PM_2.5 on the chronic kidney disease (CKD) progression. At the same time, we also discuss the possible mechanisms of PM_2.5 exposure leading to kidney damage, in order to emphasize the contribution of PM_2.5 to kidney damage. A global database on PM_2.5 and kidney disease should be developed to provide new ideas for the prevention and treatment of kidney disease.

Impact of municipal and industrial waste incinerators on PCBs content in the environment

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) have been withdrawn from the market due to their toxicity, bioaccumulation capacity, and persistence. PCBs have been observed to potentially form in combustion processes under appropriate conditions and in the presence of precursors containing chlorine. The study covered a municipal waste incineration plant and an industrial waste incineration plant. The objective of the study was to assess the effect of these objects on PCB accumulation in soil and plants taking into account the distance from the emission object and wind direction. Soil samples were collected from layers: 0-5, 5-10, 10-20, and 20-30 cm. Test plants were collected from the same areas as the soil samples. The highest accumulation of PCBs was found in plants with large leaf area. Around the municipal waste incineration plant, these were Tanacetum vulgare leaves (12.45 ng/g), and around the industrial waste incineration plant–grasses (4.3 ng/g). In the case of soils, the accumulation of PCBs for both kind waste incinerators was similar, reaching approximately 3 ng/g. As the distance from the municipal waste incinerator and industrial waste incinerator increased, the accumulation of PCBs in the soil decreased. For municipal waste incinerator, no effect of wind direction on PCB accumulation in the soil was observed. In the majority of cases, the accumulation of PCBs in soils taken from the leeward side of the industrial waste incinerator was higher than that in soils from the windward side. In soils around the municipal waste incinerator, PCB compounds moved deep into the soil and reached the highest accumulation in the soil layer of 10-20 cm or 20-30 cm. In soils around the industrial waste incinerator, the highest accumulation of PCBs occurred in the soil layer of 0-5 cm.

Differential analysis of FA-NNC, PCA-MLR, and PMF methods applied in source apportionment of PAHs in street dust

Many source apportionment models have been applied to identify pollution sources, and differences often exist in the diagnostic results. The reasons causing these differences have not been fully elucidated. In this study, three receptor models, principal component analysis-multiple linear regression (PCA-MLR), positive matrix factorization (PMF), and factor analysis-nonnegative constraints (FA-NNC), were compared and applied for the analysis of 16 EPA priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) adsorbed in street dust samples from Harbin City (China). The differences in the results were caused by different calculation approaches, including matrix decomposition, variable grouping extraction, and nonnegative constraints, especially between PCA-MLR and the other two models. PCA-MLR has no nonnegative constraints, making PCA-MLR less similar to the real world than the other two. Both PMF and FA-NNC have a nonnegative constraint process, which may be the main reason why their results were much more similar to each other than to those of PCA-MLR. PCA-MLR distinguishes variables into several groups that have the greatest variances from each other, whereas the other two methods find similarities among variables and extract them. In the case study of Harbin City, the contributions of mobile and industrial sources ranged from 47 to 69%, and the contributions of coal and other sources ranged from 30 to 52%. The recognized types of pollution sources were generally equivalent, but the proportional contributions were different. PCA-MLR performed best in calculating contributions, whereas PMF and FA-NNC were better in terms of source diagnosis.

Continuous nationwide atmospheric PCDD/F monitoring network in Taiwan (2006-2016): Variation in concentrations and apportionment of emission sources

Atmospheric polychlorinated-dibenzo-dioxins/dibenzo-furans (PCDD/Fs) remains an important environmental health concern. Although the total emission inventories of PCDD/Fs in Taiwan decreased from 320 to 52.1 g-I-TEQ/year during 2002-2016, the resulting concentrations of atmospheric PCDD/F and distributions in Taiwan are unknown. We, therefore, conducted a comprehensive investigation of spatial and seasonal variations and apportioned potential sources of ambient PCDD/F concentrations in Taiwan-based on 11-year observation data. A total of 1,008 atmospheric PCDD/F samples were collected from 25 air monitoring stations (from seven areas) and 1 background station for 2006-2016. Linear regression was used to model changes in PCDD/F concentrations. Principal component analysis (PCA) and positive matrix factorization (PMF) were used to identify potential contributors. PCDD/F concentrations in the ambient air gradually decreased during the study period, with a median concentration of 28.2 fg I-TEQ/m3 over 11 years. The highest median PCDD/F concentrations were found in the highly industrialized regions of western Taiwan (38.0-43.4 fg I-TEQ/m3). Lower concentrations were found in eastern Taiwan (∼10 fg I-TEQ/m3). Background stations reported the lowest concentrations of PCDD/Fs, with a median concentration of 1.47 fg I-TEQ/m3. Overall, the concentrations of atmospheric PCDD/Fs in Taiwan were higher in winter (13.4-86.7 fg I-TEQ/m3) than in summer (9.65-27.2 fg I-TEQ/m3). The PCA results indicated that PCDD/F profiles varied by both region (industrialized, urbanized, and background areas) and season. The PMF model for the overall data revealed that the major sources of PCDD/Fs were industrial activities (71.2%). However, in less industrialized areas, traffic activities, long-range transport, and open burning were dominant.

Emission characteristics of dl-PCNs, PCDD/Fs, and dl-PCBs from secondary copper metallurgical plants: Control technology and policy

This study investigated the characteristics of dl-PCNs, PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs emitted from two typical secondary copper metallurgical plants processing copper sludge equipped with different sets of air pollution control devices (APCDs). Results indicated that the emission factors of dl-PCNs and PCDD/Fs of plant A are 0.00775 and 1.09 μg TEQ/ton, respectively, which are remarkably lower than those of plant B (3.12, 181 and 25.5 μg TEQ/ton for dl-PCNs, PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs, respectively). Dl-PCNs contributed 0.7-2.7% of total TEQ for flue gases and up to 2.6% of TEQ for ash samples. The TEQ concentration of dl-PCNs in fly ash individually exceeds the regulated level of 1 ng TEQ/g regulated by Taiwan EPA, indicating that emission and discharge of dl-PCNs should be regulated. The combination of semidry scrubber and activated carbon injection (ACI) + baghouse (BH) is effective for simultaneous removals of dl-PCNs and PCDD/Fs in plant A; while the combination of cyclone, secondary combustion chamber, ACI + BH and wet scrubber (WS) is not optimal for removing dl-PCNs, PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs. Memory effect occurring within BH and WS is responsible for low removal efficiencies of these POPs in plant B. This study suggests appropriate APCDs for simultaneous removal of three POP groups and recommends the inclusion of dl-PCNs in emission standard.

Assessment of Air Pollution with Polychlorinated Dibenzodioxins (PCDDs) and Polychlorinated Dibenzofuranes (PCDFs) in Lithuania

Polychlorinated dibenzodioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDD/F) are highly bioavailable in humans, either through direct inhalation or indirectly by trophic transfer from contaminated food or water. The main sources of pollution with PCDD/F include industrial and non-industrial combustion sources, like domestic contaminated wood burning, house fires, burning of leaves from trees, etc. When looking for alternative energy sources and reduced energy costs, solid waste incineration plants are intended to be built in the vicinity of urbanized areas, and thus, the need emerges for examination and prediction of to what extent the solid waste incineration plants might affect the surrounding ecosystem, air pollution, and human health. Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) (or simply PCDD/F congeners) belong to the group of semi-volatile organic compounds with environmental stability and long-range transfer in the ambient air. Dioxin isomers are highly toxic and may have carcinogenic and mutagenic effects in humans. PCDD/F is detected in air, water, sediment, plants and animals. PCDD/F is generally distributed in the particulate phase in ambient air. For solid waste incineration plant emissions, the distribution of PCDD/F particles into particles with a diameter of <10 μm is more than 81% of the total particulate matter, and more than 54% of the PCDD/F is distributed into particles with a diameter of <2.5 μm. The aim of this study is to investigate the sources of PCDD/F, emissions and potential hazards, i.e., a toxic equivalent in Lithuania. The measurements were performed in two largest cities of Lithuania Vilnius and Kaunas, where the level of PCDD/F discovered was from 0.015 to 0.52 pg/m3 and from 0.02 to 0.05 pg/m3, respectively. The sites for the monitoring were selected based on their proximity to the locations of the planned cogeneration power plants in these cities.

Occurrence and sources of PCBs, PCNs, and HCB in the atmosphere at a regional background site in east China: Implications for combustion sources

Multiple types of persistent organic pollutants (POPs), such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs), and hexachlorobenzene (HCB), can be unintentionally released from combustion or thermal industrial processes, which are speculated to be the main sources of these contaminants, as they were banned on production and use since several decades ago. In this study, concentrations and sources of 40 PCBs, 39 PCNs, and HCB were analyzed in air samples collected during the period 2012-2015 at a background site in east China. ΣPCBs, ΣPCNs, and HCB were in the range of 9-341 pg/m³, 6-143 pg/m³, and 14-522 pg/m³, respectively. Seasonal characteristics with high levels in winter and low levels in summer were observed for PCNs and HCB. PCBs also exhibited slightly higher levels in winter. Source apportionment was conducted, using polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) as combustion sources indicator, combined with principal component analysis (PCA) and positive matrix factorization (PMF) model. The results indicated that the legacy of past produced and used commercial PCBs was the dominant contributor (∼56%) to the selected PCBs in the atmosphere in east China. PCNs were mainly emitted from combustion sources (∼64%), whereas HCB almost entirely originated from combustion process (>90%).
