Triolein embedded cellulose acetate membrane as a tool to evaluate sequestration of PAHs in lake sediment core at large temporal scale

Predicting the bioavailability of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in rhizosphere soil using a new novel in situ solid-phase microextraction technique

In situ measurement of the bioavailability of organic pollutants in soil is crucial for understanding their environmental behavior and assessing health risks. Due to the high heterogeneity of soil, microscale determination is crucial for achieving high accuracy, but few methods are available. In this study, microsized probes coated with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) were used to measure the bioavailability of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in soil in situ. The concentrations of PAHs enriched by the PDMS-coated probes correlated well with the results of bioassays using earthworms (R2 = 0.92-0.99) and ryegrass roots (R2 = 0.92-0.99). Compared with other chemical extraction methods, such as n-butanol extraction, the proposed method has advantages such as in situ operation, microvolume analysis, and negligible interference to the soil environment. In the soil rhizosphere zone, PAHs bioavailability decreased in the following order: rhizosphere > near-rhizosphere > far-rhizosphere. The bioavailability of PAHs in soil amended with biochar was also successfully characterized by the proposed method. Thus, this study developed an in situ and microscale method to predict the bioavailability of organic pollutants in contaminated soils and provides new insight into migration and transformation processes in rhizosphere soil.

Sediment core records and impact factors of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in Chinese lakes

Lake sediment is a natural sink for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). PAH sedimentation characteristics and their impact factors of Chinese lakes have mainly been qualitative assessed. However, quantitative impacts of PAH sedimentation from different factors have not been well analyzed. To fill this gap, we screened PAH sedimentation records from the literature, for 51 lakes in China and other regions of the world, to identify historical concentration variation and the impact factors of PAHs in different regions, in lake sediment. The results show that PAH concentrations in the sediment core in the selected Chinese lakes (478 ± 812 ng/g dry weight (dw)) were significantly lower than those in North America (5518 ± 6572 ng/g dw) and Europe (3817 ± 4033 ng/g dw). From 1900 to 2015, most of the lakes in China showed an increasing trend of PAH sedimentation concentrations, with the lakes in Southeastern China showed a decreasing trend of PAH concentration in the period of 2001-2015, which was later than the peak times shown in Western countries (1941-1970). The 2-3-ring PAHs were the main components in the sediment core of Chinese lakes, but the proportion to the total PAHs decreased from 72% in 1900-1940 to 55% in 2001-2015. Generalized additive modeling (GAM) was adopted to simulate the associations between PAH sedimentation records and the impact factors. There are large regional variations of economic and industrial development in China. The impact factors of PAH accumulation in the lake sediments differ in different regions. However, population and the consumption of coal, pesticides, and fertilizer were identified to be the most important impact factors influencing PAH sedimentation. The Chinese government needs to strengthen control measures on pollutant discharge to reduce the anthropogenic impact of PAH sedimentation in lakes.

Dynamic Behaviors of Newly Deposited Atmospheric Heavy Metals in the Soil-Pak Choi System

Dynamic behaviors of the newly deposited atmospheric heavy metals in the soil-pak choi (Brassica chinensis L.) system are investigated by a fully factorial atmospheric exposure experiment using soils exposed to 0.5-year and 1.5-year atmospheric depositions. The results showed approximately 17-87%, 19-64%, and 43-84% of the Cu, Cd, and Pb in pak choi edible parts were contributed from the new depositions, respectively. For the newly deposited metals, foliar uptake was the key pathway of shoot bioaccumulation rather than from root uptake of the deposited metals in soils, resulting in no significant soil contribution differences between pak chois growing in 0.5-year and 1.5-year exposed soils. Indeed, highly bioavailable metals in atmospheric deposition significantly increased the soil plant-bioavailable Cu, Cd, and Pb fractions; however, soil aging resulted in similar percentages of the plant-bioavailable fractions in 0.5-year and 1.5-year exposed soils, which indicated the bioavailability of metals deposited into soils rapidly decreased with aging. The soil aging process of the deposited metals was well fitted with the first-order exponential decay model, and soil organic matter and clay were the major driving factors. Our findings highlight high plant bioaccumulation rates and the rapid soil aging process of newly deposited metals during the plant growth period.

Exploring the influence of concentration fluctuation and matrix effects on a passive sampler of triolein-embedded cellulose acetate membrane measuring polychlorinated biphenyls in water

A membrane of triolein-embedded cellulose acetate membrane (TECAM), as an integrative passive sampler, was applied to adsorb 28 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) from pure water and sea water in order to probe into the influence of concentration fluctuation and water matrix. The results demonstrated the temporal variations of PCBs concentrations in TECAM followed the first-order kinetics model. The periodic refreshment of solution and matrix effects of sea water significantly prolonged the time that PCBs reached equilibrium stage. The refreshment facilitated the uptake mass in TECAM. On the contrary, the matrix effects of sea water and dissolved organic matter (DOM) declined the PCBs absorption to TECAM. The average logK_P values of PCBs in pure water were about 1.2 log unit higher than those in sea water in the experiments that the solution was not refreshed, while the difference of average logK_P values narrowed to 0.3 log unit if the PCBs solutions were periodically refreshed. The correlation between logK_P and logK_OW values fitted the quadratic curve well, which was similar to semi-permeable membrane device (SPMD). The appropriate sampling times (t_94%) ranged from 98.8 to 819 h (mean 500 h) for pure water with refreshment, much longer than those in sea water with refreshment (80.1~410 h, mean 189 h). The t_94% values in the solution with high DOM content increased significantly, up to 409 h. Furthermore,  comparing the two experiments that the spiked pure water and sea water solution were refreshed frequently, the estimated sampling rates (R_s) in pure water (0.154~2.06 L/day with a mean value of 0.605 L/day) were slightly lower than those in sea water (0.292~3.84 L/day with a mean value of 1.69 L/day). However, the R_s values in sea water with DOM declined sharply to 0.042 L/day. Therefore, concentration fluctuation, matrix effect, and DOM contents of sea water evidently posed significant influence on dynamic parameters of TECAM absorption, which would be screened and probed detailed in future.

Eutrophication-induced regime shifts reduced sediment burial ability for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons: Evidence from Lake Taihu in China

Regime shifts from a vegetated state with clear water to a turbid state with high contents of phytoplankton and suspended particles have been found in numerous waters worldwide. The fate and risks of hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs) in such waters may be altered, and the effects on burial ability of HOCs remain unknown. Influences of regime shifts on sediment burial ability for 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) (defined as burial/emission ratio) were investigated based on the evidence from the third largest freshwater lake (Lake Taihu) in China. The results of δ¹³C, δ¹⁵N, atomic ratio of C_org/N, and the content of total organic carbon testing and historical data suggested that the regime shifted abruptly from macrophytes to phytoplankton dominance in Lake Taihu in the late 1980s. The annual burial ability for the PAHs decreased gradually over time by 63.2%-98.9% in the period from 1980 to 2016. Meanwhile, the decrease rates of PAH burial ability varied from -1.65% y^-1 to -2.98% y^-1, depending on the hydrophobicity of the compound. The PAH burial ability varied with the dominant primary producers associated with the trophic level index of the water column. Regime shifts had a stronger influence on the burial ability of PAHs with higher hydrophobicity. This study helps to understand the fate and potential risks of HOCs in waters due to eutrophication-induced regime shifts.

Climate change has weakened the ability of Chinese lakes to bury polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

Burial in sediments is a crucial way to reduce mobilization and risks of hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs), but ability of sediments to bury HOCs may be altered if the environment is changed. Whether the ability of sediments to bury HOCs has been affected by climate change remains largely unclear. We excluded the impacts of anthropogenic emissions and eutrophication from that of climate change, and for the first time found that not only the rising surface air temperature but also the declining wind speed and the reducing days with precipitation had weakened the ability of Chinese lakes to bury 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAHs) by 69.2% ± 9.4%-85.7% ± 3.6% from 1951 to 2017. The relative contributions of the climatic variables to the reduced burial ability depended on the properties of the PAHs, and lakes. Burial ability of the PAHs responded differently to climate change, and was correlated to their volatilization and aqueous solubility, and lake area, catchment area/lake area ratio, and water depth. Our study suggests that not only the rising surface air temperature but also the declining wind speed and the reducing days with precipitation can undermine global efforts to reduce environmental and human exposure to PAHs.

Anthropogenic PAHs in lake sediments: a literature review (2002-2018)

Lake sediments are an important reservoir for toxic and hydrophobic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Monitoring of PAHs in sediment is helpful to understand pollution mechanisms and anthropogenic activities. This study reviews studies of PAHs in lake sediments published during 2002-2018. The studies' findings are analyzed, distributions of PAHs in lake sediments are summarized, and the applicability of lake sediments for tracking changes in PAH emission sources is emphasized. Lake sediments heavily polluted with PAHs are distributed in China, Egypt, the USA, and some urban lakes in Africa. The high levels of PAHs are predominantly associated with human activities such as anthropogenic combustion, petroleum industries, road traffic, and socioeconomic factors. However, the concentrations of sedimentary PAHs in most lakes were below the international guideline values.

Tissue distribution of Ag and oxidative stress responses in the freshwater snail Bellamya aeruginosa exposed to sediment-associated Ag nanoparticles

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are among the most widely used engineered nanomaterials and may eventually accumulate in sediments. Limited information is currently available regarding the toxicity, bioaccumulation and distribution of sediment-associated AgNPs in aquatic organisms. In the present study, a freshwater snail Bellamya aeruginosa was exposed via sediment to commercial Ag particles of four nominal sizes: 20 nm (AgNPs-20), 40 nm (AgNPs-40), 80 nm (AgNPs-80), and < 10 μm (bulk Ag), and to silver nitrate at sub-lethal concentrations (1, 10 and 100 μg Ag/g sediment). Ag burden and biomarkers of oxidative stress were assessed in different tissues of B. aeruginosa: hepatopancreas, gonad, foot and digestive tracts. All five Ag types were available for uptake by B. aeruginosa when spiked into sediment, and Ag accumulation in different tissues presented the following pattern: hepatopancreas > gonad ≈ digestive tracts > foot. Snails accumulated higher levels of Ag from aqueous Ag than from particulate Ag. In contrast, AgNPs-40 and AgNPs-80 treatments occasionally induced higher oxidative stress than aqueous Ag, indicating the significant role of nanoparticle itself in exerting toxicity. Size-dependent toxicity of AgNPs in sediment was also found, with AgNPs-20 showing lower toxicity than other Ag particles. Overall, this study demonstrated that the toxicity of sediment-associated AgNPs to B. aeruginosa varies with size and differs from aqueous Ag.

Application of triolein-embedded cellulose acetate membrane (TECAM) passive sampler to study phase distribution of hexabromocyclododecanes (HBCDs) in sediment

Hexabromocyclododecanes (HBCDs) are a class of widely used brominated flame retardants (BFRs) that exhibit strong hydrophobicity. The ubiquity and persistence of HBCDs in sediment have attracted significant attention because of public health concerns. The environmental fate and ecological risks of HBCDs closely depend on their phase distribution in sediments. However, little information is available regarding the freely dissolved concentrations (C_free) of HBCDs in sediment porewater. In this study, we developed a method to measure C_free of HBCDs in sediment porewater using triolein-embedded cellulose acetate membranes (TECAM). The TECAM-to-water partitioning coefficient (log K_TECAM) was 4.69, 4.77, and 4.63 for α-HBCD, β-HBCD, and γ-HBCD, respectively. In sediments, HBCDs sorbed to the sediment solid phase accounted for more than 99% of the total chemical mass. The dissolved organic carbon (DOC)-water partition coefficient (K_DOC) values were derived from TECAM measurements, and the log K_DOC values ranged from 5.77 to 6.23 for the three HBCD diastereomers, suggesting a strong tendency for HBCDs to sorb to DOC. The high sorption of HBDCs for DOC implies a potential for DOC-facilitated transport which may enhance the environmental mobility of HBCDs.

Precipitation and temperature drive seasonal variation in bioaccumulation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the planktonic food webs of a subtropical shallow eutrophic lake in China

Hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs) are toxic and ubiquitous in aquatic environments and pose great risks to aquatic organisms. Bioaccumulation by plankton is the first step for HOCs to enter aquatic food webs. Trophic status is considered to dominate variations in bioaccumulation of HOCs in plankton in temperate and frigid deep oligotrophic waters. However, long-term driving factors for bioaccumulation of HOCs in planktonic food webs of subtropical shallow eutrophic waters have not been well investigated. China has the largest subtropical lake density in the Northern Hemisphere. Due to limited field data, long-term variations in the bioaccumulation of HOCs in these lakes are almost unknown. Here we take Lake Xuanwu as an example to investigate long-term variations in the bioaccumulation, and biomagnification of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAHs) in planktonic food webs of subtropical shallow eutrophic lakes in China, and elucidate the driving factors. Our results indicate that temperature rather than nutrients dominates long-term dynamics of planktonic biomass in this lake. Precipitation significantly enhances the concentrations of the PAHs, and total suspended particles, and consequently affects the distribution of the PAHs in the water column. Biomass dilution induced by temperature dominates bioaccumulation of the PAHs by both phytoplankton and zooplankton (copepods and cladocerans). Biomagnification of the PAHs from phytoplankton to zooplankton is positively correlated with temperature. Our study suggests that temperature and precipitation drive long-term variations in the bioaccumulation of the PAHs in the planktonic food webs of this subtropical shallow eutrophic lake. Lake Xuanwu has a similar mean annual temperature, annual precipitation, sunshine duration, and nutrient levels as other subtropical shallow eutrophic lakes in China. This study may also help to understand the bioaccumulation of HOCs in planktonic food webs of other subtropical shallow eutrophic lakes.

Using linoleic acid embedded cellulose acetate membranes to in situ monitor polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in lakes and predict their bioavailability to submerged macrophytes

To date no passive sampler has been used to predict bioavailability of contaminants to macrophytes. Here a novel passive sampler, linoleic acid embedded cellulose acetate membrane (LAECAM), was developed and used to in situ measure the freely dissolved concentrations of ten polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the sediment porewaters and the water columns of two lakes in both winter and summer and predict their bioavailability to the shoots of resident submerged macrophytes (Potamogeton malainus, Myriophyllum spicata, Najas minor All., and Vallisneria natans (Lour.) Hara). PAH sampling by LAECAMs could reach equilibrium within 21 days. The influence of temperature on LAECAM-water partition coefficients was 0.0008-0.0116 log units/°C. The method of LAECAM was comparable with the active sampling methods of liquid-liquid extraction combined with fDOC adjustment, centrifugation/solid-phase extraction (SPE), and filtration/SPE but had several advantages. After lipid normalization, concentrations of the PAHs in LAECAMs were not significantly different from those in the macrophytes. In contrast, concentrations of the PAHs in the triolein containing passive sampler (TECAM) deployed simultaneously with LAECAM were much higher. The results suggest that linoleic acid is more suitable than triolein as the model lipid for passive samplers to predict bioavailability of PAHs to submerged macrophytes.

Effects of metals on the uptake of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons by the cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa

Effects of Cu(2+), Zn(2+), Cd(2+), and Ag(+) on the uptake of phenanthrene, pyrene, and benzo[a]pyrene by Microcystis aeruginosa were investigated. A biomimic passive sampler, triolein embedded cellulose acetate membrane (TECAM) was used to help to study the related mechanisms. The facilitation effects of the metals on the uptake of the PAHs by M. aeruginosa increased with the softness order of the metals (Zn(2+)≈Cd(2+)<Cu(2+)<Ag(+)) and the π donor strength of the PAHs (phenanthrene<pyrene<benzo[a]pyrene). The cation-π interactions between Cu(2+), Ag(+) and the PAHs increased the freely dissolved concentrations of the PAHs, and consequently their uptake by M. aeruginosa. The increase in aromaticity of dissolved organic matter (DOM) caused by Cu(2+), and Ag(+) also enhanced the uptake of the PAHs. The facilitation effects of Cu(2+), and Ag(+) exceeded their toxic effects, uptake of the PAHs was thereby enhanced. In the presence of Zn(2+), and Cd(2+), no cation-π interactions between Zn(2+), Cd(2+) and the PAHs formed in solutions. Aromaticity of DOM was reduced, the diffusive mass transfer of the PAHs was not enhanced. Uptake of the PAHs was thereby reduced. This study suggests that uptake of PAHs by phytoplankton can be significantly influenced by the properties of both metals and PAHs, which will help to understand the fate and risks of PAHs in eutrophic waters co-contaminated with metals.

Biological risk and pollution history of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Nansha mangrove, South China

Chinese government has taken various measures to alleviate pollution caused by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the region of Pearl River Delta since the economic reform in 1978, but the effectiveness of these measures remains largely unknown. This study aimed to elucidate the biological risk and pollution history of PAHs by measuring the concentrations of 28 PAHs in the surface and core sediments, respectively, in Nansha mangrove. Results found that the biological risk of PAHs was low without obvious spatial variation. The PAH concentration along the depth gradient indicated that PAH pollution was stabilized since the early 1990s while the source of PAHs has gradually changed from combustion of coal to petroleum products. This implied that the mitigation measures taken by the Chinese government were effective. Compared to marine bottom sediment, we propose that using mangrove sediment can provide a more accurate and precise estimate of pollution history of PAHs.

Responses of kinetics and capacity of phenanthrene sorption on sediments to soil organic matter releasing

Soil organic matter (SOM) releasing with dissolved organic matter (DOM) formed in solution was confirmed in a sediment/water system, and the effects of SOM releasing on the sorption of phenanthrene on sediments were investigated. Inorganic salt (0-0.1 mol L(-1) NaCl) was used to adjust SOM releasing, and two sediments were prepared, the raw sediment (S1) from Weihe River, Shann'xi, China, and the eluted sediments with and without DOM supernatant remained, termed as S2a and S2b, respectively. The FTIR and (1)H NMR analysis indicate that the low molecular weight hydrophilic SOM fraction released prior to the high molecular weight hydrophobic fraction. As a response, phenanthrene sorption kinetics on S1 showed atypical and expressed as three stages: rapid sorption, pseudo sorption with partial desorption, and slow sorption, thus a defined "sorption valley" occurred in kinetic curve. In all cases, partition dominates the sorption, and sorption capacity (Kd) ranked as S2b > S1 > S2a. Compared with the alterations of sediment characters, DOM solubilization produced by SOM releasing exhibited a greater inhibitory effect on sorption with a relative contribution of 0.67. Distribution coefficients (K(doc)) of PHE into DOM clusters were 2.10 × 10(4)-4.18 × 10(4) L kg(-1), however a threshold concentration of 6.83 mg L(-1) existed in DOM solubilization. The study results will help to clarify PAHs transport and their biological fate in a sediment/water system.

Historical records of organic pollutants in sediment cores

Analyses of sediment core samples are primary sources of historical pollution trends in aquatic systems. Determining organic compounds, such as POPs, in the dated sediments enables the estimation of their temporal concentration changes and the identification of the contaminant origin in local regions. Wars, large-scale fires, economical transitions, and bans on certain chemicals are reflected in the sediment organic compound concentrations. The high POP concentrations in surficial sediments suggest that these chemicals, even after being banned, remain in the environment. Furthermore, vertical profiles can help in understanding the sedimentation process and in estimating effective countermeasures against pollution. Moreover, studies published during the period 1991-2013 on PAHs, PCBs, OCPs, dioxins and dioxin-like compound concentrations in sediment core samples are reviewed.

Different effects of copper (II), cadmium (II) and phosphate on the sorption of phenanthrene on the biomass of cyanobacteria

Due to the large surface area and high organic carbon content of cyanobacteria, organic contaminants can be readily sorbed on cyanobacteria during algal blooms, and then be transferred to the food web. This process is likely to be affected by the coexisting metals and nutrients, however, the possible impacts remain unclear. Effects of Cu(2+), Cd(2+), and phosphate on the sorption of phenanthrene on cyanobacterial biomass collected from an algal bloom were therefore studied. Continuous decrease in phenanthrene sorption was observed in the presence of low concentrations of Cu(2+), and Cd(2+) (<0.04 mmol L(-1)), because Cu(2+) and Cd(2+) were coadsorbed with phenanthrene on the surface of cyanobacteria as suggested by scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analyses. Phenanthrene sorption began to increase with the further increase in Cu(2+) concentration, but remained lower than that in the absence of Cu(2+). This increase in sorption was ascribed to the cation-π interaction between Cu(2+) and phenanthrene, as suggested by the enhanced ultraviolet absorbance at 251 nm. In contrast, sorption rebounding of phenanthrene did not occur in the presence of higher concentrations of Cd(2+). The different effects of Cu(2+) and Cd(2+) on phenanthrene sorption were attributed to that Cd(2+) required much more energy than Cu(2+) to form cation-π complexes with phenanthrene in the solutions. Phenanthrene sorption decreased continuously with the increase in phosphate concentration. Phosphate blocked the binding sites, modified the cell morphology, and increased the negative charge as well as the hydrophilicity of the cyanobacterial surface, thereby suppressing phenanthrene sorption. This study indicates that sorption of aromatic organic compounds by cyanobacteria could be significantly alerted by concentrations and properties of the coexisting transition metals and phosphates, which may subsequently affect their transfer to the food web in eutrophic waters.
