Unusual and Highly Tunable Missing-Linker Defects in Zirconium Metal–Organic Framework UiO-66 and Their Important Effects on Gas Adsorption

Tailoring the Electrochemical Responses of MOF-74 Via Dual-Defect Engineering for Superior Energy Storage

Rationally designed defects in a crystal can confer unique properties. This study showcases a novel dual-defects engineering strategy to tailor the electrochemical response of metal-organic framework (MOF) materials used for electrochemical energy storage. Salicylic acid (SA) is identified as an effective modulator to control MOF-74 growth and induce structural defects, and cobalt cation doping is adopted for introducing a second type of defect. The resulting dual-defects engineered bimetallic MOF exhibits a discharging capacity of 218.6 mAh g-1, 4.4 times that of the pristine MOF-74, and significantly improved cycling stability. Moreover, the engineered MOF-74(Ni0.675Co0.325)-8//Zn aqueous battery shows top energy/power density performances for Ni-Zn batteries (266.5 Wh kg-1, 17.22 kW kg-1). Comprehensive investigations reveal that engineered defects modify the local coordination environment and promote the in situ electrochemical reconfiguration during operation to significantly boost the electrochemical activity. This work suggests that rational tailoring of the defects within the MOF crystal is an effective strategy to manipulate the coordination environment of the metal centers and the corresponding electrochemical reconfiguration for electrochemical applications.

Synthetic and analytical considerations for the preparation of amorphous metal-organic frameworks

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are hybrid porous materials presenting several tuneable properties, allowing them to be utilised for a wide range of applications. To date, focus has been on the preparation of novel crystalline MOFs for specific applications. Recently, interest in amorphous MOFs (aMOFs), defined by their lack of correlated long-range order, is growing. This is due to their potential favourable properties compared to their crystalline equivalents, including increased defect concentration, improved processability and gas separation ability. Direct synthesis of these disordered materials presents an alternative method of preparation to post-synthetic amorphisation of a crystalline framework, potentially allowing for the preparation of aMOFs with varying compositions and structures, and very different properties to crystalline MOFs. This perspective summarises current literature on directly synthesised aMOFs, and proposes methods that could be utilised to modify existing syntheses for crystalline MOFs to form their amorphous counterparts. It outlines parameters that could discourage the ordering of crystalline MOFs, before examining the potential properties that could emerge. Methodologies of structural characterisation are discussed, in addition to the necessary analyses required to define a topologically amorphous structure.

Chemistries and materials for atmospheric water harvesting

Atmospheric water harvesting (AWH) is recognized as a crucial strategy to address the global challenge of water scarcity by tapping into the vast reserves of atmospheric moisture for potable water supply. Within this domain, sorbents lie in the core of AWH technologies as they possess broad adaptability across a wide spectrum of humidity levels, underpinned by the cyclic sorption and desorption processes of sorbents, necessitating a multi-scale viewpoint regarding the rational material and chemical selection and design. This Invited Review delves into the essential sorption mechanisms observed across various classes of sorbent systems, emphasizing the water-sorbent interactions and the progression of water networks. A special focus is placed on the insights derived from isotherm profiles, which elucidate sorbent structures and sorption dynamics. From these foundational principles, we derive material and chemical design guidelines and identify key tuning factors from a structural-functional perspective across multiple material systems, addressing their fundamental chemistries and unique attributes. The review further navigates through system-level design considerations to optimize water production efficiency. This review aims to equip researchers in the field of AWH with a thorough understanding of the water-sorbent interactions, material design principles, and system-level considerations essential for advancing this technology.

Emerging Doped Metal-Organic Frameworks: Recent Progress in Synthesis, Applications, and First-Principles Calculations

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are crystalline porous materials with a long-range ordered structure and excellent specific surface area and have found a wide range of applications in diverse fields, such as catalysis, energy storage, sensing, and biomedicine. However, their poor electrical conductivity and chemical stability, low capacity, and weak adhesion to substrates have greatly limited their performance. Doping has emerged as a unique strategy to mitigate the issues. In this review, the concept, classification, and characterization methods of doped MOFs are first introduced, and recent progress in the synthesis and applications of doped MOFs, as well as the rapid advancements and applications of first-principles calculations based on the density functional theory (DFT) in unraveling the mechanistic origin of the enhanced performance are summarized. Finally, a perspective is included to highlight the key challenges in doping MOF materials and an outlook is provided on future research directions.

Adsorption properties of M-UiO-66 (M = Zr(IV); Hf(IV) or Ce(IV)) with BDC or PDC linker

The increasing CO2 emissions and their direct impact on climate change due to the greenhouse effect are environmental issues that must be solved as soon as possible. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are one class of crystalline adsorbent materials that are thought to have enormous potential in CO2 capture applications. In this research, the effect of changing the metal center between Zr(IV), Ce(IV), and Hf(IV), and the linker between BDC and PDC has been fully studied. Thus, the six UiO-66 isoreticular derivatives have been synthesized and characterized by FTIR, PXRD, TGA, and N2 adsorption. We also report the BET surface area, CO2 adsorption capacities, kinetics, and the adsorption isosteric heat (Qst) of the UiO-66 derivatives mentioned family. The CO2 adsorption kinetics were evaluated using pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order, Avrami's kinetic models, and the rate-limiting step with Boyd's film diffusion, interparticle diffusion, and intraparticle diffusion models. The isosteric heats of CO2 adsorption using various MOFs are in the range 20-65 kJ mol-1 observing differences in adsorption capacities between 1.15 and 4.72 mmol g-1 at different temperatures due to the electrostatic interactions between CO2 and extra-framework metal ions. The isosteric heat of adsorption calculation in this report, which accounts for the unexpectedly high heat released from Zr-UiO-66-PDC, is finally represented as an increase in the interaction of CO2 with the PDC linker and an increase in Qst with defects.

Bells and Whistles on Fertilizers: Molecular Hands to Hang Nanoporous Foliar Fertilizer Reservoirs

Porous materials are highly explored platforms for fertilizer delivery. Among porous materials, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are an important class of coordination polymers in which metal ions and organic electron donors as linkers are assembled to form crystalline structures with stable nanoporosity. Selected amino acids were inherently found to have the capacity to hold the leaf cuticle. Hence, MOF synthesis was attempted in the presence of amino acids, which can act as surface terminators and can assist as hands to hold to the leaf for a controlled nutrient supply. By serendipity, the amino acids were found to act as modulators, resulting in well-stabilized porous MOF structures with iron metal nodes, which are often noted to be unstable. Thus, the composite, i.e., (MOF@aa) MOF modulated with amino acids, has efficient nutrient-feeding ability through the foliar route when compared to the control.

Quantifying the Uncertainty of Force Field Selection on Adsorption Predictions in MOFs

Comparisons between simulated and experimental adsorption isotherms in MOFs are fraught with challenges. On the experimental side, there is significant variation between isotherms measured on the same system, with a significant percentage (∼20%) of published data being considered outliers. On the simulation side, force fields are often chosen "off-the-shelf" with little or no validation. The effect of this choice on the reliability of simulated adsorption predictions has not yet been rigorously quantified. In this work, we fill this gap by systematically quantifying the uncertainty arising from force field selection on adsorption isotherm predictions. We choose methane adsorption, where electrostatic interactions are negligible, to independently study the effect of the framework Lennard-Jones parameters on a series of prototypical materials that represent the most widely studied MOF "families". Using this information, we compute an adsorption "consensus isotherm" from simulations, including a quantification of uncertainty, and compare it against a manually curated set of experimental data from the literature. By considering many experimental isotherms measured by different groups and eliminating outliers in the data using statistical analysis, we conduct a rigorous comparison that avoids the pitfalls of the standard approach of comparing simulation predictions to a single experimental data set. Our results show that (1) the uncertainty in simulated isotherms can be as large as 15% and (2) standard force fields can provide reliable predictions for some systems but can fail dramatically for others, highlighting systematic shortcomings in those models. Based on this, we offer recommendations for future simulation studies of adsorption, including high-throughput computational screening of MOFs.

Exploring Defect-Engineered Metal-Organic Frameworks with 1,2,4-Triazolyl Isophthalate and Benzoate Linkers

Synthesis and characterization of DEMOFs (defect-engineered metal-organic frameworks) with coordinatively unsaturated sites (CUSs) for gas adsorption, catalysis, and separation are reported. We use the mixed-linker approach to introduce defects in Cu2-paddle wheel units of MOFs [Cu2(Me-trz-ia)2] by replacing up to 7% of the 3-methyl-triazolyl isophthalate linker (1L2-) with the "defective linker" 3-methyl-triazolyl m-benzoate (2L-), causing uncoordinated equatorial sites. PXRD of DEMOFs shows broadened reflections; IR and Raman analysis demonstrates only marginal changes as compared to the regular MOF (ReMOF, without a defective linker). The concentration of the integrated defective linker in DEMOFs is determined by 1H NMR and HPLC, while PXRD patterns reveal that DEMOFs maintain phase purity and crystallinity. Combined XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) and cw EPR (continuous wave electron paramagnetic resonance) spectroscopy analyses provide insights into the local structure of defective sites and charge balance, suggesting the presence of two types of defects. Notably, an increase in CuI concentration is observed with incorporation of defective linkers, correlating with the elevated isosteric heat of adsorption (ΔHads). Overall, this approach offers valuable insights into the creation and evolution of CUSs within MOFs through the integration of defective linkers.

Metalation of metal-organic frameworks: fundamentals and applications

Metalation of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has been developed as a prominent strategy for materials functionalization for pore chemistry modulation and property optimization. By introducing exotic metal ions/complexes/nanoparticles onto/into the parent framework, many metallized MOFs have exhibited significantly improved performance in a wide range of applications. In this review, we focus on the research progress in the metalation of metal-organic frameworks during the last five years, spanning the design principles, synthetic strategies, and potential applications. Based on the crystal engineering principles, a minor change in the MOF composition through metalation would lead to leveraged variation of properties. This review starts from the general strategies established for the incorporation of metal species within MOFs, followed by the design principles to graft the desired functionality while maintaining the porosity of frameworks. Facile metalation has contributed a great number of bespoke materials with excellent performance, and we summarize their applications in gas adsorption and separation, heterogeneous catalysis, detection and sensing, and energy storage and conversion. The underlying mechanisms are also investigated by state-of-the-art techniques and analyzed for gaining insight into the structure-property relationships, which would in turn facilitate the further development of design principles. Finally, the current challenges and opportunities in MOF metalation have been discussed, and the promising future directions for customizing the next-generation advanced materials have been outlined as well.

Simultaneous size and defect control of metal-organic framework by deep eutectic solvent for efficient perfluoroalkyl substances adsorption: Delving into mechanism

This study reports an environment-friendly protocol to prepare a metal-organic framework (MOF) with simultaneously controlled particle size and open metal site for adsorption removal of perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs). The successful preparation of UiO-66 with defect and crystal size modulation was achieved using a green and straightforward method, adjusting the components and molar ratios of ammonium salt/glycolic acid deep eutectic solvents (DESs). The corresponding modulation mechanism primarily relied on the combined regulation of the deprotonation and competitive coordination abilities of the eutectic solvent components. The adsorption process was thoroughly examined using spectral analyses, adsorption behavior profiling, and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. The results revealed that PFAS adsorption is driven by combined capturing effects, such as CF-π, acid/base coordination, C-F⋯Zr, hydrogen bonding, and hydrophobic interactions. Our findings were not thus that the smaller the crystal size of MOF and the higher the defect concentration in the material, the better the PFAS adsorption performance. The result demonstrated the combined effect of these adsorbent features on PFAS mixtures. Furthermore, they revealed unique differences in sorption properties between these targets with different carbon chain lengths. Extensive defects in DES-based UiO-66 led to larger pores, increasing the availability of many adsorption sites and aiding in PFAS adsorption and diffusion. Nevertheless, the surplus of larger pores in the substance increased the competitive adsorption, reducing the total quantity of PFASs absorbed. Furthermore, various interactions and a less restrictive configuration increased the contact of functional groups with adsorbates, substantially enhancing the adsorption. This study investigates the basic questions about how PFAS molecules are adsorbed on DES-based MOFs and the relationship among the structure, properties, and performance to improve the efficiency of this novel adsorbent.

Porous ionic liquids for oxidative desulfurization influenced by electrostatic solvent effect

Developing a highly efficient strategy for the stabilization of the solid-liquid interface is a persistent pursuit for researchers. Herein, porous ionic liquids based on UiO-66 (Zr) porous materials were synthesized and applied to the selective desulfurization catalysis, which integrates the permanent pores of porous solids with the exceptional properties of ionic liquids. Results show that porous ionic liquids possess high activity and selectivity for dibenzothiophene. Experimental analysis and density functional theory calculations revealed that the ionic liquids moiety served as an extractant to enrich dibenzothiophene into the porous ionic liquids phase through the π···π and CH···π interactions. Additionally, the electrostatic solvent effect in the porous ionic liquids contributes to the stabilization solid-liquid interface, which was favorable for UiO-66 moiety to catalytically activate hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) to generate ·OH radicals, and subsequently oxidized dibenzothiophene to the corresponding sulfone. It is hoped that the development of porous ionic liquids could pave a new route to the stabilization of the solid-liquid interface for catalytic oxidation.

Engineering Porosity and Functionality in a Robust Twofold Interpenetrated Bismuth-Based MOF: Toward a Porous, Stable, and Photoactive Material

Defect engineering in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has gained worldwide research traction, as it offers tools to tune the properties of MOFs. Herein, we report a novel 2-fold interpenetrated Bi-based MOF made of a tritopic flexible organic linker, followed by missing-linker defect engineering. This procedure creates a gradually augmented micro- and mesoporosity in the parent (originally nonporous) network. The resulting MOFs can tolerate a remarkable extent of linker vacancy (with absence of up to 60% of linkers per Bi node) created by altering the crystal-growth rate as a function of synthesis temperature and duration. Owing to the enhanced porosity and availability of the uncoordinated Lewis acidic Bi sites, the defect-engineered MOFs manifested improved surface areas, augmented CO2 and water vapor uptake, and catalytic activity. Parallel to this, the impact of defect engineering on the optoelectronic properties of these MOFs has also been studied, offering avenues for new applications.

Amino-Functionalizing Ce-Based MOF UiO-66 for Enhanced CO2 Adsorption and Selectivity

Metal-organic frameworks (MOF) hold great promise for CO2 adsorption due to their high surface areas, tunable pore sizes, and the ability to modify their chemical properties to enhance CO2 affinity. MOFs tagged with functional groups either at linker or metal sites have shown improved CO2 uptake capacity and selectivity. This study focuses on investigating the potential of selective CO2 adsorption using amino functionalization of linker forming Ce-UiO-66. The physicochemical properties and characteristics of MOFs to determine the degree of amino functionalization and structural stability were examined using powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), Fourier transformer infra-red (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and N2 porosimetry and specific surface area (BET). This work unveils a novel array of results on CO2, N2 and water vapour adsorption on Ce-UiO-66-NH2. The amino-functionalized Ce-UiO-66-NH2 shows 63 % higher CO2 uptake and 84 % higher CO2/N2 selectivity at 273 K and 1 bar over Ce-UiO-66. Ce-UiO-66-NH2 also shows excellent structural stability after gas and vapour sorption making Ce-UiO-66-NH2 potential adsorbent for CO2 capture.

Improving the removal efficiency of oxygenated volatile organic compounds by defective UiO-66 regulated with water

The purification of oxygenated volatile organic compounds VOCs (OVOCs), important precursors of ozone and particulate matters, has triggered intensive research interests. UiO-66 with high photocatalytic activity have shown great potential. However, the lack of active sites severely limited the trapping and degradation of OVOCs. Herein, reo-UiO-66 with increased specific surface area, hierarchical porous structure and tunable acidic/basic sites was synthesized by simply adding water as the modulator. XRD, TGA and FTIR results confirmed the formation of reo-defects, which significantly affected the surface hydrophilicity and active sites of UiO-66. The adsorption of Lewis acidic acetaldehyde was enhanced by 265 times with coordinative unsaturated Zr acting as the dominant adsorption sites. The degradation efficiency of typical OVOCs (acetaldehyde and acetone) increased from 0% and 25% to 50% and 73%, respectively. This work provided a facile method to modulate the micro-environment in MOFs for the efficient capture and catalytic purification of OVOCs.

Phase Engineering of Zirconium MOFs Enables Efficient Osmotic Energy Conversion: Structural Evolution Unveiled by Direct Imaging

Creating structural defects in a controlled manner within metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) poses a significant challenge for synthesis, and concurrently, identifying the types and distributions of these defects is also a formidable task for characterization. In this study, we demonstrate that by employing 2-sulfonylterephthalic acid as the ligand for synthesizing Zr (or Hf)-based MOFs, a crystal phase transformation from the common fcu topology to the rare jmt topology can be easily facilitated using a straightforward mixed-solvent strategy. The jmt phase, characterized by an extensively open framework, can be considered a derivative of the fcu phase, generated through the introduction of missing-cluster defects. We have explicitly identified both MOF phases, their intermediate states, and the novel core-shell structures they form using ultralow-dose high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. In addition to facilitating phase engineering, the incorporation of sulfonic groups in MOFs imparts ionic selectivity, making them applicable for osmotic energy harvesting through mixed matrix membrane fabrication. The membrane containing the jmt-phase MOF exhibits an exceptionally high peak power density of 10.08 W m-2 under a 50-fold salinity gradient (NaCl: 0.5 M|0.01 M), which surpasses the threshold of 5 W m-2 for commercial applications and can be attributed to the combination of large pore size, extensive porosity, and abundant sulfonic groups in this novel MOF material.

Metal-Organic Framework (MOF)-Based Clean Energy Conversion: Recent Advances in Unlocking its Underlying Mechanisms

Carbon neutrality is an important goal for humanity . As an eco-friendly technology, electrocatalytic clean energy conversion technology has emerged in the 21st century. Currently, metal-organic framework (MOF)-based electrocatalysis, including oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR), carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR), nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR), are the mainstream energy catalytic reactions, which are driven by electrocatalysis. In this paper, the current advanced characterizations for the analyses of MOF-based electrocatalytic energy reactions have been described in details, such as density function theory (DFT), machine learning, operando/in situ characterization, which provide in-depth analyses of the reaction mechanisms related to the above reactions reported in the past years. The practical applications that have been developed for some of the responses that are of application values, such as fuel cells, metal-air batteries, and water splitting have also been demonstrated. This paper aims to maximize the potential of MOF-based electrocatalysts in the field of energy catalysis, and to shed light on the development of current intense energy situations.

Scaling-Up Microwave-Assisted Synthesis of Highly Defective Pd@UiO-66-NH2 Catalysts for Selective Olefin Hydrogenation under Ambient Conditions

The need to develop green and cost-effective industrial catalytic processes has led to growing interest in preparing more robust, efficient, and selective heterogeneous catalysts at a large scale. In this regard, microwave-assisted synthesis is a fast method for fabricating heterogeneous catalysts (including metal oxides, zeolites, metal-organic frameworks, and supported metal nanoparticles) with enhanced catalytic properties, enabling synthesis scale-up. Herein, the synthesis of nanosized UiO-66-NH2 was optimized via a microwave-assisted hydrothermal method to obtain defective matrices essential for the stabilization of metal nanoparticles, promoting catalytically active sites for hydrogenation reactions (760 kg·m-3·day-1 space time yield, STY). Then, this protocol was scaled up in a multimodal microwave reactor, reaching 86% yield (ca. 1 g, 1450 kg·m-3·day-1 STY) in only 30 min. Afterward, Pd nanoparticles were formed in situ decorating the nanoMOF by an effective and fast microwave-assisted hydrothermal method, resulting in the formation of Pd@UiO-66-NH2 composites. Both the localization and oxidation states of Pd nanoparticles (NPs) in the MOF were achieved using high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), respectively. The optimal composite, loaded with 1.7 wt % Pd, exhibited an extraordinary catalytic activity (>95% yield, 100% selectivity) under mild conditions (1 bar H2, 25 °C, 1 h reaction time), not only in the selective hydrogenation of a variety of single alkenes (1-hexene, 1-octene, 1-tridecene, cyclohexene, and tetraphenyl ethylene) but also in the conversion of a complex mixture of alkenes (i.e., 1-hexene, 1-tridecene, and anethole). The results showed a powerful interaction and synergy between the active phase (Pd NPs) and the catalytic porous scaffold (UiO-66-NH2), which are essential for the selectivity and recyclability.

Highly defective ultra-small tetravalent MOF nanocrystals

The size and defects in crystalline inorganic materials are of importance in many applications, particularly catalysis, as it often results in enhanced/emerging properties. So far, applying the strategy of modulation chemistry has been unable to afford high-quality functional Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) nanocrystals with minimized size while exhibiting maximized defects. We report here a general sustainable strategy for the design of highly defective and ultra-small tetravalent MOFs (Zr, Hf) crystals (ca. 35% missing linker, 4-6 nm). Advanced characterizations have been performed to shed light on the main factors governing the crystallization mechanism and to identify the nature of the defects. The ultra-small nanoMOFs showed exceptional performance in peptide hydrolysis reaction, including high reactivity, selectivity, diffusion, stability, and show emerging tailorable reactivity and selectivity towards peptide bond formation simply by changing the reaction solvent. Therefore, these highly defective ultra-small M(IV)-MOFs particles open new perspectives for the development of heterogeneous MOF catalysts with dual functions.

Crosslinking-induced patterning of MOFs by direct photo- and electron-beam lithography

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with diverse chemistry, structures, and properties have emerged as appealing materials for miniaturized solid-state devices. The incorporation of MOF films in these devices, such as the integrated microelectronics and nanophotonics, requires robust patterning methods. However, existing MOF patterning methods suffer from some combinations of limited material adaptability, compromised patterning resolution and scalability, and degraded properties. Here we report a universal, crosslinking-induced patterning approach for various MOFs, termed as CLIP-MOF. Via resist-free, direct photo- and electron-beam (e-beam) lithography, the ligand crosslinking chemistry leads to drastically reduced solubility of colloidal MOFs, permitting selective removal of unexposed MOF films with developer solvents. This enables scalable, micro-/nanoscale (≈70 nm resolution), and multimaterial patterning of MOFs on large-area, rigid or flexible substrates. Patterned MOF films preserve their crystallinity, porosity, and other properties tailored for targeted applications, such as diffractive gas sensors and electrochromic pixels. The combined features of CLIP-MOF create more possibilities in the system-level integration of MOFs in various electronic, photonic, and biomedical devices.

Construction of Indium(III)-Organic Framework Based on a Flexible Cyclotriphosphazene-Derived Hexacarboxylate as a Reusable Green Catalyst for the Synthesis of Bioactive Aza-Heterocycles

The constant demand for eco-friendly methods of synthesizing complex organic compounds inspired researchers to design and develop modern, highly efficient heterogeneous catalytic systems. Herein, In-HCPCP metal-organic framework (SRMIST-1), a heterogeneous Lewis acid catalyst containing less toxic indium and eco-friendly robust cyclotriphosphazene and exhibiting notable chemical and thermal stability, durable catalytic activity, and exceptional reusability was produced through the reaction between indium(III) nitrate hydrate and hexakis(4-carboxylatophenoxy)-cyclotriphosphazene. In the SRMIST-1 structure, secondary building units {InO7} are assembled by a connection of η2- and η1-carboxylic oxo atoms from different HCPCP ligands, forming a three-dimensional network. The occurrence of regularly distributed In(III) sites in SRMIST-1 confers superior reactivity on the catalyst toward the synthesis of 2,3-dihydroquinazolin-4(1H)-ones and 3,4-dihydro-2H-1,2,4-benzothiadiazine-1,1-dioxides by the cyclization reaction of 2-aminobenzamides and 2-aminobenzenesulphonamides with aldehydes under optimized reaction conditions, respectively. The notable features of this method include broad functional group compatibility, low catalyst loading (1-5 mol %), mild reaction conditions, easy workup procedures, good to excellent reaction yields, ethanol as a green solvent, reusability of the catalyst (five cycles), and economic attractiveness, which is mainly due to sustainability of SRMIST-1 as a reusable green catalyst. Our findings demonstrate that the highly reactive and reusable green catalyst finds widespread applications in medicinal chemistry.

Computational screening and functional tuning of chemically stable metal organic frameworks for I2/CH3I capture in humid environments

High chemical stability is of vital significance in rendering metal organic frameworks (MOFs) as promising adsorbents for capturing leaked radioactive nuclides, under real nuclear industrial conditions with high humidity. In this work, grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) and density functional theory (DFT) methods have been employed to systematically evaluate I2/CH3I capture performances of 21 experimentally confirmed chemically stable MOFs in humid environments. Favorable structural factors and the influence of hydrophilicity for iodine capture were unveiled. Subsequently, the top-performing MIL-53-Al with flexible tunability was functionalized with different functional groups to achieve the better adsorption performance. It has been revealed that the adsorption affinity and pore volume were two major factors altered by the functionalization of polar functional groups, which collectively influenced the iodine adsorption properties. In general, this work has screened the chemically stable high-performance MOF iodine adsorbents and provided comprehensive insights into the key factors affecting I2/CH3I uptake and separation in humid environments.

Towards an E-nose: Metal-organic frameworks based quartz crystal microbalance array for fruit ripeness indexing

Ethylene is a hormone for fruit ripening control, and for the purpose of maintaining plant quality, ethylene monitoring is crucial. Due to the simple structure and limited functionality, the technical realization of ethylene detection by an artificial sensor remains a challenge. In this paper, we present a metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) array based electronic nose (e-nose) for rapid and accurate determination of ethylene. Six zirconium-based MOFs with systematically modified pore sizes and π-π binding sites have been prepared and fabricated into a sensor array using quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) technology. By virtue of the synergistic features of six MOF sensors, selectivity detection of ethylene has been achieved. The detection limit reaches to 0.27 ± 0.02 ppm, and high selectivity and stability (98.29 % ± 0.88 %) could also be confirmed. By submitting data to machine learning algorithm, an e-nose system could be established for discriminating ethylene from mixtures with a qualitative accuracy of 90.30 % and quantitative accuracy of 98.89 %. Practical evaluation suggests that the e-nose could index the fruit quality based on the accurate detection of ethylene released during fruit ripeness. This work demonstrates the promising potential of fabricating MOFs based e-nose systems for practical monitoring applications by selectively detecting challengeable target molecules.

Disorder and Sorption Preferences in a Highly Stable Fluoride-Containing Rare-Earth fcu-Type Metal-Organic Framework

Rare-earth (RE) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) synthesized in the presence of fluorine-donating modulators or linkers are an important new subset of functional MOFs. However, the exact nature of the REaXb core of the molecular building block (MBB) of the MOF, where X is a μ2 or 3-bridging group, remains unclear. Investigation of one of the archetypal members of this family with the stable fcu framework topology, Y-fum-fcu-MOF (1), using a combination of experimental techniques, including high-field (20 T) solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, has determined two sources of framework disorder involving the μ3-X face-capping group of the MBB and the fumarate (fum) linker. The core of the MBB of 1 is shown to contain a mixture of μ3-F- and (OH)- groups with preferential occupation at the crystallographically different face-capping sites that result in different internally lined framework tetrahedral cages. The fum linker is also found to display a disordered arrangement involving bridging- or chelating-bridging bis-bidentate modes over the fum linker positions without influencing the MBB orientation. This linker disorder will, upon activation, result in the creation of Y3+ ions with potentially one or two additional uncoordinated sites possessing differing degrees of Lewis acidity. Crystallographically determined host-guest relationships for simple sorbates demonstrate the favored sorption sites for N2, CO2, and CS2 molecules that reflect the chemical nature of both the framework and the sorbate species with the structural partitioning of the μ3-groups apparent in determining the favored sorption site of CS2. The two types of disorder found within 1 demonstrate the complexity of fluoride-containing RE-MOFs and highlight the possibility to tune this and other frameworks to contain different proportions and segregations of μ3-face-capping groups and degrees of linker disorder for specifically tailored applications.

Recent trends in wastewater treatment by using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and their composites: A critical view-point

Respecting the basic need of clean and safe water on earth for every individual, it is necessary to take auspicious steps for waste-water treatment. Recently, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are considered as promising material because of their intrinsic features including the porosity and high surface area. Further, structural tunability of MOFs by following the principles of reticular chemistry, the MOFs can be functionalized for the high adsorption performance as well as adsorptive removal of target materials. However, there are still some major concerns associated with MOFs limiting their commercialization as promising adsorbents for waste-water treatment. The cost, toxicity and regenerability are the major issues to be addressed for MOFs to get insightful results. In this article, we have concise the current strategies to enhance the adsorption capacity of MOFs during the water-treatment for the removal of toxic dyes, pharmaceuticals, and heavy metals. Further, we have also discussed the role of metallic nodes, linkers and associated functional groups for effective removal of toxic water pollutants. In addition to conformist overview, we have critically analyzed the MOFs as adsorbents in terms of toxicity, cost and regenerability. These factors are utmost important to address before commercialization of MOFs as adsorbents for water-treatment. Finally, some future perspectives are discussed to give directions for potential research.

Preparation of PDMS and PDMS-UiO-66 oxygen-rich membranes and modules for membrane-aerated biofilm reactors

A membrane-aerated biofilm reactor (MABR) combines membrane technology with biofilm processes and has unique advantages in the treatment of organic wastewater and volatile wastewater. The common membranes for MABR systems usually have relatively uneven pore structures and low bubble point pressure, resulting in unsatisfactory O2 utilization and wastewater treatment efficiency. In this work, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and UiO-66 (a Zr-based metal organic framework) were coated on the surface of a commercial polypropylene (PP) hollow fiber membrane to prepare oxygen-rich MABR membranes and modules, which showed an attractive O2 utilization rate and wastewater treatment efficiency. The bubble points of the PDMS and PDMS-UiO-66 membranes were significantly higher than those of the PP membranes, and the PDMS-UiO-66 membranes had better oxygen enrichment capacity and biological affinity. The optimal PDMS-UiO-66 membrane modules had an O2 permeance of 31.65 GPU (1 GPU = 3.35 × 10-10 mol m-2 s-1 Pa-1), with O2/N2 selectivity of 2.21. The membrane hanging effect and processing capacity for domestic sewage were greatly improved. This study may provide insights and guidelines to fabricate porous mixed matrix membranes and modules in the industry for MABR. The developed products are expected to be applied in the actual separation process.

Bibliometric analysis of zirconia publications between 1980 and 2021: Global productivity and publication trends

Purpose With an increase in patients' aesthetic demands and advancements in dental technologies, tooth-colored materials have grown in popularity. This study aimed to statistically analyze the scientific output of zirconia.Methods Articles published between 1980 and 2021 were downloaded from the Web of Science database and analyzed using various statistical/bibliometric methods. Correlations were evaluated using the Spearman's coefficient. Time-series forecasting was used to predict the number of articles in the coming years.Results Of the 18773 recordings, 16703 (88.9%) were articles. China contributed the most to the literature (n=3345, 20%). The Chinese Academy of Sciences was the most active institution (n=666). Furthermore, Ceramics International was the journal that published the most articles (N=611). The Journal of Catalysis was the journal with the highest average number of citations per article (average number of citations, 81.4). A high level of significant correlation was found between the number of articles produced by different countries on zirconia and gross domestic product (r=0.742, P<0.001).Conclusions It is expected that zirconia research will continue to increase parallel with the increase in aesthetic expectations. Recent trends include dental implants, resin cement, surface roughness, shear bond strength, monolithic zirconia, osseointegration, flexural strength, aging, geochemistry, zircon U-Pb dating, detrital zircon, adhesion, computer-aided design-computer-aided manufacturing, bond strength, adsorption, titanium, spark plasma sintering, corrosion, SEM, zirconium dioxide, surface modification, XRD, finite-element analysis, and yttria-stabilized zirconia. Clinicians and scientists interested in zirconia can refer to this comprehensive article as a useful resource for the relevant global and multidisciplinary outcomes.

Heating-induced adsorption promoting the efficient removal of toluene by the metal-organic framework UiO-66 (Zr) under visible light

The removal of indoor/outdoor toluene by photocatalysis has drawn much attention due to its low energy consumption and easy availability. However, light inevitably generates heat, and pollutants desorb from catalysts as the temperature rises, which is not beneficial to degradation. Contrast to the frequently occurred phenomena, we firstly found that the adsorption capacity of UiO-66 (Zr) on toluene increased with increasing temperature as adsorption isotherms and in-situ Fourier transform infrared spectra (in-situ FTIR) showed. The optimum temperature was 30 °C. This stage in which adsorption capacity was positively correlated with temperature was called heating-induced adsorption, which achieved a toluene removal efficiency of 69.6 %. By density functional theory (DFT) calculations and changing the metal centers and organic ligands of UiO-66 (Zr) respectively, we disclosed that the heating-induced adsorption was mainly related to the π-π stacking interaction of MOF ligands and toluene. The analysis of samples before and after adsorption showed that the interaction between UiO-66 (Zr) and adsorbed toluene facilitated the charge transfer and prolonged the carrier lifetime, leading to the increase of hydroxyl radicals (•OH) in photocatalysis. Therefore, a synergistic effect between heating-induced adsorption and photocatalysis was proposed by analyzing the adsorption of toluene on UiO-66 (Zr) in detail. This work provided new viewpoint to understand the role of concomitant heat contributed to the adsorption and degradation of toluene during photocatalysis.

Metal-Organic Framework Membrane Constructor: A Tool for High-Throughput Construction of Metal-Organic Framework Membrane Models

With the rapid development of metal-organic framework (MOF) membranes for separation applications, computational screening of their separation performance has attracted increasing interest in the design and fabrication of such materials. Although bulk crystal models in MOF databases are often used to represent MOF membrane structures, membrane models in slab geometries are still essential for researchers to simulate the separation performance, particularly to understand the effects of the surface/interface structure, pore sieving, and exposed lattice plane on guest permeability. However, to date, no database or method has been established to provide researchers with numerous membrane models, restricting the further development of related theoretical studies. Herein, we propose an algorithm and develop a tool called the "MOF-membrane constructor" to realize the high-throughput construction of membrane models based on the MOF crystal structures. Using this tool, membrane models can be generated with desired sizes, reasonable surface terminations, and assigned exposed crystal planes. The tool can also deduce the most prominent surface in the Bravais-Friedel-Donnay-Harker morphology or identify the pores in MOF crystals and automatically determine an exposed plane for each membrane model. Thus, an MOF-membrane database can be established rapidly according to user simulation requirements. This study can considerably improve the efficiency of building MOF membrane models and may be beneficial for the future development of simulation studies on MOF membranes.

Greatly Intensified Guest Exchange Strategy for Highly-Efficient Activation of Metal-Organic Frameworks

The preservation and accessibility of pores are prerequisites to the application of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Activation is a key step to eliciting rich features of pores, but it needs a repeated solvent-exchange process which is tedious and time/cost-consuming. Herein, a facile strategy for highly-efficient activation of MOFs utilizing rotating packed bed is proposed. With the tremendous enhancement of molecular mixing and mass transfer in high-gravity and strong-shearing surrounding, nine representative MOFs are completely activated within 2 h without structural change. Compared with conventional process, this activation displays surprising efficiency by accelerating the diffusion of solvents and redissolution of residual reactants in the pores. The complete activation time can be significantly shortened by over 90%. As a proof-of-concept, the methane storage of as-activated UiO-66 is five times that of as-synthesized UiO-66. This strategy provides a potential platform with industrial worth for the activation of MOF materials with ultra-high efficiency and versatility.

Preparation of lysozyme-imprinted mesoporous Zr-based metal-organic frameworks with remarkable specific recognition

The development of high-performance protein-imprinted materials remains challenging due to defects concerning high mass transfer resistance and non-specific binding, which are crucial for protein purification and enrichment. In this paper, lysozyme-imprinted mesoporous Zr-based MOF (mesoUiO-66-NH2@MIPs) with specific and selective recognition of lysozyme (Lyz) were prepared by surface imprinting technology. In particular, the excellent hydrophilicity mesoporous MOFs (mesoUiO-66-NH2) with a pore size of 10 nm was prepared as a carrier for Lyz immobilization by an auxiliary modulation strategy to regulate the microporous structure of UiO-66-NH2 with the propionic acid solution, enabling massive loading of the macromolecular protein Lyz. The mesoUiO-66-NH2@MIPs reached a maximum saturation adsorption of 206.54 mg g-1 on Lyz in 20 min at 25 °C with an imprinting factor of 2.57 and selection factors of 2.02, 2.34, and 2.45 for cytochrome c (Cyt c), bovine serum albumin (BSA) and bovine hemoglobin (BHb), respectively. More importantly, the mesoUiO-66-NH2@MIPs could specifically recognize Lyz from the mixed protein system. The adsorption capacity of Lyz could still reach 78.55% after 5 cycles with good cyclic regeneration performance. This provides a new research option for developing and applying novel porous MOF in biomolecule imprinting technology and the specific separation of biomolecules.

Predicting Gas Adsorption without the Knowledge of Pore Structures: A Machine Learning Method Based on Classical Density Functional Theory

Predicting gas adsorption from the pore structure is an intuitive and widely used methodology in adsorption. However, in real-world systems, the structural information is usually very complicated and can only be approximately obtained from the characterization data. In this work, we developed a machine learning (ML) method to predict gas adsorption form the raw characterization data of N2 adsorption. The ML method is modeled by a convolutional neural network and trained by a large number of data that are generated from a classical density functional theory, and the model gives a very accurate prediction of Ar adsorption. Though the training set is limited to modeling slit pores, the model can be applied to three-dimensional structured pores and real-world materials. The good agreements suggest that there is a universal relationship among adsorption isotherms of different adsorbates, which could be captured by the ML model.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for energy production and gaseous fuel and electrochemical energy storage applications

The increasing energy demands in society and industrial sectors have inspired the search for alternative energy sources that are renewable and sustainable, also driving the development of clean energy storage and delivery systems. Various solid-state materials (e.g., oxides, sulphides, polymer and conductive nanomaterials, activated carbon and their composites) have been developed for energy production (water splitting-H2 production), gaseous fuel (H2 and CH4) storage and electrochemical energy storage (batteries and supercapacitors) applications. Nevertheless, the low surface area, pore volume and conductivity, and poor physical and chemical stability of the reported materials have resulted in higher requirements and challenges in the development of energy production and energy storage technologies. Thus, to overcome these issues, the development of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has attracted significant attention. MOFs are a class of porous materials with extremely high porosity and surface area, structural diversity, multifunctionality, and chemical and structural stability, and thus they can be used in a wide range of applications. In the present review, we precisely discuss the interesting properties of MOFs and the various methodologies for their synthesis, and also the future dependence on the valorization of solid waste for the recovery of metals and organic ligands for the synthesis of new classes of MOFs. Subsequently, the utilization of these interesting characteristics for energy production (water splitting), storage of gaseous fuels (H2 and CH4), and electrochemical storage (batteries and supercapacitors) applications are described. However, although MOFs are efficient materials with versatile uses, they still have many challenges, limiting their practical applications. Therefore, finally, we highlight the challenges associated with MOFs and show the way forward in overcoming them for the development of these highly porous materials with large-scale practical utility.

Formic Acid-Regulated Defect Engineering in Zr-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks toward Fluorescence Sensor for Sensitive Detection of Chlortetracycline

The elaborate defect-engineering of luminescent metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) allows them with enhanced sensing performance. A modulator-induced defect formation strategy is adopted in this paper, and the impact of the open-metal sites on sensing process is rationalized. It is demonstrated that the defect level can be tuned to a remarkable extent by controlling the amount of modulator. When a particular defect concentration is reached, the UiO-66-xFA can be acted as highly sensitive ratiometric fluorescence probes for chlortetracycline (CTE) determination with an ultralow detection limit of 9.9 nm. Furthermore, by virtue of the obvious variation in fluorescence chromaticity of probes from blue to yellow, a sensory hydrogels-based smartphone platform is proposed for visible quantitation of CTE by identifying the RGB values. A delicate device integrated with UV lamp and dark cavity has been developed for avoiding inconsistencies of ambient light and visual errors. Finally, the sensor obtains satisfactory results in the detection of actual seafood samples, with no significant differences from those of liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. This approach anticipates a novel route to sensitize optical sensors through the design and synthesis of moderate defects in luminescent MOFs.

Carbon dioxide adsorption to UiO-66: theoretical analysis of binding energy and NMR properties

UiO-66 is one of the most valuable metal-organic frameworks because of its excellent adsorption capability for gas molecules and its high stability towards water. Herein we investigated adsorption of carbon dioxide (CO2), acetone, and methanol to infinite UiO-66 using DFT calculations on an infinite system under periodic-boundary conditions and post-Hartree-Fock (SCS-MP2 and MP2.5) calculations on cluster models. Three to four molecules are adsorbed at each of four μ-OH groups bridging three Zr atoms in one unit cell (named Site I). Six molecules are adsorbed around three pillar ligands, where the molecule is loosely surrounded by three terephthalate ligands (named Site II). Also, six molecules are adsorbed around the pillar ligand in a different manner from that at Site II, where the molecule is surrounded by three terephthalate ligands (named Site III). Totally fifteen to sixteen CO2 molecules are adsorbed into one unit cell of UiO-66. The binding energy (BE) decreases in the order Site I > Site III > Site II for all three molecules studied here and in the order acetone > methanol ≫ CO2 in the three adsorption sites. At the site I, the protonic H atom of the μ-OH group interacts strongly with the negatively charged O atom of CO2, acetone and methanol, which is the origin of the largest BE value at this site. Although the DFT calculations present these decreasing orders of BE values correctly, the correction by post-Hartree-Fock calculations is not negligibly small and must be added for obtaining better BE values. We explored NMR spectra of UiO-66 with adsorbed CO2 molecules and found that the isotropic shielding constants of the 1H atom significantly differ among no CO2, one CO2 (at Sites I, II, or III), and fifteen CO2 adsorption cases (Sites I to III) but the isotropic 17O and 13C shielding constants change moderately by adsorption of fifteen CO2 molecules. Thus, 1H NMR measurement is a useful experiment for investigating CO2 adsorption.

Synthetic control of correlated disorder in UiO-66 frameworks

Changing the perception of defects as imperfections in crystalline frameworks into correlated domains amenable to chemical control and targeted design might offer opportunities for the design of porous materials with superior performance or distinctive behavior in catalysis, separation, storage, or guest recognition. From a chemical standpoint, the establishment of synthetic protocols adapted to control the generation and growth of correlated disorder is crucial to consider defect engineering a practicable route towards adjusting framework function. By using UiO-66 as experimental platform, we systematically explored the framework chemical space of the corresponding defective materials. Periodic disorder arising from controlled generation and growth of missing cluster vacancies can be chemically controlled by the relative concentration of linker and modulator, which has been used to isolate a crystallographically pure "disordered" reo phase. Cs-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy is used to proof the coexistence of correlated domains of missing linker and cluster vacancies, whose relative sizes are fixed by the linker concentration. The relative distribution of correlated disorder in the porosity and catalytic activity of the material reveals that, contrarily to the common belief, surpassing a certain defect concentration threshold can have a detrimental effect.

Implementing Mesoporosity in Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks through Clip-Off Chemistry in Heterometallic Iron-Zinc ZIF-8

Bond breaking has emerged as a new tool to postsynthetically modify the pore structure in metal-organic frameworks since it allows us to obtain pore environments in structures that are inaccessible by other techniques. Here, we extend the concept of clip-off chemistry to archetypical ZIF-8, taking advantage of the different stabilities of the bonds between imidazolate and Zn and Fe metal atoms in heterometallic Fe-Zn-ZIF-8. We demonstrate that Fe centers can be removed selectively without affecting the backbone of the structure that is supported by the Zn atoms. This allows us to create mesopores within the highly stable ZIF-8 structure. The strategy presented, combined with control of the amount of iron centers incorporated into the structure, permits porosity engineering of ZIF materials and opens a new avenue for designing novel hierarchical porous frameworks.

Enhancing catalytic activity and pore structure of metal-organic framework-808 via ligand competition for biodiesel production from microalgal lipids at reduced temperatures

Catalysts with hierarchical porous structures and increased active defects play a crucial role in catalyzing the conversion of microalgae lipids. However, the template methods used for pore expansion and the acidification process employed to enhance activity are cumbersome and prone to deactivation. It is necessary to propose a simple and versatile synthetic approach to overcome these challenges. By modulating N,N-dimethylformamide basicity with formic acid, MOF-808 exhibited enhanced coordination of benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylic acid to Zr-clusters, creating three types of functional defects. These defects increased pore size from 1.63 nm to 5.34 nm and enhanced catalyst acidity by 22.8%, while maintaining high porosity. The active catalytic sites were confirmed to be defect sites (exposed Zr4+) through density functional theory. Compared to regular MOF-808, catalyst MOF-808-3/1 shows enhanced hierarchical porosity and increased acidity, enabling efficient conversions at reduced reaction temperature (100 °C) and pressure (352 kPa) compared to 200 °C and 4036 kPa, respectively.

Improving the molecular spin qubit performance in zirconium MOF composites by mechanochemical dilution and fullerene encapsulation

Enlarging the quantum coherence times and gaining control over quantum effects in real systems are fundamental for developing quantum technologies. Molecular electron spin qubits are particularly promising candidates for realizing quantum information processing due to their modularity and tunability. Still, there is a constant search for tools to increase their quantum coherence times. Here we present how the mechanochemical introduction of active spin qubits in the form of 10% diluted copper(ii)-porphyrins in the diamagnetic PCN-223 and MOF-525 zirconium-MOF polymorph pair can be achieved. Furthermore, the encapsulation of fullerene during the MOF synthesis directs the process exclusively toward the rare PCN-223 framework with a controllable amount of fullerene in the framework channels. In addition to the templating role, the incorporation of fullerene increases the electron spin-lattice and phase-memory relaxation times, T1 and Tm. Besides decreasing the amount of nuclear spin-bearing solvent guests in the non-activated qubit frameworks, the observed improved relaxation times can be rationalized by modulating the phonon density of states upon fullerene encapsulation.

Hf-Based MOF for Rapid and Selective Sensing of a Nerve Agent Simulant and an Aminophenol: Insights from Experiments and Theory

The metal-organic framework (MOF) Hf-DUT-52 was prepared with diamino functionality by the solvothermal method. This material displayed fluorometric sensing ability toward a nerve agent simulant (diethyl chlorophosphate (DCP)) and 3-diethylaminophenol (3-DEAP). It is the first-ever reported fluorescent MOF sensor for DCP and 3-DEAP. Apart from a fast response (<5 s), the sensor had a very low detection limit for both DCP and DEAP (limit of detection (LOD) values for DCP and 3-DEAP sensing were 9 and 125 nM, respectively). The obtained detection limit is the second lowest among all of the reported optical sensors for DCP. The sensor also displayed its capability to identify the presence of trace amount of DCP in various natural water specimens with good selectivity. Moreover, MOF@cotton composites were developed for visual, on-site, nanomolar-level detection of both targeted analytes. Furthermore, a MOF@PVA thin film was fabricated and successfully utilized for the detection of highly volatile and deadly poisonous DCP in the vapor phase. The sensor was also recyclable for up to five cycles without losing appreciable efficiency. Density functional theory (DFT)-based periodic and cluster calculations were performed to shed light on the sensing ability of the MOF by studying the interactions of DCP and DEAP with the MOF. Our theoretical results reveal the importance of linker defects and water chemisorption on the adsorption/complexation of the analytes at uncoordinated Hf sites.

Coordination Defect-Induced Frustrated Lewis Pairs in Polyoxo-metalate-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks for Efficient Catalytic Hydrogenation

Precise control of the structure and spatial distance of Lewis acid (LA) and Lewis base (LB) sites in a porous system to construct efficient solid frustrated Lewis pair (FLP) catalyst is vital for industrial application but remains challenging. Herein, we constructed FLP sites in a polyoxometalate (POM)-based metal-organic framework (MOF) by introducing coordination-defect metal nodes (LA) and surface-basic POM with abundant oxygen (LB). The well-defined and unique spatial conformation of the defective POM-based MOF ensure that the distance between LA and LB is at ~4.3 Å, a suitable distance to activate H2 . This FLP catalyst can heterolytically dissociate H2 into active Hδ- , thus exhibiting high activity in hydrogenation, which is 55 and 2.7 times as high as that of defect-free POM-based MOF and defective MOF without POM, respectively. This work provides a new avenue toward precise design multi-site catalyst to achieve specific activation of target substrate for synergistic catalysis.

Controlled Partial Linker Thermolysis in Metal-Organic Framework UiO-66-NH2 to Give a Single-Site Copper Photocatalyst for the Functionalization of Terminal Alkynes

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with expanding porosity and tailored pore environments are intriguing for catalytic applications. We report herein a straightforward method of controlled partial linker thermolysis to introduce desirable mesopores into mono-ligand MOFs, which is different from the classical thermolyzing method that starts from mixed-linker MOFs. UiO-66-NH2 , after partial ligand thermolysis, exhibits significant mesoporosity, retained crystal structure, improved charge photogeneration and abundant anchoring sites, which is ideal to explore single-site photocatalysis. Atomically dispersed Cu is then accommodated in the tailored pore. The resulting single-site Cu catalyst exhibits excellent performance for photocatalytic alkylation and oxidation coupling for the functionalization of terminal alkynes. The study highlights the advantage of controlled partial linker thermolysis to synthesize hierarchical MOFs to achieve the advanced single-site photocatalysis.

Engineering linker defects in functionalized UiO-66 MOF nanoparticles for oil-in-water Pickering emulsion stabilization

Designing metal-organic framework (MOF)-based solid nanoparticles to stabilize Pickering emulsions by fine-tuning their hydrophobicity and lipophobicity is vital for essential applications and fundamental understanding. We demonstrate in situ grafting of palmitic acid in UiO-66 MOF through its linker defects. Our designed and activated nanoparticles (denoted as UP') stabilized the Pickering emulsions of n-heptane-in-water. Furthermore, we showed how UP' stabilized emulsion droplets disperse in media by covering each tiny droplet with a nanoscale layer made of UP'. To support our claim, we carried out the freeze-drying process to remove the liquid part from the emulsion, leaving behind the solid shell-like microstructures that we further characterized through several microscopic techniques. The stable n-heptane-in-water emulsion was confirmed by dilution (drop test), conductivity, zeta potential, and theoretical surface electrostatic potential measurements. Rheological studies indicate that the Pickering emulsions of n-heptane-in-water stabilized by UP' are much more resistant to deformation and flow imparting higher (mechanical) stability and shelf-life. Pickering emulsions stabilized by UP' emerged as a versatile way to design smart functional materials of UiO-66 through engineering linker defects that may have potential applications in interfacial catalysis, dye or contaminant separation, etc.

Confinement of Organic Dyes in UiO-66-Type Metal-Organic Frameworks for the Enhanced Synthesis of [1,2,5]Thiadiazole[3,4-g]benzoimidazoles

Organic dyes as non-noble metal photosensitizers have attracted increasing attention due to their environmental friendliness and sustainability but suffer from fast deactivation and low stability. Here, we reported a fruitful strategy by the confinement and stabilization of visible light-active signal unit organic dyes within the metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and developed a series of heterogeneous photocatalysts dye@UiO-66s [dye = fluorescein (FL)/rhodamine B (RhB)/eosin Y (EY), UiO-66s = UiO-66, and Bim-UiO-66]. It has been demonstrated that the encapsulated dyes can effectively sensitize MOF hosts and dominate the band structures and photocatalytic activities of dye@UiO-66s regardless of the ligand functionalization of MOFs. Photocatalytic experiments showed that these dye@UiO-66s exhibit enhanced activities relative to free dyes and among them, FL@Bim-UiO-66 displays excellent efficiencies toward the green synthesis of new carbon-bridged annulations, [1,2,5]thiadiazole[3,4-g]benzoimidazoles in the yield of up to 98% at room temperature with outstanding stability and reusability. Furthermore, the intramolecular cyclization intermediate was captured and characterized by the single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis.

Efficient Generation of Large Collections of Metal-Organic Framework Structures Containing Well-Defined Point Defects

High-throughput molecular simulations of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a useful complement to experiments to identify candidates for chemical separation and storage. All previous efforts of this kind have used simulations in which MOFs are approximated as defect-free. We introduce a tool to readily generate missing-linker defects in MOFs and demonstrate this tool with a collection of 507 defective MOFs. We introduce the concept of the maximum possible defect concentration; at higher defect concentrations, deviations from the defect-free crystal structure would be readily evident experimentally. We studied the impact of defects on molecular adsorption as a function of defect concentrations. Defects have a slightly negative or negligible influence on adsorption at low pressures for ethene, ethane, and CO₂ but a strong positive influence for methanol due to hydrogen bonding with defects. Defective structures tend to have loadings slightly higher than those of defect-free structures for all adsorbates at elevated pressures.

In-situ preparation of sulfonated carbonaceous copper oxide-zirconia nanocomposite as a novel and recyclable solid acid catalyst for reduction of 4-nitrophenol

The missing-linker defects of UiO-66 were exploited to covalently anchor Cu nanoclusters (Cu/UiO-66). The molecular interactions between the metals and oxides as copper-zirconia interfaces in Cu/UiO-66 are essential for heterogeneous catalysis, leading to remarkable synergistic impacts on activity and selectivity. Homogeneously distributed carbonaceous mixed metal oxides (CuO/ZrO₂@C) nanocomposite was prepared via carbonization of the Cu/UiO-66 at 600 °C for 3 h in air. To enhance the acidity properties of the CuO/ZrO₂@C nanocomposite, a small amount of sulfuric acid was added and heated at 150 °C under an N₂ atmosphere (CuO/ZrO₂-SO₃H@C). The synthesised Cu/UiO-66 and CuO/ZrO₂-SO₃H@C catalysts were used as novel catalysts in the reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) to 4-aminophenol (4-AP). The Cu/UiO-66 and CuO/ZrO₂-SO₃H@C catalysts displayed complete conversion of the 4-NP solution during (4 and 2 min) stirring at room temperature, respectively. These two catalysts exhibited a high reduction rate of 8.61 × 10^-3 s^-1, and 18.3 × 10^-3 s^-1, respectively. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS) analysis showed the charge of copper atoms in the Cu/UiO-66 catalyst was Cu⁰/Cu^II and in the CuO/ZrO₂-SO₃H@C catalyst was Cu^I/Cu^II with nearly the same ratio (65/35). The particle size and the elemental composition of the CuO/ZrO₂-SO₃H@C catalyst were analysed by using high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and elemental mapping, respectively. The key point beyond the high catalytic activity and selectivity of the CuO/ZrO₂-SO₃H@C catalyst is both the carbon-metal oxides heterojunction structure that leads to good dispersion of the CuO and ZrO₂ over the carbon sheets, and the high acidity properties that come from the combination between the Brønsted acid sites from sulfuric acid and Lewis acid sites from the UiO-66. The catalysts exhibited good recyclability efficiency without significant loss in activity, indicating their good potential for industrial applications.

In Situ FTIR Spectroscopy for Scanning Accessible Active Sites in Defect-Engineered UiO-66

Three UiO-66 samples were prepared by solvothermal synthesis using the defect engineering approach with benzoic acid as a modulator. They were characterized by different techniques and their acidic properties were assessed by FTIR spectroscopy of adsorbed CO and CD₃CN. All samples evacuated at room temperature contained bridging μ₃-OH groups that interacted with both probe molecules. Evacuation at 250 °C leads to the dehydroxylation and disappearance of the μ₃-OH groups. Modulator-free synthesis resulted in a material with open Zr sites. They were detected by low-temperature CO adsorption on a sample evacuated at 200 °C and by CD₃CN even on a sample evacuated at RT. However, these sites were lacking in the two samples obtained with a modulator. IR and Raman spectra revealed that in these cases, the Zr⁴⁺ defect sites were saturated by benzoates, which prevented their interaction with probe molecules. Finally, the dehydroxylation of all samples produced another kind of bare Zr sites that did not interact with CO but formed complexes with acetonitrile, probably due to structural rearrangement. The results showed that FTIR spectroscopy is a powerful tool for investigating the presence and availability of acid sites in UiO-66, which is crucial for its application in adsorption and catalysis.

Fabrication of molecularly-imprinted gold nanoparticle-embedded Fe-MOFs for highly selective SERS detection of 17β-estradiol in milk

17β-Estradiol (17β-E2) could accumulate in humans through milk, thus causing diseases by interfering with the function of the endocrine system. However, its detection at a trace level in milk is still a challenge because of matrix interferences. In this work, a core-shell structured polydopamine molecular-imprinted gold nanoparticles (AuNP@MIP-PDA) were embedded into Fe metal-organic framework materials to form a well-defined hexagonal microspindle structure of AuNP@MIP-PDA@MIL-101(Fe). AuNP@MIP-PDA were successfully encapsulated within the MIL-101 crystals through the hydrophobic interaction between organic ligands and the aromatic groups of PDA, the chelating power of catechol groups, as well as the introduction of acetic acid. Combined with the SERS activity of AuNPs, the specific recognition sites from MIPs, and the adsorption and enrichment capability of MIL-101, the fabricated nanohybrids could be designed as highly selective SERS sensors for the detection. By effectively preventing the macromolecule adsorption and the preconcentration of 17β-E2 near the SERS-active surface, the SERS sensor could be directly applied in the selective detection of 17β-E2 in milk without tedious pretreatment. The method demonstrated an outstanding detection limit of 1.95 × 10^-16 mol L^-1, without the interference mainly originating from the two analogues, estrone and estriol. These promising results foresee the potential application of this novel MIP-based SERS sensor in food and environmental sensing.

Boosting Catalytic Performance of MOF-808(Zr) by Direct Generation of Rich Defective Zr Nodes via a Solvent-Free Approach

Creation of rich open metal sites (defect) on the nodes of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is an efficient approach to enhance their catalytic performance in heterogeneous reactions; however, direct generation of such defects remains challenging. In this contribution, we developed an in situ green route for rapid fabrication of defective MOF-808(Zr) with rich Zr-OH/OH₂ sites (occupying 25% Zr coordination sites) and hierarchical porosity without the assistance of formic acid and solvent. The optimal MOF-808(Zr) not only displayed superior activity in oxidative desulfurization (ODS) for removing 1000 ppm sulfur at ambient temperature within 20 min but also could convert 3.8 mmol of benzaldehyde to (dimethoxymethyl)benzene within 90 s at 30 °C. The turnover frequencies reached 45.4 h^-1 for ODS and 3451 h^-1 for acetalization, outperforming the most reported MOF-based catalysts. Theoretical calculation and experimental results show that the formed Zr-OH/OH₂ can react with H₂O₂ to generate peroxo-zirconium species, which readily oxidize the sulfur compound. Our work provides a new approach to the synthesis of defect-rich MOF-808(Zr) with the accessibility of active sites for target reactions.
