Conjugation- and Aggregation-Directed Design of Covalent Organic Frameworks as White-Light-Emitting Diodes

Restricted Growth of Vinylene-Linked Covalent Organic Frameworks along Two-Dimensional Plane Using Heterogeneous Catalysis

The vinylene-linked covalent organic frameworks (viCOFs) have been generally synthesized in the presence of homogeneous catalysts such as KOH or trifluoroacetic acid. However, highly ordered viCOFs cannot always be obtained due to the uncommitted growth of viCOF layers in the homogeneous system with ubiquitous catalysts. Here, we propose a scalable protocol to restrict the growth of viCOFs along the two-dimensional (2D) plane by introducing a heterogeneous catalyst, polyoxometalates (POMs). With the unique Brønsted alkalinity and catalytic surface, POMs induce the growth of 2D viCOF layers along the surface of the catalytic substrate and restrain the generation of out-of-plane branches. Based on this protocol, six typical 2D viCOFs with high crystallinity and porosity were synthesized within a shorter reaction time as compared with the reported works using the common homogeneous catalysts for viCOF synthesis. On the basis of the density functional theory calculations and experimental results, a bottom intercalation growth pattern of viCOFs was revealed during the heterogeneous reaction. The unique growth pattern greatly promotes the orderly assembly of monomers, thus shortening the reaction time and improving the crystallinity of viCOFs. Furthermore, this heterogeneous catalysis strategy is suitable for the gram-scale preparation of 2D viCOFs. These results provide a novel avenue for the synthesis of high-quality viCOFs and may bring new insights into the synthetic methodology of COFs.

Porous Azatruxene Covalent Organic Frameworks for Anion Insertion in Battery Cells

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) containing well-defined redox-active groups have become competitive materials for next-generation batteries. Although high potentials and rate performance can be expected, only a few examples of p-type COFs have been reported for charge storage to date with even fewer examples on the use of COFs in multivalent ion batteries. Herein, we report the synthesis of a p-type highly porous and crystalline azatruxene-based COF and its application as a positive electrode material in Li- and Mg-based batteries. When this material is used in Li-based half cells as a COF/carbon nanotube (CNT) electrode, a discharge potential of 3.9 V is obtained with discharge capacities of up to 70 mAh g-1 at a 2 C rate. In Mg batteries using a tetrakis(hexafluoroisopropyloxy)borate electrolyte, cycling proceeds with an average discharge voltage of 2.9 V. Even at a fast current rate of 5 C, the capacity retention amounts to 84% over 1000 cycles.

Reticular Ratchets for Directing Electrochemiluminescence

Electrochemiluminescence (ECL) involves charge transfer between electrochemical redox intermediates to produce an excited state for light emission. Ensuring precise control of charge transfer is essential for decoding ECL fundamentals, yet guidelines on how to achieve this for conventional emitters remain unexplored. Molecular ratchets offer a potential solution, as they enable the directional transfer of energy or chemicals while impeding the reverse movement. Herein, we designed 10 pairs of imine-based covalent organic frameworks as reticular ratchets to delicately manipulate the intrareticular charge transfer for directing ECL transduction from electric and chemical energies. Aligning the donor and acceptor (D-A) directions with the imine dipole effectively facilitates charge migration, whereas reversing the D-A direction impedes it. Notably, the ratchet effect of charge transfer directionality intensified with increasing D-A contrast, resulting in a remarkable 680-fold improvement in the ECL efficiency. Furthermore, dipole-controlled exciton binding energy, electron/hole decay kinetics, and femtosecond transient absorption spectra identified the electron transfer tendency from the N-end toward the C-end of reticular ratchets during ECL transduction. An exponential correlation between the ECL efficiency and the dipole difference was discovered. Our work provides a general approach to manipulate charge transfer and design next-generation electrochemical devices.

Decoding Excimer Formation in Covalent-Organic Frameworks Induced by Morphology and Ring Torsion

A thorough and quantitative understanding of the fate of excitons in covalent-organic frameworks (COFs) after photoexcitation is essential for their augmented optoelectronic and photocatalytic applications via precise structure tuning. The synthesis of a library of COFs having identical chemical backbone with impeded conjugation, but varied morphology and surface topography to study the effect of these physical properties on the photophysics of the materials is herein reported. The variation of crystallite size and surface topography substantified different aggregation pattern in the COFs, which leads to disparities in their photoexcitation and relaxation properties. Depending on aggregation, an inverse correlation between bulk luminescence decay time and exciton binding energy of the materials is perceived. Further transient absorption spectroscopic analysis confirms the presence of highly localized, immobile, Frenkel excitons (of diameter 0.3-0.5 nm) via an absence of annihilation at high density, most likely induced by structural torsion of the COF skeletons, which in turn preferentially relaxes via long-lived (nanosecond to microsecond) excimer formation (in femtosecond scale) over direct emission. These insights underpin the importance of structural and topological design of COFs for their targeted use in photocatalysis.

Construction of Layer-Blocked Covalent Organic Framework Heterogenous Films via Surface-Initiated Polycondensations with Strongly Enhanced Photocatalytic Properties

Imine-linked covalent organic frameworks (COFs) usually show high crystallinity and porosity, while vinyl-linked COFs have excellent semiconducting properties and stability. Therefore, achieving the advantages of imine- and vinyl-linkages in a single COF material is highly interesting but remains challenging. Herein, we demonstrate the fabrication of a layer-blocked COF (LB-COF) heterogeneous film that is composed of imine- and vinyl-linkages through two successive surface-initiated polycondensations. In brief, the bottom layer of imine-linked COF film was constructed on an amino-functionalized substrate via Schiff-base polycondensation, in which the unreacted aldehyde edges could be utilized for initiating aldol polycondensation to prepare the second layer of vinyl-linked COF film. The resultant LB-COF film displays excellent ordering due to the crystalline templating effect from the bottom imine-linked COF layer; meanwhile, the upper vinyl-linked COF layer could strongly enhance its stability and photocatalytic properties. The LB COF also presents superior performance in photocatalytic uranium extraction (320 mg g-1), which is higher than the imine-linked (35 mg g-1) and the vinyl-linked (295 mg g-1) counterpart. This study provides a novel surface-initiated strategy to synthesize layer-blocked COF heterogeneous films that combine the advantages of each building block.

σ-Hole Effect-Induced Electroluminescence of Halogen Cocrystals for Determination of Iodide in Seawater

Developing new electrochemiluminescence (ECL) luminators with high stability, wide applicability, and strong designability is of great strategic significance to promote the ECL field to the frontier. Here, driven by the I···N bond, 1,3,5-trifluoro-2,4,6-triiodobenzene (TFTI) and 2,4,6-trimethyl-1,3,5-triazine (TMT) self-assembled into a novel halogen cocrystal (TFTI-TMT) through slow solution volatilization. Significant difference of charge density existed between the N atoms on TMT and the σ-hole of the I atoms on TFTI. Upon the induction of σ-hole effect, high-speed and spontaneous charge transferring from TMT to the σ-hole of TFTI occurred, stimulating exciting ECL signals. Besides, the σ-hole of the I atoms could capture iodine ions specifically, which blocked the original charge transfer from the N atoms to the σ-hole, causing the ECL signal of TFTI-TMT to undergo a quenching rate as high as 92.9%. Excitingly, the ECL sensing of TFTI-TMT toward I- possessed a wide linear range (10-5000 nM) and ultralow detection limit (3 nM) in a real water sample. The halogen cocrystal strategy makes σ-hole a remarkable new viewpoint of ECL luminator design and enables ECL analysis technology to contribute to addressing the environmental and health threats posed by iodide pollution.

Inorganic-Organic Nanoarchitectonics: MXene/Covalent Organic Framework Heterostructure for Superior Microextraction

One of the difficulties limiting covalent organic frameworks (COFs) from becoming excellent adsorbents is their stacking/aggregation architectures owing to poor morphology/structure control during the synthesis process. Herein, an inorganic-organic nanoarchitectonics strategy to synthesize the MXene/COF heterostructure (Ti3 C2 Tx /TAPT-TFP) is developed by the assembly of β-ketoenamine-linked COF on the Ti3 C2 Tx MXene nanosheets. The as-prepared Ti3 C2 Tx /TAPT-TFP retains the 2D architecture and high adsorption capacity of MXenes as well as large specific surface area and hierarchical porous structure of COFs. As a proof of concept, the potential of Ti3 C2 Tx /TAPT-TFP for solid-phase microextraction (SPME) of trace organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) is investigated. The Ti3 C2 Tx /TAPT-TFP based SPME method achieves low limits of detection (0.036-0.126 ng g-1 ), wide linearity ranges (0.12-20.0 ng g-1 ), and acceptable repeatabilities for preconcentrating trace OCPs from fruit and vegetable samples. This study offers insights into the potential of constructing COF or MXene-based heterostructures for the microextraction of environmental pollutants.

Substitution and Orientation Effects on the Crystallinity and PFAS Adsorption of Olefin-Linked 2D COFs

Solid phase adsorbents with high removal affinity for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in aqueous environments are sought. We report the synthesis and investigation of COF-I, a new covalent organic framework (COF) with a good affinity for PFAS adsorption. COF-I was synthesized by the condensation reaction between 2,4,6-trimethyl-1,3,5-triazine and 2,3-dimethoxyterephthaldehyde and fully characterized. In addition to the high crystallinity and surface area, COF-I showed high hydrolytic and thermal stability. Further, we converted its hydrophobic surface to a hydrophilic surface by converting the ortho-methoxy groups to hydroxyl derivatives and produced a new hydrophilic olefin-linked two-dimensional (2D) COF. We experimentally measured the crystallinity of both COFs by X-ray diffraction and used atomistic simulations coupled with cross-polarization/magic angle spinning solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (CP/MAS ssNMR) to determine the relative amounts of AA-stacking and AB-stacking present. COF-I, with its hydrophobic surface and methoxy groups in the ortho positions, showed the best PFAS adsorption. COF-I reduced the concentration of perfluorooctanoic acid from 20 to 0.069 μg L-1 and to 0.052 μg L-1 for perfluorooctanesulfonic acid. These amounts are lower than the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency advisory level (0.070 μg L-1). High efficiency, fast kinetic adsorption, and reusability of COF-I are advantages of COF-I for PFAS removal from water.

Rapid Charge Transfer Enabled by Noncovalent Interaction through Guest Insertion in Supercapacitors based on Covalent Organic Frameworks

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have been proposed for electrochemical energy storage, although the poor conductivity resulted from covalent bonds limits their practical performance. Here, we propose to introduce noncovalent bonds in COFs through a molecular insertion strategy for improving the conductivity of the COFs as supercapacitor. The synthesized COFs (MI-COFs) establish equilibriums between covalent bonds and noncovalent bonds, which construct a continuous charge transfer channel to enhance the conductivity. The rapid charge transfer rate enables the COFs to activate the redox sites, bringing about excellent electrochemical energy storage behavior. The results show that the MI-COFs exhibit much better performance in specific capacitance and capacity retention rate than those of most COFs-based supercapacitors. Moreover, through simply altering inserted guests, the mode and strength of noncovalent bond can be adjusted to obtain different energy storage characteristics. The introduction of noncovalent bonds is an effective and flexible way to enhance and regulate the properties of COFs, providing a valuable direction for the development of novel COFs-based energy storage materials.

Design, Synthesis, and Ultrafast Carrier Dynamics of Core-Substituted Naphthalene Diimide-Based Covalent Organic Frameworks

A series of two-dimensional polyimide covalent organic frameworks (2D COF) based on core-substituted naphthalene diimides (cNDIs) were designed and synthesized with the characteristic of tunable bandgap without global structural changes. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and DFT calculations indicated that COFcNDI-OEt and COFcNDI-SEt possess higher HOMO/LUMO levels and narrower bandgaps than COFNDI-H. Further investigation indicated that the COF bandgaps are not only related to the electron-donating substituents but also varied with respect to the interlayer distances. Moreover, the femtosecond transient absorption (TA) spectra manifested that the electron donor substituents are beneficial to the charge delocalization in the π-columnar unit, resulting in a longer lifetime of charge recombination, which is one of the pivotal prerequisites for high-performance solar cells and photocatalysis.

Linkages Make a Difference in the Photoluminescence of Covalent Organic Frameworks

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with structural designability and tunability of photophysical properties enable them to be a promising class of organic luminescent materials by incorporating well-designed fluorescent units directly into the periodic skeletons. The photophysical properties of COFs are mainly affected by the structural features, which determine the conjugation degree, charge delocalization ability, and exciton dynamics of COFs. To understand the relationship between COF structures and their photophysical properties, two COFs with the same pyrene chromophore units but different linkages (imine or vinylene) were designed and synthesized. Interestingly, different linkages endow COFs with huge differences in solid-state photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) for imine- and vinylene-linked pyrene-based COFs, which possess PLQY values of 0.34 % and 15.43 %, respectively. The femtosecond-transient absorption spectra and time-dependent density functional theory reveal the different charge-transfer pathways in imine- and vinylene-linked COFs, which influence the exciton relaxation way and fluorescence intensity. In addition, an effective white-light device was obtained by coating the vinylene-linked COF on a light-emitting diode strip.

A fully π-conjugated covalent organic framework with dual binding sites for ultrasensitive detection and removal of divalent heavy metal ions

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have become a promising candidate for the remediation of heavy metal pollution. However, researches on COF adsorbents still have challenges on maintaining good optical properties and adsorption performance under harsh conditions. Herein, a fully π-conjugated COF with dual binding sites (Bpy-sp2c-COF) is reported for rapid fluorescence recognition and enhanced adsorption towards divalent heavy metal ions. The vinylene-linkage lattice shows strong luminescence and excellent stability in both strong acidity and basicity. Bpy-sp2c-COF demonstrates not only nanomolar-scale detection of divalent heavy metal ions, but also good adsorption capacity (Hg2+ 718.48, Ni2+ 278.64, Cu2+ 260.11, and Co2+ 126.23 mg/g). Experimental and theoretical studies reveal the intramolecular charge transfer as the fluorescence quenching mechanism. Further simulation results demonstrate the cyano and bipyridine groups on the lattice can act as dual binding sites for divalent heavy metal ions. Experimental results confirmed the adsorption capacity of Bpy-sp2c-COF superior to that of COFs with either cyano groups (Hg2+ 415.34, Ni2+ 165.60, Cu2+ 160.55, and Co2+ 73.14 mg/g), or bipyridine groups (Hg2+ 369.25, Ni2+ 133.41, Cu2+ 133.32, and Co2+ 69.23 mg/g). Besides, robust regeneration of the adsorbent could be achieved over 10 cycles. The fully π-conjugated COF with dual binding sites provides a new approach for designing next-generation sensors and adsorbents with excellent performances.

Vinylene-Linked Emissive Covalent Organic Frameworks for White-Light-Emitting Diodes

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have gained considerable attention due to their highly conjugated π-skeletons, rendering them promising candidates for the design of light-emitting materials. In this study, we present two vinylene-linked COFs, namely, VL-COF-1 and VL-COF-2, which were synthesized through the Knoevenagel condensation of 2,4,6-trimethyl-1,3,5-triazine with terephthalaldehyde or 4,4'-biphenyldicarboxaldehyde. Both VL-COF-1 and VL-COF-2 exhibited excellent chemical and thermal stability. The presence of vinylene linkages between the constituent building blocks in these COFs resulted in broad excitation and emission properties. Remarkably, the designed VL-COFs demonstrated bright emission, fast fluorescence decay, and high stability, making them highly attractive for optoelectronic applications. To assess the potential of these VL-COFs in practical devices, we fabricated white-light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) coated with VL-COF-1 and VL-COF-2. Notably, the WLEDs coated with VL-COF-1 achieved high-quality white light emission, closely approximating standard white light. The promising performance of VL-COF-coated WLEDs suggests the feasibility of utilizing COF materials for stable and efficient lighting applications.

A Fully Conjugated Covalent Organic Framework with Oxidative and Reductive Sites for Photocatalytic Carbon Dioxide Reduction with Water

Constructing a powerful photocatalytic system that can achieve the carbon dioxide (CO2 ) reduction half-reaction and the water (H2 O) oxidation half-reaction simultaneously is a very challenging but meaningful task. Herein, a porous material with a crystalline topological network, named viCOF-bpy-Re, was rationally synthesized by incorporating rhenium complexes as reductive sites and triazine ring structures as oxidative sites via robust -C=C- bond linkages. The charge-separation ability of viCOF-bpy-Re is promoted by low polarized π-bridges between rhenium complexes and triazine ring units, and the efficient charge-separation enables the photogenerated electron-hole pairs, followed by an intramolecular charge-transfer process, to form photogenerated electrons involved in CO2 reduction and photogenerated holes that participate in H2 O oxidation simultaneously. The viCOF-bpy-Re shows the highest catalytic photocatalytic carbon monoxide (CO) production rate (190.6 μmol g-1  h-1 with about 100 % selectivity) and oxygen (O2 ) evolution (90.2 μmol g-1 h-1 ) among all the porous catalysts in CO2 reduction with H2 O as sacrificial agents. Therefore, a powerful photocatalytic system was successfully achieved, and this catalytic system exhibited excellent stability in the catalysis process for 50 hours. The structure-function relationship was confirmed by femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations.

Synthesis of sp2 Carbon-Conjugated Covalent Organic Framework Thin-Films via Copper-Surface-Mediated Knoevenagel Polycondensation

sp2 carbon-conjugated covalent organic framework (sp2 c-COF) featured with high π-conjugation, high chemical stabilities, and designable chemical structures, are thus promising for applications including adsorption and separation, optoelectronic devices, and catalysis. For the most of these applications, large-area and continuous films are required. However, due to the needs of harsh conditions in the formation of CC bonds, classical interfacial methodologies are challenged in the synthesis of sp2 c-COFs films. Herein, a novel and robust interfacial method namely copper-surface-mediated Knoevenagel polycondensation (Cu-SMKP), is shown for scalable synthesis of sp2 c-COF films on various Cu substrates. Using this approach, large-area and continuous sp2 c-COF films could be prepared on various complicated Cu surfaces with thickness from tens to hundreds of nanometers. The resultant sp2 c-COF films on Cu substrate could be used directly as functional electrode for extraction of uranium from spiked seawater, which gives an exceptionally uptake capacity of 2475 mg g-1 . These results delineate significant synthetic advances in sp2 c-COF films and implemented them as functional electrodes for uranyl capture.

Linker Independent Regioselective Protonation Triggered Detoxification of Sulfur Mustards with Smart Porous Organic Photopolymer

The development of efficient metal-free photocatalysts for the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) for sulfur mustard (HD) decontamination can play a vital role against the stockpiling of chemical warfare agents (CWAs). Herein, one novel concept is conceived by smartly choosing a specific ionic monomer and a donor tritopic aldehyde, which can trigger linker-independent regioselective protonation/deprotonation in the polymeric backbone. In this context, the newly developed vinylene-linked ionic polymers (TPA/TPD-Ionic) are further explored for visible-light-assisted detoxification of HD simulants. Time-resolved-photoluminescence (TRPL) study reveals the protonation effect in the polymeric backbone by significantly enhancing the life span of photoexcited electrons. In terms of catalytic performance, TPA-Ionic outperformed TPD-Ionic because of its enhanced excitons formation and charge carrier abilities caused by the donor-acceptor (D-A) backbone and protonation effects. Moreover, the formation of singlet oxygen (1 O2 ) species is confirmed via in-situ Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) analysis, which explained the crucial role of solvents in the reaction medium to regulate the (1 O2 ) formation. This study creates a new avenue for developing novel porous photocatalysts and highlights the crucial roles of sacrificial electron donors and solvents in the reaction medium to establish the structure-activity relationship.

Emissive Substoichiometric Covalent Organic Frameworks for Water Sensing and Harvesting

Emissive covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have recently emerged as next-generation porous materials with attractive properties such as tunable topology, porosity, and inherent photoluminescence. Among the different types of COFs, substoichiometric frameworks (so-called Type III COFs) are especially attractive due to the possibility of not only generating unusual topology and complex pore architectures but also facilitating the introduction of well-defined functional groups at precise locations for desired functions. Herein, the first example of a highly emissive (PLQY 6.8%) substoichiometric 2D-COF (COF-SMU-1) featuring free uncondensed aldehyde groups is reported. In particular, COF-SMU-1 features a dual-pore architecture with an overall bex net topology, tunable emission in various organic solvents, and distinct colorimetric changes in the presence of water. To gain further insights into its photoluminescence properties, the charge transfer, excimer emission, and excited state exciton dynamics of COF-SMU-1 are investigated using femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy in different organic solvents. Additionally, highly enhanced atmospheric water-harvesting properties of COF-SMU-1 are revealed using FT-IR and water sorption studies.The findings will not only lead to in-depth understanding of structure-property relationships in emissive COFs but also open new opportunities for designing COFs for potential applications in solid-state lighting and water harvesting.

Guest Molecular Assembly Strategy in Covalent Organic Frameworks for Electrochemiluminescence Sensing of Uranyl

The application of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) in electrochemiluminescence (ECL) is promising in environmental monitoring. Developing an emerging design strategy to expand the class of COF-based ECL luminophores is highly desirable. Here, a COF-based host-guest system was constructed through guest molecular assembly to deal with nuclear contamination analysis. The efficient charge transport network was formed by inserting an electron-withdrawing guest tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) into the open space of the COF host (TP-TBDA; TP = 2,4,6-trihydroxy-1,3,5-benzenetricarbaldehyde and TBDA = 2,5-di(thiophen-2-yl)benzene-1,4-diamine) with an electron-donating property; the construction of the COF-based host-guest system (TP-TBDA@TCNQ) triggered the ECL emission of non-emitting TP-TBDA. Furthermore, the dense active sites in TP-TBDA were utilized to capture the target substance UO₂²⁺. The presence of UO₂²⁺ broke the charge-transfer effect in TP-TBDA@TCNQ, resulting in the weakening of the ECL signal, thus the established ECL system integrating the low detection limit with high selectivity monitors UO₂²⁺. This COF-based host-guest system provides a novel material platform for constructing late-model ECL luminophores and creates an opportunity for the vigorous ECL technology.

2D Covalent Organic Frameworks Based on Heteroacene Units

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are a unique new class of porous materials that arrange building units into periodic ordered frameworks through strong covalent bonds. Accompanied with structural rigidity and well-defined geometry, heteroacene-based COFs have natural advantages in constructing COFs with high stability and crystallinity. Heteroacene-based COFs usually have high physical and chemical properties, and their extended π-conjugation also leads to relatively low energy gap, effectively promoting π-electron delocalization between network units. Owing to excellent electron-withdrawing or -donating ability, heteroacene units have incomparable advantages in the preparation of donor-acceptor type COFs. Therefore, the physicochemical robust and fully conjugated heteroacene-based COFs solve the problem of traditional COFs lacking π-π interaction and chemical stability. In recent years, significant breakthroughs are made in this field, the choice of various linking modes and building blocks has fundamentally ensured the final applications of COFs. It is of great significance to summarize the heteroacene-based COFs for improving its complexity and controllability. This review first introduces the linkages in heteroacene-based COFs, including reversible and irreversible linkages. Subsequently, some representative building blocks are summarized, and their related applications are especially emphasized. Finally, conclusion and perspectives for future research on heteroacene-based COFs are presented.

Endowing Covalent Organic Frameworks with Photoresponsive Active Sites for Controllable Propylene Adsorption

Photoresponsive covalent organic frameworks (PCOFs) have emerged as attractive candidates for adsorption, but it is challenging to construct PCOF adsorbents due to structural order loss of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) after introducing photoresponsive motifs and/or tedious steps of postmodification. Here, a facile strategy is developed, by dispersing photoresponsive metal-organic polyhedra (PMOP) into COFs, to endow COFs with photoresponsive adsorption sites. As a proof-of-concept study, a COF with pore size of 4.5 nm and PMOP with suitable molecular size (4.0 and 3.1 nm for trans and cis configuration, respectively) are selected to meet the requirements of proper accommodation space, good guest dispersion, and free isomerization. The structure of COF is well preserved after introducing PMOPs. Interestingly, the obtained photoresponsive host-guest composite (PHGC) adsorbents exhibit photomodulated adsorption capacity on propylene (C₃ H₆ ) and the change in adsorption capacity can reach up to 43.3% and is stable during multiple cycles. Density functional theory calculations reveal that visible-light irradiation drives the azobenzene motifs in PHGCs to the trans configuration and the adsorption sites are fully open and interact with C₃ H₆ . UV-light irradiation makes the azobenzene motifs transform to the cis configuration, leading to the shield of the adsorption sites and the consequent release of C₃ H₆ .

Regulating π-Conjugation in sp2 -Carbon-Linked Covalent Organic Frameworks for Efficient Metal-Free CO2 Photoreduction with H2 O

The development of sp² -carbon-linked covalent organic frameworks (sp² c-COFs) as artificial photocatalysts for solar-driven conversion of CO₂ into chemical feedstock has captured growing attention, but catalytic performance has been significantly limited by their intrinsic organic linkages. Here, a simple, yet efficient approach is reported to improve the CO₂ photoreduction on metal-free sp² c-COFs by rationally regulating their intrinsic π-conjugation. The incorporation of ethynyl groups into conjugated skeletons affords a significant improvement in π-conjugation and facilitates the photogenerated charge separation and transfer, thereby boosting the CO₂ photoreduction in a solid-gas mode with only water vapor and CO₂ . The resultant CO production rate reaches as high as 382.0 µmol g^-1  h^-1 , ranking at the top among all additive-free CO₂ photoreduction catalysts. The simple modulation approach not only enables to achieve enhanced CO₂ reduction performance but also simultaneously gives a rise to extend the understanding of structure-property relationship and offer new possibilities for the development of new π-conjugated COF-based artificial photocatalysts.

Monolayer-Assisted Surface-Initiated Schiff-Base-Mediated Aldol Polycondensation for the Synthesis of Crystalline sp2 Carbon-Conjugated Covalent Organic Framework Thin Films

sp² carbon-conjugated covalent organic frameworks (sp²c-COFs) with superb in-plane π-conjugations, high chemical stability, and robust framework structure are expected to be ideal films/membranes for a wide range of applications including energy-related devices and optoelectronics. However, so far, sp²c-COFs have been mainly limited to microcrystalline powders, and this consequently hampered their performances in devices. Herein, we report a simple and robust methodology to fabricate large-area, free-standing, and crystalline sp²c-COF films (TFPT-TMT and TB-TMT) on various solid substrates (e.g., fluorine-doped tin oxide, aluminum sheet, polyacrylonitrile membrane) by self-assembly monolayer-assisted surface-initiated Schiff-base-mediated aldol polycondensation (namely, SI-SBMAP). The resultant sp²c-COF films show lateral sizes up to 120 cm² and tunable thickness from tens of nanometers to a few micrometers. Owing to the robust framework and highly ordered quasi-1D channels, the sp²c-COF membrane-based osmotic power generator presents an output power density of 14.1 W m^-2 under harsh conditions, outperforming most reported COF membranes as well as commercialized benchmark devices (5 W m^-2). This work demonstrates a simple and robust interfacial methodology for the fabrication of sp²c-COF films/membranes for green energy applications and potential optoelectronics.

Connecting the dots for fundamental understanding of structure-photophysics-property relationships of COFs, MOFs, and perovskites using a Multiparticle Holstein Formalism

Photoactive organic and hybrid organic-inorganic materials such as conjugated polymers, covalent organic frameworks (COFs), metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), and layered perovskites, display intriguing photophysical signatures upon interaction with light. Elucidating structure-photophysics-property relationships across a broad range of functional materials is nontrivial and requires our fundamental understanding of the intricate interplay among excitons (electron-hole pair), polarons (charges), bipolarons, phonons (vibrations), inter-layer stacking interactions, and different forms of structural and conformational defects. In parallel with electronic structure modeling and data-driven science that are actively pursued to successfully accelerate materials discovery, an accurate, computationally inexpensive, and physically-motivated theoretical model, which consistently makes quantitative connections with conceptually complicated experimental observations, is equally important. Within this context, the first part of this perspective highlights a unified theoretical framework in which the electronic coupling as well as the local coupling between the electronic and nuclear degrees of freedom can be efficiently described for a broad range of quasiparticles with similarly structured Holstein-style vibronic Hamiltonians. The second part of this perspective discusses excitonic and polaronic photophysical signatures in polymers, COFs, MOFs, and perovskites, and attempts to bridge the gap between different research fields using a common theoretical construct - the Multiparticle Holstein Formalism. We envision that the synergistic integration of state-of-the-art computational approaches with the Multiparticle Holstein Formalism will help identify and establish new, transformative design strategies that will guide the synthesis and characterization of next-generation energy materials optimized for a broad range of optoelectronic, spintronic, and photonic applications.

Lighting up Micro-/Nanorobots with Fluorescence

Micro-/nanorobots (MNRs) can be autonomously propelled on demand in complex biological environments and thus may bring revolutionary changes to biomedicines. Fluorescence has been widely used in real-time imaging, chemo-/biosensing, and photo-(chemo-) therapy. The integration of MNRs with fluorescence generates fluorescent MNRs with unique advantages of optical trackability, on-the-fly environmental sensitivity, and targeting chemo-/photon-induced cytotoxicity. This review provides an up-to-date overview of fluorescent MNRs. After the highlighted elucidation about MNRs of various propulsion mechanisms and the introductory information on fluorescence with emphasis on the fluorescent mechanisms and materials, we systematically illustrate the design and preparation strategies to integrate MNRs with fluorescent substances and their biomedical applications in imaging-guided drug delivery, intelligent on-the-fly sensing and photo-(chemo-) therapy. In the end, we summarize the main challenges and provide an outlook on the future directions of fluorescent MNRs. This work is expected to attract and inspire researchers from different communities to advance the creation and practical application of fluorescent MNRs on a broad horizon.

Polarization Engineering of Covalent Triazine Frameworks for Highly Efficient Photosynthesis of Hydrogen Peroxide from Molecular Oxygen and Water

Two-electron oxygen photoreduction to hydrogen peroxide (H₂ O₂ ) is seriously inhibited by its sluggish charge kinetics. Herein, a polarization engineering strategy is demonstrated by grafting (thio)urea functional groups onto covalent triazine frameworks (CTFs), giving rise to significantly promoted charge separation/transport and obviously enhanced proton transfer. The thiourea-functionalized CTF (Bpt-CTF) presents a substantial improvement in the photocatalytic H₂ O₂ production rate to 3268.1 µmol h^-1 g^-1 with no sacrificial agents or cocatalysts that is over an order of magnitude higher than unfunctionalized CTF (Dc-CTF), and a remarkable quantum efficiency of 8.6% at 400 nm. Mechanistic studies reveal the photocatalytic performance is attributed to the prominently enhanced two-electron oxygen reduction reaction by forming endoperoxide at the triazine unit and highly concentrated holes at the thiourea site. The generated O₂ from water oxidation is subsequently consumed by the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), thereby boosting overall reaction kinetics. The findings suggest a powerful functional-groups-mediated polarization engineering method for the development of highly efficient metal-free polymer-based photocatalysts.

Covalent Organic Frameworks with Irreversible Linkages via Reductive Cyclization of Imines

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) show great potential for many advanced applications on account of their structural uniqueness. To address the synthetic challenges, facile chemical routes to engineer the porosity, crystallinity, and functionality of COFs are highly sought after. Herein, we report a synthetic approach that employs the Cadogan reaction to introduce nitrogen-containing heterocycles as the linkages in the framework. Irreversible indazole and benzimidazolylidene (BIY) linkages are introduced into COFs for the first time via phosphine-induced reductive cyclization of the common imine linkages following either stepwise or one-pot reaction protocols. The successful linkage transformation introduces new functionalities, as demonstrated in the case of BIY-COF, which displays excellent intrinsic proton conductivity without the need of impregnation with external proton transfer reagents. Such a general strategy will open the window to a broader class of functional porous crystalline materials.

Pressure-Induced Restricting Intermolecular Vibration of a Herringbone Dimer for Significantly Enhanced Multicolor Emission in Rotor-Free Truxene Crystals

Organic solid-state luminescent materials exhibit numerous exciting photoelectric properties that are central to emergent organic light-emitting diodes, smart sensors, and data encryption. However, the luminescence of pure organic rotor-free materials has been afflicted with strong intermolecular π-π stacking interactions. Herein, an unprecedented pressure-induced emission enhancement (PIEE) is realized in a system of rigid planar pure polycyclic aromatics, i.e., truxene crystals. The emission intensity is enhanced 7-fold below 3.0 GPa with a photoluminescence quantum yield increased to 10.17% compared with the initial value of 1.78%, and the emission colors change from green (520 nm) to red (640 nm) within 11.8 GPa. Spectral characterizations and first-principles calculations reveal that the PIEE and piezochromism can mainly be attributed to the restricted intermolecular vibration and the decreased energy gap. Our findings enrich the PIEE mechanism and provide a new guideline for designing pressure-responsive luminescent materials in advancing their photoelectric applications.

Resistive Memory Devices Based on Reticular Materials for Electrical Information Storage

Recently, reticular materials, such as metal-organic frameworks and covalent organic frameworks, have been proposed as an active insulating layer in resistive switching memory systems through their chemically tunable porous structure. A resistive random access memory (RRAM) cell, a digital memristor, is one of the most outstanding emergent memory devices that achieves high-density electrical information storage with variable electrical resistance states between two terminals. The overall design of the RRAM devices comprises an insulating layer sandwiched between two metal electrodes (metal/insulator/metal). RRAM devices with fast switching speeds and enhanced storage density have the potential to be manufactured with excellent scalability owing to their relatively simple device architecture. In this review, recent progress on the development of reticular material-based RRAM devices and the study of their operational mechanisms are reviewed, and new challenges and future perspectives related to reticular material-based RRAM are discussed.

The role of excited-state character, structural relaxation, and symmetry breaking in enabling delayed fluorescence activity in push-pull chromophores

Thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) is a current promising route for generating highly efficient light-emitting devices. However, the design process of new chromophores is hampered by the complicated underlying photophysics. In this work, four closely related donor-π-acceptor-π-donor systems are investigated, two of which were synthesised previously, with the aim of elucidating their varying effectiveness for TADF. We outline that the frontier orbitals are insufficient for discriminating between the molecules. Subsequently, a detailed analysis of the excited states at a correlated ab initio level highlights the presence of a number of closely spaced singlet and triplet states of varying character. Results from five density functionals are compared against this reference revealing dramatic changes in, both, excited state energies and wavefunctions following variations in the amount of Hartree-Fock exchange included. Excited-state minima are optimised in solution showing the crucial role of structural variations and symmetry breaking for producing a strongly emissive S₁ state. The adiabatic singlet-triplet gaps thus obtained depend strongly on the range separation parameter used in the hybrid density functional calculations. More generally, this work highlights intricate differences present between singlet and triplet excited state wavefunctions and the challenges in describing them accurately.

Ionic Covalent Organic Frameworks for Energy Devices

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are a class of porous crystalline materials whose facile preparation, functionality, and modularity have led to their becoming powerful platforms for the development of molecular devices in many fields of (bio)engineering, such as energy storage, environmental remediation, drug delivery, and catalysis. In particular, ionic COFs (iCOFs) are highly useful for constructing energy devices, as their ionic functional groups can transport ions efficiently, and the nonlabile and highly ordered all-covalent pore structures of their backbones provide ideal pathways for long-term ionic transport under harsh electrochemical conditions. Here, current research progress on the use of iCOFs for energy devices, specifically lithium-based batteries and fuel cells, is reviewed in terms of iCOF backbone-design strategies, synthetic approaches, properties, engineering techniques, and applications. iCOFs are categorized as anionic COFs or cationic COFs, and how each of these types of iCOFs transport lithium ions, protons, or hydroxides is illustrated. Finally, the current challenges to and future opportunities for the utilization of iCOFs in energy devices are described. This review will therefore serve as a useful reference on state-of-the-art iCOF design and application strategies focusing on energy devices.

Facile Construction of Covalent Organic Framework Nanozyme for Colorimetric Detection of Uranium

2D covalent organic frameworks (2D COFs) have been recognized as a novel class of photoactive materials owing to their extended π-electron conjugation and high chemical stabilities. Herein, a new covalent organic framework (Tph-BDP) is facilely synthesized by using a porphyrin derivative and an organic dye BODIPY derivative (5,5-difluoro-2,8-diformyl-1,3,7,9-tetramethyl-10-phenyl-5H-dipyrrolo[1,2-c:2',1'-f][1,3,2]diazabori-nin-4-ium-5-uide) as monomers for the first time, and their unique photosensitive properties endow them excellent simulated oxidase activity under 635 nm laser irradiation that can catalyze the oxidation of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB). Further findings demonstrate that the presence of uranium (UO₂²⁺ ) can coordinate with imines of the oxidation products of TMB, thus modulating the charge transfer process of the colored products accompanied with intensive aggregation and remarkable color fading. This research provides a preparation strategy for COFs with excellent photocatalytic properties and nanozyme activity, and broadens the applications of the simple colorimetric methods for sensitive and selective radionuclide detection.

Arousing Electrochemiluminescence Out of Non-Electroluminescent Monomers within Covalent Organic Frameworks

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with stable long-range ordered arrangements are promising materials for organic optoelectronics. However, their electrochemiluminescence (ECL) from non-ECL active monomers has not been realized. Here, we report a design strategy for ECL-emitting COF family. The donors and acceptors co-crystallized and stacked into the highly aligned array of olefin-linked COFs, so that electrons can be transported freely. By this means, a tunable ECL is activated from non-ECL molecules with the maximum efficiency of 32.1% in water with the dissolved oxygen as an inner coreactant, and no additional noxious co-reactant is needed any more. Quantum chemistry calculations further demonstrate that this design reduces the COFs' band gaps and the overlap of electrons and holes in the excited state for better photoelectric properties and stronger ECL signals. This work exploits a basis to envisage the broad application potential of ECL-COFs for various biosensors and light-emitting display.

Visible Light-Regulated Heterogeneous Catalytic PET-RAFT by High Crystallinity Covalent Organic Framework

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are a class of promising photocatalysts for conversing light energy into chemical energy. Based on the tunable building blocks, COFs can be well-designed as photocatalyst for mediating reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) polymerization. Herein, 1,3,6,8-tetrakis(4-formylphenyl)pyrene (TFPPy) and 2,2″-bipyridine-5,5″-diamine (Bpy) are chosen to construct imine-based TFPPy-Bpy-COFs for catalyzing RAFT polymerization of methacrylates under white light irradiation. The well-defined polymers with precise molecular weight and narrow molecular weight distribution are obtained. The switch on/off light experiments suggest excellent temporal control toward RAFT polymerization system and the chain-extension reaction indicates high chain-end fidelity of macro-initiators. Mechanism study clarifies that the electron transfer between excited state of TFPPy-Bpy-COFs and RAFT agent can form living radicals to mediate polymerization. This methodology provides a novel platform for reversible-deactivation radical polymerization using COFs as heterogeneous catalysts.

Beyond structural motifs: the frontier of actinide-containing metal-organic frameworks

In this perspective, we feature recent advances in the field of actinide-containing metal-organic frameworks (An-MOFs) with a main focus on their electronic, catalytic, photophysical, and sorption properties. This discussion deviates from a strictly crystallographic analysis of An-MOFs, reported in several reviews, or synthesis of novel structural motifs, and instead delves into the remarkable potential of An-MOFs for evolving the nuclear waste administration sector. Currently, the An-MOF field is dominated by thorium- and uranium-containing structures, with only a few reports on transuranic frameworks. However, some of the reported properties in the field of An-MOFs foreshadow potential implementation of these materials and are the main focus of this report. Thus, this perspective intends to provide a glimpse into the challenges, triumphs, and future directions of An-MOFs in sectors ranging from the traditional realm of gas sorption and separation to recently emerging areas such as electronics and photophysics.
