Dynamic Stereochemical Activity of the Sn2+ Lone Pair in Perovskite CsSnBr3

Stereo-Active Lone Pairs Induced Second Harmonic Generation Responses and Electrocatalytic Activity in Hybrid Material

The lone pair electrons in the electronic structure of molecules have been a prominent research focus in chemistry for more than a century. Stable s2 lone pair electrons significantly influence material properties, including thermoelectric properties, nonlinear optical properties, ferroelectricity, and electro(photo)catalysis. While major advances have been achieved in understanding the influence of lone pair electrons on material characteristics, research on this effect in organic-inorganic hybrid materials is in its initial stage. In this work, we successfully obtained a novel organic-inorganic hybrid multifunctional material incorporating Ge with 4s2 lone pair electrons, (MeHDabco)2[GeBr3]4-H2O (MeHDabco=N-methyl-1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane) (1). Driven by the stereochemically active lone pair electrons on the Ge2+, 1 crystallizes in the noncentrosymmetric space group P21 at room temperature and exhibits good second harmonic generation (SHG) responses. Interestingly, 1 also shows electrocatalytic activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) due to the existence of lone pair electrons on Ge2+ cations. The electrochemical experiment combined with the density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the lone pair electrons act as both an active site for proton adsorption and facilitate the ionization of water. This work not only emphasizes the important role of lone pair electrons in material properties and functions but also provides new insight for designing novel Ge-based multifunctional hybrid materials.

Evidence of Lone Pair Crafted Emphanisis in the Ruddlesden-Popper Halide Perovskite Cs2PbI2Cl2

A hallmark of typical structural transformations is an increase in symmetry upon heating due to entropic favourability. However, local symmetry breaking upon warming is recently evidenced in rare crystalline phases. Termed as emphanisis, the phenomenon implores exploration of fascinating thermodynamic nuances that drive unusual structural evolutions. Here, synchrotron X-ray total scattering measurements are presented on a Ruddlesden-Popper mixed halide perovskite, Cs2PbI2Cl2, which reveal signatures of emphanisis. The genesis of symmetry lowering upon heating is traced to a lone pair-driven cooperative local structural distortion composed of thermally actuated Pb off-centring and static Cl displacement. Mapping the thermal evolution of low-lying phonon modes with inelastic neutron scattering uncovers instances of mode hardening with picosecond lifetime and an intriguing soft mode at the X-point of the Brillouin zone-features conducive to ultralow thermal transport. Together, these observations highlight the fundamental and functional implications of chemical design in engendering unconventional phenomena in crystalline materials and associated properties.

Growth mechanism of oleylammonium-based tin and lead bromide perovskite nanostructures

Metal halide perovskites, particularly using tin and lead as bivalent cations, are well known for their synthetic versatility and ion mobility. These materials possess intriguing ionic properties that allow the formation of 2D Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) and 3D metal halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) under similar synthetic conditions. We studied the synthesis mechanism of oleylammonium-based Sn and Pb bromide perovskites 2D Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) in comparison with the 3D CsPbBr3 and CsSnBr3 NCs. Using experimental techniques in combination with theoretical calculations, we studied the interactions of the long-chain organic cations with the inorganic layers and between each other to assess their stability. Our findings suggest that tin bromide is more inclined toward forming higher-order RP phases or 3D NCs than lead bromide. Furthermore, we demonstrate the synthesis of precisely tuned CsSnBr3 3D NCs (7 and 10 nm) using standard surface ligands. When the 3D and 2D tin halide perovskite nanostructures coexist in suspension, the obtained drop-cast thin films showed the preferential positioning of residual RP nanostructures at the interface with the substrate. This study encourages further exploration of low-dimensional hybrid materials and emphasizes the need for understanding mechanisms to develop efficient synthetic routes for high-quality tin-halide perovskite NCs.

Rational Design of A-Site Cation for High Performance Lead-Free Perovskite X-Ray Detectors

Design of hypotoxic lead-free perovskites, e.g. Bismuth(Bi)-based perovskites, is much beneficial for commercialization of perovskite X-ray detectors due to their strong radiation absorption. Nevertheless, the design principles governing the selection of A-site cations for achieving high-performance X-ray detectors remain elusive. Here, seven molecules (methylamine MA, amine NH3, dimethylbiguanide DGA, phenylethylamine PEA, 4-fluorophenethylamine p-FPEA, 1,3-propanediamine PDA, and 1,4-butanediamine BDA) and calculated their dipole moments and interaction strength with metal halide (BiI3) are selected. The first-principles calculations and related spectroscopy measurements confirm that organic molecules (DGA) with large dipole moments can have strong interactions with perovskite octahedron and improve the carrier transport between the organic and inorganic clusters. Consequently, zero-dimensional single crystal (SC) (DGA)BiI5∙H2O is synthesized. The (DGA)BiI5∙H2O SCs demonstrate an exceptional carrier mobility-lifetime product of 6.55 × 10-3 cm2 V-1, resulting in the high sensitivity of 5879.4 µCGyair -1cm-2, featuring a low detection limit (4.7 nGyair s-1) and remarkable X-ray irradiation stability even after 100 days of aging at a high electric field (100 V mm-1). Furthermore, the (DGA)BiI5∙H2O SCs for imaging, achieving a notable spatial resolution of 5.5 lp mm-1 are applied. This investigation establishes a pathway for systematically screening A-site cations to design low-dimensional SCs for high-performance X-ray detection.

Contrasting Ultra-Low Frequency Raman and Infrared Modes in Emerging Metal Halides for Photovoltaics

Lattice dynamics are critical to photovoltaic material performance, governing dynamic disorder, hot-carrier cooling, charge-carrier recombination, and transport. Soft metal-halide perovskites exhibit particularly intriguing dynamics, with Raman spectra exhibiting an unusually broad low-frequency response whose origin is still much debated. Here, we utilize ultra-low frequency Raman and infrared terahertz time-domain spectroscopies to provide a systematic examination of the vibrational response for a wide range of metal-halide semiconductors: FAPbI3, MAPbI x Br3-x , CsPbBr3, PbI2, Cs2AgBiBr6, Cu2AgBiI6, and AgI. We rule out extrinsic defects, octahedral tilting, cation lone pairs, and "liquid-like" Boson peaks as causes of the debated central Raman peak. Instead, we propose that the central Raman response results from an interplay of the significant broadening of Raman-active, low-energy phonon modes that are strongly amplified by a population component from Bose-Einstein statistics toward low frequency. These findings elucidate the complexities of light interactions with low-energy lattice vibrations in soft metal-halide semiconductors emerging for photovoltaic applications.

Pressure-induced shape and color changes and mechanical-stimulation-driven reverse transition in a one-dimensional hybrid halide

Dynamic crystals with directional deformations in response to external stimuli through molecular reconfiguration, are observed predominantly in certain organic crystals and metal complexes. Low-dimensional hybrid halides, resemble these materials due to the presence of strong hydrogen bonds between bulky organic moieties and inorganic units, whereas their dynamic behavior remains largely unexplored. Here we show that a one-dimensional hybrid halide (MV)BiBr5 (MV = methylviologen) undergoes an isosymmetric phase transition at hydrostatic pressure of 0.20 GPa, accompanied by a remarkable length expansion of 20-30% and red to dark yellow color change. Unexpectedly, the backward transition can be fully reversed by mechanical stimulation rather than decompression. In the high-pressure phase, the coexistence of strong Bi3+ lone pair stereochemical activity and large reorientations of the planar MV2+ cations, together with the newly formed CH···Br hydrogen interactions, are the structural features that facilitate microscopic changes and stabilize the metastable high-pressure phase at ambient conditions.

Internal strain-driven bond manipulation and band engineering in Bi2-x Sb x YO4Cl photocatalysts with triple fluorite layers

In extended solid-state materials, the manipulation of chemical bonds through redox reactions often leads to the emergence of interesting properties, such as unconventional superconductivity, which can be achieved by adjusting the Fermi level through, e.g., intercalation and pressure. Here, we demonstrate that the internal 'biaxial strain' in tri-layered fluorite oxychloride photocatalysts can regulate bond formation and cleavage without redox processes. We achieve this by synthesizing the isovalent solid solution Bi2-x Sb x YO4Cl, which undergoes a structural phase transition from the ideal Bi2YO4Cl structure to the Sb2YO4Cl structure with (Bi,Sb)4O8 rings. Initially, substitution of smaller Sb induces expected lattice contraction, but further substitution beyond x > 0.6 triggers an unusual lattice expansion before the phase transition at x = 1.5. Detailed analysis reveals structural instability at high x values, characterized by Sb-O underbonding, which is attributed to tensile strain exerted from the inner Y sublayer to the outer (Bi,Sb)O sublayer within the triple fluorite block - a concept well-recognized in thin film studies. This concept also explains the formation of zigzag Bi-O chains in Bi2MO4Cl (M = Bi, La). The Sb substitution in Bi2-x Sb x YO4Cl elevates the valence band maximum, resulting in a minimized bandgap of 2.1 eV around x = 0.6, which is significantly smaller than those typically observed in oxychlorides, allowing the absorption of a wider range of light wavelengths. Given the predominance of materials with a double fluorite layer in previous studies, our findings highlight the potential of compounds endowed with triple or thicker fluorite layers as a novel platform for band engineering that utilizes biaxial strain from the inner layer(s) to finely control their electronic structures.

Hidden structures: a driving factor to achieve low thermal conductivity and high thermoelectric performance

The long-range periodic atomic arrangement or the lack thereof in solids typically dictates the magnitude and temperature dependence of their lattice thermal conductivity (κlat). Compared to crystalline materials, glasses exhibit a much-suppressed κlat across all temperatures as the phonon mean free path reaches parity with the interatomic distances therein. While the occurrence of such glass-like thermal transport in crystalline solids captivates the scientific community with its fundamental inquiry, it also holds the potential for profoundly impacting the field of thermoelectric energy conversion. Therefore, efficient manipulation of thermal transport and comprehension of the microscopic mechanisms dictating phonon scattering in crystalline solids are paramount. As quantized lattice vibrations (i.e., phonons) drive κlat, atomistic insights into the chemical bonding characteristics are crucial to have informed knowledge about their origins. Recently, it has been observed that within the highly symmetric 'averaged' crystal structures, often there are hidden locally asymmetric atomic motifs (within a few Å), which exert far-reaching influence on phonon transport. Phenomena such as local atomic off-centering, atomic rattling or tunneling, liquid-like atomic motion, site splitting, local ordering, etc., which arise within a few Å scales, are generally found to drastically disrupt the passage of heat carrying phonons. Despite their profound implication(s) for phonon dynamics, they are often overlooked by traditional crystallographic techniques. In this review, we provide a brief overview of the fundamental aspects of heat transport and explore the status quo of innately low thermally conductive crystalline solids, wherein the phonon dynamics is majorly governed by local structural phenomena. We also discuss advanced techniques capable of characterizing the crystal structure at the sub-atomic level. Subsequently, we delve into the emergent new ideas with examples linked to local crystal structure and lattice dynamics. While discussing the implications of the local structure for thermal conductivity, we provide the state-of-the-art examples of high-performance thermoelectric materials. Finally, we offer our viewpoint on the experimental and theoretical challenges, potential new paths, and the integration of novel strategies with material synthesis to achieve low κlat and realize high thermoelectric performance in crystalline solids via local structure designing.

Noncollinear Electric Dipoles in a Polar Chiral Phase of CsSnBr3 Perovskite

Polar and chiral crystal symmetries confer a variety of potentially useful functionalities upon solids by coupling otherwise noninteracting mechanical, electronic, optical, and magnetic degrees of freedom. We describe two phases of the 3D perovskite, CsSnBr3, which emerge below 85 K due to the formation of Sn(II) lone pairs and their interaction with extant octahedral tilts. Phase II (77 K < T < 85 K, space group P21/m) exhibits ferroaxial order driven by a noncollinear pattern of lone pair-driven distortions within the plane normal to the unique octahedral tilt axis, preserving the inversion symmetry observed at higher temperatures. Phase I (T < 77 K, space group P21) additionally exhibits ferroelectric order due to distortions along the unique tilt axis, breaking both inversion and mirror symmetries. This polar and chiral phase exhibits second harmonic generation from the bulk and pronounced electrostriction and negative thermal expansion along the polar axis (Q22 ≈ 1.1 m4 C-2; αb = -7.8 × 10-5 K-1) through the onset of polarization. The structures of phases I and II were predicted by recursively following harmonic phonon instabilities to generate a tree of candidate structures and subsequently corroborated by synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction and polarized Raman and 81Br nuclear quadrupole resonance spectroscopies. Preliminary attempts to suppress unintentional hole doping to allow for ferroelectric switching are described. Together, the polar symmetry, small band gap, large spin-orbit splitting of Sn 5p orbitals, and predicted strain sensitivity of the symmetry-breaking distortions suggest bulk samples and epitaxial films of CsSnBr3 or its neighboring solid solutions as candidates for bulk Rashba effects.

Structural Evolution and Photoluminescence Quenching across the FASnI3-xBrx (x = 0-3) Perovskites

One of the primary methods for band gap tuning in metal halide perovskites has been halide (I/Br) mixing. Despite widespread usage of this type of chemical substitution in perovskite photovoltaics, there is still little understanding of the structural impacts of halide alloying, with the assumption being the formation of ideal solid solutions. The FASnI3-xBrx (x = 0-3) family of compounds provides the first example where the assumption breaks down, as the composition space is broken into two unique regimes (x = 0-2.9; x = 2.9-3) based on their average structure with the former having a 3D and the latter having an extended 3D (pseudo 0D) structure. Pair distribution function (PDF) analyses further suggest a dynamic 5s2 lone pair expression resulting in increasing levels of off-centering of the central Sn as the Br concentration is increased. These antiferroelectric distortions indicate that even the x = 0-2.9 phase space behaves as a nonideal solid-solution on a more local scale. Solid-state NMR confirms the difference in local structure yielding greater insight into the chemical nature and local distributions of the FA+ cation. In contrast to the FAPbI3-xBrx series, a drastic photoluminescence (PL) quenching is observed with x ≥ 1.9 compounds having no observable PL. Our detailed studies attribute this quenching to structural transitions induced by the distortions of the [SnBr6] octahedra in response to stereochemically expressed lone pairs of electrons. This is confirmed through density functional theory, having a direct impact on the electronic structure.

Suppressed Lone Pair Electrons Explain Unconventional Rise of Lattice Thermal Conductivity in Defective Crystalline Solids

Manipulating thermal properties of materials can be interpreted as the control of how vibrations of atoms (known as phonons) scatter in a crystal lattice. Compared to a perfect crystal, crystalline solids with defects are expected to have shorter phonon mean free paths caused by point defect scattering, leading to lower lattice thermal conductivities than those without defects. While this is true in many cases, alloying can increase the phonon mean free path in the Cd-doped AgSnSbSe3 system to increase the lattice thermal conductivity from 0.65 to 1.05 W m-1 K-1 by replacing 18% of the Sb sites with Cd. It is found that the presence of lone pair electrons leads to the off-centering of cations from the centrosymmetric position of a cubic lattice. X-ray pair distribution function analysis reveals that this structural distortion is relieved when the electronic configuration of the dopant element cannot produce lone pair electrons. Furthermore, a decrease in the Grüneisen parameter with doping is experimentally confirmed, establishing a relationship between the stereochemical activity of lone pair electrons and the lattice anharmonicity. The observed "harmonic" behavior with doping suggests that lone pair electrons must be preserved to effectively suppress phonon transport in these systems.

Dual Polarization Strategy for Boosting Electron-Hole Separation toward Overall Water Splitting within Ferroelectric β-AIBIIIO2 (BIII = P3+, As3+, Sb3+, and Bi3+ for Lone Pairs)

Ferroelectric materials, leveraging an inherent built-in electric field, are excellent in suppressing electron-hole recombination. However, the reliance solely on bulk polarization remains insufficient in enhancing carriers' separation and migration, limiting their practical application in photocatalytic overall water splitting (POWS). To address this, we incorporated cations with ns2 lone pairs (P3+, As3+, Sb3+, and Bi3+) into ferroelectric semiconductors, successfully constructing 44 β-AIBIIIO2 photocatalysts with dual polarization. Through rigorous first-principles calculations and screenings for stability, band characteristics, and polarization, we identified four promising candidates: β-LiSbO2, β-NaSbO2, β-LiBiO2, and β-TlBiO2. Within these materials, lone pairs induce local polarization in the xy-plane. Additionally, out of the plane, there is robust bulk polarization along the z-direction. This synergistic effect of the combined local and bulk polarization significantly improves the separation efficiency of electron-hole pairs. Explicitly, the electron mobility of the four candidates ranges from 105 to 106 cm2 s-1 V-1, while the hole mobility also increases significantly compared to single-phase polarized materials, up to 106 cm2 s-1 V-1. Notably, β-TlBiO2 is predicted to achieve a solar-to-hydrogen (STH) efficiency of 17.2%. This study not only offers insights for water-splitting catalyst screening but also pioneers a path for electron-hole separation through the dual polarization strategy.

Disentangling the effects of structure and lone-pair electrons in the lattice dynamics of halide perovskites

Halide perovskites show great optoelectronic performance, but their favorable properties are paired with unusually strong anharmonicity. It was proposed that this combination derives from the ns2 electron configuration of octahedral cations and associated pseudo-Jahn-Teller effect. We show that such cations are not a prerequisite for the strong anharmonicity and low-energy lattice dynamics encountered in these materials. We combine X-ray diffraction, infrared and Raman spectroscopies, and molecular dynamics to contrast the lattice dynamics of CsSrBr3 with those of CsPbBr3, two compounds that are structurally similar but with the former lacking ns2 cations with the propensity to form electron lone pairs. We exploit low-frequency diffusive Raman scattering, nominally symmetry-forbidden in the cubic phase, as a fingerprint of anharmonicity and reveal that low-frequency tilting occurs irrespective of octahedral cation electron configuration. This highlights the role of structure in perovskite lattice dynamics, providing design rules for the emerging class of soft perovskite semiconductors.

Is Ba3In2O6a high-Tcsuperconductor?

It has been suggested that Ba3In2O6might be a high-Tcsuperconductor. Experimental investigation of the properties of Ba3In2O6was long inhibited by its instability in air. Recently epitaxial Ba3In2O6with a protective capping layer was demonstrated, which finally allows its electronic characterization. The optical bandgap of Ba3In2O6is determined to be 2.99 eV in-the (001) plane and 2.83 eV along thec-axis direction by spectroscopic ellipsometry. First-principles calculations were carried out, yielding a result in good agreement with the experimental value. Various dopants were explored to induce (super-)conductivity in this otherwise insulating material. NeitherA- norB-site doping proved successful. The underlying reason is predominately the formation of oxygen interstitials as revealed by scanning transmission electron microscopy and first-principles calculations. Additional efforts to induce superconductivity were investigated, including surface alkali doping, optical pumping, and hydrogen reduction. To probe liquid-ion gating, Ba3In2O6was successfully grown epitaxially on an epitaxial SrRuO3bottom electrode. So far none of these efforts induced superconductivity in Ba3In2O6,leaving the answer to the initial question of whether Ba3In2O6is a high-Tcsuperconductor to be 'no' thus far.

Near-Infrared Light Emitting Metal Halides: Materials, Mechanisms, and Applications

Near-Infrared (NIR) light emitting metal halides are emerging as a new generation of optical materials owing to their appealing features, which include low-cost synthesis, solution processability, and adjustable optical properties. NIR-emitting perovskite-based light-emitting diodes (LEDs) have reached an external quantum efficiency (EQE) of over 20% and a device stability of over 10,000 h. Such results have sparked an interest in exploring new NIR metal halide emitters. In this review, several different types of NIR-emitting metal halides, including lead/tin bromide/iodide perovskites, lanthanide ions doped/based metal halides, double perovskites, low dimensional hybrid and Bi3+/Sb3+/Cr3+ doped metal halides, are summarized, and their recent advancement is assessed. The characteristics and mechanisms of narrow-band or broadband NIR luminescence in all these materials are discussed in detail. Also, the various applications of NIR-emitting metal halides are highlighted and an outlook for the field is provided.

A-Site Cation Influence on the Structural and Optical Evolution of Ultrathin Lead Halide Perovskite Nanoplatelets

Imposing quantum confinement has the potential to significantly modulate both the structural and optical parameters of interest in many material systems. In this work, we investigate strongly confined ultrathin perovskite nanoplatelets APbBr3. We compare the all-inorganic and hybrid compositions with the A-sites cesium and formamidinium, respectively. Compared to each other and their bulk counterparts, the materials show significant differences in variable-temperature structural and optical evolution. We quantify and correlate structural asymmetry with the excitonic transition energy, spectral purity, and emission rate. Negative thermal expansion, structural and photoluminescence asymmetry, photoluminescence full width at half-maximum, and splitting between bright and dark excitonic levels are found to be reduced in the hybrid composition. This work provides composition- and structure-based mechanisms for engineering of the excitons in these materials.

Structural and optical control through anion and cation exchange processes for Sn-halide perovskite nanostructures

Metal halide perovskite nanostructures, characterized by their ionic nature, present a compelling avenue for the tunability of dimensions and band gaps through facile compositional transformations involving both cationic and anionic exchange reactions. While post-synthetic ion-exchange processes have been extensively explored in Pb-halide perovskite nanocrystals, the inherent instability of Sn2+ has limited the exploration of such processes in Sn-halide perovskite nanostructures. In this study, we present a straightforward cation exchange process wherein 2D [R-NH3]2SnX4 Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) nanostructures with n = 1 transition to 3D ASnX3 nanocrystals at room temperature with the addition of A-cation oleate. In addition, anion exchange processes have been demonstrated for both 2D [R-NH3]2SnX4 RP nanostructures and 3D nanocrystals, showcasing transitions between iodide and bromide counterparts. Furthermore, we have fabricated a thin film of 2D [R-NH3]2SnX4 RP nanostructures for cation exchange, wherein A-cation diffusion through a liquid-solid interface facilitates the transformation into a 3D ASnX3 crystal. This investigation underscores the versatility of ion exchange processes in engineering the composition of Sn-halide perovskite nanostructures and, consequently, modulating their optical properties.

[NH3(CH2)4NH3]SnX4 (X = Br, I): Dion-Jacobson type 2-D perovskites with short interlayer spacing

Two-dimensional tin(II) halide perovskites stand as an environmentally benign alternative to Pb(II) halide perovskites. However, they are often challenging to make due to the oxidation of Sn(II) ion to more stable Sn(IV) ion. Here we report hybrid tin bromide and iodide perovskites: (1,4-BDA)Sn(IV)Br6 and (1,4-BDA)Sn(II)X4 (where X = Br, I; 1,4-BDA = 1,4-diammoniumbutane) with 0D and 2D structures, respectively. Their synthesis, structural characterization and photophysical properties are reported. They show bandgaps in the 1.94-2.70 eV range.

Manipulating Lone-Pair-Driven Luminescence in 0D Tin Halides by Pressure-Tuned Stereochemical Activity from Static to Dynamic

The excellent luminescence properties and structural dynamics driven by the stereoactivity of the lone pair in a variety of low-dimensional ns2 metal halides have attracted growing investigations for optoelectronic applications. However, the structural and photophysical aspects of the excited state associated with the lone pair expression are currently open questions. Herein, zero-dimensional Sn-based halides with static stereoactive 5 s2 lone pairs are selected as a model system to understand the correlations between the distinctive lone pair expression and the excited-state structural relaxation and charge carrier dynamics by continuous lattice manipulation. Lattice compression drives 5 s2 lone pair active switching and self-trapped exciton (STE) redistribution by suppressing excited-state structural deformation of the isolated SnBr4 2- units. Our results demonstrate that the static expression of the 5 s2 lone pair results in a red broadband triplet STE emission with a large Stokes shift, while its dynamic expression creates a sky-blue narrowband emission dominated by the radiative recombination of singlet STEs. Our findings and the photophysical mechanism proposed highlight the stereochemical effects of lone pair expression in controlling light emission properties and offer constructive guidelines for tuning the optoelectronic properties in diverse ns2 metal halides.

Dynamic Lone Pairs and Fluoride-Ion Disorder in Cubic-BaSnF4

Introducing compositional or structural disorder within crystalline solid electrolytes is a common strategy for increasing their ionic conductivity. (M,Sn)F2 fluorites have previously been proposed to exhibit two forms of disorder within their cationic host frameworks: occupational disorder from randomly distributed M and Sn cations and orientational disorder from Sn(II) stereoactive lone pairs. Here, we characterize the structure and fluoride-ion dynamics of cubic BaSnF4, using a combination of experimental and computational techniques. Rietveld refinement of the X-ray diffraction (XRD) data confirms an average fluorite structure with {Ba,Sn} cation disorder, and the 119Sn Mössbauer spectrum demonstrates the presence of stereoactive Sn(II) lone pairs. X-ray total-scattering PDF analysis and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations reveal a complex local structure with a high degree of intrinsic fluoride-ion disorder, where 1/3 of fluoride ions occupy octahedral "interstitial" sites: this fluoride-ion disorder is a consequence of repulsion between Sn lone pairs and fluoride ions that destabilizes Sn-coordinated tetrahedral fluoride-ion sites. Variable-temperature 19F NMR experiments and analysis of our molecular dynamics simulations reveal highly inhomogeneous fluoride-ion dynamics, with fluoride ions in Sn-rich local environments significantly more mobile than those in Ba-rich environments. Our simulations also reveal dynamical reorientation of the Sn lone pairs that is biased by the local cation configuration and coupled to the local fluoride-ion dynamics. We end by discussing the effect of host-framework disorder on long-range diffusion pathways in cubic BaSnF4.

Broadband emission originating from the stereochemical expression of 6s2 lone pairs in two-dimensional lead bromide perovskites

The stereochemical expression of the 6s2 lone pair on the lead atom has a significant impact on the crystal structures and physical properties of lead halide perovskites. Two-dimensional (2D) lead bromide perovskites often exhibit a broadband emission, yet the structural origin of the broadband emission has been under debate. Here, we report the synthesis and characterization of a 2D lead bromide hybrid (4-chlorophenylammonium)2PbBr4 that consists of a combination of the octahedral unit PbBr6 and the rarely observed capped octahedral unit PbBr7 through corner-sharing and edge-sharing linkages. The seven-coordination geometry indicates a strong stereo-active lone pair on the Pb2+ cation. By comparing this structure with two representative 2D perovskites, (benzylammonium)2PbBr4 and (4-aminotetrahydropyran)2PbBr4, we establish how the lone pair expression affects the local coordination geometry of the Pb2+ cation and the resulting optical and electronic properties. As the Pb-Br bond length increases, the lone pair expression leads to off-centering displacement of Pb2+ within the octahedra and then the formation of seven-coordination capped octahedra. Density functional theory calculations indicate that the off-centering distorted octahedra and capped octahedra are due to the asymmetric distribution of the Pb electrons that have both s and p orbital characteristics. Spectroscopic studies show the photoluminescence spectra evolving from narrowband emission to broadband emission with increasing LPE, as well as softer and more anharmonic lattice vibrations that facilitate exciton self-trapping. Our results demonstrate that lone pairs could be a powerful design rule for developing light emitting materials.

Octahedral Distortions Generate a Thermally Activated Phonon-Assisted Radiative Recombination Pathway in Cubic CsPbBr3 Perovskite Quantum Dots

Exciton-phonon interactions elucidate structure-function relationships that aid in the control of color purity and carrier diffusion, which is necessary for the performance-driven design of solid-state optical emitters. Temperature-dependent steady-state photoluminescence (PL) and time-resolved PL (TRPL) reveal that thermally activated exciton-phonon interactions originate from structural distortions related to vibrations in cubic CsPbBr3 perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) at room temperature. Exciton-phonon interactions cause performance-degrading PL line width broadening and slower electron-hole recombination. Structural distortions in cubic PQDs at room temperature exist as the bending and stretching of the PbBr6 octahedra subunit. The PbBr6 octahedral distortions cause symmetry breaking, resulting in thermally activated longitudinal optical (LO) phonon coupling to the photoexcited electron-hole pair that manifests as inhomogeneous PL line width broadening. At cryogenic temperatures, the line width broadening is minimized due to a decrease in phonon-assisted recombination through shallow traps. A fundamental understanding of these intrinsic exciton-phonon interactions gives insight into the polymorphic nature of the cubic phase and the origins of performance degradation in PQD optical emitters.

Toggling Stereochemical Activity through Interstitial Positioning of Cations between 2D V2O5 Double Layers

The 5/6s2 lone-pair electrons of p-block cations in their lower oxidation states are a versatile electronic and geometric structure motif that can underpin lattice anharmonicity and often engender electronic and structural instabilities that underpin the function of active elements in nonlinear optics, thermochromics, thermoelectrics, neuromorphic computing, and photocatalysis. In contrast to periodic solids where lone-pair-bearing cations are part of the structural framework, installing lone-pair-bearing cations in the interstitial sites of intercalation hosts provides a means of a systematically modulating electronic structure through the choice of the group and the period of the inserted cation while preserving the overall framework connectivity. The extent of stereochemical activity and the energy positioning of lone-pair-derived mid-gap states depend on the cation identity, stoichiometry, and strength of anion hybridization. V2O5 polymorphs are versatile insertion hosts that can accommodate a broad range of s-, p-, and d-block cations. However, the insertion of lone-pair-bearing cations remains largely underexplored. In this article, we examine the implications of varying the 6s2 cations situated in interlayer sites between condensed [V4O10]n double layers. Systematic modulations of lattice distortions, electronic structure, and magnetic ordering are observed with increasing strength of stereochemical activity from group 12 to group 14 cations. We compare and contrast p-block-layered MxV2O5 (M = Hg, Tl, and Pb) compounds and map the significance of local off-centering arising from the stereochemical activity of lone-pair cations to the emergence of filled antibonding lone-pair 6s2-O 2p-hybridized mid-gap states mediated by second-order Jahn-Teller distortions. Crystallographic studies of cation coordination environments and the resulting modulation of V-V interactions have been used in conjunction with variable-energy hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements, first-principles electronic structure calculations, and crystal orbital Hamilton population analyses to decipher the origins of stereochemical activity. Magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal antiferromagnetic signatures for all the three compounds. However, the differences in V-V interactions significantly affect the energy balance of the superexchange interactions, resulting in an ordering temperature of 160 and 260 K for Hg0.5V2O5 and δ-Tl0.5V2O5, respectively, as compared to 7 K for δ-Pb0.5V2O5. In δ-Pb0.5V2O5, the strong stereochemical activity of electron lone pairs and the resulting electrostatic repulsions enforce superlattice ordering, which strongly modifies the electronic localization patterns along the [V4O10] slabs, resulting in disrupted magnetic ordering and an anomalously low ordering temperature. The results demonstrate a versatile strategy for toggling the stereochemical activity of electron lone pairs to modify the electronic structure near the Fermi level and to mediate superexchange interactions.

Synergy of 3D and 2D Perovskites for Durable, Efficient Solar Cells and Beyond

Three-dimensional (3D) organic-inorganic lead halide perovskites have emerged in the past few years as a promising material for low-cost, high-efficiency optoelectronic devices. Spurred by this recent interest, several subclasses of halide perovskites such as two-dimensional (2D) halide perovskites have begun to play a significant role in advancing the fundamental understanding of the structural, chemical, and physical properties of halide perovskites, which are technologically relevant. While the chemistry of these 2D materials is similar to that of the 3D halide perovskites, their layered structure with a hybrid organic-inorganic interface induces new emergent properties that can significantly or sometimes subtly be important. Synergistic properties can be realized in systems that combine different materials exhibiting different dimensionalities by exploiting their intrinsic compatibility. In many cases, the weaknesses of each material can be alleviated in heteroarchitectures. For example, 3D-2D halide perovskites can demonstrate novel behavior that neither material would be capable of separately. This review describes how the structural differences between 3D halide perovskites and 2D halide perovskites give rise to their disparate materials properties, discusses strategies for realizing mixed-dimensional systems of various architectures through solution-processing techniques, and presents a comprehensive outlook for the use of 3D-2D systems in solar cells. Finally, we investigate applications of 3D-2D systems beyond photovoltaics and offer our perspective on mixed-dimensional perovskite systems as semiconductor materials with unrivaled tunability, efficiency, and technologically relevant durability.

Effect of aliovalent bismuth substitution on structure and optical properties of CsSnBr3

Aliovalent substitution of the B component in ABX3 metal halides has often been proposed to modify the band gap and thus the photovoltaic properties, but details about the resulting structure have remained largely unknown. Here, we examine these effects in Bi-substituted CsSnBr3. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) and solid-state 119Sn, 133Cs and 209Bi nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy were carried out to infer how Bi substitution changes the structure of these compounds. The cubic perovskite structure is preserved upon Bi-substitution, but with disorder in the B site occurring at the atomic level. Bi atoms are randomly distributed as they substitute for Sn atoms with no evidence of Bi segregation. The absorption edge in the optical spectra shifts from 1.8 to 1.2 eV upon Bi-substitution, maintaining a direct band gap according to electronic structure calculations. It is shown that Bi-substitution improves resistance to degradation by inhibiting the oxidation of Sn.

The Tetrel Bond and Tetrel Halide Perovskite Semiconductors

The ion pairs [Cs+•TtX3-] (Tt = Pb, Sn, Ge; X = I, Br, Cl) are the building blocks of all-inorganic cesium tetrel halide perovskites in 3D, CsTtX3, that are widely regarded as blockbuster materials for optoelectronic applications such as in solar cells. The 3D structures consist of an anionic inorganic tetrel halide framework stabilized by the cesium cations (Cs+). We use computational methods to show that the geometrical connectivity between the inorganic monoanions, [TtX3-]∞, that leads to the formation of the TtX64- octahedra and the 3D inorganic perovskite architecture is the result of the joint effect of polarization and coulombic forces driven by alkali and tetrel bonds. Depending on the nature and temperature phase of these perovskite systems, the Tt···X tetrel bonds are either indistinguishable or somehow distinguishable from Tt-X coordinate bonds. The calculation of the potential on the electrostatic surface of the Tt atom in molecular [Cs+•TtX3-] provides physical insight into why the negative anions [TtX3-] attract each other when in close proximity, leading to the formation of the CsTtX3 tetrel halide perovskites in the solid state. The inter-molecular (and inter-ionic) geometries, binding energies, and charge density-based topological properties of sixteen [Cs+•TtX3-] ion pairs, as well as some selected oligomers [Cs+•PbI3-]n (n = 2, 3, 4), are discussed.

Controlled Assembly and Anomalous Thermal Expansion of Ultrathin Cesium Lead Bromide Nanoplatelets

Quantum confined lead halide perovskite nanoplatelets are anisotropic materials displaying strongly bound excitons with spectrally pure photoluminescence. We report the controlled assembly of CsPbBr₃ nanoplatelets through varying the evaporation rate of the dispersion solvent. We confirm the assembly of superlattices in the face-down and edge-up configurations by electron microscopy, as well as X-ray scattering and diffraction. Polarization-resolved spectroscopy shows that superlattices in the edge-up configuration display significantly polarized emission compared to face-down counterparts. Variable-temperature X-ray diffraction of both face-down and edge-up superlattices uncovers a uniaxial negative thermal expansion in ultrathin nanoplatelets, which reconciles the anomalous temperature dependence of the emission energy. Additional structural aspects are investigated by multilayer diffraction fitting, revealing a significant decrease in superlattice order with decreasing temperature, with a concomitant expansion of the organic sublattice and increase of lead halide octahedral tilt.

Dynamic Lone Pair Expression as Chemical Bonding Origin of Giant Phonon Anharmonicity in Thermoelectric InTe

Loosely bonded ("rattling") atoms with s² lone pair electrons are usually associated with strong anharmonicity and unexpectedly low thermal conductivity, yet their detailed correlation remains largely unknown. Here we resolve this correlation in thermoelectric InTe by combining chemical bonding analysis, inelastic X-ray and neutron scattering, and first principles phonon calculations. We successfully probe soft low-lying transverse phonons dominated by large In¹⁺ z-axis motions, and their giant anharmonicity. We show that the highly anharmonic phonons arise from the dynamic lone pair expression with unstable occupied antibonding states induced by the covalency between delocalized In¹⁺ 5s² lone pair electrons and Te 5p states. This work pinpoints the microscopic origin of strong anharmonicity driven by rattling atoms with stereochemical lone pair activity, important for designing efficient materials for thermoelectric energy conversion.

Cubic or Not Cubic? Combined Experimental and Computational Investigation of the Short-Range Order of Tin Halide Perovskites

Tin-based metal halide perovskites with a composition of ASnX₃ (where A= MA or FA and X = I or Br) have been investigated by means of X-ray total scattering techniques coupled to pair distribution function (PDF) analysis. These studies revealed that that none of the four perovskites has a cubic symmetry at the local scale and that a degree of increasing distortion is always present, in particular when the cation size is increased, i.e., from MA to FA, and the hardness of the anion is increased, i.e., from Br^- to I^-. Electronic structure calculations provided good agreement with experimental band gaps for the four perovskites when local dynamical distortions were included in the calculations. The averaged structure obtained from molecular dynamics simulations was consistent with experimental local structures determined via X-ray PDF, thus highlighting the robustness of computational modeling and strengthening the correlation between experimental and computational results.

Electron-Phonon Coupling Suppression by Enhanced Lattice Rigidity in 2D Perovskite Single Crystals for High-Performance X-Ray Detection

2D Dion-Jacobson (DJ) perovskite single crystals (PSCs) usually demonstrate better X-ray detection performance than Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) PSCs. However, the mechanism of the improved performance is still elusive. Here, by the aid of strong interactions between dimethylbiguanide (DGA) and PbI₂ , a novel DJ-perovskitoid (DGA)PbI₄ is designed. From the comparison of (DGA)PbI₄ to other 2D PSCs, it is discovered that the tiniest lattice distortion and increased hydrogen bonds in the atom-scaled analysis strengthen lattice rigidity and weaken electron-phonon coupling to suppress disordered scattering of carriers, resulting in significantly improved carrier transport and stability. Therefore, high carrier mobility (78.1 cm² V^-1 s^-1 ) and a pronounced sensitivity of 4869.0 µC Gy_air ^-1 cm^-2 are achieved using (DGA)PbI₄ , which are the best in 2D Pb-based PSC devices to date. Finally, the (DGA)PbI₄ devices exhibit good spatial resolution in X-ray imaging and excellent long-term stability to work as a promising candidate for medical diagnostics and nondestructive determination.

Stereochemically Active Lone Pairs and Nonlinear Optical Properties of Two-Dimensional Multilayered Tin and Germanium Iodide Perovskites

Two-dimensional (2D) metal halide perovskites are promising tunable semiconductors. Previous studies have focused on Pb-based structures, whereas the multilayered Sn- and Ge-based analogues are largely unexplored, even though they potentially exhibit more diverse structural chemistry and properties associated with the more polarizable ns² lone-pair electrons. Herein, we report the synthesis and structures of 2D tin iodide perovskites (BA)₂(A)Sn₂I₇, where BA = n-butylammonium and A = methylammonium, formamidinium, dimethylammonium, guanidinium, or acetamidinium, and those of 2D germanium iodide perovskites (BA)₂(A)Ge₂I₇, where A = methylammonium or formamidinium. By comparing these structures along with their Pb counterparts, we establish correlations between the effect of group IV-cation's lone-pair stereochemical activity on the perovskite crystal structures and the resulting semiconducting properties such as bandgaps and carrier-phonon interactions and nonlinear optical properties. We find that the strength of carrier-phonon interaction increases with increasing lone-pair activity, leading to a more prominent photoluminescence tail on the low-energy side. Moreover, (BA)₂(A)Ge₂I₇ exhibit strong second harmonic generation with second-order nonlinear coefficients of ∼10 pm V^-1 that are at least 10 times those of Sn counterparts and 100 times those of Pb counterparts. We also report the third-order two-photon absorption coefficients of (BA)₂(A)Sn₂I₇ to be ∼10 cm MW^-1, which are one order of magnitude larger than those of the Pb counterparts and traditional inorganic semiconductors. These results not only highlight the role of lone-pair activity in linking the compositions and physical properties of 2D halide perovskites but also demonstrate 2D tin and germanium iodide perovskites as promising lead-free alternatives for nonlinear optoelectronic devices.

Compositional Variation in FAPb1-xSnxI3 and Its Impact on the Electronic Structure: A Combined Density Functional Theory and Experimental Study

Given their comparatively narrow band gap, mixed Pb-Sn iodide perovskites are interesting candidates for bottom cells in all-perovskite tandems or single junction solar cells, and their luminescence around 900 nm offers great potential for near-infrared optoelectronics. Here, we investigate mixed FAPb_1-xSn_xI₃ offering the first accurate determination of the crystal structure over a temperature range from 293 to 100 K. We demonstrate that all compositions exhibit a cubic structure at room temperature and undergo at least two transitions to lower symmetry tetragonal phases upon cooling. Using density functional theory (DFT) calculations based on these structures, we subsequently reveal that the main impact on the band gap bowing is the different energy of the s and p orbital levels derived from Pb and Sn. In addition, this energy mismatch results in strongly composition-dependent luminescence characteristics. Whereas neat and Sn-rich compounds exhibit bright and narrow emission with a clean band gap, Sn-poor compounds intrinsically suffer from increased carrier recombination mediated by in-gap states, as evidenced by the appearance of pronounced low-energy photoluminescence upon cooling. This study is the first to link experimentally determined structures of FAPb_1-xSn_xI₃ with the electronic properties, and we demonstrate that optoelectronic applications based on Pb-Sn iodide compounds should employ Sn-rich compositions.

Cs4CuSb2Cl12-xIx(x = 0-10) nanocrystals for visible light photodetection

Lead-free layered double perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) with tunable visible range emission, high carrier mobility and low trap density are the need of the hour to make them applicable for optoelectronic and photovoltaic devices. Introduction of Cu²⁺in the high band gap Cs₃Sb₂Cl₉lattice transforms it to the monoclinic Cs₄CuSb₂Cl₁₂(CCSC) NCs having a direct band gap of 1.96 eV. The replacement of 50% Cl^-by I^-ions generates <5 nm Cs₄CuSb₂Cl₆I₆(C6I6) monodispersed NCs with an unchanged crystal system but with further lowering of the band gap to 1.92 eV. Thep-type C6I6 NCs exhibit emission spectra, lower trap density, appreciable hole mobility and most importantly a lower exciton binding energy of only 50.8 ± 1.3 meV. The temperature dependent photoluminescence (PL) spectra of the C6I6 NCs show a decrease in non-radiative recombination from 300 K down to 78 K. When applied as the photoactive layer in out-of-plane photodetector devices, C6I6 NC devices exhibit an appreciable responsivity of 0.67 A W^-1at 5 V, detectivity of 4.55 × 10⁸Jones (2.5 V), and fast photoresponse with rise and fall time of 126 and 94 ms, respectively. On the other hand, higher I^-substitution in Cs₄CuSb₂Cl₂I₁₀NCs (C2I10) degrades the lattice into a mixture of monoclinic and trigonal crystal phases, which also lowers the device performance.

Understanding Electron-Phonon Interactions in 3D Lead Halide Perovskites from the Stereochemical Expression of 6s2 Lone Pairs

The electron-phonon (e-ph) interaction in lead halide perovskites (LHPs) plays a role in a variety of physical phenomena. Unveiling how the local lattice distortion responds to charge carriers is a critical step toward understanding the e-ph interaction in LHPs. Herein, we advance a fundamental understanding of the e-ph interaction in LHPs from the perspective of stereochemical activity of 6s² lone-pair electrons on the Pb²⁺ cation. We demonstrate a model system based on three LHPs with distinctive lone-pair activities for studying the structure-property relationships. By tuning the A-cation chemistry, we synthesized single-crystal CsPbBr₃, (MA_0.13EA_0.87)PbBr₃ (MA⁺ = methylammonium; EA⁺ = ethylammonium), and (MHy)PbBr₃ (MHy⁺ = methylhydrazinium), which exhibit stereo-inactive, dynamic stereo-active, and static stereo-active lone pairs, respectively. This gives rise to distinctive local lattice distortions and low-frequency vibrational modes. We find that the e-ph interaction leads to a blue shift of the band gap as temperature increases in the structure with the dynamic stereo-active lone pair but to a red shift in the structure with the static stereo-active lone pair. Furthermore, analyses of the temperature-dependent low-energy photoluminescence tails reveal that the strength of the e-ph interaction increases with increasing lone-pair activity, leading to a transition from a large polaron to a small polaron, which has significant influence on the emission spectra and charge carrier dynamics. Our results highlight the role of the lone-pair activity in controlling the band gap, phonon, and polaronic effect in LHPs and provide guidelines for optimizing the optoelectronic properties, especially for tin-based and germanium-based halide perovskites, where stereo-active lone pairs are more prominent than their lead counterparts.

Interfacial electronic properties of metal/CsSnBr3heterojunctions

All-inorganic lead-free perovskite CsSnBr₃, has been proved good stability and optoelectronic properties in theory and experiment. However, the interfacial electronic properties of metal/CsSnBr₃are still unclear in electronic devices. Herein, we systematically investigate the interfacial properties of metal electrodes (Al, Ag and Au) and CsSnBr₃with different atomic terminals (SnBr₂-T and CsBr-T) through the first-principles calculation. SnBr₂-T and CsBr-T have various contact types and Schottky barriers due to their different interaction strengths with metals. In particular, the moderate interlayer coupling strength with Al leads to the ultra-low Schottky barrier and tunneling barrier, which makes Al possess the best contact performance among the studied metals. Furthermore, the external electric field can be effective in regulating the Schottky barrier and realizing the Ohmic contact. These findings provide useful guidance for the design of perovskite-based nanoelectronic devices with high performance.

Insights into Low Thermal Conductivity in Inorganic Materials for Thermoelectrics

Efficient manipulation of thermal conductivity and fundamental understanding of the microscopic mechanisms of phonon scattering in crystalline solids are crucial to achieve high thermoelectric performance. Thermoelectric energy conversion directly and reversibly converts between heat and electricity and is a promising renewable technology to generate electricity by recovering waste heat and improve solid-state refrigeration. However, a unique challenge in thermal transport needs to be addressed to achieve high thermoelectric performance: the requirement of crystalline materials with ultralow lattice thermal conductivity (κ_L). A plethora of strategies have been developed to lower κ_L in crystalline solids by means of nanostructural modifications, introduction of intrinsic or extrinsic phonon scattering centers with tailored shape and dimension, and manipulation of defects and disorder. Recently, intrinsic local lattice distortion and lattice anharmonicity originating from various mechanisms such as rattling, bonding heterogeneity, and ferroelectric instability have found popularity. In this Perspective, we outline the role of manipulation of chemical bonding and structural chemistry on thermal transport in various high-performance thermoelectric materials. We first briefly outline the fundamental aspects of κ_L and discuss the current status of the popular phonon scattering mechanisms in brief. Then we discuss emerging new ideas with examples of crystal structure and lattice dynamics in exemplary materials. Finally, we present an outlook for focus areas of experimental and theoretical challenges, possible new directions, and integrations of novel techniques to achieve low κ_L in order to realize high-performance thermoelectric materials.

Hidden Local Symmetry Breaking in Silver Diamondoid Compounds is Root Cause of Ultralow Thermal Conductivity

Typically, conventional structure transitions occur from a low symmetry state to a higher symmetry state upon warming. In this work, an unexpected local symmetry breaking in the tetragonal diamondoid compound AgGaTe₂ is reported, which, upon warming, evolves continuously from an undistorted ground state to a locally distorted state while retaining average crystallographic symmetry. This is a rare phenomenon previously referred to as emphanisis. This distorted state, caused by the weak sd³ orbital hybridization of tetrahedral Ag atoms, causes their displacement off the tetrahedron center and promotes a global distortion of the crystal structure resulting in strong acoustic-optical phonon scattering and an ultralow lattice thermal conductivity of 0.26 W m^-1 K^-1 at 850 K in AgGaTe₂ . The findings explain the underlying reason for the unexpectedly low thermal conductivities of silver-based compounds compared to copper-based analogs and provide a guideline to suppressing heat transport in diamondoid and other materials.

Pressure-Enhanced Photocurrent in One-Dimensional SbSI via Lone-Pair Electron Reconfiguration

Understanding the relationships between the local structures and physical properties of low-dimensional ferroelectrics is of both fundamental and practical importance. Here, pressure-induced enhancement in the photocurrent of SbSI is observed by using pressure to regulate the lone-pair electrons (LPEs). The reconfiguration of LPEs under pressure leads to the inversion symmetry broken in the crystal structure and an optimum bandgap according to the Shockley–Queisser limit. The increased polarization caused by the stereochemical expression of LPEs results in a significantly enhanced photocurrent at 14 GPa. Our research enriches the foundational understanding of structure–property relationships by regulating the stereochemical role of LPEs and offers a distinctive approach to the design of ferroelectric-photovoltaic materials.

Strategies and Considerations for Least-Squares Analysis of Total Scattering Data

The process of least-squares analysis has been applied for decades in the field of crystallography. Here, we discuss the application of this process to total scattering data, primarily in the combination of least-squares Rietveld refinements and fitting of the atomic pair distribution function (PDF). While these two approaches use the same framework, the interpretation of results from least-squares fitting of PDF data should be done with caution through carefully constructed analysis approaches. We provide strategies and considerations for applying least-squares analysis to total scattering data, combining both crystallographic Rietveld and fitting of PDF data, given in context with recent examples from the literature. This perspective is aimed to be an accessible document for those new to the total scattering approach, as well as a reflective framework for the total scattering expert.

Chemistry, Structure, and Function of Lone Pairs in Extended Solids

ConspectusThe lone pair has been a known feature of the electronic structure of molecules for over 100 years. Beginning with the pioneering work of Lewis and others that was later developed into useful guidelines for predicting molecular structure, lone pairs and their steric consequences are now taught at the very earliest stages of a chemistry education. In the crystalline solid state, lone pairs have perhaps had a less visible yet equally consequential role, with a significant impact on a range of properties and functionalities. Important properties associated with s² electron-derived lone pairs include their role in creating conditions favorable for ion transport, in the formation and correlation of local dipoles and the resulting polar behavior leading to ferroics and multiferroics, in increasing the refractive index of glass, in reducing the thermal conductivity of thermoelectric materials, and in breaking local symmetry permitting second-harmonic light generation.. In recent years, the role of the lone pair in developing the electronic structure of some topological quantum materials has also been recognized. While structural distortions due to lone pairs have traditionally been characterized through their crystallography, recent advances in scattering and spectroscopy have revealed the presence of local lone pair-driven distortions that do not correlate over long length scales. The role of these crystallographically "hidden" lone pairs, their detection, and their impact on properties have become a growing body of work in the literature. Hidden lone pairs are an effective argument for considering a role for lone pairs that goes beyond their being objects that occupy space in the coordination polyhedra of cations. This Account introduces the chemistry of lone pairs in extended crystalline solids, including a discussion of when they are stereochemically active, how they manifest in the structure, and how their chemistry can be tuned by the chemical environment around them. Eventually, all of these factors work in unison to help develop and tune properties of interest. Certain specific examples of structure-property relationships in materials that are driven by lone pair behavior are described here, including the potential impact of lone pairs on the optical and electronic properties of hybrid halide perovskite compounds that are relevant to their photovoltaic applications. We highlight the role of lone pairs in the dielectric behavior of geometrically frustrated pyrochlores, the temperature-dependent optoelectronic behavior of halide perovskites, the polar phase transitions in lead-free ferroelectric perovskites, and the compositional insulator-to-metal transition in ruthenium pyrochlores. The theme underpinning this Account is that the lone pair can be considered to be a powerful design element for a broad range of material function.

Diverging Expressions of Anharmonicity in Halide Perovskites

Lead-based halide perovskite crystals are shown to have strongly anharmonic structural dynamics. This behavior is important because it may be the origin of their exceptional photovoltaic properties. The double perovskite, Cs₂ AgBiBr₆ , has been recently studied as a lead-free alternative for optoelectronic applications. However, it does not exhibit the excellent photovoltaic activity of the lead-based halide perovskites. Therefore, to explore the correlation between the anharmonic structural dynamics and optoelectronic properties in lead-based halide perovskites, the structural dynamics of Cs₂ AgBiBr₆ are investigated and are compared to its lead-based analog, CsPbBr₃ . Using temperature-dependent Raman measurements, it is found that both materials are indeed strongly anharmonic. Nonetheless, the expression of their anharmonic behavior is markedly different. Cs₂ AgBiBr₆ has well-defined normal modes throughout the measured temperature range, while CsPbBr₃ exhibits a complete breakdown of the normal-mode picture above 200 K. It is suggested that the breakdown of the normal-mode picture implies that the average crystal structure may not be a proper starting point to understand the electronic properties of the crystal. In addition to our main findings, an unreported phase of Cs₂ AgBiBr₆ is also discovered below ≈37 K.

Stabilization of Metastable Halide Perovskite Lattices in the 2D Limit

Metal halide perovskites constitute a new class of semiconductors that are structurally tailorable, exhibiting rich structural polymorphs. In this perspective, the polymorphism in lead halide perovskites is described-a material system currently used for high-performance photovoltaics and optoelectronics. Strategies for stabilizing the metastable perovskite polymorphs based on crystal size reduction and surface functionalization are critically reviewed. Focus is on an unprecedented stabilization of metastable perovskite lattices in the 2D limit (e.g., with a thickness down to a few unit cells) due to the dominance of surface effects. This stabilization allows the incorporation of various A-cations that deemed oversized for 3D perovskites into the 2D perovskite lattices, which bring new insights on the relationships between the crystal structures and optoelectronic properties and lead to emergent ferroelectricity in halide perovskites. A comprehensive understanding is provided on how the A-cations influence the structural, optoelectronic, and ferroelectric properties, with an emphasis on the second order Jahn-Teller distortion caused by the oversized A-cations. Finally, future perspectives on new structure exploration and studies of fundamental photophysical properties using stabilized perovskite lattices are provided.

Large scale dataset of real space electronic charge density of cubic inorganic materials from density functional theory (DFT) calculations

Driven by the big data science, material informatics has attracted enormous research interests recently along with many recognized achievements. To acquire knowledge of materials by previous experience, both feature descriptors and databases are essential for training machine learning (ML) models with high accuracy. In this regard, the electronic charge density ρ(r), which in principle determines the properties of materials at their ground state, can be considered as one of the most appropriate descriptors. However, the systematic electronic charge density ρ(r) database of inorganic materials is still in its infancy due to the difficulties in collecting raw data in experiment and the expensive first-principles based computational cost in theory. Herein, a real space electronic charge density ρ(r) database of 17,418 cubic inorganic materials is constructed by performing high-throughput density functional theory calculations. The displayed ρ(r) patterns show good agreements with those reported in previous studies, which validates our computations. Further statistical analysis reveals that it possesses abundant and diverse data, which could accelerate ρ(r) related machine learning studies. Moreover, the electronic charge density database will also assists chemical bonding identifications and promotes new crystal discovery in experiments.

Tin Halide Perovskites: From Fundamental Properties to Solar Cells

Metal halide perovskites have unique optical and electrical properties, which make them an excellent class of materials for a broad spectrum of optoelectronic applications. However, it is with photovoltaic devices that this class of materials has reached the apotheosis of popularity. High power conversion efficiencies are achieved with lead-based compounds, which are toxic to the environment. Tin-based perovskites are the most promising alternative because of their bandgap close to the optimal value for photovoltaic applications, the strong optical absorption, and good charge carrier mobilities. Nevertheless, the low defect tolerance, the fast crystallization, and the oxidative instability of tin halide perovskites currently limit their efficiency. The aim of this review is to give a detailed overview of the crystallographic, photophysical, and optoelectronic properties of tin-based perovskite compounds in their multiple forms from 3D to low-dimensional structures. At the end, recent progress in tin-based perovskite solar cells are reviewed, mainly focusing on the detail of the strategies adopted to improve the device performances. For each subtopic, the current challenges and the outlook are discussed, with the aim to stimulate the community to address the most important issues in a concerted manner.

One- and Two-Photon Excited Photoluminescence and Suppression of Thermal Quenching of CsSnBr3 Microsquare and Micropyramid

Thermal photoluminescence (PL) quenching is fundamentally important for perovskite optoelectronic applications. Herein, we investigated PL characteristics of CsSnBr₃ microsquares and micropyramids synthesized by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and their PL quenching behavior at high temperature. These microstructures have favorable PL performances in ambient atmosphere. Under two-photon excitation, we observed whispering gallery modes (WGMs) in microsquares and amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) in micropyramids. Reversible PL losses due to thermal effect were observed for both samples. Monotonic blue shifts in PL emission upon temperature increase suggest a band gap widening associated with an emphanisis effect. Temperature-dependent spectral line width analysis reveals that a line width broadening is attributed to the dominant electron-longitudinal optical phonon interaction. The estimated activation energy of thermally assisted nonradiative recombination for CsSnBr₃ microsquares and micropyramids is over 310 meV by the Arrhenius equation, which is higher than CsPbBr₃. These results prove that CsSnBr₃ exhibits better thermal stability than Pb-based perovskites.
