Energetics and Redox Kinetics of Pure Ferrocene-Terminated N-Heterocyclic Carbene Self-Assembled Monolayers on Gold

N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on gold have received considerable attention, but little is known about the lateral interactions between neighboring NHC molecules, their stability when subjected to aggressive oxidizing/reducing conditions, and their interactions with solution ions, all of which are essential for their use in a wide range of applications. To address these deficiencies, we present a comprehensive investigation of two different ferrocene (Fc)-terminated NHC SAMs with different chain lengths and linking groups. Pure monolayers of Fc-terminated NHCs display only a single, symmetrical pair of redox peaks, implying the formation of a homogeneous SAM structure with uniformly distributed Fc/Fc+ redox centers. By comparison, pure Fc-alkylthiol SAMs exhibit complex and impractical redox chemistry and require surface dilution in order to achieve reproducible properties. The NHC SAMs examined in this study exhibit very fast Fc redox kinetics and comparable or even superior stability against the application of multiple potential cycles or long-time holding at constant potential compared to alkylthiol SAMs. Furthermore, ion pairing of Fc+ and hydrophobic perchlorate and other hydrophilic anions is observed with Fc-NHC SAMs, highlighting conditions favorable for future applications of these monolayers. This study should therefore shed light on the very promising characteristics of redox-active NHC SAMs as an alternative to traditional Fc-alkylthiol SAMs for multiple practical applications, including in sensors and electrocatalysis.

Theory and simulations of light-induced self-assembly in colloids with quantum chemistry derived empirical potentials

Light-induced self-assembly (LISA) is a non-invasive method for tuning material properties. Photoresponsive ligands coated on the surfaces of nanoparticles are often used to achieve LISA. We report simulation studies for a photoresponsive ligand, azobenzene dithiol (ADT), which switches from a trans-to-cis configuration on exposure to ultraviolet light, allowing self-assembly in ADT-coated gold nanoparticles (NPs). This is attributed to a higher dipole moment of cis-ADT over trans-ADT which leads to a dipole-dipole attraction facilitating self-assembly. Singh and Jha [Comput. Theor. Chem., 2021, 1206, 113492] used quantum-chemistry calculations to quantify the interaction energy of a pair of ADT ligands in their cis and trans conformations. The interaction energy between ligands was fit to a potential energy function of the Lennard-Jones (LJ) form having distinct exponents for attractive and repulsive contributions. Using this generalized equation for the ligand-ligand interaction energy, we calculated the total effective interaction energy between a pair of cis as well as trans ADT-coated NPs. Specifically, we calculated the effective interaction energies between cis/trans-NPs using discrete as well as continuous approaches. Given the limitations of experiments in probing individual ligand conformations, we also studied the effect of varying the functional ligand length on the interaction energy between NPs and identified the optimal functional ligand length to capture the steric and conformational effects. Finally, using the effective interaction energy, we obtained a generalized potential energy function, which was applied in Langevin dynamics simulations to capture self-assembly in NPs.

O/S Exchange Reaction in Synthesizing Sulfur-Containing Polymers

Using carbon disulfide (CS2) and carbonyl sulfide (COS) as sulfur-containing and one-carbon feedstocks to make value-added products is paramount for both pure and applied chemistry and environmental science. One of the practical strategies is to copolymerize these bulk chemicals with epoxides to produce sulfur-containing polymers. This approach contributes to improving the sustainability of polymer manufacturing, provides highly desired functional polymer materials, and has attracted much attention. However, these copolymerizations invariably exhibit the intensely complicated chemistry of O/S exchange reaction, leading to sulfur-containing polymers with diverse architectures. As the understanding of O/S exchange continues to deepen, recent efforts have guided significant advances in the synthesis of CS2- and COS-based polymers. This review examines the O/S exchange chemistry and summarizes the recent progress in this field to promote the further advance of synthesizing sulfur-containing polymers from CS2 and COS.

Chiral Inversion of Au40(SR)24 Nanocluster Driven by Rotation of Gold Tetrahedra in the Kekulé-like Core

Studying the chiral characteristics and chiral inversion mechanisms of gold nanoclusters is important to promote their applications in the field of chiral catalysis and chiral recognition. Herein, we investigated the chiral inversion process of the Au40(SR)24 nanocluster and its derivatives using density functional theory calculations. The results showed that the chiral inversion process can be achieved by rotation of tetrahedra units in the gold core without breaking the Au-S bond. This work found that Au40 nanoclusters protected by different ligands have different chiral inversion mechanisms, and the difference is mainly attributable to the steric effects of the ligands. Moreover, the chiral inversion of the derivative clusters (Au34, Au28, and Au22) of the Au40 nanocluster can also be accomplished by the rotation of the Au4 tetrahedra units in the gold core. The energy barrier in the chiral inversion process of gold nanoclusters increases with the decrease of Au4 tetrahedra units in the gold core. This work identifies a chiral inversion mechanism with lower reaction energy barriers and provided a theoretical basis for the study of gold nanocluster chirality.

Orchestration of ferro- and anti-ferromagnetic ordering in gold nanoclusters

The unpaired electron in the gold clusters (Aun, n = no. of Au atoms) with an odd number of total electrons is solely responsible for the magnetic properties in the small-sized Au nano-clusters. However, no such unpaired electron is available due to pairing in the even number of atom gold clusters and behaving as a diamagnetic entity similar to bulk gold. In this work, we unveiled the spin-density distribution of odd Aun clusters with n = 1 to 19 that reveals that a single unpaired electron gets distributed non-uniformly among all Au-atoms depending on the cluster size and morphology. The delocalization of the unpaired electron leads to the spin dilution approaching a value of ∼1/n spin moments on each atom for the higher clusters. Interestingly, small odd-numbered gold clusters possess spin-magnetic moments similar to the delocalized spin moments as of organic radicals. Can cooperative magnetic properties be obtained by coupling these individual magnetic gold nanoparticles? In this work, by applying state-of-the-art computational methodologies, we have demonstrated ferromagnetic or anti-ferromagnetic couplings between such magnetic nanoclusters upon designing suitable organic spacers. These findings will open up a new avenue of nanoscale magnetic materials combining organic spacers and odd-electron nano-clusters.

Interfacial Stereoelectronic Effect Induced by Anchoring Orientation

Heterogeneous interfaces in most devices play a key role in the material performance. Exploring the atomic structure and electronic properties of metal-molecule interfaces is critical for various potential applications, such as surface sensing, molecular recognition, and molecular electronic devices. This study unveils a ubiquitous interfacial stereoelectronic effect in conjugated molecular junctions by combining first-principles simulation and scanning tunneling microscopy break junction technology. Single-molecule junctions with same-side interfacial anchoring (cis configuration) exhibit higher conductance than those with opposite-side interfacial anchoring (trans configuration). The cis and trans configurations can undergo reversible conversions, resulting in a conductance switching. The stability of these configurations can be adjusted by an electric field, achieving precise regulation of conductance states. Our findings provide important insights for designing high-quality materials and enhancing the device performance.

Dual-Mode Virus Detection: Combining Electrochemical and Fluorescence Modalities for Enhanced Sensitivity and Reliability

This study introduces a dual-mode biosensor specifically designed for the quantitative detection of viruses in rapid analysis. The biosensor is unique in its use of both optical (fluorescence) and electrochemical (impedance) detection methods using the same nanocomposites, providing a dual confirmation system for virus (norovirus-like particles) quantification. The system is based on using two antibody-conjugated nanocomposites: CdSeS quantum dots and Au-N,S-GQD nanocomposites. For optical detection, the principle relies on the fluorescence quenching of CdSeS by Au-N,S-GQD in a sandwich structure with the target. Conversely, electrochemical detection is based on the change in impedance caused by the formation of the same sandwich structure. The biosensor demonstrated exceptional sensitivity, capable of detecting norovirus at concentrations of as low as femtomolar in the electrochemical method and picomolar in the optical method. In the dual-responsive concentration range from 10-13 to 10-10 M, the sensor is highly sensitive in both methods, creating significant changes in fluorescence intensity and impedance in the presence of virus. Furthermore, the biosensor exhibits a high degree of specificity, with a negligible response to nontarget proteins, even within complex test solutions. This work represents a significant advancement in the field of biosensor technology, offering a fast, accurate, and reliable method for diagnosing viral infections and diseases.

Nanoarchitectonics of molecular self assembled monolayers by transition metal ion intercalation for enhancement of molecular junction conductivity

This research delves into the role of metal ions in enhancing the electronic properties of 5,5'-bis(mercaptomethyl)-2,2'-bipyridine (BPD) self-assembled monolayers (SAMs). It combines experimental techniques and numerical simulations to understand the impact of these ions on the structural, electronic, and transport properties of BPD SAMs. Key findings include the varied bonding preferences of metal ions and their significant role in modifying the electronic structure of BPD molecules, leading to enhanced electron delocalization and migration. The study highlights the potential of metal ions in advancing molecular electronics, particularly in the development of high-performance electronic and energy devices.

Highly Stable Carboranyl Ligated Gold Nano-Catalysts for Regioselective Aromatic Bromination

Achieving electronic/steric control and realizing selectivity regulation in nanocatalysis remains a formidable challenge, as the dynamic nature of metal-ligand interfaces, including dissolution (metal leaching) and structural reconstruction, poses significant obstacles. Herein, we disclose carboranyls (CBs) as unprecedented carbon-bonded functional ligands (Eads.CB-Au(111)=-2.90 eV) for gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), showcasing their exceptional stabilization capability that is attributed by strong Au-C bonds combined with B-H⋅⋅⋅Au interactions. The synthesized CB@AuNPs exhibit core(Aun)-satellite(CB2Au-) structure, showing high stability towards multiple stimuli (110 °C, pH=1-12, thiol etchants). In addition, different from conventional AuNP catalysts such as triphenylphosphine (PPh3) stabilized AuNPs, dissolution of catalytically active gold species was suppressed in CB@AuNPs under the reaction conditions. Leveraging these distinct features, CB@AuNPs realized outstanding p : o selectivities in aromatic bromination. Unbiased arenes including chlorobenzene (up to >30 : 1), bromobenzene (15 : 1) and phenyl acrylate were examined using CB@AuNPs as catalysts to afford highly-selective p-products. Both carboranyl ligands and carboranyl derived counterions are crucial for such regioselective transformation. This work has provided valuable insights for AuNPs in realizing diverse regioselective transformations.

Circular dichroism and circularly polarized luminescence of ligand-protected molecular metal clusters: insights into structure-chiroptical property relationships

Molecular noble metal clusters are an emerging class of circularly polarized luminescent (CPL) nanomaterials. Many of the ligand-protected metal clusters exhibit discrete electronic absorption bands, which are assigned to their structural components such as metal core, ligands and metal-ligand interfaces. This implies the suitability of the chiroptical spectroscopic approach to unravel the structure-chiroptical property relationships in molecular metal clusters. Due to the tremendous developments in computational methods for investigating chiroptical properties, along with circular dichroism (CD) and CPL spectroscopy, understanding of the structure-chiroptical properties of these clusters is rapidly progressing. This review discusses various strategies such as the use of chiral ligands, metal atom substitution, ligand exchange, co-crystallization with chiral ligands, etc., for inducing and enhancing the CPL of such metal clusters. This review demonstrates the potential of combined CD-CPL spectroscopic investigations and theoretical calculations to unravel the origins of photoluminescence and CPL activity of chiral metal clusters.

Molecular beam epitaxy and other large-scale methods for producing monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides

Transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD/TMDC) monolayers have gained considerable attention in recent years for their unique properties. Some of these properties include direct bandgap emission and strong mechanical and electronic properties. For these reasons, monolayer TMDs have been considered a promising material for next-generation quantum technologies and optoelectronic devices. However, for the field to make more gainful advancements and be implemented in devices, high-quality TMD monolayers need to be produced at a larger scale with high quality. In this article, some of the current means to produce larger-scale semiconducting monolayer TMDs will be reviewed. An emphasis will be given to the technique of molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) for two main reasons: (1) there is a growing body of research using this technique to grow TMD monolayers and (2) there is yet to be a body of work that has summarized the current research for MBE monolayer growth of TMDs.

Possibilities and limitations of solution-state NMR spectroscopy to analyze the ligand shell of ultrasmall metal nanoparticles

Ultrasmall nanoparticles have a diameter between 1 and 3 nm at the border between nanoparticles and large molecules. Usually, their core consists of a metal, and the shell of a capping ligand with sulfur or phosphorus as binding atoms. While the core structure can be probed by electron microscopy, electron and powder diffraction, and single-crystal structure analysis for atom-sharp clusters, it is more difficult to analyze the ligand shell. In contrast to larger nanoparticles, ultrasmall nanoparticles cause only a moderate distortion of the NMR signal, making NMR spectroscopy a qualitative as well as a quantitative probe to assess the nature of the ligand shell. The application of isotope-labelled ligands and of two-dimensional NMR techniques can give deeper insight into ligand-nanoparticle interactions. Applications of one- and two-dimensional NMR spectroscopy to analyze ultrasmall nanoparticles are presented with suitable examples, including a critical discussion of the limitations of NMR spectroscopy on nanoparticles.

Paper/GO/e-Au flexible SERS sensors for in situ detection of tricyclazole in orange juice and on cucumber skin at the sub-ppb level: machine learning-assisted data analysis

Despite being an excellent surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) active material, gold nanoparticles were difficult to be loaded onto the surface of filter paper to fabricate flexible SERS substrates. In this study, electrochemically synthesized gold nanoparticles (e-AuNPs) were deposited on graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets in solution by ultrasonication, resulting in the formation of a GO/Au hybrid material. Thanks to the support of GO, the hybrid material could adhere onto the surface of filter paper, which was immersed into a GO/Au solution for 24 h and dried naturally at room temperature. The paper-based materials were then employed as substrates for a surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensing platform to detect tricyclazole (TCZ), a widely used pesticide, resulting in better sensitivity compared to the use of paper/Au SERS sensors. With the most optimal GO content of 4%, paper/GO/Au SERS sensors could achieve a limit of detection of 1.32 × 10-10 M in standard solutions. Furthermore, the filter paper-based SERS sensors also exhibited significant advantages in sample collection in real samples. On one hand, the sensors were dipped into orange juice, allowing TCZ molecules in this real sample to be adsorbed onto their SERS active surface. On the other hand, they were pasted onto cucumber skin to collect the analytes. As a result, the paper/GO/Au SERS sensors could sense TCZ in orange juice and on cucumber skin at concentrations as low as 10-9 M (∼2 ppb). In addition, a machine learning model was designed and developed, allowing the sensing system to discriminate TCZ from nine other organic compounds and predict the presence of TCZ on cucumber skin at concentrations down to 10-9 M.

Structure Effects of Ligands in Gold-Ligand Complexes for Controlled Formation of Gold Nanoclusters

Metal nanoclusters (NCs) are a special class of nanoparticles composed of a precise number of metal atoms and ligands. Because the proportion of ligands to metal atoms is high in metal NCs, the ligand type determines the physical properties of metal NCs. Furthermore, ligands presumably govern the entire formation process of the metal NCs. However, their roles in the synthesis, especially as factors in the uniformity of metal NCs, are not understood. It is because the synthetic procedure of metal NCs is highly convoluted. The synthesis is initiated by the formation of various metal-ligand complexes, which have different numbers of atoms and ligands, resulting in different coordinations of metal. Moreover, these complexes, as actual precursors to metal NCs, undergo sequential transformations into a series of intermediate NCs before the formation of the desired NCs. Thus, to resolve the complicated synthesis of metal NCs and achieve their uniformity, it is important to investigate the reactivity of the complexes. Herein, we utilize a combination of mass spectrometry, density functional theory, and electrochemical measurements to understand the ligand effects on the reactivity of AuI-thiolate complexes toward the reductive formation of Au NCs. We discover that the stability of the complexes can be increased by either van der Waals interactions induced by the long carbon chain of ligands or by non-thiol functional groups in the ligands, which additionally coordinate with AuI in the complexes. Such structural effects of thiol ligands determine the reduction reactivity of the complexes and the amount of NaBH4 required for the controlled synthesis of the Au NCs.

Pt-Decorated Gold Nanoflares for High-Fidelity Phototheranostics: Reducing Side-Effects and Enhancing Cytotoxicity toward Target Cells

Functionalized with the Au-S bond, gold nanoflares have emerged as promising candidates for theranostics. However, the presence of intracellular abundantly biothiols compromises the conventional Au-S bond, leading to the unintended release of cargoes and associated side-effects on non-target cells. Additionally, the hypoxic microenvironment in diseased regions limits treatment efficacy, especially in photodynamic therapy. To address these challenges, high-fidelity photodynamic nanoflares constructed on Pt-coated gold nanoparticles (Au@Pt PDNF) were communicated to avoid false-positive therapeutic signals and side-effects caused by biothiol perturbation. Compared with conventional photodynamic gold nanoflares (AuNP PDNF), the Au@Pt PDNF were selectively activated by cancer biomarkers and exhibited high-fidelity phototheranostics while reducing side-effects. Furthermore, the ultrathin Pt-shell catalysis was confirmed to generate oxygen which alleviated hypoxia-related photodynamic resistance and enhanced the antitumor effect. This design might open a new venue to advance theranostics performance and is adaptable to other theranostic nanomaterials by simply adding a Pt shell.

The Molecular Footprint of Peptides on the Surface of Ultrasmall Gold Nanoparticles (2 nm) Is Governed by Steric Demand

Ultrasmall gold nanoparticles were functionalized with peptides of two to seven amino acids that contained one cysteine molecule as anchor via a thiol-gold bond and a number of alanine residues as nonbinding amino acid. The cysteine was located either in the center of the molecule or at the end (C-terminus). For comparison, gold nanoparticles were also functionalized with cysteine alone. The particles were characterized by UV spectroscopy, differential centrifugal sedimentation (DCS), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). This confirmed the uniform metal core (2 nm diameter). The hydrodynamic diameter was probed by 1H-DOSY NMR spectroscopy and showed an increase in thickness of the hydrated peptide layer with increasing peptide size (up to 1.4 nm for heptapeptides; 0.20 nm per amino acid in the peptide). 1H NMR spectroscopy of water-dispersed nanoparticles showed the integrity of the peptides and the effect of the metal core on the peptide. Notably, the NMR signals were very broad near the metal surface and became increasingly narrow in a distance. In particular, the methyl groups of alanine can be used as probe for the resolution of the NMR spectra. The number of peptide ligands on each nanoparticle was determined using quantitative 1H NMR spectroscopy. It decreased with increasing peptide length from about 100 for a dipeptide to about 12 for a heptapeptide, resulting in an increase of the molecular footprint from about 0.1 to 1.1 nm2.

Alkaline Earth Metal Superatom of W@Si16: Characterization of Group 6 Metal Encapsulating Si16 Cage on Organic Substrates

Transition metal atom (M)-encapsulating silicon cage nanoclusters (M@Si16) exhibit a superatomic nature, depending on the central M atom owing to the number of valence electrons and charge state on organic substrates. Since M@Si16 superatom featuring group 4 and 5 transition metal atoms exhibit rare-gas-like and alkali-like characteristics, respectively, group 6 transition metal atoms are expected to show alkaline earth-like behavior. In this study, M@Si16, comprising a central atom from group 6 (MVI = Cr, Mo, and W) were deposited on C60 substrates, and their electronic and chemical stabilities were investigated in terms of their charge state and chemical reactivity against oxygen exposures. In comparison to alkali-like Ta@Si16, the extent of charge transfer to the C60 substrate is approximately doubled, while the oxidative reactivity is subdued for MVI@Si16 on C60, especially for W@Si16. The results show that a divalent state of MVI@Si162+ appears on the C60 substrate, which is consistently calculated to be a symmetrical cage structure of W@Si162+ in C3v, revealing insights into the "periodic law" of M@Si16 superatoms pertaining to the characteristics of alkaline earth metals.

Monodisperse Ag, Au Nanoparticles via Solvated Metal Atom Dispersion and Digestive Ripening in Ionic Liquid

Digestive ripening (DR) is a postsynthetic protocol for the transformation of a colloid consisting of polydisperse metal nanoparticles (NPs) into a colloid composed of nearly monodisperse metal nanoparticles. This process is brought about by the digestive ripening agent, typically an organic ligand with a long alkyl chain at one end and a functional group at the other, at the boiling point of the solvent in which it is carried out, requiring long periods of time. In this work, digestive ripening of polydisperse Ag and Au nanoparticles brought about by ionic liquids (ILs) under very mild conditions (∼273 K, ∼30 min) to obtain nearly monodisperse nanoparticles has been demonstrated. Herein, the ionic liquid plays a dual role, as a digestive ripening and a stabilizing agent for the nanoparticles. Ionic liquid-assisted digestive ripening under such mild temperatures and short period of time has hitherto not been reported.

Chemistry of the Au-Thiol Interface through the Lens of Single-Molecule Flicker Noise Measurements

Chemistry of the Au-S interface at the nanoscale is one of the most complex systems to study, as the nature and strength of the Au-S bond change under different experimental conditions. In this study, using mechanically controlled break junction technique, we probed the conductance and analyzed Flicker noise for several aliphatic and aromatic thiol derivatives and thioethers. We demonstrate that Flicker noise can be used to unambiguously differentiate between stronger chemisorption (Au-SR) and weaker physisorption (Au-SRR') type interactions. The Flicker noise measurements indicate that the gold rearrangement in chemisorbed Au-SR junctions resembles that of the Au rearrangement in pure Au-Au metal contact breaking, which is independent of the molecular backbone structure and the resulting conductance. In contrast, thioethers showed the formation of a weaker physisorbed Au-SRR' type bond, and the Flicker noise measurement indicates the changes in the Au-anchoring group interface but not the Au-Au rearrangement like that in the Au-SR case. Additionally, by employing single-molecular conductance and Flicker noise analysis, we have probed the interfacial electric field-catalyzed ring-opening reaction of cyclic thioether under mild environmental conditions, which otherwise requires harsh chemical conditions for cleavage of the C-S bond. All of our conductance measurements are complemented by NEGF transport calculations. This study illustrates that the single-molecule conductance, together with the Flicker noise measurements can be used to tune and monitor chemical reactions at the single-molecule level.

Unveiling the Properties of Sulfhydryl Groups in a Single-Molecule Junction

The metal-thiol interface is ubiquitous in nanotechnology and surface chemistry. It is not only used to construct nanocomposites but also plays a decisive role in the properties of these materials. When organothiol molecules bind to the gold surface, there is still controversy over whether sulfhydryl groups can form disulfide bonds and whether these disulfide bonds can remain stable on the gold surface. Here, we investigate the intrinsic properties of sulfhydryl groups on the gold surface at the single-molecule level using a scanning tunneling microscope break junction technique. Our findings indicate that sulfhydryl groups can react with each other to form disulfide bonds on the gold surface, and the electric field can promote the sulfhydryl coupling reaction. In addition to these findings, ultraviolet irradiation is used to effectively regulate the coupling between sulfhydryl groups, leading to the formation and cleavage of disulfide bonds. These results unveil the intrinsic properties of sulfhydryl groups on the gold surface, therefore facilitating the accurate construction of broad nanocomposites with the desired functionalities.

Critical Issues on the Surface Functionalization of Plasmonic Au-Ag/TiO2 Thin Films with Thiolated Oligonucleotide-Based Biorecognition Elements

This work reports on the surface functionalization of a nanomaterial supporting localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs) with (synthetic) thiolated oligonucleotide-based biorecognition elements, envisaging the development of selective LSPR-based DNA biosensors. The LSPR thin-film transducers are composed of noble metal nanoparticles (NPs) embedded in a TiO2 dielectric matrix, produced cost-effectively and sustainably by magnetron sputtering. The study focused on the immobilization kinetics of thiolated oligonucleotide probes as biorecognition elements, followed by the evaluation of hybridization events with the target probe. The interaction between the thiolated oligonucleotide probe and the transducer's surface was assessed by monitoring the LSPR signal with successive additions of probe solution through a microfluidic device. The device was specifically designed and fabricated for this work and adapted to a high-resolution LSPR spectroscopy system with portable characteristics. Benefiting from the synergetic characteristics of Ag and Au in the form of bimetallic nanoparticles, the Au-Ag/TiO2 thin film proved to be more sensitive to thiolated oligonucleotide binding events. Despite the successful surface functionalization with the biorecognition element, the detection of complementary oligonucleotides revealed electrostatic repulsion and steric hindrance, which hindered hybridization with the target oligonucleotide. This study points to an effect that is still poorly described in the literature and affects the design of LSPR biosensors based on nanoplasmonic thin films.

Au9 nanocluster adsorption and agglomeration control through sulfur modification of mesoporous TiO2

In the present work phenyl phosphine-protected Au9 nanoclusters were deposited onto (3-mercaptopropyl) trimethoxysilane (MPTMS) modified and unmodified mesoporous screen printed TiO2. The removal of the cluster ligands by annealing was applied to enhance the interaction between Au cluster cores and semiconductor surfaces in the creation of efficient photocatalytic systems. The heat treatment could lead to undesired agglomeration of Au clusters, affecting their unique properties as size specific clusters. To address this challenge, the semiconductor surfaces were modified by MPTMS. Characterization techniques confirm the effectiveness of the modification processes, and XPS demonstrates that S functionalized MTiO2 is more efficient than MTiO2 in increasing Au9 NCs adsorption by a factor of 10 and preventing Au cluster agglomeration even after annealing. Overall, this work contributes valuable insights into photocatalytic systems through controlled modification of semiconductor surfaces and Au nanocluster deposition.

The Electron-Rich and Nucleophilic N-Heterocyclic Imines on Metal Surfaces: Binding Modes and Interfacial Charge Transfer

The strongly electron-donating N-heterocyclic imines (NHIs) have been employed as excellent surface anchors for the thermodynamic stabilization of electron-deficient species due to their enhanced nucleophilicity. However, the binding mode and interfacial property of these new ligands are still unclear, representing a bottleneck for advanced applications in surface functionalization and catalysis. Here, NHIs with different side groups have been rationally designed, synthesized, and analyzed on various metal surfaces (Cu, Ag). Our results reveal different binding modes depending on the molecular structure and metal surface. The molecular design enables us to achieve a flat-lying or upright configuration and even a transition between these two binding modes depending on the coverage and time. Importantly, the two binding modes exhibit different degrees of interfacial charge transfer between the molecule and the surface. This study provides essential microscopic insight into the NHI adsorption geometry and interfacial charge transfer for the optimization of heterogeneous catalysts in coordination chemistry.

Structural and Chemical Bonding Properties of AuS2H0/-: A Photoelectron Velocity-Map Imaging Spectroscopic and Theoretical Study

Mass-selected photoelectron velocity-map imaging spectroscopy was employed to investigate the geometrical and electronic properties of AuS2H-/0. The comprehensive comparison between the experiment and theoretical calculations establishes that the ground-state AuS2H- anion has a mixed-ligand structure [SAuSH]- with an unsymmetrical S-Au-S unit. Further chemical bonding analyses on AuS2H and comparison with the isoelectronic AuS2- suggest that the unique S-Au-S unit in these species features two three-center, three-electron π-bonding, and one three-center, two-electron σ-bonding. The isoelectronic replacement of the extra electron in AuS2- by the H atom can lead to σ bonding evolution from the electron-sharing bond to the dative bond. These findings are conducive to the fundamental understanding of the intrinsic stability of thiolate-protected gold nanoclusters and their delicate ligand design to achieve desirable properties.

Ligand-Mediated Magnetism-Conversion Nanoprobes for Activatable Ultra-High Field Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Ultra-high field (UHF) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has emerged as a focal point of interest in the field of cancer diagnosis. Despite the ability of current paramagnetic or superparamagnetic smart MRI contrast agents to selectively enhance tumor signals in low-field MRI, their effectiveness at UHF remains inadequate due to inherent magnetism. Here, we report a ligand-mediated magnetism-conversion nanoprobe (MCNP) composed of 3-mercaptopropionic acid ligand-coated silver-gadolinium bimetallic nanoparticles. The MCNP exhibits a pH-dependent magnetism conversion from ferromagnetism to diamagnetism, facilitating tunable nanomagnetism for pH-activatable UHF MRI. Under neutral pH, the thiolate (-S- ) ligands lead to short τ'm and increased magnetization of the MCNPs. Conversely, in the acidic tumor microenvironment, the thiolate ligands are protonated and transform into thiol (-SH) ligands, resulting in prolonged τ'm and decreased magnetization of the MCNP, thereby enhancing longitudinal relaxivity (r1) values at UHF MRI. Notably, under a 9 T MRI field, the pH-sensitive changes in Ag-S binding affinity of the MCNP lead to a remarkable (>10-fold) r1 increase in an acidic medium (pH 5.0). In vivo studies demonstrate the capability of MCNPs to amplify MRI signal of hepatic tumors, suggesting their potential as a next-generation UHF-tailored smart MRI contrast agent.

Extensive photochemical restructuring of molecule-metal surfaces under room light

The molecule-metal interface is of paramount importance for many devices and processes, and directly involved in photocatalysis, molecular electronics, nanophotonics, and molecular (bio-)sensing. Here the photostability of this interface is shown to be sensitive even to room light levels for specific molecules and metals. Optical spectroscopy is used to track photoinduced migration of gold atoms when functionalised with different thiolated molecules that form uniform monolayers on Au. Nucleation and growth of characteristic surface metal nanostructures is observed from the light-driven adatoms. By watching the spectral shifts of optical modes from nanoparticles used to precoat these surfaces, we identify processes involved in the photo-migration mechanism and the chemical groups that facilitate it. This photosensitivity of the molecule-metal interface highlights the significance of optically induced surface reconstruction. In some catalytic contexts this can enhance activity, especially utilising atomically dispersed gold. Conversely, in electronic device applications such reconstructions introduce problematic aging effects.

Covalently-Bonded Laminar Assembly of Van der Waals Semiconductors with Polymers: Toward High-Performance Flexible Devices

Van der Waals semiconductors (vdWS) offer superior mechanical and electrical properties and are promising for flexible microelectronics when combined with polymer substrates. However, the self-passivated vdWS surfaces and their weak adhesion to polymers tend to cause interfacial sliding and wrinkling, and thus, are still challenging the reliability of vdWS-based flexible devices. Here, an effective covalent vdWS-polymer lamination method with high stretch tolerance and excellent electronic performance is reported. Using molybdenum disulfide (MoS2 )and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) as a case study, gold-chalcogen bonding and mercapto silane bridges are leveraged. The resulting composite structures exhibit more uniform and stronger interfacial adhesion. This enhanced coupling also enables the observation of a theoretically predicted tension-induced band structure transition in MoS2 . Moreover, no obvious degradation in the devices' structural and electrical properties is identified after numerous mechanical cycle tests. This high-quality lamination enhances the reliability of vdWS-based flexible microelectronics, accelerating their practical applications in biomedical research and consumer electronics.

An Efficient Strategy for Constructing Fluorescent Nanoprobes for Prolonged and Accurate Tumor Imaging

Activatable near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent probes possess advantages of high selectivity, sensitivity, and deep imaging depth, holding great potential in the early diagnosis and prognosis assessment of tumors. However, small-molecule fluorescent probes are largely limited due to the rapid diffusion and metabolic clearance of activated fluorophores in vivo. Herein, we propose an efficient and reproducible novel strategy to construct activatable fluorescent nanoprobes through bioorthogonal reactions and the strong gold-sulfur (Au-S) interactions to achieve an enhanced permeability and retention (EPR) effect, thereby achieving prolonged and high-contrast tumor imaging in vivo. To demonstrate the merits of this strategy, we prepared an activatable nanoprobe, hCy-ALP@AuNP, for imaging alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity in vivo, whose nanoscale properties facilitate accumulation and long-term retention in tumor lesions. Tumor-overexpressed ALP significantly increased the fluorescence signal of hCy-ALP@AuNP in the NIR region. More importantly, compared with the small-molecule probe hCy-ALP-N3, the nanoprobe hCy-ALP@AuNP significantly improved the distribution and retention time in the tumor, thus improving the imaging window and accuracy. Therefore, this nanoprobe platform has great potential in the efficient construction of biomarker-responsive fluorescent nanoprobes to realize precise tumor diagnosis in vivo.

Ultra-stable and highly reactive colloidal gold nanoparticle catalysts protected using multi-dentate metal oxide nanoclusters

Owing to their remarkable properties, gold nanoparticles are applied in diverse fields, including catalysis, electronics, energy conversion and sensors. However, for catalytic applications of colloidal gold nanoparticles, the trade-off between their reactivity and stability is a significant concern. Here we report a universal approach for preparing stable and reactive colloidal small (~3 nm) gold nanoparticles by using multi-dentate polyoxometalates as protecting agents in non-polar solvents. These nanoparticles exhibit exceptional stability even under conditions of high concentration, long-term storage, heating and addition of bases. Moreover, they display excellent catalytic performance in various oxidation reactions of organic substrates using molecular oxygen as the sole oxidant. Our findings highlight the ability of inorganic multi-dentate ligands with structural stability and robust steric and electronic effects to confer stability and reactivity upon gold nanoparticles. This approach can be extended to prepare metal nanoparticles other than gold, enabling the design of novel nanomaterials with promising applications.

A review of aptamer-conjugated nanomaterials for analytical sample preparation: Classification according to the utilized nanomaterials

BACKGROUND

Sample extraction before detection is a critical step in analysis. Since targets of interest are often found in complex matrices, the sample can not be directly introduced to the analytical instrument. Nanomaterials with unique physical-chemical properties are excellent supports for use in sorbent-based extraction. However, they lack selectivity and thus need to be functionalized with target-capturing molecules. Antibodies and molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) can be used for this purpose, but they have some problems that limit their practical applications. Hence, functionalization of nanomaterials for selectivity remains a problem.

RESULTS

Nucleic acid aptamers are affinity reagents that can provide superiority to antibodies since they can be selected in vitro and at a lower cost. Moreover, aptamers can be chemically synthesized and easily modified with different functional groups. Hence, aptamers are good candidates to impart selectivity to the nanomaterials. Recent studies focus on the integration of aptamers with magnetic nanoparticles, carbon-based nanomaterials, metal-organic frameworks, gold nanoparticles, gold nanorods, silica nanomaterials, and nanofibers. The unique properties of nanomaterials and aptamers make the aptamer-conjugated nanomaterials attractive for use in sample preparation. Aptamer-functionalized nanomaterials have been successfully used for selective extraction of proteins, small molecules, and cells from different types of complex samples such as serum, urine, and milk. In particular, magnetic nanoparticles have a wider use due to the rapid extraction of the sample under magnetic field.

SIGNIFICANCE

In this review, we aim to emphasize how beneficial features of nanomaterials and aptamers could be combined for extraction or enrichment of the analytes from complex samples. We aim to highlight that the benefits are twofold in terms of selectivity and efficiency when employing nanomaterials and aptamers together as a single platform.

Ultrasensitive Detection of Matrix Metalloproteinase 2 Activity Using a Ratiometric Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Nanosensor with a Core-Satellite Structure

Matrix metalloproteinase 2 (MMP-2) has been considered a promising molecular biomarker for cancer diagnosis due to its related dysregulation. In this work, a core-satellite structure-powered ratiometric surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) nanosensor with high sensitivity and specificity to MMP-2 was developed. The SERS nanosensor was composed of a magnetic bead encapsulated within a 5,5'-dithiobis(2-nitrobenzoic acid) (DTNB)-labeled gold shell as the capture core and a 4-mercaptobenzonitrile (MBN)-encoded silver nanoparticle as the signal satellite, which were connected through a peptide substrate of MMP-2. MMP-2-triggered cleavage of peptides from the core surface resulted in a decrease of the SERS intensity of MBN. Since the SERS intensity of DTNB was used as an internal standard, the reliable and sensitive quantification of MMP-2 activity would be realized by the ratiometric SERS signal, with a limit of detection as low as 2.067 ng/mL and a dynamic range from 5 to 100 ng/mL. Importantly, the nanosensor enabled a precise determination of MMP-2 activity in tumor cell secretions, which may provide an avenue for early diagnosis and classification of malignant tumors.

Solvent-Mediated Modulation of the Au-S Bond in Dithiol Molecular Junctions

Gold-dithiol molecular junctions have been studied both experimentally and theoretically. However, the nature of the gold-thiolate bond as it relates to the solvent has seldom been investigated. It is known that solvents can impact the electronic structure of single-molecule junctions, but the correlation between the solvent and dithiol-linked single-molecule junction conductance is not well understood. We study molecular junctions formed with thiol-terminated phenylenes from both 1-chloronaphthalene and 1-bromonaphthalene solutions. We find that the most probable conductance and the distribution of conductances are both affected by the solvent. First-principles calculations show that junction conductance depends on the binding configurations (adatom, atop, and bridge) of the thiolate on the Au surface, as has been shown previously. More importantly, we find that brominated solvents can restrict the binding of thiols to specific Au sites. This mechanism offers new insight into the effects of the solvent environment on covalent bonding in molecular junctions.

Metal Nanoclusters as a Superior Polysulfides Immobilizer toward Highly Stable Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Due to their high designability, unique geometric and electronic structures, and surface coordination chemistry, atomically precise metal nanoclusters are an emerging class of functional nanomaterials at the forefront of materials research. However, the current research on metal nanoclusters is mainly fundamental, and their practical applications are still uncharted. The surface binding properties and redox activity of Au24 Pt(PET)18 (PET: phenylethanethiolate, SCH2 CH2 Ph) nanoclusters are herein harnessed as an high-efficiency electrocatalyst for the anchoring and rapid conversion of lithium polysulfides in lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs). Au24 Pt(PET)18 @G composites are prepared by using the large specific surface area, high porosity, and conductive network of graphene (G) for the construction of battery separator that can inhibit polysulfide shuttle and accelerate electrochemical kinetics. Resultantly, the LSB using a Au24 Pt(PET)18 @G-based separator presents a high reversible specific capacity of 1535.4 mA h g-1 for the first cycle at 0.2 A g-1 and a rate capability of 887 mA h g-1 at 5 A g-1 . After 1000 cycles at 5 A g-1 , the capacity is 558.5 mA h g-1 . This study is a significant step toward the application of metal nanoclusters as optimal electrocatalysts for LSBs and other sustainable energy storage systems.

In Situ Incorporation of Atomically Precise Au Nanoclusters within Zeolites for Ambient Temperature CO Oxidation

Preserving ultrasmall sizes of metal particles is a key challenge in the study of heterogeneous metal-based catalysis. Confining the ultrasmall metal clusters in a well-defined crystalline porous zeolite has emerged as a promising approach to stabilize these metal species. Successful encapsulation can be achieved by the addition of ligated metal complexes to zeolite synthesis gel before hydrothermal synthesis. However, controlling the metal particle size during post-reduction treatment remains a major challenge in this approach. Herein, an in situ incorporation strategy of pre-made atomically precise gold clusters within Na-LTA zeolite was established for the first time. With the assistance of mercaptosilane ligands, the gold clusters were successfully incorporated within the Na-LTA without premature precipitation and metal aggregation during the synthesis. We have demonstrated that the confinement of gold clusters within the zeolite framework offers high stability against sintering, leading to superior CO oxidation catalytic performance (up to 12 h at 30 °C, with a space velocity of 3000 mL g-1 h-1).

Second-order superatoms: Au52-PAP featuring a three-dimensional cluster-of-clusters core

The recent characterization of Au52-PAP cluster can be viewed as a three-dimensional arrangement featuring four Au13 motifs. As a result, a new set of superatomic orbitals are built up from the superatomic shell of each constituent unit, denoted by 1S'21P'62S'21D'102P'61F'6 and, thus, referred to as a second-order superatomic shell structure. This favors the rationalization of larger species toward the formation of cluster-assembled materials of different sizes.

The Why and How of Ultrasmall Nanoparticles

ConspectusIn this Account, we describe our research into ultrasmall nanoparticles, including their unique properties, and outline some of the new opportunities they offer. We will summarize our perspective on the current state of the field and highlight what we see as key questions that remain to be solved. First, there are several nanostructure size-scale regimes, with qualitatively distinct functional biological attributes. Broadly generalized, larger particles (e.g., larger than 300 nm) tend to be more efficiently swept away by the first line of the immune system (for example macrophages). In the "middle-sized" regime (20-300 nm), nanoparticle surfaces and shapes can be recognized by energy-dependent cellular reorganizations, then organized locally in a spatial and temporally coherent way. That energy is gated and made available by specific cellular recognition processes. The relationship between particle surface design, endogenously derived nonspecific biomolecular corona, and architectural features recognized by the cell is complex and only purposefully and very precisely designed nanoparticle architectures are able to navigate to specific targets. At sufficiently small sizes (<10 nm including the ligand shell, associated with a core diameter of a few nm at most) we enter the "quasi-molecular regime" in which the endogenous biomolecular environment exchanges so rapidly with the ultrasmall particle surface that larger scale cellular and immune recognition events are often greatly simplified. As an example, ultrasmall particles can penetrate cellular and biological barriers within tissue architectures via passive diffusion, in much the same way as small molecule drugs do. An intriguing question arises: what happens at the interface of cellular recognition and ultrasmall quasi-molecular size regimes? Succinctly put, ultrasmall conjugates can evade defense mechanisms driven by larger scale cellular nanoscale recognition, enabling them to flexibly exploit molecular interaction motifs to interact with specific targets. Numerous advances in control of architecture that take advantage of these phenomena have taken place or are underway. For instance, syntheses can now be sufficiently controlled that it is possible to make nanoparticles of a few hundreds of atoms or metalloid clusters of several tens of atoms that can be characterized by single crystal X-ray structure analysis. While the synthesis of atomically precise clusters in organic solvents presents challenges, water-based syntheses of ultrasmall nanoparticles can be upscaled and lead to well-defined particle populations. The surface of ultrasmall nanoparticles can be covalently modified with a wide variety of ligands to control the interactions of these particles with biosystems, as well as drugs and fluorophores. And, in contrast to larger particles, many advanced molecular analytical and separation tools can be applied to understand their structure. For example, NMR spectroscopy allows us to obtain a detailed image of the particle surface and the attached ligands. These are considerable advantages that allow further elaboration of the level of architectural control and characterization of the ultrasmall structures required to access novel functional regimes and outcomes. The ultrasmall nanoparticle regime has a unique status and provides a potentially very interesting direction for development.

Chondrocyte targeting gold nanoparticles protect growth plate against inflammatory damage by maintaining cartilage balance

Cartilage destruction caused by inflammation is a clinical challenge. Many studies have investigated cartilage destruction in adults, but little research was conducted on children. In this study, the protective effect of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) on the cartilage of children was realized by counteracting chondrocyte apoptosis and extracellular matrix (ECM) degradation in a young mouse model of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced growth plate (GP) cartilage damage. Initially, engineered AuNPs can be efficiently absorbed by chondrocytes, approximately 20 times the amount absorbed by macrophages, resulting in a 29% ± 0.05% increase in chondrocyte viability. Then, AuNPs exposure significantly reduced the release of inflammatory cytokines and secretion of ECM degradation factors induced by LPS. Subsequently, AuNPs were applied to resist LPS-induced cartilage destruction in young mice. AuNPs inhibited the formation of gaps, without chondrocytes and extracellular matrix, between the proliferative and hypertrophy zones of the GP cartilage, and the gaps were noticeable in the LPS group. This finding can be attributed to the capability of AuNPs to reduce the LPS-induced apoptosis rate of mouse chondrocytes by 72.38% and the LPS-induced ECM degradation rate by 70.89%. Further analysis demonstrated that remission is partly due to AuNPs' role in maintaining the balance of catabolic and anabolic factors in the ECM. Altogether, these findings indicate that AuNPs can partially protect the cartilage of children from inflammatory damage by suppressing chondrocyte apoptosis and ECM degradation.

Radiosynthesis of Stable 198Au-Nanoparticles by Neutron Activation of αvβ3-Specific AuNPs for Therapy of Tumor Angiogenesis

This paper reports on the development of stable tumor-specific gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) activated by neutron irradiation as a therapeutic option for the treatment of cancer with high tumor angiogenesis. The AuNPs were designed with different mono- or dithiol-ligands and decorated with different amounts of Arg-Gly-Asp (RGD) peptides as a tumor-targeting vector for αvβ3 integrin, which is overexpressed in tissues with high tumor angiogenesis. The AuNPs were evaluated for avidity in vitro and showed favorable properties with respect to tumor cell accumulation. Furthermore, the therapeutic properties of the [198Au]AuNPs were evaluated in vitro on U87MG cells in terms of cell survival, suggesting that these [198Au]AuNPs are a useful basis for future therapeutic concepts.

The role of halogens in Au-S bond cleavage for energy-differentiated catalysis at the single-bond limit

The transformation from one compound to another involves the breaking and formation of chemical bonds at the single-bond level, especially during catalytic reactions that are of great significance in broad fields such as energy conversion, environmental science, life science and chemical synthesis. The study of the reaction process at the single-bond limit is the key to understanding the catalytic reaction mechanism and further rationally designing catalysts. Here, we develop a method to monitor the catalytic process from the perspective of the single-bond energy using high-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy single-molecule junctions. Experimental and theoretical studies consistently reveal that the attack of a halogen atom on an Au atom can reduce the breaking energy of Au-S bonds, thereby accelerating the bond cleavage reaction and shortening the plateau length during the single-molecule junction breaking. Furthermore, the distinction in catalytic activity between different halogen atoms can be compared as well. This study establishes the intrinsic relationship among the reaction activation energy, the chemical bond breaking energy and the single-molecule junction breaking process, strengthening our mastery of catalytic reactions towards precise chemistry.

Precision nanoengineering for functional self-assemblies across length scales

As nanotechnology continues to push the boundaries across disciplines, there is an increasing need for engineering nanomaterials with atomic-level precision for self-assembly across length scales, i.e., from the nanoscale to the macroscale. Although molecular self-assembly allows atomic precision, extending it beyond certain length scales presents a challenge. Therefore, the attention has turned to size and shape-controlled metal nanoparticles as building blocks for multifunctional colloidal self-assemblies. However, traditionally, metal nanoparticles suffer from polydispersity, uncontrolled aggregation, and inhomogeneous ligand distribution, resulting in heterogeneous end products. In this feature article, I will discuss how virus capsids provide clues for designing subunit-based, precise, efficient, and error-free self-assembly of colloidal molecules. The atomically precise nanoscale proteinic subunits of capsids display rigidity (conformational and structural) and patchy distribution of interacting sites. Recent experimental evidence suggests that atomically precise noble metal nanoclusters display an anisotropic distribution of ligands and patchy ligand bundles. This enables symmetry breaking, consequently offering a facile route for two-dimensional colloidal crystals, bilayers, and elastic monolayer membranes. Furthermore, inter-nanocluster interactions mediated via the ligand functional groups are versatile, offering routes for discrete supracolloidal capsids, composite cages, toroids, and macroscopic hierarchically porous frameworks. Therefore, engineered nanoparticles with atomically precise structures have the potential to overcome the limitations of molecular self-assembly and large colloidal particles. Self-assembly allows the emergence of new optical properties, mechanical strength, photothermal stability, catalytic efficiency, quantum yield, and biological properties. The self-assembled structures allow reproducible optoelectronic properties, mechanical performance, and accurate sensing. More importantly, the intrinsic properties of individual nanoclusters are retained across length scales. The atomically precise nanoparticles offer enormous potential for next-generation functional materials, optoelectronics, precision sensors, and photonic devices.

Development of an electrochemical biosensor utilizing a combined aptamer and MIP strategy for the detection of the food allergen lysozyme

This study aims to develop a MIP-Apt-based electrochemical biosensor for the sensitive and selective determination of Lysozyme (Lyz), a food allergen. For the development of the sensor, in the first stage, modifications were made to the screen-printed electrode (SPE) surface with graphene oxide (GO) and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) to increase conductivity and surface area. The advantages of using aptamer (Apt) and molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) technology were combined in a single biointerface in the prepared sensing tool. Surface characterization of the biosensor was performed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray photoelectron spectrometry (XPS), contact angle measurements, cyclic voltammetry (CV), differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). A wide linear range from 0.001 to 100 pM was obtained under optimized conditions for the determination of Lyz detection using the proposed MIP-Apt sensing strategy. The limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) for Lyz were 3.67 fM and 12 fM, respectively. This biosensor displays high selectivity, repeatability, reproducibility, and long storage stability towards Lyz detection. The results show that a sensitive and selective sensor fabrication is achieved compared with existing methods.

Water-Soluble Chiral Ag29 Clusters Protected by Monothiol N-Acetyl-(S)-penicillamine Synthesized in One Pot

Despite significant advances in atomically precise Au clusters with chirality, Ag clusters with the relevant features are still less explored. In this study, we report successful synthesis of chiral Ag29 clusters protected by water-soluble monothiol in one pot, which is carried out by reducing Ag ions in the presence of N-acetyl-(S)-penicillamine (S-NAP) and triphenylphosphine (TPP) at 10 °C, yielding the Ag29(S-NAP)24 cluster. The obtained cluster is isolable as a solid-state powder. Optical absorption of Ag29(S-NAP)24 is almost identical with that of Ag29(R-DHLA)12, where DHLA denotes α-dihydrolipoic acid, and magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) results support the similarity of their electronic structures. The anisotropy factor of Ag29(S-NAP)24 is comparable to or larger than that of Ag29(R-DHLA)12, suggesting that the surface shell structure of Ag29(S-NAP)24 is inherently chiral, as has been observed for Ag29(R-DHLA)12. Then the use of enantiopure NAP would preferentially lead to a one-handed atomic arrangement in the clusters.

Long-term stable wireless smart contact lens for robust digital diabetes diagnosis

Wearable devices for digital continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) have attracted great attention as a new paradigm medical device for diabetes management. However, the relatively inaccurate performance and instability of CGM devices have limited their wide applications in the clinic. Here, we developed hyaluronate (HA) modified Au@Pt bimetallic electrodes for long-term accurate and robust CGM of smart contact lens. After glucose oxidation reaction, the bimetallic electrodes facilitated the rapid decomposition of hydrogen peroxide and charge transfer for robust CGM. The passivation of Au@Pt bimetallic electrode with branch-type thiolated HA prevented the dissolution of Au electrode by chloride ions in tears. In diabetic and normal rabbits, the smart contact lens with HA-Au@Pt bimetallic electrodes enabled the high correlation (ρ = 0.88) CGM with 98.6% clinically acceptable data for 3 weeks. Taken together, we could confirm the feasibility of our smart contact lens for long-term CGM for further clinical development.

Quantifying the ultrafast and steady-state molecular reduction potential of a plasmonic photocatalyst

Plasmonic materials are promising photocatalysts as they are well suited to convert light into hot carriers and heat. Hot electron transfer is suggested as the driving force in many plasmon-driven reactions. However, to date, there are no direct molecular measures of the rate and yield of plasmon-to-molecule electron transfer or energy of these electrons on the timescale of plasmon decay. Here, we use ultrafast and spectroelectrochemical surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy to quantify electron transfer from a plasmonic substrate to adsorbed methyl viologen molecules. We observe a reduction yield of 2.4 to 3.5% on the picosecond timescale, with plasmon-induced potentials ranging from [Formula: see text]3.1 to [Formula: see text]4.5 mV. Excitingly, some of these reduced species are stabilized and persist for tens of minutes. This work provides concrete metrics toward optimizing material-molecule interactions for efficient plasmon-driven photocatalysis.

-SR removal or -R removal? A mechanistic revisit on the puzzle of ligand etching of Au25(SR)18 nanoclusters during electrocatalysis

Accurate identification of active sites is highly desirable for elucidation of the reaction mechanism and development of efficient catalysts. Despite the promising catalytic performance of thiolated metal nanoclusters (NCs), their actual catalytic sites remain elusive. Traditional first-principles calculations and experimental observations suggested dealkylated S and dethiolated metal, respectively, to be the active centers. However, the real kinetic origin of thiolate etching during the electrocatalysis of NCs is still puzzling. Herein, we conducted advanced first-principles calculations and electrochemical/spectroscopic experiments to unravel the electrochemical etching kinetics of thiolate ligands in prototype Au25(SCH3)18 NC. The electrochemical processes are revealed to be spontaneously facilitated by dethiolation (i.e., desorption of -SCH3), forming the free HSCH3 molecule after explicitly including the solvent effect and electrode potential. Thus, exposed under-coordinated Au atoms, rather than the S atoms, serve as the real catalytic sites. The thermodynamically preferred Au-S bond cleavage arises from the selective attack of H from proton/H2O on the S atom under suitable electrochemical bias due to the spatial accessibility and the presence of S lone pair electrons. Decrease of reduction potential promotes the proton attack on S and significantly accelerates the kinetics of Au-S bond breakage irrespective of the pH of the medium. Our theoretical results are further verified by the experimental electrochemical and spectroscopic data. At more negative electrode potentials, the number of -SR ligands decreased with concomitant increase of the vibrational intensity of S-H bonds. These findings together clarify the atomic-level activation mechanism on the surface of Au25(SR)18 NCs.

Affinity-based electrochemical biosensor with antifouling properties for detection of lysophosphatidic acid, a promising early-stage ovarian cancer biomarker

Electrochemical techniques are considered to be highly sensitive, capable of fast response and can be easily miniaturized, properties which can aid with regard to the fabrication of compact point-of-care medical devices; however, the main challenge in developing such a tool is overcoming a ubiquitous, problematic phenomenon known as non-specific adsorption (NSA). NSA is due to the fouling of non-target molecules in the blood on the recognition surface of the device. To overcome NSA, we have developed an affinity-based electrochemical biosensor using medical-grade stainless steel electrodes and following a unique and novel strategy using silane-based interfacial chemistry to detect lysophosphatidic acid (LPA), a highly promising biomarker, which was found to be elevated in 90 % of stage I OC patients and gradually increases as the disease progresses to later stages. The biorecognition surface was developed using the affinity-based gelsolin-actin system, which was previously investigated by our group to detect LPA using fluorescence spectroscopy. We demonstrate the capability of this label-free biosensor to detect LPA in goat serum with a detection limit of 0.7 µM as a proof-of-concept for the early diagnosis of ovarian cancer.

Deconstructing Electrostatics of Functionalized Metal Nanoparticles from Molecular Dynamics Simulations

Gold nanoparticles (NPs) with different surface functionalizations can selectively interact with specific proteins, allowing a wide range of possible applications in biotechnology and biomedicine. To prevent their tendency to aggregate and to modulate their interaction with charged biomolecules or substrates (e.g., for biosensing applications), they can be functionalized with charged groups, introducing a mutual interaction which can be modulated by changing the ionic strength of the solvent. In silico modeling of these systems is often addressed with low-resolution models, which must account for these effects in the, often implicit, solvent representation. Here, we present a systematic conformational dynamic characterization of ligand-coated gold nanoparticles with different sizes, charges, and functionalizations by means of atomistic molecular dynamics simulations. Based on these, we deconstruct their electrostatic properties and propose a general representation of their average-long-range interactions extendable to different sizes, charges, and ionic strengths. This study clarifies in detail the role of the different features of the NP (charge, size, structure) and of the ionic strength in determining the details of the interparticle interaction and represents the first step toward a general strategy for the parametrization of NP coarse-grained models able to account for varying ionic strengths.

Do quantum interference effects manifest in acyclic aliphatic molecules with anchoring groups?

The ability to control single molecule electronic conductance is imperative for achieving functional molecular electronics applications such as insulation, switching, and energy conversion. Quantum interference (QI) effects are generally used to control electronic transmission through single molecular junctions by tuning the molecular structure or the position of the anchoring group(s) in the molecule. While previous studies focussed on the QI between σ and/or π channels of the molecular backbone, here, we show that single molecule electronic devices can be designed based on QI effects originating from the interactions of anchoring groups. Furthermore, while previous studies have concentrated on the QI mostly in conjugated/cyclic systems, our study showcases that QI effects can be harnessed even in the simplest acyclic aliphatic systems-alkanedithiols, alkanediamines, and alkanediselenols. We identify band gap state resonances in the transmission spectrum of these molecules whose positions and intensities depend on the chain length, and anchoring group sensitive QI between the nearly degenerate molecular orbitals localized on the anchoring groups. We predict that these QI features can be harnessed through an external mechanical stimulus to tune the charge transport properties of single molecules in the break-junction experiments.

Chemoselectivity Streamlines the Approach to Linear and Y-Shaped Thiol-Polyethers Starting from Thiocarboxylic Acids

Thiol-functionalized polyethers, especially poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), have extensive applications in biomedicine and materials sciences. Herein, we report a simple one-pot synthesis of α-thiol-ω-hydroxyl polyethers through ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of epoxides using thiocarboxylic acid initiators followed by in situ aminolysis. The efficient and chemoselective metal-free Lewis pair catalyst avoids transthioesterification thus achieving well-controlled molar mass, low dispersity, and high end-group fidelity. Kinetic and calculation results demonstrated a fast-initiation mode of the ROP for the strong nucleophilicity of the thiocarboxylate anion and its weak interaction with Lewis acid. The method is expanded for α-thiol-ω-dihydroxyl (Y-shaped) PEO by virtue of the stability of thioester during the ROP. The thiol functionality in linear/Y-shaped PEO is further corroborated by the intensified interaction with gold surface and the resultant protein resistance behavior.

Potentiating Tweezer Affinity to a Protein Interface with Sequence-Defined Macromolecules on Nanoparticles

Survivin, a well-known member of the inhibitor of apoptosis protein family, is upregulated in many cancer cells, which is associated with resistance to chemotherapy. To circumvent this, inhibitors are currently being developed to interfere with the nuclear export of survivin by targeting its protein-protein interaction (PPI) with the export receptor CRM1. Here, we combine for the first time a supramolecular tweezer motif, sequence-defined macromolecular scaffolds, and ultrasmall Au nanoparticles (us-AuNPs) to tailor a high avidity inhibitor targeting the survivin-CRM1 interaction. A series of biophysical and biochemical experiments, including surface plasmon resonance measurements and their multivalent evaluation by EVILFIT, reveal that for divalent macromolecular constructs with increasing linker distance, the longest linkers show superior affinity, slower dissociation, as well as more efficient PPI inhibition. As a drawback, these macromolecular tweezer conjugates do not enter cells, a critical feature for potential applications. The problem is solved by immobilizing the tweezer conjugates onto us-AuNPs, which enables efficient transport into HeLa cells. On the nanoparticles, the tweezer valency rises from 2 to 16 and produces a 100-fold avidity increase. The hierarchical combination of different scaffolds and controlled multivalent presentation of supramolecular binders was the key to the development of highly efficient survivin-CRM1 competitors. This concept may also be useful for other PPIs.
