Simulating the full spin manifold of triplet-pair states in a series of covalently linked TIPS-pentacenes

Combined density functional theory and multireference configuration interaction methods have been used to elucidate singlet fission (SF) pathways and mechanisms in three regioisomers of side-on linked pentacene dimers. In addition to the optically bright singlets (S1 $$ {}_1 $$ and S2 $$ {}_2 $$ ) and singly excited triplets (T1 $$ {}_1 $$ and T2 $$ {}_2 $$ ), the full spin manifold of multiexcitonic triplet-pair states (1 $$ {}^1 $$ ME,3 $$ {}^3 $$ ME,5 $$ {}^5 $$ ME) has been considered. In the ortho- and para-regioisomers, the1 $$ {}^1 $$ ME and S1 $$ {}_1 $$ potentials intersect upon geometry relaxation of the S1 $$ {}_1 $$ excitation. In the meta-regioisomer, the crossing occurs upon delocalization of the optically bright excitation. The energetic accessibility of these conical intersections and the absence of low-lying charge-transfer states suggests a direct SF mechanism, assisted by charge-resonance effects in the1 $$ {}^1 $$ ME state. While the5 $$ {}^5 $$ ME state does not appear to play a role in the SF mechanism of the ortho- and para-regioisomers, its participation in the disentanglement of the triplet pair is conceivable in the meta-regioisomer.

Magnetic fields reveal signatures of triplet-pair multi-exciton photoluminescence in singlet fission

The photophysical processes of singlet fission and triplet fusion have numerous emerging applications. They involve the separation of a photo-generated singlet exciton into two dark triplet excitons and the fusion of two dark triplet excitons into an emissive singlet exciton, respectively. The role of the excimer state and the nature of the triplet-pair state in these processes have been a matter of contention. Here we analyse the room temperature time-resolved emission of a neat liquid singlet fission chromophore and show that it exhibits three spectral components: two that correspond to the bright singlet and excimer states and a third component that becomes more prominent during triplet fusion. This spectrum is enhanced by magnetic fields, confirming its origins in the recombination of weakly coupled triplet pairs. It is thus attributed to a strongly coupled triplet pair state. These observations unite the view that there is an emissive intermediate in singlet fission and triplet fusion, distinct from the broad, unstructured excimer emission.

Promotion of Fast and Efficient Singlet Fission Process of PDI Dimers by Selenium Substitution

Singlet fission (SF) is a triplet generation mechanism capable of turning a singlet exciton into two triplet excitons. It has the potential to enhance the power conversion efficiency of single-junction solar cells. Perylene diimides (PDIs) are a class of dye molecules with photovoltaic properties and are beginning to receive more and more attention due to their potential for SF. Here, we report a selenium-substituted PDI dimer, Se-PDI-II, and we studied its SF mechanism by using steady-state, transient absorption, and time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy. Compared with the unsubstituted dimer PDI-II, we found that the introduction of selenium atoms can suppress excimer emission during the SF process, showing much higher SF efficiency and triplet yield.

Photophysics of Benzoxazole and Dicyano Functionalised Diketopyrrolopyrrole Derivatives: Insights into Ultrafast Processes and the Triplet State

Diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) functionalised with an electron donating unit acts as a donor-acceptor molecules that have shown potential for application in dyes and photovoltaics. These molecules offer broad absorption/emission properties and structure-dependent dynamics. In this study, we used femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy to investigate the photo-initiated dynamics of thiophene linked DPP derivatives. The thio-DPPs are further functionalised by different electrons withdrawing terminal groups, namely benzoxazole and thiophene dicyanide. The benzoxazole derivative is strongly emissive and directly relaxes directly to the ground state chloroform solution. Thiophene dicyanide derivative exhibits distinct spectral evolution in the first 10 ps, associated with structural and vibronic process. Later, it crosses over to the triplet state with a yield of 20 %. In the solid-state (thin film), we observed a signal that resembles singlet fission. However, upon careful analysis of temperature-dependent steady state absorbance spectra, we conclude that these features are due to laser-induced thermal artifacts. We describe a simplified excited state evolution in the thin film that does not include any additional excited states. These findings have significant implications for the analysis of triplet formation, which plays a major role in the photophysics of many organic materials.

Symmetry-Breaking Charge Separation Mediated Triplet Population in a Perylenediimide Trimer at the Single-Molecule Level

Herein, we demonstrate triplet excited-state population in a conformationally rigid perylenediimide trimer (PDI-T) via intramolecular symmetry-breaking charge separation (SB-CS) at the single-molecule level. The single-molecule fluorescence intensity trajectories of PDI-T in nonpolar polystyrene matrix (ε = 2.60) exhibit prolonged fluorescence with infrequent dark states, representing the triplet and/or the charge transfer states. In contrast, in a poly(vinyl alcohol) matrix (ε = 7.80), erratic blinking dynamics resulting in low photon counts were observed, corroborating the feasibility of charge separation in a polar environment. In agreement with the single-molecule measurements, transient absorption spectroscopy of PDI-T reveals ultrafast SB-CS (τCS < 5 ps) in polar tetrahydrofuran (ε = 7.58) and acetone (ε = 20.70), with the population of the triplet excited-state through charge recombination. The current investigation shows the utility of rigid and weakly coupled molecular constructs in controlling triplet generation and SB-CS for potential applications in optoelectronic devices.

Singlet fission in TIPS-anthracene thin films

Singlet fission is an exciton multiplication process that allows for the conversion of one singlet exciton into two triplet excitons. Organic semiconductors, such as acenes and their soluble bis(triisopropylsilylethynyl) (TIPS) substituted counterparts, have played a major role in elucidating the understanding of the underlying mechanisms of singlet fission. Despite this, one prominent member of the acene family that has received little experimental attention to date is TIPS-anthracene, even with computational studies suggesting potential high singlet fission yields in the solid state. Here, time-resolved spectroscopic and magneto-photoluminescence measurements were performed on spin-cast films of TIPS-anthracene, showing evidence for singlet fission. A singlet fission yield of 19% (out of 200%) is estimated from transient absorption spectroscopy. Kinetic modeling of the magnetic field effect on photoluminescence suggests that fast rates of triplet dissociation lead to a low magnetic photoluminescence effect and that non-radiative decay of both the S1 and 1(TT) states is the cause for the low triplet yield.

Singlet Fission in a New Series of Systematically Designed Through-space Coupled Tetracene Oligomers

Singlet fission (SF) holds great promise for current photovoltaic technologies, where tetracenes, with their relatively high triplet energies, play a major role for application in silicon-based solar cells. However, the SF efficiencies in tetracene dimers are low due to the unfavorable energetics of their singlet and triplet energy levels. In the solid state, tetracene exhibits high yields of triplet formation through SF, raising great interest about the underlying mechanisms. To address this discrepancy, we designed and prepared a novel molecular system based on a hexaphenylbenzene core decorated with 2 to 6 tetracene chromophores. The spatial arrangement of tetracene units, induced by steric hindrance in the central part, dictates through-space coupling, making it a relevant model for solid-state chromophore organization. We then revealed a remarkable increase in SF quantum yield with the number of tetracenes, reaching quantitative (196 %) triplet pair formation in hexamer. We observed a short-lived correlated triplet pair and limited magnetic effects, indicating ineffective triplet dissociation in these through-space coupled systems. These findings emphasize the crucial role of the number of chromophores involved and the interchromophore arrangement for the SF efficiency. The insights gained from this study will aid designing more efficient and technology-compatible SF systems for applications in photovoltaics.

Intramolecular Singlet Fission Coupled with Intermolecular Triplet Separation as a Strategy to Achieve High Triplet Yields in Fluorene-Based Small Molecules

In this work, detailed experimental proof and in-depth analysis of the singlet fission (SF) mechanism, operative in fluorene-based small molecules, are carried out by employing advanced time-resolved spectroscopies with nanosecond and femtosecond resolution. The investigation of the effect of solution concentration and solvent viscosity together with temperature and excitation wavelength demonstrates INTRAmolecular formation of the correlated triplet pair followed by INTERmolecular independent triplet separation via a "super-diffusional" triplet-triplet transfer process. This unconventional INTRA- to INTERmolecular SF may be considered an "ideal" mechanism. Indeed, intramolecular formation of the correlated triplet pair is here interestingly proved for small molecules rather than large multichromophoric systems, allowing easy synthesis and processability while maintaining good control over the SF process. On the other hand, the intermolecular triplet separation may be exploited to achieve high triplet quantum yields in these new SF small molecules.

Simultaneous Intra- and Intermolecular Singlet Fission in Bipentacene Macrocycle Aggregates

Singlet fission (SF) is a process where a singlet state splits into two triplet states, which is essential for enhancing optoelectronic devices. Macrocyclic structures allow for precise control of chromophore orientation and facilitate singlet fission in solutions. However, the behavior of these structures in thin films, crucial for solid-state device optimization, remains underexplored. This study examines the aggregation and singlet fission processes of bipentacene macrocycles (BPc) in thin films using molecular dynamics simulations and electronic structure calculations. Findings indicate that BPc aggregates more rapidly with less chloroform, aligning parallel to the substrate. Intramolecular singlet fission (iSF) rates are rarely changed during evaporation, but the efficiency of intermolecular singlet fission (xSF) improves due to the increase in packing domains, suggesting that orderly crystal domains are not necessary for device efficiency. This opens avenues for varied device designs and traditional solution-based methods for optimal device development.

An Exploration of Substituent Effects on the Photophysical Properties of Monobenzopentalenes

Monobenzopentalenes have received moderate attention compared to dibenzopentalenes, yet their accessibility as stable, non-symmetric structures with diverse substituents could be interesting for materials applications, including molecular photonics. Recently, monobenzopentalene was considered computationally as a potential chromophore for singlet fission (SF) photovoltaics. To advance this compound class towards photonics applications, the excited state energetics must be characterized, computationally and experimentally. In this report we synthesized a series of stable substituted monobenzopentalenes and provided the first experimental exploration of their photophysical properties. Structural and opto-electronic characterization revealed that all derivatives showed 1H NMR shifts in the olefinic region, bond length alternation in the pentalene unit, low-intensity absorptions reflecting the ground-state antiaromatic character and in turn the symmetry forbidden HOMO-to-LUMO transitions of ~2 eV and redox amphotericity. This was also supported by computed aromaticity indices (NICS, ACID, HOMA). Accordingly, substituents did not affect the fulfilment of the energetic criterion of SF, as the computed excited-state energy levels satisfied the required E(S1)/E(T1)>2 relationship. Further spectroscopic measurements revealed a concentration dependent quenching of the excited state and population of the S2 state on the nanosecond timescale, providing initial evidence for unusual photophysics and an alternative entry point for singlet fission with monobenzopentalenes.

Singlet fission initiating organic photosensitizations

The feasibility of singlet fission (SF) in organic photosensitizers is investigated through spin-flip long-range corrected time-dependent density functional theory. This study focuses on four major organic photosensitizer molecules: benzophenone, boron-dipyrromethene, methylene blue, and rose bengal. Calculations demonstrate that all these molecules possess moderate [Formula: see text]-stacking energies and closely-lying singlet (S) and quintet (triplet-triplet, TT) excitations, satisfying the essential conditions for SF: (1) Near-degenerate low-lying S and (TT) excitations with a significant S-T energy gap, and (2) Moderate [Formula: see text]-stacking energy of chromophores, slightly higher than solvation energy, enabling dissociation for triplet-state chromophore generation. Moreover, based on the El-Sayed rule, intersystem crossing is found to simultaneously proceed at very slow rates in all these photosensitizers. This is attributed to the fact that the lowest singlet excitation of the monomers partly involves [Formula: see text] transitions alongside the main [Formula: see text] transitions. The proposed mechanisms are strongly substantiated by comparisons with experimental studies.

Room-temperature quantum coherence of entangled multiexcitons in a metal-organic framework

Singlet fission can generate an exchange-coupled quintet triplet pair state 5TT, which could lead to the realization of quantum computing and quantum sensing using entangled multiple qubits even at room temperature. However, the observation of the quantum coherence of 5TT has been limited to cryogenic temperatures, and the fundamental question is what kind of material design will enable its room-temperature quantum coherence. Here, we show that the quantum coherence of singlet fission-derived 5TT in a chromophore-integrated metal-organic framework can be over hundred nanoseconds at room temperature. The suppressed motion of the chromophores in ordered domains within the metal-organic framework leads to the enough fluctuation of the exchange interaction necessary for 5TT generation but, at the same time, does not cause severe 5TT decoherence. Furthermore, the phase and amplitude of quantum beating depend on the molecular motion, opening the way to room-temperature molecular quantum computing based on multiple quantum gate control.

Recent Advance in the Development of Singlet-Fission-Capable Polymeric Materials

Singlet fission (SF) is a spin-allowed process in which a higher-energy singlet exciton is converted into two lower-energy triplet excitons via a triplet pair intermediate state. Implementing SF in photovoltaic devices holds the potential to exceed the Shockley-Queisser limit of conventional single-junction solar cells. Although great progress has been made in exploiting the underlying mechanism of SF over the past decades, the scope of materials capable of SF, particularly polymeric materials, remains poor. SF-capable polymer is one of the most potential candidates in the implementation of SF into devices due to their distinct superiorities in flexibility, solution processability and self-assembly behavior. Notably, recent advancements have demonstrated high-performance SF in isolated donor-acceptor (D-A) copolymer chains. This review provides an overview of recent progress in the development of SF-capable polymeric materials, with a significant focus on elucidating the mechanisms of SF in polymers and optimizing the design strategies for SF-capable polymers. Additionally, the paper discusses the challenges encountered in this field and presents future perspectives. It is expected that this comprehensive review will offer valuable insights into the design of novel SF-capable polymeric materials, further advancing the potential for SF implementation in photovoltaic devices.

Roles of Singlet Fission in the Photosensitization of Silicon Phthalocyanine

The roles of singlet fission in the triplet generation of silicon phthalocyanine (SiPc), a compound analogous to the IRDye700DX photosensitizer used in near-infrared photoimmunotherapy, are investigated by considering the energetical relation between the excitations of this compound. These excitations are obtained through spin-flip long-range corrected time-dependent density functional theory calculations. To initiate singlet fission, chromophores must meet two conditions: (1) near-degenerate low-lying singlet and quintet (triplet-triplet) excitations with a considerable energy gap of the lowest singlet and triplet excited states and (2) moderate π-stacking energy of chromophores, which is higher than but not far from the solvation energy, to facilitate the dissociation and generation of triplet-state chromophores. The present calculations demonstrate that SiPc satisfies both of these conditions after the formation of π-stacking irrespective of the presence of an axial ligand(s), suggesting that singlet fission plays a crucial role in the triplet generation process, although intersystem crossing occurs simultaneously at a very slow rate.

Catalyzing Singlet Fission by Transition Metals: Second versus Third Row Effects

The synthesis and characterization of platinum(II) and palladium(II) complexes bearing two (dimers Pt(Lpc)2Cl2 and Pd(Lpc)2Cl2), one (monomers Pt(Lpc)(Lref)Cl2 and Pd(Lpc)(Lref)Cl2), or no (reference compounds Pt(Lref)2Cl2 and Pd(Lref)2Cl2) pentacene-based pyridyl ligands are presented. Photophysical properties of the dimers are probed by means of steady-state and time-resolved transient absorption measurements in comparison to the monomer and model compounds. Our results document that despite enhanced spin-orbit coupling from the presence of heavy atoms, intramolecular singlet fission (iSF) is not challenged by intersystem crossing. iSF thus yields correlated triplet pairs and even uncorrelated triplet excited states upon decoherence. Importantly, significant separation of the two pentacenyl groups facilitates decoupling of the two chromophores. Furthermore, the mechanism of iSF is altered depending on the respective metal center, that is, Pt(II) versus Pd(II). The dimer based on Pt(II), Pt(Lpc)2Cl2, exhibits a direct pathway for the iSF and forms a correlated triplet pair with singlet-quintet spin-mixing within 10 ns in variable solvents. On the other hand, the dimer based on Pd(II), Pd(Lpc)2Cl2, leads to charge transfer mixing during the population of the correlated triplet pair that is dependent on solvent polarity. Moreover, Pd(Lpc)2Cl2 gives rise to a stable equilibrium between singlet and quintet correlated triplet pairs with lifetimes of up to 170 ns. Inherent differences in the size and polarizability, when contrasting platinum(II) with palladium(II), are the most likely rationale for the underlying trends.

Synthesis and intramolecular singlet fission properties of ortho-phenylene linked oligomers of diphenylhexatriene

In molecular dimers that undergo intramolecular singlet fission (iSF), efficient iSF is typically accompanied by triplet pair annihilation at rates which prohibit effective triplet harvesting. Collisional triplet pair separation and intramolecular separation by hopping to additional sites in extended oligomers are both strategies that have been reported to be effective for acene based iSF materials in the literature. Herein, a family of highly soluble diphenylhexatriene (DPH) oligomers were synthesized and investigated using transient absorption spectroscopy to determine whether these approaches can be applied to the non-acene singlet fission chromophore, DPH. While iSF proceeds rapidly for all three new materials, neither concentration nor oligomer size result in significantly enhanced triplet pair lifetime relative to the dilute dimer case. These null results indicate the fallibility of the collisional separation and oligomerisation strategies.

Excitation localization/delocalization induced intramolecular singlet fission in cyclopentadithiophene-based quinoidal derivatives

Two triplet excitons are generated through an ultrafast photophysical process, namely singlet fission (SF), providing a solution for efficient solar energy usage. In this work, we provide an effective guideline for designing SF materials by adjusting the planarity in cyclopentadithiophene (CPDT) derivatives. A practical strategy is proposed for tuning the quinoidal-biradical resonance structures by varying the electron push-pull groups of CPDTs for SF. The localized, delocalized, and intermediate charge-transfer excited configurations are predicted in the singlet excited state via computational simulations, which is further confirmed by ultrafast spectroscopy. Deduced from the potential energy surfaces in the low-lying excited states and transient absorption, the delocalized excited state is formed in 2.1 ps via postulated intramolecular SF in a polar solvent, followed by the ultrafast formation of the free triplet state with a lifetime of 6.8 ps. In comparison with different cross-conjugated chromophores, it is found that the increase in the charge separation could enhance the triplet-pair generation for iSF. We expect that by introducing symmetry-breaking modifications in the electronic configurations and adjusting the separation between the push-pull groups of CPDTs, it should be possible to prolong the duration of the free triplet state by preventing recombination within the triplet-pair excited configuration.

Unveiling Charge-Transfer Dynamics at Singlet Fission Layer/Hybrid Perovskite Interface

Singlet fission (SF) materials have been applied in various types of solar cells to pursue higher power conversion efficiency (PCE) beyond the Shockley-Queisser (SQ) limit. SF implementation in perovskite solar cells has not been successfully realized yet due to the insufficient understanding of the SF/perovskite heterojunctions. In this work, we attempt to elucidate the charge dynamics of an SF/perovskite system by incorporating a well-known SF molecule, TIPS-pentacene, and a triple-cation perovskite Cs0.05(FA0.85MA0.15)0.95PbI2.55Br0.45, owing to their well-matched energy structures. The transient absorption spectra and kinetic fitting plots suggest an electron-transfer process from the triplet state of TIPS-pentacene to perovskite in the picosecond regime, which increases the carrier density by 20% in the perovskite layer. This work confirms the existence of an electron-transfer process between the SF material and perovskite, providing a pathway to SF-enhanced perovskite solar cells.

Rapid-Scan Resonant Two-Dimensional Impulsive Stimulated Raman Spectroscopy of Excited States

Photochemical reactions occur in the electronically excited state, which is effectively represented by a multidimensional potential energy surface (PES) with a vast degree of freedom of nuclear coordinates. The elucidation of the intricate shape of the PES constitutes an important topic in the field of photochemistry and has long been studied both experimentally and theoretically. Recently, fully time-domain resonant two-dimensional Raman spectroscopy has emerged as a potentially powerful tool to provide unique information about the coupling between vibrational manifolds in the excited state. However, the wide application of this technique has been significantly hampered by the technical difficulties associated with experimental implementation and remains challenging. Herein, we demonstrate time-domain resonant two-dimensional impulsive stimulated Raman spectroscopy (2D-ISRS) of excited states using sub-10 fs pulses based on the rapid scan of the time delay, which facilitates the efficient collection of time-domain vibrational signals with high sensitivity. As a proof-of-principle experiment, we performed 2D-ISRS of 6,13-bis(triisopropylsilylethynyl)pentacene (TIPS-pentacene) in solution. Through 2D Fourier transformation of the high-quality time-time oscillatory signal, we obtained a 2D frequency-frequency correlation map of excited-state TIPS-pentacene in the broad frequency window of 0-2000 cm^-1. The data clearly resolve a number of cross peaks that signify the correlations among excited-state vibrational manifolds. The high capability of the rapid-scan-based 2D-ISRS spectrometer presented in this study enables the systematic investigation of various photochemical reaction systems, thereby further promoting the understanding and applications of this new multidimensional spectroscopy.

Intramolecular Singlet Fission in Pentacene Oligomers via an Intermediate State

Intramolecular singlet fission (iSF) is an efficient strategy of multiexciton generation via a singlet exciton splitting into a correlated triplet pair in one organic molecule with more than two chromophores. Propeller-shaped iptycene-linked triisopropylsilyl(TIPS)-ethynyl functionalized pentacene oligomers (pent-monomer, pent-dimer, and pent-trimer) were synthesized, and the iSF dynamics of pent-dimer and -trimer were monitored by a visible-near-IR transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy. Quantum yields of the triplet pair, ∼80%, of both estimated by near-IR TA spectral analysis are in good agreement with the results of global analysis and triplet sensitization experiments. The iSF rate of pent-trimer is slightly faster than that of pent-dimer even with one more chromophore site. The unexpectedly weak difference indicates the existence of an intermediate process to realize iSF. The intermediate process might be determined by through-bond electronic coupling of the homoconjugation bridge in the pentacene oligomers. Our results suggest the importance of the rigid bridge to the fast iSF rate and the elongated lifetime of the correlated triplet pair in pentacene oligomers.

Singlet Fission-Based High-Resolution X-Ray Imaging Scintillation Screens

X-ray imaging technology is critical to numerous different walks of daily life, ranging from medical radiography and security screening all the way to high-energy physics. Although several organic chromophores are fabricated and tested as X-ray imaging scintillators, they generally show poor scintillation performance due to their weak X-ray absorption cross-section and inefficient exciton utilization efficiency. Here, a singlet fission-based high-performance organic X-ray imaging scintillator with near unity exciton utilization efficiency is presented. Interestingly, it is found that the X-ray sensitivity and imaging resolution of the singlet fission-based scintillator are dramatically improved by an efficient energy transfer from a thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) sensitizer, in which both singlet and triplet excitons can be efficiently harnessed. The fabricated singlet fission-based scintillator exhibits a high X-ray imaging resolution of 27.5 line pairs per millimeter (lp mm^-1 ), which exceeds that of most commercial scintillators, demonstrating its high potential use in medical radiography and security inspection.

Sensitized Singlet Fission in Rigidly Linked Axial and Peripheral Pentacene-Subphthalocyanine Conjugates

The goal of harnessing the theoretical potential of singlet fission (SF), a process in which one singlet excited state is split into two triplet excited states, has become a central challenge in solar energy research. Covalently linked dimers provide crucial models for understanding the role of chromophore arrangement and coupling in SF. Sensitizers can be integrated into these systems to expand the absorption bandwidth through which SF can be accessed. Here, we define the role of the sensitizer-chromophore geometry in a sensitized SF model system. To this end, two conjugates have been synthesized consisting of a pentacene dimer (SF motif) connected via a rigid alkynyl bridge to a subphthalocyanine (the sensitizer motif) in either an axial or a peripheral arrangement. Steady-state and time-resolved photophysical measurements are used to confirm that both conjugates operate as per design, displaying near unity energy transfer efficiencies and high triplet quantum yields from SF. Decisively, energy transfer between the subphthalocyanine and pentacene dimer occurs ca. 26 times faster in the peripheral conjugate, even though the two chromophores are ca. 3 Å farther apart than in the axial conjugate. Following a theoretical evaluation of the dipolar coupling, V_dip², and the orientation factor, κ², of both the axial (V_dip² = 140 cm^-2; κ² = 0.08) and the peripheral (V_dip² = 724 cm^-2; κ² = 1.46) arrangements, we establish that this rate acceleration is due to a more favorable (nearly co-planar) relative orientation of the transition dipole moments of the subphthalocyanine and pentacenes in the peripheral constellation.

Singlet Fission in Perylene Monoimide Single Crystals and Polycrystalline Films

Singlet fission (SF) is a spin-allowed process in which a photogenerated singlet exciton down-converts into two triplet excitons. Perylene-3,4-dicarboximide (PMI) has singlet and triplet state energies of 2.4 and 1.1 eV, respectively; thus making SF slightly exoergic and providing triplet excitons that have sufficient energy to raise the efficiency of single-junction solar cells by reducing thermalization losses from hot excitons formed when absorbed photons have energies higher than the semiconductor bandgap. However, PMI SF in the solid state has not been studied previously. Here, we show that 2,5-diphenyl-N-(2-ethylhexyl)perylene-3,4-dicarboximide (dp-PMI) crystallizes into a slip-stacked intermolecular morphology favorable for SF. Transient absorption microscopy and spectroscopy show that dp-PMI SF occurs in ≤50 ps in both single crystals and polycrystalline thin films with a triplet yield of 150 ± 20%. Ultrafast SF in the solid state, the high triplet yield, and its photostability make dp-PMI an attractive candidate for SF-enhanced solar cells.

Photogeneration of Spin Quintet Triplet-Triplet Excitations in DNA-Assembled Pentacene Stacks

Singlet fission (SF), an exciton-doubling process observed in certain molecular semiconductors where two triplet excitons are generated from one singlet exciton, requires correctly tuned intermolecular coupling to allow separation of the two triplets to different molecular units. We explore this using DNA-encoded assembly of SF-capable pentacenes into discrete π-stacked constructs of defined size and geometry. Precise structural control is achieved via a combination of the DNA duplex formation between complementary single-stranded DNA and the local molecular geometry that directs the SF chromophores into a stable and predictable slip-stacked configuration, as confirmed by molecular dynamics (MD) modeling. Transient electron spin resonance spectroscopy revealed that within these DNA-assembled pentacene stacks, SF evolves via a bound triplet pair quintet state, which subsequently converts into free triplets. SF evolution via a long-lived quintet state sets specific requirements on intermolecular coupling, rendering the quintet spectrum and its zero-field-splitting parameters highly sensitive to intermolecular geometry. We have found that the experimental spectra and zero-field-splitting parameters are consistent with a slight systematic strain relative to the MD-optimized geometry. Thus, the transient electron spin resonance analysis is a powerful tool to test and refine the MD-derived structure models. DNA-encoded assembly of coupled semiconductor molecules allows controlled construction of electronically functional structures, but brings with it significant dynamic and polar disorders. Our findings here of efficient SF through quintet states demonstrate that these conditions still allow efficient and controlled semiconductor operation and point toward future opportunities for constructing functional optoelectronic systems.

Singlet fission preserves polarisation correlation of excitons

Singlet fission (SF) holds the promise to circumvent the photovoltaic efficiency limit to reach a power-conversion efficiency above 34%. SF of TIPS-pentacene (TIPS-Pn) has been investigated but its mechanism is yet to be well elucidated. Recently, we developed a nanoparticle (NP) system, in which doping of TIPS-Pn in a host matrix yields a range of average intermolecular distances, d, to study the dependence of SF in TIPS-Pn on d. At large d values, where the bimolecular SF process should be unfavourable, a relatively high SF quantum yield (Φ_SF) is still observed, which implies a deviation from a random distribution of TIPS-Pn throughout the NP. Here, using polarisation-sensitive femtosecond time-resolved spectroscopy and Monte Carlo simulations of exciton migration and SF, we quantify the level of clustering of TIPS-Pn in the host matrix, which is responsible for the higher than expected Φ_SF. The experimental data indicate a preservation of polarisation correlation by SF, which is uncommon because energy transfer in amorphous materials tends to result in depolarisation. We show that the preservation of polarisation correlation is due to SF upon exciton migration. Although exciton migration decorrelates polarisation, SF acts to remove decorrelated excitons to give an overall preservation of polarisation correlation.

Soluble Diphenylhexatriene Dimers for Intramolecular Singlet Fission with High Triplet Energy

Intramolecular singlet fission (iSF) facilitates single-molecule exciton multiplication, converting an excited singlet state to a pair of triplet states within a single molecule. A critical parameter in determining the feasibility of SF-enhanced photovoltaic designs is the triplet energy; many existing iSF materials have triplet energies too low for efficient transfer to silicon via a photon multiplier scheme. In this work, a series of six novel dimers based upon the high-triplet-energy, SF-active chromophore, 1,6-diphenyl-1,3,5-hexatriene (DPH) [E(T₁) ∼ 1.5 eV], were designed, synthesized, and characterized. Transient absorption spectroscopy and fluorescence lifetime studies reveal that five of the dimers display iSF activity, with time constants for singlet fission varying between 7 ± 2 ps and 2.2 ± 0.2 ns and a high triplet yield of 163 ± 63% in the best-performing dimer. A strong dependence of the rate of fission on the coupling geometry is demonstrated. For optimized iSF behavior, close spatial proximity and minimal through-bond communication are found to be crucial for balancing the rate of SF against the reverse recombination process.

Singlet fission dynamics modulated by molecular configuration in covalently linked pyrene dimers, Anti- and Syn-1,2-di(pyrenyl)benzene

Covalently linked dimers (CLDs) and their structural isomers have attracted much attention as potential materials for improving power conversion efficiencies through singlet fission (SF). Here, we designed and synthesized two covalently ortho-linked pyrene (Py) dimers, anti- and syn-1,2-di(pyrenyl)benzene (Anti-DPyB and Syn-DPyB, respectively), and investigated the effect of molecular configuration on SF dynamics using steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopies. Both Anti-DPyB and Syn-DPyB, which have different Py-stacking configurations, form excimers, which then relax to the correlated triplet pair ((T₁T₁)) state, indicating the occurrence of SF. Unlike previous studies where the excimer formation inhibited an SF process, the (T₁T₁)'s of Anti-DPyB and Syn-DPyB are formed through the excimer state. The dissociation of (T₁T₁)'s to 2T₁ in Anti-DPyB is more favorable than in Syn-DPyB. Our results showcase that the molecular configuration of a CLD plays an important role in SF dynamics.

Triplets with a Twist: Ultrafast Intersystem Crossing in a Series of Electron Acceptor Materials Driven by Conformational Disorder

Control over the populations of singlet and triplet excitons is key to organic semiconductor technologies. In different contexts, triplets can represent an energy loss pathway that must be managed (i.e., solar cells, light-emitting diodes, and lasers) or provide avenues to improve energy conversion (i.e., photon upconversion and multiplication systems). A key consideration in the interplay of singlet and triplet exciton populations in these systems is the rate of intersystem crossing (ISC). In this work, we design, measure, and model a series of new electron acceptor molecules and analyze them using a combination of ultrafast transient absorption and ultrafast broadband photoluminescence spectroscopies. We demonstrate that intramolecular triplet formation occurs within several hundred picoseconds in solution and is accelerated considerably in the solid state. Importantly, ISC occurs with sufficient rapidity to compete with charge formation in modern organic solar cells, implicating triplets in intrinsic exciton loss channels in addition to charge recombination. Density functional theory calculations reveal that ISC occurs in triplet excited states characterized by local deviations from orbital π-symmetry associated with rotationally flexible thiophene rings. In disordered films, structural distortions, therefore, result in significant increases in spin-orbit coupling, enabling rapid ISC. We demonstrate the generality of this proposal in an oligothiophene model system where ISC is symmetry-forbidden and show that conformational disorder introduced by the formation of a solvent glass accelerates ISC, outweighing the lower temperature and increased viscosity. This proposal sheds light on the factors responsible for facile ISC and provides a simple framework for molecular control over spin states.

A Magnetic field sensor based on OLED / organic photodetector stack

In this study an all-organic magnetic field sensor based on an organic light emitting diode (OLED) and organic photodetector (OPD) layer stack is presented. This sensor opens possibilities to create printable, flexible magnetic field sensors using commercially viable components, allowing magnetic field sensors to be simply integrated into existing OLED technology. The sensor function is driven by the large magneto-electroluminescence (MEL) of a thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF)-emitter based OLED, which in reference devices have shown an MEL of about 60% for magnetic fields on the order of 10 mT. Maximum sensitivity of about 0.15 nA/mT (150 μV/mT or 15 mV/kG with amplification) is achieved at a magnetic field of 3 mT to 4 mT. While the detectivity is limited to ~ 10-3 T·Hz-1/2, we show this can be improved upon on as the magnetic field detection sensitivity of OLEDs measured by an external Si-detector is about an order of magnitude higher. Sensitivity of 2 nA/mT and detectivities better than 10-5 T·Hz -1/2 are demonstrated, and the intrinsic detectivity limit is estimated to be on the order of 10-9 T·Hz -1/2.

Singlet fission initiating triplet generations of BODIPY derivatives through [Formula: see text]-stacking: a theoretical study

The role of singlet fission (SF) in the triplet-state generation mechanism of 1,3,5,7-tetramethyl-boron-dipyrromethene derivatives is revealed by exploring the cause for the solvent dependence of the generation rate. Comparing the adsorption energy calculations of solvent molecules, i.e., cyclohexane, chloroform and acetonitrile molecules, to the derivatives with the [Formula: see text]-stacking energies of these derivatives surprisingly show that the hierarchy of the solvation energies and [Formula: see text]-stacking energies strongly correlates with the experimentally-suggested solvent dependence of the triplet-state generation of these derivatives for five and more adsorbing solvent molecules. Following this finding, the excitation spectra of these derivatives in acetonitrile solvent are explored using the proprietary spin-flip long-range corrected time-dependent density functional theory. It is, consequently, confirmed that the [Formula: see text]-stacking activates the second lowest singlet excitation to trigger the spin-allowed transition to the singlet doubly-excited tetraradical (TT)[Formula: see text] state, which generates the long-lived quintet (TT)[Formula: see text] state causing the SF. However, it is also found that the [Formula: see text]-stacking also get a slow intersystem crossing active around the intersections of the lowest singlet excitations with the lowest triplet T[Formula: see text] excitations in parallel with the SF due to the charge transfer characters of the lowest singlet excitations. These results suggest that SF initiates the triplet-state generations through near-degenerate low-lying singlet and (TT) excitations with a considerable singlet-triplet energy gap after the [Formula: see text]-stacking of chromophores stronger than but not far from the solvation. Since these derivatives are organic photosensitizers, this study proposes that SF should be taken into consideration in developing novel heavy atom-free organic photosensitizers, which will contribute to a variety of research fields such as medical care, photobiology, energy science, and synthetic chemistry.

Probing Through-Bond and Through-Space Interactions in Singlet Fission-Based Pentacene Dimers

Interchromophoric interactions such as Coulombic coupling and exchange interactions are crucial to the functional properties of numerous π-conjugated systems. Here, we use magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectroscopy to investigate interchromophoric interactions in singlet fission relevant pentacene dimers. Using a simple analytical model, we outline a general relationship between the geometry of pentacene dimers and their calculated MCD response. We analyze experimental MCD spectra of different covalently bridged pentacene dimers to reveal how the molecular structure of the "bridge" affects the magnitude of through-space Coulombic and through-bond exchange interactions in the system. Our results show that through-bond interactions are significant in dimers with conjugated molecules as bridging units and these interactions promote the overall electronic coupling in the system. Our generalized approach paves the way for the application of MCD in investigating interchromophoric interactions across a range of π-conjugated systems.

Direct Exciton Harvesting from a Bound Triplet Pair

Singlet fission is commonly defined as the generation of two triplet excitons from a single absorbed photon. However, ambiguities within this definition arise due to the complexity of the various double triplet states that exist in SF chromophores and the corresponding interconversion processes. To clarify this process, singlet fission is frequently depicted as sequential two-step conversion in which a singlet exciton decays into a bound triplet-pair biexciton state that dissociates into two "free" triplet excitons. However, this model discounts the potential for direct harvesting from the coupled biexciton state. Here, it is demonstrated that individual triplet excitons can be extracted directly from a bound triplet pair. It is demonstrated that due to the requirement for geminate triplet-triplet annihilation in intramolecular singlet fission compounds, unique spectral and kinetic signatures can be used to quantify triplet-pair harvesting yields. An internal quantum efficiency for triplet exciton transfer from the triplet pair of >50%, limited only by the solubility of the compounds is achieved. The harvesting process is not dependent on the net multiplicity of the triplet-pair state, suggesting that an explicit, independent dissociation step is not a requirement for using triplet pairs to do chemical or electrical work.

Singlet Fission in Colloidal Nanoparticles of Amphipathic Diketopyrrolopyrrole Derivatives: Probing the Role of the Charge Transfer State

To evaluate the role of the charge transfer (CT) state in the singlet fission (SF) process, we prepared three 3,6-bis(thiophen-2-yl)diketopyrrolopyrrole (TDPP) derivatives with zero (Ph₂TDPP), one (Ph₂TDPP-COOH), and two (Ph₂TDPP-(COOH)₂) carboxylic groups, respectively. Their colloidal nanoparticles were also prepared by a simple precipitation method. The SF dynamics and mechanism in these colloid nanoparticles were investigated by using steady-state/transient absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy. Steady-state absorption spectra reveal that the strength of the CT resonance interactions between the adjacent DPP units is increased gradually from Ph₂TDPP to Ph₂TDPP-COOH and then to Ph₂TDPP-(COOH)₂. Fluorescence and transient absorption spectra demonstrate that SF is proceeded via a CT-assisted superexchange mechanism in these three nanoparticles. Furthermore, SF rate and yield are enhanced gradually with the increase of the number of the carboxylic group, which may be attributed to the enhancement of the CT coupling strength. The result of this work not only provides a better understanding of the SF mechanism especially for the role of the CT state but also gives some new insights for the design of efficient SF materials based on DPP derivatives.

Pitfalls of quantifying intersystem crossing rates in singlet-fission chromophore solutions

Singlet fission (SF), a process that produces two triplet excitons from one singlet exciton, has attracted recent interest for its potential to circumvent the detailed-balance efficiency limit of single-junction solar cells. For the potential of SF to be fully realized, accurate assignment and quantification of SF is necessary. Intersystem crossing (ISC) is another process of singlet to triplet conversion that is important to distinguish from SF to avoid either over- or under-estimation of SF triplet production. Here, we quantify an upper bound on the rate of ISC in two commonly studied SF chromophores, TIPS-pentacene and TIPS-tetracene, by using transient absorption spectroscopy of solutions of varying concentrations in toluene. We show that SF in solutions of these acenes has previously been misidentified as ISC, and vice versa. By determining a bimolecular SF rate constant in concentrated solutions in which SF dominates over ISC, we distinguish triplet formation due to SF from triplet formation due to ISC, and show that the characteristic time scale of ISC must be longer than 325 ns in TIPS-pentacene, while it must be longer than 118 ns in TIPS-tetracene. We additionally note that no excimer formation is observed in the relatively dilute (up to 8 mM) solutions studied here, indicating that previous excimer formation observed at much higher concentrations may be partially due to aggregate formation. This work highlights that an accurate quantification of ISC is crucial as it leads to accurate determination of SF rate constants and yields.

The Role of Crystal Packing on the Optical Response of Trialkyltetrelethynyl Acenes

The electronic and optical responses of an organic semiconductor (OSC) are dictated by the chemistries of the molecular or polymer building blocks and how these chromophores pack in the solid state. Understanding the physicochemical natures of these responses are not only critical for determining OSC performance for a particular application, but the UV/visible optical response may also be of potential use to determine aspects of the molecular-scale solid-state packing for crystal polymorphs or thin-film morphologies that are difficult to determine otherwise. To probe these relationships, we report the quantum-chemical investigation of a series of trialkyltetrelethynyl acenes (tetrel = silicon or germanium) that adopt the brickwork (BW), slip-stack (SS), or herringbone (HB) packing configurations; the π-conjugated backbones considered here are pentacene (PEN) and anthradithiophene (ADT). For comparison, HB-packed (unsubstituted) pentacene is also included. Density functional theory (DFT) and G0W0 (single-shot GW) electronic band structures, G0W0-BSE (Bethe-Salpeter Equation)-derived optical spectra, polarized ϵ2 spectra, and distributions of both singlet and triplet exciton wave functions are reported. Configurational disorder is also considered. Further, we evaluate the probability of singlet fission in these materials through energy conservation relationships.

Microsecond-resolved smartphone time-gated luminescence spectroscopy

Time-gated luminescence spectra are usually measured by laboratory instruments equipped with high-speed excitation sources and spectrometers, which are always bulky and expensive. To reduce the reliance on expensive laboratory instruments, we demonstrate the first, to the best of our knowledge, use of a smartphone for the detection of time-gated luminescence spectra. A mechanical chopper is used as the detection shutter and an optical switch is placed at the edge of the wheel to convert the chopping signal into a transistor-transistor logic (TTL) signal which is used to control the excitation source and achieve synchronization. The time-gated luminescence spectra at different delay times of Eu(TTA)₃ powder and the solutions of Eu-tetracycline complex are successfully detected with a temporal resolution of tens of microseconds by the proposed approach. We believe our approach offers a route toward portable instruments for the measurement of luminescence spectra and lifetimes.

Effect of nanoscale confinement on ultrafast dynamics of singlet fission in TIPS-pentacene

Singlet fission (SF) is a phenomenon for the generation of a pair of triplet excitons from a singlet excited molecule interacting with another adjacent molecule in its ground electronic state. By increasing the effective number of charge carriers and reducing thermal dissipation of excess energy, SF is promised to enhance light-harvesting efficiency for photovoltaic applications. While SF has been extensively studied in thin films and crystals, the same has not been explored much within a confined medium. Here, we report the ultrafast SF dynamics of triisopropylsilylethynyl pentacene (TIPS-Pn) in micellar nanocavity of varying sizes (prepared from TX-100, CTAB, and SDS surfactants). The nanoparticle with a smaller size contains weakly coupled chromophores and is shown to be more efficient for SF followed by triplet generation as compared to the nanoparticles of larger size which contain strongly coupled chromophores and are less efficient due to the presence of singlet exciton traps. Through these studies, we delineate how a subtle interplay between short-range and long-range interaction among chromophores confined within nanoparticles, fine-tuned by the curvature of the micellar interface but irrespective of the nature of the micelle (cationic or anionic or neutral), play a crucial role in SF through and generation of triplets.

Energy Versus Electron Transfer: Managing Excited-State Interactions in Perovskite Nanocrystal-Molecular Hybrids

Energy and electron transfer processes in light harvesting assemblies dictate the outcome of the overall light energy conversion process. Halide perovskite nanocrystals such as CsPbBr₃ with relatively high emission yield and strong light absorption can transfer singlet and triplet energy to surface-bound acceptor molecules. They can also induce photocatalytic reduction and oxidation by selectively transferring electrons and holes across the nanocrystal interface. This perspective discusses key factors dictating these excited-state pathways in perovskite nanocrystals and the fundamental differences between energy and electron transfer processes. Spectroscopic methods to decipher between these complex photoinduced pathways are presented. A basic understanding of the fundamental differences between the two excited deactivation processes (charge and energy transfer) and ways to modulate them should enable design of more efficient light harvesting assemblies with semiconductor and molecular systems.

Excited-State Dynamics of 5,14- vs 6,13-Bis(trialkylsilylethynyl)-Substituted Pentacenes: Implications for Singlet Fission

Singlet fission is a process in conjugated organic materials that has the potential to considerably improve the performance of devices in many applications, including solar energy conversion. In any application involving singlet fission, efficient triplet harvesting is essential. At present, not much is known about molecular packing arrangements detrimental to singlet fission. In this work, we report a molecular packing arrangement in crystalline films of 5,14-bis(triisopropylsilylethynyl)-substituted pentacene, specifically a local (pairwise) packing arrangement, responsible for complete quenching of triplet pairs generated via singlet fission. We first demonstrate that the energetic condition necessary for singlet fission is satisfied in amorphous films of the 5,14-substituted pentacene derivative. However, while triplet pairs form highly efficiently in the amorphous films, only a modest yield of independent triplets is observed. In crystalline films, triplet pairs also form highly efficiently, although independent triplets are not observed because triplet pairs decay rapidly and are quenched completely. We assign the quenching to a rapid nonadiabatic transition directly to the ground state. Detrimental quenching is observed in crystalline films of two additional 5,14-bis(trialkylsilylethynyl)-substituted pentacenes with either ethyl or isobutyl substituents. Developing a better understanding of the losses identified in this work, and associated molecular packing, may benefit overcoming losses in solids of other singlet fission materials.

Singlet Fission Materials for Photovoltaics: from Small Molecules to Macromolecules

Singlet fission (SF) is a spin-allowed process in which a singlet state splits into two triplet states. Materials that enable SF have attracted great attention in the last decade, mainly stemming from the potential of overcoming the Shockley-Queisser (SQ) limit in photoenergy conversion. In the past decade, a large number of new molecules exhibiting SF have been explored and many devices based on SF materials have been studied, though the mechanistic understanding is still obscure. This review focuses on the recent developments of SF materials, including small molecules, oligomers and polymers. The molecular design strategies and related mechanisms of SF are discussed. Then the dynamics of charge transfer and energy transfer between SF materials and other materials are introduced. Further, we discuss the progresses of implementing SF in photovoltaics. It is hoped that a comprehensive understanding to the SF materials, devices and mechanism may pave a new way for the design of next generation photovoltaics. This article is protected by copyright. Parallel versus Twisted Pentacenes: Conformational Impact on Singlet Fission

We placed two pentacene chromophores at the termini of a diacetylene linker to investigate the impact of excitation wavelength, conformational flexibility, and vibronic coupling on singlet fission. Photoexcitation of the low-energy absorption results in a superposed mixture of states, which transform on an ultrafast time-scale into a spin-correlated and vibronically coupled/hot delocalized triplet pair 1(T1T1)deloc. Regardless of temperature, the lifetime for 1(T1T1)deloc is less than 2 ps. In contrast, photoexcitation of the high-energy absorption results in the formation of 1(T1T1)deloc lasting 1.0 ps, which then decays at room temperature within 4 ps via triplet-triplet annihilation. Lowering the temperature enables 1(T1T1)deloc to delocalize and vibronically decouple, in turn affording 1(T1T1)loc. In addition, our results suggest that the quasi-free rotation at the diacetylene spacer may lead to twisted conformations with very low SF quantum yields, highlighting the need of controlling this structural aspect in the design of new singlet fission active molecules.

Förster Resonance Energy Transfer between Fluorescent Organic Semiconductors: Poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene-alt-benzothiadiazole) and 6,13-Bis(triisopropylsilylethynyl)pentacene

In the present study, an investigation of the electronic excitation energy transfer between two p-type fluorescent semiconductors, F8BT [poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene-alcohol-benzothiadiazole] and TIPS-P [6,13-bis(triisopropylsilylethynyl)pentacene], has been carried out in a chloroform solution using steady-state and time-domain fluorescence techniques. The spectral overlap integral between donor (F8BT) emission and acceptor (TIPS-P) absorption is 2.04 × 10¹⁵ nm⁴/(M cm), and the corresponding critical transfer distance is 53.12 Å. In donor decay dynamics, at the lower acceptor concentrations, the observed results deviate from the Förster theory due to the combined effect of diffusion and energy migration. However, it does not exhibit energy migration and distribution for higher acceptor concentrations, and the system follows the Förster model of resonance excitation energy transfer (FRET). The higher value of the donor-acceptor interaction strength than self-interaction (donor-donor interaction) appears to be responsible for this behavior. Further, in acceptor decay, the appearance of the rise time and its decrease with the acceptor concentration confirms FRET from F8BT to TIPS-P.

Molecular rotational conformation controls the rate of singlet fission and triplet decay in pentacene dimers

Three pentacene dimers have been synthesized to investigate the effect of molecular rotation and rotational conformations on singlet fission (SF). In all three dimers, the pentacene units are linked by a 1,4-diethynylphenylene spacer that provides almost unimpeded rotational freedom between the pentacene- and phenylene-subunits in the parent dimer. Substituents on the phenylene spacer add varying degrees of steric hindrance that restricts both the rotation and the equilibrium distribution of different conformers; the less restricted conformers exhibit faster SF and more rapid subsequent triplet-pair recombination. Furthermore, the rotational conformers have small shifts in their absorption spectra and this feature has been used to selectively excite different conformers and study the resulting SF. Femtosecond transient absorption studies at 100 K reveal that the same dimer can have orders of magnitude faster SF in a strongly coupled conformer compared to a more weakly coupled one. Measurements in polystyrene further show that the SF rate is nearly independent of viscosity whereas the triplet pair lifetime is considerably longer in a high viscosity medium. The results provide insight into design criteria for maintaining high initial SF rate while suppressing triplet recombination in intramolecular singlet fission.

In this study we show that one molecule can have vastly different singlet fission and triplet recombination rates depending on its rotational freedom and the relative orientation of the pentacene moieties.

Altering singlet fission pathways in perylene-dimers; perylene-diimide versus perylene-monoimide

We used a systematic approach to shed light on the inherent differences in perylenes, namely monoimides versus diimides, including coplanarity and dipole moment, and their impact on singlet fission (SF) by designing, synthesizing, and probing a full fledged series of phenylene- and naphthalene-linked dimers. Next to changing the functionality of the perylene core, we probed the effect of the spacers and their varying degrees of rotational freedom, molecular electrostatic potentials, and intramolecular interactions on the SF-mechanism and -efficiencies. An arsenal of spectroscopic techniques revealed that for perylene-monoimides, a strong charge-transfer mixing with the singlet and triplet excited states restricts SF and yields low triplet quantum yields. This is accompanied by an up-conversion channel that includes geminate triplet-triplet recombination. Using perylene-diimides alters the SF-mechanism by populating a charge-separated-state intermediate, which either favors or shuts-down SF. Napthylene-spacers bring about higher triplet quantum yields and overall better SF-performance for all perylene-monoimides and perylene-diimides. The key to better SF-performance is rotational freedom because it facilitates the overall excited-state polarization and amplifies intramolecular interactions between chromophores.

Extracting quantitative dielectric properties from pump-probe spectroscopy

Optical pump-probe spectroscopy is a powerful tool for the study of non-equilibrium electronic dynamics and finds wide applications across a range of fields, from physics and chemistry to material science and biology. However, a shortcoming of conventional pump-probe spectroscopy is that photoinduced changes in transmission, reflection and scattering can simultaneously contribute to the measured differential spectra, leading to ambiguities in assigning the origin of spectral signatures and ruling out quantitative interpretation of the spectra. Ideally, these methods would measure the underlying dielectric function (or the complex refractive index) which would then directly provide quantitative information on the transient excited state dynamics free of these ambiguities. Here we present and test a model independent route to transform differential transmission or reflection spectra, measured via conventional optical pump-probe spectroscopy, to changes in the quantitative transient dielectric function. We benchmark this method against changes in the real refractive index measured using time-resolved Frequency Domain Interferometry in prototypical inorganic and organic semiconductor films. Our methodology can be applied to existing and future pump-probe data sets, allowing for an unambiguous and quantitative characterisation of the transient photoexcited spectra of materials. This in turn will accelerate the adoption of pump-probe spectroscopy as a facile and robust materials characterisation and screening tool.

Photoinduced changes in transmission, reflection and scattering prevent conventional pump-probe spectroscopy to unambiguously assign the origin of spectral signatures. Ashoka et al. have developed an optical modelling technique to extract quantitative and unambiguous changes in the dielectric function from standard pump-probe measurements.

Quantifying Exciton Transport in Singlet Fission Diblock Copolymers

Singlet fission (SF) is a mechanism of exciton multiplication in organic chromophores, which has potential to drive highly efficient optoelectronic devices. Creating effective device architectures that operate by SF critically depends on electronic interactions across multiple length scales─from individual molecules to interchromophore interactions that facilitate multiexciton dephasing and exciton diffusion toward donor-acceptor interfaces. Therefore, it is imperative to understand the underpinnings of multiexciton transport and interfacial energy transfer in multichromophore systems. Interestingly, block copolymers (BCPs) can be designed to control multiscale interactions by tailoring the nature of the building blocks, yet SF dynamics are not well understood in these macromolecules. Here, we designed diblock copolymers comprising an inherent energy cleft at the interface between a block with pendent pentacene chromophores and an additional block with pendent tetracene chromophores. The singlet and triplet energy offset between the two blocks creates a driving force for exciton transport along the BCP chain in dilute solution. Using time-resolved optical spectroscopy, we have quantified the yields of key energy transfer steps, including both singlet and triplet energy transfer processes across the pentacene-tetracene interface. From this modular BCP architecture, we correlate the energy transfer time scales and relative yields with the length of each block. The ability to quantify these energy transfer processes provides valuable insights into exciton transport at critical length scales between bulk crystalline systems and small-molecule dimers─an area that has been underexplored.
