Abstract
PURPOSE Evidence shows that CD4+ T cells are altered in obesity and play a significant role in the systemic inflammation occurring in adults with the disease. Since the profile of these cells is poorly understood in the pediatric population, the present study aims to investigate the profile of CD4+ T lymphocytes and the plasma levels of cytokines in this population. METHODS Using flow cytometry, we compared the expression profile of lymphocyte markers, master transcription factors, cytokines and molecules involved in the regulation of the immune response in CD4+ T cells from children and adolescents with obesity (OB group, n=20) to those with eutrophy (EU group, n=16). Plasma levels of cytokines in both groups were determined by CBA. RESULTS The OB group presents a lower frequency of CD3+ T cells, as well as a decreased frequency of CD4+ T cells expressing CD28, IL-4, and FOXP3, but an increased frequency of CD4+IL-17A+ cells compared to the EU group. The frequency of CD28 is increased in Th2 and Treg cells in the OB group, while CTLA-4 is decreased in all subpopulations compared to the EU group. Furthermore, Th2, Th17 and Treg profiles can differentiate the EU and OB groups. IL-10 plasma levels are reduced in the OB group and negatively correlated with adiposity and inflammatory parameters. CONCLUSION CD4+ T cells have an altered pattern of expression in children and adolescents with obesity, contributing to the inflammatory state and clinical characteristics of these patients.

Abstract
Seahorses are characterized by unique characteristics such as a male pregnancy reproductive strategy and grasping preferences, which make these species vulnerable to various environmental risks. Zinc (Zn) is one of the most frequently occurring toxic elements in coastal waters; however, little is known about the effect of Zn exposure on seahorses. In the present study, line seahorses (Hippocampus erectus) were exposed to waterborne Zn (0.2 and 1.0 mg/L) and the impact on growth and gonadal development was investigated. Zn exposure induced growth improvement, but also led to gonadal dysfunction in the lined seahorse. Female seahorses exhibited high testosterone levels, immature follicles, and weight increase after Zn exposure, which is the typical characteristics of a polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)-like phenotype. Transcriptomic data suggested that the Zn-induced growth promotion resulted from the dysregulated expression of fat accumulation genes. Further investigation of gene expression profiles in the brain, ovaries, and testes indicated that Zn affected the expression of genes involved in growth, immunity, tissue remodeling, and gonadal development by regulating serum steroid hormone levels and androgen receptor expression. This study not only clarifies the complex impact of Zn on seahorses using physiological, histological, and molecular evidence but can also provide new insights into the mechanism underlying PCOS in reproductive-aged women. Moreover, this work demonstrates the risk of the common practice of Zn supplementation in the aquaculture industry as the consequent growth yield may not represent a healthy condition.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Traditionally associated with undernutrition, increasing evidence suggests micronutrient deficiencies can coexist with overnutrition. Therefore, this work aimed to systematically review the associations between iron, zinc and vitamin A (VA) status and weight status (both underweight and overweight) in children and young people. METHODS Ovid Medline, Ovid Embase, Scopus and Cochrane databases were systematically searched for observational studies assessing micronutrient status (blood, serum or plasma levels of iron, zinc or VA biomarkers) and weight status (body mass index or other anthropometric measurement) in humans under 25 years of any ethnicity and gender. Risk of bias assessment was conducted using the American Dietetic Association Quality Criteria Checklist. Where possible, random effects restricted maximum likelihood meta-analyses were performed. RESULTS After screening, 83 observational studies involving 190 443 participants from 44 countries were identified, with many studies having reported on more than one micronutrient and/or weight status indicator. Iron was the most investigated micronutrient, with 46, 28 and 27 studies reporting data for iron, zinc and VA status, respectively. Synthesising 16 records of OR from seven eligible studies, overnutrition (overweight and obesity) increased odds of iron deficiency (ID) (OR (95% CI): 1.51 (1.20 to 1.82), p<0.0001, I2=40.7%). Odds appeared to be higher for children living with obesity (1.88 (1.33 to 2.43), p<0.0001, I2=20.6%) in comparison to those with overweight (1.31 (0.98 to 1.64), p<0.0001, I2=40.5%), although between group differences were not significant (p=0.08). CONCLUSIONS Overnutrition is associated with increased risk of ID, but not zinc or VA deficiencies, with an inverted U-shaped relationship observed between iron status and bodyweight. Our results highlight significant heterogeneity in the reporting of micronutrient biomarkers and how deficiencies were defined. Inflammation status was rarely adequately accounted for, and the burden of ID may well be under-recognised, particularly in children and young people living with overnutrition. Abstract
The nutritional status of children is always a concern for medical professionals. Increasingly, obesogenic factors have created a new global epidemic. Obesity is characterized by persistent inflammation, which can have detrimental effects on the growth and development of children. Iron and ferritin are both important factors to consider when evaluating these children due to their role in the pathophysiology of chronic inflammation. Recently, ultrasonographic evaluation seems to be an increasingly used method in pediatric clinical practice. In this study, we included 98 children aged 6-14 years, 72 of whom were obese and 26 had normal weight. The data obtained indicated that there was an association between low iron and increased ferritin levels, aspects of non-alcoholic fatty liver visualized by ultrasonography, and the degree of fibrosis assessed elastographically. Ultrasonography can help us identify liver damage, but the possibility of identifying an association with other paraclinical investigations such as iron and ferritin levels can be cumulative. In this way, the assessment can be more complex, as the child benefits from comprehensive evaluation and management. The results drew attention to non-invasive, easy-to-perform, and low-cost methods of assessing obese children in terms of iron metabolism and structural liver changes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aims of the present umbrella review were (a) to summarize the available evidence on the effectiveness of mobile applications aimed at increasing physical activity; (b) to analyse the effect of an increase in physical activity on kinanthropometric variables, body composition and physical fitness of adolescents aged 12-16 years old; and (c) to determine the strengths and limitations of the interventions carried out with adolescents aged 12-16 years old through the use of mobile applications, to provide recommendations for future research. METHODS The most relevant inclusion criteria were (a) adolescents aged 12-16 years old; (b) interventions carried out only with mobile apps; (c) pre-post measurements; (d) participants without illnesses or injuries; and (e) interventions lasting more than 8 weeks. The databases used to identify the systematic reviews were the Web of Science, Google Scholar, PubMed and Scopus. Two reviewers independently used the AMSTAR-2 scale to measure the methodological quality of the included reviews and also carried out an analysis of external validity, with a third reviewer participating in the cases in which consensus was not reached. RESULTS A total of 12 systematic reviews were included (these included a total of 273 articles that used electronic devices, of which 22 studies exclusively used mobile applications with adolescents aged 12-16). Regarding physical activity and its effect on body composition, kinanthropometric variables and physical fitness, no significant differences were found for any of the variables analysed, and the results were not sufficiently consistent to determine the influence of these interventions. CONCLUSIONS It is important to highlight that the scientific research conducted so far showed that mobile applications were not effective in increasing physical activity and changing the kinanthropometric variables, body composition or physical fitness of adolescents. Thus, future research with stronger methodological rigour and larger samples is needed to provide stronger evidence.

Abstract
Aims This study evaluates the epidemiology of headache and migraine among adolescents aged 12 to 15. Methods A school-based cross-sectional study was conducted to collect and analyze data from students in grades 7-10 over the course of one month, using a simple random sampling method. The overall number of participants in this study was 692, with an average age of 13.9 years (SD = 1.3). Descriptive measures and Fisher's exact test were computed. Multivariate regression was calculated to assess the predictors of headache and migraine. Findings. Approximately one-half of the students reported having headaches: tension-type headaches (10.3%), migraines (4.8%), and other headache types (31.5%). Moreover, girl students in the age group of 14-15 reported more headaches and migraines. Conclusion The prevalence of headache and migraine in Jordan is high and increasing as students grow older. Health education programs led by school nurses and other healthcare practitioners are urgently needed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) are at greater risk of abnormal birth weight. Since the level of biochemical indicators could often affect the intrauterine growth and development of the fetus, it is of great practical significance to understand the changes of biochemical levels across pregnancy in women with GDM and to find out the indicators that play an important role in predicting birth weight. METHODS The data source of this study was from the Xi'an Longitudinal Mother-Child Cohort study (XAMC), in which women with GDM with normal and high pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) and their newborns between January 1st and March 31st in 2018 were included. The data of ferritin, serum lipid profile and fasting plasma glucose (FPG) of mothers in the three trimesters of pregnancy, as well as birth weight of newborns were all collected from medical records. Multiple linear regression and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to explore the association of the biochemical indexes and birth weight. A P value < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS A total of 782 mother-infant pairs were finally included and divided into normal weight group (NG) (n = 530, 67.8%) and overweight/obesity group (OG) (n = 252, 32.2%) according to maternal pre-pregnancy BMI. The level of ferritin in both NG and OG decreased during pregnancy (P for trend < 0.001 for all), whereas the levels of total cholesterol (TC), high density cholesterol (HDL-C), low density cholesterol (LDL-C) and triglycerides (TG) all showed an upward trend (P for trend < 0.05 for all). The levels of FPG in the two groups remained in a relatively stable during the whole pregnancy even though it was higher in OG during the 2nd and 3rd trimesters, whilst HbAlc levels in NG women increased (P for trend = 0.043) during pregnancy. Meanwhile, the risk of macrosomia and large-for-gestational-age (LGA) increased with the increase of FPG level (P for trend < 0.05). Multivariate logistic regression analyses results showed that only FPG level in the 3rd trimester was correlated with birth weight, with birth weight increased by 44.9 g for each SD increase in FPG level. CONCLUSION Maternal FPG in the 3rd trimester is an independent predictor of newborn birth weight, and a higher level of that is associated with an increased risk of macrosomia and LGA.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Ferritin is associated with an increased prevalence of diabetes mellitus. Moreover, the ferritin levels differ across the body compositions. Although there were studies reporting the association of ferritin and diabetes, the alteration in ferritin-diabetes association by body composition differences is rarely explained. Thus, the aim of this study is to identify the effects of body compositions on the association between ferritin and diabetes parameters among the Japanese population. METHODS This study analyzed the data of a cross-sectional study with 1065 subjects aged over 19 years in the Iwaki area, Japan. Independent variables were ferritin and body compositions, while dependent variables were blood sugar, HbA1c, and diabetes mellitus. Correlations between serum ferritin and blood sugar and HbA1c were analyzed using Spearman's Rank Correlation. Multivariate linear or logistic regressions were used to investigate the effects of body compositions (body fat percentage, muscle mass, or visceral fat level) on the ferritin-diabetes associations by adjusting the confounders. RESULTS There were significant positive correlations between ferritin and blood sugar in both sexes (p < 0.05), while a significant correlation between ferritin and HbA1c was found only in females (p < 0.001). Higher ferritin was significantly associated with an increase in blood sugar in individuals with normal body fat percentage (lowest vs. highest quartile group, coefficient=5.07, 95 % confidence intervals [CI]: 1.48-8.65), normal visceral fat level (lowest vs. highest quartile group, coefficient=4.84, 95 % CI: 1.74-7.94), and very high muscle mass (lowest vs. highest quartile group, coefficient=14.14, 95 % CI: 5.00-23.29). CONCLUSIONS By our study findings, individuals' body composition notably influenced the associations of serum ferritin and diabetes parameters, and the association was attenuated in obese individuals.

Abstract
Iron deficiency anemia is one of the most common issues in clinical practice. It can be caused by intense physical activity, among other things. The aim of the study was to assess serum iron parameters in a group of men who engage in regular physical activity. The study group was composed of 20 men who regularly perform strength or endurance sports, whereas the control group consisted of 20 men without any sports activity. The red blood cell (RBC) parameters, platelet count (PLT), and white blood cell (WBC) count in venous blood samples were assessed with an automated hematology analyzer. The serum concentration of ferritin was determined through an immunology assay. There were no statistically significant differences between groups comparing RBC parameters and WBC. However, statistical analysis showed dissimilarity in PLT count and serum ferritin concentration comparing control and study groups (p < 0.05). It was shown that lower serum ferritin concentration concerns men with regular physical activity, whereas other blood parameters were not affected in this group.

High prevalence of malnutrition and vitamin A deficiency among schoolchildren of rural areas in Malaysia using a multi-school assessment approach. Br J Nutr 2023; 129:454-467. Abstract
Childhood malnutrition is known as a public health concern globally. The present study aims to assess the anthropometry and blood biochemical status of rural primary schoolchildren in Malaysia. A total of 776 children (7-11 years old) from ten rural primary schools from five states were included in this study. Nutritional outcomes were assessed based on sex, age group and school categories among the children (median age: 9 years (P25:8, P75:10)). The overall prevalence of malnutrition was 53·4 %. Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) was recorded at 20·6 and 39·8 % based on retinol and retinol-binding protein (RBP) levels, respectively. Anaemia, iron deficiency (ID), iron-deficiency anaemia (IDA) and elevated inflammation were found at 14·9, 17·9, 9·1 and 11·5 %, respectively. Malnutrition, VAD, anaemia, ID, IDA and elevated inflammation were more prevalent among Orang Asli (OA) schoolchildren compared with Non-Orang Asli schoolchildren. Higher occurrences of VAD and anaemia were also found among children aged <10 years. Retinol, RBP, α-carotene, ferritin and haemoglobin levels were lower among undernourished children. Besides, overweight/obese children exhibited a higher level of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein. Multivariate analysis demonstrated that OA school children (adjusted OR (AOR): 6·1; 95 % CI 4·1, 9·0) and IDA (AOR: 3·6; 95 % CI 1·9, 6·6) were associated with stunting among this population. The present study revealed that malnutrition, micronutrient deficiencies and anaemia are prevalent among rural primary schoolchildren in Malaysia, especially those from OA schools and younger age children (<10 years). Hence, more appropriate and targeted measures are needed to improve the nutritional status of these children.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Recent studies revealed that children who are overweight have a higher risk of iron deficiency, although the etiology of this relationship remains unclear. The aim of the study was to evaluate the association between changes in obesity status between 4 and 9 years of age and iron deficiency. SUBJECTS This population-based cohort study included 1347 children from the ELOIN study, conducted in Madrid, Spain. Follow-up with physical examinations and a computer-assisted telephone interview were carried out at 4, 6 and 9 years of age, and a blood test was performed at 9 years. METHODS Changes in obesity were estimated based on body mass index and waist circumference, according to the persistence or variation in obesity rates at 4, 6 and 9 years and were classified as follows: (1) Stable without obesity; (2) Remitting obesity at 9 years; (3) Incident obesity or relapse at 9 years; and (4) Stable with obesity. Iron deficiency was defined as transferrin saturation value below 16%. Odds ratios (ORs) for iron deficiency were estimated according to obesity status using logistic regression and adjusted for confounding variables, including C-reactive protein (CRP). RESULTS The prevalence of iron deficiency in the stable general obesity (GO) and abdominal obesity (AO) groups was 38.2% and 41.2%, versus 23.6% and 23.4% in the stable without obesity groups, respectively. The ORs for iron deficiency were 1.85 (95% CI: 1.03-3.32) in the stable GO group and 2.34 (95% CI: 1.29-4.24) in the stable AO group. This association disappeared when CRP was included in the analysis. CONCLUSIONS An extended state of obesity during the first stages of life is associated with iron deficiency, and this association may be mediated by CRP. Prevention and early detection of obesity in children should be a priority to avoid a double burden of malnutrition.

Abstract
Worldwide, obesity constitutes a significant health issue. There is the perception that obesity is influenced by subclinical inflammation caused by trace elements (TE). Lipocalin 2 (Lcn2) is an adipokine that is abundantly expressed in adipose tissue, largely in response to metabolic stress; TE deficiency is expressed in metabolic dysfunction as increased oxidative stress, the development of dyslipidaemia and insulin resistance. The primary aim of this study is to explore the relationship between Lcn2 inflammatory biomarkers and the TE status of subjects with morbid obesity who are undergoing laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG); the secondary aim is to evaluate the Zn-to-Cu ratio in those with a detected TE deficiency. When this prospective cohort study was conducted, 107 subjects with morbid obesity (i.e., 69 women, 38 men) ranging in age from 20 to 55 years were recruited. Anthropometric measurements and laboratory investigations were performed preoperatively and nine months postoperatively; and blood samples were collected to determine the subjects' iron, Zn, Cu, Lcn2, and other inflammatory biomarkers. The results revealed 16.82% of the subjects exhibited preoperative Zn deficiency, which increased to 22.43% postoperatively; none of studied subjects exhibited Cu deficiency in the two consecutive measurements; and the 10.28% preoperative prevalence of iron deficiency increased to 15.89% postoperatively. While a negative correlation was observed between the delta body weight change and Lcn2, leptin, and HOMA-IR, a positive correlation was observed between the delta body weight change and the Zn-to-Cu ratio. These findings suggest the existence of preoperative obesity is associated with inflammatory status that may be triggered by TE deficiency and impaired insulin sensitivity; moreover, LSG may accentuate TE deficiency. As such, a patient's Lcn2 and Zn-to-Cu ratio may be utilized as potential biomarkers of their TE status and metabolic improvement after LSG.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Excess bodily iron content is commonly associated with obesity and metabolic associated medical conditions and is thought to lead to cardiovascular disease. The effect of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) on hepatic iron overload remains to be determined. OBJECTIVE To assess the evolution of histologically proven hepatic iron overload after RYGB. METHODS This is an exploratory historical cohort study in which 42 individuals who underwent RYGB, and then a second surgical procedure had paired liver biopsies collected. Hepatic iron overload and NAFLD features were assessed through histopathological examination. Biochemical iron metabolism parameters were also assessed. RESULTS The mean age at RYGB was 47 ± 10.2 years and 92.9% were female. The average time elapsed between RYGB and the second surgical procedure was 20.6 ± 15.4 months. The mean percentage of total weight loss between the two procedures was 26.7 ± 9.4%. Significant reductions in ferritin (220.8 ± 202.9 vs. 101.6 ± 116.7 ng/mL; p = 0.006), hemoglobin (13.7 ± 1.8 vs. 12.1 ± 2.6 g/dL; p = 0.01), and red blood cell count (4.7 ± 0.7 vs. 4.3 ± 0.5 106/mm3; p = 0.003) were observed, as well as reductions in the frequencies of steatosis (83.3% vs. 23.8%; p < 0.0001) and steatohepatitis (52.4% vs. 11.9%; p < 0.0001). The frequency of hepatic iron overload significantly decreased from 16.7 to 2.4% (p = 0.03). CONCLUSION RYGB led to a significant decrease in hepatic iron overload, emerging as a possible therapeutical tool for this condition in individuals with obesity and dysmetabolic iron overload syndrome.

Abstract
PURPOSE Excess iron is involved in the development of non-communicable diseases such as cancer, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular conditions. We aimed to describe the prevalence of excess iron and its determinants in healthy European adults. METHODS Sociodemographic, lifestyle, iron status, dietary information, and HFE genotyping were obtained from controls from the nested case-control study EPIC-EurGast study. High sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) was measured to address possible systemic inflammation. Descriptive and multivariate analyses were used to assess iron status and its determinants. RESULTS Out of the 828 participants (median age: 58.7 years), 43% were females. Median serum ferritin and prevalence of excess iron were 143.7 µg/L and 35.2% in males, respectively, and 77 µg/L and 20% in females, both increasing with latitude across Europe. Prevalence of HFE C282Y mutation was significantly higher in Northern and Central Europe (~ 11%) than in the South (5%). Overweight/obesity, age, and daily alcohol and heme iron intake were independent determinants for iron status, with sex differences even after excluding participants with hsCRP > 5 mg/L. Obese males showed a greater consumption of alcohol, total and red meat, and heme iron, compared with those normal weight. CONCLUSION Obesity, higher alcohol and heme iron consumption were the main risk factors for excess iron in males while only age was associated with iron overload in females. Weight control and promoting healthy lifestyle may help prevent iron overload, especially in obese people. Further research is needed to clarify determinants of excess iron in the healthy adult population, helping to reduce the associated comorbidities.

Abstract
Obesity is associated with an increased risk of an iron deficiency; however, a synergistic relationship between iron and lipid homeostasis was also observed. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of pharmacological doses of iron supplementation on omega 3 (n-3) and omega 6 (n-6) polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were fed a normal diet or a 50% high-fat diet (HFD) without or with pharmacological doses of ferric citrate (0.25, 1, or 2 g ferric iron per kg diet) for 12 weeks, and erythrocyte profiles of n-3 and n-6 PUFAs were quantitated. Ferric citrate supplementation showed dose-related effects on liver inflammation, liver iron accumulation, and increasing circulating levels of iron, erythrocyte degradation biomarkers LVV-hemorphin-7, malondialdehyde (MDA), and insulin. Obese rats supplemented with 2 g ferric iron per kg diet also had decreased levels of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosapentaenoic acid (DPA), and total n-3 PUFAs compared to rats fed a normal diet or HFD alone. A western blotting analysis revealed that iron-mediated downregulation of n-3 PUFA-converting enzymes (Δ5 and Δ6 desaturases) only occurred at high dosages (≥1 g ferric iron per kg diet). A Spearman correlation analysis showed that total liver iron and serum LVV-hemorphin-7 and MDA were negatively correlated with n-3 PUFAs and their converting enzymes (Δ5 and Δ6 desaturases) (all p < 0.05). In conclusion, obese rats that received high-dose ferric citrate supplementation (>1 g of ferric iron per kg diet) exhibited decreased n-3 PUFA levels via downregulation of expressions of Δ5 and Δ6 desaturase enzymes.

Abstract
Tightly regulated iron metabolism prevents oxidative stress. Hepcidin is a hormone that regulates iron flow in plasma; its production is induced by an iron overload and by inflammation. It inhibits iron entry into the circulation by blocking dietary absorption in the duodenum, the release of recycled iron from macrophages and the exit of stored iron from hepatocytes. Varied signals responding to iron stores, erythropoietic activity and host defense converge to regulate hepcidin production and thereby affect iron homeostasis. Although it is known that hepcidin increases when interleukin 6 (IL-6) increases, the relationship between hepcidin, dyslipidemia, insulin resistance (IR) and visceral adiposity index (VAI) in adolescents with obesity is unclear. In this cross-sectional study of 29 obese adolescents and 30 control subjects, we explored the difference of hepcidin, iron metabolism markers and IL-6 between obese and non-obese adolescents, and identified associations with inflammation, atherogenic dyslipidemia and IR. As compared to lean controls, obese participants showed 67% higher hepcidin: 14,070.8 ± 7213.5 vs. 8419.1 ± 4826.1 pg/mLc; 70% higher ferritin: 94.4 ± 82.4 vs. 55.1 ± 39.6 pg/mLa and 120% higher IL-6: 2.0 (1.1–4.9) vs. 0.9 (0.5–1.3) pg/mLd. Transferrin, soluble transferrin receptor and total body iron (as measured by sTFR/ferritin, log10 sTFR/ferritin ratio and sTFR/log ferritin ratios) were not different between the two cohorts. In the whole cohort, hepcidin correlated with VAI (r = 0.29a), sd-LDL (r = 0.31b), HOMA-IR (r = 0.29a) and IL-6 (r = 0.35c). In obese adolescents hepcidin correlated with TG (r = 0.47b), VLDL-C (r = 0.43b) and smaller LDL2 (r = 0.39a). Hepcidin elevation in adolescents with obesity is linked more to inflammation and metabolic alterations than to iron metabolism since the other markers of iron metabolism were not different between groups, except for ferritin. Studies addressing the long-term effects of higher hepcidin levels and their impact on subclinical anemia and iron status are warranted. a p < 0.05; b p < 0.01, c p < 0.001 dp < 0.0001.

Abstract
The significant worldwide increase in obesity has become a major health problem. Excess adiposity has been extensively linked to inflammation. Recently, studies have shown that dietary intake and microbiota dysbiosis can affect the health of the gut and lead to low-grade systemic inflammation, worsening the state of obesity and further exacerbating inflammation. The latter is shown to decrease iron status and potentially increase the risk of anemia by inhibiting iron absorption. Hence, anemia of obesity is independent of iron intake and does not properly respond to increased iron ingestion. Therefore, countries with a high rate of obesity should assess the health impact of fortification and supplementation with iron due to their potential drawbacks. This review tries to elucidate the relation between inflammation and iron status to better understand the etiology of anemia of obesity and chronic diseases and wisely design any dietary or medical interventions for the management of anemia and/or obesity.

Abstract
Introduction Ferritin has been implicated in body physiology and pathology. Smoking cigarettes (Cg) alters ferritin metabolism. Waterpipe (Wp) smoking has recently reemerged as a global epidemic and is linked to the most devastating diseases. However, the effect of smoking Wp on ferritin is not known. Therefore, the current study compared plasma ferritin in adolescents smoking Cg, Wp, both (CgWp) versus never smoked. Material and methods Self-reported smoking status and plasma ferritin levels were obtained from 849 boys (n = 470) and girls (n = 379) in the 7th-10th grade (age range = 13-17 years). Results The ANCOVA revealed a main effect for gender (p < 0.000) and smoking status (p < 0.02) without an interaction effect (p > 0.9). Post-hoc analysis showed greater plasma ferritin in the adolescents smoking Wp (p < 0.03) and CgWp (p < 0.004) versus never smoked. Gender-stratified ANCOVA showed a main effect for smoking status in the boys (p < 0.02) and girls (p < 0.03). Additional comparisons among the boys showed greater plasma ferritin in the Wp (p < 0.006) and CgWp (p < 0.008) smoking groups versus never smoking, without differences (p > 0.5) between Wp and CgWp smoking. Another subgroup comparison showed greater plasma ferritin in the girls smoking Cg (p < 0.02) and CgWp (p < 0.02) versus never smoking, without a difference (p > 0.3) between Cg and CgWp smoking. Conclusions The results indicate that ferritin is elevated in adolescent smokers, particularly the boys smoking Wp and CgWp and in the girls smoking Cg and CgWp.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The role of genetic determinants in mediating iron status in Africans is not fully understood. Genome-wide association studies in non-African populations have revealed genetic variants in the transmembrane protease serine 6 gene (TMPRSS6) that are associated with the risk of anemia. OBJECTIVES To investigate the effects of risk alleles for low iron status, namely TMPRSS6 rs2235321, rs855791, and rs4820268, on responses to oral iron in healthy Gambian adults. METHODS Using a recall-by-genotype design, participants were selected from a pregenotype cohort of 3000 individuals in the Keneba Biobank (Medical Research Council Unit The Gambia at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine). Participants were invited to participate in the study based on 9 genotype combinations obtained from 3 TMPRSS6 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs): rs2235321, rs855791, and rs4820268. The participants fasted overnight and then ingested a single oral dose of ferrous sulfate (130 mg elemental iron). Blood samples were collected prior to iron ingestion and at 2 and 5 h after the oral iron dose. The effects of genotype on hepcidin and plasma iron parameters were assessed. RESULTS A total of 251 individuals were enrolled. Homozygous carriers of the major TMPRSS6 alleles at each of the SNPs had higher plasma hepcidin at baseline (rs2235321: GG compared with AA = 9.50 compared with 6.60 ng/ml, P = 0.035; rs855791: GG compared with AG = 9.50 compared with 4.96 ng/mL, P = 0.015; rs4820268: AA compared with GG = 9.50 compared with 3.27 ng/mL, P = 0.002) and at subsequent timepoints. In most subjects, hepcidin concentrations increased following iron ingestion (overall group mean = 4.98 ± 0.98 ng/mL at 5 h, P < 0.001), but double heterozygotes at rs2235321 and rs855791 showed no increase (0.36 ± 0.40 ng/mL at 5 h, P = 0.667). CONCLUSIONS This study revealed that common TMPRSS6 variants influence hepcidin concentrations, but not iron status indicators either at baseline or following a large oral dose of iron. These results suggest that genetic variations in the TMPRSS6 gene are unlikely to be important contributors to variations in iron status in Africans.This study was registered at clinicaltrials.gov (# NCT03341338).

Abstract
Background Iron deficiency is widely recognized as being the cause of anemia in athletes, although iron status in athletes of Kendo, a traditional Japanese martial art based on swordsmanship and practiced as an educational sport, has not been widely investigated. Methods We performed a health assessment on anemia and serum ferritin levels, along with nutrient intake evaluation, for Kendo practitioners in a university in Japan. Results A total of 56 Kendo practitioners (39 male and 17 female) aged between 18 and 23 years participated in the study. No individuals exhibited WHO-defined anemia (less than 13 or 12 g/dL of hemoglobin levels in male or female), while hypoferritinemia (less than 30 ng/mL) was found in seven (41%) females but not in males. Significantly higher body mass index was found in the female athletes with hypoferritinemia compared to females with normo-ferritinemia in sub-analysis (median [interquartile range]; 25.6 [24.2, 26.9] versus 22.6 [21.7, 24.1], respectively. p < 0.05). No significant differences in the intake of iron were registered between males and females (with and without hypoferritinemia) using data from a food-frequency questionnaire survey. Conclusion No apparent anemia was found in adolescent Kendo practitioners, although this study confirmed the presence of hypoferritinemia in several female athletes. Careful follow-up, involving both clinical and nutritional assessment, will be necessary for them to prevent progression into anemia. A future study with larger cohorts in multiple sites is warranted to assess the prevalence of iron deficiency for validation and, if necessary, to devise a strategy for improving the iron status in Kendo athletes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The prevalence of iron deficiency in the Lebanese pediatric population is unknown. The aim of this study is to estimate this prevalence in Lebanese schoolchildren and to assess the relation between iron status and related factors. SUBJECTS/METHODS A total of 903 children aged 8-18 years (466 boys and 437 girls) were included in the study. Recruitment was done from ten schools with different SES levels and located in the Great Beirut and Mount Lebanon areas. Serum ferritin was measured in all participants and testosterone was measured only in boys using Immulite chemiluminescent assays. RESULTS For the entire sample, the median serum ferritin concentration was 30.0 [19.8-44.8] ng/mL and the prevalence of iron deficiency (ferritin < 15 ng/mL) was 14.2%. Iron deficiency was higher in girls compared with boys (respectively, 20.8% and 7.9%). This prevalence varied with the SES (respectively, 11.6%, 11.9%, and 16.8% in high, middle, and low SES, p = 0.09). Iron deficiency increased with age (9.5%, 15.7%, and 17.5%, respectively, for the age groups 8-11, 12-14, and 15-18, p = 0.014) and did not differ between normal, overweight, and obese groups (p = 0.07). In boys, a significant positive correlation was observed between ferritin and total testosterone (rho = 0.150, p = 0.001). CONCLUSION The prevalence of iron deficiency is relatively low in Lebanon. Younger boys, menstruating girls, and children from low SES are more prone to iron deficiency, while BMI has no impact.

Abstract
Preventing and treating iron deficiency are important components in the nutritional care of female varsity athletes, as these interventions may improve aerobic endurance and athletic performance. We examined the factors associated with ferritin concentration in 30 female varsity athletes (18-30 years) at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. Biochemical indicators of iron and inflammation status, dietary intake, supplementation practices, weight, height, and menstrual blood losses were assessed. Iron deficiency prevalence was 20% (n = 6/30; inflammation-adjusted ferritin <15 μg/L). Multiple linear regression was used to assess the associations of a number of independent explanatory variables with log-transformed serum ferritin (μg/L) as the continuous outcome variable. A 1-unit increase in body mass index (BMI; kg/m2) was associated with 22% (95% CI: 9%-37%) higher mean ferritin concentrations, and a 1-point increase in menstrual loss score was associated with 1% (95% CI: 1%-2%) lower ferritin concentrations. Hemoglobin and hepcidin concentrations, inflammation biomarkers, consumption of iron supplements in any form or dose for ≥3 days/week, and age were not significantly associated with ferritin concentrations in the final adjusted model. Novelty Estimated monthly menstrual losses and BMI were associated with serum ferritin concentrations in female athletes in our study. These are easy-to-measure, noninvasive measurements that should be considered in the assessment of risk of iron deficiency in female athletes.
