Valence oscillation and dynamic active sites in monolayer NiCo hydroxides for water oxidation

Selective Activation of Lattice Oxygen Site Through Coordination Engineering to Boost the Activity and Stability of Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Although Ru-based materials are among the outstanding catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), the instability issue still haunts them and impedes the widespread application. The instability of Ru-based OER catalysts is generally ascribed to the formation of soluble species through the over-oxidation of Ru and structural decomposition caused by involvement of lattice oxygen. Herein, an effective strategy of selectively activating the lattice oxygen around Ru site is proposed to improve the OER activity and stability. Our synthesized spinel-type electrocatalyst of Ru and Zn co-doped Co3O4 showed an ultralow overpotential of 172 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and a long-term stability reaching to 100 hours at 10 mA cm-2 for alkaline OER. The experimental results and theoretical simulations demonstrated that the lattice oxygen site jointly connected with the octahedral Ru and tetrahedral Zn atoms became more active than other oxygen sites near Ru atom, which further lowered the reaction energy barriers and avoided generating excessive oxygen vacancies to enhance the structural stability of Ru sites. The findings hope to provide a new perspective to improve the catalytic activity of Ru-incorporated OER catalysts and the stability of lattice-oxygen-mediated mechanism.

Probing the structural evolution of cobalt hydroxide in electrochemical water splitting

Transition-metal hydroxides are a category of earth-abundant and stable electrocatalysts for energy storage and conversion devices involving sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Understanding dynamic evolution at the solid/liquid interface of transition-metal hydroxides is crucial for the rational design of high-performance OER electrocatalysts. This study implemented in situ electrochemical atomic force microscopy (EC-AFM) to directly image the dynamic structural evolution of α-Co(OH)2 platelets during the electrochemical OER. Reconstruction of α-Co(OH)2, accompanied by ion insertion from the electrolyte, results in a volume expansion, which can be well confirmed from the X-ray diffraction patterns. Our findings are important for the fundamental understanding of transition-metal hydroxide oxygen-evolution catalysts, illustrating the dynamic nature of Co-based nanostructures under electrochemical conditions.

Electrolyte-Assisted Structure Reconstruction Optimization of Sn-Zn Hybrid Oxide Boosts the Electrochemical CO2-to-HCOO- Conversion

Electrolyte plays crucial roles in electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (e-CO2RR), yet how it affects the e-CO2RR performance still being unclarified. In this work, it is reported that Sn-Zn hybrid oxide enables excellent CO2-to-HCOO- conversion in KHCO3 with a HCOO- Faraday efficiency ≈89%, a yield rate ≈0.58 mmol cm-2 h-1 and a stability up to ≈60 h at -0.93 V, which are higher than those in NaHCO3 and K2SO4. Systematical characterizations unveil that the surface reconstruction on Sn-Zn greatly depends on the electrolyte using: the Sn-SnO2/ZnO, the ZnO encapsulated Sn-SnO2/ZnO and the Sn-SnO2/Zn-ZnO are reconstructed on the surface by KHCO3, NaHCO3 and K2SO4, respectively. The improved CO2-to-HCOO- performance in KHCO3 is highly attributed to the reconstructed Sn-SnO2/ZnO, which can enhance the charge transportation, promote the CO2 adsorption and optimize the adsorption configuration, accumulate the protons by enhancing water adsorption/cleavage and limit the hydrogen evolution. The findings may provide insightful understanding on the relationship between electrolyte and surface reconstruction in e-CO2RR and guide the design of novel electrocatalyst for effective CO2 reduction.

Co-doped NiFe carbonate hydroxide hydrate nanosheets with edge effect constructed from spent lithium-ion battery ternary cathodes for oxygen evolution reaction

The recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) has received increasing attention for environment and resource reclamation. Converting LIBs wastes into high-efficiency catalysts is a win-win strategy for realizing resource reclamation and addressing sustainable energy challenges. Herein, we developed a simple method to upcycle spent-LIBs cathode powder into Co-doped NiFe carbonate hydroxide hydrate (Co/NFCH-FF) as a low-cost and efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalyst. The optimized Co/NFCH-FF electrode appears very competitive OER performances with low overpotentials of 201 and 249 mV at 10 and 100 mA cm-2, respectively, a small Tafel slope of 48.4 mV dec-1, and a high long-term stability. Moreover, we reveal that the existence of Co atoms leads to the formation of a crystalline/amorphous (c/a) interface at the Co/NFCH nanosheet edge, inducing the nanosheets possess a unique edge effect to enhance electric fields and accumulate hydroxide ions (OH-) at the edge during the OER process. Benefiting from edge effect, Co/NFCH-FF shows outstanding intrinsic activity. Furthermore, Co atoms as dopants stabilize the electronic structure of Co/NFCH-FF, enabling Co/NFCH-FF to exhibit excellent catalytic stability. This work provides an effective strategy for converting the end-life LIBs to high-performance multicomponent OER electrocatalysts and proposes new insights into the mechanism of enhanced catalytic activity of Co/NFCH.

Se vacancies and interface engineering modulated bifunctionality prussian blue analogue derivatives for overall water splitting

It is a challenging task to design and synthesize stable, and high-performance non-precious metals bifunctional catalysts for water-splitting. Herein, the coupling between Se vacancy and interface engineering is highlighted to synthesize a unique CoFeSe hollow nanocubes structure on MXene-modified nickel foam (NF) by in-situ phase transition from bifunctionality prussian blue analogue (PBA) derivatives (VSe-CoFeSe@MXene/NF). DFT theory reveals that the Se vacancy and interface engineering modulate the surface electronic structure and optimize the surface adsorption energy of the intermediates. Experimental data also confirm that the as-prepared CoFeSe@MF catalyst exhibits advanced electrocatalytic properties, 283 mV (OER) and 67 mV (HER) are required to drive the current density of 10 mA cm-2. Notably, it is assembled into a two-electrode system for integral water decomposition, which only requires a low cell potential of 1.57 V at current of 10 mA cm-2, together with excellent durability for 48 h. The strategy is expected to provide a new direction for the design and construction of highly efficient collaborative integrated water decomposition electrocatalysts.

Tuning Iron Active Sites of FeOOH via Al3+ and Heteroatom Doping-Induced Asymmetric Oxygen Vacancy Electronic Structure for Efficient Alkaline Water Splitting

Oxygen evolution reaction is the essential anodic reaction for water splitting. Designing tunable electronic structures to overcome its slow kinetics is an effective strategy. Herein, the molecular ammonium iron sulfate dodecahydrate is employed as the precursor to synthesize the C, N, S triatomic co-doped Fe(Al)OOH on Ni foam (C,N,S-Fe(Al)OOH-NF) with asymmetric electronic structure. Both in situ oxygen vacancies and their special electronic configuration enable the electron transfer between the d-p orbitals and get the increase of OER activity. Density functional theory calculation further indicates the effect of electronic structure on catalytic activity and stability at the oxygen vacancies. In alkaline solution, the catalyst C,N,S-Fe(Al)OOH-NF shows good catalytic activity and stability for water splitting. For OER, the overpotential of 10 mA cm-2 is 264 mV, the tafel slope is 46.4 mV dec-1, the HER overpotential of 10 mA cm-2 is 188 mV, the tafel slope is 59.3 mV dec-1. The stability of the catalyst can maintain ≈100 h. This work has extraordinary implications for understanding the mechanistic relationship between electronic structure and catalytic activity for designing friendly metal (oxy)hydroxide catalysts.

Ceria-Optimized Oxygen-Species Exchange in Hierarchical Bimetallic Hydroxide for Electrocatalytic Water Oxidation

The utilization of rare earth elements to regulate the interaction between catalysts and oxygen-containing species holds promising prospects in the field of oxygen electrocatalysis. Through structural engineering and adsorption regulation, it is possible to achieve high-performance catalytic sites with a broken activity-stability tradeoff. Herein, this work fabricates a hierarchical CeO2/NiCo hydroxide for electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER). This material exhibits superior overpotentials and enhanced stability. Multiple potential-dependent experiments reveal that CeO2 promotes oxygen-species exchange, especially OH- ions, between catalyst and environment, thereby optimizing the redox transformation of hydroxide and the adsorption of oxygen-containing intermediates during OER. This is attributed to the reduction in the adsorption energy barrier of Ni to *OH facilitated by CeO2, particularly the near-interfacial Ni sites. The less-damaging adsorbate evolution mechanism and the CeO2 hierarchical shell significantly enhance the structural robustness, leading to exceptional stability. Additionally, the observed "self-healing" phenomenon provides further substantiation for the accelerated oxygen exchange. This work provides a neat strategy for the synthesis of ceria-based complex hollow electrocatalysts, as well as an in-depth insight into the co-catalytic role of CeO2 in terms of oxygen transfer.

Advances in Noble Metal Electrocatalysts for Acidic Oxygen Evolution Reaction: Construction of Under-Coordinated Active Sites

Renewable energy-driven proton exchange membrane water electrolyzer (PEMWE) attracts widespread attention as a zero-emission and sustainable technology. Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts with sluggish OER kinetics and rapid deactivation are major obstacles to the widespread commercialization of PEMWE. To date, although various advanced electrocatalysts have been reported to enhance acidic OER performance, Ru/Ir-based nanomaterials remain the most promising catalysts for PEMWE applications. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop efficient, stable, and cost-effective Ru/Ir catalysts. Since the structure-performance relationship is one of the most important tools for studying the reaction mechanism and constructing the optimal catalytic system. In this review, the recent research progress from the construction of unsaturated sites to gain a deeper understanding of the reaction and deactivation mechanism of catalysts is summarized. First, a general understanding of OER reaction mechanism, catalyst dissolution mechanism, and active site structure is provided. Then, advances in the design and synthesis of advanced acidic OER catalysts are reviewed in terms of the classification of unsaturated active site design, i.e., alloy, core-shell, single-atom, and framework structures. Finally, challenges and perspectives are presented for the future development of OER catalysts and renewable energy technologies for hydrogen production.

Simultaneous Interface Engineering and Phase Tuning of CeO2-Decorated Catalysts for Boosted Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Heterogeneous catalysts have attracted extensive attention among various emerging catalysts for their exceptional oxygen evolution reaction (OER) capabilities, outperforming their single-component counterparts. Nonetheless, the synthesis of heterogeneous materials with predictable, precise, and facile control remains a formidable challenge. Herein, a novel strategy involving the decoration of catalysts with CeO2 is introduced to concurrently engineer heterogeneous interfaces and adjust phase composition, thereby enhancing OER performance. Theoretical calculations suggest that the presence of ceria reduces the free energy barrier for the conversion of nitrides into metals. Supporting this, the experimental findings reveal that the incorporation of rare earth oxides enables the controlled phase transition from nitride into metal, with the proportion adjustable by varying the amount of added rare earth. Thanks to the role of CeO2 decoration in promoting the reaction kinetics and fostering the formation of the genuine active phase, the optimized Ni3FeN/Ni3Fe/CeO2-5% nanoparticles heterostructure catalyst exhibits outstanding OER activity, achieving an overpotential of just 249 mV at 10 mA cm-2. This approach offers fresh perspectives for the conception of highly efficient heterogeneous OER catalysts, contributing a strategic avenue for advanced catalytic design in the field of energy conversion.

Electron Accumulation Induced by Electron Injection-Incomplete Discharge on NiFe LDH for Enhanced Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Optimizing the local electronic structure of electrocatalysts can effectively lower the energy barrier of electrochemical reactions, thus enhancing the electrocatalytic activity. However, the intrinsic contribution of the electronic effect is still experimentally unclear. In this work, the electron injection-incomplete discharge approach to achieve the electron accumulation (EA) degree on the nickel-iron layered double hydroxide (NiFe LDH) is proposed, to reveal the intrinsic contribution of EA toward oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Such NiFe LDH with EA effect results in only 262 mV overpotential to reach 50 mA cm-2, which is 51 mV-lower compared with pristine NiFe LDH (313 mV), and reduced Tafel slope of 54.8 mV dec-1 than NiFe LDH (107.5 mV dec-1). Spectroscopy characterizations combined with theoretical calculations confirm that the EA near concomitant Vo can induce a narrower energy gap and lower thermodynamic barrier to enhance OER performance. This study clarifies the mechanism of the EA effect on OER activity, providing a direct electronic structure modulation guideline for effective electrocatalyst design.

Pristine MOF Materials for Separator Application in Lithium-Sulfur Battery

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries have attracted significant attention in the realm of electronic energy storage and conversion owing to their remarkable theoretical energy density and cost-effectiveness. However, Li-S batteries continue to face significant challenges, primarily the severe polysulfides shuttle effect and sluggish sulfur redox kinetics, which are inherent obstacles to their practical application. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), known for their porous structure, high adsorption capacity, structural flexibility, and easy synthesis, have emerged as ideal materials for separator modification. Efficient polysulfides interception/conversion ability and rapid lithium-ion conduction enabled by MOFs modified layers are demonstrated in Li-S batteries. In this perspective, the objective is to present an overview of recent advancements in utilizing pristine MOF materials as modification layers for separators in Li-S batteries. The mechanisms behind the enhanced electrochemical performance resulting from each design strategy are explained. The viewpoints and crucial challenges requiring resolution are also concluded for pristine MOFs separator in Li-S batteries. Moreover, some promising materials and concepts based on MOFs are proposed to enhance electrochemical performance and investigate polysulfides adsorption/conversion mechanisms. These efforts are expected to contribute to the future advancement of MOFs in advanced Li-S batteries.

Manipulation of Oxidation States on Phase Boundary via Surface Layer Modification for Enhanced Alkaline Hydrogen Electrocatalysis

In alkaline water electrolysis and anion exchange membrane water electrolysis technologies, the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) at the cathode is significantly constrained by a high energy barrier during the water dissociation step. This study employs a phase engineering strategy to construct heterostructures composed of crystalline Ni4W and amorphous WOx aiming to enhance catalytic performance in the HER under alkaline conditions. This work systematically modulates the oxidation states of W within the amorphous WOx of the heterostructure to adjust the electronic states of the phase boundary, the energy barriers associated with the water dissociation step, and the adsorption/desorption properties of intermediates during the alkaline HER process. The optimized catalyst, Ni4W/WOx-2, with a quasi-metallic state of W coordinated by a low oxygen content in amorphous WOx, demonstrates exceptional catalytic performance (22 mV@10 mA cm-2), outperforming commercial Pt/C (30 mV@10 mA cm-2). Furthermore, the operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy analysis and theoretical calculations reveal that the optimized W atoms in amorphous WOx serve as active sites for water dissociation and the nearby Ni atoms in crystalline Ni4W facilitated the release of H2. These findings provide valuable insights into designing efficient heterostructured materials for energy conversion.

High-Valence Cu Induced by Photoelectric Reconstruction for Dynamically Stable Oxygen Evolution Sites

Oxygen vacancies are generally considered to play a crucial role in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, the generation of active sites created by oxygen vacancies is inevitably restricted by their condensation and elimination reactions. To overcome this limitation, here, we demonstrate a novel photoelectric reconstruction strategy to incorporate atomically dispersed Cu into ultrathin (about 2-3 molecular) amorphous oxyhydroxide (a-CuM, M = Co, Ni, Fe, or Zn), facilitating deprotonation of the reconstructed oxyhydroxide to generate high-valence Cu. The in situ XAFS results and first-principles calculations reveal that Cu atoms are stabilized at high valence during the OER process due to Jahn-Teller distortion, resulting in para-type double oxygen vacancies as dynamically stable catalytic sites. The optimal a-CuCo catalyst exhibits a record-high mass activity of 3404.7 A g-1 at an overpotential of 300 mV, superior to the benchmarking hydroxide and oxide catalysts. The developed photoelectric reconstruction strategy opens up a new pathway to construct in situ stable oxygen vacancies by high-valence Cu single sites, which extends the design rules for creating dynamically stable active sites.

Ligand-Hybridization Activates Lattice-Hydroxyl-Groups of NiCo(OH)x Nanowires for Efficient Electrosynthesis

Electrochemical dehydrogenation of hydroxides plays a crucial role in the formation of high-valence metal active sites toward 5-hydroxymethylfurfural oxidation reaction (HMFOR) to produce the value-added chemical of 2,5-furandicarboxylic (FDCA). Herein, we construct benzoic acid ligand-hybridized NiCo(OH)x nanowires (BZ-NiCo(OH)x) with ample electron-deficient Ni/Co sites for HMFOR. The robust electron-withdrawing capability of benzoic acid ligands in BZ-NiCo(OH)x speeds up the electrochemical activation and dehydrogenation of lattice-hydroxyl-groups (M2+-O-H⇌M3+-O), boosting the formation of abundant electron-deficient and high-valence Ni/Co sites. DFT calculation reveals that the deintercalation proton is prone to establishing a hydrogen bridge with the carbonyl group in benzoic acid, facilitating the proton transfer. Coupled with the synergistic oxidation of Ni/Co sites on hydroxyl and aldehyde groups, BZ-NiCo(OH)x delivers a remarkable current density of 111.20 mA cm-2 at 1.4 V for HMFOR, exceeding that of NiCo(OH)x by approximately fourfold. And the FDCA yield and Faraday efficiency are as high as 95.24 % and 95.39 %, respectively. The ligand-hybridized strategy in this work introduces a novel perspective for designing high-performance transition metal-based electrocatalysts for biomass conversion.

Operando-reconstructed polyatomic ion layers boost the activity and stability of industrial current-density water splitting

Metal-organic frameworks have garnered attention as highly efficient pre-electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Current structure-activity relationships primarily rely on the assumption that the complete dissolution of organic ligands occurs during electrocatalysis. Herein, modeling based on NiFe Prussian blue analogs (NiFe-PBAs) show that cyanide ligands leach from the matrix and subsequently oxidize to corresponding inorganic ions (ammonium and carbonate) that re-adsorb onto the surface of NiFe OOH during the OER process. Interestingly, the surface-adsorbed inorganic ions induce the OER reaction of NiFe OOH to switch from the adsorbate evolution to the lattice-oxygen-mediated mechanism, thus contributing to the high activity. In addition, this reconstructed inorganic ion layer acting as a versatile protective layer can prevent the dissolution of metal sites to maintain contact between catalytic sites and reactive ions, thus breaking the activity-stability trade-off. Consequently, our constructed NiFe-PBAs exhibit excellent durability for 1250 h with an ultralow overpotential of 253 mV at 100 mA cm-2. The scale-up NiFe-PBAs operated with a low energy consumption of ∼4.18 kWh m-3 H2 in industrial water electrolysis equipment. F Doping-Induced Multicomponent Synergistic Active Site Construction toward High-Efficiency Bifunctional Oxygen Electrocatalysis for Rechargeable Zn-Air Batteries

The commercialization of rechargeable Zn-air batteries (ZABs) relies on the material innovation to accelerate the sluggish oxygen electrocatalysis kinetics. Due to the differentiated mechanisms of reverse processes, i.e., oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), rationally integrating dual sites for bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysis is prerequisite yet remains challenging. Herein, multicomponent synergistic active sites within highly graphitic carbon substrate are exquisitely constructed, which is accomplished by fluorine (F) modulation strategy. The incorporation of F dopants facilitates pyridinic N formation for anchoring single metal sites, thus guaranteeing the coexistence of sufficient M-Nx sites and metal nanoparticles toward bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysis. As a result, the optimal catalyst, denoted as F NH2-FeNi-800, outperforms commercial Pt/C+RuO2 with smaller gap between Ej = 10 and E1/2 (ΔE) of 0.63 V (vs 0.7 V for Pt/C+RuO2), demonstrating its superior bifunctionality. Beyond that, its superiority is validated in homemade rechargeable ZABs. ZABs assembled using F NH2-FeNi-800 as the air cathode delivers higher peak power density (123.8 mW cm-2) and long-cycle lifetime (over 660 cycles) in comparison with Pt/C@RuO2 (68.8 mW cm-2; 300 cycles). The finding not only affords a highly promising oxygen electrocatalyst, but also opens an avenue to constructing multifunctional active sites for heterogeneous catalysts.

Concentrated solar CO2 reduction in H2O vapour with >1% energy conversion efficiency

H2O dissociation plays a crucial role in solar-driven catalytic CO2 methanation, demanding high temperature even for solar-to-chemical conversion efficiencies <1% with modest product selectivity. Herein, we report an oxygen-vacancy (Vo) rich CeO2 catalyst with single-atom Ni anchored around its surface Vo sites by replacing Ce atoms to promote H2O dissociation and achieve effective photothermal CO2 reduction under concentrated light irradiation. The high photon flux reduces the apparent activation energy for CH4 production and prevents Vo from depletion. The defects coordinated with single-atom Ni, significantly promote the capture of charges and local phonons at the Ni d-impurity orbitals, thereby inducing more effective H2O activation. The catalyst presents a CH4 yield of 192.75 µmol/cm2/h, with a solar-to-chemical efficiency of 1.14% and a selectivity ~100%. The mechanistic insights uncovered in this study should help further the development of H2O-activating catalysts for CO2 reduction and thereby expedite the practical utilization of solar-to-chemical technologies.

Achieving Negatively Charged Pt Single Atoms on Amorphous Ni(OH)2 Nanosheets with Promoted Hydrogen Absorption in Hydrogen Evolution

Single-atom (SA) catalysts with nearly 100% atom utilization have been widely employed in electrolysis for decades, due to the outperforming catalytic activity and selectivity. However, most of the reported SA catalysts are fixed through the strong bonding between the dispersed single metallic atoms with nonmetallic atoms of the substrates, which greatly limits the controllable regulation of electrocatalytic activity of SA catalysts. In this work, Pt-Ni bonded Pt SA catalyst with adjustable electronic states was successfully constructed through a controllable electrochemical reduction on the coordination unsaturated amorphous Ni(OH)2 nanosheet arrays. Based on the X-ray absorption fine structure analysis and first-principles calculations, Pt SA was bonded with Ni sites of amorphous Ni(OH)2, rather than conventional O sites, resulting in negatively charged Ptδ-. In situ Raman spectroscopy revealed that the changed configuration and electronic states greatly enhanced absorbability for activated hydrogen atoms, which were the essential intermediate for alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction. The hydrogen spillover process was revealed from amorphous Ni(OH)2 that effectively cleave the H-O-H bond of H2O and produce H atom to the Pt SA sites, leading to a low overpotential of 48 mV in alkaline electrolyte at -1000 mA cm-2 mg-1Pt, evidently better than commercial Pt/C catalysts. This work provided new strategy for the controllable modulation of the local structure of SA catalysts and the systematic regulation of the electronic states.

Ultrathin NiV Layered Double Hydroxide for Methanol Electrooxidation: Understanding the Proton Detachment Kinetics and Methanol Dehydrogenation Oxidation

Electrochemical methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) is regarded as a promising pathway to obtain value-added chemicals and drive cathodic H2 production, while the rational design of catalyst and in-depth understanding of the structure-activity relationship remains challenging. Herein, the ultrathin NiV-LDH (u-NiV-LDH) with abundant defects is successfully synthesized, and the defect-enriched structure is finely determined by X-ray adsorption fine structure etc. When applied for MOR, the as-prepared u-NiV-LDH presents a low potential of 1.41 V versus RHE at 100 mA cm-2, which is much lower than that of bulk NiV-LDH (1.75 V vs RHE) at the same current density. The yield of H2 and formate is 98.2% and 88.1% as its initial over five cycles and the ultrathin structure of u-NiV-LDH can be well maintained. Various operando experiments and theoretical calculations prove that the few-layer stacking structure makes u-NiV-LDH free from the interlayer hydrogen diffusion process and the hydrogen can be directly detached from LDH laminate. Moreover, the abundant surface defects upshift the d-band center of u-NiV-LDH and endow a higher local methanol concentration, resulting in an accelerated dehydrogenation kinetics on u-NiV-LDH. The synergy of the proton detachment from the laminate and the methanol dehydrogenation oxidation contributes to the excellent MOR performance of u-NiV-LDH.

Design of Superior Electrocatalysts for Proton-Exchange Membrane-Water Electrolyzers: Importance of Catalyst Stability and Evolution

By virtue of the high energy conversion efficiency and compact facility, proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) is a promising green hydrogen production technology ready for commercial applications. However, catalyst stability is a challenging but often-ignored topic for the electrocatalyst design, which retards the device applications of many newly-developed electrocatalysts. By defining catalyst stability as the function of activity versus time, we ascribe the stability issue to the evolution of catalysts or catalyst layers during the water electrolysis. We trace the instability sources of electrocatalysts as the function versus time for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in acid and classify them into internal and external sources. Accordingly, we summarize the latest studies for stability improvements into five strategies, i. e., thermodynamic stable active site construction, precatalyst design, support regulation, superwetting electrode fabrication, and catalyst-ionomer interface engineering. With the help of ex-situ/ in-situ characterizations and theoretical calculations, an in-depth understanding of the instability sources benefits the rational development of highly active and stable HER/OER electrocatalysts for PEMWE applications.

Oxygen vacancy chemistry in oxide cathodes

Secondary batteries are a core technology for clean energy storage and conversion systems, to reduce environmental pollution and alleviate the energy crisis. Oxide cathodes play a vital role in revolutionizing battery technology due to their high capacity and voltage for oxide-based batteries. However, oxygen vacancies (OVs) are an essential type of defect that exist predominantly in both the bulk and surface regions of transition metal (TM) oxide batteries, and have a crucial impact on battery performance. This paper reviews previous studies from the past few decades that have investigated the intrinsic and anionic redox-mediated OVs in the field of secondary batteries. We focus on discussing the formation and evolution of these OVs from both thermodynamic and kinetic perspectives, as well as their impact on the thermodynamic and kinetic properties of oxide cathodes. Finally, we offer insights into the utilization of OVs to enhance the energy density and lifespan of batteries. We expect that this review will advance our understanding of the role of OVs and subsequently boost the development of high-performance electrode materials for next-generation energy storage devices.

A restricted dynamic surface self-reconstruction toward high-performance of direct seawater oxidation

The development of highly efficient electrocatalysts for direct seawater splitting with bifunctionality for inhibiting anodic oxidation reconstruction and selective oxygen evolution reactions is a major challenge. Herein, we report a direct seawater oxidation electrocatalyst that achieves long-term stability for more than 1000 h at 600 mA/cm2@η600 and high selectivity (Faraday efficiency of 100%). This catalyst revolves an amorphous molybdenum oxide layer constructed on the beaded-like cobalt oxide interface by atomic layer deposition technology. As demonstrated, a new restricted dynamic surface self-reconstruction mechanism is induced by the formation a stable reconstructed Co-Mo double hydroxide phase interface layer. The device assembled into a two-electrode flow cell for direct overall seawater electrolysis maintained at 1 A/cm2@1.93 V for 500 h with Faraday efficiency higher than 95%. Hydrogen generation rate reaches 419.4 mL/cm2/h, and the power consumption (4.62 KWh/m3 H2) is lower than that of pure water (5.0 KWh/m3 H2) at industrial current density.

Spatially and Temporally Resolved Dynamic Response of Co-Based Composite Interface during the Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Interfacial interaction dictates the overall catalytic performance and catalytic behavior rules of the composite catalyst. However, understanding of interfacial active sites at the microscopic scale is still limited. Importantly, identifying the dynamic action mechanism of the "real" active site at the interface necessitates nanoscale, high spatial-time-resolved complementary-operando techniques. In this work, a Co3O4 homojunction with a well-defined interface effect is developed as a model system to explore the spatial-correlation dynamic response of the interface toward oxygen evolution reaction. Quasi in situ scanning transmission electron microscopy-electron energy-loss spectroscopy with high spatial resolution visually confirms the size characteristics of the interface effect in the spatial dimension, showing that the activation of active sites originates from strong interfacial electron interactions at a scale of 3 nm. Multiple time-resolved operando spectroscopy techniques explicitly capture dynamic changes in the adsorption behavior for key reaction intermediates. Combined with density functional theory calculations, we reveal that the dynamic adjustment of multiple adsorption configurations of intermediates by highly activated active sites at the interface facilitates the O-O coupling and *OOH deprotonation processes. The dual dynamic regulation mechanism accelerates the kinetics of oxygen evolution and serves as a pivotal factor in promoting the oxygen evolution activity of the composite structure. The resulting composite catalyst (Co-B@Co3O4/Co3O4 NSs) exhibits an approximately 70-fold turnover frequency and 20-fold mass activity than the monomer structure (Co3O4 NSs) and leads to significant activity (η10 ∼257 mV). The visual complementary analysis of multimodal operando/in situ techniques provides us with a powerful platform to advance our fundamental understanding of interfacial structure-activity relationships in composite structured catalysts.

Amorphous-crystalline RuTi nanosheets enhancing OH species adsorption for efficient hydrogen oxidation catalysis

Anion exchange membrane fuel cells are a potentially cost-effective energy conversion technology, however, the electrocatalyst for the anodic hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) suffers from sluggish kinetics under alkaline conditions. Herein, we report that Ru-based nanosheets with amorphous-crystalline heterointerfaces of Ru and Ti-doped RuO2 (a/c-Ru/Ti-RuO2) can serve as a highly efficient HOR catalyst with a mass activity of 4.16 A mgRu-1, which is 19.8-fold higher than that of commercial Pt/C. Detailed characterization studies show that abundant amorphous-crystalline heterointerfaces of a/c-Ru/Ti-RuO2 nanosheets provide oxygen vacancies and unsaturated coordination bonds for balancing adsorption of hydrogen and hydroxyl species on Ru active sites to elevate HOR activity. Moreover, Ti doping can facilitate CO oxidation, leading to enhanced strength to CO poisoning. This work provides a strategy for enhancing alkaline HOR performance over Ru-based catalysts with heteroatom and heterointerface dual-engineering, which will attract immediate interest in chemistry, materials science and beyond.

Circumventing the Theoretical Scaling Relation Limit for the Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Transition metal hydr(oxy)oxides (TMHs) are considered efficient electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) under alkaline conditions. Toward identification of potential descriptors to circumvent the scaling relation limit for the OER, first-principles calculations were used to quantify the effects on the overpotential of different s (Mg), p (Al), and d (Ti, V, Cr, Fe, Co, Sc, and Zn) electron dopants in Ni-based TMHs. Both the adsorbate evolution mechanism (AEM) and the lattice oxygen-mediated mechanism (LOM) were examined. The results demonstrate that the formation energy of oxygen vacancies (EVO) is strongly affected by the chemical nature of the dopants. A linear relationship is identified between EVO and the free energy difference for the oxygen-oxygen coupling. A descriptor could be employed to discriminate whether the LOM is energetically favored over the AEM. These findings fill existing gaps in appropriate yet computationally light descriptors for direct identification between the AEM and LOM.

Modulating Electronic Structure by Etching Strategy to Construct NiSe2 /Ni0.85 Se Heterostructure for Urea-Assisted Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Exploring and developing novel strategies for constructing heterostructure electrocatalysts is still challenging for water electrolysis. Herein, a creative etching treatment strategy is adopted to construct NiSe2 /Ni0.85 Se heterostructure. The rich heterointerfaces between NiSe2 and Ni0.85 Se emerge strong electronic interaction, which easily induces the electron transfer from NiSe2 to Ni0.85 Se, and tunes the charge-state of NiSe2 and Ni0.85 Se. In the NiSe2 /Ni0.85 Se heterojunction nanomaterial, the higher charge-state Ni0.85 Se is capable of affording partial electrons to combine with hydrogen protons, inducing the rapid formation of H2 molecule. Accordingly, the lower charge-state NiSe2 in the NiSe2 /Ni0.85 Se heterojunction nanomaterial is more easily oxidized into high valence state Ni3+ during the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) process, which is beneficial to accelerate the mass/charge transfer and enhance the electrocatalytic activities towards OER. Theoretical calculations indicate that the heterointerfaces are conducive to modulating the electronic structure and optimizing the adsorption energy toward intermediate H* during the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) process, leading to superior electrocatalytic activities. To expand the application of the NiSe2 /Ni0.85 Se-2h electrocatalyst, urea is served as the adjuvant to proceed with the energy-saving hydrogen production and pollutant degradation, and it is proven to be a brilliant strategy.

Controlled Growth of Metal Atom Arrays on Graphdiyne for Seawater Oxidation

Advanced atomic-level heterointerface engineering provides a promising method for the preparation of next-generation catalysts. Traditional carbon-based heterointerface catalytic performance rely heavily on the undetermined defects in complex and demanding preparation processes, rendering it impossible to control the catalytic performance. Here, we present a general method for the controlled growth of metal atom arrays on graphdiyne (GDY/IrCuOx), and we are surprised to find strong heterointerface strains during the growth. We successfully controlled the thickness of GDY to regulate the heterointerface metal atoms and achieved compressive strain at the interface. Experimental and density functional theory calculation results show that the unique incomplete charge transfer between GDY and metal atoms leads to the formation of strong interactions and significant heterointerface compressive strain between GDY and IrCuOx, which results in high oxidation performances with 1000 mA cm-2 at a low overpotential of 283 mV and long-term stability at large current densities in alkaline simulated seawater. We anticipate that this finding will contribute to construction of high-performance heterogeneous interface structures, leading to the development of new generation of GDY-based heterojunction catalysts in the field of catalysis for future promising performance.

Trivalent Nickel-Catalyzing Electroconversion of Alcohols to Carboxylic Acids

The comprehension of activity and selectivity origins of the electrooxidation of organics is a crucial knot for the development of a highly efficient energy conversion system that can produce value-added chemicals on both the anode and cathode. Here, we find that the potential-retaining trivalent nickel in NiOOH (Fermi level, -7.4 eV) is capable of selectively oxidizing various primary alcohols to carboxylic acids through a nucleophilic attack and nonredox electron transfer process. This nonredox trivalent nickel is highly efficient in oxidizing primary alcohols (methanol, ethanol, propanol, butanol, and benzyl alcohol) that are equipped with the appropriate highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) levels (-7.1 to -6.5 eV vs vacuum level) and the negative dual local softness values (Δsk, -0.50 to -0.19) of nucleophilic atoms in nucleophilic hydroxyl functional groups. However, the carboxylic acid products exhibit a deeper HOMO level (<-7.4 eV) or a positive Δsk, suggesting that they are highly stable and weakly nucleophilic on NiOOH. The combination (HOMO, Δsk) is useful in explaining the activity and selectivity origins of electrochemically oxidizing alcohols to carboxylic acid. Our findings are valuable in creating efficient energy conversions to generate value-added chemicals on dual electrodes.

Enhancing Low-Potential Electrosynthesis of 2,5-Furandicarboxylic Acid on Monolithic CuO by Constructing Oxygen Vacancies

Electrosynthesis of 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) from the biomass-derived 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is one of the most potential means to produce a bioplastic monomer. Copper oxide (CuO) catalyst shows promising prospects due to its high surface activity, conductivity, and stability, but relatively poor capability of oxygen evolution; however, the weak adsorption of substrates and the lack of facile synthetic strategies largely restrict its practical application. Here, a novel facile in situ method, alternate cycle voltammetry (denoted as c) and potentiostatic electrolysis (denoted as p), was proposed to prepare a monolithic cpc-CuO/Cu-foam electrocatalyst. Along with the increment of CuO and its surficial oxygen vacancies (OV), the FDCA yield, productivity, and Faradaic efficiency can reach up to ∼98.5%, ∼0.2 mmol/cm2, and ∼94.5% under low potential of 1.404 VRHE. Such an efficient electrosynthesis system can be easily scaled up to afford pure FDCA powders. In a combinatory analysis via electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, H2 temperature-programmed reduction, open circuit potential, infrared spectroscopy, zeta potential, electrochemical measurement, and theoretical calculation, we found that the CuO was the active phase and OV generated on CuO surface can dramatically enhance the adsorption of *HMF and *OH (* denotes an active site), accounting for its superior FDCA production. This work offers an excellent paradigm for enhancing biomass valorization on CuO catalysts by constructing surficial defects.

Manipulating the Microenvironment of Single Atoms by Switching Support Crystallinity for Industrial Hydrogen Evolution

Modulating the microenvironment of single-atom catalysts (SACs) is critical to optimizing catalytic activity. Herein, we innovatively propose a strategy to improve the local reaction environment of Ru single atoms by precisely switching the crystallinity of the support from high crystalline and low crystalline, which significantly improves the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity. The Ru single-atom catalyst anchored on low-crystalline nickel hydroxide (Ru-LC-Ni(OH)2 ) reconstructs the distribution balance of the interfacial ions due to the activation effect of metal dangling bonds on the support. Single-site Ru with a low oxidation state induces the aggregation of hydronium ions (H3 O+ ), leading to the formation of a local acidic microenvironment in alkaline media, breaking the pH-dependent HER activity. As a comparison, the Ru single-atom catalyst anchored on high-crystalline nickel hydroxide (Ru-HC-Ni(OH)2 ) exhibits a sluggish Volmer step and a conventional local reaction environment. As expected, Ru-LC-Ni(OH)2 requires low overpotentials of 9 and 136 mV at 10 and 1000 mA cm-2 in alkaline conditions and operates stably at 500 mA cm-2 for 500 h in an alkaline seawater anion exchange membrane (AEM) electrolyzer. This study provides a new perspective for constructing highly active single-atom electrocatalysts.

Achieving High-Performance Electrocatalytic Water Oxidation on Ni(OH)2 with Optimized Intermediate Binding Energy Enabled by S-Doping and CeO2 -Interfacing

The adsorption energy of the reaction intermediates has a crucial influence on the electrocatalytic activity. Ni-based materials possess high oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance in alkaline, however too strong binding of *OH and high energy barrier of the rate-determining step (RDS) severely limit their OER activity. Herein, a facile strategy is shown to fabricate novel vertical nanorod-like arrays hybrid structure with the interface contact of S-doped Ni(OH)2 and CeO2 in situ grown on Ni foam (S-Ni(OH)2 /CeO2 /NF) through a one-pot route. The alcohol molecules oxidation reaction experiments and theoretical calculations demonstrate that S-doping and CeO2 -interfacing significantly modulate the binding energies of OER intermediates toward optimal value and reduce the energy barrier of the RDS, contributing to remarkable OER activity for S-Ni(OH)2 /CeO2 /NF with an ultralow overpotential of 196 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and long-term durability over 150 h for the OER. This work offers an efficient doping and interfacing strategy to tune the binding energy of the OER intermediates for obtaining high-performance electrocatalysts.

Understanding the Origin of Reconstruction in Transition Metal Oxide Oxygen Evolution Reaction Electrocatalysts

Electrochemical water splitting to generate hydrogen energy fills a gap in the intermittency issues for wind and sunlight power. Transition metal (TM) oxides have attracted significant interest in water oxidation due to their availability and excellent activity. Typically, the transitional metal oxyhydroxides species derived from these metal oxides are often acknowledged as the real catalytic species, due to the irreversible structural reconstruction. Hence, in order to innovatively design new catalyst, it is necessary to provide a comprehensive understanding for the origin of surface reconstruction. In this review, the most recent developments in the reconstruction of transition metal-based oxygen evolution reaction electrocatalysts were introduced, and various chemical driving forces behind the reconstruction mechanism were discussed. At the same time, specific strategies for modulating pre-catalysts to achieve controllable reconfiguration, such as metal substituting, increase of structural defect sites, were summarized. At last, the issues for the further understanding and optimization of transition metal oxides compositions based on structural reconstruction were provided.

Directional Electrosynthesis of Adipic Acid and Cyclohexanone by Controlling the Active Sites on NiOOH

Dicarboxylic acids and cyclic ketones, such as adipic acid (AA) and cyclohexanone (CHN), are essential compounds for the chemical industry. Although their production by electrosynthesis using electricity is considered one of the most promising strategies, the application of such processes has been hampered by a lack of efficient catalysts as well as a lack of understanding of the mechanism. Herein, a series of monolithic msig/ea-NiOOH-Ni(OH)2/NF were prepared by means of self-dissolution of metal matrix components, interface growth, and electrochemical activation (denoted as msig/ea). The as-synthesized catalysts have three-dimensional cuboid-like structures formed by interconnecting nanosheets composed of NiOOH. By theoretically guided regulation of the amounts of Ni3+ and oxygen vacancies (OV), a 96.5% yield of CHN from cyclohexanol (CHA) dehydrogenation and a 93.6% yield of AA from CHN oxidation were achieved. A combined experimental and theoretical study demonstrates that CHA dehydrogenation and CHN oxidation were promoted by the formation of Ni3+ and the peroxide species (*OOH) on OV. This work provides a promising approach for directional electrosynthesis of high-purity chemicals with in-depth mechanistic insights.

Site-specific metal-support interaction to switch the activity of Ir single atoms for oxygen evolution reaction

The metal-support interactions (MSI) could greatly determine the electronic properties of single-atom catalysts, thus affecting the catalytic performance. However, the typical approach to regulating MSI usually suffers from interference of the variation of supports or sacrificing the stability of catalysts. Here, we effectively regulate the site-specific MSI of Ir single atoms anchored on Ni layered double hydroxide through an electrochemical deposition strategy. Cathodic deposition drives Ir atoms to locate at three-fold facial center cubic hollow sites with strong MSI, while anodic deposition drives Ir atoms to deposit onto oxygen vacancy sites with weak MSI. The mass activity and intrinsic activity of Ir single-atom catalysts with strong MSI towards oxygen evolution reaction are 19.5 and 5.2 times that with weak MSI, respectively. Mechanism study reveals that the strong MSI between Ir atoms and the support stimulates the activity of Ir sites by inducing the switch of active sites from Ni sites to Ir sites and optimizes the adsorption strength of intermediates, thereby enhancing the activity.

Atomic Distance Engineering in Metal Catalysts to Regulate Catalytic Performance

It is very important to understand the structure-performance relationship of metal catalysts by adjusting the microstructure of catalysts at the atomic scale. The atomic distance has an essential influence on the composition of the environment of active metal atom, which is a key factor for the design of targeted catalysts with desired function. In this review, we discuss and summarize strategies for changing the atomic distance from three aspects and relate their effects on the reactivity of catalysts. First, the effects of regulating bond length between metal and coordination atom at one single-atom site on the catalytic performance are introduced. The bond lengths are affected by the strain effect of the support and high-shell doping and can evolve during the reaction. Next, the influence of the distance between single-atom sites on the catalytic performance is discussed. Due to the space matching of adsorption and electron transport, the catalytic performance can be adjusted with the shortening of site distance. In addition, the effect of the arrangement spacing of the surface metal active atoms on the catalytic performance of metal nanocatalysts is studied. Finally, a comprehensive summary and outlook of the relationship between atomic distance and catalytic performance is given.

Ambient γ-Rays-Mediated Noble-Metal Deposition on Defect-Rich Manganese Oxide for Glycerol-Assisted H2 Evolution at Industrial-Level Current Density

Developing novel synthesis technologies is crucial to expanding bifunctional electrocatalysts for energy-saving hydrogen production. Herein, we report an ambient and controllable γ-ray radiation reduction to synthesize a series of noble metal nanoparticles anchored on defect-rich manganese oxides (M@MnO2-x , M=Ru, Pt, Pd, Ir) for glycerol-assisted H2 evolution. Benefiting from the strong penetrability of γ-rays, nanoparticles and defect supports are formed simultaneously and bridged by metal-oxygen bonds, guaranteeing structural stability and active site exposure. The special Ru-O-Mn bonds activate the Ru and Mn sites in Ru@MnO2-x through strong interfacial coordination, driving glycerol electrolysis at low overpotential. Furthermore, only a low cell voltage of 1.68 V is required to achieve 0.5 A cm-2 in a continuous-flow electrolyzer system along with excellent stability. In situ spectroscopic analysis reveals that the strong interfacial coordination in Ru@MnO2-x balances the competitive adsorption of glycerol and OH* on the catalyst surface. Theoretical calculations further demonstrate that the defect-rich MnO2 support promotes the dissociation of H2 O, while the defect-regulated Ru sites promote deprotonation and hydrogen desorption, synergistically enhancing glycerol-assisted hydrogen production.

Fe-doping and oxygen vacancy achieved by electrochemical activation and precipitation/dissolution equilibrium in NiOOH for oxygen evolution reaction

The poor conductivities and instabilities of accessible nickel oxyhydroxides hinder their use as oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts. Herein, we constructed Fe-NiOOH-OV-600, an Fe-doped nickel oxide hydroxide with abundant oxygen vacancies supported on nickel foam (NF), using a hydrothermal method and an electrochemical activation strategy involving 600 cycles of cyclic voltammetry, assisted by the precipitation/dissolution equilibrium of ferrous sulfide (FeS) in the electrolyte. This two-step method endows the catalyst with abundant Fe-containing active sites while maintaining the ordered structure of nickel oxide hydroxide (NiOOH). Characterization and density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that synergy between trace amounts of the Fe dopant and the oxygen vacancies not only promotes the generation of reconstructed active layers but also optimizes the electronic structure and adsorption capacity of the active sites. Consequently, the as-prepared Fe-NiOOH-OV-600 delivered large current densities of 100 and 1000 mA cm-2 for the OER at overpotentials of only 253 and 333 mV in 1 mol/L KOH. Moreover, the catalyst is stable for at least 100 h at 500 mA cm-2. This work provides insight into the design of efficient transition-metal-based electrocatalysts for the OER.

Unraveling the potential-dependent structure evolution in CuO for electrocatalytic biomass valorization

Electrocatalytic oxidation of renewable biomass (such as glucose) into high-value-added chemicals provides an effective approach to achieving carbon neutrality. CuO-derived materials are among the most promising electrocatalysts for biomass electrooxidation, but the identification of their active sites under electrochemical conditions remains elusive. Herein, we report a potential-dependent structure evolution over CuO in the glucose oxidation reaction (GOR). Through systematic electrochemical and spectroscopic characterizations, we unveil that CuO undergoes Cu2+/Cu+ and Cu3+/Cu2+ redox processes at increased potentials with successive generation of Cu(OH)2 and CuOOH as the active phases. In addition, these two structures have distinct activities in the GOR, with Cu(OH)2 being favorable for aldehyde oxidation, and CuOOH showed faster kinetics in carbon-carbon cleavage and alcohol/aldehyde oxidation. This work deepens our understanding of the dynamic reconstruction of Cu-based catalysts under electrochemical conditions and may guide rational material design for biomass valorization.

Nonredox trivalent nickel catalyzing nucleophilic electrooxidation of organics

A thorough comprehension of the mechanism behind organic electrooxidation is crucial for the development of efficient energy conversion technology. Here, we find that trivalent nickel is capable of oxidizing organics through a nucleophilic attack and electron transfer via a nonredox process. This nonredox trivalent nickel exhibits exceptional kinetic efficiency in oxidizing organics that possess the highest occupied molecular orbital energy levels ranging from -7.4 to -6 eV (vs. Vacuum level) and the dual local softness values of nucleophilic atoms in nucleophilic functional groups, such as hydroxyls (methanol, ethanol, benzyl alcohol), carbonyls (formamide, urea, formaldehyde, glucose, and N-acetyl glucosamine), and aminos (benzylamine), ranging from -0.65 to -0.15. The rapid electrooxidation kinetics can be attributed to the isoenergetic channels created by the nucleophilic attack and the nonredox electron transfer via the unoccupied eg orbitals of trivalent nickel (t2g6eg1). Our findings are valuable in identifying kinetically fast organic electrooxidation on nonredox catalysts for efficient energy conversions.

Modulating metal-support interaction and inducing electron-rich environment of Ni2P NPs by B atoms incorporation for enhanced hydrogen evolution reaction performance

Modulation of the electronic interaction between the metal and support has been verified as a feasible strategy to improve the electrocatalytic performance of supported-type catalysts. Here, we have successfully synthesized an electrocatalyst of Ni2P nanoparticles (NPs) anchored on B, N co-doped graphite-like carbon nanosheets (Ni2P@B, N-GC), and elucidated the main mechanism by which B atoms doping enhances electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance. The B atoms with electron-rich characteristic not only modulate the electronic structure on carbon skeleton, but also regulate the interfacial electronic interaction between Ni2P NPs and the carbon skeleton, which can lead to the increased available electron density of Ni sites. Such optimization is conducive to accelerating proton transfer and promoting reactive activity. As revealed, the Ni2P@B, N-GC catalyst with B atoms doping exhibits superior performance to the Ni2P@N-GC catalyst in acidic, neutral and alkaline medias. In addition, the assembled Ni(OH)2@B, N-GC||Ni2P@B, N-GC electrolyzer displays prominent overall water splitting performance in alkaline solution, which only demands 1.57 V to reach 10 mA/cm2, and in complicated natural seawater electrolyte, as low as 1.59 V. Hence, the B atoms doping strategy shows the significant enhancement for HER electrocatalysis.

Defective blue titanium oxide induces high valence of NiFe-(oxy)hydroxides over heterogeneous interfaces towards high OER catalytic activity

Nickel-iron (oxy)hydroxides (NiFeOxHy) have been validated to speed up sluggish kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) but still lack satisfactory substrates to support them. Here, non-stoichiometric blue titanium oxide (B-TiOx) was directly derived from Ti metal by alkaline anodization and used as a substrate for electrodeposition of amorphous NiFeOxHy (NiFe/B-TiOx). The performed X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations evidenced that there is a charge transfer between B-TiOx and NiFeOxHy, which gives rise to an elevated valence at the Ni sites (average oxidation state ∼ 2.37). The synthesized NiFe/B-TiOx delivers a current density of 10 mA cm-2 and 100 mA cm-2 at an overpotential of 227 mV and 268 mV, respectively, which are better than that of pure Ti and stainless steel. It also shows outstanding activity and stability under industrial conditions of 6 M KOH. The post-OER characterization studies revealed that the surface morphology and valence states have no significant change after 24 h of operation at 500 mA cm-2, and also can effectively inhibit the leaching of Fe. We illustrate that surface modification of Ti which has high corrosion resistance and mechanical strength, to generate strong interactions with NiFeOxHy is a simple and effective strategy to improve the OER activity and stability of non-precious metal electrodes.

Lattice tensile strain cobalt phosphate with modulated hydroxide adsorption and structure transformation towards improved oxygen evolution reaction

The adsorption energy of oxygen-containing intermediates for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts plays a key role on their electrocatalytic performances. Rational optimization and regulation of the binding energy of intermediates can effectively improve the catalytic activities. Herein, the binding strength of Co phosphate to *OH was weakened by generating lattice tensile strain via Mn replacement, which modulated the electronic structure and optimized the reactive intermediates adsorption with active sites. The tensile-strained lattice structure and stretched interatomic distance were confirmed by X-ray diffraction and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectra measurements. The as-obtained Mn-doped Co phosphate exhibits excellent OER activity with an overpotential of 335 mV at 10 mA cm-2, which is much higher than pristine Co phosphate. In-situ Raman spectra and methanol oxidation reaction experiments demonstrated that Mn-doped Co phosphate with lattice tensile strain shows optimized *OH adsorption strength, and is favorable to structure reconstruction and form highly active Co oxyhydroxide intermediate during OER process. Our work provides insight into the effects of the lattice strain on the OER activity from the standpoint of intermediate adsorption and structure transformation.

Pd Loaded NiCo Hydroxides for Biomass Electrooxidation: Understanding the Synergistic Effect of Proton Deintercalation and Adsorption Kinetics

The key issue in the 5-hydroxymethylfurfural oxidation reaction (HMFOR) is to understand the synergistic mechanism involving the protons deintercalation of catalyst and the adsorption of the substrate. In this study, a Pd/NiCo catalyst was fabricated by modifying Pd clusters onto a Co-doped Ni(OH)2 support, in which the introduction of Co induced lattice distortion and optimized the energy band structure of Ni sites, while the Pd clusters with an average size of 1.96 nm exhibited electronic interactions with NiCo support, resulting in electron transfer from Pd to Ni sites. The resulting Pd/NiCo exhibited low onset potential of 1.32 V and achieved a current density of 50 mA/cm2 at only 1.38 V. Compared to unmodified Ni(OH)2 , the Pd/NiCo achieved an 8.3-fold increase in peak current density. DFT calculations and in situ XAFS revealed that the Co sites affected the conformation and band structure of neighboring Ni sites through CoO6 octahedral distortion, reducing the proton deintercalation potential of Pd/NiCo and promoting the production of Ni3+ -O active species accordingly. The involvement of Pd decreased the electronic transfer impedance, and thereby accelerated Ni3+ -O formation. Moreover, the Pd clusters enhanced the adsorption of HMF through orbital hybridization, kinetically promoting the contact and reaction of HMF with Ni3+ -O.

Ferromagnetic ordering correlated strong metal-oxygen hybridization for superior oxygen reduction reaction activity

The efficiency of transition-metal oxide materials toward oxygen-related electrochemical reactions is classically controlled by metal-oxygen hybridization. Recently, the unique magnetic exchange interactions in transition-metal oxides are proposed to facilitate charge transfer and reduce activation barrier in electrochemical reactions. Such spin/magnetism-related effects offer a new and rich playground to engineer oxide electrocatalysts, but their connection with the classical metal-oxygen hybridization theory remains an open question. Here, using the MnxVyOz family as a platform, we show that ferromagnetic (FM) ordering is intrinsically correlated with the strong manganese (Mn)-oxygen (O) hybridization of Mn oxides, thus significantly increasing the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity. We demonstrate that this enhanced Mn-O hybridization in FM Mn oxides is closely associated with the generation of active Mn sites on the oxide surface and obtaining favorable reaction thermodynamics under operating conditions. As a result, FM-Mn2V2O7 with a high degree of Mn-O hybridization achieves a record high ORR activity. Our work highlights the potential applications of magnetic oxide materials with strong metal-oxygen hybridization in energy devices.

How Amorphous Nanomaterials Enhanced Electrocatalytic, SERS, and Mechanical Properties

There is ever-growing research interest in nanomaterials because of the unique properties that emerge on the nanometer scale. While crystalline nanomaterials have received a surge of attention for exhibiting state-of-the-art properties in various fields, their amorphous counterparts have also attracted attention in recent years owing to their unique structural features that crystalline materials lack. In short, amorphous nanomaterials only have short-range order at the atomic scale, and their atomic packing lacks long-range periodic arrangement, in which the coordinatively unsaturated environment, isotropic atomic structure, and modulated electron state all contribute to their outstanding performance in various applications. Given their intriguing characteristics, we herein present a series of representative works to elaborate on the structural advantages of amorphous nanomaterials as well as their enhanced electrocatalytic, surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), and mechanical properties, thereby elucidating the underlying structure-function relationship. We hope that this proposed relationship will be universally applicable, thus encouraging future work in the design of amorphous materials that show promising performance in a wide range of fields.

Accelerated Multi-step Sulfur Redox Reactions in Lithium-Sulfur Batteries Enabled by Dual Defects in Metal-Organic Framework-based Catalysts

The sluggish sulfur redox kinetics and shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) are recognized as the main obstacles to the practical applications of the lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. Accelerated conversion by catalysis can mitigate these issues, leading to enhanced Li-S performance. However, a catalyst with single active site cannot simultaneously accelerate multiple LiPSs conversion. Herein, we developed a novel dual-defect (missing linker and missing cluster defects) metal-organic framework (MOF) as a new type of catalyst to achieve synergistic catalysis for the multi-step conversion reaction of LiPSs. Electrochemical tests and first-principle density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that different defects can realize targeted acceleration of stepwise reaction kinetics for LiPSs. Specifically, the missing linker defects can selectively accelerate the conversion of S8 →Li2 S4 , while the missing cluster defects can catalyze the reaction of Li2 S4 →Li2 S, so as to effectively inhibit the shuttle effect. Hence, the Li-S battery with an electrolyte to sulfur (E/S) ratio of 8.9 mL g-1 delivers a capacity of 1087 mAh g-1 at 0.2 C after 100 cycles. Even at high sulfur loading of 12.9 mg cm-2 and E/S=3.9 mL g-1 , an areal capacity of 10.4 mAh cm-2 for 45 cycles can still be obtained.

Reversely Trapping Isolated Atoms in High Oxidation State for Accelerating the Oxygen Evolution Reaction Kinetics

Developing efficient electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is paramount to the energy conversion and storage devices. However, the structural complexity of heterogeneous electrocatalysts makes it a great challenge to elucidate the dynamic structural evolution and OER mechanisms. Here, we develop a controllable atom-trapping strategy to extract isolated Mo atom from the amorphous MoOx -decorated CoSe2 (a-MoOx @CoSe2 ) pre-catalyst into Co-based oxyhydroxide (Mo-CoOOH) through an ultra-fast self-reconstruction process during the OER process. This conceptual advance has been validated by operando characterizations, which reveals that the initially rapid Mo leaching can expedite the dynamic reconstruction of pre-catalyst, and simultaneously trap Mo species in high oxidation state into the lattice of in situ generated CoOOH support. Impressively, the OER kinetics of CoOOH has been greatly accelerated after the reverse decoration of Mo species, in which the Mo-CoOOH affords a markedly decreased overpotential of 297 mV at the current density of 100 mA cm-2 . Density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate that the Co species have been greatly activated via the effective electron coupling with Mo species in high oxidation state. These findings open new avenues toward directly synthesizing atomically dispersed electrocatalysts for high-efficiency water splitting.

Rapid Energy Exchange between In Situ Formed Bromine Vacancies and CO2 Molecules Enhances CO2 Photoreduction

Photocatalytic reduction of CO2 into fuels provides a prospective tactic for regulating the global carbon balance utilizing renewable solar energy. However, CO2 molecules are difficult to activate and reduce due to the thermodynamic stability and chemical inertness. In this work, we develop a novel strategy to promote the adsorption and activation of CO2 molecules via the rapid energy exchange between the photoinduced Br vacancies and CO2 molecules. Combining in situ continuous wave-electron paramagnetic resonance (cw-EPR) and pulsed EPR technologies, we observe that the spin-spin relaxation time (T2) of BiOBr is decreased by 198 ns during the CO2 photoreduction reaction, which is further confirmed by the broadened EPR linewidth. This result reveals that there is an energy exchange interaction between in situ formed Br vacancies and CO2 molecules, which promotes the formation of high-energy CO2 molecules to facilitate the subsequent reduction reaction. In addition, theoretical calculations indicate that the bended CO2 adsorption configuration on the surface of BiOBr with Br vacancies caused the decrease of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital of the CO2 molecule, which makes it easier for CO2 molecules to acquire electrons and get activated. In situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy further shows that the activated CO2 molecules are favorably converted to key intermediates of COOH*, resulting in a CO generation rate of 9.1 μmol g-1 h-1 and a selectivity of 100%. This study elucidates the underlying mechanism of CO2 activation at active sites and deepens the understanding of CO2 photoreduction reaction.

Application of Oxygen-Group-Based Amorphous Nanomaterials in Electrocatalytic Water Splitting

Environmentally friendly energy sources (e.g., hydrogen) require an urgent development targeting to address the problem of energy scarcity. Electrocatalytic water splitting is being explored as a convenient catalytic reaction in this context, and promising amorphous nanomaterials (ANMs) are receiving increasing attention due to their excellent catalytic properties.Oxygen group-based amorphous nanomaterials (O-ANMs) are an important component of the broad family of ANMs due to their unique amorphous structure, large number of defects, and abundant randomly oriented bonds, O-ANMs induce the generation of a larger number of active sites, which favors a better catalytic activity. Meanwhile, amorphous materials can disrupt the inherent features of conventional crystalline materials regarding electron transfer paths, resulting in higher flexibility. O-ANMs mainly include VIA elements such as oxygen, sulfur, selenium, tellurium, and other transition metals, most of which are reported to be free of noble metals and have comparable performance to commercial catalysts Pt/C or IrO2 and RuO2 in electrocatalysis. This review covers the features and reaction mechanism of O-ANMs, the synthesis strategies to prepare O-ANMs, as well as the application of O-ANMs in electrocatalytic water splitting. Last, the challenges and prospective remarks for future development in O-ANMs for electrocatalytic water splitting are concluded.

Modulating Electronic Structure of PtCo-Ptrich Nanowires with Ru atoms for Boosted Hydrogen Evolution Catalysis

Rational design and development of highly efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts is of great significance for the development of green water electrolysis hydrogen production technology. Ru-engineered 1D PtCo-Ptrich nanowires (Ru-Ptrich Co NWs) are fabricated by a facile electrodeposition method. The rich Pt surface on 1D Pt3 Co contributes to the fully exposed active sites and enhanced intrinsic catalytic activity (co-engineered by Ru and Co atoms) for HER. The incorporation of Ru atoms can not only accelerate the water dissociation in alkaline condition to provide sufficient H* but also modulate the electronic structure of Pt to achieve optimized H* adsorption energy. As a result, Ru-Ptrich Co NWs have exhibited ultralow HER overpotentials (η) of 8 and 112 mV to achieve current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm-2 in 1 m KOH, respectively, which far exceed those of commercial Pt/C catalyst (η10  = 29 mV, η100  = 206 mV). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further demonstrate that the incorporated Ru atoms possess strong water adsorption capacity (-0.52 vs -0.12 eV for Pt), facilitating water dissociation. The Pt atoms in the outermost Pt-rich skin of Ru-Ptrich Co NWs achieve optimized H* adsorption free energy (ΔGH* ) of -0.08 eV, boosting hydrogen generation.
