A review of electrolyte materials and compositions for electrochemical supercapacitors

Form-stable, crosslinked cellulose-based paper separators for charge storage applications

In the quest for greener and more efficient energy storage solutions, the exploration and utilization of renewable raw materials is essential. In this context, cellulose-derived separators play a central role in enhancing the performance of green energy storage devices. However, these often exhibit disadvantageous porosity and limited wet strength. Here, we demonstrate a facile approach to tailor thickness (ca. 40 μm), air permeability (0.1-200 cm3 s-1), and mechanical properties of separators by integration of up to 50 wt% microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) into paper sheets. While the MFC enhanced the formation of dense networks, these separators show a poor dimensional stability (folding and creasing) concomitant with a low strength under wet conditions, crucial for assembly and operation. Crosslinking with 1,2,3,4-butanetetracarboxylic acid (BTCA) however, led to an increase in wet strength by up to 6700 % while ensuring dimensional stability. The electrochemical performance, evaluated by impedance spectroscopy and galvanostatic cycling (7500 repetitions) showed comparable results as commercially available glass and polypropylene separators in terms of ion diffusion, charge-discharge rate performance, Ohmic loss and capacitance retention %. The approach demonstrates that disadvantages of paper-based separators in terms of dimensional stability and wet strength can be overcome by a paper technological approach using crosslinking strategies.

Conversion of high moisture biomass to hierarchical porous carbon via molten base carbonisation and activation for electrochemical double layer capacitor

Biomass-derived carbon for supercapacitors faces the challenge of achieving hierarchical porous carbon with graphitic structure and specific heteroatoms through a single-stage thermal process that minimises resource input. Herein, molten base carbonisation and activation is proposed. The process utilises the inherent moisture of Moso bamboo shoots, coupled with a low amount of KOH, to form potassium organic salts before drying. The resultant potassium salts promote in-situ activation during single-stage heating process, yielding hierarchical porous, large specific surface area, and partially graphitised carbon with heteroatoms (N, O). As an electrode material, this carbon exhibits a specific capacitance of 327F g-1 in 6 M KOH and 182F g-1 in 1 M TEABF4/AN, demonstrating excellent cycling stability over 10,000 cycles at 2 A/g. Overall, this study presents a straightforward process that avoids pre-drying of biomass, minimises base consumption, and employs single-stage heating to fabricate electrode carbon suitable for supercapacitors.

Bimetal-organic frameworks derived redox-type composite materials for high-performance energy storage

Electrodes and electroactive materials are crucial components in the development of supercapacitors due to their geometric properties. In this study, bimetal-organic frameworks (Bi-MOFs, ZIF-8@ZIF-67) were utilized as electrode materials for a high-performance hybrid supercapacitor (HSC) by designing a novel synthesis of metallic carbonate hydroxide/oxides. In particular, the Bi-MOFs function as a sacrificial precursor in the synthesis of hollow NiMn(CO3)0.5·0·.11H2O/ZnO@Co3O4 CNCs (NM-CH/ZnO@Co3O4 CNCs) cubic composite materials by a straightforward low-temperature treatment. The NM-CH/ZnO@Co3O4 CNCs exhibited exceptional electrochemical performance with high specific capacity of 196.3 ± 0.08 mAh/g, specific capacitance of 1179 ± 0.10 F g-1 at 0.5 A g-1, and outstanding cycling stability of 98% after 25,000 cycles compared to the other electrode materials. The porous and hollow structure, along with a large surface area, contributed to the enhanced electrochemical properties of the composite material. An HSC was constructed using NM-CH/ZnO@Co3O4 CNCs as the cathode and activated porous carbon (APC) as the anode, resulting in a device with a specific energy of 33 ± 0.12 Wh kg-1 and a power density of 19354 ± 0.07 W kg-1. The use of Bi-MOF electrodes presents new avenues for the development of high-performance energy storage materials, with the potential for industrial energy storage application demonstrated though the successful powering of portable lightbulbs.

Oxidative Phosphorylation Does Not Violate the Second Law of Thermodynamics

In a recent series of papers, James W. Lee reported that mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation violates the second law of thermodynamics and that it is allowed to do so because it is a "Type-B" process that features lateral and longitudinal membrane asymmetry. We show here that these contentions are based on problematic interpretations of the literature. More reliable values of ΔGredox and ΔGATP synthesis show that the second law is not violated. More recent reports on the structures of the redox-driven proton pumps (Complexes I, III, and IV) suggest that longitudinal membrane asymmetry does not exist. Finally, Lee's predictions for the concentration of protons localized at the P-side surface of the bioenergetic membrane are likely to be much too high due to several errors; thus, his predicted high values of ΔpHsurface that violate the second law are likely to be wrong. There is currently no strong experimental or theoretical evidence to support the contention that oxidative phosphorylation violates the second law of thermodynamics.

Applications of carbon quantum dots in electrochemical energy storage devices

Supercapacitors (SCs), including electric double-layer capacitors (EDLCs), pseudocapacitors, and hybrid capacitors, are esteemed for their high power density and attractive features such as robust safety, fast charging, low maintenance, and prolonged cycling lifespan, sparking significant interest. Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) are fluorescent nanomaterials with small size, broad excitation spectrum, stable fluorescence, and adjustable emission wavelengths. They are widely used in optoelectronics, medical diagnostics, and energy storage due to their biocompatibility, low toxicity, rich surface functional groups, abundant electron-hole pairs, large specific surface area, and tunable heteroatom doping. In this short review, we briefly discussed the advantages and disadvantages of bottom-up and top-down of CQD synthesis methods. The arc-discharge technique, laser ablation technique, plasma treatment, ultrasound synthesis technique, electrochemical technique, chemical exfoliation, and combustion are among the initial top-down approaches. The subsequent section delineates waste-derived and bottom-up methods, encompassing microwave synthesis, hydrothermal synthesis, thermal pyrolysis, and the metal-organic framework template-assisted technique. In addition, this short review focuses on the operational mechanism of supercapacitors, their properties, and the utilization of CQDs in supercapacitors.

Time evolution of the inner structure of antimony phosphate nanosheet suspension developing structural colouration

Structural colouration observed in antimony phosphate nanosheet suspensions has been known for two decades, but the stability of their inner structures has not been a topic in colloidal nanosheet systems. In this study, we investigate the time evolution of structures in suspension using UV-visible spectrometry and small-angle X-ray scattering. Here, we report that antimony phosphate nanosheet systems re-organise their inner structures, especially at lower concentrations (isotropic or biphasic region), and that the basal spacing decreases with time after sample preparation, although the evolution speed depends on the sample concentration. The stability of the inner structure of the suspension is essential for their application as structural colour materials in sensors and colourants.

GCMe: Efficient Implementation of the Gaussian Core Model with Smeared Electrostatic Interactions for Molecular Dynamics Simulations of Soft Matter Systems

In recent years, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations have emerged as an essential tool for understanding the structure, dynamics, and phase behavior of charged soft matter systems. To explore phenomena across greater length and time scales in MD simulations, molecules are often coarse-grained for better computational performance. However, commonly used force fields represent particles as hard-core interaction centers with point charges, which often overemphasizes the packing effect and short-range electrostatics, especially in systems with bulky deformable organic molecules and systems with strong coarse-graining. This underscores the need for an efficient soft-core model to physically capture the effective interactions between coarse-grained particles. To this end, we implement a soft-core model uniting the Gaussian core model with smeared electrostatic interactions that is phenomenologically equivalent to recent theoretical models. We first parametrize it generically using water as the model solvent. Then, we benchmark its performance in the OpenMM toolkit for different boundary conditions to highlight a computational speedup of up to 34 × compared to commonly used force fields and existing implementations. Finally, we demonstrate its utility by investigating how boundary polarizability affects the adsorption behavior of a polyelectrolyte solution on perfectly conducting and nonmetal boundaries.

Recent Development on Transition Metal Oxides-Based Core-Shell Structures for Boosted Energy Density Supercapacitors

In recent years, nanomaterials exploration and synthesis have played a crucial role in advancing energy storage research, particularly in supercapacitor development. Researchers have diversified materials, including metal oxides, chalcogenides, and composites, as well as carbon materials, to enhance energy and power density. Balancing energy density with electrochemical stability remains challenging, driving intensified efforts in advancing electrode materials. This review focuses on recent progress in designing and synthesizing core-shell materials tailored for supercapacitors. The core-shell architecture offers advantages such as increased surface area, redox active sites, electrical conductivity, ion diffusion kinetics, specific capacitance, and cyclability. The review explores the impact of core and shell materials, specifically transition metal oxides (TMOs), on supercapacitor electrochemical behavior. Metal oxide choices, such as cobalt oxide as a preferred core and manganese oxide as a shell, are discussed. The review also highlights characterization techniques for assessing structural, morphological, and electrochemical properties of core-shell materials. Overall, it provides a comprehensive overview of ongoing TMOs-based core-shell material research for supercapacitors, showcasing their potential to enhance energy storage for applications ranging from gadgets to electric vehicles. The review outlines existing challenges and future opportunities in evolving TMOs-based core-shell materials for supercapacitor advancements, holding promise for high-efficiency energy storage devices.

New Engineering Science Insights into the Electrode Materials Pairing of Electrochemical Energy Storage Devices

Pairing the positive and negative electrodes with their individual dynamic characteristics at a realistic cell level is essential to the practical optimal design of electrochemical energy storage devices. However, the complex relationship between the performance data measured for individual electrodes and the two-electrode cells used in practice often makes an optimal pairing experimentally challenging. Taking advantage of the developed tunable graphene-based electrodes with controllable structure, experiments with machine learning are successfully united to generate a large pool of capacitance data for graphene-based electrode materials with varied slit pore sizes, thicknesses, and charging rates and numerically pair them into different combinations for two-electrode cells. The results show that the optimal pairing parameters of positive and negative electrodes vary considerably with the operation rate of the cells and are even influenced by the thickness of inactive components. The best-performing individual electrode does not necessarily result in optimal cell-level performance. The machine learning-assisted pairing approach presents much higher efficiency compared with the traditional trial-and-error approach for the optimal design of supercapacitors. The new engineering science insights observed in this work enable the adoption of artificial intelligence techniques to efficiently translate well-developed high-performance individual electrode materials into real energy storage devices.

Powering the Future by Iron Sulfide Type Material (FexSy) Based Electrochemical Materials for Water Splitting and Energy Storage Applications: A Review

Water electrolysis is among the recent alternatives for generating clean fuels (hydrogen). It is an efficient way to produce pure hydrogen at a rapid pace with no unwanted by-products. Effective and cheap water-splitting electrocatalysts with enhanced activity, specificity, and stability are currently widely studied. In this regard, noble metal-free transition metal-based catalysts are of high interest. Iron sulfide (FeS) is one of the essential electrocatalysts for water splitting because of its unique structural and electrochemical features. This article discusses the significance of FeS and its nanocomposites as efficient electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER), hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), and overall water splitting. FeS and its nanocomposites have been studied also for energy storage in the form of electrode materials in supercapacitors and lithium- (LIBs) and sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). The structural and electrochemical characteristics of FeS and its nanocomposites, as well as the synthesis processes, are discussed in this work. This discussion correlates these features with the requirements for electrocatalysts in overall water splitting and its associated reactions. As a result, this study provides a road map for researchers seeking economically viable, environmentally friendly, and efficient electrochemical materials in the fields of green energy production and storage.

Ultrafast and Reversible Superwettability Switching of 3D Graphene Foams via Solvent-Exclusive Plasma Treatments

For highly active electron transfer and ion diffusion, controlling the surface wettability of electrically and thermally conductive 3D graphene foams (3D GFs) is required. Here, we present ultrasimple and rapid superwettability switching of 3D GFs in a reversible and reproducible manner, mediated by solvent-exclusive microwave arcs. As the 3D GFs are prepared with vapors of nonpolar acetone or polar water exclusively, short microwave radiation (≤10 s) leads to plasma hotspot-mediated production of methyl and hydroxyl radicals, respectively. Upon immediate radical chemisorption, the 3D surfaces become either superhydrophobic (water contact angle = ∼170°) or superhydrophilic (∼0°), and interestingly, the wettability transition can be repeated many times due to the facile exchange between previously chemisorbed and newly introduced radicals via the formation of methanol-like intermediates. When 3D GFs of different surficial polarities are incorporated into electric double-layer capacitors with nonpolar ionic liquids or polar aqueous electrolytes, the polarity matching between graphene surfaces and electrolytes results in ≥548.0 times higher capacitance compared to its mismatching at ≥0.5 A g-1, demonstrating the significance of wettability-controlled 3D GFs.

Straightforward preparation of a tough and stretchable ion gel

Ion gels, polymer networks swollen by ionic liquids, are expected to be applied to wearable devices that are tolerant to repeated stretching. High strength and excellent stretchability was achieved due to the numerous physical cross-links with abundant polymer chain entanglements in addition to a small number of immobile chemical cross-links, even though the ion gel was prepared by a facile methodology.

Molybdenum Sulfide Nanoflowers as Electrodes for Efficient and Scalable Lithium-Ion Capacitors

Hybrid supercapacitors (HSCs) bridge the unique advantages of batteries and capacitors and are considered promising energy storage devices for hybrid vehicles and other electronic gadgets. Lithium-ion capacitors (LICs) have attained particular interest due to their higher energy and power density than traditional supercapacitor devices. The limited voltage window and the deterioration of anode materials upsurged the demand for efficient and stable electrode materials. Two-dimensional (2D) molybdenum sulfide (MoS2) is a promising candidate for developing efficient and durable LICs due to its wide lithiation potential and unique layer structure, enhancing charge storage efficiency. Modifying the extrinsic features, such as the dimensions and shape at the nanoscale, serves as a potential path to overcome the sluggish kinetics observed in the LICs. Herein, the MoS2 nanoflowers have been synthesized through a hydrothermal route. The developed LIC exhibited a specific capacitance of 202.4 F g-1 at 0.25 A g-1 and capacitance retention of >90 % over 5,000 cycles. Using an ether electrolyte improved the voltage window (2.0 V) and enhanced the stability performance. The ex-situ material characterization after the stability test reveals that the storage mechanism in MoS2-LICs is not diffusion-controlled. Instead, the fast surface redox reactions, especially intercalation/deintercalation of ions, are more prominent for charge storage.

Applications of Functional Polymeric Eutectogels

Over the past two decades, deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have captured significant attention as an emergent class of solvents that have unique properties and applications in differing fields of chemistry. One area where DES systems find utility is the design of polymeric gels, often referred to as "eutectogels," which can be prepared either using a DES to replace a traditional solvent, or where monomers form part of the DES themselves. Due to the extensive network of intramolecular interactions (e.g., hydrogen bonding) and ionic species that exist in DES systems, polymeric eutectogels often possess appealing material properties-high adhesive strength, tuneable viscosity, rapid polymerization kinetics, good conductivity, as well as high strength and flexibility. In addition, non-covalent crosslinking approaches are possible due to the inherent interactions that exist in these materials. This review considers several key applications of polymeric eutectogels, including organic electronics, wearable sensor technologies, 3D printing resins, adhesives, and a range of various biomedical applications. The design, synthesis, and properties of these eutectogels are discussed, in addition to the advantages of this synthetic approach in comparison to traditional gel design. Perspectives on the future directions of this field are also highlighted.

Multi-Layer PVA-PANI Conductive Hydrogel for Symmetrical Supercapacitors: Preparation and Characterization

This work describes a simple, inexpensive, and robust method to prepare a flexible "all in one" integrated hydrogel supercapacitors (HySCs). Preparing smart hydrogels with high electrical conductivity, ability to stretch significantly, and excellent mechanical properties is the last challenge for tailored wearable devices. In this paper, we employed a physical crosslinking process that involves consecutive freezing and thawing cycles to prepare a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-based hydrogel. Exploiting the self-healing properties of these materials, the assembly of the different layers of the HySCs has been performed. The ionic conductivity within the electrolyte layer arises from the inclusion of an H2SO4 solution in the hydrogel network. Instead, the electronic conductivity is facilitated by the addition of the conductive polymer PANI-PAMPSA into the hydrogel layers. Electrochemical measures have highlighted newsworthy properties related to our HySCs, opening their use in wearable electronic applications.

Electrocatalysis in deep eutectic solvents: from fundamental properties to applications

Electrocatalysis stands out as a promising avenue for synthesizing high-value products with minimal environmental footprint, aligning with the imperative for sustainable energy solutions. Deep eutectic solvents (DESs), renowned for their eco-friendly, safe, and cost-effective nature, present myriad advantages, including extensive opportunities for material innovation and utilization as reaction media in electrocatalysis. This review initiates with an exposition on the distinctive features of DESs, progressing to explore their applications as solvents in electrocatalyst synthesis and electrocatalysis. Additionally, it offers an insightful analysis of the challenges and prospects inherent in electrocatalysis within DESs. By delving into these aspects comprehensively, this review aims to furnish a nuanced understanding of DESs, thus broadening their horizons in the realm of electrocatalysis and facilitating their expanded application.

Phosphorous - Containing Activated Carbon Derived From Natural Honeydew Peel Powers Aqueous Supercapacitors

The introduction of phosphorous (P), and oxygen (O) heteroatoms in the natural honeydew chemical structure is one of the most effective, and practical approaches to synthesizing activated carbon for possible high-performance energy storage applications. The performance metrics of supercapacitors depend on surface functional groups and high-surface-area electrodes that can play a dominant role in areas that require high-power applications. Here, we report a phosphorous and oxygen co-doped honeydew peel-derived activated carbon (HDP-AC) electrode with low surface area for supercapacitor via H3PO4 activation. This activator forms phosphorylation with cellulose fibers in the HDP. The formation of heteroatoms stabilizes the cellulose structure by preventing the formation of levoglucosan (C6H10O5), a cellulose combustion product, which would otherwise offer a pathway for a substantial degradation of cellulose into volatile products. Therefore, heteroatom doping has proved effective, in improving the electrochemical properties of AC-based electrodes for supercapacitors. The specific capacitance of HDP-AC exhibits greatly improved performance with increasing carbon-to-H3PO4 ratio, especially in energy density and power density. The improved performance is attributed to the high phosphorous doping with a hierarchical porous structure, which enables the transportation of ions at higher current rates. The high specific capacitance of 486, and 478 F/g at 0.6, and 1.3 A/g in 1 M H2SO4 electrolyte with a prominent retention of 98.5 % is observed for 2 M H3PO4 having an impregnation ratio of 1 : 4. The higher yield of HDP-AC could only be obtained at an activation temperature of 500 °C with an optimized amount of H3PO4 ratio. The findings suggest that the concentration of heteroatoms as surface functional groups in the synthesized HDP-AC depends on the chosen biomass precursor and the processing conditions. This work opens new avenues for utilizing biomass-derived materials in energy storage, emphasizing the importance of sustainable practices in addressing environmental challenges and advancing toward a greener future.

The prospect of supercapacitors in integrated energy harvesting and storage systems

Renewable energy sources, such as wind, tide, solar cells, etc, are the primary research areas that deliver enormous amounts of energy for our daily usage and minimize the dependency upon fossil fuel. Paralley, harnessing ambient energy from our surroundings must be prioritized for small powered systems. Nanogenerators, which use waste energy to generate electricity, are based on such concepts. We refer to these nanogenerators as energy harvesters. The purpose of energy harvesters is not to outcompete traditional renewable energy sources. It aims to reduce reliance on primary energy sources and enhance decentralized energy production. Energy storage is another area that needs to be explored for quickly storing the generated energy. Supercapacitor is a familiar device with a unique quick charging and discharging feature. Encouraging advancements in energy storage and harvesting technologies directly supports the efficient and comprehensive use of sustainable energy. Yet, self-optimization from independent energy harvesting and storage devices is challenging to overcome. It includes instability, insufficient energy output, and reliance on an external power source, preventing their direct application and future development. Coincidentally, integrating energy harvesters and storage devices can address these challenges, which demand their inherent action. This review intends to offer a complete overview of supercapacitor-based integrated energy harvester and storage systems and identify opportunities and directions for future research in this subject.

Fabrication of Soft-Hard Heterostructure Porous Carbon with Enhanced Performance for High Mass-Loading Aqueous Supercapacitors

With the increasing attention to energy and environmental issues, the high value-added utilization of biomass and pitch to functional carbon materials has become an important topic in science and technology. In this work, the soft-hard heterostructure porous carbon (NRP-HPC) is prepared by bio-template method, in which biomass and pitch are used as hard carbon and soft carbon precursors, respectively. The prepared NRP-HPC-4 shows high specific surface area (2293 m2 g-1), suitable pore size distribution, good conductivity (0.25 Ω cm-1), and strong wettability. The synergistic effect of soft carbon and hard carbon ensures the composite material exhibiting excellent electrochemical performance for high mass loading (12.0 mg cm-2) aqueous supercapacitor, i.e., high specific capacitance (304.69 F g-1 at 0.1 A g-1), high area capacitance (3.67 F cm-2 at 0.1 A g-1), high volumetric specific capacitance (202.74 F cm-3 at 0.1 A g-1), low open-circuit voltage attenuation rate (21.04 mV h-1), good voltage retention (79.12%), and excellent cyclic stability (92.04% capacitance retention and 100% coulombic efficiency after 20 000 cycles). The composite technology of soft carbon and hard carbon not only ensures the prepared porous carbon electrode materials with enhanced electrochemical performance, but also realizes the high value-added coupling utilization of biomass and pitch.

High-performance electrode materials of heteroatom-doped lignin-based carbon materials for supercapacitor applications

Supercapacitors are the preferred option for supporting renewable energy sources owing to many benefits, including fast charging, long life, high energy and power density, and saving energy. While electrode materials with environmentally friendly preparation, high performance, and low cost are important research directions of supercapacitors. At present, the growing global population and the increasingly pressing issue of environmental pollution have drawn the focus of numerous researchers worldwide to the development and utilization of renewable biomass resources. Lignin, a renewable aromatic polymer, has reserves second only to cellulose in nature. Ten million tonnes of industrial lignin are produced in pulp and paper mills annually, most of which are disposed of as waste or burned for fuel, seriously depleting natural resources and polluting the environment. One practical strategy to accomplish sustainable development is to employ lignin resources to create high-value materials. Based on the high carbon content and rich functional groups of lignin, the lignin-based carbon materials generated after carbonization treatment display specific electrochemical properties as electrode materials. Nevertheless, low electrochemical activity of untreated lignin precludes it from achieving its full potential for application in energy storage. Heteroatom doping is a common modification method that aims to improve the electrochemical performance of the electrode materials by optimizing the structure of the lignin, improving its pore structure and increasing the number of active sites on its surface. This paper aims to establish theoretical foundations for design, preparation, and optimizing the performance of heteroatom-doped lignin-based carbon materials, as well as for developing high-value-added lignin materials. The most reported the mechanism of supercapacitors, the doping process involving various types of heteroatoms, and the analysis of how heteroatoms affect the performance of lignin-based carbon materials are also detailed in this review.

Modeling Ion Transport across Thin-Film Composite Membranes During Saltwater Electrolysis

Affordable thin-film composite (TFC) membranes are a potential alternative to more expensive ion exchange membranes in saltwater electrolyzers used for hydrogen gas production. We used a solution-friction transport model to study how the induced potential gradient controls ion transport across the polyamide (PA) active layer and support layers of TFC membranes during electrolysis. The set of parameters was simplified by assigning the same size-related partition and friction coefficients for all salt ions through the membrane active layer. The model was fit to experimental ion transport data from saltwater electrolysis with 600 mM electrolytes at a current density of 10 mA cm-2. When the electrolyte concentration and current density were increased, the transport of major charge carriers was successfully predicted by the model. Ion transport calculated using the model only minimally changed when the negative active layer charge density was varied from 0 to 600 mM, indicating active layer charge was not largely responsible for controlling ion crossover during electrolysis. Based on model simulations, a sharp pH gradient was predicted to occur within the supporting layer of the membrane. These results can help guide membrane design and operation conditions in water electrolyzers using TFC membranes.

Pecan Shell-Derived Activated Carbon for High-Electrochemical Performance Supercapacitor Electrode

Carbon nanomaterials-based electric double-layer capacitors (EDLCs) are reliable and appealing energy-storage systems offering high power density and long cycling stability. However, these energy storage devices are plagued with critical shortcomings, such as low specific capacitance, inefficient physical/chemical activation process, and self-discharge of electrode materials, hindering their future application. In this work, we use a self-activation process, an environmentally benign and low-cost process, to produce high-performance activated carbon (AC). Novel activated carbon from pecan shells (PS) was successfully synthesized through a single-step self-activation process, which combines the carbonization and activation processes. The as-synthesized pecan shell-derived activated carbon (PSAC) provides a high-porosity, low-resistance, and ordered pore structure with a specific pore volume of 0.744 cm3/g and BET surface area of 1554 m2/g. The supercapacitors fabricated from PSAC demonstrate a specific capacitance of 269 F/g at 2 A/g, excellent cycling stability over 15,000 cycles, and energy and power density of 37.4 Wh/kg and of 2.1 kW/kg, respectively. It is believed that the high-efficiency PSAC synthesized from the novel self-activation method could provide a practical route to environmentally friendly and easily scalable supercapacitors.

Potential Development of Porous Carbon Composites Generated from the Biomass for Energy Storage Applications

Creating an innovative and environmentally friendly energy storage system is of vital importance due to the growing number of environmental problems and the fast exhaustion of fossil fuels. Energy storage using porous carbon composites generated from biomass has attracted a lot of attention in the research community. This is primarily due to the environmentally friendly nature, abundant availability in nature, accessibility, affordability, and long-term viability of macro/meso/microporous carbon sourced from a variety of biological materials. Extensive information on the design and the building of an energy storage device that uses supercapacitors was a part of this research. This study examines both porous carbon electrodes (ranging from 44 to 1050 F/g) and biomasses with a large surface area (between 215 and 3532 m2/g). Supposedly, these electrodes have a capacitive retention performance of about 99.7 percent after 1000 cycles. The energy density of symmetric supercapacitors is also considered, with values between 5.1 and 138.4 Wh/kg. In this review, we look at the basic structures of biomass and how they affect porous carbon synthesis. It also discusses the effects of different structured porous carbon materials on electrochemical performance and analyzes them. In recent developments, significant steps have been made across various fields including fuel cells, carbon capture, and the utilization of biomass-derived carbonaceous nanoparticles. Notably, our study delves into the innovative energy conversion and storage potentials inherent in these materials. This comprehensive investigation seeks to lay the foundation for forthcoming energy storage research endeavors by delineating the current advancements and anticipating potential challenges in fabricating porous carbon composites sourced from biomass.

A Binary Ionogel Electrolyte for the Realization of an All Solid-State Electrical Double-Layer Capacitor Performing at Low Temperature

Over the last years, solid-state electrolytes made of an ionic liquid (IL) confined in a solid (inorganic or polymer) matrix, also known as ionogels, have been proposed to solve the leakage problems occurring at high temperatures in classical electrical double-layer capacitors (EDLCs) with an organic electrolyte, and thereof improve the safety. However, making ionogel-based EDLCs perform with reasonable power at low temperature is still a major challenge due to the high melting point of the confined IL. To overcome these limitations, the present contribution discloses ionogel films prepared in a totally oxygen/moisture-free atmosphere by encapsulating 70 wt % of an equimolar mixture of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate - [EMIm][BF4]0.5[FSI]0.5 - into a poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVdF-HFP) network. The further called "binary ionogel" films demonstrated a high flexibility and a good ionic conductivity of 5.8 mS cm-1 at 20 °C. Contrary to the ionogels prepared from either [EMIm][FSI] or [EMIm][BF4], displaying melting at Tm=-16 °C and -7 °C, respectively, the crystallization of confined [EMIm][BF4]0.5[FSI]0.5 is quenched in the binary ionogel, which shows only a glass transition at -101 °C. This quenching enables an increased ionicity and ionic diffusion at the interface with the PVdF host network, leading the binary ionogel membrane to display higher ionic conductivity below -20 °C than the parent binary [EMIm][BF4]0.5[FSI]0.5 liquid. Laminate EDLCs were built with a 100 μm thick binary ionogel separator and electrodes made from a hierarchical micro-/mesoporous MgO-templated carbon containing a reasonable proportion of mesopores to enhance the mass transport of ions, especially at low temperature where the ionic diffusion noticeably decreases. The EDLCs operated up to 3.0 V with ideal EDL characteristics from -40 °C to room temperature. Their output specific energy under a discharge power of 1 kW kg-1 is ca. 4 times larger than with a cell implementing the same carbon electrodes together with the binary [EMIm][BF4]0.5[FSI]0.5 liquid. Hence, this binary ionogel electrolyte concept paves the road for developing safe and flexible solid-state energy storage devices operating at subambient temperatures in extreme environments.

Interfacial Engineering of Ti3C2Tx MXene Electrode Using g-C3N4 Nanosheets for High-Performance Supercapacitor in Neutral Electrolyte

The superior performance of the Ti3C2Tx (MXene)-based supercapacitor in acidic electrolytes has recently gained much interest in the energy storage community. Nevertheless, its performance in most neutral electrolytes is unfavorably low, plausibly due to limited ion diffusion between the MXene layers. Herein, protonated g-C3N4 (pg-C3N4) is incorporated into the Ti3C2Tx electrode by using a facile self-assembling process and annealing, which results in increased interlayer d-spacing and electrical conductivity of the composite electrode. As a result, the annealed Ti3C2Tx/pg-C3N4 film revealed an enhanced ion-accessibility and gravimetric capacitance of 140 F g-1 in 1 M aqueous MgSO4 electrolyte. The cyclic stability test also indicates excellent capacitance retention, with negligible loss of capacitance over 10000 cycles.

Endowing the Operability of Supercapacitors at High Temperatures by Regulating the Solvation Structure in Dilute Hybrid Electrolyte with Trimethyl Phosphate Cosolvent

The redox stabilities of different oxygen donor solvents (C═O, P═O and S═O) and lithium salt anions for supercapacitors (SCs) electrolytes have been compared by calculating the frontier molecular orbital energy. Among six lithium difluoro(oxalate)borate (LiDFOB)-based mono-solvent electrolytes, the dilute LiDFOB-1,4-butyrolactone (GBL) electrolyte exhibits the highest operating voltage but suffers from electrolyte breakdown at elevated temperatures. Trimethyl phosphate (TMP) exhibits the highest redox stability and a strongly negative electrostatic potential (ESP), making it suitable for promoting the dissolution of LiDFOB as expected. Therefore, TMP is selected as a co-solvent into LiDFOB-GBL electrolyte to regulate Li+ solvation structure and improve the operability of electrolytes at high temperatures. The electrochemical stable potential window (ESPW) of 0.5 m LiDFOB-G/T(5/5) hybrid electrolyte can reach 5.230 V. The activated carbon (AC)-based symmetric SC using 0.5 m LiDFOB-G/T(5/5) hybrid electrolyte achieves a high energy density of 54.2 Wh kg-1 at 1.35 kW kg-1 and the capacitance retention reaches 89.2% after 10 000 cycles. The operating voltage of SC can be maintained above 2 V when the temperature rises to 60 °C.

Examining the impacts of salt specificity on freshwater microbial community and functional potential following salinization

The degradation of freshwater systems by salt pollution is a threat to global freshwater resources. Salinization is commonly identified by increased specific conductance (conductivity), a proxy for salt concentrations. However, conductivity fails to account for the diversity of salts entering freshwaters and the potential implications this has on microbial communities and functions. We tested 4 types of salt pollution-MgCl2, MgSO4, NaCl, and Na2SO4-on bacterial taxonomic and functional α-, β-diversity of communities originating from streams in two distinct localities (Nebraska [NE] and Ohio [OH], USA). Community responses depended on the site of origin, with NE and OH exhibiting more pronounced decreases in community diversity in response to Na2SO4 and MgCl2 than other salt amendments. A closer examination of taxonomic and functional diversity metrics suggests that core features of communities are more resistant to induced salt stress and that marginal features at both a population and functional level are more likely to exhibit significant structural shifts based on salt specificity. The lack of uniformity in community response highlights the need to consider the compositional complexities of salinization to accurately identify the ecological consequences of instances of salt pollution.

A High-Performance Supercapacitor Based on Hierarchical Template-Free Ni/SnO2 Nanostructures via Hydrothermal Method

Novel flake-like Ni1-xSnxO2 particles were successfully prepared by template-free hydrothermal synthesis. The prepared samples were investigated for their properties by different characterization techniques. Scanning micrographs showed that the obtained particles consisted of nanoflakes. The X-ray diffraction results of the Ni1-xSnxO2 revealed the formation of mixed-phase Ni/SnO2 having the typical tetragonal structure of SnO2, and the cubic structure of Ni in a nanocrystalline nature. The doping with Ni had a certain influence on the host's lattice structure of SnO2 at different doping concentrations. Confirmation of the functional groups and the elements in the nanomaterials was accomplished using FTIR and EDS analyses. The electrochemical performance analysis of the prepared nanomaterials were carried out with the help of the CV, GCD, and EIS techniques. The specific capacitance of the synthesized nanomaterials with different concentrations of Ni dopant in SnO2 was analyzed at different scanning rates. Interestingly, a 5% Ni-doped SnO2 nanocomposite exhibited a maximum specific capacitance of 841.85 F g-1 at 5 mV s-1 in a 6 M KOH electrolyte. Further, to boost the electrochemical performance, a redox additive electrolyte was utilized, which exhibited a maximum specific capacitance of 2130.33 at 5 mV s-1 and an excellent capacitance retention of 93.22% after 10,000 GCD cycles. These excellent electrochemical characteristics suggest that the Ni/SnO2 nanocomposite could be utilized as an electrode material for high-performance supercapacitors.

Cations and Anions Affect the Speed of Sound in Water Oppositely

Identifying the composition of a solution using acoustics remains a challenge. It is known that for low salt concentrations the speed of sound in water increases linearly with the concentration of the electrolyte, but the contribution of individual cations and anions is unknown. We introduce the concept of intrinsic sound speed Ai to quantify the contribution of ions to the speed of sound. We found that cations increase the speed of sound in water whereas anions decrease the speed of sound. Hydration layers around the ions play a major role. Because cations have a hydration layer thicker than that of anions, their contribution to the speed of sound is larger than that of anions. Experimental data on salts not used to determine the contribution of individual ions are in quantitative agreement with the predicted values. Our method can be applied to various systems containing small quantities of ions, molecules, or particles. With the knowledge that cations increase the speed of sound, we were able to explain previously unexplained data in the literature.

Solid polymer electrolyte-based atomic switches: from materials to mechanisms and applications

As miniaturization of semiconductor memory devices is reaching its physical and technological limits, there is a demand for memory technologies that operate on new principles. Atomic switches are nanoionic devices that show repeatable resistive switching between high-resistance and low-resistance states under bias voltage applications, based on the transport of metal ions and redox reactions in solids. Their essential structure consists of an ion conductor sandwiched between electrochemically active and inert electrodes. This review focuses on the resistive switching mechanism of atomic switches that utilize a solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) as the ion conductor. Owing to the superior properties of polymer materials such as mechanical flexibility, compatibility with various substrates, and low fabrication costs, SPE-based atomic switches are a promising candidate for the next-generation of volatile and nonvolatile memories. Herein, we describe their operating mechanisms and key factors for controlling the device performance with different polymer matrices. In particular, the effects of moisture absorption in the polymer matrix on the resistive switching behavior are addressed in detail. As potential applications, atomic switches with inkjet-printed SPE and quantum conductance behavior are described. SPE-based atomic switches also have great potential in use for neuromorphic devices. The development of these devices will be enhanced using nanoarchitectonics concepts, which integrate functional materials and devices.

Nitrogen-functionalization of carbon materials for supercapacitor: Combining with nanostructure directly is superior to doping amorphous element

Just how heteroatomic functionalization enhances electrochemical capacity of carbon materials is a recent and widely studied field in scientific research. However, there is no consensus on whether combining with heteroatom-bearing nanostructures directly or doping amorphous elements is more advantageous. Herein, two kinds of porous carbon nanosheets were prepared from coal tar pitch through anchoring graphitic carbon nitride (PCNs/GCNs-5) or doping amorphous nitrogen element (PCNs/N). The structural characteristics and electrochemical properties of the two PCNs were revealed and compared carefully. It can be found that the amorphous nitrogen of PCNs/N will have a grievous impact on its carbon skeleton network, resulting in reduced stability in charge and discharge process, while the structural collapse of carbon network could be avoided in PCNs/GCNs-5 by the heteroatoms in the form of nanostructure. Particularly, PCNs/GCNs-5 exhibits extremely high specific capacity of 388 F g-1 at 1 A g-1, and splendid the capacitance retention rate of 98% after 10,000 cycles of charge and discharge, which are overmatch than the amorphous nitrogen doped carbon materials reported recently and PCNs/N. The combining strategy with nanostructure will inspire the design of carbon materials towards high-performance supercapacitor.

Recent Advances in Biopolymer-Based Hydrogel Electrolytes for Flexible Supercapacitors

Growing concern regarding the impact of fossil fuels has led to demands for the development of green and renewable materials for advanced electrochemical energy storage devices. Biopolymers with unique hierarchical structures and physicochemical properties, serving as an appealing platform for the advancement of sustainable energy, have found widespread application in the gel electrolytes of supercapacitors. In this Review, we outline the structure and characteristics of various biopolymers, discuss the proposed mechanisms and assess the evaluation metrics of gel electrolytes in supercapacitor devices, and further analyze the roles of biopolymer materials in this context. The state-of-the-art electrochemical performance of biopolymer-based hydrogel electrolytes for supercapacitors and their multiple functionalities are summarized, while underscoring the current technical challenges and potential solutions. This Review is intended to offer a thorough overview of recent developments in biopolymer-based hydrogel electrolytes, highlighting research concerning green and sustainable energy storage devices and potential avenues for further development.

Three-Dimensional Ni-MOF as a High-Performance Supercapacitor Anode Material; Experimental and Theoretical Insight

A three-dimensional (3D) Ni-MOF of the formula [Ni(C4H4N2)(CHO2)2]n, has been reported, which shows a capacitance of 2150 F/g at a current density of 1A/g in a three-electrode setup (5.0 M KOH). Post-mortem analysis of the sample after three-electrode measurements revealed the bias-induced transformation of Ni-MOF to Ni(OH)2, which has organic constituents intercalated within the sample exhibiting better storage performance than bulk Ni(OH)2. Afterward, the synthesized MOF and reduced graphene (rGO) were used as the anode and cathode electrode material, respectively, and a two-electrode asymmetric supercapacitor device (ASC) setup was designed that exhibited a capacitance of 125 F/g (at 0.2 A/g) with a high energy density of 50.17 Wh/kg at a power density of 335.1 W/kg. The ASC further has a very high reversibility (97.9% Coulombic efficiency) and cyclic stability (94%) after 5000 constant charge-discharge cycles. Its applicability was also demonstrated by running a digital watch. Using sophisticated density functional theory simulations, the electronic properties, diffusion energy barrier for the electrolytic ions (K+), and quantum capacitance for the Ni(OH)2 electrode have been reported. The lower diffusion energy barrier (0.275 eV) and higher quantum capacitance (1150 μF/cm2) are attributed to the higher charge storage performance of the Ni-MOF-transformed Ni(OH)2 electrode as observed in the experiment.

Self-adhesive, freeze-tolerant, and strong hydrogel electrolyte containing xanthan gum enables the high-performance of zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitors

Hydrogel electrolyte is an ideal candidate material for flexible energy storage devices due to its excellent softness and conductivity properties. However, challenges such as the inherent mechanical weakness, the susceptibility to be frozen in low-temperature environments, and the insufficiency of hydrogel-electrode contact persist. Herein, a "Multi in One" strategy is employed to effectively conquer these difficulties by endowing hydrogels with high strength, freeze-resistance, and self-adhesive ability. Multiple hydrogen bond networks and ion crosslinking networks are constructed within the hydrogel electrolyte (PVA/PAAc/XG) containing polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), acrylic acid (AAc), and xanthan gum (XG), promoting the enhanced mechanical property, and the adhesion to electrode materials is also improved through abundant active groups. The introduction of zinc ions provides the material with superior frost resistance while also promoting electrical conductivity. Leveraging its multifunction of superior mechanical strength, anti-freeze property, and self-adhesive characteristic, the PVA/PAAc/XG hydrogel electrolyte is employed to fabricate zinc ion hybrid supercapacitors (ZHS). Remarkably, ZHS exhibits outstanding electrochemical performance and cycle stability. A remarkable capacity retention rate of 83.86 % after 10,000 charge-discharge cycles can be achieved at high current densities, even when the operational temperature decreases to -60 °C, showing great potential in the field of flexible energy storage devices.

Long-Term Robustness and Failure Mechanisms of Electrochemical Stripping for Wastewater Ammonia Recovery

Nitrogen in wastewater has negative environmental, human health, and economic impacts but can be recovered to reduce the costs and environmental impacts of wastewater treatment and chemical production. To recover ammonia/ammonium (total ammonia nitrogen, TAN) from urine, we operated electrochemical stripping (ECS) for over a month, achieving 83.4 ± 1.5% TAN removal and 73.0 ± 2.9% TAN recovery. With two reactors, we recovered sixteen 500-mL batches (8 L total) of ammonium sulfate (20.9 g/L TAN) approaching commercial fertilizer concentrations (28.4 g/L TAN) and often having >95% purity. While evaluating the operation and maintenance needs, we identified pH, full-cell voltage, product volume, and water flux into the product as informative process monitoring parameters that can be inexpensively and rapidly measured. Characterization of fouled cation exchange and omniphobic membranes informs cleaning and reactor modifications to reduce fouling with organics and calcium/magnesium salts. To evaluate the impact of urine collection and storage on ECS, we conducted experiments with urine at different levels of dilution with flush water, extents of divalent cation precipitation, and degrees of hydrolysis. ECS effectively treated urine under all conditions, but minimizing flush water and ensuring storage until complete hydrolysis would enable energy-efficient TAN recovery. Our experimental results and cost analysis motivate a multifaceted approach to improving ECS's technical and economic viability by extending component lifetimes, decreasing component costs, and reducing energy consumption through material, reactor, and process engineering. In summary, we demonstrated urine treatment as a foothold for electrochemical nutrient recovery from wastewater while supporting the applicability of ECS to seven other wastewaters with widely varying characteristics. Our findings will facilitate the scale-up and deployment of electrochemical nutrient recovery technologies, enabling a circular nitrogen economy that fosters sanitation provision, efficient chemical production, and water resource protection.

Synthesis of Raspberry-like Nanoparticles via Surface Grafting of Positively Charged Polyelectrolyte Brushes: Colloidal Stability and Surface Properties

A method to synthesize stable, raspberry-like nanoparticles (NPs), using surface grafting of poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA) brushes on a polystyrene (PS) core with varying grafting densities, is reported. A two-step functionalization reaction of PGMA epoxide groups comprising an amination step first using ethylene diamine and then followed by a quaternization using glycidyltrimethylammonium chloride generates permanently and positively charged polyelectrolyte brushes, which result in both steric and electrostatic stabilization. The dispersion stability of the brush-bearing NPs is dramatically improved compared to that of the pristine PS core in salt solutions at ambient (25 °C) and elevated temperatures (60 °C). Additionally, the grafted polyelectrolyte chains undergo a reversible swelling in the presence of different ionic strength (IS) salts, which modulate the surface properties, including roughness, stiffness, and adhesion. An atomic force microscope under both dry and wet conditions was used to image conformational changes of the polyelectrolyte chains during the swelling and deswelling transitions as well as to probe the nanomechanical properties by analyzing the corresponding force-sample separation curves. The quaternized polyelectrolyte brushes undergo a conformational transition from a collapsed state to a swelled state in the osmotic brush (OB) regime triggered by the osmotic gradient of mobile ions to the interior of the polymer chain. At IS ∼ 1 M, the brushes contract and the globules reform (salted brush state) as evidenced by an increase in the surface roughness and a reduction in the adhesion of the brushes. Beyond IS ∼ 1 M, quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring measurements show that salt uptake continues to take place predominantly on the exterior surface of the brush since salt adsorption is not accompanied by a size increase as measured by dynamic light scattering. The study adds new insights into our understanding of the behavior of NPs bearing salt-responsive polyelectrolyte brushes with adaptive swelling thresholds that can ultimately modulate surface properties.

Construction and application of NiCo2O4@MnS composite with hierarchical structure for hybrid supercapacitor

The development of an electrochemical energy storage system with exceptional performance is an important way to address the energy crisis and environmental pollution of the modem world. In this study, an NiCo2O4@MnS composite with a unique hierarchical structure has been successfully synthesized on an NF substrate using the hydrothermal-electrodeposition method. The results indicate that NiCo2O4@MnS possesses superior specific capacitance and excellent cycling stability. At a current density of 2 A g-1, its specific capacitance can reach 2100 F g-1, while the capacitance retention is still 76% after 10 000 cycles at 10 A g-1. Moreover, when the current density is 1 A g-1, the assembled NiCo2O4@MnS//AC device can deliver a specific capacitance of 203 F g-1, and the energy density is up to 55 W h kg-1 at a power density of 697 W kg-1. These outstanding electrochemical properties of NiCo2O4@MnS can be ascribed to the increase in ion diffusion, specific surface area and electronic conductivity due to its unique hierarchical structure and introduction of MnS.

Study of Zinc Diffusion Based on S, N-Codoped Honeycomb Carbon Cathodes for High-Performance Zinc-Ion Capacitors

Capacitors with zinc ions, with excellent stabilities, low cost, and high energy density, are expected to be promising energy storage devices. However, the development of zinc-ion capacitors is quietly restricted by low specific capacity and cycling stability. Herein, to overcome these limitations, honeycomb-structured S, N-codoped carbon (SNPC) is constructed by one-pot calcination of waste corn bracts and thiourea. The honeycomb structure of SNPC is demonstrated to provide abundant active sites that can enhance the extron/ion transport, conductivity for high power export, and ion adsorption capacity in energy storage applications, leading to a higher electrochemical performance achieved. The electrolytes of zinc salt have also been studied. It reveals that the SNPC electrode presents the best electrochemical performance in a 2 M ZnSO4 and 0.5 M ZnCl2 electrolyte mixture because in the electrolyte mixture, Cl- can replace the existing bound water in the solvation structure to form an anion-type water-free solvation structure ZnCl42-. The SNPC-800 electrode with a highly improved surface area (∼909.0 m2 g-1) is proved to be more suitable as the electrode than other materials. Aqueous zinc-ion capacitors (ZICs) have been assembled by the honeycomb-structured SNPC-800 as the cathode, which can achieve a relatively wide working voltage range of 0.1-1.8 V. The SNPC-800 ZICs exhibit a superior specific capacity of 179.1 mA h g-1 at 0.1 A g-1. The energy density of SNPC-800 ZICs reaches an impressive value of 89.6 Wh kg-1 at 53.8 W kg-1, and it sustains 28.3 Wh kg-1 at 1997.6 W kg-1. In addition, there is 99.8% capacity retention in the SNPC-800 ZICs over 5000 cycles. The absorption energy in SPNC is much higher than that in undoped CPC, as confirmed by density functional theory, which reveals that introducing of heteroatoms (S, N) has a comparatively active advantage at increasing the Zn-ion storage capacity. This work proposes a practical strategy for the effective recycling of waste biomass materials into honeycomb carbon electrode materials. Moreover, the honeycomb carbon-based ZICs with excellent electrochemical performance and long-term cycling stability possess great potential to be a superior cathode in practical applications.

The "In situ electrolyte" as a sustainable alternative for the realization of high-power devices

The "in situ electrolyte" displays a concept for electric double-layer- as well as metal-ion capacitors in which the by-products formed during carbon synthesis serve directly as electrolyte salt to minimize waste. In this work, the concept is applied for lithium- and sodium-based systems realizing EDLCs containing aqueous, "Water in Salt" (up to 1.8 V) as well as organic (2.4 V) electrolytes. Via the mechanochemical synthesis, carbon materials with surface areas up to 2000 m2  g-1 and an optimal amount of remaining by-product are designed from the renewable resource lignin. Different cation-anion combinations are enabled by further modification directly inside the pores creating imide-based salts which are tracked by synchrotron in situ XRD. By the addition of solvents, the EDLCs show good capacitances up to 21 F g-1 combined with excellent rate performances and stabilities. Moreover, the LiTFSI loaded carbon as positive electrode introduces a new tunable lithium alternative for the pre-lithiation of Li-ion capacitors displaying a good rate performance and cyclability.

Flexible Linker-Based Triazine-Functionalized 2D Covalent Organic Frameworks for Supercapacitor and Gas Sorption Applications

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) having a large surface area, porosity, and substantial amounts of heteroatom content are recognized as the ideal class of materials for energy storage and gas sorption applications. In this work, we have synthesized four different porous COF materials by the polycondensation of a heteroatom-rich flexible triazine-based trialdehyde linker, namely 2,4,6-tris(4-formylphenoxy)-1,3,5-triazine (TPT-CHO), with four different triamine linkers. Triamine linkers were chosen based on differences in size, symmetry, planarity, and heteroatom content, leading to the synthesis of four different COF materials named IITR-COF-1, IITR-COF-2, IITR-COF-3, and IITR-COF-4. IITR-COF-1, synthesized within 24 h from the most planar and largest amine monomer, exhibited the largest Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area of 2830 m2 g-1, superior crystallinity, and remarkable reproducibility compared to the other COFs. All of the synthesized COFs were explored for energy and gas storage applications. It is shown that the surface area and redox-active triazene rings in the materials have a profound effect on energy and gas storage enhancement. In a three-electrode setup, IITR-COF-1 achieved an electrochemical stability potential window (ESPW) of 2.0 V, demonstrating a high specific capacitance of 182.6 F g-1 with energy and power densities of 101.5 Wh kg-1 and 298.3 W kg-1, respectively, at a current density of 0.3 A g-1 in 0.5 M K2SO4 (aq) with long-term durability. The symmetric supercapacitor of IITR-COF-1//IITR-COF-1 exhibited a notable specific capacitance of 30.5 F g-1 and an energy density of 17.0 Wh kg-1 at a current density of 0.12 A g-1. At the same time, it demonstrated 111.3% retention of its initial specific capacitance after 10k charge-discharge cycles. Moreover, it exhibited exceptional CO2 capture capacity of 25.90 and 10.10 wt % at 273 and 298 K, respectively, with 2.1 wt % of H2 storage capacity at 77 K and 1 bar.

A universal and scalable transformation of bulk metals into single-atom catalysts in ionic liquids

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) with maximized metal atom utilization and intriguing properties are of utmost importance for energy conversion and catalysis science. However, the lack of a straightforward and scalable synthesis strategy of SACs on diverse support materials remains the bottleneck for their large-scale industrial applications. Herein, we report a general approach to directly transform bulk metals into single atoms through the precise control of the electrodissolution-electrodeposition kinetics in ionic liquids and demonstrate the successful applicability of up to twenty different monometallic SACs and one multimetallic SAC with five distinct elements. As a case study, the atomically dispersed Pt was electrodeposited onto Ni3N/Ni-Co-graphene oxide heterostructures in varied scales (up to 5 cm × 5 cm) as bifunctional catalysts with the electronic metal-support interaction, which exhibits low overpotentials at 10 mA cm-2 for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER, 30 mV) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER, 263 mV) with a relatively low Pt loading (0.98 wt%). This work provides a simple and practical route for large-scale synthesis of various SACs with favorable catalytic properties on diversified supports using alternative ionic liquids and inspires the methodology on precise synthesis of multimetallic single-atom materials with tunable compositions.

Recent progress of high-performance in-plane zinc ion hybrid micro-supercapacitors: design, achievements, and challenges

With the increasing demand for wearable and miniature electronics, in-plane zinc (Zn) ion hybrid micro-supercapacitors (ZIHMSCs), as a promising and compatible energy power source, have attracted tremendous attention due to their unique merits. Despite enormous development and breakthroughs in this field, there is still a lack of a systematic and comprehensive review to update the recent progress of in-plane ZIHMSCs in the design and fabrication of both micro-anodes and micro-cathodes, the exploration and optimization of new electrolytes, and the investigation of related-energy storage mechanisms. This minireview summarizes the key breakthroughs and recent advances in the construction of high-performance in-plane ZIHMSCs. First, the background and fundamentals of in-plane ZIHMSCs are briefly introduced. Then, new concepts, strategies, and latest exciting developments in the preparation and interfacial engineering of Zn metal micro-anodes, the fabrication of advanced micro-cathodes, and the exploration of new electrolyte systems are discussed, respectively. Finally, the key challenges and future directions for the development of high-performance in-plane ZIHMSCs are presented as well. This review not only accounts for the recent research progress in the field of the in-plane ZIHMSCs, but also provides important new insights into the design of next-generation miniaturized energy storage devices.

Beyond the electrical double layer model: ion-dependent effects in nanoscale solvent organization

The nanoscale organization of electrolyte solutions at interfaces is often described well by the electrical double-layer model. However, a recent study has shown that this model breaks down in solutions of LiClO4 in acetonitrile at a silica interface, because the interface imposes a strong structuring in the solvent that in turn determines the preferred locations of cations and anions. As a surprising consequence of this organisation, the effective surface potential changes from negative at low electrolyte concentration to positive at high electrolyte concentration. Here we combine previous ion-current measurements with vibrational sum-frequency-generation spectroscopy experiments and molecular dynamics simulations to explore how the localization of ions at the acetonitrile-silica interface depends on the sizes of the anions and cations. We observe a strong, synergistic effect of the cation and anion identities that can prompt a large difference in the ability of ions to partition to the silica surface, and thereby influence the effective surface potential. Our results have implications for a wide range of applications that involve electrolyte solutions in polar aprotic solvents at nanoscale interfaces.

A high-current hydrogel generator with engineered mechanoionic asymmetry

Mechanoelectrical energy conversion is a potential solution for the power supply of miniaturized wearable and implantable systems; yet it remains challenging due to limited current output when exploiting low-frequency motions with soft devices. We report a design of a hydrogel generator with mechanoionic current generation amplified by orders of magnitudes with engineered structural and chemical asymmetry. Under compressive loading, relief structures in the hydrogel intensify net ion fluxes induced by deformation gradient, which synergize with asymmetric ion adsorption characteristics of the electrodes and distinct diffusivity of cations and anions in the hydrogel matrix. This engineered mechanoionic process can yield 4 mA (5.5 A m-2) of peak current under cyclic compression of 80 kPa applied at 0.1 Hz, with the transferred charge reaching up to 916 mC m-2 per cycle. The high current output of this miniaturized hydrogel generator is beneficial for the powering of wearable devices, as exemplified by a controlled drug-releasing system for wound healing. The demonstrated mechanisms for amplifying mechanoionic effect will enable further designs for a variety of self-powered biomedical systems.

High electrochemical performance of nickel cobaltite@biomass carbon composite (NiCoO@BC) derived from the bark of Anacardium occidentale for supercapacitor application

Biomass carbon-based materials are highly promising for supercapacitor (SC) electrodes due to their availability, environment-friendliness, and low cost. Herein, an easy energy-saving hydrothermal process was used to produce NiCo2O4/NiOOH (NiCoO) composites with biomass carbon (BC) derived from the bark of Anacardium occidentale (AO) at different synthesis time durations (2 h, 4 h, 8 h, 16 h). The structural and morphological properties of the samples were analysed using XRD, Raman spectroscopy, XPS, SEM, TEM and BET, and the results exhibit the presence of carbon inserted into the nickel-cobalt hydroxide matrix. The NiCoO@BC composite synthesized in 4 h (NiCoO@BC(4 h)) displays a good specific capacitance of 475 F g-1 at 0.5 A g-1 and a low equivalent series resistance (ESR) value of 0.36 Ω. It shows a good coulombic efficiency of 98% and retains 86% of the capacitance after 4000 cycles. The asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) device (NiCoO@BC(4 h)//AC) assembled using activated carbon (AC) as a negative electrode displays 20 W h kg-1 energy density and 900 W kg-1 power density at 1 A g-1. The stability test shows a good coulombic efficiency of 99% and 78% capacitance retention after 15 000 cycles. These findings imply that NiCoO@BC composites have outstanding electrochemical properties, making them suitable as SC electrode materials.

NASICON Membrane with High Ionic Conductivity Synthesized by High-Temperature Solid-State Reaction

In the present work, we studied the impact of excess Na addition on the structure of the standard NASICON ion conductor along with Na ion transport mechanisms. In this sense, NASICON ceramic membranes (NZSP) were prepared by a simple chemical synthesis method, the solid state reaction (SSR), using an excess of 5% Na (Na3.15Zr2Si2PO12) and an excess of 10% Na (Na3.3Zr2Si2PO12), in order to improve the conduction properties of the ceramic membrane. The characterization of the NZSP nanoparticles was performed by measuring the particle size by dynamic light scattering (DLS), the morphology of the NASICON samples pre-sintered at 1100 °C was analyzed by the SEM method (scanning electron microscope), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis was used to investigate the crystal structure of samples, while the surface area was measured using the BET technique. The electrical properties (i.e., ionic conductivity) were evaluated by impedance spectroscopic methods at room temperature (RT). Following the experiments for NASICON membranes without Na excess, with 5% Na excess, and with 10% Na excess synthesized at different pressing forces and sintering temperatures, it was found that membranes with a 10% Na excess, sintered at 1175 °C for 10 h, presented a good ionic conductivity (4.72 × 10-4 S/cm).

Chitosan modified graphene oxide with MnO2 deposition for high energy density flexible supercapacitors

To obtain a flexible composite electrode material with excellent electrochemical performance, chitosan (CS)/graphene oxide (GO) composite pretreated from microwave hydrothermal is adopted as the carbon substrate, and MnO2 active material is uniformly deposited on their surface through anodic electrodeposition. In this composite system, CS penetrates into graphene sheets as small molecule units, forming NH-C=O groups with GO via dehydration condensation, which effectively inhibits the stacking of GO and improves the specific surface area, conductivity, as well as the wettability of the carbon support. MnO2 bonding with heteroatom N from CS enables high active material loadings and forms stable three-dimensional network structure, facilitating the enhanced electrochemical performance. Results indicate that increasing depositing MnO2 amount leads to more defective structures of the composite, which promotes their electrochemical performance when used as electrode material. The area specific capacitance of the optimal composite reaches 3553.74 mF/cm2 at 5 mA/cm2 in 1 M Na2SO4 electrolyte. Kinetic analysis shows the energy storage process is capacitance-dominated, with the redox reactions of MnO2 being the main contributor. The prepared asymmetric solid supercapacitor delivers an energy density high up to 0.585 mWh/cm2 at power density of 3000 mW/cm2, and their excellent flexibility makes them promising candidates as flexible sensor.

Supercapacitors: An Efficient Way for Energy Storage Application

To date, batteries are the most widely used energy storage devices, fulfilling the requirements of different industrial and consumer applications. However, the efficient use of renewable energy sources and the emergence of wearable electronics has created the need for new requirements such as high-speed energy delivery, faster charge-discharge speeds, longer lifetimes, and reusability. This leads to the need for supercapacitors, which can be a good complement to batteries. However, one of their drawbacks is their lower energy storage capability, which has triggered worldwide research efforts to increase their energy density. With the introduction of novel nanostructured materials, hierarchical pore structures, hybrid devices combining these materials, and unconventional electrolytes, significant developments have been reported in the literature. This paper reviews the short history of the evolution of supercapacitors and the fundamental aspects of supercapacitors, positioning them among other energy-storage systems. The main electrochemical measurement methods used to characterize their energy storage features are discussed with a focus on their specific characteristics and limitations. High importance is given to the integral components of the supercapacitor cell, particularly to the electrode materials and the different types of electrolytes that determine the performance of the supercapacitor device (e.g., storage capability, power output, cycling stability). Current directions in the development of electrode materials, including carbonaceous forms, transition metal-based compounds, conducting polymers, and novel materials are discussed. The synergy between the electrode material and the current collector is a key factor, as well as the fine-tuning of the electrode material and electrolyte.

Ionic liquids: environmentally sustainable materials for energy conversion and storage applications

Ionic liquids (ILs), often known as green designer solvents, have demonstrated immense application potential in numerous scientific and technological domains. ILs possess high boiling point and low volatility that make them suitable environmentally benign candidates for many potential applications. The more important aspect associated with ILs is that their physicochemical properties can be effectively changed for desired applications just by tuning the structure of the cationic and/or anionic part of ILs. Furthermore, these eco-friendly designer materials can function as electrolytes or solvents depending on the application. Owing to the distinctive properties such as low volatility, high thermal and electrochemical stability, and better ionic conductivity, ILs are nowadays immensely used in a variety of energy applications, particularly in the development of green and sustainable energy storage and conversion devices. Suitable ILs are designed for specific purposes to be used as electrolytes and/or solvents for fuel cells, lithium-ion batteries, supercapacitors (SCs), and solar cells. Herein, we have highlighted the utilization of ILs as unique green designer materials in Li-batteries, fuel cells, SCs, and solar cells. This review will enlighten the promising prospects of these unique, environmentally sustainable materials for next-generation green energy conversion and storage devices. Ionic liquids have much to offer in the field of energy sciences regarding fixing some of the world's most serious issues. However, most of the discoveries discussed in this review article are still at the laboratory research scale for further development. This review article will inspire researchers and readers about how ILs can be effectively applied in energy sectors for various applications as mentioned above.

Sweet Side Streams: Sugar Beet Pulp as Source for High-Performance Supercapacitor Electrodes

Valorization of the lignocellulosic side and waste streams is key to making industrial processes more efficient from both an economic and ecological perspective. Currently, the production of sugars from beets results in pulps in large quantities. However, there is a lack of promising opportunities for upcycling these materials despite their promising properties. Here, we investigate beet pulps from two different stages of the sugar manufacturing process as raw materials for supercapacitor electrodes. We demonstrate that these materials can be efficiently converted to activated, highly porous carbons. The carbons exhibit pore dimensions approaching the size of the desolvated K+ and SO42- ions with surface areas up to 2600 m2 g-1. These carbons were subsequently manufactured into electrodes, assembled in supercapacitors, and tested with environmentally friendly aqueous electrolytes (6 M KOH and 1 M H2SO4). Further analysis demonstrated the presence of capacitance-enhancing functionalities, and up to 193 and 177 F g-1 in H2SO4 and KOH, respectively, were achieved, which outperformed supercapacitors prepared from commercial YP80 F. Overall, our study suggests that side streams from sugar manufacturing offer a hidden potential for use in high-performance energy storage devices.
