Strategic electrochemical oxidation of vinblastin sulfate (an anticancer drug) via PVP-functionalized strontium oxide nanoparticles

Cancer is a primary cause of death worldwide, and considerably impacts mortality rates in low- and middle-income countries. The rise in chemotherapeutic patients and toxicity of cytotoxic agents highlight the need for reliable analytical methods to detect these compounds. The current study presents a simple and straightforward method for producing polyvinylpyrrolidone functionalized strontium oxide nanoparticles (PVP-SrO NPs). The synthesized PVP-SrO NPs were applied as a sensitive sensor to detect vinblastin sulfate (VNB) (an anticancer drug). The synthesized PVP-SrO NPs were characterized using different characterization techniques. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) confirms the functionality of synthesized PVP-SrO NPs. The sharp intense peaks of X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD) confirm the crystalline nature of NPs, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) confirm the nanobeads like morphology, and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) reveals the presence of Sr and O at 68.3% and 23% respectively. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry studies revealed that the PVP-SrO/GCE is more conductive than bare GCE with an R ct value of 960.4 Ω compared to 2440 Ω. The sensor exhibited a wide linear dynamic range for VNB (0.05 to 60 μM) with low LOD 0.005 μM, and LOD 0.017 μM. The proposed sensor was successfully used for monitoring VNB in human blood serum samples with a satisfactory percent recovery from 96% to 103%. The fabricated sensor exhibits better performance than the reported sensors in terms of processing, simplicity, cost-effectiveness, energy consumption, and enhanced efficacy in a very short time.

Simple and low-cost colorimetric method for quantification of surface oxygen vacancy in zinc oxide

Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles with surface oxygen vacancy (OV) was found to catalyze the colorimetric reaction of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB)-H2O2, and the absorbance of this TMB-H2O2-ZnO system was strongly dependent the OV concentration on surface of ZnO. By taking advantage of this phenomenon, one colorimetric method was proposed for quantifying surface OV in ZnO. The surface OV amount obtained through this colorimetric method matched well with that obtained through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). This colorimetric method doesn't need any advanced instruments, and can be completed in any an ordinary laboratory. This colorimetric method for detecting surface OV amount was simple, rapid (about 15 min) and low-cost.

In vivo bioaccumulation and responses of hemocytes of mussels Perna viridis to microplastics and nanoplastics exposure

Growing micro- and nano-plastic (MNPs) pollution in the environment poses a threat to marine animals. Due to their excellent filtration capacity, bivalves can easily ingest MNPs, which could be translocated to open circulation system with potential risks. In the present study, the accumulation and elimination of MNPs (200 nm and 1 µm) in the mussel hemolymph serum and hemocytes were firstly quantified, and the differential sensitiveresponses of two subpopulations of hemocytes were then explored by in vivo exposure under environmentally relevant concentration of MNPs (200 µg/L). We demonstrated that MNPs were readily translocated into hemolymph serum, but were immediately followed by efficient internalization by hemocytes. Remarkably, concentrations of MNPs in hemolymph were only 0.63 and 0.39 times lower than the ambient exposure concentration. Granulocytes displayed a much higher potential of accumulating MNPs than the agranulocytes. MPs were more readily internalized by granulocytes, with their estimated maximum bioaccumulation factor (BCF) of 0.29 L/g. Due to the primary function of phagocytic encapsulation of MNPs by granulocytes, lysosome features especially the decline of subsequent lysosome membrane potential could be a potential sensitive biomarker in response to MNPs exposure. Our results provided insights on the bioaccumulation of MNPs at the cellular levels in marine bivalves.

Nanoplatform Based Intranasal Vaccines: Current Progress and Clinical Challenges

Multiple vaccine platforms have been employed to develop the nasal SARS-CoV-2 vaccines in preclinical studies, and the dominating pipelines are viral vectored as protein-based vaccines. Among them, several viral vectored-based vaccines have entered clinical development. Nevertheless, some unsatisfactory results were reported in these clinical studies. In the face of such urgent situations, it is imperative to rapidly develop the next-generation intranasal COVID-19 vaccine utilizing other technologies. Nanobased intranasal vaccines have emerged as an approach against respiratory infectious diseases. Harnessing the power of nanotechnology, these vaccines offer a noninvasive yet potent defense against pathogens, including the threat of COVID-19. The improvements made in vaccine mucosal delivery technologies based on nanoparticles, such as lipid nanoparticles, polymeric nanoparticles, inorganic nanoparticles etc., not only provide stability and controlled release but also enhance mucosal adhesion, effectively overcoming the limitations of conventional vaccines. Hence, in this review, we overview the evaluation of intranasal vaccine and highlight the current barriers. Next, the modern delivery systems based on nanoplatforms are summarized. The challenges in clinical application of nanoplatform based intranasal vaccine are finally discussed.

Electrospun PVP Fibers as Carriers of Ca2+ Ions to Improve the Osteoinductivity of Titanium-Based Dental Implants

Although titanium and its alloys are widely used as dental implants, they cannot induce the formation of new bone around the implant, which is a basis for the functional integrity and long-term stability of implants. This study focused on the functionalization of the titanium/titanium oxide surface as the gold standard for dental implants, with electrospun composite fibers consisting of polyvinylpyrrolidone and Ca2+ ions. Polymer fibers as carriers of Ca2+ ions should gradually dissolve, releasing Ca2+ ions into the environment of the implant when it is immersed in a model electrolyte of artificial saliva. Scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed the successful formation of a porous network of composite fibers on the titanium/titanium oxide surface. The mechanism of the formation of the composite fibers was investigated in detail by quantum chemical calculations at the density functional theory level based on the simulation of possible molecular interactions between Ca2+ ions, polymer fibers and titanium substrate. During the 7-day immersion of the functionalized titanium in artificial saliva, the processes on the titanium/titanium oxide/composite fibers/artificial saliva interface were monitored by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. It can be concluded from all the results that the composite fibers formed on titanium have application potential for the development of osteoinductive and thus more biocompatible dental implants.

Evaluation of the cytotoxicity and antibacterial activity of nano-selenium prepared via gamma irradiation against cancer cell lines and bacterial species

A recent scientific investigation has shown promising results of selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) for the anticancer and antimicrobial activities. This study aims to evaluate the effects of PVP SeNPs on bacterial strains, including Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), Bacillus cereus (B. cereus), Klebsiella pneumoniae (K. pneumoniae), Escherichia coli (E. coli), and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa). Also, its antitumor activity against the MRC-5 carcinoma cell line. SeNPs were prepared via gamma irradiation using PVP as a capping agent, and their size and morphological structure were determined using HRTEM. The size of the SeNPs ranged from 36 to 66.59 nm. UV-vis spectra confirmed the formation of SeNPs, while FTIR measurement confirmed a change in the PVP structure after adding selenium nanoparticles. The highest effect was reported on HepG2 by an IC50 with a value of 8.87 µg/ml, followed by HeLa, PC3, MCF-7, and Caco2 cell lines, respectively. Furthermore, ZOI reached 36.33 ± 3.05 mm. The best value of the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was 0.313 µg/ml. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) imaging against bacteria showed deformations and distortions in their structures. Transmission electron (TEM) revealed ultrastructure changes in treated bacteria because of the free radicals that made cytotoxicity which confirmed by Electron spin resonance (ESR).

Tailor-Made Gold Nanomaterials for Applications in Soft Bioelectronics and Optoelectronics

In modern nanoscience and nanotechnology, gold nanomaterials are indispensable building blocks that have demonstrated a plethora of applications in catalysis, biology, bioelectronics, and optoelectronics. Gold nanomaterials possess many appealing material properties, such as facile control over their size/shape and surface functionality, intrinsic chemical inertness yet with high biocompatibility, adjustable localized surface plasmon resonances, tunable conductivity, wide electrochemical window, etc. Such material attributes have been recently utilized for designing and fabricating soft bioelectronics and optoelectronics. This motivates to give a comprehensive overview of this burgeoning field. The discussion of representative tailor-made gold nanomaterials, including gold nanocrystals, ultrathin gold nanowires, vertically aligned gold nanowires, hard template-assisted gold nanowires/gold nanotubes, bimetallic/trimetallic gold nanowires, gold nanomeshes, and gold nanosheets, is begun. This is followed by the description of various fabrication methodologies for state-of-the-art applications such as strain sensors, pressure sensors, electrochemical sensors, electrophysiological devices, energy-storage devices, energy-harvesting devices, optoelectronics, and others. Finally, the remaining challenges and opportunities are discussed.

Phytochemical-Based Nanoantioxidants Stabilized with Polyvinylpyrrolidone for Enhanced Antibacterial, Antioxidant, and Anti-Inflammatory Activities

Despite the inhibitory effect of phytoncide (Pht) on food-borne pathogenic bacterial growth, the hydrophobic nature and susceptibility to biodegradation under physiological conditions limits its applications. Here, we developed Pht-loaded polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) micelles (Pht@PVP MC) via micelle packing. Pht was solubilized using different types of PVP as micellar vehicles. The as-prepared Pht@PVP MCs were characterized using dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy. The sizes of the Pht@PVP MCs were controlled from 301 ± 51 to 80 ± 3 nm by adjusting the PVP content. The polydispersity index of Pht@PVP MC was between 0.21 ± 0.03 and 0.16 ± 0.04, indicating homogeneous size. A colony-counting method was employed to evaluate the improvement in antibacterial activity after Pht encapsulation in PVP micelles. The reactive oxygen species (ROS)-scavenging activity and anti-inflammatory efficacy of Pht@PVP MC were analyzed in a concentration range of 10-100 μg/mL by evaluating in vitro ROS and nitric oxide levels using DCFDA and Griess reagents. PVP with both hydrophobic and hydrophilic moieties improved the aqueous solubility of Pht and stabilized it via steric hindrance. Higher-molecular-weight PVP at higher concentrations resulted in a smaller hydrodynamic diameter of Pht@PVP MC with uniform size distribution. The spherical Pht@PVP MC maintained its size and polydispersity index in a biological buffer for 2 weeks. Pht@PVP MC exhibited enhanced antibacterial activity compared to bare Pht. The growth of Staphylococcus aureus was effectively inhibited by Pht@PVP MC treatment. Furthermore, biocompatible Pht@PVP MC exhibited dose-dependent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities in vitro. Overall, Pht@PVP MC is an effective alternative to synthetic antibacterial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory chemicals.

Cu2+-Assisted Synthesis of Ultrasharp and Sub-10 nm Gold Nanostars. Applications in Catalysis, Sensing, and Photothermia

Gold nanostars have shown enormous potential as the main enablers of advanced applications ranging from biomedicine to sensing or catalysis. Their unique anisotropic structure featuring sharp spikes that grow from a central core offers enhanced optical capabilities and spectral tunability. Although several synthesis methods yield NSs of different morphologies and sizes up to several hundred nanometers, obtaining small NSs, while maintaining their plasmonic properties in the near-infrared, has proven challenging and elusive. Here, we show that Cu2+ addition during NS synthesis in polyvinylpyrrolidone/dimethylformamide generates more crystallographic defects and promotes the directional growth, giving rise to NSs with a larger number of much sharper spikes. They are also formed at smaller volumes, enabling the generation of ultrasmall nanostars, with a volume as small as 421 nm3 (i.e., 9.2 nm of volume-equivalent diameter), while maintaining a plasmon resonance in the near-infrared. To this end, we systematically evaluate the influence of synthesis parameters on the nanostar size and optical characteristics and demonstrate their properties for applications in catalysis, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy sensing, and hyperthermia. The ultrasmall nanostars show excellent attributes in all of them, leveraging their small size to enhance properties related to a higher surface-to-volume ratio or colloidal diffusivity.

Fluorinated polymer zwitterions on gold nanoparticles: patterned catalyst surfaces guide interfacial transport and electrochemical CO2 reduction

We report the use of fluorinated polymer zwitterions to build hybrid systems for efficient CO2 electroreduction. The unique combination of hydrophilic phosphorylcholine and hydrophobic fluorinated moieties in these polymers creates a fractal structure with mixed branched cylinders on the surface of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). In the presence of these polymers, the CO faradaic efficiency improves by 50-80% in the range of -0.7 V to -0.9 V. The fractal structures have a domain size of ∼3 nm, showing enhanced mass transfer kinetics of CO2 approaching the catalyst surfaces without limiting ion diffusion. The phase-separated hydrophilic and hydrophobic domains offer separated channeling to water and CO2, as confirmed by attenuated total reflectance surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy (ATR-SEIRAS) and molecule dynamic (MD) simulations. H2O molecules permeate extensively into the polymer layer that adsorbs on zwitterions, forming continuous chains, while CO2 molecules strongly associate with the fluorinated tails of fluorinated polyzwitterions, with oxygen facing the positively charged amine groups. Overall, this coupling of zwitterion and fluorocarbon in a polymer material creates new opportunities for defining microenvironments of metallic nanocatalysts in hybrid structures.

Ion Current Rectification Activity Induced by Boron Hydride Nanosheets to Enhance Magnesium Analgesia

The limited analgesic efficiency of magnesium restricts its application in pain management. Here, we report boron hydride (BH) with ion currents rectification activity that can enhance the analgesic efficiency of magnesium without the risks of drug tolerance or addiction. We synthesize MgB2, comprising hexagonal boron sheets alternating with Mg2+. In pathological environment, Mg2+ is exchanged by H+, forming two-dimensional borophene-analogue BH sheets. BH interacts with the charged cations via cation-pi interaction, leading to dynamic modulation of sodium and potassium ion currents around neurons. Additionally, released Mg2+ competes Ca2+ to inhibit its influx and neuronal excitation. In vitro cultured dorsal root neurons show a remarkable increase in threshold potential from the normal -35.9 mV to -5.9 mV after the addition of MgB2, indicating potent analgesic effect. In three typical pain models, including CFA-induced inflammatory pain, CINP- or CCI-induced neuropathic pain, MgB2 exhibits analgesic efficiency approximately 2.23, 3.20, and 2.0 times higher than clinical MgSO4, respectively, and even about 1.04, 1.66, and 1.95 times higher than morphine, respectively. The development of magnesium based intermetallic compounds holds promise in addressing the non-opioid medical need for pain relief.

Meso-Macroporous Hydroxyapatite Powders Synthesized in Polyvinyl Alcohol or Polyvinylpyrrolidone Media

Mesoporous hydroxyapatite (HA) is widely used in various applications, such as the biomedical field, as a catalytic, as a sensor, and many others. The aim of this work was to obtain HA powders by means of chemical precipitation in a medium containing a polymer-polyvinyl alcohol or polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)-with concentrations ranging from 0 to 10%. The HA powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, atomic emission spectroscopy with inductively coupled plasma, electron paramagnetic resonance, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The specific surface area (SSA), pore volume, and pore size distributions were determined by low-temperature nitrogen adsorption measurements, and the zeta potential was established. The formation of macropores in powder agglomerates was determined using SEM and TEM. The synthesis in 10% PVP increased the SSA from 101.3 to 158.0 m2/g, while the ripening for 7 days led to an increase from 112.3 to 195.8 m2/g, with the total pore volume rising from 0.37 to 0.71 cm3/g. These materials could be classified as meso-macroporous HA. Such materials can serve as the basis for various applications requiring improved textural properties and may lay the foundation for the creation of bulk 3D materials using a technique that allows for the preservation of their unique pore structure.

Synthesis of aminopropyl triethoxysilane/melamine incorporated superhydrophilic membranes for simultaneous removal of oil, metals, and Salt ions from produced water

Water treatment has turned out to be more important in most societies due to the expansion of most economies and to advancement of industrialization. Developing efficient materials and technologies for water treatment is of high interest. Thin film nanocomposite membranes are regarded as the most effective membranes available for salts, hydrocarbon, and environmental pollutants removal. These membranes improve productivity while using less energy than conventional asymmetric membranes. Here, the polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes have been successfully modified via dip single-step coating by silica-aminopropyl triethoxysilane/trimesic acid/melamine nanocomposite (Si-APTES-TA-MM). The developed membranes were evaluated for separating the emulsified oil/water mixture, the surface wettability of the membrane materials is therefore essential. During the conditioning step, that is when the freshwater was introduced, the prepared membrane reached a flux of about 27.77 L m-2 h-1. However, when the contaminated water was introduced, the flux reached 18 L m-2 h-1, alongside an applied pressure of 400 kPa. Interestingly, during the first 8 h of the filtration test, the membrane showed 90 % rejection for ions including Mg2+, and SO42- and ≈100 % for organic pollutants including pentane, isooctane, toluene, and hexadecane. Also, the membrane showed 98 % rejection for heavy metals including strontium, lead, and cobalt ions. As per the results, the membrane could be recommended as a promising candidate to be used for a mixture of salt ions, hydrocarbons, and mixtures of heavy metals from wastewater.

An Integrated and Modular Compartmentalized Microfluidic System with Tunable Electrospun Porous Membranes for Epithelialized Organs-on-a-Chip

A modular and 3D compartmentalized microfluidic system with electrospun porous membranes (PMs) for epithelialized organ-on-a-chip systems is presented. Our novel approach involves direct deposition of polymer nanofibers onto a patterned poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) substrate using electrospinning, resulting in an integrated PM within the microfluidic chip. The in situ deposition of the PM eliminates the need for additional assembly processes. To demonstrate the high throughput membrane integration capability of our approach, we successfully deposited nanofibers onto various chip designs with complex microfluidic planar structures and expanded dimensions. We characterized and tested the fully PMMA chip by growing an epithelial monolayer using the Caco-2 cell line to study drug permeability. A comprehensive analysis of the bulk and surface properties of the membrane's fibers made of PMMA and polystyrene (PS) was conducted to determine the polymer with the best performance for cell culture and drug transport applications. The PMMA-based membrane, with a PMMA/PVP ratio of 5:1, allowed for the fabrication of a uniform membrane structure along the aligned nanofibers. By modulating the fiber diameter and total thickness of the membrane, we could adjust the membrane's porosity for specific cell culture applications. The PMMA-PVP nanofibers exhibited a low polydispersity index value, indicating monodispersed nanofibers and a more homogeneous and uniform fiber network. Both types of membranes demonstrated excellent mechanical integrity under medium perfusion flow rates. However, the PMMA-PVP composition offered a tailored porous structure with modulable porosity based on the fiber diameter and thickness. Our developed platform enables dynamic in vitro modeling of the epithelial barrier and has applications in drug transport and in vitro microphysiological systems.

Highly Drug-Loaded Nanoaggregate Microparticles for Pulmonary Delivery of Cyclosporin A

Introduction

Nanoparticles have the advantages of improving the solubility of poorly water-soluble drugs, facilitating the drug across biological barriers, and reducing macrophage phagocytosis in pulmonary drug delivery. However, nanoparticles have a small aerodynamic particle size, which makes it difficult to achieve optimal deposition when delivered directly to the lungs. Therefore, delivering nanoparticles to the lungs effectively has become a popular research topic.

Methods

Nanoaggregate microparticles were used as a pulmonary drug delivery strategy for the improvement of the bioavailability of cyclosporine A (CsA). The nanoaggregate microparticles were prepared with polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) as the excipient by combining the anti-solvent method and spray drying process. The physicochemical properties, aerodynamic properties, in vivo pharmacokinetics and inhalation toxicity of nanoaggregate microparticles were systematically evaluated.

Results

The optimal nanoparticles exhibited mainly spherical shapes with the particle size and zeta potential of 180.52 nm and -19.8 mV. The nanoaggregate microparticles exhibited irregular shapes with the particle sizes of less than 1.6 µm and drug loading (DL) values higher than 70%. Formulation NM-2 as the optimal nanoaggregate microparticles was suitable for pulmonary drug delivery and probably deposited in the bronchiole and alveolar region, with FPF and MMAD values of 89.62% and 1.74 μm. In addition, inhaled NM-2 had C max and AUC0-∞ values approximately 1.7-fold and 1.8-fold higher than oral cyclosporine soft capsules (Neoral®). The inhalation toxicity study suggested that pulmonary delivery of NM-2 did not result in lung function damage, inflammatory responses, or tissue lesions.

Conclusion

The novel nanoaggregate microparticles for pulmonary drug delivery could effectively enhance the relative bioavailability of CsA and had great potential for clinical application.

Iron/Molybdenum Sulfide Nanozyme Cocatalytic Fenton Reaction for Photothermal/Chemodynamic Efficient Wound Healing

The issue of bacterial infectious diseases remains a significant concern worldwide, particularly due to the misuse of antibiotics, which has caused the emergence of antibiotic-resistant strains. Fortunately, the rapid development of nanomaterials has propelled significant progress in antimicrobial therapy, offering promising solutions. Among them, the utilization of nanoenzyme-based chemodynamic therapy (CDT) has become a highly hopeful approach to combating bacterial infectious diseases. Nevertheless, the application of CDT appears to be facing certain constraints for its low efficiency in the Fenton reaction at the infected site. In this study, we have successfully synthesized a versatile nanozyme, which was a composite of molybdenum sulfide (MoS2) and iron sulfide (FeS2), through the hydrothermal method. The results showed that iron/molybdenum sulfide nanozymes (Fe/Mo SNZs) with desirable peroxidase (POD) mimic activity can generate cytotoxic reactive oxygen species (ROS) by successfully triggering the Fenton reaction. The presence of MoS2 significantly accelerates the conversion of Fe2+/Fe3+ through a cocatalytic reaction that involves the participation of redox pairs of Mo4+/Mo6+, thereby enhancing the efficiency of CDT. Additionally, based on the excellent photothermal performance of Fe/Mo SNZs, a near-infrared (NIR) laser was used to induce localized temperature elevation for photothermal therapy (PTT) and enhance the POD-like nanoenzymatic activity. Notably, both in vitro and in vivo results demonstrated that Fe/Mo SNZs with good broad-spectrum antibacterial properties can help eradicate Gram-negative bacteria like Escherichia coli and Gram-positive bacteria like Staphylococcus aureus. The most exciting thing is that the synergistic PTT/CDT exhibited astonishing antibacterial ability and can achieve complete elimination of bacteria, which promoted wound healing after infection. Overall, this study presents a synergistic PTT/CDT strategy to address antibiotic resistance, providing avenues and directions for enhancing the efficacy of wound healing treatments and offering promising prospects for further clinical use in the near future.

Molybdenum Disulfide-Assisted Spontaneous Formation of Multistacked Gold Nanoparticles for Deep Learning-Integrated Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering

Several fabrication methods have been developed for label-free detection in various fields. However, fabricating high-density and highly ordered nanoscale architectures by using soluble processes remains a challenge. Herein, we report a biosensing platform that integrates deep learning with surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), featuring large-area, close-packed three-dimensional (3D) architectures of molybdenum disulfide (MoS2)-assisted gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) for the on-site screening of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) using human tears. Some AuNPs are spontaneously synthesized without a reducing agent because the electrons induced on the semiconductor surface reduce gold ions when the Fermi level of MoS2 and the gold electrolyte reach equilibrium. With the addition of polyvinylpyrrolidone, a two-dimensional large-area MoS2 layer assisted in the formation of close-packed 3D multistacked AuNP structures, resembling electroless plating. This platform, with a convolutional neural network-based deep learning model, achieved outstanding SERS performance at subterascale levels despite the microlevel irradiation power and millisecond-level acquisition time and accurately assessed susceptibility to COVID-19. These results suggest that our platform has the potential for rapid, low-damage, and high-throughput label-free detection of exceedingly low analyte concentrations.

Quercetin encapsulated polycaprolactone-polyvinylpyrrolidone electrospun membranes as a delivery system for wound healing applications

The present work focuses on the production of electrospun membranes based on Poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) and Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) for the topical release of Quercetin (Q). Membranes were prepared at 0.5, 1.0, 3.0, 7.0 and 15 % wt of Quercetin and studied from a morphological, physical, and biological point of view. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) evidences micrometric dimensions of the fibres with a good dispersion of the functional molecule. The retention degree of liquids was evaluated by testing four different liquid media while the radical scavenging activity of Quercetin-loaded membranes was evaluated through DPPH analysis. The release kinetics of Quercetin highlights the presence of an initial burst followed by slower release up to attaining an equilibrium state, after roughly 50 h, showing the possibility of a fine-tuning of drug release. Diffusion coefficients were then evaluated by using Fick's law. Finally, to verify the actual biocompatibility of the systems produced and the possible application in the repair of tissue injury, the biological activity of Quercetin released from drug-loaded membranes was analysed in an immortalized human keratinocyte cell line HaCaT by a wound healing assay. So, the reported preliminary data confirm the possibility of applying the electrospun Quercetin-loaded PCL-PVP membranes for wound healing applications.

Surface Modifications of Superparamagnetic Iron Oxide Nanoparticles with Chitosan, Polyethylene Glycol, Polyvinyl Alcohol, and Polyvinylpyrrolidone as Methylene Blue Adsorbent Beads

Due to the negative impacts the dye may have on aquatic habitats and human health, it is often found in industrial effluent and poses a threat to public health. Hence, to solve this problem, this study developed magnetic adsorbents that can remove synthetic dyes like methylene blue. The adsorbent, in the form of beads, consists of a polymer blend of chitosan, polyethylene glycol, polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinylpyrrolidone, and superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (average size of 19.03 ± 4.25 nm). The adsorption and desorption of MB from beads were carried out at pH values of 7 and 3.85, respectively. At a concentration of 9 mg/L, the loading capacity and the loading amount of MB after 5 days peaked at 29.75 ± 1.53% and 297.48 ± 15.34 mg/g, respectively. Meanwhile, the entrapment efficiency of MB reached 29.42 ± 2.19% at a concentration of 8 mg/L. The cumulative desorption capacity of the adsorbent after 13 days was at its maximum at 7.72 ± 0.5%. The adsorption and desorption kinetics were evaluated.

Superlong cycle-life sodium-ion batteries supported by electrode/active material interaction and heteroatom doping: Mechanism and application

To achieve both the capacity and stability of metal sulfides simultaneously remains a significant challenge. In this study, we have synthesized the manganese-doped copper sulfide three-dimensional (3D) hollow flower-like sphere (M/CuS-NSC), encapsulated in a nitrogen and sulfur co-doped carbon. The hollow lamellae structure allows the rational self-aggregation process of numerous active surface area enlarged nanosheets, thereby enhancing electrochemical activity. The subsurface framework characterized by CSC bonds enhances the pseudo-capacitive properties. Furthermore, the transformation of sulfur and the isomerization of carbon contribute to the enhancement of sodium ion storage. The incorporation of Mn into CuS lattice increases the interplanar distance, providing additional space for the accommodation of sodium ions. Mn doping facilitates the localization of electrons near the Fermi level, thereby improving conductivity. Additionally, Cu foils coated with M/CuS-NSC-2 engage with the electrolyte and sulfur, initiating the reaction sequence through the formation of Cu9S8. Consequently, M/CuS-NSC-2 exhibits highly reversible capacities of 676.24 mAh g-1 after 100 cycles at 0.1 A g-1 and 511.52 mAh g-1 after 10000 cycles at 10 A g-1, with an average attenuation ratio of only 0.009 %. In this study, we propose an effective strategy that combines structural design with heteroatom doping, providing a novel approach to enhance the electrochemical performance of monometallic sulfide.

Carriers for hydrophobic drug molecules: lipid-coated hollow mesoporous silica particles, and the influence of shape and size on encapsulation efficiency

Hydrophobic drugs, while designed to interact with specific receptors or enzymes located in lipid-rich cell membranes, often face challenges of limited bioavailability and insufficient circulation time due to their insolubility in aqueous environments. One plausible pathway to increase their blood circulation time is to load these drugs into biocompatible and hydrophilic carriers to enhance their uptake. In this study, mesoporous silica (mSiO2) nanocarriers of various morphologies (including cubes, capsules, and spheres) were synthesized. These nanocarriers were then surface-functionalized with alkyl chain hydrocarbons, specifically octadecyl-trimethoxysilane, (OCH3)3Si(CH2)17CH3, to render them hydrophobic. The resulting nanocarriers (((OCH3)3Si(CH2)17CH3)@mSiO2) showed up to 80% uptake for hydrophobic drugs. However, a significant drawback was observed as most of the drugs were prone to uncontrollable release within 6 h. This challenge of premature drug release was successfully mitigated by effectively sealing the drug-loaded nanocarriers with a pH-sensitive lipid overlayer. The lipid-coated nanocarriers prolonged drug containment and sustained release up to 72 h, compared to 6 h for uncoated nanocarriers, thereby facilitating longer blood circulation times. Moreover, the shape and size of nanocarriers were found to influence both drug entrapment capacity and release behavior with cubic forms exhibiting superior loading capacity due to higher surface area and porosity. Additionally, it was observed that the molecular weight and chemical structure of the drug molecules played a crucial role in determining their uptake and release profiles. Furthermore, the influence of different morphologies of nanocarriers on cell uptake and cytotoxicity in immune cells was elucidated. These findings underscore the importance of nanocarrier morphology and drug properties to enhance loading capacities and controlled release profiles, for designing drug delivery systems tailored for hydrophobic drugs.

Role of polyvinylpyrrolidone in the polyol synthesis of platinum nanoparticles

In this work, platinum (Pt) nanoparticles (NPs) were prepared via the reduction of Pt salts in an ethylene glycol induced polyol process with an altered polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)/Pt molar ratio. With the systematic elucidation of the hydrodynamic size in a liquid; the solid-state size and morphology, crystal structure, surface chemical state and thermal decomposition behavior of the synthesized Pt NPs; as well as the reducing dynamic of Pt cations, the role of PVP in the polyol synthesis of Pt NPs is clarified for the first time. It was found that the amount of PVP does not affect the reducing dynamic of Pt cations, but the chemical state of PVP capped on Pt NPs and the resultant particle size significantly depend on the initial PVP/Pt molar ratio in the precursor solution. Dense-packed PVP via the chemisorption of carbonyl oxygen on the surface of Pt NPs occurs in the case of a higher PVP/Pt ratio, suppressing particle growth and resulting in smaller Pt NPs. On the contrary, the chemical structure of PVP is tuned by the cleavage of the N-C bond and results in the chemisorption of the N atom on the surface of Pt NPs, which promotes the production of larger Pt NPs when a lower PVP/Pt ratio is applied.

Dual Drug-Loaded Coaxial Nanofiber Dressings for the Treatment of Diabetic Foot Ulcer

Introduction

Diabetes mellitus is frequently associated with foot ulcers, which pose significant health risks and complications. Impaired wound healing in diabetic patients is attributed to multiple factors, including hyperglycemia, neuropathy, chronic inflammation, oxidative damage, and decreased vascularization.

Rationale

To address these challenges, this project aims to develop bioactive, fast-dissolving nanofiber dressings composed of polyvinylpyrrolidone loaded with a combination of an antibiotic (moxifloxacin or fusidic acid) and anti-inflammatory drug (pirfenidone) using electrospinning technique to prevent the bacterial growth, reduce inflammation, and expedite wound healing in diabetic wounds.

Results

The fabricated drug-loaded fibers exhibited diameters of 443 ± 67 nm for moxifloxacin/pirfenidone nanofibers and 488 ± 92 nm for fusidic acid/pirfenidone nanofibers. The encapsulation efficiency, drug loading and drug release studies for the moxifloxacin/pirfenidone nanofibers were found to be 70 ± 3% and 20 ± 1 µg/mg, respectively, for moxifloxacin, and 96 ± 6% and 28 ± 2 µg/mg, respectively, for pirfenidone, with a complete release of both drugs within 24 hours, whereas the fusidic acid/pirfenidone nanofibers were found to be 95 ± 6% and 28 ± 2 µg/mg, respectively, for fusidic acid and 102 ± 5% and 30 ± 2 µg/mg, respectively, for pirfenidone, with a release rate of 66% for fusidic acid and 80%, for pirfenidone after 24 hours. The efficacy of the prepared nanofiber formulations in accelerating wound healing was evaluated using an induced diabetic rat model. All tested formulations showed an earlier complete closure of the wound compared to the controls, which was also supported by the histopathological assessment. Notably, the combination of fusidic acid and pirfenidone nanofibers demonstrated wound healing acceleration on day 8, earlier than all tested groups.

Conclusion

These findings highlight the potential of the drug-loaded nanofibrous system as a promising medicated wound dressing for diabetic foot applications.

In Situ Generation of Nanoparticles on and within Polymeric Materials

It is well-established that the structural, morphological and performance characteristics of nanoscale materials critically depend upon the dispersion state of the nanofillers that is, in turn, largely determined by the preparation protocol. In this report, we review synthetic strategies that capitalise on the in situ generation of nanoparticles on and within polymeric materials, an approach that relies on the chemical transformation of suitable precursors to functional nanoparticles synchronous with the build-up of the nanohybrid systems. This approach is distinctively different compared to standard preparation methods that exploit the dispersion of preformed nanoparticles within the macromolecular host and presents advantages in terms of time and cost effectiveness, environmental friendliness and the uniformity of the resulting composites. Notably, the in situ-generated nanoparticles tend to nucleate and grow on the active sites of the macromolecular chains, showing strong adhesion on the polymeric host. So far, this strategy has been explored in fabrics and membranes comprising metallic nanoparticles (silver, gold, platinum, copper, etc.) in relation to their antimicrobial and antifouling applications, while proof-of-concept demonstrations for carbon- and silica-based nanoparticles as well as titanium oxide-, layered double hydroxide-, hectorite-, lignin- and hydroxyapatite-based nanocomposites have been reported. The nanocomposites thus prepared are ideal candidates for a broad spectrum of applications such as water purification, environmental remediation, antimicrobial treatment, mechanical reinforcement, optical devices, etc.

Heterogeneous electro-Fenton removal of polyacrylamide in aqueous solution over CoFe2O4 catalyst

Polyacrylamide (PAM) in environmental water has become a major problem in water pollution management due to its high molecular mass, high viscosity and non-absorption by soil. CoFe2O4 with strong magnetic properties was prepared by solvent-thermal synthesis method and used as the catalyst for the removal on PAM in heterogeneous Electro-Fenton (EF) system. It showed that the removal efficiency of PAM by the heterogeneous EF system using CoFe2O4 catalyst was 92.01% at pH 3 after 120 min. Further studies indicated that ·OH was the most significant active species for the removal of PAM, and the contribution of ·O2- and SO4·- for the removal of PAM was less than 15%. The reusability test and XRD, XPS, FTIR analyses proved that the catalyst had good stability. After a repeated use for five times, the catalyst still had a high PAM removal rate and stable structure. The valence distribution and functional groups of the phase components of the catalyst did not change significantly before and after the reaction. The possible mechanism of catalyst activation of H2O2 was deduced by mechanism investigation. The CoFe2O4 is an efficient and promising catalyst for the removal of PAM wastewater.

Hyaluronic acid-oleylamine and chitosan-oleic acid conjugate-based hybrid nanoparticle delivery via. dissolving microneedles for enhanced treatment efficacy in localized breast cancer

Microneedle technology offers a minimally invasive treatment strategy to deliver chemotherapeutics to localized tumors. Amalgamating the surface functionalized nanoparticles with microneedle technology can potentially deliver drugs directly to tumors and subsequently target cancer cells via, overexpressed receptors on the cell surface, thereby enhancing the treatment efficacy while reducing side effects. Here, we report cetuximab anchored hyaluronic acid-oleylamine and chitosan-oleic acid-based hybrid nanoparticle (HA-OA/CS-OA NPT)-loaded dissolving microneedles (MN) for targeted delivery of cabazitaxel (CBT) in localized breast cancer tumor. The HA-OA/CS-OA NPT was characterized for their size, surface charge, morphology, physicochemical characteristics, drug release behavior, and in vitro anti-cancer efficacy. The HA-OA/CS-OA NPT were of ~125 nm size, showed enhanced cytotoxicity and cellular uptake, and elicited a superior apoptotic response against MDA-MB-231 cells. Subsequently, the morphology and physicochemical characteristics of HA-OA/CS-OA NPT-loaded MN were also evaluated. The fabricated microneedles were of ~550 μm height and showed loading of nanoparticles equivalent to ~250 μg of CBT. The ex vivo skin permeation study revealed fast dissolution of microneedles upon hydration, while the drug permeation across the skin exhibited ~4-fold improvement in comparison to free drug-loaded MN. In vivo studies performed on DMBA-induced breast cancer in female SD rats showed a marked reduction in tumor volume after administration of drug and nanoparticle-loaded microneedles in comparison to intravenous administration of free drug. However, the HA-OA/CS-OA NPT-MN showed the highest tumor reduction and survival rate, with the lowest body weight reduction in comparison to other treatment groups, indicating its superior efficacy and low systemic toxicity. Overall, the dissolving microneedle-mediated delivery of targeted nanoparticles loaded with chemotherapeutics offers a superior alternative to conventional intravenous chemotherapy.

Nanoarchitectonics of Bactericidal Coatings Based on CaCO3-Nanosilver Hybrids

Antimicrobial coatings provide protection against microbes colonization on surfaces. This can prevent the stabilization and proliferation of microorganisms. The ever-increasing levels of microbial resistance to antimicrobials are urging the development of alternative types of compounds that are potent across broad spectra of microorganisms and target different pathways. This will help to slow down the development of resistance and ideally halt it. The development of composite antimicrobial coatings (CACs) that can host and protect various antimicrobial agents and release them on demand is an approach to address this urgent need. In this work, new CACs based on microsized hybrids of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were designed using a drop-casting technique. Polyvinylpyrrolidone and mucin were used as additives. The CaCO3/AgNPs hybrids contributed to endowing colloidal stability to the AgNPs and controlling their release, thereby ensuring the antibacterial activity of the coatings. Moreover, the additives PVP and mucin served as a matrix to (i) control the distribution of the hybrids, (ii) ensure mechanical integrity, and (iii) prevent the undesired release of AgNPs. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) techniques were used to characterize the 15 μm thick CAC. The antibacterial activity was determined against Escherichia coli, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, three bacteria responsible for many healthcare infections. Antibacterial performance of the hybrids was demonstrated at concentrations between 15 and 30 μg/cm2. Unloaded CaCO3 also presented bactericidal properties against MRSA. In vitro cytotoxicity tests demonstrated that the hybrids at bactericidal concentrations did not affect human dermal fibroblasts and human mesenchymal stem cell viability. In conclusion, this work presents a simple approach for the design and testing of advanced multicomponent and functional antimicrobial coatings that can protect active agents and release them on demand.

Advanced Functionalized Nanoclusters (Cu, Ag, and Au) as Effective Catalyst for Organic Transformation Reactions

A considerable amount of research has been carried out in recent years on synthesizing metal nanoclusters (NCs), which have wide applications in the field of optical materials with non-linear properties, bio-sensing, and catalysis. Aside from being structurally accurate, the atomically precise NCs possess well-defined compositions due to significant tailoring, both at the surface and the core, for certain functionalities. To illustrate the importance of atomically precise metal NCs for catalytic processes, this review emphasizes 1) the recent work on Cu, Ag, and Au NCs with their synthesis, 2) the parameters affecting the activity and selectivity of NCs catalysis, and 3) the discussion on the catalytic potential of these metal NCs. Additionally, metal NCs will facilitate the design of extremely active and selective catalysts for significant reactions by elucidating catalytic mechanisms at the atomic and molecular levels. Future advancements in the science of catalysis are expected to come from the potential to design NCs catalysts at the atomic level.

Hydrothermal Synthesis of Rod Shaped Red Emitting Gd2O3:Eu3+ Phosphor

Simple hydrothermal method can be applied for synthesizing rod shape Gd2O3:Eu3+ phosphors. X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy are used for the characterizations of samples. Increase of Eu3+ concentration in Gd2O3:Eu3+ can cause red shift in the charge transfer band (CTB) of Eu - O. The nature of Eu3+ surroundings is asymmetric. It is ascertained from PL emission studies. The calculation of second order crystal field parameter from PL spectra corroborates the asymmetric environment of Eu3+. PL emission and decay lifetime studies confirm the existence of quenching due cross-relaxation. The quantum yield for Y2O3:Eu3+ (19 at.%) under 265 nm excitation is found to be 7%.

Nonionic polymer and amino acid-assisted synthesis of ZSM-5 nanocrystals and their catalytic application in the alkylation of 2-methylnaphthalene

The synthesis of nanosized ZSM-5 zeolites with high crystallinity and suitable acidity is very significant for their great potential in various catalytic applications. Herein, a series of zeolite ZSM-5 crystals with different particle sizes and SiO2/Al2O3 ratios (10-30) were synthesized by a temperature-varying two-step crystallization method in a concentrated gel system containing L-lysine and/or polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) additives. By optimizing the addition amounts of the two additives, the crystal size of the ZSM-5 zeolite could be reduced to less than 100 nm. Meanwhile, relatively high crystallinity and framework Al incorporation rates could be achieved, resulting in the generation of high-quality ZSM-5 nanocrystals. The nanosized H-form ZSM-5 zeolite with a SiO2/Al2O3 ratio of 20 showed enhanced catalytic efficiency and stability for the alkylation of 2-methylnaphthalene (2-MN) with methanol to produce an important intermediate, 2,6-dimethylnaphthalene (2,6-DMN). A relatively high and steady yield of 2,6-DMN (above 7.2%) could be achieved during 20 h time-on-stream at 400 °C. The smaller crystal size, higher crystallinity and framework Al content could provide more accessible Brønsted acid sites in the 10-membered ring channel of the ZSM-5 nanocrystals, which are the main active sites responsible for the shape-selectivity of the targeted product of 2,6-DMN. As a result, the formation of other side products like 1-MN and poly-MN could be effectively inhibited, thus leading to an improved 2,6-DMN yield and coke resistance over the nanosized ZSM-5 catalyst.

Preparation of Gel Forming Polymer-Based Sprays for First Aid Care of Skin Injuries

Currently, there are several types of materials for the treatment of wounds, burns, and other topical injuries available on the market. The most used are gauzes and compresses due to their fluid absorption capacity; however, these materials adhere to the surface of the lesions, which can lead to further bleeding and tissue damage upon removal. In the present study, the development of a polymer-based gel that can be applied as a spray provides a new vision in injury protection, respecting the requirements of safety, ease, and quickness of both applicability and removal. The following polymeric sprays were developed to further obtain gels based on different polymers: hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC), polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) using polyethylene glycol (PEG) as a plasticizer. The developed sprays revealed suitable properties for use in topical injuries. A protective film was obtained when sprayed on a surface through a casting mechanism. The obtained films adhered to the surface of biological tissue (pig muscle), turning into a gel when the exudate was absorbed, and proved to be washable with saline solution and contribute to the clotting process. Moreover, biocompatibility results showed that all materials were biocompatible, as cell viability was over 90% for all the materials.

Synthesis of Hydrophilic Poly(vinylpyrrolidone)/CuS Free-Standing Thin Films Exhibiting Photothermal Conversion

Free-standing films without the need for any support materials attract attention because of their excellent flexibility in use and ability to be transferred to various substrates. However, free-standing films containing large amounts of inorganic crystalline particles are hard to achieve due to their low strength. In this study, we found the possibility of preparing a free-standing composite film of CuS/polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) at a large loading of CuS (>50%) from a concentrated colloidal dispersion of CuS nanoparticles modified with PVP. Despite the large amount of inorganic crystals contained in the free-standing film, the film was strong enough to be handled without any support materials. As a proof-of-concept application of the free-standing film, a solar water evaporation experiment was performed. The CuS/PVP free-standing film exhibited photothermal conversion under light illumination to generate heat and accelerate water evaporation, achieving an evaporation rate of 4.35 kg·m-2 h-1 and an evaporation efficiency of 96.3% at a power density of 3 suns. In addition, thanks to the free-standing feature, one side of the CuS/PVP film could be hydrophobized with polydimethylsiloxane to form a Janus thin film, allowing for floating on the water surface. As a result, effective water evaporation was achieved because of the selective evaporation of water from the air/water interface.

Data-Driven Controlled Synthesis of Oriented Quasi-Spherical CsPbBr3 Perovskite Materials

Controlled synthesis of lead-halide perovskite crystals is challenging yet attractive because of the pivotal role played by the crystal structure and growth conditions in regulating their properties. This study introduces data-driven strategies for the controlled synthesis of oriented quasi-spherical CsPbBr3, alongside an investigation into the synthesis mechanism. High-throughput rapid characterization of absorption spectra and color under ultraviolet illumination was conducted using 23 possible ligands for the synthesis of CsPbBr3 crystals. The links between the absorption spectra slope (difference in the absorbance at 400 nm and 450 nm divided by a wavelength interval of 50 nm) and crystal size were determined through statistical analysis of more than 100 related publications. Big data analysis and machine learning were employed to investigate a total of 688 absorption spectra and 652 color values, revealing correlations between synthesis parameters and properties. Ex situ characterization confirmed successful synthesis of oriented quasi-spherical CsPbBr3 perovskites using polyvinylpyrrolidone and Acacia. Density functional theory calculations highlighted strong adsorption of Acacia on the (110) facet of CsPbBr3. Optical properties of the oriented quasi-spherical perovskites prepared with these data-driven strategies were significantly improved. This study demonstrates that data-driven controlled synthesis facilitates morphology-controlled perovskites with excellent optical properties.

Effect of phosphoric acid containing polyvinylpyrrolidone as protective etchant for dentin bonding

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Phosphoric acid is commonly used in dentistry as an etchant but can result in excessive demineralization of dentin, a major contributor to the instability of dentin-bonded restorations. Nevertheless, research on the development of etchants that can reduce acid damage is sparse.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate the effects of polyvinylpyrrolidone-modified phosphoric acid on the dentin bonding of an etch-and-rinse adhesive.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Protective etchants were prepared by adding polyvinylpyrrolidone to 35% phosphoric acid aqueous solutions: the 3 concentrations were 0.5% (P0.5% group), 1% (P1% group), and 2% (P2% group) w/v. The treatment agent of the control group (C) was 35% phosphoric acid gel. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), microhardness, microtensile bonding strength (µTBS), nanoleakage, and in situ zymography were used to evaluate the appearance of the protective etchant on dentin bonding. The results were analyzed with a 1-way ANOVA test (α=.05).

RESULTS

SEM showed no obviously exposed collagen fiber in the P1% and P2% groups. FTIR showed less demineralization of the dentin surface, and microhardness was higher after treatment with the protective etchant (P<.05). The µTBS of P1% (70 ±9.2 MPa) was the highest, and group C (44 ±5.8 MPa) was the lowest in all groups (P<.05). Moreover, there was weaker MMP activity in the P1% and P2% groups (P<.05).

CONCLUSIONS

This study demonstrated that the protective etchant effectively reduced demineralization, enhanced bond strength, and reduced nanoleakage and enzyme activity within the hybrid layer.

Transport and retention of functionalized graphene oxide nanoparticles in saturated/unsaturated porous media: Effects of flow velocity, ionic strength and initial particle concentration

The widespread use of nanomaterials has raised the threat of nanoparticles (NPs) infection of soils and groundwater resources. This research aims to investigate three parameters including flow velocity, ionic strength (IS), and initial particle concentration effects on transport behavior and retention mechanism of functionalization form of graphene oxide with polyvinylpyrrolidone (GO-PVP). The transport of GO-PVP was investigated in a laboratory-scale study through saturated/unsaturated (Saturation Degree = 0.91) sand columns. Experiments were conducted on flow velocity from 1.20 to 2.04 cm min-1, initial particle concentration from 10 to 50 mg L-1, and IS of 5-20 mM. The retention of GO-PVP was best described using the one-site kinetic attachment model in HYDRUS-1D, which accounted for the time and depth-dependent retention. According to breakthrough curves (BTCs), the lower transport related to the rate of mass recovery of GO-PVP was obtained by decreasing flow velocity and initial particle concentration and increasing IS through the sand columns. Increasing IS could improve the GO-PVP retention (based on katt and Smax) in saturated/unsaturated media; katt increases from 2.81 × 10-3 to 3.54 × 10-3 s-1 and Smax increases from 0.37 to 0.42 mg g-1 in saturated/unsaturated conditions, respectively. Our findings showed that the increasing retention of GO-PVP through the sand column under unsaturated condition could be recommended for the reduction of nanoparticles danger of ecosystem exposure.

Effect of PVP Molecular Weights on the Synthesis of Ultrasmall Cus Nanoflakes: Synthesis, Properties, and Potential Application for Phototheranostics

Copper sulfide nanoparticles (CuS) hold tremendous potential for applications in photothermal therapy (PTT) and photoacoustic imaging (PAI). However, the conventional chemical coprecipitation method often leads to particle agglomeration issues. To overcome this challenge, we utilized polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as a stabilizing agent, resulting in the synthesis of small PVP-CuS nanoparticles named PC10, PCK30, and PC40. Our study aimed to investigate how different molecular weights of PVP influence the nanoparticles' crystalline characteristics and essential properties, especially their photoacoustic and photothermal responses. While prior research on PVP-assisted CuS nanoparticles has been conducted, our study delves deeper into this area, providing insights into optical properties. Remarkably, all synthesized nanoparticles exhibited a crystalline structure, were smaller than 10 nm, and featured an absorbance peak at 1020 nm, indicating their robust photoacoustic and photothermal capabilities. Among these nanoparticles, PC10 emerged as the standout performer, displaying superior photoacoustic properties. Our photothermal experiments demonstrated significant temperature increases in all cases, with PC10 achieving an impressive efficiency of 51%. Moreover, cytotoxicity assays revealed the nanoparticles' compatibility with cells, coupled with an enhanced incidence of apoptosis compared to necrosis. These findings underscore the promising potential of PVP-stabilized CuS nanoparticles for advanced cancer theranostics.

PEG-PVP-Assisted Hydrothermal Synthesis and Electrochemical Performance of N-Doped MoS2/C Composites as Anode Material for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Molybdenum disulfide shows promise as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries. However, its commercial potential has been constrained due to the poor conductivity and significant volume expansion during the charge/discharge cycles. To address these issues, in this study, N-doped MoS2/C composites (NMC) were prepared via an enhanced hydrothermal method, using ammonium molybdate and thiourea as molybdenum and sulfur sources, respectively. Polyethylene glycol 400 (PEG400) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) were added in the hydrothermal procedure as soft template surfactants and nitrogen/carbon sources. The crystal structure, morphology, elemental composition, and surface valence state of the N-doped MoS2/C composites were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), respectively. The results indicate that the NMC prepared by this method are spherical particles with a nanoflower-like structure composed of MoS2 flakes, having an average particle size of about 500 nm. XPS analysis shows the existence of C and N elements in the samples as C-N, C-C, and pyrrolic N. As anodes for LIBs, the NMC without annealing deliver an initial discharge capacity of 548.2 mAh·g-1 at a current density of 500 mA·g-1. However, this capacity decays in the following cycles with a discharge capacity of 66.4 mAh·g-1 and a capacity retention rate of only 12% after 50 cycles. In contrast, the electrochemical properties of the counterparts are enhanced after annealing, which exhibits an initial discharge capacity of 575.9 mAh·g-1 and an ultimate discharge capacity of 669.2 mAh·g-1 after 70 cycles. The capacity retention rate decreases initially but later increases and elevated afterward to reach 116% at the 70th cycle, indicating an improvement in charge-discharge performance. The specimens after annealing have a smaller impedance, which indicates better charge transport and lithium-ion diffusion performance.

Microwave-assisted synthesis of silver nanoparticles as a colorimetric sensor for hydrogen peroxide

To consider silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) as a colorimetric sensor for H2O2 we require investigation of the effects of the homogeneity of the nanoparticle size and morphology on the sensor parameters. Uniformly-sized Ag nanoparticles with diameters of ∼18.8 ± 2.8 nm were produced using microwave irradiation (AgNP1) but non-uniform particles with diameters of ∼71.2 ± 19.4 nm (AgNP2) were formed without microwave irradiation. Microwave synthesis produced AgNP1 with superiority in terms of repeatability, selectivity and sensor stability for up to eight months of storage over AgNP2. AgNP1 exhibited higher sensitivity and detection limits in the working range of 0.01-40000 μM as compared to AgNP2. The application of the AgNP sensor to milk samples provided recovery values of 99.09-100.56% for AgNP1 and 98.18-101.90% for AgNP2. Microwave irradiation resulted in strong and uniform PVP-Ag interactions for isotropic growth into small nanoparticles. Size and morphology uniformity determined the characteristics of the AgNP sensor that can be applied for H2O2 detection in a wide range of concentrations and real-time evaluation, with the potential for industrial applications.

Hollow Hierarchical Porous and Antihydrolytic Spherical Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks for Enzyme Encapsulation and Biocatalysis

The creation of a new metal-organic framework (MOF) with a hollow hierarchical porous structure has gained significant attention in the realm of enzyme immobilization. The present work employed a novel, facile, and effective combinatorial technique to synthesize modified MOF (N-PVP/HZIF-8) with a hierarchically porous core-shell structure, allowing for the preservation of the structural integrity of the encapsulated enzyme molecules. Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, confocal laser scanning microscopy, and other characterization tools were used to fully explore the changes of morphological structure and surface properties in different stages of the preparation of immobilization enzyme CRL-N-PVP/HZIF-8, thus showing the superiority of N-PVP/HZIF-8 as an enzyme immobilization platform and the logic of the immobilization process on the carrier. Additionally, the maximum enzyme loading was 216.3 mg mL-1, the relative activity of CRL-N-PVP/HZIF-8 increased by 15 times compared with the CRL@ZIF-8 immobilized in situ, and exhibited quite good thermal, chemical, and operational stability. With a maximal conversion of 88.8%, CRL-N-PVP/HZIF-8 demonstrated good catalytic performance in the biosynthesis of phytosterol esters as a proof of concept. It is anticipated that this work will offer fresh concepts from several perspectives for the creation of MOF-based immobilized enzymes for biotechnological uses.

Large-Scale Syntheses of Multicolor Stimulus Responsive Room-Temperature Phosphorescent Polymer-Carbonyl-Modified Carbon Nitrogen Quantum Dots

Carbonyl-modified solid-state carbon nitrogen quantum dots (m-O═CNQDs) have emerged as promising room-temperature phosphorescent (RTP) materials close to commercialization. However, high-crystallinity m-O═CNQDs are insensitive to external stimuli such as water and heat due to strong stacking interactions between layers, restricting their applications in stimulus responsive fields. Here, a polymer template space-confined growth strategy is established for the large-scale synthesis of water stimulus responsive polyvinylpyrrolidone-functionalized m-O═CNQDs with ultralong room-temperature phosphorescence (181 ms) using urea and PVP as precursors. Theoretical and experimental results indicate that the PVP template linked at the rim of m-O═CNQDs formed by in situ self-polymerization of urea inhibits interactions between layers and increases their affinity for water, which is the key to increasing their sensitivity with water. This strategy offers a new path for developing commercial stimulus responsive RTP materials.

Low-Temperature Synthesis of Mesoporous Half-Metallic High-Entropy Spinel Oxide Nanofibers for Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction

High-entropy oxides (HEOs) exhibit great prospects owing to their varied composition, chemical adaptability, adjustable light-absorption ability, and strong stability. In this study, we report a strategy to synthesize a series of porous high-entropy spinel oxide (HESO) nanofibers (NFs) at a low temperature of 400 °C by a sol-gel electrospinning technique. The key lies in selecting six acetylacetonate salt precursors with similar coordination abilities, maintaining a high-entropy disordered state during the transformation from stable sols to gel NFs. The as-synthesized HESO NFs of (NiCuMnCoZnFe)3O4 show a high specific surface area of 66.48 m2/g, a diverse elemental composition, a dual bandgap, half-metallicity property, and abundant defects. The diverse elements provide various synergistic catalytic sites, and oxygen vacancies act as active sites for electron-hole separation, while the half-metallicity and dual-bandgap structure offer excellent light absorption ability, thus expanding its applicability to a wide range of photocatalytic processes. As a result, the HESO NFs can efficiently convert CO2 into CH4 and CO with high yields of 8.03 and 15.89 μmol g-1 h-1, respectively, without using photosensitizers or sacrificial agents.

Microbiome-friendly PS/PVP electrospun fibrous membrane with antibiofilm properties for dental engineering

Dental caries is one of the most prevalent and biofilm-associated oral diseases in humans. Streptococcus mutans, with a high ability to form biofilms by adhering to hard surfaces, has been established as an important etiological agent for dental caries. Therefore, it is crucial to find a way to prevent the formation of cariogenic biofilm. Here, we report an electrospun fibrous membrane that could inhibit the adhesion and biofilm formation of S. mutans. Also, the polystyrene (PS)/polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) electrospun fibrous membrane altered the 3D biofilm architecture and decreased water-insoluble extracellular polysaccharide production. Notably, the anti-adhesion mechanism which laid in Coulomb repulsion between the negatively charged PS/PVP electrospun fibrous membrane and S. mutans was detected by zeta potential. Furthermore, metagenomics sequencing analysis and CCK-8 assay indicated that PS/PVP electrospun fibrous membrane was microbiome-friendly and displayed no influence on the cell viability of human gingival epithelial cells and human oral keratinocytes. Moreover, an in vitro simulation experiment demonstrated that PS/PVP electrospun fibrous membrane could decrease colony-forming unit counts of S. mutans effectively, and PS/PVP electrospun fibrous membrane carrying calcium fluoride displayed better anti-adhesion ability than that of PS/PVP electrospun fibrous membrane alone. Collectively, this research showed that the PS/PVP electrospun fibrous membrane has potential applications in controlling and preventing dental caries.

Self-Interface in Rh Nanosheets-Supported Tetrahedral Rh Nanocrystals for Promoting Electrocatalytic Oxidation of Ethanol

Direct ethanol fuel cells hold great promise as a power source. However, their commercialization is limited by anode catalysts with insufficient selectivity toward a complete oxidation of ethanol for a high energy density, as well as sluggish catalytic kinetics and low stability. To optimize the catalytic performance, rationally tuning surface structure or interface structure is highly desired. Herein, a facile route is reported to the synthesis of Rh nanosheets-supported tetrahedral Rh nanocrystals (Rh THs/NSs), which possess self-supporting homogeneous interface between Rh tetrahedrons and Rh nanosheets. Due to full leverage of the structural advantages within the given structure and construction of interfaces, the Rh THs/NSs can serve as highly active electro-catalysts with excellent mass activity and selectivity toward ethanol electro-oxidation. The in situ Fourier transform infrared reflection spectroscopy showed the Rh THs/NSs exhibit the highest C1 pathway selectivity of 23.2%, far exceeding that of Rh nanotetrahedra and Rh nanosheets. Density function theory calculations further demonstrated that self-interface between Rh nanosheets and tetrahedra is beneficial for C-C bond cleavage of ethanol. Meanwhile, the self-supporting of 2D nanosheets greatly enhance the stability of tetrahedra, which improves the catalytic stability.

Intelligent responsive copper-diethyldithiocarbamate-based multifunctional nanomedicine for photothermal-augmented synergistic cancer therapy

The design of multifunctional nanomedicine through the combination of multimodal treatments to achieve the optimal antitumor effect is essential for cancer therapy. Herein, we design and develop a multifunctional theranostic nanoplatform using an iron ion-doxorubicin (DOX) nanoscale coordination polymer (Fe/DOX NCP) as a shell coating on the surface of polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) stabilized copper-diethyldithiocarbamate nanoparticles (Cu(DDC)2 NPs) for combined tumor chemo-/photothermal/chemodynamic therapy. The obtained Cu(DDC)2@Fe/DOX NPs display pH/laser dual-responsive degradation behavior and also exhibit favorable photothermal performance. Under 808 nm laser irradiation, Cu(DDC)2@Fe/DOX NPs can convert light into heat, which not only kills tumor cells via hyperthermia in photothermal therapy (PTT), but also accelerates the degradation of Fe/DOX NCPs to release Fe3+ and DOX. The liberated Fe3+ can be used to catalyze hydrogen peroxide via the Fenton reaction to produce highly toxic hydroxyl radicals (˙OH) in chemodynamic therapy (CDT). The released DOX and the exposed Cu(DDC)2 can cause significant cell death in combined chemotherapy via a superimposed effect. In vitro and in vivo results prove that Cu(DDC)2@Fe/DOX NPs with laser irradiation present remarkable anticancer performances in hyperthermia-enhanced chemo-/CDT. Therefore, this study provides a new strategy for highly efficient synergistic cancer therapy.

The role of pH-induced tautomerism of polyvinylpyrrolidone on the size, stability, and antioxidant and antibacterial activities of silver nanoparticles synthesized using microwave radiation

Tautomerism alters the structure and properties of materials, which can be exploited to control their chemical and biological activities. The role of pH-induced tautomerism of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) was determined by measuring the size, stability, and antioxidant and antibacterial properties of microwave synthesized-silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). TEM and XRD analyses confirmed the formation of face-centered cubic silver nanoparticles. PVP stabilized the AgNPs by interaction with the carbonyl or hydroxyl groups depending on the tautomerization under different pH conditions. At pH 4, PVP was stable in the keto tautomer, stabilizing Ag through electron donation of oxygen atoms in the carbonyl group, producing smaller AgNPs with a higher zeta potential. At pH 7 and 9, the enol tautomer PVP stabilized the AgNPs via oxygen atoms in the hydroxyl group, forming large nanoparticles. The keto form of PVP improved the stability and antioxidant and antibacterial properties of AgNPs compared with the enol form. This study also excluded the antioxidant contribution of PVP via hydrogen donation to free radicals. A facile method for controlling the size of AgNPs by adapting the pH-induced tautomerism of PVP that affects their stability and antioxidant and antibacterial activities is thus reported.

Recent Trends in Curcumin-Containing Inorganic-Based Nanoparticles Intended for In Vivo Cancer Therapy

Curcumin is a natural compound that has been widely investigated thanks to its various biological properties, including antiproliferative. This molecule acts on different cancers such as lung, breast, pancreatic, colorectal, etc. However, the bioactive actions of curcumin have limitations when its physicochemical properties compromise its pharmacological potential. As a therapeutic strategy against cancer, curcumin has been associated with inorganic nanoparticles. These nanocarriers are capable of delivering curcumin and offering physicochemical properties that synergistically enhance anticancer properties. This review highlights the different types of curcumin-based inorganic nanoparticles and discusses their physicochemical properties and in vivo anticancer activity in different models of cancer.

Rh@Au Core-Shell Nanocrystals with the Core in Tensile Strain and the Shell in Compressive Strain

Bimetallic nanocrystals provide a versatile platform for utilizing the desired characteristics of two different elements within one particle. Core-shell nanocrystals, in particular, have found widespread use in catalysis by providing an ability to leverage the strains arising from the lattice mismatch between the core and the shell. However, large (>5%) lattice mismatch tends to result in nonepitaxial growth and lattice defects in an effort to release the strain. Herein, we report the epitaxial growth of Au on Rh cubic seeds under mild reaction conditions to generate Rh@Au truncated octahedra featuring a lattice mismatch of 7.2%. Key to the success was the use of small (4.5 nm) Rh cubes as seeds, which could homogeneously distribute the tensile strain arising from the epitaxial growth of a conformal, compressively strained Au shell. Further, delicate tuning of kinetic parameters through the introduction of NaOH and KBr into the synthesis allowed for a unique nucleation pattern that led to centrally located cores and a narrow size distribution for the product. A thorough investigation of the various possible highly strained morphologies was conducted to gain a full understanding of the system.

Advancing Drug Delivery Paradigms: Polyvinyl Pyrolidone (PVP)-Based Amorphous Solid Dispersion for Enhanced Physicochemical Properties and Therapeutic Efficacy

BACKGROUND

The current challenge in drug development lies in addressing the physicochemical issues that lead to low drug effectiveness. Solubility, a crucial physicochemical parameter, greatly influences various biopharmaceutical aspects of a drug, including dissolution rate, absorption, and bioavailability. Amorphous solid dispersion (ASD) has emerged as a widely explored approach to enhance drug solubility.

OBJECTIVE

The objective of this review is to discuss and summarize the development of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)-based amorphous solid dispersion in improving the physicochemical properties of drugs, with a focus on the use of PVP as a novel approach.

METHODOLOGY

This review was conducted by examining relevant journals obtained from databases such as Scopus, PubMed, and Google Scholar, since 2018. The inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied to select suitable articles.

RESULTS

This study demonstrated the versatility and efficacy of PVP in enhancing the solubility and bioavailability of poorly soluble drugs. Diverse preparation methods, including solvent evaporation, melt quenching, electrospinning, coprecipitation, and ball milling are discussed for the production of ASDs with tailored characteristics.

CONCLUSION

PVP-based ASDs could offer significant advantages in the formulation strategies, stability, and performance of poorly soluble drugs to enhance their overall bioavailability. The diverse methodologies and findings presented in this review will pave the way for further advancements in the development of effective and tailored amorphous solid dispersions.

Performance of machine learning algorithms in spectroscopic ellipsometry data analysis of ZnTiO3 nanocomposite

In this research, the optical properties of the PVP: ZnTiO3 nanocomposite are studied using the spectroscopic ellipsometry technique. The preparation procedure of the ZnTiO3 nanocomposite is explained in detail. The absorbance/transmittance, surface morphology, structural information, chemical identification, and surface topography of the ZnTiO3 nanocomposite is studied using UV-Vis spectroscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infra-red, and atomic force microscopy, respectively. The ellipsometry method is used to obtain the spectra of the real and imaginary parts of the dielectric function and refractive index in the photon energy range of 0.59-4.59 eV. Moreover, using two machine learning algorithms, namely artificial neural network and support vector regression methods, the ellipsometric parameters ψ and Δ are analyzed and compared with non-linear regression. The error and accuracy of each three methods, as well as the time required for their execution, are calculated to compare their suitability in the ellipsometric data analysis. Also, the absorption coefficient was used to determine the band gap energy of the ZnTiO3 nanocomposite, which is found to be 3.83 eV. The second-energy derivative of the dielectric function is utilized to identify six critical point energies of the prepared sample. Finally, the spectral-dependent optical loss function and optical conductivity of the ZnTiO3 nanocomposite are investigated.

Morphologies and magnetic properties of α-Fe2O3 nanoparticles calcined at different temperatures

Different morphologies and sizes of α-Fe2O3 were prepared by a coprecipitation method using polyvinylpyrrolidone as a dispersant. In the preparation process, homogeneous and dispersed nanoscale FeOOH particles were first obtained by the coprecipitation method, and then the FeOOH particles were calcined at high temperature to form α-Fe2O3. The growth and aggregation of the α-Fe2O3 particles at different calcination temperatures resulted in α-Fe2O3 powders with diversiform morphologies (nanoscale microsphere, pinecone ellipsoidal, polyhedral, and quasi-spherical structures). By analyzing the SEM images, it was inferred that the polyhedral structure of α-Fe2O3 particles was formed by the accumulation of rhomboid sheet structures and high-temperature growth. In terms of the magnetic properties, the samples belonged to the class of canted antiferromagnetic materials, and the morphology, particle size, and crystallite size of the α-Fe2O3 particles were important factors affecting the coercivity. Among these, when the calcination temperature was increased from 700 °C to 800 °C, the growth rate of the particle size was significantly faster than that of the crystallite size, and the coercivity increased substantially from 1411 Oe to 2688 Oe.
