Robust Imidazole-Linked Covalent Organic Framework Enabling Crystallization Regulation and Bulk Defect Passivation for Highly Efficient and Stable Perovskite Solar Cells

The low crystallinity of the perovskite layers and many defects at grain boundaries within the bulk phase and at interfaces are considered huge barriers to the attainment of high performance and stability in perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Herein, a robust photoelectric imidazole-linked porphyrin-based covalent organic framework (PyPor-COF) is introduced to precisely control the perovskite crystallization process and effectively passivate defects at grain boundaries through a sequential deposition method. The 1D porous channels, abundant active sites, and high crystallization orientation of PyPor-COF offer advantages for regulating the crystallization of PbI2 and eliminating defects. Moreover, the intrinsic electronic characteristics of PyPor-COF endow a more closely matched energy level arrangement within the perovskite layer, which promotes charge transport and thereby suppresses the recombination of photogenerated carriers. The champion PSCs containing PyPor-COF achieved power conversion efficiencies of 24.10% (0.09 cm2) and 20.81% (1.0 cm2), respectively. The unpackaged optimized device is able to maintain its initial efficiency of 80.39% even after being exposed to air for 2000 h. The device also exhibits excellent heating stability and light stability. This work gives a new impetus to the development of highly efficient and stable PSCs via employing COFs.

Cationic covalent organic framework nanosheets as the coating layer of commercial separator for high-efficiency lithium-sulfur batteries

Ion-selective separators, are crucial and in high demand for maximizing the performance of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries, which can conduct lithium ions while efficiently blocking polysulfides. However, commercial separators cannot effectively block the shuttle of polysulfides after multiple cycles due to their large porosity and easy dissolution, resulting in a reduced battery life. Herein, a covalent organic framework nanosheets (CON) ion-coated separator is prepared on the commercial separator. Due to the smaller pore size of CON-TFSI compared to polysulfides, the CON-TFSI modified separator can effectively block the polysulfide from migrating across the separator. By incorporating this innovative functional layer, Li-S batteries demonstrate outstanding performance. In a Li-S battery featuring a sulfur loading of 0.6 mg/cm2, it attains an initial discharge specific capacity of up to 891.9 mA h g-1, and exhibits the capacity retention of 54.6 % after 500 cycles at a current density of 0.2 C. This work offers a fresh perspective on the advancement of high-performance membranes for Li-S batteries.

In-Depth Investigation of Role of -BCO2 in the Degradation of Sulfamethazine by Metal-Free Biochar/Persulfate: The Mechanism of Occurrence of Nonradical Process

The remediation of organic wastewater through advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) based on metal-free biochar/persulfate systems has been extensively researched. In this work, boron-doped alkali lignin biochar (BKC1:3) was utilized to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the removal of sulfamethazine (SMZ). The porous structure and substantial specific surface area of BKC1:3 facilitated the adsorption and thus degradation of SMZ. The XPS characterization and density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrated that -BCO2 was the main active site of BKC1:3, which dominated the occurrence of nonradical pathways. Neither quenching experiments nor EPR characterization revealed the generation of free radical signals. Compared with KC, BKC1:3 possessed more electron-rich regions. The narrow energy gap (ΔEgap = 1.87 eV) of BKC (-BCO2) promoted the electron transfer to the substable complex (BKC@PMS*) on SMZ, driving the electron transfer mechanism. In addition, the adsorption energy of BKC(-BCO2)@PMS was lower (-0.75 eV → -5.12 eV), implying a more spontaneous adsorption process. The O-O (PMS) bond length in BKC(-BCO2)@PMS increased significantly (1.412 Å → 1.481 Å), which led to the easier decomposition of PMS during adsorption and facilitated the generation of 1O2. More importantly, a combination of Gaussian and LC-MS techniques was hypothesized regarding the attack sites and degradation intermediates of the active species in this system. The synergistic T.E.S.T software and toxicity tests predicted low or even no toxicity of the intermediates. Overall, this study proposed a strategy for the preparation of metal-free biochar, aiming to inspire ideas for the treatment of organic-polluted wastewater through advanced oxidation processes (AOPs).

Template-assisted synthesis of hollow anthraquinone-based covalent organic frameworks for aqueous zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitors

Anthraquinone-based hollow COFs were synthesized via a template-assisted method involving polystyrene nanospheres as the hard template, which enabled doubling the specific capacitance and energy density compared to non-templated COFs. Our approach can be extended to other COFs, offering a promising strategy for enhancing the performance of COF-based electrodes in energy storage applications.

Covalent Organic Frameworks for Photocatalytic Reduction of Carbon Dioxide: A Review

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are crystalline networks with extended backbones cross-linked by covalent bonds. Due to the semiconductive properties and variable metal coordinating sites, along with the rapid development in linkage chemistry, the utilization of COFs in photocatalytic CO2RR has attracted many scientists' interests. In this Review, we summarize the latest research progress on variable COFs for photocatalytic CO2 reduction. In the first part, we present the development of COF linkages that have been used in CO2RR, and we discuss four mechanisms including COFs as intrinsic photocatalysts, COFs with photosensitive motifs as photocatalysts, metalated COF photocatalysts, and COFs with semiconductors as heterojunction photocatalysts. Then, we summarize the principles of structural designs including functional building units and stacking mode exchange. Finally, the outlook and challenges have been provided. This Review is intended to give some guidance on the design and synthesis of diverse COFs with different linkages, various structures, and divergent stacking modes for the efficient photoreduction of CO2.

Efficient Capture and Low Energy Release of NH3 by Azophenol Decorated Photoresponsive Covalent Organic Frameworks

In NH3 capture technologies, the desorption process is usually driven by high temperature and low pressure (such as 150-200 °C under vacuum), which accounts for intensive energy consumption and CO2 emission. Developing light responsive adsorbent is promising in this regard but remains a great challenge. Here, we for the first time designed and synthesized a light responsive azophenol-containing covalent organic framework (COF), COF-HNU38, to address this challenge. We found that at 25 °C and 1.0 bar, the cis -COF exhibited a NH3 uptake capacity of 7.7 mmol g-1 and a NH3/N2 selectivity of 158. In the adsorbed NH3, about 29.0 % could be removed by vis-light irradiated cis-trans isomerization at 25 °C, and the remaining NH3 might be released at 25 °C under vacuum. Almost no decrease in adsorption capacity was observed after eight adsorption-desorption cycles. As such, an efficient NH3 capture and low energy release strategy was established thanks to the multiple hydrogen bond interactions (which are strong in total but weak in individuals) between NH3 and the smart COF, as well as the increased polarity and number of hydrogen bond sites after the trans-cis isomerization.

Ion transport mechanisms in covalent organic frameworks: implications for technology

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have emerged as promising materials for ion conduction due to their highly tunable structures and excellent electrochemical stability. This review paper explores the mechanisms of ion conduction in COFs, focusing on how these materials facilitate ion transport across their ordered structures, which is crucial for applications such as solid electrolytes in batteries and fuel cells. We discuss the design strategies employed to enhance ion conductivity, including pore size optimization, functionalization with ionic groups, and the incorporation of solvent molecules and salts. Additionally, we examine the various applications of ion-conductive COFs, particularly in energy storage and conversion technologies, highlighting recent advancements and future directions in this field. This review paper aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the current state of research on ion-conductive COFs, offering insights into their potential to design highly ion-conductive COFs considering not only fundamental studies but also practical perspectives for advanced electrochemical devices.

Turn-On Solid-State Fluorescent Determination of Zinc Ion by Quinoline-Based Covalent Organic Framework

A new quinoline-based COF (covalent organic framework), obtained by Povarov reaction, containing 2,6-diisopropylphenyl moieties as substituents over the heterocyclic ring is described for detecting Zn2+ in aqueous solution. The introduction of the mentioned bulky phenyl rings into the network favors an increase of the distance between the reticular sheets and their arrangement, obtaining a new material with an alternating AB type stacking. The new material exhibits good selectivity to detect Zn2+ by fluorescence emission in aqueous solutions up to a concentration of 1.2 × 10-4 m of the metal ion. In order to have a deeper insight into the interaction between the COF and the zinc cation, a thorough spectroscopical, microscopical, and theoretical study is also presented and discussed in this communication.

Interconversion and functional composites of metal-organic frameworks and hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), an emerging class of highly ordered crystalline porous materials, possess structural tunability, high specific surface area, well-defined pores, and diverse pore environments and morphologies, making them suitable for various potential applications. Moreover, hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs), constructed from organic molecules with complementary hydrogen-bonding patterns, are rapidly evolving into a novel category of porous materials due to their facile mild preparation conditions, solution processability, easy regeneration capability, and excellent biocompatibility. These distinctive advantages have garnered significant attention across diverse fields. Considering the inherent binding affinity between MOFs and HOFs along with the fact that many MOF linkers can serve as building blocks for constructing HOFs, their combination holds promise in creating functional materials with enhanced performance. This feature paper provides an introduction to the interconversion between MOFs and HOFs followed by highlighting the emerging applications of MOF-HOF composites. Finally, we briefly discuss the current challenges associated with future perspectives on MOF-HOF composites.

Thickness-Driven Synthesis and Applications of Covalent Organic Framework Nanosheets

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are two-dimensional, crystalline porous framework materials with numerous scopes for tunability, such as porosity, functionality, stability and aspect ratio (thickness to length ratio). The manipulation of π-stacking in COFs results in truly 2D materials, namely covalent organic nanosheets (CONs), adds advantages in many applications. In this Minireview, we have discussed both top-down (COFs→CONs) and bottom-up (molecules→CONs) approaches with precise information on thickness and lateral growth. We have showcased the research progress on CONs in a few selected applications, such as batteries, catalysis, sensing and biomedical applications. This Minireview specifically highlights the reports where the authors compare the performance of CONs with COFs by demonstrating the impact of the thickness and lateral growth of the nanosheets. We have also provided the possible scope of exploration of CONs research in terms of inter-dimensional conversion, such as graphene to carbon nanotube and future technologies.

Colorimetric sensing for translational applications: from colorants to mechanisms

Colorimetric sensing offers instant reporting via visible signals. Versus labor-intensive and instrument-dependent detection methods, colorimetric sensors present advantages including short acquisition time, high throughput screening, low cost, portability, and a user-friendly approach. These advantages have driven substantial growth in colorimetric sensors, particularly in point-of-care (POC) diagnostics. Rapid progress in nanotechnology, materials science, microfluidics technology, biomarker discovery, digital technology, and signal pattern analysis has led to a variety of colorimetric reagents and detection mechanisms, which are fundamental to advance colorimetric sensing applications. This review first summarizes the basic components (e.g., color reagents, recognition interactions, and sampling procedures) in the design of a colorimetric sensing system. It then presents the rationale design and typical examples of POC devices, e.g., lateral flow devices, microfluidic paper-based analytical devices, and wearable sensing devices. Two highlighted colorimetric formats are discussed: combinational and activatable systems based on the sensor-array and lock-and-key mechanisms, respectively. Case discussions in colorimetric assays are organized by the analyte identities. Finally, the review presents challenges and perspectives for the design and development of colorimetric detection schemes as well as applications. The goal of this review is to provide a foundational resource for developing colorimetric systems and underscoring the colorants and mechanisms that facilitate the continuing evolution of POC sensors.

Perovskite hydroxide-based laccase mimics with controllable activity for environmental remediation and biosensing

Constructing relatively inexpensive nanomaterials to simulate the catalytic performance of laccase is of great significance in recent years. Although research on improving laccase-like activity by regulating ligands of copper (amino acids or small organic molecules, etc.) have achieved remarkable success. There are few reports on improving laccase-like activity by adjusting the composition of metal Cu. Here, we used perovskite hydroxide AB(OH)6 as a model to evaluate the relationship between Cu based alloys and their laccase-like activity. We found that when the Cu/Mn alloy ratio of the perovskite hydroxide A point is greater than 1, the laccase-like activity of the binary alloy perovskite hydroxide is higher than that of the corresponding single Cu. Based on the measurements of XPS and ICP-MS, we deduced that the improvements of laccase-like activity mainly attribute to the ratio of Cu+/Cu2+and the content of Cu. Moreover, two types of substrates (toxic pollutants and catechol neurotransmitters) were used to successfully demonstrated such nanozymes' excellent environmental protecting function and biosensing property. This work will provide a novel approach for the construction and application of laccase-like nanozymes in the future.

The development of catalysts and auxiliaries for the synthesis of covalent organic frameworks

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have recently seen significant advancements. Large quantities of structurally & functionally oriented COFs with a wide range of applications, such as gas adsorption, catalysis, separation, and drug delivery, have been explored. Recent achievements in this field are primarily focused on advancing synthetic methodologies, with catalysts playing a crucial role in achieving highly crystalline COF materials, particularly those featuring novel linkages and chemistry. A series of reviews have already been published over the last decade, covering the fundamentals, synthesis, and applications of COFs. However, despite the pivotal role that catalysts and auxiliaries play in forming COF materials and adjusting their properties (e.g., crystallinity, porosity, stability, and morphology), limited attention has been devoted to these essential components. In this Critical Review, we mainly focus on the state-of-the-art progress of catalysts and auxiliaries applied to the synthesis of COFs. The catalysts include four categories: acid catalysts, base catalysts, transition-metal catalysts, and other catalysts. The auxiliaries, such as modulators, oxygen, and surfactants, are discussed as well. This is then followed by the description of several specific applications derived from the utilization of catalysts and auxiliaries. Lastly, a perspective on the major challenges and opportunities associated with catalysts and auxiliaries is provided.

Construction of MOF@COF-derived composites for ratiometric fluorescence detection of water with ultralow background

A ratiometric sensor with ultralow background is highly desired due to its low environmental influence and high sensitivity. Herein, inspired by the solubility difference of carboxylate in aqueous and organic solvents, we prepared a core-shell structure porous zirconia-covalent organic framework (COF) composite through thermal hydrolysis of UiO-66-COF precursors in organic alkali solution. The ligand 2-aminoterephthalic acids (H2BDC-NH2) of UiO-66 were transformed into 2-aminoterephthalate salts (ATA salts) that existed in zirconium-oxo clusters building units. The composites emitted only yellow emission (597 nm) from the COF in organic solvent due to the insolubility of ATA salts that induce aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) and the protection of the COF shell. Contrarily, when water was added into mixture, the ATA salts were released into solution and its fluorescence recovered at 446 nm, while the fluorescence of COF was quenched due to the blockage of the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) process by water. Thus, a high-sensitivity ratiometric fluorescence method is obtained with ultralow background signal and fast response (less than 1 min) for sensing water in organic solvent. We believe that the proposed ratiometric fluorescence sensor based on the zirconia-COF composite will provide the guidance for detection with wide applications.

Recent progress for chiral stationary phases based on chiral porous materials in high-performance liquid chromatography and gas chromatography separation

Chirality is a fundamental property of nature. Separation and analysis of racemates are of great importance in the fields of medicine and the production of chiral biopharmaceutical intermediates. Chiral chromatography has the characteristics of a wide separation range, fast separation speed, and high efficiency. The development and preparation of novel chiral stationary phases with good chiral recognition and separation capacity is the core and key of chiral chromatographic separation and analysis. In this work, the representative research progress of novel chiral porous crystal materials including chiral covalent organic frameworks, chiral porous organic cages, chiral metal-organic frameworks, and chiral metal-organic cages used as chiral stationary phases of capillary gas chromatography and high-performance liquid chromatography over the last 4 years is reviewed in detail. The chiral recognition and separation properties of the representative studies in this review are also introduced and discussed.

Encapsulation engineering of porous crystalline frameworks for delayed luminescence and circularly polarized luminescence

Delayed luminescence (DF), including phosphorescence and thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF), and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) exhibit common and broad application prospects in optoelectronic displays, biological imaging, and encryption. Thus, the combination of delayed luminescence and circularly polarized luminescence is attracting increasing attention. The encapsulation of guest emitters in various host matrices to form host-guest systems has been demonstrated to be an appealing strategy to further enhance and/or modulate their delayed luminescence and circularly polarized luminescence. Compared with conventional liquid crystals, polymers, and supramolecular matrices, porous crystalline frameworks (PCFs) including metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent-organic frameworks (COFs), zeolites and hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) can not only overcome shortcomings such as flexibility and disorder but also achieve the ordered encapsulation of guests and long-term stability of chiral structures, providing new promising host platforms for the development of DF and CPL. In this review, we provide a comprehensive and critical summary of the recent progress in host-guest photochemistry via the encapsulation engineering of guest emitters in PCFs, particularly focusing on delayed luminescence and circularly polarized luminescence. Initially, the general principle of phosphorescence, TADF and CPL, the combination of DF and CPL, and energy transfer processes between host and guests are introduced. Subsequently, we comprehensively discuss the critical factors affecting the encapsulation engineering of guest emitters in PCFs, such as pore structures, the confinement effect, charge and energy transfer between the host and guest, conformational dynamics, and aggregation model of guest emitters. Thereafter, we summarize the effective methods for the preparation of host-guest systems, especially single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SC-SC) transformation and epitaxial growth, which are distinct from conventional methods based on amorphous materials. Then, the recent advancements in host-guest systems based on PCFs for delayed luminescence and circularly polarized luminescence are highlighted. Finally, we present our personal insights into the challenges and future opportunities in this promising field.

Tailoring β-ketoenamine covalent organic framework with azo for blue light-driven selective oxidation of amines with oxygen

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) present bright prospects in visible light photocatalysis with abundant active sites and exceptional stability. Tailoring an established COF with photoactive group is a prudent strategy to extend visible light absorption toward broad photocatalysis. Here, a β-ketoenamine COF, TpBD-COF, constructed with 1,3,5-triformylphloroglucinol (Tp) and 4,4'-biphenyldiamine (BD), is tailored with azo to validate this strategy. The insertion of azo into BD affords 4,4'-azodianiline (Azo); TpAzo-COF is successfully constructed with Tp and Azo. Intriguingly, the insertion of azo enhances π-conjugation, thereby facilitating visible light absorption and intramolecular electron transfer. Moreover, TpAzo-COF, with an appropriate electronic structure and impressive specific surface area of 1855 m2 g-1, offers substantial active sites conducive to the reduction of oxygen (O2) to superoxide. Compared with TpBD-COF, TpAzo-COF exhibits superior performance for blue light-driven oxidation of amines with O2. Superoxide controls the selective formation of product imines. This work foreshadows the remarkable capacity of tailoring COFs with photoactive group toward broad visible light photocatalysis.

High-Performance Trimethylamine Sensor Based on an Imine Covalent Organic Framework

As trimethylamine (TMA) is widely used in agriculture and industry, inhalation of TMA can cause very serious negative effects on human health. However, most of the current gas sensors for detecting TMA are commonly performed at high temperatures and cannot meet market needs. Inspired by this, we prepared imine covalent organic frameworks (TB-COF) synthesized from two monomers, 1,3,5-tris(4-aminophenyl)benzene (TAPB) and 1,3,5-benzotricarboxaldehyde (BTCA), using acetic acid as a catalyst at room temperature. Based on this, three sensors were prepared for gas sensitivity testing, namely, TA, BT, and TB-COF sensors. The three sensors were tested for 15 different gases at room temperature. From the whole gas sensitivity data, the TB-COF sensor made by compositing TA and BT has a higher sensitivity (6845.9%) to TMA at 500 ppm, which is 6.1 and 5.4 times higher than the response of TA and BT sensors, respectively. The TB-COF sensor adsorbs and desorbs TMA in a controlled 23 s cycle with a low detection limit of 28.6 ppb. This result indicates that TB-COF prepared at room temperature can be used as a gas-sensitive sensing material for real-time monitoring of TMA. The gas sensing results demonstrate the great potential of COFs for sensor development and application and provide ideas for further development of COFs-based gas sensors.

Molecular recognition with resolution below 0.2 angstroms through thermoregulatory oscillations in covalent organic frameworks

Crystalline materials with uniform molecular-sized pores are desirable for a broad range of applications, such as sensors, catalysis, and separations. However, it is challenging to tune the pore size of a single material continuously and to reversibly distinguish small molecules (below 4 angstroms). We synthesized a series of ionic covalent organic frameworks using a tetraphenoxyborate linkage that maintains meticulous synergy between structural rigidity and local flexibility to achieve continuous and reversible (100 thermal cycles) tunability of "dynamic pores" between 2.9 and 4.0 angstroms, with resolution below 0.2 angstroms. This results from temperature-regulated, gradual amplitude change of high-frequency linker oscillations. These thermoelastic apertures selectively block larger molecules over marginally smaller ones, demonstrating size-based molecular recognition and the potential for separating challenging gas mixtures such as oxygen/nitrogen and nitrogen/methane.

Rapid synthesis of aminal-linked covalent organic frameworks for CO2/CH4 separation

As an emerging category of crystalline porous materials, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are primarily synthesized via solvothermal methods. However, achieving rapid synthesis of COFs through this approach poses a significant challenge. To address the issue of slow synthesis, we studied the crystallization process of aminal-linked COFs via the condensation of a cost-effective aldehyde and secondary amine, and successfully expedited the synthesis of COFs within a one-hour duration. Furthermore, gram-scale aminal-linked COFs with abundant ultra-microporous channels demonstrated promising potential for CO2/CH4 separation. This study enables the rapid synthesis of aminal-linked COFs from cheap raw materials, which lays a foundation for their practical applications.

Photocatalytic systems: reactions, mechanism, and applications

The photocatalytic field revolves around the utilization of photon energy to initiate various chemical reactions using non-adsorbing substrates, through processes such as single electron transfer, energy transfer, or atom transfer. The efficiency of this field depends on the capacity of a light-absorbing metal complex, organic molecule, or substance (commonly referred to as photocatalysts or PCs) to execute these processes. Photoredox techniques utilize photocatalysts, which possess the essential characteristic of functioning as both an oxidizing and a reducing agent upon activation. In addition, it is commonly observed that photocatalysts exhibit optimal performance when irradiated with low-energy light sources, while still retaining their catalytic activity under ambient temperatures. The implementation of photoredox catalysis has resuscitated an array of synthesis realms, including but not limited to radical chemistry and photochemistry, ultimately affording prospects for the development of the reactions. Also, photoredox catalysis is utilized to resolve numerous challenges encountered in medicinal chemistry, as well as natural product synthesis. Moreover, its applications extend across diverse domains encompassing organic chemistry and catalysis. The significance of photoredox catalysts is rooted in their utilization across various fields, including biomedicine, environmental pollution management, and water purification. Of course, recently, research has evaluated photocatalysts in terms of cost, recyclability, and pollution of some photocatalysts and dyes from an environmental point of view. According to these new studies, there is a need for critical studies and reviews on photocatalysts and photocatalytic processes to provide a solution to reduce these limitations. As a future perspective for research on photocatalysts, it is necessary to put the goals of researchers on studies to overcome the limitations of the application and efficiency of photocatalysts to promote their use on a large scale for the development of industrial activities. Given the significant implications of the subject matter, this review seeks to delve into the fundamental tenets of the photocatalyst domain and its associated practical use cases. This review endeavors to demonstrate the prospective of a powerful tool known as photochemical catalysis and elucidate its underlying tenets. Additionally, another goal of this review is to expound upon the various applications of photocatalysts.

Regulating Water Adsorption Sites of Keto-Enamine COF by Base Exfoliation and Deprotonation for Enhanced Humidity Response

Covalent organic framework (COF) has received much attention owing to its unique framework structure formed by diverse organic units. However, challenges, including low conductivity, structure instability, and limited control of adsorption and desorption processes, stimulate the modification of COF in electronic sensors. Herein, inspired by the alterable structure of COF in different solvents, a facile base exfoliation and deprotonation method is proposed to regulate the water adsorption sites and improve the intrinsic conductivity of TpPa-1 COF. TpPa-1 COF powders are exfoliated to nanosheets to increase water adsorption, while the deprotonation is utilized to adjust the affinity of water molecules on TpPa-1 COF framework, contributing to water accumulation in the 1D pores. The as-fabricated TpPa-1 COF sensor exhibits a decreased recovery time from 419 to 49 s, forming a linear relation between relative humidity (RH) value and humidity response. The excellent chemical stability of the covalent bond of TpPa-1 COF contributes to the excellent stable device performance in 30 days, promoting further integration and data analysis in respiration monitoring.

Photoelectric Multi-Signal Output Sensor Based on Two-Dimensional Covalent Organic Polymer Film Modified by Novel Aggregation-Induced Emission Probes

Optical sensors, especially fluorescence sensors, have been widely used because of their advantages in sensing, such as the high sensitivity, good selectivity, no radiation source, and easy operation. Here, we report an example of fluorescence sensing based on two-dimensional (2D) covalent organic polymers and highlight that the material can achieve a fast response and multi-signal output. This 2DPTPAK+TAPB-based sensor can quickly detect aromatic hydrocarbons and Fe3+ by the fluorescence signal or electrical resistance signal.

Metalated covalent organic frameworks as efficient catalysts for multicomponent tandem reactions

Multicomponent tandem reactions have become indispensable synthetic methods due to their economic advantages and efficient usage in natural products and drug synthesis. The emergence of metalated covalent organic frameworks (MCOFs) has opened up new opportunities for the advancement of multicomponent tandem reactions. In contrast to commonly used homogeneous transition metal catalysts, MCOFs possess regular porosity, high crystallinity, and rich metal chelation sites that facilitate the uniform distribution and anchoring of metals within their cavities. Thus, they show extremely high activity and have recently been widely employed as catalysts for multicomponent tandem reactions. It is timely to conduct a review of MCOFs in multicomponent tandem reactions, in order to offer guidance and assistance for the synthesis of MCOF catalysts and their application in multicomponent tandem reactions. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the design and synthesis of MCOFs, their application and progress in multicomponent tandem reactions, and the primary challenges encountered during their current development with the aim of contributing to the promotion of the field.

Fabrication of Large-Area Multi-Stimulus Responsive Thin Films via Interfacially Confined Irreversible Katritzky Reaction

Fabrication of large-area thin films through irreversible reactions remains a formidable task. This study reports a breakthrough strategy for in situ synthesis of large-area, free-standing, robust and multi-stimulus responsive thin films through a catalyst-free and irreversible Katritzky reaction at a liquid-liquid interface. The as resulted films are featured with adjustable thickness of 1-3 μm and an area up to 50 cm2. The thin films exhibit fast photo-mechanical motions (a response time of ca 0.1 s), vapor-mechanical motions, as well as photo-chromic and solvato-chromic behaviors. It was revealed that the reason behind the observable motions is proton transfer from the imine groups to the carbonyl structures within the film induced by photo- and/or dimethyl sulfoxide-stimulus. In addition, the films can harvest anionic radicals and the radicals as captured can be efficiently degraded under UV light illumination. This study provides a new strategy for fabricating smart thin films via interfacially confined irreversible Katritzky reaction.

A 2D Acridine-Based Covalent Organic Framework for Selective Detection and Efficient Extraction of Gold from Complex Aqueous-Based Matrices

Developing candidate materials which possess the ability of both selective detection and efficient capture of precious metal gold is highly desirable for environment and economy. However, most of reported materials only focus on single function, which seriously restricts their practical application as probes or adsorbents. Herein, a two dimensional (2D) acridine-based covalent organic framework (TpDa-COF) is prepared via the linkage of imine bonds for gold detection and adsorption. The synthesized COF can achieve both fluorescence and colorimetric dual sensing for Au3+ in a low concentration range (0.1-1.5 ppm) with the limit of detection (LOD) of 0.036 ppm. Impressively, the selectivity of TpDa-COF for the detection of Au3+ is admirable (Fe3+, Fe2+ and Cu2+ for negligible influence on its fluorescence). In addition, TpDa-COF exhibits ultrahigh adsorption capacity of 982.5 mg ⋅ g-1 for gold at pH=4, which is attributed the synergistic effect of both selective coordination and reductive process of Au(III) to Au(0). Meanwhile, both positive entropy change (ΔS=76.07 J ⋅ mol-1 ⋅ K-1) and high distribution coefficient (Kd=12484.8 mL ⋅ g-1) confirm the good affinity between TpDa-COF framework and gold. This work gives us a new insight to prepare COF with pyridine nitrogen sites for gold detection and adsorption.

Covalent Organic Framework/Graphene Hybrids: Synthesis, Properties, and Applications

To address current energy crises and environmental concerns, it is imperative to develop and design versatile porous materials ideal for water purification and energy storage. The advent of covalent organic frameworks (COFs), a revolutionary terrain of porous materials, is underscored by their superlative features such as divinable structure, adjustable aperture, and high specific surface area. However, issues like inferior electric conductivity, inaccessible active sites impede mass transfer and poor processability of bulky COFs restrict their wider application. As a herculean stride forward, COF/graphene hybrids amalgamate the strengths of their constituent components and have in consequence, enticed significant scientific intrigue. Herein, the current progress on the structure and properties of graphene-based materials and COFs are systematically outlined. Then, synthetic strategies for preparing COF/graphene hybrids, including one-pot synthesis, ex situ synthesis, and in situ growth, are comprehensively reviewed. Afterward, the pivotal attributes of COF/graphene hybrids are dissected in conjunction with their multifaceted applications spanning adsorption, separation, catalysis, sensing, and energy storage. Finally, this review is concluded by elucidating prevailing challenges and gesturing toward prospective strides within the realm of COF/graphene hybrids research.

Enhanced Removal of Ultratrace Levels of Gold from Wastewater Using Sulfur-Rich Covalent Organic Frameworks

In view of the increasing global demand and consumption of gold, there is a growing need and effort to extract gold from alternative sources besides conventional mining, e.g., from water. This drive is mainly due to the potential benefits for the economy and the environment as these sources contain large quantities of the precious metal that can be utilized. Wastewater is one of these valuable sources in which the gold concentration can be in the ppb range. However, the effective selective recovery and recycling of ultratrace amounts of this metal remain a challenge. In this article, we describe the development of a covalent imine-based organic framework with pores containing thioanisole functional groups (TTASDFPs) formed by the condensation of a triazine-based triamine and an aromatic dialdehyde. The sulfur-functionalized pores served as effective chelating agents to bind Au3+ ions, as evidenced by the uptake of more than 99% of the 9 ppm Au3+ solution within 2 min. This is relatively fast kinetics compared with other adsorbents reported for gold adsorption. TTASDFP also showed a high removal capacity of 245 mg·g-1 and a clear selectivity toward gold ions. More importantly, the material can capture gold at concentrations as low as 1 ppb.

Meta-Structured Covalent Organic Framework Nanocoatings with Active and Angle-Independent Structural Coloration

High-performance multifunctional nanocoatings not only protect and enhance substrate materials but also offer additional functionalities. This demands a sophisticated coordination of the coating's inherent properties and microstructural features. Here, a multifunctional active nanocoating via meta-structural engineering of covalent organic framework (COF) deposition materials is presented. This COF nanocoating, characterized by well-defined micropores (1-2 nm), meta-structured textures (30-300 nm), tailored thickness (100-300 nm), and good uniformness, showcases a unique combination of angle-independent structural coloration and ultrafast responsiveness to gaseous stimuli. Remarkably, it demonstrates good compatibility with a wide range of inert substrate materials, from rigid ones like glass and metal to flexible elastomers and nanomaterial films of various shapes and sizes. This versatility enables the facile development of devices that can optically report information about their environments. Examples include chemically active coatings with ultrafast (≈10 ms) color-changing behaviors and programmable actuation behaviors upon exposure to gaseous stimuli, and mechanically active coatings that can detect substrate strain up to 50% yet maintain structural robustness and consistent coloration hue. It is believed that meta-structural engineering of COF nanocoatings on inert substrates can enable them to respond to environmental stimuli, potentially indicating a new trend in developing multifunctional materials and smart devices.

Porphyrin-based covalent organic frameworks from design, synthesis to biological applications

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) constitute a class of highly functional porous materials composed of lightweight elements interconnected by covalent bonds, characterized by structural order, high crystallinity, and large specific surface area. The integration of naturally occurring porphyrin molecules, renowned for their inherent rigidity and conjugate planarity, as building blocks in COFs has garnered significant attention. This strategic incorporation addresses the limitations associated with free-standing porphyrins, resulting in the creation of well-organized porous crystal structures with molecular-level directional arrangements. The unique optical, electrical, and biochemical properties inherent to porphyrin molecules endow these COFs with diversified applications, particularly in the realm of biology. This review comprehensively explores the synthesis and modulation strategies employed in the development of porphyrin-based COFs and delves into their multifaceted applications in biological contexts. A chronological depiction of the evolution from design to application is presented, accompanied by an analysis of the existing challenges. Furthermore, this review offers directional guidance for the structural design of porphyrin-based COFs and underscores their promising prospects in the field of biology.

Tuning vibration-induced emission through macrocyclization and catenation

In order to investigate the effect of macrocyclization and catenation on the regulation of vibration-induced emission (VIE), the typical VIE luminogen 9,14-diphenyl-9,14-dihydrodibenzo[a, c]phenazine (DPAC) was introduced into the skeleton of a macrocycle and corresponding [2]catenane to evaluate their dynamic relaxation processes. As investigated in detail by femtosecond transient absorption (TA) spectra, the resultant VIE systems revealed precisely tunable emissions upon changing the solvent viscosity, highlighting the key effect of the formation of [2]catenane. Notably, the introduction of an additional pillar[5]arene macrocycle featuring unique planar chirality endows the resultant chiral VIE-active [2]catenane with attractive circularly polarized luminescence in different states. This work not only develops a new strategy for the design of new luminescent systems with tunable vibration induced emission, but also provides a promising platform for the construction of smart chiral luminescent materials for practical applications.

Powders to Thin Films: Advances in Conjugated Microporous Polymer Chemical Sensors

Chemical sensing of harmful species released either from natural or anthropogenic activities is critical to ensuring human safety and health. Over the last decade, conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) have been proven to be potential sensor materials with the possibility of realizing sensing devices for practical applications. CMPs found to be unique among other porous materials such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs) due to their high chemical/thermal stability, high surface area, microporosity, efficient host-guest interactions with the analyte, efficient exciton migration along the π-conjugated chains, and tailorable structure to target specific analytes. Several CMP-based optical, electrochemical, colorimetric, and ratiometric sensors with excellent selectivity and sensing performance were reported. This review comprehensively discusses the advances in CMP chemical sensors (powders and thin films) in the detection of nitroaromatic explosives, chemical warfare agents, anions, metal ions, biomolecules, iodine, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), with simultaneous delineation of design strategy principles guiding the selectivity and sensitivity of CMP. Preceding this, various photophysical mechanisms responsible for chemical sensing are discussed in detail for convenience. Finally, future challenges to be addressed in the field of CMP chemical sensors are discussed.

Topological Analysis and Structural Determination of 3D Covalent Organic Frameworks

3D covalent organic frameworks (3D COFs) constitute a new type of crystalline materials that consist of a range of porous structures with numerous applications in the fields of adsorption, separation, and catalysis. However, because of the complexity of the three-periodic net structure, it is desirable to develop a thorough structural comprehension, along with a means to precisely determine the actual structure. Indeed, such advancements would considerably contribute to the rational design and application of 3D COFs. In this review, the reported topologies of 3D COFs are introduced and categorized according to the configurations of their building blocks, and a comprehensive overview of diffraction-based structural determination methods is provided. The current challenges and future prospects for these materials will also be discussed.

Unveiling the Potential of Highly Porous Covalent Organic Frameworks for Water-Jet Rewritable Papers

The massive use of paper has resulted in significant negative impacts on the environment. Fortunately, recent progress has been made in the field of rewritable paper, which has great potential in solving the increasing demand for paper while minimizing its environmental footprint. In this work, we report a green and economic strategy to develop ink-free rewritable paper by introducing hydrochromic covalent organic frameworks (COFs) in paper and using water as the sole trigger. When exposed to water or acidic solvents, two kinds of imino COFs change their colors reversibly from red to black. Additionally, a new visible absorption band appears, indicating that it can be transformed into another structure reversibly. This reversibility may be due to the isomerization from the diiminol to an iminol/cisketoenamine and its inability to doubly tautomerize to a diketoenamine. Specifically, we prepared the rewritable paper by loading these two COFs onto filter paper by using the decompression filtration method. When exposed to water, the paper undergoes a color change from red to black, which shows promising potential for applications in water-jet printing. Additionally, there is no significant performance degradation after 20 uses and 10 days between, further highlighting their potential as rewritable papers. To further improve its uniformity, we take the interface polymerization strategy to yield highly crystalline and more compact membranes, which are then transferred to paper to prepare writable papers. Our research has opened up a way for the application of COFs as a water-based printing material.

Size-Dependent Deformation and Competition H-Bond Site-Induced Individual Fluorescence Response of a Single-Crystal Three-Dimensional Covalent Organic Framework

Understanding the individual fluorescence response mechanism of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) at a single-crystal level is of great significance for the rational design of COF-based microsensors but unreachable because all previous COF-based sensors are performed with average fluorescence response behavior of various sized polycrystalline COFs. Herein, we design to explore the fluorescence response of a monodisperse single-crystal COF and further reveal the individual heterogeneity of the response mechanism. Three-dimensional single-crystal COF-301 (SCOF-301) with an intramolecular H-bond-induced excited-state intramolecular proton-transfer effect is selected as a proof-of-concept SCOF. With ethanol, benzene, and ammonia as model analytes, three different deformation and competition H-bond site-induced fluorescence response mechanisms related to crystal size are revealed. Small single particles of SCOF-301 (SSCOF-301) exhibit a more flexible structure, leading to the dominant role of deformation in the fluorescence response of small-sized SSCOF-301. The decreasing flexibility of SSCOF-301 with the increase of crystal size results in involvement of competition of the H-bond site to the fluorescence response besides deformation. Further increase of the crystal size makes the large-sized SSCOF-301 difficult to deform; thus, the competition of the H-bond site dominates the fluorescence response. This work provides a deep understanding of the individual fluorescence response mechanism of COFs to guide the design of a functional COF sensor with suitable size and mechanism for different structural analytes.

Spirobifluorene-Based Porous Organic Salts: Their Porous Network Diversification and Construction of Chiral Helical Luminescent Structures

Porous organic salts (POSs) are organic porous materials assembled via charge-assisted hydrogen bonds between strong acids and bases such as sulfonic acids and amines. To diversify the network topology of POSs and extend its functions, this study focused on using 4,4',4'',4'''-(9,9'-spirobi[fluorene]-2,2',7,7'-tetrayl)tetrabenzenesulfonic acid (spiroBPS), which is a tetrasulfonic acid comprising a square planar skeleton. The POS consisting of spiroBPS and triphenylmethylamine (TPMA) (spiroBPS/TPMA) was constructed from the two-fold interpenetration of an orthogonal network with pts topology, which has not been reported in conventional POSs, owing to the shape of the spirobifluorene backbone. Furthermore, combining tris(4-chlorophenyl)methylamine (TPMA-Cl) and tris(4-bromophenyl)methylamine (TPMA-Br), which are bulkier than TPMA owing to the introduction of halogens at the p-position of the phenyl groups with spiroBPS allows us to construct novel POSs (spiroBPS/TPMA-Cl and spiroBPS/TPMA-Br). These POSs were constructed from a chiral helical network with pth topology, which was induced by the steric hindrance between the halogens and the curved fluorene skeleton. Moreover, spiroBPS/TPMA-Cl with pth topology exhibited circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) in the solid state, which has not been reported in hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs).

A review on carbon-based biowaste and organic polymer materials for sustainable treatment of sulfonamides from pharmaceutical wastewater

Frequent detection of sulfonamides (SAs) pharmaceuticals in wastewater has necessitated the discovery of suitable technology for their sustainable remediation. Adsorption has been widely investigated due to its effectiveness, simplicity, and availability of various adsorbent materials from natural and artificial sources. This review highlighted the potentials of carbon-based adsorbents derived from agricultural wastes such as lignocellulose, biochar, activated carbon, carbon nanotubes graphene materials as well as organic polymers such as chitosan, molecularly imprinted polymers, metal, and covalent frameworks for SAs removal from wastewater. The promising features of these materials including higher porosity, rich carbon-content, robustness, good stability as well as ease of modification have been emphasized. Thus, the materials have demonstrated excellent performance towards the SAs removal, attributed to their porous nature that provided sufficient active sites for the adsorption of SAs molecules. The modification of physico-chemical features of the materials have been discussed as efficient means for enhancing their adsorption and reusable performance. The article also proposed various interactive mechanisms for the SAs adsorption. Lastly, the prospects and challenges have been highlighted to expand the knowledge gap on the application of the materials for the sustainable removal of the SAs.

Metal-Coordinated Covalent Organic Frameworks as Advanced Bifunctional Hosts for Both Sulfur Cathodes and Lithium Anodes in Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

The shuttling of polysulfides on the cathode and the uncontrollable growth of lithium dendrites on the anode have restricted the practical application of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. In this study, a metal-coordinated 3D covalent organic framework (COF) with a homogeneous distribution of nickel-bis(dithiolene) and N-rich triazine centers (namely, NiS4-TAPT) was designed and synthesized, which can serve as bifunctional hosts for both sulfur cathodes and lithium anodes in Li-S batteries. The abundant Ni centers and N-sites in NiS4-TAPT can greatly enhance the adsorption and conversion of the polysulfides. Meanwhile, the presence of Ni-bis(dithiolene) centers enables uniform Li nucleation at the Li anode, thereby suppressing the growth of Li dendrites. This work demonstrated the effectiveness of integrating catalytic and adsorption sites to optimize the chemical interactions between host materials and redox-active intermediates, potentially facilitating the rational design of metal-coordinated COF materials for high-performance secondary batteries.

Constructing Highly Emissive Covalent Organic Frameworks for Fe3+ Ion Detection via Wall Function

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) represent a new type of crystalline porous polymers that possess pre-designed skeletons, uniform nanopores, and ordered π structure. These attributes make them well-suited for the design of light-emitting materials. However, the majority of COFs exhibits poor luminescence due to aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ), resulting from the strong interaction between adjacent layers. To break the limitation, the building units with three methoxy groups on the walls are used to construct TM-OMe-EBTHz-COF, which suppresses the ACQ effects to improve light-emitting activity of COF. The TM-OMe-EBTHz-COF exhibits a notable emission of yellow-green luminescence in the solid state, with a remarkably high absolute quantum yield of 21.1%. The methoxy groups and hydrazine linkage form three coordination sites, contributing to excellent performance in metal ions sensing. The TM-OMe-EBTHz-COF demonstrates high sensitivity and selectivity to Fe3+ ion. Importantly, the low detection limit is below 150 nanomolar, ranking it among the best-performing Fe3+ sensor systems.

Sustainable remediation of pesticide pollutants using covalent organic framework - A review on material properties, synthesis methods and application

Covalent organic frameworks (COF) have emerged as a potential class of materials for a variety of applications in a wide number of sectors including power storage, environmental services, and biological applications due to their ordered and controllable porosity, large surface area, customizable structure, remarkable stability, and diverse electrical characteristics. COF have received a lot of attention in recent years in the field of environmental remediation, It also find its way to eliminate the emerging pollutant from the environment notably pesticide from polluted water. This review more concentrated on the application of COF in pesticide removal by modifying COF structure, COF synthesis and material properties. To increase the adsorption ability and selectivity of the material towards certain pesticides removal, the synthesis of COF involves organic linkers with various functional groups such as amine, carboxylic acid groups etc. The COF have a high degree of stability and endurance make them suitable for intermittent usage in water treatment applications. This review manifests the novel progress where modified COFs employed in a prominent manner to remove pesticides from polluted water. Some examples of COF application in the eradication of pesticides are triformyl phenylene framework functionalized with amine groups has capacity to remove up to 50 mg/l of Organophosphorus - chlorpyrifos. COF modified to improve their photocatalytic capacity to breakdown the pesticide under visible light irradiation. COF tetraphenyl ethylene linked with carboxylic acid group shows efficient photocatalytic degradation of 90% of organochlorine insecticide endosulfan when subjected to visible light. Atrazine and imidacloprid are reduced from 100 ppm to 1 ppm in aqueous solutions by COF based on high adsorption capacity. In addition, the strategies, technique, synthesis and functional group modification design of COF are discussed.

Research Progress on the Application of Covalent Organic Framework Nanozymes in Analytical Chemistry

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are porous crystals that have high designability and great potential in designing, encapsulating, and immobilizing nanozymes. COF nanozymes have also attracted extensive attention in analyte sensing and detection because of their abundant active sites, high enzyme-carrying capacity, and significantly improved stability. In this paper, we classify COF nanozymes into three types and review their characteristics and advantages. Then, the synthesis methods of these COF nanozymes are introduced, and their performances are compared in a list. Finally, the applications of COF nanozymes in environmental analysis, food analysis, medicine analysis, disease diagnosis, and treatment are reviewed. Furthermore, we also discuss the application prospects of COF nanozymes and the challenges they face.

Effect of interlayer slipping on the geometric, thermal and adsorption properties of 2D covalent organic frameworks: a comprehensive review based on computational modelling studies

Two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (2D-COFs) are a class of crystalline porous organic polymers, consisting of 2D-planar sheets stacked together perpendicularly via noncovalent forces. Since their discovery, 2D-COFs have attracted extensive attention for optoelectronic and adsorption applications. Owing to the layer stacking nature of 2D COFs, various new slipped structures that are energetically favourable can be designed. These interlayer slipped structures are actively responsible for tuning (mostly enhancing) the optoelectronic properties, thermal properties, and mechanical strength of 2D COFs. This review summarizes the effect of interlayer slipping on the energetic stability, electronic behaviour and gas adsorption properties of 2D layered COFs, which is explained through computational modelling simulations. Since computational modelling offers a deep insight into electronic behaviour at the atomic scale, which is potentially impossible through experimental techniques, the introduction and role of computational techniques in such studies have also been described.

Flexible Linker-Based Triazine-Functionalized 2D Covalent Organic Frameworks for Supercapacitor and Gas Sorption Applications

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) having a large surface area, porosity, and substantial amounts of heteroatom content are recognized as the ideal class of materials for energy storage and gas sorption applications. In this work, we have synthesized four different porous COF materials by the polycondensation of a heteroatom-rich flexible triazine-based trialdehyde linker, namely 2,4,6-tris(4-formylphenoxy)-1,3,5-triazine (TPT-CHO), with four different triamine linkers. Triamine linkers were chosen based on differences in size, symmetry, planarity, and heteroatom content, leading to the synthesis of four different COF materials named IITR-COF-1, IITR-COF-2, IITR-COF-3, and IITR-COF-4. IITR-COF-1, synthesized within 24 h from the most planar and largest amine monomer, exhibited the largest Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area of 2830 m2 g-1, superior crystallinity, and remarkable reproducibility compared to the other COFs. All of the synthesized COFs were explored for energy and gas storage applications. It is shown that the surface area and redox-active triazene rings in the materials have a profound effect on energy and gas storage enhancement. In a three-electrode setup, IITR-COF-1 achieved an electrochemical stability potential window (ESPW) of 2.0 V, demonstrating a high specific capacitance of 182.6 F g-1 with energy and power densities of 101.5 Wh kg-1 and 298.3 W kg-1, respectively, at a current density of 0.3 A g-1 in 0.5 M K2SO4 (aq) with long-term durability. The symmetric supercapacitor of IITR-COF-1//IITR-COF-1 exhibited a notable specific capacitance of 30.5 F g-1 and an energy density of 17.0 Wh kg-1 at a current density of 0.12 A g-1. At the same time, it demonstrated 111.3% retention of its initial specific capacitance after 10k charge-discharge cycles. Moreover, it exhibited exceptional CO2 capture capacity of 25.90 and 10.10 wt % at 273 and 298 K, respectively, with 2.1 wt % of H2 storage capacity at 77 K and 1 bar.

Recent advances in photoelectrochemical platforms based on porous materials for environmental pollutant detection

Human health and ecology are seriously threatened by harmful environmental contaminants. It is essential to develop efficient and simple methods for their detection. Environmental pollutants can be detected using photoelectrochemical (PEC) detection technologies. The key ingredient in the PEC sensing system is the photoactive material. Due to the unique characteristics, such as a large surface area, enhanced exposure of active sites, and effective mass capture and diffusion, porous materials have been regarded as ideal sensing materials for the construction of PEC sensors. Extensive efforts have been devoted to the development and modification of PEC sensors based on porous materials. However, a review of the relationship between detection performance and the structure of porous materials is still lacking. In this work, we present an overview of PEC sensors based on porous materials. A number of typical porous materials are introduced separately, and their applications in PEC detection of different types of environmental pollutants are also discussed. More importantly, special attention has been paid to how the porous material's structure affects aspects like sensitivity, selectivity, and detection limits of the associated PEC sensor. In addition, future research perspectives in the area of PEC sensors based on porous materials are presented.

Porous materials as effective chemiresistive gas sensors

Chemiresistive gas sensors (CGSs) have revolutionized the field of gas sensing by providing a low-power, low-cost, and highly sensitive means of detecting harmful gases. This technology works by measuring changes in the conductivity of materials when they interact with a testing gas. While semiconducting metal oxides and two-dimensional (2D) materials have been used for CGSs, they suffer from poor selectivity to specific analytes in the presence of interfering gases and require high operating temperatures, resulting in high signal-to-noise ratios. However, nanoporous materials have emerged as a promising alternative for CGSs due to their high specific surface area, unsaturated metal actives, and density of three-dimensional inter-connected conductive and pendant functional groups. Porous materials have demonstrated excellent response and recovery times, remarkable selectivity, and the ability to detect gases at extremely low concentrations. Herein, our central emphasis is on all aspects of CGSs, with a primary focus on the use of porous materials. Further, we discuss the basic sensing mechanisms and parameters, different types of popular sensing materials, and the critical explanations of various mechanisms involved throughout the sensing process. We have provided examples of remarkable performance demonstrated by sensors using these materials. In addition to this, we compare the performance of porous materials with traditional metal-oxide semiconductors (MOSs) and 2D materials. Finally, we discussed future aspects, shortcomings, and scope for improvement in sensing performance, including the use of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent-organic frameworks (COFs), and porous organic polymers (POPs), as well as their hybrid counterparts. Overall, CGSs using porous materials have the potential to address a wide range of applications, including monitoring water quality, detecting harmful chemicals, improving surveillance, preventing natural disasters, and improving healthcare.

Designing State-of-the-Art Gas Sensors: From Fundamentals to Applications

Gas sensors are crucial in environmental monitoring, industrial safety, and medical diagnostics. Due to the rising demand for precise and reliable gas detection, there is a rising demand for cutting-edge gas sensors that possess exceptional sensitivity, selectivity, and stability. Due to their tunable electrical properties, high-density surface-active sites, and significant surface-to-volume ratio, nanomaterials have been extensively investigated in this regard. The traditional gas sensors utilize homogeneous material for sensing where the adsorbed surface oxygen species play a vital role in their sensing activity. However, their performance for selective gas sensing is still unsatisfactory because the employed high temperature leads to the poor stability. The heterostructures nanomaterials can easily tune sensing performance and their different energy band structures, work functions, charge carrier concentration and polarity, and interfacial band alignments can be precisely designed for high-performance selective gas sensing at low temperature. In this review article, we discuss in detail the fundamentals of semiconductor gas sensing along with their mechanisms. Further, we highlight the existed challenges in semiconductor gas sensing. In addition, we review the recent advancements in semiconductor gas sensor design for applications from different perspective. Finally, the conclusion and future perspectives for improvement of the gas sensing performance are discussed.

Sensing potential of C6N8 for ammonia (NH3) and nitrogen triflouride (NF3): A DFT study

The detection of toxic gases (NH3 and NF3) in regulating and monitoring air quality in the atmosphere has drawn a lot of attention. Herein, we explored a novel material (C6N8) for the detection of the important but toxic gases (NH3 and NF3). We investigated the interactions of the NH3 and NF3 with C6N8 through DFT at B3LYP, ωB97XD, and non-DFT M06-2X. Counterpoise interaction energy values (Eint. cp.) of NH3@C6N8 and NF3@C6N8 are -0.45 eV and -3.51 eV (for B3LYP), -0.42 eV and 2.11 eV (for ωB97XD) and -0.44 eV and -3.41eV (for M06-2X), respectively. Complexes having the most stable configurations were then subjected to further analyses including frontier molecular orbitals, H-L gap, and conductivity of complexes. An increase in the H-L gap in complexes (NH3@C6N8 and NF3@C6N8) is observed. The conductivity of NH3@C6N8 and NF3@C6N8 decreases as compared to C6N8. A considerable change in dipole moment was seen in C6N8 before and after complex formation. This is because of the shifting of charge between C6N8 and gases (NH3 and NF3). CHELPG and NBO charge analysis were used to evaluate the amount of charge transfer between C6N8 and gases. These analyses demonstrate that NH3 and NF3 withdraw electron density from C6N8. It was found that NH3 tends to be physically adsorbed on C6N8 while NF3 adsorbs chemically on C6N8. NCI and QTAIM analyses were performed to investigate the kind of interactions between the surface (C6N8) and gases (NH3 and NF3). Furthermore, the recovery time of NH3@C6N8 and NF3@C6N8 shows that C6N8 can be a better choice for sensing NH3 and NF3 gases.

Raising the Asymmetric Catalytic Efficiency of Chiral Covalent Organic Frameworks by Tuning the Pore Environment

Chiral covalent organic frameworks (COFs) hold considerable promise in the realm of heterogeneous asymmetric catalysis. However, fine-tuning the pore environment to enhance both the activity and stereoselectivity of chiral COFs in such applications remains a formidable challenge. In this study, we have successfully designed and synthesized a series of clover-shaped, hydrazone-linked chiral COFs, each with a varying number of accessible chiral pyrrolidine catalytic sites. Remarkably, the catalytic efficiencies of these COFs in the asymmetric aldol reaction between cyclohexanone and 4-nitrobenzaldehyde correlate well with the number of accessible pyrrolidine sites within the frameworks. The COF featuring nearly one pyrrolidine moiety at each nodal point demonstrated excellent reaction yields and enantiomeric excess (ee) values, reaching up to 97 and 83%, respectively. The findings not only underscore the profound impact of a deliberately controlled chiral pore environment on the catalytic efficiencies of COFs but also offer a new perspective for the design and synthesis of advanced chiral COFs for efficient asymmetric catalysis.

Multiwall Carbon Nanotubes/Spherical Glassy Carbon as Environmentally Friendly Adsorption Materials Utilized in Adsorptive Stripping Voltammetry for the Determination of Trace Amounts of Ga(III)

This work presents a proposal for an adsorptive stripping voltammetric (AdSV) method for gallium(III) determination at an eco-friendly multiwall carbon nanotube/spherical glassy carbon (MWCNT/SGC) electrode modified with a lead film. The operational factors influencing the sensitivity of the AdSV procedure were thoroughly investigated, and their most favorable values were chosen (0.1 mol L-1 acetate buffer solution pH = 5.6; 7 × 10-5 mol L-1 Pb(II); 2 × 10-4 mol L-1 cupferron; potential/time of lead film formation: -1.9 V/30 s; potential/time of Ga(III)-cupferron adsorption: -0.75 V/30 s). The newly developed MWCNT/SGCE has proven to be a competitive substrate to the glassy carbon electrode to create a lead film electrode, since it allows the determination of gallium in a wider range of concentrations from 3 × 10-9 to 4 × 10-7 mol L-1 with a lower limit of detection equal to 9.5 × 10-10 mol L-1. The elaborated procedure has been shown to be highly selective and insensitive to the presence of an even 100-fold excess of most of the ions commonly found in environmental waters. The MWCNT/SGC sensor, which can maintain >95% of its original response after 70 days of use, has been successfully applied for the detection of gallium in water samples with the relative standard deviation (RSD) ranging from 4.5% to 6.2% (n = 3) and recoveries in the range from 95.3% to 104.9%.

Recent advances in two-dimensional polymers: synthesis, assembly and energy-related applications

Two-dimensional polymers (2DPs) are a class of 2D crystalline polymer materials with definite structures, which have outstanding physical-chemical and electronic properties. They cleverly link organic building units through strong covalent bonds and can construct functional 2DPs through reasonable design and selection of different monomer units to meet various application requirements. As promising energy materials, 2DPs have developed rapidly in recent years. This review first introduces the basic overview of 2DPs, such as their historical development, inherent 2D characteristics and diversified topological advantages, followed by the summary of the typical 2DP synthesis methods recently (including "top-down" and "bottom-up" methods). The latest research progress in assembly and processing of 2DPs and the energy-related applications in energy storage and conversion are also discussed. Finally, we summarize and prospect the current research status, existing challenges, and future research directions of 2DPs.
