Construction and application of base-stable MOFs: a critical review

Are micro/nanorobots an effective solution to eliminate micro/nanoplastics in water/wastewater treatment plants?

The extensive production and widespread use of plastic products have resulted in the gradual escalation of plastic pollution. Micro/nano/plastic pollution has become a global issue, and addressing how to "green" remove them is a crucial topic that needs to be tackled at this stage. Recently, micro/nanorobots have offered a promising solution for improving water monitoring and remediation as an environmentally friendly remediation strategy. Micro/nanorobots have been proven to efficiently remove micro/nanoplastics from water bodies. Micro/nanoplastics are captured by micro/nanorobots in water through electrostatic adsorption and electrophoretic interactions, and separation is achieved under the action of an external transverse rotating magnetic field. Their small size enables them to navigate easily in complex environments, while magnetic and optical drives help them move along established routes and reach different areas. With the assistance of these innovative robots, diffusion-limited reactions can be overcome, allowing for active contact with target pollutants. However, research on the removal of micro/nanoplastics by micro/nanorobots is still in its early stages. The dependence on chemical fuels and high costs severely limit the development and application of micro/nanorobots. Micro/nanoplastics are frequently captured by micro/nanorobots, but the degradation efficiency of micro/nanoplastics remains very low. Additionally, the secondary pollution caused by micro/nanorobots is also a key factor limiting their implementation. Although micro/nanorobots are a very promising technology for removing micro/nanoplastics, they still need to be explored in their applications. This paper discusses the opportunities and challenges faced by micro/nanorobots in removing micro/nanoplastics. Development and application of self-driven intelligent micro/nanorobots will help expedite the eco-friendly removal of micro/nanoplastics and other emerging pollutants.

Preparation and characterization of quercetin@ZIF-L/GO@AgNPs nanocomposite film for room-temperature strawberry preservation

Fresh strawberries are easily contaminated by microorganisms after picking. Therefore, how to effectively store and keep fresh strawberries has been a hot topic for scientists to study. In this study, we prepared a leaf shaped metal organic framework nanomaterial loaded with quercetin (Quercetin@ZIF-L) at first, which can achieve effective loading of quercetin (96%) within 45 min and has a controlled release effect under acidic conditions. In addition, by cleverly combining satellite graphene oxide @ silver nanoparticles (GO@AgNPs) with slow precipitation performance, Quercetin@ZIF-L/GO@AgNPs nanocomposite film with larger pore size and larger specific surface area was prepared by scraping method. The characterization data of water flux, retention rate, flux recovery rate and water vapor permeability show that the composite film has good physical properties. The experiment of film packaging showed that the fresh life of strawberry could be extended from 3 to 8 days, which significantly improved the storage and freshness cycle of strawberry. At the same time, the metal migration test proved that the residual amount of silver ion in strawberry met the EU standard and zinc ions are beneficial to the health, enriching the types of high-performance fresh-keeping materials and broadening the application.

Constructing Co4(SO4)4 Clusters within Metal-Organic Frameworks for Efficient Oxygen Electrocatalysis

Multinuclear metal clusters are ideal candidates to catalyze small molecule activation reactions involving the transfer of multiple electrons. However, synthesizing active metal clusters is a big challenge. Herein, on constructing an unparalleled Co4(SO4)4 cluster within porphyrin-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and the electrocatalytic features of such Co4(SO4)4 clusters for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is reported. The reaction of CoII sulfate and metal complexes of tetrakis(4-pyridyl)porphyrin under solvothermal conditions afforded Co4-M-MOFs (M═Co, Cu, and Zn). Crystallographic studies revealed that these Co4-M-MOFs have the same framework structure, having the Co4(SO4)4 clusters connected by metalloporphyrin units through Co─Npyridyl bonds. In the Co4(SO4)4 cluster, the four CoII ions are chemically and symmetrically equivalent and are each coordinated with four sulfate O atoms to give a distorted cube-like structure. Electrocatalytic studies showed that these Co4-M-MOFs are all active for electrocatalytic OER and ORR. Importantly, by regulating the activity of the metalloporphyrin units, it is confirmed that the Co4(SO4)4 cluster is active for oxygen electrocatalysis. With the use of Co porphyrins as connecting units, Co4-Co-MOF displays the highest electrocatalytic activity in this series of MOFs by showing a 10 mA cm-2 OER current density at 357 mV overpotential and an ORR half-wave potential at 0.83 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE). Theoretical studies revealed the synergistic effect of two proximal Co atoms in the Co4(SO4)4 cluster in OER by facilitating the formation of O─O bonds. This work is of fundamental significance to present the construction of Co4(SO4)4 clusters in framework structures for oxygen electrocatalysis and to demonstrate the cooperation between two proximal Co atoms in such clusters during the O─O bond formation process.

Tailoring the Electrochemical Responses of MOF-74 Via Dual-Defect Engineering for Superior Energy Storage

Rationally designed defects in a crystal can confer unique properties. This study showcases a novel dual-defects engineering strategy to tailor the electrochemical response of metal-organic framework (MOF) materials used for electrochemical energy storage. Salicylic acid (SA) is identified as an effective modulator to control MOF-74 growth and induce structural defects, and cobalt cation doping is adopted for introducing a second type of defect. The resulting dual-defects engineered bimetallic MOF exhibits a discharging capacity of 218.6 mAh g-1, 4.4 times that of the pristine MOF-74, and significantly improved cycling stability. Moreover, the engineered MOF-74(Ni0.675Co0.325)-8//Zn aqueous battery shows top energy/power density performances for Ni-Zn batteries (266.5 Wh kg-1, 17.22 kW kg-1). Comprehensive investigations reveal that engineered defects modify the local coordination environment and promote the in situ electrochemical reconfiguration during operation to significantly boost the electrochemical activity. This work suggests that rational tailoring of the defects within the MOF crystal is an effective strategy to manipulate the coordination environment of the metal centers and the corresponding electrochemical reconfiguration for electrochemical applications.

Effect of Metal-Organic Frameworks with Different Ligand Structures (ZIF-11 & ZIF-23) on the Optoelectronic Performance of Perovskite Photodetectors

Crystal engineering using passivation to reduce perovskite defects is crucial to improving the quality of perovskite crystals and optoelectronic properties. Because of their unique properties, metal-organic framework materials have been used as an emerging and effective passivator for perovskite materials and optoelectronic devices. This paper focuses on the differences in the optoelectronic properties of zeolite imidazolium ester framework materials (ZIF-11 & ZIF-23) doped with different conjugated ring ligands for perovskite photodetectors. This paper proposes a simple and effective method to dope zeolite imidazolium ester framework nanoparticles (ZIF-11 & ZIF-23) into organic-inorganic perovskite MAPbI3 films. The crystalline quality of the perovskite films was improved after doping with ZIF-11 and ZIF-23. Meanwhile, the performance of the planar photoconductive devices was significantly improved. The photoresponsivity of the photodetector doped with ZIF-23 was 0.185A/W, and the detectivity was 4.22 × 1012 Jones. The photoresponsivity of the photodetector doped with ZIF-23 was 0.164 A/W, and the detectivity was 3.27 × 1012 Jones. The devices maintained long-time operational stability, operating without significant degradation for 480 s under the 1.2 V bias voltage operating condition. In addition, we observed a significant suppression of the ion migration process in ZIF-23 for a voltage-controlled ion migration process. The potential application of perovskite and MOF heterojunction materials for image information acquisition and storage is demonstrated.

Isoreticular Curves: A Theory of Capillary Condensation To Model Water Sorption within Microporous Sorbents

Metal-organic frameworks have gained traction as leading materials for water sorption applications due to precise chemical tunability of their well-ordered pores. These applications include atmospheric water capture, heat pumps, desiccation, desalination, humidity control, and thermal batteries. However, the relationships between the framework pore structure and the measurable water sorption properties, namely critical relative humidity for condensation, maximal capacity, and pore size or temperature for the onset of hysteresis, have not been clearly delineated. Herein, we precisely formulate these relationships by application of the theory of capillary condensation and macroscopic thermodynamic models to a large data set of MOF water isotherms. These relationships include a concept termed isoreticular curves that relates the critical pressure for pore condensation (α), gravimetric capacity (Qmax), and hydrophilicity (the Gibbs free energy for binding water, ΔG) as Qmax = a1(ΔG/ln α)2 + a2(ΔG/ln α), with constants a1 and a2 dependent upon the density and volume occupied by the linker and secondary building unit, and framework topology. Through this analysis, we propose guidelines for the maximization of sorption capacity at a given relative humidity with minimal hysteresis and discuss the theoretical limits for capacity at low relative humidity. This model provides an explanation for the lack of high-capacity frameworks at low relative humidity, as increasing pore size also causes an increase in relative humidity. We propose a loose upper bound of Qmax = -0.25(1/ln α)2 - 1.75(1/ln α) for the limit of maximal capacity at a given relative humidity in the dry regime. These guidelines are consequential for the design of new materials for water sorption applications.

Construction of a series of pH stable Ca-based MOFs, their CO2 adsorption and catalytic activity

In this study, three different solvent systems have been employed to investigate the effect of reaction parameters on the synthesis of four alkaline earth metal-based MOFs namely [Ca(0.5 1,4-phenyl diacetic acid)2(H2O)DMF]∞ (Ca-MOF-1), [Ca(1,4-naphthalene dicarboxylate)DMF]∞ (Ca-MOF-2), [Ca2(0.5 1,2,4,5-benzene tetracarboxylate)2(H2O)3DMF]∞ (Ca-MOF-3) and [Ca2(2,6-naphthalene dicarboxylate)2(H2O)6]∞ (Ca-MOF-4). The crystal structures of these four MOFs have been resolved through single crystal X-ray analysis and the bulk phase purity of these MOFs was assessed using PXRD and FT-IR analysis. To check the stability of these MOFs, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was carried out. To analyze the robustness of these MOFs, the PXRD of the samples was also collected at different pH levels. These MOFs were further explored as Lewis acid catalysts for the alcoholysis of epoxides and the activity of these catalysts depend on the open metal sites present in the MOFs. The catalytic activity follows the order: Ca-MOF-2 > Ca-MOF-4 > Ca-MOF-1 > Ca-MOF-3. The activity was also checked with various epoxide substrates using Ca-MOF-2. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations also support this trend with the help of the thermodynamic feasibility of epoxide binding, considering model MOF structures. The weak interaction between the epoxide oxygen and the metal centre of the most stable MOF structure has also been clarified by computational studies.

Removal of pollutants through photocatalysis, adsorption, and electrochemical sensing by a unique plasmonic structure of palladium and strontium oxide nanoparticles sandwiched between 2D nanolayers

The redesigned engineering building of nanocomposite (NCP) depends on metal oxides of palladium oxide (PdO) nanoparticles (NPs) conjugate with the n-type semiconductor of strontium oxide (SrO) NPs on the electron carrier surface of graphene oxide (GO) and reduce graphene oxide (rGO) nanosheet is the main target of the current work. The low efficiency of PdO (n-type) and SrO (p-type) gave an overview of the increasing generation electron efficiency via building the ohmic area on the GO and rGO surface using the Z-scheme mechanism. The efficiency of the NCP surface for destroying organic pollutants such as mixed dyes of Rhodamine B and methylene blue (RhB/MB), as against insecticides like imidacloprid, and the removal of heavy metals such as chromium ions was studied. The production of clean water against pollutants materials was investigated through adsorption and photocatalytic processes, electrochemical, and spectroscopy methods to detect the activity of NCP. The rate constant of the adsorption pollutants is 0.1776 min-1 (MB), 0.3489 min-1 (RhB), 0.3627 min-1 (imidacloprid), and 0.5729 min-1 (Cr3+). The photocatalytic rate recorded at 0.01218 min-1 (MB), 0.0096 min-1 (RhB), appeared degradation rate at 0.0086 min-1 (imidacloprid), 0.0019 min-1 (Cr6+), and 0.0471 min-1 (Cr3+). The adsorption and photocatalytic efficiency of nanocatalyst (NCP) was calculated at 91% (RhB), 93% (MB), 73% (imidacloprid), 63% (Cr3+), while the photocatalytic efficiency is 63% (RhB), 94% (MB), 86% (imidacloprid), 33% (Cr3+). The recyclability of NCP was tested for five cycles, and the efficiency was discovered at 55% after the fifth cycle. The cytotoxicity of NCP was studied to detect the safety of the fabricated materials. The study validates that the fabricated nanocomposite exhibits great potential as an innovative material for producing clean water.

Building Co16-N3-Based UiO-MOF to Expand Design Parameters for MOF Photosensitization

The construction of secondary building units (SBUs) in versatile metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) represents a promising method for developing multi-functional materials, especially for improving their sensitizing ability. Herein, we developed a dual small molecules auxiliary strategy to construct a high-nuclear transition-metal-based UiO-architecture Co16-MOF-BDC with visible-light-absorbing capacity. Remarkably, the N3 - molecule in hexadecameric cobalt azide SBU offers novel modification sites to precise bonding of strong visible-light-absorbing chromophores via click reaction. The resulting Bodipy@Co16-MOF-BDC exhibits extremely high performance for oxidative coupling benzylamine (~100 % yield) via both energy and electron transfer processes, which is much superior to that of Co16-MOF-BDC (31.5 %) and Carboxyl @Co16-MOF-BDC (37.5 %). Systematic investigations reveal that the advantages of Bodipy@Co16-MOF-BDC in dual light-absorbing channels, robust bonding between Bodipy/Co16 clusters and efficient electron-hole separation can greatly boost photosynthesis. This work provides an ideal molecular platform for synergy between photosensitizing MOFs and chromophores by constructing high-nuclear transition-metal-based SBUs with surface-modifiable small molecules.

Microporous Materials in Polymer Electrolytes: The Merit of Order

Solid-state batteries (SSBs) have garnered significant attention in the critical field of sustainable energy storage due to their potential benefits in safety, energy density, and cycle life. The large-scale, cost-effective production of SSBs necessitates the development of high-performance solid-state electrolytes. However, the manufacturing of SSBs relies heavily on the advancement of suitable solid-state electrolytes. Composite polymer electrolytes (CPEs), which combine the advantages of ordered microporous materials (OMMs) and polymer electrolytes, meet the requirements for high ionic conductivity/transference number, stability with respect to electrodes, compatibility with established manufacturing processes, and cost-effectiveness, making them particularly well-suited for mass production of SSBs. This review delineates how structural ordering dictates the fundamental physicochemical properties of OMMs, including ion transport, thermal transfer, and mechanical stability. The applications of prominent OMMs are critically examined, such as metal-organic frameworks, covalent organic frameworks, and zeolites, in CPEs, highlighting how structural ordering facilitates the fulfillment of property requirements. Finally, an outlook on the field is provided, exploring how the properties of CPEs can be enhanced through the dimensional design of OMMs, and the importance of uncovering the underlying "feature-function" mechanisms of various CPE types is underscored.

Controllable Silver Release for Efficient Treatment of Drug-Resistant Bacterial-Infected Wounds

The use of traditional Ag-based antibacterial agents is usually accompanied by uncontrollable silver release, which makes it difficult to find a balance between antibacterial performance and biosafety. Herein, we prepared a core-shell system of ZIF-8-derived amorphous carbon-coated Ag nanoparticles (Ag@C) as an ideal research model to reveal the synergistic effect and structure-activity relationship of the structural transformation of carbon shell and Ag core on the regulation of silver release behavior. It is found that Ag@C prepared at 600 °C (AC6) exhibits the best ion release kinetics due to the combination of relatively simple shell structure and lower crystallinity of the Ag core, thereby exerting stronger antibacterial properties (>99.999 %) at trace doses (20 μg mL-1) compared with most other Ag-based materials. Meanwhile, the carbon shell prevents the metal Ag from being directly exposed to the organism and thus endows AC6 with excellent biocompatibility. In animal experiments, AC6 can effectively promote wound healing by inactivating drug-resistant bacteria while regulating the expression of TNF-α and CD31. This work provides theoretical support for the scientific design and clinical application of controllable ion-releasing antibacterial agents.

Metalation of metal-organic frameworks: fundamentals and applications

Metalation of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has been developed as a prominent strategy for materials functionalization for pore chemistry modulation and property optimization. By introducing exotic metal ions/complexes/nanoparticles onto/into the parent framework, many metallized MOFs have exhibited significantly improved performance in a wide range of applications. In this review, we focus on the research progress in the metalation of metal-organic frameworks during the last five years, spanning the design principles, synthetic strategies, and potential applications. Based on the crystal engineering principles, a minor change in the MOF composition through metalation would lead to leveraged variation of properties. This review starts from the general strategies established for the incorporation of metal species within MOFs, followed by the design principles to graft the desired functionality while maintaining the porosity of frameworks. Facile metalation has contributed a great number of bespoke materials with excellent performance, and we summarize their applications in gas adsorption and separation, heterogeneous catalysis, detection and sensing, and energy storage and conversion. The underlying mechanisms are also investigated by state-of-the-art techniques and analyzed for gaining insight into the structure-property relationships, which would in turn facilitate the further development of design principles. Finally, the current challenges and opportunities in MOF metalation have been discussed, and the promising future directions for customizing the next-generation advanced materials have been outlined as well.

Synthesis, structure and photoluminescence properties of heterometallic-based coordination polymers of trimesic acid

Reacting trimesic acid (H3TMA, C9H6O6) with CaCl2 and MCl2 at 110 °C under hydrothermal conditions gave the isostructural heterobimetallic coordination polymers (CPs) catena-poly[[tetraaquazinc(II)]-μ-5-carboxybenzene-1,3-dicarboxylato-[tetraaquacalcium(II)]-μ-5-carboxybenzene-1,3-dicarboxylato], [CaZn(HTMA)2(H2O)8]n, 1, and catena-poly[[tetraaquacobalt(II)]-μ-5-carboxybenzene-1,3-dicarboxylato-[tetraaquacalcium(II)]-μ-5-carboxybenzene-1,3-dicarboxylato], [CaCo(HTMA)2(H2O)8]n, 2. Compounds 1 and 2 crystallize in the monoclinic space group C2/c. The solid-state structures consist of eight-coordinate CaII ions and six-coordinate MII ions. These ions are connected by a doubly deprotonated HTMA2- ligand to create a one-dimensional (1D) zigzag chain. Poly[[decaaquabis(μ3-benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylato)calcium(II)dizinc(II)] dihydrate], {[CaZn2(TMA)2(H2O)10]·2H2O}n, 3, was found incidentally as a minor by-product during the synthesis of 1 at a temperature of 140 °C. It forms crystals in the orthorhombic space group Ccce. The structure of 3 consists of a two-dimensional (2D) layer composed of [Zn(TMA)] chains that are interconnected by CaII ions. The presence of aromatic carboxylic acid ligands and water molecules, which can form numerous hydrogen bonds and π-π interactions, increases the stability of the three-dimensional (3D) supramolecular architecture of these CPs. Compounds 1 and 2 exhibit thermal stability up to 420 °C, as indicated by the thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) curves. The powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) data reveal the formation of unidentified phases in methanol and dimethyl sulfoxide, while 1 exhibits chemical stability in a wide range of solvents. The luminescence properties of 1 dispersed in various low molecular weight organic solvents was also examined. The results demonstrate excellent selectivity, sensitivity and recyclability for detecting acetone molecules in aqueous media. Additionally, a possible sensing mechanism is also outlined.

Recent Advances in Pristine Iron Triad Metal-Organic Framework Cathodes for Alkali Metal-Ion Batteries

Pristine iron triad metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), i.e., Fe-MOFs, Co-MOFs, Ni-MOFs, and heterometallic iron triad MOFs, are utilized as versatile and promising cathodes for alkali metal-ion batteries, owing to their distinctive structure characteristics, including modifiable and designable composition, multi-electron redox-active sites, exceptional porosity, and stable construction facilitating rapid ion diffusion. Notably, pristine iron triad MOFs cathodes have recently achieved significant milestones in electrochemical energy storage due to their exceptional electrochemical properties. Here, the recent advances in pristine iron triad MOFs cathodes for alkali metal-ion batteries are summarized. The redox reaction mechanisms and essential strategies to boost the electrochemical behaviors in associated electrochemical energy storage devices are also explored. Furthermore, insights into the future prospects related to pristine iron triad MOFs cathodes for lithium-ion, sodium-ion, and potassium-ion batteries are also delivered.

Two 2D Metal-Organic Frameworks Based on Purine Carboxylic Acid Ligands for Photocatalytic Oxidation of Sulfides and CO2 Chemical Fixation

Two two-dimensional (2D) layered metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), namely, {[Yb(L)(H2O)2NO3]·2H2O}n (Yb-MOF) and [Er(L)(H2O)3Cl]n (Er-MOF) (H2L = 5-((6H-purin-6-yl)amino)isophthalic acid), were constructed by a solvothermal method and characterized. The catalytic performance study showed that the Yb-MOF could efficiently catalyze the oxidation of sulfides to sulfoxides under 15 W light-emitting diode (LED) blue light irradiation. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy and free-radical trapping experiments demonstrated that the photocatalytic reaction process involved •O2-, and the corresponding mechanism was proposed. Moreover, Er-MOF exhibited good catalytic efficiency and excellent substrate tolerance in the cycloaddition reaction of CO2, and the reaction conditions were mild. After 5 cycles, the catalytic activities of two MOFs did not significantly decrease, and the framework structures remained unchanged. Therefore, the Yb-MOF and Er-MOF were considered efficient and stable heterogeneous catalysts.

MoO3/MIL-125-NH2 with boosted peroxidase-like activity for electrochemical staphylococcus aureus sensing via specific recognition of bacteriophages

Herein, novel nanozyme mimics MoO3/MIL-125-NH2 were reported and conjugated with bacteriophages as a new electrochemical probe for high sensitivity and specific electrochemical detection of staphylococcus aureus. The excellent peroxidase-like activity of MoO3/MIL-125-NH2 composites was attributed to the integration of MIL-125-NH2 with MoO3, which can boost the generation of superoxide radicals (O• 2-) and thus promote the oxidation of TMB in the presence of H2O2. In this work, two bacteriophages named SapYZU04 and SapYZU10 were isolated from sewage samples by using staphylococcus aureus YZUsa12 as the host. In comparison, MoO3/MIL-125-NH2@SapYZU04 was selected as a recognition agent. The DPV current declined linearly with staphylococcus aureus YZUsa12 concentration in the range of 101-108 CFU mL-1, with a low detection limit of 16 CFU mL-1 (S/N = 3). 20 strains including 13 host strains and 7 non-host strains were used to evaluate the selectivity of the proposed sensor. Regardless of the differences in the degrees of lytic performance for phage SapYZU04, all selected host strains can be screened with merely the same DPV current. Host spectrum-oriented bacteriophage sensing is of great importance for the practical application of bacteriophage-based biosensors in the future.

The Influence of Light-Generated Radicals for Highly Efficient Solar-Thermal Conversion in an Ultra-Stable 2D Metal-Organic Assembly

Solar-thermal water evaporation is a promising strategy for clean water production, which needs the development of solar-thermal conversion materials with both high efficiency and high stability. Herein, we reported an ultra-stable cobalt(II)-organic assembly NKU-123 with light-generated radicals, exhibiting superior photothermal conversion efficiency and high stability. Under the irradiation of 808 nm light, the temperature of NKU-123 rapidly increases from 25.5 to 215.1 °C in 6 seconds. The solar water evaporator based on NKU-123 achieves a high solar-thermal water evaporation rate of 1.442 and 1.299 kg m-2 h-1 under 1-sun irradiation with a water evaporation efficiency of 97.8 and 87.9 % for pure water and seawater, respectively. A detailed mechanism study revealed that the formation of light-generated radicals leads to an increase of spin density of NKU-123 for enhancing the photothermal effect, which provides insights into the design of highly efficient photothermal materials.

Regulating electron transfer and orbital interaction within metalloporphyrin-MOFs for highly sensitive NO2 sensing

The understanding of electron transfer pathways and orbital interactions between analytes and adsorption sites in gas-sensitive studies, especially at the atomic level, is currently limited. Herein, we have designed eight isoreticular catechol-metalloporphyrin scaffolds, FeTCP-M and InTCP-M (TCP = 5,10,15,20-tetrakis-catechol-porphyrin, M = Fe, Co, Ni and Zn) with adjustable charge transfer schemes in the coordination microenvironment and precise tuning of orbital interactions between analytes and adsorption sites, which can be used as models for exploring the influence of these factors on gas sensing. Our experimental findings indicate that the sensitivity and selectivity can be modulated using the type of metals in the metal-catechol chains (which regulate the electron transfer routes) and the metalloporphyrin rings (which fine-tune the orbital interactions between analytes and adsorption sites). Among the isostructures, InTCP-Co demonstrates the highest response and selectivity to NO2 under visible light irradiation, which could be attributed to the more favorable transfer pathway of charge carriers in the coordination microenvironment under visible light illumination, as well as the better electron spin state compatibility, higher orbital overlap and orbital symmetry matching between the N-2s2pz hybrid orbital of NO2 and the Co-3dz2 orbital of InTCP-Co.

Progressive Insights into Metal-Organic Frameworks and Metal-Organic Framework-Membrane Composite Systems for Wastewater Management

The sustainable management of wastewater through recycling and utilization stands as a pressing concern in the trajectory of societal advancement. Prioritizing the elimination of diverse organic contaminants is paramount in wastewater treatment, garnering significant attention from researchers worldwide. Emerging metal-organic framework materials (MOFs), bridging organic and inorganic attributes, have surfaced as novel adsorbents, showcasing pivotal potential in wastewater remediation. Nevertheless, challenges like limited water stability, elevated dissolution rates, and inadequate hydrophobicity persist in the context of wastewater treatment. To enhance the performance of MOFs, they can be modified through chemical or physical methods, and combined with membrane materials as additives to create membrane composite materials. These membrane composites, derived from MOFs, exhibit remarkable characteristics including enhanced porosity, adjustable pore dimensions, superior permeability, optimal conductivity, and robust water stability. Their ability to effectively sequester organic compounds has spurred significant research in this field. This paper introduces methods for enhancing the performance of MOFs and explores their potential applications in water treatment. It delves into the detailed design, synthesis strategies, and fabrication of composite membranes using MOFs. Furthermore, it focuses on the application prospects, challenges, and opportunities associated with MOF composite membranes in water treatment.

Zeolitic Imidazolate-Framework-Engineered Heterointerface Catalysis for the Construction of Plant-Wearable Sensors

Plant-wearable sensors provide real-time information that enables pesticide inputs to be finely tuned and play critical roles in precision agriculture. However, tracking pesticide information in living plants remains a formidable challenge owing to inadequate shape adaptabilities and low in-field sensor sensitivities. In this study, plant-wearable hydrogel discs are designed by embedding a dual-shelled upconversion-nanoparticles@zeolitic-imidazolate-framework@polydopamine (UCNPs@ZIF@PDA) composite in double-network hydrogels to deliver on-site pesticide-residue information. Benefiting from the enzyme-mimetic catalytic activity of ZIFs and enzyme triggered-responsive property of PDA shell, the hydrogel discs are endowed with high sensing sensitivity toward 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid pesticide at the nanogram per milliliter level via boosting fluorescence quenching efficiency. Notably, hydrogel discs mounted on tomato plants exhibit sufficient adaptability to profile dynamic pesticide degradation when used in conjunction with an ImageJ processing algorithm, which is practically applicable. Such hydrogel discs form a noninvasive and low-cost toolkit for the on-site acquisition of pesticide information, thereby contributing to the precise management of the health status of a plant and the judicious development of precision agriculture.

Chitosan/NH2-MIL-125 (Ti) scaffold loaded with doxorubicin for postoperative bone tumor clearance and osteogenesis: An in vitro study

Surgical resection remains the primary treatment modality for bone tumors. However, it is prone to local bone defects and tumor recurrence. Therefore, there is an urgent need for multifunctional biomaterials that combine tumor treatment and bone repair after bone tumor surgery. Herein, a chitosan composite scaffold (CS/DOX@Ti-MOF) was designed for both tumor therapy and bone repair. Among them, the amino-functionalized Ti-based metal-organic framework (NH2-MIL-125 (Ti), Ti-MOF) has a high specific surface area of 1116 m2/g and excellent biocompatibility, and promotes osteogenic differentiation. The doxorubicin (DOX) loading capacity of Ti-MOF was 322 ± 21 mg/g, and DOX@Ti-MOF has perfect antitumor activity. Furthermore, the incorporation of DOX@Ti-MOF improved the physical and mechanical properties of the composite scaffolds, making the scaffold surface rough and favorable for cells to attach. CS/DOX@Ti-MOF retains the unique properties of each component. It responds to the release of DOX in the tumor microenvironment to remove residual tumor cells, followed by providing a site for cell attachment, proliferation, and differentiation. This promotes bone repair and achieves the sequential treatment of postoperative bone tumors. Overall, CS/DOX@Ti-MOF may be a promising substitute for postoperative bone tumor clearance and bone defect repair. It also provides a possible strategy for postoperative bone tumor treatment.

Tannic acid and carboxymethyl chitosan-based multi-functional double-layered hydrogel with pH-stimulated response behavior for smart real-time infection monitoring and wound treatment

The dramatic increase of drug-resistant pathogenic bacteria has seriously effect on human health, appealing the needs of developing theranostic platforms with stimuli-responsive materials to realize the accurate bacterial diagnostics and therapeutics. Herein, a tannic acid and carboxymethyl chitosan-based multifunctional ZIF-90@i-PPOPs-phenol red double-layered hydrogel with stimuli-responsiveness and antibacterial activity was fabricated. The inner layer hydrogel (ZIF-90@i-PPOPs-based TFC hydrogels) was fabricated based on ZIF-90@i-PPOPs, integrate tannic acid and carboxymethyl chitosan linked by formylphenylboronic acid (FPBA), which exhibited outstanding injectable, biodegradability and antibacterial activity. The outer layer hydrogel (PR@PAM hydrogels) were constructed from polyacrylamide (PAM) and pH indicator phenol red, owning porous structure and excellent tissue adhesion. Due to the weakly acidic microenvironment within wound, the inner-layer hydrogel was stimulus-responsively decomposed, resulting in the accurate delivery of the positively charged ZIF-90@i-PPOPs to the lesion site to capture and kill bacteria by enhanced Zn2+ and ROS release. Meantime, the outer-layer hydrogel could real-timely monitor the pH changes to evaluate the wound recovery status. These double-layered hydrogels possessed precisely pH monitoring capacity, excellent antibacterial ability and negligible side effect to normal tissue in vivo, implying the high potential of the suggested hydrogels as theranostic platform for antibacterial treatment.

Design and application of dual-emission metal-organic framework-based ratiometric fluorescence sensors

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are novel inorganic-organic hybridized crystals with a wide range of applications. In the last twenty years, fluorescence sensing based on MOFs has attracted much attention. MOFs can exhibit luminescence from metal nodes, ligands or introduced guests, which provides an excellent fluorescence response in sensing. However, single-signal emitting MOFs are susceptible to interference from concentration, environment, and excitation intensity, resulting in poor accuracy. To overcome the shortcomings, dual-emission MOF-based ratiometric fluorescence sensors have been proposed and rapidly developed. In this review, we first introduce the luminescence mechanisms, synthetic methods, and detection mechanisms of dual-emission MOFs, highlight the strategies for constructing ratiometric fluorescence sensors based on dual-emission MOFs, and classify them into three categories: intrinsic dual-emission and single-emission MOFs with luminescent guests, and non-emission MOFs with other luminescent materials. Then, we summarize the recent advances in dual-emission MOF-based ratiometric fluorescence sensors in various analytical industries. Finally, we discuss the current challenges and prospects for the future development of these sensors.

Non-CO2 greenhouse gas separation using advanced porous materials

Global warming has become a growing concern over decades, prompting numerous research endeavours to reduce the carbon dioxide (CO2) emission, the major greenhouse gas (GHG). However, the contribution of other non-CO2 GHGs including methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), fluorocarbons, perfluorinated gases, etc. should not be overlooked, due to their high global warming potential and environmental hazards. In order to reduce the emission of non-CO2 GHGs, advanced separation technologies with high efficiency and low energy consumption such as adsorptive separation or membrane separation are highly desirable. Advanced porous materials (APMs) including metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs), porous organic polymers (POPs), etc. have been developed to boost the adsorptive and membrane separation, due to their tunable pore structure and surface functionality. This review summarizes the progress of APM adsorbents and membranes for non-CO2 GHG separation. The material design and fabrication strategies, along with the molecular-level separation mechanisms are discussed. Besides, the state-of-the-art separation performance and challenges of various APM materials towards each type of non-CO2 GHG are analyzed, offering insightful guidance for future research. Moreover, practical industrial challenges and opportunities from the aspect of engineering are also discussed, to facilitate the industrial implementation of APMs for non-CO2 GHG separation.

Water-stable metal-organic frameworks (MOFs): rational construction and carbon dioxide capture

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are considered to be a promising porous material due to their excellent porosity and chemical tailorability. However, due to the relatively weak strength of coordination bonds, the stability (e.g., water stability) of MOFs is usually poor, which severely inhibits their practical applications. To prepare water-stable MOFs, several important strategies such as increasing the bonding strength of building units and introducing hydrophobic units have been proposed, and many MOFs with excellent water stability have been prepared. Carbon dioxide not only causes a range of climate and health problems but also is a by-product of some important chemicals (e.g., natural gas). Due to their excellent adsorption performances, MOFs are considered as a promising adsorbent that can capture carbon dioxide efficiently and energetically, and many water-stable MOFs have been used to capture carbon dioxide in various scenarios, including flue gas decarbonization, direct air capture, and purified crude natural gas. In this review, we first introduce the design and synthesis of water-stable MOFs and then describe their applications in carbon dioxide capture, and finally provide some personal comments on the challenges facing these areas.

Two highly stable isoreticular M8-pyrazolate (M = Co, Ni) metal-organic frameworks for CO2 conversion

Two isoreticular metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) constructed from M8(OH)4(H2O)2(pyz)12 (M = Co, Ni; pyz = pyrazolate) secondary building units (SBUs) and Ni(salen)-derived metalloligands were synthesized. The two MOFs were found to be highly stable in a wide pH and temperature range. Together with the tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBAB) co-catalyst, they catalysed the cycloaddition of CO2 to epoxides with near-quantitative yields and easy recyclability for at least 11 cycles.

Dynamic covalent synthesis

Dynamic covalent synthesis aims to precisely control the assembly of simple building blocks linked by reversible covalent bonds to generate a single, structurally complex, product. In recent years, considerable progress in the programmability of dynamic covalent systems has enabled easy access to a broad range of assemblies, including macrocycles, shape-persistent cages, unconventional foldamers and mechanically-interlocked species (catenanes, knots, etc.). The reversibility of the covalent linkages can be either switched off to yield stable, isolable products or activated by specific physico-chemical stimuli, allowing the assemblies to adapt and respond to environmental changes in a controlled manner. This activatable dynamic property makes dynamic covalent assemblies particularly attractive for the design of complex matter, smart chemical systems, out-of-equilibrium systems, and molecular devices.

Stability of Zr-Based UiO-66 Metal-Organic Frameworks in Basic Solutions

Although Zr-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) exhibit robust chemical and physical stability in the presence of moisture and acidic conditions, their susceptibility to nucleophilic attacks from bases poses a critical challenge to their overall stability. Herein, we systematically investigate the stability of Zr-based UiO-66 (UiO = University of Oslo) MOFs in basic solutions. The impact of 11 standard bases, including inorganic salts and organic bases, on the stability of these MOFs is examined. The destruction of the framework is confirmed through powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) patterns, and the monitored dissolution of ligands from the framework is assessed using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Our key findings reveal a direct correlation between the strength and concentration of the base and the destruction of the MOFs. The summarized data provide valuable insights that can guide the practical application of Zr-based UiO-66 MOFs under basic conditions, offering essential information for their optimal utilization in various settings.

Efficient C2H6/C2H4 adsorption separation by a microporous heterometal-organic framework

Purification of ethylene (C2H4) is an essential and energy-intensive process in the petrochemical industry. Adsorption separation using ethane (C2H6)-selective porous adsorbents is a highly efficient and straightforward method for obtaining polymer-grade C2H4 from a binary C2H6/C2H4 mixture. However, the design and construction of C2H6-selective adsorbents are very challenging tasks. Herein, we demonstrate a microporous heterometal-organic framework, CuIn(ina)4, can preferentially enrich C2H6 than C2H4. Experimental results revealed that CuIn(ina)4 exhibited remarkable separation performance for the C2H6/C2H4 mixture with a high C2H6 loading capacity (3.3 mmol/g), high IAST selectivity (2.3) and separation potential (1578 mmol/L for equimolar C2H6/C2H4 mixture) under ambient conditions. The effectiveness of CuIn(ina)4 for C2H6/C2H4 adsorption separation was confirmed by theoretical calculations and breakthrough experiments.

Porphyrin-based Bi-MOFs with Enriched Surface Bi Active Sites for Boosting Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction

The inherent challenges in using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for photocatalytic CO2 reduction are the combination of wide-range light harvesting, efficient charge separation and transfer as well as highly exposed catalytic active sites for CO2 activation and reduction. We present here a promising solution to satisfy these requirements together by modulating the crystal facet and surface atomic structure of a porphyrin-based bismuth-MOF (Bi-PMOF). The series of structural and photo-electronic characterizations together with photocatalytic CO2 reduction experiment collectively establish that the enriched Bi active sites on the (010) surface prefer to promote efficient charge separation and transfer as well as the activation and reduction of CO2 . Specifically, the Bi-PMOFs-120-F with enriched surface Bi active sites exhibits optimal photocatalytic CO2 reduction performance to CO (28.61 μmol h-1 g-1 ) and CH4 (8.81 μmol h-1 g-1 ). This work provides new insights to synthesize highly efficient main group p-block metal Bi-MOF photocatalysts for CO2 reduction through a facet-regulation strategy and sheds light on the surface structure-activity relationships of the MOFs.

Fusing Positive and Negative CT Contrast Nanoagent for the Sensitive Detection of Hepatoma

Positive computed tomography (CT) contrast nanoagent has significant applications in diagnosing tumors. However, the sensitive differentiation between hepatoma and normal liver tissue remains challenging. This challenge arises primarily because both normal liver and hepatoma tissues capture the nanoagent, resulting in similar positive CT contrasts. Here, a strategy for fusing positive and negative CT contrast nanoagent is proposed to detect hepatoma. A nanoagent Hf-MOF@AB@PVP initially generates a positive CT contrast signal of 120.3 HU in the liver. Subsequently, it can specifically respond to the acidic microenvironment of hepatoma to generate H2 , further achieving a negative contrast of -96.0 HU. More importantly, the relative position between the negative and positive signals area is helpful to determine the location of hepatoma and normal liver tissues. The distinct contrast difference of 216.3 HU and relative orientation between normal liver and tumor tissues are meaningful to sensitively distinguish hepatoma from normal liver tissue utilizing CT imaging.

Exploring the antimicrobial potential of isoniazid loaded Cu-based metal-organic frameworks as a novel strategy for effective killing of Mycobacterium tuberculosis

Tuberculosis (TB) remains one of the most infectious pathogens with the highest human mortality and morbidity. Biofilm formation during Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) infection is responsible for bacterial growth, communication, and, most essentially, increased resistance/tolerance to antibiotics leading to higher bacterial persistence. Thus, biofilm growth is presently considered a key virulence factor in the case of chronic disease. Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) have recently emerged as a highly efficient system to improve existing antibiotics' therapeutic efficacy and reduce adverse effects. In this regard, we have synthesized Cu-MOF (IITI-3) using a solvothermal approach. IITI-3 was well characterized by various spectroscopic techniques. Herein, IITI-3 was first encapsulated with isoniazid (INH) to form INH@IITI-3 with 10 wt% loading within 1 hour. INH@IITI-3 was well characterized by PXRD, TGA, FTIR, and BET surface area analysis. Furthermore, the drug release kinetics studies of INH@IITI-3 have been performed at pH 5.8 and 7.4 to mimic the small intestine and blood pH, respectively. The results show that drug release follows first-order kinetics. Furthermore, the antimycobacterial activity of INH@IITI-3 demonstrated significant bacterial killing and altered the structural morphology of the bacteria. Moreover, INH@IITI-3 was able to inhibit the mycobacterial biofilm formation upon treatment and showed less cytotoxicity toward the murine RAW264.7 macrophages. Thus, this work significantly opens up new possibilities for the applications of INH@IITI-3 in biofilm infections in Mtb and further contributes to TB therapeutics.

Modulation of defects in metal organic gels to enhance anhydrous proton conduction from subzero to moderate temperature

Exploitation of solid-state proton-conducting materials with high anhydrous proton conductivity from subzero temperature (<273 K) to moderate temperature (>353 K) is a great challenge. Here, Brönsted acid-dopped zirconium-organic xerogels (Zr/BTC-xerogels) are prepared for anhydrous proton conduction from subzero to moderate temperature. Abundant acid sites and strong H-bonding interactions make the CF3SO3H (TMSA)-introduced xerogel gain high proton conductivity from 9.0 × 10-4 S cm-1 (253 K) to 1.40 × 10-2 S cm-1 (363 K) under anhydrous conditions, which are in the leading level. This provides a new possibility to develop wide-operating-temperature conductors.

Reticular framework materials for photocatalytic organic reactions

Photocatalytic organic reactions, harvesting solar energy to produce high value-added organic chemicals, have attracted increasing attention as a sustainable approach to address the global energy crisis and environmental issues. Reticular framework materials, including metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs), are widely considered as promising candidates for photocatalysis owing to their high crystallinity, tailorable pore environment and extensive structural diversity. Although the design and synthesis of MOFs and COFs have been intensively developed in the last 20 years, their applications in photocatalytic organic transformations are still in the preliminary stage, making their systematic summary necessary. Thus, this review aims to provide a comprehensive understanding and useful guidelines for the exploration of suitable MOF and COF photocatalysts towards appropriate photocatalytic organic reactions. The commonly used reactions are categorized to facilitate the identification of suitable reaction types. From a practical viewpoint, the fundamentals of experimental design, including active species, performance evaluation and external reaction conditions, are discussed in detail for easy experimentation. Furthermore, the latest advances in photocatalytic organic reactions of MOFs and COFs, including their composites, are comprehensively summarized according to the actual active sites, together with the discussion of their structure-property relationship. We believe that this study will be helpful for researchers to design novel reticular framework photocatalysts for various organic synthetic applications.

Three Robust Isoreticular Metal-Organic Frameworks with High-Performance Selective CO2 Capture and Separation

Based on the hard-soft acid base (HSAB) theory, three robust isoreticular metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with nia topology were successfully synthesized by solvothermal reaction {[In3O(BHB)(H2O)3]NO3·3DMA (JLU-MOF110(In)), [Fe3O(BHB)(H2O)3]NO3 (JLU-MOF110(Fe)), and [Fe2NiO(BHB)(H2O)3] (JLU-MOF110(FeNi)) (DMA = N,N-dimethylacetamide, H6BHB = 4,4″-benzene-1,3,5-triyl-hexabenzoic acid)}. Both JLU-MOF110(In) and JLU-MOF110(Fe) are cationic frameworks, and their BET surface areas are 301 and 446 m2/g, respectively. By modification of the components of metal clusters, JLU-MOF110(FeNi) features a neutral framework, and the BET surface area is increased up to 808 m2/g. All three MOF materials exhibit high chemical and thermal stability. JLU-MOF110(In) remains stable for 24 h at pH values ranging from 1 to 11, while JLU-MOF110(Fe) and JLU-MOF110(FeNi) persist to be stable for 24 h at pH from 1 to 12. JLU-MOF110(In) exhibits thermal stability up to 350 °C, whereas JLU-MOF110(Fe) and JLU-MOF(FeNi) can be stable up to 300 °C. Thanks to the microporous cage-based structure and abundant open metal sites, JLU-MOF110(In), JLU-MOF110(Fe), and JLU-MOF110(FeNi) have excellent CO2 capture capacity (28.0, 51.5, and 99.6 cm3/g, respectively, under 298 K and 1 bar). Interestingly, the ideal adsorption solution theory results show that all three MOFs exhibit high separation selectivity toward CO2 over N2 (35.2, 43.2, and 43.2 for CO2/N2 = 0.15/0.85) and CO2 over CH4 (14.4, 11.5, and 10.1 for CO2/CH4 = 0.5/0.5) at 298 K and 1 bar. Thus, all three MOFs are potential candidates for CO2 capture and separation. Among them, JLU-MOF110(FeNi) displays the best separation potential, as revealed by dynamic column breakthrough experiments.

Positional Isomers of Covalent Organic Frameworks for Indoor Humidity Regulation

Humidity is one of the most important indicators affecting human health. Here, a pair of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) of positional isomers (p-COF and o-COF) for indoor humidity regulation is reported. Although p-COF and o-COF have the same sql topology and pore size, they exhibit different water adsorption behaviors due to the subtle differences in water adsorption sites. Particularly, o-COF exhibits a steep adsorption isotherm in the range of 45-65% RH with a hysteresis loop, which is perfectly suitable for indoor humidity regulation. In the laboratory experiment, when the humidity of the external environment is 20-75% RH, o-COF can control the humidity of the room in the range of 45-60% RH. o-COF has shown great potential as a dual humidification/dehumidification adsorbent for indoor humidity regulation.

Coordination Polymers from an Amino-Functionalized Terphenyl-Tetracarboxylate Linker: Structural Multiplicity and Catalytic Properties

An amino-functionalized terphenyl-tetracarboxylic acid, 2'-amino-[1,1':4',1″-terphenyl]-3,3″,5,5″-tetracarboxylic acid (H4tpta), was used as an adaptable linker to synthesize, under hydrothermal conditions, eight coordination polymers (CPs). The obtained products were formulated as [Co(μ6-H2tpta)]n (1), [Co(μ3-H2tpta)(2,2'-bipy)]n (2), [M3(μ6-Htpta)2(2,2'-bipy)2]n (M = Mn (3), Cd (4)), [Ni2(μ4-tpta)(phen)2(H2O)4]n (5), [Zn2(μ6-tpta)(phen)2]n (6), {[Zn2(μ6-tpta)(μ-4,4'-bipy)]·H2O}n (7), and [Zn2(μ6-tpta)(μ-H2biim)(H2O)2]n (8), wherein 2,2'-bipyridine (2,2'-bipy), 4,4'-bipyridine (4,4'-bipy), 1,10-phenanthroline (phen), or 2,2'-biimidazole (H2biim) are present as additional stabilizing ligands. The structural types of 1-8 vary from one-dimensional (1D) (2, 5) and two-dimensional (2D) (3, 4, 6) CPs to three-dimensional (3D) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) (1, 7, and 8) with a diversity of topologies. The products 1-8 were investigated as catalysts in the Knoevenagel condensation involving aldehydes and active methylene derivatives (malononitrile, ethyl cyanoacetate, or tert-butyl cyanoacetate), leading to high condensation product yields (up to 99%) under optimized conditions. Various reaction conditions, substrate scope, and catalyst recycling were investigated. This work broadens the application of H4tpta as a versatile tetracarboxylate linker for the generation of diverse CPs/MOFs.

Tunable metal-organic frameworks assist in catalyzing DNAzymes with amplification platforms for biomedical applications

Various binding modes of tunable metal organic frameworks (MOFs) and functional DNAzymes (Dzs) synergistically catalyze the emergence of abundant functional nanoplatforms. Given their serial variability in formation, structural designability, and functional controllability, Dzs@MOFs tend to be excellent building blocks for the precise "intelligent" manufacture of functional materials. To present a clear outline of this new field, this review systematically summarizes the progress of Dz integration into MOFs (MOFs@Dzs) through different methods, including various surface infiltration, pore encapsulation, covalent binding, and biomimetic mineralization methods. Atomic-level and time-resolved catalytic mechanisms for biosensing and imaging are made possible by the complex interplay of the distinct molecular structure of Dzs@MOF, conformational flexibility, and dynamic regulation of metal ions. Exploiting the precision of DNAzymes, MOFs@Dzs constructed a combined nanotherapy platform to guide intracellular drug synthesis, photodynamic therapy, catalytic therapy, and immunotherapy to enhance gene therapy in different ways, solving the problems of intracellular delivery inefficiency and insufficient supply of cofactors. MOFs@Dzs nanostructures have become excellent candidates for biosensing, bioimaging, amplification delivery, and targeted cancer gene therapy while emphasizing major advancements and seminal endeavors in the fields of biosensing (nucleic acid, protein, enzyme activity, small molecules, and cancer cells), biological imaging, and targeted cancer gene delivery and gene therapy. Overall, based on the results demonstrated to date, we discuss the challenges that the emerging MOFs@Dzs might encounter in practical future applications and briefly look forward to their bright prospects in other fields.

Construction of Negative Electrostatic Pore Environments in a Scalable, Stable and Low-Cost Metal-organic Framework for One-Step Ethylene Purification from Ternary Mixtures

One-step separation of C2 H4 from ternary C2 mixtures by physisorbents remains a challenge to combine excellent separation performance with high stability, low cost, and easy scalability for industrial applications. Herein, we report a strategy of constructing negative electrostatic pore environments in a stable, low-cost, and easily scaled-up aluminum MOF (MOF-303) for efficient one-step C2 H2 /C2 H6 /C2 H4 separation. This material exhibits not only record high C2 H2 and C2 H6 uptakes, but also top-tier C2 H2 /C2 H4 and C2 H6 /C2 H4 selectivities at ambient conditions. Theoretical calculations combined with in situ infrared spectroscopy indicate that multiple N/O sites on pore channels can build a negative electro-environment to provide stronger interactions with C2 H2 and C2 H6 over C2 H4 . Breakthrough experiments confirm its exceptional separation performance for ternary mixtures, affording one of the highest C2 H4 productivity of 1.35 mmol g-1 . This material is highly stable and can be easily synthesized at kilogram-scale from cheap raw materials using a water-based green synthesis. The benchmark combination of excellent separation properties with high stability and low cost in scalable MOF-303 has unlocked its great potential in this challenging industrial separation.

Target-modulated mineralization of wood channels as enzyme-free electrochemical sensors for detecting amyloid-β species

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is an irreversible brain disorder, which has been found to be associated with neurotoxic amyloid-β oligomers (AβO). The early diagnosis of AD is still a great challenge. Herein, inspired by the hierarchical channel structure of natural wood, we design and demonstrate a low-cost and sensitive wood channel-based fluidic membrane for electrochemical sensing of AβO1-42. In this design, Zn/Cu-2-methylimidazole (Zn/Cu-Hmim) with artificial peroxidase (POD)-like activity was asymmetrically fabricated at one side of the wood channels by biomimetic mineralization and a subsequent ion exchange reaction. The strong affinity between Cu(II) and AβO1-42 enables Cu(II) species in Zn/Cu-Hmim to be extracted by AβO1-42, thus suppressing the POD-like performance via Zn/Cu-Hmim disassembly. Using Zn/Cu-Hmim to catalyze the oxidation reaction of 2,2'-diazo-bis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) by H2O2, the current-voltage (I-V) properties of wood channels are influenced by the generated oxidation product (ABTS•+), thus providing information useful for the quantitative analysis of AβO1-42. Importantly, the three aggregation states of Aβ1-42 (AβM1-42, AβO1-42, and AβF1-42) can also be identified, owing to the affinity difference and available reaction sites. The proposed wood membrane provides a novel, assessable, and scalable channel device to develop sensitive electrochemical sensors; moreover, the sustainable wood materials represent alternative candidates for developing channel-structured sensing platforms.

Active Sites Decorated Nonpolar Pore-Based MOF for One-step Acquisition of C2 H4 and Recovery of C3 H6

Herein, a 2-fold interpenetrated metal-organic framework (MOF) Zn-BPZ-TATB with accessible N/O active sites in nonpolar pore surfaces was reported for one-step C2 H4 purification from C2 H6 or C3 H6 mixtures as well as recovery of C3 H6 from C2 H6 /C3 H6 /C2 H4 mixtures. The MOF exhibits the favorable C2 H6 and C3 H6 uptakes (>100 cm3  g-1 at 298 K under 100 kPa) as well as selective adsorption of C2 H6 and C3 H6 over C2 H4 . The C3 H6 - and C2 H6 -selective feature were investigated detailedly by experimental tests as well as sorption kinetic studyies. Molecular modelling revealed the multiple interactions between C3 H6 or C2 H6 molecules and methyl groups as well as triazine rings in pores. Zn-BPZ-TATB not only can directly generate 323.4 L kg-1 and 15.4 L kg-1 of high-purity (≥99.9 %) C2 H4 from C3 H6 /C2 H4 and C2 H6 /C2 H4 mixtures, but also provide a large high-purity (≥99.5 %) C3 H6 recovery capacity of 60.1 L kg-1 from C3 H6 /C2 H4 mixtures. More importantly, the high-purity C3 H6 (≥99.5 %) and C2 H4 (≥99.9 %) with the productivities of 38.2 and 12.7 L kg-1 can be simultaneously obtained from C2 H6 /C3 H6 /C2 H4 mixtures through a single adsorption/desorption cycle.

Incorporation of multiple supramolecular binding sites into a robust MOF for benchmark one-step ethylene purification

One-step adsorption separation of C2H4 from ternary C2 hydrocarbon mixtures remains an important and challenging goal for petrochemical industry. Current physisorbents either suffer from unsatisfied separation performance, poor stability, or are difficult to scale up. Herein, we report a strategy of constructing multiple supramolecular binding sites in a robust and scalable MOF (Al-PyDC) for highly efficient one-step C2H4 purification from ternary mixtures. Owing to suitable pore confinement with multiple supramolecular binding sites, Al-PyDC exhibits one of the highest C2H2 and C2H6 uptakes and selectivities over C2H4 at ambient conditions. The gas binding sites have been visualized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies, unveiling that the low-polarity pore surfaces with abundant electronegative N/O sites provide stronger multiple supramolecular interactions with C2H2 and C2H6 over C2H4. Breakthrough experiments showed that polymer-grade C2H4 can be separated from ternary mixtures with a maximum productivity of 1.61 mmol g-1. This material can be prepared from two simple reagents using a green synthesis method with water as the sole solvent, and its synthesis can be easily scaled to multikilogram batches. Al-PyDC achieves an effective combination of benchmark separation performance, high stability/recyclability, green synthesis and easy scalability to address major challenges for industrial one-step C2H4 purification.

Regulation of Bimetallic Coordination Centers in MOF Catalyst for Electrochemical CO2 Reduction to Formate

Electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 to valuable chemicals can alleviate the energy crisis, and solve the greenhouse effect. The key is to develop non-noble metal electrocatalysts with high activity, selectivity, and stability. Herein, bimetallic metal organic frameworks (MOFs) materials (BiZn-MOF, BiSn-MOF, and BiIn-MOF) were constructed by coordinating the metals Zn, In, Sn, and Bi with the organic ligand 3-amino-1H-1,2,4-triazole-5-carboxylic acid (H2atzc) through a rapid microwave synthesis approach. The coordination centers in bimetallic MOF catalyst were regulated to optimize the catalytic performance for electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR). The optimized catalyst BiZn-MOF exhibited higher catalytic activity than those of Bi-MOF, BiSn-MOF, and BiIn-MOF. BiZn-MOF exhibited a higher selectivity for formate production with a Faradic efficiency (FE = 92%) at a potential of -0.9 V (vs. RHE, reversible hydrogen electrode) with a current density of 13 mA cm-2. The current density maintained continuous electrolysis for 13 h. The electrochemical conversion of CO2 to formate mainly follows the *OCHO pathway. The good catalytic performance of BiZn-MOF may be attributed to the Bi-Zn bimetallic coordination centers in the MOF, which can reduce the binding energies of the reaction intermediates by tuning the electronic structure and atomic arrangement. This study provides a feasible strategy for performance optimization of bismuth-based catalysts.

Synergistic Metal-Nonmetal Active Sites in a Metal-Organic Cage for Efficient Photocatalytic Synthesis of Hydrogen Peroxide in Pure Water

Photocatalytic synthesis of hydrogen peroxide (H2 O2 ) is a potential clean method, but the long distance between the oxidation and reduction sites in photocatalysts hinders the rapid transfer of photogenerated charges, limiting the improvement of its performance. Here, a metal-organic cage photocatalyst, Co14 (L-CH3 )24 , is constructed by directly coordinating metal sites (Co sites) used for the O2 reduction reaction (ORR) with non-metallic sites (imidazole sites of ligands) used for the H2 O oxidation reaction (WOR), which shortens the transport path of photogenerated electrons and holes, and improves the transport efficiency of charges and activity of the photocatalyst. Therefore, it can be used as an efficient photocatalyst with a rate of as high as 146.6 μmol g-1  h-1 for H2 O2 production under O2 -saturated pure water without sacrificial agents. Significantly, the combination of photocatalytic experiments and theoretical calculations proves that the functionalized modification of ligands is more conducive to adsorbing key intermediates (*OH for WOR and *HOOH for ORR), resulting in better performance. This work proposed a new catalytic strategy for the first time; i.e., to build a synergistic metal-nonmetal active site in the crystalline catalyst and use the host-guest chemistry inherent in the metal-organic cage (MOC)to increase the contact between the substrate and the catalytically active site, and finally achieve efficient photocatalytic H2 O2 synthesis.

Linker Engineering for Reactive Oxygen Species Generation Efficiency in Ultra-Stable Nickel-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks

Interfacial charge transfer on the surface of heterogeneous photocatalysts dictates the efficiency of reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and therefore the efficiency of aerobic oxidation reactions. Reticular chemistry in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) allows for the rational design of donor-acceptor pairs to optimize interfacial charge-transfer kinetics. Herein, we report a series of isostructural fcu-topology Ni8-MOFs (termed JNU-212, JNU-213, JNU-214, and JNU-215) with linearly bridged bipyrazoles as organic linkers. These crystalline Ni8-MOFs can maintain their structural integrity in 7 M NaOH at 100 °C for 24 h. Experimental studies reveal that linker engineering by tuning the electron-accepting capacity of the pyrazole-bridging units renders these Ni8-MOFs with significantly improved charge separation and transfer efficiency under visible-light irradiation. Among them, the one containing a benzoselenadiazole unit (JNU-214) exhibits the best photocatalytic performance in the aerobic oxidation of benzylamines with a conversion rate of 99% in 24 h. Recycling experiments were carried out to confirm the stability and reusability of JNU-214 as a robust heterogeneous catalyst. Significantly, the systematic modulation of the electron-accepting capacity of the bridging units in donor-acceptor-donor MOFs provides a new pathway to develop viable noble-metal-free heterogeneous photocatalysts for aerobic oxidation reactions.

Rational design of stable functional metal-organic frameworks

Functional porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been explored for a number of potential applications in catalysis, chemical sensing, water capture, gas storage, and separation. MOFs are among the most promising candidates to address challenges facing our society related to energy and environment, but the successful implementation of functional porous MOF materials are contingent on their stability; therefore, the rational design of stable MOFs plays an important role towards the development of functional porous MOFs. In this Focus article, we summarize progress in the rational design and synthesis of stable MOFs with controllable pores and functionalities. The implementation of reticular chemistry allows for the rational top-down design of stable porous MOFs with targeted topological networks and pore structures from the pre-selected building blocks. We highlight the reticular synthesis and applications of stable MOFs: (1) MOFs based on high valent metal ions (e.g., Al3+, Cr3+, Fe3+, Ti4+ and Zr4+) and carboxylate ligands; (2) MOFs based on low valent metal ions (e.g., Ni2+, Cu2+, and Zn2+) and azolate linkers. We envision that the synthetic strategies, including modulated synthesis and post-synthetic modification, can potentially be extended to other more complex systems like metal-phosphonate framework materials.

Polyamidoamine Dendrimers Functionalized Water-Stable Metal-Organic Frameworks for Sensitive Fluorescent Detection of Heavy Metal Ions in Aqueous Solution

In this work, polyamidoamine (PAMAM)-functionalized water-stable Al-based metal-organic frameworks (MIL-53(Al)-NH2) were proposed with enhanced fluorescence intensity, and used for the sensitive detection of heavy metal ions in aqueous solution. The size and morphology of MIL-53(Al)-NH2 were effectively optimized by regulating the component of the reaction solvents. PAMAM dendrimers were subsequently grafted onto the surface with glutaraldehyde as a cross-linking agent. It was found that the size and morphology of MIL-53(Al)-NH2 have great influence on their fluorescence properties, and PAMAM grafting could distinctly further improve their fluorescence intensity. With higher fluorescence intensity, the PAMAM-grafted MIL-53(Al)-NH2 showed good linearity (R2 = 0.9925-0.9990) and satisfactory sensitivity (LOD = 1.1-8.6 μmol) in heavy metal ions determination. Fluorescence enhancement and heavy metal ions detection mechanisms were discussed following the experimental results. Furthermore, analogous water-stable Materials of Institute Lavoisier (MIL) metal-organic frameworks such as MIL-53(Fe)-NH2 were also proved to have similar fluorescence enhancement performance after PAMAM modification, which demonstrates the universality of the method and the great application prospects in the design of PAMAM-functionalized high-sensitivity fluorescence sensors.

Six metal-organic architectures from a 5-methoxyisophthalate linker: assembly, structural variety and catalytic features

A methoxy-functionalized isophthalic acid, 5-methoxy isophthalic acid (H2mia), was used a versatile linker for assembling six new metal(ii) compounds under hydrothermal conditions. The obtained products were [Cu2(μ2-mia)2(phen)2(H2O)2]·2H2O (1), [Mn(μ3-mia)(phen)]n (2), [Co(μ2-mia)(2,2'-bipy)(H2O)]n·nH2O (3), [Co(μ3-mia)(μ2-4,4'-bipy)]n·nH2O (4), [Co(μ3-mia)(py)2]n (5), and [Cd(μ2-mia)(py)(H2O)2]n·nH2O (6), where phen(1,10-phenanthroline), 2,2'-bipy(2,2'-bipyridine), 4,4'-bipy(4,4'-bipyridine) or py(pyridine) were incorporated as auxiliary ligands. The crystal structures of 1-6 range from 0D (1) and 1D (2, 3, 5, 6) CPs to a 2D network (4) with a variety of topological types. The catalytic behavior of 1-6 was studied in the cyanosilylation reaction between trimethylsilyl cyanide and aldehydes, resulting in up to 99% yields of products under optimized conditions. Various reaction parameters as well as catalyst recycling and substrate scope were investigated. This study widens the use of H2mia as a versatile dicarboxylate linker for assembling a diversity of functional metal-organic architectures with remarkable structural features and catalytic properties.

Enhanced the Efficiency of Electrocatalytic CO2 -to-CO Conversion by Cd Species Anchored into Metal-Organic Framework

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as a promising platform for electrocatalytic CO2 conversion are still restricted by the low efficiency or unsatisfied selectivity for desired products. Herein, zirconium-based porphyrinic MOF hollow nanotubes with Cd sites (Cd-PCN-222HTs) are reported for electrocatalytic CO2 -to-CO conversion. The dispersed Cd species are anchored in PCN-222HTs and coordinated by N atoms of porphyrin structures. It is discovered that Cd-PCN-222HTs have glorious electrocatalytic activity for selective CO production in ionic liquid-water (H2 O)-acetonitrile (MeCN) electrolyte. The CO Faradaic efficiency (FECO ) of >80% could be maintained in a wide potential range from -2.0 to -2.4 V versus Ag/Ag+ , and the maximum current density could reach 68.0 mA cm-2 at -2.4 V versus Ag/Ag+ with a satisfied turnover frequency of 26 220 h-1 . The enhanced efficiency of electrocatalytic CO2 conversion of Cd-PCN-222HTs is closely related to its hollow structure, anchored Cd species, and good synergistic effect with electrolyte. The density functional theory calculations indicate that the dispersed Cd sites anchored in PCN-222HTs not only favor the formation of *COOH intermediate but also hinder the hydrogen evolution reaction, resulting in high activity of electrocatalytic CO2 -to-CO conversion.

Metal-organic frameworks functionalized biomaterials for promoting bone repair

Bone defects induced by bone trauma, tumors and osteoarthritis greatly affect the life quality and health of patients. The biomaterials with numerous advantages are becoming the most preferred options for repairing bone defects and treating orthopedic diseases. However, their repairing effects remains unsatisfactory, especially in bone defects suffering from tumor, inflammation, and/or bacterial infection. There are several strategies to functionalize biomaterials, but a more general and efficient method is essential for accomplishing the functionalization of biomaterials. Possessing high specific surface, high porosity, controlled degradability and variable composition, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) materials are inherently advantageous for functionalizing biomaterials, with tremendous improvements having been achieved. This review summarizes recent progresses in MOFs functionalized biomaterials for promoting bone repair and therapeutic effects. In specific, by utilizing various properties of diverse MOFs materials, integrated MOFs functionalized biomaterials achieve enhanced bone regeneration, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor functions. Finally, the summary and prospects of on the development of MOFs-functionalized biomaterials for promoting bone repair were discussed.
