Origin of long lifetime of band-edge charge carriers in organic-inorganic lead iodide perovskites

First-principles study of phase-dependent carrier transport mechanism for MASnI3Sn-based halide perovskite

Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites have attracted tremendous attentions owing to their excellent properties as next-generation photovoltaic devices. With soft covalent framework, organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites exhibit different phases at different temperatures. The band-edge features of perovskites are mainly contributed by inorganic framework, which means the structural differences between these phases would lead to complex carrier transport. We investigated the carrier transport of Sn-based organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite CH3NH3SnI3(MASnI3), considering acoustic deformation potential scattering, ionized impurity scattering, and polar optical phonon scattering. It is found that the electron mobility of each phase of MASnI3is strongly correlated with the Sn-I-Sn bond angle and there is in-plane/out-of-plane anisotropy. The projected crystal orbital Hamilton population analysis suggested that the tilt and rotation of the [SnI6]4-octahedron influence the Sn(p)-I(p) orbital electron coupling and the electron transport, leading to different band-edge features in multiple phases. The carrier mobility with respect to temperature was further calculated for each phase of MASnI3in respective temperature intervals, showing lower carrier mobility in high temperature. Comparing the contribution of different scattering mechanisms, it was found that the dominant scattering mechanism is polar optical phonon scattering, while multiple scattering mechanisms compete in individual cases.

Acceleration of radiative recombination for efficient perovskite LEDs

The increasing demands for more efficient and brighter thin-film light-emitting diodes (LEDs) in flat-panel display and solid-state lighting applications have promoted research into three-dimensional (3D) perovskites. These materials exhibit high charge mobilities and low quantum efficiency droop1-6, making them promising candidates for achieving efficient LEDs with enhanced brightness. To improve the efficiency of LEDs, it is crucial to minimize nonradiative recombination while promoting radiative recombination. Various passivation strategies have been used to reduce defect densities in 3D perovskite films, approaching levels close to those of single crystals3. However, the slow radiative (bimolecular) recombination has limited the photoluminescence quantum efficiencies (PLQEs) of 3D perovskites to less than 80% (refs. 1,3), resulting in external quantum efficiencies (EQEs) of LED devices of less than 25%. Here we present a dual-additive crystallization method that enables the formation of highly efficient 3D perovskites, achieving an exceptional PLQE of 96%. This approach promotes the formation of tetragonal FAPbI3 perovskite, known for its high exciton binding energy, which effectively accelerates the radiative recombination. As a result, we achieve perovskite LEDs with a record peak EQE of 32.0%, with the efficiency remaining greater than 30.0% even at a high current density of 100 mA cm-2. These findings provide valuable insights for advancing the development of high-efficiency and high-brightness perovskite LEDs.

Unprecedented Richness of Temperature- and Pressure-Induced Polymorphism in 1D Lead Iodide Perovskite

Inherent features of metal halide perovskites are their softness, complex lattice dynamics, and phase transitions spectacularly tuning their structures and properties. While the structural transformations are well described and classified in 3D perovskites, their 1D analogs are much less understood. Herein, both temperature- and pressure-dependent structural evolutions of a 1D AcaPbI3 perovskitoid incorporating acetamidinium (Aca) cation are examined. The study reveals the existence of nine phases of δ-AcaPbI3, which present the most diverse polymorphic collection among known perovskite materials. Interestingly, temperature- and pressure-triggered phase transitions in the 1D perovskotoid exhibit fundamentally different natures: the thermal transformations are mainly associated with the collective translations of rigid polyanionic units and ordering/disordering dynamics of Aca cations, while the compression primarily affects inorganic polymer chains. Moreover, in the 1-D chains featuring the face-sharing connection mode of the PbI6 octahedra the Pb···Pb distances are significantly shortened compared to the corner-sharing 3D perovskite frameworks, hence operating in the van der Waals territory. Strikingly, a good correlation is found between the Pb···Pb distances and the pressure evolution of the bandgap values in the δ-AcaPbI3, indicating that in 1D perovskitoid structures, the contacts between Pb2+ ions are one of the critical parameters determining their properties.

Coupled Dynamic Characteristics of Mobile Ions in Halide Perovskites

Mixed perovskites show immense promise for diverse applications owing to their exceptional compositional flexibility and outstanding optoelectronic performance. Nevertheless, a significant hurdle in their widespread use is their susceptibility to compositional instability. Some mixed perovskites exhibit a tendency to segregate into regions with varying halide content, negatively impacting the material's electronic properties and impeding its overall advancement. This study focuses on investigating the lattice and A-site cation dynamics in mixed-halide perovskites as well as the relationship between the stability and dynamic properties of mixed-halide perovskites. Our findings reveal an intrinsic link between the kinetics of organic molecules and halogen ion migration. The stability of halide ions is linearly positively correlated with the radius, number of H atoms, and moment of inertia of the organic molecules. Organic molecules with lower rotational kinetics effectively suppress the overall cationic kinetic activity, enhancing lattice dynamic stability in mixed perovskite systems. This inhibition further impedes the migration of halogen ions and hinders the halide segregation process. The presence of dominant I/MA vacancies in perovskites accelerates the rotation of MA and the migration of halogen ions. The coupled dynamic behavior of varying vacancy concentrations in A-site cations/X-site anions within the inorganic framework significantly impacts the photovoltaic performance of these halide perovskites.

Probing structural and dynamic properties of MAPbCl3 hybrid perovskite using Mn2+ EPR

Hybrid methylammonium (MA) lead halide perovskites have emerged as materials exhibiting excellent photovoltaic performance related to their rich structural and dynamic properties. Here, we use multifrequency (X-, Q-, and W-band) electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy of Mn2+ impurities in MAPbCl3 to probe the structural and dynamic properties of both the organic and inorganic sublattices of this compound. The temperature dependent continuous-wave (CW) EPR experiments reveal a sudden change of the Mn2+ spin Hamiltonian parameters at the phase transition to the ordered orthorhombic phase indicating its first-order character and significant slowing down of the MA cation reorientation. Pulsed EPR experiments are employed to measure the temperature dependences of the spin-lattice relaxation T1 and decoherence T2 times of the Mn2+ ions in the orthorhombic phase of MAPbCl3 revealing a coupling between the spin center and vibrations of the inorganic framework. Low-temperature electron spin echo envelope modulation (ESEEM) experiments of the protonated and deuterated MAPbCl3 analogues show the presence of quantum rotational tunneling of the ammonium groups, allowing to accurately probe their rotational energy landscape.

Research Progress on Rashba Effect in Two-Dimensional Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Lead Halide Perovskites

The Rashba effect appears in the semiconductors with an inversion-asymmetric structure and strong spin-orbit coupling, which splits the spin-degenerated band into two sub-bands with opposite spin states. The Rashba effect can not only be used to regulate carrier relaxations, thereby improving the performance of photoelectric devices, but also used to expand the applications of semiconductors in spintronics. In this mini-review, recent research progress on the Rashba effect of two-dimensional (2D) organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites is summarized. The origin and magnitude of Rashba spin splitting, layer-dependent Rashba band splitting of 2D perovskites, the Rashba effect in 2D perovskite quantum dots, a 2D/3D perovskite composite, and 2D-perovskites-based van der Waals heterostructures are discussed. Moreover, applications of the 2D Rashba effect in circularly polarized light detection are reviewed. Finally, future research to modulate the Rashba strength in 2D perovskites is prospected, which is conceived to promote the optoelectronic and spintronic applications of 2D perovskites.

Phase Transitions and Dynamics in Mixed Three- and Low-Dimensional Lead Halide Perovskites

Lead halide perovskites are extensively investigated as efficient solution-processable materials for photovoltaic applications. The greatest stability and performance of these compounds are achieved by mixing different ions at all three sites of the APbX3 structure. Despite the extensive use of mixed lead halide perovskites in photovoltaic devices, a detailed and systematic understanding of the mixing-induced effects on the structural and dynamic aspects of these materials is still lacking. The goal of this review is to summarize the current state of knowledge on mixing effects on the structural phase transitions, crystal symmetry, cation and lattice dynamics, and phase diagrams of three- and low-dimensional lead halide perovskites. This review analyzes different mixing recipes and ingredients providing a comprehensive picture of mixing effects and their relation to the attractive properties of these materials.

Atomic Structure and Dynamics of Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Perovskite Formamidinium Lead Iodide

The atomic dynamic behaviors of formamidinium lead iodide [HC(NH2)2PbI3] are critical for understanding and improving photovoltaic performances. However, they remain unclear. Here, we investigate the structural phase transitions and the reorientation dynamics of the formamidinium cation [HC(NH2)2+, FA+] of FAPbI3 using neutron scattering techniques. Two structural phase transitions occur with decreasing temperature, from cubic to tetragonal phase at 285 K and then to another tetragonal at 140 K, accompanied by gradually frozen reorientation of FA cations. The nearly isotropic reorientation in the cubic phase is suppressed to reorientation motions involving a two-fold (C2) rotation along the N···N axis and a four-fold (C4) rotation along the C-H axis in the tetragonal phase, and eventually to local disordered motion as a partial C4 along the C-H axis in another tetragonal phase, thereby indicating an intimate interplay between lattice and orientation degrees of freedom in the hybrid perovskite materials. The present complete atomic structure and dynamics provide a solid standing point to understand and then improve photovoltaic properties of organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites in the future.

Cs3Bi2Br9/g-C3N4 Direct Z-Scheme Heterojunction for Enhanced Photocatalytic Reduction of CO2 to CO

Lead-free halide perovskite derivative Cs3Bi2Br9 has recently been found to possess optoelectronic properties suitable for photocatalytic CO2 reduction reactions to CO. However, further work needs to be performed to boost charge separation for improving the overall efficiency of the photocatalyst. This report demonstrates the synthesis of a hybrid inorganic/organic heterojunction between Cs3Bi2Br9 and g-C3N4 at different ratios, achieved by growing Cs3Bi2Br9 crystals on the surface of g-C3N4 using a straightforward antisolvent crystallization method. The synthesized powders showed enhanced gas-phase photocatalytic CO2 reduction in the absence of hole scavengers of 14.22 (±1.24) μmol CO g-1 h-1 with 40 wt % Cs3Bi2Br9 compared with 1.89 (±0.72) and 5.58 (±0.14) μmol CO g-1 h-1 for pure g-C3N4 and Cs3Bi2Br9, respectively. Photoelectrochemical measurements also showed enhanced photocurrent in the 40 wt % Cs3Bi2Br9 composite, demonstrating enhanced charge separation. In addition, stability tests demonstrated structural stability upon the formation of a heterojunction, even after 15 h of illumination. Band structure alignment and selective metal deposition studies indicated the formation of a direct Z-scheme heterojunction between the two semiconductors, which boosted charge separation. These findings support the potential of hybrid organic/inorganic g-C3N4/Cs3Bi2Br9 Z-scheme photocatalyst for enhanced CO2 photocatalytic activity and improved stability.

Highly Stable and Efficient Formamidinium-Based 2D Ruddlesden-Popper Perovskite Solar Cells via Lattice Manipulation

Formamidinium (FA)-based 2D perovskites have emerged as highly promising candidates in solar cells. However, the insertion of 2D spacer cations into the perovskite lattice concomitantly introduces microstrain and unfavorable orientations that hinder efficiency and stability. In this study, by finely tuning the FA-based 2D perovskite lattice through spacer cation engineering, a stable lattice structure with balanced distortion, microstrain relaxation, and reduced carrier-lattice interactions is achieved. These advancements effectively stabilize the inherently soft lattice against light and thermal-aging stress. To reduce the photocurrent loss induced by undesired crystal texture, a polarity-matched molecular-type selenourea (SENA) additive is further employed to modulate the crystallization kinetics. The introduction of the SENA significantly inhibits the disordered crystallization induced by spacer cations and drives the templated growth of the quantum well structure with a vertical orientation. This controlled crystallization process effectively reduces crystal defects and enhances charge separation. Ultimately, the optimized FA-based perovskite photovoltaic devices achieve a remarkable power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 20.03% (certified steady-state efficiency of 19.30%), setting a new record for low-n 2D perovskite solar cells. Furthermore, the devices exhibit less than 1% efficiency degradation after operating at maximum power point for 1000 h and maintain excellent stability after thermal aging and cycles of cold-warm shock, respectively.

Thiocyanate-Stabilized Pseudo-cubic Perovskite CH(NH2)2PbI3 from Coincident Columnar Defect Lattices

α-FAPbI3 (FA+ = CH(NH2)2+) with a cubic perovskite structure is promising for photophysical applications. However, α-FAPbI3 is metastable at room temperature, and it transforms to the δ-phase at a certain period of time at room temperature. Herein, we report a thiocyanate-stabilized pseudo-cubic perovskite FAPbI3 with ordered columnar defects (α'-phase). This compound has a √5ap × √5ap × ap tetragonal unit cell (ap: cell parameter of primitive perovskite cell) with a band gap of 1.91 eV. It is stable at room temperature in a dry atmosphere. Furthermore, the presence of the α'-phase in a mixed sample with the δ-phase drastically reduces the δ-to-α transition temperature measured on heating, suggesting the reduction of the nucleation energy of the α-phase or thermodynamic stabilization of the α-phase through epitaxy. The defect-ordered pattern in the α'-phase forms a coincidence-site lattice at the twinned boundary of the single crystals, thus hinting at an epitaxy- or strain-based mechanism of α-phase formation and/or stabilization. In this study, we developed a new strategy to control defects in halide perovskites and provided new insight into the stabilization of α-FAPbI3 by pseudo-halide and grain boundary engineering.

Phase Transition Kinetics of MAPbI3 for Tetragonal-to-Orthorhombic Evolution

Despite the commonly observed phase-instability-induced photovoltaic degradation of MAPbI₃, the phase transition kinetics at the atomic level remains elusive. Herein, by developing a stepwise NEB method, we clarify a nonsynergistic minimum-energy pathway for the tetragonal-to-orthorhombic phase transition. It is kinetically driven by the tilting of PbI₆ ^4- that induces a spontaneous small rotation of adjoining MA⁺ and ends with stepwise ∼110° reorientations of two nonadjacent MA⁺ enabled by the cavity expansion. Compared to the common concerted mechanism, this process gives a low barrier of 0.08 eV/unit, demonstrating the easiness of the transition at extremely low temperatures and the importance of rotational entropies in regulating transition at elevated temperatures. With an explicit phase transition mechanism, we explore the structure-induced property response and reveal that introducing even low content of large-sized organic cations could help maintain the quasi-stable low-temperature performance of MAPbI₃ solar cells.

Modulating Optoelectronic and Elastic Properties of Anatase TiO2 for Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) has been investigated for solar-energy-driven photoelectrical water splitting due to its suitable band gap, abundance, cost savings, environmental friendliness, and chemical stability. However, its poor conductivity, weak light absorption, and large indirect bandgap (3.2 eV) has limited its application in water splitting. In this study, we precisely targeted these limitations using first-principle techniques. TiO2 only absorbs near-ultraviolet radiation; therefore, the substitution (2.1%) of Ag, Fe, and Co in TiO2 significantly altered its physical properties and shifted the bandgap from the ultraviolet to the visible region. Cobalt (Co) substitution in TiO2 resulted in high absorption and photoconductivity and a low bandgap energy suitable for the reduction in water without the need for external energy. The calculated elastic properties of Co-doped TiO2 indicate the ductile nature of the material with a strong average bond strength. Co-doped TiO2 exhibited fewer microcracks with a mechanically stable composition.

Rotational Dynamics of Organic Cations in Formamidinium Lead Iodide Perovskites

We report results from quasi-elastic neutron scattering studies on the rotational dynamics of formamidinium (HC[NH₂]₂⁺, FA) and methylammonium (CH₃NH₃⁺, MA) cations in FA_1-xMA_xPbI₃ with x = 0 and 0.4 and compare it to the dynamics in MAPbI₃. For FAPbI₃, the FA cation dynamics evolve from nearly isotropic rotations in the high-temperature (T > 285 K) cubic phase through reorientations between preferred orientations in the intermediate-temperature tetragonal phase (140 K < T ⩽ 285 K) to an even more complex dynamics, due to a disordered arrangement of the FA cations, in the low-temperature tetragonal phase (T ⩽ 140 K). For FA_0.6MA_0.4PbI₃, the dynamics of the respective organic cations evolve from a relatively similar behavior to FAPbI₃ and MAPbI₃ at room temperature to a different behavior in the lower-temperature phases where the MA cation dynamics are a factor of 50 faster as compared to those of MAPbI₃. This insight suggests that tuning the MA/FA cation ratio may be a promising approach to tailoring the dynamics and, in effect, optical properties of FA_1-xMA_xPbI₃.

In Situ and Operando Characterizations of Metal Halide Perovskite and Solar Cells: Insights from Lab-Sized Devices to Upscaling Processes

The performance and stability of metal halide perovskite solar cells strongly depend on precursor materials and deposition methods adopted during the perovskite layer preparation. There are often a number of different formation pathways available when preparing perovskite films. Since the precise pathway and intermediary mechanisms affect the resulting properties of the cells, in situ studies have been conducted to unravel the mechanisms involved in the formation and evolution of perovskite phases. These studies contributed to the development of procedures to improve the structural, morphological, and optoelectronic properties of the films and to move beyond spin-coating, with the use of scalable techniques. To explore the performance and degradation of devices, operando studies have been conducted on solar cells subjected to normal operating conditions, or stressed with humidity, high temperatures, and light radiation. This review presents an update of studies conducted in situ using a wide range of structural, imaging, and spectroscopic techniques, involving the formation/degradation of halide perovskites. Operando studies are also addressed, emphasizing the latest degradation results for perovskite solar cells. These works demonstrate the importance of in situ and operando studies to achieve the level of stability required for scale-up and consequent commercial deployment of these cells.

How cation nature controls the bandgap and bulk Rashba splitting of halide perovskites

Because of instability issues presented by metal halide perovskites based on methylammonium (MA), its replacement to Cs $$ \mathrm{Cs} $$ has emerged as an alternative to improve the materials' durability. However, the impact of this replacement on electronic properties, especially gap energy and bulk Rashba splitting remains unclear since electrostatic interactions from organic cations can play a crucial role. Through first-principles calculations, we investigated how organic/inorganic cations impact the electronic properties of MAPbI 3 $$ {\mathrm{MAPbI}}_3 $$ and CsPbI 3 $$ {\mathrm{CsPbI}}_3 $$ perovskites. Although at high temperatures the organic cation can assume spherical-like configurations due to its rotation into the cages, our results provide a complete electronic mechanism to show, from a chemical perspective based on ab initio calculations at 0 K $$ 0\ \mathrm{K} $$ , how the MA $$ \mathrm{MA} $$ dipoles suppression can reduce the MAPbI 3 $$ {\mathrm{MAPbI}}_3 $$ gap energy by promoting a degeneracy breaking in the electronic states from the PbI 3 $$ {\mathrm{PbI}}_3 $$ framework, while the dipole moment reinforcement is crucial to align theory ↔ $$ \leftrightarrow $$ experiment, increasing the bulk Rashba splitting through higher Pb $$ \mathrm{Pb} $$ off-centering motifs. The lack of permanent dipole moment in Cs $$ \mathrm{Cs} $$ results in CsPbI 3 $$ {\mathrm{CsPbI}}_3 $$ polymorphs with a pronounced Pb $$ \mathrm{Pb} $$ on-centering-like feature, which causes suppression in their respective bulk Rashba effect.

A Complete Picture of Cation Dynamics in Hybrid Perovskite Materials from Solid-State NMR Spectroscopy

The organic cations in hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites rotate rapidly inside the cuboctahedral cavities formed by the inorganic lattice, influencing optoelectronic properties. Here, we provide a complete quantitative picture of cation dynamics for formamidinium-based perovskites and mixed-cation compositions, which are the most widely used and promising absorber layers for perovskite solar cells today. We use ²H and ¹⁴N quadrupolar solid-state NMR relaxometry under magic-angle spinning to determine the activation energy (E_a) and correlation time (τ_c) at room temperature for rotation about each principal axis of a series of organic cations. Specifically, we investigate methylammonium (MA⁺), formamidinium (FA⁺), and guanidinium (GUA⁺) cations in current state-of-the-art single- and multi-cation perovskite compositions. We find that MA⁺, FA⁺, and GUA⁺ all have at least one component of rotation that occurs on the picosecond timescale at room temperature, with MA⁺ and GUA⁺ also exhibiting faster and slower components, respectively. The cation dynamics depend on the symmetry of the inorganic lattice but are found to be insensitive to the degree of cation substitution. In particular, the FA⁺ rotation is invariant across all compositions studied here, when sufficiently above the phase transition temperature. We further identify an unusual relaxation mechanism for the ²H of MA⁺ in mechanosynthesized FA_xMA_1-xPbI₃, which was found to result from physical diffusion to paramagnetic defects. This precise picture of cation dynamics will enable better understanding of the relationship between the organic cations and the optoelectronic properties of perovskites, guiding the design principles for more efficient perovskite solar cells in the future.

Crystalline Phases Regulate Electronic Trap States at Defective Surfaces of Lead Halide Perovskites

The role of organic cations in A-sites of lead halide perovskites (LHPs) on carrier dynamics has been debated in an effort to understand the remarkable properties in these materials. However, the change of A-site species in LHPs often leads to the variation of crystalline phases at room temperature. Herein, we combine density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT methods to study electron traps in CH₃NH₃PbI₃ which exhibits different structural phases with temperature and in APbBr₃ [A = CH₃NH₃, CH(NH₂)₂, or Cs] with their crystalline phases at room temperature. Regardless of halide species, electron traps arising from halide vacancies at surfaces are spatially localized in tetragonal phase and turn to be rather delocalized in orthorhombic and cubic phases. The reason is revealed by analyzing the projected p orbitals of Pb atoms at conduction band edges, providing a novel strategy of healing surface defects to improving the performances of the LHP solar cells.

One-step synthesis of epitaxial 3D/2D metal halide perovskite heterostructures

Facile and scalable synthesis of perovskite heterostructures with well-controlled heterointerfaces remains challenging. Herein, we developed a simple one-step solution method to prepare 3D/2D CsPbBr₃/PEA₂PbBr₄ perovskite heterostructures with a well-defined epitaxial structure in the gram scale. The formation mechanism was detailed by using in situ time-resolved photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy analysis. In addition, a series of 3D/2D epitaxial heterostructures were also prepared by changing the organic cations or halogen anions. Due to the effective charge separation and transfer, photodetectors based on the type-II 3D/2D CsPbBr₃/PEA₂PbBr₄ heterostructures showed up to 120 times higher photoresponsivities and 50 times higher on/off ratios compared to devices based on single component perovskites.

Mixology of MA1-x EA x PbI3 Hybrid Perovskites: Phase Transitions, Cation Dynamics, and Photoluminescence

Mixing molecular cations in hybrid lead halide perovskites is a highly effective approach to enhance the stability and performance of optoelectronic devices based on these compounds. In this work, we prepare and study novel mixed 3D methylammonium (MA)-ethylammonium (EA) MA1-x EA x PbI3 (x < 0.4) hybrid perovskites. We use a suite of different techniques to determine the structural phase diagram, cation dynamics, and photoluminescence properties of these compounds. Upon introduction of EA, we observe a gradual lowering of the phase-transition temperatures, indicating stabilization of the cubic phase. For mixing levels higher than 30%, we obtain a complete suppression of the low-temperature phase transition and formation of a new tetragonal phase with a different symmetry. We use broad-band dielectric spectroscopy to study the dielectric response of the mixed compounds in an extensive frequency range, which allows us to distinguish and characterize three distinct dipolar relaxation processes related to the molecular cation dynamics. We observe that mixing increases the rotation barrier of the MA cations and tunes the dielectric permittivity values. For the highest mixing levels, we observe the signatures of the dipolar glass phase formation. Our findings are supported by density functional theory calculations. Our photoluminescence measurements reveal a small change of the band gap upon mixing, indicating the suitability of these compounds for optoelectronic applications.

Liquid-Phase van der Waals Epitaxy of a Few-Layer and Unit-Cell Thick Ruddlesden-Popper Halide Perovskite

2D Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) halide perovskites with natural multiple quantum well structures are an ideal platform to integrate into vertical heterostructures, which may introduce plentiful intriguing optoelectronic properties that are not accessible in a single bulk crystal. Here, we report liquid-phase van der Waals epitaxy of a 2D RP hybrid perovskite (4,4-DFPD)₂PbI₄ (4,4-DFPD is 4,4-difluoropiperidinium) on muscovite mica and fabricate a series of perovskite-perovskite vertical heterostructures by integrating it with a second 2D RP perovskite R-NPB [NPB = 1-(1-naphthyl)ethylammonium lead bromide] sheets. The grown (4,4-DFPD)₂PbI₄ nanobelt array can be multiple layers to unit-cell thin and are crystallographically aligned on the mica substrate. An interlayer photo emission in this R-NPB/(4,4-DFPD)₂PbI₄ heterostructure with a lifetime of about 25 ns at 120 K has been revealed. Our demonstration of epitaxial (4,4-DFPD)₂PbI₄ array grown on mica via liquid-phase van der Waals epitaxy provides a paradigm to prepare orderly distributed 2D RP hybrid perovskites for further integration into multiple heterostructures. The discovery of a new interlayer emission in the R-NPB/(4,4-DFPD)₂PbI₄ heterostructure enriches the basic understanding of interlayer charge transition in halide perovskite systems.

Modulation of the carrier balance of lead-halide perovskite nanocrystals by polyelectrolyte hole transport layers for near-infrared light-emitting diodes

An alternative material, methylamine (MA)-doped poly[3-(4-carboxymethyl)thiophene-2,5-diyl] (P3CT) as hole transport layer (HTL) was investigated for efficient solution-processed near-infrared perovskite light-emitting diodes (NIR PeLEDs). The best NIR PeLEDs performance was achieved with an optimized composition ratio of the MA-doped P3CT (1:1) due to the balance of the electron and hole carrier in the active layer. The charge-balanced NIR PeLEDs exhibit the highest radiance of 858.37 W sr⁻¹ m⁻², a low turn-on voltage of 1.82 V, and an external quantum efficiency of 7.44%. Our findings show that using P3CT as an alternative HTL has the potential to significantly improve PeLED performance, allowing it to play a role in the development of practical applications in high-power NIR LEDs.

Compositional Variation in FAPb1-xSnxI3 and Its Impact on the Electronic Structure: A Combined Density Functional Theory and Experimental Study

Given their comparatively narrow band gap, mixed Pb-Sn iodide perovskites are interesting candidates for bottom cells in all-perovskite tandems or single junction solar cells, and their luminescence around 900 nm offers great potential for near-infrared optoelectronics. Here, we investigate mixed FAPb_1-xSn_xI₃ offering the first accurate determination of the crystal structure over a temperature range from 293 to 100 K. We demonstrate that all compositions exhibit a cubic structure at room temperature and undergo at least two transitions to lower symmetry tetragonal phases upon cooling. Using density functional theory (DFT) calculations based on these structures, we subsequently reveal that the main impact on the band gap bowing is the different energy of the s and p orbital levels derived from Pb and Sn. In addition, this energy mismatch results in strongly composition-dependent luminescence characteristics. Whereas neat and Sn-rich compounds exhibit bright and narrow emission with a clean band gap, Sn-poor compounds intrinsically suffer from increased carrier recombination mediated by in-gap states, as evidenced by the appearance of pronounced low-energy photoluminescence upon cooling. This study is the first to link experimentally determined structures of FAPb_1-xSn_xI₃ with the electronic properties, and we demonstrate that optoelectronic applications based on Pb-Sn iodide compounds should employ Sn-rich compositions.

Photoinduced large polaron transport and dynamics in organic-inorganic hybrid lead halide perovskite with terahertz probes

Organic-inorganic hybrid metal halide perovskites (MHPs) have attracted tremendous attention for optoelectronic applications. The long photocarrier lifetime and moderate carrier mobility have been proposed as results of the large polaron formation in MHPs. However, it is challenging to measure the effective mass and carrier scattering parameters of the photogenerated large polarons in the ultrafast carrier recombination dynamics. Here, we show, in a one-step spectroscopic method, that the optical-pump and terahertz-electromagnetic probe (OPTP) technique allows us to access the nature of interplay of photoexcited unbound charge carriers and optical phonons in polycrystalline CH₃NH₃PbI₃ (MAPbI₃) of about 10 μm grain size. Firstly, we demonstrate a direct spectral evidence of the large polarons in polycrystalline MAPbI₃. Using the Drude-Smith-Lorentz model along with the Frӧhlich-type electron-phonon (e-ph) coupling, we determine the effective mass and scattering parameters of photogenerated polaronic carriers. We discover that the resulting moderate polaronic carrier mobility is mainly influenced by the enhanced carrier scattering, rather than the polaron mass enhancement. While, the formation of large polarons in MAPbI₃ polycrystalline grains results in a long charge carrier lifetime at room temperature. Our results provide crucial information about the photo-physics of MAPbI₃ and are indispensable for optoelectronic device development with better performance.

Rethinking the A cation in halide perovskites

The A cation in ABX₃ organic-inorganic lead halide perovskites (OLHPs) was conventionally believed to hardly affect their optoelectronic properties. However, more recent developments have unraveled the critical role of the A cation in the regulation of the physicochemical and optoelectronic properties of OLHPs. We review the important breakthroughs enabled by the versatility of the A cation and highlight potential opportunities and unanswered questions related to the A cation in OLHPs.

Carrier recombination in CH3NH3PbI3: why is it a slow process?

In methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI₃), a slow recombination process of photogenerated carriers has often been considered to be the most intriguing property of the material resulting in high-efficiency perovskite solar cells. In spite of intense research over a decade or so, a complete understanding of carrier recombination dynamics in MAPbI₃has remained inconclusive. In this regard, several microscopic processes have been proposed so far in order to explain the slow recombination pathways (both radiative and non-radiative), such as the existence of shallow defects, a weak electron-phonon coupling, presence of ferroelectric domains, screening of band-edge charges through the formation of polarons, occurrence of the Rashba splitting in the band(s), and photon-recycling in the material. Based on the up-to-date findings, we have critically assessed each of these proposals/models to shed light on the origin of a slow recombination process in MAPbI₃. In this review, we have presented the interplay between the mechanisms and our views/perspectives in determining the likely processes, which may dictate the recombination dynamics in the material. We have also deliberated on their interdependences in decoupling contributions of different recombination processes.

Organic molecular dynamics and charge-carrier lifetime in lead iodide perovskite MAPbI3

The long charge carrier lifetime of the hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (HOIPs) is the key for their remarkable performance as a solar cell material. The microscopic mechanism for the long lifetime is still in debate. Here, by using a muon spin relaxation technique that probes the fluctuation of local magnetic fields, we show that the muon depolarization rate (Δ) of a prototype HOIP methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI₃) shows a sharp decrease with increasing temperature in two steps above 120 K and 190 K across the structural transition from orthorhombic to tetragonal structure at 162 K. Our analysis shows that the reduction of Δ is quantitatively in agreement with the expected behavior due to the rapid development of methyl ammonium (MA) jumping rotation around the C ₃ and C ₄ symmetry axes. Our results provide direct evidence for the intimate relation between the rotation of the electric dipoles of MA molecules and the charge carrier lifetime in HOIPs.

Spectroscopic Signatures of Hydrogen-Bonding Motifs in Protonic Ionic Liquid Systems: Insights from Diethylammonium Nitrate in the Solid State

Diethylammonium nitrate, [N0 0 2 2][NO3], and its perdeuterated analogue, [N D D 2 2] [NO3], were structurally characterized and studied by infrared, Raman, and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) spectroscopy. Using these experimental data along with state-of-the-art computational materials modeling, we report unambiguous spectroscopic signatures of hydrogen-bonding interactions between the two counterions. An exhaustive assignment of the spectral features observed with each technique has been provided, and a number of distinct modes related to NH···O dynamics have been identified. We put a particular emphasis on a detailed interpretation of the high-resolution, broadband INS experiments. In particular, the INS data highlight the importance of conformational degrees of freedom within the alkyl chains, a ubiquitous feature of ionic liquid (IL) systems. These findings also enable an in-depth physicochemical understanding of protonic IL systems, a first and necessary step to the tailoring of hydrogen-bonding networks in this important class of materials.

An Organic-Inorganic Perovskitoid with Zwitterion Cysteamine Linker and its Crystal-Crystal Transformation to Ruddlesden-Popper Phase

We demonstrate synthesis of a new low-D hybrid perovskitoid (a perovskite-like hybrid halide structure, yellow crystals, P21/n space group) using zwitterion cysteamine (2-aminoethanethiol) linker, and its remarkable molecular diffusion-controlled crystal-to-crystal transformation to Ruddlesden-Popper phase (Red crystals, Pnma space group). Our stable intermediate perovskitoid distinctly differs from all previous reports by way of a unique staggered arrangement of holes in the puckered 2D configuration with a face-sharing connection between the corrugated-1D double chains. The PL intensity for the yellow phase is 5 orders higher as compared to the red phase and the corresponding average lifetime is also fairly long (143 ns). First principles DFT calculations conform very well with the experimental band gap data. We demonstrate applicability of the new perovskitoid yellow phase as an excellent active layer in a self-powered photodetector and for selective detection of Ni²⁺ via On-Off-On photoluminescence (PL) based on its composite with few-layer black phosphorous.

Picosecond Charge Localization Dynamics in CH3NH3PbI3 Perovskite Probed by Infrared-Activated Vibrations

Hybrid metal halide perovskites exhibit well-defined semiconducting properties and efficient optoelectronic performance considering their soft crystal structure and low-energy lattice motions. The response of such a crystal lattice to light-induced charges is a fundamental question, for which experimental insight into ultrafast time scales is still sought. Here, we use infrared-activated vibrations (IRAV) of the organic components within the hybrid perovskite lattice as a sensitive probe for local structural reorganizations after photoexcitation, with femtosecond resolution. We find that the IRAV signal response shows a delayed rise of about 3 ps and subsequent decay of pronounced monomolecular character, distinguishing it from absorption associated with free carriers. We interpret our results as a two-step carrier localization process. Initially, carriers localize transiently in local energy minima formed by lattice fluctuations. A subpopulation of these can then fall into deeper trapped states over picoseconds, likely due to local reorganization of the organic molecules surrounding the carriers.

Cation Dynamics and Structural Stabilization in Formamidinium Lead Iodide Perovskites

The vibrational dynamics of pure and methylammonium-doped formamidinium lead iodide perovskites (FAPbI₃) has been investigated by high-resolution neutron spectroscopy. For the first time, we provide an exhaustive and accurate analysis of the cation vibrations and underlying local structure around the organic moiety in these materials using first-principles electronic-structure calculations validated by the neutron data. Inelastic neutron scattering experiments on FAPbI₃ provide direct evidence of the formation of a low-temperature orientational glass, unveiling the physicochemical origin of phase metastability in the tetragonal structure. Further analysis of these data provides a suitable starting point to explore and understand the stabilization of the perovskite framework via doping with small amounts of organic cations. In particular, we find that the hydrogen-bonding interactions around the formamidinium cations are strengthened as a result of cage deformation. This synergistic effect across perovskite cages is accompanied by a concomitant weakening of the methylammonium interactions with the surrounding framework.

Perovskite Light-Emitting Diodes with Near Unit Internal Quantum Efficiency at Low Temperatures

Room-temperature-high-efficiency light-emitting diodes based on metal halide perovskite FAPbI₃ are shown to be able to work perfectly at low temperatures. A peak external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 32.8%, corresponding to an internal quantum efficiency of 100%, is achieved at 45 K. Importantly, the devices show almost no degradation after working at a constant current density of 200 mA m^-2 for 330 h. The enhanced EQEs at low temperatures result from the increased photoluminescence quantum efficiencies of the perovskite, which is caused by the increased radiative recombination rate. Spectroscopic and calculation results suggest that the phase transitions of the FAPbI₃ play an important role for the enhancement of exciton binding energy, which increases the recombination rate.

Ultralow-Threshold Continuous-Wave Room-Temperature Crystal-Fiber/Nanoperovskite Hybrid Lasers for All-Optical Photonic Integration

Continuous-wave (CW) room-temperature (RT) laser operation with low energy consumption is an ultimate goal for electrically driven lasers. A monolithically integrated perovskite laser in a chip-level fiber scheme is ideal. However, because of the well-recognized air and thermal instabilities of perovskites, laser action in a perovskite has mostly been limited to either pulsed or cryogenic-temperature operations. Most CW laser operations at RT have had poor durability. Here, crystal fibers that have robust and high-heat-load nature are shown to be the key to enabling the first demonstration of ultralow-threshold CW RT laser action in a compact, monolithic, and inexpensive crystal fiber/nanoperovskite hybrid architecture that is directly pumped with a 405 nm diode laser. Purcell-enhanced light-matter coupling between the atomically smooth fiber microcavity and the perovskite nanocrystallites gain medium enables a high Q (≈1500) and a high β (0.31). This 762 nm laser outperforms previously reported structures with a record-low threshold of 132 nW and an optical-to-optical slope conversion efficiency of 2.93%, and it delivers a stable output for CW and RT operation. These results represent a significant advancement toward monolithic all-optical integration.

High-Quality All-Inorganic Perovskite CsPbBr3 Microsheet Crystals as Low-Loss Subwavelength Exciton-Polariton Waveguides

Nanostructured all-inorganic metal halide perovskites have attracted considerable attention due to their outstanding photonic and optoelectronic properties. Particularly, they can exhibit room-temperature exciton-polaritons (EPs) capable of confining electromagnetic fields down to the subwavelength scale, enabling efficient light harvesting and guiding. However, a real-space nanoimaging study of the EPs in perovskite crystals is still absent. Additionally, few studies focused on the ambient-pressure and reliable fabrication of large-area CsPbBr₃ microsheets. Here, CsPbBr₃ orthorhombic microsheet single crystals were successfully synthesized under ambient pressure. Their EPs were examined using a real-space nanoimaging technique, which reveal EP waveguide modes spanning the visible to near-infrared spectral region. The EPs exhibit a sufficient long propagation length of over 16 μm and a very low propagation loss of less than 0.072 dB·μm^-1. These results demonstrate the potential applications of CsPbBr₃ microsheets as subwavelength waveguides in integrated optics.

Dynamic structural property of organic-inorganic metal halide perovskite

Unique organic-inorganic hybrid semiconducting materials have made a remarkable breakthrough in new class of photovoltaics (PVs). Organic-inorganic metal (Pb and/or Sn) halides (-I, -Br, and -Cl) are the semiconducting absorber with the crystal structure of the famous "Perovskite". It is widely called "perovskite solar cells (PSCs)" in PV society. Now, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of PSCs is recorded in 25.5%. Prototypical composition of the absorbers is (A = methylammonium [MA], formamidinium [FA], and Cs), (M = Pb and/or Sn), and (X = I, Br, and Cl) in the form of perovskite AMX₃. Since the report on the stable all solid-state PSCs in 2012, the average annual growth rate of PCE is well over ∼10%. Such an outstanding PV performance attracts huge number of scientists in our research society. Their chemical as well as physical properties are dramatically different from monocrystalline Si, GaAs, other III-IV semiconductors, and many oxides with the crystal structure of perovskite. In this review, different fundamental aspects, in particular, the dynamic properties of A site cationic molecules and PbI₆ octahedrons linked with their corners, from other semiconducting and dielectric materials are reviewed and summarized. Upon discussing unique properties, perspectives on the promising PV applications based on the comprehension in dynamic nature of the orientation in A site molecule and PbI₆ octahedron tilting will be given.

Synergistic Effect of N,N-Dimethylformamide and Hydrochloric Acid on the Growth of MAPbI3 Perovskite Films for Solar Cells

Perovskite solar cells have emerged as a promising next-generation electrical power generating tool. However, imperfections in perovskite films are one of the crucial factors preventing the commercialization of perovskite solar cells. Passivation has proven to be an effective strategy to reduce the density of defect states in perovskite crystals and inhibit ion migration. Although significant work on chloride ion and N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) has shown that the additives are able to passivate different types of trap defects, systematic studies on the effects of DMF and HCl on perovskite crystallization when used in conjunction with each other are elusive. Here, we systematically investigated the synergistic effect of DMF and hydrochloric acid (HCl) on methylammonium (MA⁺)-based perovskite films with the two-step spin-coating method. As a Lewis base, DMF coordinates well with Pb²⁺ to facilitate a decrease in the number of defects, thereby improving the carrier separation and transport, while HCl improves the overall perovskite film morphology. Addition of 20 μL HCl/20 μL DMF to 10 mL of methylammonium iodide/isopropyl alcohol solution afforded ca. 500 nm thick perovskite films with no observable defects within the grains. The process allowed fabrication of devices with an active area of 0.16 cm², which produced power conversion efficiencies up to 18.37% with minimal hysteresis.

Bromine Incorporation and Suppressed Cation Rotation in Mixed-Halide Perovskites

Engineering the composition of perovskite active layers has been critical in increasing the efficiency of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) to more than 25% in the latest reports. Partial substitutions of the monovalent cation and the halogen have been adopted in the highest-performing devices, but the precise role of bromine incorporation remains incompletely explained. Here we use quasi-elastic neutron scattering (QENS) to study, as a function of the degree of bromine incorporation, the dynamics of organic cations in triple-cation lead mixed-halide perovskites. We find that the inclusion of bromine suppresses low-energy rotations of formamidinium (FA), and we find that inhibiting FA rotation correlates with a longer-lived carrier lifetime. When the fraction of bromine approaches 0.15 on the halogen site-a composition used extensively in the PSC literature-the fraction of actively rotating FA molecules is minimized: indeed, the fraction of rotating FA is suppressed by more than 25% compared to the bromine-free perovskite.

Edge Influence on Charge Carrier Localization and Lifetime in CH3NH3PbBr3 Perovskite: Ab Initio Quantum Dynamics Simulation

The distribution of charge carriers in metal halide perovskites draws strong interest from the solar cell community, with experiments demonstrating that edges of various microstructures can improve material performance. This is rather surprising because edges and grain boundaries are often viewed as the main source of charge traps. We demonstrate by ab initio quantum dynamics simulations that edges of the CH₃NH₃PbBr₃ perovskite create shallow trap states that mix well with the valence and conduction bands of the bulk and therefore support mobile charge carriers. Charges are steered to the edges energetically, facilitating dissociation of photo-generated excitons into free carriers. The edge-driven charge separation extends carrier lifetimes because of decreased overlap of the electron and hole wave functions, which leads to reduction of the nonadiabatic coupling responsible for nonradiative electron-hole recombination. Reduction of spatial symmetry near the edges activates additional vibrational modes that accelerate coherence loss within the electronic subsystem, further extending carrier lifetimes. Enhanced atomic motions at edges increase fluctuations of edge energy levels, enhancing mixing with band states and improving charge mobility. The simulations contribute to the atomistic understanding of the unusual properties of metal halide perovskites, generating the fundamental knowledge needed to design high-performance optoelectronic devices.

Intrinsic quantum confinement in formamidinium lead triiodide perovskite

Understanding the electronic energy landscape in metal halide perovskites is essential for further improvements in their promising performance in thin-film photovoltaics. Here, we uncover the presence of above-bandgap oscillatory features in the absorption spectra of formamidinium lead triiodide thin films. We attribute these discrete features to intrinsically occurring quantum confinement effects, for which the related energies change with temperature according to the inverse square of the intrinsic lattice parameter, and with peak index in a quadratic manner. By determining the threshold film thickness at which the amplitude of the peaks is appreciably decreased, and through ab initio simulations of the absorption features, we estimate the length scale of confinement to be 10-20 nm. Such absorption peaks present a new and intriguing quantum electronic phenomenon in a nominally bulk semiconductor, offering intrinsic nanoscale optoelectronic properties without necessitating cumbersome additional processing steps.

Photoinduced Vibrations Drive Ultrafast Structural Distortion in Lead Halide Perovskite

The success of organic–inorganic perovskites in optoelectronics is dictated by the complex interplay between various underlying microscopic phenomena. The structural dynamics of organic cations and the inorganic sublattice after photoexcitation are hypothesized to have a direct effect on the material properties, thereby affecting the overall device performance. Here, we use ultrafast heterodyne-detected two-dimensional (2D) electronic spectroscopy to reveal impulsively excited vibrational modes of methylammonium (MA) lead iodide perovskite, which drive the structural distortion after photoexcitation. Vibrational analysis of the measured data allows us to monitor the time-evolved librational motion of the MA cation along with the vibrational coherences of the inorganic sublattice. Wavelet analysis of the observed vibrational coherences reveals the coherent generation of the librational motion of the MA cation within ∼300 fs complemented with the coherent evolution of the inorganic skeletal motion. To rationalize this observation, we employed the configuration interaction singles (CIS), which support our experimental observations of the coherent generation of librational motions in the MA cation and highlight the importance of the anharmonic interaction between the MA cation and the inorganic sublattice. Moreover, our advanced theoretical calculations predict the transfer of the photoinduced vibrational coherence from the MA cation to the inorganic sublattice, leading to reorganization of the lattice to form a polaronic state with a long lifetime. Our study uncovers the interplay of the organic cation and inorganic sublattice during formation of the polaron, which may lead to novel design principles for the next generation of perovskite solar cell materials.

Direct Spectroscopic Observation of the Hole Polaron in Lead Halide Perovskites

The intrinsic photophysical origin of lead halide perovskites (LHPs) that are used successfully in optolectronic applications remains hotly debated. Here, by using ultrafast X-ray transient absorption spectroscopy, we successfully tracked the fate of photogenerated charge carriers at room temperature within the thin films of two classic LHPs, namely, MAPbBr₃ (MA = CH₃NH₃) and FAPbBr₃ [FA = CH(NH₂)₂]. We clearly observed in both thin films that the hole polaron is formed by localizing the photogenerated hole at the Br 4p orbital and concurrently distorting the local structure surrounding the Br atom after the photoexcitation. Furthermore, the larger FA cation in the cavity of the [PbBr₆]^4- octahedral framework induces a stronger hole polaron effect due to the hybridization of its p orbital into valence and conduction bands, correlating with the slower charge carrier recombination dynamics. Our direct experimental observation of the localized hole polaron in perovskites should advance the fundamental comprehension of charge carrier behavior within LHPs and their related devices.

Improved photoemission and stability of 2D organic-inorganic lead iodide perovskite films by polymer passivation

2D organic-inorganic lead iodide perovskites hold great promise for functional optoelectronic devices. However, their performances have been seriously limited by poor long-term stability in ambient environment. Here, we perform a systematic study for the stability improvement of a typical 2D organic-inorganic lead iodide perovskite (PEA)2PbI4. The degradation of the (PEA)2PbI4 films can be attributed to the interaction with the humidity in environment, which leads to decomposition of the perovskite components. Then, we demonstrate that polymer passivation provides an effective approach for improving the crystal quality and stability of the (PEA)2PbI4 films. Correspondingly, the photoemission of the polymer-passivated (PEA)2PbI4 films has been enhanced due to the decreased trap states. More importantly, a hydrophobic polymer (Poly(4-Vinylpyridine), PVP) will protect the (PEA)2PbI4 films from humidity in ambient environment, which can greatly improve the physical and chemical stability of the 2D perovskite films. As a result, the PVP-passivated (PEA)2PbI4 films can produce a bright emission even after long-term (>15 d) exposure to ambient environment (25 °C, 80% RH) and continuous UV illumination. This work provides a convenient and effective approach for improving the long-term stability of 2D organic-inorganic lead iodide perovskites, which shows great promise for fabricating large-area and versatile optoelectronic devices.

Water-Stable 1D Hybrid Tin(II) Iodide Emits Broad Light with 36% Photoluminescence Quantum Efficiency

The optical and light emission properties of tin and lead halide perovskites are remarkable because of the robust room-temperature (RT) performance, broad wavelength tunability, high efficiency, and good quenching resistance to defects. These highly desirable attributes promise to transform current light-emitting devices, phosphors, and lasers. One disadvantage in most of these materials is the sensitivity to moisture. Here, we report a new air-stable one-dimensional (1D) hybrid lead-free halide material (DAO)Sn₂I₆ (DAO, 1,8-octyldiammonium) that is resistant to water for more than 15 h. The material exhibits a sharp optical absorption edge at 2.70 eV and a strong broad orange light emission centered at 634 nm, with a full width at half-maximum (fwhm) of 142 nm (0.44 eV). The emission has a long photoluminescence (PL) lifetime of 582 ns, while the intensity is constant over a very broad temperature range (145-415 K) with a photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of at least 20.3% at RT. Above 415 K the material undergoes a structural phase transition from monoclinic (C2/c) to orthorhombic (Ibam) accompanied by a red shift in the band gap and a quench in the photoluminescence emission. Density functional theory calculations support the trend in the optical properties and the 1D electronic nature of the structure, where the calculated carrier effective masses along the inorganic chain are significantly lower than those perpendicular to the chain. Thin films of the compound readily fabricated from solutions exhibit the same optical properties, but with improved PLQY of 36%, for a 60 nm thick film, among the highest reported for lead-free low-dimensional 2D and 1D perovskites and metal halides.

Does Dipolar Motion of Organic Cations Affect Polaron Dynamics and Bimolecular Recombination in Halide Perovskites?

The role of dipolar motion of organic cations in the A-sites of halide perovskites has been debated in an effort to understand why these materials possess such remarkable properties. Here, we show that the dipolar motion of cations such as methylammonium (MA) or formamidinium (FA) versus cesium (Cs) does not influence large polaron binding energies, delocalization lengths, formation times, or bimolecular recombination lifetimes in lead bromide perovskites containing only one type of A-site cation. We directly probe the transient absorption spectra of large polarons throughout the entire mid-infrared and resolve their dynamics on time scales from sub-100 fs to sub-μs using time-resolved mid-infrared spectroscopy. Our findings suggest that the improved optoelectronic properties reported of halide perovskites with mixed A-site cations may result from synergy among the cations and how their mixture modulates the structure and dynamics of the inorganic lattice rather than from the dipolar properties of the cations themselves.

Composition-, Size-, and Surface Functionalization-Dependent Optical Properties of Lead Bromide Perovskite Nanocrystals

The photoluminescence (PL), color purity, and stability of lead halide perovskite nanocrystals depend critically on surface passivation. We present a study on the temperature-dependent PL and PL decay dynamics of lead bromide perovskite nanocrystals characterized by different types of A cations, surface ligands, and nanocrystal sizes. Throughout, we observe a single emission peak from cryogenic to ambient temperature. The PL decay dynamics are dominated by surface passivation, and a postsynthesis ligand exchange with a quaternary ammonium bromide (QAB) results in more stable passivation over a larger temperature range. The PL intensity is highest from 50 to 250 K, which indicates that ligand binding competes with the thermal energy at ambient temperature. Despite the favorable PL dynamics of nanocrystals passivated with QAB ligands (monoexponential PL decay over a large temperature range, increased PL intensity and stability), surface passivation still needs to be improved to achieve maximum emission intensity in nanocrystal films.

Properties of Excitons and Photogenerated Charge Carriers in Metal Halide Perovskites

Metal halide perovskites (MHPs) have recently attracted great attention from the scientific community due to their excellent photovoltaic performance as well as their tremendous potential for other optoelectronic applications such as light-emitting diodes, lasers, and photodetectors. Despite the rapid progress in device applications, a solid understanding of the photophysical properties behind the device performance is highly desirable for MHPs. Here, the properties of excitons and photogenerated charge carriers in MHPs are explored. The unique dielectric constant properties, crystal-liquid duality, and fundamental optical processes of MHPs are first discussed. The properties of excitons and related phenomena in MHPs are then detailed, including the exciton binding energy determined by various methods and their influence factors, exciton dynamics, exciton-photon coupling and related applications, and exciton-phonon coupling in MHPs. The properties of photogenerated free charge carriers in MHPs such as the carrier diffusion length, mobility, and recombination are described. Recent progress in various applications is also demonstrated. Finally, a conclusion and perspectives of future studies for MHPs are presented.
