Global impact of atmospheric arsenic on health risk: 2005 to 2015

Adverse Health Effects of the Long-Term Simultaneous Exposure to Arsenic and Particulate Matter in a Murine Model

PM2.5 and arsenic are two of the most hazardous substances for humans that coexist worldwide. Independently, they might cause multiple organ damage. However, the combined effect of PM2.5 and arsenic has not been studied. Here, we used an animal model of simultaneous exposure to arsenic and PM2.5. Adult Wistar rats were exposed to PM2.5, As, or PM2.5 + As and their corresponding control groups. After 7, 14, and 28 days of exposure, the animals were euthanized and serum, lungs, kidneys, and hearts were collected. Analysis performed showed high levels of lung inflammation in all experimental groups, with an additive effect in the coexposed group. Besides, we observed cartilaginous metaplasia in the hearts of all exposed animals. The levels of creatine kinase, CK-MB, and lactate dehydrogenase increased in experimental groups. Tissue alterations might be related to oxidative stress through increased GPx and NADPH oxidase activity. The findings of this study suggest that exposure to arsenic, PM2.5, or coexposure induces high levels of oxidative stress, which might be associated with lung inflammation and heart damage. These findings highlight the importance of reducing exposure to these pollutants to protect human health.

Enhancing AsH3 Detoxification via Electron-Deficient [NiIII-OH (μ-O)] in a Nickel-Modified NaY Zeolite: A Pathway toward As0 Products

The transformation of toxic arsine (AsH3) gas into valuable elemental arsenic (As0) from industrial exhaust gases is important for achieving sustainable development goals. Although advanced arsenic removal catalysts can improve the removal efficiency of AsH3, toxic arsenic oxides generated during this process have not received adequate attention. In light of this, a novel approach for obtaining stable As0 products was proposed by performing controlled moderate oxidation. We designed a tailored Ni-based catalyst through an acid etching approach to alter interactions between Ni and NaY. As a result, the 1Ni/NaY-H catalyst yielded an unprecedented proportion of As0 as the major product (65%), which is superior to those of other reported catalysts that only produced arsenic oxides. Density functional theory calculations clarified that Ni species changed the electronic structure of oxygen atoms, and the formed [NiIII-OH (μ-O)] active centers facilitated the adsorption of AsH2*, AsH*, and As* reaction intermediates for As-H bond cleavage, thereby decreasing the direct reactivity of oxygen with the arsenic intermediates. This work presents pioneering insights into inhibiting excessive oxidation during AsH3 removal, demonstrating potential environmental applications for recovery of As0 from toxic AsH3.

From genes to ecosystems: Decoding plant tolerance mechanisms to arsenic stress

Arsenic (As), a metalloid of considerable toxicity, has become increasingly bioavailable through anthropogenic activities, raising As contamination levels in groundwater and agricultural soils worldwide. This bioavailability has profound implications for plant biology and farming systems. As can detrimentally affect crop yield and pose risks of bioaccumulation and subsequent entry into the food chain. Upon exposure to As, plants initiate a multifaceted molecular response involving crucial signaling pathways, such as those mediated by calcium, mitogen-activated protein kinases, and various phytohormones (e.g., auxin, methyl jasmonate, cytokinin). These pathways, in turn, activate enzymes within the antioxidant system, which combat the reactive oxygen/nitrogen species (ROS and RNS) generated by As-induced stress. Plants exhibit a sophisticated genomic response to As, involving the upregulation of genes associated with uptake, chelation, and sequestration. Specific gene families, such as those coding for aquaglyceroporins and ABC transporters, are key in mediating As uptake and translocation within plant tissues. Moreover, we explore the gene regulatory networks that orchestrate the synthesis of phytochelatins and metallothioneins, which are crucial for As chelation and detoxification. Transcription factors, particularly those belonging to the MYB, NAC, and WRKY families, emerge as central regulators in activating As-responsive genes. On a post-translational level, we examine how ubiquitination pathways modulate the stability and function of proteins involved in As metabolism. By integrating omics findings, this review provides a comprehensive overview of the complex genomic landscape that defines plant responses to As. Knowledge gained from these genomic and epigenetic insights is pivotal for developing biotechnological strategies to enhance crop As tolerance.

Elemental Characterization of Ambient Particulate Matter for a Globally Distributed Monitoring Network: Methodology and Implications

Global ground-level measurements of elements in ambient particulate matter (PM) can provide valuable information to understand the distribution of dust and trace elements, assess health impacts, and investigate emission sources. We use X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy to characterize the elemental composition of PM samples collected from 27 globally distributed sites in the Surface PARTiculate mAtter Network (SPARTAN) over 2019-2023. Consistent protocols are applied to collect all samples and analyze them at one central laboratory, which facilitates comparison across different sites. Multiple quality assurance measures are performed, including applying reference materials that resemble typical PM samples, acceptance testing, and routine quality control. Method detection limits and uncertainties are estimated. Concentrations of dust and trace element oxides (TEO) are determined from the elemental dataset. In addition to sites in arid regions, a moderately high mean dust concentration (6 μg/m3) in PM2.5 is also found in Dhaka (Bangladesh) along with a high average TEO level (6 μg/m3). High carcinogenic risk (>1 cancer case per 100000 adults) from airborne arsenic is observed in Dhaka (Bangladesh), Kanpur (India), and Hanoi (Vietnam). Industries of informal lead-acid battery and e-waste recycling as well as coal-fired brick kilns likely contribute to the elevated trace element concentrations found in Dhaka.

Air, land, and water pollutants and public health expenditures: Empirical data from selected EU countries in the transport sector

The increase in economic activity, particularly in transport, leads to a significant increase in emissions of pollutants, such as ammonia, arsenic and cadmium, at the European Union (EU) level. This can seriously impact human health and, consequently, public health spending. Based on data from 15 European Union countries from 1992 to 2020, a panel co-integration approach is used to study these pollutants' short- and long-term co-movements and per capita health expenditure. The results show a long-term relationship between ammonia, arsenic and cadmium emissions and per capita health spending, as they are panel-cointegrated. Ammonia and cadmium emissions exert a statistically significant positive effect on health expenditure in the short run, and arsenic emissions have a statistically significant positive impact in the long run. The forecast assessment of reductions in health spending resulting from policies to reduce emissions of air, land and water pollutants, such as ammonia, arsenic and cadmium, from the transport sector supports investments in its policies that reduce pressure on health spending. The reduction in annual healthcare expenditure is greater when these reductions are made sooner and more severely. Indeed, varying the reduction in emissions for each pollutant by 10% and 100%, respectively, from the first year for all countries over a 3-year period results in an average annual reduction in health spending of 2.05% and 51.02%, respectively. However, if we wait until the third year, the annual reduction is only 0.77% and 17.63% respectively.

Sources appointment and health risks of PM2.5-bound trace elements in a coastal city of southeastern China

To gain a comprehensive understanding of sources and health risks of trace elements in an area of China with high population densities and low PM2.5 concentrations, 15 trace elements (Al, K, Ca, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Sn, Ba, Pb) in PM2.5 were monitored from December 2020 to November 2021 in a representative city, Xiamen. The concentrations of trace elements in Xiamen displayed an obvious seasonal variation and were dominated by K, Fe, Al, Ca and Zn. Based on Positive Matrix Factorization analysis, source appointment revealed that the major sources of trace elements in Xiamen were traffic, dust, biomass and firework combustion, industrial manufacture and shipping emission. According to health risk assessment combined with the source appointment results, it indicated that the average noncarcinogenic risk was below the threshold and cancer risk of four hazardous metals (Cr, Ni, As, Pb) exceeded the threshold (10-6). Traffic-related source had almost half amount of contribution to the health risk induced by PM2.5-bound trace elements. During the dust transport period or Spring Festival period, the health risks exceeded an acceptable threshold even an order of magnitude higher, suggesting that the serious health risks still existed in low PM2.5 environment at certain times. Health risk assessment reminded that the health risk reduction in PM2.5 at southeastern China should prioritize traffic-related hazardous trace elements and highlighted the importance of controlling vehicles emissions in the future.

Research progress on arsenic, arsenic-containing medicinal materials, and arsenic-containing preparations: clinical application, pharmacological effects, and toxicity

Introduction: The toxicity of arsenic is widely recognized globally, mainly harming human health by polluting water, soil, and food. However, its formulations can also be used for the clinical treatment of diseases such as leukemia and tumors. Arsenic has been used as a drug in China for over 2,400 years, with examples such as the arsenic-containing drug realgar mentioned in Shennong's Herbal Classic. We have reviewed references on arsenic over the past thirty years and found that research has mainly focused on clinical, pharmacological, and toxicological aspects. Results and Discussion: The finding showed that in clinical practice, arsenic trioxide is mainly used in combination with all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) at a dose of 10 mg/d for the treatment of acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL); realgar can be used to treat acute promyelocytic leukemia, myelodysplastic syndrome, and lymphoma. In terms of pharmacology, arsenic mainly exerts anti-tumor effects. The dosage range of the action is 0.01-80 μmol/L, and the concentration of arsenic in most studies does not exceed 20 μmol/L. The pharmacological effects of realgar include antiviral activity, inhibition of overactivated lactate dehydrogenase, and resistance to malaria parasites. In terms of toxicity, arsenic is toxic to multiple systems in a dose-dependent manner. For example, 5 μmol/L sodium arsenite can induce liver oxidative damage and promote the expression of pro-inflammatory factors, and 15 μmol/L sodium arsenite induces myocardial injury; when the concentration is higher, it is more likely to cause toxic damage.

Underestimated activity-based microplastic intake under scenario-specific exposures

Despite increasing alarms over the health impacts of microplastics (MPs) due to their detection in human organs and feces, precise exposure evaluations remain scarce. To comprehend their risks, there is a distinct need to prioritize quantitive estimates in MP exposome, particularly at the environmentally-realistic level. Here we used a method rooted in real-world MP measurements and activity patterns to determine the daily intake of MPs through inhalation and from ground dust/soil ingestion. We found that nearly 80% of this intake comes from residential sectors, with activity intensity and behavioral types significantly affecting the human MP burden. The data showed a peak in MP exposure for those aged 18-64. When compared to dietary MP intake sources like seafood, salt, and water, we identified a previously underestimated exposure from inhalation and dust/soil ingestion, emphasizing the need for more realistic evaluations that incorporate activity factors. This discovery raises questions about the accuracy of past studies and underscores MP's potential health risks. Moreover, our time-based simulations revealed increased MP intake during the COVID-19 lockdown due to more surface dust ingestion, shedding light on how global health crises may inadvertently elevate MP exposure risks.

LCP1-mediated cytoskeleton alterations involve in arsenite-triggered malignant phenotype of human immortalized prostate stromal cells

The connection between continuous arsenic exposure and prostate cancer is already established. However, the exact mechanisms of arsenic tumorigenesis are far from clear. Here, we employed human prostate stromal immortalized cells (WPMY-1) continuous exposure to 1 and 2 μM arsenite for 29 weeks to identify the malignant phenotype and explore the underlying molecular mechanism. As expected, continuous low-dose arsenite exposure led to the malignant phenotype of WPMY-1 cells. Quantitative proteomics identified 517 differentially expressed proteins (DEPs), of which the most remarkably changed proteins (such as LCP1 and DDX58, etc.) and the bioinformatic analysis were focused on the regulation of cytoskeleton, cell adhesion, and migration. Further, cell experiments showed that continuous arsenite exposure altered cytoskeleton structure, enhanced cell adhesive capability, and raised the levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), ATM, p-ATM, p-ERK1/2, and LCP1 proteins. N-acetylcysteine (NAC) treatment antagonized the increase of LCP1 proteins, and LCP1 knockdown partially restored F-actin organization caused by arsenic. Overall, the results demonstrated that ROS-ATM-ERK1/2 signaling pathway was involved in the activation of LCP1, leading to cytoskeleton alterations. These alterations are believed to play a significant role in arsenite-triggered tumor microenvironment cell-acquired malignant phenotype, which could provide potential biomarkers with therapeutic implications for prostate cancer.

Chronic arsenic exposure-provoked biotoxicity involved in liver-microbiota-gut axis disruption in chickens based on multi-omics technologies

INTRODUCTION

Arsenic has been ranked as the most hazardous substance by the U.S. Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry. Environmental arsenic exposure-evoked health risks have become a vital public health concern worldwide owing to the widespread existence of arsenic. Multi-omics is a revolutionary technique to data analysis providing an integrated view of bioinformation for comprehensively and systematically understanding the elaborate mechanism of diseases.

OBJECTIVES

This study aimed at uncovering the potential contribution of liver-microbiota-gut axis in chronic inorganic arsenic exposure-triggered biotoxicity in chickens based on multi-omics technologies.

METHODS

Forty Hy-Line W-80 laying hens were chronically exposed to sodium arsenite with a dose-dependent manner (administered with drinking water containing 10, 20, or 30 mg/L arsenic, respectively) for 42 d, followed by transcriptomics, serum non-targeted metabolome, and 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequencing accordingly.

RESULTS

Arsenic intervention induced a serious of chicken liver dysfunction, especially severe liver fibrosis, simultaneously altered ileal microbiota populations, impaired chicken intestinal barrier, further drove enterogenous lipopolysaccharides translocation via portal vein circulation aggravating liver damage. Furtherly, the injured liver disturbed bile acids (BAs) homoeostasis through strongly up-regulating the BAs synthesis key rate-limiting enzyme CYP7A1, inducing excessive serum total BAs accumulation, accompanied by the massive synthesis of primary BA-chenodeoxycholic acid. Moreover, the concentrations of secondary BAs-ursodeoxycholic acid and lithocholic acid were markedly repressed, which might involve in the repressed dehydroxylation of Ruminococcaceae and Lachnospiraceae families. Abnormal BAs metabolism in turn promoted intestinal injury, ultimately perpetuating pernicious circle in chickens. Notably, obvious depletion in the abundance of four profitable microbiota, Christensenellaceae, Ruminococcaceae, Muribaculaceae, and Faecalibacterium, were correlated tightly with this hepato-intestinal circulation process in chickens exposed to arsenic.

CONCLUSION

Our study demonstrates that chronic inorganic arsenic exposure evokes liver-microbiota-gut axis disruption in chickens and establishes a scientific basis for evaluating health risk induced by environmental pollutant arsenic.

Capture gaseous arsenic in flue gas by amorphous iron manganese oxides with high SO2 resistance

In non-ferrous metal smelting, the problem of gaseous arsenic in high-sulfur flue gas is difficult to solve. Now we have developed oxygen-enriched amorphous iron manganese oxide (AFMBO) based on the unique superiority of iron-manganese oxide for arsenic capture to realize the effective control of gaseous arsenic in the non-ferrous smelting flue gas. The experimental results show that the arsenic adsorption capacity of AFMBO is up to 102.7 mg/g, which has surpassed most of the current adsorbents. In particular, AFMBO can effectively capture gaseous arsenic even at 12% v/v SO2 concentrations (88.45 mg/g). Moreover, the spent AFMBO possesses pronounced magnetic characteristics that make it easier to separate from dust, which is conducive to reducing the secondary environmental risk of arsenic. In terms of mechanism study, various characterization methods are used to explain the important role of lattice oxygen and adsorbed oxygen in the capture process of gaseous arsenic. Moreover, the reason for the efficient arsenic removal performance of AFMBO is also reasonably explained at the microscopic level. This study provides ideas and implications for gaseous arsenic pollution control research.

Anthropogenic As pollution mediated by submarine groundwater discharge in a marine ranch

Arsenic (As) pollution, is a global problem, threatening human health and ecological security, especially in the bay environment with dense population and human activities. Among potential pathways of As into the bay, submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) has not received adequate attention due to its invisibility. We determined As and 222Rn activity concentrations in different water mass. Spatial variation of dissolved As concentration in the groundwater was large and attributed to the adjacent local industries. By combining 222Rn mass balance modeling with As concentrations measured, the SGD-derived As fluxes was conservatively estimated to be 1310 kg As d-1 and 5880 kg As d-1 in the dry and wet seasons, respectively. The migration of arsenic may be enhanced by rainfall and dissolved carbon. The amount of SGD derived As input to the bay was greater than the total combined As input from river discharge, atmosphere, sewage drainage, and diffusion from sediment.

Geochemical control, water quality indexing, source distribution, and potential health risk of fluoride and arsenic in groundwater: Occurrence, sources apportionment, and positive matrix factorization model

Fluoride (F-), and arsenic (As) in the groundwater cause health problems in developing countries, including Pakistan. We evaluated the occurrence, distribution, sources apportionment, and health hazards of F-, and As in the groundwater of Mardan, Pakistan. Therefore, groundwater samples (n = 130) were collected and then analyzed for F-, and As by ion-chromatography (IC) and Inductively-coupled plasma mass-spectrometry (ICP-MS). The F-, and As concentrations in groundwater were 0.7-14.4 mg/L and 0.5-11.2 µg/L. Relatively elevated F-, and As coexists with higher pH, Na+, HCO3-, SO4-2, and depleted Ca+2 due to fluoride, sulfide-bearing minerals, and anthropogenic inputs. Both F-, and/or As are transported in subsurface water through adsorption and desorption processes. Groundwater samples 45%, and 14.2% exceeded the WHO guidelines of 1.5 mg/L and 10 µg/L. Water quality indexing (WQI-model) declared that 35.7% samples are unfit for household purposes. Saturation and undersaturation of minerals showed precipitation and mineral dissolution. Groundwater contamination by PCA-MLR and PMF-model interpreted five factors. The fitting results and R2 values of PMF (0.52-0.99)>PCA-MLR (0.50-0.95) showed high accuracy of PMF-model. Human health risk assessment (HHRA-model) revealed high non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risk for children than adults. The percentile recovery of F- and As was recorded 98%, and 95% with reproducibility ± 5% error.

Vitellaria paradoxa Inhibits Arsenic-induced Toxicity in Drosophila melanogaster Via the Augmentation of Antioxidant System

The Ethyl Acetate Fraction (EACF) of Ethanol Leaf Extract of Vitellaria paradoxa (ELVp) was assessed against Sodium Arsenite (SA)-induced toxicity in Drosophila melanogaster. The Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis of EACF was carried out. The molecular docking of the compounds obtained from GC-MS was performed against D. melanogaster glutathione-S-transferase-2 (GST-2). Firstly, D. melanogaster (Harwich strain) was treated with EACF to determine its effect on longevity. Secondly, D. melanogaster was fed with EACF (1.0 and 3.0 mg/5 g diet) and/or SA (0.0625 mM) for 5 days. Thereafter, the ameliorative role of EACF in SA-induced toxicity was evaluated using the fly's emergence rate, locomotor activity, oxidative stress and antioxidant biomarkers. The in-silico study revealed varying degrees of binding affinity of the twelve active compounds of EACF against GST-2 which was comparable with the co-crystalized ligand (glutathione). The EACF increased the longevity of D. melanogaster by 20.0% compared with control and ameliorated SA-induced reduction of emergence rate and locomotor performance by 178.2 and 20.5%, respectively. Additionally, EACF ameliorated SA-induced reduction of total thiol and non-protein thiols and inhibition of catalase and GST activities (p < 0.05). These results corroborated with histological data obtained in the fat body of D. melanogaster. Overall, EACF augmented the antioxidant system of D. melanogaster and prevented sodium arsenite-induced oxidative stress due to its high antioxidant property.

Groundwater quality, heavy metal pollution, and health risk assessment using geospatial techniques and index methods in Eber wetland and surroundings (Afyonkarahisar/Turkey)

The continuous increase in the demand for water and the scarcity of water to be used as drinking water have made groundwater even more important. The study area, Eber wetland, is located in the Akarçay river basin, which is one of the most important river basins in Turkey. The groundwater quality and heavy metal pollution were investigated in the study using index methods. In addition, health risk assessments were performed. Ion enrichment was determined at locations E10, E11, and E21 related to water-rock interaction. In addition, nitrate pollution was observed in many samples due to agricultural activities and also fertilizer application in the areas. The water quality index (WOI) values of the groundwaters vary between 85.91 and 201.77. In general, groundwater samples located around the wetland were in the "poor water" class. According to the values for the heavy metal pollution index (HPI), all the groundwater samples are suitable for use as drinking water. They are also classified as "low pollution" according to the heavy metal evaluation index (HEI) and the value/degree of contamination (Cd). In addition, since the water is been used for drinking by the people in the area, a health risk assessment was performed to ascertain As and NO₃. It was determined that the R_cancer values calculated for As were considerably higher than the tolerable/acceptable values for both adults and children. The results obtained clearly show that the groundwater should not be used as drinking water.

Calcium and L-glutamate present the opposite role in managing arsenic in barley

Arsenic contamination in agricultural soils has posed tremendous threat to sustainable crop production and human health via food chain. Calcium and Glutamate have been well-documented in metal(loid)s detoxification, but it is poorly understood how they regulate arsenic-induced toxicity to plants. In this study, the effect of glutamate and calcium at high concentration on arsenic toxicity and accumulation in barley seedling was accessed in terms of plant growth, photosynthetic efficacy, arsenic uptake, translocation and accumulation, antioxidant defense, nutrient uptake and the expression of As transporters. Our results have demonstrated that calcium could effectively ameliorate arsenic toxicity to barley seedlings, which is mainly attributed to its beneficial effect on increasing nutrient uptake, reducing the aboveground arsenic accumulation and enhancing antioxidative defense capacity. However, it is unexpected that glutamate considerably exacerbated the arsenic toxicity to barley seedlings. More importantly, for the first time, glutamate was observed to tremendously facilitate the root-to-shoot translocation of arsenic by 41.8- to 60.8-fold, leading to 90% of the total amount of As accumulating in barley shoots. The reason of this phenomenon can be well explained by the glutamate-triggered enormous upregulation of genes involved in arsenic uptake (HvPHT1;1, HvPHR2 and HvNIP3;2), reduction (HvHAC1;1), translocation (HvABCC7, HvNIP1;1 and HvNIP3;3) and intracellular sequestration (HvABCC1). These findings suggest that calcium and glutamate function as the opposite player in managing arsenic, with calcium being an effective alleviator of arsenic stress to ensure the safe production of crops; while glutamate being a highly efficient phytoextraction agent for phytoremediation of arsenate-contaminated soils.

Speciation and source changes of atmospheric arsenic in Qingdao from 2016 to 2020 - Response to control policies in China

Arsenic (As) is a toxic pollutant in the atmosphere. The atmospheric As concentration is high over the East Asian continent. At present, there is less research on the long-term trend of atmospheric arsenic pollution, which is not conducive to understanding its behavior. Total suspended particulate matter (TSP) samples were collected in Qingdao in autumn and winter from 2016 to 2020 to analyze total arsenic (TAs), As(V) and As(III). The interannual variation patterns, influencing factors and health risks of arsenic concentrations in aerosols were discussed. The results showed that As(V) is the dominant species of arsenic in aerosols. The average concentration of TAs gradually decreased and the proportion of As(III) increased during autumn and winter from 2016 to 2020. The levels of TAs, As(V) and As(III) in aerosols increased during the heating period and on polluted days. Negative correlation between TAs/TSP and TSP indicated that higher concentrations of TSP in the atmosphere would reduce the content of TAs in particulate matter. The increase of secondary aerosol particles played a dilution effect. Mobile source emissions, biomass and coal combustion were main sources of atmospheric arsenic. The distribution range of large potential sources of atmospheric arsenic decreased from 2016 to 2020, and concentrated, mainly in parts of Shandong province and its offshore areas. Local sources contributed the most to atmospheric arsenic pollution in Qingdao in autumn and winter. TAs, As(V) and As(III) posed a low non-carcinogenic risk and a negligible carcinogenic risk to adults and children. This study reveals the influence of strict air pollution control policies on the speciation and source of arsenic in aerosols.

Present Knowledge and Future Perspectives of Atmospheric Emission Inventories of Toxic Trace Elements: A Critical Review

Toxic trace elements (TEs) can pose serious risks to ecosystems and human health. However, a comprehensive understanding of atmospheric emission inventories for several concerning TEs has not yet been developed. In this study, we systematically reviewed the status and progress of existing research in developing atmospheric emission inventories of TEs focusing on global, regional, and sectoral scales. Multiple studies have strengthened our understanding of the global emission of TEs, despite attention being mainly focused on Hg and source classification in different studies showing large discrepancies. In contrast to those of developed countries and regions, the officially published emission inventory is still lacking in developing countries, despite the fact that studies on evaluating the emissions of TEs on a national scale or one specific source category have been numerous in recent years. Additionally, emissions of TEs emitted from waste incineration and traffic-related sources have produced growing concern with worldwide rapid urbanization. Although several studies attempt to estimate the emissions of TEs based on PM emissions and its source-specific chemical profiles, the emission factor approach is still the universal method. We call for more extensive and in-depth studies to establish a precise localization national emission inventory of TEs based on adequate field measurements and comprehensive investigation to reduce uncertainty.

Acute arsenic exposure exacerbates lipopolysaccharide-induced lung injury possibly by compromising the integrity of the lung epithelial barrier in rats

Inhalation of large amounts of arsenic can damage the respiratory tract and may exacerbate the development of bacterial pneumonia, but the exact mechanism remains unclear. In this study, male Wistar rats were randomly divided into control, arsenic trioxide (16.0 μg/kg ATO), lipopolysaccharide (0.5 mg/kg LPS), and ATO combined with LPS (16.0 μg/kg ATO + 0.5 mg/kg LPS) groups. Blood and lung tissue samples were collected from each group 12 h after exposure. The results showed that exposure to ATO or LPS alone produced different effects on leukocytes and inflammatory factors, while combined exposure significantly increased serum interleukin-6, interleukin-10, lung water content, lung lavage fluid protein, and p38 protein phosphorylation levels. Alveolar interstitial thickening, alveolar membrane edema, alveolar type I and II cell matrix vacuolization, and nuclear pyknosis were observed in rats exposed to either ATO or LPS. More severe ultrastructural changes were found in the combined exposure group, and chromatin splitting was observed in alveolar type I cells. Lanthanum nitrate particles leaked from the alveolar vascular lumen in the ATO-exposed group, whereas in the combined exposure group, Evans Blue levels were increased and lanthanum nitrate particles were present in the lung parenchyma. Claudin-3 protein expression increased and claudin-4 expression decreased after ATO or LPS exposure, while claudin-18 expression was unchanged. The changes in claudin-3 and claudin-4 protein expression were further exacerbated by combined exposure. In conclusion, these results suggest that inhalation of ATO may exacerbate the development of bacterial pneumonia and that common mechanisms may exist to synergistically disrupt epithelial barrier integrity.

Significant Biotransformation of Arsenobetaine into Inorganic Arsenic in Mice

Arsenic (As) is extremely toxic to living organisms at high concentrations. Arsenobetaine (AsB), confirmed to be a non-toxic form, is the main contributor to As in the muscle tissue of marine fish. However, few studies have investigated the biotransformation and biodegradation of AsB in mammals. In the current study, C57BL/6J mice were fed four different diets, namely, Yangjiang and Zhanjiang fish diets spiked with marine fish muscle containing AsB, and arsenite (As(III)) and arsenate (As(V)) diets spiked with As(III) and As(V), respectively, to investigate the biotransformation and bioaccumulation of AsB in mouse tissues for 42 d. Different diets exhibited different As species distributions, which contributed to varying levels of As bioaccumulation in different tissues. The intestines accumulated the highest level of As, regardless of form, which played a major part in As absorption and distribution in mice. We observed a significant biotransformation of AsB to As(V) following its diet exposure, and the liver, lungs, and spleen of AsB-treated mice showed higher As accumulation levels than those of As(III)- or As(V)-treated mice. Inorganic As showed relatively high accumulation levels in the lungs and spleen after long-term exposure to AsB. Overall, these findings provided strong evidence that AsB undergoes biotransformation to As(V) in mammals, indicating the potential health risk associated with long-term AsB intake in mammals.

Breast Cancer and Arsenic Anticancer Effects: Systematic Review of the Experimental Data from In Vitro Studies

Arsenic is a known environmental carcinogenic agent. However, under certain circumstances, it may exert anticancer effects. In this systematic review, we aim to provide information on recent developments in studies on arsenic antitumor effects in breast cancer. Research included in the review refers to experimental data from in vitro studies. The data was collected using search terms "breast cancer," "arsenic," and "anticancer" (25.05.2021). Only studies in English and published in the last 10 years were included. The search identified 123 studies from the EBSCOhost, PubMed, and Scopus databases. In the selection process, thirty full-texts were evaluated as eligible for the review. The literature of the last decade provides a lot of information on mechanisms behind anticancer effects of arsenic on breast cancer. Similar to arsenic-induced carcinogenesis, these mechanisms include the activation of the redox system and the increased production of free radicals. Targets of arsenic action are systems of cell membranes, mitochondria, pathways of intracellular transmission, and the genetic apparatus of the cell. Beneficial effects of arsenic use are possible due to significant metabolic differences between cancer and healthy cells. Further efforts are needed in order to establish modes and doses of treatment with arsenic that would provide anticancer activity with minimal toxicity.

Different components of air pollutants and neurological disorders

The harmful effects of air pollution can cause various diseases. Most research on the hazards of air pollution focuses on lung and cardiovascular diseases. In contrast, the impact of air pollution on neurological disorders is not widely recognized. Air pollution can cause various neurological conditions and diseases, such as neural inflammation, neurodegeneration, and cerebrovascular barrier disorder; however, the mechanisms underlying the neurological diseases induced by various components of air pollutants remain unclear. The present paper summarizes the effects of different components of air pollutants, including particulate matter, ozone, sulfur oxides, carbon oxides, nitrogen oxides, and heavy metals, on the nervous system and describes the impact of various air pollutants on neurological disorders, providing ideas for follow-up research.

Cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between urinary arsenic and lung function among urban Chinese adults

To investigate the associations of arsenic exposure with lung function and ventilatory impairment. The repeated-measures study was developed with 8479 observations from three study periods of the Wuhan-Zhuhai cohort. Urinary arsenic and lung function were measured during each period. Linear mixed models were used to estimate the cross-sectional and longitudinal relationships between urinary arsenic and lung function. Logistic regression models and COX regression models were used to evaluate the cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between urinary arsenic and ventilatory impairment, respectively. In the cross-sectional analysis, each 1-unit increase in log-transformed urinary arsenic was associated with a -22.499 mL (95 % confidence interval (CI): -35.832 to -9.165), -15.081 mL (-25.205 to -4.957), and -0.274 % (-0.541 to -0.007) change in forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1), and FEV1/FVC, respectively. In the longitudinal analysis, each 1-unit increase in log-transformed urinary arsenic was associated with an annual change rate of -6.240 mL/year (95 % CI: -12.429 to -0.051), -5.855 mL/year (-10.632 to -1.079), and -0.143 %/year (-0.234 to -0.051) in FVC, FEV1, and FEV1/FVC, respectively. Stratified analyses suggested a modification role of gender on the cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between urinary arsenic and FEV1, with the stronger associations were found among males (P for modification 0.0384 and 0.0168). Furtherly, each 1-unit increase in log-transformed urinary arsenic was associated with a 14.8 % (odds ratio 1.148, 95 % CI: 1.043 to 1.263) and 11.7 % (hazard ratio 1.117, 95 % CI: 1.023 to 1.218) increase in the prevalent and incident risk of restrictive ventilatory impairment, respectively. Source analyses suggested that fish intake and fine particulate matter inhalation positively associated with the total arsenic levels. In conclusion, arsenic exposure was associated with lung function decline and the risk of restrictive ventilatory impairment.

Role of Macrophages in Air Pollution Exposure Related Asthma

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory airway disease characterized by variable airflow obstruction, bronchial hyper-responsiveness, and airway inflammation. The chronic inflammation of the airway is mediated by many cell types, cytokines, chemokines, and inflammatory mediators. Research suggests that exposure to air pollution has a negative impact on asthma outcomes in adult and pediatric populations. Air pollution is one of the greatest environmental risks to health, and it impacts the lungs' innate and adaptive defense systems. A major pollutant in the air is particulate matter (PM), a complex component composed of elemental carbon and heavy metals. According to the WHO, 99% of people live in air pollution where air quality levels are lower than the WHO air quality guidelines. This suggests that the effect of air pollution exposure on asthma is a crucial health issue worldwide. Macrophages are essential in recognizing and processing any inhaled foreign material, such as PM. Alveolar macrophages are one of the predominant cell types that process and remove inhaled PM by secreting proinflammatory mediators from the lung. This review focuses on macrophages and their role in orchestrating the inflammatory responses induced by exposure to air pollutants in asthma.

Wet deposition of atmospheric selenium and sensitivity to emission and precipitation patterns

Wet deposition has been well recognized to be affected by species concentration and precipitation; nevertheless, the regimes in the controlling factor of concentration or precipitation have not yet been clarified. Using a trace element, selenium (Se), with dual effects on human health as a testbed, we first reproduce the spatial distribution of atmospheric Se concentrations and wet deposition fluxes through GEOS-Chem on a global scale, and examine the spatial patterns and relative importance of anthropogenic emissions vs. natural emissions over various regions around the world. We find that over most Northern Hemisphere continental regions, anthropogenic emissions are the dominant source for atmospheric Se concentration and deposition, while it is dominated by natural sources in the other areas. Nested grid simulations covering China and the continental United States are further conducted. The factors (i.e., Se concentration and precipitation) controlling the wet deposition flux of atmospheric Se are analyzed in detail, through the construction of wet deposition-concentration-precipitation (WETD-C-P) diagram for two regions (mainland China and the continental United States) based on the monthly results. The two regions show distinctive features, reflecting the different spatial patterns of Se emissions and precipitation. Both Se emissions and precipitation are higher in the eastern United States than that in the western United States. In contrast, the emissions and precipitation in northern and southern China show dipole features with stronger emissions over the northern side and higher precipitation on the southern side. We further investigate the impacts of future emission changes in China on atmospheric Se deposition and its sensitivity to emissions and precipitation, revealing a modulation of regime shifts, i.e., from the precipitation dominant regime to the concurrent governance of both precipitation and emissions. The proposed WETD-C-P relationship is useful in elucidating the regime and factors governing the spatial and temporal variations in wet deposition.

The enhanced role of atmospheric reduced nitrogen deposition in future over East Asia-Northwest Pacific

The atmospheric nitrogen deposition plays a crucial role in natural ecosystem, and the changes in emissions substantially affect the amount of nitrogen deposition. Along with the decrease in NO_x emissions and increase in NH₃ emissions, the reduced nitrogen deposition may play a more important role in future. However, to what extent these changes may modify the reduced nitrogen deposition across East Asia, which is fulfilled with a large amount of nitrogen deposition, to the northwestern Pacific has not yet to be clear. Based on the results of multi-model ensemble of Atmospheric Chemistry and Climate Model Intercomparison Project (ACCMIP), the future changes of reduced nitrogen (NH_x) deposition is firstly examined. Here we show the changes of NH_x deposition flux is substantially modulated by both climate change and emissions, exhibiting an increasing trend over East Asia-Northwest Pacific in future under representative concentration pathways (RCP) 8.5 scenario, largely controlled by increase of NH₃ emissions, contrasting to the oxidized nitrogen deposition which is projected to decrease. Specifically, the ratio of NH_x to total nitrogen deposition in eastern China increases from 38% at present to 56% by the end of the century under RCP 8.5, indicative of a transition in the form of dominant nitrogen deposition from oxidized to reduced one. The increase is clearly discernable over the marginal seas and northwestern Pacific. Moreover, we identify a meridional shift of high wet NH_x deposition from northern China in summer to southern China in the other seasons. Based on simulations from regional models Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) and Community Multi-scale Air Quality (CMAQ), we find that the synergistically nonlinear modulation of NH_x concentration and precipitation triggers the north-south shift of wet NH_x deposition. The findings in this study indicate a potentially more important role of reduced nitrogen deposition on the natural ecosystem in future.

Nonlinear effect of air pollution on adult pneumonia hospital visits in the coastal city of Qingdao, China: A time-series analysis

Many studies have illustrated adverse effects of short-term exposure to air pollution on human health, which usually assumes a linear exposure-response (E-R) function in the delineation of health effects due to air pollution. However, nonlinearity may exist in the association between air pollutant concentrations and health outcomes such as adult pneumonia hospital visits, and there is a research gap in understanding the nonlinearity. Here, we utilized both the distributed lag model (DLM) and nonlinear model (DLNM) to compare the linear and nonlinear impacts of air pollution on adult pneumonia hospital visits in the coastal city of Qingdao, China. While both models show adverse effects of air pollutants on adult pneumonia hospital visits, the DLNM shows an attenuation of E-R curves at high concentrations. Moreover, the DLNM may reveal delayed health effects that may be missed in the DLM, e.g., ozone exposure and pneumonia hospital visits. With the stratified analysis of air pollutants on adult pneumonia hospital visits, both models consistently reveal that the influence of air pollutants is higher during the cold season than during the warm season. Nevertheless, they may behave differently in terms of other subgroups, such as age, gender and visit types. For instance, while no significant impact due to PM_2.5 in any of the subgroups abovementioned emerges based on DLM, the results from DLNM indicate statistically significant impacts for the subgroups of elderly, female and emergency department (ED) visits. With respect to adjustment by two-pollutants, PM₁₀ effect estimates for pneumonia hospital visits were the most robust in both DLM and DLNM, followed by NO₂ and SO₂ based on the DLNM. Considering the estimated health effects of air pollution relying on the assumed E-R functions, our results demonstrate that the traditional linear association assumptions may overlook some potential health risks.

As and [Formula: see text] cooccurrence in drinking water: critical review of the international scenario, physicochemical behavior, removal technologies, health effects, and future trends

Drinking water contaminated with As and [Formula: see text] is increasingly prevalent worldwide. Their coexistence can have negative effects due to antagonistic or synergistic mechanisms, ranging from cosmetic problems, such as skin lesions and teeth staining, to more severe abnormalities, such as cancer and neurotoxicity. Available technologies for concurrent removal include electrocoagulation ~ adsorption > membranes > chemical coagulation > , and among others, all of which have limitations despite their advantages. Nevertheless, the existence of competing ions such as silicon > phosphate > calcium ~ magnesium > sulfate > and nitrate affects the elimination efficiency. Mexico is one of the countries that is affected by As and [Formula: see text] contamination. Because only 10 of the 32 states have adequate removal technologies, more than 65% of the country is impacted by co-presence problems. Numerous reviews have been published concerning the elimination of As or [Formula: see text]. However, only a few studies have focused on the simultaneous removal. This critical review analyzes the new sources of contamination, simultaneous physicochemical behaviors, available technologies for the elimination of both species, and future trends. This highlights the need to implement technologies that work with actual contaminated water instead of aqueous solutions (55% of the works reviewed correspond to aqueous solutions). Similarly, it is necessary to migrate to the creation of pilot, pre-pilot, or prototype scale projects, because 77% of the existing studies correspond to lab-scale research.

DNA hydroxymethylation reprogramming of β-oxidation genes mediates early-life arsenic-evoked hepatic lipid accumulation in adult mice

The metabolic disorders are becoming an epidemic disease endangering public health in countries. Environmental factors are mainly reason for the growth of metabolic disorders. Previous research suggests that DNA methylation is a potential mechanism. Recently, it has been reported that DNA hydroxymethylation is also a stable marker of epigenetic reprogramming. Hence, the study aims to investigate whether DNA hydroxymehylation mediates early-life environmental stress-evoked metabolic disorder in adulthood. Mice were orally administered with arsenic (As), an environmental stressor, throughout pregnancy. We show that early-life As exposure induces glucose intolerance and hepatic lipid accumulation in adulthood. Early-life As exposure alters epigenetic reprogramming and expression of lipid metabolism-related genes including β-oxidation-specific genes in adulthood. Of interest, early-life As exposure alters epigenetic reprogramming of hepatic lipid metabolism partially through reducing DNA hydroxymethylation modification of β-oxidation-related genes in developing liver. Mechanistically, early-life As exposure suppresses ten-eleven translocation (TET) activity through downregulating isocitrate dehydrogenases (Idh) and reducing alpha-ketoglutarate (α-KG) content in the developing liver. In addition, early-life As exposure inhibits TET1 binding to CpG-rich fragments of β-oxidation-related genes in developing liver. This study provide novel evidence that early-life environmental stress leads to later life metabolic disorders by altering hepatic DNA hydroxymethylation reprogramming.

Characterizing the distinct modulation of future emissions on summer ozone concentrations between urban and rural areas over China

Previous studies on ozone pollution primarily focus on the characterization of ozone on a large regional scale, yet much less attention has been paid towards the contrast between urban and surrounding suburban-rural areas. As anthropogenic emissions are projected to decrease in the coming decades, the evolutions of ozone concentrations over urban and suburban-rural areas are compared using the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) model coupled with the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF). The top 25 city clusters are firstly identified across China based on the amount of NO_x emissions and population size. At present, the averages of maximum daily 8-h (MDA8) ozone concentrations over the suburban-rural areas (65.74 ppbv) among these city clusters are higher than the corresponding urban areas (62.00 ppbv). The projections in 2050s depend on the scenarios. Under the Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs) scenarios such as SSP1-2.6, SSP2-4.5 and SSP5-8.5 indicative of primary decreases in anthropogenic emissions, the mean MDA8 ozone concentrations in suburban-rural areas decrease more than urban areas. In contrast, the gap of higher MDA8 ozone concentrations in suburban-rural than urban areas increases under SSP3-7.0 concomitant with increase in anthropogenic emissions. The strongest response to emission changes is found in SSP1-2.6, in which anthropogenic emission reduction leads to lower MDA8 ozone concentrations in the suburban-rural than urban areas, reversing the present state of higher ozone concentrations in the suburban-rural areas. The feature abovementioned regarding changes of mean MDA8 ozone concentrations is largely reproduced in the response of ozone exceedance. The finding highlights different efficacies of anthropogenic emissions in urban from suburban-rural areas. In a region like China where the population density is much higher in urban than suburban-rural regions, the benefit of ozone reduction due to large emission reductions (e.g., SSP1-2.6) is diminished to some extent because the effect is larger in suburban-rural areas.

Inhibition of methanogenesis leads to accumulation of methylated arsenic species and enhances arsenic volatilization from rice paddy soil

Flooded soils are important environments for the biomethylation and subsequent volatilization of arsenic (As), a contaminant of global concern. Conversion of inorganic to methylated oxyarsenic species is thought to be the rate-limiting step in the production and emission of volatile (methyl)arsines. While methanogens and sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) have been identified as important regulators of methylated oxyarsenic concentrations in anaerobic soils, the effects of these microbial groups on biovolatilization remain unclear. Here, microcosm and batch incubation experiments with an Arkansas, USA, rice paddy soil were performed in conjunction with metabolic inhibition to test the effects of methanogenic activity on As speciation and biovolatilization. Inhibition of methanogenesis with 2-bromoethanesulfonate (BES) led to the accumulation of methylated oxyarsenic species, primarily dimethylarsinic acid (DMAs(V)), and a four-fold increase in As biovolatilization compared to a control soil. Our results support a conceptual model that methanogenic activity suppresses biovolatilization by enhancing As demethylation rates. This work refines understanding of biogeochemical processes regulating As biovolatilization in anaerobic soil environments, and extends recent insights into links between methanogenesis and As metabolism to soils from the mid-South United States rice production region.

Unveiling the dipole synergic effect of biogenic and anthropogenic emissions on ozone concentrations

Biogenic emissions are widely known as important precursors of ozone, yet there is potentially a strong interaction and synergy between biogenic and anthropogenic emissions, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and nitrogen oxides (NOx), in modulating ozone formation. To a large extent, the synergy affects the effectiveness of anthropogenic emission control, thereby reshaping the O₃-NOx-VOC empirical kinetic modeling approach (EKMA) diagram. Focusing on the ozone pollution period of June 2017 in the North China Plain, we design almost 500 numerical experiments using regional air quality model Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) that revealed an interesting synergic effect, defined as the contribution of biogenic emissions to ozone concentrations concomitant with a reduction in anthropogenic emissions. A quasi-EKMA diagram is constructed to delineate the contribution of biogenic emissions to ozone concentrations, indicative of a linearly amplified or nonlinearly weakened result associated with reductions in anthropogenic VOCs or NOx emissions, respectively, illustrating the dipole characteristics of the synergic effect. The reduced ozone contribution from biogenic emissions along with NOx emission reduction can be used to represent controllable biogenically induced ozone (BIO). Both the amplified and controllable BIO are tightly linked to both local emissions and regional transport, implicative of an essential role in joint regional emission control. In regard to ozone exceedance, the role of biogenic emissions may be even more important, in that its contribution is comparable to or even larger than that of anthropogenic emissions when associated with a reduction in anthropogenic emissions, which is clearly demonstrated based on the near carbon neutrality scenario shared socioeconomic pathway (SSP) 126. Meanwhile, the biogenic emissions may steer the modulation of anthropogenic emissions in the change rate of MDA8 ozone concentration. Therefore, the synergic effect of biogenic and anthropogenic emissions elucidated in this study should be carefully considered in future ozone pollution control.

Abundance and fractional solubility of phosphorus and trace metals in combustion ash and desert dust: Implications for bioavailability and reactivity

Aerosol phosphorus (P) and trace metals derived from natural processes and anthropogenic emissions have considerable impacts on ocean ecosystems, human health, and atmospheric processes. However, the abundance and fractional solubility of P and trace metals in combustion ash and desert dust, which are two of the largest emission sources of aerosols, are still not well understood. In this study, the abundance and fractional solubility of P and trace metals in seven coal fly ash samples, two municipal waste fly ash samples, and three desert dust samples were experimentally examined. It was found that the abundance of aluminum (Al) in combustion ash was comparable or even higher than that in desert dust, and, therefore, care should be taken when using Al as a tracer of desert dust. The abundance and fractional solubility of P were higher in combustion ash, with a soluble P content ~4-6 times higher than that of the desert dust, indicating that combustion ash could be an important source of bioavailable P in the atmosphere. Except for Mn, the abundance and fractional solubility of other heavy metals were higher in the combustion ash compared to the desert dust, indicating the potential importance of combustion ash in ocean ecosystems, human health, and atmospheric processes. In contrast, both the abundance and solubility of Mn were highest in the desert dust, indicating a potentially important source of soluble Mn in the atmosphere. The fractional solubilities of P and trace metals are significantly affected by acidity and ions in the extraction solutions, and it is suggested that a buffer solution can better represent the acidity of the aqueous system in the true atmospheric environment. The results of this study improve our understanding of the sources of bioavailable and reactive P and trace metals in ambient aerosols.

Mechanistic understanding of the toxic effects of arsenic and warfare arsenicals on human health and environment

Worldwide, more than 200 million people are estimated to be exposed to unsafe levels of arsenic. Chronic exposure to unsafe levels of groundwater arsenic is responsible for multiple human disorders, including dermal, cardiovascular, neurological, pulmonary, renal, and metabolic conditions. Consumption of rice and seafood (where high levels of arsenic are accumulated) is also responsible for human exposure to arsenic. The toxicity of arsenic compounds varies greatly and may depend on their chemical form, solubility, and concentration. Surprisingly, synthetic organoarsenicals are extremely toxic molecules which created interest in their development as chemical warfare agents (CWAs) during World War I (WWI). Among these CWAs, adamsite, Clark I, Clark II, and lewisite are of critical importance, as stockpiles of these agents still exist worldwide. In addition, unused WWII weaponized arsenicals discarded in water bodies or buried in many parts of the world continue to pose a serious threat to the environment and human health. Metabolic inhibition, oxidative stress, genotoxicity, and epigenetic alterations including micro-RNA-dependent regulation are some of the underlying mechanisms of arsenic toxicity. Mechanistic understanding of the toxicity of organoarsenicals is also critical for the development of effective therapeutic interventions. This review provides comprehensive details and a critical assessment of recently published data on various chemical forms of arsenic, their exposure, and implications on human and environmental health.

Epigenetic modifications from arsenic exposure: A comprehensive review

Arsenic is a notorious element with the potential to harm exposed individuals in ways that include cancerous and non-cancerous health complications. Millions of people across the globe (especially in South and Southeast Asian countries including China, Vietnam, India and Bangladesh) are currently being unknowingly exposed to precarious levels of arsenic. Among the diverse effects associated with such arsenic levels of exposure is the propensity to alter the epigenome. Although a large volume of literature exists on arsenic-induced genotoxicity, cytotoxicity, and inter-individual susceptibility due to active research on these subject areas from the last millennial, it is only recently that attention has turned on the ramifications and mechanisms of arsenic-induced epigenetic changes. The present review summarizes the possible mechanisms involved in arsenic induced epigenetic alterations. It focuses on the mechanisms underlying epigenome reprogramming from arsenic exposure that result in improper cell signaling and dysfunction of various epigenetic components. The mechanistic information articulated from the review is used to propose a number of novel therapeutic strategies with a potential for ameliorating the burden of worldwide arsenic poisoning.

Risk management for arsenic in agricultural soil-water systems: lessons learned from case studies in Europe

Chronic exposure to arsenic may be detrimental to health. We investigated the behaviour, remediation and risk management of arsenic in Freiberg, Germany, characterized by past mining activities, and near Verdun in France, where World War I ammunition was destroyed. The main results included: (1) pot experiments using a biologically synthesized adsorbent (sorpP) with spring barley reduced the mobility of arsenic, (2) the Omega-3 Index ecotoxicological tests verified that sorpP reduced the uptake and toxicity of arsenic in plants, (3) reverse osmosis membrane systems provided 99.5% removal efficiency of arsenic from surface water, (4) the sustainability assessment revealed that adsorption and coagulation-filtration processes were the most feasible options for the treatment of surface waters with significant arsenic concentrations, and (5) a model was developed for assessing health risk due to arsenic exposure. Risk management is the main option for extensive areas, while remediation options that directly treat the soil can only be considered in small areas subject to sensitive use. We recommend the risk management procedure developed in Germany for other parts of the world where both geogenic and anthropogenic arsenic is present in agricultural soil and water. Risk management measures have been successful both in Freiberg and in Verdun.

Association between Arsenic Level, Gene Expression in Asian Population, and In Vitro Carcinogenic Bladder Tumor

The IARC classified arsenic (As) as "carcinogenic to humans." Despite the health consequences of arsenic exposure, there is no molecular signature available yet that can predict when exposure may lead to the development of disease. To understand the molecular processes underlying arsenic exposure and the risk of disease development, this study investigated the functional relationship between high arsenic exposure and disease risk using gene expression derived from human exposure. In this study, a three step analysis was employed: (1) the gene expression profiles obtained from two diverse arsenic-exposed Asian populations were utilized to identify differentially expressed genes associated with arsenic exposure in human subjects, (2) the gene expression profiles induced by arsenic exposure in four different myeloma cancer cell lines were used to define common genes and pathways altered by arsenic exposure, and (3) the genetic profiles of two publicly available human bladder cancer studies were used to test the significance of the common association of genes, identified in step 1 and step 2, to develop and validate a predictive model of primary bladder cancer risk associated with arsenic exposure. Our analysis shows that arsenic exposure to humans is mainly associated with organismal injury and abnormalities, immunological disease, inflammatory disease, gastrointestinal disease, and increased rates of a wide variety of cancers. In addition, arsenic exerts its toxicity by generating reactive oxygen species (ROS) and increasing ROS production causing the imbalance that leads to cell and tissue damage (oxidative stress). Oxidative stress activates inflammatory pathways leading to transformation of a normal cell to tumor cell specifically; there is significant evidence of the advancing changes in oxidative/nitrative stress during the progression of bladder cancer. Therefore, we examined the relation of differentially expressed genes due to exposure of arsenic in human and bladder cancer and developed a bladder cancer risk prediction model. In this study, integrin-linked kinase (ILK) was one of the most significant pathways identified between both arsenic exposed population which plays a key role in eliciting a protective response to oxidative damage in epidermal cells. On the other hand, several studies showed that arsenic trioxide (ATO) is useful for anticancer therapy although the mechanisms underlying its paradoxical effects are still not well understood. ATO has shown remarkable efficacy for the treatment of multiple myeloma; therefore, it will be helpful to understand the underlying cancer biology by which ATO exerts its inhibitory effect on the myeloma cells. Our study found that MAPK is one of the most active network between arsenic gene and ATO cell line which is involved in indicative of oxidative/nitrosative damage and well associated with the development of bladder cancer. The study identified a unique set of 147 genes associated with arsenic exposure and linked to molecular mechanisms of cancer. The risk prediction model shows the highest prediction ability for recurrent bladder tumors based on a very small subset (NKIRAS2, AKTIP, and HLA-DQA1) of the 147 genes resulting in AUC of 0.94 (95% CI: 0.744-0.995) and 0.75 (95% CI: 0.343-0.933) on training and validation data, respectively.

Potential environmental risk of trace elements in fly ash and gypsum from ultra-low emission coal-fired power plants in China

The ultra-low emission retrofitting (ULE) in China's coal-fired power plants (CFPPs) enhances removal efficiencies of trace elements, which may increase their contents in fly ash and gypsum. However, their potential environmental risks in these wastes have been scarcely evaluated. Experiments indicated that the trace elements in fly ash and gypsum accounted for approximately 92.9-98.2% of the total outputs. Most trace elements in these wastes existed mainly as mobile/leachable forms, except for the Hg in fly ash (residual form). We comprehensively evaluated the potential environmental risks of trace elements in fly ash and gypsum from ULE CFPPs in China using a modified risk assessment approach that integrates a trace element enrichment model for waste, and chemical speciation datasets. We found that nationally, trace elements in gypsum represented low levels of potential risk, even after ULE. However, the potential moderate environmental risk of fly ash has aroused attention because of trace element pollution, where Hg and Cd contributed the major risks. The relatively high risks from fly ash are mainly distributed in Guangxi, Hunan and Hebei provinces. The disposal of fly ash in these areas should be given special attention in the future.

Interactions with Arsenic: Mechanisms of Toxicity and Cellular Resistance in Eukaryotic Microorganisms

Arsenic (As) is quite an abundant metalloid, with ancient origin and ubiquitous distribution, which represents a severe environmental risk and a global problem for public health. Microbial exposure to As compounds in the environment has happened since the beginning of time. Selective pressure has induced the evolution of various genetic systems conferring useful capacities in many microorganisms to detoxify and even use arsenic, as an energy source. This review summarizes the microbial impact of the As biogeochemical cycle. Moreover, the poorly known adverse effects of this element on eukaryotic microbes, as well as the As uptake and detoxification mechanisms developed by yeast and protists, are discussed. Finally, an outlook of As microbial remediation makes evident the knowledge gaps and the necessity of new approaches to mitigate this environmental challenge.

Joint effect of urinary arsenic species and serum one-carbon metabolism nutrients on gestational diabetes mellitus: A cross-sectional study of Chinese pregnant women

BACKGROUND

Growing evidence indicates that arsenic (As) exposure can increase the risk of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). However, little is known about As species and GDM and the combined effect of As and one-carbon metabolism (OCM) on GDM.

OBJECTIVES

We aimed to examine the associations between As species and GDM and evaluate the potential interactions of folate, vitamin B₁₂, and homocysteine (Hcy) with As species on GDM prevalence.

METHOD

We measured levels of arsenite (As³⁺), arsenate (As⁵⁺), dimethylarsinic acid (DMA), and arsenobetaine (AsB) species in urine and folate, vitamin B₁₂, and Hcy in serum from 396 pregnant women in Tianjin, China. The diagnosis of GDM was based on an oral glucose tolerance test. Associations of As species in urine with GDM were evaluated using generalized linear models (GLMs) and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR). Additive interactions of As and OCM with GDM were estimated by determining the relative excess risk due to interaction (RERI).

RESULTS

Of the 396 pregnant women, 89 were diagnosed with GDM. Continuous increases in urinary inorganic As were associated with GDM in the GLMs, with adjusted odds ratios of 2.12 (95% CI: 0.96, 4.71) for As³⁺, and 0.27 (95% CI: 0.07, 0.98) for As⁵⁺. The BKMR in estimating the exposure-response functions showed that As³⁺ and AsB were positively associated with GDM. However, As⁵⁺ showed a negative relationship with GDM. Although the additive interactions between As exposure and OCM indicators were not significant, we found that pregnant women with higher urinary As³⁺ and total As accompanied by lower serum vitamin B₁₂ were more likely to have higher odds of GDM (3.12, 95% CI: 1.32, 7.38 and 3.10, 95% CI: 1.30, 7.38, respectively).

CONCLUSIONS

Our data suggest a positive relation between As³⁺ and GDM but a negative relation between As⁵⁺ and GDM. Potential additive interaction of As and OCM with GDM requires further investigation.

Synthetically engineered microbial scavengers for enhanced bioremediation

Microbial bioremediation has gained attention as a cheap, efficient, and sustainable technology to manage the increasing environmental pollution. Since microorganisms in nature are not evolved to degrade pollutants, there is an increasing demand for developing safer and more efficient pollutant-scavengers for enhanced bioremediation. In this review, we introduce the strategies and technologies developed in the field of synthetic biology and their applications to the construction of microbial scavengers with improved efficiency of biodegradation while minimizing the impact of genetically engineered microbial scavengers on ecosystems. In addition, we discuss recent achievements in the biodegradation of fastidious pollutants, greenhouse gases, and microplastics using engineered microbial scavengers. Using synthetic microbial scavengers and multidisciplinary technologies, toxic pollutants could be more easily eliminated, and the environment could be more efficiently recovered.

Significant but Spatiotemporal-Heterogeneous Health Risks Caused by Airborne Exposure to Multiple Toxic Trace Elements in China

Airborne trace elements (TEs) pose a notable threat to human health due to their toxicity and carcinogenicity, whereas their exposures and associated health risks in China remain unclear. Here, we present the first nationwide assessment of spatiotemporal exposure to 11 TEs in China by coupling a bottom-up emission inventory with a modified CMAQ model capable of TE simulation. Associated health risks of 11 TEs are then evaluated using a set of risk assessment models. Our results show that the CMAQ model could reasonably reproduce the spatiotemporal variations of 11 TEs in China compared to observations. We find significant but spatiotemporal-heterogeneous cancer risks associated with high-level exposure of TEs in China. Gridded cell concentrations of hexavalent chromium, arsenic, and nickel in eastern and central China usually exceed China's air quality standard limits, resulting in significant cancer risks that affected over 85% of the entire population in China in 2015. National annual mean population-weighted concentrations of 11 TEs decrease by 9.8-35.6% from 2012 to 2015, largely attributed to emission reduction from coal combustion. Our study provides critical insights for policymakers to implement stricter measures to alleviate health burdens and benefit relevant epidemiological research on airborne TEs.

Atmospheric Vanadium Emission Inventory from Both Anthropogenic and Natural Sources in China

Vanadium is a strategically important metal in the world, although sustained exposure under high vanadium levels may lead to notable adverse impact on health. Here, we leverage a bottom-up approach to quantitatively evaluate vanadium emissions from both anthropogenic and natural sources during 1949-2017 in China for the first time. The results show that vanadium emissions increased by 86% from 1949 to 2005 to a historical peak value and then gradually decreased to 12.9 kt in 2017. With the effective implementation of air pollution control measures, vanadium emissions from anthropogenic sources decreased sharply after 2011. During 2011-2017, about half of vanadium emissions came from coal and oil combustion. In addition, industrial processes and natural sources also cannot be ignored, with the total contributions of more than 24%. The high levels of vanadium emissions were mainly distributed throughout the North China Plain and the eastern and coastal regions, especially in several urban agglomerations. Furthermore, the comprehensive evaluation by incorporating contrastive analysis, Monte Carlo approach, and GEOS-Chem simulation shows that vanadium emissions estimated in this study were reasonable and acceptable. The findings of our study provide not only a scientific foundation for investigating the health effects of vanadium but also useful information for formulating mitigation strategies.

Insights into the source-specific health risk of ambient particle-bound metals in the Pearl River Delta region, China

Quantification of source-specific health risks of PM2.5 plays an essential role in health-oriented air pollution control. However, there is limited evidence supporting the source-based risk apportionment of particle-bound metals. In this study, source-specific cancer and non-cancer risk characterization of 12 particle-bound metals was performed in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region, China. A combination of health risk assessment model and receptor-based source apportionment modeling with positive matrix factorization (PMF) was applied for characterizing the spatial-temporal patterns for inhalation health risks of particle-bound metals in three main city clusters, inland area and coastal area in the region from December 2014 through July 2016. Results showed that the carcinogenic risk of particle-bound metals for adults (4.13 × 10-5) was higher than that for children (9.53 × 10-6) in the PRD region. The highest and significant non-carcinogenic risk was found in the northwest city cluster. Industrial emission (63.3%) were the dominant contributors to the cancer risk, while the main contributors to the non-cancer risk were the vehicle emission source (33.2%) in the dry season and industrial emission (30.8%) in the wet season. Our results provide important evidence for spatial source-specific health risks with temporal characteristics of particle-bound metals in most densely populated areas in the southern China, and suggest that reduction of industrial and vehicle emissions could facilitate more cost-effective PM2.5 control measures to improve human health.
