Abstract
Although selenium (Se) reserves are crucial for the development and exploitation of Se-rich resources in karst soil areas, research on these reserves is still limited. A comprehensive study was conducted in a typical karst region known for its Se richness. A total of 12,547 surface soil samples, 134 deep soil samples, and 60 soil profiles from various locations were systematically collected. The findings showed that the Se content in the surface soil ranged from 0.073 to 9.04 mg/kg, with a baseline level of 0.84 mg/kg. This underscores the high background level and moderate variability in the region. Surface soil Se exhibited a notable positive correlation with deep soil Se, and an inverse correlation with pH (p < 0.01). One-way analysis of variance indicated that land formations and soil structure were the primary determinants affecting the concentration of Se in the topsoil (p = 0.000), with parent rock type and land-use type following closely (p = 0.003). In addition, the study included an investigation of soil Se variations with depth using 60 soil profiles. Through this analysis, it was revealed that Se content exhibited an exponential change with depth. Multiple integrations were employed to derive formulas for calculating Se reserves in the 0-200 cm depth range. Following these calculations, the estimations of Se stockpile across diverse types of source materials, varieties of soils, and land management methods were determined, highlighting the findings using a passive construction. This paper lays the groundwork for advancing the extraction and application of Se.

Abstract
Selenium (Se) is an essential micronutrient with an important atmospheric component in its biogeochemical cycle. In this cycle, phytoplankton form volatile organic Se species, such as dimethyl selenide (CH3SeCH3) and dimethyl diselenide (CH3SeSeCH3), which are emitted into the atmosphere. To predict the atmospheric fate of these methylated Se compounds, we investigated their ozonolysis reaction. We used proton-transfer-reaction time-of-flight mass spectrometry to quantify atmospheric Se and its isotopes, and used this method in kinetic and product studies. The ozonolysis of CH3SeCH3 proceeded with a rate constant of (7.4 ± 2.2) × 10-17 cm3 molec-1 s-1 at 26 ± 1 °C with an activation energy of 50 ± 14 kJ mol-1 forming dimethyl selenoxide (CH3Se(O)CH3). Comparatively, CH3SeSeCH3 reacted with O3 at (2.6 ± 0.9) × 10-17 cm3 molec-1 s-1 at 27 ± 1 °C with an activation energy of 56 ± 5 kJ mol-1 forming methylselinic acid (CH3Se(O)OH). At 20 ppbv of O3, the atmospheric lifetimes of CH3SeCH3 and CH3SeSeCH3 are 7.6 and 22 h, respectively. The Se oxidation products were confirmed by synthesis and can serve as new atmospheric tracers of methylated Se compounds. Overall, we measured Se isotopes in real time and determined the rate constants, activation energies, and oxidation products. These mechanisms can now be used to determine the quantitative atmospheric fate of Se toward O3, and thus its distribution within a changing climate.

Abstract
Micro-analytical techniques to untangle Se distribution and chemical speciation in plants coupled with molecular biology analysis enable the deciphering of metabolic pathways responsible for Se tolerance and accumulation. Selenium (Se) is not essential for plants and is toxic at high concentrations. However, Se hyperaccumulator plants have evolved strategies to both tolerate and accumulate > 1000 µg Se g-1 DW in their living above-ground tissues. Given the complexity of the biochemistry of Se, various approaches have been adopted to study Se metabolism in plants. These include X-ray-based techniques for assessing distribution and chemical speciation of Se, and molecular biology techniques to identify genes implicated in Se uptake, transport, and assimilation. This review presents these techniques, synthesises the current state of knowledge on Se metabolism in plants, and highlights future directions for research into Se (hyper)accumulation and tolerance. We conclude that powerful insights may be gained from coupling information on the distribution and chemical speciation of Se to genome-scale studies to identify gene functions and molecular mechanisms that underpin Se tolerance and accumulation in these ecologically and biotechnologically important plants species. The study of Se metabolism is challenging and is a useful testbed for developing novel analytical approaches that are potentially more widely applicable to the study of the regulation of a wide range of metal(loid)s in hyperaccumulator plants.

Abstract
Despite ongoing public health measures and increasing vaccination rates, deaths and disease severity caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and its new emergent variants continue to threaten the health of people around the world. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop novel strategies for research, diagnosis, treatment, and government policies to combat the variant strains of SARS-CoV-2. Since the state-of-the-art COVID-19 pandemic, the role of selenium in dealing with COVID-19 disease has been widely discussed due to its importance as an essential micronutrient. This review aims at providing all antiviral activities of nanoselenium (Nano-Se) ever explored using different methods in the literature. We systematically summarize the studied antiviral activities of Nano-Se required to project it as an efficient antiviral system as a function of shape, size, and synthesis method. The outcomes of this article not only introduce Nano-Se to the scientific community but also motivate scholars to adopt Nano-Se to tackle any serious virus such as mutated SARS-CoV-2 to achieve an effective antiviral activity in a desired manner.

Abstract
The biotransformation of heavy metals in the environment is usually affected by co-existing pollutants like selenium (Se), which may lower the ecotoxicity of heavy metals, but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we shed light on the pathways of copper (Cu2+) and selenite (SeO32-) synergistic biodetoxification by Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 and illustrate how such processes are affected by anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonate (AQDS), an analogue of humic substances. We observed the formation of copper selenide nanoparticles (Cu2-xSe) from synergistic detoxification of Cu2+ and SeO32- in the periplasm. Interestingly, adding AQDS triggered a fundamental transition from periplasmic to extracellular reaction, enabling 14.7-fold faster Cu2+ biodetoxification (via mediated electron transfer) and 11.4-fold faster SeO32- detoxification (via direct electron transfer). This is mainly attributed to the slightly raised redox potential of the heme center of AQDS-coordinated outer-membrane proteins that accelerates electron efflux from the cells. Our work offers a fundamental understanding of the synergistic detoxification of heavy metals and Se in a complicated environmental matrix and unveils an unexpected role of AQDS beyond electron mediation, which may guide the development of more efficient environmental remediation and resource recovery biotechnologies.

Abstract
Selenium (Se) is essential for human health, however, data on population Se status and agriculture-nutrition-health linkages are limited in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). The scoping review aims to identify linkages between Se in soils/crops, dietary Se intakes, and livestock and human Se status in SSA. Online databases, organisational websites and grey literature were used to identify articles. Articles were screened at title, abstract and full text levels using eligibility criteria. The search yielded 166 articles from which 112 were excluded during abstract screening and 54 full text articles were assessed for eligibility. The scoping review included 34 primary studies published between 1984 and 2021. The studies covered Se concentrations in soils (n = 7), crops (n = 9), animal tissues (n = 2), livestock (n = 3), and human Se status (n = 15). The evidence showed that soil/crop Se concentrations affected Se concentration in dietary sources, dietary Se intake and biomarkers of Se status. Soil types are a primary driver of human Se status and crop Se concentration correlates positively with biomarkers of Se dietary status. Although data sets of Se concentrations exist across the food system in SSA, there is limited evidence on linkages across the agriculture-nutrition nexus. Extensive research on Se linkages across the food chain is warranted.

Abstract
Selenium is a trace element essential for the proper functioning of human body. Since it can only be obtained through our diet, knowing its concentrations in different food products is of particular importance. The measurement of selenium content in complex food matrices has traditionally been a challenge due to the very low concentrations involved. Some of the difficulties may arise from the abundance of various compounds, which are additionally present in examined material at different concentration levels. The solution to this problem is the efficient separation/preconcentration of selenium from the analyzed matrix, followed by its reliable quantification. This review offers an insight into cloud point extraction, a separation technique that is often used in conjunction with spectrometric analysis. The method allows for collecting information on selenium levels in waters of different complexity (drinking water, river and lake waters), beverages (wine, juices), and a broad range of food (cereals, legumes, fresh fruits and vegetables, tea, mushrooms, nuts, etc.).

Abstract
The paper aims to compare parameters of lipid peroxidation and antioxidant defense system, as well as blood biochemical composition in infertile cows from groups that differ in terms of selenium content in agrocoenosis. Forty-five black-motley and red-motley breeds in each region were selected for the experiment; the groups were formed on the basis of the pathology, 15 animals each. The level of microelements in the blood of animals from all groups in the selenium-deficient biogeochemical province is significantly reduced by 38.4-41.7% (P < 0.05). In these cows, the concentration of malondialdehyde increased significantly, by 1.5-2.1 times (P < 0.05), against the background of decrease in the activity of glutathione antioxidant defense: glutathione peroxidase by 9.4-32.1% (P < 0.05), glutathione reductase by 2.4-2.6 times (P < 0.05), also superoxide dismutase and catalase in some groups. In the groups of infertile animals with lowered selenium content in blood, the author found an increase in enzymes' activity (P < 0.05): alanine aminotransferase by 25.6-52.6%, aspartate aminotransferase by 17.8% in cysts and by 44.3% in ovarian hypofunction, gamma-glutamyltransferase by 18.3% in ovarian hypofunction. In addition, the calcium content in the blood of cows was reduced by 8.1-14.0% (P < 0.05) when selenium levels were lowered. In combination with elevated levels of urea and urea/creatinine ratio, the above may be evidence of pathological processes in muscle, liver, and kidney tissues. Thus, the author traced the dependence of the balance of lipid peroxidation and antioxidant defense system on the microelement level, as well as the effect of low selenium provision of animals in biogeochemical provinces on the biochemical composition of their blood.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Understanding the relationships between nutrition, human health and plant food source is among the highest priorities for public health. Therefore, enhancing the minerals content such as iron (Fe), zinc (Zn) and selenium (Se) in barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) grains is an urgent need to improve the nutritive value of barley grains in overcoming malnutrition and its potential consequencing. This study aimed to expedite biofortification of barley grains by elucidating the genetic basis of Zn, Fe, and Se accumulation in the grains, which will contribute to improved barley nutritional quality. RESULTS A genome-wide association study (GWAS) was conducted to detect the genetic architecture for grain Zn, Fe, and Se accumulations in 216 spring barley accessions across two years. All the accessions were genotyped by single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) molecular markers. Mineral heritability values ranging from moderate to high were revealed in both environments. Remarkably, there was a high natural phenotypic variation for all micronutrient accumulation in the used population. High-LD SNP markers (222 SNPs) were detected to be associated with all micronutrients in barley grains across the two environments plus BLUEs. Three genomic regions were detected based on LD, which were identified for the most effective markers that had associations with more than one trait. The strongest SNP-trait associations were found to be physically located within genes that may be involved in grain Zn and Fe homeostasis. Two putative candidate genes were annotated as Basic helix loop helix (BHLH) family transcription factor and Squamosa promoter binding-like protein, respectively, and have been suggested as candidates for increased grain Zn, Fe, and Se accumulation. CONCLUSIONS These findings shed a light on the genetic basis of Zn, Fe, and Se accumulation in barley grains and have the potential to assist plant breeders in selecting accessions with high micronutrient concentrations to enhance grain quality and, ultimately human health.

Abstract
This study review the prevalence of selenium deficiency after bariatric surgery, incidence, and symptoms. A systematic literature search and meta-analysis was performed in PubMed and Scopus for articles published by November 1, 2021, including the keywords "Roux-en Y gastric bypass", "RYGB", "Omega bypass", "Mini bypass", "One anastomosis gastric bypass", "Bariatric surgery", "Weight loss surgery", "Metabolic surgery", "Gastric bypass", "Loop gastric bypass", "Selenium", "Selenium deficiency", or a combination of aimed tothem in the title or abstract. In this review, nine studies examining a total of 1174 patients were included in this meta-analysis. The mean age of the patients was 41.14 ± 7.69 years. The mean interval between bariatric surgery and selenium deficiency was 40.36 ± 43.29 months. Mean BMI before surgery and at the time of selenium deficiency was 43.68 ± 4.91 kg/m2 and 28.41 ± 9.09 kg/m2, respectively. Additionally, the results showed a prevalence of 16% and 2% of selenium deficiency at 1- and 2-year follow-up after bariatric surgery, respectively. Symptoms included weakness, myopathy, and cardiomyopathy, loss of muscle mass, erythematous desquamating eruption, lethargy, dyspnea, and bilateral lower extremity pitting edema. Forty percent of studies reported "Selenium orally (100 μg once daily)" as treatment option. A multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals, including dietitians, should be involved in the bariatric patient's care. As a result, clinicians should encourage patients to take supplements for the rest of their lives, and patients should be monitored after surgery if necessary.

Abstract
Osteoporosis, characterized by low bone mass and a disruption of bone microarchitecture, is traditionally treated using drugs or lifestyle modifications. Recently, several preclinical and clinical studies have investigated the effects of selenium on bone health, although the results are controversial. Selenium, an important trace element, is required for selenoprotein synthesis and acts crucially for proper growth and skeletal development. However, the intake of an optimum amount of selenium is critical, as both selenium deficiency and toxicity are hazardous for health. In this review, we have systematically analyzed the existing literature in this field to determine whether dietary or serum selenium concentrations are associated with bone health. In addition, the mode of administration of selenium as a supplement for treating bone disease is important. We have also highlighted the importance of using green-synthesized selenium nanoparticles as therapeutics for bone disease. Novel nanobiotechnology will be a bridgehead for clinical applications of trace elements and natural products.

Abstract
Selenium status plays a major role in health impacts of various RNA viruses. We previously reported potential antisense interactions between viral mRNAs and host mRNAs encoding isoforms of the antioxidant selenoprotein thioredoxin reductase (TXNRD). Here, we examine possible targeting of selenoprotein mRNAs by Zika virus (ZIKV), because one of the most devastating outcomes of ZIKV infection in neonates, microcephaly, is a key manifestation of Progressive Cerebello-Cerebral Atrophy (PCCA), a genetic disease of impaired selenoprotein synthesis. Potential antisense matches between ZIKV and human selenoprotein mRNAs were identified computationally, the strongest being against human TXNRD1 and selenoprotein P (SELENOP), a selenium carrier protein essential for delivery of selenium to the brain. Computationally, ZIKV has regions of extensive (~30bp) and stable (ΔE < -50kcal/mol) antisense interactions with both TXNRD1 and SELENOP mRNAs. The core ZIKV/SELENOP hybridization was experimentally confirmed at the DNA level by gel shift assay using synthetic oligonucleotides. In HEK293T cells, using Western blot probes for SELENOP and TXNRD1, ZIKV infection knocked down SELENOP protein expression almost completely, by 99% (p<0.005), and TXNRD1 by ~90% (p<0.05). In contrast, by RT-qPCR, there was no evidence of significant changes in SELENOP and TXNRD1 mRNA levels after ZIKV infection, suggesting that their knockdown at the protein level is not primarily a result of mRNA degradation. These results suggest that knockdown of SELENOP and TXNRD1 by ZIKV in fetal brain, possibly antisense-mediated, could mimic SELENOP knockout, thereby contributing to neuronal cell death and symptoms similar to the genetic disease PCCA, including brain atrophy and microcephaly.

Abstract
Selenium (Se) is an essential trace element for human and animal health, and toward an understanding of the uptake and translocation of Se in plants is important from the perspective of Se biofortification. In this study, we conducted hydroponic experiments to investigate the mechanisms of organic Se [selenomethionine (SeMet) and selenomethionine-oxide (SeOMet)] uptake, translocation, and the interactions between SeMet and SeOMet in rice. We also investigated differences in the dynamics of organic and inorganic Se uptake by rice roots. Concentration-dependent kinetic results revealed that SeMet uptake during a 1 h exposure was 3.19-16.0 times higher than that of three other Se chemical forms, with uptake capacity (Vmax ) values ordered as follows: SeMet>SeOMet>selenite>selenate. Furthermore, time-dependent kinetic analysis revealed that SeMet uptake by roots and content in shoots were initially clearly higher than those of SeOMet, although the differences gradually diminished with prolonged exposure time; while no significant difference was found in the transfer factor of Se from rice roots to shoots between SeMet and SeOMet. Root uptake of SeOMet was significantly inhibited by carbonyl cyanide 3-chlorophenylhydrazone (CCCP) (30.4%), AgNO3 (41.8%), and tetraethylammonium chloride (TEACl) (45.6%), indicating that SeOMet uptake is a metabolically active process, and that it could be mediated via aquaporins and K+ channels. Contrarily, SeMet uptake was insensitive to CCCP, although markedly inhibited by AgNO3 (93.1%), indicating that rice absorbs SeMet primarily via aquaporins. Furthermore, Se uptake and translocation in rice treated simultaneously with both SeMet and SeOMet were considerably lower than those in rice treated with SeMet treatment alone and notably lower than the theoretical quantity, indicating interactions between SeMet and SeOMet. Our findings provide important insights into the mechanisms underlying the uptake and translocation of organic Se within plants.

Abstract
Iodine and selenium deficiencies are common worldwide. We assessed the iodine and selenium status of Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan. We determined the elemental composition (ICP-MS) of locally grown crops (n = 281), drinking water (n = 82), urine (n = 451) and salt (n = 76), correcting urinary analytes for hydration (creatinine, specific gravity). We estimated dietary iodine, selenium and salt intake. Median iodine and selenium concentrations were 11.5 (IQR 6.01, 23.2) and 8.81 (IQR 4.03, 27.6) µg/kg in crops and 0.24 (IQR 0.12, 0.72) and 0.27 (IQR 0.11, 0.46) µg/L in water, respectively. Median iodised salt iodine was 4.16 (IQR 2.99, 10.8) mg/kg. Population mean salt intake was 13.0 g/day. Population median urinary iodine (uncorrected 78 µg/L, specific gravity-corrected 83 µg/L) was below WHO guidelines; creatinine-corrected median was 114 µg/L but was unreliable. Daily selenium intake (from urinary selenium concentration) was below the EAR in the majority (46-90%) of individuals. Iodine and selenium concentrations in all crops were low, but no health-related environmental standards exist. Iodine concentration in iodised salt was below WHO-recommended minimum. Estimated population average salt intake was above WHO-recommended daily intake. Locally available food and drinking water together provide an estimated 49% and 72% of EAR for iodine (95 µg/day) and selenium (45 µg/day), respectively. Low environmental and dietary iodine and selenium place Gilgit-Baltistan residents at risk of iodine deficiency disorders despite using iodised salt. Specific gravity correction of urine analysis for hydration is more consistent than using creatinine. Health-relevant environmental standards for iodine and selenium are needed.

Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic has drawn attention to food insecurity in developed countries. Despite adequate levels of agricultural production, consumers experienced demand-induced scarcity. Understanding the effects on nutrition and the environment is limited, yet critical to informing ecologically embedded mitigation strategies. To identify mitigation strategies, we investigated wheat flour and egg retail shortages in the United Kingdom (UK), focusing on consumer behavior during the COVID-19 lockdown. The 6 Steps for Quality Intervention Development (6SQuID) framework informed the methodology. Mixed qualitative and quantitative methods were used to pinpoint the causes of the shortages, and ecological impacts of consumer behavior were related using survey results (n = 243) and environmental and nutritional databases. This research confirmed consumers' narrowed consideration set, willingness to pay, and significant reliance on processed foods which indicates agronomic biofortification, breeding strategies, selective imports and improved processed food quality are important mitigation strategies. We identified positive and negative synergies in consumer, producer and retailer behavior and related these to mitigation strategies in support of a circular bio-economy for food production. We found that the substitutes or alternative foods consumed during the COVID-19 lockdown were nutritionally inadequate. We identified the most ecological substitute for wheat flour to be corn flour; and for eggs, yogurt. Our findings also indicate that selenium deficiency is a risk for the UK population, especially to the increasing fifth of the population that is vegetarian. Due to the need to implement short-, medium-, and long-term mitigation strategies, a coordinated effort is required by all stakeholders.

Abstract
Selenium (Se) deficiency affects many millions of people worldwide, and the volatilization of methylated Se species to the atmosphere may prevent Se from entering the food chain. Despite the extent of Se deficiency, little is known about fluxes in volatile Se species and their temporal and spatial variation in the environment, giving rise to uncertainty in atmospheric transport models. To systematically determine fluxes, one can rely on laboratory microcosm experiments to quantify Se volatilization in different conditions. Here, it is demonstrated that the sulfur (S) status of bacteria crucially determines the amount of Se volatilized. Solid-phase microextraction gas chromatography mass spectrometry showed that Pseudomonas tolaasii efficiently and rapidly (92% in 18 h) volatilized Se to dimethyl diselenide and dimethyl selenyl sulfide through promiscuous enzymatic reactions with the S metabolism. However, when the cells were supplemented with cystine (but not methionine), a major proportion of the Se (∼48%) was channeled to thus-far-unknown, nonvolatile Se compounds at the expense of the previously formed dimethyl diselenide and dimethyl selenyl sulfide (accounting for <4% of total Se). Ion chromatography and solid-phase extraction were used to isolate unknowns, and electrospray ionization ion trap mass spectrometry, electrospray ionization quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry, and microprobe nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry were used to identify the major unknown as a novel Se metabolite, 2-hydroxy-3-(methylselanyl)propanoic acid. Environmental S concentrations often exceed Se concentrations by orders of magnitude. This suggests that in fact S status may be a major control of selenium fluxes to the atmosphere. IMPORTANCE Volatilization from soil to the atmosphere is a major driver for Se deficiency. “Bottom-up” models for atmospheric Se transport are based on laboratory experiments quantifying volatile Se compounds. The high Se and low S concentrations in such studies poorly represent the environment. Here, we show that S amino acid status has in fact a decisive effect on the production of volatile Se species in Pseudomonas tolaasii. When the strain was supplemented with S amino acids, a major proportion of the Se was channeled to thus-far-unknown, nonvolatile Se compounds at the expense of volatile compounds. This hierarchical control of the microbial S amino acid status on Se cycling has been thus far neglected. Understanding these interactions—if they occur in the environment—will help to improve atmospheric Se models and thus predict drivers of Se deficiency.

Abstract
This review answers the question of why selenium is such an important trace element in the human diet. Daily dietary intake of selenium and its content in various food products is discussed in this paper, as well as the effects of its deficiency and excess in the body. Moreover, the biological activity of selenium, which it performs mainly through selenoproteins, is discussed. These specific proteins are responsible for thyroid hormone management, fertility, the aging process, and immunity, but their key role is to maintain a redox balance in cells. Furthermore, taking into account world news and the current SARS-CoV-2 virus pandemic, the impact of selenium on the course of COVID-19 is also discussed. Another worldwide problem is the number of new cancer cases and cancer-related mortality. Thus, the last part of the article discusses the impact of selenium on cancer risk based on clinical trials (including NPC and SELECT), systematic reviews, and meta-analyses. Additionally, this review discusses the possible mechanisms of selenium action that prevent cancer development.

Abstract
Dietary organic selenium (Se) is commonly utilized to increase formation of selenoproteins, including the major antioxidant protein, glutathione peroxidase (GPx). Inorganic Se salts, such as sodium selenite, are also incorporated into selenoproteins, and there is evidence that nanoelemental Se added to the diet may also be effective. We conducted two trials, the first investigated inorganic Se (selenite), organic Se (L-selenomethionine) and nanoelemental Se, in conventional mice. Their bioavailability and effectiveness to increase GPx activity were examined. The second trial focused on determining the mechanism by which dietary Se is incorporated into tissue, utilising both conventional and germ-free (GF) mice. Mice were fed a diet with minimal Se, 0.018 parts per million (ppm), and diets with Se supplementation, to achieve 0.07, 0.15, 0.3 and 1.7 ppm Se, for 5 weeks (first trial). Mass spectrometry, Western blotting and enzymatic assays were used to investigate bioavailability, protein levels and GPx activity in fresh frozen tissue (liver, ileum, plasma, muscle and feces) from the Se fed animals. Inorganic, organic and nanoelemental Se were all effectively incorporated into tissues. The high Se diet (1.7 ppm) resulted in the highest Se levels in all tissues and plasma, independent of the Se source. Interestingly, despite being ~11 to ~25 times less concentrated than the high Se, the lower Se diets (0.07; 0.15) resulted in comparably high Se levels in liver, ileum and plasma for all Se sources. GPx protein levels and enzyme activity were significantly increased by each diet, relative to control. We hypothesised that bacteria may be a vector for the conversion of nanoelemental Se, perhaps in exchange for S in sulphate metabolising bacteria. We therefore investigated Se incorporation from low sulphate diets and in GF mice. All forms of selenium were bioavailable and similarly significantly increased the antioxidant capability of GPx in the intestine and liver of GF mice and mice with sulphate free diets. Se from nanoelemental Se resulted in similar tissue levels to inorganic and organic sources in germ free mice. Thus, endogenous mechanisms, not dependent on bacteria, reduce nanoelemental Se to the metabolite selenide that is then converted to selenophosphate, synthesised to selenocysteine, and incorporated into selenoproteins. In particular, the similar efficacy of nanoelemental Se in comparison to organic Se in both trials is important in the view of the currently limited cheap sources of Se.

Abstract
The trace element selenium (Se) is a crucial element for many living organisms, including soil microorganisms, plants and animals, including humans. Generally, in Nature Se is taken up in the living cells of microorganisms, plants, animals and humans in several inorganic forms such as selenate, selenite, elemental Se and selenide. These forms are converted to organic forms by biological process, mostly as the two selenoamino acids selenocysteine (SeCys) and selenomethionine (SeMet). The biological systems of plants, animals and humans can fix these amino acids into Se-containing proteins by a modest replacement of methionine with SeMet. While the form SeCys is usually present in the active site of enzymes, which is essential for catalytic activity. Within human cells, organic forms of Se are significant for the accurate functioning of the immune and reproductive systems, the thyroid and the brain, and to enzyme activity within cells. Humans ingest Se through plant and animal foods rich in the element. The concentration of Se in foodstuffs depends on the presence of available forms of Se in soils and its uptake and accumulation by plants and herbivorous animals. Therefore, improving the availability of Se to plants is, therefore, a potential pathway to overcoming human Se deficiencies. Among these prospective pathways, the Se-biofortification of plants has already been established as a pioneering approach for producing Se-enriched agricultural products. To achieve this desirable aim of Se-biofortification, molecular breeding and genetic engineering in combination with novel agronomic and edaphic management approaches should be combined. This current review summarizes the roles, responses, prospects and mechanisms of Se in human nutrition. It also elaborates how biofortification is a plausible approach to resolving Se-deficiency in humans and other animals.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to show that some elements have a proven
antioxidative effect and are essential for the proper development and
functioning of the human body. The study also assessed the concentration of
selected elements and total antioxidant status (TAS) in a group of male
inhabitants of Białystok, Poland, who are professionally active in the metal
industry. The study group comprised 163 men aged 55–64 years. The concentration
of the analyzed elements was determined using flame (Zn and Cu) and
electrothermal (Se, Cd, and Pb) atomic absorption spectrometry.
Spectrophotometric test kits were used to assay the TAS and glutathione
reductase (GR) activity in serum. The results suggested the mean concentration
of Se in serum was 54.04 ± 12.10 μg/L, which was below the reference range. A
significant negative correlation was observed between the concentration of Se in
the serum and Pb and Cd concentrations in the whole blood of the studied men.
The concentrations of the other elements, antioxidant potential, and GR activity
were within the reference range. A statistically significant positive
correlation was observed between Pb and Cd, indicating combined exposure and a
considerable negative correlation between lead and selenium as well as between
lead and TAS. Selenium and TAS are likely to modify the adverse effects of Pb in
the bodies of the studied men. The results indicate that it is necessary to
constantly monitor men who are occupationally exposed to heavy metals, maintain
a healthy lifestyle, and introduce effective preventive measures at a local
level.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Selenium (Se) is an essential element for humans and animals. Rice is one of the most commonly consumed cereals in the world, so the agronomic biofortification of cereals with Se may be a good strategy to increase the levels of daily intake of Se by the population. This study evaluated the agronomic biofortification of rice genotypes with Se and its effects on grain nutritional quality. Five rates of Se (0, 10, 25, 50, and 100 g ha -1 ) were applied as selenate via the soil to three rice genotypes under field conditions. RESULTS Selenium concentrations in the leaves and polished grains increased linearly in response to Se application rates. A highly significant correlation was observed between the Se rates and the Se concentration in the leaves and grains, indicating high translocation of Se. The application of Se also increased the concentration of albumin, globulin, prolamin, and glutelin in polished grains. CONCLUSION Biofortifying rice genotypes using 25 g Se ha -1 could increase the average daily Se intake from 4.64 to 66 μg day-1 . Considering that the recommended daily intake of Se by adults is 55 μg day-1 , this agronomic strategy could contribute to alleviating widespread Se malnutrition. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Selenium (Se) is an essential micronutrient for human health, and its abundance and potential bioavailability in the soil are of increasing concern worldwide. To date, how total soil Se and its bioavailability would respond to human disturbance or future environmental change is not yet clear, and associated controlling factors remain incompletely understood. Here, we collected soil samples (0-15 cm) from different land use/land cover types, including active cropland, grassland, shrubland, and secondary forest, in a Se-enriched area of Guangxi, southwest China. Total Se concentration and its potential bioavailability, as estimated by phosphate extractability, were investigated. Total soil Se concentration (Setotal) for all samples ranged from 220 to 1820 μg kg-1, with an arithmetic average value of 676 ± 24 μg kg-1 (Mean ± SE, the same below). The concentration of phosphate extractable Se (Sephosphate) varied between 1 and 257 μg kg-1, with an arithmetic mean value of 79 ± 5 μg kg-1, accounting for on average 13 ± 1% of the Setotal. Among the four land use/land cover types, Setotal and Sephosphate were generally more enriched in the secondary forest than those in the grassland and cropland. The content of soil organic carbon (SOC) was the overriding edaphic factor controlling the abundance and potential bioavailability of Se in topsoils. In addition, climatic variables such as mean annual precipitation and mean annual temperature were also key factors affecting the abundance and potential bioavailability of soil Se. Our results suggest that changes in land use/land cover types may deeply influence Se biogeochemistry likely via alterations in soil properties, particularly SOC content.

Abstract
Selenium (Se) is considered a beneficial element in higher plants when provided at low concentrations. Recently, studies have unveiled the interactions between Se and ethylene metabolism throughout plant growth and development. However, despite the evidence that Se may provide longer shelf life in ethylene-sensitive flowers, its primary action on ethylene biosynthesis and cause-effect responses are still understated. In the present review, we discuss the likely action of Se on ethylene biosynthesis and its consequence on postharvest physiology of cut flowers. By combining Se chemical properties with a dissection of ethylene metabolism, we further highlighted both the potential use of Se solutions and their downstream responses. We believe that this report will provide the foundation for the hypothesis that Se plays a key role in the postharvest longevity of ethylene-sensitive flowers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Selenium (Se) is an essential element for mammals and its deficiency in the diet is a global problem. Plants accumulate Se and thus represent a major source of Se to consumers. Agronomic biofortification intends to enrich crops with Se in order to secure its adequate supply by people. SCOPE The goal of this review is to report the present knowledge of the distribution and processes of Se in soil and at the plant-soil interface, and of Se behaviour inside the plant in terms of biofortification. It aims to unravel the Se metabolic pathways that affect the nutritional value of edible plant products, various Se biofortification strategies in challenging environments, as well as the impact of Se-enriched food on human health. CONCLUSIONS Agronomic biofortification and breeding are prevalent strategies for battling Se deficiency. Future research addresses nanosized Se biofortification, crop enrichment with multiple micronutrients, microbial-integrated agronomic biofortification, and optimization of Se biofortification in adverse conditions. Biofortified food of superior nutritional quality may be created, enriched with healthy Se-compounds, as well as several other valuable phytochemicals. Whether such a food source might be used as nutritional intervention for recently emerged coronavirus infections is a relevant question that deserves investigation.

Abstract
Increasing the selenium (Se) concentration of staple crops by fertilization is a valuable pathway to increase Se in the human diet, thus preventing Se deficiency. A pot trial was set up to investigate whether the application of 3.33 µg kg-1 of Se (equivalent to 10 g ha-1) to wheat can be made more efficient by its co-application with macronutrient carriers, either to the soil or to the leaves. In the soil, Se was applied either on its own (selenate only) or as a granular, Se-enriched macronutrient fertilizer supplying nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium or sulfur. Selenium was also applied to leaves at head emergence with, or without, 2% w/v N fertilizers. With grain Se concentrations varying from 0.13-0.84 mg kg-1, soil application of selenate-only was 2-15 times more effective than granular Se-enriched macronutrient fertilizers in raising grain Se concentrations. Co-application of foliar Se with an N carrier doubled the Se concentration in wheat grains compared to the application of foliar Se on its own, the majority of which was in the highly bioavailable selenomethionine fraction. Results from this study demonstrate the possibility of improving the efficacy of Se fertilizers, which could enrich crops with Se without additional application costs in the field.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Selenium (Se) is a nutrient for animals and humans, and is considered beneficial to higher plants. Selenium concentrations are low in most soils, which can result in a lack of Se in plants, and consequently in human diets. Phytic acid (PA) is the main storage form of phosphorus in seeds, and it is able to form insoluble complexes with essential minerals in the monogastric gut. This study aimed to establish optimal levels of Se application to cowpea, with the aim of increasing Se concentrations. The efficiency of agronomic biofortification was evaluated by the application of seven levels of Se (0, 2.5, 5, 10, 20, 40, and 60 g ha-1 ) from two sources (selenate and selenite) to the soil under field conditions in 2016 and 2017. RESULTS Application of Se as selenate led to greater plant Se concentrations than application as selenite in both leaves and grains. Assuming human cowpea consumption of 54.2 g day-1 , Se application of 20 g ha-1 in 2016 or 10 g ha-1 in 2017 as selenate would have provided a suitable daily intake of Se (between 20 and 55 μg day-1 ) for humans. Phytic acid showed no direct response to Se application. CONCLUSION Selenate provides greater phytoavailability than selenite. The application of 10 g Se ha-1 of selenate to cowpea plants could provide sufficient seed Se to increase daily human intake by 13-14 μg d-1 . © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
The fungi Aureobasidium pullulans, Mortierella humilis, Trichoderma harzianum and Phoma glomerata were used to investigate the formation of selenium- and tellurium-containing nanoparticles during growth on selenium- and tellurium-containing media. Most organisms were able to grow on both selenium- and tellurium-containing media at concentrations of 1 mM resulting in extensive precipitation of elemental selenium and tellurium on fungal surfaces as observed by the red and black colour changes. Red or black deposits were confirmed as elemental selenium and tellurium, respectively. Selenium oxide and tellurium oxide were also found after growth of Trichoderma harzianum with 1 mM selenite and tellurite as well as the formation of elemental selenium and tellurium. The hyphal matrix provided nucleation sites for metalloid deposition with extracellular protein and extracellular polymeric substances localizing the resultant Se or Te nanoparticles. These findings are relevant to remedial treatments for selenium and tellurium and to novel approaches for selenium and tellurium biorecovery.

Abstract
Selenium is of special interest in different research fields due to its narrow range between beneficial and toxic effects. On a global scale, Se deficiency is more widespread. Biofortification measures have successfully been applied to specifically increase Se concentrations in food crops. Still not much is known about the behaviour and long-term fate of externally supplied Se. Over many years, natural but external selenate is regularly introduced into the soil-plant system via irrigation at our study sites in Punjab which makes it also an ideal natural analogue to investigate the long term effect of biofortification. For our study, we combined total and species specific analysis of Se in soil and plant material. Selenium is clearly enriched in all investigated topsoils (0-15 cm) with concentrations of 1.5-13.0 mg kg-1 despite similar background Se concentrations (0.5 ± 0.1 mg kg-1) below 15 cm depth. Irrigation is indicated to be the primary source of excess Se. Processes like Se species transformation, uptake by plants and plant material decomposition further influence both the Se speciation and extent of Se enrichment in the soils. The Se concentration in different plants and plant parts is alarmingly high showing concentrations of up to 738 mg kg-1 in wheat. Irrigation induced selenate can be considered as an easily available short term pool of Se for plants and thus strongly controls their total Se concentration and speciation. The long-term pool of Se in the topsoil mainly consists of selenite and organic Se species. These species are readily retained but still sufficiently mobile to be taken up by plants. The formation of elemental Se can be considered as a non-available Se pool and is thus, the major cause of Se immobilization and long-term enrichment of Se in the soils. Our study clearly shows that biofortification with selenate, despite its effectiveness, bears the risk of easily increasing Se levels in plants to toxic levels and producing food with less favourable inorganic Se species if not done with care. Excess selenate is either lost due to biomethylation or immobilized within the soil which has to be considered as highly negative from both an economic and ecological point of few.

Abstract
Selenium (Se) is an essential trace element for humans and other animals, yet approximately one billion people worldwide suffer from Se deficiency. Rice is a staple food for over half of the world's population that is a major dietary source of Se. In paddy soils, rice roots mainly take up selenite. Se speciation analysis indicated that most of the selenite absorbed by rice is predominantly transformed into selenomethinone (SeMet) and retained in roots. However, the mechanism by which SeMet is transported in plants remains largely unknown. In this study, SeMet uptake was found to be an energy-dependent symport process involving H+ transport, with neutral amino acids strongly inhibiting SeMet uptake. We further revealed that NRT1.1B, a member of rice peptide transporter (PTR) family which plays an important role in nitrate uptake and transport in rice, displays SeMet transport activity in yeast and Xenopus oocyte. The uptake rate of SeMet in the roots and its accumulation rate in the shoots of nrt1.1b mutant were significantly repressed. Conversely, the overexpression of NRT1.1B in rice significantly promoted SeMet translocation from roots to shoots, resulting in increased Se concentrations in shoots and rice grains. With vascular-specific expression of NRT1.1B, the grain Se concentration was 1.83-fold higher than that of wild type. These results strongly demonstrate that NRT1.1B holds great potential for the improvement of Se concentrations in grains by facilitating SeMet translocation, and the findings provide novel insight into breeding of Se-enriched rice varieties.

Abstract
The production of bread with addition of selenium-enriched soya malt was studied. Processing of this soya malt included soaking of the soya beans in the solution of hydroselenite with concentration 1.5 mg Se/L (20 μg of Se per 1 g of soya beans), then 4 days of beans germination at 20 °C, drying at 50 °C until moisture content 8%, separation from the sprouts and grinding. The soya malt was a powder containing 15-18 μg of Se in 1 g. The accumulated selenium was mainly in the protein fraction of soya malt. Addition of selenium-enriched soya malt to leaven intensified activity of yeasts and lactic acid bacteria. The quality of the wheat bread with selenium-enriched soya malt was better than that of the bread in control. The enriched bread had specific pleasant smell and soft texture. The daily intake of 277 g of bread with the selenium-enriched soya malt, which is added in quantity of 1.0-1.75% to mass of plain flour, ensures the consumption of 30-50% of selenium recommended daily allowance for 17 million population of the northern and northwestern Ukraine.

Abstract
To clarify the leaching risk of selenium (Se) in agricultural soils, a laboratory column experiment was conducted to study the characteristics of leaching and chemical fractions of Se in three different soils treated with different levels of exogenous selenate under simulated local rainfall. Results demonstrated that the Se concentration in leachates of all tested soils decreased rapidly at the beginning of leaching and slowly decreased thereafter. After leaching, Se concentrations in leachates of all tested soils at 1, 3, and 6 mg/kg exogenous Se concentrations were 0.06-0.24, 0.25-0.84, and 0.60-1.65 mg/L, respectively, which exceeded the standard limit of the Chinese Environmental Quality Standards for Groundwater (<0.01 mg/L) (GB/T 14848-2017). The cumulative leached Se amount accounted for 51.27-86.22% of the total Se. Those results indicated the high risk of Se leaching in the tested soils. The Elovich model could better describe Se leaching processes in krasnozem, while the leaching processes of Se in black soil and loess soil accorded with the power function model. Se mainly existed in soluble fraction (61.33-81.05%) before leaching and residual fraction (48.91-68.04%) after leaching. The soluble and exchangeable Se fractions were the main contributors of Se in leachates. In addition, the parameters of the Uts and IR values could well describe the distribution of Se fractions in soil during leaching. In general, more attention should be placed on the assessment of Se leaching in soil.

Abstract
The effect of genotype and selenium foliar biofortification in the form of an aqueous solution of sodium selenate on the content of total carotenoids, vitamin C, total polyphenols and selenium content in the tomato fruits was studied. Field experiment was held in the Botanical garden of the Slovak University of Agriculture in 2016. Seven determinant varieties of tomato in the two variants were observed. The results of experiments show that treatment of plants with the dose of Se concentration (150 g Se.ha-1) at the flowering stage significantly increased the total Se content in the in tomato fruits. Foliar application of selenium had a positive effect on the increase of total polyphenol. The influence of Se biofortification on the content of vitamin C and carotenoids was not detected. Selenium foliar fertilization in dosage 150 g.ha-1 is suitable way of tomato fruits enriching in polyphenols, without negative effect on other antioxidants content.

Abstract
The biogeochemistry of mercury (Hg) in rice-paddy soil systems raises concerns, given that (1) the redox potential in paddy soil favors Hg methylation and (2) rice plants have a strong ability to accumulate methylmercury (MeHg), making rice an important source for MeHg exposure to humans. Therefore, all factors affecting the behavior of Hg in rice-paddy soils might impact Hg accumulation in rice, with its subsequent potential risks. As a typical wetland, paddy soils are managed by humans and affected by anthropogenic activities, such as agronomic measures, which would impact soil properties and thus Hg biogeochemistry. In this paper, we reviewed recent advances in the effects of farming activities including water management, fertilizer application and rotation on Hg biogeochemistry, trying to elucidate the factors controlling Hg behavior and thus the ecological risks in rice-paddy soil systems. This review might provide new thoughts on Hg remediation and suggest avenues for further studies.

Abstract
Selenium plays an important, but vastly neglected role in human nutrition with a narrow gap between dietary deficiency and toxicity. For a potential biofortification of food with Se, as well as for toxicity-risk assessment in sites contaminated by Se, modelling of local and global Se cycling is essential. As bioavailability of Se for rice plants depends on the speciation of Se and the resulting interactions with mineral surfaces as well as the interaction with Se uptake mechanisms in plants, resulting plant Se content is complex to model. Unfortunately, simple experimental models to estimate Se uptake into plants from substrates have been lacking. Therefore, a mass balance of Se transfer between lithosphere (represented by kaolinite), hydrosphere (represented by a controlled nutrient solution), and biosphere (represented by rice plants) has been established. In a controlled, closed, lab-scale system, rice plants were grown hydroponically in nutrient solution supplemented with 0–10 000 μg L-1 Se of either selenate or selenite. Furthermore, in a series of batch experiments, adsorption and desorption were studied for selenate and selenite in competition with each of the major nutrient oxy-anions, nitrate, sulfate and phosphate. In a third step, the hydroponical plants experiments were coupled with sorption experiments to study synergy effects. These data were used to develop a mass balance fitting model of Se uptake and partitioning. Adsorption was well-described by Langmuir isotherms, despite competing anions, however, a certain percentage of Se always remained bio-unavailable to the plant. Uptake of selenate or selenite by transporters into the rice plant was fitted with the non-time differentiated Michaelis-Menten equation. Subsequent sequestration of Se to the shoot was better described using a substrate-inhibited variation of the Michaelis-Menten equation. These fitted parameters were then integrated into a mass balance model of Se transfer.

Abstract
Selenium (Se) is an important micronutrient and essential trace element for both humans and animals, which exist in the environment ubiquitously. Selenium deficiency is an important issue worldwide, with various reported cases of its deficiency. Low selenium contents in some specific terrestrial environments have resulted in its deficiency in humans. However, high levels of selenium in the geochemical environment may have harmful influences and can cause a severe toxicity to living things. Due to its extremely narrow deficiency and toxicity limits, selenium is becoming a serious matter of discussion for the scientists who deals with selenium-related environmental and health issues. Based on available relevant literature, this review provides a comprehensive data about Se sources, levels, production and factors affecting selenium bioavailability/speciation in soil, characteristics of Se, biogeochemical cycling, deficiency and toxicity, and its environmental transformation to know the Se distribution in the environment. Further research should focus on thoroughly understanding the concentration, speciation, Se cycling in the environment and food chain to effectively utilize Se resources, remediate Se deficiency/toxicity, and evaluate the Se states and eco-effects on human health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Biofortification of food crops has been used to increase the intake of Se in the human diet, even though this may change the concentration of other elements and modify the nutritional properties of the enriched food. Selenium biofortification programs should include routine assessment of the overall mineral composition of enriched plants. RESULTS Laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA ICP-MS) was used for the assessment of mineral composition of table olives. Olive trees were fertilized with sodium selenate before flowering. At harvest, the edible parts of drupes proved to be significantly enriched in Se, delivering 6.1 μg g-1 (39% of the RDA for five olives). Such enrichment was followed by significant changes in the concentrations of B, Mg, K, Cr, Mn, Fe and Cu in edible parts, which are discussed for their impact on food quality. CONCLUSION The biofortification of olive plants has allowed the enrichment of fruits with selenium. Enrichment with selenium has caused an increase in the concentration of other elements, which can change the nutritional quality of the drupes. The analytical technique used well as a valuable tool for routinely determining the chemical composition of all fruit parts. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Concurrent selenium and iodine deficiencies are widespread, in both developing and developed countries. Salt iodisation is insufficient to ensure global iodine adequacy, with an estimated one-third of humanity at risk of hypothyroidism and associated iodine deficiency disorders (IDD). Agronomic biofortification of food crops, especially staples such as cereals, which are consumed widely, may be an effective component of a food system strategy to reduce selenium and iodine malnutrition. Iodine and selenium are needed in the optimum intake range for thyroid health, hence joint biofortification makes sense for areas deficient in both. Foliar application is recommended as the most effective, efficient, least wasteful method for selenium and iodine biofortification. Currently, selenium is easier to increase in grain, fruit, and storage roots by this method, being more phloem mobile than iodine. Nevertheless, strategic timing (around heading is usually best), use of surfactants and co-application with potassium nitrate can increase the effectiveness of foliar iodine biofortification. More research is needed on iodine transporters and iodine volatilisation in plants, bioavailability of iodine in biofortified plant products, and roles for nano selenium and iodine in biofortification. For adoption, farmers need an incentive such as access to a premium functional food market, a subsidy or increased grain yield resulting from possible synergies with co-applied fertilisers, enhancers, fungicides, and insecticides. Further research is needed to inform these aspects of foliar agronomic biofortification.

Abstract
This paper reviewed the Se in the environment (including total Se in soil, water, plants, and food), the daily Se intake and Se content in human hair were also examined to elucidate Se distribution in the environment and its effects on human health in China. Approximately 51% of China is Se deficiency in soil, compared with 72% in the survey conducted in 1989. Low Se concentrations in soil, water, plants, human diet and thus human hair were found in most areas of China. The only significant difference was observed between Se-rich and Se-excessive areas for Se contents in water, staple cereal, vegetables, fruits, and animal-based food, no remarkable contrast was found among other areas (p>0.05). This study also demonstrated that 39-61% of Chinese residents have lower daily Se intakes according to WHO/FAO recommended value (26-34μg/day). Further studies should focus on thoroughly understanding the concentration, speciation, and distribution of Se in the environment and food chain to successfully utilize Se resources, remediate Se deficiency, and assess the Se states and eco-effects on human health.
