Abstract
There are significant gaps in understanding the extent of the damage caused by COVID-19, with few publications examining its link to contrast sensitivity function (CSF). The aim of the present study was to evaluate CSF at low, medium, and high spatial frequencies in individuals with and without a history of COVID-19. Thirty adults, both male and female, aged between 18 and 49 years, participated in the study, 15 with a history of COVID-19 and 15 without. CSF was measured using Metropsis software (version 11) and vertical sine-wave gratings with spatial frequencies ranging from 0.2 to 19.8 cycles per degree (cpd). The results indicated COVID-19-related changes in CSF at spatial frequencies of 6.1 (U=36.00; P=0.003; r=-0.55), 13.2 (U=29.00; P=0.001; r=-0.61), 15.9 (U=17.00; P=0.001; r=-0.70), and 19.8 cpd (U=13.00; P=0.001; r=-0.73). The observed decrease in CSF within specific spatial frequency bands suggested that the visual system of individuals exposed to COVID-19 required higher contrast levels to detect high spatial frequencies. This psychophysical finding indicated that COVID-19 altered the functioning of the visual system and likely affected the neural mechanisms responsible for processing high spatial frequencies.

Abstract
The presence of both MDR-TB and COVID-19 complicates diagnosis and treatment, as their symptoms can overlap, resulting in possible delays in receiving the appropriate care. This study aimed to investigate whether COVID-19 plays a role in the initiation or progression of latent or current tuberculosis (TB) infection, especially MDR-TB, through immunosuppression or lung injury. On May 19, 2022, a retired black African 40-year-old woman was admitted to the emergency room. She had a history of persistent cough, fever, muscle weakness, and weight loss. Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) confirmed the presence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), indicating a positive COVID-19 diagnosis. GeneXpert MTB/RIF identified Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) and detected rifampicin resistance, confirming MDR-TB. An oral daily antituberculosis regimen consisting of 4 months of kanamycin 1220 mg, moxifloxacin 800 mg, prothionamide 750 mg, clofazimine 100 mg, pyrazinamide 1200 mg, high-dose isoniazid (HH) 600 mg, ethambutol 1200 mg, and for 5 months moxifloxacin 800 mg, clofazimine 100 mg, pyrazinamide 1200 mg, and ethambutol 1200 mg. She received ≈ 5000 IU of low-molecular-weight heparin (80 IU/kg for her 61 kg body weight) every 12 h to prevent prothrombotic episodes.

Abstract
Background/Objectives: To provide insight into populations at higher risk of COVID-19-related retinal vascular occlusion, we identified the baseline characteristics of COVID-19 patients and vaccine recipients who developed this condition by conducting a systematic review to summarize the findings and evaluate the current knowledge on this subject. Methods: An electronic search on the PubMed and Scopus databases was performed for relevant case reports or series regarding retinal vascular occlusion in patients with past or present COVID-19 infection or SARS-CoV-2 immunization. This study was conducted using a pre-determined protocol following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Results: A total of 34 studies were enrolled in this systematic review. A total of 21 patients (14 males, 66.7%) have been diagnosed with COVID-19 related retinal vein occlusion (RVO, mean age = 41.9 ± 10.3 years), and 15 patients (12 males, 80%) have been diagnosed with retinal artery occlusion (RAO, mean age = 56.9 ± 13.2 years). The time to RVO since COVID-19 infection or SARS-CoV-2 immunization ranged from 8 h to 51 days (mean = 12.3 ± 15.7 days), while the time to RAO ranged from 2 to 40 days (mean = 14.9 ± 10.8 days). Fifteen out of the twenty-one patients (71.4%) with RVO had a significant improvement in visual acuity after the resolution of symptoms while eight out of the fifteen patients (53.3%) with RAO did not show improvement. Conclusions: COVID-19 seems to play a significant role in the pathogenesis of vascular occlusion, as it is suggested to increase the risk of thromboembolic episodes. However, the pathophysiologic mechanisms have not been fully elucidated, and further studies are expected to shed light on this phenomenon.

Abstract
With the consistent occurrence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection, the prevalence of various ocular complications has increased over time. SARS-CoV-2 infection has been shown to have neurotropism and therefore to lead to not only peripheral inflammatory responses but also neuroinflammation. Because the receptor for SARS-CoV-2, angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), can be found in many intraocular tissues, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) may also contribute to persistent intraocular neuroinflammation, microcirculation dysfunction and ocular symptoms. Increased awareness of neuroinflammation and future research on interventional strategies for SARS-CoV-2 infection are important for improving long-term outcomes, reducing disease burden, and improving quality of life. Therefore, the aim of this review is to focus on SARS-CoV-2 infection and intraocular neuroinflammation and to discuss current evidence and future perspectives, especially possible connections between conditions and potential treatment strategies.

Abstract
PURPOSE To present a presumed case of non-paraneoplastic autoimmune retinopathy (nPAIR) following COVID-19 in a healthy woman. METHODS A single case was evaluated and followed for 32 months. RESULTS A healthy 32-year-old woman presented with photopsia and paracentral scotoma (OU) after a recent COVID-19 infection. Past medical history and family history were unremarkable. Her visual acuity was normal (OU). Retinal atrophy, mild disc pallor, and foveal reflex attenuation were observed (OU). Optical coherence tomography (OCT) scans showed outer nuclear layer thinning and ellipsoid zone disruption (OU). The visual field test showed blind spot enlargement and arcuate scotomas (OU). Uveitis workup and underlying malignancy investigations were negative. A diagnosis of nPAIR was presumed. At the time, she refused therapy, and 20 months later, her visual acuity was stable, but there were progressive retinal atrophic changes and visual field constriction. After initiation of glucocorticoids and immunosuppressive therapy, flashing lights completely disappeared, her visual field was stabilized without progression, and OCT scans showed partial recovery of ellipsoid zone. CONCLUSION SARS-CoV-2 infection may be a trigger for nPAIR in susceptible individuals, but further research is needed to determine this association.

Abstract
Infectious diseases may lead to ocular complications including uveitis, an ocular inflammatory condition with potentially sight-threatening sequelae, and conjunctivitis, inflammation of the conjunctiva. Emerging infectious pathogens with known ocular findings include Ebola virus, Zika virus, Avian influenza virus, Nipah virus, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronaviruses, and Dengue virus. Re-emerging pathogens with ocular findings include Toxoplasma gondii and Plasmodium species that lead to malaria. The concept of One Health involves a collaborative and interdisciplinary approach to achieve optimal health outcomes by combining human, animal, and environmental health factors. This approach examines the interconnected and often complex human-pathogen-intermediate host interactions in infectious diseases that may also result in ocular disease, including uveitis and conjunctivitis. Through a comprehensive review of the literature, we review the ophthalmic findings of emerging infectious diseases, pathogenesis, and One Health perspectives that provide further insight into the disease state. While eye care providers and vision researchers may often focus on key local aspects of disease process and management, additional perspective on host-pathogen-reservoir life cycles and transmission considerations, including environmental factors, may offer greater insight to improve outcomes for affected individuals and stakeholders.

Abstract
PURPOSE This review aimed to evaluate the significance of assessing radial peripheral capillary (RPC) network parameters by optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) in patients with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection confirmed by polymerase chain reaction. METHODS A literature search was conducted in the PubMed database to select high-quality reviews and original articles on the use of OCTA for visualizing the RPC network and calculating RPC parameters. RESULTS The study revealed that systemic hypoxia, hypercoagulable state, and inflammation affect the RPC network in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Reduced RPC parameters were observed early in the course of SARS-CoV-2 infection and after several months of follow-up. Additionally, there was a correlation between reduced RPC parameters and subsequent thinning of the retinal nerve fiber layer. CONCLUSIONS The OCTA examination of the retina and optic disc should be considered in patients with a history of COVID-19 to assess the impact of systemic hypoxia and inflammation on ocular function. Follow-up assessment of these patients is also necessary to understand the potential consequences of ischemia affecting the optic nerve, retina, and choroid.

Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic, caused by SARS-CoV-2, has significantly impacted various organ systems, including the eyes. Initially considered a primarily respiratory disease, it is now evident that COVID-19 can induce a range of ocular symptoms. Recognizing these ocular manifestations is crucial for eye care practitioners as they can serve as early indicators of the disease. This review consolidates current evidence on the ocular effects of COVID-19, identifying manifestations such as conjunctivitis, scleritis, uveitis, and retinopathy. The increasing prevalence of these symptoms highlights the importance of thorough eye examinations and detailed patient histories in COVID-19 cases. Potential routes of viral entry into ocular tissues and the underlying mechanisms, including direct infection, immune responses, and vascular involvement, are explored. Additionally, this review addresses ocular side effects associated with COVID-19 vaccines, such as corneal graft rejection, uveitis, and retinal issues. These findings emphasize the need for ongoing surveillance and research to ensure vaccine safety.

Abstract
The advent of the new coronavirus, leading to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, has presented a substantial worldwide health hazard since its inception in the latter part of 2019. The severity of the current pandemic is exacerbated by the occurrence of re-infection or co-infection with SARS-CoV-2. Hence, comprehending the molecular process underlying the pathophysiology of sepsis and discerning possible molecular targets for therapeutic intervention holds significant importance. For the first time, 31 metabolites were tentatively identified by GC-MS analysis from Alpinia malaccensis. On the other hand, five phenolic compounds were identified and quantified from the plant in HPLC-DAD analysis, including (-) epicatechin, rutin hydrate, rosmarinic acid, quercetin, and kaempferol. Nine GC-MS and five HPLC-identified metabolites had shown interactions with 45 and 30 COVID-19-associated human proteins, respectively. Among the proteins, PARP1, FN1, PRKCA, EGFR, ALDH2, AKR1C3, AHR, and IKBKB have been found as potential therapeutic targets to mitigate SARS-CoV-2 infection. KEGG pathway analysis also showed a strong association of FN1, EGFR, and IKBKB genes with SARS-CoV-2 viral replication and cytokine overexpression due to viral infection. Protein-protein interaction (PPI) analysis also showed that TP53, MMP9, FN1, EGFR, and NOS2 proteins are highly related to the genes involved in COVID-19 comorbidity. These proteins showed interaction with the plant phytoconstituents as well. As the study offers a robust network-based procedure for identifying biomolecules relevant to COVID-19 disease, A. malaccensis could be a good source of effective therapeutic agents against COVID-19 and related viral diseases.

Abstract
Background and Aim Although reverse zoonotic transmission events from humans to domestic cats have been described, there is currently little evidence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) circulation in stray cats. Due to the evidence of natural and experimental infections in cats and the capacity to disseminate the virus among them, this study aimed to identify the SARS-CoV-2 antigen in stray cats from the Federal University of Sergipe in Brazil. Materials and Methods One hundred twenty six stray cats from the university were screened for SARS-CoV-2 antigens by random sampling. Throat swab samples were tested for the virus using rapid antigen detection tests. Results Of the 126 animals tested, 30 (23.60%) were positive for SARS-CoV-2 antigens. To our knowledge, for the first time, this study detected the SARS-CoV-2 antigen in stray cats and confirmed the presence of SARS-CoV-2 infections in Brazil's stray cat population. Conclusion The detection of SARS-CoV-2 in stray cats poses a risk for infected and healthy animals and possibly for humans who attend the university daily. As a limitation of the study, the small sample size necessitates caution when interpreting the results. This underscores the need for further research in this area to help control diseases in stray animals during potential pandemics. This highlights the need for monitoring and controlling the spread of the virus in stray animal populations.

Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the risk of uveitis, one of the most common ocular manifestations of COVID-19, in individuals with a history of uveitis and COVID-19 infection while discriminating the effects of COVID-19 infection and vaccinations. We analyzed nationwide data from 235,228 individuals with a history of uveitis prior to COVID-19 infection and evaluated incidences and hazard ratios (HRs) of post-COVID-19 uveitis for different post-infection periods, including early- (within 30 days) and delayed-onset ones. The cumulative incidences of post-infection uveitis at 3, 6, and 12 months were calculated as 8.5%, 11.8%, and 14.0%, respectively. The HR of post-COVID-19 uveitis was 1.21 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.07-1.37) and was particularly higher in the early-onset period (1.42, 95% CI: 1.24-1.61). Vaccinated individuals showed a modestly elevated risk of uveitis relative to pre-infection, while unvaccinated ones exhibited substantially higher risks in the early-onset period: the HR of post-infection uveitis before vaccination was 3.61 (95% CI: 1.35-9.66), whereas after vaccination, it was 1.21 (95% CI: 1.05-1.39). COVID-19 infection was associated with a higher risk of uveitis, which was mitigated by vaccination. Vigilance in the monitoring of uveitis is warranted for recently COVID-19-infected individuals with a history of uveitis, particularly unvaccinated individuals.

Abstract
The advent of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has affected the incidence and course of various diseases and numerous studies have investigated ocular involvement associated with COVID-19 and corresponding vaccines. In this study, we compared the incidence of multiple evanescent white dot syndrome (MEWDS) before and during the COVID-19 pandemic at a single center in Korea and analyzed the demographic and clinical features of patients with MEWDS presenting during the COVID-19 pandemic. We categorized patients with MEWDS into two groups according to date of diagnosis. Pre-COVID19 group included patients diagnosed during the pre-pandemic period (between March 11, 2017, and March 10, 2020), whereas post-COVID19 group included patients diagnosed during the pandemic period (between March 11, 2020, and March 10, 2023). 6 and 12 patients were included in pre-COVID19 group and post-COVID19 group, respectively. Among all hospital visits during the pre-pandemic and pandemic periods, 0.011% and 0.030% were due to MEWDS, indicating a significant increase during the pandemic (p = 0.029, B = 2.756). The annual incidence of patients with MEWDS in 2017-2022 were 0.73, 0.75, 0.78, 1.32, 2.49, and 2.07 per 10,000 population, respectively, corresponding to a significant increase (p = 0.039, B = 1.316). Our results imply that the incidence and manifestation of MEWDS are likely to become more diverse in the COVID-19 pandemic era.

Abstract
The prone position reduces mortality in severe cases of COVID-19 with acute respiratory distress syndrome. However, visual loss and changes to the peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (p-RNFL) and the macular ganglion cell layer and inner plexiform layer (m-GCIPL) have occurred in patients undergoing surgery in the prone position. Moreover, COVID-19-related eye problems have been reported. This study compared the p-RNFL and m-GCIPL thicknesses of COVID-19 patients who were placed in the prone position with patients who were not. This prospective longitudinal and case-control study investigated 15 COVID-19 patients placed in the prone position (the "Prone Group"), 23 COVID-19 patients not in the prone position (the "Non-Prone Group"), and 23 healthy, non-COVID individuals without ocular disease or systemic conditions (the "Control Group"). The p-RNFL and m-GCIPL thicknesses of the COVID-19 patients were measured at 1, 3, and 6 months and compared within and between groups. The result showed that the Prone and Non-Prone Groups had no significant differences in their p-RNFL thicknesses at the 3 follow-ups. However, the m-GCIPL analysis revealed significant differences in the inferior sector of the Non-Prone Group between months 1 and 3 (mean difference, 0.74 μm; P = 0.009). The p-RNFL analysis showed a significantly greater thickness at 6 months for the superior sector of the Non-Prone Group (131.61 ± 12.08 μm) than for the Prone Group (118.87 ± 18.21 μm; P = 0.039). The m-GCIPL analysis revealed that the inferior sector was significantly thinner in the Non-Prone Group than in the Control Group (at 1 month 80.57 ± 4.60 versus 83.87 ± 5.43 μm; P = 0.031 and at 6 months 80.48 ± 3.96 versus 83.87 ± 5.43 μm; P = 0.044). In conclusion, the prone position in COVID-19 patients can lead to early loss of p-RNFL thickness due to rising intraocular pressure, which is independent of the timing of prone positioning. Consequently, there is no increase in COVID-19 patients' morbidity burden.

Abstract
Ophthalmic manifestations have recently been observed in acute and post-acute complications of COVID-19 caused by SARS-CoV-2 infection. Our precious study has shown that host RNA editing is linked to RNA viral infection, yet ocular adenosine to inosine (A-to-I) RNA editing during SARS-CoV-2 infection remains uninvestigated in COVID-19. Herein we used an epitranscriptomic pipeline to analyze 37 samples and investigate A-to-I editing associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection, in five ocular tissue types including the conjunctiva, limbus, cornea, sclera, and retinal organoids. Our results revealed dramatically altered A-to-I RNA editing across the five ocular tissues. Notably, the transcriptome-wide average level of RNA editing was increased in the cornea but generally decreased in the other four ocular tissues. Functional enrichment analysis showed that differential RNA editing (DRE) was mainly in genes related to ubiquitin-dependent protein catabolic process, transcriptional regulation, and RNA splicing. In addition to tissue-specific RNA editing found in each tissue, common RNA editing was observed across different tissues, especially in the innate antiviral immune gene MAVS and the E3 ubiquitin-protein ligase MDM2. Analysis in retinal organoids further revealed highly dynamic RNA editing alterations over time during SARS-CoV-2 infection. Our study thus suggested the potential role played by RNA editing in ophthalmic manifestations of COVID-19, and highlighted its potential transcriptome impact, especially on innate immunity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is responsible for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), a complex and multifaceted illness. COVID-19 is associated with various ocular manifestations including conjunctivitis, retinal vein occlusion and optic neuritis. However, the case of Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada (VKH) disease associated with SARS-CoV-2 is infrequent, and the specific association is still unclear. CASE PRESENTATION In the present study, a 35-year-old female patient without any significant medical history presented with 1 week of bilateral blurred vision, occurring 2 weeks after a clinical course of COVID-19. Upon examination, both eyes exhibited bullous serous retinal detachments. She was diagnosed with incomplete VKH disease. Early diagnosis and treatment of VKH disease are essential for the visual prognosis of this aggressive disease. In this particular patient, ocular inflammatory signs and visual acuity improved via corticosteroid therapy. It is worth noting that the occurrence of VKH disease associated with SARS-CoV-2 is uncommon, and the specific connection between the two remains unknown. We review and summarize the clinical characteristics of VKH disease following SARS-CoV-2 infection, and discuss the potential mechanisms that may explain this phenomenon, based on similar studies previously reported. CONCLUSION Despite the unclear causality, it is important for ophthalmologists and physicians to be recognizant of the possible association between VKH disease and COVID-19. SARS-CoV-2 may play a potential immunological triggering role in VKH disease. However, further in-depth research is necessary to investigate the clinical and epidemiological features, as well as the underlying mechanisms of this association.

Abstract
Purpose To investigate ophthalmic manifestations in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients admitted to a designated COVID-19 center in Northern India during the period from April 13, 2020, to April 13, 2022. This aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of ocular involvement in the context of the pandemic. Methods This is a hospital-based prospective observational study. All COVID-19-positive (reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction positive - via pharyngeal and nasal swabs) patients, who were admitted to our hospital, were included in the study. Upon receiving ophthalmology referrals, patients were seen in the COVID-19 ward, with data collected on demographic distribution, presenting ocular symptoms, and specific ocular findings. Results Out of 3278 patients admitted to our center, 287 developed ocular symptoms. The study revealed a mean age of 63.8 ± 13.9 years, with males constituting 61.3% of the cases. The mean logMAR best-corrected visual acuity was found to be 0.30 ± 0.60. The mean duration between COVID-19 diagnosis and development of the first ophthalmic symptom was 10.4 ± 9.8 days. The predominant ocular symptoms included redness, discharge, and watering. Anterior segment manifestations were predominant, with conjunctivitis being the most prevalent ocular pathology (74.21%), followed by episcleritis (9.41%) and subconjunctival hemorrhage (7.31%). Conjunctivitis presented bilaterally in 41.5% of these patients, emphasizing its significance in the spectrum of COVID-19 ocular manifestations. Conclusions This research contributes substantial evidence regarding ophthalmic manifestations in COVID-19 patients. Ophthalmologists should remain vigilant, considering the potential for ocular symptoms to precede respiratory manifestations. The study emphasizes the need for comprehensive patient assessments and preventive measures in ophthalmic practices.

Abstract
Purpose To evaluate the possibility of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) transmission through the eyes, particularly through the ocular surface and conjunctival route, as well as the positivity of conjunctival swab test. Methods A narrative review was conducted to assess the possibility of COVID-19 transmission and the role of conjunctival swabs in diagnosing COVID-19 patients. Several studies were analyzed to compare the positivity rates and sensitivities of conjunctival swabs versus nasopharyngeal swabs. Results Despite the fact that respiratory droplets are the major route of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 transmission, the eyes can potentially serve as an active (via tears) or passive route (via the nasolacrimal duct) of infection. Besides, conjunctival swabs exhibited a low positive rate and sensitivity for detecting COVID-19 compared to nasopharyngeal swabs. While nasopharyngeal swabs typically showed positivity rates between 60% and 100%, conjunctival swabs ranged from showing no detectable evidence to a 57% positivity rate. Conclusions Despite the low transmission rate through the eyes, thorough consideration is necessary as ocular transmission cannot be entirely ruled out. Further research and vigilance are warranted to better understand and mitigate potential ocular routes of COVID-19 transmission.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, has had far-reaching implications beyond the respiratory system. Mounting evidence suggests that COVID-19 can impact various organ systems, including the eyes. This study aimed to elucidate the prevalence, characteristics, and clinical implications of ophthalmic manifestations in patients diagnosed with COVID-19. METHODS This retrospective study analyzed data from electronic medical records of adult patients hospitalized with COVID-19 between March 1, 2020, and December 31, 2020, at a large tertiary academic medical center. Ophthalmic manifestations, including conjunctivitis, dry eye symptoms, ocular pain, epiphora, ocular redness, and visual disturbances, were identified and examined for their prevalence, onset, duration, and associations with COVID-19 severity and systemic symptoms. RESULTS Among 342 patients included in the study, 106 (31.0%) experienced at least one ophthalmic manifestation during their COVID-19 illness. Conjunctivitis was the most common manifestation in 62 patients (18.1%), followed by dry eye symptoms in 38 patients (11.1%), ocular pain/discomfort in 27 patients (7.9%), epiphora in 19 patients (5.6%), ocular redness in 14 patients (4.1%), and visual disturbances in nine patients (2.6%). Ophthalmic manifestations were significantly associated with severe COVID-19 illness (42.9% vs. 26.7%, p = 0.003) and the presence of systemic symptoms such as fever, cough, and dyspnea. The median time of onset was six days, and the median duration was 10 days. CONCLUSIONS Ophthalmic manifestations are prevalent in COVID-19 patients, particularly in those with severe illness and systemic symptoms. The study highlights the importance of recognizing and managing ocular symptoms in affected individuals and underscores the multifaceted nature of COVID-19, necessitating interdisciplinary collaboration for comprehensive patient care.

Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic has sparked a surge in research on microbiology and virology, shedding light on overlooked aspects such as the infection of bacteria by RNA virions in the animal microbiome. Studies reveal a decrease in beneficial gut bacteria during COVID-19, indicating a significant interaction between SARS-CoV-2 and the human microbiome. However, determining the origins of the virus remains complex, with observed phenomena such as species jumps adding layers to the narrative. Prokaryotic cells play a crucial role in the disease's pathogenesis and transmission. Analyzing previous studies highlights intricate interactions from clinical manifestations to the use of the nitrogen isotope test. Drawing parallels with the history of the Poliovirus underscores the need to prioritize investigations into prokaryotic cells hosting RNA viruses.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE It has been suggested that diseases that may cause visual evoked potential abnormality, such as optic neuritis, may be associated with the coronavirus disease 2019. This study aimed to find out whether there are visual evoked potential abnormalities in coronavirus disease 2019 patients using pattern reversal visual evoked potential and flash visual evoked potential. METHODS Patients with a history of coronavirus disease 2019 (coronavirus disease 2019 patients) and controls were included in this prospective case-control study. This study was conducted in the Clinical Neurophysiology Laboratory of Adana City Training and Research Hospital. Individuals without visual impairment were included. Coronavirus disease 2019 patients were required to have clinical features consistent with previous acute infection and a positive nose swab polymerase chain reaction test. Visual evoked potential was applied to coronavirus disease 2019 patients between July 2020 and July 2021. Controls consisted of patients without a history of chronic disease who underwent a visual evoked potential study between June 2017 and June 2018 due to headache or dizziness. Pattern reversal visual evoked potential and flash visual evoked potential were applied to all participants. N75, P100, and N135 waves obtained from pattern reversal visual evoked potential and P1, N1, P2, N2, P3, and N3 waves obtained from flash visual evoked potential were analyzed. RESULTS A total of 44 coronavirus disease 2019 patients and 40 controls were included in the study. Age and gender were not different between the two groups. Pattern reversal visual evoked potential parameters were not different between the two groups. Right P2 latency was 114.4±21.1 and 105.5±14.7 ms in coronavirus disease 2019 patients and controls, respectively (p=0.031). Patients with P100 and P2 wave abnormalities were 6 (13.6%) and 13 (29.6%), respectively. CONCLUSION This study showed that there may be visual evoked potential abnormalities in coronavirus disease 2019 patients.

Abstract
PURPOSE Coronavirus disease 2019 is a disease caused by the novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2. The double-positive of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 and transmembrane protease serine type 2 have a higher risk of being infected by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2. The susceptibility of coronavirus disease 2019 in patients with chronic diseases, especially in different tissues of ocular hypertension eyes like glaucoma, is not yet known. METHODS An ocular hypertension model was established by laser photocoagulation in rhesus monkeys. The expression of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 and transmembrane protease serine type 2 in three ocular hypertension eyes and the three control eyes were analyzed using immunofluorescence. RESULTS No difference was observed between ocular hypertension and control eyes in the expression of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 and transmembrane protease serine type 2 in the conjunctival epithelium, corneal epithelium, and ciliary muscle. In ocular hypertension eyes and control eyes, angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 and transmembrane protease serine type 2 expression were both observed in the retina. Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 staining of retinal ganglion cells was found to be significantly higher in ocular hypertension eyes than in control eyes. However, there was no difference in angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 and transmembrane protease serine type 2 expression in retinal vessels and choroidal vessels between ocular hypertension and control eyes. In our study, the expression and distribution of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 and TMPREE2 in human retina were similar to that of non-human primates as expected. CONCLUSION Our study confirmed that angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 and transmembrane protease serine type 2 were expressed widely in rhesus monkey eyes. When compared with controls eyes, the expression of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 was higher in the retinal ganglion cells in ocular hypertension eyes, suggesting that high ocular pressure may affect the patients' ocular susceptibility to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection.

Abstract
Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is a novel coronavirus discovered in late 2019 in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China. The virus has now developed into a full-scale global pandemic affecting hundreds of millions of people to date. A majority of cases present with nonspecific acute upper respiratory symptoms. A wide range of systemic symptoms has been reported, with some patients presenting with nonspecific extrapulmonary symptoms. Recently, there has been an increased association of COVID-19-positive patients presenting with ocular symptoms. As an increasing number of patients present with ophthalmic manifestations, recognizing these visual symptoms is of utmost importance. Some patients may present with ocular symptoms as the first indication of COVID-19 infection; quickly isolating and starting treatment can aid in stopping the spread of this novel coronavirus. This review will describe the current epidemiology and pathophysiology of SARS-CoV-2, emphasizing the ophthalmic manifestations and their clinical course progression. Further, we will be reporting on the growing number of rare ocular manifestations that have occurred in some COVID-19-positive patients, along with the route of transmission, specific manifestations, and the treatment methods for both these pulmonary and extrapulmonary symptoms, specifically the ocular manifestations.

Abstract
PURPOSE To detect the viral RNA load of SARS-CoV-2 in conjunctival swabs of COVID-19 patients, and compare with nasopharyngeal swabs. METHODS Conjunctival swabs of COVID-19 patients (with PCR positive nasopharyngeal swabs) were subjected to quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) for detection of SARS-CoV-2 RNA. The cycle threshold (Ct) values of Open Reading Frame 1 (ORF 1 Ab gene) and nucleoprotein (N gene) PCRs were used to assess the viral RNA load, and compare them with the baseline values of nasopharyngeal swabs. RESULTS Of 93 patients, 17 (18.27%) demonstrated SARS-CoV-2 RNA in conjunctival swabs. Baseline nasopharyngeal swabs were collected at a median of 2 days; while, the conjunctival swabs were collected at median 7 days, from onset of illness (p < 0.001). Despite a significant delay in conjunctival swab collection than nasopharyngeal swabs, the Ct values (ORF or N gene PCRs) were comparable between nasopharyngeal swab and conjunctival swab samples. Subsequently, during the recovery period, in four of these 17 patients (with conjunctival swab positivity), when the second nasopharyngeal swab was 'negative', the conjunctival swab was 'positive'. CONCLUSION The conjunctival swabs demonstrated SARS-CoV-2 RNA in 17 (18.27%) of 93 COVID-19 patients. Our results may suggest a delayed or a prolonged shedding of the virus/viral RNA on the ocular surface than in nasopharyngeal mucosa.

Abstract
Healthcare workers around the world were confronted with innumerable torments with the emergence of COVID-19. Amid the pandemic, frontline healthcare personnel serve crucial responsibilities and endure significant social, psychological and economic consequences. This cross-sectional study collected demographic data for 1 year from 385 healthcare officials from all the hospitals spread across the state of Khartoum to research the factors that affected the healthcare workers and doctors who were on the frontline to diagnose and treat the patients with potential or confirmed COVID-19. The degree of symptoms of depression, anxiety and insomnia was also assessed through validated measurement tools. The female participants showed more vulnerability to depression, anxiety and insomnia than their male counterparts. It was reported by the end of the study that the healthcare workers in Sudan are under immense psychological hazards.

Abstract
Introduction COVID-19 caused by SARS-CoV-2, commonly presents with symptoms such as fever and shortness of breath but can also affect other organs. There is growing evidence pointing to potential eye complications. In this article, we aim to systematically review the ocular manifestations of COVID-19. Methods We conducted a systematic review to explore the ocular manifestations of COVID-19. We searched online databases including PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Web of Science up to September 4, 2023. After a two-stage screening process and applying inclusion/exclusion criteria, eligible articles were advanced to the data extraction phase. The PRISMA checklist and Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) were used for quality and bias risk assessments. Results We selected and extracted data from 42 articles. Most of the studies were cross-sectional (n = 33), with the highest number conducted in Turkey (n = 10). The most frequent ocular manifestation was conjunctivitis, reported in 24 articles, followed by photophobia, burning, chemosis, itching, and ocular pain. Most studies reported complete recovery from these manifestations; however, one study mentioned visual loss in two patients. Conclusion In general, ocular manifestations of COVID-19 appear to resolve either spontaneously or with supportive treatments. For more severe cases, both medical treatment and surgery have been employed, with the outcomes suggesting that complete recoveries are attainable.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The importance of SARS-CoV-2 transmission via the eyes is unknown, with previous studies mainly focusing on protective eyewear in healthcare settings. This study aimed to test the hypothesis that wearing eyeglasses is associated with a lower risk of COVID-19. METHODS Participants from the Virus Watch prospective community cohort study responded to a questionnaire on the use of eyeglasses and contact lenses. Infection was confirmed through data linkage, self-reported positive results, and, for a subgroup, monthly capillary antibody testing. Multivariable logistic regression models, controlling for age, sex, income, and occupation, were used to identify the odds of infection depending on frequency and purpose of eyeglasses or contact lenses use. RESULTS A total of 19,166 participants responded to the questionnaire, with 13,681 (71.3%, CI 70.7-72.0) reporting they wore eyeglasses. Multivariable logistic regression model showed a 15% lower odds of infection for those who reported using eyeglasses always for general use (odds ratio [OR] 0.85, 95% 0.77-0.95, P = 0.002) compared to those who never wore eyeglasses. The protective effect was reduced for those who said wearing eyeglasses interfered with mask-wearing and was absent for contact lens wearers. CONCLUSIONS People who wear eyeglasses have a moderate reduction in risk of COVID-19 infection, highlighting that eye protection may make a valuable contribution to the reduction of transmission in community and healthcare settings.

Abstract
At the end of 2019, the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) emerged in Wuhan, China. On 11 March 2020, the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a pandemic. This virus affects many organs, including the eye, and can manifest through various clinical manifestations. Multiple neuro-ophthalmological manifestations have been reported in association with COVID-19, including, Optic Neuritis, cranial nerve palsies, eye movement abnormalities, and visual field defects. In this article, we report a case of bilateral neuroretinitis in association with (SARS-CoV-2).

Abstract
BACKGROUND While the 2019 novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has resulted in millions of cases worldwide, there is increasing recognition of a wide range of ocular manifestations associated with the virus, including uveitis. Uveitis is an inflammatory condition of the uveal tract of the eye that can lead to permanent vision loss if not treated promptly. Here we report a retrospective observational study of patients who presented with new onset or recurrent uveitis following COVID-19 infection. METHODS This is a retrospective observational study conducted at the Beijing Tongren Hospital. We identified patients who presented with symptoms of non-infectious active uveitis with positive real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) of COVID-19 within 4 weeks. All patients received ophthalmic examinations, including anterior and posterior segment imaging, to assess the extent of ocular involvement. RESULTS The 18 patients with a total of 33 eyes included in this study presented with symptoms of active uveitis within 4 weeks of their positive COVID-19 RT-PCR test. Among them, 9 patients presented with the development of uveitis following COVID-19 infection, and 9 patients had relapsed uveitis after COVID-19 infection. Treatment with corticosteroids resulted in improvement of symptoms and resolution of inflammation in all cases. In this study, all patients did not experience any adverse drug reactions during treatment. CONCLUSION Our observational study highlights the potential for new onset or recurrence of uveitis following COVID-19 infection. Abstract
BACKGROUND In this study, we report a case series of acute macular neuroretinopathy (AMN) associated with COVID-19 infection. METHODS This retrospective observational study was conducted at Beijing Tongren Hospital. We reviewed patients who were diagnosed with AMN within one month of testing positive for COVID-19 using real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). RESULTS A total of 11 AMN patients (20 eyes) were included in the study. The mean age was 33.8 ± 12.6 years. The average interval between a positive COVID-19 PCR test and the onset of ocular symptoms was 2.8 ± 2.5 days. The mean follow-up period for the patients was 12.5 ± 3.8 weeks. Imaging characteristics of AMN patients following COVID-19 infection included areas of low reflectivity on near-infrared reflectance (NIR) imaging, hyperreflective lesions at the level of the outer plexiform layer (OPL) and outer nuclear layer (ONL) and disruption of the ellipsoid zone (EZ) on spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) B-scans. Visual field examinations revealed parafoveal scotomas that closely corresponded to the clinical lesions. Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A) demonstrated impaired perfusion in the deep retinal vascular plexus. Fluorescein angiography (FA), indocyanine green angiography (ICGA), and spontaneous fundus autofluorescence showed no significant abnormalities. During follow-up, partial improvement in retinal lesions was observed in NIR imaging and SD-OCT in some patients, but a proportion of patients still exhibited persistent retinal damage and no improvement in visual field scotomas. CONCLUSION COVID-19-related AMN share similar clinical and imaging features with AMN due to other causes, as evidenced by the persistent presence of visual field scotomas over a longer duration. Abstract
BACKGROUND Acute posterior multifocal placoid pigment epitheliopathy (APMPPE) is a rare inflammatory eye disorder that is characterized by the presence of multiple placoid lesions in the posterior pole of the eye. Relentless placoid chorioretinitis (RPC) is an inflammatory chorioretinopathy that combines clinical features of APMPPE and serpiginous chorioretinitis, which is a progressive condition with a high risk of visual disability. Patients with COVID-19 can develop various ocular manifestations, however, there have been limited reports of APMPPE and RPC associated with the infection. We report a case of a patient who developed APMPPE after a COVID-19 infection and subsequently progressed into RPC. CASE PRESENTATION A 17-year-old male presented with a one-week history of painless gradual visual loss in both eyes. Two months prior to the visual symptoms, the patient had a SARS CoV-2 infection, confirmed by polymerase chain reaction test. Clinical findings with fundoscopy, optical coherence tomography and fluorescein angiography were consistent with APMPPE. Due to the severely affected vision in both eyes, the patient was started on 50 mg oral prednisolone daily, after which vision began to improve rapidly. Two months after symptom onset during steroid taper, the impression of continued inflammatory activity and new lesions in the retinal periphery of both eyes suggested RPC. Adalimumab 40 mg every other week was initiated with 12.5 mg prednisolone daily followed by slow tapering. Vision improved and five months after the start of the adalimumab treatment, the steroid was discontinued and there were no signs of active inflammation. The patient has been followed for a total of 21 months since presentation, had full visual recovery and good tolerance of the immunosuppressive treatment. CONCLUSION COVID-19 might cause long-lasting activity of APMPPE. The scarcity of reports compared with the number of confirmed COVID-19 infections worldwide suggests a rare entity. The association of APMPPE with a variety of infections may suggest a common immunological aberrant response that might be triggered by various factors. Further examinations and case reports are needed to understand the role of biological therapy in the treatment of such cases.

Abstract
From its outbreak in early 2020, the new SARS-CoV-2 infection has deeply affected the entire eye care system for several reasons. Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, ophthalmologists were among the "high-risk category" for contracting the SARS-CoV-2 infection based on the notion that the eye was suspected to be a site of inoculation, infection, and transmission. Clinical ophthalmologists have been required to learn and promptly recognize the ocular manifestations associated with the COVID-19 disease, with its treatments and vaccinations. Restriction measures, lockdown periods, guidelines to prevent SARS-CoV-2 infection transmission, and the use of telemedicine and artificial intelligence modalities have induced profound modifications. These changes, which are most likely to be irreversible, influence routine clinical practice, education, and research, thus giving rise to a "new ophthalmology in the COVID era". This book chapter aims to provide several notions regarding COVID-19 in ophthalmology, including the SARS-CoV-2 virus infection and transmission modalities; the ocular manifestation associated with the COVID-19 disease; the drugs and vaccines used for COVID-19; the precautions adopted in the ophthalmic practice to limit the spread of the virus; the consequences of the pandemic on the ophthalmic patients, clinicians, and the entire eye care system; and, the future of ophthalmology in the era of "COVID new normal".

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To determine clinical features and outcomes of posterior scleritis masquerading as uveal melanoma following vaccination against COVID-19 and/or COVID-19 infection. SUBJECTS/METHODS All patients with posterior scleritis referred to our service to rule out intraocular tumour between February 2021 and June 2022, who previously had COVID-19 vaccination and/or infection (n = 8). A retrospective detailed review of patient charts and imaging was carried out. RESULTS Previous COVID-19 vaccination was documented in 6 patients (75%) and previous COVID-19 infection and vaccination in 2 patients (25%). Demographic features included mean age of 59 years (median 68, range 5-86 years), white race (n = 7, 87%), and male sex (n = 5, 63%). Mean visual acuity at presentation was 0.24 LogMAR (median 0.18, range 0.0-0.70). The main presenting symptom was blurred vision with pain (n = 5, 63%). Features that suggested scleritis and not uveal melanoma included pain (n = 6, 75%), anterior scleritis (n = 3, 38%), disc oedema (n = 1, 13%), choroidal detachment (n = 3, 38%), choroidal folds (n = 3, 38%), diffusely thickened scleral wall on ultrasonography (n = 2, 25%), Tenon's oedema (n = 5, 63%), and scleral nodule with medium/high internal reflectivity on ultrasonography (n = 4, 50%). Follow-up information at mean of 2 months (range 0.25-7 months) revealed visual acuity at date last seen was mean 0.30 LogMAR (median 0.29, range 0.0-0.54). By 2 months, resolution of "tumour" was noted in 5/6 (83%) patients with follow-up. CONCLUSIONS Posterior scleritis following COVID-19 vaccination and/or infection can masquerade as choroidal melanoma. At 2 months duration, partial or complete resolution of features with minimal visual consequence was noted.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine whether the COVID-19 pandemic was associated with an increased incidence of uveitis in children. STUDY DESIGN We performed a time-series analysis of patient records from a national, hospital-based, French surveillance system. All children hospitalized for uveitis in France between January 2012 and March 2022 were included. The incidence of newly diagnosed uveitis per 100 000 children per trimester in France was analyzed by a quasi-Poisson regression. A cohort of children diagnosed with uveitis at Robert-Debré Hospital was used to compare the characteristics of uveitis after and before the onset of the pandemic. RESULTS During the study period, 2492 children were hospitalized for uveitis in France. The COVID-19 pandemic, which started in March 2020, was associated with a significant increase in the occurrence of uveitis (estimated cumulative change, 44.9%; 95% CI 11.4-78.4; P < .001). The increase in the incidence of pediatric uveitis started in October 2020, while the national immunization program targeting children aged less than 18 years began in June 2021. This increase involved all forms of uveitis, regardless of location, and clincial characteristics were similar to those diagnosed before the pandemic. CONCLUSIONS Our study evidenced a significant increase in the incidence of pediatric uveitis following the COVID-19 pandemic. This increase occurred 6 months before the implementation of the national COVID-19 vaccination program for children, suggesting that the resurgence of this rare disease is independent of COVID-19 vaccination.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Neurotropic capabilities of SARS-COVs allow viruses to reach the central nervous system by hematogenous neuronal dissemination. The human retina, as an extension of the Central Nervous System, may have some neurodegenerative and/or vascular modifications related to COVID-19. OBJECTIVES To evaluate choroidal and inner neural layers in participants previously recovered from COVID-19 compared to the control group using optical coherence tomography. METHODS With a cross-sectional approach, the sample (n = 96), constituted by patients who have recovered from COVID-19 (n = 56) and healthy participants control group (n = 40) were ophthalmologically characterized. The neurodegenerative and vascular histological assessment was performed using SD-OCT and the mean thickness was measured in Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS) subfields. Retinal nerve fiber layer, Ganglion cell layer and subfoveal choroidal thickness were obtained through semi-automatic measurement. RESULTS A total of 40 controls (27 women [67.5%]) and 56 COVID-19 participants (34 women [60.8%]) were included in this first report. There were retinal thickness significant differences in nearly all inner ETDRS subfields: nasal 3 mm (p = .025), I3 (p = .049), and temporal 3 mm (p = .009). Also, a decrease in neural layers was found in the nasal 3 mm (p = .049) and temporal 3 mm (p = .029) during ganglion cell layer assessment. The peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer thickness was thinner in the COVID-19 group in superior temporal (p = .019), nasal (p = .002), inferior temporal (p = .046) and global (p = .014). Concerning the subfoveal choroidal measurement, an increase was observed in the COVID-19 group (p = .002). CONCLUSION Participants who had recovered from COVID-19 showed a non-glaucomatous neuropathy trend pattern. We found differences closer to the classic description of the "bow-tie" observed in other neurological as compressive neuropathies at the chiasma location. OCT assessment also showed an increase in choroidal thickness as a result of vascular changes.

Abstract
Purpose The purpose of the study is to observe the characteristics of ocular manifestations in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients and to analyze the presence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 ribonucleic acid (SARS-CoV-2 RNA) in the tears of patients with moderate-to-severe COVID-19. Material and methods We conducted this prospective cross-sectional study from February to June 2021 at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, one of the tertiary eye care centers in Nagpur, India. The study included confirmed COVID-19 patients based on real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) nasopharyngeal swabs, whether or not the patients exhibited ocular symptoms. We recorded detailed information regarding the patients' history, including demographic profile, ocular symptoms, systemic symptoms, and radiologic findings. We collected ocular samples within 48 hours of collecting naso-oropharyngeal samples from the patients' eyes. We used conjunctival swabs to obtain tear samples, which we then placed in viral transport media (VTM) for cold chain transportation to the microbiology department. We performed RT-PCR on the tear samples to detect the presence of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Result We included 40 patients in the study, with 26 (65%) classified as having moderate COVID-19, six (15%) classified as having severe COVID-19, and the remaining having mild COVID-19. Out of the 40 patients, five (12%) tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 in the tear sample using RT-PCR, seven (17%) exhibited ocular signs and symptoms, and only one tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 in their tears. The ocular manifestations observed in COVID-19 patients included dry eye, conjunctivitis (including conjunctival hyperemia and epiphora), and lid edema. Notably, we detected a positive COVID-19 tear sample in patients both with and without ocular symptoms. Conclusion Limited reports have focused on ocular involvement in patients with COVID-19. However, our study demonstrates the detection of SARS-CoV-2 in conjunctival swabs from confirmed COVID-19 patients, albeit with a lower positivity rate. Despite the low prevalence of the virus found in tears, there is a potential risk of transmission through ocular routes. It is noteworthy that we observed a COVID-19-positive tear sample in patients with and without ocular symptoms. Therefore, it is important to consider the possibility of ocular transmission even in the absence of ocular manifestations. Medical personnel should take careful precautions during ocular examinations of patients diagnosed with COVID-19 to minimize the risk of transmission.

Abstract
In this case study, the authors describe peculiar bilateral cotton wool-like retinal lesions associated with macular edema in a patient with COVID-19 who was vaccinated with a single dose of AstraZeneca one month earlier. This patient had no pulmonary or systemic cardiovascular complications from COVID-19, as reported in other papers that found retinal lesions. However, the patient was diagnosed with idiopathic myopathy when discovering the SARS-CoV-2 infection. The patient was a 22-year-old white female with no previous history of morbidity, complaining of blurred vision in both eyes seven days after testing positive for SARS-CoV-2 by PCR (using nasal and oral swab) and confirmed through ELISA blood test (IgM positive). There was no ancillary test revealing diabetes mellitus. The patient presented with scattered whitish cotton wool-like lesions and a few hemorrhages on the posterior pole in fundus examination. On spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT), there were hyperreflective lesions in the nerve fiber layer, ganglion cell layer, inner nuclear layer, and inner and outer plexiform layers at the site corresponding to the whitish cotton wool-like lesions in the posterior fundus photos. Moreover, the macula of both eyes had intraretinal and subretinal fluid, reversible with corticosteroid therapy. In conclusion, COVID-19 has been associated with capillary disorders at different target sites such as retina, lungs, and central nervous system. Similarly, vaccination against SARS-CoV-2 has been linked to retinal complications in the literature; however, cotton wool-like lesions have not yet been reported. There are many questions yet to be answered about the implications of COVID-19 infection and its vaccines.

Abstract
Background Nurses in Ophthalmology Department (OD) had a high risk of infection during the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. This study examined the prevalence, correlates, and network structure of depression, and explored its association with quality of life (QOL) in Chinese OD nurses. Methods Based on a cross-sectional survey, demographic and clinical data were collected. Depression was measured with the 9-item Self-reported Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), and QOL was measured using the World Health Organization Quality of Life Questionnaire-brief version (WHOQOL-BREF). Univariate analyses, multivariate logistic regression analyses, and network analyses were performed. Results Altogether, 2,155 OD nurses were included. The overall prevalence of depression among OD nurses was 32.71% (95%CI: 30.73-34.70%). Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that having family or friends or colleagues who were infected (OR = 1.760, p = 0.003) was significantly associated with higher risk of depression. After controlling for covariates, nurses with depression reported lower QOL (F(1, 2,155) = 596.784, p < 0.001) than those without depression. Network analyses revealed that 'Sad Mood', 'Energy Loss' and 'Worthlessness' were the key central symptoms. Conclusion Depression was common among OD nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic. Considering the negative impact of depression on QOL and daily life, regular screening for depression, timely counselling service, and psychiatric treatment should be provided for OD nurses, especially those who had infected family/friends or colleagues. Central symptoms identified in network analysis should be targeted in the treatment of depression.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) vaccines have been reported to have ocular side effects including scleritis and episcleritis. PURPOSE To report scleritis and episcleritis within a month following administration of COVID-19 vaccine. METHODS Retrospective case series. RESULTS 15 eyes of 12 consecutive patients with scleritis and episcleritis from March 2021 to September 2021 were included. The mean time of onset of symptoms in patients with scleritis was 15.7 days (range, 4-30) and for episcleritis it was 13.2 days (range 2-30). Patients received COVISHIELD™ (10 patients) and COVAXIN™ (2 patients). Five patients had denovo inflammation and seven had recurrent inflammation. Episcleritis patients were treated with topical steroids and systemic COX2 inhibitors while patients with scleritis were treated with topical steroids/oral steroids/antiviral medications depending on the aetiology. CONCLUSION Scleritis and episcleritis following COVID-19 vaccination are milder and do not require intensive immunosuppression except in rare cases.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of the study was to describe the cases of intraocular inflammation following COVID-19 vaccination (Comirnaty mRNA vaccine and CoronaVac vaccine) in Hong Kong. METHODS This was a retrospective case series. RESULTS This series includes 16 eyes among 10 female patients, with a mean age of 49.4 ± 17.4 years. Eight patients (80%) received the Pfizer-BioNTech mRNA vaccination. Anterior uveitis was the most common presentation of postvaccination uveitis (50%) observed in our series, followed by intermediate uveitis (30%) and posterior uveitis (20%), respectively. A case of retinal vasculitis in the form of frosted branch angiitis, previously only reported following COVID-19 infection, was observed following COVID-19 vaccination. The median time from vaccination to uveitis onset was 15.2 days (range: 0-6 weeks). Inflammation in 11 out 16 eyes (68.75%) was completely resolved with topical steroids. CONCLUSION Anterior uveitis was the predominant presentations of uveitis flare-ups following COVID-19 in our case series, followed by intermediate uveitis. Aligning with the current global literature concerning this issue, most of the uveitis attacks presented as anterior uveitis and were completely resolved with topical steroids. Consequently, the risk of uveitis flare-ups should not deter the public from receiving COVID-19 vaccines.

Abstract
PURPOSE To study the effect of coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) on retinal vasculature by Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography (OCTA). METHODS Macular OCTA images of patients recovered from COVID-19 infections were studied including foveal avascular zone (FAZ), capillary vascular densities (CVD) of the superficial and deep capillary network (SCP, DCP), and central foveal thickness (CFT). RESULTS The FAZ area was significantly larger in post COVID-19 cases compared to the healthy controls (p=0.032). Post COVID-19 cases had significant lower CVDs in perifoveal quadrants of the SCP. They also had lower CVD in the whole area, parafoveal, temporal and inferior perifoveal areas in the DCP. The parafoveal DCP area showed a positive correlation with disease duration (r=0.249, p-value=0.018). The whole SCP was significantly larger in cases with lymphopenia (p-value=0.004). CONCLUSION This study found asymptomatic retinal vascular affection in post COVID-19 eyes showing a relation with disease clinical and laboratory features.

Abstract
Investigating the interplay of factors that result in a viral zoonotic outbreak is difficult, though it is increasingly important. As anthropogenic influences shift the delicate balance of ecosystems, new zoonoses emerge in humans. Sub-Saharan Africa is a notable hotspot for zoonotic disease due to abundant competent mammalian reservoir hosts. Furthermore, poverty, corruption, and an overreliance on natural resources play considerable roles in depleting biological resources, exacerbating the population's susceptibility. Unsurprisingly, viral zoonoses have emerged in Africa, including HIV/AIDS, Ebola, Avian influenza, Lassa fever, Zika, and Monkeypox. These diseases are among the principal causes of death in endemic areas. Though typically distinct in their manifestations, viral zoonoses are connected by underlying, definitive factors. This review summarises vital findings on viral zoonoses in Africa using nine notable case studies as a benchmark for future studies. We discuss the importance of ecological recuperation and protection as a central strategy to control zoonotic diseases. Emphasis was made on moderating key drivers of zoonotic diseases to forestall future pandemics. This is in conjunction with attempts to redirect efforts from reactive to pre-emptive through a multidisciplinary "one health" approach.

Abstract
As the presentations and complications of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) continue to surface, the ocular manifestations have emerged as an area of interest. Research and reports conveyed the presence of several ophthalmic conditions observed in Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients. These publications documented a range of presentations varying from asymptomatic to serious impairments. The aim of this study is to characterize the ophthalmic pathologies and their frequencies observed due to COVID-19 in patients across different regions of the world. The goal is that the paper assists primary care physicians and healthcare providers. A systematic review of 31 articles published between January 1, 2021 to January 13, 2022, explored the presenting ocular symptoms of COVID-19, diagnosis, duration of ophthalmic complications, as well as pre-existing comorbidities. A total of 816 patients, 427 (52.3%) males and 389 (47.7%) females, from various regions of the world were investigated. Studies focusing on patients with a history of ocular pathologies, non-COVID-19 infections, complications associated with the COVID-19 vaccine, and pediatric patients were excluded from this study. Ocular complications were most commonly reported one to two weeks following the initial COVID-19 diagnosis. Analysis suggests that the "red" eye is the most prevalent presenting ophthalmologic symptom, followed by temporary vision loss. Conjunctivitis was also the most common clinical diagnosis reported, followed by neuro-retinal affection in the form of cotton wool spots (n=127 and n=9, respectively). This study summarizes ocular manifestations in COVID-19 patients and serves to help healthcare providers recognize common symptoms and their severity. This may lead to early diagnosis, treatment, and intervention of these manifestations.

Abstract
PURPOSE Following the pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, different vaccines were developed and approved by the main medical authorities under emergency protocol regulations. Although highly effective and well-tolerated in most patients, vaccines can uncommonly cause ocular adverse effects. In this article, the current evidence related to vaccine-associated uveitis is reviewed. METHODS A literature review of uveitis post various SARS-CoV-2 vaccinations. RESULTS Uveitis was reported following various forms of vaccinations but was more commonly seen following the Pfizer mRNA vaccine which is the most used vaccination worldwide. In western countries, the most common uveitis is mild anterior uveitis, developing within a week of first or subsequent vaccination with good resolution following appropriate topical steroid therapy in most cases. Posterior uveitis and particularly Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease was more prevalent in Asia. Uveitis may develop among known uveitis patients and those with other autoimmune diseases. CONCLUSION Uveitis following Covid vaccinations is uncommon and has a good prognosis.

Abstract
PURPOSE To analyze structural and vascular changes of the retina and choroid in pediatric patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) using optical coherence tomography (OCT)/OCT angiography (OCTA). METHODS This comparative cross-sectional study consists of the COVID-19 group including pediatric COVID-19 patients and the control group including healthy children. Vessel density (VD), central macular thickness,, and choroidal thickness (ChT) measurements were performed using swept-source OCT/OCTA 12 weeks after the recovery from COVID-19. RESULTS The mean VD measurements in the central fovea and nasal quadrants of all three retinal layers and choriocapillaris showed insignificantly lower values in the COVID-19 group when compared to the control group (0:002 < p < 0:05 for all). Similar to VD measurements, insignificant lower ChT measurements were obtained in the central fovea and nasal points in the COVID-19 group. CONCLUSION OCTA can be used as a non-invasive and valid biomarker in the assessment of early microvascular dysfunction associated with COVID-19.

Abstract
PURPOSE To report sarcoid-like uveitis with or without tubulointerstitial nephritis (TIN) during coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and to discuss diagnostic evaluation and treatment. METHODS Detailed information on the subject's demographics, medical history, ophthalmic examination findings, and laboratory results were obtained from medical records. Fluorescein angiography (FA) and indocyanine green angiography (ICGA) images were evaluated. RESULTS All seven patients aged between 8 and 17 had bilateral granulomatous panuveitis. TIN preceded in four patients. Thorax computed tomography of patient 1 was found to be compatible with COVID-19, patients 2 and 3 were in contact with Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) positive parents, patients 4 and 5 were found to be SARS-CoV-2 PCR positive, and patients 6 and 7 were positive for SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibodies. ICGA revealed hypofluorescent dots in six patients. Intraocular inflammation was controlled with corticosteroid and/or immunomodulatory therapy. Visual acuity was maintained or improved in all. CONCLUSION SARS-CoV-2 infection may be related to sarcoid-like uveitis and acute tubulointerstitial nephritis.

Abstract
Posterior eye segment involvement in COVID-19 has varied manifestations: vascular, inflammatory, and neuronal. All of them are triggered by SARS-CoV-2 virus but they cannot be viewed as exclusively specific to COVID-19. According to the literature, the mean age of the patients varies from 17 to 75 with the median of 50 years. The median duration between the appearance of ophthalmic symptoms and the detection of COVID-19 was 12 days. The disease affects both men and women equally. Direct exposure to the virus, immune-mediated tissue damage, activation of the coagulation system, the prothrombotic state caused by a viral infection, concomitant diseases and medications used in the treatment contribute to the development of eye pathologies. Ophthalmologists should be aware of the possible relations of posterior eye segment pathologies, orbit and neuro-ophthalmic disorders with SARS-CoV-2, as well as the possible exacerbation of chronic forms of inflammatory eye diseases and autoimmune disorders due to anti-COVID-19 vaccination.

Abstract
To report a case of Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease (VKH) in a 27-year-old male 2 weeks proceeding COVID-19 infection onset. Severe complications of VKH can be avoided by early diagnosis and adequate treatment with corticosteroids and immunosuppressants. It is possible that COVID-19 was a potential immunological trigger of VKH in our patient.
