The beneficial role of potassium in Cd-induced stress alleviation and growth improvement in Gladiolus grandiflora L

The role and transcriptomic mechanism of cell wall in the mutual antagonized effects between selenium nanoparticles and cadmium in wheat

Selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) has been reported as a beneficial role in alleviating cadmium (Cd) toxicity in plant. However, underlying molecular mechanisms about SeNPs reducing Cd accumulation and alleviating Cd toxicity in wheat are not well understood. A hydroponic culture was performed to evaluate Cd and Se accumulation, cell wall components, oxidative stress and antioxidative system, and transcriptomic response of wheat seedlings after SeNPs addition under Cd stress. Results showed that SeNPs application notably reduced Cd concentration in root and in shoot by 56.9% and 37.3%, respectively. Additionally, SeNPs prompted Cd distribution in root cell wall by 54.7%, and increased lignin, pectin and hemicellulose contents by regulating cell wall biosynthesis and metabolism-related genes. Further, SeNPs alleviated oxidative stress caused by Cd in wheat through signal transduction pathways. We also observed that Cd addition reduced Se accumulation by downregulating the expression level of aquaporin 7. These results indicated that SeNPs alleviated Cd toxicity and reduced Cd accumulation in wheat, which were associated with the synergetic regulation of cell wall biosynthesis pathway, uptake transporters, and antioxidative system via signaling pathways.

Modulation of plant photosynthetic processes during metal and metalloid stress, and strategies for manipulating photosynthesis-related traits

Metals constitute vital elements for plant metabolism and survival, acting as essential co-factors in cellular processes which are indispensable for plant growth and survival. Excess or deficient provision of metal/metalloids puts plant's life and survival at risk, thus considered a potent stress for plants. Chloroplasts as an organelle with a high metal demand form a pivotal site within the metal homeostasis network. Therefore, the metal-mediated electron transport chain (ETC) in chloroplasts is a primary target site of metal/metalloid-induced stresses. Both excess and deficient availability of metal/metalloids threatens plant's photosynthesis in several ways. Energy demands from the photosynthetic carbon reactions should be in balance with energy output of ETC. Malfunctioning of ETC components as a result of metal/metalloid stress initiates photoinhiition. A feedback inhibition from carbon fixation process also impedes the ETC. Metal stress impairs antioxidant enzyme activity, pigment biosynthesis, and stomatal function. However, genetic manipulations, nutrient management, keeping photostasis, and application of phytohormones are among strategies for coping with metal stress. Consequently, a comprehensive understanding of the underlying mechanisms of metal/metalloid stress, as well as the exploration of potential strategies to mitigate its impact on plants are imperative. This review offers a mechanistic insight into the disruption of photosynthesis regulation by metal/metalloids and highlights adaptive approaches to ameliorate their effects on plants. Focus was made on photostasis, nutrient interactions, phytohormones, and genetic interventions for mitigating metal/metalloid stresses.

Synergistic effects of gamma-aminobutyric acid and melatonin on seed germination and cadmium tolerance in tomato

The effects of exogenous γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and melatonin (MT) on tomato seed germination and shoot growth exposed to cadmium stress were investigated. On the one hand, treatment with MT (10-200 μM) or GABA (10-200 μM) alone could significantly relieve cadmium stress in tomato seedlings, which is reflected in increasing the germination rate, vigor index, fresh weight, dry weight and radicle lengths of tomato seeds, as well as the soluble content compared to the absence of exogenous treatment, and the alleviating effect reached the peak in the 200 µM GABA or 150 µM MT alone. On the other hand, exogenous MT and GABA showed synergistic effects on the germination of tomato seed under cadmium stress. Moreover, the application of 100 µM GABA combined with 100 µM MT markedly decreased the contents of Cd and MDA by upregulating the activities of antioxidant enzymes, thereby alleviating the toxic effect of cadmium stress on tomato seeds. Collectively, the combinational strategy showed significant positive effects on seed germination and cadmium stress resistance in tomato.

Evaluation of phytoremediation potential and resistance of Gladiolus grandiflora L. against cadmium stress

Although irrigation water is a fundamental need for plant growth, it is also a source of pollutants if contaminated with harmful materials like cadmium (Cd). Irrigation water possessing abundant Cd causes damage to soil, plants, animals and ultimately human beings through the food chain. A pot experiment was conducted to evaluate the gladiolus (Gladiolus grandiflora L.) potential of Cd accumulation and the capability of the plant to be an economically beneficial choice in presence of high Cd irrigation water supply. Artificially prepared four levels of Cd irrigation water were applied to the plants viz., 30, 60, 90 and 120 mg L^-1. The results revealed that 30 mg L^-1 Cd had no difference in all growth-related parameters when compared to the control. Photosynthesis rate, stomatal conductance and transpiration rate along with plant height and spike length were reduced with high accumulation levels of Cd in plants. The main plant portion for Cd storage found in Gladiolus grandiflora L was corm where the amount of Cd was 10-12 times higher than the amount found in leaves, and 2-4 times more than the stem. This deportment was further established by the translocation factor (TF). In corm to shoot TF and corm to stem TF, the factor reduced with increasing Cd levels, while, in corm to leaves TF, Cd levels were statistically non-significant. From corm to shoot TF value of 0.68 and 0.43 in case of 30 and 60 mg L^-1, Cd treatments indicates good phytoremediation potential of Gladiolus in low and moderate Cd-polluted environments. Conclusively, the study reveals the good capability of Gladiolus grandiflora L. to harvest Cd from the soil and water in reasonably good amount with sufficient potential to grow under irrigation-based Cd stress. Under revelations of the study, Gladiolus grandiflora L appeared as a Cd accumulator which could potentially be used as a sustainable approach for phytoremediation of Cd.

Coupling Effects of Potassium Fertilization Rate and Application Time on Growth and Grain Yield of Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) Plants Grown Under Cd-Contaminated Saline Soil

Potassium is an essential macronutrient, where its availability regulates numerous biochemical, phenological, and physiological responses in plants. Synchronizing potassium supply with plant demand is a key factor to enhance growth and grain production of wheat grown in cadmium-contaminated saline soils. Field experiments were conducted in El Fayoum province, Egypt, between latitudes 29° 02′ and 29° 35′ N and longitudes 30° 23′ and 31° 05′ E, during the cropping seasons of 2017–2018 and 2018–2019 to determine the influence of different applied potassium rates and times on nutrient uptake and wheat yield grown under Cd-contaminated saline soil (ECe = 8.53 dS m−1 and Cd = 18 mg kg−1 soil). Four K levels (K0, K40, K80, and K120 representing 0, 40, 80, and 120 kg ha−1) were applied at different application times [full dose (basal) at sowing (100% S), two equal split doses at sowing and flowering stage (50% S + 50% F), and full dose at flowering stage (100% F)]. The experimental treatments were arranged in a randomized split complete block design and replicated three times. The applied K rates, times, and their interaction induced significant differences in nutrient uptake and physiological responses which in turn improved the growth and yield of the wheat crop. Potassium addition with 120 kg ha−1 at two equal split doses (50% S + 50% F) resulted in the highest values of plant height (97 cm), Fv/Fm (0.83), PI (5.49), SPAD (58.63), MSI (34.57), seed yield (5.04 t ha−1), straw yield (9.04 t ha−1), and water productivity (0.99 kg m−3). Similarly, the uptake of N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, and Zn was increased, while the uptake of Na and Cd decreased as the K supply increased under the split application. The addition of potassium by 120 kg ha−1 in two equal split doses at the sowing and flowering stage could be a valuable approach to improve yield and yield quality of wheat crop grown under cadmium-contaminated saline soils.

Biofilm formation and flocculation potential analysis of halotolerant Bacillus tequilensis and its inoculation in soil to mitigate salinity stress of chickpea

Application of beneficial microbes in soil is an important avenue to control plant stresses. In this study, the salinity tolerance of halotolerant bacteria (Bacillus tequilensis) was investigated and the bacterium was inoculated in the soil to mitigate salinity stress. The results revealed the highest floc yield and biofilm formation ability of B. tequilensis at 100 mM NaCl concentration. Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy depicted the presence of carbohydrates and proteins which binds with sodium ions (Na+) and provide tolerance against salinity. Using PCR, plant growth-promoting bacterial genes viz., 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate deaminase and pyrroloquinoline quinone were successfully amplified from the genome of B. tequilensis. In the saline soil, B. tequilensis was inoculated and chickpea plants were grown. The bacterial strain improved the physiology, biochemistry, and antioxidant enzyme activities of the chickpea plant under salt stress. Plants inoculated with B. tequilensis exhibited higher relative water content, higher photosynthetic pigments, lower levels of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and malondialdehyde, and improved enzymatic activity for the scavenging of reactive oxygen species. The findings of this study suggest the sustainable use of B. tequilensis to mitigate the salinity stress of chickpea and other crops. This bacterium not only helps in the alleviation of the toxic effects of salt but also increases plant growth along with a reduction in crop losses due to salinity.

The latitudinal and longitudinal allelopathic patterns of an invasive alligator weed (Alternanthera philoxeroides) in China

Allelopathy has been considered a good explanation for the successful invasion of some invasive plants. However, the real latitudinal and longitudinal allelopathic effects on native species have rarely been documented since many exotics have spread widely. We conducted a Petri dish experiment to determine the latitudinal and longitudinal allelopathic patterns of an invasive alligator weed (Alternanthera philoxeroides) on a common crop (Lactuca sativa) in China, and find what determines the allelopathic intensity. The results showed that the allelopathic effects of A. philoxeroides increased with the latitude while decreased with the longitude. This indicated that A. philoxeroides used its allelopathy to gain competitive advantages more in its recent invaded communities than that in its early invaded ones as A. philoxeroides is expanding from southeast China to northwest China. Furthermore, we found that the allelopathic intensity of A. philoxeroide was negatively correlated to the leaf contents of soluble carbohydrate (SC), carbon (C) and nitrogen (N), but that was positively correlated to the leaf contents of soluble protein (SP), free amino acids (FAA), plant polyphenol (PP), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K). These results suggested that the allelopathic intensity of A. philoxeroide was more determined by the limited P and K nutrients as well as the intermediate allelochemicals (SP, FAA, PP) rather than the unlimited C, N and SC. Thus, we can speculate that the negative or positive effects of plant aqueous extracts are a function of not only the extract concentrations but also the trade-offs between inhibition and promotion of all components in the extracts. Then we could reduce the allelopathic effects of A. philoxeroide by controlling the component contents in the plant tissues, by fertilization or other managements, especially in the plant recent invaded communities.

State-of-the-art OMICS strategies against toxic effects of heavy metals in plants: A review

Environmental pollution of heavy metals (HMs), mainly due to anthropogenic activities, has received growing attention in recent decades. HMs, especially the non-essential carcinogenic ones, including chromium (Cr), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), aluminum (Al), lead (Pb), and arsenic (As), have appeared as the most significant air, water, and soil pollutants, which adversely affect the quantity, quality, and security of plant-based food all over the world. Plants exposed to HMs could experience significant decline in growth and yield. To avoid or tolerate the toxic effects of HMs, plants have developed complicated defense mechanisms, including absorption and accumulation of HMs in cell organelles, immobilization by forming complexes with organic chelates, extraction by using numerous transporters, ion channels, signalling cascades, and transcription elements, among others. OMICS strategies have developed significantly to understand the mechanisms of plant transcriptomics, genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, and ionomics to counter HM-mediated stress stimuli. These strategies have been considered to be reliable and feasible for investigating the roles of genomics (genomes), transcriptomic (coding), mRNA transcripts (non-coding), metabolomics (metabolites), and ionomics (metal ions) to enhance stress resistance or tolerance in plants. The recent developments in the mechanistic understandings of the HMs-plant interaction in terms of their absorption, translocation, and toxicity invasions at the molecular and cellular levels, as well as plants' response and adaptation strategies against these stressors, are summarized in the present review. Transcriptomics, genomics, metabolomics, proteomics, and ionomics for plants against HMs toxicities are reviewed, while challenges and future recommendations are also discussed.

Toxicity analysis of TNT to alfalfa's mineral nutrition and secondary metabolism

Alfalfa has the ability to degrade TNT. TNT exposure caused root disruption of mineral nutrient metabolism. The exposure of TNT imbalanced basal cell energy metabolism. The mechanism of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) toxicity effects was analyzed in alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) seedlings by examining the mineral nutrition and secondary metabolism of the plant roots. Exposure to 25-100 mg·L^-1 TNT in a hydroponic solution for 72 h resulted in a TNT absorption rate of 26.8-63.0%. The contents of S, K, and B in root mineral nutrition metabolism increased significantly by 1.70-5.46 times, 1.38-4.01 times, and 1.40-4.03 times, respectively, after TNT exposure. Non-targeted metabolomics analysis of the roots identified 189 significantly upregulated metabolites and 420 significantly downregulated metabolites. The altered metabolites were primarily lipids and lipid-like molecules, and the most significant enrichment pathways were alanine, aspartate, and glutamate metabolism and glycerophospholipid metabolism. TNT itself was transformed in the root system into several intermediate products, including 4-hydroxylamino-2,6-dinitrotoluene, 4-amino-2,6-dinitrotoluene, 2-hydroxylamino-4,6-dinitrotoluene, 2,4',6,6'-tetranitro-2',4-azoxytoluene, 4,4',6,6'-tetranitro-2,2'-azoxytoluene, and 2,4-dinitrotoluene. Overall, TNT exposure disturbed the mineral metabolism balance, and significantly interfered with basic plant metabolism.

Potassium in plants: Growth regulation, signaling, and environmental stress tolerance

Potassium (K) is an essential element for the growth and development of plants; however, its scarcity or excessive level leads to distortion of numerous functions in plants. It takes part in the control of various significant functions in plant advancement. Because of the importance index, K is regarded second after nitrogen for whole plant growth. Approximately, higher than 60 enzymes are reliant on K for activation within the plant system, in which K plays a vital function as a regulator. Potassium provides assistance in plants against abiotic stress conditions in the environment. With this background, the present paper reviews the physiological functions of K in plants like stomatal regulation, photosynthesis and water uptake. The article also focuses upon the uptake and transport mechanisms of K along with its role in detoxification of reactive oxygen species and in conferring tolerance to plants against abiotic stresses. It also highlights the research progress made in the direction of K mediated signaling cascades.

Potassium and melatonin-mediated regulation of fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase (FBPase) and sedoheptulose-1,7- bisphosphatase (SBPase) activity improve photosynthetic efficiency, carbon assimilation and modulate glyoxalase system accompanying tolerance to cadmium stress in tomato seedlings

The mechanism of the combined action of potassium (K) and melatonin (Mel) in modulating tolerance to cadmium (Cd) stress in plants is not well understood. The present study reveals the synergistic role of K and Mel in enhancing physiological and biochemical mechanisms of Cd stress tolerance in tomato seedlings. The present findings reveal that seedlings subjected to Cd toxicity exhibited disturbed nutrients balance [nitrogen (N) and potassium (K)], chlorophyll (Chl) biosynthesis [reduced δ-aminolevulinic acid (δ-ALA) content and δ-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase (δ-ALAD) activity], pathway of carbon fixation [reduced fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase (FBPase) and sedoheptulose-1,7- bisphosphatase (SBPase) activity] and photosynthesis process in tomato seedlings. However, exogenous application of K and Mel alone as well as together improved physiological and biochemical mechanisms in tomato seedlings, but their combined application proved best by efficiently improving nutrient uptake, photosynthetic pigments biosynthesis (increased Chl a and b, and Total Chl), carbon flow in Calvin cycle, activity of Rubisco, carbonic anhydrase activity, and accumulation of total soluble carbohydrates content in seedlings under Cd toxicity. Furthermore, the combined treatment of K and Mel suppressed overproduction of reactive oxygen species (hydrogen peroxide and superoxide), Chl degradation [reduced chlorophyllase (Chlase) activity] and methylglyoxal content in Cd-stressed tomato seedlings by upregulating glyoxalase (increased glyoxalase I and glyoxalase II activity) and antioxidant systems (increased ascorbate-glutathione metabolism). Thus, the present study provides stronger evidence that the co-application of K and Mel exhibited synergistic roles in mitigating the toxic effect of Cd stress by increasing glyoxalase and antioxidant systems and also by improving photosynthetic efficiency in tomato seedlings.

Calcium Nanoparticles Impregnated With Benzenedicarboxylic Acid: A New Approach to Alleviate Combined Stress of DDT and Cadmium in Brassica alboglabra by Modulating Bioacummulation, Antioxidative Machinery and Osmoregulators

At present, the alleviation of stress caused by climate change and environmental contaminants is a crucial issue. Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) is a persistent organic pollutant (POP) and an organochlorine, which causes significant health problems in humans. The stress caused by cadmium (Cd) and the toxicity of DDT have direct effects on the growth and yield of crop plants. Ultimately, the greater uptake and accumulation of DDT by edible plants affects human health by contaminating the food chain. The possible solution to this challenging situation is to limit the passive absorption of POPs into the plants. Calcium (Ca) is an essential life component mandatory for plant growth and survival. This study used impregnated Ca (Bd_Ca) of benzenedicarboxylic acid (Bd) to relieve abiotic stress in plants of Brassica alboglabra. Bd_Ca mitigated the deleterious effects of Cd and reduced DDT bioaccumulation. By increasing the removal efficacy (RE) up to 256.14%, Bd_Ca greatly decreased pollutant uptake (Cd 82.37% and DDT 93.64%) and supported photosynthetic machinery (86.22%) and antioxidant enzyme defenses (264.73%), in applied plants. Exogenously applied Bd also successfully improved the antioxidant system and the physiochemical parameters of plants. However, impregnation with Ca further enhanced plant tolerance to stress. This novel study revealed that the combined application of Ca and Bd could effectively relieve individual and combined Cd stress and DDT toxicity in B. alboglabra.

Potassium reduces oxidative stress in tanzania guinea grass under cadmium toxicity

Plants used for phytoextraction of metals need to tolerate toxicity conditions. Potassium (K) participates in physiological and biochemical processes that can alleviate toxicity by heavy metals, including cadmium (Cd). This study aimed to evaluate the effect of K on photosynthesis and on the changes in the antioxidant system of tanzania guinea grass [Panicum maximum Jacq. cv. Tanzania (syn. Megathyrsus maximus (Jacq,) B.K. Simon & S.W.L. Jacobs)] under Cd toxicity. Plants were grown in a greenhouse, in nutrient solution, in a randomized complete block design, arranged in a 3 × 4 factorial, with three replications. Plants were supplied with three K levels (0.4 [K deficiency], 6.0, and 11.6 mmol L^-1) and exposed to four Cd levels (0.0, 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 mmol L^-1). Two plant growth periods were evaluated. High Cd level (1.5 mmol L^-1) led to a reduction in net photosynthesis (76%) by causing low stomatal conductance and losses in quantum efficiency of photosystem II. However, high K supply (11.6 mmol L^-1) increased the net photosynthesis by 15% in plants exposed to 1.0 mmol L^-1 Cd, due to upregulation of proline synthesis. Cd toxicity resulted in increases in lipid peroxidation and hydrogen peroxide concentration (35 and 50%; 25 and 30%, at first and second harvest, respectively) and reduction by 80-100% in activity of the antioxidant enzymes: superoxide dismutase, catalase, ascorbate peroxidase, guaiacol peroxidase, and glutathione reductase in the shoots of the grass. However, the high K supply (11.6 mmol L^-1) increased the activity of these enzymes (about 50-75%) and reduced lipid peroxidation (36%), restoring cellular homeostasis. Moreover, high K supply promoted a 25% increase in spermidine and spermine concentrations in the shoots. Therefore, K reduced the Cd-induced oxidative stress and increased the net photosynthesis in tanzania guinea grass by increasing the activity of antioxidant enzymes and proline and polyamines synthesis, which enhances the tolerance of this grass to Cd.

Effect of dissolved organic matter on the phytoremediation of Cd-contaminated soil by cotton

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) assists in the phytoremediation of heavy-metal-contaminated soils, but the effect of synergistic remediation of DOM on plants is unclear. This study investigated the effect of two DOM sources (cotton straw (CM) DOM and farmyard manure (FM) DOM) on cadmium (Cd) accumulation in Cd-contaminated soil by cotton and evaluated the phytoremediation effect of DOM. The results showed that adding DOM reduced the available nitrogen and increased organic matter, available phosphorus and available potassium. Applying DOM increased the proportions of Cd acid soluble fractions and reduced the proportions of Cd residual fractions by 1-7%. DOM application increased root length, root surface area and root volume compared to the control and had a promoting or inhibiting effect on cotton biomass, depending on the soil Cd concentration. Furthermore, applying DOM improved the Cd content and bioconcentration factor of cotton. The lower the molecular weight, hydrophilic components and aromaticity of DOM, the more conducive to Cd accumulation is in cotton. The correlation and random forest analyses also showed that CM showed high remediation potential. According to our study, DOM can improve the phytoremediation efficiency of cotton, especially in low-concentration contaminated soils. This study provides a basis for applying DOM in the phytoremediation of Cd-contaminated soils.

Silicon assisted ameliorative effects of iron nanoparticles against cadmium stress: Attaining new equilibrium among physiochemical parameters, antioxidative machinery, and osmoregulators of Phaseolus lunatus

Currently, producing safe agricultural commodities from the crop plants cultivated in the soil with increasing heavy metal toxicity is a gigantic challenge in front of researchers. Heavy metals are absorbed and translocated in the crop plants and then transferred to every downstream consumer of the food chain, including humans, causing serious disorders and ailments. The current research presents a combined schematic application of iron nanoparticles (Fe-NPs) and/or silicon (Si), to mitigate cadmium (Cd) stress in Lima bean (Phaseolus lunatus). It was noted that Cd-induced toxicity curtailed growth, antioxidative machinery, glyoxalase system and nutrient uptake of the plants. Furthermore, the physiochemical features of Cd stressed plants, including carotenoids, chlorophyll, photochemical quenching, photosynthetic efficiency, and leaf relative water contents, were improved by the combined application of Si and Fe-NPs. Moreover, higher levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), methylglyoxal (MG), hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂), and electrolyte leakage (EL) were observed in Cd stressed plants. Nevertheless, the independent treatment or combined application of Si and/or Fe-NPs attenuated the adversative effects of Cd on the aforementioned growth attributes. Furthermore, Si and Fe-NPs defended plants from the injurious effects of MG by improving the activities of the glyoxalase enzyme. The Si and Fe-NPs reduced Cd contents but at the same time improved uptake and accumulation of nutrients in treated plants exposed to the Cd regime. This study highlights that Si and Fe-NPs have enormous potential to mitigate Cd-induced phytotoxicity by declining Cd uptake and improving the growth attributes of plants if applied in combination.

Ionomic Approaches for Discovery of Novel Stress-Resilient Genes in Plants

Plants, being sessile, face an array of biotic and abiotic stresses in their lifespan that endanger their survival. Hence, optimized uptake of mineral nutrients creates potential new routes for enhancing plant health and stress resilience. Recently, minerals (both essential and non-essential) have been identified as key players in plant stress biology, owing to their multifaceted functions. However, a realistic understanding of the relationship between different ions and stresses is lacking. In this context, ionomics will provide new platforms for not only understanding the function of the plant ionome during stresses but also identifying the genes and regulatory pathways related to mineral accumulation, transportation, and involvement in different molecular mechanisms under normal or stress conditions. This article provides a general overview of ionomics and the integration of high-throughput ionomic approaches with other "omics" tools. Integrated omics analysis is highly suitable for identification of the genes for various traits that confer biotic and abiotic stress tolerance. Moreover, ionomics advances being used to identify loci using qualitative trait loci and genome-wide association analysis of element uptake and transport within plant tissues, as well as genetic variation within species, are discussed. Furthermore, recent developments in ionomics for the discovery of stress-tolerant genes in plants have also been addressed; these can be used to produce more robust crops with a high nutritional value for sustainable agriculture.

Magnetic Field Stimulation Effect on Germination and Antioxidant Activities of Presown Hybrid Seeds of Sunflower and Its Seedlings

Magnetic field biostimulation plays a significant role in enhancing the germination of seeds and increasing the metabolic rate. The low magnetic field effect for long exposure time and its effect on antioxidant profiling have not been studied. Therefore, in the recent findings, the static magnetic field’s impact on sunflower seeds subjected to the magnetic field at varying intensity (millitesla) for different exposure times was examined. The effectiveness of magnetic biostimulation on presown sunflower seeds, growth parameters of seedlings (biomass, root and shoot length, fresh and dry weight of roots, shoots, leaf, and height of plants), and antioxidant activities were also studied. It has been revealed that magnetic treatment at 50 mT/45 min greatly influenced the growth parameters, including mean germination growth (100 ± 0.02) and final emergence rate. Concerning the antioxidant parameters, seed variety FH620 at 500 µg/µL concentration showed significant results compared to other varieties. FTIR was employed to determine the conformational changes and functional groups of organic compounds from sunflower seedlings. Tocopherol analysis by HPLC showed that magnetic treatment at 50 mT/45 min had a higher concentration of vitamin E compared to the control group. These modifications indicated that magnetic field induction enhanced seeds’ inner energy that led to seedlings’ growth and development enhancement. Besides, magnetic field pretreatment has been shown to have a beneficial influence on sunflower seeds and their bioactive compounds. Future studies should be focused on growth characteristics at the field level and yield attributes.

Karrikinolide alleviates BDE-28, heat and Cd stressors in Brassica alboglabra by correlating and modulating biochemical attributes, antioxidative machinery and osmoregulators

In this study, we have evaluated the role of karrikin (KAR¹) against the absorption and translocation of a persistent organic pollutant (POP), 2,4,4'-Tribromodiphenyl ether (BDE-28) in plants, in the presence of two other stressors, cadmium (Cd) and high temperature. Furthermore, it correlates the physiological damages of Brassica alboglabra with the three stresssors separately. The results revealed that the post-germination application of KAR¹ successfully augmented the growth (200%) and pertinent physiochemical parameters of B. alboglabra. KAR¹ hindered air absorption of BDE-28 in plant tissues, and reduced its translocation coefficient (TF). Moreover, BDE-28 was the most negatively correlated (-0.9) stressor with chlorophyll contents, while the maximum mitigation by KAR¹ was also achieved agaist BDE-28. The effect of temperature was more severe on soluble sugars (0.51), antioxidative machinery (-0.43), and osmoregulators (0.24). Cd exhibited a stronger inverse interrelation with the enzymatic antioxidant cascade. Application of KAR¹ mitigated the deleterious effects of Cd and temperature stress on plant physiological parameters along with reduced aero-concentration factor, TF, and metal tolerance index. The phytohormone reduced lipid peroxidation by decreasing synthesis of ROS and persuading its breakdown. The stability of cellular membranes was perhaps due to the commotion of KAR¹ as a growth-promoting phytohormone. In the same way, KAR¹ supplementation augmented the membrane stability index, antioxidant defense factors, and removal efficiency of the pollutants. Consequently, the exogenously applied KAR¹ can efficiently alleviate Cd stress, heat stress, and POP toxicity.

Interactive effect of potassium and cadmium on growth, root morphology and chlorophyll a fluorescence in tomato plant

A hydroponic experiment was conducted to evaluate the role of potassium (K) in tomato plant growth exposed to cadmium (Cd) stress. In this work, the effects of three potassium nutrition regimes (155, 232 and 310 ppm of K) combined with Cd at different levels (0, 12 and 25 µM of CdCl₂) on chlorophyll content index, root and shoot dry weights, root morphology, chlorophyll a fluorescence and translocation factor were analyzed. The results showed a negative effect of cadmium, at different concentrations, on all these parameters. However, optimization of K nutrition has shown promising results by limiting the negative effect of Cd. A positive effect of the high concentration of K (310 ppm) was observed on leaf chlorophyll content and chlorophyll a fluorescence compared to 232 and 155 ppm under Cd stress. K supply improved the electron transport at PSI side indicated by the increase in the amplitude of the I-P phase of OJIP transient. Also, K at a concentration of 310 ppm significantly reduced Cd translocation from root to shoot and improved root and shoot growth parameters in the presence of Cd. K supplementation can reduce the negative effect of Cd by improving photosynthesis and promoting chlorophyll synthesis. The optimization of nutrients composition and concentration might be a good strategy to reduce the impact of Cd on plant growth and physiology.

Combined effect of Bacillus fortis IAGS 223 and zinc oxide nanoparticles to alleviate cadmium phytotoxicity in Cucumis melo

Cadmium (Cd), prevailing in most of the agricultural lands of the world contaminates food chain, thereby causing several health implications. It has become the main heavy metal contaminant in most of the agricultural lands of Pakistan due to the widespread use of phosphate fertilizers besides application of irrigation water contaminated with industrial and mining effluents. Plant growth promoting bacteria (PGPB) are capable to enhance growth and metal stress tolerance in supplemented plants. Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) are capable to alleviate various abiotic stresses when applied to plants. During current research, the efficacy of single and combined application of Bacillus fortis IAGS 223 and ZnO-NPs was evaluated for alleviation of Cd (75 mg kg^-1) induced phytotoxicity in Cucumis melo plants. For this purpose, C. melo plants, subjected to Cd stress were treated with B. fortis IAGS 223 and ZnO-NPs (20 mg kg^-1), either alone or in combination. The growth relevant characteristics including photosynthetic pigments, hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂), malondialdehyde (MDA), and activities of antioxidative enzymes as well as Zn and Cd contents in treated plants were examined. The individual application of ZnO-NPs and B. fortis IAGS 223 slightly enhanced all the above-mentioned growth characteristics in plants under Cd stress. However, the combined application of ZnO-NPs and B. fortis IAGS-223 considerably modulated the activity of antioxidant enzymes besides upgradation of the biochemicals and growth parameters of Cd stressed plants. The decreased amount of stress markers such as H₂O₂, and MDA in addition with reduction of Cd contents was observed in shoots of ZnO-NPs and B. fortis IAGS-223 applied plants. B. fortis IAGS-223 inoculated plants supplemented with ZnO-NPs, exhibited reduced amount of Cd as well as protein bound thiols and non-protein bound thiols under Cd stress. Subsequently, the reduced Cd uptake improved growth of ZnO-NPs and B. fortis IAGS-223 applied plants. Henceforth, field trials may be performed to formulate appropriate combination of ZnO-NPs and B. fortis IAGS-223 to acquire sustainable crop production under Cd stress.

Potassium: A key modulator for cell homeostasis

Potassium (K) is the most vital and abundant macro element for the overall growth of plants and its deficiency or, excess concentration results in many diseases in plants. It is involved in regulation of many crucial roles in plant development. Depending on soil-root interactions, complex soil dynamics often results in unpredictable availability of the elements. Based on the importance index, K is considered to be the second only to nitrogen for the overall growth of plants. More than 60 enzymes within the plant system depend on K for its activation, in which K act as a key regulator. K helps plants to resist several abiotic and biotic stresses in the environment. We have reviewed the research progress about K's role in plants covering various important considerations of K highlighting the effects of microbes on soil K⁺; K and its contribution to adsorbed dose in plants; the importance of K⁺ deficiency; physiological functions of K⁺ transporters and channels; and interference of abiotic stressor in the regulatory role of K. This review further highlights the scope of future research regarding K.

Impacts of bamboo biochar on the phytoremediation potential of Salix psammophila grown in multi-metals contaminated soil

We investigated the effects of bamboo biochar (BBC) as soil amendment on growth and phytoremediation potential of Salix psammophila in soil heavily polluted by Cd and Zn. Bamboo biochar was added to soil at ratios ranging from 1 to 7% (w/w), which significantly increased the organic matter, available potassium (K) content, while decreased the hydrolyzable nitrogen (N) content and the levels of total and bioavailable HMs in soil. The BBC amendment at ratios of 1% to 5% showed little effect on growth of plant, whereas at 7% ratio significantly decreased biomass compared to the control. BBC amendment stimulated the accumulation of Cu, Cd and Zn in plant tissues, meanwhile, Cd and Zn accumulation were more evident, especially in the BBC-3% treatment. BBC amendment improved the TF and BCF values of Cd, Zn and Cu compared to control. Higher BCF for Cd (BCF >1) and TF for Zn (TF >1) values indicate Salix psammophila have considerable potential for phytoremediation efficiency in BBC amended soil treatment. This study provides practical evidence of the efficient BBC-assisted phytoremediation capability of Salix psammophila and highlights its potential as a viable and inexpensive approach for in situ remediation.

Effects of soil amendments on the growth response and phytoextraction capability of a willow variety (S. viminalis × S. schwerinii × S. dasyclados) grown in contaminated soils

This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of lime and bisphosphonates (BPs) such as N10O chelate amendment on the growth, physiological and biochemical parameters, and phytoextraction potential of the willow variety Klara (Salix viminalis × S. schwerinii × S. dasyclados) grown in soils heavily contaminated with copper (Cu), nickel (Ni) and zinc (Zn). The plants were irrigated with tap or processed water (mine wastewater). The results suggest that the combined effects of the contaminated soil and processed water inhibited growth parameters, gas exchange parameters and chlorophyll fluorescence (Fv/Fm) values. In contrast, malondialdehyde (MDA) content, organic acids, total phenolic and total flavonoid contents, and the accumulation of metals/metalloids in the plant tissues were increased compared to the control. When the soil was supplemented with lime and N10O; growth, physiological, biochemical parameters, and resistance capacity were significantly higher compared to unamended soil treatments, especially in the contaminated soil treatments. The combined lime‒ and N10O‒amended soil treatment produced higher growth rates, resistance capacity, photosynthesis rates and phytoextraction efficiency levels relative to either the lime‒amended or the N10O‒amended soil treatments. This study provides practical evidence of the efficient chelate‒assisted phytoextraction capability of Klara and highlights its potential as a viable and inexpensive novel approach for in situ remediation of Cu‒, Ni‒ and Zn‒contaminated soils and mine wastewaters.

A multivariate analysis of health risk assessment, phytoremediation potential, and biochemical attributes of Spinacia oleracea exposed to cadmium in the presence of organic amendments under hydroponic conditions

Cadmium (Cd) phytoremediation potential and its accumulation in edible and nonedible plant tissues is the function of various biochemical processes taking place inside plants. This study assessed the impact of organic ligands on Cd phyto uptake and different biophysiochemical processes of Spinacia oleracea L., and associated health hazards. Plants were exposed to Cd alone and chelated with citric acid (CA) and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA). Results revealed that the effect of Cd on lipid peroxidation, H₂O₂ production and pigment contents varied greatly with its applied level and the type of organic ligand. Moreover, the effect was more prominent in root tissues than leaf tissues and for high concentrations of Cd and organic ligands. Cadmium accumulation increased by 90 and 74% in roots and leaves, respectively, with increasing Cd levels (25-100 µM). Cadmium exposure at high levels caused lipid peroxidation in roots only. Application of both CA and EDTA slightly diminished Cd toxicity with respect to pigment contents, lipid peroxidation and hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) contents. Hazard quotient (HQ) of Cd was <1.00 for all the treatments. Under nonlinear effect of treatments, multivariate analysis can be an effective tool to trace overall effects/trends.

Evaluation of hyperaccumulation potentials to cadmium (Cd) in six ornamental species (compositae)

Phytoremediation is considered as a promising soil remediation technique. In the present study, the growth responses, cadmium (Cd) accumulation and uptake capability of six popular compositae species, namely, Taraxacum mongolicum Hand.-Mazz., Tagetes erecta L., Tagetes patula L., Zinnia elegans Jacq., Centaurea cyanus L. and Gerbera jamesonii Bolus under Cd stress were investigated. Among the six compositae species, the growth of T. erecta L. and T. patula L. improved under 10 mg kg^-1 Cd exposure in term of the total biomass and height increased along with the increased Cd concentration in soil, and the growth of the two plants had no significant differences at the high Cd concentration (100 mg kg^-1), which indicated that they have good tolerance to Cd toxicity. At the same time, the two plants have higher biomass than four other plants. Furthermore, they can accumulate Cd above 100 μg g^-1dry tissue, which is the threshold value of a Cd-hyperaccumulator, and have higher Cd uptake ability, translocation factor (TF) and bioconcentration factor (BCF) values. According to these traits, it was shown that T. erecta L. and T. patula L. had strong tolerance and accumulation capability to Cd, therefore they can become potential hyperaccumulators in phytoremediation of Cd-contaminated soils.

Halotolerant plant-growth promoting rhizobacteria modulate gene expression and osmolyte production to improve salinity tolerance and growth in Capsicum annum L

Some rhizobacteria have demonstrated a noteworthy role in regulation of plant growth and biomass production under biotic and abiotic stresses. The present study was intended to explicate the ameliorative consequences of halotolerant plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (HPGPR) on growth of capsicum plants subjected to salt stress. Salt stress was ascertained by supplementing 1 and 2 g NaCl kg^-1 soil. The HPGPR positively invigorated growth attributes, chlorophyll, protein contents, and water use efficiency (WUE) of supplemented capsicum plants under salinity stress conditions. Bacillus fortis strain SSB21 caused highest significant increase in shoot length, root length, and fresh and dry biomass production of capsicum plants grown under saline conditions. This multi-trait bacterium also increased biosynthesis of proline and up-regulated the expression profiles of stress related genes including CAPIP2, CaKR1, CaOSM1, and CAChi2. On the other hand, B. fortis strain SSB21 inoculated plants exhibited reduced level of ethylene, lipid peroxidation, and reactive oxygen species (ROS). All these together contribute to activate physiological and biochemical processes involved in the mitigation of the salinity induced stress in capsicum plants.
