Abstract
To date, more than 400 types of human papillomavirus (HPV) have been identified. Despite the creation of effective prophylactic vaccines against the most common genital HPVs, the viruses remain among the most prevalent pathogens found in humans. According to WHO data, they are the cause of 5% of all cancers. Even more frequent are persistent and recurrent benign lesions such as genital and common warts. HPVs are resistant to many disinfectants and relatively unsusceptible to external conditions. There is still no drug available to inhibit viral replication, and treatment is based on removing lesions or stimulating the host immune system. This paper presents the systematics of HPV and the differences in HPV structure between different genetic types, lineages, and sublineages, based on the literature and GenBank data. We also present the pathogenesis of diseases caused by HPV, with a special focus on the role played by E6, E7, and other viral proteins in the development of benign and cancerous lesions. We discuss further prospects for the treatment of HPV infections, including, among others, substances that block the entry of HPV into cells, inhibitors of viral early proteins, and some substances of plant origin that inhibit viral replication, as well as new possibilities for therapeutic vaccines.

Abstract
Breast cancer, a prevalent disease with significant mortality rates, often presents treatment challenges due to its complex genetic makeup. This review explores the potential of combining Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats (CRISPR)/CRISPR-associated protein 9 (Cas9) gene knockout strategies with immunotherapeutic approaches to enhance breast cancer treatment. The CRISPR/Cas9 system, renowned for its precision in inducing genetic alterations, can target and eliminate specific cancer cells, thereby minimizing off-target effects. Concurrently, immunotherapy, which leverages the immune system's power to combat cancer, has shown promise in treating breast cancer. By integrating these two strategies, we can potentially augment the effectiveness of immunotherapies by knocking out genes that enable cancer cells to evade the immune system. However, safety considerations, such as off-target effects and immune responses, necessitate careful evaluation. Current research endeavors aim to optimize these strategies and ascertain the most effective methods to stimulate the immune response. This review provides novel insights into the integration of CRISPR/Cas9-mediated knockout strategies and immunotherapy, a promising avenue that could revolutionize breast cancer treatment as our understanding of the immune system's interplay with cancer deepens.

Abstract
The human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine is effective in cervical cancer prevention. However, many barriers to uptake exist and strategies to overcome them are needed. Therefore, this study aimed to select and tailor implementation strategies to barriers identified by multiple stakeholders in Zambia. The study was conducted in Lusaka district between January and February 2023. Participants were purposively sampled from three stakeholder groups namely, adolescent girls, parents, and teachers and healthcare workers. With each of the stakeholders' groups (10-13 participants per group), we used the nominal group technique to gain consensus to tailor feasible and acceptable implementation strategies for mitigating the identified contextual barriers. The identified barriers included low levels of knowledge and awareness about the HPV vaccine, being out of school, poor community sensitisation, lack of parental consent to vaccinate daughters, and myths and misinformation about the HPV vaccine. The lack of knowledge and awareness of the HPV vaccine was a common barrier across the three groups. Tailored strategies included conducting educational meetings and consensus-building meetings, using mass media, changing service sites, re-examining implementation, and involving patients/consumers and their relatives. Our study contributes to the available evidence on the process of selecting and tailoring implementation strategies to overcome contextual barriers. Policymakers should consider these tailored strategies to mitigate barriers and improve HPV vaccine uptake.

Abstract
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are a major public health problem worldwide, with a high prevalence between the ages of 15 and 25 in most Western countries. High notification rates of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis are reported in the WHO European Region, with differences between countries. In Italy, the total number of STIs alerts increased by 18% from 2020 to 2021. HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection; globally one in seven women is infected by this virus, and certain sexual behaviors are important risk factors for HPV-related cancers, particularly cervical cancer (CC), anogenital cancers and cancers of the head and neck. The burden of CC is relevant worldwide, in particular in Europe CC is the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths in women aged 15-44. This HPV-related tumor is preventable through a combined strategy of vaccination and screening for precursor lesions. In Italy, the coverage of organized screening varies from region to region and the average HPV vaccination rate is still far from the expected optimal threshold of 95% at the age of 12. To address the challenges of health promotion and HPV prevention, priority actions are needed such as: promoting education and information at every level, from schools to healthcare professionals. In Italy, education of adolescents on sexual and reproductive health, still remains critical, regionally inhomogeneous and much lower than in other European countries. Equitable measures need to be taken, and schools are an important place for health promotion activities.

Abstract
Adolescents face an increased risk of contracting sexually transmitted infections (STIs) with alarming data especially concerning HIV. Limited data exists for teenagers regarding the influence of their gender identity (GI) and sexual orientation on the risk of STIs. This narrative review aims to analyse the available data to provide a comprehensive overview of STIs incidence and risk factors among adolescents, taking into account the unique circumstances related to various sexual orientations and GIs. Transgender and gender minority (TGM) youth experience more challenges accessing health services compared to cisgender youth. This is often attributed to non-inclusive health environments, barriers to obtaining medical gender affirmation, and an underestimation of sexual risk perception. Literature analysis has revealed that the majority of adolescents, both cisgender and TGM, have limited awareness regarding the risks associated with their sexual behaviors, the most common sexually transmitted diseases, and strategies for prevention, such as PrEP and HPV vaccination. Moreover, a significant portion of pediatricians possess limited knowledge and comfort in addressing various aspects of sexual health, particularly when it involves discussing topics such as sexual orientation, gender identity, and sexual behaviors with sexually active adolescents. This underscores the pressing need for enhanced education for pediatricians, specifically focusing on STIs diagnosis, prevention, and screening.

Abstract
We examined perceptions of vaccines and changes during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. From 2019 to 2021, a national sample of young gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men completed an open-ended survey item about vaccine perceptions. Analyses identified themes and polarity (negative, neutral, or positive) within responses and determined temporal changes across phases of the pandemic ("pre-pandemic," "pandemic," "initial vaccine availability," or "widespread vaccine availability"). Themes included health benefits of vaccines (53.9%), fear of shots (23.7%), COVID-19 (10.3%), vaccines being safe (5.6%), and vaccine hesitancy/misinformation (5.5%). Temporal changes existed for multiple themes (p < .05). Overall, 53.0% of responses were positive, 31.2% were negative, and 15.8% were neutral. Compared to the pre-pandemic phase, polarity was less positive for the widespread vaccine availability phase (odds ratio = 0.64, 95% confidence interval: 0.42-0.96). The findings provide insight into how vaccine perceptions change in concert with a public health emergency.

Abstract
Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a common sexually transmitted infection that can cause both benign and malignant lesions. HPV vaccines, preferably administered before the onset of sexual activity, have demonstrated remarkable efficacy in preventing HPV-related cancers. The impact of a healthcare provider's recommendation on HPV vaccine acceptance is substantial. Therefore, medical students must undergo thorough training in this domain. This study compares fundamental understanding and viewpoints regarding HPV and anti-HPV vaccines among Polish students pursuing medical and non-medical sciences. This study was based on the authors' questionnaire, and the results were statistically analyzed. The participants in this study were 1025 students (medical sciences students-520 respondents in total; and non-medical sciences students-505 respondents in total). According to the results, medical students' knowledge about the consequences of HPV infection and vaccination against HPV was significantly greater. To date, numerous publications have investigated the understanding of particular social, gender, parental, etc., groups about vaccination, but the knowledge of students at different universities-medical and other-has not been compared. Social awareness is still insufficient, even in groups of medical students. There is much to be done to educate and encourage preventive behavior in those not receiving primary prevention in early childhood.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVE Latino youths in the United States experience disproportionately high rates of teen pregnancy. The aim of this study was to obtain expecting and parenting Latino adolescents' perspectives regarding factors contributing to teen pregnancy and pregnancy prevention. METHODS Expecting/parenting Latino adolescents were recruited from high schools with high proportions of Latino youths and teen pregnancy. Participants completed a questionnaire on sociodemographic and background characteristics. Focus groups were stratified by age and gender and audio recorded. Grounded theory was used to identify themes from the transcribed audio recordings. RESULTS Thirty-two expecting/parenting Latino adolescents (20 females, 12 males) 14-19 years old participated in four focus groups. Quantitative results revealed that two-thirds of participants at birth had adolescent mothers. Over three-quarters of participants reported that their pregnancies had occurred too soon. Qualitative themes for factors contributing to teen pregnancy included lack of contraceptive knowledge/access, belief of invincibility, influence within relationships, male decisions on contraceptive use, desire to belong among peers, lack of parental support for contraceptive use, lack of parental attention, rebellion, normalization of adolescent parenthood in Latino culture, and media. Themes for pregnancy prevention included time alone with physicians, parenting teens as mentors, reproductive health education, and community pregnancy-prevention programs. CONCLUSION Multiple factors contribute to teen pregnancy in Latino youth, including influences from Latino culture, family, peers, partners, and social determinants of health. Pregnancy prevention should incorporate interventions to address these aspects, including disseminating culturally sensitive education materials, providing parenting teens as peer mentors, encouraging time alone with health care providers, and addressing various social determinants of health.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a prevalent sexually transmitted infection linked to certain types of malignant neoplasms, notably cervical cancer (CC). In Kazakhstan, a high prevalence of high oncogenic HPV types (HR-HPV) has been observed, and CC ranks as the second most common malignancy among women with a crude incidence rate of 18.3 cases per 100 000 women. The HPV vaccine, developed as the primary prevention measure against HPV infection, including the most prevalent HR-HPV, received approval from the WHO in 2009. In 2014, Kazakhstan initiated HPV vaccination as a pilot project in four sub-national regions; however, it was later in 2017 discontinued due to widespread parental refusal influenced by negative media reports. This study aims to examine knowledge, attitudes, information sources, barriers to HPV vaccination and factors associated with HPV vaccination hesitancy among different target groups in Kazakhstan prior to the HPV vaccine re-launch announced by the Ministry of Health. METHODS AND ANALYSIS This mixed-method-designed research comprises quantitative and qualitative components. Data on HPV awareness, attitudes towards HPV vaccination and sources of information will be collected through an online survey administered by parents and legal guardians, health professionals, and schoolteachers in the Republic of Kazakhstan between January 2023 and January 2024. Additionally, qualitative data on Kazakhstani parental beliefs and attitudes toward HPV vaccination will be collected through online focus group discussions. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION OF RESULTS The study has been approved by the local ethics committee at the Kazakhstan Medical University "Higher School of Public Health" (KMU "KSPH") (No. 138 of 31.05.2021). The results will be reported in publications, at conferences among researchers and healthcare and school education professionals in Kazakhstan, and internationally.

Abstract
Although vaccine misinformation has been a longstanding problem, the growth of social media and divides based on political ideology have raised novel concerns. One noteworthy example involves the Russian Internet Research Agency's deployment of operatives on Twitter (i.e., trolls) working to sow discord among the American public. We examine 1,959 tweets made by trolls between 2015 and 2017 about vaccination to better understand their efforts to spread vaccine misinformation. Our results indicate that misinformation was more likely to be perpetuated by left and right trolls than nonpartisan trolls. There was, however, relatively little user engagement with vaccine tweets containing misinformation and no differences in engagement with misinformation shared by partisan and nonpartisan trolls. Trends in the psycholinguistic properties of language in trolls' vaccine tweets suggest that right and left trolls were more likely to include cognitive process words (i.e., insight, causation, discrepancy, certainty, differentiation, and tentativeness) than were nonpartisan trolls.

Abstract
The development of vaccines is considered one of the greatest breakthroughs of modern medicine, saving millions of lives around the world each year. Despite vaccines' proven success, vaccine hesitancy remains a major issue affecting vaccine uptake. Common themes exist in patients' apprehension to receive vaccines. Women's health providers possess an important role in addressing these concerns and dispelling common misconceptions that may increase vaccine hesitancy thereby reduce vaccine uptake. This review aims to explore many of these topics as they are related to women's health and provide strategies for providers to implement which may reduce vaccine hesitancy among our patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES We sought to identify trends in the main reasons United States parents of unvaccinated children gave for not intending to vaccinate their adolescent children against HPV from 2010 to 2020. As interventions designed to increase vaccine uptake have been implemented across the United States, we predicted that reasons for hesitancy have changed over this period. METHODS We analyzed data from the 2010 to 2020 National Immunization Survey-Teen, which included 119 695 adolescents aged 13 to 17 years. Joinpoint regression estimated yearly changes in the top five cited reasons for not intending to vaccinate using annual percentage changes. RESULTS The five most frequently cited reasons for not intending to vaccinate included "not necessary," "safety concerns," "lack of recommendation," "lack of knowledge," and "not sexually active." Overall, parental HPV vaccine hesitancy decreased by 5.5% annually between 2010 and 2012 and then remained stable for the 9-year period of 2012 through 2020. The proportion of parents citing "safety or side effects" as a reason for vaccine hesitancy increased significantly by 15.6% annually from 2010 to 2018. The proportion of parents citing "not recommended," "lack of knowledge," or "child not sexually active" as reasons for vaccine hesitancy decreased significantly by 6.8%, 9.9%, and 5.9% respectively per year between 2013 and 2020. No significant changes were observed for parents citing "not necessary." CONCLUSIONS Parents who cited vaccine safety as a reason for not intending to vaccinate their adolescent children against HPV increased over time. Findings support efforts to address parental safety concerns surrounding HPV vaccination.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the association between human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination and risk of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Specifically, our study aimed to test the hypothesis that HPV vaccination may also induce trained immunity, which would potentially reduce the risk of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection and improve clinical outcomes. BACKGROUND Several vaccines have been reported to trigger non-specific immune reactions that could offer protection from heterologous infections. A recent case report showed that verruca vulgaris regressed after COVID-19, suggesting a possible negative association between COVID-19 and HPV infection. METHODS We enrolled 57,584 women with HPV vaccination and compared them with propensity score-matched controls who never received HPV vaccination in relation to the risk of COVID-19 incidence. Cox proportional hazard regression analysis was conducted to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Subgroup analyses stratified by age, race, comorbid asthma, and obesity were performed. RESULTS The risk of COVID-19 incidence was significantly lower in those who had recently received the HPV vaccine (within 1 year after HPV vaccination, aHR: 0.818, 95% CI 0.764-0.876; within 1-2 years after HPV vaccination, aHR: 0.890, 95% CI 0.824-0.961). Several limitations were recognized in this study, including residual confounding, problems of misclassification due to the use of electronic health record data, and that we were unable to keep track of the patients' HPV infection status and the HPV antibody levels in those who had received the vaccine. CONCLUSIONS Recent HPV vaccination was associated with a lower risk of incident COVID-19 and hospitalization. Based on the promising protective effect of HPV vaccine shown in this study, these findings should be replicated in an independent dataset. Further studies are needed to provide a better understanding of the underlying mechanisms and the differences in risks among 2-, 4-, or 9-valent HPV vaccine recipients.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVE Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination is proven to reduce the risk of HPV-associated cancers and lesions. Factors associated with HPV vaccine receipt or rejection have been studied, but specific maternal characteristics driving uptake among teens requires further investigation. The aim of this study was to examine maternal characteristics influencing teen vaccine uptake and intent to vaccinate. STUDY DESIGN Cross-sectional analysis METHODS: We analyzed data on 27,320 teens aged 13-17 using the 2020 National Immunization Survey-Teen. We constructed regression models to determine the associations, via relative risk, between child vaccination status and maternal characteristics. RESULTS Compared with mothers with less education, those with a college degree were significantly more likely to have their children receive HPV vaccination (RR = 1.18; 95% CI, 1.11-1.26). Compared to mothers under 35 years, those aged 35-44 (RR 1.07; 95% CI 1.01-1.14) and over 45 (RR = 1.13; 95% CI, 1.07-1.21) were more likely to provide HPV vaccination to their child. Among children not previously vaccinated (n = 12,098; N = 5,752,355), educated mothers were significantly less likely to report intent to vaccinate their child in the next year. There was no significant difference in vaccination rates in mothers who were married compared with never married (RR = 0.99; 95% CI, 0.97-1.02). CONCLUSION Maternal education was the strongest predictor of teens receiving the HPV vaccine. Among mothers with teens not previously vaccinated, intent to obtain the HPV vaccine for their child was higher among mothers with less education compared with college-level educated mothers. Understanding maternal characteristics driving HPV vaccine hesitancy can inform targeted approaches to improve vaccine uptake in children. Additionally, adequate and consistent health messaging on the safety, efficacy, and benefits of HPV vaccination from health providers and public health agencies could increase uptake among adolescents and teens of vaccine-hesitant mothers.

Abstract
(1) Background: Premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) has been linked to human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccination in small case-reports. The aim of this meta-analysis was to evaluate the risk of POI after HPV vaccination. (2) Methods: Electronic searches in MEDLINE Scopus, LILACS, ClinicalTrials.gov, EMBASE, PROSPERO, Cochrane CENTRAL and other registries were searched from inception to September 2022. Inclusion criteria were cohort studies of female children or adolescents vaccinated with quadrivalent (4vHPV), bivalent (2vHPV) or 9-valent (9vHPV) vaccine and compared to unvaccinated, other HPV vaccine, or vaccinated with other childhood vaccine girls. Primary outcome was risk of POI after vaccination. (3) Results: Four studies, including 1,253,758 patients, were included. Overall, there was no significant risk for POI between 4vHPV and controls (unvaccinated or other vaccines) (RR 0.47 (95% CI 0.14 to 1.59) I2 = 75%), or unvaccinated only controls (RR 0.75 (95% CI 0.22 to 2.49) I2 = 26%). One study reported a significant reduction of POI risk for 4vHPV relative to the other childhood vaccinations (RR 0.03 (95% CI 0.00 to 0.21)); meanwhile, one study showed no increased risk with 4vHPV relative to 2vHPV and 9vHPV (RR 0.93 (95% CI 0.33 to 2.64)). (4) Conclusions: 4vHPV vaccination does not seem to increase risk of POI relative to unvaccinated people or other childhood vaccines. No difference was seen with 4vHPV vaccine relative to 2vHPV and 9vHPV. Moreover, the risk of POI after HPV vaccination is relatable to worldwide incidence, giving reassurance about safety.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVES Annually, HPV infections result in $775 million in direct medical costs and approximately 46 000 new cases of HPV-associated cancers. Safe and highly effective vaccines have been available to prevent HPV for children/adolescents since 2006. Vaccination rates remain low, especially in rural areas. Parental attitudes and beliefs affect HPV vaccination rates. METHODS We developed, tested, and administered a survey that asked how parents and healthcare providers interacted about the HPV vaccine following a healthcare visit with an age-eligible child, as part of a multicomponent randomized controlled trial designed to improve HPV vaccination rates in rural Oregon. The 21-item survey assessed parents' information-seeking behavior, knowledge about HPV cancer risk reduction, the HPV vaccine series, and their vaccine confidence. RESULTS Forty-three participants (59.7%) were in the intervention group; 29 (40.3%) were controls. Over 90% of healthcare visits were illness, injury, sports physical, or well-child visits (n = 67 or 93.1%), and 6.9% of visits were vaccine-specific. No statistically significant differences were found between study groups for healthcare visits. Over half the parents reported having discussions about HPV and the HPV vaccine (54.5%) with their care providers, 31.3% had recently learned about HPV, HPV risks, and the HPV vaccine prior to the visit, 83.1% were knowledgeable about cancers associated with HPV, and 79.2% were considering vaccinating their child(ren), which did not differ between study groups. CONCLUSIONS Knowledge about HPV-related cancers and consideration for vaccinating children was higher than expected, but not associated with the intervention tested.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination rates are low in young adults. Clinical decision support (CDS) in primary care may increase HPV vaccination. We tested the treatment effect of algorithm-driven, web-based, and electronic health record-linked CDS with or without shared decision-making tools (SDMT) on HPV vaccination rates compared to usual care (UC). METHODS In a clinic cluster-randomized control trial conducted in a healthcare system serving a largely rural population, we randomized 34 primary care clinic clusters (with three clinics sharing clinicians randomized together) to: CDS; CDS+SDMT; UC. The sample included young adults aged 18-26 due for HPV vaccination with a study index visit from 08/01/2018-03/15/2019 in a study clinic. Generalized linear mixed models tested differences in HPV vaccination status 12 months after index visits by study arm. RESULTS Among 10,253 patients, 6,876 (65.2%) were due for HPV vaccination, and 5,054 met study eligibility criteria. In adjusted analyses, the HPV vaccination series was completed by 12 months in 2.3% (95% CI: 1.6%-3.2%) of CDS, 1.6% (95% CI: 1.1%-2.3%) of CDS+SDMT, and 2.2% (95% CI: 1.6%-3.0%) of UC patients, and at least one HPV vaccine was received by 12 months in 13.1% (95% CI: 10.6%-16.1%) of CDS, 9.2% (95% CI: 7.3%-11.6%) of CDS+SDMT, and 11.2% (95% CI: 9.1%-13.7%) of UC patients. Differences were not significant between arms. Females, those with prior HPV vaccinations, and those seen at urban clinics had significantly higher odds of HPV vaccination in adjusted models. Abstract
In this work, we study the dynamical behavior of a modified SIR epidemiological model by introducing negative feedback and a nonpharmaceutical intervention. The first model to be defined is the Susceptible–Isolated–Infected–Recovered–Dead (SAIRD) epidemics model and then the S-A-I-R-D-Information Index (SAIRDM) model that corresponds to coupling the SAIRD model with the negative feedback. Controlling the information about nonpharmaceutical interventions is considered by the addition of a new variable that measures how the behavioral changes about isolation influence pandemics. An analytic expression of a replacement ratio that depends on the absence of the negative feedback is determined. Abstract
Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination can prevent numerous cancers, yet uptake remains low for adolescents. Given disproportionate burden of cancers among African Americans, it is important to identify factors that influence HPV vaccination decisions among African American parents, specifically the role and preferences of vaccine campaign messages. The objectives of this study were to (1) identify the predictors of parents' decisions to get their children vaccinated against HPV, (2) assess parents' evaluation of current HPV vaccination campaign messages, and (3) uncover message strategies or themes parents consider to be effective and motivating to vaccinate their children against HPV. Focus groups were conducted with African American mothers and fathers (n = 18) in person. Several themes emerged regarding HPV vaccine acceptability including the desire to be informed, the unfamiliarity of vaccination, and mistrust toward government, pharmaceutical companies, and healthcare providers. Parental review of existing campaign messages highlighted the importance of clarifying risks and benefits of vaccination, including cancer prevention, and the preference for straightforward language. When brainstorming strategies to craft effective messages, parents highlighted need for the inclusion of diverse groups across race, gender, and age. Additionally, parents recommended clear language on side effects, eligibility, and additional resources for further information. Our findings highlight concerns and potential strategies to promote HPV vaccination tailored to African American parents and their children. Targeted interventions to increase vaccination need to consider the importance of building trust and representation in health promotional materials. Considerations for how messages were shared were also discussed such as physical locations, word of mouth, and social media.

Abstract
Amid subpar uptake of HPV vaccination in the United States, gender-generated disparities in HPV vaccination uptake have the potential to perpetuate existing disparities in HPV-associated cancers. Yet few studies have investigated the influence of parent-child gender on intentions to refuse HPV vaccination due to safety concerns/side effects. This study used nationally representative data, spanning 2010-2019, from the National Immunization Survey-Teen (NIS-Teen). NIS-Teen respondents are parents/guardians or primary caregivers of adolescents 13-17 years old living in the United States. Over the study period, intentions to refuse HPV vaccination due to safety concerns rose among all parent-child gender pairings but were highest among respondent mothers regarding their unvaccinated daughters. The results revealed a statistically significant increased likelihood of having intentions to refuse HPV vaccination due to safety concerns among all parent-child combinations compared with father-son pairs. These odds were consistently highest among mother-daughter pairs. In 2019, compared with father-son pairs, fathers were 1.94 (95% CI: 1.21-3.12) times more likely to report the intention to not vaccinate against HPV for their daughters, while mothers were 2.23 (95% CI: 1.57-3.17) and 2.87 (95% CI: 2.02-4.09) times more likely to report intentions to refuse HPV vaccination for their sons and daughters, respectively. These findings were persistent and constantly increased over the 10-year study period. Interventions aimed at correcting gender-based misperceptions and countering misinformation about the safety of the HPV vaccine are warranted.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Despite its benefits, HPV vaccine uptake has been historically lower than other recommended adolescent vaccines in the United States (US). While hesitancy and misinformation have threatened vaccinations for many years, the adverse impacts from COVID-19 pandemic on preventive services have been far-reaching. OBJECTIVES To explore the perceptions and experiences of adolescent healthcare providers regarding routine vaccination services during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODOLOGY Between December 2020 and May 2021, in-depth qualitative interviews were conducted via Zoom video conferencing among a purposively selected, diverse group of adolescent healthcare providers (n = 16) within 5 healthcare practices in the US southeastern states of Georgia and Tennessee. Audio recordings were transcribed verbatim and analyzed using a rapid qualitative analysis framework. Our analysis was guided by the grounded theory and inductive approach. RESULTS Participants reported that patient-provider communications; effective use of presumptive languaging; provider's continuing education/training; periodic reminders/recall messages; provider's personal conviction on vaccine safety/efficacy; early initiation of HPV vaccination series at 9 years; community partnerships with community health navigators/vaccine champions/vaccine advocates; use of standardized forms/prewritten scripts/standard operating protocols for patient-provider interactions; and vaccine promotion through social media, brochures/posters/pamphlets as well as outreaches to schools and churches served as facilitators to adolescent HPV vaccine uptake. Preventive adolescent services were adversely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic at all practices. Participants highlighted an initial decrease in patients due to the pandemic, while some practices avoided the distribution of vaccine informational materials due to sanitary concerns. CONCLUSION As part of a larger study, we provided contextual information to refine an intervention package currently being developed to improve adolescent preventive care provision in healthcare practices. Our results could inform the implementation of comprehensive intervention strategies that improve HPV vaccination rates. Additionally, lessons learned (e.g. optimizing patient- provider interactions) could be adopted to expand COVID-19 vaccine acceptance on a sizable scale.

Abstract
Immunization is the most successful method in preventing and controlling infectious diseases, which has helped saving millions of lives worldwide. The discovery of the human papillomavirus (HPV) infection being associated with a variety of benign conditions and cancers has driven the development of prophylactic HPV vaccines. Currently, four HPV vaccines are available on the pharmaceutical market: Cervarix, Gardasil, Gardasil-9, and the recently developed Cecolin. Multiple studies have proven the HPV vaccines' safety and efficacy in preventing HPV-related diseases. Since 2006, when the first HPV vaccine was approved, more than 100 World Health Organization member countries reported the implementation of HPV immunization. However, HPV vaccination dread, concerns about its safety, and associated adverse outcomes have a significant impact on the HPV vaccine implementation campaigns all over the world. Many developed countries have successfully implemented HPV immunization and achieved tremendous progress in preventing HPV-related conditions. However, there are still many countries worldwide which have not created, or have not yet implemented, HPV vaccination campaigns, or have failed due to deficient realization plans associated with establishing successful HPV vaccination programs. Lack of proper HPV information campaigns, negative media reflection, and numerous myths and fake information have led to HPV vaccine rejection in many states. Thus, context-specific health educational interventions on HPV vaccination safety, effectiveness, and benefits are important to increase the vaccines' acceptance for efficacious prevention of HPV-associated conditions.

Abstract
IntroductionVaccination against HPV is safe and effective in cancer prevention, yet vaccination uptake remains low. Strong recommendation of HPV vaccination by healthcare providers increases immunization rates, but gaps in knowledge persist surrounding HPV and HPV vaccination amongst health professional students (HPS). It is critical to educate HPS in all professions to maximize vaccination opportunities and increase vaccine uptake. The objective of this study is to evaluate evidence on HPV knowledge, vaccine uptake, and educational interventions in HPS to identify specific deficits to improve education.MethodsA systematic literature search for articles on HPV vaccine uptake, knowledge, and educational interventions in HPS was performed in PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, CINAHL, and Scopus from January 1, 2006 – July 21, 2021. Included studies assessed HPS for HPV vaccine uptake, knowledge, counseling comfort, or educational interventions to increase HPV vaccine knowledge. Studies were screened for inclusion by 2 independent reviewers and evaluated for risk of bias. PRISMA guidelines for reporting were followed.ResultsTwenty-one unique articles met inclusion criteria and were included in the analysis. Of the studies included, 20 included knowledge, 11 included vaccine uptake, 8 included interventions, and 12 included counseling comfort. The students in the studies included medical (n=14), dental (n=7), dental hygiene (n=6), nursing (n=3), physician assistant (n=2), public health (n=1), and pharmacy (n=1). Across studies, HPV vaccine series initiation ranged from 34.6-70.3%, with 28.3-58.3% up to date on vaccination. Most students knew that HPV causes cervical cancer (99%), but fewer knew that HPV causes head and neck cancer (40-47%) and oropharyngeal cancer (45%). Educational interventions included team-based approaches and lectures, and improved outcomes including vaccine knowledge, vaccination schedule, and cancer knowledge. Medical students with lower knowledge of HPV were more hesitant to recommend vaccination at baseline but were more likely to recommend vaccination after an education session.DiscussionAcross HPS, inadequacies persist in HPV vaccine uptake, knowledge, and counseling comfort. It is critical to target vaccine uptake in this population and improve existing educational efforts to reduce preventable cancers. Institutions must prioritize HPV vaccine education to impact HPV related death.

Passive Immunization with a Single Monoclonal Neutralizing Antibody Protects against Cutaneous and Mucosal Mouse Papillomavirus Infections. J Virol 2022; 96:e0070322. Abstract
We have established a mouse papillomavirus (MmuPV1) model that induces both cutaneous and mucosal infections and cancers. In the current study, we use this model to test our hypothesis that passive immunization using a single neutralizing monoclonal antibody can protect both cutaneous and mucosal sites at different time points after viral inoculation. We conducted a series of experiments involving the administration of either a neutralizing monoclonal antibody, MPV.A4, or control monoclonal antibodies to both outbred and inbred athymic mice. Three clinically relevant mucosal sites (lower genital tract for females and anus and tongue for both males and females) and two cutaneous sites (muzzle and tail) were tested. At the termination of the experiments, all tested tissues were harvested for virological analyses. Significantly lower levels of viral signals were detected in the MPV.A4-treated female mice up to 6 h post-viral inoculation compared to those in the isotype control. Interestingly, males displayed partial protection when they received MPV.A4 at the time of viral inoculation, even though they were completely protected when receiving MPV.A4 at 24 h before viral inoculation. We detected MPV.A4 in the blood starting at 1 h and up to 8 weeks postadministration in some mice. Parallel to these in vivo studies, we conducted in vitro neutralization using a mouse keratinocyte cell line and observed complete neutralization up to 8 h post-viral inoculation. Thus, passive immunization with a monoclonal neutralizing antibody can protect against papillomavirus infection at both cutaneous and mucosal sites and is time dependent. IMPORTANCE This is the first study testing a single monoclonal neutralizing antibody (MPV.A4) by passive immunization against papillomavirus infections at both cutaneous and mucosal sites in the same host in the mouse papillomavirus model. We demonstrated that MPV.A4 administered before viral inoculation can protect both male and female athymic mice against MmuPV1 infections at cutaneous and mucosal sites. MPV.A4 also offers partial protection at 6 h post-viral inoculation in female mice. MPV.A4 can be detected in the blood from 1 h to 8 weeks after intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection. Interestingly, males were only partially protected when they received MPV.A4 at the time of viral inoculation. The failed protection in males was due to the absence of neutralizing MPV.A4 at the infected sites. Our findings suggest passive immunization with a single monoclonal neutralizing antibody can protect against diverse papillomavirus infections in a time-dependent manner in mice.

Abstract
Oral papilloma lesions may appear as a result of HPV infection, or not, and only special molecular methods could differentiate them. Low-risk and high-risk HPV types could induce oral HPV papillomatosis with different natural evolution, clearance and persistence mechanisms. The pathogenic mechanisms are based on the crosstalk between the oral epithelial and immune cells and this very efficient virus. HPV acts as a direct inducer in the process of transforming a benign lesion into a malignant one, the cancerization process being also debated in this paper. According to the degree of malignity, three types of papillomatous lesions can be described in the oral cavity: benign lesions, potential malign disorders and malignant lesions. The precise molecular diagnostic is important to identify the presence of various virus types and also the virus products responsible for its oncogenicity. An accurate diagnostic of oral papilloma can be established through a good knowledge of etiological and epidemiological factors, clinical examination and laboratory tests. This review intends to update the pathogenic mechanisms driving the macroscopic and histological features of oral papillomatosis having HPV infection as the main etiological factor, focusing on its interreference in the local immunity. In the absence of an accurate molecular diagnostic and knowledge of local immunological conditions, the therapeutic strategy could be difficult to decide.

Abstract
PURPOSE Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination coverage remains suboptimal with a global vaccination rate ranging from 12 to 90%. This review examined the approaches used by healthcare professionals in improving the uptake of HPV vaccine and reducing vaccine misconceptions among adolescents. METHODS A systematic review of literature between 2007 and 2021 was conducted using five databases: CINAHL, MEDLINE, PsycInfo, Scopus and ASSIA. Studies that examined healthcare professional's promotional strategies in improving the HPV vaccine uptake in adolescents were included. Two researchers independently reviewed study selection, data extraction, and study methodological quality. Results were analysed and synthesised using narrative synthesis. RESULTS Twelve studies met the inclusion criteria. Studies reported on effective approaches used by healthcare professionals to improve vaccine uptake including the use of multi-settings to target hard-to-reach vulnerable adolescents; consistently recommending the vaccine; and initiating the vaccine before the age of eleven. In addressing vaccine misconceptions, open-communication, motivational approaches, and sexual health education were effective strategies used. CONCLUSION This review found that healthcare professionals need to be better informed and educated on HPV vaccine to reduce their own vaccine hesitancy. Uptake of HPV vaccine can be improved by adopting better communication, engagement, supportive information resources, and training for healthcare professionals.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Evaluation of a quality improvement project designed to improve HPV vaccine uptake in a pediatric primary care setting for young adolescents. METHOD Three strategies were implemented in one private pediatric practice to promote HPV vaccine uptake for 11- and 12-year-old adolescents. 1) a standardized vaccine policy change was made to include HPV vaccine with other adolescent vaccines, 2) a pre-visit email was sent to parents of teens to provide factual vaccine information in preparation for the visit, and 3) a provider communication initiative was implemented to ensure all providers communicated consistent messages and delivered an effective cancer prevention recommendation for HPV vaccination. A pre/post design was used to compare vaccine rates. Data was obtained via the electronic health records. RESULTS The post-intervention group demonstrated HPV vaccine rates increased substantially from 17.8% to 63.6%. DISCUSSION Strategically implementing standardized clinical vaccine policies and presumprive provider communication practices has implications for significantly increasing HPV vaccine uptake among teens and may be key to preventing cancer among future generations.

Abstract
Colorectal cancer is the third most prevalent malignancy in Western countries and a major cause of death despite recent improvements in screening programs and early detection methods. In the last decade, a growing effort has been put into better understanding how the immune system interacts with cancer cells. Even if treatments with immune checkpoint inhibitors (anti-PD1, anti-PD-L1, anti-CTLA4) were proven effective for several cancer types, the benefit for colorectal cancer patients is still limited. However, a subset of patients with deficient mismatch repair (dMMR)/microsatellite-instability-high (MSI-H) metastatic colorectal cancer has been observed to have a prolonged benefit to immune checkpoint inhibitors. As a result, pembrolizumab and nivolumab +/- ipilimumab recently obtained the Food and Drug Administration approval. This review aims to highlight the body of knowledge on immunotherapy in the colorectal cancer setting, discussing the potential mechanisms of resistance and future strategies to extend its use.

Abstract
Human papillomavirus (HPV) infections cause more than 35,900 cancers annually in the United States. Although cervical cancer is the most prevalent HPV-related malignancy in women, the virus is also responsible for a significant percentage of anal, vaginal, and vulvar cancers. A comprehensive approach to mitigating cervical cancer includes HPV vaccination (primary prevention), screening and treatment of precancerous lesions (secondary prevention), and diagnosis and treatment of invasive cancer (tertiary prevention). Although a successful strategy, there are opportunities to innovate and increase access that can also be adapted to address the unique clinical care gaps that exist with the other anogenital cancers. The Society for Women's Health Research held a series of interdisciplinary meetings and events, during which expert researchers, clinicians, patient advocates, and health care policy leaders evaluated the current landscape of HPV-related cancers and their effects on women's health. This report summarizes the discussions of this working group and areas it identified in which to address gaps in primary and secondary prevention approaches to improve access and health outcomes for women with HPV-related anogenital cancers.

Abstract
In September 2017, Hurricane Maria devastated the Caribbean region, among them the US territory of Puerto Rico (PR). Vaccination distribution and uptake suffered from the impact. This study evaluated the trends in monthly vaccination initiation rates for human papilloma virus (HPV), Tdap and meningococcal conjugate (MenACWY) adolescent vaccines from 2015 to 2019, during which it was possible to observe and analyze the impact of Hurricane Maria on vaccine initiation. Monthly initiation rates were estimated. Age-standardized initiation rate ratio (SRR) and 95% CI were estimated. The analysis included 85,340 adolescents; 52.3% were male, and 47.7% were females. September 2017 showed HPV vaccine initiation had the lower rates of all the studied vaccines, with a rate of 75% after the disaster (from a rate of almost 90% in July 2017). Tdap and MenACWY vaccines rates remained above 90% in the same period. The SRR of HPV vaccine for September and October 2017 showed an estimated reduction of 5% and 8% in vaccine initiation rates, respectively for each month, when 2016 was the reference year (p > .05). The SRR of Tdap and MenACWY vaccines for November 2017 showed significant reductions when 2015 and 2016 were reference years (p < .05). HPV vaccine initiation rate was the most severely affected by the Hurricane Maria. Post-natural disaster protocols should strengthen existing programs for facilitate immunization access.

Abstract
Vaccination of the population seems to be an important strategy in halting the COVID-19 pandemic in both local and global society. The aim of this study was to explore Swedish adolescents' willingness to be vaccinated against COVID-19 and its association with sociodemographic and other possible factors. A survey was distributed in Sweden between 7 July and 8 November 2020. The main qualitative question concerned adolescents' thoughts on vaccination against COVID-19 and evaluated whether the adolescents would like to be vaccinated when a COVID-19 vaccine is made available. In total, 702 adolescents aged between 15 and 19 responded to the questionnaire. A convergent parallel mixed-methods design was used. The results showed that nearly one in three adolescents had not decided if they wanted to get a COVID-19 vaccine, i.e. 30.5%: n = 214. Of the participants 54.3% (n = 381) were willing to be vaccinated. Girls had higher levels of anxiety about the vaccine compared to boys. In addition, high levels of anxiety impacted on the participants' willingness to be vaccinated. One reason for being undecided about the vaccine was that participants felt they did not know enough about it. Practising social distancing increased willingness to be vaccinated, as reflected in the qualitative results which showed participants wanted to be vaccinated to protect others. The results impart important knowledge to healthcare professionals and contribute to their communication with adolescents about vaccine hesitancy.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Understanding the association between sleep-related beliefs and behaviors may be useful in improving sleep health in the general population. This study examines false beliefs about sleep and their associations with self-reported sleep and related behaviors. METHODS Respondents in an online survey indicated the degree to which they agreed with 20 statements previously identified as sleep myths by experts in the field. A total sleep myths score was calculated for each participant, with higher scores reflecting greater false beliefs. Sociodemographic factors, behaviors, and knowledge related to sleep were also assessed. RESULTS Total sample size was 1120 adults residing in the United States (51.5% female; M age = 47.22). Overall, belief in sleep myths was relatively common, with 10 of 20 false statements endorsed by at least 50% of the sample. Sleep myth scores varied by sociodemographic factors, including age, gender, socioeconomic indicators, and region of residence. Higher sleep myth scores were associated with greater inconsistency in bedtimes (odds ratio: 1.07 [1.04-1.09]), more frequent napping (odds ratio: 1.11 [1.09-1.14]), more in-bed activities (β = 0.35, p < .001), engaging in behaviors incompatible with sleep hygiene recommendations (β = 0.24, p < .001), and perceiving fewer consequences of insufficient sleep (β = -0.13, p < .001). Those endorsing more myths reported shorter sleep on non-worknights (β = -0.09, p = .01) but not on worknights. CONCLUSIONS Belief in sleep myths is related to sleep health behavior and may be a modifiable target for intervention.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The Human papillomavirus vaccine (HPV) is an essential tool for the prevention of HPV-related cancers. In Puerto Rico, the Secretary of Health established a school entry requirement of at least one dose of HPV vaccination in girls and boys aged 11 and 12 years, taking effect in August 2018. Our study aimed to examine parents' and guardians' views of unvaccinated children about the process of implementation of the new HPV vaccination school entry policy in Puerto Rico and identify potential barriers and facilitators related to the implementation of this requirement. METHODS During April through November 2019, we conducted three focus groups (n = 12) and eight in-depth semi-structured interviews with parents of children aged 11 and 12 who had not yet initiated the HPV vaccine series. The interview topics addressed were: perception of vaccination, HPV vaccine and it is inclusion as new school entry requirement practice, procedure of the sources of information, influencers, and willingness to change. The interviews were recorded and transcribed by our staff members. We identified emergent themes through thematic analysis. RESULTS The participants' perspective on the HPV vaccine school requirement was mixed. Lack of information of the HPV vaccines and lack of communication about the school-entry requirement were the themes most mentioned in the interviews. Moreover, previous negative experiences from friends or family members and adverse effects deterred some participants from vaccinating their kids. We discussed barriers in the process of soliciting an exemption. CONCLUSION Most barriers mentioned by study participants are modifiable. Information about the HPV vaccine mandate's implementation and educational materials regarding HPV vaccine safety need to be provided to address parents' concerns related to the vaccine's side effects. Schools (teachers, principal directors, and administrative staff), the government, and parent organizations need to be part of these efforts. This multilevel approach will help to improve disseminating information about HPV vaccination to clarify doubts and misinformation among parents.

Abstract
Following a successful Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccination pilot in 2013-2015 in Kitui county, Kenya introduced the HPV vaccine in October 2019 with a goal to immunize approximately 800,000 girls annually against HPV. Our study assessed the knowledge, attitudes, and practice of affected groups towards HPV infection and vaccination in two counties of Kenya. Semi-structured interviews from children aged between nine and thirteen years and key informants comprising of parents, head teachers, community leaders and health workers involved in HPV vaccination in health facilities from Mombasa and Tana-River counties were conducted. Content was analyzed thematically and coded for emerging themes using the QRS Nvivo 12 Plus (QRS International, Doncaster, Australia) software package. From our findings, a significant proportion of participants, especially children, have limited knowledge of the subject. Vaccination of boys was opposed by most participants. Parents and the community members are not in favor of HPV vaccination, as compared to the other groups. A similar pattern of inadequate knowledge and strongly opposed attitudes was observed in Tana-River and Mombasa. Active community involvement in primary prevention strategies may promote the uptake of the vaccine which can be achieved by robust awareness, modifying the negative beliefs about HPV vaccine and encouraging the perceptibility of HPV vaccination.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Human papillomavirus (HPV) is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections and can be prevented by vaccination. The purpose of this study is to gain a better understanding, by analysing interview responses of adolescents and parents, of how adolescent sexual behaviour is approached in families, how widespread knowledge about HPV is in Andalusia, the autonomous region with the lowest vaccination rate in Spain, as well as to learn more about the interviewees' position regarding vaccination. METHODS A qualitative study by means of 15 focus groups of adolescents (N = 137, aged 14-17 years) and five focus groups of parents with children of those ages (N = 37) was conducted in the provinces of Granada, Seville and Jaén (Andalusia, Spain). The audio data were transcribed verbatim, coded and analysed thematically using NVIVO-10 software. RESULTS There were three major results: (1) There is a lack of communication between adolescents and parents regarding sexual behaviour; (2) In both groups, scarce knowledge about HPV and vaccination was found; (3) Parents mistrust vaccination due to a lack of qualified and verified information about its benefits. CONCLUSIONS Healthy adolescent sexual behaviour is aided by communication within the family. Families need more information based on the evidence about HPV and vaccination. Health professionals are a key element in this process.

Abstract
The identification of the human papillomavirus (HPV) as the causative agent of multiple cancers allowed for the development of vaccines and immunization strategies to prevent cancers caused by HPV infection. The public health ramifications of reduction of HPV disease burden are momentous in scope. Vaccine hesitancy has impacted widespread vaccination, but strategies have been identified to combat vaccine safety and efficacy misinformation and promote immunization.

Abstract
Georgia experiences higher human papillomavirus (HPV)-associated cancer burden and lower HPV vaccine uptake compared with national estimates. Using the P3 model that concomitantly assesses practice-, provider- and patient-level factors influencing health behaviors, we examined facilitators of and barriers to HPV vaccine promotion and uptake in Georgia. In 2018, we conducted six focus groups with 55 providers. Questions focused on multilevel facilitators of and barriers to HPV vaccine promotion and uptake. Our analysis was guided by the P3 model and a deductive coding approach. We found that practice-level influences included organizational priorities of vaccinations, appointment scheduling, immunization registries/records, vaccine availability and coordination with community resources. Provider-level influences included time constraints, role, vaccine knowledge, self-efficacy to discuss HPV vaccine and vaccine confidence. Patient-level influences included trust, experiences with vaccine-preventable diseases, perceived high costs, perceived side effects and concerns with sexual activity. Findings suggest that interventions include incentives to boost vaccine rates and incorporate appointment scheduling technology. An emphasis should be placed on the use of immunization registries, improving across-practice information exchange, and providing education for providers on HPV vaccine. Patient-provider communication and trust emerge as intervention targets. Providers should be trained in addressing patient concerns related to costs, side effects and sexual activity.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Asian-Americans have been documented to have low human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine initiation and completion. No research has attempted to examine underlying mechanisms of HPV vaccine uptake disparities among Asian-Americans. Using the P3 (practice, provider, and patient) model, this study aimed to identify practice-, provider-, and patient-level determinants of Asian-Americans' HPV vaccine intention and uptake. METHODS We conducted a systematic review of published literature regarding practice-, provider- and patient-level determinants of vaccine intention (e.g., intention, willingness, or acceptability) and uptake (e.g., initiation or completion). Eligible studies were those presenting empirical/original data, focusing on Asian populations in the U.S., including outcomes related to HPV vaccine intention and uptake, and analyzing data on factors associated with these outcomes separately for Asian groups. RESULTS Twenty-six studies (19 quantitative and 7 qualitative studies) were included in the review. Most commonly studied subgroups were Koreans (n = 9), Chinese (n = 6), and Cambodians (n = 5). Studies showed varied prevalence across subgroups (intention: 23.4%-72%; initiation: 14%-67%; completion: 9%-63%). Only 3 studies included measurements of practice-level determinants (language services, insurance policy). Twelve studies measured provider-level determinants (most commonly documented: HPV vaccine recommendation). All studies measured patient-level determinants (most commonly documented: HPV and HPV vaccine knowledge, perceived safety, perceived susceptibility, and perceived relationship between HPV vaccine and sexual activity). CONCLUSIONS Existing research on determinants of HPV vaccine intention and uptake among Asian-Americans currently lacks measurements of practice-level constructs and perspectives of clinic staff and providers, which are needed to guide system-level interventions and provider training. Data regarding patient-level determinants suggest that interventions for Asian-American populations can focus on providing educational information in culturally-appropriate manners, leveraging familial influences, and attending to access-related or cultural beliefs about HPV vaccine. Interventions should take into account varied vaccine intention and uptake prevalence in different Asian subgroups.

Abstract
Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination acceptance is hampered by fears and conflicting attitudes about the need for and safety of vaccine. There are also ethical dilemmas associated with vaccinating adolescents for a sexually transmitted disease despite future cancer risk. The purpose of this research was to determine HPV vaccination acceptance/hesitancy among young adults. Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System 2015 data were used. During 2015, 83.1% of adults ages 25-29 years did not receive any HPV vaccination; the UOR was 3.47; 95% CI = 2.11, 5.70) compared to adults 18-24 years. There is a need to accelerate public health messaging/campaigns to increase HPV vaccination rates.

Abstract
Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) was the 7th most common malignancy worldwide in 2018 and despite therapeutic advances, the overall survival rate for oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC; ∼50%) has remained unchanged for decades. The most common types are OSCC and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC, survival rate ∼85%). Tobacco smoking is a major risk factor of HNSCC. In the developed world, the incidence of OSCC is declining as a result of tobacco cessation programs. However, OPSCC, which is also linked to human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, is on the rise and now ranks as the most common HPV-related cancer. The current state of knowledge indicates that HPV-associated disease differs substantially from other types of HNSCC and distinct biological differences between HPV-positive and HPV-negative HNSCC have been identified. Although risk factors have been extensively discussed in the literature, there are multiple clinically relevant questions that remain unanswered and even unexplored. Moreover, existing approaches (e.g., tobacco cessation, vaccination, and chemoprevention) to manage and control this disease remain a challenge. Thus, in this review, we discuss potential future basic research that can assist in a better understanding of disease pathogenesis which may lead to novel and more effective preventive strategies for OSCC and OPSCC.
