Abstract
Ischemic stroke is a leading cause of disability and death in patients. Despite considerable recent advances in the treatment of ischemic stroke, only a limited number of effective neuroprotective agents are available for stroke. Green tea (Camellia sinensis) is a popular herbal plant, and numerous studies have indicated its health benefits for several diseases. Green tea is of interest due to its high content of catechin derivatives, including epicatechin, gallocatechin, epicatechin gallate, epigallocatechin, and epigallocatechin-3-gallate. This review tried to develop a feasible background for the potential effects of green tea and its bioactive derivatives concerning protection against ischemic stroke. Green tea's antioxidants, anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptotic, and neuroprotective effects are believed to be efficacious in stroke treatment. Evidence supports the idea that green tea can be used to assist in treating ischemic stroke.

Abstract
Objectives This present study aims to investigate the effect of tea consumption on cognitive function and examine possible psychosocial mechanisms in older adults. Participants and methods The data of this study came from the 2018 wave of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey(CLHLS), and a total of 11,910 valid samples were included. We used ordinary least squares (OLS) to explore whether frequent tea consumption had significant effect on the cognitive function of older people. The problem of endogeneity was addressed by using a propensity score matching (PSM). Then we further explored the psychosocial mechanisms of the effect using a stepwise regression approach. Results Frequent tea consumption produced a positive effect on Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) score (coefficient = 0.340, p < 0.01), and PSM showed similar results. Specifically, the positive effect of green tea (coefficient 0.409, p < 0.01) was significantly greater than the other teas (coefficient 0.261, p < 0.1). Moreover, frequent tea drinkers were 59.7, 74.8, and 81.8% less likely to have severe, moderate and mild cognitive impairment respectively, compared to infrequent tea drinkers (p < 0.01). Levels of depression and sleep quality had partial mediation effect for frequent tea consumption on cognitive function, accounting for 27.6 and 3.5% of the total effect, respectively. Conclusion Frequent tea consumption was found to have beneficial effects on cognitive function, especially in older people with green tea intake. Sleep quality and levels of depression partially mediated the association between frequent tea consumption and cognitive function among Chinese older adults.

Abstract
The activation of M1-type macrophages are dominant cells secreting proinflammatory present within the inflamed synovium in the progression of osteoarthritis (OA). Increased oxidative stress, such as redundant ROS and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), are important factors in driving macrophages to polarize into M1 type. In this study, metal-polyphenol nanoformulations (Cu-Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (Cu-EGCG) nanosheets) were synthesized through the coordination interaction between EGCG and copper ions, which possessed the antioxidant effect of EGCG and anti-inflammatory of Cu2+. Results showed that Cu-EGCG nanosheets were biocompatible and the Cu2+ could be sustained released from the nanoparticles. Cu-EGCG nanosheets with multienzyme-like antioxidative activity could effectively scavenge the excessive intracellular ROS, leading to significantly decreased expression of the pro-inflammatory cytokines, which could reduce the expression of M1-type macrophages and exhibit excellent promotion on shifting macrophages to M2 phenotypes. Moreover, the secreted factor from the cell supernatant of Cu-EGCG treated macrophages exhibited anti-inflammatory potential in chondrocytes of inflamed synovial joints. This study suggests a novel strategy for OA therapy by using metal-polyphenol nanoformulations targeting macrophages.

Abstract
l-Theanine, the most abundant amino acid component in green tea, has anti-stress effects and refreshes the mental state. A recent study demonstrated that l-arginine, the second most abundant amino acid in green tea, might enhance the anti-stress effects of l-theanine. The aim of this study was to evaluated the effects of combined ingestion of l-theanine and l-arginine on psychological stress in humans. A randomized placebo-controlled trial was conducted including 120 healthy young adults (mean age 22.4 y, 63.3% female). Subjects were randomly assigned to theanine (200 mg l-theanine), combined theanine/arginine (200 mg l-theanine, 50 mg l-arginine), or placebo groups. After consuming a test beverage, we administered a stress-loading test (Uchida-Kraepelin performance test) and performed salivary alpha-amylase activity (sAA) measurements to assess the physiological stress response at 0 min (immediately after), 5 min, and 15 min. The changes in sAA at 15 min after the stress-loading test were -2.75 (11.2) kIU/L in the theanine/arginine group, -0.40 (11.5) kIU/L in the theanine group, and 6.95 (18.6) kIU/L in the placebo group. The values in the theanine/arginine (p=0.007) and theanine (p=0.02) groups differed significantly from those in the placebo group. However, the difference between theanine/arginine and theanine groups, was not statistically significant (p=0.74). From this study, no clear conclusion could be drawn regarding the potentiating effect of theanine and arginine combined ingestion on anti-stress effects in human.

Abstract
Duyun compound green tea (DCGT) is a healthy beverage with lipid-lowering effect commonly consumed by local people, but its mechanism is not very clear. We evaluated the effect of DCGT treatment on bile acids (BA) metabolism of mice with high-fat diet (HFD) – induced hyperlipidaemia by biochemical indexes and metabolomics and preliminarily determined the potential biomarkers and metabolic pathways of hyperlipidaemia mice treated with DCGT as well as investigated its lipid-lowering mechanism. The results showed that DCGT treatment could reduce HFD – induced gain in weight and improve dyslipidaemia. In addition, a total of ten types of BA were detected, of which seven changed BA metabolites were observed in HFD group mice. After DCGT treatment, glycocholic acid, tauroursodeoxycholic acid and taurochenodeoxycholic acid were significantly down-regulated, while hyodeoxycholic acid, deoxycholic acid and chenodeoxycholic acid were markedly up-regulated. These results demonstrated that DCGT treatment was able to make the BA metabolites in the liver of hyperlipidaemia mice normal and alleviate hyperlipidaemia by regulating the metabolites such as glycocholic acid, tauroursodeoxycholic acid and taurochenodeoxycholic, as well as the BA metabolic pathway and cholesterol metabolic pathway involved.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Melanin from different sources is widely used by many manufacturers to produce cosmetics and sunscreens. Research data shows a wide spectrum of biological activities of melanin including the protection against UV radiation and oxidants. According to the research evidence, the topical use of melanin is more effective against inflammation than the hydrocortisone. The most common side effects of topical melanin ointment are local itching, burning and moderate hyperemia. AIM OF THE STUDY The purpose of this work is to describe the adverse outcomes of melanin containing formulas in patients with solar dermatitis, and to compare the frequency of adverse reactions with data from different research reports. METHODS A Pharmacovigilance questionnaire was developed to assess potential adverse events attributable to the use of melanin ointment. We used a modified survey tool created by Jaber and coauthors. This survey of melanin application documents validated reports of adverse events manifested by objective skin changes. MEDLINE (Ovid); MEDLINE In-Process Citations & Daily Update (Ovid); PubMed (NLM) (Internet); Embase (Ovid); Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews were searched for the evidence on adverse reactions of topical melanin application. RESULTS The responses documented in this survey show reliability and safety of melanin formula used for the photoprotection and treatment of solar dermatitis. Most symptoms encountered in those using melanin were consistent with exposure to excessive amount (more than 4 times per day) of the compound applied topically. Of the total 534 survey responses received, 74% reported no adverse events. A total of 140 completed adverse event reports. Melanin ointment was being administered for the indications of photo injury (burns) in 75%, photo-dermatitis in 18%, and solar eczematous dermatitis in 7% of patients. Data were compared with rates from other reports. CONCLUSION We have no evidence that the chemical structure of melanin varies with currently available products, used locally or in other countries, nor that any such variability played any role in the events reported here. Further studies are required to compare the adverse events of topical melanin formulas containing melanins of different origin.

Abstract
An efficient gas chromatography-mass spectrometry approach was used in this study to quantify 13 pesticide residues in rooibos teas purchased from registered retail outlets in South Africa between November 2019 and April 2020. A QuEChERS (Quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe) procedure was used to extract pesticides using 7.5 mg of graphitized carbon black (GCB), 50 mg of primary secondary amine (PSA), and 150 mg of anhydrous MgSO4. In order to compensate for the matrix effect, matrix matched calibration curves ranging from 10 µg/kg-500 µg/kg were applied for accurate quantification. For validation purposes, accuracy tests were conducted using a blank tea sample spiked with pesticide standards at two different concentrations (10 and 100 μg/kg). Most of the analytes were recovered within acceptable recovery ranges (72-106%), with a relative standard deviation of less than 20%. The limits of quantification were low, all falling below 10 μg/kg which meets the maximum residue limits (MRLs). The validated method was used to analyze 100 tea samples, and among the pesticides analyzed, deltamethrin and lambda-cyhalothrin were detected in only one samples at a concentration (92.11 and 66.41 μg/kg, respectively) below the MRLs stipulated by the European Union. The level of pesticides that are commonly used in tea should be checked often.

Abstract
Hypoxia-induced neuroinflammation in stroke, neonatal hypoxic encephalopathy, and other diseases subsequently contributes to neurological damage and neuronal diseases. Microglia are the primary neuroimmune cells that play a crucial role in cerebral inflammation. Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) has a protective antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects against neuroinflammation. However, the effects of EGCG on hypoxia-induced inflammation in microglia and the underlying mechanism remain unclear. In this study, we investigated whether EGCG might have a protective effect against hypoxia injury in microglia by treatment with CoCl2 to establish a hypoxic model of BV2 microglia cells following EGCG pre-treatment. An exposure of cells to CoCl2 caused an increase in inflammatory mediator interleukin (IL)-6, inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), and cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 expression, which were significantly ameliorated by EGCG via inhibition of NF-κB pathway. In addition, EGCG attenuated the expression of hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF)-1α and the generation of ROS in hypoxic BV2 cells. Furthermore, the suppression of hypoxia-induced IL-6 production by EGCG was mediated via the inhibition of HIF-1α expression and the suppression of ROS generation in BV2 cells. Notably, EGCG increased the Nrf-2 levels and HO-1 levels in the presence of CoCl2. Additionally, EGCG suppressed hypoxia-induced apoptosis of BV2 microglia with cleavage of poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) and caspase-3. In summary, EGCG protects microglia from hypoxia-induced inflammation and oxidative stress via abrogating the NF-κB pathway as well as activating the Nrf-2/HO-1 pathway.

Abstract
Although the evidence is inconclusive, epidemiological studies strongly suggest that increased exposure to electromagnetic radiation (EMR) increases the risk of brain tumors, parotid gland tumors, and seminoma. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified mobile phone radiofrequency radiation as possibly carcinogenic to humans (Group 2B). Humans being are inadvertently being exposed to EMR as its prevalence increases, mainly through mobile phones. Radiation exposure is unavoidable in the current context, with mobile phones being an inevitable necessity. Prudent usage of medicinal plants with a long history of mention in traditional and folklore medicine and, more importantly, are safe, inexpensive, and easily acceptable for long-term human use would be an appealing and viable option for mitigating the deleterious effects of EMR. Plants with free radical scavenging, anti-oxidant and immunomodulatory properties are beneficial in maintaining salubrious health. Green tea polyphenols, Ginkgo biloba, lotus seedpod procyanidins, garlic extract, Loranthus longiflorus, Curcuma amada, and Rosmarinus officinalis have all been shown to confer neuroprotective effects in validated experimental models of study. The purpose of this review is to compile for the first time the protective effects of these plants against mobile phone-induced neuronal damage, as well as to highlight the various mechanisms of action that are elicited to invoke the beneficial effects.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the antioxidant capacity of different tea plant: mint, linden, chamomile, St. John’s wort, green and black tea in relation to total phenolic content. The antioxidant capacity of the tea infusions at different brewing times was determined using DPPH assay while the total phenolic content (TPC) was assessed using the modified Folin-Ciocalteu method. The results showed that there were significant statistical differences in antioxidant capacity depending on infusion time, according to one-way ANOVA analysis. Leaves used as components of tea infusions were analyzed by FAAS for their content of iron and copper in the dry product and in the infusion. The correlation between TPC and DPPH capacity of tea plant infusions was evaluated by Pearson correlation matrix. Total phenolics compounds content was positively and significantly correlated with DPPH capacity for all infusions time. Significant correlation was observed between TPC and the copper concentration (p < 0.05). Consequently, the correlations between the physicochemical parameters, TPC, DPPH capacity, Fe and Cu content suggested that the TPC may be a good indicator of the DPPH capacity in the tea infusions and also, suggested the influence of antioxidant compounds on mineral bioavailability.

Abstract
Treating postoperative (PO) pain is a clinical challenge. Inadequate PO pain management can lead to worse outcomes, for example chronic post-surgical pain. Therefore, acquiring new information on the PO pain mechanism would increase the therapeutic options available. In this paper, we evaluated the role of a natural substance, epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), on pain and neuroinflammation induced by a surgical procedure in an animal model of PO pain. We performed an incision of the hind paw and EGCG was administered for five days. Mechanical allodynia, thermal hyperalgesia, and motor dysfunction were assessed 24 h, and three and five days after surgery. At the same time points, animals were sacrificed, and sera and lumbar spinal cord tissues were harvested for molecular analysis. EGCG administration significantly alleviated hyperalgesia and allodynia, and reduced motor disfunction. From the molecular point of view, EGCG reduced the activation of the WNT pathway, reducing WNT3a, cysteine-rich domain frizzled (FZ)1 and FZ8 expressions, and both cytosolic and nuclear β-catenin expression, and the noncanonical β-catenin–independent signaling pathways, reducing the activation of the NMDA receptor subtype NR2B (pNR2B), pPKC and cAMP response element-binding protein (pCREB) expressions at all time points. Additionally, EGCG reduced spinal astrocytes and microglia activation, cytokines overexpression and nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NFkB) pathway, downregulating inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) activation, cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2) expression, and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) levels. Thus, EGCG administration managing the WNT/β-catenin signaling pathways modulates PO pain related neurochemical and inflammatory alterations.

Abstract
Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), the primary polyphenol component of green tea, has been shown to inhibit both oxidation and inflammation. However, the exact mechanism through which EGCG exhibits anti-inflammatory effects remains unclear. In this study, we assessed the potential pathways by which EGCG regulates NLRP3 inflammasome activity in vitro. We found that EGCG inhibits caspase-1 activation and IL-1β secretion by suppressing NLRP3 inflammasome activation in mouse bone marrow-derived macrophages (BMDMs). EGCG was also observed to block NLRP3-mediated ASC speckle formation and to alleviate pyroptosis in BMDMs. In addition, EGCG treatment could improve high-fat diet (HFD)-induced glucose tolerance and prevent NLRP3 inflammasome-dependent inflammation in a mouse model of HFD-induced type 2 diabetes (T2D). Taken together, our results show that EGCG is a general inhibitor of NLRP3 inflammasome activation and administration of EGCG in T2D mice could improve glucose tolerance in vivo.

Abstract
Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), the most common cause of childhood blindness, is a hypoxia-induced eye disease characterized by retinal neovascularization. In the normal retina, a well-organized vascular network provides oxygen and nutrients as energy sources to maintain a normal visual function; however, it is disrupted when pathological angiogenesis is induced in ROP patients. Under hypoxia, inadequate oxygen and energy supply lead to oxidative stress and stimulate neovasculature formation as well as affecting the function of photoreceptors. In order to meet the metabolic needs in the developing retina, protection against abnormal vascular formation is one way to manage ROP. Although current treatments provide beneficial effects in reducing the severity of ROP, these invasive therapies may also induce life-long consequences such as systemic structural and functional complications as well as neurodevelopment disruption in the developing infants. Nutritional supplements for the newborns are a novel concept for restoring energy supply by protecting the retinal vasculature and may lead to better ROP management. Nutraceuticals are provided in a non-invasive manner without the developmental side effects associated with current treatments. These nutraceuticals have been investigated through various in vitro and in vivo methods and are indicated to protect retinal vasculature. Here, we reviewed and discussed how the use of these nutraceuticals may be beneficial in ROP prevention and management.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Green tea has been used as a traditional medicine to control brain function and digestion. Recent works suggest that drinking green tea could prevent cognitive function impairment. During tea manufacturing processes, such as brewing and sterilization, green tea catechins are epimerized. However, the effects of heat-epimerized catechins on cognitive function are still unknown. To take this advantage, we developed a new green tea extract, high temperature processed-green tea extract (HTP-GTE), which has a similar catechin composition to green tea beverages. AIM OF THE STUDY This study aimed to investigate the effect of HTP-GTE on scopolamine-induced cognitive dysfunction and neuronal differentiation, and to elucidate its underlying mechanisms of action. MATERIALS AND METHODS The neuronal differentiation promoting effects of HTP-GTE in SH-SY5Y cells was assessed by evaluating neurite length and the expression level of synaptophysin. The DNA methylation status at the synaptophysin promoter was determined in differentiated SH-SY5Y cells and in the hippocampi of mice. HTP-GTE was administered for 10 days at doses of 30, 100 and 300 mg/kg (p.o.) to mice, and its effects on cognitive functions were measured by Y-maze and passive avoidance tests under scopolamine-induced cholinergic blockade state. RESULTS HTP-GTE induced neuronal differentiation and neurite outgrowth via the upregulation of synaptophysin gene expression. These beneficial effects of HTP-GTE resulted from reducing DNA methylation levels at the synaptophysin promoter via the suppression of DNMT1 activity. The administration of HTP-GTE ameliorated cognitive impairments in a scopolamine-treated mouse model. CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that HTP-GTE could alleviate cognitive impairment by regulating synaptophysin expression and DNA methylation levels. Taken together, HTP-GTE would be a promising treatment for the cognitive impairment observed in dysfunction of the cholinergic neurotransmitter system.

Abstract
The COVID‐19 disease caused by the SARS‐CoV‐2 has emerged as a worldwide pandemic and caused huge damage to the lives and economy of more than hundred countries. As on May 10, 2020, more than 4,153,300 people stand infected from the virus due to an unprecedented rate of transmission and 282,700 have lost their lives because of the disease. In this context, medicinal plants may provide a way to treat the disease by targeting specific essential proteins of the virus. We screened about 51 medicinal plants and found that Tea (Camellia sinensis) and Haritaki (Terminalia chebula) has potential against SARS‐COV‐2 3CLpro, with an IC50 for Green Tea as 8.9 ± 0.5 μg/ml and Haritaki 8.8 ± 0.5 μg/ml. The in‐silico studies suggested that Tea component Thearubigins binds to the cysteine 145 of protease active site and could be a pharmacoactive molecule. We predict that the inhibition in protease activity may be able to halt the SARS‐CoV‐2 replication cycle and therefore, we propose Green Tea, Black Tea, and Haritaki plant extracts as potential therapeutic candidates for SARS‐CoV‐2 infection. Further investigation on role of bioactive constituents of extracts is needed to establish the molecular basis of inhibition and towards expedited drug discovery.

Abstract
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) mainly caused by Uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC), are common bacterial infections. Many individuals suffer from chronically recurring UTIs, sometimes requiring long-term prophylactic antibiotic regimens. The global emergence of multi-drug resistant uropathogens in the last decade underlines the need for alternative non-antibiotic therapeutic and preventative strategies against UTIs. The research on non-antibiotic therapeutic options in UTIs has focused on the following phases of the pathogenesis: colonization, adherence of pathogens to uroepithelial cell receptors and invasion. In this review, we discuss vaccines, small compounds, nutraceuticals, immunomodulating agents, probiotics and bacteriophages, highlighting the challenges each of these approaches face. Most of these treatments show interesting but only preliminary results. Lactobacillus-containing products and cranberry products in conjunction with propolis have shown the most robust results to date and appear to be the most promising new alternative to currently used antibiotics. Larger efficacy clinical trials as well as studies on the interplay between non-antibiotic therapies, uropathogens and the host immune system are warranted.

Abstract
Diabetic neuropathic pain is characterized by spontaneous pain with hyperalgesia and allodynia. We investigated whether (-)-epigallocatechin-3-O-gallate could improve diabetic neuropathic pain development through hypoglycemic, hypolipidemic, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory effects. Diabetes was induced in rats by streptozotocin (55 mg/kg/once) and treated with (-)-epigallocatechin-3-O-gallate (25 mg/kg/orally/once/daily/5 weeks). Diabetic rats showed an increase in serum levels of glucose, nitric oxide, triglyceride, total cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol with a decrease in high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol and body weight. Also, there was an elevation in brain malondialdehyde with a marked reduction in brain levels of glutathione, superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, and glutathione-S-transferase. Furthermore, diabetic rats showed a clear reduction in plasma levels of insulin and an increase in plasma cytokines (interleukin-6 and tumor necrosis factor-α). Moreover, diabetic rats exhibited hyperalgesia as indicated by a hot plate, tail immersion, formalin, and carrageenan-induced edema tests as well as brain histopathological changes (neuron degeneration, gliosis, astrocytosis, congestion and hemorrhage). (-)-Epigallocatechin-3-O-gallate treatment ameliorated alterations in body weight, biochemical parameters, pain sensation, and histopathological changes in brain tissue. (-)-Epigallocatechin-3-O-gallate offers promising hypoglycemic, hypolipidemic, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, which can prevent the development and progression of diabetic neuropathic pain.

Abstract
Neurodegenerative diseases, namely Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Huntington's disease, and multiple sclerosis are becoming one of the main health concerns due to the increasing aging of the world's population. These diseases often share the same biological mechanisms, including neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, and/or protein fibrillation. Recently, there have been many studies published pointing out the possibilities to reduce and postpone the clinical manifestation of these deadly diseases through lifelong consumption of some crucial dietary substances, among which phytochemicals (e.g., polyphenols) and endogenous substances (e.g., acetyl-L-carnitine, coenzyme Q10, n-3 poysaturated fatty acids) showed the most promising results. Another important issue that has been pointed out recently is the availability of these substances to the central nervous system, where they have to be present in high enough concentrations in order to exhibit their neuroprotective properties. As so, such the aim of this review is to summarize the recent findings regarding neuroprotective substances, their mechanisms of action, as well as to point out therapeutic considerations, including their bioavailability and safety for humans.

Abstract
Background Diet and exercise play important roles in ameliorating metabolic syndrome. Yunkang 10 (Camellia sinensis var. assamica) is a most cultivated tea variety for making tea in the Southwestern China. Currently, there is no report of healthy effects of Yunkang 10 green tea (YKGT) and treadmill exercise (Ex) on high fat diet induced metabolic syndrome (MetS). We aimed to investigate the beneficial effects and molecular mechanism of YKGT and Ex using high fat diet induced MetS of C57BL/6 mice. Methods Catechins and caffeine in water extract of YKGT were measured via high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). 10-week old mice were fed with high fat diet (HFD) for 10 weeks to induce obese mice. Then the obese mice were fed with continuous high fat diet (HFD), HFD with YKGT, HFD with Ex, and HFD with both YKGT and Ex for 8 weeks, respectively. The another group of 10-week old mice fed with low fat diet (LFD) were used as control. Results HPLC data revealed that YKGT has abundantly high concentration of epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) and caffeine compared to Longjing 43 (Camellia sinensis var. sinensis) green tea. YKGT and Ex significantly decreased the level of blood glucose, serum total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), insulin, and alanine aminotransferase activity (ALT) when compared to HFD group. The fatty liver and hepatic pro-inflammatory gene expression in the YKGT, Ex and YKGT+Ex groups was mitigated significantly compared with HFD group, respectively. The phosphorylation of inhibitor of nuclear factor kappa-B kinase α/β (IKKα/β) and inhibitor of nuclear factor kappa-B α (IkBα) protein in the nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-kB) signaling pathway was also decreased in YKGT or YKGT+Ex groups. The combination of YKGT and Ex prevented gene expression for lipid synthesis in the liver tissue, and significantly upregulated mRNA level of glucose transport genes in the skeletal muscles, when compared to the HFD group. Conclusions This study demonstrated that YKGT supplement or exercise appeared to reverse preexisting metabolic syndrome, and effectively relieved the fatty liver and hepatic inflammatory response induced by high fat diet. YKGT supplement and treadmill exercise together had better beneficial effects than only one intervention.

Abstract
Periodontal diseases are highly prevalent and can affect high percentage of the worlds' population. Oxidative stress and inflammation play an important role in the pathogenesis of periodontal diseases. Nowadays, more attention has been focused on the herbal remedies in the field of drug discovery. Green tea is an important source of polyphenol antioxidants. It has long been used as a beverage worldwide. The most interesting polyphenol components of green tea leaves that are related with health benefits are the catechins. Taken together, this review suggested that green tea, with its wide spectrum of activities, could be a healthy alternative for controlling the damaging reactions seen in periodontal diseases.

Abstract
Tea is one of the most popular beverages in the world and possesses a wide range of beneficial effects for human health. The modulation of tea on gut microbiota has gained much interest in recent years. The present study discussed the modulation effect of various types of tea on gut microbiota, which plays crucial roles in human health, as investigated by in vitro animal and human studies. The currently available findings from a total of 23 studies support the modulation effects of tea liquid, tea extract, and its major active components, including polyphenols, polysaccharides, and teasaponin, on gut microbiota. Overall, tea possesses prebiotic-like effect and can alleviate the gut microbiota dysbiosis induced by high-fat diet in gut microbiota, despite the detailed bacterial taxa may alter depending on the types of tea supplemented. Current evidence implies that the modulation effect on gut microbiota may be an important action mechanism underlying the beneficial effect of tea consumption in daily life and also the great potential of strategically chosen tea extract to develop functional foods.

Abstract
Cosmetic ingredients derived from Camellia sinensis (tea) plant parts function as antioxidants and skin conditioning agents-humectant and miscellaneous. The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel (Panel) reviewed relevant animal and human data related to these ingredients. The use of the leaf ingredients in beverages results in much larger systemic exposures than those possible from cosmetic use. Accordingly, concern over the systemic toxicity potential of leaf-derived ingredients is mitigated. Because product formulations may contain multiple botanical ingredients, each containing the same constituents of concern, formulators are advised to be aware of these constituents and to avoid reaching levels that may lead to sensitization or other toxic effects. The Panel concluded that the C sinensis leaf-derived ingredients are safe in the present practices of use and concentration described in this safety assessment when formulated to be nonsensitizing. However, the available data are insufficient to determine whether the non-leaf-derived ingredients are safe for use in cosmetics.

Abstract
Kombucha tea is a refreshing beverage that is produced from the fermentation of tea leaves. In this study, kombucha tea was prepared using 1% green tea, oolong tea, and black tea, and 10% sucrose with acetic acid bacteria and yeast. The pH values of the kombucha tea were found to be in a range of 2.70-2.94 at 15 days of fermentation. The lowest pH value of 2.70 was recorded in the kombucha prepared from black tea. The total acidity of kombucha prepared from black tea was the highest by 16.75 g/L and it was still maintained after heat treatment by boiling and after autoclaved. Six organic acids: glucuronic, gluconic, D-saccharic acid 1,4-lactone, ascorbic, acetic, and succinic acid in kombucha tea were detected by HPLC with the optimization for organic acids detection using isocratic elution buffer with C18 conventional column. The highest level of organic acid was gluconic acid. Kombucha prepared from green tea revealed the highest phenolic content and antioxidation against DPPH radicals by 1.248 and 2.642 mg gallic acid/mL kombucha, respectively. Moreover, pathogenic enteric bacteria: Escherichia coli. E. coli O157:H7. Shigella dysenteriae, Salmonella Typhi, and Vibrio cholera were inhibited by kombucha and heat-denatured kombucha with diameter of the inhibition zones ranged from 15.0 ± 0.0-25.0 ± 0.0 mm. In addition, kombucha prepared from green tea and black tea demonstrated toxicity on Caco-2 colorectal cancer cells. Therefore, kombucha tea could be considered as a potential source of the antioxidation, inhibition of pathogenic enteric bacteria, and toxicity on colorectal cancer cells.

Abstract
Meta-analysis reports suggested that green tea (GT) consumption is associated with mild to moderate effects on major global killers. To enhance the health promoting potential of GT, one of the strategies is to combine it with traditionally used medicinal plants (Ocimum gratissimum, Cymbopogon citratus, Cymbopogon flexuosus, and Hibiscus rosa-sinensis). The aim of this investigation was to evaluate and compare the possible synergistic antioxidant interaction of binary combinations of GT with medicinal plants. Overall, GT and O. gratissimum combination showed the highest antioxidant potential and strongest synergistic interaction at EC50 . A strong correlation was found between antioxidant capacity (DPPH, ABTS, NO, and hemolysis) and total phenolic content (TPC) (except lipid peroxidation) for individual infusions, but very weak correlation was observed for GT combinations. Whereas, for both individual and binary aqueous infusions, moderate to strong correlation was observed between antioxidant parameters and FTIR-selected peak (3250-3290 cm-1 ) omitting lipid peroxidation for single infusions. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: The combination of GT with certain medicinal plants used as herbal teas can demonstrate synergistic interactions that may boost the health promoting potential of GT. This study provides basis for future designing and formulation of beverages containing GT combinations based on their antioxidant interactions that can potentially enhance the efficacy of GT as a chemopreventive agent. It may also promote the consumption of GT combinations that may help in realizing untapped potential of underutilized plants.

Abstract
To investigate the effects of grafting on non-volatile metabolites in tea, non-targeted metabolomic analyses of fresh leaves were performed on the basis of ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography quadrupole time-of-flight tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-QTOF/MS). One non-grafted YingHong No. 9 and four grafted tea [grafting scion YingHong No. 9 on four different rootstocks, BaiMao No. 2 (BM2), BaiYeDanCong (BY), HeiYeShuiXian (HY), and WuLingHong (WLH)] were chosen as materials. In total, 32 differential metabolites were identified, including phenolic acids, flavan-3-ols, dimeric catechins, flavonol and flavonol/flavone glycosides, etc. Partial least squares discrimination analysis and hierarchical cluster analysis showed various effects of different rootstocks on metabolites. Thereinto, rootstocks of WLH and BY showed extremely outstanding performance in up- and downregulating these metabolites, respectively. Differential metabolites were enriched into three crucial pathways, including biosynthesis of phenylpropanoids, flavonoid biosynthesis, and flavone and flavonol biosynthesis, which might influence the quality of tea. This study provides a theoretical basis for grafting-related variations of non-volatile metabolites in fresh tea leaves.

Abstract
The main purpose of this study was to investigate the hepatotoxic potential and effects on the gut microbiome of decaffeinated green tea extract (dGTE) in lean B6C3F1 mice. Gavaging dGTE over a range of 1X–10X mouse equivalent doses (MED) for up to two weeks did not elicit significant histomorphological, physiological, biochemical or molecular alterations in mouse livers. At the same time, administration of dGTE at MED comparable to those consumed by humans resulted in significant modulation of gut microflora, with increases in Akkermansia sp. being most pronounced. Results of this study demonstrate that administration of relevant-to-human-consumption MED of dGTE to non-fasting mice does not lead to hepatotoxicity. Furthermore, dGTE administered to lean mice, caused changes in gut microflora comparable to those observed in obese mice. This study provides further insight into the previously reported weight management properties of dGTE; however, future studies are needed to fully evaluate and understand this effect.

Abstract
Collagen, the most abundant extracellular matrix protein in animal kingdom belongs to a family of fibrous proteins, which transfer load in tissues and which provide a highly biocompatible environment for cells. This high biocompatibility makes collagen a perfect biomaterial for implantable medical products and scaffolds for in vitro testing systems. To manufacture collagen based solutions, porous sponges, membranes and threads for surgical and dental purposes or cell culture matrices, collagen rich tissues as skin and tendon of mammals are intensively processed by physical and chemical means. Other tissues such as pericardium and intestine are more gently decellularized while maintaining their complex collagenous architectures. Tissue processing technologies are organized as a series of steps, which are combined in different ways to manufacture structurally versatile materials with varying properties in strength, stability against temperature and enzymatic degradation and cellular response. Complex structures are achieved by combined technologies. Different drying techniques are performed with sterilisation steps and the preparation of porous structures simultaneously. Chemical crosslinking is combined with casting steps as spinning, moulding or additive manufacturing techniques. Important progress is expected by using collagen based bio-inks, which can be formed into 3D structures and combined with live cells. This review will give an overview of the technological principles of processing collagen rich tissues down to collagen hydrolysates and the methods to rebuild differently shaped products. The effects of the processing steps on the final materials properties are discussed especially with regard to the thermal and the physical properties and the susceptibility to enzymatic degradation. These properties are key features for biological and clinical application, handling and metabolization.

Abstract
Tea (Camellia sinensis) leaves are used to make the most widely consumed beverage globally after water. Therefore, the safety and quality of raw tea leaves are important indices for making tea and related products. Habitat management has been widely used as an environmentally friendly method to control pests in agroecosystems. To investigate the impact of habitat management on tea plantation ecosystems, a habitat management approach with intercropping was established. The function of habitat management on pest control was evaluated. Furthermore, metabolome and transcriptome analysis were applied to assay changes in quality-related metabolites. The habitat management approach was found to maintain arthropod biodiversity and develop natural arthropod enemies in the tea plantation. Therefore, the yield of the habitat management-treated tea plantation was increased. Metabolome analysis showed that epigallocatechin-3-gallate, the major catechin in tea leaves, has a significantly increased content in leaves of tea plants under habitat management compared with those in the control tea plantation. The content of L-theanine, the major amino acid in tea leaves, was not significantly changed in tea plants under habitat management. Furthermore, aroma compounds were more abundant in tea leaves from the habitat management-treated tea plantation than those from the chemical pesticide-treated tea plantation. Therefore, habitat management is reported for the first time as a safe and effective approach to improving the yield and quality of tea leaves.

Abstract
This paper reports on the development of an integrated leaf quality inspecting system using near infrared reflectance (NIR) spectroscopy for quick and in situ estimation of total polyphenol (TP) content of fresh tea leaves, which is the most important quality indicator of tea. The integrated system consists of a heating system to dry the fresh tea leaves to the level of 3-4% moisture, a grinding and sieving system fitted with a 250 micron mesh sieve to make fine powder from the dried leaf. Samples thus prepared are transferred to the NIR beam and TP is measured instantaneously. The wavelength region, the number of partial least squares (PLS) component and the choice of preprocessing methods are optimized simultaneously by leave-one-sample out cross-validation during the model calibration. In order to measure polyphenol percentage in situ, the regression model is developed using PLS regression algorithm on NIR spectra of fifty-five samples. The efficacy of the model developed is evaluated by the root mean square error of cross-validation, root mean square error of prediction and correlation coefficient (R2) which are obtained as 0.1722, 0.5162 and 0.95, respectively.

Abstract
Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is a diverse group of medical and health care systems, practices, and products that are not generally considered part of conventional medicine. Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is the most common leukemia diagnosed in the western hemisphere, and 16.5% to 66% of patients have reported using CAM. Most patients use spiritual/mind-body techniques and high doses of vitamins and herbs (most commonly polyphenols, including teas). We have reviewed the reported data on green tea and turmeric use in CLL patients.

The use of traditional means of oral hygiene maintenance has a long-recorded history, with widespread usage in rural areas of Africa, South America and the Indian subcontinent till date. Though dental healthcare professionals and the general population, especially in the urban areas can have the temptation of out-rightly rejecting them as ineffective, the usage of these natural products is based on time-tested scientific principles.
The present article provides an overview of the major traditional practices of oral hygiene maintenance and how they compare against the modern-day armamentarium of oral hygiene maintenance.

Abstract
Endophytes are rich in plant tissues and play important roles in plant-microbial interactions and plant-growth regulation. Here, endophytic bacteria from two closely related tea cultivars of Zijuan and Yunkang-10 were isolated, and the diversities were compared. Plant-growth promoting (PGP) activities were determined on the dominant groups or nitrogen-fixing genera from the two cultivars. Endophytic bacteria were isolated by using of different selective media and methods, and the PGP activities were investigated by analytical and molecular technologies. A total of 110 isolates of 18 genera belonging to three phylums (Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, and Bacteroidetes) were obtained from Zijuan, while 164 isolates of 22 genera belonging to two phylums (Proteobacteria and Firmicutes) were obtained from Yunkang-10. PGP screening indicated that Herbaspirillum spp., Methylobacterium spp., and Brevundimonas spp. showed different PGP abilities. The PGP ability decreased in order of Herbaspirillum spp., Brevundimonas spp. and Methylobacterium spp., and the majority of Methylobacterium spp. did not showed PGP activity of nitrogen-fixation, P-solubilization, siderophore, indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) production or 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate (ACC) deaminase. The study of bacterial community and PGP activities confirmed that endophytes in tea plants are constantly changing in different seasons and tea cultivars, and the PGP bacteria in Zijuan are much abundant than those of Yunkang-10.

Abstract
Green tea and green tea polyphenols (GTPs) are reported to inhibit carcinogenesis and malignant behavior in several diseases. Various in vivo and in vitro studies have shown that GTPs suppress the incidence and development of bladder cancer. However, at present, opinions concerning the anticancer effects and preventive role of green tea are conflicting. In addition, the detailed molecular mechanisms underlying the anticancer effects of green tea in bladder cancer remain unclear, as these effects are regulated by several cancer-related factors. A detailed understanding of the pathological roles and regulatory mechanisms at the molecular level is necessary for advancing treatment strategies based on green tea consumption for patients with bladder cancer. In this review, we discuss the anticancer effects of GTPs on the basis of data presented in in vitro studies in bladder cancer cell lines and in vivo studies using animal models, as well as new treatment strategies for patients with bladder cancer, based on green tea consumption. Finally, on the basis of the accumulated data and the main findings, we discuss the potential usefulness of green tea as an antibladder cancer agent and the future direction of green tea-based treatment strategies for these patients.

Introduction: Using the general Hildebrand-Scatchard-Fedors theory of solubility, the mole fraction (x2) of solubility of phytochemicals contained in the dry green tea leaves was calculated which determines the profile of pharmacological activity.
Objective: The applicative purpose of the study was to estimate the actual solubility of phytochemicals – S|real.| [mol/dm3] in water and in water-ethanol solutions of diversified polarity (εM) for their selective extraction and optimal formulation of oral solid dosage form.
Methods: The basic physico-chemical and structural quantities of phytochemicals and corresponding mathematical equations of general Hildebrand-Scatchard-Fedors theory of solubility were used to calculate the actual solubility – S|real.| and the level of hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB).
Results: The calculated actual solubility values – S|real.| [mol/dm3] collated with correlation equations enabled the assessment of phytochemical capability for the process of mass exchange on phase boundary. Correlation equations for the dependence log P = f (– log S|real.|) point to the structural preferences of phytochemicals in the kinetics of the mass exchange (diffusion) through the natural phase boundary.
Conclusions: Calculations and correlations between the values characterizing the actual solubility – S|real.|, media polarity (water, ethanol and their solutions) and the partition coefficient (log P) including the level of hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB) show that basing on thermodynamic components of the general Hildebrand-Scatchard-Fedors theory of solubility, the diffusion profile of phytochemicals contained in the green tea extract (Ext. Camellia sinensis L. aqu. siccum) through the biological phase boundary as well as optimal choice of the extraction medium for selective extraction of the class of phytochemicals can be estimated.

Abstract
This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to critically evaluate the relation between green tea (GT) consumption and the risk of breast cancer. Popular electronic databases were systematically searched for papers in English language. All case-control and cohort studies in addition to randomized clinical trials were included if they assessed the chemopreventive effects of GT on breast cancer. The quality of included studies was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa and Jadad scale. This systematic review comprised 14 studies: 9 case-control studies, 4 cohort studies, and 1 clinical trial. Odds ratio (OR) in case-control studies suggested that women in the group receiving the highest level of GT had 19% reduction in breast cancer risk compared with those who received the lowest level of GT (summary OR = 0.81, p = .031; 95% CI [0.66, 0.981]; heterogeneity, I2 = 71.53, p < .001, random effect model; 9 studies). OR in cohort studies also showed no significant difference (OR = 0.99, p = .94; 95% CI [0.81, 1.138]; heterogeneity, I2 = 19.06, p = .29; fixed-effect model; 4 studies). According to the only clinical trial, treatment with GT could not alter the mammographic density compared with placebo (26% vs. 25%). It cannot be concluded that GT consumption may decrease the risk of breast cancer. Due to high heterogeneity, a pooled analysis of case-control and cohort studies was not performed.

Abstract
Many scientific articles proved that green tea (GT), Camellia sinensis, has a great potential to manage central nervous system, cardiovascular, and metabolic diseases and treat cancer and inflammatory disorders. However, it is important to consider that "natural" is not always "safe." Some relevant articles reported side effects of GT, detrimental effects on health. The aim of this study is to provide a classified report about the toxicity of GT and its main constituents in acute, subacute, subchronic, and chronic states. Furthermore, it discusses on the cytotoxicity, genotoxicity, mutagenicity, carcinogenicity, and developmental toxicity of GT and its main constituents. The most important side effects have been reported hepatotoxicity and gastrointestinal disorders specially while consumed on an empty stomach. GT and its main components are not major teratogen, mutagen, or carcinogen substances. However, there is limited data in using them during pregnancy, and they should be used with caution in pregnancy, breast-feeding, and susceptible people. Because GT and its main components have a wide variety of drug interactions, consideration should be taken in coadministration of them with narrow therapeutic indexed drugs. Furthermore, they evoke selective cytotoxicity on cancerous cells that could engage them as an adjuvant substance in cancer therapy.

Abstract
This study aims (i) to verify expression of the UCPs, PLIN1, PPARG2, and ADRB3 genes in the abdominal subcutaneous adipose tissue of obese women at baseline and after 8 weeks of supplementation with decaffeinated green tea extract, and (ii) to associate findings with clinical parameters. This is a longitudinal study during which 11 women with obesity grade III were submitted to supplementation with 450 mg of (-)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) (intervention group); the control group consisted of 10 eutrophic women. Anthropometric parameters [weight, height, and body mass index (BMI)], resting metabolic rate (RMR, measured by indirect calorimetry), and gene expression (measured by real-time PCR, RT-qPCR) were determined before and after supplementation. After 8 weeks, clinical parameters and UCP1, PLIN1, PPARG2, and ADRB3 expression remained unaltered in the intervention group (p > .05). Genetic analysis also showed that the UCP3 gene was upregulated (p = .026), but its upregulation did not promote weight loss.

Abstract
Mycotoxins are the most common contaminants of food and feed worldwide and are considered an important risk factor for human and animal health. Oxidative stress occurs in cells when the concentration of reactive oxygen species exceeds the cell’s antioxidant capacity. Oxidative stress causes DNA damage, enhances lipid peroxidation, protein damage and cell death. This review addresses the toxicity of the major mycotoxins, especially aflatoxin B1, deoxynivalenol, nivalenol, T-2 toxin, fumonisin B1, ochratoxin, patulin and zearalenone, in relation to oxidative stress. It summarises the data associated with oxidative stress as a plausible mechanism for mycotoxin-induced toxicity. Given the contamination caused by mycotoxins worldwide, the protective effects of a variety of natural compounds due to their antioxidant capacities have been evaluated. We review data on the ability of vitamins, flavonoids, crocin, curcumin, green tea, lycopene, phytic acid, L-carnitine, melatonin, minerals and mixtures of anti-oxidants to mitigate the toxic effect of mycotoxins associated with oxidative stress.

Abstract
Tea (Camellia sinensis L.) is a perennial acidophilic crop, and known to be a nonalcoholic stimulating beverage that is most widely consumed after water. The aim of this review paper is to provide a detailed documentation of selected micronutrient contents, viz. boron (B), cobalt (Co), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), molybdenum (Mo), and zinc (Zn) in made tea and tea infusion. Available data from the literature were used to calculate human health aspect associated with the consumption of tea infusion. A wide range of micronutrients reported in both made tea and tea infusion could be the major sources of micronutrients for human. The content of B, Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, and Zn in made tea are ranged from 3.04 to 58.44 μg g-1, below detectable limit (BDL) to 122.4 μg g-1, BDL to 602 μg g-1, 0.275 to 13,040 μg g-1, 0.004 to 15,866 μg g-1, 0.04 to 570.80 μg g-1 and 0.01 to 1120 μg g-1, respectively. Only 3.2 μg L-1 to 7.25 mg L-1, 0.01 μg L-1 to 7 mg L-1, 3.80 μg L-1 to 6.13 mg L-1, 135.59 μg L-1 -11.05 mg L-1, 0.05 μg L-1 to 1980.34 mg L-1, 0.012 to 3.78 μg L-1, and 1.12 μg L-1 to 2.32 μg L-1 of B, Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, and Zn, respectively, are found in tea infusion which are lower than the prescribed limit of micronutrients in drinking water by World Health Organization. Furthermore, micronutrient contents in tea infusion depend on infusion procedure as well as on the instrument used for analysis. The proportion of micronutrients found in different tea types are 1.0-88.9% for B, 10-60% for Co, 2.0-97.8% for Cu, 67.8-89.9% for Fe, 71.0-87.4% for Mn, 13.3-34% for Mo, and 34.9-83% for Zn. From the results, it can also be concluded that consumption of three cups of tea infusion per day does not have any adverse effect on human health with respect to the referred micronutrients rather got beneficial effects to human.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE The compound epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), the major polyphenolic compound present in green tea [Camellia sinensis (Theaceae], has shown numerous cardiovascular health promoting activity through modulating various pathways. However, molecular understanding of the cardiovascular protective role of EGCG has not been reported. AIM OF THE REVIEW This review aims to compile the preclinical and clinical studies that had been done on EGCG to investigate its protective effect on cardiovascular and metabolic diseases in order to provide a systematic guidance for future research. MATERIALS AND METHODS Research papers related to EGCG were obtained from the major scientific databases, for example, Science direct, PubMed, NCBI, Springer and Google scholar, from 1995 to 2017. RESULTS EGCG was found to exhibit a wide range of therapeutic properties including anti-atherosclerosis, anti-cardiac hypertrophy, anti-myocardial infarction, anti-diabetes, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. These therapeutic effects are mainly associated with the inhibition of LDL cholesterol (anti-atherosclerosis), inhibition of NF-κB (anti-cardiac hypertrophy), inhibition of MPO activity (anti-myocardial infarction), reduction in plasma glucose and glycated haemoglobin level (anti-diabetes), reduction of inflammatory markers (anti-inflammatory) and the inhibition of ROS generation (antioxidant). CONCLUSION EGCG shows different biological activities and in this review, a compilation of how this bioactive molecule plays its role in treating cardiovascular and metabolic diseases was discussed.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study investigated whether (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) can enhance cognition by a neurorestorative effect in a rat model of bilateral common carotid artery occlusion (BCCAO). METHODS Forty-eight male, 8-week-old Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly allocated to four groups 6 weeks after BCCAO or sham operation: EGCG-single intravenous injection (25 mg/kg/day; SIV group), EGCG-multiple intraperitoneal injection (50 mg/kg/day for 5 days; MIP group), untreated BCCAO group (untreated group), and sham-operated group (sham group). RESULTS Escape latency was significantly shorter in the SIV and MIP groups than in the untreated group. SIV and MIP groups were significantly different from the untreated group in the activity of superoxide dismutase and the content of malondialdehyde (p < 0.05). Protein expression level of brain-derived neurotrophic factor was not significantly different between groups (p > 0.05), while protein expression of vascular endothelial growth factor was significantly lower in the SIV group than in the untreated group (p < 0.05). Protein expression of N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor subunits NR1 and NR2B was significantly higher in the MIP group than in the untreated group (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS EGCG administration at 6 weeks after BCCAO is neurorestorative via an anti-oxidant effect and synaptogenesis, except for angiogenesis.

Abstract
The delayed healing of episiotomy wound and its associated pain is a major problem in obstetrics. Because green tea has analgesic and wound-healing properties, the present study was conducted to determine the effect of green tea ointment on episiotomy pain and wound-healing. The green tea extract was also standardized by measuring its Phenolic and flavonoid compounds, antioxidant activity, and one of its active components, that is, Epigallocatechin gallate. The present clinical trial was conducted on 99 primiparous women visiting Afzalipour Hospital in Kerman in 2015. The subjects were randomly divided into 3 groups, including a green tea ointment group, a placebo ointment group, and a routine care group. The 2 ointment groups smeared 2 cm of the green tea or placebo ointments onto their sutured area twice daily for a total of 10 days. The severity of pain was assessed in the subjects using the visual pain scale and wound-healing using the Redness, Edema, Ecchymosis, Discharge, Approximation (REEDA) scale before the intervention and on the 5th and 10th days after delivery. To standardize the extract, Epigallocatechin gallate was measured by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Phenolic and flavonoid compounds, as well as antioxidant activity of the extract were also determined by spectrometry methods. Before the intervention, no significant differences were observed between the 3 groups in terms of their personal and obstetric details (p > .05), the severity of pain (p = .118), and the REEDA score (p = .212). On the 5th and 10th days after delivery, the severity of pain was significantly lower in the green tea group than in the other 2 groups (p < .0001). The mean REEDA score on the 5th and 10th days showed a better and faster healing in the green tea group compared to the other 2 groups (p < .0001). Total content of phenolic and flavonoids contents of green tea were 74.2 mg/g Gallic acid equivalent and 16.3 mg/g Rutin equivalent, respectively, and its antioxidant capacity was 46% of b-carotene. Green tea ointment appears to be effective in relieving episiotomy pain and improving wound-healing in this study. Further studies are recommended to be conducted on the effectiveness and safety of the different doses of green tea ointment.
