Abstract
BACKGROUND Annually, approximately 1.7 million women are diagnosed with breast cancer worldwide. Engaging in regular physical activity (PA) post-diagnosis brings significant health benefits, enhancing breast cancer survivors' (BCS) prognosis and overall health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Despite these benefits, a low percentage of Chinese BCS adhere to the recommended moderate-to-vigorous PA levels. This highlights the need for innovative PA interventions tailored for BCS management. eHealth technology, such as fitness wearables and apps, presents an opportunity to improve BCS healthcare by offering personalized exercise programs. METHODS This study focuses on developing a precision eHealth PA program for 200 Chinese BCS in Guangdong Province, using a custom micro-application and a smart band for a 12-month trial. All participants will receive a Huawei Smart Band and be divided into 1) a personalized intervention group, receiving daily PA tracking and feedback, and 2) a control group receiving standard care. The primary outcome is PA and secondary outcomes include biomarkers, weight and body composition, functional fitness, HRQoL, and individual beliefs. Outcomes will be assessed at baseline, 6 months, and 12 months (endpoint). Successful outcomes could revolutionize PA programs for Chinese BCS, providing a model for future eHealth interventions.

Abstract
The technological capabilities of mobile phones have made them a useful tool for delivering interventions, but additional research is needed to determine the mechanisms underlying the comparative effectiveness of mobile health interventions. This meta-analysis analyzes the relative effectiveness of mobile phone-based health interventions relative to comparison/control groups (e.g., eHealth interventions, standard of care, etc.), the utility of the theory of planned behavior in mobile phone-based health interventions, and the roles of various moderators. One hundred eighteen studies met inclusion criteria and contributed to an overall effect size of d = 0.27 (95% CI [.22, .32]). Findings indicate that mobile phone-based health interventions are significantly more effective than comparison/control conditions at improving health behaviors. Additionally, perceived behavioral control was a significant moderator providing some support for the usefulness of theory of planned behavior in mobile phone-based health interventions.

Abstract
Background Weight management mobile applications have become increasingly popular as a tool for individuals to achieve their weight loss goals. However, key challenges with mobile weight management applications are sustaining user engagement and promoting long-term behavior change. This study examines the key functions and features of weight management mobile applications from the viewpoint of information technology (IT) experts. We have developed a framework that outlines the optimal design strategies for mobile apps to support sustainable weight management. Methods We conducted face-to-face interviews with five experts to evaluate and give input on the proposed framework. Results Eight specialized functionalities have been categorized and defined based on initial framework system features and recommended features based on experts' feedback: (I) customization; (II) usability; (III) integration; (IV) online support; (V) tracking; (VI) nutrition database; (VII) gamification; and (VIII) notification. In addition, common functionalities were identified as (I) registration/sign in; (II) data privacy; (III) security; and (IV) user feedback. An online discussion indicates the system functionality in four themes: (I) configuration; (II) data analytics; (III) support/performance; and (IV) platform: iOS, Android, Native. Conclusions These functionalities and features will be incorporated into a framework to design mobile applications for sustainable weight management. Also, to be part of user interface development for the user experience experiments.

Abstract
BACKGROUND With the development of emerging technologies, digital behavior change interventions (DBCIs) help to maintain regular physical activity in daily life. OBJECTIVE To comprehensively understand the design implementations of habit formation techniques in current DBCIs, a systematic review was conducted to investigate the implementations of behavior change techniques, types of habit formation techniques, and design strategies in current DBCIs. METHODS The process of this review followed the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Item for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines. A total of 4 databases were systematically searched from 2012 to 2022, which included Web of Science, Scopus, ACM Digital Library, and PubMed. The inclusion criteria encompassed studies that used digital tools for physical activity, examined behavior change intervention techniques, and were written in English. RESULTS A total of 41 identified research articles were included in this review. The results show that the most applied behavior change techniques were the self-monitoring of behavior, goal setting, and prompts and cues. Moreover, habit formation techniques were identified and developed based on intentions, cues, and positive reinforcement. Commonly used methods included automatic monitoring, descriptive feedback, general guidelines, self-set goals, time-based cues, and virtual rewards. CONCLUSIONS A total of 32 commonly design strategies of habit formation techniques were summarized and mapped to the proposed conceptual framework, which was categorized into target-mediated (generalization and personalization) and technology-mediated interactions (explicitness and implicitness). Most of the existing studies use the explicit interaction, aligning with the personalized habit formation techniques in the design strategies of DBCIs. However, implicit interaction design strategies are lacking in the reviewed studies. The proposed conceptual framework and potential solutions can serve as guidelines for designing strategies aimed at habit formation within DBCIs.

Abstract
Exercise and weight management is crucial in preventing postpartum depression and long-term obesity that carries the risk of chronic illness among postpartum women. Although communication devices, such as a smart wrist-worn wearable (SWW), can help users be more physically active, the extent to which postpartum women might benefit from this technology is unknown. We examined how SWWs promoted exercise and helped postpartum women return to pre-pregnancy weight. We tested a model based on the premise that a motivational device that prompts users to engage with it can establish healthy daily routines. An online survey of 309 postpartum women who were living in the United States and were current users of SWWs revealed that the device encouraged them to spend time completing workout goals. Technological affordances (i.e. customization, navigability, and interactivity) and subsequent user engagement with the device positively predicted total workout hours among postpartum women. We present practical implications for postpartum care programs and smart wearable developers.

Abstract
The rapid development of biosensing technologies together with the advent of deep learning has marked an era in healthcare and biomedical research where widespread devices like smartphones, smartwatches, and health-specific technologies have the potential to facilitate remote and accessible diagnosis, monitoring, and adaptive therapy in a naturalistic environment. This systematic review focuses on the impact of combining multiple biosensing techniques with deep learning algorithms and the application of these models to healthcare. We explore the key areas that researchers and engineers must consider when developing a deep learning model for biosensing: the data modality, the model architecture, and the real-world use case for the model. We also discuss key ongoing challenges and potential future directions for research in this field. We aim to provide useful insights for researchers who seek to use intelligent biosensing to advance precision healthcare.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cognitive frailty, defined as having both physical frailty and cognitive impairment that does not satisfy the criteria for Major Neurocognitive Disorder, represents an elevated risk for morbidity. Hence, it is crucial to mitigate such risks. Physical activity interventions have been found effective in protecting against physical frailty and cognitive deterioration. This pilot RCT examines if smartwatches and mobile phone applications can help to increase physical activity, thereby improving physical and cognitive outcomes. METHODS Older individuals (n = 60) aged 60 to 85 years old will have their physical activity tracked using a smartwatch. The subjects will be randomized into two arms: one group will receive daily notification prompts if they did not reach the recommended levels of PA; the control group will not receive prompts. Outcome variables of physical activity level, neurocognitive scores, and physical frailty scores will be measured at baseline, T1 (3 months), and T2 (6 months). Sleep quality, levels of motivation, anxiety, and depression will be controlled for in our analyses. We hypothesize that the intervention group will have higher levels of physical activity resulting in improved cognitive and physical outcomes at follow-up. This study was approved by the National University of Singapore's Institutional Review Board on 17 August 2020 (NUS-IRB Ref. No.: H-20-038). DISCUSSION Wearable sensors technology could prove useful by facilitating self-management in physical activity interventions. The findings of this study can justify the use of technology in physical activity as a preventive measure against cognitive frailty in older adults. This intervention also complements the rapidly rising use of technology, such as smartphones and wearable health devices, in our lives today. REGISTRATION DETAILS This study has been retrospectively registered on clinicaltrials.gov on 5th January 2021 (NCT Identifier: NCT04692974), after the first participant was recruited.

Abstract
Background Children and adolescents who are overweight and obese represent a growing public health issue. The use of step-monitoring devices as an intervention tool may be a simple, cost-effective, and easily replicable solution for addressing obesity in children and adolescents. No prior systematic reviews have evaluated the effectiveness of utilizing step-monitoring devices as an intervention method for obesity in children and adolescents. Methods Previous studies on using step-monitoring devices to prevent and treat obesity in children and adolescents were identified in the following databases: Web of Science, EMBASE, PubMed, Cochrane Library, SPORTDiscus, and SCOPUS. The search period for each database ranged from the year of their inception to 8 March 2023 (updated in June 2024). Meta-analyses were performed for mean differences (MDs) in body mass index (BMI), BMI z-score (BMI-Z), body fat, waist circumference, and body weight. Results From 12,907 relevant records, 23 studies were included in this meta-analysis. The included studies were mainly at low risk of bias, except for blinding. Step-monitoring device-based interventions had significant effects in reducing BMI-Z (MD -0.06; 95% CI -0.10 to -0.02), body fat (MD -0.95%; 95% CI -1.35 to -0.54), and body weight (MD -1.23 kg; 95% CI -2.36 to -0.10). However, there was no significant effect on BMI (MD -0.16 kg/m2; 95% CI -0.55 to 0.22) and waist circumference (MD -0.33 cm; 95% CI -1.23 to 0.58). Subgroup analyses indicated that participants who were overweight or obese showed greater intervention effects on BMI and BMI-Z compared to participants with normal weight. The programs with an intervention duration of ≤6 months presented a greater intervention effect on BMI-Z than those with an intervention duration of more than 6 months. The programs that established goals had a greater intervention effect on body fat than those that did not. Conclusions Step-monitoring devices may be an effective and generalizable intervention tool for the prevention and treatment of obesity in children and adolescents. Future studies should further explore how to set step goals and the duration of interventions to achieve better intervention effects.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Digital health interventions (DHIs) are effective in improving poor nutrition, physical inactivity, overweight and obesity. There is evidence suggesting that the impact of DHIs may be enhanced by improving user engagement. However, little is known about the overall effectiveness of strategies on engagement with DHIs. OBJECTIVE This study aims to assess the overall effectiveness of strategies to improve engagement with DHIs targeting nutrition, physical activity, and overweight or obesity and explore associations between strategies and engagement outcomes. The secondary aim was to explore the impact of these strategies on health risk outcomes. METHODS The MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, CINAHL, CENTRAL, Scopus, and Academic Source Complete databases were searched up to July 24, 2023. Eligible studies were randomized controlled trials that evaluated strategies to improve engagement with DHIs and reported on outcomes related to DHI engagement (use or user experience). Strategies were classified according to behavior change techniques (BCTs) and design features (eg, supplementary emails). Multiple-variable meta-analyses of the primary outcomes (usage and user experience) were undertaken to assess the overall effectiveness of strategies. Meta-regressions were conducted to assess associations between strategies and use and user experience outcomes. Synthesis of secondary outcomes followed the "Synthesis Without Meta-Analysis" guidelines. The methodological quality and evidence was assessed using the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool, and the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation tool respectively. RESULTS Overall, 54 studies (across 62 publications) were included. Pooled analysis found very low-certainty evidence of a small-to-moderate positive effect of the use of strategies to improve DHI use (standardized mean difference=0.33, 95% CI 0.20-0.46; P<.001) and very low-certainty evidence of a small-to-moderate positive effect on user experience (standardized mean difference=0.29, 95% CI 0.07-0.52; P=.01). A significant positive association was found between the BCTs social support (effect size [ES]=0.40, 95% CI 0.14-0.66; P<.001) and shaping knowledge (ES=0.39, 95% CI 0.03-0.74; P=.03) and DHI use. A significant positive association was found among the BCTs social support (ES=0.70, 95% CI 0.18-1.22; P=.01), repetition and substitution (ES=0.29, 95% CI 0.05-0.53; P=.03), and natural consequences (ES=0.29, 95% CI 0.05-0.53; P=.02); the design features email (ES=0.29, 95% CI 0.05-0.53; P=.02) and SMS text messages (ES=0.34, 95% CI 0.11-0.57; P=.01); and DHI user experience. For secondary outcomes, 47% (7/15) of nutrition-related, 73% (24/33) of physical activity-related, and 41% (14/34) of overweight- and obesity-related outcomes reported an improvement in health outcomes. CONCLUSIONS Although findings suggest that the use of strategies may improve engagement with DHIs targeting such health outcomes, the true effect is unknown because of the low quality of evidence. Future research exploring whether specific forms of social support, repetition and substitution, natural consequences, emails, and SMS text messages have a greater impact on DHI engagement is warranted. Abstract
Haptic nudging via wearable devices promotes physical activity and may increase upper limb movement in stroke rehabilitation. This study investigated the optimal approach to haptic nudging by examining diurnal variation, duration of effect, and repeated nudging. The study analysed data from a multiple-period randomised crossover study. A 12 h inpatient rehabilitation day was divided into 72 intervals in which participants with stroke (n = 20) randomly received either a 'nudge' or 'no nudge'. Upper limb movement was observed, classified, and analysed using longitudinal mixed models. The odds of affected upper limb movement following a nudge compared with no nudge were significantly higher during active periods such as breakfast, lunch, and morning and afternoon activities (odds ratios (ORs) 2.01-4.63, 95% CIs [1.27-2.67, 3.17-8.01]), but not dinner (OR 1.36, 95% CI [0.86, 2.16]). The effect of nudging was no longer statistically significant at 50-60 s post-nudge. Consecutive delays in nudging significantly decreased the odds of moving when a nudge was eventually delivered. Contrary to expectations, people with stroke appear more responsive to haptic nudging during active periods rather than periods of inactivity. By understanding the optimal timing and frequency of haptic nudging, the design of wearable devices can be optimised to maximise their therapeutic benefits.

Abstract
Overweight and obesity are consistently associated with lower physical activity (PA) levels and greater sedentary behavior (SB) in population studies. To date, no review has evaluated the factors associated with these behaviors in the specific population who have developed obesity/overweight. The aim of this systematic review was to identify the correlates/determinants of SB and PA in adults with overweight and obesity. Five databases were searched for studies, which reported factors or outcomes relating to PA or SB in adults living with overweight/obesity, published from 1980 to 2021. The factors were categorized using a socioecological model, strength, and direction of association. Of 34,058 articles retrieved, 45 studies were included, and 155 factors were identified. Self-efficacy, intrinsic motivation, exercise enjoyment, self-perceived good health, and social support were consistently associated with higher levels of PA. Consistent negative correlations were married females, increased BMI, obesity severity, pain, number of comorbidities, lack of time, energy, and willpower, and hilly terrain. Few studies (n = 12) examined SB, and no evidence for consistent associations were found. This review identified several correlates specific to PA in this population. Further studies are required to identify directionality and distal correlates for PA and all correlate levels of SB.

Abstract
The present study was aimed to verify whether an integrating of wearable activity tracker device and a social media intervention strategy would be better than a standalone social media intervention for improving physical activity (PA) and reducing sedentary time for Chinese postgraduate population. A total of 42 full-time postgraduate students participated in this study, which were randomized to receive a 4-week social media intervention through WeChat either with (Wearable Device group) or without (control group) a wearable activity tracker device. Energy expenditure, step counts, moderate to vigorous physical activity time (MVPA) and sedentary time were assessed before and after the intervention. Besides, anthropometric parameters of body weight, body mass index, body fat rate, waist-to-hip ratio, as well as self-reported quality of life were also evaluated. It was found that both energy expenditure and step counts were significantly increased, while sedentary time was significantly reduced during the post-intervention test compared to the baseline test for Wearable Device group. No significant difference of PA was found for the control group. The results demonstrated that the integrating of wearable activity tracker device and a social media intervention was effective in promoting PA, while a standalone social media intervention may have no effect on the influence of PA for Chinese postgraduates.

Abstract
RATIONALE & OBJECTIVE People with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) have very low physical activity, and the degree of inactivity is strongly associated with morbidity and mortality. We assessed the feasibility and effectiveness of a 12-week intervention coupling a wearable activity tracker (FitBit) and structured feedback coaching versus wearable activity tracker alone on changes in physical activity in hemodialysis patients. STUDY DESIGN Randomized controlled trial. SETTING & PARTICIPANTS 55 participants with ESKD receiving hemodialysis who were able to walk with or without assistive devices recruited from a single academic hemodialysis unit between January 2019 and April 2020. INTERVENTIONS All participants wore a Fitbit Charge 2 tracker for a minimum of 12 weeks. Participants were randomly assigned 1:1 to a wearable activity tracker plus a structured feedback intervention versus the wearable activity tracker alone. The structured feedback group was counseled weekly on steps achieved after randomization. OUTCOME The outcome was step count, and the main parameter of interest was the absolute change in daily step count, averaged per week, from baseline to completion of 12 weeks intervention. In the intention-to-treat analysis, mixed-effect linear regression analysis was used to evaluate change in daily step count from baseline to 12-weeks in both arms. RESULTS Out of 55 participants, 46 participants completed the 12-week intervention (23 per arm). The mean age was 62 (± 14 SD) years; 44% were Black, and 36% were Hispanic. At baseline, step count (structured feedback intervention: 3,704 [1,594] vs wearable activity tracker alone: 3,808 [1,890]) and other participant characteristics were balanced between the arms. We observed a larger change in daily step count in the structured feedback arm at 12 weeks relative to use of the wearable activity tracker alone arm (Δ 920 [±580 SD] versus Δ 281 [±186 SD] steps; between-group difference Δ 639 [±538 SD] steps; P<0.05). LIMITATIONS Single-center study and small sample size. CONCLUSION This pilot randomized controlled trial demonstrated that structured feedback coupled with a wearable activity tracker led to a greater daily step count that was sustained over 12 weeks relative to a wearable activity tracker alone. Future studies are required to determine longer-term sustainability of the intervention and potential health benefits in hemodialysis patients. Abstract
Background Physical activity (PA) has been consistently reported as a crucial component of disease prevention and improvement of people's health. Nevertheless, data has evidenced a decline in physical activity levels among adults in Jordan. Although previous behavioral change interventions have documented efficacy in increasing physical activity among adults, the PA levels is low among adults. A new motivational intervention that focuses on changing behavior toward performing the recommended level of physical activity is on need. Objective This two-arm single-center randomized controlled trial aimed to measure the efficacy of a multi-component behavioral intervention (including goal setting, self-monitoring, and feed-back) for increasing physical activity levels and self-efficacy for exercise and decreasing body mass index and blood pressure among students at a Jordanian University. Setting Philadelphia University in Jordan. Methods A behavioral intervention based on individualized consultations, text messages reminders and interaction with a Facebook page was compared with educational sessions in terms of efficacy for increasing physical activity levels among students at Philadelphia University. Results The intervention and control groups were comparable at baseline. At 6 months a significant increase was seen in the moderate physical activity and walking levels of the intervention group compared with the control group. The mean change (SD) in total METs of moderate physical activity and walking was 503 (325.20) METs/week in the intervention group and 6 (271.20) METs/week in the control group. The mean change (SD) in steps/day was 3,000 (1,217) steps/day in the intervention group and 876 (1120.23) steps/day in the control group. The difference between mean change of the two groups was very significant at 2,124 (-820 to -563). Self-efficacy for exercise scale significantly increased among the intervention group compared with the control group. In addition, body mass index (BMI) declined from the baseline (Mean: 28.23, SD: 4.82) to 6 months (Mean: 25.36, SD: 5.23) for the intervention group. Conclusion Behavioral intervention through multicomponent strategies, alongside the implementation of an advanced communication strategy via phone and social media, is effective for motivating adult students to increase their physical activity levels. Abstract
Personal exercise programmes have long been used and prescribed for weight loss and the improvement of quality of life in obese patients. While individualised programmes are usually the preferred option, they can be more costly and challenging to deliver in person. A move to digital programmes with a wider reach has commenced, and demand has increased due to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. In this review, we evaluate the current status of digital exercise programme delivery and its evolution over the past decade, with a focus on personalisation. We used specific keywords to search for articles that met our predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria in order to provide valuable evidence and insights for future research. We identified 55 studies in total in four key areas of focus, from the more recent development of apps and personal digital assistants to web-based programmes and text or phone call interventions. In summary, we observed that apps may be useful for a low-intensity approach and can improve adherence to programmes through self-monitoring, but they are not always developed in an evidence-based manner. Engagement and adherence are important determinants of weight loss and subsequent weight maintenance. Generally, professional support is required to achieve weight loss goals.

Abstract
Despite overwhelming adoption of wearable fitness trackers (WFT), it is unclear if they affect physical activity (PA) engagement or PA motivation. We hypothesized that combining a WFT with an effective intervention, motivational interviewing (MI), would positively influence both motivation and PA. A 12-week randomized controlled trial was conducted in 40 adults who did not meet PA recommendations. The four conditions were: a PA education (Educational control, n = 10), a WFT (WFT, n = 10), bi-weekly MI sessions (MI, n = 10), or both interventions (WFT+, n = 10). Motivation and PA were measured through an online survey and actigraphy pre- and post-intervention. Both the WFT+ and MI groups improved autonomous forms and decreased controlled forms of motivation. They also had higher basic psychological needs scores when compared to the Education group post-intervention. We detected no changes in PA. High autonomous motivation at baseline predicted higher post-intervention PA in the WFT+ group but predicted lower post-intervention PA in the WFT group. Results suggests that MI alone or with a WFT can improve basic psychological needs and autonomous forms of motivation for PA, but not PA participation. Individual differences in motivation at baseline may moderate the effect of a WFT on PA. This study was registered at clinicaltrials.gov (NCT490014).

Abstract
The use of wearable devices has increased substantially in recent years. This, together with the rise of telemedicine, has led to the use of these types of devices in the healthcare field. In this work, we carried out a detailed study on the use of these devices (regarding the general trends); we analyzed the research works and devices marketed in the last 10 years. This analysis extracted relevant information on the general trend of use, as well as more specific aspects, such as the use of sensors, communication technologies, and diseases. A comparison was made between the commercial and research aspects linked to wearables in the healthcare field, and upcoming trends were analyzed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Bariatric surgery offers an opportunity for physical activity (PA) promotion due to patients' increased ability to engage in PA. Technology-based PA interventions are promising tools for promoting PA to support patients in this key period. The Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology 2 (UTAUT2) model is a recognized theoretical model for examining technology acceptability. Although a previous study reported that 92% of women with obesity have high acceptability of at least one technology-based PA intervention, little is known about the factors that lead to different levels of acceptability between technologies and therefore the reasons for choosing a preferred intervention. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to (1) characterize the acceptability of 3 technology-based PA interventions (ie, telehealth, active video game, mobile app) in the context of bariatric surgery, and (2) explore patients' preference motives. This study, using a qualitative design, examined the suitability of the UTAUT2 model in this specific context. METHODS Participants (n=26) read written French descriptions of the technology-based PA interventions with illustrations and chose their preferred intervention. Semidirective interviews were conducted to explore the reasons for their choice of the preferred intervention, notably using the UTAUT2 framework. Data were analyzed based on inductive and deductive approaches. RESULTS All participants who preferred a technology-based PA intervention (ie, active video game, n=10; mobile app, n=10; telehealth, n=6) expressed a behavioral intention to use it. In addition, some of them expressed a high behavioral intention to use another technology (ie, active video game, n=4; mobile app, n=1; telehealth, n=7). All the constructs of the UTAUT2 emerged during the qualitative interviews and were specified through subcategories. Additional constructs also emerged, especially other motivational factors. CONCLUSIONS This study showed that, in the context of technology-based PA interventions for postbariatric patients, the UTAUT2 is suitable, although additional motivational factors (which were not considered by the UTAUT2 model) should be considered.

Abstract
Background Telemonitoring of blood pressure (BP) may improve BP control. However, many patients are not using BP telemonitoring due to personal, technological, and health system barriers. Individuals are required to have electronic health literacy (e-HL), defined as knowledge and skills to use technology services effectively, such as BP telemonitoring. Objective The objective was to determine the facilitators and barriers experienced by patients with hypertension in telemonitoring of BP using the e-HL framework (e-HLF). Methods This study was a prospective mixed-methods study using a convergent design. We recruited a convenience sample of 21 patients with hypertension. The qualitative section was online or phone individual in-depth interviews based on the e-HLF, which has seven domains. The quantitative section was an online survey consisting of demographics, an e-HL questionnaire, and patient-provider communication preferences. A joint display was used in the mixed-methods analysis. Results Five themes including knowledge, motivation, skills, systems, and behaviors along with 28 subthemes comprising facilitators or barriers of BP telemonitoring were identified. The mixed-methods results showed concordance between the participants' e-HL status and their experiences in the ability to actively engage with BP monitoring and managing digital services (domain 3) of the e-HLF. Other e-HL domains showed discordance. Conclusion Patients may engage with BP telemonitoring when they feel the usefulness of concurrent access to telemonitoring services that suit their needs.

Abstract
The incorporation of digital functionalities into consumer packaged goods (CPG) has the potential to improve our lives by supporting us in our daily practises. However, despite the increasing availability of data about their use, research is needed to explore how these data can be harnessed to create such digital enhancements. This paper explores how consumers can utilise data about interactions with CPGs to conceptualise their enhanced versions. We devised a data-inspired ideation approach, using data visualisations and design cards to facilitate the conceptualisation of enhanced CPGs. Analysing the role of data as expressed through participants’ comments and designs, we found that data served as a basis for the creation of unique concepts imbued with greater consideration for the experiences of others and attention to their own interests. Our study shows the value of empowering consumers through data to broaden and inform their contributions towards the creation of smart products.

Abstract
Background Anemia testing using digital hemoglobinometers (DH) enabled with real-time data visibility improves delivery outcomes, reduces the manual process of keeping records, and strengthens follow-up. In this study, testing of anemia was done by HealthTrender, an innovative mobile-based cloud-connected application, with HemoCue 301 device (HemoCue AB, Ängelholm, Sweden). Aim The objective of the study was to assess the feasibility, acceptability and coverage of anemia testing by the HealthTrender mobile application by the end users - Auxiliary Nursing Midwives (ANMs). Material and methods An exploratory mixed-method study was conducted for three months, i.e., from 1st January 2020 to 31st March 2020. The study was done at the antenatal clinics (ANCs) of two Primary Health Centres (PHCs) and their subcentres in the Ballabgarh block of Haryana, India. Qualitative data on the feasibility of the HealthTrender application was collected from 13 ANMs involved in the testing of anemia using in-depth interviews. Quantitative data of 1057 pregnant women attending the ANC clinics was also analysed. For data capturing, a Bluetooth dongle connected with HemoCue 301 transferred the hemoglobin (Hb) values to the HealthTrender mobile application and was uploaded to the cloud, displaying it on a webpage in real time. Result Among 1057 pregnant women enrolled, the mean (SD) hemoglobin was 10.9 gm/dl (1.5) and the prevalence of anemia was 47%. ANMs reported that the mobile application was easy to use, and half of them were very satisfied with its speed, easy uploading and quickness in reflecting Hb values on the mobile screen. Challenges related to internet connectivity, loss of Bluetooth dongle connection and less manpower with extra work required were expressed by the ANMs. Completion of records was significantly higher for the mobile application (100%) as compared to manual register-based records (81%). Conclusion Web-based application HealthTrender used by ANMs for screening pregnant women for anemia was feasible and had high acceptance. Using digital technology increases the reporting and coverage of hemoglobin testing. Information technology use may be highly beneficial for the serial recording of hemoglobin and subsequent management and follow-ups.

Abstract
Objective Many cancer survivors do not meet recommended levels of exercise, despite the
benefits physical activity offers. This study aimed to understand
experiences of insufficiently active overweight/obese breast or colorectal
cancer survivors, in efforts to (1) examine regular physical activity
barriers, and (2) determine perceptions and acceptability of a remotely
delivered physical activity intervention utilizing wearable sensors and
personalized feedback messages. Methods In-person and virtual small group interviews were conducted engaging
overweight/obese cancer survivors (n = 16, 94% female, 94%
breast cancer survivors) in discussions resulting in 314 pages of
transcribed data analyzed by multiple coders. Results All participants expressed needing to increase physical activity, identifying
lack of motivation centering on survivorship experiences and symptom
management as the most salient barrier. They indicated familiarity with
activity trackers (i.e., Fitbit) and expressed interest in biosensors (i.e.,
continuous glucose monitors [CGMs]) as CGMs show biological metrics in
real-time. Participants reported (1) personalized feedback messages can
improve motivation and accountability; (2) CGM acceptability is high given
survivors’ medical history; and (3) glucose data is a relevant health
indicator and they appreciated integrated messages (between Fitbit and CGM)
in demonstrating how behaviors immediately affect one's body. Conclusions This study supports the use of wearable biosensors and m-health interventions
to promote physical activity in cancer survivors. Glucose-based biofeedback
provides relevant and motivating information for cancer survivors regarding
their daily activity levels by demonstrating the immediate effects of
physical activity. Integrating biofeedback into physical activity
interventions could be an effective behavioral change strategy to promote a
healthy lifestyle in cancer survivors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Preliminary studies show that structured physical activity (PA) interventions can reduce negative affect and alcohol use in patients recovering from alcohol use disorder (AUD). The current study tested whether the association between PA, affect, and alcohol cravings can be observed in patients' natural environments (i.e., without a structured intervention) as well. METHOD Twenty-five participants with AUD completed 3 weeks of ecological momentary assessment (EMA) monitoring and wore Fitbit devices to measure physical activity directly after discharge from partial hospitalization treatment for AUD. PA was operationalized as total steps and consecutive 10-min bouts of moderate-intensity exercise (100 steps/minute). RESULTS Only 56% of participants engaged in any bouts of moderate-intensity physical activity throughout the 3-week study period (mode = 1 bout), and participants logged an average of 8183 steps/day (SD = 5560). Daily steps were associated with a higher positive affect and lower alcohol cravings, and with higher positive affect the next day, but the effects were very small. No relationships were observed between PA and affect or alcohol cravings at the hourly level except a random effect signifying that bouts of PA were either positively associated or not associated with negative affect in the next hour for different participants. CONCLUSIONS Overall, results suggest that naturalistic PA may be beneficial for a small subset of patients in recovery from AUD, but the majority did not engage in regular exercise or experience improvements in affect and cravings as a result of PA.

Abstract
Wearables are an important source of big data as they provide real-time high-resolution data logs of health indicators of individuals. Higher-order associations between pairs of variables is common in wearables data. Representing higher-order association curves as piece-wise linear segments in a regression model makes them more interpretable. However, existing methods for identifying the change points for segmented modeling either overfit or have low external validity for wearables data containing repeated measures. Therefore, we propose a human-in-the-loop method for segmented modeling of higher-order pairwise associations between variables in wearables data. Our method uses the smooth function estimated by a generalized additive mixed model to allow the analyst to annotate change point estimates for a segmented mixed-effects model, and thereafter employs the Brent's constrained optimization procedure to fine-tuning the manually provided estimates. We validate our method using three real-world wearables datasets. Our method not only outperforms state-of-the-art modeling methods in terms of prediction performance but also provides more interpretable results. Our study contributes to health data science in terms of developing a new method for interpretable modeling of wearables data. Our analysis uncovers interesting insights on higher order associations for health researchers.

Abstract
ObjectiveTo determine the net effect of different physical activity intervention components on step counts in addition to self-monitoring.DesignA systematic review with meta-analysis and meta-regression.Data sourcesFive databases (PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, ProQuest and Discus) were searched from inception to May 2022. The database search was complemented with backward and forward citation searches and search of the references from relevant systematic reviews.Eligibility criteriaRandomised controlled trials comparing an intervention using self-monitoring (active control arm) with an intervention comprising the same treatment PLUS any additional component (intervention arm).Data extraction and synthesisThe effect measures were mean differences in daily step count. Meta-analyses were performed using random-effects models, and effect moderators were explored using univariate and multivariate meta-regression models.ResultsEighty-five studies with 12 057 participants were identified, with 75 studies included in the meta-analysis at postintervention and 24 at follow-up. At postintervention, the mean difference between the intervention and active control arms was 926 steps/day (95% CI 651 to 1201). At a follow-up, the mean difference was 413 steps/day (95% CI 210 to 615). Interventions with a prescribed goal and involving human counselling, particularly via phone/video calls, were associated with a greater mean difference in the daily step count than interventions with added print materials, websites, smartphone apps or incentives.ConclusionPhysical activity interventions that combine self-monitoring with other components provide an additional modest yet sustained increase in step count compared with self-monitoring alone. Some forms of counselling, particularly remote phone/video counselling, outperformed other intervention components, such as websites and smartphone apps.PROSPERO registered numberCRD42020199482.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Physical activity (PA) is an important strategy to prevent and treat obesity. Electronic health (eHealth) interventions, such as wearable activity monitors and smartphone apps, may promote adherence to regular PA and successful weight loss. This review highlights the evidence for eHealth interventions in promoting PA and reducing weight. RECENT FINDINGS Wearables can increase PA and are associated with moderate weight loss in middle/older-aged individuals, with less convincing effects long-term (> 1 year) and in younger people. Data for interventions such as mobile phone applications, SMS, and exergaming are less robust. Investigations of all eHealth interventions are often limited by complex, multi-modality study designs, involving concomitant dietary modification, making the independent contribution of each eHealth intervention on body weight challenging to assess. eHealth interventions may promote PA, thereby contributing to weight loss/weight maintenance; however, further evaluation is required for this approach to be adopted into routine clinical practice.

Abstract
The sudden outbreak of the novel coronavirus pandemic in 2019 disrupted the normal order of life and work, and the virus is still a major threat prevailing the globe. Confronted with the unknown virus, citizens have been following government policies of COVID-19 treatment and containment, and actively improving their immunity through physical activity (PA). This paper is concerned with ways to guide or promote people's willingness to exercise, one of the most effective means to boost immunity. Based on the "attitude-intention" correlation defined in the theory of planned behaviour (TPB), this study, by synchronizing online data about workouts, explores the influence of people's attitudes towards PA behaviour in promoting their intentions to engage in such behaviours as a means to fight the pandemic. In addition, the attitudes towards the use of sports apps and the epidemic are also reckoned with to investigate influencing factors promoting physical activity during the lockdown. The results of the study have been derived from the data of 1223 valid questionnaires, which are subjected to hierarchical regression analysis. Attitudes towards exercise and the use of sports apps are proven to have a significant impact on PA intentions, and the two variables are in direct proportion, with more positive attitudes leading to higher intentions; in contrast, attitudes towards the epidemic do not exhibit an obvious effect. In this light, it is advisable that when clinicians treat COVID-19 patients and medical departments respond to the epidemic, they actively make affirmative influences on peoples' attitudes towards exercise and formulate appropriate exercise plans based on indicators detected and recorded by sports apps such as vital capacity, heart rate, respiratory index and self-perceived intensity to help them face the risk of the epidemic with more confidence.

Abstract
Several factors that follow the development of society affect physical inactivity, which primarily includes the development of technology and digitalization and the increasing choice of unhealthy lifestyle habits. However, certain shifts in the fitness industry have been noted in the last decade. The development of wearable technologies and artificial intelligence is one of the leading fitness trends and undoubtedly represents the future of the fitness industry. On the other hand, the significant influence of social media and networks affects the development and attitudes of people related to physical activity. Therefore, this review paper evaluates the advantages and disadvantages of wearable technologies and artificial intelligence, the positive and negative effects of social networks, and points out the problems accompanying these new fitness trends. The development of fitness trends follows humanity's needs, and one of the biggest challenges is incorporating these novelties in a mission to improve physical activity levels worldwide.

Abstract
Mobile and wearable electronics is one of the rapidly developing areas of high technologies, which regularly appear new devices that offer new features for monitoring our health, level of physical exertion and everyday activity. From the point of view of medicine and sports, usually wearable devices are used to solve one of two tasks: round-the-clock continuous heart rate monitoring, and the control of the heart rate during workout. One of the drawbacks of such devices is the calculation errors that are caused by the motion artifacts. The most critical of them are those that arise in some cases when performing high-intensity training's, which are conjugate with intense hands movements, such as sprint running or boxing. In addition, limited resources of wearable devices do not always allow usage of very complex algorithms for processing certain events. In our work, an ultra-lightweight framework for a precise real-time heart rate monitoring during the high intensity physical exercises is developed. The model is a combination of a digital signal processing and deep convolutional and recurrent neural networks approaches. From the personalization point of view, the effect of anthropometric parameters has been studied. The model shows an average mean absolute error of 2.4±2.8 bpm during 5 fold cross-validation on an internal dataset, 2.9±3.4 bpm when evaluated on 12 IEEE SPC subjects, and 4.8±5.3 bpm when evaluated on 24 subjects from Wonkwang University dataset. Such results exceed the current state of the art solutions both in terms of the achieved accuracy of heart rate estimation and consumed computational resources. Clinical relevance- This work aims to provide a robust and lightweight neural network based framework for a real time heart rate estimation during high intensity physical exercises.

Abstract
The importance of accurate and continuous heart rate monitoring during workout cannot be overestimated. Supporting heart rate in the desired range, you strengthen the heart muscle and the overall fitness level. Therefore, the precise heart rate measurements are important at each stage: before workout, during exercises and after completion. One of the most important problems for precise heart rate measurement during high intensive exercises with the help of wearable devices is the movement artifacts. Even the smallest movement of the muscles, the turn of the wrist, the movement of the fingers or even the displacement of the fitness tracker per millimeter - all this very much distorts the useful signal. To solve the problem of motion artifacts, both digital signal processing approaches are used, as well as deep learning methods. In this paper, we offer a new method of processing the signal of wearable devices during workout, in particular to solve the motion artifacts problem, using deep neural networks. A distinctive feature of the model is the use of higher signal harmonics to determine the shape and type of signal. In particular, a method is proposed for classifying the signal spectrogram to noise, movement and useful component. During cross-validation on an available datasets, we compared the effectiveness of the proposed approach for spectrogram classification and received an improvement of averaged ROC AUC (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve) and F1 Score by 5% by using higher harmonics. Clinical relevance- This work aims to provide an approach for a wearable devices PPG signal spectrogram classification using neural networks and high-order harmonics processing.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study investigated the effects of a mobile Tai Chi app and Facebook (FB) program on stress and quality of life (QoL) among breast cancer survivors (BCS). METHODS This study was a remote, 12-week 2-arm parallel randomized controlled trial (RCT). BCS were randomly assigned into either the Tai Chi intervention condition (using an app to practice Tai Chi three times a day, at least five days/week and receiving FB health tips) or the comparison condition (receiving FB health tips only). The final sample comprised 35 female BCS (Mage = 56.17). The Perceived Stress Scale was utilized to measure stress and the Patient Reported Outcome Measurement Information System was adopted to assess QoL - mental health (anxiety and depression) and physical health. RESULTS No significant time × group interaction effects emerged for stress and mental health (Wilk's lambda = 0.96, F (2, 32) = 0.74, p = 0.48, η2 = 0.04) and physical health (Wilk's lambda = 1.00, F (1,33) = 0.14, p = 0.71, η2 = 0.00). Yet, a significant time effect was observed for mental health, F (1,33) = 5.51, p = 0.02, η2 = 0.14; and physical health, F (1,33) = 5.59, p < 0.05, η2 = 0.14; but not for stress, F (1,33) = 1.70, p = 0.20, η2 = 0.05. Specifically, participants' physical health (1.57 vs. 1.41) and mental health (1.80 vs. 1.62) significantly improved over time across both groups. Also, a group effect for mental health approached the significant level, F (1,33) = 4.06, p = 0.05, η2 = 0.11. In detail, the Tai Chi participants had significantly better mental health at follow-up test (1.43 vs. 1.90) compared to the comparison participants (p < 0.05, 95%CI: 0.91 to -0.40). CONCLUSION The study findings suggested that the implementation of the Tai Chi app combined FB health tips program had positive effects on BCS's mental health. Also, offering a health education program could be beneficial to BCS's physical health as well.

Abstract
Recent years have seen significant advances in the sensing capabilities of smartphones, enabling them to collect rich contextual information such as location, device usage, and human activity at a given point in time. Combined with widespread user adoption and the ability to gather user data remotely, smartphone-based sensing has become an appealing choice for health research. Numerous studies over the years have demonstrated the promise of using smartphone-based sensing to monitor a range of health conditions, particularly mental health conditions. However, as research is progressing to develop the predictive capabilities of smartphones, it becomes even more crucial to fully understand the capabilities and limitations of using this technology, given its potential impact on human health. To this end, this paper presents a narrative review of smartphone-sensing literature from the past 5 years, to highlight the opportunities and challenges of this approach in healthcare. It provides an overview of the type of health conditions studied, the types of data collected, tools used, and the challenges encountered in using smartphones for healthcare studies, which aims to serve as a guide for researchers wishing to embark on similar research in the future. Our findings highlight the predominance of mental health studies, discuss the opportunities of using standardized sensing approaches and machine-learning advancements, and present the trends of smartphone sensing in healthcare over the years.

Abstract
AbstractActivity self-tracking technologies have become a popular tool for monitoring physical activity, used to assist individuals in increasing physical activity. Previous findings, however, are inconclusive on whether standalone activity self-tracking, alone or in combination with a step goal, is efficient in encouraging physical activity behavior. This study aimed at investigating the effects of mere activity self-tracking and activity self-tracking with a daily 10,000 steps goal on physical activity levels in a randomized-controlled parallel group trial (N = 150; mean age= 24.66, standard deviation = 4.75), using a publicly available fitness tracker and associated smartphone application. Two experimental groups, one of which without and the other with step goal, recorded daily physical activity (daily step count) via a fitness tracker wearable and associated smartphone application and via daily self-reports of activity over the course of 6 weeks. An unequipped control group recorded physical activity only via daily self-reports. Both experimental groups were compared against each other based on step count data, and against the control group based on daily self-reports of activity. Results of mixed-effect multilevel analyses suggest that activity tracking using fitness trackers and externally assigned goals do not drive greater physical activity behavior. Rather, results indicate substantial individual differences that should be targeted in future studies to better understand individual behavioral processes boosting or hindering daily activity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Advances in the device and smartphone technology have resulted in a convenient option for providing physical activity strategies; this is especially important during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this meta-analysis is to evaluate the efficacy of wearable and smartphone-based interventions to promote physical activity and improve quality of life and cardiovascular health outcomes among overweight/obese adults. DATA SOURCES We searched relevant databases up to 18 November 2021 for conducting a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials lasting 4 or more weeks that investigated the impacts of wearables and smartphone applications on physical activity, quality of life and health outcomes. RESULTS Twenty-six studies including 2373 participants were included. There was a significant pooled standard mean differences (SMD) for the comparison between intervention versus control in steps per day (SMD: 0.54; p = 0.0003), moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (SMD: 0.47; p = 0.02), quality of life (SMD: 0.33; p = 0.0006), body weight (mean difference (MD), -1.61 kg; p = 0.009), and BMI (MD, -0.59 kg/m2; p = 0.04). There were no significant differences between the intervention and control groups for systolic and diastolic blood pressure and resting heart rate (all p > 0.05). CONCLUSION Our findings suggest that wearable and smartphone-based interventions are effective strategies in promoting physical activity and can provide a direct contact line to health professionals.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Physical activity (PA) is known to improve quality of life (QoL) as well as reduce mortality and disease progression in individuals with chronic neurological disorders. However, Latina women are less likely to participate in recommended levels of PA due to common socioeconomic barriers, including limited resources and access to exercise programs. Therefore, we developed a community-based intervention with activity monitoring and behavioral coaching to target these barriers and facilitate sustained participation in an exercise program promoting PA. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to determine the feasibility and efficacy of a community-based intervention to promote PA through self-monitoring via a Fitbit and behavioral coaching among Latina participants with chronic neurological disorders. METHODS We conducted a proof-of-concept study among 21 Spanish-speaking Latina participants recruited from the Los Angeles County and University of Southern California (LAC+USC) neurology clinic; participants enrolled in the 16-week intervention at The Wellness Center at The Historic General Hospital in Los Angeles. Demographic data were assessed at baseline. Feasibility was defined by participant attrition and Fitbit adherence. PA promotion was determined by examining change in time spent performing moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA) over the 16-week period. The effect of behavioral coaching was assessed by quantifying the difference in MVPA on days when coaching occurred versus on days without coaching. Change in psychometric measures (baseline vs postintervention) and medical center visits (16 weeks preintervention vs during the intervention) were also examined. RESULTS Participants were of low socioeconomic status and acculturation. A total of 19 out of 21 (90%) participants completed the study (attrition 10%), with high Fitbit wear adherence (mean 90.31%, SD 10.12%). Time performing MVPA gradually increased by a mean of 0.16 (SD 0.23) minutes per day (P<.001), which was equivalent to an increase of approximately 18 minutes in MVPA over the course of the 16-week study period. Behavioral coaching enhanced intervention effectiveness as evidenced by a higher time spent on MVPA on days when coaching occurred via phone (37 min/day, P=.02) and in person (45.5 min/day, P=.01) relative to days without coaching (24 min/day). Participants improved their illness perception (effect size g=0.30) and self-rated QoL (effect size g=0.32). Additionally, a reduction in the number of medical center visits was observed (effect size r=0.44), and this reduction was associated with a positive change in step count during the study period (P.=04). CONCLUSIONS Self-monitoring with behavioral coaching is a feasible community-based intervention for PA promotion among Latina women of low socioeconomic status with chronic neurological conditions. PA is known to be important for brain health in neurological conditions but remains relatively unexplored in minority populations. Abstract
BACKGROUND Wearable activity trackers hold the potential for enhancing health and fitness, but the use of wearable activity trackers has remained largely unexplored in older adults. The purpose of the current study was to examine the effectiveness and acceptability of wearable activity trackers for promoting physical activity (PA) in older adults living in retirement communities. METHODS Forty older adult participants (mean age = 85.4 years) used a wearable activity tracker (Fitbit InspireHR) for 12 weeks. Participants were provided with personalized activity goals and weekly feedback of PA during the 12 weeks. The main outcomes were daily step counts collected at baseline and the end of the intervention, and participants' experiences of using the wearable activity tracker assessed after the 12-week intervention through an 8-item questionnaire and individual interviews. RESULTS Participants used the activity tracker on 97.5% of measured days and had an average increase of 900 steps/day (p < 0.001). The Acceptance questionnaire revealed that the wearable activity tracker was acceptable, useful, and easy to use. Participants found that wearable activity trackers helped improve self-awareness and motivation of PA but reported a few concerns regarding the comfort of wearing the activity trackers and the ease of reading visual feedback. CONCLUSIONS Wearable activity trackers lead to a small but significant increase of PA and are perceived as acceptable and useful in older adults. Given the rapidly growing older population, wearable activity trackers are promising tools that could be used in large-scale interventions to improve PA and health in older adults. Abstract
Background Physical activity during midlife (ages 45-64) plays a major role in the prevention of chronic and serious medical conditions. Unfortunately, many midlife adults struggle to be physically active in the setting of low levels of psychological well-being and the management of multiple confluent sources of stress. Effective, scalable, midlife-specific interventions are needed to promote physical activity and prevent the development of chronic medical conditions. Objectives In an initial proof-of-concept trial, we assessed the feasibility and acceptability of a new, midlife-adapted, phone- and text message-based intervention using positive psychology (PP) skill-building and motivational interviewing (MI) techniques. We secondarily analyzed post-intervention changes in accelerometer-measured physical activity and self-reported outcomes. Methods The PP-MI intervention included six weekly phone sessions with a study trainer, with completion of PP activities and physical activity goals between calls, and in the subsequent six weeks briefer phone check-ins were conducted. Text messages over the 12-week intervention period were utilized to support participants and identify barriers to goal completion. Feasibility (session completion rates) and acceptability (participant ratings of intervention ease and utility) were assessed via descriptive statistics, and pre-post improvements in psychological, functional, and physical activity outcomes at 12 weeks were examined via mixed effects regression models. Results Twelve midlife adults with low baseline physical activity enrolled in the single-arm trial. Overall, 76.8% of all possible sessions were completed by participants, and mean ratings of weekly phone sessions were 8.9/10 (SD 1.6), exceeding our a priori thresholds for feasibility and acceptability. Participants demonstrated generally medium to large effect size magnitude improvements in accelerometer-measured physical activity, psychological outcomes, and function. Conclusions A novel, midlife-specific phone- and text-based PP-MI intervention was feasible and had promising effects on physical activity and other clinically relevant outcomes, supporting next-step testing of this program via a randomized controlled trial.

Abstract
Fitbit wearable devices provide users with objective data on their physical activity and sleep habits. However, little is known about how users develop their usage patterns and the key mechanisms underlying the development of such patterns. In this article, we report results from a longitudinal analysis of Fitbit usage behavior among a sample of college students. Survey and Fitbit data were collected from 692 undergraduates at the University of Notre Dame across two waves. We use a structural equation modeling strategy to examine the relationships among three dimensions of Fitbit usage behavior corresponding to three elements of the habit loop model: trust in the accuracy of Fitbit physical activity and sleep data (cue), intensity of Fitbit device use (routine), and adjustment of physical activity and sleep behaviors based on Fitbit data (reward). More than 75 percent of participants trusted the accuracy of Fitbit data and nearly half of the participants reported they adjusted their physical activities based on the data reported by their devices. Participants who trusted the Fitbit physical activity data also tended to trust the sleep data, and those who intensively used Fitbit devices tended to adjust both their physical activities and then sleep habits. Psychological states and traits such as depression, extroversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism help predict multiple dimensions of Fitbit usage behaviors. However, we find little evidence that trust, Fitbit usage, or perceived adjustment of activity or sleep were associated with actual changes in levels of sleep and activity. We discuss the implications of these findings for understanding when and how this new monitoring technology results in changes in people's behavior.

Abstract
PURPOSE This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the effect of wearable devices for improving physical activity and health-related outcomes in cancer survivors. METHODS CINAHL, Cochrane, Ebscohost, MEDLINE, Pubmed, ProQuest Health and Medical Complete, ProQuest Nursing and Allied Health Source, ScienceDirect, and SPORTDiscus databases were searched for randomized controlled trials published before September 1, 2020, that evaluated interventions involving wearable devices in cancer survivors. Standardized mean differences (SMDs) were calculated to assess effects on physical activity and health-related outcomes. Subgroup analyses were conducted to assess whether the effects differed by interventions and cancer characteristics. Risk of bias was assessed using the Cochrane risk of bias tool. RESULTS Thirty-five trials were included (breast cancer, n = 15, 43%). Intervention durations ranged between 4 weeks and 1 year. Most trials (n = 25, 71%) involved pedometer-based physical activity interventions. Seven (20%) involved Fitbit-based interventions, and 3 (9%) involved other wearable physical activity trackers (e.g., Polar, Garmin). Compared to usual care, wearable devices had moderate-to-large effects (SMD range 0.54-0.87, p < 0.001) on moderate-intensity physical activity, moderate-to-vigorous-intensity physical activity, total physical activity, and daily steps. Compared to usual care, those in the intervention had higher quality of life, aerobic fitness, physical function, and reduced fatigue (SMD range = 0.18-0.66, all p < 0.05). CONCLUSION Wearable physical activity trackers and pedometers are effective tools that increase physical activity and improve health-related outcomes in individuals with cancer. Identifying how these devices can be implemented for longer-term use with other intervention components remains an area for future research.

Abstract
Background Research on whether wearable devices and app-based interventions can effectively prevent metabolic syndrome (MetS) by increasing physical activity (PA) among middle-aged people living in the rural areas of South Korea remains insufficient. Objective The aim of this study was to determine whether mobile and wearable device interventions can improve health indicators, including PA, in MetS risk groups in rural South Korea. Methods In this clinical trial, performed from December 2019 to June 2020, participants were asked to use a wearable device (GalaxyWatch Active1) alone (standard intervention) or the wearable device and mobile app (Yonsei Health Korea) (enhanced intervention). Clinical measures and International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) scores were evaluated initially and after 6 months. The number of steps was monitored through the website. The primary outcome was the difference in PA and clinical measures between the enhanced intervention and standard intervention groups. The secondary outcome was the decrease in MetS factors related to the change in PA. Results A total of 267 participants were randomly selected, 221 of whom completed the 6-month study. Among the 221 participants, 113 were allocated to the enhanced intervention group and 108 were allocated to the standard intervention group. After 6 months, the body weight and BMI for the enhanced intervention group decreased by 0.6 (SD 1.87) and 0.21 (SD 0.76), respectively (P<.001). In both groups, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, waist circumference, and glycated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) decreased (P<.001). The total PA was approximately 2.8 times lower in the standard intervention group (mean 44.47, SD 224.85) than in the enhanced intervention group (mean 124.36, SD 570.0). Moreover, the enhanced intervention group achieved the recommended level of moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA), whereas the standard intervention group did not (188 minutes/week vs 118 minutes/week). Additionally, the number of participants in the enhanced intervention group (n=113) that reached 10,000 daily steps or more after the intervention increased from 9 (8.0%) to 26 (23.1%) (P=.002), whereas this number did not increase significantly in the standard intervention group (n=108), from 8 (7.4%) to 16 (14.8%) (P=.72). The number of participants without any MetS factors increased by 12 (11%) and 8 (7%) in the enhanced and standard intervention group, respectively. Conclusions PA monitoring and an intervention using wearable devices were effective in preventing MetS in a rural population in Korea. Blood pressure, waist circumference, and HbA1c were improved in both intervention groups, which were effective in reducing MetS factors. However, only the participants in the enhanced intervention group continuously increased their MVPA and step counts above the recommended level to prevent MetS. Body weight and BMI were further improved, and a higher number of participants with zero MetS factors was attained from the enhanced intervention. Abstract
Background Latina adolescents in the USA report some of the lowest rates of physical activity of any demographic subgroup; this is paralleled by a markedly higher lifetime risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes, and other conditions related to inactivity. Despite this, to date, no fully powered clinical trials have tested physical activity interventions specifically for this population. High use of mobile technologies (including text messages, smartphone apps, and social media) suggests this could be an appropriate intervention channel, while also having potential for broad reach. This paper describes the protocol for Chicas Fuertes, a fully powered randomized trial of a mobile technology-based physical activity intervention for Latina adolescents. Methods We plan to recruit 200 Latina teens (age 13–18) in San Diego, CA, currently engaging in ≤ 150 min/week of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) to be assigned 1:1 to the intervention or control groups. Those randomly assigned to the intervention group receive a one-on-one goal setting session followed by 6 months of mobile technology-based intervention, including a personalized website, Fitbit activity tracker and app, individually tailored text messages based on Fitbit data, and daily intervention content on Instagram. Those randomized to the control group receive only a Fitbit activity tracker. The main outcome is change in weekly minutes of MVPA from baseline to 6 months, measured both objectively (ActiGraph accelerometers and Fitbit Inspire HR) and subjectively (7-Day Physical Activity Recall Interview). Additional outcomes are maintenance of activity change at 12 months and changes in psychosocial constructs, including social support and self-efficacy, engagement with mobile technology channels, and costs of intervention delivery. We are also examining the potential mediators and moderators of the intervention. The efficacy of the intervention is analyzed using a mixed effects regression model, adjusting for any potential confounders not balanced by randomization. All analyses of accelerometer measured MVPA are also adjusted for wear time. Discussion The Chicas Fuertes trial uses widely available mobile technologies to target critical health behavior, physical activity, in Latina teens, a population with a high lifetime risk of lifestyle-related diseases. The results will speak to the efficacy and acceptability of the intervention, which has the potential for broad dissemination. Trial registration ClinicalTrials.govNCT04190225. Abstract
BACKGROUND Multicomponent mobile health approaches can improve lifestyle intervention results, although little is known about their long-term effectiveness. OBJECTIVE This study aims to evaluate the long-term effectiveness (12 months) of a multicomponent mobile health intervention-combining a smartphone app, an activity tracker wristband, and brief counseling, compared with a brief counseling group only-on weight loss and improving body composition, physical activity, and caloric intake in Spanish sedentary adults with overweight or obesity. METHODS We conducted a randomized controlled, multicenter clinical trial (Evident 3). A total of 650 participants were recruited from 5 primary care centers, with 318 participants in the intervention group (IG) and 332 in the control group (CG). All participants were briefly counseled about a healthy diet and physical activity at the baseline visit. For the 3-month intervention period, the IG received training to use the app to promote healthy lifestyles and the smart band (Mi Band 2, Xiaomi). All measurements were performed at baseline and at 3 and 12 months. Physical activity was measured using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Short Form. Nutritional habits were assessed using the Food Frequency Questionnaire and Adherence to Mediterranean diet questionnaire. RESULTS Of the 650 participants included, 563 (86.6%) completed the 3-month visit and 443 (68.2%) completed the 12-month visit. After 12 months, the IG showed net differences in weight (-0.26, 95% CI -1.21 to 0.70 kg; P=.02), BMI (-0.06, 95% CI -0.41 to 0.28 points; P=.01), waist-height ratio (-0.25, 95% CI -0.94 to 0.44; P=.03), body adiposity index (-0.33, 95% CI -0.77 to 0.11; P=.03), waist circumference (-0.48, 95% CI -1.62 to 0.66 cm, P=.04) and hip circumference (-0.69, 95% CI -1.62 to 0.25 cm; P=.03). Both groups lowered daily caloric intake and increased adherence to the Mediterranean diet, with no differences between the groups. The IG increased light physical activity time (32.6, 95% CI -30.3 to 95.04 min/week; P=.02) compared with the CG. Analyses by subgroup showed changes in body composition variables in women, people aged >50 years, and married people. CONCLUSIONS The low-intensity intervention of the Evident 3 study showed, in the IG, benefits in weight loss, some body composition variables, and time spent in light physical activity compared with the CG at 3 months, but once the devices were collected, the downward trend was not maintained at the 12-month follow-up. Abstract
Nurses with rotating shifts, including night shifts, have suffered from low physical activity during the COVID-19 pandemic and lower sleep quality due to the disruption of their circadian rhythm. This study aimed to develop and examine the effectiveness of a mobile wellness program on daily steps, sleep quality, exercise self-efficacy, intrinsic motivation for exercise, self-rated fatigue, and wellness. A cluster randomized controlled trial design was used to examine the effectiveness of the mobile wellness program for nurses with rotating shifts. Sixty nurses from one university hospital participated and were allocated to an intervention group and a control group. The intervention group received a 12-week mobile wellness program to improve their physical activity and sleep quality, and the control group was only given a Fitbit to self-monitor their health behaviors. There were significant differences between the two groups in daily steps (p = 0.000), three components (subjective sleep quality, sleep disturbance, daytime dysfunction) of the PSQI, exercise self-efficacy, intrinsic motivation for exercise, and wellness. In conclusion, this study provides meaningful information that the mobile wellness program using Fitbit, online exercise using Zoom, online health coaching on a Korean mobile platform, and motivational text messages effectively promoted physical activity and sleep quality for nurses with rotating shifts during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract
Objective This manuscript reports on the protocol for a three-arm randomized controlled trial aiming to assess the effect a self-determination theory-based eHealth intervention on physical activity among insufficiently active women who are overweight or obese. Methods The intervention-of-interest provided (A) six weekly behavioural support emails, (B) a wearable activity tracker, and (C) a copy and verbal explanation of the Canadian physical activity guidelines, and was compared to an intervention that provided (B + C) and another that provided (C). Women from a local community were invited to participate in this study. Participants were recruited between September 2018 and March 2019. Data were collected using self-report and direct measures three times: at baseline (week 0), post-intervention (week 7), and at follow-up (week 21). The primary outcome was self-reported total metabolic equivalent minutes of physical activity per week (MET-m/week); exploratory outcomes included number of days of strength training per week, self-determination theory constructs (i.e. motivational regulations, basic psychological needs satisfaction and thwarting), and well-being indicators (i.e. affect, vitality, depression). Conclusion Findings will provide insight into which combination of intervention components may be more effective at promoting physical activity among insufficiently active women who are overweight or obese, and thus inform the design of future interventions aiming to promote physical activity.

Abstract
Background Physical activity (PA) plays a fundamental role in combating the current obesity epidemic; however, most women who are overweight or obese are generally physically inactive. Wearable activity tracker interventions can help increase the PA levels in this population. Supplementing such interventions with behavioral support emails may further improve their effectiveness, but this remains to be confirmed. Objective This study aims to determine if adding behavioral support emails to a wearable activity tracker intervention can further increase PA levels among women who are overweight or obese in comparison to a wearable activity tracker–only intervention and a control condition. Methods Women with a BMI ≥25 kg/m2 who were not meeting the Canadian PA guidelines for aerobic and strength training were randomized into 1 of 3 groups. Group 1 received 6 weekly behavioral support emails, a wearable activity tracker, and a copy of the Canadian PA guidelines. Group 2 received a wearable activity tracker and a copy of the Canadian PA guidelines, and group 3 (control condition) received a copy of the Canadian PA guidelines. Self-reported data for walking and moderate to vigorous intensity PA were collected preintervention (week 0; prerandomization), postintervention (7 weeks postrandomization), and at follow-up (21 weeks postrandomization) and analyzed as metabolic equivalent of task minutes per week. In addition, potential mechanisms of behavior change (ie, basic psychological needs satisfaction and motivational regulations) were assessed for within- and between-group differences at all 3 time points. Data were analyzed using nonparametric statistical tests. Results A total of 49 women were recruited; data from 47 women (mean age 37.57 years, SD 11.78 years; mean BMI 31.69 kg/m2, SD 5.97 kg/m2) were available for analysis. Group 1 reported a significant increase in walking from preintervention to postintervention (χ22=7.5; P=.02) but not in moderate to vigorous intensity PA (P=.24). Group 1 also reported significant increases in perceptions of competence from preintervention to follow-up (χ22=7.6; P=.02) and relatedness from preintervention to follow-up (χ22=8.7; P=.005). Increases in perceived autonomy were observed for group 2 (χ22=7.0) and group 3 (χ22=10.6). There were no significant changes in the motivational regulations within the groups. The difference between the groups was not significant for any outcome variable. Conclusions The results suggest that adding behavioral support emails to a wearable activity tracker intervention may help to increase time spent walking and perceptions of competence and relatedness for PA among women who are overweight or obese. Abstract
Keeping a physically active lifestyle requires consistent self-regulatory effort such as action control (e.g., continuously monitoring and evaluating a behavior in terms of one's goals). Involving the romantic partner in interventions might be particularly effective in the long run. The present study examined the long-term and transfer effects of an action control intervention in couples using text messaging for promoting target persons' and partners' physical activity, anthropometric measures and physical fitness 6 months post baseline. A total of 121 overweight and obese romantic couples, randomly allocated to an intervention (n = 60; information + action control text messages) or a control group (n = 61; information only) and to participating as target person or partner, completed baseline assessments (T1). 100 couples (82.6%) completed the 6-month follow-up (T3) assessment. Primary outcomes included self-reported moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and objective MVPA and MVPA adherence using triaxial accelerometers across a diary period of 14 days after T3. Secondary outcomes included BMI, waist-to-hip circumference and physical fitness (target persons only) using a submaximal aerobic cycle test. At T3, there were no significant between-group differences between target persons and partners with regard to their objective MVPA, self-reported MVPA, BMI, waist-hip ratio or physical fitness. No significant changes in outcomes were observed from T1 to T3; however, changes in BMI from T1 to T3 between target persons and partners in the intervention group were associated. Overall, the brief 14-days action control intervention was not effective in improving target person's physical activity, body measures and physical fitness in the long-term. Moreover, no long-term benefits for partners emerged. While brief ecological momentary interventions might be a promising tool for short-term effects, future studies are needed to test features enhancing long-term effectiveness. Associations in romantic partners' changes suggest that dyadic interventions can be a promising approach, as changes induced in one partner may then transfer over to the other (controlled-trials.com ISRCTN15705531).

Abstract
This study compared heart rate (HR) measurements taken from two wrist-worn devices; the Empatica E4 and the Apple Watch Series 5, to that taken from a Polar H10 chest strap. Ten healthy adult volunteers took part in a laboratory validation study and performed a treadmill exercise protocol. A single-subject validity study was also conducted to evaluate the accuracy of continuous HR measurements obtained during free-living activities. The participant wore both wrist devices, as well as the Polar H10 for 12-hours, as she continued her habitual daily activities. The key findings of the laboratory study were that the Apple Watch was accurate at assessing HR compared to the Polar H10 with Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) values < 5% during treadmill exercise. The accuracy of the E4 however was generally poor with MAPE values > 15%. Findings from the single-subject validity study indicate that the Apple Watch produces accurate measurements of HR, whereas the E4 device overestimated HR, except for during the more strenuous activities undertaken where HR was underestimated.Clinical Relevance- The Apple Watch has acceptable accuracy in measuring HR during treadmill exercise and during free-living activities in healthy adult volunteers.

Abstract
AIM This study explores the possible impact of wearables on psychological distress and their implications on designs. METHOD The study conceptualizes and tests two exploratory models by analyzing the US-based Health Information National Trends Survey of 2019 and 2020. Six variants from the databases were used in the study as predictors. We used models 4 and 6 of the Hayes PROCESS macros to test our conceptual parallel and sequential mediation models, respectively. RESULTS The finding indicates significant and negative indirect effects of 'Use of wearable device' on 'Psychological distress.' In parallel mediation models, 'self-care' and 'health perception' were noted to be significant mediators. Wearable devices were associated with improved 'Health perception,' 'Self-care,' and longer 'workout duration,', which in turn helped reduce 'psychological distress' (better mental health). The sequential mediation model captured the indirect effect of 'Use of wearable device' on 'Psychological distress' when sequentially mediated by 'workout duration,' 'BMI,' 'self-care,' and 'health perception' in the given order. CONCLUSION As the adoption of digital wearables is increasing due to their growing potential to augment physiological and psychosocial health, it is critical that these technologies are designed to address the needs of users from diverse backgrounds (race, education level, age).

Abstract
Background: Despite the growing popularity of mobile app interventions, specific engagement components of mobile apps have not been well studied. Methods: The objectives of this scoping review are to determine which components of mobile health intervention apps encouraged or hindered engagement, and examine how studies measured engagement. Results: A PubMed search on March 5, 2020 yielded 239 articles that featured the terms engagement, mobile app/mobile health, and adult. After applying exclusion criteria, only 54 studies were included in the final analysis. Discussion: Common app components associated with increased engagement included: personalized content/feedback, data visualization, reminders/push notifications, educational information/material, logging/self-monitoring functions, and goal-setting features. On the other hand, social media integration, social forums, poor app navigation, and technical difficulties appeared to contribute to lower engagement rates or decreased usage. Notably, the review revealed a great variability in how engagement with mobile health apps is measured due to lack of established processes. Conclusion: There is a critical need for controlled studies to provide guidelines and standards to help facilitate engagement and its measurement in research and clinical trial work using mobile health intervention apps.

Abstract
Objective: To test the effects of text messages for promoting physical activities in people with prediabetes. Methods: This randomized controlled trial was performed in participants with prediabetes. Participants were recruited from a primary care unit. Allocation to the study groups used a stratified block randomization. All participants received physical activity education at baseline. The intervention group additionally received supportive text messages by using mobile phone text messages. Participants were assessed at baseline at 8 and 12 weeks. The primary outcome measure was physical activity energy. Secondary outcomes included weight, body mass index, waist circumstance, and blood pressure. Results: All participants were included in the analyses (n = 324; control: n = 162; intervention: n = 162). Mean physical activity energy was significantly increased in those who received text messages at 8 weeks, increasing 1,590.73 Metabolic Equivalent of Tasks (METs)/min/week (95% confidence interval [CI]: 837.72, 2343.75) in the intervention group and 407.39 METs/min/weeks (95% CI: -267.59, 1082.36) in the control group with an adjusted mean difference of -1,183 METs/min/weeks (95% CI: -2190.11, -176.58, p = 0.02). Over the 12 weeks follow-up period, mean physical activity energy did not differ statistically by group. Mixed-model repeated-measures analysis of the total physical energy revealed no significant differences, with an adjusted mean difference 273.3 METs/min/week (95% CI: -530.64, 1077.21, p = 0.513). However, moderate physical energy was significantly increased to 256.40 METs/min/week (95% CI: 17.20, 495.63, p = 0.040). Conclusion: Text messaging significant in physical activity at the 8-week. But, text messaging no significant in physical activity at 12-week. Further research is needed to identify optimal times to send messages to people with prediabetes.
