Abstract
BACKGROUND This study examined the association between memory function and reduced olfactory and gustatory function among independent community-dwelling older adults. METHODS This cross-sectional study included 127 older adults (65.4% women). We assessed their memory, odor, and taste identification skills. Open essence (OE) test and taste strips (TS) were used to identify hyposmia (OE test ≤6) and hypogeusia (TS test ≤8), respectively. RESULTS Participants with severe hyposmia had significantly poorer memory functions compared to participants without severe hyposmia. After adjusting for covariates, multivariate logistic regression models revealed a significant association between immediate recognition performance and a decreased likelihood of severe hyposmia (odds ratio=0.65; 95% confidence interval 0.47-0.90). We observed no significant association between taste function and memory. CONCLUSION Memory function may be associated with olfactory impairment in older adults.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Quantitative olfactory assessment has demonstrated clinical utility for the evaluation of a range of neurologic, psychiatric, and sinonasal conditions. Here, we provide age, sex, race, and education-specific normative data for the 12-item Sniffin Sticks Odor Identification Test (SSOIT-12) in older Black and White U.S. adults without preclinical or clinical dementia or sinonasal disease. METHOD A sample of 2,224 Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities study participants aged 66-89 years were included. A normative regression equation was developed using a linear model for the association of age, sex, race, and education with odor identification score. Regression-based normative mean scores and percentiles were generated by age, sex, race, and education groups. RESULTS Participants (mean age = 74 years, 59% women, 20% Black, 48% > high school education) had a mean SSOIT-12 score of 9.8. Age, sex, race, and education were all associated with odor identification performance (all ps < .05). A linear regression model for the predicted SSOIT-12 score was developed for use with an individual's actual SSOIT-12 score in order to calculate the Z-score and corresponding percentile for a specific age, sex, race, and education group. Data are also reported in tabular format. CONCLUSIONS Our study provides SSOIT-12 normative data obtained from a large population of White and Black older adults without preclinical or clinical dementia or sinonasal disease living in the USA. These findings can aid clinicians in assessing the degree of olfactory loss, establishing concordance with a person's perception of olfactory difficulties and quantitatively monitoring changes in olfactory performance over time.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Frailty is prevalent among older adults with asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (obstructive lung diseases [OLDs]). Frailty and OLD's co-occurrence is associated with increased hospitalization/mortality. Chemosensory dysfunction is closely connected to both OLD and frailty. We evaluated the utility of olfactory decline as a biomarker of frailty in the setting of OLD. METHODS We performed a prospective, longitudinal, nationally representative study of community-dwelling older US adults in the National Social Life, Health and Aging Project, an omnibus in-home survey. Respondents reported a physician's diagnosis of OLD. Decline in odor identification and sensitivity over 5 years and frailty (adapted fried frailty phenotype criteria) were measured using standard tools. Multivariate logistic regressions evaluated the association between OLD status, olfactory decline, and frailty. RESULTS We compared individuals with OLD (n = 98; mean age 71.2 years, 59.2% women) and those without OLD (n = 1036; mean age 69.5 years, 58.9% women). Olfactory identification decline was associated with developing frailty over the 5-year follow-up period in individuals with OLD (odds ratio [OR] = 9.1, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 2.1-38.6, p = 0.003). Olfactory decline predicted incidence of frailty in individuals with OLD (identification: OR = 4.8, 95% CI = 1.3-17.5, P = 0.018; sensitivity: OR = 6.1, 95%CI = 1.2-31.0, p = 0.030) but not in those without OLD adjusting for demographics, heavy alcohol use, current smoking, and comorbidity. Results were robust to different thresholds for olfactory decline and frailty development. CONCLUSIONS Older adults with OLD who experience olfactory decline face higher odds of developing frailty. Use of olfactory decline as a biomarker to identify frailty could allow earlier intervention and decrease adverse outcomes for high-risk older adults with OLD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We examined the relationship between baseline olfactory performance and incident significant depressive symptoms and longitudinal depression trajectories in well-functioning older adults. Inflammation and cognitive status were examined as potential mediators. METHODS Older adults (n = 2 125, 71-82 years, 51% female, 37% Black) completed an odor identification task at Year 3 (our study baseline) of the Health, Aging, and Body Composition study. Cognitive assessments, depressive symptoms, and inflammatory markers were ascertained across multiple visits over 8 years. Discrete-time complementary log-log models, group-based trajectory models, and multivariable-adjusted multinomial logistic regression were employed to assess the relationship between baseline olfaction and incident depression and longitudinal depression trajectories. Mediation analysis assessed the influence of cognitive status on these relationships. RESULTS Individuals with lower olfaction had an increased risk of developing significant depressive symptoms at follow-up (hazard ratio = 1.04, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.00, 1.08). Of the 3 patterns of longitudinal depression scores identified (stable low, stable moderate, and stable high), poorer olfaction was associated with a 6% higher risk of membership in the stable moderate (relative risk ratio [RRR] = 1.06, 95% CI: 1.02, 1.10)/stable high (RRR = 1.06, 95% CI: 1.00, 1.12) groups, compared to the stable low group. Poor cognitive status, but not inflammation, partially mediated the relationship between olfactory performance and incident depression symptom severity. CONCLUSIONS Suboptimal olfaction could serve as a prognostic indicator of vulnerability for the development of late-life depression. These findings underscore the need for a greater understanding of olfaction in late-life depression and the demographic, cognitive, and biological factors that influence these relationships over time.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Quantitative (hyposmia and anosmia) and qualitative (phantosmia and parosmia) olfactory disorders are common consequences of COVID-19 infection found in more than 38% of patients even months after resolution of acute disease. SARS-CoV-2 has tropism for angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) in the respiratory system, suggesting that it is the mechanism of damage to the olfactory neuroepithelium and of involvement at the central nervous system. The olfactory bulb is the organ with the highest insulin uptake in the central nervous system. Insulin increases the production of Growth Factors (GF); therefore, in this study, the administration of intranasal insulin is proposed as a viable treatment for olfactory disturbances. The aim of this study was to obtain improvement in olfaction after 4 weeks of intranasal insulin administration in a group of patients presenting chronic olfactory disturbances secondary to COVID-19 infection, quantified using the Threshold, Discrimination, and Identification (TDI) score based on the Sniffin Sticks®. METHODS Experimental, longitudinal, prolective and prospective study of patients with a previous diagnosis of COVID-19 in the last 3-18 months and who persisted with anosmia or hyposmia. The sample size was calculated with "satulator". The intervention was performed from January to May 2022. Throughout four appointments, a baseline olfactory measurement was obtained using the TDI score based on the Sniffin Sticks® test. In the first three appointments, Gelfoam® cottonoids soaked in 40 IU of NPH insulin were placed on the nasal roof of each nostril for 15 min. Descriptive statistics, student's paired t test and a multiple linear regression were utilized to ascertain statistical significance of the outcome on the TDI score obtained on the fourth and final appointment. RESULTS 27 patients were included in the study. Table 1 summarizes the sample characteristics. The results exhibit that 93% of the sample had an improvement. The initial mean TDI score was 67% (63-71) compared to the final mean of 83% (80-86, p < 0.01). TDI subsection analysis is shown in Table 2. There was no significant difference in pre-intervention and post-intervention glucose measurements after the intranasal insulin administration. CONCLUSIONS The administration of intranasal insulin has promising results, pointing towards an alternative of treatment for chronic olfactory disturbances secondary to neuroepithelial damage caused by upper respiratory tract infections. Furthermore, this is the first study to use a three-point assessment of olfaction in post-COVID-19 patients, while using the Sniffin Sticks® TDI score adapted to Latin Spanish.

Abstract
The sense of smell allows for the assessment of the chemical composition of volatiles in our environment. Different factors are associated with reduced olfactory function, including age, sex, as well as health and lifestyle conditions. However, most studies that aimed at identifying the variables that drive olfactory function in the population suffered from methodological weaknesses in study designs and participant selection, such as the inclusion of convenience sample or only of certain age groups, or recruitment biases. We aimed to overcome these issues by investigating the Cooperative Health Research in South Tyrol (CHRIS) cohort, a population-based cohort, by using a validated odor identification test. Specifically, we hypothesized that a series of medical, demographic and lifestyle variables is associated with odor identification abilities. In addition, our goal was to provide clinicians and researchers with normative values for the Sniffin' Sticks identification set, after exclusion of individuals with impaired nasal patency. We included 6,944 participants without acute nasal obstruction and assessed several biological, social, and medical parameters. A basic model determined that age, sex, years of education, and smoking status together explained roughly 13% of the total variance in the data. We further observed that variables related to medical (positive screening for cognitive impairment and for Parkinson's disease, history of skull fracture, stage 2 hypertension) and lifestyle (alcohol abstinence) conditions had a negative effect on odor identification scores. Finally, we provide clinicians with normative values for both versions of the Sniffin' Sticks odor identification test, i.e. with 16 items and with 12 items.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION No studies have reported data on 3-year prevalence and recovery rates of self-reported COVID-19-related olfactory and gustatory dysfunction. The aim of the present study was to estimate the 3-year prevalence and recovery rate of self-reported COVID-19-related chemosensory dysfunction in a cohort of patients with antecedent mild COVID-19. METHODS This is a prospective observational study, measuring the prevalence of altered sense of smell or taste at follow-up and their variation from baseline, on adult patients consecutively assessed at Treviso and Trieste University Hospitals, who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 RNA by polymerase chain reaction during March 2020. RESULTS Overall, out of 403 respondents, 267 patients (66.3%) reported an altered sense of smell or taste (SNOT-22 > 0) at baseline, while 56 (13.9%), 29 (7.2%), and 21 (5.2%) reported such alterations at 6-24 months, 2 years, and 3 years, respectively. Among the 267 patients with COVID-19-associated smell or taste dysfunction at baseline, 246 (92.1%) reported complete resolution at 3 years. Of the patients who still experienced smell or taste dysfunction 2 years after COVID-19, 27.6% and 37.9% recovered completely and partially, respectively, at the 3-year follow-up. CONCLUSION Among subjects with antecedent mildly symptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection, the 3-year prevalence and recovery rate of COVID-19-related alteration in sense of smell or taste was 5% and 92%, respectively. In approximately two-thirds of patients experiencing chemosensory dysfunction still 2 years after COVID-19, it is still possible to observe a delayed complete or partial recovery after a period of 3 years, while the remaining one-third of individuals continues to have unchanged persistent chemosensory alteration.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES The APOE ε4 allele confers susceptibility to faster decline in odor identification and subsequently to Alzheimer disease (AD). Odor identification requires recognizing and naming odors and detecting them (odor sensitivity). Whether APOE ε4 is associated with decline of odor sensitivity and whether such decline serves as a harbinger of cognitive decline and AD remains unclear. We determined whether and when APOE ε4 affects decline in odor sensitivity, odor identification, and cognition in the National Social Life Health and Aging Project (NSHAP). METHODS We used data from NSHAP, a nationally representative survey study of home-dwelling US older adults. Olfaction was measured over time (odor identification in 2005, 2010, and 2015; odor sensitivity in 2010 and 2015; both using validated tests). Cognition was measured with a modified version of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment in 2010 and 2015. Genotyping was performed using DNA samples collected in 2010. Odor sensitivity and identification were compared among APOE ε4 carriers and noncarriers stratified by age. Relationships between APOE ε4, odor sensitivity, odor identification, and cognition were analyzed in cross-section using ordinal logistic regression and longitudinally using mixed-effects models adjusted for confounders. RESULTS Odor sensitivity was measured in 865 respondents, odor identification in 1,156 respondents, and cognition in 864 respondents; all these respondents had genetic data available. Odor sensitivity deficits in APOE ε4 carriers were apparent at ages 65-69 years, whereas odor identification deficits did not appear until ages 75-79 years. Subsequently, odor sensitivity did not decline more rapidly with aging in APOE ε4 carriers compared with that in noncarriers (carrier status and aging interaction: odds ratio [OR] 1.44, 95% CI 0.94-2.19, p = 0.092), whereas odor identification declined more rapidly in carriers (aging 10 years interaction: OR 0.26, 95% CI 0.13-0.52, p < 0.001). As expected, and in parallel to odor identification, cognition declined more rapidly in APOE ε4 carriers (interaction: OR 0.55, 95% CI 0.34-0.89, p = 0.015). DISCUSSION APOE ε4 affects decline of odor sensitivity earlier than odor identification or cognition. Thus, testing odor sensitivity may be useful to predict future impaired cognitive function. Identifying the mechanism underlying these relationships will elucidate the key role of olfaction in neurodegeneration during aging.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Olfactory impairment is increasingly recognized as a biomarker of frailty, but the relationship between olfactory subdomains that describe peripheral or central dysfunction and frailty remains unexplored. METHODS We examined 1 160 older adults from the National Social Life, Health, and Aging Project Wave 3. Olfactory identification (OI): the ability to identify an odorant; and olfactory sensitivity (OS): the ability to detect the presence of an odorant, were assessed using 5- and 6-point measures, respectively. Frailty was operationalized as both a 37-item frailty index (FI) and the 5-item Physical Frailty Phenotype (PFP). Mixed models were fit to examine the association between OI, OS, FI, and PFP, while adjusting for demographic and clinical covariates. RESULTS Participants in the most-frail PFP category had lower OI and OS scores (OI: 3.88 vs 4.19, p = .016; OS: 3.15 vs 3.47, p = .031), whereas participants in the most-frail FI category exhibited lower OI scores but not OS scores when compared to nonfrail participants (OI: 3.72 vs 4.27, p = .014; OS: 3.19 vs 3.43, p = .476). Adjusted mixed models showed that a point increase in OI was associated with a lower PFP score (β = -0.107, p = .006) and FI score (β = -0.009, p = .010). A point increase in OS was associated with a lower PFP score (β = -0.058, p = .016) but not FI score (β = -0.004, p = .064). CONCLUSION Both OS and OI, predominantly peripheral and central measures of olfaction, respectively, are associated with frailty implicating olfaction as a potential biomarker and risk factor for frailty.

Abstract
Aging contributes to the deterioration of the olfactory system in humans. Several studies indicate that the olfactory identification test alone may function as a screening test for olfactory dysfunction and they are more feasible to apply in clinical practice. Olfactory identification may be a predictor for cognitive impairment. Multiple studies have considered the use of odor identification as a measure to identify the conversion from normality to mild cognitive impairment or dementia. The objectives were (i) to elucidate the associations between cognitive status and olfactory identification performance in aging; (ii) understand the predictive value of olfactory capacity in identifying subjects with cognitive impairment risk; and (iii) to study how cognitive status and olfactory identification relate with other variables of wellness in aging, such as functional capabilities and clinical measures. For this purpose, a group of 149 participants (77.15 ± 7.29 years; 73 women of 76.7 ± 8 years and 76 men of 77.6 ± 6.52 years) were recruited and were subjected to a sociodemographic questionnaire, a psychological screening tool of general cognitive status, an olfactory identification evaluation, and clinical measures. The participants were divided into groups based on their cutoff scores of previous scientific reports about the Spanish version of Montreal Cognitive Assessment. Our results indicate an age-associated decline in olfactory identification ability and intensity of odor perception. The predictive ability of olfactory identification scores for the risk of mild and severe impairment is around 80%. Olfactory identification decreases with cognitive function. Performance in odor identification is associated with impairment of episodic memory and executive functions. These findings further our current understanding of the association between cognition and olfaction, and support olfactory assessment in screening those at higher risk of dementia.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Exposure to particulate matter of 10 μm or less in diameter (PM10) has been implicated in pulmonary and cardiovascular diseases. However, the effect of PM10 on olfaction has not been well established. We estimated individual acute and chronic PM10 exposure levels in a large Brazilian cohort and related them to the ability to identify odors. METHODS Adults from São Paulo (n = 1358) were recruited from areas with different levels of air pollution. To verify individual exposure to air pollution, the averages of 30, 60, 90, 180 and 364 days of PM10 were interpolated to subjects' zip codes using the kriging method. Olfactory identification performance was tested using the University of Pennsylvania Smell Identification Test (UPSIT®). Multiple linear regressions were used to calculate the effect of air pollution on olfactory identification performance, controlling for demographic and other variables that affect the sense of smell. RESULTS Acute exposures to PM10 were related to worse UPSIT® scores, including 30- (β = - 0.94, 95% Confidence Interval [CI] - 0.98, - 0.89), 60- (β = - 1.09, 95% CI = - 1.13, - 1.04) and 90-day intervals (β = - 1.06, 95% CI - 1.10, - 1.02) (reference for β: 1 µm/m3 increase in PM10 exposure per point decrease in UPSIT® score). Chronic exposures were also associated with worse olfaction for both 180- (β = - 1.06, 95% CI - 1.10, - 1.03) and 364-day (β = - 0.87, 95% CI - 0.90, - 0.84) intervals. As in prior work, men, older, low-income, and low-schooling people demonstrated worse olfactory performance. CONCLUSION Acute and chronic exposure to PM10 is strongly associated with olfactory identification performance in Brazilian adults. Understanding the mechanisms which underlie these relationships could help to improve chemosensory function with a large public health impact.

Abstract
Objectives: Olfaction is an important correlate of later-life health, including cognition and mortality risk. Environmental enrichment protects against olfactory decline, yet little research considers the social context as a source of sensory enrichment or stimulation. This study examines how exposure to social complexity (i.e., diversity or novelty in social networks and activities) shapes later-life olfaction. Methods: Cross-sectional and longitudinal ordered logit models analyze data from 1,447 older adults interviewed at Rounds 1 and 2 of the National Social Life, Health, and Aging Project. Results: Exposure to greater social complexity (larger social networks, greater network diversity) is associated with significantly better olfaction at baseline. Increases in network diversity and fewer network losses significantly protect against olfactory decline over time. Discussion: Findings highlight the social context as an important, yet relatively overlooked source of sensory enrichment, and underscore the need for biological applications to integrate social life dynamics into studies of health trajectories.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies assessing olfactory function and cognition have mostly been cross-sectional, and few have investigated the Asian geriatric population. OBJECTIVE To examine the relationships of olfaction with global or domain-specific cognitive function in Taiwanese community-dwelling older adults. METHODS This cohort study (2015-2019) is part of the Taiwan Initiative for Geriatric Epidemiological Research. The Taiwanese version of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA-T) and a battery of neuropsychological tests were assessed at baseline and at a two-year follow-up. The cross-culture modified Sniffin' Sticks Identification Test (SSIT) was utilized to measure olfactory function. Generalized linear mixed models were used to examine the association of olfaction with cognitive performance over two years. RESULTS Data were collected from 376 participants (55.1% women), with a mean age of 75.6 years. A one-point decrease in the SSIT score (worsening of olfaction) was associated with worse global cognition (MoCA-T: βˆ= -0.13), memory (βˆ= -0.08 to -0.06), and verbal fluency (βˆ= -0.07). Compared with an SSIT score ≥ 11 (normosmia), an SSIT score < 8 (anosmia) was associated with worse global cognition (MoCA-T: βˆ= -0.99), memory (βˆ= -0.48 to -0.42), executive function (Trail Making Test A: βˆ= -0.36), attention (digit span backward: βˆ= -0.34), and verbal fluency (βˆ= -0.45). After stratified analyses, the associations remained in older adults ≥ 75 years, males, and non-carriers of apolipoprotein E ɛ4 in terms of global cognition, memory, and verbal fluency. CONCLUSIONS Odor identification deficits were associated with poor global or domain-specific cognitive function in a four-year cohort of community-dwelling older adults. Cognitive assessments should be conducted in dementia-free elderly individuals with impaired odor identification.

Abstract
Olfactory dysfunction is manifested in a wide range of neurological and psychiatric diseases, and often emerges prior to the onset of more classical symptoms and signs. From a behavioral perspective, olfactory deficits typically arise in conjunction with impairments of cognition, motivation, memory, and emotion. However, a conceptual framework for explaining the impact of olfactory processing on higher brain functions in health and disease remains lacking. Here we aim to provide circuit-level insights into this question by synthesizing recent advances in olfactory network connectivity with other cortical brain regions such as the prefrontal cortex. We will focus on social cognition as a representative model for exploring and critically evaluating the relationship between olfactory cortices and higher-order cortical regions in rodent models. Although rodents do not recapitulate all dimensions of human social cognition, they have experimentally accessible neural circuits and well-established behavioral tests for social motivation, memory/recognition, and hierarchy, which can be extrapolated to other species including humans. In particular, the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) has been recognized as a key brain region in mediating social cognition in both rodents and humans. This review will highlight the underappreciated connectivity, both anatomical and functional, between the olfactory system and mPFC circuitry, which together provide a neural substrate for olfactory modulation of social cognition and social behaviors. We will provide future perspectives on the functional investigation of the olfactory-mPFC circuit in rodent models and discuss how to translate such animal research to human studies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The literature regarding clinical olfaction, olfactory loss, and olfactory dysfunction has expanded rapidly over the past two decades, with an exponential rise in the past year. There is substantial variability in the quality of this literature and a need to consolidate and critically review the evidence. It is with that aim that we have gathered experts from around the world to produce this International Consensus on Allergy and Rhinology: Olfaction (ICAR:O). METHODS Using previously described methodology, specific topics were developed relating to olfaction. Each topic was assigned a literature review, evidence-based review, or evidence-based review with recommendations format as dictated by available evidence and scope within the ICAR:O document. Following iterative reviews of each topic, the ICAR:O document was integrated and reviewed by all authors for final consensus. RESULTS The ICAR:O document reviews nearly 100 separate topics within the realm of olfaction, including diagnosis, epidemiology, disease burden, diagnosis, testing, etiology, treatment, and associated pathologies. CONCLUSION This critical review of the existing clinical olfaction literature provides much needed insight and clarity into the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of patients with olfactory dysfunction, while also clearly delineating gaps in our knowledge and evidence base that we should investigate further.

Machine Learning Refutes Loss of Smell as a Risk Indicator of Diabetes Mellitus. J Clin Med 2021; 10:jcm10214971. Abstract
Because it is associated with central nervous changes, and olfactory dysfunction has been reported with increased prevalence among persons with diabetes, this study addressed the question of whether the risk of developing diabetes in the next 10 years is reflected in olfactory symptoms. In a cross-sectional study, in 164 individuals seeking medical consulting for possible diabetes, olfactory function was evaluated using a standardized clinical test assessing olfactory threshold, odor discrimination, and odor identification. Metabolomics parameters were assessed via blood concentrations. The individual diabetes risk was quantified according to the validated German version of the “FINDRISK” diabetes risk score. Machine learning algorithms trained with metabolomics patterns predicted low or high diabetes risk with a balanced accuracy of 63–75%. Similarly, olfactory subtest results predicted the olfactory dysfunction category with a balanced accuracy of 85–94%, occasionally reaching 100%. However, olfactory subtest results failed to improve the prediction of diabetes risk based on metabolomics data, and metabolomics data did not improve the prediction of the olfactory dysfunction category based on olfactory subtest results. Results of the present study suggest that olfactory function is not a useful predictor of diabetes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Much is known about individual sensory deficits among older adults, but there is a dearth of information about the prevalence of multiple concurrent sensory deficits in this population. METHODS We evaluated the prevalence of individual and multiple sensory impairments at the most recent clinic visit among participants aged 24 years and older in the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging (BLSA) (hearing, vision, olfaction, proprioception, and vestibular function) and Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study (ARIC) (hearing, vision, olfaction). We compared observed prevalence of multiple sensory impairments with expected prevalence based on compounded probabilities of multiple impairments using Fisher Exact Tests. Also, we evaluated the comparability of different measures used between these two studies. RESULTS In both studies, the prevalence of each individual sensory impairment was common (>10%), and higher with older age, and the most common pattern of co-occurring sensory impairments was hearing and visual impairments (17.4% [BLSA]; 50.2% [ARIC]). In BLSA, the pattern that differed the most between observed and expected prevalence was combined hearing, vision, and olfactory impairments (observed 5.2% vs. 1.4% expected, p=0.01). In ARIC, this difference was much smaller (observed 8.1% vs. 7.2% expected, p=0.49). CONCLUSIONS Although concurrent hearing and vision impairments were the most common co-occurring deficits, combined hearing, vision and olfactory impairments are most likely to co-occur above chance, especially at older ages.

Abstract
Alterations in olfactory functions are proposed to be early biomarkers for neurodegeneration. Many neurodegenerative diseases are age-related, including two of the most common, Parkinson's disease (PD) and Alzheimer's disease (AD). The establishment of biomarkers that promote early risk identification is critical for the implementation of early treatment to postpone or avert pathological development. Olfactory dysfunction (OD) is seen in 90% of early-stage PD patients and 85% of patients with early-stage AD, which makes it an attractive biomarker for early diagnosis of these diseases. Here, we systematically review widely applied smelling tests available for humans as well as olfaction assessments performed in some animal models and the relationships between OD and normal aging, PD, AD, and other conditions. The utility of OD as a biomarker for neurodegenerative disease diagnosis and future research directions are also discussed.

Abstract
Purpose of Review Olfactory dysfunction dramatically impairs quality of life with a prevalence of 20% in the general adult population. Psychophysical olfactory testing has been widely used to evaluate the ability to smell due to its validated utility and feasibility in clinic. This review summarizes the current literature regarding psychophysical olfactory testing and the clinical relevance of the olfactory testing with different components. Furthermore, the review highlights the diagnosis and treatment value of olfactory subtests in patients with olfactory dysfunction. Recent Findings With the accumulation of studies of psychophysical olfactory testing in olfactory disorders, the clinical relevance of olfactory testing with different components is expanding. Different olfactory domains present with distinct olfactory processing and cortical activity. Psychophysical assessment of olfaction with three domains reveals different levels of olfactory processing and might assist with analyzing the pathophysiologic mechanism of the various olfactory disorders. Furthermore, olfactory thresholds provided the largest amount of non-redundant information to the olfactory diagnosis. Sinonasal olfactory dysfunction and non-sinonasal-related olfactory dysfunction are emerging classifications of smell disorders with certain characteristics of olfactory impairment and different responses to the therapy including steroids, sinus surgery, and olfactory training. Summary These recent advancements should promote the understanding of psychophysical olfactory testing, the association between individual subcomponents and neurophysiological processes, and pave the way for precision assessment and treatment of the olfactory dysfunction.

Abstract
Approximately 5% of the general population is affected by functional anosmia with approximately additional 15% exhibiting decreased olfactory function. Many of these individuals ask for help. Because the subjective rating of olfactory function is biased, assessment of olfactory function is important. Olfactory measurements are needed for patient counseling and the tracking of changes in the sense of smell over time. The present review provides an overview of frequently used psychophysical tests for olfactory function, discusses differences between threshold and suprathreshold aspects of olfactory function, and gives examples on how to apply psychophysical tests.

Abstract
Age-related olfactory dysfunction, or presbyosmia, is a common sensory impairment in aging adults. People in this demographic group with comorbid conditions or exposure to viral, traumatic, or environmental insults remain at the greatest risk for impairment. Several methods for assessing olfaction exist, but they are only available in special settings and require consideration of age, sex, ancestry, and cognition. Perhaps most importantly, olfactory dysfunction has been suggested as an early sign of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease and therefore may serve as a tool in the diagnosis and prognosis of these neurodegenerative conditions. Outside of this context, olfactory loss also impacts nutrition, safety, and social relationships, and even predicts mortality itself. This review covers the detection and manifestations of olfactory decline in aging individuals and the myriad ways in which olfactory impairment is connected to their health and well-being.
