Role of environmental factors and microorganisms in determining the fate of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the marine environment

Combined influence of the nanoplastics and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons exposure on microbial community in seawater environment

Nanoplastics (NPs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are recognized as persistent organic pollutant (POPs) with demonstrated physiological toxicity. When present in aquatic environments, the two pollutants could combine with each other, resulting in cumulative toxicity to organisms. However, the combined impact of NPs and PAHs on microorganisms in seawater is not well understood. In this study, we conducted an exposure experiment to investigate the individual and synergistic effects of NPs and PAHs on the composition, biodiversity, co-occurrence networks of microbial communities in seawater. Exposure of individuals to PAHs led to a reduction in microbial community richness, but an increase in the relative abundance of species linked to PAHs degradation. These PAHs-degradation bacteria acting as keystone species, maintained a microbial network complexity similar to that of the control treatment. Exposure to individual NPs resulted in a reduction in the complexity of microbial networks. Furthermore, when PAHs and NPs were simultaneously present, the toxic effect of NPs hindered the presence of keystone species involved in PAHs degradation, subsequently limiting the degradation of PAHs by marine microorganisms, resulting in a decrease in community diversity and symbiotic network complexity. This situation potentially poses a heightened threat to the ecological stability of marine ecosystems. Our work strengthened the understanding of the combined impact of NPs and PAHs on microorganisms in seawater.

Petroleum hydrocarbons and colored dissolved organic matter shape marine oil-degrading microbiota in different patterns

Both petroleum hydrocarbons (PHCs) from oil pollution and colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) have great influences on the marine microbial community as carbon source factors. However, their combined effects and the specific influence patterns have been kept unclear. This study selected the northeastern South China Sea (NSCS), a typical oil contaminated area, and investigated the characteristics of oil-degrading microbiota in the seawaters by high-throughput sequencing and the relationships with PHCs and CDOM as well as other environmental factors. The results showed the oil pollution had induced the enrichment of oil-degrading bacteria and oil-degrading functional genes, resulting in the core function of oil-degrading microbiota for shaping the microbial community. The Mantel test indicated carbon source factors played the dominant role in shaping the oil-degrading microbiota, compared with geographical distance and other non‑carbon source factors. The influence patterns and strength of PHCs and CDOM on oil-degrading microbiota were further comprehensively analyzed. PHCs played a driving role in the differentiation of oil-degrading microbiota, while CDOM played a stabilizing role for the community similarity. The constructed structural equation model confirmed their distinct influence patterns and also explored the mediating effects of bulk organic carbon. This work not only revealed the important impact of oil pollution on marine microbial communities, but also made people realize the self-regulation ability of the marine environment through the endogenous organic matter.

Seasonal dynamics of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in microplankton from Kaohsiung Harbor (Taiwan Strait, northeastern South China Sea)

The impact of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) on the marine food web is crucially understudied in the primary trophic system. We evaluated the seasonal dynamics of PAHs in microplankton in a polluted environment (Taiwan), northeastern South China Sea. Replicate size-fractionated microplankton (55-1000 μm) were freeze-dried, and PAHs were extracted with a 1:1 v/v ratio of acetone: n-hexane, then analyzed using GC-MS. Total PAHs ranged between 68 and 2548 ng/g dw in microplankton, greatest during spring (130-2548 ng/g), followed by autumn (135-772 ng/g) and summer (44-423 ng/g). Spatial distribution varied through seasons but was higher in the southern part (S6 > S4 > S5 > S2 > S3 > S1 > S7), dominated by higher-ring PAHs from mixed pyrogenic and petrogenic sources. PAHs are significantly correlated with environmental factors, especially in colder seasons and lower salinity areas. Suspended matter and plankton influenced PAH transport and partitioning seasonally. Plankton's PAHs seasonal changes and environmental influences are revealed in an anthropic environment.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in coral reefs from Southwestern Atlantic: A seascape approach using tissue and skeleton of the coral Montastraea cavernosa (Cnidaria; Scleractinia)

Coastal marine ecosystems, such as coral reefs, are severely threatened by climate changes, overexploitation, and marine pollution. Particularly, environmental pollution caused by petroleum-derived substances is poorly studied in coral reefs in tropical developing countries, with a total absence of data about these contaminants in some regions. In this work, we determined the levels of conventional and unconventional PAHs in the tissue and skeleton of the coral Montastraea cavernosa in a seascape scale of the Southwest Atlantic. We sampled in 12 coral reefs adjacent to the coast along approximately 200 km. We found 14 PAHs, 2 Oxy-PAHs, and 15 Nitro-PAHs in the samples, and among them, benzo[a]pyrene, chrysene, benzo[a]anthracene, benzo[k]fluoranthene, indeno[1,2,3-c,d]pyrene and dibenz[a,h]anthracene, which are mutagenic, teratogenic and carcinogenic substances. Skeletons presented predominantly lower quantities of ∑PAHs than the respective tissue, except for the skeletons from one reef severely impacted by oil spills. The ∑PAHs levels were lower in a bay near an urbanized region than in open sea reefs. Diagnostic ratios indicate mixogenic sources, with the predominance of petrogenic origin. Our study provides the first occurrence of PAHs, Nitro-PAHs, and Oxy-PAHs distribution in corals from the Southwest Atlantic Ocean, and we expect that these data will help to evaluate any future impacts and management of this ecosystem.

Independent and joint associations between urinary polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon metabolites and cognitive function in older adults in the United States

Background

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), as organic pollutants widely present in daily environments, have been shown by existing epidemiological studies to be significantly associated with deficits in learning and memory functions in children and adults. However, the association between exposure to PAHs and cognitive function in older adults remains unclear. Additionally, existing related studies have only assessed the association between individual PAH exposures and cognitive assessments, overlooking the risks posed by mixed exposures. This study aims to use three statistical models to investigate the individual and overall effects of mixed PAH exposures on the cognition of older adults in the United States.

Methods

The study cohort was obtained from the NHANES database, which included individuals aged 60 and older from 2011 to 2014. Weighted generalized linear models (GLM), weighted quantile sum (WQS) models, and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) models were utilized to evaluate the connections between urinary PAH metabolites and the standardized Z-scores of four cognitive tests: Immediate Recall Test (IRT), Delayed Recall Test (DRT), Animal Fluency Test (AFT), and Digit Symbol Substitution Test (DSST).

Results

Our analysis involved 899 individuals aged 60 and above. In the fully adjusted GLM, 2-hydroxynaphthalene (2-OHNa), 3-hydroxyfluorene (3-OHFlu), and 2-hydroxyfluorene (2-OHFlu) demonstrated negative associations with DSST Z-scores. In the WQS model, six urinary PAH metabolites were negatively linked to AFT Z-scores (β (95% confidence intervals [CI]): -0.120 (-0.208, -0.033), p = 0.007) and DSST Z-scores (β (95% CI): -0.182 (-0.262, -0.103), p < 0.001). In both assessments, 2-OHNa exerted the greatest influence among the urinary PAH metabolites. In the BKMR model, there was an overall negative correlation between urinary PAH metabolites and AFT and DSST Z-scores when the concentration was within the 25th to 75th percentile, where 2-OHNa dominated the main effect of the mixture. The WQS and BKMR models were adjusted for all covariates.

Conclusion

Increased concentrations of urinary PAH metabolites are associated with cognitive decline in older adults, mainly on language ability, executive function, sustained attention, working memory, and information processing speed, with 2-OHNa playing a major effect.

Air-sea exchange of PAHs in the Taiwan Strait: Seasonal dynamics and regulation mechanisms revealed by machine learning approach

In this study, to understand the seasonal dynamics of air-sea exchange and its regulation mechanisms, we investigated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) at the air-sea interface in the western Taiwan Strait in combination with measurements and machine learning (ML) predictions. For 3-ring PAHs and most of 4- to 6-ring, volatilization and deposition fluxes were observed, respectively. Seasonal variations in air-sea exchange flux suggest the influence of monsoon transitions. Results of interpretable ML approach (XGBoost) indicated that volatilization of 3-ring PAHs was significantly controlled by dissolved PAH concentrations (contributed 24.0 %), and the gaseous deposition of 4- to 6-ring PAHs was related to more contaminated air masses originating from North China during the northeast monsoon. Henry's law constant emerged as a secondary factor, influencing the intensity of air-sea exchange, particularly for low molecular weight PAHs. Among environmental parameters, notably high wind speed emerges as the primary factor and biological pump's depletion of PAHs in surface seawater amplifies the gaseous deposition process. The distinct dynamics of exchanges at the air-water interface for PAHs in the western TWS can be attributed to variations in primary emission intensities, biological activity, and the inconsistent pathways of long-range atmospheric transport, particularly within the context of the monsoon transition.

Biological machinery for the production of biosurfactant and their potential applications

The growing biotechnology industry has focused a lot of attention on biosurfactants because of several advantages over synthetic surfactants. These benefits include worldwide public health, environmental sustainability, and the increasing demand from sectors for environmentally friendly products. Replacement with biosurfactants can reduce upto 8% lifetime CO2 emissions avoiding about 1.5 million tons of greenhouse gas released into the atmosphere. Therefore, the demand for biosurfactants has risen sharply occupying about 10% (∼10 million tons/year) of the world production of surfactants. Biosurfactants' distinct amphipathic structure, which is made up of both hydrophilic and hydrophobic components, enables these molecules to perform essential functions in emulsification, foam formation, detergency, and oil dispersion-all of which are highly valued characteristic in a variety of sectors. Today, a variety of biosurfactants are manufactured on a commercial scale for use in the food, petroleum, and agricultural industries, as well as the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries. We provide a thorough analysis of the body of knowledge on microbial biosurfactants that has been gained over time in this research. We also discuss the benefits and obstacles that need to be overcome for the effective development and use of biosurfactants, as well as their present and future industrial uses.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon: underpinning the contribution of specialist microbial species to contaminant mitigation in the soil

The persistence of PAHs poses a significant challenge for conventional remediation approaches, necessitating the exploration of alternative, sustainable strategies for their mitigation. This review underscores the vital role of specialized microbial species (nitrogen-fixing, phosphate-solubilizing, and biosurfactant-producing bacteria) in tackling the environmental impact of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). These resistant compounds demand innovative remediation strategies. The study explores microbial metabolic capabilities for converting complex PAHs into less harmful byproducts, ensuring sustainable mitigation. Synthesizing literature from 2016 to 2023, it covers PAH characteristics, sources, and associated risks. Degradation mechanisms by bacteria and fungi, key species, and enzymatic processes are examined. Nitrogen-fixing and phosphate-solubilizing bacteria contributions in symbiotic relationships with plants are highlighted. Biosurfactant-producing bacteria enhance PAH solubility, expanding microbial accessibility for degradation. Cutting-edge trends in omics technologies, synthetic biology, genetic engineering, and nano-remediation offer promising avenues. Recommendations emphasize genetic regulation, field-scale studies, sustainability assessments, interdisciplinary collaboration, and knowledge dissemination. These insights pave the way for innovative, sustainable PAH-contaminated environment restoration.

From Antagonism to Enhancement: Triton X-100 Surfactant Affects Phenanthrene Interfacial Biodegradation by Mycobacteria through a Shift in Uptake Mechanisms

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), as persistent environmental pollutants, often reside in nonaqueous-phase liquids (NAPLs). Mycobacterium sp. WY10, boasting highly hydrophobic surfaces, can adsorb to the oil-water interface, stabilizing the Pickering emulsion and directly accessing PAHs for biodegradation. We investigated the impact of Triton X-100 (TX100) on this interfacial uptake of phenanthrene (PHE) by Mycobacteria, using n-tetradecane (TET) and bis-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) as NAPLs. Interfacial tension, phase behavior, and emulsion stability studies, alongside confocal laser scanning microscopy and electron microscope observations, unveiled the intricate interplay. In surfactant-free systems, Mycobacteria formed stable W/O Pickering emulsions, directly degrading PHE within the NAPLs because of their intimate contact. Introducing low-dose TX100 disrupted this relationship. Preferentially binding to the cells, the surfactant drastically increased the cell hydrophobicity, triggering desorption from the interface and phase separation. Consequently, PAH degradation plummeted due to hindered NAPL access. Higher TX100 concentrations flipped the script, creating surfactant-stabilized O/W emulsions devoid of interfacial cells. Surprisingly, PAH degradation remained efficient. This paradox can be attributed to NAPL emulsification, driven by the surfactant, which enhanced mass transfer and brought the substrate closer to the cells, despite their absence at the interface. This study sheds light on the complex effect of surfactants on Mycobacteria and PAH uptake, revealing an antagonistic effect at low concentrations that ultimately leads to enhanced degradation through emulsification at higher doses. These findings offer valuable insights into optimizing bioremediation strategies in PAH-contaminated environments.

Genetic redundancy in the naphthalene-degradation pathway of Cycloclasticus pugetii strain PS-1 enables response to varying substrate concentrations

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) contamination in marine environments range from low-diffusive inputs to high loads. The influence of PAH concentration on the expression of functional genes [e.g. those encoding ring-hydroxylating dioxygenases (RHDs)] has been overlooked in PAH biodegradation studies. However, understanding marker-gene expression under different PAH loads can help to monitor and predict bioremediation efficiency. Here, we followed the expression (via RNA sequencing) of Cycloclasticus pugetii strain PS-1 in cell suspension experiments under different naphthalene (100 and 30 mg L-1) concentrations. We identified genes encoding previously uncharacterized RHD subunits, termed rhdPS1α and rhdPS1β, that were highly transcribed in response to naphthalene-degradation activity. Additionally, we identified six RHD subunit-encoding genes that responded to naphthalene exposure. By contrast, four RHD subunit genes were PAH-independently expressed and three other RHD subunit genes responded to naphthalene starvation. Cycloclasticus spp. could, therefore, use genetic redundancy in key PAH-degradation genes to react to varying PAH loads. This genetic redundancy may restrict the monitoring of environmental hydrocarbon-degradation activity using single-gene expression. For Cycloclasticus pugetii strain PS-1, however, the newly identified rhdPS1α and rhdPS1β genes might be potential target genes to monitor its environmental naphthalene-degradation activity.

Cycloalkane degradation by an uncultivated novel genus of Gammaproteobacteria derived from China's marginal seas

The consumption of cycloalkanes is prevalent in low-temperature marine environments, likely influenced by psychrophilic microorganisms. Despite their significance, the primary active species responsible for marine cycloalkane degradation remain largely unidentified due to cultivation challenges. In this study, we provide compelling evidence indicating that the uncultured genus C1-B045 of Gammaproteobacteria is a pivotal participant in cycloalkane decomposition within China's marginal seas. Notably, the relative abundance of C1-B045 surged from 15.9% in the methylcyclohexane (MCH)-consuming starter culture to as high as 97.5% in MCH-utilizing extinction cultures following successive dilution-to-extinction and incubation cycles. We used stable isotope probing, Raman-activated gravity-driven encapsulation, and 16 S rRNA gene sequencing to link cycloalkane-metabolizing phenotype to genotype at the single-cell level. By annotating key enzymes (e.g., alkane monooxygenase, cyclohexanone monooxygenase, and 6-hexanolactone hydrolase) involved in MCH metabolism within C1-B045's representative metagenome-assembled genome, we developed a putative MCH degradation pathway.

Finding microbial composition and biological processes as predictive signature to access the ongoing status of mangrove preservation

Mangroves are complex land-sea transition ecosystems whose microbiota are essential for their nutrient recycling and conservation. Brazil is the third-largest estuarine area in the world and "Baía de Todos os Santos" (BTS) is one of the largest bays of the country, with wide anthropogenic exploration. Using a metagenomic approach, we investigated composition and functional adaptability as signatures of the microbiome of pristine and anthropized areas of BTS, including those under petroleum refinery influence. The taxonomic analysis showed dominance of sulfate-reducing Desulfobacteraceae, Rhodobacteraceae, and Flavobacteriaceae. Taxa were significantly diverse between pristine and disturbed areas. Disturbed mangroves showed a notary increase in abundance of halophilic, sulfur-related, and hydrocarbon-degrading genera and a decrease in diatoms compared to pristine area. The metabolic profile of BTS mangroves was correlated with the differentially abundant microbiota. Two ecological scenarios were observed: one marked by functions of central metabolism associated with biomass degradation and another by mechanisms of microbial adaptability to pollution conditions and environmental degradation. Part of the microbiome was distinct and not abundant in Brazilian estuarine soils. The microbiome signature observed in each BTS mangrove reflects how human actions impact the diversity of these ecosystems and also emphasize their role in attempting to restore disturbed mangroves. The microbiome may act as a potential biological indicator of the preservation status of these soils, despite the limitation of soil property conditions. Additionally, our data pointed to metagenomics as an additional tool for environmental assessment and reinforced the need for protective measures for the mangroves under study.

Autochthonous psychrophilic hydrocarbonoclastic bacteria and its ecological function in contaminated cold environments

Petroleum hydrocarbon (PH) pollution has mostly been caused by oil exploration, extraction, and transportation activities in colder regions, particularly in the Arctic and Antarctic regions, where it serves as a primary source of energy. Due to the resilience feature of nature, such polluted environments become the realized ecological niches for a wide community of psychrophilic hydrocarbonoclastic bacteria (PHcB). In contrast, to other psychrophilic species, PHcB is extremely cold-adapted and has unique characteristics that allow them to thrive in greater parts of the cold environment burdened with PHs. The stated group of bacteria in its ecological niche aids in the breakdown of litter, turnover of nutrients, cycling of carbon and nutrients, and bioremediation. Although such bacteria are the pioneers of harsh colder environments, their growth and distribution remain under the influence of various biotic and abiotic factors of the environment. The review discusses the prevalence of PHcB community in colder habitats, the metabolic processes involved in the biodegradation of PH, and the influence of biotic and abiotic stress factors. The existing understanding of the PH metabolism by PHcB offers confirmation of excellent enzymatic proficiency with high cold stability. The discovery of more flexible PH degrading strategies used by PHcB in colder environments could have a significant beneficial outcome on existing bioremediation technologies. Still, PHcB is least explored for other industrial and biotechnological applications as compared to non-PHcB psychrophiles. The present review highlights the pros and cons of the existing bioremediation technologies as well as the potential of different bioaugmentation processes for the effective removal of PH from the contaminated cold environment. Such research will not only serve to investigate the effects of pollution on the basic functional relationships that form the cold ecosystem but also to assess the efficacy of various remediation solutions for diverse settings and climatic conditions.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in 55-120 μm phytoplankton

A baseline study was undertaken on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in phytoplankton. Plankton samples from six stations (duplicates) in Kaohsiung Harbor (KH), Taiwan along with a phytoplankton control sample afar from the harbor, were collected. We applied size-fractionation to isolate phytoplankton (55-120 μm), followed by sedimentation and centrifugation to remove abiogenic particulates. The phytoplankton was freeze-dried, extracted with acetone: n-hexane (1:1, v/v), and analyzed using GC-MS. ΣPAHs in phytoplankton ranged between 5204 and 28,903 ng/g dry weight (mean: 12,150 ng/g). The ΣPAHs in KH were >7 times than the control site (C1: 3972 ng/g). Cluster analysis showed spatial gradients (northern < southern KH). Accumulated PAHs in phytoplankton were from petrogenic (fishing ports and ships) and pyrogenic (river outflows), dominated by lower-ring PAHs, likely due to their higher bioavailability in the dissolved phase. We present a practical phytoplankton isolation technique for more accurate phytoplankton PAH concentrations with insights into their distribution and sources.

Spatial distribution and partition of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the water and sediment of the southern Bohai Sea: Yellow River and PAH property influences

The marginal Bohai Sea, connected to the northwestern Pacific Ocean, is threatened by human activity. The Yellow River, the second largest river in China, drains large amounts of water, silts, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) into the southern Bohai Sea; however, to what extent the Yellow River inputs influence the spatial distributions and partitions of PAHs in the southern Bohai Sea is not well known. Therefore, this study collected surface water, bottom water, and sediment samples from the southern Bohai Sea and analyzed them to examine the spatial distributions and partitions of 15 priority PAHs. The results showed that PAH concentrations ranged from 26.9 to 50.1 ng L-1 in surface water, 18.8 to 44.1 ng L-1 in bottom water, and 7.4 to 143.9 ng g-1 in sediment, with higher proportions of four-, five-, and six-ring PAHs in sediment than in water. PAH inputs from the Yellow River and sea coastal currents determined the spatial distribution of PAH concentrations in water and sediment, with an overall decrease from the estuary to the southeast. However, the solid dilution effect of input silts from the Yellow River and the liquid dilution effect of water from the Yellow River and Yellow Sea led to lower PAH concentrations in the water and sediment of the southern Bohai Sea than those in other areas of the Bohai Sea. PAH exchange between the atmosphere and seawater led to significantly higher individual PAH concentrations (except for acenaphthylene) in the surface water than in the bottom water, with ratios significantly related to the PAH n-octanol-water partition coefficient, organic carbon-water partition coefficient, and Henry's law constants. These parameters also determined PAH partitioning between the bottom water and sediment. Individual and total PAH concentrations in the sediment were significantly correlated with organic matter, clay, and silt contents. Therefore, the partitions and spatial distributions of PAHs in the southern Bohai Sea comprehensively depend on PAH properties, PAH inputs from the Yellow River and the atmosphere, sea currents, and seawater and sediment properties. The ecological risks posed by individual PAHs in both water and sediment were negligible or acceptable.

Changes in hydrocarbons and elemental distribution in peloids during maturation processes (Sečovlje Salina Nature Park Slovenia)

In Sečovlje Salina Nature Park, the therapeutic mud matured in the natural sedimentary environmental site. This work aimed to determine the influence of the peloid maturation process on the hydrocarbon and elemental distributions, as well as changes in morphology. For this purpose, the sample before and after maturation was examined using various methods. n-Alkanes were the most abundant among saturated hydrocarbons in both immature and mature peloid samples. The results showed that the maturation mainly influenced the change in distribution and concentration (from 378 to 1958 ppm) of n-alkanes. The organic matter (OM) of the immature peloid sample was characterized by a slight prevalence of long-chain and odd carbon-numbered n-alkanes, maximizing at n-C27. However, mature peloid's OM showed a similar share of short-, mid- and long-chain n-alkanes with a slight dominance of short-chain members, maximizing at n-C16. The origin of short-chain and even carbon-numbered n-alkanes was attributed to microbial precursors (e.g., Leptolyngbyaceae). Hopanes were considerably more dominant compared to steranes in both peloids. The hopane series of immature peloid was characterized by the dominance of 22,29,30-trinor-hop-5(6)-ene (C27 hopene), as well as the presence of C30-hop-22(29)-ene (diploptene), which are widespread in cyanobacterial species. The aromatic fraction of immature peloid pointed to the predominance of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). As peloid aging progressed, the sample was richer in methyl-branched alkanes, carboxylic acids, their methyl esters, and thermodynamically more stable hopanes and steranes. The presence of elements with toxicological relevance during maturation was reduced below the limits prescribed in most of the directives for cosmetic products. It specifically refers to: As, Ni and Se. A higher concentration of total sulfur in the mature peloid can be related to gypsum precipitation in the summer and/or more intensive microbial activity.

Degradation of crude oil-associated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons by marine-derived fungi

One of the major environmental concerns today is hydrocarbon contamination resulting from the activities related to the petrochemical industry. Crude oil is a complex mixture of hydrocarbons like alkanes, naphthene and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). PAHs are known to be highly toxic to humans and animals due to their carcinogenic and mutagenic effects. PAHs are environmentally recalcitrant due to their hydrophobicity which makes them difficult to degrade, thus making them persistent environmental contaminants. The mechanical and chemical methods in practice currently to remove hydrocarbon contaminants have limited effectiveness and are expensive. Bioremediation is a cost-effective technology for treating hydrocarbon-contaminated sites as it results in the complete mineralisation of the pollutant. This study demonstrates the degradation of crude oil and associated PAHs using ten fungal cultures isolated from the aquatic environment. The current study reported a 98.6% and 92.9% reduction in total PAHs in crude oil by Fusarium species, i.e. isolate NIOSN-T4 and NIOSN-T5, respectively. The fungal isolate, NIOSN-T4, identified as Fusarium equiseti, showed maximum PAH degradation efficiency of LMW PAHs 97.8%. NIOSN-M126, identified as Penicillium citrinum, exhibited a 100% removal of HMW PAHs. Microorganisms possess an untapped potential for various applications in biotechnology, and the current study demonstrated the potential of marine fungi for use in the bioremediation of xenobiotic hydrocarbons in the environment.

Unlocking secrets of microbial ecotoxicology: recent achievements and future challenges

Environmental pollution is one of the main challenges faced by humanity. By their ubiquity and vast range of metabolic capabilities, microorganisms are affected by pollution with consequences on their host organisms and on the functioning of their environment. They also play key roles in the fate of pollutants through the degradation, transformation, and transfer of organic or inorganic compounds. Thus, they are crucial for the development of nature-based solutions to reduce pollution and of bio-based solutions for environmental risk assessment of chemicals. At the intersection between microbial ecology, toxicology, and biogeochemistry, microbial ecotoxicology is a fast-expanding research area aiming to decipher the interactions between pollutants and microorganisms. This perspective paper gives an overview of the main research challenges identified by the Ecotoxicomic network within the emerging One Health framework and in the light of ongoing interest in biological approaches to environmental remediation and of the current state of the art in microbial ecology. We highlight prevailing knowledge gaps and pitfalls in exploring complex interactions among microorganisms and their environment in the context of chemical pollution and pinpoint areas of research where future efforts are needed.

Hydrocarbons in size-fractionated plankton of the Mediterranean Sea (MERITE-HIPPOCAMPE campaign)

Aliphatic and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (AHs and PAHs, respectively) were analyzed in the dissolved fraction (<0.7 μm) of surface water and in various particulate/planktonic size fractions (0.7-60, 60-200, 200-500 and 500-1000 μm) collected at the deep chlorophyll maximum, along a North-South transect in the Mediterranean Sea in spring 2019 (MERITE-HIPPOCAMPE campaign). Suspended particulate matter, biomass, total chlorophyll a, particulate organic carbon, C and N isotopic ratios, and lipid biomarkers were also determined to help characterizing the size-fractionated plankton and highlight the potential link with the content in AHs and PAHs in these size fractions. Ʃ28AH concentrations ranged 18-489 ng L-1 for water, 3.9-72 μg g-1 dry weight (dw) for the size fraction 0.7-60 μm, and 3.4-55 μg g-1 dw for the fractions 60-200, 200-500 and 500-1000 μm. AH molecular profiles revealed that they were mainly of biogenic origin. Ʃ14PAH concentrations were 0.9-16 ng L-1 for water, and Ʃ27PAH concentrations were 53-220 ng g-1 dw for the fraction 0.7-60 μm and 35-255 ng g-1 dw for the three higher fractions, phenanthrene being the most abundant compound in planktonic compartment. Two processes were evidenced concerning the PAH patterns, the bioreduction, i.e., the decrease in concentrations from the small size fractions (0.7-60 and 60-200 μm) to the higher ones (200-500 μm and 500-1000 μm), and the biodilution, i.e., the decrease in concentrations in plankton at higher suspended matter or biomass, especially for the 0.7-60 and 60-200-μm size fractions. We estimated the biological pump fluxes of Ʃ27PAHs below 100-m depth in the Western Mediterranean Sea at 15 ± 10 ng m-2 day-1, which is comparable to those previously reported in the South Pacific and Indian Ocean.

Hydrocarbons in the atmospheric gas phase of a coastal city in Tunisia: Levels, gas-particle partitioning, and health risk assessment

Many studies have focused on aliphatic hydrocarbons and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (AHs and PAHs) in different environmental compartments, especially atmospheric particles (aerosols), due to their adverse effects on the environment and human health. However, much less information is currently available on the content of AHs and PAHs in the atmospheric gas phase, which is a major reservoir of volatile and photoreactive compounds. Here, for the first time, we assessed the levels, gas-particle partitioning, human health risks and seasonal variations of AHs and PAHs in the atmospheric gas-phase of Bizerte city (Tunisia, North Africa) over a one-year period (March 2015-January 2016). Σ₃₄PAH concentration in the gas phase over the period ranged from 6.7 to 90.6 ng m^-3 and on average was 2.5 times higher in the cold season than in the warm season. Σ₂₈AH concentration in the gas phase over the period ranged from 14.0 to 35.9 ng m^-3, with no clear seasonal variations. In the gas phase, hydrocarbons were dominated by low-molecular-weight (LMW) compounds, i.e. 3- and 4-ring for PAHs and < n-C₂₄ for AHs. Gas-phase concentrations of PAHs and AHs accounted for up to 80 % of the total (gas + particle phases) atmospheric concentrations of PAHs and AHs. Further analysis of gas-particle partitioning showed that LMW hydrocarbons preferential accumulated in the gas phase, and that gas-particle partitioning was not in equilibrium but dominated by absorption processes into the aerosol organic matter. Benzo[a]pyrene toxic equivalency quotient (BaP-TEQ) in the gas phase represented on average 37 % of the total atmospheric BaP-TEQ concentration, which was always higher in the cold season. Atmospheric gas is a significant factor in the risks of cancer associated with inhalation of ambient air. The Monte Carlo simulation-based exposure assessment model predicted that outdoor air exposure to PAHs does not pose a cancer risk to infants, but the children, adolescent, and adult populations may face a lower cancer risk during the warm season and a higher risk in the cold season.

Neuroprotective and nephroprotective effects of Ircinia sponge in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) induced toxicity in animal model: a pharmacological and computational approach

The present study investigated the neuroprotective and nephroprotective effects of the sponge Ircinia sp. ethyl acetate extract (ISPE) against persistent aromatic pollutants in vitro and in vivo. Different exponential experimental assays were applied to this study. An in vitro study to investigate the potential therapeutic effect of ISPE using antioxidants (for example, ABTS and DPPH) and anti-Alzheimer assays (inhibition of acetylcholinesterase); the in-vivo study was designed to evaluate the protective effect of ISPE as neuroprotective and nephroprotective against the destructive effect of PAH. Several assays included oxidative assays (LPO), antioxidant biomarkers (GSH, GST), and inflammatory and neurodegenerative biomarkers (PTK,SAA). Additionally, the results were confirmed using histopathological examination. The in silico screening study improved the in vitro and in vivo findings through interaction between the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR) and the polyphenolic content of ISPE extract, which was determined using LCMSM. The results and discussion showed that ISPE exhibited a promising antioxidant and anti-acetylcholinesterase activity as evidenced by IC₅₀ values of 49.74, 28.25, and 0.18 µg/mL in DPPH, ABTS, and acetylcholinesterase inhibition assays, respectively. In vivo, the study showed that animals receiving ISPE before poly aromatic hydrocarbons administration PAHs (Prot, ISPE) showed significant amelioration in kidney functions manifested by the reduction of serum urea, uric acid, and creatinine by 40.6%, 66.4%, and 134.8%, respectively, concerning PAH-injected mice (HAA). Prot, ISPE revealed a decline in malondialdehyde (MDA) and total proteins (TP) in kidney and brain tissues by 73.63% and 50.21%, respectively, for MDA and 59.82% and 80.41%, respectively, for TP with respect to HAA. Prot, ISPE showed significant elevation in reduced glutathione (GSH) and glutathione transferase (GST) in kidney and brain tissues and reduction in the inflammatory and pre-cancerous biomarkers, namely, serum protein tyrosine kinases (PTKs) and serum amyloid A (SAA). These findings were further supported by histopathological examination of kidney and brain tissues, which revealed normal structure approaching normal control. Metabolic profiling of ISPE using LC-MS-MS showed the presence of fourteen polyphenolic compounds belonging mainly to phenolic acids and flavonoids. In silico study revealed that all the tested compounds exerted certain binding with the aryl hydrocarbon receptor, where rutin showed the best fitting (ΔG =  - 7.6 kcal/mol^-1) with considerable pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties revealed from in silico ADME (Absorption, Distribution, Metabolism, and Excretion) study. Hence, it can be concluded that the Ircinia sponge showed a promising protective effect versus kidney and brain toxicity triggered by PAHs.

Mechanistic insights into phenanthrene-triggered oxidative stress-associated neurotoxicity, genotoxicity, and behavioral disturbances toward the brandling worm (Eisenia fetida) brain: The need for an ecotoxicological evaluation

In this study, earthworm (Eisenia fetida) brain was chosen as targeted receptors to probe the mechanisms of oxidative stress-related neurotoxicity, genotoxicity, and behavioral disturbances triggered by PHE. Results showed that PHE stress can initiate significant amounts of ROS, thus triggering oxidative stress in E. fetida brain. These effects were accompanied by a significant increase of damage to macromolecules DNA and lipids, resulting in severe oxidative effects. PHE exposure can induce AChE inhibition by ROS-induced injury and the accumulation of excess ACh at the nicotinic post-synaptic membrane, thus inducing aggravated neurological dysfunction and neurotoxicity of E. fetida through an oxidative stress pathway. Moreover, the burrowing behavior of earthworms was disturbed by oxidative stress-induced neurotoxicity after exposure to PHE. Furthermore, the abnormal mRNA expression profiles of oxidative stress- and neurotoxicity-related genes in worm brain were induced by PHE stress. The IBR results suggested that E. fetida brain was suffered more serious damage caused by PHE under higher doses and long-term exposure. Taken together, PHE exposure can trigger oxidative stress-mediated neurotoxicity and genotoxicity in worm brain and behavioral disorder through ROS-induced damage. This study is of great significance to evaluate the harmful effects of PHE and its mechanisms on soil ecological health.

Microbial machinery dealing diverse aromatic compounds: Decoded from pelagic sediment ecogenomics in the gulfs of Kathiawar Peninsula and Arabian Sea

Aromatic hydrocarbons are persistent pollutants in aquatic systems as endocrine disruptors, significantly impacting natural ecosystems and human health. Microbes perform as natural bioremediators to remove and regulate aromatic hydrocarbons in the marine ecosystem. The present study focuses upon the comparative diversity and abundance of various hydrocarbon-degrading enzymes and their pathways from deep sediments along the Gulf of Kathiawar Peninsula and Arabian Sea, India. The elucidation of large number of degradation pathways in the study area under the presence of a wide range of pollutants whose fate needs to be addressed. Sediment core samples were collected, and the whole microbiome was sequenced. Analysis of the predicted ORFs (open reading frames) against the AromaDeg database revealed 2946 aromatic hydrocarbon-degrading enzyme sequences. Statistical analysis portrayed that the Gulfs were more diverse in degradation pathways compared to the open sea, with the Gulf of Kutch being more prosperous and more diverse than the Gulf of Cambay. The vast majority of the annotated ORFs belonged to groups of dioxygenases that included catechol, gentisate, and benzene dioxygenases, along with Rieske (2Fe-2S) and vicinal oxygen chelate (VOC) family proteins. From the sampling sites, only 960 of the total predicted genes were given taxonomic annotations, which mention the presence of many under-explored marine microorganism-derived hydrocarbon degrading genes and pathways. Through the present study, we tried to unveil the array of catabolic pathways of aromatic hydrocarbon degradation and genes from a marine ecosystem that upholds economic and ecological significance in India. Thus, this study provides vast opportunities and strategies for microbial resource recovery in marine ecosystems, which can be investigated to explore aromatic hydrocarbon degradation and their potential mechanisms under various oxic or anoxic environments. Future studies should focus on aromatic hydrocarbon degradation by considering degradation pathways, biochemical analysis, enzymatic, metabolic, and genetic systems, and regulations.

Association of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons exposure with child neurodevelopment and adult emotional disorders: A meta-analysis study

BACKGROUND

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have been demonstrated to be neurotoxic.

OBJECTIVES

To summarize the existing epidemiological studies to quantify the effects of PAHs exposure on child neurodevelopment and adult emotional disorders.

DATA SOURCES AND STUDY ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

We conducted a systematic literature search for studies of child neurodevelopment and adult emotional disorders published in English up to April 2022 in the databases of PubMed, Web of Science and Embase using combinations of MeSH terms and Entry terms, and the articles were filtered out according to data availability. A variety of common PAHs were included in the meta-analysis: 1-hydroxynaphthalene, 2-hydroxynaphthalene, 2-hydroxyfluorene, 3-hydroxyfluorene, 9-hydroxyfluorene, 1-hydroxyphenanthrene, 2-hydroxyphenanthrene, 3-hydroxyphenanthrene, 4-hydroxyphenanthrene, 9-hydroxyphenanthrene, 1-hydroxypyrene and benzoapyrene (BaP).

STUDY EVALUATION AND SYNTHESIS METHODS

We extracted the content of each article, summarized its design characteristics and performed quality evaluation. We combined the odds ratio (OR) available in various studies to obtain the risk of PAHs exposure and adaptive, language, social, attention, motor skills and child depression/anxiety in children ≤ 15 years old. In addition, we also conducted a meta-analysis on the relationship between PAHs exposure and the risk of depression in adults.

RESULTS

We included a total of 16 epidemiological studies (4 cross-sectional studies and 12 cohort studies). The sample size of all included studies ranged from 110 to 9625. Prenatal exposure to PAHs was found to be associated with increased risk of social behavior (OR = 1.60, 95% CI: 1.00-2.54), attention (OR = 2.99, 95% CI: 1.48-6.02), motor skill problems (OR = 1.91, 95% CI: 1.27-2.86) and any adverse neurodevelopmental outcome in children (OR = 2.10, 95% CI: 1.69-2.62). In addition, we found that PAHs exposure could increase the risk of adult depression, with 2-hydroxyfluorene exposure showing the highest combined OR (OR = 1.48, 95% CI: 1.10-2.00).

CONCLUSIONS

The results suggested that PAHs exposure are associated with increased risk of child neurodevelopment and adult depression. The neurotoxic effects of PAHs exposure in human being should be paid more attention. Dosage concentration and pulsing frequency affect the degradation efficiency in simulated bacterial polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon-degrading cultures

A major source of anthropogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) inputs into marine environments are diffuse emissions which result in low PAH concentrations in the ocean water, posing a potential threat for the affected ecosystems. However, the remediation of low-dosage PAH contaminations through microbial processes remains largely unknown. Here, we developed a process-based numerical model to simulate batch cultures receiving repeated low-dosage naphthalene pulses compared to the conventionally used one-time high-dosage. Pulsing frequency as well as dosage concentration had a large impact on the degradation efficiency. After 10 days, 99.7%, 97.2%, 86.6%, or 83.5% of the 145 mg L^-1 naphthalene was degraded when given as a one-time high-dosage or in 2, 5, or 10 repeated low-concentration dosages equally spaced throughout the experiment, respectively. If the simulation was altered, giving the system that received 10 pulses time to recover to 99.7%, pulsing patterns affected the degradation of naphthalene. When pulsing 10 days at once per day, naphthalene accumulated following each pulse and if the degradation was allowed to continue until the recovered state was reached, the incubation time was prolonged to 17 days with a generation time of 3.81 days. If a full recovery was conditional before the next pulse was added, the scenario elongated to 55 days and generation time increased to 14.15 days. This indicates that dissolution kinetics dominate biodegradation kinetics, and the biomass concentration of PAH-degrading bacteria alone is not a sufficient indicator for quantifying active biodegradation. Applying those findings to the environment, a one-time input of a high dosage is potentially degraded faster than repeated low-dosage PAH pollution and repeated low-dosage input could lead to PAH accumulation in vulnerable pristine environments. Further research on the overlooked field of chronic low-dosage PAH contamination is necessary.

Contamination of planktonic food webs in the Mediterranean Sea: Setting the frame for the MERITE-HIPPOCAMPE oceanographic cruise (spring 2019)

This paper looks at experiential feedback and the technical and scientific challenges tied to the MERITE-HIPPOCAMPE cruise that took place in the Mediterranean Sea in spring 2019. This cruise proposes an innovative approach to investigate the accumulation and transfer of inorganic and organic contaminants within the planktonic food webs. We present detailed information on how the cruise worked, including 1) the cruise track and sampling stations, 2) the overall strategy, based mainly on the collection of plankton, suspended particles and water at the deep chlorophyll maximum, and the separation of these particles and planktonic organisms into various size fractions, as well as the collection of atmospheric deposition, 3) the operations performed and material used at each station, and 4) the sequence of operations and main parameters analysed. The paper also provides the main environmental conditions that were prevailing during the campaign. Lastly, we present the types of articles produced based on work completed by the cruise that are part of this special issue.

Cold sediment microbial community shifts in response to crude oil water-accommodated fraction with or without dispersant: a microcosm study

In cold environments, the low temperature slows down microbial metabolisms, such as the biodegradation processes of hydrocarbons, which are often stimulated by the addition of dispersants in oil spill disasters. In this study, we investigated the effects of hydrocarbon water-accommodated fraction (WAF) prepared with and without dispersant on benthic microbial communities in a microcosm experiment in which hydrocarbon removal was observed. Both WAFs contained similar polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) content. The microcosm experiment, set up with either pristine or contaminated sediments, was conducted for 21 days at 4 °C under WAF and WAF + dispersant conditions. The behavior of bacterial communities in response to WAF and WAF + dispersant was examined at both DNA and RNA levels, revealing the effect of WAF and WAF + dispersant on the resident and active communities respectively. The contaminated sediment showed less taxa responsive to the addition of both WAF and WAF + dispersant than the pristine sediment, indicating the legacy effect by the presence hydrocarbon-degrading and dispersant-resistant taxa inhabiting the contaminated sediment.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in a Natural Heritage Estuary influenced by anthropogenic activities in the South Atlantic: Integrating multiple source apportionment approaches

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were analysed in the sediments of one of the most well-preserved estuaries in South Brazil, the Paranaguá Estuarine System (PES), using several source apportionment tools. The ∑PAH ranged from < DL to 125.6 ng g^-1 dw (dry weight) (average 29.9 ± 26.1 ng g^-1 dw), and the lowest levels detected were similar to those found in other protected areas of the world. In general, the PAH concentrations indicated excellent environmental quality for the entire estuary. Principal component analysis indicated that fine sediments and total organic carbon were the main factors controlling PAH concentrations in the PES. Multiple PAH sources were identified in the study area; biomass burning and fossil fuel combustion predominated but considerable amounts of petrogenic residues were also observed. We identified evidence of a contribution from an adjacent watershed resulting from the construction of interconnections between large rivers and from years of intense deforestation in the local Atlantic Forest.

Marine Fungi Select and Transport Aerobic and Anaerobic Bacterial Populations from Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon-Contaminated Sediments

The organization of microbial communities in marine sediment relies on complex biotic and abiotic interactions. Among them, the interaction between fungi and bacteria plays a crucial role building specific microbial assemblages, resulting in metabolic networks adapted to environmental conditions. The fungal-bacterial interaction (FBI) includes bacterial translocation via fungal mycelia, allowing bacterial dispersion, and ecological niche colonization. In order to demonstrate that the translocation of bacteria through fungal mycelia involves bacterial selection, the mycelia of two fungi isolated from marine coastal sediment, Alternaria destruens F10.81 and Fusarium pseudonygamai F5.76, showing different strategies for uptake of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH), homogenous internalization and vacuole forming respectively, were used to translocate bacteria through hydrophobic hydrocarbon contaminated sediments. A. destruens F10.81 selected four specific bacteria, while bacterial selection by F. pseudonygamai F5.76 was not evident. Among the bacteria selected by A. destruens F10.81, Spirochaeta litoralis, known as strictly anaerobic bacterium, was identified, indicating that A. destruens F10.81 selects and transports both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. Such a result is consistent with the observed formation of anoxic micro-niches in areas surrounding and affected by fungal hyphae. Our findings provide new insights on the selection and dispersion of bacterial communities by fungi, which are crucial for the organization of microbial communities and their functioning in coastal PAH-contaminated sediments. IMPORTANCE The study provides advances for understanding fungal-bacterial relationships, particularly on the selection and dispersion of bacterial communities by fungi, which are crucial for the organization of microbial communities and their functioning in coastal PAH-contaminated sediments. The transportation of bacteria via fungal hyphae (fungal highway) results in bacterial selection; in particular, fungal hyphae offer adequate conditions for the transport of both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria through hydrophobic patches for the colonization of novel niches.

Geochemical properties of blue carbon sediments through an elevation gradient: study of an anthropogenically impacted coastal lagoon

Global research is showing that coastal blue carbon ecosystems are vulnerable to climate change driven threats including accelerated sea-level rise and prolonged periods of drought. Furthermore, direct anthropogenic impacts present immediate threats through deterioration of coastal water quality, land reclamation, long-term impact to sediment biogeochemical cycling. These threats will invariably alter the future efficacy of carbon (C) sequestration processes and it is imperative that currently existing blue carbon habitats be protected. Knowledge of underlying biogeochemical, physical and hydrological interactions occurring in functioning blue carbon habitats is essential for developing strategies to mitigate threats, and promote conditions to optimise C sequestration/storage. In this current work, we investigated how sediment geochemistry (0-10 cm depth) responds to elevation, an edaphic factor driven by long-term hydrological regimes consequently exerting control over particle sedimentation rates and vegetation succession. This study was performed in an anthropogenically impacted blue carbon habitat along a coastal ecotone encompassing an elevation gradient transect from intertidal sediments (un-vegetated and covered daily by tidal water), through vegetated salt marsh sediments (periodically covered by spring tides and flooding events), on Bull Island, Dublin Bay. We determined the quantity and distributions of bulk geochemical characteristics in sediments through the elevation gradient, including total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), total metals, silt, clay, and also, 16 individual polyaromatic hydrocarbon's (PAH's) as an indication of anthropogenic input. Elevation measurements for sample sites were determined on this gradient using a LiDAR scanner accompanied by an IGI inertial measurement unit (IMU) on board a light aircraft. Considering the gradient from the Tidal mud zone (T), through the low-mid marsh (M) to the most elevated upper marsh (H), there were significant differences between all zones for many measured environmental variables. The results of significance testing using Kruskal-Wallis analysis revealed, that %C, %N, PAH (µg/g), Mn (mg/kg), TOC:NH₄ ⁺ and pH are significantly different between all zones on the elevation gradient. The highest values for all these variables exists (excluding pH which followed a reverse trend) in zone H, decreasing in zone M and lowest in the un-vegetated zone T. TC content is 16 fold higher overall in vegetated (3.43 -21.84%) than uninhabited (0.21-0.56%) sediments. TN was over 50 times higher (0.24-1.76%), more specifically increasing in % mass on approach to the upper salt marsh with distance from the tidal flats sediments zone T (0.002-0.05%). Clay and silt distributions were greatest in vegetated sediments, increasing in % content towards upper marsh zones The retention of water, metals, PAHs, mud, chloride ions, NH₄ ⁺, PO₄ ^3- and SO₄ ^2- increased with elevated C concentrations, concurrently where pH significantly decreased. Sediments were categorized with respect to PAH contamination where all SM samples were placed in the high polluted category. The results highlight the ability of Blue C sediments to immobilise increasing levels of C, N, and metals, and PAH with over time and with both lateral and vertical expansion. This study provides a valuable data set for an anthropogenically impacted blue carbon habitat predicted to suffer from sea-level rise and exponential urban development.

Coupling of Anammox Activity and PAH Biodegradation: Current Insights and Future Directions

Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) has shown success in past years for the treatment of municipal and industrial wastewater containing inorganic nutrients (i.e., nitrogen). However, the increase in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH)-contaminated matrices calls for new strategies for efficient and environmentally sustainable remediation. Therefore, the present review examined the literature on the connection between the anammox process and PAHs using VOSviewer to shed light on the mechanisms involved during PAH biodegradation and the key factors affecting anammox bacteria. The scientific literature thoroughly discussed here shows that PAHs can be involved in nitrogen removal by acting as electron donors, and their presence does not adversely affect the anammox bacteria. Anammox activity can be improved by regulating the operating parameters (e.g., organic load, dissolved oxygen, carbon-to-nitrogen ratio) and external supplementation (i.e., calcium nitrate) that promote changes in the microbial community (e.g., Candidatus Jettenia), favoring PAH degradation. The onset of a synergistic dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium and partial denitrification can be beneficial for PAH and nitrogen removal.

Vertical organization of microbial communities in Salineta hypersaline wetland, Spain

Microbial communities inhabiting hypersaline wetlands, well adapted to the environmental fluctuations due to flooding and desiccation events, play a key role in the biogeochemical cycles, ensuring ecosystem service. To better understand the ecosystem functioning, we studied soil microbial communities of Salineta wetland (NE Spain) in dry and wet seasons in three different landscape stations representing situations characteristic of ephemeral saline lakes: S1 soil usually submerged, S2 soil intermittently flooded, and S3 soil with halophytes. Microbial community composition was determined according to different redox layers by 16S rRNA gene barcoding. We observed reversed redox gradient, negative at the surface and positive in depth, which was identified by PERMANOVA as the main factor explaining microbial distribution. The Pseudomonadota, Gemmatimonadota, Bacteroidota, Desulfobacterota, and Halobacteriota phyla were dominant in all stations. Linear discriminant analysis effect size (LEfSe) revealed that the upper soil surface layer was characterized by the predominance of operational taxonomic units (OTUs) affiliated to strictly or facultative anaerobic halophilic bacteria and archaea while the subsurface soil layer was dominated by an OTU affiliated to Roseibaca, an aerobic alkali-tolerant bacterium. In addition, the potential functional capabilities, inferred by PICRUSt2 analysis, involved in carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur cycles were similar in all samples, irrespective of the redox stratification, suggesting functional redundancy. Our findings show microbial community changes according to water flooding conditions, which represent useful information for biomonitoring and management of these wetlands whose extreme aridity and salinity conditions are exposed to irreversible changes due to human activities.

Potential Utilization of Bacterial Consortium of Symbionts Marine Sponges in Removing Polyaromatic Hydrocarbons and Heavy Metals, Review

Toxic materials in waste generally contain several components of the global trending pollutant category, especially PAHs and heavy metals. Bioremediation technology for waste management that utilizes microorganisms (bacteria) has not been fully capable of breaking down these toxic materials into simple and environmentally friendly chemical products. This review paper examines the potential application of a consortium of marine sponge symbionts with high performance and efficiency in removing PAHs and heavy metal contaminants. The method was carried out through a review of several related research articles by the author and published by other researchers. The results of the study conclude that the development of global trending pollutant (GTP) bioremediation technology could be carried out to increase the efficiency of remediation. Several types of marine sponge symbiont bacteria, hydrocarbonoclastic (R-1), metalloclastic (R-2), and metallo-hydro-carbonoclastic (R-3), have the potential to be applied to improve waste removal performance. A consortium of crystalline bacterial preparations is required to mobilize into GTP-exposed sites rapidly. Bacterial symbionts of marine sponges can be traced mainly to sea sponges, whose body surface is covered with mucus.

Effects of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons on marine and freshwater microalgae - A review

The first synthetic review of the PAHs effects on microalgae in experimental studies and aquatic ecosystems is provided. Phytoplankton and phytobenthos from marine and freshwaters show a wide range of sensitivities to PAHs, and can accumulate, transfer and degrade PAHs. Different toxicological endpoints including growth, chlorophyll a, in vivo fluorescence yield, membrane integrity, lipid content, anti-oxidant responses and gene expression are reported for both freshwater and marine microalgal species exposed to PAHs in culture and in natural assemblages. Photosynthesis, the key process carried out by microalgae appears to be the most impacted by PAH exposure. The effect of PAHs is both dose- and species-dependent and influenced by environmental factors such as UV radiation, temperature, and salinity. Under natural conditions, PAHs are typically present in mixtures and the toxic effects induced by single PAHs are not necessarily extrapolated to mixtures. Natural microalgal communities appear more sensitive to PAH contamination than microalgae in monospecific culture. To further refine the ecological risks linked to PAH exposure, species-sensitivity distributions (SSD) were analyzed based on published EC₅₀s (half-maximal effective concentrations during exposure). HC₅ (harmful concentration for 5% of the species assessed) was derived from SSD to provide a toxicity ranking for each of nine PAHs. The most water-soluble PAHs naphthalene (HC₅ = 650 µg/L), acenaphthene (HC₅ = 274 µg/L), and fluorene (HC₅ = 76.8 µg/L) are the least toxic to microalgae, whereas benzo[a]pyrene (HC₅ = 0.834 µg/L) appeared as the more toxic. No relationship between EC₅₀ and cell biovolume was established, which does not support assumptions that larger microalgal cells are less sensitive to PAHs, and calls for further experimental evidence. The global PAHs HC₅ for marine species was on average higher than for freshwater species (26.3 and 1.09 µg/L, respectively), suggesting a greater tolerance of marine phytoplankton towards PAHs. Nevertheless, an important number of experimental exposure concentrations and reported toxicity thresholds are above known PAHs solubility in water. The precise and accurate assessment of PAHs toxicity to microalgae will continue to benefit from more rigorously designed experimental studies, including control of exposure duration and biometric data on test microalgae.

Mixed polyaromatic hydrocarbon degradation by halotolerant bacterial strains from marine environment and its metabolic pathway

Accidents involving diesel oil spills are prevalent in sea- and coastal regions. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) can be adsorbed in soil and constitute a persistent contaminant due to their poor water solubility and complex breakdown. PAHs pollution is a pervasive environmental concern that poses serious risks to human life and ecosystems. Thus, it is the need of the hour to degrade and decontaminate the toxic pollutant to save the environment. Among all the available techniques, microbial degradation of the PAHs is proving to be greatly beneficial and effective. Bioremediation overcomes the drawbacks of most physicochemical procedures by eliminating numerous organic pollutants at a lower cost in ambient circumstances and has therefore become a prominent remedial option for pollutant removal, including PAHs. In the present study, we have studied the degradation of Low molecular Weight and High Molecular Weight PAH in combination by bacterial strains isolated from a marine environment. Optimum pH, temperature, carbon, and nitrogen sources, NaCl concentrations were found for efficient degradation using the isolated bacterial strains. At 250 mg/L concentration of the PAH mixture an 89.5% degradation was observed. Vibrio algiolytcus strains were found to be potent halotolerant bacteria to degrade complex PAH into less toxic simple molecules. GC-MS and FTIR data were used to probe the pathway of degradation of PAH.

The response of meiobenthinc sediment-dwelling nematodes to pyrene: Results from open microcosms, toxicokinetics and in silico molecular interactions

An experiment conducted with 'open microcosm' made by connected sedimentary compartments with different qualities was for 30 days to evaluate the migratory behaviour of nematodes as induced by exposure to pyrene. The nematofauna was collected along with sediment from a reference site in Bizerte lagoon. Following one week acclimatization period, the populated sediments were topped with azoic sediments, with a pyrene concentration of 150 μg kg^-1. The concentration of pyrene from sediments was measured on a weekly basis. A stable status of nematode assemblages was reached between the upper and lower compartments in each microcosm, whatever the treatment type. An upward exploratory phase was observed during the first two weeks within the assemblages, possibly induced by the repellent chemodetection of pyrene. This observation was confirmed by the toxicokinetic properties and molecular interactions of pyrene with the germ-line development Protein 3 and sex-determining protein of Caenorhabditis elegans as nematode model.

New insights into microbial community coalescence in the land-sea continuum

The land-sea continuum constitutes a mixing zone where soil microbial communities encounter, via runoff, those inhabiting marine coastal sediment resulting in community coalescence. Here, we propose an experimental approach, mimicking the land-sea continuum, to study the microbial community coalescence events in different situations, by 16S and 18S rRNA genes metabarcoding. The microbial community structure of sediment diverged with the soil inputs. For prokaryotes, phylogenetic enrichment and amplicon sequence variants (ASVs) replacements characterized the community changes in sediment receiving soil inputs. For fungi, despite phylogenetic enrichment was not observed, the fungal ASVs richness was maintained by soil inputs. Comparison of microbial communities revealed ASVs specific to sediment receiving soil inputs, and also ASVs shared with soil and/or runoff. Among these specific ASVs, four bacterial and one fungal ASVs were identified as indicators of coalescence. Our study provides evidences that coalescence involves the mixing of microorganisms and of the environment.

Contribution of dicarboxylic acids to pyrene biodegradation and transcriptomic responses of Enterobacter sp. PRd5

The colonization of degrading endophytic bacteria is an effective means to reduce the residues of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in crops. Dicarboxylic acids, as the main active components in crops, can affect the physiological activities of endophytic bacteria and alter the biodegradation process of PAHs in crops. In this study, malonic acid and succinic acid were selected as the representatives to investigate the contribution of dicarboxylic acids to pyrene biodegradation by endophytic Enterobacter sp. PRd5 in vitro. The results showed that dicarboxylic acids improved the biodegradation of pyrene and altered the expression of the functional gene of strain PRd5. Malonic acid and succinic acid reduced the half-life of pyrene by 20.0% and 27.8%, respectively. The degrading enzyme activities were significantly stimulated by dicarboxylic acids. There were 386 genes up-regulated and 430 genes down-regulated in strain PRd5 with malonic acid, while 293 genes up-regulated and 340 genes down-regulated with succinic acid. Those up-regulated genes were distributed in the functional classification of signal transduction, membrane transport, energy metabolism, carbohydrate metabolism, and amino acid metabolism. Malonic acid mainly enhanced the central carbon metabolism, cell proliferation, and cell activity. Succinic acid mainly improved the expression of degrading gene. Overall, the findings of this study provide new insights into the regulation and control of PAH stress by crops. Fungal-bacterial network in PAH-contaminated coastal marine sediment

Fungal microbiome interacts with the other biotic components in coastal sediment playing a key role in the overall coordination of the whole microbial community. These interactions are affected by human activities, such as the constant affluence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Although fungi and bacteria interactions have been found to play a key role in PAH bioremediation in soil, the effect of PAHs on fungal diversity and their specific interactions with bacteria in coastal sediments are yet to be investigated. The understanding of fungal bacterial interactions under PAH contamination is critical for further bioremediation regarding the important fungal diversity observed in coastal sediment. Here, we investigated the fungal bacterial co-occurrence in PAH-contaminated sediments. The co-occurrence network, constructed with sequencing data (bacterial 16S and fungal 18S rRNA genes barcoding) from 51 PAH-contaminated samples, revealed modules dominated by either fungi or bacteria, reflecting probably the different types of interaction possible between fungi and bacteria. Then, a network constructed from non-contaminated sample data was compared with a network built from the corresponding PAH-contaminated samples issued from a mesocosm experiment. The comparison revealed the effect of PAHs in fungi and bacteria interactions, characterized by a PAH-contaminated network exhibiting less abundant and diverse fungal and bacterial ASVs than the non-contaminated network. However, the links between the remaining ASVs in the PAH-contaminated network showed stronger correlations. Noteworthy, an ASV affiliated to Chrytridiomycota phylum was identified as a keystone fungal ASV forming a module in association with facultative anaerobic and anaerobic bacteria affiliated to the families Prolixibacteraceae, Fusobacteriaceae, and Desulfobulbaceae. These results suggest that fungi promote bacterial anaerobic metabolisms, which are important to cope with the presence of PAHs in sediments. Our study reveals the importance of fungal bacterial interactions in coastal sediments paving the way for future studies to fully understand fungal role in coastal sediment.

Bioaccessibility and Toxicity Assessment of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Two Contaminated Sites

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are ubiquitous soil contaminants, and their bioaccessibility determines their environmental risks in contaminated land. In the present study, the residual concentrations of PAHs in the soils of two industrial sites were determined, and their bioaccessibility was estimated by the hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin extraction (HPCD) extraction method. The results showed heavy PAH contamination at both site S1 (0.38-3342.5 mg kg^-1) and site S2 (0.2-138.18 mg kg^-1), of which high molecular weight (HMW) PAHs (4-, 5-, and 6-ring compounds) accounted for approximately 80%. The average bioaccessibility of PAHs at sites S1 and S2 was 52.02% and 29.28%, respectively. The bioaccessibility of certain PAH compounds decreased with increasing ring number of the molecule. Lower PAH bioaccessibility was detected in loamy and silty soil textures than in sandy soil. Moreover, among the soil properties, the dissolved organic matter, total organic carbon, total potassium, and total manganese concentrations had significant effects on the bioaccessibility of PAHs. The toxicity analysis showed that the composition and bioaccessibility of PAHs could affect their potential toxicity in soil. We suggest that bioaccessibility should be taken into consideration when assessing the toxicity of PAHs in soil, and more attention should be given to low-ring PAHs with high bioaccessibility.

Legacy and dispersant influence microbial community dynamics in cold seawater contaminated by crude oil water accommodated fractions

Dispersants, used for combating oil spills, increase hydrocarbon bioavailability promoting their biodegradation. Oil weathering process introduces harmful soluble hydrocarbons, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), into the water column, resulting in water-accommodated fraction (WAF). The presence of dispersants can influence the weathering process by increasing PAHs solubility, toxicity and biodegradability. However, little is known on how dispersants affect microbial communities and their degradation capacities, especially in cold environment where low temperature decreases microbial activity and thus hydrocarbon degradation. Here, we investigated the microbial community dynamics in cold water contaminated by WAF prepared from crude oil with or without a commercial dispersant (Finasol OSR52). The WAFs, prepared with Naphthenic North Atlantic crude oil, were used to contaminate seawater from Norwegian cold sites, one oil-contaminated and the other pristine. The WAF-contaminated seawaters were maintained in microcosms at 4 °C for 21 days. The content of PAHs and microbial compositions (16S rRNA gene sequencing) were determined at days 0, 7, 14 and 21. In addition, the 96 h toxicity assay with adult Acartia tonsa revealed WAFs toxicity at days 0 and 21. The toxicity of WAF mixtures, with and without dispersant, against Acartia tonsa was reduced during the experiment, but PAHs removal was not increased. The water from the oil-contaminated site showed the highest PAHs removal revealing legacy effect (presence of microorganisms adapted to PAHs). Additionally, our results reveal: i) microbial community plasticity allowing the adaptation to the presence of PAHs and dispersant, ii) specific bacteria taxa probably involved in PAHs degradation, and iii) dispersants shape the microbial communities dynamics by stimulating potential dispersant-degrading taxa, such as Fusibacter. Thus, our results provide valuable insights on the role of microbial community in determining the fate of water-solubilized hydrocarbon in cold environment while questioning the role of dispersant used for fighting oil spill.

Physico-Chemical and Ecotoxicological Evaluation of Marine Sediments Contamination: A Case Study of Rovinj Coastal Area, NE Adriatic Sea, Croatia

Comprehensive spatial and temporal data on sediment quality in the Adriatic Sea are lacking. Therefore, prior to planned anthropogenic interventions in the local marine environment, such as deepening of the Rovinj harbour, the results of physicochemical and ecotoxicological analyses of five local coastal sediments were compared with regional averages and SQGs of neighbouring countries. Analyses of sediment grain size, content of metals and heavy metals, PAHs and PCBs were performed according to standard protocols. Sediment quality was classified according to French legislation (N1 and N2 level) and sediment guidelines. The phytotoxicity of the eluates was studied by flax seed germination tests. The logistic regression models P_max and P_avg were used to estimate the probability of toxic effects. Except for the open sea (S5), all other sediments had concentrations slightly higher than the N1 for some metals (Cu, Ni, Hg, Cr) or ΣPAHs, while the Rovinj harbour (S1) reached the N2 value for mercury. The phytotoxicity assay with sediment eluates showed inhibition of germination, root length and root biomass production, with an average phytotoxicity index (PI) ranging from 6.06% to 42.00%. Significant correlations of P_avg and P_max values with phytotoxicity and other specific parameters were found. In general, according to the applied SQGs, there are no potential ecological impacts on the marine environment at any of the investigated sites, with the exception of site S1.

Global qualitative and quantitative distribution of micropollutants in the deep sea

Micropollutants (MPs) include a wide range of biological disruptors that can be toxic to wildlife and humans at very low concentrations (<1 μg/L). These mainly anthropogenic pollutants have been widely detected in different areas of the planet, including the deep sea, and have impacts on marine life. Because of this potential toxicity, the global distribution, quantity, incidence, and potential impacts of deep-sea MPs were investigated in a systematic review of the literature. The results showed that MPs have reached different zones of the ocean and are more frequently reported in the Northern Hemisphere, where higher concentrations are found. MPs are also concentrated in depths up to 3000 m, where they are also more frequently studied, but also extend deeper than 10,000 m. Potentially toxic metals (PTMs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDTs), organotins, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were identified as the most prevalent and widely distributed MPs at ≥200 m depth. PTMs are widely distributed in the deep sea in high concentrations; aluminum is the most prevalent up to 3000 m depth, followed by zinc and copper. PCBs, organotins, hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs), PAHs, and phenols were detected accumulated in both organisms and environmental samples above legislated thresholds or known toxicity levels. Our assessment indicated that the deep sea can be considered a sink for MPs.

Sterol and PAHs fingerprint analysis of organic matter at Southeast Brazilian Bay

Southeast Brazilian bays have been increasingly degraded by untreated organic loads. Therefore, to assess fecal contamination status, sediment quality regarding polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and sources of organic matter (OM), we have determined fine-grained and total organic carbon (TOC) content and concentrations of PAHs and sterols in twenty-six surface sediment samples in Sepetiba Bay. The fine-grained (1-26 %), TOC (0.20-3.45 %), PAHs (<LQ - 78.27 ng g^-1) and sterols (0.10-21.58 μg g^-1) results showed a decreasing trend from the internal to the external sector of the study area. The diagnostic ratios of selected PAHs and sterols indicated a mixture with significant contribution from continental and pyrolytic OM in all stations. The fecal contamination is significant to the internal sector of Sepetiba Bay. Considering a site-specific sediment quality guidelines (SQGs) the PAHs levels with more restricted benchmark values indicate the harbor and the internal sector as contaminated.

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon Degradation in the Sea-Surface Microlayer at Coastal Antarctica

As much as 400 Tg of carbon from airborne semivolatile aromatic hydrocarbons is deposited to the oceans every year, the largest identified source of anthropogenic organic carbon to the ocean. Microbial degradation is a key sink of these pollutants in surface waters, but has received little attention in polar environments. We have challenged Antarctic microbial communities from the sea-surface microlayer (SML) and the subsurface layer (SSL) with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) at environmentally relevant concentrations. PAH degradation rates and the microbial responses at both taxonomical and functional levels were assessed. Evidence for faster removal rates was observed in the SML, with rates 2.6-fold higher than in the SSL. In the SML, the highest removal rates were observed for the more hydrophobic and particle-bound PAHs. After 24 h of PAHs exposure, particle-associated bacteria in the SML showed the highest number of significant changes in their composition. These included significant enrichments of several hydrocarbonoclastic bacteria, especially the fast-growing genera Pseudoalteromonas, which increased their relative abundances by eightfold. Simultaneous metatranscriptomic analysis showed that the free-living fraction of SML was the most active fraction, especially for members of the order Alteromonadales, which includes Pseudoalteromonas. Their key role in PAHs biodegradation in polar environments should be elucidated in further studies. This study highlights the relevant role of bacterial populations inhabiting the sea-surface microlayer, especially the particle-associated habitat, as relevant bioreactors for the removal of aromatic hydrocarbons in the oceans.

Occurrence, origin and potential ecological risk of dissolved polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and organochlorines in surface waters of the Gulf of Gabès (Tunisia, Southern Mediterranean Sea)

We investigated the occurrence, origin, and potential ecological risk of dissolved polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyl (PCBs) and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in 27 surface water samples collected from a highly anthropized and industrialized area in the Gulf of Gabès (Tunisia, Southern Mediterranean Sea) in October-November 2017. The results demonstrated a wide range of concentrations (ng L^-1) with the following decreasing order: Ʃ16 PAHs (17.6-71.2) > Ʃ20 PCBs (2.9-33.7) > Ʃ6 DDTs (1.1-12.1) > Ʃ4 HCHs (1.1-14.8). Selected diagnostic ratios indicated a mixture of both pyrolytic and petrogenic sources of PAHs, with a predominance of petrogenic sources. PCB compositions showed distinct contamination signatures for tetra- to hepta-chlorinated PCBs, characteristic of contamination by commercial (Aroclor) PCB mixtures. The dominant OCP congeners were γ-HCH, 2,4'-DDD and 2,4'-DDE, reflecting past use of Lindane and DDTs in the study area. Agricultural, industrial and domestic activities, as well as atmospheric transport are identified as potential sources of PAHs, PCBs and OCPs in surface waters of the Gulf of Gabès. Toxic equivalents (TEQs) suggested a low carcinogenic potential for PAHs in seawater samples (mean of 0.14 ng TEQ L^-1). Evaluation of risk coefficients revealed low risk for PAHs and PCBs, and moderate to severe risk for OCPs.

An appraisal of early stage biofilm-forming bacterial community assemblage and diversity in the Arabian Sea, India

The community composition and distribution of early-stage (24 h) biofilm-forming bacteria on two different surfaces (glass slide and polystyrene plastic slide) at three different locations (Diu, Alang and Sikka) were studied using a culture-dependent and next-generation sequencing (NGS) approach in the Arabian Sea, Gujarat, India. The most dominant phyla observed using the NGS approach were the Proteobacteria among the sampling sites. Gammaproteobacteria class dominated both the surfaces among the sites and accounted for 46.7% to 89.2% of total abundance. The culture-dependent analysis showed Proteobacteria and Firmicutes as the dominant phyla on the surfaces within the sampling sites. During the initial colonization, hydrocarbon-degrading bacterial strains have also attached to the surfaces. The outcome of this study would be of great importance for targeting the early stage biofilm-forming and hydrocarbon-degrading bacterial isolates may help to degrade plastic in the marine environment.
