Abstract
BACKGROUND Adolescence is a complicated and sensitive period, and proper nutrition in this period of life can influence the quality and quantity of growth and maturity. The aim of the present study is to determine the factors associated with healthy eating behavior based on the developed theory of planned behavior in adolescents. MATERIALS AND METHODS This is a descriptive-correlational study in which 400 female students of the first grade of high school in Bandar Anzali participated. Among the junior high schools in this city, two schools were randomly selected and sampling was done using census method. Data collection tool was Healthy Eating Behavior questionnaire based on Theory of Planned Behavior, which includes three sections of demographic information, constructs of Theory of Planned Behavior, including attitude toward behavior, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, and behavioral intention, and food behavior, and food habits questionnaire. The scale was evaluated and confirmed by content validity ratio, content validity index, and alpha coefficient. P value was considered significant at less than 5%. Data analysis was performed using SPSS software 24, through linear regression and Pearson's correlation. RESULTS As shown by linear regression analysis, the developed theory of planned behavior is able to predict 26% of the variance of healthy eating behavior, and this predictive power is related to the constructs of behavioral intention, attitude, and habits. CONCLUSIONS In the present study, adding the variable of habits to the theory of planned behavior showed that this variable is very effective in predicting healthy eating behavior in adolescents, just like the constructs of behavioral intention and attitude. Therefore, it is suggested to carry out educational interventions based on the developed theory of planned behavior with the focus of the mentioned structures.

Abstract
This quantitative study examined the presence of culturally relevant health messages for African-Americans based on a preexisting dataset from 21 African-American churches in South Carolina (USA). Content analysis served as the primary methodological approach to code printed media messages based on their cultural relevance among African-Americans (Cohen's kappa = .74). Within the dataset (n = 2166), 477 (22%) items were identified as culturally relevant. A low prevalence of culturally relevant messages was found across the three message topics, two media types, and one media source. Due to the limited presence of culturally relevant messages, researchers should collaborate with African-American churches to design health promotion messages.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Non-Hispanic Black Americans experience the highest, and most rapidly increasing, rates of obesity. Despite evidence that this is at least somewhat related to poor diet quality, we have yet to identify effective interventions for improving diet quality long-term. Restrictive diets can be ineffective and often harmful. In contrast, there is a well-established connection between home cooking and lower body mass index, better diet quality, and improved health. PURPOSE The present study applied the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) to examine the effect of an intervention delivering cooking instruction, rather than nutrition information, on beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors pertaining to diet quality and cooking among Black adults in the USA. METHODS An online sample of Black Americans (N = 147), ages 18-76 (M = 30.69, SD = 10.42) were recruited via Prolific and randomized to view either a cooking tutorial video or a "standard of care" control webpage followed by either an implementation intentions (II) writing activity or a "freestyle" control writing activity. Cognitions and behavior related to healthy eating and cooking were measured at baseline, post-intervention, and 1-week follow-up. RESULTS Results of mixed-effects modeling indicated that participants randomized to the video condition reported significantly greater post-intervention intentions to cook (p < .001), which positively correlated with cooking behavior over the subsequent week (p < .01). There was no effect of the II intervention on subsequent-week behavior (ps > .413). Importantly, 75% (n = 105) indicated experiencing food insecurity at the time of data collection. CONCLUSIONS These results highlight a promising pathway for improving nutrition and diet-related health outcomes among Black Americans while highlighting that any intervention must account for food insecurity in this population.

Abstract
In the United States, hypertension is more common among individuals from racial and ethnic minority groups. Hypertension control rates are also lower for minority group members compared with White Americans. However, little research has employed well-established theoretical perspectives on health behavior, such as the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and the Model of Goal-Directed Behavior (MGB), to better understand racial differences in rates of hypertension control. The present study examines the psychological processes involved in efforts to control blood pressure, through the lens of the TPB augmented by the MGB, in hypertensive patients of three racial groups: American Indian/Alaska Native, Black/African American, and White. Participants completed measures of past efforts to control blood pressure, attitudes, norms, perceived behavioral control, intentions, and anticipated emotions. Analyses employed confirmatory factor analysis and cross-groups path analysis. Measurement of the theoretical constructs and core putative mediators of blood pressure control intentions were largely similar across racial groups. With regard to the patterns of relationships among the constructs, differences among the groups were most apparent in pathways from past efforts to both cognitive and affective theoretical antecedents of intentions. These findings contribute to the sparse literature on factors involved in racial differences in hypertension control rates and may inform future interventions aimed at increasing hypertension control behaviors. Abstract
ObjectiveTo examine Black emerging adult women's (ages 18-29) intention to meet the recommended daily intake of fruits and vegetables using the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB). Participants: Black emerging adult women (BEAW; N = 100). Methods: A cross-sectional survey design. Results: Hierarchical regression analyses revealed that in Model 1, attitudes (p<.0001) and subjective norms (p<.05) were significant predictors of intentions to meet the recommended daily intake of fruits and vegetables. In Model 2, attitudes (p=.0001) and perceived behavioral control (p<.0001) were revealed to be significant predictors of intentions. The change in R squared from Model 1 (R2=.304) and Model 2 (R2=.559), was 0.255 (F = 40.08, p<.0001) with the addition of perceived behavioral control to the second model. Conclusion: The TPB may be a suitable framework to assess factors associated with fruit and vegetable intentions among BEAW. Interventions designed to increase fruit and vegetable intake in BEAW should prioritize modifying perceived behavioral control.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Osteoporosis is mainly characterized by a low bone mineral density and a sharp architectural and biomechanical deterioration in bone tissue required to maintain bone homeostasis. The theory of planned behavior (TPB) can be considered as one of the leading theories when designing an evidence-based intervention. This study was carried out based on the TPB to determine the effect of an educational intervention aimed at mothers on the prevention of osteoporosis in female students. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of seventy mothers of lower secondary school students in Tehran, Iran, participated in this experimental study which was conducted in 2019-2020. The participants were randomly assigned to two groups, namely experimental and control groups. Based on the TPB, a demographic and a researcher-made questionnaire consisting of five sections were used in order to collect data. The validity and reliability of the questionnaires were confirmed before data collection. Four 45-60 min training programs were delivered to the subjects using the TPB. Data were collected before, immediately after, and 1 month following the training program. Finally, IBM SPSS Statistics 21 was used for statistical analysis. RESULTS No significant difference was observed in terms of attitude, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, behavioral intention, and osteoporosis prevention-related behavior between the experimental and control groups before proceeding with the intervention (P > 0.05). However, the mean scores of attitude, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, behavioral intention, and behavior were significantly higher in the experimental group compared to those of the control group following the educational intervention (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION It can be concluded that such interventions based on the TPB can, in fact, produce a significant effect on osteoporosis prevention-related behaviors. Thus, it can serve as a useful model for planning educational interventions.

Abstract
Objectives: Understanding university students' beliefs toward selecting healthy snacks is important in developing effective programs targeting healthy eating behaviors. The purpose of this research was to assess students' beliefs toward healthy snack selection and consumption. Participants: In November 2017, a convenience sample of 779 undergraduate students living on campus completed an online survey. Methods: A survey was developed to measure students' beliefs about eating healthy snacks. Paired t-tests were used to compare differences in beliefs and their importance. Independent t-tests were used to compare differences in belief responses by gender. Results: Students believed that healthy snacks were good for health and assisting with weight management. However, time management, motivation, preparation needs, and poor taste were reported as barriers to selection and consumption of healthy snacks. Conclusions: Increasing students' awareness of available food preparation facilities, developing food preparation skills, and motivation for consumption of healthy-good tasting snacks may increase healthier snacking.

Abstract
Background In the United States, among those living with mental illness, 81% of African American (AA) young adults do not seek treatment compared with 66% of their white counterparts. Although the literature has identified unique culturally related factors that impact help seeking among AAs, limited information exists regarding the development and evaluation of interventions that incorporate these unique factors. Objective This study aims to describe a study protocol designed to develop a culturally relevant, theory-based, psychoeducational intervention for AA young adults; to determine if exposure to the intervention impacts AA young adults’ willingness to seek help; and to determine whether cultural factors and stigma add to the prediction of willingness to seek help. Methods The Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and Barrera and Castro’s framework for cultural adaptation of interventions were used as guiding frameworks. In stage 1 (information gathering), a literature review and three focus groups were conducted to identify salient cultural beliefs. Using stage 1 results, the intervention was designed in stage 2 (preliminary adaptation design), and in stage 3 (preliminary adaptation tests), the intervention was tested using pretest, posttest, and 3-month follow-up surveys. An experimental, mixed methods, prospective one-group intervention design was employed, and the primary outcomes were participants’ willingness and intention to seek help for depression and actual help-seeking behavior. Results This study was funded in May 2016 and approved by the University of Texas at Austin institutional review board. Data were collected from November 2016 to March 2016. Of the 103 students who signed up to participate in the study, 70 (67.9%) completed the pre- and posttest surveys. The findings are expected to be submitted for publication in 2020. Conclusions The findings from this research are expected to improve clinical practice by providing empirical evidence as to whether a culturally relevant psychoeducational intervention is useful for improving help seeking among young AAs. It will also inform future research and intervention development involving the TPB and willingness to seek help by identifying the important factors related to willingness to seek help. Advancing this field of research may facilitate improvements in help-seeking behavior among AA young people and reduce the associated mental health disparities that apparently manifest early on. Abstract
Diabetes and heart disease disproportionately burden African Americans, who tend to have worse nutritional intake than Whites. Many Black churches are influential institutions in the Black community, with potential to assist with promotion of healthy eating behaviors. The purpose of the current study was to use the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) to examine intention to eat a healthy diet and dietary behaviors among church-affiliated African Americans. It was hypothesized that TPB constructs would positively predict intention to eat a healthy diet and that intention to eat a healthy diet would be a predictor of fat and fruit and vegetable intake. It was also hypothesized that control beliefs would predict reduced fat intake and increased fruit and vegetable intake. Path analyses indicated behavioral, normative, and control beliefs were predictive of intention to eat a healthy diet. Intention to eat healthy was a significant predictor of dietary intake behaviors. These findings provide support for the use of the TPB in examining diet among church-affiliated African Americans. This study represents an opportunity to inform dietary interventions for the African American faith community.

Abstract
Chronic disease carries high morbidity and mortality in the United States, with large racial and ethnic disparities observed in chronic disease. Physical activity and healthy food are vital for chronic disease prevention yet challenging to access in economically distressed areas. Public health prevention efforts have become particularly prominent within faith-based organizations over the last three decades. This manuscript describes the protocol of the Church Challenge, a multilevel cluster-randomized controlled nutrition and physical activity trial across 24 churches to reduce blood pressure by 6 mmHg among 576 residents in Flint, MI. The Church Challenge was developed using community-based participatory approaches and is rooted in a church-based program developed by and for primarily African-American Flint church congregations. This three-level intervention addresses health at the community (level 3), church (level 2), and individual (level 1) to reduce blood pressure, reduce chronic disease risk, and promote health equity and wellbeing in Flint. Churches are randomized in a 1:1 ratio to a 16-week physical activity and nutrition program or a 4-session health and wellness workshop. Flint is not a unique community but has a history of traumatic community wide events; even now, the public health infrastructure continues to be a challenge and distract residents from focusing on their health. This trial is highly significant and innovative because it uses a combination of evidence-based practices simultaneously supporting health behavior change for individuals and their faith organizations, and evaluates multilevel efforts to sustain long-term health promotion activities in vulnerable communities like Flint.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Psychosocial factors are important determinants of health behaviors and diet-related outcomes, yet relatively little work has explored their relation to food-purchasing and preparation behaviors in low-income populations. AIM To evaluate the psychosocial factors associated with food-related behaviors. METHODS Cross-sectional data collected from 465 low-income African American adult caregivers in the baseline evaluation of the B'more Healthy Communities for Kids obesity prevention trial. Questionnaires were used to assess household sociodemographic characteristics, food sources frequently used, and food preparation and food acquisition behaviors. Multiple linear regression models explored the associations between caregiver psychosocial variables and food-related behaviors, controlling for caregivers' age, sex, household income, household size, and food assistance participation. RESULTS Caregivers purchased prepared food at carry-outs on average 3.8 times (standard deviation [ SD] = 4.6) within 30 days. Less healthy foods were acquired 2 times more frequently than healthier foods ( p < .001). Higher food-related behavioral intention and self-efficacy scores were positively associated with healthier food acquisition (β = 0.7; 95% confidence interval [CI] [0.09, 1.4]; β = 0.04; 95% CI [0.02, 0.06]) and negatively associated with frequency of purchasing at prepared food sources (β = -0.4; 95% CI [-0.6, -0.2]; β = -0.5; 95% CI [-0.7, -0.3]), respectively. Higher nutrition knowledge was associated with lower frequency of purchasing food at prepared food venues (β = -0.7; 95% CI: [-1.2, -0.2]). DISCUSSION Our findings indicate a positive association between psychosocial determinants and healthier food acquisition and food preparation behaviors. CONCLUSION Interventions that affect psychosocial factors (i.e., food-related behavioral intentions and self-efficacy) may have the potential to increase healthier food preparation and food-purchasing practices among low-income African American families.

Abstract
Obesity has become a world-wide epidemic; in the United States (U.S.) approximately two-thirds of adults are classified as overweight or obese. Military veterans' numbers are even higher, with 77% of retired or discharged U.S. veterans falling in these weight categories. One of the most common methods of changing one's weight is through dieting, yet little is known regarding the factors that facilitate successful dieting behavior. The current investigation tested the Theory of Planned Behavior's (TPB) ability to predict dietary intention and future dieting in a sample of 84 overweight and obese patients attending medical clinics at a Veterans Affairs Hospital in the southwestern part of the U.S. Participants primarily were male (92%) and ethnic/racial minorities (58%). Perceived need and anticipated regret were added to the standard TPB model. While the TPB predicted dietary intention, it did not significantly account for improved dietary behaviors. Anticipated regret significantly enhanced the basic TPB's ability to predict intention to diet, while perceived need did not. These findings highlight the difficulty in predicting sustained change in a complex behavior such as dieting to lose weight. The need for more work with older, overweight/obese medical patients attending veterans' facilities is stressed, as is the need for such work with male patients and ethnic minorities in particular.

Abstract
The combination of economic and social costs associated with non-communicable diseases provide a compelling argument for developing strategies that can influence modifiable risk factors, such as discrete food choices. Models of behaviour, such as the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) provide conceptual order that allows program designers and policy makers to identify the substantive elements that drive behaviour and design effective interventions. The primary aim of the current review was to examine the association between TPB variables and discrete food choice behaviours. A systematic literature search was conducted to identify relevant studies. Calculation of the pooled mean effect size (r(+)) was conducted using inverse-variance weighted, random effects meta-analysis. Heterogeneity across studies was assessed using the Q- and I(2)-statistics. Meta-regression was used to test the impact of moderator variables: type of food choice behaviour; participants' age and gender. A total of 42 journal articles and four unpublished dissertations met the inclusion criteria. TPB variables were found to have medium to large associations with both intention and behaviour. Attitudes had the strongest association with intention (r(+) = 0.54) followed by perceived behavioural control (PBC, r(+) = 0.42) and subjective norm (SN, r(+) = 0.37). The association between intention and behaviour was r(+) = 0.45 and between PBC and behaviour was r(+) = 0.27. Moderator analyses revealed the complex nature of dietary behaviour and the factors that underpin individual food choices. Significantly higher PBC-behaviour associations were found for choosing health compromising compared to health promoting foods. Significantly higher intention-behaviour and PBC-behaviour associations were found for choosing health promoting foods compared to avoiding health compromising foods. Participant characteristics were also found to moderate associations within the model. Higher intention-behaviour associations were found for older, compared to younger age groups. The variability in the association of the TPB with different food choice behaviours uncovered by the moderator analyses strongly suggest that researchers should carefully consider the nature of the behaviour being exhibited prior to selecting a theory.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Examine intentions to buy and eat dark green leafy vegetables (DGLV). DESIGN Cross-sectional survey assessing demographics, behavior, intention, and Reasoned Action Approach constructs (attitude, perceived norm, self-efficacy). SETTING Marion County, Indiana. PARTICIPANTS African American women responsible for buying and preparing household food. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S) Reasoned Action Approach constructs explaining intentions to buy and eat DGLV. ANALYSIS Summary statistics, Pearson correlations, and multiple regression analyses. RESULTS Among participants (n = 410, mean age = 43 y), 76% and 80%, respectively, reported buying and eating DGLV in the past week. Mean consumption was 1.5 cups in the past 3 days. Intentions to buy (r = 0.20, P < .001) and eat (r = 0.23, P < .001) DGLV were positively associated with consumption. Reasoned Action Approach constructs explained 71.2% of the variance in intention to buy, and 60.9% of the variance in intention to eat DGLV. Attitude (β = .63) and self-efficacy (β = .24) related to buying and attitude (β = .60) and self-efficacy (β = .23) related to eating DGLV explained significant amounts of variance in intentions to buy and eat more DGLV. Perceived norm was unrelated to either intention to buy or eat DGLV. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS Interventions designed for this population of women should aim to improve DGLV-related attitudes and self-efficacy.
