Abstract
PURPOSE To review and synthesize the literature on interventions to facilitate shared decision-making or to increase participation in decision-making in pediatrics focusing on interventions for children and adolescents. METHODS We systematically searched three electronic databases (September 2021, update in September 2022). We included studies that aimed to increase involvement of children and adolescents in medical or treatment decisions, regardless of study design and reported outcomes. Study quality was assessed using the MMAT. The synthesis strategy followed a narrative methodology. RESULTS 21 studies met the inclusion criteria. Interventions aimed to increase participation by provision of information, encouraging active participation and collaboration. Didactic strategies included digital interactive applications (n = 12), treatment protocols and guiding questions (n = 12), questionnaires or quizzes about patients' condition or their knowledge (n = 8), visual aids (n = 4), and educational courses (n = 1). Findings indicate positive effects on some of the investigated outcomes. However, the heterogeneity of studies made it difficult to draw consistent conclusions about the effectiveness of interventions. CONCLUSIONS Interventions used a variety of approaches to facilitate SDM and increase participation. The findings suggest that interventions have inconsistent effects across different outcome variables. The evidence was limited due to the methodological shortcomings of the included studies. IMPACT To increase the participation of children and adolescents in decision-making, interventions targeting them are needed. Most intervention focus on the provision of information and encouragement for active participation. The results suggest high feasibility and, mostly, positive effects in participation, health-related knowledge, patient-HCP relationship, and adherence The study highlights that further high-quality studies using similar outcome parameters are needed to investigate the effects of interventions to facilitate participation in decision-making.

Abstract
Adolescence is an important time in which young people take on type 1 diabetes (T1D) self-management responsibility. Parents are key facilitators of this process. Little is known about parents' experiences of communicating with their children about T1D during adolescence. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 32 parents (24 mothers and 8 fathers) of adolescents (11-17 years) living with T1D to explore how parents communicate about T1D and self-management with their adolescent children. Parents were recruited through two national child and adolescent diabetes and endocrine clinics and online advertisement through a national diabetes advocacy organisation. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and thematically analysed. Six themes were identified: parent factors, quality of the parent-adolescent relationship, communication strategies, adolescent factors, communication triggers and family/system factors. Understanding factors that impact communication about self-management between parents and adolescents will enable healthcare professionals to provide support and targeted interventions as parent and adolescent roles change over time.

Abstract
Purpose: Empowering adolescents and young adult (AYA) patients to be involved in cancer responsibilities (e.g., remembering medications), as opposed to solely relying on caregivers, may have important short- and long-term benefits for development and disease management. This study explored perceptions of AYA engagement with cancer-related responsibilities and plans for transferring these responsibilities from caregivers to AYAs. Methods: A total of 30 AYA-caregiver dyads (including 11 early adolescents, 10 adolescents, and 9 young adults who were receiving chemotherapy and/or radiation) jointly completed a semi-structured interview. Interviews assessed the present allocation of cancer responsibilities within the family, how cancer responsibilities were divided this way, and prompted a dyadic discussion to draft a plan to transfer a responsibility to the AYA in the future. Directed content analysis techniques were used to identify and organize relevant themes. Results: Themes showed that (1) cancer responsibilities were initially assumed "naturally" by caregivers, without much formal discussion; (2) greater AYA involvement in cancer care reflected AYA (e.g., age, willingness) and caregiver factors (e.g., knowledge/skills, anxiety); (3) over time, dyads mutually prioritized AYA engagement with cancer care; and (4) the need for more proactive clinical support with transferring care tasks to AYAs. Discussion: Caregivers play a key role in managing cancer care with or for AYAs, with the allocation of these responsibilities being influenced by several factors that can shift over time. Dyads typically viewed the transfer process as important but desired more clinical support. This reflects a potential self-management care gap to address in future studies and dyadic interventions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Suboptimal nutritional adherence in adolescents with cystic fibrosis (awCF) has been associated with lower lung function. AwCF often have more independence in dietary decisions than younger children, yet little research has examined how adolescent decision-making relates to nutritional adherence. This study explored whether components of adolescent decision-making involvement facilitate enzyme and caloric adherence in awCF. METHODS 37 families participated and completed study procedures. AwCF and caregivers completed electronic surveys, including the Decision-Making Involvement Scale (DMIS). The DMIS evaluated awCF behaviors during nutrition-related decision-making/discussions with caregivers using DMIS subscales: Child Seek (asking for help/advice from caregivers), Child Express (awCF stating opinions) and Joint/Options (awCF participating in joint decision-making or caregiver providing options). AwCF completed 2, 24-hr diet recalls via videoconferencing/phone to estimate adherence. Chart reviews collected medical information. DMIS subscales were regressed onto enzyme and caloric adherence. RESULTS 43% of awCF met calorie recommendations; 48.6% took all enzymes as prescribed. Caloric adherence was positively correlated with adolescent- and parent-reported Child Seek (r = 0.53; r = 0.36) and adolescent-reported Joint/Options (r = 0.41). Per adolescent-report, the caloric adherence regression model was significant, with Child Seek contributing unique variance in caloric adherence (β = .62, p = .03). Parent-reported adolescent-decision-making involvement significantly predicted caloric adherence, but none of the subscales contributed unique variance. No other regressions were significant. CONCLUSIONS When awCF participated in nutrition-related discussions with a caregiver, especially with questions, caloric adherence was better. Future research should examine whether family factors influence these results. AwCF are encouraged to ask questions in nutrition discussions.

Abstract
AIM To gain an understanding of children's experiences of expressing their views and having them heard in Australian healthcare settings. DESIGN Child-centred qualitative research. A deductive qualitative content analysis was undertaken. METHODS Data were collected from 20 Australian children and young people between the ages of 7 and 18 years old using the 'draw, write and tell' method. RESULTS Children's experiences of 'space' and 'voice', and therefore the opportunity to express their views in health care were, in the main, positive. At the same time, their experiences of 'audience' and 'influence', the situations in which those views are given due weight, were overwhelmingly described as negative. CONCLUSION Australian paediatric health services appear to have responded to calls to provide children with the opportunity to express their views and thus are delivering on the elements of 'space' and 'voice', whereas the realisation of 'audience' and 'influence' has some way to go. Due weight is not always given to children's views. IMPLICATIONS FOR THE PROFESSION AND/OR PATIENT CARE The Lundy model can be used to facilitate a better understanding of the concept of voice, and the responsibility of health organisations in implementing the rights of children and young people, as articulated in Article 12. IMPACT Children and young people have a right to express their views and have them heard in health care, but their experiences in Australian health care are unknown. While children's experiences of expressing their views in health care were mostly positive, their views are not always taken seriously or given due weight. This research impacts child health professionals in Australia and internationally. REPORTING METHOD The study is reported using the Standards for Reporting Qualitative Research (SRQR). PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION Members of the Youth Advisory Council of two tertiary children's hospitals were consulted and invited to become members of the research team.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION When and how to provide condition-related information to adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with differences of sex development or sex chromosome aneuploidies (DSDs or SCAs) is largely based on anecdotal experience and lacks informed guidance. For AYAs with a DSD or SCA, having accurate information is critical for attaining optimal adjustment and well-being, participating in decision making related to treatment options, and transitioning successfully to adult health care, yet prior studies have focused exclusively on parental perspectives and not on the views of adolescents themselves. OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to describe unmet information needs in AYAs with a DSD or SCA and examine associations with perceived global health. METHODS Participants were recruited from specialty clinics at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (n = 20) and Children's Hospital Colorado (n = 60). AYAs ages 12-21 years with a DSD or SCA and a parent completed a survey assessing perceived information needs across 20 topics, importance of those topics, and global health using the PROMIS Pediatric Global Health questionnaire (PGH-7). RESULTS AYAs had diagnoses of Klinefelter syndrome (41%), Turner syndrome (25%), and DSD (26%) and were 16.7 years (SD = 2.56) and 44% female. Parent participants were primarily mothers (81%). AYAs perceived that 48.09% of their information needs were unmet (SD = 25.18, range: 0-100). Parents perceived that 55.31% of AYAs' information needs were unmet (SD = 27.46 range: 5-100). AYAs and parents across conditions reported unmet needs related to information about transition to adult health care, financial support for medical care, and how the condition might affect the AYA's health in the future. While AYA-reported PGH-7 scores were not associated with percentage of AYA unmet information needs, parent-reported PGH-7 scores were (r = -.46, p < .001), such that lower parent-reported global health was associated with higher percentage of AYA unmet information needs. DISCUSSION/CONCLUSION On average, parents and AYAs perceived that half of AYAs' information needs were unmet, and a higher percentage of AYA unmet information needs was associated with lower perceived global health. The frequency of unmet needs in this sample of AYAs reflects an opportunity for improvement in clinical care. Future research is needed to understand how education to children and AYAs unfolds as they mature and to develop strategies to address the information needs of AYAs with a DSD or SCA, promote well-being, and facilitate AYA engagement in their own health care.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION This study aimed to describe adolescent, parent, and clinician ideas for enhancing adolescent decision-making involvement (DMI) during clinic visits for chronic illness. METHOD Adolescents who recently attended a follow-up visit for a chronic illness, their parents, and clinicians were interviewed. Participants completed semistructured interviews; transcripts were coded and analyzed in NVivo. Responses to questions about ideas to increase adolescent DMI were reviewed and sorted into categories and themes. RESULTS There were five themes: (1) adolescents need to understand their condition and regimen, (2) adolescents and parents should prepare before the visit, (3) clinicians and adolescents should have one-on-one time, (4) opportunities for condition-specific peer support would be helpful, and (5) clinicians and parents should engage in specific communication behaviors. DISCUSSION Findings from this study highlight potential clinician-, parent-, and adolescent-focused strategies for enhancing adolescent DMI. Clinicians, parents, and adolescents may need specific guidance on how to enact new behaviors.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine hypothesized predictors of adolescent and parent involvement in the decision about which genomic results to receive. STUDY DESIGN We conducted a longitudinal cohort study during phase 3 of the electronic Medical Records and Genomics (eMERGE) Network. Dyads reported on how they preferred to make choices (adolescent only, parent only, or jointly). Dyads used a decision tool to choose independently the categories of genetic testing results they wanted. We summarized independent choices, identifying initially discordant dyads. After a facilitated discussion, dyads made a joint decision. Dyads then completed the Decision-Making Involvement Scale (DMIS). We conducted bivariate correlations between DMIS subscale scores and the following hypothesized predictors: adolescent age, preference for adolescent to make their own decision, and discordance on initial independent choices. RESULTS The sample included 163 adolescents, aged 13-17 years and parents (86.5% mothers). Dyads lacked agreement on how they wanted to make the final decision (weighted kappa statistic 0.04; 95% CI -0.08 to 0.16). These preferences, as well as the adolescent's age and adolescent-parent discordance on initial choices for specific categories of genetic testing results to receive, were associated with subsequent decision-making involvement behaviors as measured by DMIS subscales. Dyads with discordant initial preferences had significantly greater scores on the DMIS Joint/Options subscale than those with concordant initial preferences (adolescent report M [SD] 2.46 [0.60] vs 2.10 [0.68], P < .001). CONCLUSIONS Through facilitated discussion, adolescents and parents can work together and reach agreement about receipt of genomic screening results.

Abstract
Objective Barriers to medication adherence are common in pediatric epilepsy and associated with nonadherence, suboptimal seizure outcomes, and quality of life. A manualized, family-tailored education and problem-solving adherence intervention to address adherence barriers was tested in a randomized controlled trial in young children (2-12 years) with epilepsy. Study aims were to identify the adherence barriers and solutions chosen by families during intervention. Methods Participants with demonstrated non-adherence were randomized to either education attention control or treatment. In this exploratory, secondary analysis, treatment group data were examined, including adherence barriers and solutions discussed during face-to-face problem-solving sessions and telephone follow-ups. Treatment data were independently coded utilizing codebook thematic analysis. Results Twenty-seven children were randomized to treatment (M=7.5±2.9; 59.1% female). Across sessions, coding revealed 10 adherence barriers: Overall Forgetting (38-57%), Routine Change Routine (14-24%), Competing Activities (5-19%), Opposition (0-9%), Transition of Responsibility (0-5%), Running Out of Medication (0-10%), Forgetting During Travel (0-10%), Medication Not a Priority (0-5%), Medication Taste (0-5%), and Pill Swallowing (0-5%). Eight solution types were chosen and implemented by families: Environmental Cuing (29-50%), Multi-Pronged solutions (0-24%), Positive Reinforcement (14-23%), Back-up Doses (0-14%), Refill Tracking (0-10%), Caregiver Modeling of Adherence Behavior (0-5%), Pill Swallowing Intervention (0-5%), and Other (0-5%). Conclusions Results highlight key adherence barriers identified by families of children with epilepsy and solutions implemented to address them. These data provide guidance to healthcare teams on how to successfully address adherence barriers in clinical settings.Clinical trials #NCT01851057.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to present the results of a scoping review on the implementation of Article12 in health care. The scoping review will provide a summary and overview of the key concepts and published literature on this topic internationally. Article 12 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989) states that children have a right to express their views, to have them heard and for their views to be given due weight in all matters that affect them. Despite increased calls for Article 12 to be given attention in health care, there is little evidence to suggest this has been well implemented and embedded in Australian health-care delivery. The scoping review was undertaken to provide a summary and overview of the key concepts and published literature on this topic internationally.
Design/methodology/approach
A five-step methodological framework described by Arksey and O’Malley (2005) was used to undertake the scoping review. Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis was used as a guideline for undertaking the study selection.
Findings
Children are still not routinely involved in health-care decision-making, are frequently left out of service planning and evaluation and the perception that they lack the capability to make rational decisions persists.
Originality/value
While there has been a focus on research that investigates children’s participation in health-care decision-making in recent years, there is little that directs attention specifically to the implementation of Article 12, particularly in Australian health care. Recommendations are made for further research in these areas.

Abstract
Recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH) is prescribed to youth with growth hormone deficiency (GHD) to support normal growth and ensure healthy physical development, and to youth without GHD to address height concerns. Perceptions of youth involvement in rhGH treatment decisions have not been explored. This study aimed to examine perceptions of youth and parent roles in decisions around rhGH treatment. Youth (n = 22, 11.5 ± 2.0 years) who had undergone evaluation for short stature and their parents (n = 22) participated in semi-structured interviews after stimulation test results had been received. Interviews revealed the following themes: 1) parent provided youth with support; 2) parent facilitated youth's decision-making involvement; 3) youth had no role or did not remember their role; and 4) youth did not remember conversations with their parents or providers. Parents facilitated their children's involvement by sharing information and seeking their opinions. Whereas some participants described youth as having a substantial decision-making role, not all youth felt they were involved, and some youth could not recall conversations about rhGH. Parents can bolster youth involvement by having conversations using developmentally appropriate language, which is critical to youth feeling empowered and developing efficacy over their own care.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The term 'Responsibility Sharing', albeit poorly defined, has emerged from the diabetes literature, to describe a distinct mechanism for comprehensively managing the characteristic shift in responsibility that underpins the transition to self-management for adolescents. METHODS A scoping review, following the PRISMA-ScR guidelines, distilled the literature from seven databases to answer the questions: What is responsibility sharing? Who are the key stakeholders? What factors affect responsibility transaction? What are its recognized outcomes? How is responsibility shared? RESULTS Responsibility sharing is a transactional arrangement between youth and their caregiver/s that functions to repeatedly and flexibly apply ownership to the management of diabetes care tasks, across the course of adolescence. In the main, responsibility sharing was associated with better metabolic and/or psychosocial outcomes. Effective responsibility sharing was seen as being responsive to adolescent capacity and driven by autonomy supportive, sustained communication patterns that enable mutually agreeable responsibility assumption by all stakeholders. CONCLUSION Different perspectives on responsibility sharing for adolescents with Type 1 diabetes, and the lack of a universal definition, have led to discordance within the literature about its operationalization and measurement. This paper proposes a definition of responsibility sharing for future researchers to apply.

Abstract
PURPOSE Clean intermittent catheterization (CIC) responsibility among youths with spina bifida is not well studied. We sought to determine longitudinal trajectories of CIC responsibility to examine the transition of CIC responsibility from caregiver-CIC to self-CIC. MATERIALS AND METHODS We performed a secondary analysis of a prospective cohort study of youths with spina bifida. Participants aged 8-15 years originally recruited from 4 hospitals and a statewide spina bifida association were followed every 2 years. Participants who required CIC were included. Group-based trajectory modeling was used to isolate distinct trajectories of CIC responsibility, which was the primary outcome and was graded from caregiver-CIC to shared-CIC to self-CIC. Predictors of trajectory group membership were entered into multivariate logistic regression models and included various demographic, clinical and psychosocial characteristics such as CIC adherence and CIC mastery. RESULTS Of 140 youths in the original cohort study, 89 met eligibility criteria for this study. Mean age was 11 years at enrollment and 93% of patients had myelomeningocele. Two distinct trajectory groups emerged: 17% of patients had a low-flat trajectory and 83% had a high-increasing trajectory of CIC responsibility, with shared-CIC by age 8-9 years and increasing self-CIC responsibility thereafter. Significant predictors of group membership in the high-increasing trajectory group included less severe spinal lesion levels, higher CIC mastery and lower CIC adherence. CONCLUSIONS Nearly 1 in 5 youths with spina bifida in our cohort persistently required caregiver-CIC over time, while the remainder achieved shared-CIC responsibility by age 8-9 years, with increasing self-CIC responsibility thereafter.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Transition to adult healthcare is a critical time for adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with sickle cell disease, and preparation for transition is important to reducing morbidity and mortality risks associated with transition. OBJECTIVE We explored the relationships between decision-making involvement, self-efficacy, healthcare responsibility, and overall transition readiness in AYAs with sickle cell disease prior to transition. METHODS This cross-sectional, correlational study was conducted with 50 family caregivers-AYAs dyads receiving care from a large comprehensive sickle cell clinic between October 2019 and February 2020. Participants completed the Decision-Making Involvement Scale, the Sickle Cell Self-Efficacy Scale, and the Readiness to Transition Questionnaire. Multiple linear regression was used to assess the relationships between decision-making involvement, self-efficacy, healthcare responsibility, and overall transition readiness in AYAs with sickle cell disease prior to transition to adult healthcare. RESULTS Whereas higher levels of expressive behaviors, such as sharing opinions and ideas in decision-making, were associated with higher levels of AYA healthcare responsibility, those behaviors were inversely associated with feelings of overall transition readiness. Self-efficacy was positively associated with overall transition readiness but inversely related to AYA healthcare responsibility. Parent involvement was negatively associated with AYA healthcare responsibility and overall transition readiness. DISCUSSION While increasing AYAs' decision-making involvement may improve AYAs' healthcare responsibility, it may not reduce barriers of feeling unprepared for the transition to adult healthcare. Facilitating active AYA involvement in decision-making regarding disease management, increasing self-efficacy, and safely reducing parent involvement may positively influence their confidence and capacity for self-management.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Understanding barriers to self-management behaviors and glycemic stability may inform specific needs for behavior change in adolescents and young adults with type 1 diabetes (T1D). The current review aims to systematically synthesize the literature on the relationships between executive functioning, self-management, and A1C in adolescents and young adults with T1D. Fifteen studies were retained in the current review. Study quality assessment for the majority of the studies were "Fair" or "Good." RECENT FINDINGS This review highlights several advances in research design, including use of longitudinal designs, data from multiple informants, and use of objective measures. Adolescents and young adults reported that more executive functioning weaknesses were related to decreased self-management behaviors and higher A1C. The current review demonstrated that self-perceived executive functioning weaknesses negatively impact self-management behaviors and A1C. Future research is needed to determine the utility of objective measures in assessing the relationships between executive functioning, T1D self-management, and A1C.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to describe parents' perceptions of the factors that facilitate or are barriers to their involvement in children's type 1 diabetes (T1D) management among African American and Latino parents. METHODS African American and Latino parents (N = 28) of 5- to 9-year-old children with T1D completed audio-recorded, semi-structured interviews that were transcribed and analyzed using thematic analysis. Themes were identified that aligned with the theoretically-derived Capability-Opportunity-Motivation-Behavior (COM-B) framework. RESULTS Parents described Capability-based facilitators of parent involvement, including positive stress management, religious/spiritual coping, organizational/planning skills, and diabetes knowledge. Capability-based barriers included child and parent distress. Interpersonal relationships, degree of flexibility in work environments, and access to diabetes technologies were both Opportunity-based facilitators and barriers; and Opportunity-based barriers consisted of food insecurity/low financial resources. Parents' desire for their child to have a "normal" life was described as both a Motivation-based facilitator and barrier. CONCLUSIONS African American and Latino families described helpful and unhelpful factors that spanned all aspects of the COM-B model. Reinforcing or targeting families' unique psychological, interpersonal, and environmental strengths and challenges in multilevel interventions has potential to maximize parental involvement in children's diabetes management.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine if there are distinct developmental trajectories of medical responsibility in youth with spina bifida (SB) across ages 8-17 years and to identify condition-related, parental, and family systems predictors of membership in these trajectory groups. METHODS Participants were 140 youth with SB and their parents who participated in four waves of a longitudinal study across 6 years (ages 8-15 years at Time 1). Multi-method (questionnaires and observed family interactions) and multi-respondent assessments were conducted during home visits. RESULTS Findings revealed that there were two distinct developmental trajectories that characterized this sample, with one being labeled "high increasing" (two thirds of the sample) and one labeled "low increasing" (one third of the sample). Most predictor variables were significantly associated with trajectory group membership, with the exception of ethnicity, SES, and measures of conflict. When all significant univariate predictors were included in the same model, only intelligence quotient (IQ), family stress, and gender were retained as significant. CONCLUSIONS Most youth exhibited relatively rapid increases in responsibility over the course of late childhood and adolescence, but there was a smaller portion of the sample that did not exhibit this type of developmental trajectory. The magnitude of the IQ effect on group differentiation appeared to attenuate the effects of most other predictors. It will be important for clinicians working with youth with SB to recognize that the transfer of medical responsibility from parent to child cannot be expected to unfold in the same manner for all families of youth with SB.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The ability of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) to improve diabetes outcomes depends upon consistent use. To identify factors that facilitate long-term use of CGM, this study tested the hypothesis that youth involvement in the decision to initiate this therapy would influence subsequent CGM use and that CGM self-efficacy and satisfaction mediate this relationship. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS Before initiating CGM, parent-youth dyads (i.e., pairs) from an academic endocrinology clinic completed assessments, including a measure of the child's involvement in the decision to start CGM. Two months into CGM use, youth completed measures of CGM self-efficacy and satisfaction. Fidelity of CGM use between weeks 5 and 12 was accessed via a cloud-based data repository. Hypotheses were tested with linear mixed-effects models, accounting for patients clustered within provider and repeated measures within patients. RESULTS CGM use in 108 dyads (youth mean age 13.4 ± 2.7 years; 73% White) was positively predicted by baseline parent report of youth involvement in the CGM decision (P < 0.0001), and this relationship was mediated by youth's perceptions of CGM self-efficacy (P < 0.0001) and hassle (P = 0.014). So, when the youth shared their opinions about CGM with parents and participated in the decision to start, they perceived higher self-efficacy and lower hassle at 2-month follow-up, which predicted more days of use. This pattern held in models adjusting for youth race and sex and family income. CONCLUSIONS To achieve maximum clinical benefit from CGM use, providers should facilitate youth involvement in the decision to initiate the device.

Abstract
In an effort to identify pathways for improvements in clinical monitoring and intervention, the current study investigated the role that parenting style plays in treatment adherence and responsibility for youth with CF. Participants (n = 50) completed questionnaires related to treatment adherence, treatment responsibility, and parenting style at baseline and at a two year follow up visit. Aspects of parenting style (e.g., warmth, autonomy support) were related to youth adherence and responsibility in cross-sectional and prospective analyses. These data suggest that aspects of parenting may be important targets of interventions to promote treatment adherence in youth with CF.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The goal of this study was to test the hypothesis that diabetes self-efficacy mediates the relationship between impulse control and type 1 diabetes (T1D) management from ages 8 to 18 years, using multilevel modeling. METHODS Participants included 117 youth with T1D and their parents. Youth (aged 8-16 years at baseline) and parents were assessed 5 times over 2 years. Using a cohort sequential design, we first estimated the growth trajectory of adherence from age 8 to 18 years, then specified a multilevel mediation model using impulse control as the main predictor, diabetes self-efficacy as the mediator, and changes in adherence (both within- and between-individuals) as the outcome. RESULTS According to youth-reported adherence only, self-efficacy partially mediated the within-person effect of impulse control on adherence. On occasions when youth reported increases in impulse control, they tended to report higher adherence, and this was, in part, due to increases in youths' perceived self-efficacy. Self-efficacy accounted for approximately 21% of the within-person relationship between impulse control and youth-reported adherence. There was no association between impulse control and adherence between-individuals. Impulse control and self-efficacy were not related to parent-reported adherence. CONCLUSION Environments that enrich youth with confidence in their own diabetes-related abilities may benefit self-care behaviors in youth with T1D, but such increases in youths' perceived competence do not fully account for, or override, the behavioral benefits of impulse control. Efforts to improve adherence in youth with T1D will benefit from consideration of both impulse control and self-efficacy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Adolescents and young adults undergoing heart transplantation experience risks of morbidity and mortality both pre- and post-transplant. To improve end-of-life care for this population, it is necessary to understand their medical and end-of-life decision-making preferences. AIM (1) To examine adolescent/young adult decision-making involvement specific to heart transplant listing, and (2) to characterize their preferences specific to medical and end-of-life decision making. DESIGN This cross-sectional research study utilized survey methods. Data were collected from October 2016 to March 2018. SETTING/PARTICIPANTS Twelve adolescent and young adult patients listed for heart transplant (ages = 12-19 years) and one parent for each were enrolled at a single-center, US children's hospital. RESULTS Consistent with their preferences, the majority of adolescent/young adult participants (82%) perceived a high level of involvement in the decision to be listed for transplant. Patient involvement in this decision was primarily by way of seeking advice or information from their parents and being asked to express their opinion from parents. Despite a preference among patients to discuss their prognosis and be involved in end-of-life decision making if seriously ill, only 42% of patients had discussed their end-of-life wishes with anyone. Few parents recounted having such discussions. Preferences regarding the timing and nature of end-of-life decision-making discussions varied. CONCLUSIONS Although young people are involved in the decision to pursue heart transplantation, little attention is paid to involving them in discussions regarding end-of-life decision making in a manner that is consistent with individual preferences.

Abstract
Parents are important for the development and maintenance of regulatory control. The current longitudinal study examined associations between parental coercion and autonomy support and impulse control in 117 youth (ages 8-16; Mage= 12.87, SD=2.53; 44% male) with Type 1 diabetes and explored whether youth negative affect mediated these associations. Parental coercion (but not autonomy support) was concurrently associated with lower impulse control and higher negative affect within individuals. Increases in youth negative affect partially mediated the within-person association between parental coercion and impulse control. These findings suggest that parent-directed interventions to reduce parental coercion may be most beneficial for impulse control if combined with youth-directed interventions to help them regulate negative affect. Replication of the current findings in a larger sample of youth with and without a chronic illness is needed to address the theoretical and empirical importance of negative affect as a potential mechanism through which parental coercion impacts youth impulsivity.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of the article was to explore the longitudinal relationship between treatment responsibility and type 1 diabetes management (i.e., adherence and glycemic control) in adolescence and to examine whether indicators of cognitive and psychosocial maturity moderate the link between youth responsibility and diabetes outcomes. METHODS Participants included 117 youth with type 1 diabetes and their parents. Youth (aged 8-16 years) and parents were assessed five times over 2 years. Using a cohort sequential design, we estimated the growth trajectory of adherence and glycemic control (i.e., hemoglobin A1c [HbA1c]) from age 8 to 18 years. Treatment responsibility, verbal ability, and impulse control were used as predictors of within-person variability and between-person differences in the growth parameters (i.e., intercept and slope). RESULTS Adherence and HbA1c declined linearly from ages 8 to 18 years. Significant within-person interactions between impulse control and responsibility revealed that on occasions when youth experienced increases in both responsibility and impulse control, adherence and HbA1c were higher than would be predicted by the age-related trajectory. For adherence only, when youth acquired more responsibility, without experiencing contemporaneous gains in impulse control, adherence worsened. For glycemic control only, a significant within-person interaction indicated that time-specific increases in both youth responsibility and verbal capacity were associated with a concurrent decline in HbA1c. CONCLUSIONS The present findings underscore that the associations between treatment responsibility and diabetes management depend on youths' maturational context. Intervention efforts to enhance impulse control skills in youth with diabetes may prevent the decline in diabetes management that tends to occur as youth acquire more responsibility for diabetes-related tasks.

Abstract
Decision-making is important in the context of pediatric chronic illness because children and families need to make decisions about burdensome and complex treatments on a regular basis, and children must eventually learn how to make such decisions independently. Research related to children's decision-making in medical settings has been focused primarily on cognitive aspects of decision-making, such as understanding and capacity. The concept of decision-making involvement (DMI) recognizes that children can be involved in decision-making in multiple ways, regardless of capacity, and that parents and health care providers play a critical role in supporting children as they learn to make decisions on their own. Providers can facilitate DMI during medical encounters by asking for the children's opinions and concerns, encouraging turn-taking, soliciting questions, asking for information directly from the children, and checking that the children understand what has been said. Efforts to involve children send the message that the youth perspective is important and set the expectation for increased participation over time. Providers can also support parent-child decision-making about illness management at home by guiding parents as to how best to involve children in decisions about illness management, identifying areas in which more or less parental guidance and support are needed, and assisting youth in planning ahead for decision-making about illness management in high-risk situations. Additional research is needed to identify why children's DMI in medical settings remains low, develop and evaluate strategies to enhance DMI, and test the effects of DMI on health-related behaviors and outcomes over time.
