Abstract
Type 2 diabetes with hyperuricaemia may lead to gout, kidney damage, hypertension, coronary heart disease, etc., further aggravating the condition of diabetes as well as adding to the medical and financial burden. To construct a risk model for hyperuricaemia in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus based on artificial neural network, and to evaluate the effectiveness of the risk model to provide directions for the prevention and control of the disease in this population. From June to December 2022, 8243 patients with type 2 diabetes were recruited from six community service centers for questionnaire and physical examination. Secondly, the collected data were used to select suitable variables and based on the comparison results, logistic regression was used to screen the variable characteristics. Finally, three risk models for evaluating the risk of hyperuricaemia in type 2 diabetes mellitus were developed using an artificial neural network algorithm and evaluated for performance. A total of eleven factors affecting the development of hyperuricaemia in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus in this study, including gender, waist circumference, diabetes medication use, diastolic blood pressure, γ-glutamyl transferase, blood urea nitrogen, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, fasting glucose and estimated glomerular filtration rate. Among the generated models, baseline & biochemical risk model had the best performance with cutoff, area under the curve, accuracy, recall, specificity, positive likelihood ratio, negative likelihood ratio, precision, negative predictive value, KAPPA and F1-score were 0.488, 0.744, 0.689, 0.625, 0.749, 2.489, 0.501, 0.697, 0.684, 0.375 and 0.659. In addition, its Brier score was 0.169 and the calibration curve also showed good agreement between fitting and observation. The constructed artificial neural network model has better efficacy and facilitates the reduction of the harm caused by type 2 diabetes mellitus combined with hyperuricaemia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It is widely recognized that ambient air pollution can induce various detrimental health outcomes. However, evidence linking ambient air pollutants and hyperuricemia incidence is scarce. OBJECTIVES To assess the association between long-term air pollution exposure and the risk of hyperuricemia. METHODS In this study, a total of 5854 government employees without hyperuricemia were recruited and followed up from January 2018 to June 2021 in Hunan Province, China. Hyperuricemia was defined as serum uric acid (SUA) level of >420 μmol/L for men and >360 μmol/L for women or use of SUA-lowering medication or diagnosed as hyperuricemia during follow-up. Data from local air quality monitoring stations were used to calculate individual exposure levels of PM10, PM2.5, SO2 and NO2 by inverse distance weightingn (IDW) method. Cox proportional hazard model was applied to evaluate the causal relationships between air pollutant exposures and the risk of hyperuricemia occurrence after adjustment for potential confounders and meanwhile, restricted cubic spline was used to explore the dose-response relationships. RESULTS The results indicated that exposures to PM10 (hazard ratio, HR = 1.042, 95% conficence interal, 95% CI: 1.028, 1.057), PM2.5 (HR = 1.204, 95% CI: 1.141, 1.271) and NO2 (HR = 1.178, 95% CI: 1.125,1.233) were associated with an increased HR of hyperuricemia. In addition, a nonlinear dose-response relationship was found between PM10 exposure level and the HR of hyperuricemia (p for nonlinearity = 0.158) with a potential threshold of 50.11 μg/m3. Subgroup analysis demonstrated that participants usually waking up at night and using natural ventilation were more vulnerable to the exposures of PM10, PM2.5, NO2, and SO2. CONCLUSION Long-term exposures to ambient PM10, PM2.5 and NO2 are associated with an increased incidence of hyperuricemia among Chinese government employees.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purposes of the study were to investigate the detailed association of serum uric acid (SUA) with visceral fat area (VFA) and body fat percentage (BFP) as calculated by bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) and build non-invasive diagnosis models of hyperuricaemia by combining obesity-related indicators, age and sex. METHOD A total of 19 343 adults were included. Multivariable regression analysis models were employed to analyse the association of SUA with VFA and BFP. Receiver operating characteristic curves were generated to diagnose hyperuricaemia in adults. RESULTS After fully adjusting for covariates, SUA was positively associated with VFA, BFP and body mass index (BMI) with βs of 0.447, 2.522 and 4.630 (95% CI= (0.412 to 0.482), (2.321 to 2.723) and (4.266 to 4.994)). After stratification by gender, this association persists (p<0.001). Fitted smoothing curves identified non-linear relationships between SUA and both VFA and BMI after full adjustment in males (inflection points: 93.9 cm2 and 30.9 kg/m2). A non-linear relationship also exists between SUA and BFP in females (inflection point: 34.5%). A combined model incorporating BFP, BMI, age and sex exhibited the best ability to diagnose hyperuricaemia (AUC (area under the curve) =0.805, specificity=0.602, sensitivity=0.878). For normal-weight and lean populations, individuals with hyperuricaemia tended to have higher levels of VFA and BFP in females and males, respectively (p<0.001). The combination of VFA, BFP, BMI, age and sex exhibited the best ability to diagnose hyperuricaemia in normal-weight and lean populations (AUC=0.803, specificity=0.671, sensitivity=0.836). CONCLUSION VFA and BFP are independent factors associated with SUA. In males, SUA shows a non-linear relationship with VFA and BMI. In females, SUA and BFP exhibit a non-linear relationship. In normal-weight and lean individuals, the accumulation of VFA and BFP may be involved in hyperuricaemia. VFA and BFP were helpful in diagnosing hyperuricaemia in adults, especially for normal-weight and lean populations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cognitive impairment is one of the major symptoms of individuals with bipolar disorder (BD). Purine system disorders may play an important role in cognitive dysfunction. So far, the relationship between cognitive deficits and purinergic metabolism in BD has been seldom discussed in previous studies. This study aims to explore its relevance and potential biological mechanisms. METHODS In this cross-sectional study, 205 first time diagnosed drug-naive individuals with BD and 97 healthy volunteers were recruited. The uric acid(UA) level was measured using automatic biochemical analyzer, and cognitive function was assessed by Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS) and Stroop color-word test. In addition, general information and clinical symptoms were collected and evaluated. RESULTS In this study, the UA level of BD group (U = 8475.000, p = 0.038) was found to be significantly higher than that of the healthy controls, but the scores of RBANS (t = -11.302, p < 0.001) and Stroop color-word test (t = -6.962, p < 0.001) were significantly lower than that of the healthy controls. In gender subgroup analysis, females had lower UA level and higher RBANS scores. In correlation analysis, the cognitive function of individuals with BD was found to present a significant negative correlation with UA level in attention (r = -0.23, p = 0.001) and delayed memory(r = -0.16, p = 0.022). LIMITATIONS This is a cross-sectional design. CONCLUSION Elevated UA levels may be a potential mechanism of cognitive impairment in BD. This provides a new possible strategy for the prevention and treatment of cognitive impairment in BD.

Abstract
Adiposity and alcohol consumption are reported to be associated with a higher level of serum uric acid (SUA), but whether their effect differs on SUA percentile distribution is still unclear. In this study, we aimed to investigate how alcohol intake and body fat percentage (%BF) integrated with body mass index (BMI) influence the distribution of SUA in Chinese adults. Data from the China National Health Survey (CNHS) which included adults from 10 provinces of China were used (n = 31,746, aged 20–80 years, 40% male). %BF and BMI were integrated into eight expanded body composition groups to understand how excess body adiposity affects the distribution of SUA in the populational level. Self-report alcohol intake information was collected by face-to-face questionnaire interview. Quantile regression (QR) was used to analyze the data. We found that adiposity and alcohol consumption were associated with SUA, especially at the upper percentile in both sexes. In obese men, the QR coefficients at the 75th and 95th percentiles were 74.0 (63.1–84.9) and 80.9 (52.5–109.3) μmol/L, respectively. The highest quartile of %BF in men had a 92.6 (79.3–105.9) μmol/L higher SUA levels at its 95th percentile than the 5th quartile (p < 0.001). Compared with normal or underweight with the lowest %BF group (NWBF1), the obesity-highest %BF group (OBBF4) had the strongest positive effect on SUA, especially at the higher percentile of SUA. In BMI-defined normal or underweight participants, a higher quartile of %BF had greater effect size in all SUA percentiles. In men, current alcohol drinking had the strongest effect at the 95th percentile of SUA (QR coefficient: 31.8, with 95% CI: 22.6–41.0) comparing with 14.5, 95% CI of 8.4 to 20.6 in the 5th SUA percentile. High risk of alcohol consumption had a greater effect on SUA, especially in the higher SUA percentile. The observation of stronger association at the higher percentile of SUA suggests that decreasing body adiposity and alcohol intake at the populational level may shift the upper tails of the SUA distributions to lower values, thereby reducing the incidence of hyperuricemia.

Abstract
Reproductive factors have been demonstrated to be associated with hyperuricemia. Body composition is an essential determinant influencing serum uric acid (SUA), but it is largely unknown whether increased SUA was influenced by changed body composition during the menopausal transition. As a secondary analysis of China National Health Survey from 2012-to 2017, this study included 18,997 women aged 20 to 80. Menarche age and menopause information were collected by questionnaire interview. Body mass index (BMI), body fat percentage (BFP), fat mass index (FMI), and fat-free mass index (FFMI) were used as body composition indexes. Hyperuricemia was defined as SUA higher than 360μmol/L (approximately 6 mg/dl). Mediation analysis was performed to explore the direct and indirect effects of menopause on hyperuricemia. A 1:2 age-matched case-control data set (n=6202) was designed to control age-related confounders and was used in multivariable analyses. After adjustment of covariates, postmenopausal women had 14.08 (10.89-17.27) μmol/L higher SUA than their premenopausal counterparts. Overweight/obesity and higher levels of BFP, FMI, and FFMI were all found to be positively associated with hyperuricemia. The mediation analysis showed that the total effect of menopause on hyperuricemia was positive, but was substantially mediated by body composition indexes. Forty-five percent of the total effect can be attributed to the indirect effect mediated by BMI (OR for the natural indirect effect (NIE): 1.09, 95%CI: 1.04-1.13), and over 80% mediated by BFP (OR for NIE: 1.23, 95%CI: 1.16-1.29). However, FFMI did not present the mediated role in the association (OR for NIE: 0.99, 95%CI: 0.96-1.02). The findings revealed that body composition, especially the fat mass indexes, significantly mediated the association between menopause and hyperuricemia. The role of body composition as mediator constitutes clinical and public health significance that should be recognized and considered in healthcare for women experiencing their menopause transition.

Association between female reproductive factors and gout: a nationwide population-based cohort study of 1 million postmenopausal women. Arthritis Res Ther 2021; 23:304. Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies have shown that the incidence and risk factors of gout differs according to sex. However, little research has been done on the association between reproductive factors and gout. We conducted an analysis of a large nationwide population-based cohort of postmenopausal women to determine whether there is an association between reproductive factors and the incidence of gout. METHODS A total of 1,076,378 postmenopausal women aged 40-69 years who participated in national health screenings in 2009 were included in the study. The outcome was the occurrence of incident gout, which was defined using the ICD-10 code of gout (M10) in the claim database. Cox proportional hazard models were used for the analyses and stratified analyses according to body mass index (BMI) and the presence/absence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) were performed. RESULTS The mean follow-up duration was 8.1 years, and incident cases of gout were 64,052 (incidence rate 7.31 per 1000 person-years). Later menarche, earlier menopause, and a shorter reproductive span were associated with a high risk of gout. No association between parity and gout incidence was observed. Use of oral contraceptives (OC) and hormone replacement therapy (HRT) were associated with an increased risk of gout. The association between reproductive factors and gout was not statistical significant in the high BMI group. The effects of OC and HRT usage on gout were not significant in the CKD group. CONCLUSION Shorter exposure to endogenous estrogen was associated with a high risk of gout. Conversely, exposure to exogenous estrogen such as OC and HRT was associated with an increased risk of gout.

Abstract
Background: Uric acid is one of natural antioxidants in human body. There have been several studies on the correlation between uric acid with oxidative stress and osteoporosis. However, the data are insufficient and results are controversial. In this regard, we determined the association between uric acid levels and bone mineral density (BMD) during the postmenopausal period. Methods: We analyzed data from 328 postmenopausal women (mean age, 57.3 ± 6.5 years; mean serum uric acid level, 4.6 ± 1.0 mg/dL). The participants were divided into three groups based on tertiles of the serum uric acid level. The participants receiving hormone replacement therapy (HRT), bisphosphonates, or lipid-lowering agents were included. Results: Blood urea nitrogen, serum creatinine, and serum triglyceride levels were significantly higher in the upper tertiles of uric acid levels. No significant difference was found in the mean uric acid levels between medication users and non-users. Each HRT regimen had a different mean serum uric acid level. A cross-sectional analysis showed no significant correlation between the serum uric acid levels and BMD in the spine and femoral neck (spine BMD: 1.050 ± 0.131, 1.060 ± 0.160, 1.084 ± 0.140, p = 0.22; femoral neck BMD: 0.837 ± 0.110, 0.849 ± 0.096, 0.863 ± 0.115, p = 0.28 for each tertile of uric acid). Longitudinal analysis of data from 186 women with follow-up examinations at a mean interval of 14.6 months also revealed no difference in reduction in both spine and femoral neck BMD between tertile groups of serum uric acid (the median BMD reduction for spine: −0.02, 0.01, −0.04, p = 0.95; the median BMD reduction for femoral neck: 0.008, 0.005, −0.003, p = 0.34). Conclusions: Serum uric acid level is not associated with BMD in postmenopausal women.

Abstract
Uric acid (UA) is the end metabolic product of purine metabolism. Early on, UA was considered to be a metabolite with a certain antioxidant capacity. As research has progressed, other properties of UA have been explored, and its association with many diseases has been found. The association between UA and kidney disease and cardiovascular disease is well established; however, there is still a paucity of reviews on the association between UA and the female reproductive system. An increasing number of epidemiological studies have shown elevated serum UA levels in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), endometriosis, etc. Additionally, serum UA can be used as a predictor of pregnancy complications and adverse foetal outcomes. An increasing number of animal experiments and clinical studies have revealed possible mechanisms related to the involvement of UA in certain female reproductive disorders: oxidative stress, chronic inflammation, mitochondrial dysfunction, etc. This article reviews the current mainstream mechanisms regarding the pathogenesis of UA and the role of UA in certain specific female reproductive disorders (direct involvement in the development of certain diseases or enhancement of other risk factors) in the hope of contributing to clinical prevention, diagnosis, treatment and improvement in prognosis.

Abstract
(Background) Hyperuricemia is associated with hypertension, vascular disease, cardiovascular events, and renal dysfunction. Several studies have reported the relationship between serum uric acid (UA) level and clinical outcome in the general population. However, most such studies have not quantitatively evaluated the association between UA and age, body mass index (BMI), and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). (Method) From April 2015 to March 2016, a total 10,133 healthy individuals underwent multiphasic screening at our medical checkup center. Among all participants, eGFR was evaluated in 1,684 men and 1,195 women. The data of this cohort were reviewed and analyzed. (Results) The median age of men and women was 51.0 and 50.0 years, respectively. Median serum UA was 6.1 mg/dL in men and 4.5 mg/dL in women. The prevalence of hyperuricemia was 23.9% in men and 8.5% in women. In all 10-year age groups, men had significantly higher serum UAs than women. In men, no significant differences of serum UA were observed among 10-year age groups. Menopause-associated increases in serum UA among women were observed. Men in their 20s to 50s and women in their 30s to 60s showed significant differences in serum UA between each BMI category in the same age decade. Both men and women in their 40s to 60s showed significant differences in serum UA between each eGFR category in the same age decade. We used the results of multiple regression analysis to derive equations to predict the associations among these variables, as follows: men, UA (mg/dL) = 5.637+0.065 × (BMI) - 0.014 × (eGFR) (R2 = 0.059, P < 0.0001); women < 50 years old, UA (mg/dL) = 4.068+0.065 × (BMI) - 0.014 × (eGFR) (R2 = 0.091, P < 0.0001) and women > 50 years old, UA (mg/dL) = 4.311+0.075 × (BMI) - 0.017 × (eGFR) (R2 = 0.116, P < 0.0001). (Conclusions) We present epidemiological evidence indicating that the levels of serum UA vary with BMI and eGFR in both sexes. In women, it should be recognized that menopause is independently associated with higher levels of UA.

Abstract
To evaluate the association between ambient air pollution and hyperuricemia, we prospectively followed 1748 traffic police officers without hyperuricemia at baseline (2009-2014) from 11 districts in Guangzhou, China. We calculated six-year average PM10, SO2 and NO2 concentrations using data collected from air monitoring stations. The hazard ratios for hyperuricemia per 10 µg/m3 increase in air pollutants were 1.46 (95% CI: 1.28-1.68) for PM10, 1.23 (95% CI: 1.00-1.51) for SO2, and 1.43 (95% CI: 1.26-1.61) for NO2. We also identified changes in the ratio of serum uric acid to serum creatinine concentrations (ua/cre) per 10 µg/m3 increase in air pollutants as 11.54% (95% CI: 8.14%-14.93%) higher for PM10, 5.09% (95% CI: 2.76%-7.42%) higher for SO2, and 5.13% (95% CI: 2.35%-7.92%) higher for NO2, respectively. Long-term exposure to ambient air pollution was associated with a higher incidence of hyperuricemia and an increase in ua/cre among traffic police officers.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Uric acid (UA) is increasingly recognized as having important physiological roles and associated with several peripheral and central pathophysiological outcomes, and might play a role in eating disorders (ED) pathogenesis. We investigated whether UA levels are altered among adolescents with ED. METHODS Morning salivary UA concentrations were compared between adolescents referred to treatment at the Herman Dana Center receiving a DSM-V diagnosis of an ED and matched healthy controls. RESULTS Salivary UA was significantly elevated among ED compared with control values (ED mean 3.9 ± 1.2 mg/dl, control mean 2.9 ± 1.9 mg/dl, t = - 3.13 df = 81, p = 0.003). DISCUSSION Salivary UA is elevated among adolescents with ED. Further studies are required to replicate and extend this finding and evaluate its generalizability as a state or trait marker as regards ED subtypes, other body fluids (plasma and cerebrospinal fluid), and recovery or premorbid stages, as well as its putative mechanistic relevance to ED. Abstract
INTRODUCTION Elevated serum uric acid (SUA) is associated with cardiovascular risk factors, which often contribute to dementia and dementia-like morbidity, yet several cross-sectional studies have shown protective associations with cognition, which would be consistent with other work showing benefits of elevated SUA through its antioxidant properties. METHODS We studied 11,169 participants free of dementia and cardiovascular disease from the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) cohort. SUA was measured in blood samples collected in 1990-92, baseline for this study (age range 47-70 years). Incident dementia was ascertained based on clinical assessments in 2011-13 and 2016-17, surveillance based on dementia screeners conducted over telephone interviews, hospitalization discharge codes, and death certificates. Cognitive function was assessed up to four times between 1990 and 92 and 2016-17. We estimated the association of SUA, categorized into quartiles, with incidence of dementia using Cox regression models adjusting for potential confounders. The association between cognitive decline and SUA was assessed using generalized estimating equations. RESULTS Over a median follow-up period of 24.1 years, 2005 cases of dementia were identified. High baseline SUA was associated with incident dementia (HR, 1.29; 95% CI, 1.12, 1.47) when adjusted for sociodemographic variables. However, after further adjustment including cardiovascular risk factors, this relationship disappeared (HR, 1.03; 95% CI, 0.88, 1.21). Elevated baseline SUA was associated with faster cognitive decline even after further adjustment (25-year global z-score difference, -0.149; 95% CI, -0.246, -0.052). CONCLUSION Higher levels of mid-life SUA were associated with faster cognitive decline, but not necessarily with higher risk of dementia.

Abstract
This study aimed to determine the association between serum uric acid (sUA) and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in nonobese postmenopausal women. A total of 4323 female individuals over 18 years of age participated in this cross-sectional study. The subjects were divided into four groups according to menopause status and body mass index. sUA quartiles in this female population were categorized as follows: Q1 ≤ 230 mmol/L, Q2: 231–270 mmol/L, Q3: 271–310 mmol/L and Q4: ≥ 311 mmol/L. The presence or absence of NAFLD was assessed by abdominal ultrasonography. The prevalence of NAFLD was 38.8% in the general population, and the average age was 46.5 ± 11.3 years. Among nonobese and obese subjects, the prevalence of NAFLD was lower in nonmenopausal subjects than in postmenopausal subjects (nonobese: 20.74% vs 45.26%, respectively, P < 0.0001; obese: 70.51% vs 84.35%, respectively, P < 0.0001). After adjusting for age, current smoking status, current alcohol drinking status, diabetes, hypertension disease and triglyceride, the ORs (95% CIs) for NAFLD among individuals in Q2-Q4 were 1.518 (1.062–2.169), 1.431 (1.010–2.027) and 2.054 (1.442–2.927), respectively, P value for trend <0.0001. Higher sUA levels can be used as a predictive biomarker for NAFLD in nonobese postmenopausal women.

Abstract
Oxidative stress has long been implicated in the pathophysiology and progression of Huntington's disease (HD). Uric acid (UA) is a naturally occurring antioxidant that is present in the brain and periphery. Growing evidence has implicated UA as a molecular biomarker for several neurodegenerative diseases, most notably Parkinson's disease (PD). In this study, we investigated UA levels in clinical samples from HD patients and normal controls (NCs) and assessed potential relationships between UA levels and disease and clinical data. UA levels were measured in plasma (n = 107) and saliva (n = 178) samples from premanifest (pre-HD) and manifest HD patients and control subjects. Gender effects of UA levels were observed in both biofluids, with male patients showing higher UA levels compared to female patients. Comparisons of UA levels across diagnostic groups, separated by gender, revealed that both plasma and salivary UA levels were significantly lower in female pre-HD and manifest HD patients compared to NCs. Salivary levels of UA were also significantly lower in male manifest HD patients versus controls, but not in plasma. Correlations of peripheral UA levels to clinical data also showed differences according to gender. In male HD patients, both plasma and salivary UA levels were significantly negatively correlated with total functional capacity (TFC), while positive correlations were observed with total motor score (TMS). Female HD patients showed a significant positive correlation between plasma UA levels and TMS, while salivary UA levels from female patients were significantly correlated to disease burden. Finally, in a separate cohort, we show that UA levels are decreased in postmortem prefrontal cortical samples (n = 20) from HD subjects compared to matched controls. These findings suggest that decreased levels of UA in the brains of HD patients can be reflected in peripheral fluids, with salivary measures of UA particularly offering significant promise as a potentially relevant, non-invasive biomarker of disease symptoms and burden. Our findings further highlight the impact of sexual dimorphism in HD pathophysiology.

Abstract
Introduction: In assessing the development of hyperuricemia in diabetic adults, the role of the sex steroid axis is underappreciated. Furthermore, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) has been recommended as a nutritional supplement. However, is DHEA suitable for diabetic adults with hyperuricemia? This issue has received little attention. Aim: The objective of this study was to investigate the associations between gonadal hormones and uric acid (UA) levels in diabetic adults, paying particular attention to the association between DHEA and UA levels. Methods: We analyzed 4,426 participants out of 4,813 diabetic adults enrolled from seven communities in a cross-sectional survey conducted in 2018. Participants underwent several examinations, including assessments of anthropometric parameters, blood pressure, glucose, lipid profiles, UA, total testosterone (TT), estradiol (E2), the follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), the luteinizing hormone (LH), and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA). Results: Among men and compared with individuals in the first quartile, participants in the fourth quartile of TT and FSH had odds of hyperuricemia that were significantly decreased by so much as 48 and 34%, respectively (both P < 0.05). However, participants in the fourth quartile of DHEA had 79% increased odds of hyperuricemia (P < 0.05). Among postmenopausal women, participants in the fourth quartile of DHEA, TT, and LH had odds of hyperuricemia that were significantly increased by 155, 99, and 76%, respectively (all P < 0.05). These associations were adjusted for potential confounding factors. Conclusions: Sex differences were found in the associations between gonadal hormones and UA levels in diabetic men and postmenopausal women, which should be monitored to prevent hyperuricemia when sex hormone treatment, especially DHEA, is administered. Further studies are needed.

Background
Higher serum uric acid (UA) levels are associated with poorer renal prognosis. In kidney transplantation, both donors and recipients are diagnosed as having chronic kidney diseases (CKD) based on renal function; however, their UA levels slightly vary. Elucidating the differences in UA would help improve kidney prognosis, especially for recipients. Therefore, we investigated UA levels in kidney transplant recipients by comparing them to those in their donors.
Methods
In this retrospective cross-sectional survey, background information and blood examination results were collected from the donors just before donation and after transplantation in the donors and recipients. Associations between UA and sex estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), and body mass index (BMI) were evaluated. Data were assessed by the Wilcoxon rank-sum test for continuous variables and the chi-squared test for categorical variables; multiple linear regression analyses were performed to determine which factors were associated with renal function before and after transplantation.
Results
Participant characteristics were as follows. The mean donor age (n = 45, 16 men and 29 women) was 55 ± 11 years, and the mean recipient age (n = 45, 25 men and 20 women) was 46 ± 16 years. Sex-related differences (UA levels in men were predominant) existed in the UA of donors before (P < 0.001) and after donation (P < 0.001). Conversely, there were no significant sex-related differences in the UA of recipients (P = 0.51); the mean standardized eGFRs were similar in donors and recipients after transplantation. Multivariate linear regression analysis showed donor UA only correlated with donor sex before donation (P = 0.008). After donation, donor UA was associated with donor sex (P = 0.006), eGFR (P < 0.001), and BMI (P = 0.02). Notably, the UA of recipients after transplantation was only associated with eGFR (P = 0.003).
Conclusions
Sex has less impact on UA in recipients than in donors. UA has a greater impact on renal prognosis in women than men, even at the same UA level. Therefore, attention should be given to UA levels in female recipients. These findings can be useful for determining patient prognosis following kidney transplantation in both donors and recipients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Coffee is one of the world's most consumed beverages, and its consumption is increasing. Serum uric acid levels are affected by dietary factors, and increased levels can cause a variety of diseases, including gout. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between coffee consumption and serum uric acid levels in the general Korean population. METHODS A nationwide cross-sectional study was conducted using data from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey in 2016. A total of 3005 participants who checked serum uric acid levels and a completed coffee consumption survey were included (1146 men and 1859 women). The amount of coffee consumption was examined via self-reporting and categorized as none, <1 cup, 1-2 cups, 2-5 cups, and ≥5 cups of coffee consumed daily. RESULTS The mean serum uric acid level of the men was 5.91 ± 1.24 mg/dL and that of women was 4.29 ± 0.97 mg/dL. In the multiple linear regression analysis, there were no significant differences in the serum uric acid levels between the non-coffee-drinking group and the coffee-drinking group (<1 cup, 1-2 cups, 2-5 cups, and ≥5 cups of coffee) in both men and women (P = .569, .258, .466, and .751, respectively, in men; .185, .520, .116, and .302, respectively, in women). CONCLUSIONS There was no significant relationship between coffee consumption and serum uric acid levels in the general Korean population.

Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the association between serum uric acid (SUA) levels with CKD in elderly health checkup population and explore the gender difference. Methods: A total of 4242 subjects were included in the cross-sectional study. All of the subjects participated in the annual checkup between June 2016 and June 2017. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) was defined by estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) <60 ml/min per 1.73 m2. We examined the association between SUA levels and CKD. Multivariate binary logistic regression analysis was used to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CIs) by comparing association between the SUA level and CKD. The models were adjusted for age, gender, body mass index (BMI), hypertension, diabetes, triglyceride and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). Result: The prevalence of hyperuricemia was 22.2%, and it was significantly higher in male than in female (25.2% vs. 17%, p < .001). The prevalence of hyperuricemia increased with age, especially in the female. The prevalence of CKD was 27.8% in male and 20.2% in female (p < .001). Compared with the SUA first quartile, the multivariate-adjusted odds for CKD of fourth quartiles were 6.05 (95%CI: 4.32–8.49) in male and 8.21(95%CI: 5.37–12.54) in female. Conclusion: Our finding showed gender-specific differences in the association between high SUA and an increased risk of CKD in the elderly population. The association of SUA and CKD was independent of other potential confounding factors including age, glucose, hypertension, HDL, TG and BMI.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The objective of this study is to observe if mild hyperuricemia and a high-fructose diet influence the cardiovascular and metabolic systems in hypogonadic female Wistar rats compared to normogonadic female rats. METHODS Fifty-six (56) adult female Wistar rats were used in the present work. Animals were divided into two groups: normogonadic (NGN) and hypogonadic (HGN). These groups were also divided into four subgroups in accordance with the treatment: control with only water (C), fructose (F), oxonic acid (OA), and fructose + oxonic acid (FOA). Lipid profile, glycemia, uric acid, and creatinine determinations were assessed. Cardiovascular changes were evaluated by measuring blood pressure, myocyte volume, fibrosis, and intima-media aortic thickness. RESULTS HGN rats had higher levels of total cholesterol (TC) (p < 0.01) and noHDLc (p < 0.01), in addition to higher levels of uric acid (p < 0.05). The OA group significantly increased myocyte volume (p < 0.0001) and the percentage of fibrosis as well as the group receiving FOA (p < 0.001) in both gonadal conditions, being greater in the HGN group. Hypogonadic animals presented a worse lipid profile. CONCLUSION Mild hyperuricemia produces hypertension together with changes in the cardiac hypertrophy, fibrosis, and increased thickness of the intima media in hypogonadic rats fed high-fructose diet.
