Abstract
BACKGROUND Loneliness is a powerful stressor for depression in older adults, and resilience and social support may mediate this relationship, while the evidence is limited. Hence, our study aims to explore the mediating role of social support and resilience between loneliness and depression and to test possible moderators. METHODS We searched 12 databases without language and publish time restrictions and obtained the correlation coefficients. This review constructed two-stage meta-analytical structural equality modeling (MASEA) to test the mediating effect of social support and resilience. Additionally, use one-stage MASEA to test the moderator effect of women proportion, published year, and country of study. RESULTS This study included 53 studies and 40, 929 older adults. Loneliness directly affected depression (β = 0.28, 95 % CI: 0.20, 0.36). Social support (β = 0.06, 95 % CI: 0.02, 0.09) and resilience (β = 0.15, 95 % CI: 0.12, 0.18) mediated the relationship. The proportion of women in the sample was moderator (χ2(5) = 11.10, p = 0.05). When the proportion exceeded 60 %, the path coefficient of loneliness and social support (β = -0.45, SE = 0.055) was larger than that of the subgroup below 60 % (β = -0.32, SE = 0.041). LIMITATIONS It was indefinite whether the evidence would be supported in longitudinal designs. Influenced by the original research data, it is impossible to calculate the model parameters of gender discrepancy. CONCLUSIONS Health aging policy-makers adopting social support and resilience intervention will help strengthen the coping skills of older adults confronting loneliness and reduce the risk of depression.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The prospective association between sleep duration and the development of late-life depressive symptomology is unclear. AIMS To investigate sleep duration from midlife to late life in relation to risk of depressive symptoms in late life. METHOD A total of 14 361 participants from the Singapore Chinese Health Study were included in the present study. Daily sleep duration was self-reported at baseline (mean age of 52.4 years; 1993-98), follow-up 2 (mean age of 65.2 years; 2006-10) and follow-up 3 (mean age of 72.5 years; 2014-16) interviews. Depressive symptoms were evaluated using the Geriatric Depression Scale at follow-up 3 interviews. Modified Poisson regression models were performed to estimate relative risks and 95% confidence intervals of late-life depressive symptoms in relation to sleep duration at baseline and the two follow-up interviews. RESULTS Compared with sleeping 7 h per day, a short sleep duration of ≤5 h per day at baseline (i.e. midlife) was related to a higher risk of depressive symptoms (relative risk 1.10, 95% CI 1.06-1.15), and this risk was not affected by subsequent prolongation of sleep. Conversely, a long sleep duration of ≥9 h per day at baseline was not related to risk of depressive symptoms. At follow-up 3 (i.e. late life), both short sleep (relative risk 1.20, 95% CI 1.16-1.25) and long sleep (relative risk 1.12, 95% CI 1.07-1.18) duration were cross-sectionally associated with depressive symptoms. CONCLUSION Short sleep duration in midlife, regardless of subsequent prolongation, is associated with an increased risk of depression in late life. Contrariwise, both short and long sleep duration in late life co-occur with depressive symptoms.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The longitudinal course of late-life depression remains under-studied. AIMS To describe transitions along the depression continuum in old age and to identify factors associated with specific transition patterns. METHOD We analysed 15-year longitudinal data on 2745 dementia-free persons aged 60+ from the population-based Swedish National Study on Aging and Care in Kungsholmen. Depression (minor and major) was diagnosed according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, Text Revision; subsyndromal depression (SSD) was operationalised as the presence of ≥2 symptoms without depression. Multistate survival models were used to map depression transitions, including death, and to examine the association of psychosocial (social network, connection and support), lifestyle (smoking, alcohol consumption and physical activity) and clinical (somatic disease count) factors with transition patterns. RESULTS Over the follow-up, 19.1% had ≥1 transitions across depressive states, while 6.5% had ≥2. Each additional somatic disease was associated with a higher hazard of progression from no depression (No Dep) to SSD (hazard ratio 1.09; 1.07-1.10) and depression (Dep) (hazard ratio 1.06; 1.04-1.08), but also with a lower recovery (HRSSD-No Dep 0.95; 0.93-0.97 [where 'HR' refers to 'hazard ratio']; HRDep-No Dep 0.96; 0.93-0.99). Physical activity was associated with an increased hazard of recovery to no depression from SSD (hazard ratio 1.49; 1.28-1.73) and depression (hazard ratio 1.20; 1.00-1.44), while a richer social network was associated with both higher recovery from (HRSSD-No Dep 1.44; 1.26-1.66; HRDep-No Dep 1.51; 1.34-1.71) and lower progression hazards to a worse depressive state (HRNo Dep-SSD 0.81; 0.70-0.94; HRNo Dep-Dep 0.58; 0.46-0.73; HRSSD-Dep 0.66; 0.44-0.98). CONCLUSIONS Older people may present with heterogeneous depressive trajectories. Targeting the accumulation of somatic diseases and enhancing social interactions may be appropriate for both depression prevention and burden reduction, while promoting physical activity may primarily benefit recovery from depressive disorders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Observational studies suggested that immune system disorder is associated with depression. However, the causal association has not been fully elucidated. Thus, we aim to assess the causality of the associations of immune cell profiles with risk of depression through Mendelian randomization analysis. METHODS We extracted genetic variances of immune cell traits from a large publicly available genome-wide association study (GWAS) involving 3757 participants and depression from a GWAS containing 246,363 cases and 561,190 controls of European ancestry. Inverse variance weighting (IVW) was performed as the MR primary analysis. Simultaneously apply MR-Egger and weighted median as supplementary enhancements to the final result. We further performed heterogeneity and horizontal pleiotropy test to validate the main MR results. RESULTS Five immunophenotypes were identified to be significantly associated with depression risk: CD27 on IgD-CD38dimB cell (OR = 1.019, 95 % CI = 1.010-1.028, P = 1.24 × 10-5), CD45RA-CD4+T cell Absolute Count (OR = 0.974, 95 % CI = 0.962-0.986, P = 3.88 × 10-5), CD40 on CD14-CD16+monocyte (OR = 0.987, 95 % CI = 0.981-0.993, P = 2.1 × 10-4), CD27 on switched memory B cell (OR = 1.015, 95 % CI = 1.006-1.023, P = 2.6 × 10-4), CD27 on IgD-CD38-B cell (OR = 1.017, 95 % CI = 1.008-1.027, P = 3.1 × 10-4). CONCLUSION Our findings shed light on the intricate interaction pattern between the immune system and depression, offering a novel direction for researchers to investigate the underlying biological mechanisms of depression.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Epidemiological evidence of how midlife intake of fruits and vegetables affects the likelihood of depressive symptoms in late life remains limited and controversial. We examined this association in an Asian cohort. DESIGN Prospective population-based cohort study. SETTING Chinese living in Singapore. PARTICIPANTS A total of 13,738 adults from the Singapore Chinese Health Study. MEASUREMENTS The consumption of 14 fruits and 25 vegetables were assessed using a validated 165-item food-frequency questionnaire at baseline (1993-1998), when participants were aged 45-74 years (mean age 52.4 years). Depressive symptoms were evaluated using the Geriatric Depression Scale during the third follow-up interviews (2014-2016), when participants were aged 61-96 years (mean age 72.5 years), and depression was defined by ≥5 out of 15 scores. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to calculate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS After a mean follow-up of 19.6 years, depressive symptoms were identified among 3,180 participants. Consumption of fruits was inversely associated with the odds of depressive symptoms in a dose-response manner: comparing extreme quartiles, the OR (95% CI) of depressive symptoms was 0.71 (0.63-0.81; P-trend <0.01). Intake of several types of fruits, especially orange, tangerine, banana, papaya and watermelon, was associated with reduced odds, and this inverse association was similar across subgroups of fruits categorized by glycemic index. Conversely, intake of vegetables was not associated with the odds of depressive symptoms. CONCLUSIONS Our findings support population-based recommendation of having sufficient fruit intake early in life to reduce the likelihood of depressive symptoms in late life.

Abstract
Hippocampal neurogenesis (HN) occurs throughout the life course and is important for memory and mood. Declining with age, HN plays a pivotal role in cognitive decline (CD), dementia, and late-life depression, such that altered HN could represent a neurobiological susceptibility to these conditions. Pertinently, dietary patterns (e.g., Mediterranean diet) and/or individual nutrients (e.g., vitamin D, omega 3) can modify HN, but also modify risk for CD, dementia, and depression. Therefore, the interaction between diet/nutrition and HN may alter risk trajectories for these ageing-related brain conditions. Using a subsample (n = 371) of the Three-City cohort-where older adults provided information on diet and blood biobanking at baseline and were assessed for CD, dementia, and depressive symptomatology across 12 years-we tested for interactions between food consumption, nutrient intake, and nutritional biomarker concentrations and neurogenesis-centred susceptibility status (defined by baseline readouts of hippocampal progenitor cell integrity, cell death, and differentiation) on CD, Alzheimer's disease (AD), vascular and other dementias (VoD), and depressive symptomatology, using multivariable-adjusted logistic regression models. Increased plasma lycopene concentrations (OR [95% CI] = 1.07 [1.01, 1.14]), higher red meat (OR [95% CI] = 1.10 [1.03, 1.19]), and lower poultry consumption (OR [95% CI] = 0.93 [0.87, 0.99]) were associated with an increased risk for AD in individuals with a neurogenesis-centred susceptibility. Increased vitamin D consumption (OR [95% CI] = 1.05 [1.01, 1.11]) and plasma γ-tocopherol concentrations (OR [95% CI] = 1.08 [1.01, 1.18]) were associated with increased risk for VoD and depressive symptomatology, respectively, but only in susceptible individuals. This research highlights an important role for diet/nutrition in modifying dementia and depression risk in individuals with a neurogenesis-centred susceptibility.

Abstract
Background Global research hotspots and future research trends in the neurobiological mechanisms of late-life depression (LLD) as well as its diagnosis and treatment are not yet clear. Objectives This study profiled the current state of global research on LLD and predicted future research trends in the field. Methods Literature with the subject term LLD was retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection, and CiteSpace software was used to perform econometric and co-occurrence analyses. The results were visualized using CiteSpace, VOSviewer, and other software packages. Results In total, 10,570 publications were included in the analysis. Publications on LLD have shown an increasing trend since 2004. The United States and the University of California had the highest number of publications, followed consecutively by China and England, making these countries and institutions the most influential in the field. Reynolds, Charles F. was the author with the most publications. The International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry was the journal with the most articles and citations. According to the co-occurrence analysis and keyword/citation burst analysis, cognitive impairment, brain network dysfunction, vascular disease, and treatment of LLD were research hotspots. Conclusion Late-life depression has attracted increasing attention from researchers, with the number of publications increasing annually. However, many questions remain unaddressed in this field, such as the relationship between LLD and cognitive impairment and dementia, or the impact of vascular factors and brain network dysfunction on LLD. Additionally, the treatment of patients with LLD is currently a clinical challenge. The results of this study will help researchers find suitable research partners and journals, as well as predict future hotspots.

Abstract
Background Depressive symptoms and cognitive impairment often interact, rendering their associations controversial. To date, their joint trajectories and associations with dementia and death remain underexplored. Aims To explore the interactions between depressive symptoms and cognitive function, their developmental trajectories and the associations with all-cause dementia, Alzheimer's disease (AD) and all-cause death in older adults. Methods Data were from the Health and Retirement Study. Depressive symptoms and cognitive function were measured using the 8-item Centre for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale and the Telephone Interview of Cognitive Status, respectively. All-cause dementia and AD were defined by self-reported or proxy-reported physician diagnoses. All-cause death was determined by interviews. The restricted cubic spline, group-based trajectory modelling and subdistribution hazard regression were used. Results Significant interactions between depressive symptoms and cognitive function in 2010 in their association with new-onset all-cause dementia and AD from 2010 to 2020 were found, especially in women (p for interaction <0.05). Independent trajectory analysis showed that emerging or high (vs no) depressive trajectories and poor or rapidly decreased cognitive trajectories (vs very good) from 1996 to 2010 were at significantly higher risk of subsequent all-cause dementia, AD and all-cause death. 15 joint trajectories of depressive symptoms and cognitive function from 1996 to 2010 were determined, where rapidly decreased cognitive function was more common in those with no depressive symptoms. Compared with older adults with the trajectory of no depressive symptoms and very good cognitive function, those with the trajectory of no depressive symptoms but rapidly decreased cognitive function were much more likely to develop new-onset all-cause dementia and death, with subdistribution hazard ratios (95% confidence intervals) of 4.47 (2.99 to 6.67) and 1.84 (1.43 to 2.36), especially in women. Conclusions To effectively mitigate the risk of dementia and death, it is crucial to acknowledge the importance of preventing cognitive decline in older adults without depressive symptoms, particularly in women.

Abstract
Using the 2018-2021 National Health Interview Survey data, we examined the associations between healthcare cost burden and depressive/anxious feelings in older adults. Nearly12% reported healthcare cost burden and 18% daily/weekly depressive/anxious feelings. Healthcare cost burden was higher among women, racial/ethnic minorities, those with chronic illnesses, mobility impairment, and those with Medicare Part D, but lower among individuals with Medicare-Medicaid dual eligibility, Medicare Advantage, VA/military insurance, and private insurance. Daily/weekly depressive/anxious feelings was higher among healthcare cost burden reporters. The COVID-19 pandemic-related medical care access problems were also associated with a higher risk of reporting healthcare cost burden and depression/anxiety.

Abstract
AIMS Co-occurring somatic diseases exhibit complex clinical profiles, which can differentially impact the development of late-life depression. Within a community-based cohort, we aimed to explore the association between somatic disease burden, both in terms of the number of diseases and their patterns, and the incidence of depression in older people. METHODS We analysed longitudinal data of depression- and dementia-free individuals aged 60+ years from the population-based Swedish National Study on Aging and Care in Kungsholmen. Depression diagnoses were clinically ascertained following the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition Text Revision over a 15-year follow-up. Somatic disease burden was assessed at baseline through a comprehensive list of chronic diseases obtained by combining information from clinical examinations, medication reviews and national registers and operationalized as (i) disease count and (ii) patterns of co-occurring diseases from latent class analysis. The association of somatic disease burden with depression incidence was investigated using Cox models, accounting for sociodemographic, lifestyle and clinical factors. RESULTS The analytical sample comprised 2904 people (mean age, 73.2 [standard deviation (SD), 10.5]; female, 63.1%). Over the follow-up (mean length, 9.6 years [SD, 4 years]), 225 depression cases were detected. Each additional disease was associated with the occurrence of any depression in a dose-response manner (hazard ratio [HR], 1.16; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.08, 1.24). As for disease patterns, individuals presenting with sensory/anaemia (HR, 1.91; 95% CI: 1.03, 3.53), thyroid/musculoskeletal (HR, 1.90; 95% CI: 1.06, 3.39) and cardiometabolic (HR, 2.77; 95% CI: 1.40, 5.46) patterns exhibited with higher depression hazards, compared to those without 2+ diseases (multimorbidity). In the subsample of multimorbid individuals (85%), only the cardiometabolic pattern remained associated with a higher depression hazard compared to the unspecific pattern (HR, 1.71; 95% CI: 1.02, 2.84). CONCLUSIONS Both number and patterns of co-occurring somatic diseases are associated with an increased risk of late-life depression. Mental health should be closely monitored among older adults with high somatic burden, especially if affected by cardiometabolic multimorbidity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Geriatric depression increases the public health burden and health care costs, reduces quality of life. Studies have shown the association between ω-3 PUFAs levels and inflammatory markers levels and depression, but few have explored the relationship between omega-3 PUFAs, inflammatory markers, and cognitive function in geriatric depression. This study aimed to compare the differences in ω-3 PUFAs levels and inflammatory markers between geriatric depression with cognitive impairment (CI) and those without CI. METHODS A total of three hundred and five elderly patients were recruited. In addition to collecting basic information, their blood specimens were collected to detect serum EPA, DHA, AA, TC, LDL-C, IL-6, TNF-α, and hs-CRP levels. The Hamilton depression scale (HAMD), Hamilton anxiety scale (HAMA), and The Montreal cognitive assessment (MoCA) were used to assess their depression, anxiety, and cognitive function, respectively. RESULTS Compared to those without CI, geriatric depression patients with CI had higher serum TC, LDL-C levels, lower EPA, DHA, and AA levels, and more elevated IL-6, TNF-α, and hs-CRP levels (all P < 0.05). Further linear regression analysis showed that EPA, DHA, and TNF-α, hs-CRP levels were significantly associated with the occurrence and the severity of CI. LIMITATIONS No causal relationship could be drawn due to the cross-sectional design. CONCLUSIONS Omega-3 PUFAs and inflammatory factors levels may predict CI in elderly patients with MDD in the future. Our findings suggest that ω-3 PUFAs (EPA and DHA) and inflammatory factors (TNF-α and CRP) may predict the occurrence and the severity of CI among elderly MDD patients.

Abstract
Background and Objectives Physical health problems are a significant late-life suicide precipitant. This study's purpose was to examine differences in (i) other suicide precipitants and psychiatric/substance use problems, and (ii) suicide methods (firearms, hanging/suffocation, and poisoning) in 3 age groups (55-64, 65-74, and 75+) of older suicide decedents who had physical health problems as a suicide precipitant. Research Design and Methods Data came from the 2017-2019 U.S. National Violent Death Reporting System (N = 34,912; 27,761 males [79.5%] and 7,151 females [20.5%]). Generalized linear models for a Poisson distribution with a log link were used to examine the study questions. Results Physical health problems were a suicide precipitant for 25.8%, 41.9%, and 57.7% of the 55-64, 65-74, and 75+ age groups, respectively, and were associated with a higher likelihood of having had depressed mood (IRR = 1.38, 95% CI: 1.33-1.43) and other substance use problems (IRR = 1.22, 95% CI: 1.13-1.31). Interaction effects showed that when job/finance/housing problems, depressed mood, or any psychiatric disorders were co-present with physical health problems, the age group differences in the predicted rates of physical health problems were diminished. Physical health problems were also positively associated with firearm and poisoning use, but negatively associated with hanging/suffocation. Interaction effects indicated that the predicted rates of firearm and poisoning use significantly increased among those aged 55-64 with than without physical health problems. Discussion and Implications In all 3 age groups of older suicide decedents, physical health problems were the predominant suicide precipitant, and those with physical health problems had elevated depressed mood. Assessment of suicide risk, affordable and accessible health, and mental health services, restriction of access to lethal suicide methods, and policy-based suicide prevention approaches for older adults with physical health problems are needed.

Abstract
The literature has yet to fully account for sex differences in the symptomatology and measurement of depressive symptoms, especially in developing settings like the Philippines. Thus, we established the factor structure and assessed the reliability of the 11-item version of the Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression (CES-D) Scale for assessing depressive symptoms in older Filipino men and women. Using cross-sectional data from 5,209 community-dwelling Filipinos aged 60 and above from a nationally representative survey, Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) and methods in Item Response Theory (IRT) were applied to provide complementary insights into the properties of the scale and its individual items. CFA supported the multidimensionality of the scale. The scale is also sex-invariant, but the relationship between the subfactors and the higher-order factor may differ between men and women. In addition, findings from IRT analysis confirmed the overall utility of the CES-D scale, but positively stated items were found to be internally inconsistent with the rest of the scale. The scale is desirably informative for assessing more severe symptoms, although sex differences were found in the precision of individual items. In general, the 11-item CES-D Scale is an adequate multidimensional tool for assessing moderate to severe depressive symptoms in the older population, especially in older men.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Depressive symptoms frequently affect patients with neurocognitive disorders. In cross-sectional studies, patients with Lewy body dementia (DLB) showed higher levels of depressive symptoms than those with Alzheimer's disease (AD). We here describe the 5 year course of depressive symptoms in patients with DLB and AD. METHODS Secondary analysis of a dementia study in Western Norway (DemVest) longitudinal cohort study. SETTING This multicenter study was conducted in memory clinics in Western Norway. 187 patients newly diagnosed with AD (n = 111) and DLB (n = 76) were followed up annually for 5 years. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the Montgomery Åsberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS). MADRS subclusters dysphoria, retardation, vegetative, anhedonia were analyzed. The impact of proximity of death and the role of risk factors for depression and dementia on the course of depressive symptoms were evaluated. RESULTS We observed continuously increasing mean levels of depressive symptoms in DLB, while patients with AD showed a delayed increase at later follow-up visits. Increase in MADRS total score was mainly driven by increases in the anhedonia and retardation subclusters. Proximity to death was associated with an increase in depressive symptoms in DLB, while it tended to decrease in AD. Previous smoking and hearing loss were associated with higher MADRS scores during follow-up in the total sample. LIMITATIONS Yearly assessment of depressive symptoms might be too infrequent. CONCLUSION Depressive symptom load was consistently higher in DLB compared to AD during five years after diagnosis, but tended to become more similar at later stages.

Abstract
Previous studies suggested the role of cellular senescence in late-life depression (LLD). However, it is unclear how this finding relates to common features of LLD, such as medical and cognitive problems. We applied factor analyses to an extensive battery of clinical variables in 426 individuals with LLD. Here we tested the relationship between these factors, age and sex, with an index of cellular senescence based on 22 senescence-associated secretory phenotype proteins. We found four factors: 'depression and anxiety severity', 'cognitive functioning', 'cardiovascular and cardiometabolic health' and 'blood pressure'. A higher senescence-associated secretory phenotype index was associated with poorer 'cognitive functioning' and 'cardiovascular and cardiometabolic health' but not with 'depression and anxiety severity'. These findings highlight the role of cellular senescence in poorer physical and cognitive health in LLD. They are consonant with the viewpoint that co-occurring medical burdens and their associated disabilities are part of a phenotype of accelerated ageing in LLD.

Abstract
Late-life depression (LLD) is one of the most common mental disorders among the older adults. Population aging, social stress, and the COVID-19 pandemic have significantly affected the emotional health of older adults, resulting in a worldwide prevalence of LLD. The clinical phenotypes between LLD and adult depression differ in terms of symptoms, comorbid physical diseases, and coexisting cognitive impairments. Many pathological factors such as the imbalance of neurotransmitters, a decrease in neurotrophic factors, an increase in β-amyloid production, dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, and changes in the gut microbiota, are allegedly associated with the onset of LLD. However, the exact pathogenic mechanism underlying LLD remains unclear. Traditional selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor therapy results in poor responsiveness and side effects during LLD treatment. Neuromodulation therapies and complementary and integrative therapies have been proven safe and effective for the treatment of LLD. Importantly, during the COVID-19 pandemic, modern digital health intervention technologies, including socially assistive robots and app-based interventions, have proven to be advantageous in providing personal services to patients with LLD.

Abstract
Background There is limited research examining the impact of risk and protective factors on late-life depression using large population-based datasets, particularly those examining differences among older migrants and non-migrants in Europe countries. Thus, the first aim was to analyze differences between migrants and non-migrants regarding socioeconomic status, depression, multimorbidity, healthy aging, and lifestyle behaviors. The second aim was to examine the impact of healthy aging on late-life depression in older migrants compared to their counterparts without a history of international migration in extensive and harmonized data from different population-based cohort studies. Materials and methods We analyzed cross-sectional, predominantly nationally representative, community-based data from European participants in the Aging Trajectories of Health: Longitudinal Opportunities and Synergies (ATHLOS) cohort. The descriptive analyses included sociodemographic variables, somatic comorbidities, multimorbidity, healthy aging, and lifestyle behaviors according to migration status. The effects of these variables on late-life depression were examined in a multivariate logistic regression model, including migration status and years since migration as predictors. Results Data of 122,571 individuals aged ≥ 50 years were analyzed, of which 11,799 (9.60%) were migrants. The descriptive analyses indicated that compared to non-migrants, migrants showed a higher prevalence of diabetes (25.6%), hypertension (38.0%), coronary artery disease (49.4%), stroke (4.9%), and depression (31.1%). Healthy aging was also better in non-migrants (51.7; SD = 9.7) than in migrants (39.6; SD = 18.2). The results of the logistic regression showed that migration status [OR = 1.231 (CIs: 0.914-1.547)] and increased number of years since migration in the host country [OR = 0.003 (CIs: 0.001-0.005)] were associated with greater levels of depressive symptoms. Concerning health variables, multimorbidity was associated with higher levels of depressive symptoms [OR = 0.244 (CIs: 0.211-0.278)], whereas better healthy aging was associated with fewer depressive symptoms [OR = -0.100 (CIs: -0.102 to -0.098)]. The interaction between migration and healthy aging status was also significant [OR. = -0.019 (CIs: -0.025 to -0.014)]. Conclusion Migrants reported higher risks for worse health outcomes compared to non-migrants. Significantly, worse healthy aging was associated with a greater risk of depressive symptoms in migrants than in non-migrants. Shedding light on migration and aging processes is essential for promoting a cross-cultural understanding of late-life depression in Europe.

Abstract
Background Although there has been accumulating evidence on the elevated risk of depression in hypertensive patients, data regarding depressive disorders in older adults with hypertension and the interplay between factors associated with depression in this population are very limited. Disentangling the mutual influences between factors may help illuminate the pathways involved in the pathogenesis of the comorbidity of depression in hypertension. This study investigated the prevalence of depressive disorders in older Chinese adults with hypertension and examined major correlates of depressive disorders and the interactions between correlates by using classification tree analysis (CTA). Methods In total, 374 older adults with essential hypertension were enrolled from seven urban and six rural primary care centers in Wuhan, China, and interviewed with the Chinese Mini-international Neuropsychiatric Interview 5.0. Family relationship and feelings of loneliness were assessed with standardized questions. A checklist was used to assess the presence of six major medical conditions: diabetes mellitus, heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, chronic gastric ulcer, and arthritis. Results The 1-month prevalence rate of depressive disorders was 25.7%. The CTA model identified four major correlates of depressive disorders: loneliness was the most salient, followed by arthritis, family relationship, and heart disease. There were statistically significant interactions between loneliness and arthritis, loneliness and family relationship, and arthritis and heart disease. Conclusion Over one out of every four older Chinese adults with hypertension suffer from depressive disorders. Collaborative multidisciplinary management services are needed to reduce the burden of depression in hypertensive older adults, which may include social work outreach services to promote family relationship, mental health services to relive loneliness, and primary care services to manage arthritis and heart disease.

Background
Late-onset depression is different from early-onset depression in its sociodemographic and clinical characteristics and risk factors. This study aimed to demonstrate the differences in sociodemographic characteristics as well as clinical presentation between late-onset depression (after the age of 60 years) and early-onset depression (before the age of 45 years) and to determine the sociodemographic risk factors for late onset depression. Fifty-five patients between 18 and 45 years of age (group 1) and 55 patients aged 60 years and above (group 2) diagnosed for the first time with major depressive disorder were compared regarding sociodemographic and clinical characteristics. They were recruited from the psychiatric clinic at Sohag University Hospital. All participants were subjected to a Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV (SCID-IV), sociodemographic data form, Beck Depression Inventory-Second Edition (BDI-II), and Apathy Evaluation Scale (AES).
Results
The patients in group 2 were more commonly single (29%), employed (74.54%), living in rural areas (56.36%), and had high school education (41.81%). While the patients in group 2 were more commonly widows (18.18%), unemployed (61.81%), had less than high school education (47.27%), and had chronic diseases (78.81%). Significant risk factors for late onset depression are being widow, unemployed, having low socioeconomic status, and having a chronic medical disease. Patients with late-onset depression were more commonly presented with apathy, cognitive impairment, and somatic symptoms, as well as sleep disturbance (mean±SD 57±6, 70.9%, 61.81%, and 81.81%, respectively) than early-onset depression (mean±SD 49± 4, 47.27%, 36.36%, and 70.9%, respectively).
Conclusions
Cases with late onset depression are featured by being unemployed, widow, having low socioeconomic status and low educational level, suffering from a chronic medical condition and living in an urban area. In late onset depression, somatic symptoms, apathy, sleep disturbances, as well as cognitive impairment are prevalent presenting symptoms.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Regular engagement in behavioral activities plays a crucial role against depressive symptoms in older adults. This study aims to explore the relationship between behavioral activities and the temporal evolution of depressive symptoms. METHODS We included community-dwelling Japanese adults aged 64 or 65 years with and without depressive symptoms enrolled in the New Integrated Suburban Seniority Investigation (NISSIN) project. Depressive symptoms at baseline and follow-up were assessed using the 15-item Geriatric Depression Scale. Behavioral activities were measured by self-reported questions. Risk ratios and 95% confidence intervals were calculated using modified Poisson regression, adjusting for relevant sociodemographic variables and health-related confounders. RESULTS During the 6 year follow-up period, 139 (10.1%) without depressive symptoms at baseline developed such symptoms over time, while 174 (51.6%) with depressive symptoms improved to the point of these symptoms being absent. The participants without depressive symptoms at baseline and those who engaged in social activity or daily walking at a continued regular frequency (CRF) or an increased frequency (IF) and exercise habits at CRF were the least likely to have depressive symptoms onset at follow-up. There was no significant difference between the changes in behavioral activities and the improvement of depressive symptoms after controlling for confounders. Participants engaging in a greater variety of behavioral activities at CRF were less likely to experience a new onset of depressive symptoms. CONCLUSIONS Consistent and regular participation in one or more behavioral activities was significantly associated with the onset of depressive symptoms in Japanese community-dwelling older adults.

Abstract
Background Mental health of older adults could be positively predicted by harmonious parent–adult children relationships, although the mechanism has not been sufficiently demonstrated. This study employed sense of loneliness as mediator to examine the influence of multiple domains of intergenerational relationships on depressive symptoms in ageing Chinese adults. Methods Data was extracted from a representative survey in Hong Kong among Chinese adults aged over 50 with at least one adult child (n = 801). Four key domains (structural–associational, consensual–normative, affectual closeness, and intergenerational conflict) were adopted to measure the intergenerational relationship quality. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the five-item Geriatric Depression Scale. The mediating role of sense of loneliness in the association between intergenerational relationships and depressive symptoms were tested by the PROCESS macro in SPSS. Results The influence of overall intergenerational relationship quality and its four subdomains on depressive symptoms were significantly mediated by sense of loneliness. Among the four domains, affectual closeness presented the strongest association with older people’s depressive symptoms. The effect of intergenerational conflict on depressive symptoms was completely mediated by sense of loneliness, and the effects of remaining three domains were partially mediated. The domain of consensual–normative solidarity received the lowest rating by Chinese older adults. Conclusion The psychological pathway that loneliness links intergenerational relationships and depressive symptoms was supported in this study. With respect to improving intergenerational relationships, enhancing affectual connection between older parents and adult children was essential to prevent mental problems. This study calls for more attention to the protective role of diverse social relationships in improving mental health through multiple pathways.

Abstract
As a major life transition characterized by changes in social, behavioral, and psychological domains, retirement is associated with numerous risk factors that can contribute to the development of depression in later life. Understanding how these risk factors intersect with overall health and functioning can inform opportunities for mental health promotion during this transition. The objective of this review is to summarize the literature on risk and protective factors for depression during retirement transitions, discuss challenges related to appropriate management of depression in later life, and describe opportunities for prevention and intervention for depression relating to retirement transitions, both within and beyond the health care system. Key implications from this review are that 1) the relationship between depression and retirement is multifaceted; 2) while depression is a common health condition among older adults, this syndrome should not be considered a normative part of aging or of retirement specifically; 3) the existing mental health specialty workforce is insufficient to meet the depression management needs of the aging population, and 4) therefore, there is a need for interprofessional and multidisciplinary intervention efforts for preventing and managing depression among older adults. In sum, both healthcare providers, public health practitioners, and community organizations have meaningful opportunities for promoting the mental health of older adults during such major life transitions.

Abstract
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES To examine the serial mediating effect of executive function and attentional bias in the relationship between frailty and depressive symptoms. BACKGROUND Although the role of frailty in predicting depression has been well documented, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. DESIGN A cross-sectional study was conducted with 667 older inpatients aged 60-90 years in the internal medicine wards of a hospital in China. METHODS Attentional bias, frailty and depressive symptoms were assessed using the Attention to Positive and Negative Information Scale, the Physical Frailty Phenotype and the 5-item Geriatric Depression Scale. Executive function was measured using 3 tests, including digital backward, category Verbal Fluency Test and Trail Making Test. The study followed the STROBE guideline. RESULTS The latent profile analysis (LPA) identified four patterns of attentional bias, namely "no positive bias & no negative bias" (class 1, 9.3%), "minor positive bias & no negative bias" (class 2, 48.0%), "major positive bias & minor negative bias" (class 3, 25.6%) and "major positive bias & no negative bias" (class 4, 17.1%). Regression analysis found that frailty was associated with depressive symptoms. Frailty was also negatively associated with executive function, which was a protective factor for attentional bias class 1, 2 and 3 with reference to class 4. Attentional bias class 1 and 2 but not class 3 was associated with depressive symptoms with reference to class 4. The joint significance test confirmed executive function and attentional bias as serial mediators linking frailty to depressive symptoms. DISCUSSION Unlike robust older adults who have the age-related positivity effect, frail older adults have attentional bias deficits due to executive dysfunction, and consequently experience clinically relevant depressive symptoms. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE Healthcare providers should take executive function training and attentional bias regulation into consideration to reduce the detrimental effects of frailty on emotional well-being.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study's aim is to verify the longitudinal effect of depressive symptoms on all-cause mortality depending on the age group. METHODS The Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging's data from 2006 to 2016 were assessed using longitudinal data analysis, and 10,145 participants (age [mean±standard deviation], 61.7±11.1 years; males, 4,426 [43.6%]; females, 5,719 [56.4%]; middle-aged adults, 6,036 [59.5%]; older adults, 4,109 [40.5%]) were included at baseline. The chi-square test, log-rank test, factor analysis, and Cox proportional hazards models were used to investigate the association between depressive symptoms and mortality. To verify that which feelings and behaviors are associated with mortality, factor analysis was used to Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression (CES-D) scale and it was divided into two factors: negative and positive affects. RESULTS The hazard ratio (HR) of all-cause mortality for the Q1 (high) of the negative affect factor was higher than the Q3 (low) of this factor (HR, 1.489; 95% confidence interval, 1.284-1.728). Additionally, the association between negative affect and all-cause mortality was stronger in middle-aged adults than older adults. CONCLUSION The study provided evidence of the longitudinal effect of depressive symptoms on all-cause mortality regardless of age. However, middle-aged adults could be more sensitive to negative feelings and behaviors than older adults.

Abstract
Environmental factors like diet have been linked to depression and/or relapse risk in later life. This could be partially driven by the food metabolome, which communicates with the brain via the circulatory system and interacts with hippocampal neurogenesis (HN), a form of brain plasticity implicated in depression aetiology. Despite the associations between HN, diet and depression, human data further substantiating this hypothesis are largely missing. Here, we used an in vitro model of HN to test the effects of serum samples from a longitudinal ageing cohort of 373 participants, with or without depressive symptomology. 1% participant serum was applied to human fetal hippocampal progenitor cells, and changes in HN markers were related to the occurrence of depressive symptoms across a 12-year period. Key nutritional, metabolomic and lipidomic biomarkers (extracted from participant plasma and serum) were subsequently tested for their ability to modulate HN. In our assay, we found that reduced cell death and increased neuronal differentiation were associated with later life depressive symptomatology. Additionally, we found impairments in neuronal cell morphology in cells treated with serum from participants experiencing recurrent depressive symptoms across the 12-year period. Interestingly, we found that increased neuronal differentiation was modulated by increased serum levels of metabolite butyrylcarnitine and decreased glycerophospholipid, PC35:1(16:0/19:1), levels - both of which are closely linked to diet - all in the context of depressive symptomology. These findings potentially suggest that diet and altered HN could subsequently shape the trajectory of late-life depressive symptomology.

Abstract
Objectives Mental health is determined by social, biological, and cultural factors and is sensitive to life transitions. We examine how psychosocial working conditions, social living environment, and cumulative risk factors are associated with mental health changes during the retirement transition. Method We use data from the Finnish Retirement and Aging study on public sector employees (n = 3,338) retiring between 2014 and 2019 in Finland. Psychological distress was measured with the General Health Questionnaire annually before and after retirement and psychosocial working conditions, social living environment, and accumulation of risk factors at the study wave prior to retirement. Results Psychological distress decreased during the retirement transition, but the magnitude of the change was dependent on the contexts individuals retire from. Psychological distress was higher among those from poorer psychosocial working conditions (high job demands, low decision authority, job strain), poorer social living environment (low neighborhood social cohesion, small social network), and more cumulative risk factors (work/social/both). During the retirement transition, greatest reductions in psychological distress were observed among those with poorer conditions (work: absolute and relative changes, p [Group × Time interactions] < .05; social living environment and cumulative risk factors: absolute changes, p [Group × Time interactions] < .05). Discussion Psychosocial work-related stressors lead to quick recovery during the retirement transition but the social and cumulative stressors have longer-term prevailing effects on psychological distress. More studies are urged incorporating exposures across multiple levels or contexts to clarify the determinants of mental health during the retirement transition and more generally at older ages.

Abstract
The current study explored the influence of health status, cognitive function, and social capital on depressive symptoms in Korean older adults. Data from the National Survey of Older Koreans, conducted by the Korean Institute for Health and Social Affairs in 2017, were used. Social capital was measured by dividing it into structural and cognitive social capital. Final analysis included 6,100 individuals aged ≥65 years (mean age = 72.6, SD = 5.8 years; 3,466 males [56.8%], 2,634 females [43.2%]). Multiple hierarchical regression analysis indicated that age, income, economic activity status, religion, household type, self-rated health, apoplexy (e.g., stroke, cerebral infarction), cognitive function, structural social capital, and cognitive social capital were significant predictors of depressive symptoms in older adults. This study suggests that researchers and clinicians should consider the factors associated with self-rated health, cognitive social capital, and economic status (income and economic activity) to prevent or alleviate depressive symptoms in older adults.
